prevails upon all subjects2 and most particularly upon religious subjects4 ,intelligent and thinking men of every class1 are beginning to investigate and discuss questions of the latter kind with considerable closeness1 fearlessness and determination4 ,they are now resolved no longer to be hoodwinked with the veil of prejudice1 enchained with the trammels of superstition1 or deluded by the ,hosted by or intimidated by the denunciations of a crafty and intolerant priesthood2 but to examine for themselves--to prove all things1 and hold fast that which is good4 ,and long have the priesthood dreaded1 and anxiously have they endeavored to procrastinate1 the arrival of this period4 ,long have they been apprehensive of the development of intellect1 and the enlightenment of mind4 ,long have they feared the advent of that era which will hail the dawn of rationality and advancement4 ,and why8 ,because they knew full well1 ignorant and superstitious as many of them may appear1 that when intellect and rationality become the main-springs of society--when men begin dispassionately and philosophically to examine into the mysteries and workings of religion1 that all their impositions will be discovered1 all their craftiness detected1 and all their designs and practices fully exposed4 ,and1 when once this is done1 they are conscious that their influence over the people1 would immediately decline1 and ultimately fall4 ,this has already in some measure proved true4 ,for by the many bold and daring innovations1 which have been made by a ,paine1 a ,voltaire1 a ,mirabaud1 a ,volney1 a ,taylor1 a ,howitt1 and an ,owen1 upon what is arrogantly called the consecrated ground of religion1 their influence has materially declined1 and has every prospect of still continuing to do so4 ,and this they know--this they feel4 ,hence1 the terrific thunderbolts of indignation and anathema which they have hurled at the characters of those distinguished men4 ,and hence1 that malicious and vindictive spirit which they have manifested toward all those who have had the integrity or boldness to acknowledge themselves their disciples4 ,hence1 too1 their present discreditable opposition to every educational1 political and social measure1 which would conduce to the elevation and improvement of society4 ,but poor deluded mortals6 how vain will they find all their attempts to impede the mighty progress of truth--the glorious advancement of thought and enlightenment6 ,as well1 indeed1 might they attempt to overthrow the pyramids of ,egypt with the waft of a feather1 as to endeavor to demolish the temple of reason and intellect which is now erecting in society2 a temple which1 while it will be a glorious emblem of the progression of man1 will be a lasting monument of their final downfall6 ,so considerably1 in fact1 is the power of the priesthood already diminished1 that they are now beginning to be looked upon by the leading minds of all classes1 with feelings of indifference and compassion1 rather than those of reverence and admiration4 ,it was the desire to endeavor to hasten the annihilation of the influence of these men that induced me to publish the following work---a work which1 ,i trust1 will serve somewhat to expose one of the greatest impositions ever palmed upon mankind in any age1 or in any country4 ,i allude1 as may be supposed8 to the ,bible4 ,yes1 the ,christian priesthood dare so outrageously to blaspheme the character of the ,supreme ,governor of the ,universe as to say1 that book is his word2 that he either wrote or inspired men to write it4 ,o shame1 shame upon such blasphemy6 ,what6 a munificent and omniscient ,deity the author of a book replete with more contradictions1 containing more immoralities1 and inculcating more absurdities1 than any book extant2 contradictions1 too1 of the grossest character1 immoralities of the most pernicious tendency1 and absurdities of the most extravagant nature6 ,audacious impiety6 ,such an opinion perhaps might be entertained in the dark ages of ignorance and superstition1 but in this the boasted era of reason and science1 it must be repudiated by all who dare openly and frankly avow their sentiments1 ,this may be deemed by those who have always read the ,bible with their eyes closed1 or who are interested in teaching its doctrines and mysteries1 as very bold and presumptuous2 but let the reader refer to the extracts contained in this little book1 7and which are only a few to what may be adduced7 and ,i am persuaded that he will at once acknowledge that ,i am perfectly justified in making these statements1 ,indeed1 so extremely immoral and disgustingly obscene1 are many passages in this book1 that ,i feel almost ashamed to publish them1 and ,i am sure that any one who has the least sense of delicacy or chastity1 will blush to read them4 ,a book which had really originated from an ,omniscient and ,munificent ,divinity---a book which was the word1 or organ of such a being1 must inculcate in every chapter and in every verse1 the strictest1 the purest1 and most exalted morality2 must constantly exhort mankind to every thing that was just1 rational and charitable2 and must contain no language but that which was exquisitely beautiful and elevating2 and no expressions but those which were irresistibly persuasive and convincing4 ,but the ,bible is a book1 as may be seen on a reference to these extracts1 quite the reverse of this4 ,we are compelled1 therefore1 to conclude against the established opinions of society1 that it cannot be of ,divine origin1 and that consequently it cannot be the word of ,god4 ,my humble1 but decided opinion is1 as ,i have previously observed1 that it was nothing more than a mere imposition2 an imposition which was palmed upon mankind by the ,christian priesthood1 for the purpose of deluding or enslaving them2 for the purpose of leading them from the open and cheering paths of knowledge and improvement1 into the nauseous and gloomy quagmires of ignorance and superstition4 ,the priesthood of every sect of religion1 in every country of the habitable globe1 have instituted and perpetuated certain impositions1 by means of which they have conceived they would be enabled to maintain and increase their influence over the minds of their followers2 so that thereby they might still continue to luxuriate in ease and enjoyment1 while their poor deluded victims repined in ignorance and woe4 ,and this is such an imposition now established and supported by the ,christian priesthood--an imposition which is the corner stone of all their power1 the fountain of all their influence4 ,it has been the tool which they have invariably used in the accomplishment of their objects1 however selfish2 and in the consummation of their machinations1 however odious4 ,whenever they have massacred1 immolated1 or incarcerated those who have dared to dispute their vicegerency1 or who have presumed to expose their doctrines1 or denounce their practices1 they have quoted this imposition as their authority4 ,whenever they have defended1 or connived at the extortions of the tyrants who have flattered or supported them1 they have quoted this imposition as their authority4 ,whenever they have opposed any system or any measure1 which they considered would be inimical to their interests1 or subversive of their power1 they have quoted this imposition as their authority4 ,and the sooner this imposition is removed--the sooner the few good seeds which it may contain are extracted from it1 and the immense mass of chaff is cast into oblivion1 the better will it be for the amelioration and progression of man4 ,perhaps the expression of such opinions as these may be painful to the feelings of many excellent individuals4 ,for this ,i am truly sorry1 as my object is1 not to cause pain or uneasiness1 but to expose error and imposture4 ,the time has now arrived when truth must come out1 when truth must be spoken1 without mystery1 mixture of error1 or fear of man4 ,too long1 indeed1 has this precious jewel been sacrificed to the paltry predilections of interest and prejudice4 ,too long have we been tossed in the dark and unfathomable gulf of bigotry and intolerance2 we must now make our way to the expansive and unruffled ocean of reason and inquiry1 and there1 free from the storms of persecution1 and the squalls of denunciation1 proceed1 on our onward course1 in security and felicity4 ,r4 ,c4 ,,table ,,of ,,contents4 ,passages inconsistent4444 cometh ,mary ,magdalene1 early1 when it was yet dark1 unto the sepulchre1 and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre4 ,john xx4 #a4 #dcd4 ,now upon the first day of the week1 very early in the morning1 they came unto the sepulchre1 bringing the spices which they had prepared1 and certain others with them4 ,luke xxiv4 #a4 ,the individuals spoken of in this note as coming to the sepulchre1 we learn in the #ajth v4 are ,mary ,magdalene1 and ,joanna1 and ,mary the mother of ,james1 and other women4 ,now we are told in note #dcj1 7,mark xvi4 #a7 that it was ,mary ,magdalene1 ,mary the mother of ,james1 and ,salome1 that came2 in note #dbi 7,matt1 xxviii4 #a7 that it was only ,mary ,magdalene1 and the other ,mary2 and in note #dc i 7,john xx4 #a7 that it was only ,mary ,magdalene4 #dce4 among themselves1 who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre8 7,and when they looked they saw that the stone was rolled away27 for it was very great4 ,and entering into the sepulchre1 they saw a young man 7the angel of the ,lord7 sitting on the right side1 clothed in a long white garment2 and they were affrighted4 ,mark xvi4 #c1 #d1 #e4 ,thus1 in one of these notes the angel is represented as sitting outside the sepulchre upon the stone which he rolled from the door1 and in the other1 as sitting within the sepulchre on the right side4 #dcg4 ,and they entered in1 and found not the body of the ,lord ,jesus4 ,and it came to pass1 as they were much perplexed thereabout1 behold1 two men 7angels of the ,lord7 stood by them in shining garments4 ,luke xxiv4 #c and #d4 ,in notes #dce1 #dcf1 and #dch1 the angels of the ,lord are represented1 not as standing1 as above1 but as sitting4 #dch4 ,but ,mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping2 and as she wept she stooped down1 and looked into the sepulchre4 ,and seeth two angels in white1 sitting1 the one at the head1 and the other at the feet1 where the body of ,jesus had lain4 ,john xx1 #aa1 #ab4 ,in this1 and note #dcg1 there are represented as being two angels1 while according to notes #dce and #dcd1 there was only one4 ,in this note also1 as well as in note #dcd1 we are told that they had white garments on1 and in note #dce1 we are told they were shining garments4 ,we are likewise told in this note1 that ,mary merely looked into the sepulchre2 while in note #dcf1 we are positively informed1 that she and those who accompanied her1 went into it4 #dci4 ,and the angel answered and said unto the women1 fear not ye2 for ,i know that ye seek ,jesus1 which was crucified4 ,he is not here2 for he is risen1 as he said2 come1 see the place where the ,lord lay1 ,matt1 xxviii4 #e1 #f4 #ddj4 ,and when she had thus said1 she turned herself back1 and saw ,jesus standing1 and knew not that it was ,jesus4 ,jesus ,father3 but go to my brethren1 and say unto them4 ,i ascend unto my ,father1 and your ,father1 and to my ,god1 and your ,god4 ,john xx4 #ad to4#ag4 ,in the former of these notes1 the angel is represented as telling the women of ,christ's rising from the dead2 in the latter1 ,christ is represented as telling them himself4 #dda4 ,and go quickly1 and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead2 and behold1 he goeth before you into ,galilee2 there shall ye see him4 ,lo1 ,i have told you4 ,then the eleven disciples went away into ,galilee1 into a mountain where ,jesus had appointed them4 ,and when they saw him they worshipped him2 but some doubted4 ,matt1 xxviii4 #g1 #af1 #ag4 #ddb4 ,and they rose up the same hour1 and returned to ,jerusalem1 and found the eleven gathered bread4 ,and as they thus spake1 ,jesus himself stood in the midst of them1 and saith unto them1 ,peace be unto you4 ,luke xxiv4 #cc to #cf4 ,now we are told in the first of these notes1 that the eleven disciples went to ,galilee to meet ,jesus according to appointment1 where they saw him1 and worshipped him2 while in the latter we are informed that they did no such thing1 but that ,jesus appeared unto them quite unexpectedly1 as they were assembled together at ,jerusalem4 #ddc4 ,so then1 after the ,lord had spoken unto them4 7the eleven apostles that sat at meat17 he was received up into heaven1 and sat on the right hand of ,god4 ,mark xvi4 #ai4 #djd4 ,and he led them 7the eleven ,apostles7 out as far as to ,bethany2 and he lift up his hands1 and blessed them4 ,and it came to pass1 while he blessed them1 he was parted from them1 and carried up into heaven4 ,luke xxiv4#ej1 #ea4 ,so we learn from one of these notes1 that ,christ ascended into heaven1 from the place where the apostles were sat at meat1 after he had done speaking to them2 and from the other1 that he first led them out to ,bethany1 and that then his ascension took place4 ,,the ,,end4
