,,by ,,the ,,author ,,of ,,peep ,,of ,,day4 ,,london3 ,,john ,,hatchard ,,and ,,son4 #ahdh4 ,illustration ,,the ,,blind ,,beggar ,,of ,,jericho4 ,it is very common to see blind men begging in the streets4 ,do not you pity the blind8 ,how sad it must be never to see the light of the sun1 nor the green leaves in spring1 nor the faces of our dearest friends6 ,a long while ago a blind man sat begging by the side of the road4 ,as he sat he heard the noise of a great crowd walking along4 ,he did not know why there was such a crowd1 so he asked the people passing by why so many had come together4 ,they told him that ,jesus of ,nazareth was passing that way4 ,the blind man had heard before of ,jesus4 ,he had heard that he could do great wonders1 and he felt sure in his heart that ,jesus could make him see4 ,but the blind man could not go to him--how could he dare to stir in such a crowd8 ,he might have been pushed down and trodden upon and crushed to death4 ,but he could speak4 ,he cried out very loud1 ,have mercy on me1 ,o ,lord4 ,he did not cry out once or twice1 he kept on crying out1 hoping that ,jesus would hear him4 ,but the ,lord took no notice of him1 and a great many people came up to him and told him not to make such a noise4 ,yet the poor man would not be quiet2 he knew that the ,lord was passing by1 and that he might soon be gone1 and that he might never pass that way again1 so he cried out more than ever1 ,lord1 have mercy on me6 ,and did the ,lord take notice of him at last8 ,yes1 he did2 he stood still1 and told the people to bring that blind man to him4 ,how kind it was in ,jesus to care for the blind beggar6 ,jesus is very kind1 and cares for every poor creature in the world4 ,at last the blind man heard some one speak kindly to him1 and say1 ,be of good comfort2 rise1 he calleth thee4 ,how glad he was to hear that ,jesus had sent for him6 ,he got up very quickly1 and went to ,jesus1 for now the people made room for him4 ,no one now was rude to the poor beggar1 for ,jesus had called for him4 ,and what did ,jesus say to him8 ,he asked him this question1 ,what do you wish me to do for you8 ,the man replied1 ,lord1 that ,i may receive my sight4 ,jesus pitied him very much1 and he touched his eyes1 and said1 ,receive thy sight4 ,that moment he was able to see4 ,how glad he now was that he had cried out1 ,lord1 have mercy on me1 and that he had not left off when the people told him not to make a noise6 ,he would not leave ,jesus now he had found him1 but went after him on the road1 praising him1 and thanking ,god for his goodness4 ,if all people would pray as this blind man did1 ,jesus would hear them all4 ,the child who reads this book is not blind4 ,if you were blind how could you read to father or to mother8 ,but there is something which ,jesus could do for you1 that would make you happy for ever4 ,what is it8 ,do you know8 ,if he were to say1 ,what do you wish me to do for you8 what would you answer8 ,i should like you to say1 ,forgive me my sins1 and give me thy ,holy ,spirit4 ,my dear child1 do make this little prayer every day4 ,jesus would hear you4 ,perhaps you live in a very poor place4 ,perhaps you live in a little room in town1 up some dark and narrow stairs2 perhaps there is very little furniture in it1 and very little food in the cupboard1 but ,jesus knows where you live1 and he knows your name1 and your father's name1 and your mother's name1 and he hears all you say4 ,he would be much pleased to hear you praying to him1 because he loves you1 and he once died upon the cross that you might not go to hell4 ,if you go to heaven you will see the blind beggar there--,i mean the beggar who once was blind4 ,then you will sing with him about the love of ,jesus in saving your souls4 ,if you wish to read a full account of this blind man1 you will find it in ,mark x4 #df to end1 and also in ,luke xviii4 #ce to end4 ,when ,jesus ,christ was here below1 ,and spread his works of love abroad1 ,if ,i had lived so long ago1 ,i think ,i should have loved the ,lord4 ,jesus1 who was so very kind1 ,who came to pardon sinful men1 ,who heal'd the sick1 and cur'd the blind3 ,oh1 must not ,i have loved him then8 ,but where is ,jesus8 ,is he dead8 ,oh1 no2 he lives in heaven above3 ,and blest are they1 the ,saviour said1 ,who1 though they have not seen me1 love4 ,he sees us from his throne on high ,as well as when on earth he dwelt2 ,and when to him poor children cry1 ,he feels such love as then he felt4 ,and if the ,lord will grant me grace1 ,much ,i will love him and adore2 ,but when in heaven ,i see his face1 ',twill be my joy to love him more4 ,jane ,taylor4 ,,the ,,end4 ,macintosh1 ,printer1 ,great ,new-street1 ,london4 ,,prayer4 ,o ,father in ,heaven1 ,thou
