,,dear ,,children2 ,when our blessed ,saviour was upon earth1 little children were brought to him1 and he kindly took them in his arms1 laid his hands upon them1 and blessed them4 ,you have read this pleasing account in the ,new ,testament1 and you have been taught that this kind ,saviour came down from heaven1 and was called ,jesus1 because he should save his people from their sins2 you have learned that ,god ,almighty will punish all wicked people after death1 by sending them into a dreadful place4 ,now1 consider1 children1 that you are all sinners1 and though you are young1 be sure1 that unless you repent1 and put your trust in ,jesus ,christ1 ,god will cast you off for ever1 and then you must be miserable4 ,but ,jesus ,christ loves little children who come to him2 he was nailed to the cross1 and died to save them2 and he will bless them1 while they live2 and when they die1 he will take their souls up to heaven to himself1 where they will be happy with the blessed angels for ever4 ,now1 if you love him1 my dear children1 you will try and do what he says1 and that is what we mean by your duty4 ,out of love1 therefore1 to you1 we give you this little book1 which sets before you some of the good instructions which are so kindly given you by your friends in the ,sunday ,school3 you must take care to keep in mind these things1 if you would behave like children who love their ,saviour1 and hope to go to heaven4 ,read1 therefore1 this affectionate admonition1 consider it well1 and pray to ,god for grace1 that you may profit by it4 ,illustration #a4 ,be early and constant in your attendance at ,school4 ,many naughty children come perhaps on one ,sunday1 and then are absent for two or three following ones2 this shows that they have no desire to learn2 if they loved our ,saviour1 they would not do so4 ,let not trifles keep you away2 do not mind a little cold or a little rain1 but hasten to school1 and if you are there before your teachers1 they will be pleased with you1 and welcome you with a smile2 they will also be encouraged to take pains with such good children1 and you will go on regularly1 and will not forget your former lessons1 and be obliged to learn them over again1 as foolish and idle children must often do4 ,such early attendance will prevent your class being thrown into confusion2 and your teachers will be delighted to find that you are always ready for them as soon as they are ready for you4 #b4 ,be very attentive to instruction4 ,if instead of minding what is said to you1 you gaze about the school1 and look at the other children1 you will still remain ignorant4 ,when your teachers are explaining what you have been reading1 listen1 and try to understand them4 ,when you are learning your lesson1 keep your eyes fixed upon your book1 and take as much pains as you can1 that you may repeat it quite perfectly4 #c4 ,be silent in your ,class4 ,do not whisper and talk with those who sit next you2 you have much to learn1 and little time for the purpose2 make it not less by your own carelessness4 #d4 ,be thankful to your ,teachers4 ,they seek your welfare2 you hear them pray for you1 and they often do so when you are not with them4 ,their hearts' desire and prayer to ,god for you1 is1 that you may be saved2 they would bring you to ,jesus ,christ1 that you may be delivered from the wrath of ,god and endless misery1 through his precious blood shed for you2 that you may be saved from your sins1 by repentance and faith in him2 that you may be taught to pray to ,god through him2 and that1 by his grace1 you may learn and obey his holy commandments1 forsake all sin1 do his will all the days of your life1 and when you die1 may inherit the kingdom of heaven4 ,whenever1 therefore1 they admonish1 take heed to their words1 fix your eyes upon them1 and your thoughts on what they say2 it is for your good that they take pains with you2 they are seeking your salvation1 and your endless happiness4 ,how unkind will it be if you do not love them6 ,how insensible must you be1 if you do not profit by their instruction6 ,how dreadful will your case be1 if1 in the day of judgment1 they should be obliged to bear witness against you1 that they taught you1 and laboured to bring you to salvation1 but you would not6 ,on the contrary1 how joyful will it be for both1 if you are placed together at the right hand of our blessed ,saviour1 and hear him say1 ,come1 ye blessed children of my ,father1 receive the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world4 #e4 ,honour and obey your parents4 ,remember1 this is ,god's commandment4 ,consider this when you repeat the fifth commandment2 grieve them not by impertinence and obstinacy2 dare not to answer them with passion or disrespect2 never speak evil of them1 nor let others do so in your hearing2 be always gentle1 humble1 and dutiful1 in your manner2 never frown1 or be perverse1 or idle1 when they require you to work1 but show that you are willing and industrious2 be a comfort to them1 attend on them in sickness1 read your books to them1 and tell them what your teachers say to you2 and strive1 as much as in you lies1 to be the staff of their old age1 like good ,joseph in the ,scripture4 ,so ,god and they will bless you2 and you will be like our blessed ,saviour1 who was subject to his parents in his childhood1 and cared and provided for his aged mother even while he hung upon the cross4 ,illustration #f4 ,love your ,brothers and ,sisters4 ,be kind in your behaviour to each other1 and show your love by actions as well as words4 ,do all in your power to make them happy2 let brothers especially behave with gentleness to their sisters2 they are by nature more weak and defenceless1 and therefore brothers should treat them with peculiar tenderness4 ,if your brothers or sisters displease you1 do not speak angrily to them1 but be patient1 and forgive them1 as you hope our blessed ,saviour will forgive you4 ,if they rail at you1 rail not again2 but pray for them2 let them see that you love them still1 and they will be ashamed of themselves1 or1 even if they are not1 our ,saviour will be pleased with you2 for when he was reviled1 he reviled not again4 ,it is a sad thing when brothers and sisters quarrel1 and dreadful when they strike each other2 but a good and pleasant thing when brethren dwell together in unity and love4 ,birds in their little nests agree1 ,and 'tis a shameful sight1 ,when children of one family ,fall out1 and chide1 and fight4 #g4 ,reverence the ,lord's day4 ,it is appointed for the worship of ,god2 and all its hours should be employed in his service4 ,on this holy day you must give up your amusements1 and have as little as possible to do with worldly things2 on this day you are taught to read the word of ,god1 and you go with your school-fellows to worship him in his house2 there you are to join with the congregation in prayer and praise1 and to hear the minister of ,god preach the gospel1 which is to make men wise unto salvation through faith which is in ,christ ,jesus4 ,let your behaviour be very serious when you are thus engaged2 listen to every word which the minister speaks2 he is the messenger of ,god ,almighty1 and speaks as if ,christ ,jesus besought you1 by him1 to be reconciled to ,god4 ,pray to ,god that his word may prove a blessing to you1 and try to understand all you hear2 good children will not only endeavour to recollect the text and part of the sermon1 but will also repeat them to their parents and teachers4 ,those who are idle1 careless1 or sleepy1 in the house of ,god1 act as if there was no fear of ,god before their eyes4 #h4 ,read daily in the ,bible4 ,it is the word of ,god himself2 it points out the way of salvation by our ,saviour ,jesus ,christ2 if you love him1 you will delight in reading about him in the ,bible4 ,god's word is given for a light unto your feet1 and a lamp unto your path3 you know the use of a lamp in a dark night2 such is the ,bible1 a light to guide us in this dark world4 ,ignorance and wickedness are the darkness of the world3 ,jesus is the light1 and the ,bible is to instruct you in the knowledge and love of him4 ,obey its commands1 avoid what it forbids1 follow its directions2 and when you read it1 pray to ,god to give you understanding1 and a heart to receive its truths1 that by his grace and blessing you may profit by them4 #i4 ,pray to ,god constantly4 ,what a mercy it is that-- ,god will lend a gracious ear1 ,to what a child can say6 ,illustration ,god is your heavenly ,father1 who loves you2 and though you cannot see him1 he can both see and hear you2 and he will hear you at all times4 ,confess all your sins to him1 and think upon the love of our blessed ,saviour1 who died for your sins1 and pray to ,god to prosper you1 for his name sake4 ,my dear children1 he is very merciful2 and if you are sorry for your sins1 and afraid you shall be cast into the wicked place for them1 you must tell him your fears1 and he will be gracious to you1 and teach you so to believe on our ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 that your sins will certainly be all forgiven2 and then1 oh1 how must you love him6 ,when you are tempted to be naughty1 and disobedient1 or ill-tempered1 or idle1 pray to him to give you a new heart and a right spirit2 and do not give over praying for it till you find a better mind in yourselves2 for he will give you the ,holy ,spirit1 if you ask for it4 ,praise him also for all his mercies to you1 especially for raising up such good friends to teach you the way of salvation4 #aj4 ,take a cheerful part in the praises of ,god4 ,you learn hymns1 in order to sing those praises4 ,what beautiful hymns they are6 ,i hope you will not merely please yourselves with the tunes1 but study the meaning of the words1 that your hearts may make melody to the ,lord4 ,how sweetly ,moses1 and the children of ,israel1 sang upon the banks of the ,red ,sea1 when ,god had delivered them from the wicked ,egyptians6 ,exodus1 xv4 ,how sweetly ,david sang to his harp and other instruments of music1 as you read in the ,book of ,psalms6 ,our blessed ,saviour sang a hymn with his disciples before he suffered2 ,matt4 xxvi4 #cj4 and ,paul and ,silas sang the praises of ,god when they were in prison1 at dark midnight1 and their feet were made fast in the stocks4 ,acts1 xvi4 #be4 ,oh1 may you1 dear children1 sing his praises in the same blessed spirit1 and it will be as sweet incense before his throne4 ,illustration #aa4 ,abhor ,swearing4 ,what6 a ,sunday ,school child swear6 ,awful thought6 ,and yet there are some who do6 ,such wicked children are taking the broad road which leads to hell4 ,and what will be your feelings1 if you are cast into that dreadful place1 after all the pains which have been taken to lead you to heaven6 ,your case will be far more dreadful than that of others1 who are left to perish in ignorance and sin4 ,never take the sacred name of ,god in vain6 ,never use it but with fear and reverence1 and when it is necessary to use it4 ,when careless children call upon the name of ,god in their common conversation1 as many do1 exclaiming1 ,oh1 ,lord6 ,oh1 ,god6 ,lord1 have mercy6 and the like1 it proves that they are very wicked1 or at least very thoughtless4 ,reverence his name1 and tremble at the thought of mentioning it lightly4 #ab4 ,avoid bad company4 ,remember the ,bible says1 ,a companion of fools shall be destroyed4 ,therefore1 come out from among them1 and be separate1 and ,i will be a father unto you1 and ye shall be my sons and daughters1 saith the ,lord ,almighty4 ,shun all places of public amusement1 particularly taverns and play-houses4 ,many people call them harmless1 and their diversions innocent2 but do not believe them2 all sorts of wickedness and folly are practised there--gluttony1 drunkenness1 indecency1 swearing1 and sins of almost every kind2 if you go to them1 you will soon become as bad as the rest of those who frequent them2 do not mind the scorn of those who may despise you1 because you will not run to the same excess of riot as they4 ,if they are your relations1 or your acquaintance1 endeavour to persuade them to go to the house of ,god on the ,lord's day1 and on every other day to keep out of the path of temptation4 ,if they will not be persuaded to do so1 at least go not with them into any sinful course4 ,they may endeavour to persuade you1 but withstand their entreaties2 call to mind the words of ,solomon1 ,my son1 if sinners entice thee1 consent thou not6 ,they may entice1 but they cannot compel you2 and as evil communications corrupt good manners1 so1 if you join their company1 you will be in danger of following these wicked examples4 ,if1 my dear children1 you hope to meet our ,saviour at the last1 and to spend eternity in heaven with holy angels1 and the spirits of just men made perfect1 how can you bear to be in company with those wicked people upon earth1 who are1 every day1 making themselves more fit for the company of the devil and his angels in the outer darkness1 where there shall be weeping1 and wailing1 and gnashing of teeth8 ,and now ,i commend you unto ,god1 and to the word of his grace1 which is able to give you an inheritance among them that are sanctified4 ,we love you1 we care for you1 we pray for you6 ,oh1 may ,god turn your hearts by the ,holy ,spirit to himself1 that you may be his dear children2 and may he bless this little book to you1 and give you grace to read1 to mark1 to understand1 and to practise its directions2 may you walk in the path of duty while you live on earth1 and at last join the assembly of his people before his throne in heaven1 share in their happiness1 and unite in their praises1 to all eternity4 ,illustration ,,children',s ,,books ,,published ,,by ,,the ,,new-,,york ,religious ,tract ,society4 #b;d ,,series4 #a4 ,address to a ,child4 #b4 ,goodness of ,providence4 #c4 ,the ,vine4 #d4
