and for the honor of ,thy name1 and for ,thy infinite mercy's sake4 ,amen4 ,a brief ,instruction concerning ,confession and ,absolution4 ,my dear ,christian1 when you come to confession1 you must not be satisfied in repeating with the mouth a prayer which you have committed to memory1 or to permit a prayer of confession to be repeated to you by your confessor1 but you must yourself bring with you a penitent heart1 out of which your confession will then freely flow1 for to confess without a penitent heart is mocking ,god1 and without it no forgiveness of sins can take place4 ,to a penitent heart in the first place belongs1 that you confess your sins and experience sorrow and penitence on account of them4 ,by nature no man can know his sins1 nor can he produce penitence in his heart concerning them2 this must above all be sought of ,god4 ,we men are by nature much too blind1 too indifferent1 too inconsiderate1 too selfrighteous1 too much possessed with self-love and self-interest1 than to be inclined and capable penitently and uprightly to confess ourselves guilty of all sins4 ,wherefore above all things bend your knees before ,god and call upon him1 that ,he might open your eyes that you may thoroughly know the multitude and greatness of your sins4 ,pray with the blessed ,david3 ,search me1 ,o ,god1 and know my heart2 try me1 and know my thoughts2 and see if there be any wicked way in me1 and lead me in the way everlasting4 ,hereupon take the holy ten commandments and make a careful examination of your whole life in accordance with them4 ,then you will know that you are a sinner4 ,for as a man cannot see a spot on his face without a glass1 neither can he know his sins without beholding himself in the glass of the holy ten commandments4 ,for sin is every work1 every word1 yea1 every thought1 which is against ,god's commandments2 for sin consists in the performance of that which ,god has forbidden1 or in the omission of that which ,he has commanded to be done4 ,but you must not only regard the gross external sins1 but also the internal secret sins1 departures from ,god's commandments1 which have taken place in the heart through evil thoughts and desires4 ,if you will examine yourself thus in constant prayer1 you will discover that you have not feared1 loved and trusted ,god as ,he requires1 that you have not so heartily and confidently called upon ,god1 prayed1 praised and given thanks1 that you have not kept ,his ,word so holy1 heard and learned it1 as you should have done4 ,you will find that you have not honored and loved your parents and superiors1 but have been disobedient and murmured against them2 you will find that you have sinned against your neighbor in anger1 hatred1 revenge and irreconcilableness1 with unchaste thoughts and desires1 envy1 illwill1 avarice1 an earthly mind or with slanderous words1 in short1 you will find that you have not so uprightly and heartily loved your neighbor as yourself1 that much more selfishness1 the seeking of your own interests or your own honor has been the motive to all your actions4 ,with these and other sins you have surely deserved the wrath of ,god1 temporal and eternal punishment1 if ,god would deal with you according to ,his stern righteousness4 ,from these sins which you perceive in yourself you can draw the conclusion how impure and depraved your heart is1 from which these sins flow1 for as the water1 so the spring1 and by the fruits we know the tree4 ,hence you will come to the knowledge of original sin4 ,if you now will perceive these and other sins in thyself1 yea1 if you consider1 that the sins you have committed in ignorance1 are many more than those you know and feel in your heart1 which nevertheless the all knowing ,god places in the light of ,his countenance1 then you will tremble in your conscience and experience sorrow and penitence on account of them1 that you have so grievously offended your ,god and have been so unthankful for ,his blessings4 ,the second part of confession is faith1 and indeed faith in ,jesus ,christ1 who hath made satisfaction for all thy sins and has also obtained forgiveness of the same4 ,faith is as a hand which appropriates the forgiveness of sins and receives it as an unmerited gift of divine grace4 ,without this faith all knowledge and sorrow for sin is only the confession of a ,cain or a ,judas1 which ends in despair4 ,but by faith in ,jesus ,christ1 the ,saviour of all sinners1 the heart is comforted and made quiet4 ,but this faith you cannot produce in your own heart1 but it is the work and gift of ,god the ,holy ,spirit4 ,and if you experience that you are wanting in this faith1 and that you cannot believe but desire to believe1 then call upon ,god for this faith1 and he will give it thee4 ,thereupon the fruits of penitence must follow4 ,these consist in this1 that you no more knowingly and intentionally will commit the sins which have been forgiven you1 but you much more will hate and forsake them1 and by the assistance of the ,holy ,spirit contend against them4 ,if now you bring such a penitent heart with you to confession1 then you are able to receive the absolution which your confessor gives you1 by virtue of which your sins are really and certainly forgiven thee by ,god in heaven4 ,forgiveness of sins ,christ has obtained for all sinners by his death and the shedding of ,his blood and sealed it by ,his resurrection and commanded it to be preached and delivered to all the world through the ,gospel4 ,now when the confessor absolves thee1 he does nothing else than declare unto you the ,gospel of the forgiveness of sins2 and yet this is not merely an empty declaration1 but such a one through which forgiveness of sins is really presented and offered to penitent sinners4 ,as often as you hear the words of absolution from his mouth1 do not doubt1 but firmly believe that your sins are forgiven thee before ,god in heaven1 as certainly as if ,christ would immediately speak from heaven3 ,be of good cheer1 my son 7my daughter71 thy sins be forgiven thee1 for ,he says3 ,whosoever heareth you1 heareth me1 and whosesoever sins ye remit1 they are remitted unto them4 #cd4 ,complaint of a poor ,sinner concerning the ,impenitence of his ,heart4 ,i1 miserable afflicted sinner1 come unto ,thee1 my heavenly ,father1 and bring nothing with me but good in me1 ,i am conceived and born in sins1 my nature is so perverted and depraved1 that ,i cannot feel and experience in me either a desire or love for virtue and the heavenly gifts1 but only for a thousand times more1 yea1 and a thousand times greater sin than ,i myself am able to see1 know and feel4 ,o ,lord1 enter not into judgment with ,thy servant1 for in ,thy sight shall no man living be justified4 ,have mercy upon me for the sake of ,jesus ,christ1 ,thy dear ,son1 my ,lord and ,saviour1 and through ,thy great mercy1 which is greater than the sins of all men1 blot out my transgressions4 ,wash me clean with hysop and sprinkle me with the pure blood of ,thy ,son1 which was shed upon the cross4 ,may ,i be and remain ,thy child and heir1 a vessel of ,thy mercy1 a fountain and dwelling of the ,holy ,spirit4 ,o1 ,lord1 redeem1 comfort and quicken me6 ,grant unto me ,thy grace anew6 ,gladden my distressed spirit and my troubled and broken heart with ,thy holy1 joyful and life-giving ,spirit4 ,the broken reed and smoking flax ,thou wilt not1 ,o ,lord1 bruise and quench4 ,thou wilt not cast me away from ,thy countenance forever1 this ,i know full well4 ,thou wilt not permit me to despair1 but wilt favor me with ,thy true ,spirit1 who will enkindle and confirm in me true faith and comfort4 ,o1 ,lord6 my ,god and ,father1 ,thou faithful ,god1 hear my prayer1 that ,i may continue to be and remain ,thy child and temple1 now and eternally4 ,permit me not to fall into error and vice against my conscience4 ,save me from blood guiltiness and from all evil4 ,may ,i ever rejoice in ,thy ,word1 that ,i may willingly hear the same1 read and ponder over it and that ,i may therewith serve and benefit others1 that ,i may speak of it day and night1 and proclaim ,thy righteousness and glory continually2 and ,i will love1 adore1 praise1 thank and serve ,thee1 my ,god and ,lord1 and ,thy dear ,son1 my ,saviour ,jesus ,christ1 together with the ,holy ,ghost1 now and in all eternity with all angels and men4 ,amen4 #cg4 ,prayer for ,reconciliation with our ,neighbor4 ,gracious ,jesus1 through ,thy grace ,i have prepared myself and am about to seek the forgiveness of my sins in private confession2 but ,i remember1 that ,thou hast said and earnestly commanded3 if thou bring thy gift before the altar and there rememberest that thy brother hath aught against thee3 leave there thy gift before the altar and go thy way1 first be reconciled to thy brother and then come and offer thy gift4 ,now ,i have unfortunately fallen into misunderstanding and variance with my neighbor1 hence do ,thou so bestow upon me ,thy grace and so overrule my heart1 that ,i may be willing to be reconciled with him4 ,i acknowledge the hardness of my heart and confess that it is hard for me to subdue my flesh and blood and to banish all anger and revenge4 ,but it is my hope1 yea1 my prayer1 that ,thou1 ,lord1 wilt take away my stony heart and grant unto me a heart of flesh1 that is3 a loving1 reconciled heart1 and cause me to love my enemy1 to bless him that curses me1 to do good unto those1 that hate me1 and to pray for those who despitefully abuse and persecute me4 ,o6 may ,i meditate upon that judgment and that terrible account which ,i must give unto ,thee1 that ,i may renounce that enmity which designs death and destruction1 and according to ,thy commandment become reconciled with my adversary whilst ,i am in the way with him1 and never more permit the sun to go down upon my wrath4 ,and as ,i1 in ,thy name1 pardon and forgive all those1 who have offended me1 so let me find all those1 whom ,i have grieved and irritated1 ready with a willing heart1 to pardon and forgive my offences against them4 ,o1 ,jesus6 forgive all our sins1 and govern our hearts1 that we may live with each other in a christian and peaceful manner and that we may praise ,thy name here in time1 until in heaven we shall glorify ,thee forever4 ,amen4 ,brief ,instruction concerning the ,holy ,supper4 ,why do you desire to go to the ,holy ,supper8 ,this question each one should lay before his conscience before he approaches the ,lord's table4 ,for there are not a few who are either altogether obtuse and thoughtless1 or they come to the ,holy ,supper with an entirely wrong intention4 ,some will go from mere custom1 others because they are admonished to do so by their parents1 others because they consider the partaking of the ,lord's ,supper a work of merit1 and still others because they wish to acquire and preserve the appearance and name of pious ,christians before men4 ,it is no wonder that such partakers of the ,holy ,supper receive no blessings from it1 and that they become the more wicked1 the longer they so continue4 ,a communicant who desires to receive the ,holy ,supper unto his salvation1 must1 in the first place1 clearly understand what the ,holy ,supper is and for what ,christ has instituted it1 and1 in the second place1 he must have a penitent heart4 ,such have an altogether false conception of the ,holy ,supper1 who regard it as a mere feast at which a person does but commemorate ,christ's sufferings and death4 ,no1 the ,holy ,supper is the exalted and holy mystery1 in which ,christ with the consecrated bread gives us his body to eat1 and with the consecrated wine gives us his blood to drink1 even the same body which he took on himself from the virgin ,mary and gave in death for our sins1 and the same blood which he shed upon the cross for the remission of our sins4 ,true1 we cannot see this with our eyes1 we cannot taste it with our mouth1 nor can we understand it with our reason1 but must believe it1 for our ,lord and ,saviour says3 ,take1 eat1 this is my body2 take1 drink1 this is my blood4 ,our ,lord and ,saviour is true1 and certainly he will fulfill what he says in the words of his testament2 he is of infinite wisdom1 and knows of ways and means for the fulfillment of his promises1 even though it be beyond our comprehension2 he is almighty1 with whom nothing is impossible1 who can do infinitely more than we are able to ask or think4 ,if we believe with all earnestness1 that it is not mere bread and wine1 but also the true body and blood of our ,saviour1 who is ,god and man in one person1 which we receive in the ,holy ,supper1 then we will not be thoughtless and indifferent1 but we will approach the table of the ,lord with devotional and humble hearts and with the centurion exclaim3 ,lord1 ,i am not worthy that ,thou shouldst come under my roof6 ,the benefits derived from the ,holy ,supper are threefold3 first1 by a worthy partaking of the ,holy ,supper we receive the forgiveness of sin and are assured of the same4 ,our gracious ,god has given many and manifold means to assure the poor sinner of the forgiveness of his sins2 such means are1 the preaching of the ,gospel1 ,holy ,baptism1 ,absolution and the ,holy ,supper4 ,we should not ask the impertinent question1 why ,god has given us four means of grace1 instead of one1 but rather thank him1 that he has so richly blessed us in making us partakers of the forgiveness of our sins1 and that he1 through these means1 gives unto us a joyful heart and a certain assurance that we are acceptable unto him4 ,whoever knows from own experience1 how important it is for one whose heart is terrified on account of his sins1 to believe in the forgiveness of such sins1 will readily conceive the greatness of divine mercy and care1 in not providing only one1 but many means1 through which we have the assurance of the forgiveness of our sins4 ,therefore1 just as certain as with your mouth you eat the body of our ,lord and ,saviour ,jesus ,christ which was given for you in death for the forgiveness of your sins1 and drink that blood which was shed for the remission of your sins1 just so certain also should you be that such forgiveness is your portion and inheritance4 ,second1 the ,holy ,supper also confers life4 ,this is not a temporal1 natural life1 which we have received through birth and which is nourished through the ordinary food and drink1 but it is that new1 spiritual life1 which has been regenerated through the new birth in ,holy ,baptism1 and which subsists by virtue of faith in the ,lord ,jesus and in love to ,god and our neighbor4 ,but inasmuch as this life is yet weak and imperfect and constant growth is necessary1 the ,lord has instituted the ,holy ,supper as a spiritual means of nourishment1 in order to strengthen the new spiritual life4 ,luther says concerning this3 ,the ,holy ,supper is rightly regarded as food for the soul which nourishes and strengthens the new man2 for through ,baptism we are first born again1 but there still remains the old ,adam in our flesh and blood2 there are so many temptations and impediments thrown in the way by the world and the devil1 that we often grow weary and languid and sometimes fall4 ,hence the ,holy ,supper is given us as a daily nourishment and food that our faith may grow and be strengthened1 and that in such contest it may not fall back1 but ever grow stronger and stronger2 for the new life must be such as always to increase and progress2 it has on the other hand1 to suffer much2 for the devil is such a wrathful enemy1 when he sees that one opposes him and assails the old man1 and he is unable to prevail with his power1 then he will sneak and creep around on all sides1 making use of all kinds of artifice and keeps on until he finally has made us weary1 that a person either falls from the faith altogether1 or gives way to disgust and impatience4 ,thereto then this comfort is given1 that the heart1 when it feels the temptations too great to bear1 receives new strength and solace from the ,holy ,supper4 ,but1 thirdly1 the ,holy ,supper also confers eternal salvation4 ,just as sin1 as long as it is not forgiven1 deprives us of salvation1 so sin which is forgiven opens unto us the door of eternal salvation4 ,where there is forgiveness of sin1 there is also life and salvation4 ,but if we would obtain this threefold blessed benefit from the ,holy ,supper1 we must receive it worthily and well prepared4 ,this is however not a worthiness brought about by the law1 but by the ,gospel1 and does not consist in a perfect life and entire purity of the soul from sin2 but much more in this1 that we are conscious of our unworthiness and sinfulness2 that we have a heart poor in spirit and mournful1 and long heartily after the forgiveness of sin1 that we also comfort ourselves with it or wish to comfort2 that we regard our sins to be very great1 but that we rejoice in the help which is found in none other than the ,lord ,jesus ,christ4 ,on the other hand1 all those communicants are unworthy and unfit1 who in their self-righteous conceit think it unnecessary to have the forgiveness of sin1 as was the case with the ,pharisee1 who stood and prayed thus with himself3 ,god1 ,i thank ,thee1 that ,i am not as other men are1--or who entirely doubt the forgiveness of sin1 as did ,cain1 who said unto the ,lord3 ,my punishment is greater than ,i can bear1 and who will not permit himself to be delivered from his despondent thoughts1 or those who continue in evil purpose and who knowingly go on and serve sin1 or who live in malicious hatred against their neighbor4 ,when such unworthy communicants receive the ,holy ,supper1 it is true1 they also receive the body and blood of ,christ1 but they receive it unto judgment and unto the increase of their own damnation4 ,hence1 too1 ,st4 ,paul gives the earnest admonition3 ,let a man examine himself1 and so let him eat of that bread and drink of that cup1 for whoso eateth and drinketh unworthily1 eateth and drinketh damnation to himself4 ,now1 whoever recognizes in himself the above named characteristics of an unworthy communicant1 should not dare to approach the table of the ,lord in this condition2 not that he should remain away1 but in the meanwhile he should examine himself1 and instead of being an impenitent1 become a penitent sinner4 ,but are not also weak believers to be numbered among the unworthy communicants8 ,by no means4 ,but much more those who are both weak in faith and defective in godly life1 and who are overtaken in this or that sin1 and who painfully feel their weakness and long to become stronger1 are ,christ's right welcome guests at his table2 such the ,lord does not cast away1 but much more invites to come2 for he instituted the ,holy ,supper especially for the weak and infirm1 that through this spiritual nourishment they might become stronger4 ,he extends unto all such the gracious call3 ,come unto me all ye that are weary and are heavy laden1 and ,i will give you rest1 and whosoever comes1 ,i will in no wise cast out4 #ch4 ,morning ,prayer of a ,communicant4 ,lord ,jesus1 ,i this morning rejoice that ,i1 with other pious ,christians1 am permitted to receive ,thy body and blood in1 with and under the consecrated bread and wine4 ,o6 how my soul longs for the courts of the ,lord and for the holy altar4 ,as the hart panteth after the water brooks1 so panteth my soul after ,thee1 ,o my ,god4 ,for ,thou art my ,shepherd1 ,i shall not want4 ,o1 ,lord ,jesus1 as ,thou hast begun the good work in me a poor miserable man1 so also accomplish the same in mercy1 through the gracious power of the ,holy ,spirit unto ,thy name's glory and unto my own welfare and eternal salvation4 ,dear ,redeemer1 ,i am1 it is true1 not worthy that ,i should come under ,thy roof1 but ,thy grace1 which is all-sufficient1 make me worthy and amply qualify me1 that the precious food and drink of ,thy true body and blood may quicken my soul in this heavenly feast of joy and love4 ,clothe me with the garment of salvation and with the robe of ,thy righteousness by a true faith1 that ,i may not be found among the pretending guests and would-be-,christians1 but may be a worthy partaker at ,thy table and receive all ,thy gracious treasures which ,thou hast acquired for me4 ,o ,lord ,jesus1 may ,thy grace be and remain with me1 as ,i ever put my trust in ,thee4 ,may ,thy visitation preserve my spirit1 my life and walk4 ,and whatever else is needful1 grant ,thou1 ,o ,lord1 unto me in this life and in the life hereafter4 ,give me true repentance1 renew my heart1 deliver my body and soul4 ,o ,lord6 hear this my desire1 and do not permit my prayer to remain unanswered1 that ,i may be acceptable unto ,thee in time and in eternity4 ,amen1 in ,jesus' name1 ,amen4 #ci4 ,prayer for a worthy shouldst so friendly call me8 ,were ,i even holier than the angels1 yet would ,i not be worthy of this repast2 how then should ,i be worthy1 seeing that ,i am of impure lips1 yea1 an abomination and offensive1 if ,thou doest not make me worthy8 ,therefore come ,thou to my succor with ,thy grace1 and prepare me4 ,thou hast said3 ,whosoever cometh to me1 ,thou wilt in no wise cast out4 ,then take my soul into ,thy favor1 according to ,thy great mercies4 ,dear ,jesus1 remember that of myself ,i have indeed much evil1 but nothing good2 so help me for ,thy great goodness' sake4 ,o see how poor and miserable ,i am6 ,remember ,thy faithfulness1 ,o ,saviour of the world1 and fill my heart with grace4 ,o6 how ,i long to appear at ,thy table with glowing devotion and becoming reverence in full faith1 but where is the power to do1 if ,i do not receive it of ,thee1 thou ,author and ,finisher of my faith8 ,therefore give ,thou unto me whatsoever is pleasing to ,thee4 ,graciously take from me whatsoever displeases ,thee1 or cover it1 at least1 ,i most humbly pray ,thee1 with the cloak of ,thy righteousness4 ,o6 blessed is the soul that finds favor with ,thee6 ,open ,thou mine eyes that ,i may behold the wonders in ,thy ordinances4 ,rouse my heart1 and free me of all strange thoughts1 increase my hope1 inflame my desire1 make ardent my devotion1 purge me of all uncleanness1 and sanctify ,amen4 #dj4 ,thanksgiving after ,partaking of the ,holy ,supper4 ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 ,i give ,thee most hearty thanks and praise1 that ,thou hast again washed me1 a poor sinful being1 of all my transgressions1 and1 for the most certain assurance of such washing and forgiveness of all my sins1 hast permitted me to eat of ,thy true body1 and to drink of ,thy true blood1 and1 taking me as an impure child after such cleansing1 hast again received me into the fatherly arms of ,thy grace and mercy1 and doest thus show and present me blameless1 pure and without fault unto ,thy heavenly ,father4 ,i pray ,thee most heartily and from my whole soul1 that1 after ,thy great benefit1 ,thou wouldst yet add this in abundance1 and graciously grant me ,thy grace through the working of the ,holy ,ghost1 that ,i may be truly sensible of ,thy great goodness1 thankfully receive it1 and from my heart magnify and praise ,thee during my whole life4 ,and do ,thou further work in me through ,thy ,holy ,ghost1 and effect that ,i also may heartily forgive my neighbor anything he may have done against me1 as ,thou1 ,o ,lord1 hast pardoned and forgiven all my great and numerous transgressions1 yea1 and hast entirely wiped them out of ,thy remembrance2 that ,i may also love my neighbor1 and from my heart show him all manner of good1 even as ,thou1 ,o ,lord1 hast shown unto me more than ,i am able to thank for2 in order that ,thou1 ,o good and faithful ,god1 in us mayest be magnified and praised together with the ,father and ,holy ,ghost throughout all ages4 ,amen4 #da4 ,prayer that ,god would hereafter keep us from sin1 and if we sin1 that ,he would not reckon it to our account4 ,o thou kind and merciful ,god1 ,thou dear ,father in heaven1 ,thou hast out of grace and divine love1 bestowed upon us ,thy dear ,son1 and with ,him all grace1 life and salvation4 ,we pray ,thee1 dear ,father1 preserve unto us this blessed treasure and heavenly gift1 the gracious countenance of ,thy dear ,son1 ,jesus ,christ1 that we may never lose ,him through unthankfulness1 or otherwise be deprived of ,him4 ,we are indeed poor1 miserable and frail beings1 who fall from one sin into another2 we now sin in thought1 now in word and deed1 and it is with difficulty that we stand4 ,here we never find rest and peace2 the devil watches our very thoughts1 stirs them up1 and fans the passions into flame1 the world watches our words and deeds1 walk and life1 and gives us much offense and occasion to sin1 our own flesh also never rests1 besides yet all the occasional sins1 vices and weaknesses which daily beset us1 and which terribly trouble our conscience1 entirely destroy the joy of our heart and turn it into sorrow and sadness4 ,therefore we pray ,thee1 ,thou kind and merciful ,god1 that when1 as it may happen1 we have become negligent and unthankful1 and do not so walk as we should--,o do ,thou still remain our gracious ,god2 be ,thou friendly towards us1 comfort us in goodness and mercy1 do not hold us accountable or make us suffer for our manifold sins1 but purge our hearts and consciences by ,thy word1 in order that we may serve ,thee in sorrow and joy1 in the morning early as the innocent ,lamb accused1 whipped with scourges1 and finally sentenced to death1 suspended on the cross1 pierced in your hands and feet with ruthless nails1 and not a member of ,thy most holy body remaining without a wound3--,alas6 when ,i see all this1 ,i see nothing but my sins1 guilt and iniquities which brought ,thee into this plight1 and for the sake of which ,thou didst freely enter into such anguish and distress1 into such sadness1 pain and suffering4 ,alas6 my ,lord1 it is all my guilt for which ,thou didst suffer--,i am the cause of it all4 ,how wonderful are the ways and purposes of ,god6 ,the ,innocent ,one must pay for the guilt of the guilty1 the ,good ,one must suffer the punishments of the wicked4 ,the ,lord must atone the guilt of the servant1 and that which sinful man has brought upon himself ,god must bear4 ,o ,thou ,son of the living ,god1 how great is ,thy love and favor towards us mortals6 ,what hast ,thou not done and suffered to fall in quickening drops upon the earth1 in order that it may again bring forth the ordained fruits so necessary for the support of our temporal life1 which ,thou in ,thy paternal providence hast already ordained in the first creation4 ,as of old ,thou didst unlock the windows of heaven in answer to the faithful prayer of ,thy servant and prophet ,elias1 and didst cause it to rain upon the thirsty earth1 so we also confide the same to ,thee now1 that ,thou wilt let ,thy grace reign over us in this season of heat and drought1 and out of ,thy fatherly care for us1 grant us our earnest during the past ,church-year4 ,thou hast thus far granted unto us ,thy holy ,word and its public preaching1 also the use of the holy sacraments1 although on account of our unthankfulness we have indeed deserved that ,thou shouldst have withheld such goodness4 ,we are indeed no better and have not sinned against ,thee less than so many of our brethren in the faith elsewhere1 from whom ,thou1 through ,thy just judgment1 hast either entirely or measurably withheld the word of ,thy gospel and its public preaching2 and it appears that ,thou1 through ,thy judgment1 wouldst yet at many more places take away the light of ,thy ,word4 ,o ,lord6 we are indeed too insignificant for all ,thy mercies1 which ,thou hast hitherto shown us unworthy servants1 and that ,thou doest still deal with us so sparingly4 ,forgive us in mercy all our sins by which we1 whether by the neglect and incomplete performance of good or the committing of evil1 have offended ,thee during the past ,church-year4 ,grant this to be our first blessing in this ,church-year1 that ,thou wilt with the blood of ,thy dear ,son blot out all our sins of the past year1 and in order that we may be worthy of such grace1 do ,thou work true repentance in all our hearts1 so that we may not bear into the new ,church-year any of our old sins unforgiven and which we do not by ,thy power mean entirely to abandon4 ,preserve unto us still further ,thy holy word and sacraments and thus the kingdom of ,thy ,son among us1 and do not bestow such power upon the enemy1 that will enable him to rob us of such gifts and that the kingdom of darkness be extended among us4 ,in this however1 dear ,father1 look not upon that what we are deserving1 but that the honor of ,thy ,son be not blasphemed by the enemies who may imagine to have destroyed ,his kingdom among us4 ,preserve all our faithful teachers and ministers1 whom ,thou hast given us1 and bestow upon them1 at this beginning of the ,church-year1 new light and strength in ,thy ,holy ,spirit1 that they may present unto us1 by ,thy power and presence1 ,thy ,word in its purity and simplicity without the admixture of human wisdom2 also may they at all times have the wisdom and light rightly to conceive the most needful things to be treated of before their christian congregations4 ,permit them therefore not to speak what they desire1 but do ,thou alone rule their tongues and hearts1 that they may always speak what is pleasing unto ,thee4 ,give such efficacy to ,thy ,word and ,thy holy ,sacraments1 that we may also in this ,church-year experience that they are still the blessed means of our salvation1 that they will save our souls4 ,seal anew the good ,thou hast already wrought in the hearts of ,thy children during the past year1 and the ,word ,thou hast made effectual among them2 and let it still further manifest its power in teaching the ignorant1 in converting the unregenerate1 in convicting the malicious1 in strengthening the souls that already know ,thee1 whose number ,thou wilt also in the ways known to ,thee largely increase during this year4 ,grant also unto all hearers1 that they not only receive the ,word out of the mouth of their pastors with attention and meekness1 but also at all times1 whilst hearing1 present their hearts unto ,thee in such stillness and resignation1 that ,thy ,holy ,spirit may complete the work of faith in them1 and by whose influence they may during this ,church-year lead a more holy life before ,thee than heretofore4 ,especially grant ,thy grace that we make ,thy ,word the firm foundation of our
