within these pages are recitals of scenes and incidents in a field of existence fortunately unfamiliar to the majority of our readers4 ,the subject has been handled without any attempt to embellish in presenting these sketches of daily experiences among the outcasts of society1 no straining for effect1 no striving to paint word pictures that may touch the heart4 ,it is simply the story of genuine leaders to take us out of this wilderness in which we find ourselves4 ,a fine moral leadership is the exception rather than the rule4 ,unless the standard be lifted up the hosts will not her are his own foes1 and insults flung in the face of political liberty are felt by him as an affront to himself4 ,our prophets must be men who feel the woes that they oppose1 men who feel the humiliation before they can strike with the right arm clothed with power4 ,indifference to the public weal on the part of the average political leader is one of the most distressing features of our political situation4 ,these people do not seem capable of feeling righteous indignation in the presence of the moral infamy by which they are confronted1 and hence their words do not come forth as thunderbolts1 but as spent balls4 ,beware of the man whose heart has not been pierced by the woes of his country4 ,the sting is the needed spur to effort4 ,the sleeping lion is not dangerous2 but let and striking presentation of the gospel--not set forth in theological terms as abstract truth--but presented in the form of a concrete example--a picture with ,christ himself as the interpreter4 ,and now as we look at this picture with ,christ to explain and interpret it to us1 let us see what he will teach us concerning the gospel4 ,first1 we can learn here for whom the gospel is not intended4 -------- ,beloved1 if ,god so loved us1 we ought also to love one another4--#a ,john #d3aa4 -------- ,evidently it is not intended for those who find fault with it4 ,christ is among a people who seem you and ye have not danced2 we have mourned to you and ye have not wept4 ,they found fault with ,john the ,baptist because he was too severe--they found fault with ,jesus because he was too liberal4 it keeps people out of the kingdom8 ,yea1 more than that1 it often keeps those who are in the kingdom from receiving the blessings which otherwise might be theirs4 ,there are those on the outside who remain out because they are constantly finding fault4 ,there are those on the inside who are always unhappy for the same reason4 ,if the preacher hews to the line they say he is a scold--if he doesn't they say he is afraid to stand up for what he believes1 and so it goes4 ,illustration3 ,,rev4 ,t4 ,m4 ,,hawes1 ,d4,d4 ,the beloved pastor of the ,highland ,presbyterian ,church4 ,the ,beloved ,john of -------- ,he brought me to the banqueting house1 and his banner over me was love4--,s4 of ,s4 #b3d4 -------- ,again we can learn from this picture that the gospel is not intended for those who do not think they need it2 not intended for self-righteous people4 ,no one is ever going to appreciate the gospel until he feels the need of it4 ,the spirit of the ,pharisee will shut us out from the blessings of the gospel whether we are church members or not4 ,simon looked down on the sinful woman and felt that he was far superior to her4 ,evidently he felt no need of a ,saviour4 ,the ,scribes and ,pharisees rejected ,christ on the very grounds that he was the friend of publicans and sinners4 ,oh1 yes1 in the very nature of the case the gospel cannot reach those who do not feel their need of some power beyond themselves4 ,furthermore1 the gospel is not meant for those who are ashamed of it4 ,there is something very touching and beautiful in this picture of the woman who was a sinner coming into this public court to do honor to ,christ4 ,she had true humility4 ,simon was far from doing anything of this kind1 he was willing to show a certain sort of respect for ,christ1 but he would have been too proud to have ever done such a thing as this4 ,ashamed of ,jesus1 sooner far ,let evening blush to own a star4 ,is it not true that a sense of being ashamed of the gospel shuts out from its blessings those who entertain such unworthy feelings8 -------- ,thou shalt love the ,lord thy ,god with all thy heart4--,mk4 #ab3cj4 -------- ,finally1 let us learn from this picture that the gospel is not meant for those who are not glad to make a free-will offering of sacrifice as a token of this grateful love4 ,this woman brought an alabaster box of ointment4 ,my head with oil thou didst not anoint2 but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment4 ,christ did not exact this of her--it was a free-will offering4 ,if the gospel does not draw out our gratitude and liberality1 then it has never touched us4 ,it is not because of our gifts that we are forgiven1 but it is because of our forgiveness that we give4 ,to whom little is forgiven1 the same loveth little4 ,that man may last but never lives1 ,who much receives but nothing gives2 ,whom none can love1 whom none can thank1 ,creation's blot1 creation's blank4 ,but he who walks from day to day ,in generous acts his tear-drop was a jewel4 ,the breaking of the alabaster box of ointment was a sweet incense to ,jesus1 but this ten-fold sinner bathing his very feet with her penitential tears was a sight which made the angels in heaven rejoice1 for there is more joy in heaven over one sinner that repenteth than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance4 ,simon despised this woman's tears and sat unmoved at the pathetic scene--but not so with ,jesus4 ,he could refrain himself no longer1 but speaking out before all the company he said1 ,thy sins are forgiven4 ,oh1 gracious words6 ,how sweet and soft must have been this music to the ears of this sinful outcast4 ,they fall as soft as snow on the sea ,and melt in the heart as instantly4 ,finally1 ,i learn from this picture which ,christ is interpreting for us that the gospel is for sinners who commit themselves in implicit faith to ,christ4 ,simon1 ,i have somewhat to say unto thee4 ,behold this woman2 you have done a great deal of back to the beginning of this sermon of our ,lord and we will hear him saying1 ,blessed are the poor in spirit4 ,first of all to become salt and light one must be poor in spirit2 he must awake to the fact that he owes a million and has not one cent with which to pay4 ,from his heart he must say1 -------- ,nothing in my hands ,i bring1 ,simply to thy cross ,i cling4 ,create in me a clean heart1 ,o a body sore on the social system1 that extermination should be resorted to4 ,only ,one ,true ,reform4 ,furthermore1 he created intense surprise by his assertion that in twenty years' experience in handling criminals he could recall only one case of true reformation on the part of an habitual4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,hon4 ,,and ,,mrs4 ,,john ,l4 ,,whitman1 ,,chicago1 ,,ill4 ,mr4 ,whitman is ,mr4 ,peters recommended various ways of dealing with crime and its perpetrators1 and then for the irredeemably incorrigible made this recommendation3 ,and then if they fail to embrace the many opportunities offered them1 and after everything has been done that is possible for mankind to do1 they repeatedly persist in returning to their old ways1 ,i think in such a case life has proven a failure1 and they become a menace and a burden to our social welfare and should be exterminated4 ,like ,weeds in a ,garden4 ,they are like weeds in a garden and unless removed will supersede the useful plants4 ,many students of criminology have suggested life imprisonment1 but in my opinion that has proven a failure4 ,by that method the menace is removed1 but the burden remains4 ,i am sorry beyond reformation and redemption and slay him8 ,man is too fallible to condemn another as an habitual criminal and exterminate him4 ,no one knows when a man has passed beyond the pale of reform4 ,as a matter of fact1 many and many a criminal branded as 'habitual' has been saved to a useful life4 ,i most heartily disagree with any suggestion to execute any man on the theory that he is irredeemable4 ,hope ,while ,there ,is ,life4 ,rabbi ,tobias ,scharfarber--,in the first place ,i am opposed to capital punishment1 but1 in any event1 ,i should not agree with this suggestion of ,mr4 ,peters4 ,it is much like ,osler's plan to kill off men of sixty or more years of age1 or ,ingersoll's suggestion that when a man believed himself to be a failure and useless to the world he should go and shoot his brains out4 ,while a man lives there is hope for him1 and no one has either power or right to say that he will always be a menace to society4 ,christ in ,his charity taught those who came to ,him1 ,ill deeds should pardoned be seventy times seven2 ,succor the least here and you do the same to ,him2 ,these are his precepts on earth and in heaven4 ,oh1 then1 when laboring hard for simply that if he was through with an evil life1 if he was tired of wrong-doing and was determined to do right1 there was a love that could forgive him1 and a power that could help and keep him in the future4 ,when at last we knelt together there ,i prayed that ,god1 who could bring light into our darkness1 might dispel the thick clouds that had shut in this soul from hope1 and bring to him the revelation that would change his life4 ,there were tears in our eyes as we parted1 and1 taking my hand in his he said3 ,i will try1 ,brother ,herr4 ,he did try1 and1 more than that he conquered4 ,at first it was a stern battle of an awakened will and conscience fighting against desperate odds4 ,the feeling that friends were watching and waiting anxiously for good reports proved an undoubted answer was a quick1 emphatic1 earnest ,yes4 ,and the man who said ,yes was ,william ,a4 ,pinkerton1 and he knows4 ,probably no living man knows more intimate details about the individual members of the underworld1 those who are active criminals to-day1 as well as the notorious crooks of the past1 than the head of the ,pinkerton ,detective ,agency4 ,and every crook will tell you1 what every men in the class we call hardened criminals--have become honest men to my knowledge4 ,it is not true1 as some recent writer said1 that as many crooks turn honest as there are honest men turn crooked1 but ,i believe that one of the reasons is that so few men are willing to lend a helping hand4 ,i don't mean that every crook is ready to reform if he is encouraged1 but ,i do mean that society makes it hard for any man who has once been a criminal to lead an honest life4 ,and ,i'll tell you another thing1 continued ,mr4 ,pinkerton3 ,i'm prouder of the fact that ,i have helped a few criminals to become honest men than of all the work ,i have done in putting criminals behind the bars4 ,i'm proud of the fact that every crook knows that ,pinkerton will deal squarely with him if he will deal squarely with ,pinkerton--that ,i believe it is as important to keep faith with a bank thief as with a bank president4 ,i know a score of business men in ,chicago--not saloonkeepers1 but reputable merchants--who have criminal records4 ,these men have done time and have paid their debt to society for their crimes4 ,i cannot tell you their names1 for it would be unfair to them and to their wives and families1 many of whom have no suspicion that there is anything wrong in the pasts of their husbands and fathers4 ,besides1 when society discovers that a man is a former criminal it is not content to cancel the debt no matter how much imprisonment at hard labor the former crook may have given in expiation of his sin4 ,i know men in trusted positions in ,new ,york who were convicts4 ,in many cases only the man himself and his employer know the secret and sometimes the employer does not know it4 ,i know men scattered all over the ,west--business men1 professional men1 many of them wealthy and prominent citizens--who have seen the inside of ,joliet1 ,moyomensing1 ,sing ,sing or ,leavenworth4 ,they have sons and daughters who never have suspected and never will suspect the truth4 ,these are good men--as good men as any living4 ,they have turned away from their old ways1 in many cases have changed their names1 and who shall say they are not as much to be respected as the honest man who never was tempted1 never was forced into crime8 ,i'll tell you about some of them4 ,when ,i was a boy in ,chicago there were two brothers1 neighbors1 about the age of myself and my younger brother1 and we were friends4 ,when the civil war broke out ,i went into the army secret service at the age of fifteen1 and the older of these two boys1 ,john1 enlisted in an ,illinois regiment4 ,jerry1 the younger1 was not old enough1 but a little later1 when the government began offering a bounty for soldiers1 he became a bounty jumper4 ,he would enlist1 get the bounty money1 then desert and enlist over again under another name4 ,he was with a band of young fellows who were engaged in that way of getting easy money1 and who found it so easy that they turned to other kinds of crime4 ,when the war was over ,john came back to ,chicago and settled down as a rather plodding sort of a mechanic4 ,he tried to get ,jerry to straighten out1 but the younger brother was too far along the road to prison4 ,in those days the ,northwestern ,railroad used wood for fuel1 and the wood agent of the road was ,amos ,snell--the same ,snell who was later murdered by ',willie ,tascott4' ,he lived in a suburb of ,chicago1 and one night ,jerry and his crowd went out there and 'stuck' up the whole family--robbed them of everything they had4 ,john was along with them1 lying in the bottom of the hack4 ,the police got a clew through the hack-driver and rounded up the whole band4 ,all of them1 including ,john1 were sentenced to five years each except ,jerry4 ,when he came into the hands of the police a citizen who had been held up on the street some time before identified him as the hold-up man1 and on the strength of that the ,judge gave him fifteen years4 ,it was an unjust sentence1 for ,jerry had not committed the hold-up--that was found out later4 ,well1 ,john's old ,colonel and some other army men and my father got together and got a pardon for ,john1 who had merely gone along with the crowd and had taken no part in the robbery4 ,he went back to work at his trade of brass finisher1 but ,jerry stayed in ,joliet1 rebelling against those long unjust years of his sentence4 ,jerry was put to work in the engine room of the prison and soon displayed great aptitude for machinery4 ,he served out his term with time off for good behavior and finally got out4 ,i met him in ,chicago4 ,he was despondent4 ,he felt that he had no chance to be anything but a crook1 but he knew the terrible chances a once convicted man runs if he returns to crime4 ,i told him the best thing for him to do was to go to ,new ,york1 and ,i sent him on to my brother ,robert1 who had also known him as a boy4 ,reform of ,jerry4 ,now1 here's a part of this story that will interest you4 ,robert had a friend who was chief engineer of a building in ,ann street4 ,he told this friend about ,jerry1 and the engineer said he'd take a chance on him4 ,he put ,jerry to work stoking the boiler at a dollar and a half a day4 ,after a year or so there was a vacancy and ,jerry became assistant engineer4 ,a little while later the chief engineer resigned and ,jerry after awhile1 the ex-crook1 became chief engineer4 ,he left there after awhile to take charge of a big plant on ,long ,island1 and he sent for his brother ,john and gave him a job4 ,a few years later the two brothers called on me in ,chicago4 ,they had saved about #f1jjj between them and were on their way to a new town in the ,west to start a manufacturing business of their own4 ,each had married a girl who knew nothing of their prison record and had children4 ,they prospered exceedingly4 ,john died several years ago1 but only a few months ago1 when my brother ,robert died1 an old man1 whom nobody but myself recognized1 came from the ,west for the funeral and shed tears at the grave4 ,it was ,jerry4 ,he is still living1 and is the leading citizen of his town and worth at least half a million dollars4 ,criminals who reform8 ,there are thousands of them4 ,i remember a little ,liverpool ,irishman who was a pickpocket around ,new ,york4 ,he was known as ',jimmy the ,nibbler'4 ,the police picked him up in ,tennessee1 where he lifted somebody's pocketbook1 and he was sent to ,nashville for seven years4 ,in the prison they put him to work in the hospital4 ,then the cholera epidemic broke out4 ,jim helped the doctors and nurses1 and when the doctors got sick he nursed them and the warden and his family and helped save a good many lives4 ,after the epidemic was over the warden and the ,prison ,board were so grateful they got ,jim a pardon and made up a purse of #cej for him4 ,with the money in his pocket he came right to ,chicago to see me4 ,i began to lecture him on the futility of going back to the life he had led before4 ',i've cut that all out1' he said4 ',i'm not going to be a gun any more4 ,i've been studying medicine down there in ,nashville4 ,the doctors have been telling me things and giving me medical books to read and now ,i want to get into one of these colleges where ,i can get a diploma quick4' ,there were a number of diploma factories1 as the lower class of medical colleges were called1 running in ,chicago then1 and ,jim found he had money enough to go through one of them--in the front door and out the back4 ,but he got his diploma and license to practise and started for one of the new towns in the ,west4 ,i looked him up a while ago4 ,he comes pretty near being the most prominent citizen in the town4 ,he is a director in a national bank and the leading physician1 and has officiated at the births of half the present population4 ,moreover1 he is an enthusiastic church member4 ,but how long do you think it would take for the whole town to turn against him if they should ever learn out there that he is ',jimmy the ,nibbler'8 ,crooks that turn straight8 ,your next door neighbor1 your family physician1 even your clergyman1 may be one of them4 ,the world is full of them4 ,there was one man1 a professional thief1 a fellow who had done time in half a dozen ,state prisons and penitentiaries1 whom ,i used to labor with earnestly every time he got out1 but he apparently never tried to reform4 ,he was always doing time1 it seemed4 ,i lost track of him for several years4 ,then two years ago1 when the ,national ,association of ,chiefs of ,police was in session in ,buffalo1 ,i found a note in my box in my hotel signed by this man's name4 ,he said he was going to call at seven o'clock4 ,there was a banquet on for that evening1 and hundreds of police officials from every part of the ,united ,states were there4 ,i wondered if he knew what sort of a lion's den he was walking into4 ,sure enough he came into the hotel and spoke to me4 ',don't you know that you are surrounded by policemen1 some of whom are sure to spot you8' ,i asked him4 ',you're the only man in the world who knows me1' he said1 ',my name now is ,so and ,so'--giving me another name--'and ,i'm a respected and prosperous man4 ,i just wanted to let you know before you found it out for yourself1 for ,i knew you'd be on the square with me4' ,and ,i was4 ,so far as ,i knew he was not wanted for anything1 and what good would have come of exposing him8 ,thieves who resist the temptation to steal8 ,hundreds of them4 ,there's one right here1 only a few blocks from where we are talking4 ,he's the watchman in a big silk warehouse--and if there's anything your professional thief likes to steal1 short of money or diamonds1 it's silk1 for you can get so much value into so small a package4 ,this man was a professional safe blower1 and did several big jobs4 ,when he got out of prison ,i helped him to get the job he has now4 ,his employer knows his record4 ,i told it to him on the man's own request4 ,when work stops for the day this man is left alone in charge of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of valuable silks4 ,he isn't bonded1 for he couldn't get a bondsman if he wanted to4 ,he has held the job seven years now1 and not a cent's worth has been taken from the warehouse in that time4 ,you may say that he does not dare to steal--that he knows a single false move on his part will bring instant punishment4 ,but ,i say he has no desire to steal--that he has reformed4 ,and thousands of other criminals would reform if society would give them half a chance4 ,baffling ,hotel ,robberies4 ,several years ago there was a series of hotel robberies in ,new ,york that baffled the police4 ,the thief always worked with keys1 opening doors and then unlocking baggage left in rooms1 and he always got away with the goods4 ,at last one night the word came to headquarters that a man had been caught in one of the big hotels who was suspected of being the author of all the robberies4 ,i was visiting ,chief ,devery at the time and he asked me to go with him to the ,west ,thirtieth street station to look the man over4 ,the man arrested was a well dressed1 respectable looking little man1 with a white beard--the last man who would be taken for a thief if seen in a hotel corridor4 ,his face was vaguely familiar to me1 but ,i had some difficulty in placing him4 ,finally it struck me4 ,i had seen him nearly thirty years before on the occasion of a big prize fight in ,new ,orleans1 when he had been arrested for the same trick4 ,it came over me like a flash and ,i told him ,i knew him4 ',what's the use of making trouble8' he asked4 ',these fools don't know anything about me unless you put them wise4' ,i told ,chief ,devery what ,i remembered about the man1 who protested violently that he had never been in ,new ,orleans in his life4 ,then another thought struck me4 ',you've been in ,new ,orleans more than once1' ,i said4 ',the last time was about six months ago1 when you got ,denman ,thompson's diamonds in the ,st4 ,charles ,hotel4' ,i remembered the report of that case1 but it was a chance shot on my part1 for no one had seen the thief4 ,the old fellow denied this vigorously4 ,he was wearing a new derby hat4 ,i don't know what impulse prompted me1 but ,i took the hat off his head and looked inside4 ,it bore the mark of a ,new ,orleans hatter4 ,the ,chief and ,i left the station and had just turned into ,sixth avenue when ,i remembered the old fellow's name4 ,we went back to the station house and ,i confronted him again4 ,i told him his name4 ,he denied that it was his4 ',what's the use of making trouble1 ,mr4 ,pinkerton8' he pleaded4 ,his inadvertent use of my name1 which had not been mentioned there1 gave him away4 ',i don't know what kind of a case the police here have on you1' ,i told him1 'but we are retained by the ,jewelers' ,protective ,association1 and if you get after any jewelry drummers ,i'll make it hot for you4' ,and as a precaution ,i got his photograph from the ,new ,york police4 ,they didn't have much of a case on him and he got off4 ,not long after a jewelry drummer was robbed in a ,chicago hotel of about three thousand dollars' worth of diamonds which he had carelessly left in his grip instead of putting them in the safe4 ,the same day a friend of mine who was stopping in another hotel lost his new overcoat and told me about it4 ,i thought of the old man in the first job1 and found a chambermaid and bellboy who had seen him on the floor1 but didn't connect him with the second because he had never stolen anything but very valuable articles1 so far as ,i knew4 ,my friend had to leave for ,new ,york that night1 and some time in the evening ,i got a telegram from him which had been filed in ,fort ,wayne4 ',positive man who got my coat is in same sleeper1 ticketed to ,new ,york1' it read4 ,i wired my friend at a point further along the line to get off at ,pittsburg and hold a white handkerchief in his hand so he could be identified and be prepared to point out the thief4 ,then ,i got in touch with ,pittsburg by wire1 and sure enough back came a wire after a while to the effect that they had got the man1 whom my friend identified1 and found on him besides the overcoat about #c1jjj worth of diamonds4 ,i asked for a description and the one they wired fitted that of the man ,i had seen in ,new ,york4 ,i referred ,pittsburg to the man's photograph1 which had been published that week in a police periodical1 and they were sure they had the same man4 ,and so it proved4 ,he was brought back to ,chicago and convicted of the jewelry theft4 ,he served a short sentence1 and when he got out he came to me4 ,mind you1 this was an old man1 who had been a thief all his life--,i had known him as a thief more than thirty years before4 ,it is criminals of that kind that are commonly regarded as the most difficult to reform1 but even hardened and lifelong offenders like this man will go straight if they get the right kind of encouragement4 ,i found this old man apparently anxious to be honest1 but he had never had a chance after his first slip as a young man4 ,i determined to do what ,i could for him and ,i got him a job in ,new ,york4 ,he is more than seventy years old now1 but he is still holding that job1 and he hasn't made a false step since he got out of prison the last time4 ,do criminals ever reform8 ,i think ,i have told you enough to prove that they do--and ,i could tell you of hundreds of other instances if you needed any further proof4 99 99 99 of his two children1 and simply said that this ,christmas had lost all of its charms for him1 for instead of feeling joyful1 he felt sad all of to-day and yesterday1 and that we understood why1 for instead of four little girls1 he had only two4 ,he felt his inability to proceed further1 and gave the meeting over into the hands of ,bro4 ,herr to conduct as he saw fit1 and catching an idea from the foregoing remarks1 ,bro4 ,herr referred to the fact that years ago1 ,christmas was very sad to him4 ,that he was lying in a saloon in the city of ,louisville without friends and without hope4 ,then in a jovial manner showed by comparison what a difference then and now4 ,he then said3 ,i am so glad that ,jesus said3 ',him that cometh to me1 ,i will in no wise cast out2 ,i am so glad that he is the same yesterday1 to-day and forever4 ,he said3 ',follow me1 and ,i will make you fishers of men4 ,there is not a man behind prison bars that ,jesus ,christ cannot clean up and make him a man4 ,the audience sat up and took notice when he mentioned a man who had been a homeless wretch1 and a degraded sinner1 who had spent thirty-two years of his life behind prison bars1 but had been converted in the ,louisville jail and was now a man of ,god1 the leader in a ,rescue ,mission in one of our largest cities1 and had the financial support of eight of the wealthiest men in that city4 ,he said that whenever a man goes blind1 or deaf1 or is afflicted in any other way1 he is sent to a hospital for treatment1 and that this prison is a sort of hospital1 and that some of us are so blind that we cannot tell the difference between our own and other peoples' horses4 ,this simile was put forth in such a humorous manner as to cause much laughter4 ,he then launched into an earnest exhortation to the men to do better4 ,to quit their meanness1 as ,sam ,jones said4 ,cease from evil and learn to do well4 ,that to quit one's evil ways was only half the duty1 and that the remainder consisted in doing the right thing1 and you may have this assurance that the man who is serving the ,lord will not get into trouble4 ,an idle mind is the devil's work-shop4 ,in this connection he gave a very pretty illustration of how one's energies are used in either the right way or wrong way2 that if you build a fire under a steam boiler1 place the proper quantity of water in it1 and then open the throttle and allow the steam to get into the engine1 the entire machinery will perform a good work1 but if you shut off the steam and tie down the safety valve1 the steam is going to exert itself in a disastrous manner by an explosion1 and the killing of several men4 ,the wages of sin is death1 and if you can only open your eyes and see that1 you can also see that ,the gift of ,god is eternal life4 ,the only way under heaven by which a man can be saved1 is to come over to the service of ,god and begin to do that which is right4 ,now what is the purpose of ,christmas day8 ,the world has agreed that this is as near the birth of ,christ as we can possibly figure it2 it means that #aijg years ago ,jesus was born into the world1 and the star of ,bethlehem came and stood over the place where the young child lay2 the angels sang ,glory to ,god in the highest1 and on earth1 peace1 good will towards men1 and we celebrate the day in memory of that event4 ,what is the trouble to-day that causes all these penitentiaries over our land2 why all these jails and the strong arm of the law8 ,it is because men will not allow the gospel of ,jesus ,christ to reign in their hearts4 ,as long as the children of ,israel served the ,lord1 they were happy and prosperous1 but as soon as they turned to the flesh pots of ,egypt1 they began to despair and shame came upon them4 ,if you were asked what you would rather have above all things1 you would say1 ,just a piece of paper with the great seal of the state impressed upon it1 and the signature of the ,governor attached4 ,why8 ,because prison life is a hard life and you are tired of it4 ,if ,i were a prisoner1 ,i would want to make my confinement as pleasant as possible and ,i would become converted immediately1 for of all men on earth the man in prison should be the quickest to accept ,jesus ,christ4 ,i would not want to be a prisoner all my physical life1 and then a spiritual prisoner throughout eternity4 ,did it ever occur to you that hell must be infinitely worse than it is pictured8 ,we read of a place ,where their worm dieth not1 and the fire is not quenched4 ,if this is a picture of hell1 then what must the reality society as useful respected citizens3 ,my ,dearest ,friend3 ,it is very gratifying to find myself alone long enough to pen you a few lines4 ,arrived at #f3je p4m4 ,well1 ,i cannot tell you how very pleased everyone was to see me4 ,went in at once to see the president of a concern and told him everything4 ,he was entirely satisfied and told me to commence work in the morning1 which ,i did4 ,they all have used me fine1 and ,i would never know ,i had been away for no one mentions it4 ,brother1 ,i think of you fifty times a day1 of the unselfish1 never fatiguing interest you manifested in my behalf1 of the hundred and one favors1 and when ,i think that was only a single factor in your work1 ,i cannot but wonder how you stand the strain4 ,cannot tell you how much ,i prize liberty1 and ,i owe having it1 to a great extent1 to your dear self4 ,i assure you your efforts and prayers of yourself and wife for me done wonders4 ,i have fully resolved to be a good man4 ,brother ,herr1 ,i am going to close1 for ,i am going to write to you every few days1 as ,i consider you as dear as an own brother4 ,give my sincere regards to any inquiring friends4 ,my heartiest to your dear wife1 and may ,god bless you both4 ,i do4 ,i am affectionately yours1 ,w4 ,a ,,tribute ,,from ,,jos4 ,m4 ,o',,hara4 ,the success that has attended the efforts of this truly pious and angelic woman in her noble and heroic work of rescuing sinful men and women from the vortex of ruin and perdition is marvelous2 and her labor among the prisoners of the county jail is not less remarkable4 ,mrs4 ,herr1 unlike many religious workers1 realizes that before attempting to moralize with a prisoner1 his confidence must first be gained1 and to accomplish this she invariably succeeds in dispelling that false and erroneous opinion so prevalent among criminals1 that they are held in contempt by society and are considered undeserving of sympathy and assistance2 then1 by kind and encouraging words and gentle deed1 instills1 not by the dry and laborious way of the brain1 but into the heart1 the story of the kind and loving ,saviour4 ,like her contemporary1 ,mrs4 ,ballington ,booth1 ,mrs4 ,herr possesses that divinely urgent and persistent1 yet gentle and sympathetic spirit that can persuade where others cannot convince2 that can subdue where others cannot conquer4 ,the writer of this article through her kind and encouraging words1 has been led from the error of his way1 and to take up again the thread laid down in early years2 has realized that though the fruitage of the tragic and pathetic life that ended in the ignominious death of ,him who was the grandest character1 the most sublime ideal and the highest type of humanity the world has ever seen--,jesus of ,nazareth--we can1 if we come with faith and hope1 be cleansed from our sins and iniquities4 ,may the ,omnipotent ,god1 who holds the destiny of nations1 pour out his blessings upon this saintly woman and her noble hearted husband and guide them through long and honored days1 and when the shadows of even gather and the sun of life is setting1 show them in the darkness of the end1 words of light we never saw by day4 ,,jos4 ,m4 to thank you for your continued1 untiring and unselfish devotion to our interests1 spiritual and temporal4 ,we desire in this manner to show you and the public that we thoroughly appreciate the efforts of those who try to draw us from the broad road of vice and crime into the narrow path of virtue where we are satisfied alone peace and happiness can be found4 ,many persons1 ,bro4 ,herr1 who have attempted the task of rescuing the fallen have become discouraged and given up the work because they could see no good resulting from their efforts4 ,those persons had not the faith to continue their work and leave results with ,god4 ,a prisoner who was an inmate of this jail several years ago recently found himself again an inmate1 and expressed surprise at the changed tone1 as it were1 of the jail1 and he laughingly asked if the world was getting better1 for he said the men now in jail were more refined in their conversation1 more unselfish in their actions toward each other1 and of a higher moral tone generally4 ,what this man said is undoubtedly true1 and it is the result of the efforts of yourself and other ,christian workers who do not become weary in well-doing4 ,but it is you1 ,brother ,herr1 whom we especially desire to thank1 because you are with us daily and no day passes that you do not perform some act of kindness for some one of our number1 who1 but for you1 would have no friend4 ,that perfect man1 ,jesus of ,nazareth1 has said1 by their fruits ye shall know them1 and it is by this standard we as prisoners have measured you and have not found you wanting4 ,you have gained our confidence and we have proved your sincerity and we love you1 ,brother ,herr1 because you daily prove your love for us4 ,prisoners are naturally inclined to suspect the sincerity of those who profess an interest in their welfare1 but when once you gain their confidence they are teachable4 ,a ,london lawyer who wrote the tragedy ,ion makes one of his characters say1 ,it is but a little thing to speak a word of kindness which by daily use has almost lost its sense1 but on the ear of him who thought to die unmourned will fall like sweetest music4 ,many are the words of kindness which daily fall from your lips1 by which we are soothed and blessed1 and we firmly believe that they do not fall upon stony ground and that the good ,god will reward you in his own good time are nearly always more or less poor1 indefinite sort of affairs1 with a questionable lot of reading matter1 mostly paper-backs and second-hand magazines1 forming its contents4 ,but the ,jefferson county jail has marked a departure from the routine of prison life in the establishment of a library station for its inmates4 ,this little institution is a remarkable affair4 ,mrs4 ,chester ,mayer is responsible for its organization4 ,mrs4 ,mayer is a member of the visiting board at the county jail1 and noticing the absence of good reading matter1 the continual idling of prisoners1 she took up the matter with ,jailer ,john ,r4 ,pflanz1 who approved the idea of a library station4 ,then she approached her husband1 ,dr4 ,mayer1 a member of the ,board of ,trustees of the ,louisville ,free ,public ,library4 ,when ,george ,t4 ,settle1 the recently elected librarian1 was approached1 he gave his hearty consent4 ,one hundred volumes were sent immediately for the men's department and fifty for the women prisoners4 ,the books were selected by ,miss ,annie ,v4 ,pollard1 former acting librarian1 who gave considerable time to a study of the most desirable literature4 ,the books sent were non-denominational1 nonpolitical1 and mostly fiction1 works of the popular authors1 but nothing too heavy for the mental appetite of the inmates4 ,the books were taken from the open-shelf room4 ,as these books are used they are changed4 ,since the establishment of the jail library station the circulation has reached #b1jjj books4 ,of course1 the same book is read by nearly all the regular borrowers4 ,an interesting sight is presented when the prisoners are at liberty in the open places at the jail4 ,about #ge per cent4 of the prisoners can read4 ,the other #be per cent4 gather about an appointed reader1 who reads aloud4 ,how much better is this for those unfortunates than idling their time1 brooding1 planning evil deeds1 perhaps1 or thinking criminal thoughts6 ,the ,rev4 ,george ,l4 ,in his story which he gave out last night ,jett freely admits his guilt of the crimes that are charged against him4 ,he added1 when he said that it was a good thing that he had been put in the small revised ,testament and begged me to read it4 ,at first ,i laid it up and would not read it4 ,i don't remember of ever reading a whole chapter in a ,bible up until that time in my whole life2 and at last1 by her begging me in every letter to read my ,testament1 ,i began to read it1 and started out with a resolution to read it through1 and after ,i began to read1 ,i became interested in it1 and the more ,i read it the deeper ,i became interested in it1 and ,god's ,holy ,spirit began to work in me1 and ,i began to pray4 ,at first it seemed that ,i was afraid that ,god would not answer my prayers1 but still something made me pray anyway1 and it wasn't long until ,i was praying to ,god every night from one to three times1 from the depths of my heart4 ,i had taken his name in vain ever since ,i was a child1 and ,i asked him to make me quit taking his name in vain1 and after a day at my work1 and when ,i would curse ,god1 ,i would think of my prayers1 and then at night when ,i would go to my cell1 ,i would let my thoughts wander over a day that had just passed1 and ,i could tell after reflecting that ,i hadn't cursed so much that day4 ,and little by little ,god removed that evil spirit1 cursing1 from me1 until one night when ,i went to my cell and my thoughts wandered over the day that had just passed1 and not an oath had ,i uttered1 and ,i was happier than ever before1 ,i fell on my knees on the hard stone floor1 and thanked ,god for ,his goodness and for removing that swearing away from me4 ,quits ,smoking ,cigarettes4 ,i had smoked cigarettes for at least fifteen goes on4 ,illustration3 ,,henry ,e4 ,,youtsey ,the ,author knows of no man behind prison bars in whom he is more interested than ,henry ,e4 ,youtsey4 ,when ,i commenced my life sentence here1 ,february #fth1 #aija1 ,i fell in love with our ,christian ,endeavor ,society at first sight1 and in all those #ajd months ,i have only missed about #ae meetings1 due to unavoidable causes4 ,i was ill for three months with malaria and could not go at all4 ,during the early days of my imprisonment our membership at its best averaged about #ajj1 but during the summer months when the boys were given their choice between the open air of the yard and attendance at the meetings the average was less than #bj4 ,in the summer of #aije1 and at the instance of ,mrs4 ,m4 ,b4 ,r4 ,day1 of ,frankfort1 ,i organized and managed a memorizing contest in which a number of prisoners learned and recited verses of scripture1 and ,i obtained a number of handsome ,teachers' ,bibles and other presents which were given to them as prizes on ,thanksgiving day4 ,i continued this work for the three following summers1 and in all forty-five prisoners learned and recited a grand total of #cc1ccb verses1 7over four times as many as are contained in the ,new ,testament71 which is an average of #gda verses per man4 ,the men studied so hard that some of them injured their eyes1 and it was thought best to discontinue the work for a while4 ,i was ,corresponding ,secretary of our ,society for about two and one-half years1 and last ,december ,i was elected its ,president by the largest majority ever given any candidate for the office4 ,i started in to raise our membership to two hundred1 and succeeded in getting it as high as one hundred and sixty-six4 ,it was also my desire to have better attendance during the hot months1 and ,i used every means ,i could think of to make our meetings attractive1 and ,i was frequently both pleased and surprised to count from sixty-five to seventy1 more than three times what it used to be4 ,some of our members being delicate are in great need of all the fresh air they can get and remain in the yard all day ,sundays in pretty weather although their hearts are with us4 ,a part of our pledge binds the members to carefully read the ,bible every day1 and ,i wondered how they were going to keep that pledge without the ,bibles1 so ,i set to work again writing letters in every direction1 and almost before ,i knew it our ,ky4 ,c4 ,e4 ,societies sent us #ej ,bibles1 and ,miss ,mary ,b4 ,rohrer1 of ,franklin1 ,pa41 sent me #aej of the prettiest ,bibles you ever saw2 they have flexible1 over-lapping backs1 red-under-gold edges1 maps1 and other helps4 ,this is the most magnificent present we have ever received from outside parties1 and besides all these1 the ,prison ,commissioners offered us #ajj more1 which we could not use4 ,one thing that has impressed me very forcibly is the fact that the ,christian people outside are ready at all times to shower blessings upon us1 and all we have to do is to ask for them4 ,at the suggestion of ,bro4 ,jos4 ,severance1 our splendid ,chaplain1 ,i numbered the ,bibles and gave them out to the members1 keeping a careful record of them1 and the men were instructed to return the ,bibles to the ,society on leaving the prison1 and although about a score of our members have gone out since then we have only lost one ,bible1 which speaks volumes for their honesty4 ,a few ,sundays ago ,i proposed that the ,society set apart a small sum of money for prizes1 and that all the members who wished to do so would be invited to write compositions on the subject1 ,what ,christian ,endeavor has done for me4 ,nine brothers entered this symposium1 and their compositions signed1 ,amo ,rolo1 ,sunflower1 ,rhododendron1 ,laurel1 ,merry ,heart1 ,happy ,bird1 ,mizpah1 and ,christian1 aggregate about #g1ejj words1 and make fine reading2 ,bro4 ,severance was appointed ,judge4 ,this summer ,i organized a little band of workers who go with me to the hospital every ,sunday1 where we hold little services of song1 prayer and ,bible reading at the bedsides of those who are ill1 and ,i have found great joy in this work4 ,we have had some splendid ,c4 ,e4 meetings1 the best ones being those when the ,senior and ,junior societies of the ,frankfort ,christian ,church and the ,epworth ,league of the ,methodist ,church united with us4 ,of course1 we could not go to them1 but they came to us1 and gave us rare spiritual and intellectual treats4 ,the music was specially beautiful4 ,quite recently ,i assisted ,bro4 ,severance in re-organizing a ,bible class1 of which ,i am ,secretary4 ,we are studying ,moninger's ,training for ,service1 and have #eb members4 ,splendid progress is being made4 ,so you see my hands are pretty full1 and when ,sunday night comes ,i am about ready to drop in my tracks4 ,of course1 it is all voluntary1 and ,i do not have to turn my hand over if ,i do not want to4 ,i am going to add a ,soul-winners ,department to our ,c4 ,e4 ,society for the purpose of assisting ,bro4 ,severance in the conversion of the men1 but ,i am in some doubt as to how to proceed as there is no chance to get at the men in the winter time4 ,however1 ,i am determined to find opportunity somehow4 ,we have a new ,superintendent of ,prison ,c4 ,e4 work1 in the person of ,miss ,georgia ,dunn1 of ,marksbury1 ,ky4 ,she is the most energetic little ,christian lady ,i have seen in a long time1 and our society will surely hum this winter under her guidance1 as we are all very proud of our good little sister4 ,january #ast1 ,i commenced to read my ,bible through1 at the rate of three chapters each week night1 and five each ,sunday night1 in order to get through by ,december #cast1 but ,i read more than that and finished up three months ahead of time4 ,although ,i have read the good book constantly during the last eight years1 this is the first continuous reading to completion that ,i ever did4 ,i have enjoyed ,bro4 ,severance's sermons very much and ,i believe there is nothing that thrills and inspires me with enthusiasm like fine preaching1 and right here ,i am going to tell you something which you must keep under your hat2 one ,sunday ,bro4 ,severance was unexpectedly called away1 and asked for a volunteer to fill his place1 and ,i was delighted at the opportunity1 and although ,i could not fill it ,i rattled about in it1 for about #cj minutes1 and one dear fellow accepted the gospel invitation and joined the church4 ,as soon as my sermonette was over quite a number of friends crowded around me and showered congratulations on me4 ,this was a temptation to try again1 and the next time three brothers joined the church1 and that pleased me immensely1 you know4 ,i have many good friends in ,louisville1 including ,dr4 ,powell1 of the ,christian ,church2 ,dr4 ,t4 ,m4 ,hawes1 of the ,highland ,presbyterian ,church1 whose ,c4 ,e4 ,society sent us #g4ej1 and1 say1 there is a that he will get every office that he goes after4 ,be sure and give my kindest regards to your most excellent wife2 she is certainly a queen among women4 ,trusting that ,i have not tired you1 and that you will excuse my remissness in failing to write sooner1 ,i am1 ,most respectfully yours1 ,h4 ,e4 ,,youtsey4 ,capital ,punishment ,the following forceful expressions regarding capital punishment by ,gov4 ,geo4 ,w4 ,hunt1 of ,arizona1 are in exact keeping with the thoughts of the author4 ,thou shalt not kill applies to governments1 corporations1 societies and individuals alike4 ,capital punishment is simply the commission by the ,state of an act which is regarded as a horrible crime if committed by an individual4 ,one man must not kill another man1 but several men vested with official titles can hold a conference and send a soul to eternity4 ,the ,state says3 ,you must not kill2 but if you do1 ,i will kill you4 ,this theory of a ,state's power or duty owes its origin to the lowest class of barbarians in the early history of the world4 ,their logic1 if it may be called that1 sprang solely from a spirit of revenge4 ,the idea that a legal execution would deter others from committing murder probably never occurred to them4 ,their crude minds did not rise above the thought that the victim should be avenged1 and that adequate vengeance could be found only in the hangman's noose or the guillotine4 ,there are a thousand other practices originating with barbarians which the footsteps of civilization and progress have crushed4 ,but capital punishment1 the worst heritage of the dark ages1 lingers with us1 betraying one of the spots in humanity where the veneer of civilization is thin4 ,i am inclined to think that the spirit of revenge still is the ruling motive back of the legal execution1 even though pleas are made in its behalf which barbarians never thought of4 ,they could not very well think of such punishment as a curb to more murders1 for even they could not help seeing that the beheading and quartering of offenders had no such effect4 ,the legal execution has no such effect today1 a fact which any fair-minded man will recognize after proper investigation4 ,and if that plea falls down1 as it does and must continue to do1 what defense of the legal killing of our fellowman is left us8 ,the moment we are convinced that the number of murders is on the increase1 or does not decrease1 in spite of the rope and electric chair1 we will have to justify capital punishment on some other ground4 ,what is that other ground1 if it is not the old savage impulse of meting revenge--a species of revenge1 at the last analysis1 confers no good whatever upon society as a whole1 and is of no consolation or comfort to the family circle most affected by the original murder8 ,arizona has taken most advanced ground upon social and economic questions1 and while the old territorial law1 permitting capital punishment1 is still on the statute books1 it must be remembered that statehood has been in operation less than a year1 and that the first ,state ,legislature was overwhelmed with work during the comparatively short session prescribed by the ,constitution4 ,i am confident that public sentiment in ,arizona is opposed to capital punishment4 ,during the special session of the ,legislature1 which will be held early in #aiac1 an effort will be made to repeal the old law4 ,if the ,legislature is too busy to give the matter attention1 or is disinclined to assume the responsibility1 the initiative provision of the ,state ,constitution will be invoked1 thus putting the question square up to the people4 ,i have no fears for the outcome4 ,arizona citizenship has proved itself too intelligent to lag behind the advanced thought and progress of civilization4 ,,geo4 ,w4 ,h4 ,,hunt1 ,governor of ,arizona4 ,indiana ,reformatory ,inmates ,subscribe for ,pipe ,organ ,each one a ,carnegie in proportion to his ability to give1 a approximated #ijj4 ,when the contribution cards were checked up by the ,rev4 ,w4 ,e4 ,edgin1 chaplain of the reformatory1 he was surprised at the generosity shown by the inmates4 ,the individual sums given ranged from #be cents to #ce4 ,when ,gov4 ,j4 ,frank ,hanly was a guest at the ,reformatory recently he was asked by ,mr4 ,edgin as to the best plan to pursue to get from ,andrew ,carnegie a contribution sufficient to buy a pipe organ4 ,gov4 ,hanly replied that this sum could be raised in ,indiana1 and he started the list with #ajj4 ,it then occurred to ,mr4 ,edgin to ask voluntary contributions from the inmates1 and permission was given by ,supt4 ,whittaker4 ,cards were left in each cell1 with blanks for subscriptions1 but it was distinctly stated that all offerings should be entirely voluntary4 ,a great many of the inmates bring money with them to the ,reformatory1 and this1 with that which they earn by overtime work1 which is considerable1 is credited to them4 ,when the success of the offering was learned the inmates were as much pleased as ,chaplain ,edgin4 ,the new organ soon will be forthcoming4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,program4 ,indiana ,reformatory ,chapel ,services4
