,london a lady who attended our meetings was brought into the house in her carriage1 being unable to walk4 ,at first she was very skeptical2 but one day she said to her servant3 ,take me into the inquiry room4 ,after ,i had talked with her a good while about her soul she said3 ,but you will go back to ,america1 and it will be all over4 ,oh1 no1 said ,i1 it is going to last forever4 ,i couldn't make her believe it4 ,i don't know how many times ,i talked with her4 ,at last ,i used the fable of the pendulum in the clock4 ,the pendulum figured up the thousands of times it would have to tick1 and got discouraged1 and was going to give up4 ,then it thought1 ,it is only a tick at a time1 and went on4 ,so it is in the ,christian life--only one step at a time4 ,that helped this lady very much4 ,she began to see that if she could trust in ,god for a supply of grace for only one day1 she could go right on in the same way from day to day4 ,as soon as she saw this1 she came out quite decided4 ,but she never could get done talking about that pendulum4 ,the servants called her ,lady ,pendulum4 ,she had a pendulum put up in her room to remind her of the illustration1 and when ,i went away from ,london she gave me a clock--,i've got it in my house still4 ,the ,greater ,mystery ,dr4 ,andrew ,bonar once said that1 although it was a mystery to him how sin should have come into the world1 it was still a greater mystery how ,god should have come here to bear the penalty of it ,himself4 ,never ,runs ,dry ,i remember being in a city where ,i noticed that the people resorted to a favorite well in one of the parks4 ,i said to a man one day3 ,does the well never run dry8 ,the man was drinking of the water out of the well2 and as he stopped drinking1 he smacked his lips1 and said3 ,they have never been able to pump it dry yet4 ,they tried it a few years ago4 ,they put the fire-engines to work1 and tried all they could to pump the well dry2 but they found there was a river flowing right under the city4 ,thank ,god1 the well of salvation can never run dry either6 ,he ,trusted his ,father ,a party of gentlemen in ,scotland wanted to get some eggs from a nest on the side of a precipice1 and they tried to persuade a poor boy that lived near to go over and get them1 saying they would hold him by a rope4 ,they offered him a good deal of money2 but they were strangers to him1 and he would not go4 ,they told him they would see that no accident happened to him2 they would hold the rope4 ,at last he said3 ,i will go if my father will hold the rope4 ,he trusted his father4 ,a man will not trust strangers4 ,i want to get acquainted with a man before ,i put my confidence in him4 ,i have known ,god for forty years1 and ,i have more confidence in ,him now than ,i ever had before2 it increases every year4 ,peace ,declared ,when ,france and ,england were at war once a ,french vessel had gone off on a long whaling voyage4 ,when they came back1 the crew were short of water1 and being near an ,english port1 they wanted to get water2 but they were afraid that they would be taken prisoners if they went into that port4 ,some people in the port saw their signal of distress1 and sent word that they need not be afraid1 that the war was over1 and peace had been declared4 ,but they couldn't make those sailors believe it1 and they didn't dare to go into port1 although they were out of water4 ,at last they made up their minds that they had better go in and surrender their cargo and their lives to their enemies rather than perish at sea without water2 and when they got in1 they found out that what had been told them was true1 that peace had been declared4 ,there are a great many people who don't believe the glad tidings that peace has been made by ,jesus ,christ between ,god and man1 but it is true4 ,sawdust or ,bread ,if you go out to your garden and throw down some sawdust1 the birds will not take any notice2 but if you throw down some crumbs1 you will find they will soon sweep down and pick them up4 ,the true child of ,god can tell the difference 7so to speak7 between sawdust and bread4 ,many so-called ,christians are living on the world's sawdust1 instead of being nourished by the ,bread that cometh down from heaven4 ,nothing can satisfy the longings of the soul but the ,word of the living ,god4 ,baby's ,feeding ,himself6 ,you know it is always regarded a great event in the family when a child can feed itself4 ,it is propped up at table1 and at first perhaps it uses the spoon upside down1 but by and by it uses it all right1 and mother1 or perhaps sister1 claps her hands and says3 ,just see1 baby's feeding himself6 ,well1 what we need as ,christians is to be able to feed ourselves4 ,how many there are who sit helpless and listless1 with open mouths1 hungry for spiritual things1 and the minister has to try to feed them1 while the ,bible is a feast prepared1 into which they never venture4 ,should ,not ,be ,postponed ,in #ahga ,i preached a series of sermons on the life of ,christ in old ,farwell hall1 ,chicago1 for five nights4 ,i took ,him from the cradle and followed ,him up to the judgment hall1 and on that occasion ,i consider ,i made as great a blunder as ever ,i made in my life4 ,it was upon that memorable night in ,october1 and the court-house bell was sounding an alarm of fire1 but ,i paid no attention to it4 ,you know we were accustomed to hear the fire-bell often1 and it didn't disturb us much when it sounded4 ,i finished the sermon upon ,what ,shall ,i ,do with ,jesus8 and said to the audience3 ,now1 ,i want you to take the question with you and think it over1 and next ,sunday ,i want you to come back and tell me what you are going to do with ,him4 ,what a mistake6 ,it seems now as if ,satan was in my mind when ,i said this4 ,since then ,i never have dared give an audience a week to think of their salvation4 ,if they were lost1 they might rise up in judgment against me4 ,now is the accepted time4 ,i remember ,mr4 ,sankey singing1 and how his voice rang when he came to that pleading verse3 ,to-day the ,savior calls1 ,for refuge fly6 ,the storm of ,justice falls1 ,and death is nigh6 ,after the meeting we went home4 ,i remember going down ,la ,salle street with a young man1 and saw the glare of flames4 ,i said to the young man3 ,this means ruin to ,chicago4 ,about one o'clock ,farwell hall was burned2 soon the church in which ,i had preached went down1 and everything was scattered4 ,i never saw that audience again4 ,my friends1 we don't know what may happen to-morrow1 but there is one thing ,i do know1 and that is1 if you take the gift of ,god you are saved4 ,if you have eternal life you need not fear fire1 death1 or sickness4 ,let disease or death come1 you can shout triumphantly over the grave if you have ,christ4 ,my friends1 what are you going to do with ,him8 ,will you not decide now8 ,teaching ,willie ,faith ,some years ago ,i wanted to teach my boy what faith was and so ,i put him on a table4 ,he was a little fellow about two years old4 ,i stood back three or four feet1 and said4 ,willie1 jump4 ,the little fellow said1 ,papa1 ,i'se afraid4 ,i said3 ,willie1 ,i will catch you4 ,just look right at me1 and jump4 ,the little fellow got all ready to jump1 and then looked down again1 and said1 ,i'se afraid4 ,willie1 didn't ,i tell you ,i would catch you8 ,will papa deceive you8 ,now1 ,willie1 look me right in the eye1 and jump1 and ,i will catch you4 ,the little fellow got all ready the third time to jump1 but he looked on the floor1 and said3 ,i'se afraid4 ,didn't ,i tell you ,i would catch you8 ,yes4 ,at last ,i said3 ,willie1 don't take your eyes off me2 and ,i held the little fellow's eyes1 and said1 ,now1 jump2 don't look at the floor2 and he leaped into my arms4 ,then he said to me1 ,let me jump again4 ,i put him back1 and the moment he got on the table he jumped1 and after that1 when he was on the table and ,i was standing five or six feet away ,i heard him cry1 ,papa1 ,i'se coming1 and had just time to rush and catch him4 ,he seemed to put too much confidence in me4 ,but you cannot put too much confidence in ,god4 ,act on ,your ,belief ,when ,president ,lincoln signed the proclamation of emancipation1 copies of it were sent to all points along the ,northern line1 where they were posted4 ,now1 supposing a slave should have seen a copy of that proclamation and should have learned its contents4 ,he might have known the fact1 he might have assented to its justice1 but if he had still continued to serve his old master as a slave his faith in the document would not have amounted to anything4 ,and so it is with us4 ,a mere knowledge of the historical events of ,christ's life1 or a simple intellectual assent to ,his teachings and ,his mission1 will be of no help in a man's life unless he adds to them a trustful surrender to the ,lord's loving kindness4 ,forty ,miles to ,liberty ,a friend of mine went to teach in ,natchez before the war4 ,he and a friend of his went out riding one ,saturday in the country4 ,they saw an old slave coming1 and they thought they would have a little fun4 ,they had just come to a place where there was a fork in the road1 and there was a sign-post which read1 ,forty miles to ,liberty4 ,sambo1 how old are you8 ,i don't know1 massa4 ,i guess ,i'se about eighty4 ,can you read8 ,no1 sah2 we don't read in dis country4 ,it's agin the law4 ,can you tell what is on that sign-post8 ,yes1 sah2 it says forty miles to ,liberty4 ,well1 now1 said my friend1 why don't you follow that road and get your liberty8 ,it says there1 only 'forty miles to ,liberty4' ,now1 why don't you take that road and go there8 ,the old man's countenance changed1 and he said3 ,that ar's a sham1 young massa1 but if it pointed up thar1 and he raised his trembling hand toward heaven1 to the liberty wherewith ,christ makes us free1 that ar wouldn't be no sham4 ,the old slave1 with all his ignorance1 had even then experienced a liberty in his own soul that these young men1 with all their boasted education1 at that time knew nothing of4 ,the ,most ,important ,thing ,a certain ,john ,bacon1 once a famous sculptor1 left an inscription to be placed on his tomb in ,westminster ,abbey3 ,what ,i was as an artist seemed of some importance to me while ,i lived2 but what ,i was as a believer in ,jesus ,christ is the only thing of importance to me now4 ,taking the ,wrong ,boat ,a ,methodist minister1 on his way to a camp-meeting1 through some mistake took passage on the wrong boat4 ,he found that instead of being bound for a religious gathering1 he was on his way to a horse-race4 ,his fellow-passengers were betting and discussing the events1 and the whole atmosphere was foreign to his nature4 ,he besought the captain that he would stop his boat and let him off at the first landing1 as the surroundings were so distasteful to him4 ,the story also goes on to relate how1 on the same occasion a sporting man1 intending to go to the races1 by some mistake found himself on the wrong boat1 bound for the camp-meeting4 ,the conversation about him was no more intelligible to him than to the man in the first instance1 and he1 too1 besought the captain to stop and let him off the boat4 ,now what was true in these two cases is practically true with every one4 ,a true ,christian is wretched where there is no fellowship1 and an unregenerate man is not at ease where there are only ,christians4 ,a man's future will be according to what he is here prepared for4 ,if he is not regenerate1 heaven will have no attractions for him4 ,heaven is a prepared place for a prepared people4 ,the ,best ,proof ,the highest proof of the infallibility of ,scripture1 said the late ,a4 ,j4 ,gordon1 is the practical one that we have proved it so4 ,as the coin of the realm has always been found to buy the amount of its face-value1 so the prophecies and promises of ,scripture have yielded their face value to those who have taken the pains to prove them4 ,if they have not always done so1 it is probable that they have not yet matured4 ,there are multitudes of ,christians who have so far proved the veracity of the ,bible that they are ready to trust it without reserve in all that it pledges for the world yet unseen and the life yet unrealized4 ,have ,faith4 ,i remember a man telling me he preached for a number of years without any result4 ,he used to say to his wife as they went to church that he knew the people would not believe anything he said2 and there was no blessing4 ,at last he saw his error2 he asked ,god to help him1 and took courage1 and then the blessing came4 ,according to your faith it shall be unto you4 ,this man had expected nothing and he got just what he expected4 ,dear friends1 let us expect that ,god is going to use us4 ,let us have courage and go forward1 looking to ,god to do great things4 ,chasing ,his ,shadow ,when ,i was a little boy ,i tried to catch my shadow4 ,i don't know if you were ever so foolish2 but ,i remember running after it1 and trying to get ahead of it4 ,i could not see why the shadow always kept ahead of me4 ,once ,i happened to be racing with my face to the sun1 and ,i looked over my head and saw my shadow behind me1 and it kept behind me all the way4 ,it is the same with the ,sun of ,righteousness4 ,peace and joy will go with you while you go with your face toward ,him1 but those who turn their backs on the ,sun are in darkness all the time4 ,turn to the light of ,god1 and the reflection will flash in your heart4 ,his ,minister's ,bible ,if ,i have a right to cut out a certain portion of the ,bible1 ,i don't know why one of my friends has not a right to cut out another1 and another friend to cut out another part1 and so on4 ,you would have a queer kind of ,bible if everybody cut out what he wanted to6 ,every adulterer would cut out everything about adultery2 every liar would cut out everything about lying2 every drunkard would be cutting out what he didn't like4 ,once a gentleman took his ,bible around to his minister1 and said1 ,that is your ,bible4 ,why do you call it my ,bible8 said the minister4 ,well1 replied the gentleman1 ,i have been sitting under your preaching for five years1 and when you said that a thing in the ,bible was not authentic1 ,i cut it out4 ,he had about a third of the ,bible cut out2 all of ,job1 all of ,ecclesiastes and ,revelation1 and a good deal besides4 ,the minister wanted him to leave the ,bible with him2 he didn't want the rest of his congregation to see it4 ,but the man said3 ,oh1 no6 ,i have the covers left1 and ,i will hold on to them4 ,and off he went holding on to the covers4 ,mocked by his ,children ,when ,i was in ,st4 ,louis some years ago1 there was an old man who had been away off on the mountains of an ungodly life1 but in his early manhood he had known ,christ4 ,he came into the inquiry-room1 literally broken down4 ,about midnight that old man came trembling before ,god and was saved4 ,he wiped away his tears1 and started home4 ,next night ,i saw him in the audience with a terrible look in his face4 ,as soon as ,i finished preaching1 ,i went to him and said3 ,my good friend1 you haven't gone back into darkness again8 ,said he3 ,oh1 ,mr4 ,moody1 it has been the most wretched day in my life4 ,why so8 ,well1 this morning as soon as ,i got my breakfast1 ,i started out4 ,i have a number of children1 married1 and in this city1 and they have families2 and ,i have spent the day going around and telling them what ,god has done for me4 ,i told them how ,i had tasted salvation1 with the tears trickling down my face2 and1 ,mr4 ,moody1 ,i hadn't a child that didn't mock me6 ,that made me think of ,lot down in ,sodom4 ,it is an awful thing for a man who has been a backslider to have his children mock him4 ,but it is written3 ,thy back-slidings shall reprove thee2 know1 therefore1 and see that it is an evil thing and bitter that thou hast forsaken the ,lord thy ,god4 ,no ,need to ,read ,them ,a great many people say1 you must hear both sides2 but if a man should write me a most slanderous letter about my wife1 ,i don't think ,i would have to read it2 ,i should tear it up and throw it to the winds4 ,have ,i to read all the infidel books that are written1 to hear both sides8 ,have ,i to take up a book that is a slander on my ,lord and ,master1 who has redeemed me with ,his blood8 ,ten thousand times no6 ,i will not touch it4 ,tolling the ,bell ,i well remember how in my native village in ,new ,england it used to be customary1 as a funeral procession left the church1 for the bell to toll as many times as the deceased was years old4 ,how anxiously ,i would count those strokes of the bell to see how long ,i might reckon on living6 ,sometimes there would be seventy or eighty tolls1 and ,i would give a sigh of relief to think ,i had so many years to live4 ,but at other times there would be only a few years tolled1 and then a horror would seize me as ,i thought that ,i1 too1 might soon be claimed as a victim by that dread monster1 ,death4 ,death and judgment were a constant source of fear to me till ,i realized the fact that neither shall ever have any hold on a child of ,god4 ,in his letter to the ,romans the apostle ,paul has showed1 in most direct language1 that there is no condemnation for a child of ,god1 but that he is passed from under the power of law1 and in the ,epistle to the ,corinthians he tells us that there is a natural body1 and there is a spiritual body1 and as we have borne the image of the earthy1 we shall also bear the image of the heavenly4 ,a ,father's ,neglect ,a story has gone the round of the ,american press that made a great impression upon me as a father4 ,a father took his little child out into the field one ,sabbath1 and1 it being a hot day1 lie lay down under a beautiful shady tree4 ,the little child ran about gathering wild flowers and little blades of grass1 and coming to its father and saying3 ,pretty6 pretty6 ,at last the father fell asleep1 and while he was sleeping the little child wandered away4 ,when he awoke1 his first thought was3 ,where is my child8 ,he looked all around1 but he could not see him4 ,he shouted at the top of his voice1 but all he heard was the echo4 ,running to a little hill1 he looked around and shouted again4 ,no response6 ,then going to a precipice at some distance1 he looked down1 and there1 upon the rocks and briars1 he saw the mangled form of his loved child4 ,he rushed to the spot1 took up the lifeless corpse1 and hugged it to his bosom1 and accused himself of being the murderer of his child4 ,while he was sleeping his child had wandered over the precipice4 ,i thought as ,i read that1 what a picture of the church of ,god6 ,how many fathers and mothers1 how many ,christian men and women1 are sleeping now while their children wander over the terrible precipice right into the bottomless pit6 ,father1 mother1 where is your boy to-night8 ,worth ,ten ,thousand ,men ,let us not give heed to gloomy and discouraging remarks4 ,in the name of our great ,commander let us march on to battle and to victory4 ,there are some generals whose name alone is worth more than a whole army of ten thousand men4 ,in our army in the ,civil ,war there were some whose presence sent a cheer all along the line4 ,as they passed on1 cheer upon cheer went up4 ,the men knew who was going to lead them1 and they were sure of having success4 ,the boys liked to fight under such generals as that4 ,let us encourage ourselves in the ,lord1 and encourage each other2 then we shall have good success4 ,with or ,without ,power ,doctor ,gordon of ,boston used to say that as you passed along ,washington street of that city1 or ,broadway1 ,new ,york1 you might see stores with the card in the window1 ,to rent1 with or without power1 and any one could rent the store1 and by paying something extra could have power furnished from the engine in the rear4 ,doctor ,gordon thought it would be a good thing to ask men and women when they joined the church if they wanted to be a member on the with power or the without power basis1 and if the latter1 to tell them there were no vacancies for that kind in the church1 it already had too many members without power4 ,turning on the ,tap ,a man who lived on the bank of ,lake ,erie had water pipes laid to his house from the lake2 and when he wanted water all he had to do was to turn the tap and the water flowed in4 ,if the government had presented him with the lake he would not have known what to do with it4 ,so we may say that if ,god were to give us grace enough for a lifetime1 we should not know how to use it4 ,he has given us the privilege of drawing on ,him day by day--not forty days after sight4 ,there is plenty of grace in the bank of heaven2 we need not be afraid of its becoming exhausted4 ,keep ,close6 ,the late ,dr4 ,andrew ,bonar once remarked in his own quaint fashion that it was always easy to trace the footprints of a person if we walked close behind him1 but if we were some distance back we might fail to find them2 and accordingly1 if we followed close after the ,master we would easily see the way1 but if we tried to follow afar off we would find it difficult to know the path of ,his will4 ,on ,both ,knees ,william ,dawson once told this story to illustrate how humble the soul must be before it can find peace4 ,he said that at a revival meeting a little lad who was used to ,methodist ways1 went home to his mother and said3 ,mother1 ,john ,so-and-so is under conviction and seeking for peace1 but he will not find it to-night1 mother4 ,why1 ,william8 said she4 ,because he is only down on one knee1 mother1 and he will never get peace until he is down on both knees4 ,until conviction of sin brings us down on both knees1 until we are completely humbled1 until we have no hope in ourselves left1 we cannot find the ,savior4 ,something ,new ,a great many people seem to think that the ,bible is out of date1 that it is an old book1 that it has passed its day4 ,they say it was very good for the dark ages1 and that there is some very good history in it1 but it was not intended for the present time2 we are living in a very enlightened age and men can get on very well without it2 we have outgrown it4 ,now1 you might just as well say that the sun1 which has shone so long1 is now so old that it is out of date1 and that whenever a man builds a house he need not put any windows in it1 because we have a newer light and a better light2 we have gaslight and electric light4 ,these are something new2 and ,i would advise people1 if they think the ,bible is too old and worn out1 when they build houses1 not to put windows in them1 but just to light them with electric light2 that is something new and that is what they are anxious for4 ,bidding ,christ ,farewell ,a rule ,i have had for years is to treat the ,lord ,jesus ,christ as a personal friend4 ,it is not a creed1 a mere empty doctrine1 but it is ,christ ,himself we have4 ,the moment we receive ,christ we should receive ,him as a friend4 ,when ,i go away from home ,i bid my wife and children good-bye2 ,i bid my friends and acquaintances good-bye2 but ,i never heard of a poor backslider going down on his knees and saying3 ,i have been near ,you for ten years4 ,your service has become tedious and monotonous4 ,i have come to bid ,you farewell4 ,good-bye1 ,lord ,jesus ,christ6 ,i never heard of one doing this4 ,i will tell you how they go away2 they just run away4 ,any ,one ,can ,believe ,god has put the offer of salvation in such a way that the whole world can lay hold of it4 ,all men can believe4 ,a lame man might not perhaps be able to visit the sick2 but he can believe4 ,a blind man1 by reason of his infirmity1 cannot do many things2 but he can believe4 ,a deaf man can believe4 ,a dying man can believe4 ,god has put salvation so simply that young and old1 wise and foolish1 rich and poor1 can all believe if they will4 ,the ,wrath of ,god ,was on ,him ,i heard of a rich man who was asked to make a contribution on behalf of some charitable object4 ,the text was quoted to him--,he that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the ,lord2 and that which he hath given will ,he pay him again1 ,he said that the security might be good enough1 but the credit was too long4 ,he was dead within two weeks4 ,the ,war was ,ended ,during the last days of the ,civil ,war1 when many men were deserting the ,southern flag1 ,secretary ,stanton sent out a notice from the war department that no more refugees should be taken into the ,union army4 ,a ,southern soldier who had not seen that order came into the ,union lines1 and they read it to him4 ,he didn't know what to do4 ,if he went back into the ,southern army he would be shot as a deserter1 and the ,northern army wouldn't have him4 ,so he went into the woods1 and stayed there1 living on roots and whatever else he could get1 until finally he was starving4 ,one day he saw an officer riding by4 ,he rushed out of the woods1 caught the horse's bridle1 and said he would kill the officer if he didn't help him4 ,the officer asked what was the trouble1 and he told him4 ,but haven't you heard the news8 said the officer4 ,no2 what news8 ,why1 the war is over6 ,lee has surrendered1 and peace has been declared4 ,go to the nearest town and get all the food you want4 ,the man waved his hat1 and went off as fast as he could4 ,i want to say that peace has been declared between ,god and man4 ,be reconciled to ,god4 ,the blood is on the mercy-seat1 and the vilest sinner can be saved for time and eternity4 ,nearer than he ,thought ,i was reading1 some time ago1 of a young man who had just come out of a saloon1 and had mounted his horse4 ,as a certain deacon passed on his way to church1 he followed and said3 ,deacon1 can you tell me how far it is to hell8 ,the deacon's heart was pained to think that a young man like that should talk so lightly2 but he passed on and said nothing4 ,when he came round the corner to the church1 he found that the horse had thrown that young man1 and he was dead4 ,you1 too1 may be nearer the judgment than you think4 ,its ,strength was ,underestimated ,some of the older people can remember when our ,civil ,war broke out4 ,secretary ,seward1 who was ,lincoln's ,secretary of ,state--a long-headed and shrewd politician--prophesied that the war would be over in ninety days2 and young men in thousands and hundreds of thousands came forward and volunteered to go down to ,dixie and whip the ,south4 ,they thought they would be back in ninety days2 but the war lasted four years1 and cost about half a million of lives4 ,what was the matter8 ,why1 the ,south was a good deal stronger than the ,north supposed4 ,its strength was underestimated4 ,jesus ,christ makes no mistake of that kind4 ,when ,he enlists a man in ,his service1 ,he shows him the dark side2 ,he lets him know that he must live a life of self-denial4 ,if a man is not willing to go to heaven by the way of ,calvary1 he cannot go at all4 ,many men want a religion in which there is no cross1 but they cannot enter heaven that way4 ,if we are to be disciples of ,jesus ,christ1 we must deny ourselves and take up our cross and follow ,him4 ,so let us sit down and count the cost4 ,do not think that you will have no battles if you follow the ,nazarene1 because many battles are before you4 ,yet if ,i had ten thousand lives1 ,jesus ,christ should have every one of them4 ,men do not object to a battle if they are confident that they will have victory1 and1 thank ,god1 every one of us may have the victory if we will4 ,seeing the ,gospel ,have you ever heard the ,gospel8 asked a missionary of a ,chinaman1 whom he had not seen in his mission before4 ,no1 he replied1 but ,i have seen it4 ,i know a man who used to be the terror of his neighborhood4 ,he was a bad opium smoker and dangerous as a wild beast2 but he became wholly changed4 ,he is now gentle and good and has left off opium4 ,illuminated ,christians ,we see very few illuminated ,christians now4 ,if every one of us was illuminated by the ,spirit of ,god1 how we could light up the churches6 ,but to have a lantern without any light1 that would be a nuisance4 ,many ,christians carry along lanterns and say1 ,i wouldn't give up my religion for yours4 ,they talk about religion4 ,the religion that has no fire is like painted fire4 ,they are artificial ,christians4 ,do you belong to that class8 ,you can tell4 ,if you can't1 your friends can4 ,there is a fable of an old lantern in a shed1 which began to boast because it had heard its master say he didn't know what he would ever do without it4 ,but the little candle within spoke up and said3 ,yes1 you'd be a great comfort if it wasn't for me6 ,you are nothing2 ,i'm the one that gives the light4 ,we are nothing1 but ,christ is everything1 and what we want is to keep in communion with ,him and let ,christ dwell in us richly and shine forth through us4 ,i have a match box with a phosphorescent front4 ,it draws in the rays of the sun during the day and then throws them out in the dead hours of the night1 so that ,i can always see it in the dark4 ,now1 that is what we ought to be1 constantly drawing in the rays of the ,sun of ,righteousness and then giving them out4 ,some one said to some young converts1 ,it is all moonshine being converted4 ,they replied1 ,thank you for the compliment4 ,the moon borrows light from the sun1 and so we borrow ours from the ,sun of ,righteousness4 ,that is what takes place when we have this illumination4 ,not ,ashamed of his ,lord ,a young convert tried to preach in the open air2 he could not preach very well either1 but he did the best he could4 ,some one interrupted him and said3 ,young man1 you cannot preach2 you ought to be ashamed of yourself4 ,said the young man1 ,so ,i am1 but ,i am not ashamed of my ,lord4 ,that is right4 ,do not be ashamed of ,christ--of the ,man that bought us with ,his own blood4 ,he ,silenced the ,devil ,if you find yourself getting very miserly1 begin to scatter1 like a wealthy farmer in ,new ,york state ,i heard of4 ,he was a noted miser1 but he was converted4 ,soon after1 a poor man who had been burned out and had no provisions came to him for help4 ,the farmer thought he would be liberal and give the man a ham from his smoke-house4 ,on his way to get it1 the tempter whispered to him3 ,give him the smallest one you have4 ,he had a struggle whether he would give a large or a small ham1 but finally he took down the largest he could find4 ,you are a fool1 the devil said4 ,if you don't keep still1 the farmer replied1 ,i will give him every ham ,i have in the smoke-house4 ,warm the ,wax6 ,a gentleman in ,ireland had a seal made for me4 ,d4,l4,m4 is on one side1 and on the other1 ,god is love4 ,if ,i want to stamp ,god is love ,i would not make much headway if the wax was hard and cold4 ,many people go to meetings1 and it is as hard to make an impression on them as in pressing a seal on hard wax4 ,but let the wax be warmed up and an impression is made4 ,if we are willing1 every one of us may be sealed for the day of redemption4 ,in whom ye also trusted after that ye heard the ,word of ,truth1 the ,gospel of your salvation2 in whom also after that ye believed1 ye were sealed with that ,holy ,spirit of promise4 ,draw ,nearer ,when ,i was a boy my mother used to send me out doors to get a birch stick to whip me with1 when ,i had to be punished4 ,at first ,i used to stand off from the rod as far as ,i could4 ,but ,i soon found that the whipping hurt me more that way than any other2 and so ,i went as near to my mother as ,i could1 and found she could not strike me so hard4 ,and so when ,god chastens us let us kiss the rod and draw as near to ,him as we can4 ,the ,panorama ,looks ,brighter ,when a panorama is to pass before an audience1 the artist darkens the room in which they sit1 so that the picture may be more fully seen4 ,so ,god sometimes darkens our place on earth1 puts out this light and that1 and then before our souls ,he makes to pass the splendors and glories of the better land4 ,all ,things ,work for ,good ,there is one passage of ,scripture which has always been a great comfort to me4 ,in the eighth chapter of ,romans ,paul says3 ,all things work together for good to them that love ,god4 ,some years ago a child of mine had scarlet fever4 ,i went to the druggist's to get the medicine1 which the doctor had ordered1 and told him to be sure and be very careful in making up the prescription4 ,the druggist took down one bottle after another1 in any one of which there might be what would be rank poison for my child2 but he stirred them together and mixed them up1 and made just the medicine which my child needed4 ,and so ,god gives us a little adversity here1 a little prosperity there1 and all works for our good4 ,it ,takes ,time ,suppose ,i should send my little boy1 five years old1 to school to-morrow morning1 and when he came home in the afternoon1 say to him3 ,willie1 can you read8 can you write8 can you spell8 ,do you understand all about algebra1 geometry1 ,hebrew1 ,latin and ,greek8 ,why1 papa1 the little fellow would say1 how funny you talk4 ,i have been all day trying to learn the ,a1 ,b1 ,c's6 ,suppose ,i should reply3 ,if you have not finished your education1 you need not go any more4 ,what would you say8 ,why1 you would say ,i had gone mad6 ,there would be just as much reason in that as in the way that people talk about the ,bible4 ,the men who have studied the ,bible for fifty years have never got down to the depths of it yet4 ,there are truths there that the church of ,god has been searching out for the last nineteen hundred years1 but no man has yet fathomed the depths of the ever-living stream4 ,something ,god ,cannot ,do ,in ,ireland1 some time ago1 a teacher asked a little boy if there was anything that ,god could not do4 ,the little fellow said3 ,yes1 ,he cannot see my sins through the blood of ,christ4 ,it ,seemed ,too ,good to be ,true ,some time ago ,i read in one of the daily papers a thing that pleased me very much4 ,when the new administration of ,president ,mc,kinley went into office some clerks in one of the departments were promoted4 ,one young lady was offered a promotion1 but she went to see the secretary1 ,general ,butterworth1 and said that there was a girl sitting next to her that had a family to support4 ,a brother who had been supporting the family had died1 or sickened1 and it had fallen upon her1 and she asked the general to let her friend that sat next to her have the promotion in her place4 ,the general said that he had heard of such things in other generations1 but he didn't know that it would ever happen in his generation4 ,he was amazed to find a person on duty in ,washington that was willing to give up her position and take a lower one1 and let some one else have it that she might be able to help her family4 ,in ,colorado the superintendent of some works told me of a miner that was promoted1 who came to the superintendent1 and said3 ,there is a man that has seven children1 and ,i have only three1 and he is having a hard struggle4 ,don't promote me1 but promote him4 ,i know of nothing that speaks louder for ,christ and ,christianity than to see a man or woman giving up what you call your rights for others1 and in honor preferring one another4 ,the ,scarlet ,thread ,in the ,british ,navy there is said to be a scarlet thread running through every line of cordage1 and though a rope be cut into inch pieces it can be recognized as belonging to the government4 ,so there is a scarlet thread running all through the ,bible--the whole book points to ,christ4 ,the ,first ,don't ,worry ,club ,mrs4 ,sangster says that we hear a good deal in this age1 as if it were a novelty1 about the futility of being anxious1 and people have established ,don't ,worry ,clubs4 ,but the first ,don't ,worry ,club was begun by our blessed ,lord ,himself when ,he said3 ,take no thought for the morrow1 for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself4 ,sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof4 ,he bade us consider the lilies growing in their beauty and purity without a thought1 and taught us the true way of living without care1 without solicitude1 bearing all burdens lightly1 and having continual joy on our faces4 ,only those who have the indwelling ,christ in their hearts can walk through this world with bright and glad looks1 because they know that1 let come what may1 their ,father is leading them safely4 ,the ,story ,followed ,him ,while ,i was at a convention in ,illinois an old man past seventy years1 got up1 and said he remembered but one thing about his father1 and that one thing followed him all through life4 ,he could not remember his death1 he had no recollection of his funeral1 but he recollected his father one winter night taking a little chip1 and with his pocket-knife whittling out a little cross1 and with the tears in his eyes he held up that cross1 telling how ,god in ,his infinite love sent ,his ,son down here to redeem us1 and how ,he had died on the cross for us4 ,the story of the cross followed him through life2 and if we tell children these truths1 they will never forget them4 ,the ,fatal ,sleep ,some time ago a vessel had been off on a whaling voyage1 and had been gone about three years4 ,the father of one of the sailors had charge of the light-house1 and he was expecting his boy to come home4 ,it was time for the whaling-vessel to return4 ,one night there came up a terrible gale4 ,this father fell asleep1 and while he slept his light went out4 ,when he awoke he looked toward the shore and saw a vessel had been wrecked4 ,he at once went to see if he could not yet save some one who might be still alive4 ,the first body that came floating toward the shore was1 to his great grief and surprise1 the body of his own boy6 ,he had been watching for that boy for many days4 ,now the boy had at last come in sight of home1 and had perished because his father had let his light go out6 ,i thought1 what an illustration of fathers and mothers to-day that have let their lights go out6 ,you are not training your children for ,god and eternity4 ,you do not live as though there were anything beyond this life at all4 ,you keep your affections set upon things on the earth instead of on things above1 and the result is that the children do not believe there is anything in ,christianity4 ,perhaps the very next step they take may take them into eternity2 the next day they may die without ,god and without hope4 ,that ,love is ,spontaneous ,some time ago1 in an inquiry meeting1 ,i said to a young miss who said that she could not love ,god1 that it was very hard for her to love ,him3 ,is it hard for you to love your mother8 ,do you have to learn to love your mother8 ,she looked up through her tears1 and said1 ,no2 ,i can't help it2 that is spontaneous4 ,well1 ,i said1 when the ,holy ,spirit kindles love in your heart1 you can not help loving ,god2 it will be spontaneous4 ,when the ,spirit of ,god comes into your heart and mine1 it will be easy to love and serve ,god4 ,the ,summing ,up of ,his ,life ,a man was taken into one of our insane asylums a few years ago from one of the ,western cities4 ,he had resolved to be rich4 ,how he turned every stone to accumulate wealth6 ,all his energy and every faculty were pushed toward that one end4 ,wealth1 wealth1 wealth6 money1 money1 money6 was his cry4 ,at last it drove him mad1 and they took him to the mad-house1 where he threw himself into a rocking-chair1 and cried3 ,millions of money1 and in a mad-house6 ,that was all there was of his life4 ,pretty short1 wasn't it8 ,sixty years gone1 millions of money1 and in a mad-house2 and he died there4 ,that was the summing up of his life4 ,beautiful ,motion but ,no ,progress ,many people are working and working1 as ,rowland ,hill said1 like children on a rocking-horse--it is a beautiful motion1 but there is no progress4 ,those who are working for salvation are like men on a treadmill1 going round and round and round2 toiling and toiling and toiling2 but nothing comes of it all4 ,there is no progress1 and there cannot be until you have the motive power within1 till the breath of life comes from ,god1 which can alone give you power to work for others4 ,get ,it into ,your ,heart ,thy word have ,i hid in my heart that ,i might not sin against thee4 ,an old ,scotchman says3 ,it is a good thing in a good place for a good purpose4 ,many people have the ,bible in their heads1 or in their pockets2 but we need to get it down into our hearts4 ,how the ,miners were ,saved ,in the north of ,england they have been digging the coal for a century4 ,they have gone miles and miles away from the shaft1 under the sea1 and there is danger of men getting lost4 ,i heard of two old miners who lost their way4 ,their lights went out1 and they were in danger of losing their lives4 ,after wandering around for a long time1 they sat down1 and one of them said3 ,let us sit perfectly quiet1 and see if we cannot feel which way the air is moving1 because it always moves toward the shaft4 ,there they sat for a long time1 when all at once one of them felt a slight touch on his cheek1 and he sprang to his feet and said3 ,i felt it4 ,they went in the direction in which the air was moving1 and reached the shaft4 ,sometimes there comes a little breath from ,god that touches our souls4 ,it may be so gentle and faint that you barely recognize it2 but if you do1 do not disregard it4 ,thank ,god that ,he has spoken to you1 and praise ,him for it1 and whatever may come do not go in the opposite direction4 ,give yourself up to be led by it1 and you will come out of darkness1 out of bondage1 out of sorrow1 into perpetual light and joy4 ,receiving and ,never ,giving ,what makes the ,dead ,sea dead8 ,because it is all the time receiving1 never giving out anything4 ,why is it that many ,christians are cold8 ,because they are all the time receiving1 never giving out anything4 ,dumb ,christians ,it is a very sad thing that so many of ,god's children are dumb2 yet it is true4 ,parents would think it a great calamity to have their children born dumb2 they would mourn over it1 and weep2 and well they might2 but did you ever think of the many dumb children ,god has8 ,the churches are full of them2 they never speak for ,christ4 ,they can talk about politics1 art1 and science2 they can speak well enough and fast enough about the fashions of the day2 but they have no voice for the ,son of ,god4 ,like ,siamese ,twins ,covetousness and stealing are almost like ,siamese twins--they go together so often4 ,in fact we might add lying1 and make them triplets1 ,the covetous person is a thief in the shell4 ,the thief is a covetous person out of the shell4 ,let a covetous person see something that he desires very much2 let an opportunity of taking it be offered2 how very soon he will break through the shell and come out in his true character as a thief4 ,the ,greek word translated covetousness means--an inordinate desire of getting4 ,when the ,gauls tasted the sweet wines of ,italy1 they asked where they came from1 and never rested until they had overrun ,italy4 ,not ,troubled with ,doubts ,one of the happiest men ,i ever knew was a man in ,dundee1 ,scotland1 who had fallen and broken his back when he was a boy of fifteen4 ,he had lain on his bed for about forty years1 and could not be moved without a good deal of pain4 ,probably not a day had passed in all those years without acute suffering4 ,but day after day the grace of ,god had been granted to him1 and when ,i was in his chamber it seemed as if ,i was as near heaven as ,i could get on earth4 ,i can imagine that when the angels passed over ,dundee1 they had to stop there to get refreshed4 ,when ,i saw him1 ,i thought he must be beyond the reach of the tempter1 and ,i asked him3 ,doesn't ,satan ever tempt you to doubt ,god1 and to think that ,he is a hard ,master8 ,oh1 yes1 he said1 he does try to tempt me4 ,i lie here and see my old schoolmates driving along in their carriages1 and ,satan says3 ',if ,god is so good1 why does ,he keep you here all these years8 ,you might have been a rich man1 riding in your own carriage4' ,then ,i see a man who was young when ,i was walk by in perfect health1 and ,satan whispers3 ',if ,god loved you1 couldn't ,he have kept you from breaking your back8' ,what do you do when ,satan tempts you8 ,ah1 ,i just take him to ,calvary1 and ,i show him ,christ1 and ,i point out those wounds in ,his hands and feet and side1 and say1 ',doesn't ,he love me8' and the fact is1 he got such a scare there eighteen hundred years ago that he cannot stand it2 he leaves me every time4 ,that bedridden saint had not much trouble with doubts2 he was too full of the grace of ,god4 ,honey-,dew ,i have sometimes been in a place where the very air seemed to be charged with the breath of ,god1 like the moisture in the air4 ,i remember one time as ,i went through the woods near ,mount ,hermon school ,i heard bees1 and asked what it meant4 ,oh1 said one of the men1 they are after the honey-dew4 ,what is that8 ,i asked4 ,he took a chestnut leaf and told me to put my tongue to it4 ,i did so1 and the taste was sweet as honey4 ,upon inquiry ,i found that all up and down the ,connecticut valley what they call honey-dew had fallen1 so that there must have been altogether hundreds of tons of honey-dew in this region4 ,where it comes from ,i don't know4 ,do you suppose that this earth would be worth living on if it were not for the dew and the rain8 ,so a church that hasn't any of the dew of heaven1 any of the rain that comes down in showers1 will be as barren as the earth would be without the dew and rain4 ,a ,personal ,matter ,the life of ,christianity1 says ,luther1 consists of personal pronouns4 ,it is one thing to say1 ',christ is a ,savior4' ,it is quite another to say1 ',he is my ,savior4' ,the devil can say the first4 ,only the true ,christian can say the second4 ,they ,knew ,it ,let me tell you how ,i had my eyes opened about the theater question4 ,i had an assistant superintendent of a ,sabbath school1 a very promising young man1 who seemed to be very happy in the work4 ,a star actor came to the city1 and he went to see him4 ,i knew nothing of it1 but the next ,sunday when he came into the ,sunday-school all over the building the boys cried out3 ,hypocrite6 ,hypocrite6 ,the perspiration started out of every pore of my body2 ,i thought they were looking at me4 ,i said to the little newsboys3 ,who are you calling a hypocrite8 ,they mentioned the assistant's name4 ,i asked the reason1 and they said3 ,we saw him going into the theater4 ,i had never said anything about the theater to those children1 but they saw that man going in1 and called him a hypocrite4 ,they seemed to know it was no place for a ,christian to go4 ,he lost his influence entirely1 withdrew from the school1 and after a while gave up ,christian work altogether4 ,he was just swept along with the tide in ,chicago and his influence was lost4 ,pull for the ,shore ,a vessel was wrecked off the shore4 ,eager eyes were watching and strong arms manned the life-boat4 ,for hours they tried to reach that vessel through the great breakers that raged and foamed on the sand-bank1 but it seemed impossible4 ,the boat appeared to be leaving the crew to perish4 ,but after a while the captain and sixteen men were taken off1 and the vessel went down4 ,when the life-boat came to you1 said a friend1 did you expect it had brought some tools to repair your old ship8 ,oh1 no1 was the response2 she was a total wreck4 ,two of her masts were gone1 and if we had stayed mending her only a few minutes1 we must have gone down sir4 ,when once off the old wreck and safe in the life-boat what remained for you to do8 ,nothing1 sir1 but just to pull for the shore4 ,man can't save himself4 ,he has been wrecked by sin1 and his only safety lies in taking ,jesus ,christ as his ,savior4 ,easy1 and ,yet ,difficult ,it is the easiest thing in the world to become a ,christian1 and it is also the most difficult4 ,you say3 ,that is a contradiction1 a paradox4 ,i will illustrate what ,i mean4 ,a little nephew of mine1 a few years ago1 took my ,bible and threw it down on the floor4 ,his mother said1 ,charlie1 pick up uncle's ,bible4 ,the little fellow said he would not4 ,charlie1 do you know what that word means8 ,she soon found out that he did1 and that he was not going to pick up the ,book4 ,his will had come right up against his mother's will4 ,i began to be quite interested in the struggle3 ,i knew if she did not break his will1 he would some day break her heart4 ,she repeated1 ,charlie1 go and pick up uncle's ,bible1 and put it on the table4 ,the little fellow said he could not do it4 ,i will punish you if you do not4 ,he saw a strange look in her eye1 and the matter began to get serious4 ,he did not want to be punished1 and he knew his mother would punish him if he did not lift the ,bible4 ,so he straightened every bone and muscle in him1 and he said he could not do it4 ,i really believe the little fellow had reasoned himself into the belief that he could not do it4 ,his mother knew he was only deceiving himself1 so she kept him right to the point4 ,at last he went down1 put both his arms around the ,bible1 and tugged away at it2 but he still said he could not do it4 ,the truth was--he did not want to4 ,he got up again without lifting it4 ,the mother said1 ,charlie1 ,i am not going to talk to you any more4 ,this matter has to be settled2 pick up that ,bible1 or ,i will punish you4 ,at last she broke his will1 and then he found it as easy as it is for me to turn my hand4 ,he picked up the ,bible1 and laid it on the table4 ,so it is with the sinner2 if you are really willing to take the ,water of ,life1 ,,you ,,can ,,do ,,it4 ,no ,difference ,during the war1 when enlisting was going on1 sometimes a man would come up with a nice silk hat on1 patent-leather boots1 kid gloves1 and a fine suit of clothes2 perhaps the next man who came along would be a hod-carrier1 dressed in the poorest kind of clothes4 ,both had to strip alike and put on the regimental uniform4 ,when you come and say you are not fit1 haven't got good clothes1 haven't got righteousness enough to be a ,christian1 remember that ,christ will furnish you with the uniform of heaven1 and you will be set down at the marriage feast of the ,lamb4 ,i don't care how black and vile your heart may be1 only accept the invitation of ,jesus ,christ1 and ,he will make you fit to sit down with the rest at that feast4 ,drawing a ,comparison ,when ,i was in ,california ,i went into a ,sunday-school and asked3 ,have you got some one who can write a plain hand8 ,yes4 ,we got up the blackboard1 and the lesson upon it proved to be the text1 ,lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven4 ,i said1 ,suppose we write upon that board some of the earthly treasures8 ,we will begin with 'gold4' ,the teacher readily put down gold1 and they all comprehended it1 for all had run to that country in hope of finding it4 ,well1 we will put down 'houses' next and then 'land4' ,next we will put down 'fast horses4' ,they all understood what fast horses were--they knew a good deal more about fast horses than they knew about the kingdom of ,god4 ,some of them1 ,i think1 actually made fast horses serve as gods4 ,next we will put down 'tobacco4' ,the teacher seemed to shrink at this4 ,put it down1 said ,i2 many a man thinks more of tobacco than he does of ,god4 ,well1 then we will put down 'rum4' ,he objected to this--didn't like to put it down at all4 ,down with it6 ,many a man will sell his reputation1 his home1 his wife1 his children1 everything he has1 for rum4 ,it is the god of some men4 ,many here are ready to sell their present and their eternal welfare for it4 ,put it down1 and down it went4 ,now1 said ,i1 suppose we put down some of the heavenly treasures4 ,put down ',jesus' to head the list1 then 'heaven1' then ',river of ,life1' then ',crown of ,glory'1 and went on until the column was filled1 and then just drew a line and showed the heavenly and the earthly things in contrast4 ,my friends1 they could not stand comparison4 ,if a man does that1 he cannot but see the superiority of the heavenly over the earthly treasures4 ,it turned out that this teacher was not a ,christian4 ,he had gone to ,california on the usual hunt--gold2 and when he saw the two columns placed side by side1 the excellence of the one over the other was irresistible1 and he was the first soul ,god gave me on that ,pacific coast4 ,he accepted ,christ1 and that man came to the station when ,i was coming away and blessed me for coming to that place4 ,a ,legend about ,doves ,there is a beautiful legend about a conference held by the doves to decide where they should make their abode4 ,one suggested that they should go to the woods2 but the objection was made that there they would be in danger from hawks2 another mentioned the cities1 but boys would stone them there1 and drive them away or kill them4 ,presently some dove suggested that they go and hide in the clefts of the rocks1 and there they were safe4 ,o ye that dwell in ,moab1 leave the cities and dwell in the rock1 and be like the dove that maketh her nest in the sides of the hole's mouth4 ,rock of ,ages1 cleft for me1 ,let me hide myself in thee4 ,look to ,christ6 ,a leading surgeon ,i heard of1 when he has a bad wound to dress1 or a broken limb to set1 tells the patient3 ,now1 look at the wound1 see just how it looks1 and then look at me6 ,so when you have seen the state your heart is in1 look up to ,christ1 and nowhere else4 ,paying ,attention to the ,preacher ,there was an architect in ,chicago who was converted4 ,in giving his testimony1 he said he had been in the habit of attending church for a great many years1 but he could not say that he had really heard a sermon all the time4 ,he said that when the minister gave out the text and began to preach1 he used to settle himself in the corner of the pew and work out the plans of some building4 ,he could not tell how many plans he had prepared while the minister was preaching4 ,he was the architect for one or two companies2 and he used to do all his planning in that way4 ,you see1 ,satan came in between him and the preacher1 and caught away the good seed of the ,word4 ,i have often preached to people1 and have been perfectly amazed to find they could hardly tell one solitary word of the sermon2 even the text had completely gone from them4 ,better ,make ,sure ,i hab hearn folks say1 ',hope ,i has 'ligion1 but ,i doan know'2 but ,i neber hearn a man say1 ',i hope's ,i has money1 but ,i doan know4' ,dat sorter 'ligion dat yer hopes ye's got1 but doan know1 ain't gwine to do no mo' good dan der money what yer hopes ye's got but doan know4 ,some ,things ,quite ,plain ,an ,english army officer in ,india who had been living an impure life went round one evening to argue religion with the chaplain4 ,during their talk the officer said3 ,religion is all very well1 but you must admit that there are difficulties--about the miracles1 for instance4 ,the chaplain knew the man and his besetting sin1 and quietly looking him in the face1 answered3 ,yes2 there are some things in the ,bible not very plain1 ,i admit2 but the seventh commandment is very plain4 ,your ,own ,picture ,there ,the ,bible is like an album4 ,i go into a man's house1 and while waiting for him1 ,i take up an album and open it4 ,i look at a picture4 ,why1 that looks like a man ,i know4 ,i turn over and look at another4 ,well1 ,i know that man4 ,i keep turning over the leaves4 ,well1 there is a man who lives in the same street as myself--he is my next-door neighbor4 ,and then ,i come upon another1 and see myself4 ,my friends1 if you read your ,bibles you will find your own pictures there4 ,it just describes you4 ,you may be a ,pharisee2 if so1 turn to the third chapter of ,john1 and see what ,christ said to the ,pharisee3 ,except a man be born again he cannot enter the kingdom of ,god4 ,but you may say3 ,i am not a ,pharisee2 ,i am a poor miserable sinner1 too bad to come to ,him4 ,well1 turn to the woman of ,samaria1 and see what ,christ said to her4 ,that's ,me6 ,while we were in ,london1 ,mr4 ,spurgeon one day in his orphanage told about the boys--that some of them had aunts and some cousins1 and that nearly every boy had some friend that took an interest in him1 and came to see him and gave him a little pocket money4 ,one day1 he said1 while he stood there1 a little boy came up to him and said3 ,mr4 ,spurgeon1 let me speak to you4 ,the boy sat down between ,mr4 ,spurgeon and the elder who was with him1 and said3 ,mr4 ,spurgeon1 suppose your father and mother were dead1 and you didn't have any cousins1 or aunts1 or uncles or friends to come and give you pocket money1 and give you presents1 don't you think you would feel bad8 ,because that's me6 ,said ,mr4 ,spurgeon3 ,the minute he said that1 ,i put my right hand down into my pocket and took out some money for him4 ,queer ,ideas of ,repentance ,the unconverted have a false idea about repentance2 they think ,god is going to make them repent4 ,i was once talking with a man on this subject1 and he summed up his whole argument by saying3 ,moody1 it has never struck me yet4 ,i said3 ,what has never struck you4 ,well1 he replied3 ,some people it strikes1 and some it doesn't4 ,there was a good deal of interest in our town a few years ago1 and some of my neighbors were converted1 but it didn't strike me4 ,that man thought that repentance was coming down some day to strike him like lightning4 ,another man said he expected some sensation1 like cold chills down his back4 ,repentance isn't feeling4 ,it is turning from sin to ,god4 ,one of the best definitions was given by a soldier4 ,some one asked him how he was converted4 ,he said3 ,the ,lord said to me1 ,halt6 ,attention6 ,right about face6 ,march6 and that was all there was in it4 ,a ,good ,illustration ,a little child gives a good illustration of faith4 ,let the wind blow her hat into the river1 and she does not worry2 she knows her mother will get her another4 ,she lives by faith4 ,come6 ,come6 ,come6 ,a man in one of our meetings had been brought there against his will2 he had come through some personal influence brought to bear upon him4 ,when he got to the meeting1 they were singing the chorus of a hymn3 _/99 ,come6 oh1 come to ,me6 ,come6 oh1 come to ,me6 ,weary1 heavy-laden1 ,come6 oh1 come to ,me6 99_/ ,he said afterward he thought he never saw so many fools together in his life before4 ,the idea of a number of men standing there singing1 ,come6 come6 come6 ,when he started home he could not get this little word out of his head2 it kept coming back all the time4 ,he went into a saloon1 and ordered some whisky1 thinking to drown it4 ,but he could not2 it still kept coming back4 ,he went into another saloon1 and drank some more whisky2 but the words kept ringing in his ears3 ,come6 come6 come6 ,he said to himself1 ,what a fool ,i am for allowing myself to be troubled in this way6 ,he went to a third saloon1 had another glass1 and finally got home4 ,he went off to bed1 but could not sleep2 it seemed as if the very pillow kept whispering the word1 ,come6 ,come6 ,he began to be angry with himself3 ,what a fool ,i was for ever going to that meeting at all6 ,when he got up he took the little hymn book1 found the hymn1 and read it over4 ,what nonsense6 he said to himself2 the idea of a rational man being disturbed by that hymn4 ,he set fire to the hymn book1 but he could not burn up the little word ,come6 ,he declared he would never go to another of the meetings2 but the next night he came again4 ,when he got there1 strange to say1 they were singing the same hymn4 ,there is that miserable old hymn again1 he said2 what a fool ,i am for coming6 ,when the ,spirit of ,god lays hold of a man1 he does a good many things he did not intend to do4 ,to make a long story short1 that man rose in a meeting of young converts1 and told the story that ,i have now told you4 ,pulling out the little hymn-book--for he had bought another copy--and opening it at this hymn1 he said3 ,i think this hymn is the sweetest and the best in the ,english language4 ,god blessed it to the saving of my soul4 ,and yet this was the very hymn that ,i despised4 ,don't ,scold ,he that winneth souls is wise4 ,do you want to win men8 ,do not drive or scold them4 ,do not try to tear down their prejudices before you begin to lead them to the truth4 ,some people think they have to tear down the scaffolding before they begin on the building4 ,an old minister once invited a young brother to preach for him4 ,the latter scolded the people1 and when he got home1 asked the old minister how he had done4 ,he said he had an old cow1 and when he wanted a good supply of milk1 he fed the cow2 he did not scold her4 ,a ,long ,time to ,reap ,a man died in the ,columbus penitentiary some years ago who had spent over thirty years in his cell4 ,he was one of the millionaires of ,ohio4 ,fifty years ago when they were trying to get a trunk road from ,chicago to ,new ,york1 they wanted to lay the line through his farm near ,cleveland4 ,he did not want his farm divided by the railroad1 so the case went into court1 where commissioners were appointed to pay the damages and to allow the road to be built4 ,one dark night1 a train was thrown off the track1 and several were killed4 ,this man was suspected1 was tried and found guilty1 and was sent to the penitentiary for life4 ,the farm was soon cut up into city lots1 and the man became a millionaire1 but he got no benefit from it4 ,it may not have taken him more than an hour to lay the obstruction on the railroad1 but he was over thirty years reaping the result of that one act6 ,as a ,little ,child ,a little child is the most dependent thing on earth4 ,all its resources are in its parents' love2 all it can do is to cry2 and its necessities explain the meaning to the mother's heart4 ,if we interpret its language1 it means3 ,mother1 wash me2 ,i cannot wash myself4 ,mother1 clothe me2 ,i am naked1 and cannot clothe myself4 ,mother1 feed me2 ,i cannot feed myself4 ,mother1 carry me2 ,i cannot walk4 ,it is written1 ,a mother may forget her sucking child2 yet will not ,i forget thee4 ,this it is to receive the ,kingdom of ,god as a little child--to come to ,jesus in our helplessness1 and say3 ,lord ,jesus1 wash me6 ,clothe me6 ,feed me6 ,carry me6 ,save me1 ,lord1 or ,i perish4--,rainsford4 ,following the ,lamb ,a friend who lost all his children told me about being in an eastern country some time ago1 and he saw a shepherd going down to a stream1 and he wanted to get his flock across4 ,he went into the water and called them by name1 but they came to the bank and bleated1 and were too afraid to follow4 ,at last he went back1 tightened his girdle about his loins1 took up two little lambs1 and put one inside his frock1 and another inside his bosom4 ,then he started into the water1 and the old sheep looked up to the shepherd instead of down into the water4 ,they wanted to see their little ones4 ,so he got them over the water1 and led them into the green pastures on the other side4 ,how many times the ,good ,shepherd has come down here and taken a little lamb to the hill-tops of glory1 and then the father and mother begin to look up and follow4 ,two ,pictures ,a friend told me of a poor man who had sent his son to school in the city4 ,one day the father was hauling some wood into the city1 perhaps to pay his boy's bills4 ,the young man was walking down the street with two of his school friends1 all dressed in the very height of fashion4 ,his father saw him1 and was so glad that he left his wood1 and went to the sidewalk to speak to him4 ,but the boy was ashamed of his father1 who had on his old working clothes1 and spurned him1 and said3 ,i don't know you4 ,will such a young man ever amount to anything8 ,never6 ,there was a very promising young man in my ,sunday-school in ,chicago4 ,his father was a confirmed drunkard1 and his mother took in washing to educate her four children4 ,this was her eldest son1 and ,i thought that he was going to redeem the whole family4 ,but one day a thing happened that made him go down in my estimation4 ,the boy was in the high school1 and was a very bright scholar4 ,one day he stood with his mother at the cottage door--it was a poor house1 but she could not pay for their schooling and feed and clothe her children and hire a very good house too out of her earnings4 ,when they were talking a young man from the high school came up the street1 and this boy walked away from his mother4 ,next day the young man said3 ,who was that ,i saw you talking to yesterday8 ,oh1 that was my washerwoman4 ,i said3 ,poor fellow6 ,he will never amount to anything4 ,that was a good many years ago4 ,i have kept my eye on him4 ,he has gone down1 down1 down1 and now he is just a miserable wreck4 ,of course1 he would go down6 ,ashamed of his mother that loved him and toiled for him1 and bore so much hardship for him6 ,i cannot tell you the contempt ,i had for that one act4 ,let us look at-- ,a ,brighter ,picture ,some years ago ,i heard of a poor woman who sent her boy to school and college4 ,when he was to graduate1 he wrote his mother to come1 but she sent back word that she could not because her best skirt had already been turned once4 ,she was so shabby that she was afraid he would be ashamed of her4 ,he wrote back that he didn't care how she was dressed1 and urged so strongly that she went4 ,he met her at the station1 and took her to a nice place to stay4 ,the day came for his graduation1 and he walked down the broad aisle with that poor mother dressed very shabbily1 and put her into one of the best seats in the house4 ,to her great surprise he was the valedictorian of the class1 and he carried everything before him4 ,he won a prize1 and when it was given to him1 he stepped down before the whole audience and kissed his mother1 and said3 ,here1 mother1 here is the prize6 ,it's yours4 ,i would not have won it if it had not been for you4 ,thank ,god for such a man6 ,the ,folly of ,covetousness ,the folly of covetousness is well shown in the following extract3 ,if you should see a man that had a large pond of water1 yet living in continual thirst1 nor suffering himself to drink half a draught for fear of lessening his pond2 if you should see him wasting his time and strength in fetching more water to his pond1 always thirsty1 yet always carrying a bucket of water in his hand1 watching early and late to catch the drops of rain1 gaping after every cloud1 and running greedily into every mire and mud in hopes of water1 and always studying how to make every ditch empty itself into the pond2 if you should see him grow gray in these anxious labors1 and at last end a thirsty life by falling into his own pond1 would you not say that such a one was not only the author of his own disquiet1 but was foolish enough to be reckoned among madmen8 ,but foolish and absurd as this character is1 it does not represent half the follies and absurd disquiets of the covetous man4 ,i have read of a millionaire in ,france1 who was a miser4 ,in order to make sure of his wealth1 he dug a cave in his wine cellar so large and deep that he could go down into it with a ladder4 ,the entrance had a door with a spring lock4 ,after a time1 he was missing4 ,search was made1 but they could find no trace of him4 ,at last his house was sold1 and the purchaser discovered this door in the cellar4 ,he opened it1 went down1 and found the miser lying dead on the ground1 in the midst of his riches4 ,the door must have shut accidentally after him1 and he perished miserably4 ,what is ,needed ,nine-tenths1 at least1 of our church members never think of speaking for ,christ4 ,if they see a man1 perhaps a near relative1 going right down to ruin1 going rapidly1 they never think of speaking to him about his sinful course and of seeking to win him to ,christ4 ,now certainly there must be something wrong4 ,and yet when you talk with them you find they have faith1 and you cannot say they are not children of ,god2 but they have not the power1 the liberty1 the love that real disciples of ,christ should have4 ,a great many think that we need new measures1 new churches1 new organs1 new choirs1 and all these new things4 ,that is not what the ,church of ,god needs to-day4 ,it is the old power that the apostles had4 ,if we have that in our churches1 there will be new life4 ,i remember when in ,chicago many were toiling in the work1 and it seemed as though the car of salvation didn't move on1 when a minister began to cry out from the very depths of his heart3 ,oh1 ,god1 put new ministers in every pulpit4 ,next ,monday ,i heard two or three men stand up and say1 ,we had a new minister last ,sunday--the same old minister1 but he had got new power1 and ,i firmly believe that is what we want to-day all over ,america--new ministers in the pulpit and new people in the pews4 ,we want people quickened by the ,spirit of ,god4 ,neglecting ,church ,a minister rebuked a farmer for not attending church1 and said3 ,you know1 ,john1 you are never absent from market4 ,oh1 was the reply1 we must go to market4 ,oratorical ,preaching ,my friends1 we have too many orators in the pulpit1 ,i am tired and sick of your silver-tongued orators4 ,i used to mourn because ,i couldn't be an orator4 ,i thought1 ,oh1 if ,i could only have the gift of speech like some men6 ,i have heard men with a smooth flow of language take the audience captive2 but they came and they went4 ,their voice was like the air--there wasn't any power back of it2 they trusted in their eloquence and their fine speeches4 ,that is what ,paul was thinking of when he wrote to the ,corinthians3 ,my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom1 but in demonstration of the ,spirit and of power3 that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men1 but in the power of ,god4 ,take a witness in court and let him try his oratorical powers in the witness-box1 and see how quickly the judge will rule him out4 ,it is the man who tells the plain1 simple truth that has the most influence with the jury4 ,suppose that ,moses had prepared a speech for ,pharaoh1 and had got his hair all smoothly brushed1 and had stood before the looking-glass1 or had gone to an elocutionist to be taught how to make an oratorical speech and how to make gestures4 ,suppose that he had buttoned his coat1 put one hand in his chest1 had struck an attitude1 and begun3 ,the ,god of our fathers1 the ,god of ,abraham1 ,isaac1 and ,jacob1 has commanded me to come into the presence of the noble ,king of ,egypt4 ,i think they would have taken his head right off6 ,they had ,egyptians who could be as eloquent as ,moses4 ,it was not eloquence they wanted4 ,to ,which ,class ,do ,you ,belong8 ,some one has said that there are three classes of people3 the wills1 the won'ts1 and the can'ts2 the first accomplish everything1 the second oppose everything1 and the third fail in everything4 ,sunday ,work ,a ,christian man was once urged by his employer to work on ,sunday4 ,does not your ,bible say that if your ass falls into a pit on the ,sabbath1 you may pull him out8 ,yes1 replied the other2 but if the ass had the habit of falling into the same pit every ,sabbath1 ,i would either fill up the pit or sell the ass4 ,there ,must ,be ,roots ,suppose ,i hire two men to set out trees1 and after a day or two ,i go out to see how they are getting along4 ,i find that one man has set out a hundred trees1 and the other only ten4 ,i say3 ,look here2 what does this mean8 ,that man has set out a hundred trees1 and you have set out only ten4 ,what does it mean8 ,yes1 but he has cut off all the roots1 and1 just stuck the tops into the ground4 ,i go to the other man1 and say3 ,what does this mean8 ,why have you planted all of these trees without roots8 ,i don't believe in roots2 they are of no account4 ,my trees look just as well as his4 ,but when the sun blazes upon the trees1 they all wither and die4 ,there are a lot of people running around who haven't got any roots4 ,a good many live on negations4 ,they are always telling what they don't believe4 ,i want a man to tell me what he does believe1 not what he does not believe4 ,and ,i like to meet a positive man4 ,we just want to know what men do believe4 ,we don't want trees that haven't any roots1 for they will dry up when the sun blazes on them4 ,there are a good many persons that are going on without any foundation2 they have no faith4 ,the ,path of ,obedience ,whatsoever ,he tells you to do1 do4 ,but be sure ,he says it4 ,don't take your ideas4 ,go and live right at home1 go and treat your wife and children right1 pay your debts1 and do some things of that kind4 ,a colored man said he had seen a sign2 he said it read1 ,g4 ,p4 ,c1 and he understood it to mean1 ,go preach ,christ4 ,another man got up1 and said4 ,no1 that ain't it2 it is ',go pick cotton4' ,if it is preach the gospel1 go preach the gospel2 and if it is pick cotton1 then pick cotton4 ,calling a ,man a ,liar ,you cannot offer a man a greater insult than to tell him he is a liar4 ,unbelief is telling ,god ,he is a liar4 ,suppose a man said1 ,mr4 ,moody1 ,i have no faith in you whatever4 ,don't you think it would grieve me8 ,there is not anything that would wound a man much more than to be told that you do not have any faith in him4 ,a great many men say1 ,oh1 ,i have profound reverence and respect for ,god4 ,yes1 profound respect1 but not faith4 ,why1 it is a downright insult6 ,suppose a man says1 ,mr4 ,moody1 ,i have profound respect for you1 profound admiration for you1 but ,i do not believe a word you say4 ,i wouldn't give much for his respect or admiration2 ,i wouldn't give much for his friendship4 ,god wants us to put our faith in ,him4 ,how it would wound a mother's feelings to hear her children say1 ,i do love mamma so much1 but ,i don't believe what she says4 ,how it would grieve that mother4 ,and that is about the way a great many of ,god's professed children talk4 ,some men seem to think it is a great misfortune that they do not have faith4 ,bear in mind it is not a misfortune1 but it is the damning sin of the world4 ,bending ,his ,will ,a mother told me up in ,minnesota that she had a little child who took a book and threw it out of the window4 ,she told him to go and pick it up4 ,the little boy said1 ,i won't4 ,she said1 ,what8 ,he said again1 ,i won't4 ,she said3 ,you must4 ,go and pick up that book4 ,he said he couldn't do it4 ,she took him out1 and she held him right to it4 ,dinner-time came1 and he hadn't picked up the book4 ,she took him to dinner1 and after it was over she took him out again4 ,they sat there until tea-time4 ,when tea-time came she took him in and gave him his supper1 and then took him out and kept him there until bed-time4 ,the next morning she went out again and kept him there until dinner-time4 ,he found he was in for a life job1 and he picked the book up4 ,she said she never had any trouble with the child afterward4 ,mothers1 if you don't make your boy obey when he is young1 he will break your heart4 ,how ,to ,find the ,thirsty ,when preaching in ,chicago1 ,dr4 ,monro ,gibson once asked in the inquiry meeting1 ,now1 how can we find out who is thirsty8 ,i was just thinking how we could find out4 ,if a boy should come down the aisle1 bringing a good pail full of clear water and a dipper1 we would soon find out who was thirsty4 ,the thirsty men and women would reach out for water2 but if he should walk down the aisle with an empty bucket1 we wouldn't find out4 ,people would look in and see that there was no water1 and say nothing4 ,so1 said he1 ,i think that is the reason we are not more blessed in our ministry2 we are carrying around empty buckets1 and the people see that we have not anything in them1 and they don't come forward4 ,making ,parables ,stewart ,robertson met ,marshall1 the great politician1 and ,marshall said3 ,why don't you preach in parables like your ,master8 ,robertson said3 ,i would if ,i knew enough4 ,i wish you would make me a few4 ,he never could get to see him from that day until one day he met him on a corner1 and he said3 ,marshall1 where are those parables8 ,i knew you would be after me1 but ,i give it up4 ,i tried1 but ,i couldn't make them4 ,i didn't know it was so hard4 ,people say1 ,oh1 any one can make up a sermon4 ,but if you think so1 just try it6 ,a ,father's ,mistake ,the story is told that a man once said he would not talk to his son about religion2 the boy should make his own choice when he grew up1 unprejudiced by him4 ,the boy broke his arm1 and when the doctor was setting it1 he cursed and swore the whole time4 ,the father was quite grieved and shocked4 ,ah1 said the doctor1 you were afraid to prejudice the boy in the right way1 but the devil had no such prejudice4 ,he has led your son the other way4 ,the idea that a father is to let his children run wild6 ,nature alone never brings forth anything but weeds4 ,a ,rum-,seller's ,son ,blows ,his ,brains ,out ,look at that rum-seller4 ,when we talk to him he laughs at us4 ,he tells you there is no hell1 no future--there is no retribution4 ,i've got one man in my mind now who ruined nearly all the sons in his neighborhood4 ,mothers and fathers went to him and begged him not to sell their children liquor4 ,he told them it was his business to sell liquor1 and he was going to sell liquor to every one who came4 ,the saloon was a blot upon the place as dark as hell4 ,but the man had a father's heart4 ,he had a son4 ,he didn't worship ,god1 but he worshiped that boy4 ,he didn't remember that whatsoever a man soweth so shall he reap4 ,my friends1 they generally reap what they sow4 ,it may not come immediately1 but the retribution will surely come4 ,if you ruin other men's sons1 some other man will ruin yours4 ,bear in mind ,god is a ,god of equity2 ,god is a ,god of justice4 ,he is not going to allow you to ruin others and escape yourself4 ,if we go against ,his laws1 we suffer4 ,time rolled on1 and that young man became a slave to drink1 and his life became such a burden to him that he put a revolver to his head and blew his brains out4 ,the father lived a few years1 but his life was as bitter as gall1 and then went down to his grave in sorrow4 ,ah1 my friends1 it is hard to kick against the pricks4 ,mrs4 ,moody ,teaching ,her ,child ,there was a time when our little boy did not like to go to church1 and would get up in the morning and say to his mother3 ,what day is to-morrow8 ,tuesday4 ,next day8 ,wednesday4 ,next day8 ,thursday2 and so on1 till he came to the answer1 ,sunday4 ,dear me1 he said4 ,i said to the mother1 ,we cannot have our boy grow up to hate ,sunday in this way2 that will never do4 ,that is the way ,i used to feel when ,i was a boy4 ,i used to look upon ,sunday with a certain amount of dread4 ,very few kind words were associated with the day4 ,i don't know that the minister even noticed me1 unless it was when ,i was asleep in the gallery1 and he had some one wake me up4 ,this kind of thing won't do4 ,we must make the ,sunday the most attractive day of the week2 not a day to be dreaded1 but a day of pleasure4 ,well1 the mother took the work up with this boy4 ,bless those mothers in their work with the children6 ,sometimes ,i feel as if ,i would rather be the mother of ,john ,wesley or ,martin ,luther or ,john ,knox than have all the glories in the world4 ,those mothers who are faithful with the children ,god has given them will not go unrewarded4 ,my wife went to work1 and took ,bible stories and put those blessed truths in a light that the boy could comprehend1 and soon his feeling for the ,sabbath was the other way4 ,what day's to-morrow8 he would ask4 ,sunday4 ,i am glad4 ,if we make ,bible truths interesting1 and break them up in some shape so that these children can get at them1 then they will begin to enjoy them4 ,missed ,at ,last6 ,in one of the tenement houses in ,new ,york ,city a doctor was sent for4 ,he came1 and found a young man very sick4 ,when he got to the bedside the young man said3 ,doctor1 ,i don't want you to deceive me2 ,i want to know the worst4 ,is this illness to prove serious8 ,after the doctor had made an examination1 he said1 ,i am sorry to tell you you cannot live out the night4 ,the young man looked up and said1 ,well1 then1 ,i have missed it at last6 ,missed what8 ,i have missed eternal life4 ,i always intended to become a ,christian some day1 but ,i thought ,i had plenty of time1 and put it off4 ,the doctor1 who was himself a ,christian man1 said3 ,it is not too late4 ,call on ,god for mercy4 ,no2 ,i have always had a great contempt for a man who repents when he is dying2 he is a miserable coward4 ,if ,i were not sick1 ,i would not have a thought about my soul1 and ,i am not going to insult ,god now4 ,the doctor spent the day with him1 read to him out of the ,bible1 and tried to get him to lay hold of the promises4 ,the young man said he would not call on ,god1 and in that state of mind he passed away4 ,just as he was dying the doctor saw his lips moving4 ,he reached down1 and all he could hear was the faint whisper3 ,i have missed it at last6 ,dear friend1 make sure that you do not miss eternal life at last4 ,choose ,now ,a teacher had been relating to his class the parable of the rich man and ,lazarus1 and he asked3 ,now1 which would you rather be1 boys1 the rich man or ,lazarus8 ,one boy answered1 ,i would rather be the rich man while ,i live1 and ,lazarus when ,i die4 ,that cannot be4 ,the ,mansion ,made ,ready ,once when ,i was traveling to a city there was a lady in the car with me4 ,after ,i had reached the hotel where ,i was to stay1 and had got comfortable quarters1 she came1 and said3 ,oh1 sir1 ,i cannot get a room in this hotel2 they are quite full6 ,how ever did you manage to get a room8 ,easily enough1 ,i replied2 ,i just telegraphed on before that ,i was coming1 to have a room ready for me4 ,and it is somewhat similar in regard to gaining admission to heaven4 ,your names must be sent on beforehand1 and entered in its book1 else you won't get in2 but get your names inscribed on its pages1 and then you won't be disappointed4 ,god will have a mansion ready for you when you ascend to your heavenly home4 ,when you come to its gates1 the guardian angels will refer to the book of life to see if your name is there4 ,if so1 pass in2 but if not1 admittance will be inexorably refused4 ,the ,promise ,for ,all ,every one of ,god's proclamations is connected with that word whosoever--whosoever believeth1 whosoever will4 ,i think it was ,richard ,baxter said he thanked ,god for that whosoever4 ,he would a good deal rather have that word whosoever than ,richard ,baxter2 for if it was ,richard ,baxter1 he should have thought it was some other ,richard ,baxter who had lived and died before him2 but whosoever he knew included him4 ,i heard of a woman once that thought there was no promise in the ,bible for her2 she thought the promises were for some one else1 not for her4 ,there are a good many of these people in the world4 ,they think it is too good to be true that they can be saved for nothing4 ,this woman one day got a letter1 and when she opened it she found it was not for her at all2 it was meant for another woman that had the same name2 and she had her eyes opened to the fact that if she should find some promise in the ,bible directed to her name1 she would not know whether it meant her or some one else that bore her name4 ,but you know the word whosoever includes every one in the wide world4 ,reaping ,as ,they ,sowed ,although ,god forgave the sins of ,jacob and ,david1 and the other ,old ,testament saints1 yet there were certain consequences of their sins which those saints had to suffer after they were forgiven4 ,if a man gets drunk and goes out and breaks his leg1 so that it must be amputated1 ,god will forgive him if he asks it1 but he will have to hop around on one leg all his life4 ,a man may sow thistle-seed with grain-seed in a moment of pique against his master1 and the master may forgive him1 but the man will have to reap the thistles with the grain4 ,small ,beginnings ,an obscure man preached one ,sunday to a few persons in a ,methodist chapel in the ,south of ,england4 ,a boy of fifteen years of age was in the audience1 driven into the chapel by a snowstorm4 ,the man took as his text the words1 ,look unto me and be ye saved1 and as he stumbled along as best he could1 the light of heaven flashed into that boy's heart4 ,he went out of the chapel saved1 and soon became known as ,c4 ,h4 ,spurgeon1 the boy-preacher4 ,the parsonage at ,epworth1 ,england1 caught fire one night1 and all the inmates were rescued except one son4 ,the boy came to a window1 and was brought safely to the ground by two farm-hands1 one standing on the shoulder of the other4 ,the boy was ,john ,wesley4 ,if you would realize the responsibility of that incident1 if you would measure the consequences of that rescue1 ask the millions of ,methodists who look back to ,john ,wesley as the founder of their denomination4 ,saying and ,doing ,a man was once conversing with a ,brahmin priest1 and he asked3 ,could you say1 ',i am the ,resurrection and the ,life8' ,yes1 replied the priest1 ,i could say that4 ,but could you make any one believe it8 ,christ proved ,his superiority right there4 ,his character and ,his actions were back of ,his words4 ,he exhibited ,his divine power to silence ,his enemies4 ,climb ,higher ,i remember being in a meeting after the ,civil ,war had been going on for about six months4 ,the army of the ,north had been defeated at ,bull ,run2 in fact1 we had nothing but defeat1 and it looked as though the ,republic was going to pieces2 so we were much cast down and discouraged4 ,at this meeting every speaker for a while seemed as if he had hung his harp upon the willow2 it was one of the gloomiest meetings ,i ever attended4 ,finally an old man with beautiful white hair got up to speak1 and his face literally shone4 ,young men1 he said1 you do not talk like sons of the ,king4 ,though it is dark just here1 remember it is light somewhere else4 ,then he went on to say that if it were dark all over the world1 it was light up around the ,throne4 ,he told us he had come from the ,east1 where a friend had described to him how he had been up a mountain to spend the night and see the sun rise4 ,as the party were climbing up the mountain1 and before they had reached the summit1 a storm came on4 ,this friend said to the guide3 ,i will give this up2 take me back4 ,the guide smiled1 and replied3 ,i think we shall get above the storm soon4 ,on they went2 and it was not long before they got up to where it was as calm as any summer evening4 ,down in the valley a terrible storm raged2 they could hear the thunder rolling1 and see the lightning's flash2 but all was serene on the mountain top4 ,and so1 my young friends1 continued the old man1 though all is dark around you1 come a little higher1 and the darkness will flee away4 ,often when ,i have been inclined to get discouraged1 ,i have thought of what he said4 ,if you are down in the valley amidst the thick fog and the darkness1 get a little higher2 get nearer to ,christ1 and know more of ,him4 ,the ,greatest ,miracle ,jesus said1 ,the works that ,i do shall ye do also1 and greater works than these shall ye do because ,i go to the ,father4 ,i used to stumble over that4 ,i didn't understand it4 ,i thought what greater work could any man do than ,christ had done8 ,how could any one raise a dead man who had been laid away in the sepulchre for days1 and who had already begun to turn back to dust2 how with a word could he call him forth8 ,but the longer ,i live the more ,i am convinced it is a greater thing to influence a man's will2 a man whose will is set against ,god2 to have that will broken and brought into subjection to ,god's will--or1 in other words1 it is a greater thing to have power over a living1 sinning1 ,god-hating man1 than to quicken the dead4 ,he who could create a world could speak a dead soul into life2 but ,i think the greatest miracle this world has ever seen was the miracle at ,pentecost4 ,here were men who surrounded the apostles1 full of prejudice1 full of malice1 full of bitterness1 their hands1 as it were1 dripping with the blood of the ,son of ,god1 and yet an unlettered man1 a man whom they detested1 a man whom they hated1 stands up and preaches the ,gospel1 and three thousand of them are immediately convicted and converted1 and become disciples of the ,lord ,jesus ,christ4 ,different ,kinds of ,murder ,one young man at college1 an only son1 whose mother wrote to him remonstrating against his gambling and drinking habits1 took the letters out of the post-office1 and when he found that they were from her1 he tore them up without reading them4 ,she said3 ,i thought ,i would die when ,i found ,i had lost my hold on that son4 ,if a boy kills his mother by his conduct1 you can't call it anything else than murder1 and he is as truly guilty of breaking the sixth commandment as if he drove a dagger to her heart4 ,it ,is ,not ,for ,you6 ,commenting on the text3 ,it is not for you to know the times or the seasons1 which the ,father hath put in ,his own power1 ,spurgeon said3 ,if ,i were introduced into a room where a large number of parcels were stored up1 and ,i was told that there was something good for me1 ,i should begin to look for that which had my name upon it1 and when ,i came upon a parcel and ,i saw in pretty big letters1 ',it is not for you1' ,i should leave it alone4 ,here1 then1 is a casket of knowledge marked1 ',it is not for you to know the times or the seasons1 which the ,father hath put in ,his own power4' ,cease to meddle with matters which are concealed1 and be satisfied to know the things which are clearly revealed4 ,stolen ,goods a ,burden ,i heard of a boy who stole a cannon-ball from a navy-yard4 ,he watched his opportunity1 sneaked into the yard1 and secured it4 ,but when he had it1 he hardly knew what to do with it4 ,it was heavy1 and too large to conceal in his pocket1 so he had to put it under his hat4 ,when he got home with it1 he dared not show it to his parents1 because it would have led at once to his detection4 ,he said in after years it was the last thing he ever stole4 ,the story is told that a royal diamond valued at #fjj1jjj was stolen from a window of a jeweler1 to whom it had been given to set4 ,a few months afterward a miserable man died a miserable death in a poor lodging-house4 ,in his pocket was found the diamond1 and a letter telling how he had not dared to sell it1 lest it should lead to his discovery and imprisonment4 ,it never brought him anything but anxiety and pain4 ,unlocked ,by ,prayer ,god's best gifts1 like valuable jewels1 are kept under lock and key1 and those who want them must1 with fervent faith1 importunately ask for them2 for ,god is the rewarder of them that diligently seek ,him4 ,the ,faithful ,promiser ,god is always true to what ,he promises to do4 ,he made promises to ,abraham1 ,jacob1 ,moses1 ,joshua1 and the others1 and did ,he not fulfill them8 ,he will fulfill every word of what ,he has promised2 yet how few take ,him at ,his word6 ,when ,i was a young man ,i was clerk in the establishment of a man in ,chicago1 whom ,i observed frequently occupied sorting and marking bills4 ,he explained to me what he had been doing2 on some notes he had marked ,b1 on some ,d1 and on others ,g2 those marked ,b1 he told me1 were bad1 those marked ,d meant they were doubtful1 and those with ,g on them mean they were good2 and1 said he1 you must treat all of them accordingly4 ,and thus people indorse ,god's promises1 by marking some as bad and others as doubtful2 whereas we ought to take all of them as good1 for ,he has never once broken ,his word1 and all that ,he says ,he will do1 will be done in the fullness of time4 ,throw ,out the ,ballast ,when men go up in a balloon1 they carry with them what they call ballast--that is1 small bags of sand1 and when they want to rise higher they just throw out some of the sand4 ,so we1 if we want to rise nearer heaven1 must just throw out some of the sand1 and cast aside every weight4 ,we won't rise higher till we do so4 ,a ,mother's ,love ,the closest tie on earth is a mother's love for her child4 ,there are a good many things that will separate a man from his wife1 but there isn't a thing in the wide1 wide world that will separate a true mother from her own child4 ,i will admit that there are unnatural mothers1 that there are mothers that have gone out of their heads1 mothers that are so steeped in sin and iniquity that they will turn against their own children1 but a true mother will never1 never turn against her own child4 ,i have talked with mothers when my blood boiled with indignation against the sons for their treatment of their mothers1 and ,i have said3 ,why don't you cast him off8 ,they have said3 ,why1 ,mr4 ,moody1 ,i love him still4 ,he is my son4 ,i was once preaching for ,dr4 ,g4 in ,st4 ,louis1 and when ,i got through he said that he wanted to tell me a story4 ,there was a boy who was very bad4 ,he had a very bad father1 who seemed to take delight in teaching his son everything that was bad4 ,the father died1 and the boy went on from bad to worse until he was arrested for murder4 ,when he was on trial1 it came out that he had murdered five other people1 and from one end of the city to the other there was a universal cry going up against him4 ,during his trial they had to guard the court-house1 the indignation was so intense4 ,the white-haired mother got just as near her son as she could1 and every witness that went into the court and said anything against him seemed to hurt her more than her son4 ,when the jury brought in a verdict of guilty a great shout went up1 but the old mother nearly fainted away2 and when the judge pronounced the sentence of death they thought she would faint away4 ,after it was over she threw her arms around him and kissed him1 and there in the court they had to tear him from her embrace4 ,she then went the length and breadth of the city trying to get men to sign a petition for his pardon4 ,and when he was hanged1 she begged the governor to let her have the body of her son1 that she might bury it4 ,they say that death has torn down everything in this world1 everything but a mother's love4 ,that is stronger than death itself4 ,the governor refused to let her have the body1 but she cherished the memory of that boy as long as she lived4 ,a few months later she followed her boy1 and when she was dying she sent word to the governor1 and begged that her body might be laid close to her son4 ,that is a mother's love6 ,she wasn't ashamed to have her grave pointed out for all time as the grave of the mother of the most noted criminal the ,state of ,vermont ever had4 ,the prophet takes hold of that very idea4 ,he says3 ,can a mother forget her child8 ,but a mother's love is not to be compared to the love of ,god4 ,restitution ,i was preaching in ,british ,columbia some years ago and a young man came to me1 and wanted to become a ,christian4 ,he had been smuggling opium into the ,states4 ,well1 my friend1 ,i said1 ,i don't think there is any chance for you to become a ,christian until you make restitution4 ,he said1 ,if ,i attempt to do that1 ,i will fall into the clutches of the law1 and ,i will go to the penitentiary4 ,well1 ,i replied1 you had better do that than go to the judgment-seat of ,god with that sin upon your soul1 and have eternal punishment4 ,the ,lord will be very merciful if you set your face to do right4 ,he went away sorrowful1 but came back the next day1 and said3 ,i have a young wife and child1 and all the furniture in my house ,i have bought with money ,i have got in this dishonest way4 ,if ,i become a ,christian1 that furniture will have to go1 and my wife will know it4 ,better let your wife know it1 and better let your home and furniture go4 ,would you come up and see my wife8 he asked2 ,i don't know what she will say4 ,i went up to see her1 and when ,i told her1 the tears trickled down her cheeks1 and she said3 ,mr4 ,moody1 ,i will gladly give everything if my husband can become a true ,christian4 ,she took out her pocketbook1 and handed over her last penny4 ,he had a piece of land in the ,united ,states1 which he deeded over to the government4 ,i do not know1 in all my backward track1 of any living man who has had a better testimony for ,jesus ,christ than that man4 ,he had been dishonest1 but when the truth came to him that he must make it right before ,god would help him1 he made it right4 ,no amount of weeping over sin1 and saying that you feel sorry1 is going to help it unless you are willing to confess and make restitution4 ,willie and the ,bears ,i said to my little family1 one morning1 a few weeks before the ,chicago fire1 ,i am coming home this afternoon to give you a ride4 ,my little boy clapped his hands4 ,oh1 papa1 will you take me to see the bears in ,lincoln ,park8 ,yes4 ,i had not been gone long when my little boy said1 ,mamma1 ,i wish you would get me ready4 ,oh1 she said1 it will be a long time before papa comes4 ,but ,i want to get ready1 mamma4 ,at last he was ready to have the ride1 face washed1 and clothes all nice and clean4 ,now1 you must take good care1 and not get yourself dirty again1 said mamma4 ,of course1 he was going to take care2 he wasn't going to get dirty6 ,so off he ran to watch for me4 ,however1 it was a long time yet until the afternoon1 and after a little he began to play4 ,when ,i got home1 ,i found him outside1 with his face all covered with dirt4 ,i can't take you to the park that way1 ,willie4 ,why papa8 you said you would take me4 ,ah1 but ,i can't2 you're all over mud4 ,i couldn't be seen with such a dirty little boy4 ,why1 ,i'se clean1 papa2 mamma washed me4 ,well1 you've got dirty again4 ,but he began to cry1 and ,i could not convince him that he was dirty4 ,i'se clean2 mamma washed me6 he cried4 ,do you think ,i argued with him8 ,no4 ,i just took him up in my arms1 and carried him into the house1 and showed him his face in the looking-glass4 ,he had not a word to say4 ,he would not take my word for it2 but one look at the glass was enough2 he saw it for himself4 ,he didn't say he wasn't dirty after that6 ,now1 the looking-glass showed him that his face was dirty--but ,i did not take the looking-glass to wash it2 of course not4 ,yet that is just what thousands of people do4 ,the ,law is the looking-glass to see ourselves in1 to show us how vile and worthless we are in the sight of ,god2 but they take the ,law and try to wash themselves with it1 instead of being washed in the blood of the ,lamb4 ,christ ,for ,all ,an old ,welshwoman said ,christ was ,welsh1 and an ,englishman said3 ,no1 ,he was a ,jew4 ,she declared that she knew ,he was ,welsh1 because ,he spoke so that she could understand ,him4 ,starting ,right ,many a man is lost because he does not start right4 ,he makes a bad start4 ,a young man comes from his country home1 and enters upon city life4 ,temptation arises1 and he becomes false to his principles4 ,he meets with some scoffing1 sneering man1 who jeers at him because he goes to a church service2 or because he is seen reading his ,bible2 or because he is known to pray to ,god4 ,and the young man proves to be weak-kneed2 he cannot stand the scoffs and the sneers and the jeers of his companions2 and so he becomes untrue to his principles1 and gives them up4 ,i want to say here to young men1 that when a young man makes a wrong start1 in ninety-nine cases out of a hundred it is ruin to him4 ,the first game of chance2 the first betting transaction2 the first false entry in the books2 the first quarter-dollar taken from the cash-box or the till2 the first night spent in evil company--either of these may prove the turning-point2 either of these may represent a wrong start4 ,napoleon and the ,conscript ,there is a well-known story told of ,napoleon the ,first's time4 ,in one of the conscriptions1 during one of his many wars1 a man was balloted as a conscript who did not want to go1 but he had a friend who offered to go in his place4 ,his friend joined the regiment in his name1 and was sent off to the war4 ,by and by a battle came on1 in which he was killed1 and they buried him on the battle-field4 ,some time after1 the ,emperor wanted more men1 and by some mistake the first man was balloted a second time4 ,they went to take him1 but he remonstrated4 ,you cannot take me4 ,why not8 ,i am dead1 was the reply4 ,you are not dead2 you are alive and well4 ,but ,i am dead1 he said4 ,why1 man1 you must be mad4 ,where did you die8 ,at such a battle1 and you left me buried on such a battle-field4 ,you talk like a madman1 they cried2 but the man stuck to his point that he had been dead and buried some months4 ,look up your books1 he said1 and see if it is not so4 ,they looked1 and found that he was right4 ,they found the man's name entered as drafted1 sent to the war1 and marked off as killed4 ,look here1 they said1 you didn't die2 you must have got some one to go for you2 it must have been your substitute4 ,i know that1 he said2 he died in my stead4 ,you cannot touch me2 ,i died in that man1 and ,i go free4 ,the law has no claim against me4 ,they would not recognize the doctrine of substitution1 and the case was carried to the ,emperor4 ,he said that the man was right1 that he was dead and buried in the eyes of the law1 and that ,france had no claim against him4 ,this story may or may not be true1 but one thing ,i know is true3 ,jesus ,christ suffered death for the sinner1 and those who accept ,him are free from the ,law4 ,green ,fields or ,desert8 ,when ,i was out in ,california1 the first time ,i went down from the ,sierra ,nevada ,mountains and dropped into the ,valley of the ,sacramento1 ,i was surprised to find on one farm that everything about it was green--all the trees and flowers1 everything was blooming1 and everything was green and beautiful1 and just across the hedge everything was dried up1 and there was not a green thing there4 ,i could not understand it4 ,i made inquiries1 and ,i found that the man that had everything green1 irrigated2 he just poured the water right on1 and kept everything green1 while the fields that were next to his were as dry as ,gideon's fleece without a drop of dew4 ,so it is with a great many in the church to-day4 ,they are like these farms in ,california--a dreary desert1 everything parched and desolate1 and apparently no life in them4 ,they can sit next to a man who is full of the ,spirit of ,god1 who is like a green bay tree1 and who is bringing forth fruit1 and yet they will not seek a similar blessing4 ,well1 why this difference8 ,because ,god has poured water on him that was thirsty2 that is the difference4 ,one has been seeking this anointing1 and he has received it2 and when we want this above everything else ,god will surely give it to us4 ,religion ,in the ,home ,what we want is family piety1 righteousness in our homes4 ,a young minister came to me1 and said he couldn't get along with his wife1 and what should he do8 ,i told him to get out of the ministry4 ,a man has no right to be in the pulpit unless he can get along with his family4 ,a ,universal ,failing ,it is a false idea that all pride is confined to the upper classes4 ,you will find it in the lanes and alleys4 ,you will find little dirty1 barefooted children who will get a string of shavings1 put it round their necks1 and strut down the street as if they were wearing golden beads4 ,pride is born and grows in the human heart4 ,you do not plant it there2 it grows there of itself4 ,there is as much pride among the poor as among the rich2 and that is one reason why more of them do not come to the ,lord ,jesus ,christ3 they do not like to be laughed at1 scoffed at1 sneered at1 and ridiculed4 ,it costs them too much4 ,words and ,actions ,a man may preach with the eloquence of an angel1 but if he doesn't live what he preaches1 and act out in his home and his business what he professes1 his testimony goes for naught1 and the people say it is all hypocrisy after all2 it is all a sham4 ,words are very empty1 if there is nothing back of them4 ,your testimony is poor and worthless1 if there is not a record back of that testimony consistent with what you profess4 ,what we need is to pray to ,god to lift us up out of this low1 cold1 formal state that we live in1 that we may dwell in the atmosphere of ,god continually1 and that the ,lord may lift upon us the light of ,his countenance1 and that we may shine in this world1 reflecting ,his grace and glory4 ,the ,one-,eyed ,doe ,there is an old fable that a doe that had but one eye used to graze near the sea2 and in order to be safe1 she kept her blind eye toward the water1 from which side she expected no danger1 while with the good eye she watched the country4 ,some men1 noticing this1 took a boat and came upon her from the sea and shot her4 ,with her dying breath1 she said3 ,oh6 hard fate6 that ,i should receive my death wound from that side whence ,i expected no harm1 and be safe in the part where ,i looked for most danger4 ,lost ,opportunities ,if a farmer neglects to plant in the springtime1 he can never recover the lost opportunity2 no more can you1 if you neglect yours4 ,youth is a seed-time1 and if it is allowed to pass without good seed being sown1 weeds will spring up and choke the soil4 ,it will take bitter toil to uproot them4 ,an old divine said that when a good farmer sees a weed in his field he has it pulled up4 ,if it is taken early enough1 the blank is soon filled in1 and the crop waves over the whole field4 ,but if allowed to run too late1 the bald patch remains4 ,it would have been better if the weed had never been allowed to get root4 ,steer ,clear ,a steamboat was stranded in the ,mississippi ,river1 and the captain could not get her off4 ,eventually a hard-looking fellow came on board1 and said3 ,captain1 ,i understand you want a pilot to take you out of this difficulty8 ,the captain said1 ,are you a pilot8 ,well1 they call me one4 ,do you know where the snags and sand-bars are8 ,no1 sir4 ,well1 how do you expect to take me out of here if you don't know where the snags and sand-bars are8 ,i know where they ain't6 was the reply4 ,beware of temptations4 ,lead us not into temptation1 our ,lord taught us to pray2 and again ,he said1 ,watch and pray1 lest ye enter into temptation4 ,we are weak and sinful by nature1 and it is a good deal better for us to pray for deliverance rather than to run into temptation and then pray for strength to resist4 ,looking for ,revivals ,men are anxious for a revival in business4 ,there is a great revival in politics just now4 ,in all departments of life you find that men are very anxious for a revival in the things that concern them most4 ,if this is legitimate--and it is perfectly right in its place--should not every child of ,god be praying for and desiring a revival of godliness in the world at the present time8 ,do we not need a revival of downright honesty1 of truthfulness1 of uprightness1 and of temperance8 ,are there not many who have become alienated from the ,church of ,god and from the house of the ,lord1 who are forming an attachment to the saloon8 ,are not our sons being drawn away by hundreds and thousands1 so that while you often find the churches empty1 the liquor shops are crowded every ,sabbath afternoon and evening8 ,i am sure the saloon-keepers are glad if they can have a revival in their business2 they do not object to sell more whisky and beer4 ,then surely every true ,christian ought to desire that men who are in danger of perishing eternally should be saved and rescued4 ,opportunity ,a sculptor once showed a visitor his studio4 ,it was full of statues of gods4 ,one was very curious4 ,the face was concealed by being covered with hair1 and there were wings on each foot4 ,what is his name8 said the visitor4 ,opportunity1 was the reply4 ,why is his face hidden8 ,because men seldom know him when he comes to them4 ,why has he wings on his feet8 ,because he is soon gone1 and once gone can never be overtaken4 ,it becomes us1 then1 to make the most of the opportunities ,god has given us4 ,the ,usual ,way ,i used at one time to read so many chapters of the ,bible a day1 and if ,i did not get through my usual quantity1 ,i thought ,i was getting cold and backsliding4 ,but1 mind you1 if a man had asked me two hours afterward what ,i had read1 ,i could not tell him2 ,i had forgotten it nearly all4 ,when ,i was a boy ,i used1 among other things1 to hoe corn on a farm2 and ,i used to hoe it so badly1 in order to get over so much ground1 that at night ,i had to put down a stick in the ground1 so as to know next morning where ,i had left off4 ,that was somewhat in the same fashion as running through so many chapters every day4 ,a man will say1 ,wife1 did ,i read that chapter8 ,well1 says she1 ,i don't remember4 ,and neither of them can recollect4 ,and perhaps he reads the same chapter over and over again2 and they call that studying the ,bible4 ,i do not think there is a book in the world we neglect so much as the ,bible4 ,getting ,on ,splendidly ,one man said to another1 some time ago3 ,how are you getting on at your church8 ,oh1 splendid4 ,many conversions8 ,well--well1 on that side we are not getting on so well4 ,but1 he said1 we have rented all our pews and are able to pay all our running expenses4 ,we are getting on splendidly4 ,that is what the godless call getting on splendidly4 ,they rent the pews1 pay the minister1 and meet all the running expenses4 ,a man was being shown through one of the cathedrals of ,europe2 he had come in from the country4 ,one of the men belonging to the cathedral was showing him around1 when he inquired3 ,do you have may conversions here8 ,many what8 ,many conversions here8 ,ah1 man1 this is not a ,wesleyan chapel4 ,the idea of there being conversions there6 ,and you can go into a good many churches in this country and ask if they have many conversions there1 and they would not know what it meant1 they are so far away from the ,lord2 they are not looking for conversions1 and don't expect them4 ,a ,hundred ,years ,hence ,once1 as ,i was walking down the street1 ,i heard some people laughing and talking aloud4 ,one of them said3 ,well1 there will be no difference2 it will be all the same a hundred years hence4 ,the thought flashed across my mind1 ,will there be no difference8 ,where will you be a hundred years hence8 ,young man1 just ask yourself the question1 ,where shall ,i be8 ,some of you who are getting on in years may be in eternity ten years hence4 ,where will you be1 on the left or the right hand of ,god8 ,i cannot tell your feelings1 but ,i can my own4 ,i ask you1 ,where will you spend eternity8 ,where will you be a hundred years hence8 ,a ,free ,gift ,remember1 salvation is a free gift1 and it is a free gift for us4 ,can you buy it8 ,it is a free gift1 presented to whosoever will accept it4 ,suppose ,i were to say1 ,i will give this ,bible to whosoever will take it2 what have you got to do8 ,why1 nothing but take it4 ,but a man comes forward1 and says3 ,i'd like that ,bible very much4 ,well1 didn't ,i say 'whosoever' will can have it8 ,yes2 but ,i'd like to have you mention my name4 ,well1 here it is4 ,still he keeps eyeing the ,bible1 and saying1 ,i'd like to have that ,bible2 but ,i'd like to give you something for it4 ,i don't like to take it for nothing4 ,but ,i am not here to sell ,bibles2 take it1 if you want it4 ,well1 ,i want it2 but ,i'd like to give you something for it4 ,let me give you a cent for it2 though1 to be sure1 it's worth about five dollars4 ,suppose ,i accept the cent2 the man takes up the ,bible and marches away home with it4 ,his wife asks1 ,where did you get that ,bible8 ,oh1 ,i bought it4 ,mark the point2 when he gave the penny1 it ceased to be a gift4 ,so with salvation4 ,if you were to pay ever so little1 it would not be a gift4 ,what ,seed ,are ,you ,sowing8 ,suppose ,i meet a man who is sowing seed1 and say1 ,hello1 stranger1 what are you sowing8 ,seed4 ,what kind of seed8 ,i don't know4 ,don't you know whether it is good or bad8 ,no2 ,i can't tell4 ,but it is seed--that is all ,i want to know1 and ,i am sowing it4 ,you would say that he was a first-class lunatic1 wouldn't you8 ,but he wouldn't be half so mad as the man who goes on sowing for time and eternity1 and never asks himself what he is sowing or what the harvest will be4 ,father1 what seed are you sowing in your family8 ,are you setting your children a good or a bad example8 ,do you spend your time at the saloon or the club1 until you have become almost a stranger to them8 or are you training them for ,god and righteousness8 ,bound ,hand and ,foot ,when ,i was speaking to five thousand children in ,glasgow some years ago1 ,i took a spool of thread and said to one of the largest boys3 ,do you believe ,i can bind you with that thread8 ,he laughed at the idea4 ,i wound the thread around him a few times1 and he broke it with a single jerk4 ,then ,i wound the thread around and around1 and by and by ,i said3 ,now get free if you can4 ,he couldn't move head or foot4 ,if you are slave to some vile habit1 you must either slay that habit1 or it will slay you4 ,unity ,there is one thing ,i have noticed as ,i have traveled in different countries2 ,i never yet have known the ,spirit of ,god to work where the ,lord's people were divided4 ,unity is one thing that we must have if we are to have the ,holy ,spirit of ,god to work in our midst4 ,if a church is divided1 the members should immediately seek unity4 ,let the believers come together and get the difficulty out of the way4 ,if the minister of a church cannot unite the people1 if those that were dissatisfied will not fall in1 it would be better for that minister to retire4 ,i think there are a good many ministers in this country who are losing their time2 they have lost1 some of them1 months and years2 they have not seen any fruit1 and they will not see any fruit1 because they have a divided church4 ,such a church cannot grow in divine things4 ,the ,spirit of ,god doesn't work where there is division1 and what we want to-day is the spirit of unity amongst ,god's children1 so that the ,lord may work4 ,get ,inside6 ,you have looked at the windows of a grand church erected at the cost of many thousands of dollars4 ,from the outside they did not seem very beautiful2 but get inside1 when the rays of the sun are striking upon the stained glass1 and you begin to understand what others have told you of their magnificence4 ,so it is when you have come into personal contact with ,christ4 ,you find ,him to be the very ,savior and friend you need4 ,you will see in ,him what you have never seen before4 ,hunt ,for ,something ,we must study the ,bible thoroughly1 and hunt it through1 as it were1 for some great truth4 ,if a friend were to see me searching about a building1 and were to come up1 and say1 ,moody1 what are you looking for8 ,have you lost something8 and ,i were to say1 ,no1 ,i haven't lost anything2 ,i'm not looking for anything particular1 ,i fancy he would just let me go on by myself1 and think me very foolish4 ,but if ,i were to say1 ,yes1 ,i have lost a dollar1 why1 then1 ,i might expect him to help me to find it4 ,read the ,bible1 my friends1 as if you were seeking for something of value4 ,it is a good deal better to take a single chapter1 and spend a month on it1 than to read the ,bible at random for a month4 ,when ,ye ,think ,not ,mc,cheyne1 the ,scotch preacher1 once said to some friends1 ,do you think ,christ will come to-night8 ,one after another they said1 ,i think not4 ,when all had given this answer1 he solemnly repeated this text1 ,the ,son of ,man cometh at an hour when ye think not4 ,home ,piety ,if a ,christian is unsound in patience or unsound in love1 we take no notice of it2 but let him be unsound in faith1 and off goes his head4 ,i do hate to see a minister or professing ,christian mean and peevish to his wife1 and yet be as polite as a dancing-master to other women4 ,i tell you he is not fit to preach the ,word of ,god4 ,i don't want to have anything to do with him4 ,the home was established before the church1 and he sadly needs more home piety4 ,constant ,watching ,the ,persians had an annual festival when they slew all the serpents and venomous creatures they could find2 but they allowed them to swarm as fast and freely as ever until the festival came round once more4 ,it was poor policy4 ,sins1 like serpents1 breed quickly1 and need to be constantly watched4 ,the ,wrong ,physician ,i heard once of a man who went to ,england from the ,continent1 and brought letters with him to eminent physicians from the ,emperor4 ,the letters said3 ,this man is a personal friend of mine1 and we are afraid he is going to lose his reason4 ,do all you can for him4 ,the doctor asked him if he had lost any dear friend in his own country1 or any position of importance1 or what it was that was weighing on his mind4 ,the young man said3 ,no2 but my father and grandfather and myself were brought up infidels1 and for the last two or three years this thought has been haunting me1 ',where shall ,i spend eternity8' ,and the thought of it follows me day and night4 ,the doctor said1 ,you have come to the wrong physician1 but ,i will tell you of ,one who can cure you2 and he told him of ,christ1 and read to him the fifty-third chapter of ,isaiah1 ,with ,his stripes we are healed4 ,the young man said1 ,doctor1 do you believe that8 ,the doctor told him he did1 and prayed and wrestled with him1 and at last the clear light of ,calvary shone on his soul4 ,he had settled the question in his own mind at last1 where he would spend eternity4 ,i ask you1 sinner1 to settle if now4 ,it is for you to decide4 ,shall it be with the saints and martyrs and prophets1 or in the dark caverns of hell1 amidst blackness and darkness forever8 ,make haste to be wise2 for how shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation8 ,seeking the ,lost ,i remember1 when we were in ,london1 they found one old woman who was eighty-five years old1 and not a ,christian4 ,after the worker had prayed1 she made a prayer herself3 ,o ,lord1 ,i thank ,thee for going out of ,thy way to find me4 ,he is all the time going out of ,his way to find the lost4 ,he ,got ,time ,to ,think ,i was once preaching on the text1 ,be not deceived2 ,god is not mocked2 for whatsoever a man soweth1 that shall he also reap4 ,no sooner had ,i read it than a man stood right up in the audience and said3 ,i don't believe it4 ,i said3 ,my friend1 that doesn't change the fact4 ,truth is truth1 whether you believe it or not2 and a lie is a lie1 whether you believe it or not4 ,he didn't want to believe it4 ,when the meeting broke up1 an officer was at the door to arrest him4 ,he was tried and sent to the penitentiary for twelve months for stealing4 ,i really believe that when he got into his cell1 he believed that he had to reap what he sowed4 ,the ,motherless ,child ,once ,i heard of a little sick child1 whose mother was seriously ill2 and so1 in order that she might have quiet1 and that the sick child might be no trouble to her1 the little one was taken away to a friend's house1 and placed in charge of a kind lady for a time4 ,the mother grew worse1 and at length died4 ,the father said3 ,we'll not trouble the child about it2 she is too young to remember her mother2 just let her remain where she is until the funeral is over4 ,this was done1 and in a few days the little girl was brought back to the house4 ,no mention was made of her mother1 or of what had occurred2 but no sooner was she taken to the house than she ran first into one room1 then into another1 into the parlor1 the dining-room1 and all over the house1 and then away into a little room where her mother used to go to pray alone4 ,where is mother8 she cried4 ,i want mother6 ,and when they were compelled to tell her what had happened1 she cried out3 ,take me away1 take me away2 ,i don't want to be here without mother4 ,it was the mother made it home to her4 ,and so it is in heaven4 ,it is not so much the white robes1 the golden crown1 or the harps of gold1 but it is the society we shall meet there4 ,who1 then1 are there8 ,what company shall we have when we get there8 ,jesus is there1 the ,holy ,father is there1 the ,spirit is there--our ,father1 our elder ,brother1 our ,comforter4 ,converted the ,regular ,way ,i never yet knew a man converted just in the time and manner he expected to be4 ,i have heard people say1 ,well1 if ever ,i am converted1 it won't be in a ,methodist church2 you won't catch me there4 ,i never knew a man say that but1 at last1 if converted at all1 it was in a ,methodist church4 ,in ,scotland a man was converted at one of our meetings--an employer4 ,he was very anxious that all his employes should be reached1 and he used to send them one by one to the meetings4 ,but there was one employe that wouldn't come4 ,we are all more or less troubled with stubbornness2 and the moment this man found that his employer wanted him to go to the meetings1 he made up his mind he wouldn't go4 ,if he was going to be converted1 he said1 he was going to be converted by some ordained minister2 he was not going to any meeting that was conducted by unordained ,americans4 ,he believed in conversion1 but he was going to be converted the regular way4 ,he believed in the regular ,presbyterian ,church of ,scotland1 and that was the place for him to be converted4 ,the employer tried every way he could to get him to attend the meetings1 but he wouldn't come4 ,after we left that town and went away up to ,inverness1 the employer had some business up there1 and he sent this employe to attend to it1 in the hope that he would attend some of our meetings4 ,one night1 as ,i was preaching on the bank of a river1 ,i happened to take for my text the words of ,naaman3 ,i thought2 ,i thought4 ,i was trying to take men's thoughts up and to show the difference between their thoughts and ,god's thoughts4 ,this man happened to be walking along the bank of the river4 ,he saw a great crowd1 and heard some one talking1 and he wondered to himself what that man was talking about4 ,he didn't know who was there1 so he drew up to the crowd1 and listened4 ,he heard the sermon1 and became convicted and converted right there4 ,then he inquired who was the preacher1 and he found out it was the very man that he said he would not hear--the man he disliked4 ,the very man he had been talking against was the very man ,god used to convert him4 ,crazy from ,sin ,i was once preaching in ,chicago1 and a woman who was nearly out of her mind came to me4 ,you know there are some people who mock at religious meetings1 and say that religion drives people mad4 ,it is sin that drives people mad4 ,it is the want of ,christ that sinks people into despair4 ,this was the woman's story3 ,she had a family of children4 ,one of her neighbors had died1 and her husband had brought home a little child4 ,she said1 ,i don't want the child1 but her husband said1 ,you must take it and look after it4 ,she said she had enough to do with her own1 and she told her husband to take that child away4 ,but he would not4 ,she confessed that she tried to starve the child2 but it lingered on4 ,one night it cried all night2 ,i suppose it wanted food4 ,at last she took the clothes and threw them over the child and smothered it4 ,no one saw her2 no one knew anything about it4 ,the child was buried4 ,years had passed away1 and she said3 ,i hear the voice of that child day and night4 ,it has driven me nearly mad4 ,no one saw the act2 but ,god saw it1 and this retribution followed it4 ,history is full of these things4 ,you need not go to the ,bible to find it out4 ,don't ,swear6 ,i was greatly amazed not long ago1 in talking to a man who thought he was a ,christian1 to find that once in a while1 when he got angry1 he would swear4 ,i said3 ,my friend1 ,i don't see how you can tear down with one hand what you are trying to build up with the other4 ,i don't see how you can profess to be a child of ,god and let those words come out of your lips4 ,he replied3 ,mr4 ,moody1 if you knew me1 you would understand4 ,i have a very quick temper4 ,i inherited it from my father and mother1 and it is uncontrollable but my swearing comes only from the lips4 ,when ,god said1 ,i will not hold him guiltless that takes ,my name in vain1 ,he meant what ,he said1 and ,i don't believe any one can be a true child of ,god who takes the name of ,god in vain4 ,the ,true ,sheep ,knows ,i tell you the true sheep know a true shepherd4 ,i got up in ,scotland once and quoted a passage of ,scripture a little different from what it was in the ,bible1 and an old woman crept up and said3 ,mr4 ,moody1 you said----4 ,i might make forty misquotations in an ordinary audience1 and no one would tell me about them4 ,like two lawyers3 one said in court that the other didn't know the ,lord's ,prayer4 ,the other said he did3 ,now ,i lay me down to sleep4 ,well1 the first said1 ,i give it up4 ,i did not think you knew it4 ,didn't either one of them know it1 you see4 ,the ,father ,knew ,best ,dr4 ,arnot1 one of the greatest ,scotch divines1 was in this country before he died4 ,his mother died when he was a little boy only three weeks old1 and there was a large family of ,arnots4 ,i suppose they missed the tenderness and love of the mother4 ,they got the impression that their father was very stern and rigid1 and that he had a great many laws and rules4 ,one rule was1 that the children should never climb trees4 ,when the neighbors found out that the ,arnot children could not climb trees1 they began to tell them about the wonderful things they could see from the tops of the trees4 ,well1 tell a boy of twelve years that he mustn't climb a tree1 and he will get up that tree some way4 ,and so the ,arnot children were all the time teasing their father to let them climb the tree2 but the old sire said3 ,no4 ,one day he was busy reading his paper1 and the boys said3 ,father is reading his paper4 ,let's slip down into the lot and climb a tree4 ,one of the little fellows stood on the top of the fence to see that father did not catch them4 ,when his brother got up on the first branch1 he said3 ,what do you see8 ,why6 ,i don't see anything4 ,then go higher2 you haven't got high enough4 ,so up he went higher1 and again the little boy asked3 ,well1 what do you see now8 ,i don't see anything4 ,you aren't high enough2 go higher4 ,and the little fellow went up as high as he could go1 but he slipped1 and down he came1 and broke his leg4 ,willie said he tried to get him into the house1 but he couldn't do it4 ,he had to tell his father all about it4 ,he said he was scared nearly out of his wits4 ,he thought his father would be very angry4 ,but his father just threw aside the paper1 and started for the lot4 ,when he got there1 he picked the boy up in his arms1 and brought him up to the house4 ,then he sent for the doctor4 ,and ,willie said he got a new view of that father4 ,he found out the reason why that father was so stern4 ,he said the moment that boy got hurt1 no mother could have been more loving and gentle4 ,my dear friends1 there is not one commandment that has been given us which has not been for our highest and best interest4 ,there isn't a commandment that hasn't come from the loving heart of ,god1 and what ,he wants is to have us give up that which is going to mar our happiness in this life1 and in the life to come4 ,help ,yourself6 ,when ,i was out on the ,pacific coast1 in ,california1 some years ago1 ,i was the guest of a man that had a large vineyard and a large orchard4 ,one day he said to me3 ,moody1 while you are my guest ,i want you to make yourself perfectly at home1 and if there is anything in the orchard or in the vineyard you would like1 help yourself4 ,well1 when ,i wanted an orange1 ,i did not go to an orange tree and pray the oranges to fall into my pocket2 but ,i walked up to a tree1 reached out my hand1 and took the oranges4 ,he said ,take1 and ,i took4 ,god says1 ,there is my ,son2 take ,him as your ,saviour4 ,the wages of sin is death2 but the gift of ,god is eternal life4 ,the ,rich ,husband ,there was a shop-girl in ,chicago1 a few years ago4 ,one day she could not have bought five dollars' worth of anything2 the next day she could go and buy a thousand dollar's worth of whatever she wanted4 ,what made the difference8 ,why1 she had married a rich husband2 that was all4 ,she had received him1 and of course all he had became hers4 ,and so we can have all1 if we only receive ,christ4 ,settle ,it ,now6 ,some years ago1 in one of the mining districts of ,england1 a young man attended one of our meetings and refused to go from the place till he had found peace in the ,savior4 ,the next day he went down into the pit1 and the coal fell in upon him4 ,when they took him out1 he was broken and mangled1 and had only two or three minutes of life left in him4 ,his friends gathered about him1 saw his lips moving1 and1 bending down to catch his words1 heard him say3 ,it was a good thing ,i settled it last night4 ,settle it now1 my friends1 once for all4 ,begin now to confess your sins1 and pray the ,lord to remember you4 ,he will make you an heir of ,his kingdom1 if you will accept the gift of salvation4 ,the ,true ,source of ,joy ,god doesn't ask us to rejoice over nothing2 ,he gives us ground for our joy4 ,what would you think of a man who seemed very happy to-day and full of joy1 and couldn't tell you what made him so8 ,suppose ,i should meet a man on the street1 and he was so full of joy that he should get hold of both my hands and say3 ,bless the ,lord1 ,i am so full of joy6 ,what makes you so full of joy8 ,well1 ,i don't know4 ,you don't know6 ,no1 ,i don't2 but ,i am so joyful that ,i just want to get out of the flesh4 ,what makes you feel so joyful8 ,well1 ,i don't know4 ,would we not think such a person unreasonable8 ,but there are a great many people who want to feel that they are ,christians before they are ,christians2 they want the ,christian's experience before they become ,christians2 they want to have the joy of the ,lord before they receive ,jesus ,christ4 ,but this is not the ,gospel order4 ,he brings joy when ,he comes1 and we cannot have joy apart from ,him4 ,he is the author of it1 and we find our joy in ,him4 ,the ,meanest ,kind of ,murderers ,when ,i was in ,england in #ahib1 ,i met a gentleman who claimed that they were ahead of us in the respect they had for the law4 ,we hang our murderers1 he said1 but there isn't one out of twenty in your country that is hung4 ,i said1 ,you are greatly mistaken1 for they walk about these two countries unhung4 ,what do you mean8 ,i will tell you what ,i mean1 ,i said2 the man that comes into my house and runs a dagger into my heart for my money is a prince compared with a son that takes five years to kill me and the wife of my bosom4 ,a young man who comes home night after night drunk1 and when his mother remonstrates1 curses her gray hairs1 and kills her by inches1 is the blackest kind of a murderer4 ,where your ,treasure ,is ,you can soon tell where a man's treasure is by his talk4 ,if it is in heaven1 he will not be long with you before he's talking about heaven2 his heart is there1 and so his speech isn't long in running there1 too4 ,if his heart is in money1 he will soon have you deep in talk about mines1 speculation1 stocks1 bank rate1 and so on4 ,if his heart is in lands1 it won't be long before he's talking about real estate1 improvements1 houses1 and so on4 ,always the same1 wherever a man's heart is1 there his tongue will be sure to go4 ,some one in ,england said1 if you see a man's goods and furniture come down by the luggage train1 you're pretty sure he'll be down by the next passenger train2 he won't be long after2 he'll follow his goods4 ,and so it is with heaven2 if your treasure is on before you1 you'll be wanting to follow it2 you'll be glad to be on the road thither as soon as possible4 ,why his ,life was ,spared ,two ,americans who were crossing the ,atlantic met on ,sunday night to sing hymns in the cabin4 ,as they sang the hymn1 ,jesus1 ,lover of my ,soul1 one of them heard an exceedingly rich and beautiful voice behind him4 ,he looked around1 and although he did not know the face he thought that he recognized the voice4 ,so when the music ceased he turned around and asked the man if he had not been in the ,civil ,war4 ,the man replied that he had been a ,confederate soldier4 ,were you at such a place on such a night8 asked the first4 ,yes1 he said1 and a curious thing happened that night2 this hymn recalled it to my mind4 ,i was on sentry duty on the edge of a wood4 ,it was a dark night and very cold1 and ,i was a little frightened because the enemy were supposed to be very near at hand4 ,i felt very homesick and miserable1 and about midnight1 when everything was very still1 ,i was beginning to feel very weary and thought that ,i would comfort myself by praying and singing a hymn4 ,i remember singing this hymn-- ',all my trust on ,thee is stayed1 ,all my help from ,thee ,i bring4 ,cover my defenceless head ,with the shadow of ,thy wing4' ,after ,i had sung those words a strange peace came down upon me1 and through the long night ,i remember having felt no more fear4 ,now1 said the other man1 listen to my story4 ,i was a ,union soldier1 and was in the wood that night with a party of scouts4 ,i saw you standing up1 although ,i didn't see your face1 and my men had their rifles focused upon you waiting the word to fire1 but when you sang out-- ',cover my defenceless head ,with the shadow of ,thy wing4' ,i said1 ',boys1 put down your rifles2 we will go home4' ,i couldn't kill you after that4 ,the ,sinner's ,heart ,when ,i was in ,dublin some years ago ,i got up to go to an early meeting1 and found the servants had not opened the front door2 so ,i pulled back a bolt1 but ,i could not get the door open4 ,then ,i turned a key1 but the door would not open4 ,then ,i found there was another bolt at the top and another bolt at the bottom4 ,still the door would not open4 ,then ,i found there was a bar1 and then ,i found a night-lock4 ,in all ,i found five or six different fastenings4 ,i am afraid that door represents every sinner's heart4 ,the door of his heart is double-locked1 double-bolted1 and double-barred4 ,oh1 my friends1 pull back the bolts1 and let the ,king of glory in6 ,nothing ,small ,there are a great many different ways of doing good4 ,a lady once visited a hospital1 and noticed with what pleasure the patients would smell and look at the flowers sent to them4 ,said she3 ,if ,i had known that a bunch of flowers would do so much good1 ,i would have sent some from home4 ,as soon as she got home1 she sent some flowers out of her garden4 ,it was a little thing--a bouquet of flowers4 ,it might be a very insignificant work--very small2 but if it was done in the right spirit1 ,god accepted it4 ,a cup of water given in ,his name is accepted as given to ,himself4 ,nothing that is done for ,god is small4 ,an ,anecdote about ,tennyson ,it is said that ,tennyson once asked an old ,christian woman if there was any news4 ,why1 ,mr4 ,tennyson1 she replied1 there's only one piece of news that ,i know1 and that is--,christ died for all men4 ,that is old news1 and good news1 and new news1 ,tennyson responded4 ,on ,satan's ,ground ,there is a legend that the ,apostle ,john was much distressed over the fall of a young convert4 ,he summoned ,satan before him1 and reproached him for ruining so good a youth4 ,i found your good youth on my ground1 said ,satan2 so ,i took him4 ,the only safe course is to avoid temptation altogether4 ,two ,bidding for the ,soul ,there are two who are bidding for your soul and mine--the ,lord ,jesus and ,satan4 ,satan bids1 and he offers that which he cannot give4 ,he is a liar1 and has been from the foundation of the world4 ,i pity the man who is living on the promises of the devil4 ,he will never satisfy4 ,but the ,lord ,jesus is able to give all that ,he offers4 ,and what does ,he offer8 ,he offers peace and joy and comfort that the world knows not of4 ,he offers eternal life in the kingdom of ,god4 ,he offers a seat in ,his mansions4 ,we are to sit with ,him upon ,his throne4 ,may ,god help you to make a right choice6 ,make up your mind you will not rest until the great question of eternity is settled1 until you have crossed the borderland1 and pressed into the kingdom of ,god4 ,tried and ,proven ,i knew an old lady that marked in the margin of her ,bible1 opposite the promises4 ,t4 ,p42 ,t4 for tried1 and ,p4 for proven4 ,what we want is to try the ,bible and see if it is not true4 ,the ,prairie ,fire ,out in the ,western country1 in the autumn1 when men go hunting1 and there has not been any rain for months1 sometimes the prairie grass catches fire1 and there comes up a very strong wind1 and the flames just roll along twenty feet high1 and travel at the rate of thirty or forty miles an hour1 consuming man and beast4 ,when the hunters see it coming1 what do they do8 ,they know they cannot run as fast as the fire can run4 ,not the fleetest horse can escape4 ,they just take a match and light the grass around them1 and let the flames sweep1 and then they get into the burnt district and stand safe4 ,they hear the flames roar as they come along1 they see death coming toward them1 but they do not fear1 they do not tremble1 because the fire has swept over the place where they are1 and there is no danger4 ,there is nothing for the fire to burn4 ,there is one mountain that the wrath of ,god has swept over--that is1 ,mount ,calvary2 and the fire spent its fury upon the bosom of the ,son of ,god4 ,take your stand by the cross1 and you will be safe for time and eternity4 ,perfect ,order ,a good many people are afraid of doing anything out of the regular lines--of doing anything out of order4 ,now1 you will find perfect order in a cemetery4 ,you will find perfect order where there is death4 ,where there is life you will find something out of order4 ,is your ,soul ,insured8 ,pa1 said a little boy as he climbed to his father's knee1 and looked into his face as earnestly as if he understood the importance of the subject1 pa1 is your soul insured8 ,what are you thinking about1 my son8 replied the agitated father4 ,why do you ask that question8 ,why1 pa1 ,i heard ,uncle ,george say that you had your house insured1 and your life insured2 but he didn't believe you had thought of your soul1 and he was afraid you would lose it2 won't you get it insured right away8 ,the father leaned his head on his hand1 and was silent4 ,he owned broad acres of land that were covered with a bountiful produce2 his barns were even now filled with plenty1 his buildings were all well covered by insurance2 and as if that would not suffice for the maintenance of his wife and only child in case of his decease1 he had1 the day before1 taken a life-policy for a large amount2 yet not one thought had he given to his own immortal soul4 ,on that which was to waste away and become part and parcel of its native dust he had spared no pains2 but for that which was to live on and on through the long ages of eternity he had made no provision4 ,what shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul8 ,memory ,i have been twice at the point of death4 ,i was drowning once1 and just as ,i was going down the third time ,i was rescued4 ,in the twinkling of an eye my whole life came flashing across my mind4 ,i cannot tell you how it was4 ,i cannot tell you how a whole life can be crowded into a second of time2 but everything ,i had done from my earliest childhood--it all came flashing across my mind4 ,and ,i believe that when ,god touches the secret spring of memory1 every one of our sins will come back1 and if they have not been blotted out by the blood of the ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 they will haunt us as eternal ages roll on4 ,we talk about our forgetting1 but we cannot forget if ,god says ,remember4 ,we talk about the recording angel keeping the record of our life4 ,i have an idea that when we get to heaven1 or into eternity1 we will find that recording angel has been ourselves4 ,god will make every one of us keep our own record2 these memories will keep the record1 and when ,god shall say1 ,son1 remember1 it will all flash across our mind4 ,it won't be ,god who will condemn us2 it will be ourselves4 ,we shall condemn ourselves1 and we shall stand before ,god speechless4 ,there is a man in prison4 ,he has been there five years4 ,ask that man what makes the prison so terrible to him4 ,ask him if it is the walls and the iron gates--ask him if it is his hard work1 and he will tell you no2 he will tell you what makes the prison so terrible to him is memory2 and ,i have an idea that if we got down into the lost world1 we would find that is what makes hell so terrible--the remembrance that they once heard the ,gospel1 that they once had ,christ offered to them1 that they once had the privilege of being saved1 but they made light of the ,gospel1 they neglected salvation1 they rejected the offer of mercy1 and now if they would accept it they could not4 ,balaam's ,ass ,a friend of mine was going back to ,scotland1 and he heard a couple of these little modern philosophers discussing the ,bible4 ,one said3 ,the ,bible says that ,balaam's ass spoke4 ,now1 ,i am a scientific man1 and ,i have taken the pains to examine an ass's mouth1 and it is so formed that it couldn't speak4 ,he was going to toss the whole ,bible over because ,balaam's ass couldn't speak4 ,my friend said he stood it just as long as he could1 and finally he said3 ,ah1 man1 you make an ass1 and ,i will make him speak4 ,the idea that the ,god who made the ass couldn't speak through his mouth6 ,did you ever hear such stuff8 ,and yet this was one of your modern philosophers6 ,the ,border ,apple-,tree ,if you want real peace and rest to your soul1 keep separate from the world4 ,i remember when ,i was a boy in ,northfield1 right near the old red schoolhouse there was an apple-tree that bore the earliest apples of any tree in town4 ,they had a law in that town that fruit on a tree overhanging the street belonged to the public1 and any fruit on the other side of the fence belonged to the property-holders4 ,half that apple-tree was over in the street1 and it got more old brooms and brickbats and handles than any other tree in town4 ,we boys used to watch to see when an apple was getting red4 ,i never got a ripe apple from that tree in my life1 and ,i don't believe any one else ever did4 ,you never went by that tree that you didn't see a lot of broom-handles and clubs up there4 ,now1 take a lot of ,christians who want to live right on the line1 with one foot in the world and one foot in the church4 ,they get more clubs than any one else4 ,the world clubs them4 ,they say1 ,i don't believe in that man's religion4 ,and the church clubs them4 ,they get clubs both sides4 ,it is a good deal better to keep just as far from the line as you can if you want power4 ,bad ,company ,a friend of mine said he had a beautiful canary bird2 he thought it was the sweetest singer they had ever had4 ,spring came on1 and he felt it was a pity to keep the poor bird in the house1 so he put it under a tree right in front of his house4 ,he said before he knew it a lot of these little ,english sparrows got under that tree 7and you know they cannot sing any more than ,i can1 and ,i don't know one note from another71 and went1 ,chirp1 chirp1 chirp4 ,before he knew it1 that little canary had lost all its sweet notes4 ,it had got into bad company4 ,after he found out that he had made a mistake1 he took the bird into the house1 but it kept up that ,chirp1 chirp1 chirp4 ,he bought another bird1 but the canary nearly ruined it4 ,he said that bird never got back its sweet notes4 ,now1 don't you know lots of ,christian people who had a fine testimony several years ago1 but they have lost their witness1 and all they do now is talk1 talk1 talk1 talk8 ,why8 ,because they are out of communion with ,god1 and have lost their witness4 ,hitch ,on and ,cut ,behind ,some one tells of an incident that happened in a ,new ,england town the other day4 ,all the boys were sleighing4 ,a big sleigh--we call it a pung up there--was being driven through the streets by an old man who looked like ,santa ,claus4 ,he was calling out to the small boys to hitch on1 for a pung is like a 'bus1 it always holds one more4 ,there were already about twenty rollicking boys hitched on1 when one little fellow dropped off behind4 ,he tried1 but couldn't catch up again1 and pretty soon he began to look out for another chance for a ride4 ,a man's sleigh was standing near by1 and the boy began to eye the man4 ,when the man in the sleigh started off1 the little fellow hitched on behind1 and the man grabbed his whip and struck him directly in the eye4 ,it looked as if the eye had been put out1 but it wasn't4 ,now1 that's the way we go through this world4 ,some say1 ,hitch on1 hitch on2 others1 ,cut behind1 cut behind4 ,the hitch-on people fill the churches1 and the cut-behind ones empty them4 ,known by ,name ,a friend of mine was in ,syria1 and he found a shepherd that kept up the old custom of naming his sheep4 ,my friend said he wouldn't believe that the sheep knew him when he called them by name4 ,so he said to the shepherd3 ,i wish you would just call one or two4 ,the shepherd said1 ,carl4 ,the sheep stopped eating and looked up4 ,the shepherd called out1 ,come here4 ,the sheep came1 and stood looking up into his face4 ,he called another1 and another1 and there they stood looking up at the shepherd4 ,how can you tell them apart8 ,oh1 there are no two alike4 ,see1 that sheep toes in a little2 this sheep is a little bit squint-eyed2 that sheep has a black spot on its nose4 ,my friend found that he knew every one of his sheep by their failings4 ,he didn't have a perfect one in his flock4 ,i suppose that is the way the ,lord knows you and me4 ,there is a man that is covetous2 he wants to grasp the whole world4 ,he wants a shepherd to keep down that spirit4 ,there is a woman down there who has an awful tongue2 she keeps the whole neighborhood stirred up4 ,there is a woman over there who is deceitful1 terribly so4 ,she needs the care of a shepherd to keep her from deceit1 for she will ruin all her children2 they will all turn out just like their mother4 ,there is a father over there who wouldn't swear for all the world before his children1 but sometimes he gets provoked in his business and swears before he knows it4 ,doesn't he need a shepherd's care8 ,i would like to know if there is a man or woman on earth who doesn't need the care of a shepherd4 ,haven't we all got failings8 ,if you really want to know what your failings are1 you can find some one who can point them out4 ,god would never have sent ,christ into the world if we didn't need ,his care4 ,we are as weak and foolish as sheep4 ,the ,right ,time for ,action ,a man was always telling his servant that he was going to do a great thing for him4 ,i am going to remember you in my will4 ,sambo got his expectations up very high4 ,when the man came to die1 it was found that all he had willed ,sambo was to be buried in the family lot4 ,that was the big thing1 you know4 ,sambo said he wished he had given him ten dollars1 and let the lot go4 ,if you want to show kindness to a person1 show it to him while you are living4 ,i heard a man say that he didn't want people to throw bouquets to him after he was dead1 and say1 ,there1 smell them4 ,now1 this is the time for action4 ,i have got so tired and sick of this splitting hairs over theology4 ,man1 let us go out and get the fallen up4 ,lift them up toward ,god and heaven4 ,we want a practical kind of ,christianity4 ,criticising the ,sermon ,very often a man will hear a hundred good things in a sermon1 but there may be one thing that strikes him as a little out of place1 and he will go home and sit down at the table and talk right out before his children and magnify that one wrong thing1 and not say a word about the hundred good things that were said4 ,that is what people do who criticise4 ,a ,reminiscence ,i remember blaming my mother for sending me to church on the ,sabbath4 ,on one occasion the preacher had to send some one into the gallery to wake me up4 ,i thought it was hard to have to work in the field all the week1 and then be obliged to go to church and hear a sermon ,i didn't understand4 ,i thought ,i wouldn't go to church any more when ,i got away from home2 but ,i had got so in the habit of going that ,i couldn't stay away4 ,after one or two ,sabbaths1 back again to the house of ,god ,i went4 ,there ,i first found ,christ1 and ,i have often said since3 ,mother1 ,i thank you for making me go to the house of ,god when ,i didn't want to go4 ,transplanting the ,lily ,it is easy to go when the time comes4 ,there are no ropes thrown out to pull us ashore2 there are no ladders let down to pull us up4 ,christ comes and takes us by the hand1 and says3 ',you have had enough of this4 ,come up higher6' ,do you hurt a lily when you pluck it8 ,is there any rudeness when ,jesus touches the cheek1 and the red rose of health whitens into the lily of immortal purity and gladness8--,talmage4 ,election ,how many men fold their arms and say3 ,if ,i am one of the elect1 ,i will be saved1 and if ,i ain't1 ,i won't4 ,no use of your bothering about it4 ,why don't some of these merchants say3 ,if ,god is going to make me a successful merchant in ,chicago1 ,i will be one whether ,i like it or not1 and if ,he isn't ,i won't4 ,if you are sick1 and a doctor prescribes for you1 don't take the medicine--throw it out the door4 ,it does not matter1 for if ,god has decreed you are going to die1 you will2 if ,he hasn't1 you will get better4 ,if you use that argument you may as well not walk home from this tabernacle4 ,if ,god has said you'll get home1 you'll get home--you'll fly through the air4 ,i have an idea that the ,lord ,jesus saw how men were going to stumble over this doctrine1 so after ,he had been thirty or forty years in heaven ,he came down and spoke to ,john4 ,one ,lord's day in ,patmos1 ,he said to him3 ,write these things to the churches4 ,john kept on writing4 ,his pen flew very fast4 ,and then the ,lord1 when it was nearly finished1 said1 ,john1 before you close the book1 put in one more invitation4 ',the ,spirit and the bride say1 ,come4 ,and let him that heareth say1 ,come4 ,and let him that is athirst1 come4 ,and ,,whosoever ,,will1 let him take the water of life freely4' ,the ,mysteries of the ,bible ,dr4 ,talmage tells the story that one day while he was bothering his theological professor with questions about the mysteries of the ,bible1 the latter turned on him and said3 ,mr4 ,talmage1 you will have to let ,god know some things you don't4 ,the ,little ,lone ,one ,i sometimes think if an angel were to wing its way to heaven1 and tell them that there was one little child here on earth--it might be a shoeless1 coatless street ,arab--with no one to lead it to the cross of ,christ1 and if ,god were to call the angels round ,his throne and ask them to go and spend--aye1 fifty years1 in teaching that child1 there would not be an angel in heaven but would respond gladly to the appeal4 ,we should see even ,gabriel saying1 ,let me go and win that soul to ,christ4 ,we should see ,paul buckling on his old armor again1 and saying1 ,let me go back again to earth1 that ,i may have the joy of leading that little one to his ,saviour4 ,ah6 we need rousing2 there is too much apathy amongst professing ,christians4 ,let us pray ,god that ,he may send ,his ,holy ,spirit to inspire us with fresh energy and zeal to do ,his work4 ,doubting ,castle ,it is the privilege of every child of ,god to know that he is saved1 and yet ,i find ever so many people living in ,doubting ,castle4 ,why1 it is salvation by doubts nowadays1 instead of by faith2 there are so few that dare to say1 ,i know that my ,redeemer liveth2 ,i know in whom ,i have believed4 ,we find most ,christians nowadays shivering and trembling from head to foot--they do not know whether they are saved or not4 ,faith ,bishop ,ryle has very well likened faith to a root whose flower is assurance4 ,to have the latter1 he says1 it is necessary that there must first be the hidden source of faith4 ,faith is the simplest and most universal experience in the world4 ,call it by whatever name you may1 confidence1 trust1 or belief1 it is inseparable from the human race4 ,the first sign of a dawning intelligence in the mind is the exercise of the infant's faith toward those it knows1 and its fear toward those it does not know4 ,we cannot even remember when we first began to have faith4 ,confessing ,christ at ,home ,i was preaching in ,chicago to a hall full of women one ,sunday afternoon1 and after the meeting was over a lady came to me and said she wanted to talk to me4 ,she said she would accept ,christ1 and after some conversation she went home4 ,i looked for her for a whole week1 but didn't see her until the following ,sunday afternoon4 ,she came and sat down right in front of me1 and her face had such a sad expression4 ,she seemed to have entered into the misery1 instead of the joy1 of the ,lord4 ,after the meeting was over ,i went to her and asked her what the trouble was4 ,she said1 ,oh1 ,mr4 ,moody1 this has been the most miserable week of my life4 ,i asked her if there was any one with whom she had had trouble and whom she could not forgive4 ,she said1 ,no1 not that ,i know of4 ,well1 did you tell your friends about having found the ,saviour8 ,indeed ,i didn't4 ,i have been all the week trying to keep it from them4 ,well1 ,i said1 that is the reason why you have no peace4 ,she wanted to take the crown1 but did not want the cross4 ,my friends1 you must go by the way of ,calvary4 ,if you ever get peace and joy you must get it at the foot of the cross4 ,why1 she said1 if ,i should go home and tell my infidel husband that ,i had found ,christ1 ,i don't know what he would do4 ,i think he would turn me out4 ,well1 ,i said1 go out4 ,she went away1 promising that she would tell him1 timid and pale1 but she did not want another wretched week4 ,she was bound to have peace4 ,the next night ,i gave a lecture to men only1 and in the hall there were eight thousand men and one solitary woman4 ,when ,i got through and went into the inquiry meeting ,i found this lady with her husband4 ,she introduced him to me 7he was a doctor and a very influential man71 and said3 ,he wants to become a ,christian4 ,i took my ,bible and told him all about ,christ1 and he accepted ,him4 ,i said to her after it was all over3 ,it turned out quite differently from what you expected1 didn't it8 ,yes1 she replied2 ,i was never so scared in my life4 ,i expected he would do something dreadful1 but it has turned out so well4 ,she took ,god's way1 and got the joy and peace she sought4 ,how to ,settle the ,theater ,question ,a lady came to me once and said1 ,mr4 ,moody1 ,i wish you would tell me how ,i can become a ,christian4 ,the tears were rolling down her cheeks1 and she was in a very favorable mood4 ,but1 she said1 ,i don't want to be one of your kind4 ,well1 ,i asked1 have ,i got any peculiar kind8 ,what is the matter with my ,christianity8 ,well1 she said1 my father was a doctor1 and had a large practice1 and he used to get so tired that he used to take us to the theater4 ,there was a large family of girls1 and we had tickets for the theaters three or four times a week4 ,i suppose we were there a good deal oftener than we were in church4 ,i am married to a lawyer1 and he has a large practice4 ,he gets so tired that he takes us out to the theater1 and she said1 ,i am far better acquainted with the theater and theater people than with the church and church people1 and ,i don't want to give up the theater4 ,well1 ,i said1 did you ever hear me say anything about theaters8 ,there have been reporters here every day for all the different papers1 and they are giving my sermons verbatim in one paper4 ,have you ever seen anything in the sermons against the theaters8 ,she said1 ,no4 ,well1 ,i said1 ,i have seen you in the audience every afternoon for several weeks1 and have you heard me say anything against theaters8 ,no1 she hadn't4 ,well1 ,i said1 what made you bring them up8 ,why1 ,i supposed you didn't believe in theaters4 ,what made you think that8 ,why1 she said1 do you ever go8 ,no4 ,why don't you go8 ,because ,i have got something better4 ,i would sooner go out into the street and eat dirt than do some of the things ,i used to do before ,i became a ,christian4 ,why6 she said2 ,i don't understand4 ,never mind1 ,i said4 ,when ,jesus ,christ has the preeminence1 you will understand it all4 ,he didn't come down here and say we shouldn't go here and we shouldn't go there1 and lay down a lot of rules1 but ,he laid down great principles4 ,now1 ,he says if you love ,him you will take delight in pleasing ,him4 ,and ,i began to preach ,christ to her4 ,the tears started again4 ,she said3 ,i tell you1 ,mr4 ,moody1 that sermon on the indwelling ,christ yesterday afternoon just broke my heart4 ,i admire ,him1 and ,i want to be a ,christian1 but ,i don't want to give up the theaters4 ,i said1 ,please don't mention them again4 ,i don't want to talk about theaters4 ,i want to talk to you about ,christ4 ,so ,i took my ,bible1 and ,i read to her about ,christ4 ,but she said again1 ,mr4 ,moody1 can ,i go to the theater if ,i become a ,christian8 ,yes1 ,i said1 you can go to the theater just as much as you like if you are a real1 true ,christian1 and can go with ,his blessing4 ,well1 she said1 ,i am glad you are not so narrow-minded as some4 ,she felt quite relieved to think that she could go to the theaters and be a ,christian4 ,but ,i said3 ,if you can go to the theater for the glory of ,god1 keep on going2 only be sure that you go for the glory of ,god4 ,if you are a ,christian you will be glad to do whatever will please ,him4 ,i really think she became a ,christian that day4 ,the burden had gone1 there was joy2 but just as she was leaving me at the door she said3 ,i am not going to give up the theater4 ,in a few days she came back to me and said3 ,mr4 ,moody1 ,i understand all about that theater business now4 ,i went the other night4 ,there was a large party at our house1 and my husband wanted us to go1 and we went2 but when the curtain lifted everything looked so different4 ,i said to my husband1 ',this is no place for me2 this is horrible4 ,i am not going to stay here1 ,i am going home4' ,he said1 ',don't make a fool of yourself4 ,every one has heard that you have been converted in the ,moody meetings1 and if you go out it will be all through fashionable society4 ,i beg of you don't make a fool of yourself by getting up and going out4' ,but ,i said1 ',i have been making a fool of myself all of my life4' ,now1 the theater hadn't changed1 but she had got something better1 and she was going to overcome the world4 ,they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh2 but they that are after the ,spirit1 the things of the ,spirit4 ,when ,christ has the first place in your heart you are going to get victory4 ,just do whatever you know will please ,him4 ,the great objection ,i have to these things is that they get the mastery1 and become a hindrance to spiritual growth4 ,what a ,sister ,can ,do ,i want to say to young ladies1 perhaps you have a godless father or mother1 or a skeptical brother1 who is going down through drink1 and perhaps there is no one who can reach them but you4 ,how many times a godly1 pure young lady has taken the light into some darkened home6 ,many a home might be lit up with the ,gospel if the mothers and daughters would only speak the word4 ,the last time ,mr4 ,sankey and myself were in ,edinburgh1 there were a father1 two sisters1 and a brother1 who used every morning to take the morning paper and pick my sermon to pieces4 ,they were indignant to think that the ,edinburgh people should be carried away with such preaching4 ,one day one of the sisters was going by the hall1 and she thought she would drop in and see what class of people went there4 ,she happened to take a seat by a godly lady1 who said to her3 ,i hope you are interested in this work1 ,she tossed her head and said3 ,indeed ,i am not4 ,i am disgusted with everything ,i have seen and heard4 ,well1 said the lady1 perhaps you came prejudiced4 ,yes1 and the meeting has not removed any of it1 but has rather increased it4 ,i have received a great deal of good from them4 ,there is nothing here for me4 ,i don't see how an intellectual person can be interested4 ,to make a long story short1 she got the young lady to promise to come back4 ,when the meeting broke up1 just a little of the prejudice had worn away4 ,she promised to come back again the next day1 and then she attended three or four more meetings1 and became quite interested4 ,she said nothing to her family1 until finally the burden became too heavy1 and she told them4 ,they laughed at her1 and made her the butt of their ridicule4 ,one day the two sisters were together1 and the other said1 ,now what have you got at those meetings that you didn't have in the first place8 ,i have a peace that ,i never knew of before4 ,i am at peace with ,god1 myself1 and all the world4 ,did you ever have a little war of your own with your neighbors1 in your own family8 ,and she said3 ,i have self-control4 ,you know1 sister1 if you had said half the mean things before ,i was converted that you have said since1 ,i would have been angry and answered back1 but if you remember correctly1 ,i haven't answered once since ,i have been converted4 ,the sister said1 ,you certainly have something that ,i have not4 ,the other told her it was for her1 too1 and she brought the sister to the meetings1 where she found peace4 ,like ,martha and ,mary1 they had a brother but he was a member of the ,university of ,edinburgh4 ,he be converted8 ,he go to these meetings8 ,it might do for women1 but not for him6 ,one night they came home and told him that a chum of his own1 a member of the university1 had stood up and confessed ,christ1 and when he sat down his brother got up and confessed2 and so with the third one4 ,when the young man heard it1 he said3 ,do you mean to tell me that he has been converted8 ,yes4 ,well1 he said1 there must be something in it4 ,he put on his hat and coat1 and went to see his friend ,black4 ,black got him down to the meetings1 and he was converted4 ,we went through to ,glasgow1 and had not been there six weeks when news came that that young man had been stricken down1 and had died4 ,when he was dying he called his father to his bedside and said3 ,wasn't it a good thing that my sisters went to those meetings8 ,won't you meet me in heaven1 father8 ,yes1 my son1 ,i am so glad you are a ,christian2 that is the only comfort that ,i have in losing you4 ,i will become a ,christian1 and will meet you again4 ,i tell this to encourage some sister to go home and carry the message of salvation4 ,it may be that your brother may be taken away in a few months4 ,how one ,man ,treated ,doubts ,a wild and prodigal young man1 who was running a headlong career to ruin came into one of our meetings in ,chicago4 ,whilst endeavoring to bring him to ,christ1 ,i quoted this verse to him3 ,him that cometh unto me ,i will in no wise cast out4 ,i asked him3 ,do you believe ,christ said that8 ,i suppose ,he did4 ,suppose ,he did6 do you believe it8 ,i hope so4 ,hope so6 do you believe it8 ,you do your work1 and the ,lord will do ,his4 ,just come as you are1 and throw yourself upon ,his bosom1 and ,he will not cast you out4 ,this man thought it was too simple and easy4 ,at last light seemed to break in upon him1 and he seemed to find comfort from it4 ,it was past midnight before he got down on his knees1 but down he went1 and was converted4 ,i said3 ,now1 don't think you are going to get out of the devil's territory without trouble4 ,the devil will come to you to-morrow morning and say it was all feeling2 that you only imagined you were accepted by ,god4 ,when he does1 don't fight him with your own opinions1 but fight him with ,john vi4 #cg3 ',him that cometh to ,me ,i will in nowise cast out4' ,let that be 'the sword of the ,spirit4' ,i don't believe that any man ever starts to go to ,christ but the devil strives somehow or other to meet him and trip him up4 ,and even after he has come to ,christ1 the devil tries to assail him with doubts1 and make him believe there is something wrong in it4 ,the struggle came sooner than ,i thought in this man's case4 ,when he was on his way home the devil assailed him4 ,he used this text1 but the devil put this thought into his mind3 ,how do you know ,christ ever said that after all8 ,perhaps the translators made a mistake4 ,into darkness he went again4 ,he was in trouble till about two in the morning4 ,at last he came to this conclusion4 ,said he3 ,i will believe it anyway2 and when ,i get to heaven1 if it isn't true1 ,i will just tell the ,lord ,i didn't make the mistake--the translators made it4 ,use or ,lose ,an ,eastern allegory runs thus3 ,a merchant1 going abroad for a time1 gave respectively to two of his friends two sacks of wheat each1 to take care of against his return4 ,years passed4 ,when he came back1 he applied for them again4 ,the first took him into a storehouse1 and showed him his sacks2 but they were mildewed and worthless4 ,the other led him out into the open country1 and pointed to field after field of waving wheat1 the produce of the two sacks given him4 ,said the merchant3 ,you have been a faithful friend4 ,give me two sacks of that wheat2 the rest shall be thine4 ,let us put to good use the talents ,god has given us4 ,the ,anchored ,boat ,i once heard of two men who were under the influence of liquor4 ,they came down at night to where their boat was tied4 ,they wanted to return home1 so they got in and began to row4 ,they pulled away hard all night1 wondering why they never got to the other side of the bay4 ,when the gray dawn of morning broke1 behold6 they had never loosed the mooring line or raised the anchor6 ,that's just the way with many who are striving to enter the kingdom of heaven4 ,they cannot believe1 because they are tied to this world4 ,cut the cord6 ,confess and forsake your sins6 ,cut the cord6 ,set yourselves free from the clogging weight of earthly things1 and you will soon rise heavenward4 ,not ,much up ,there ,a friend of mine was once taken by an old man to see his riches4 ,he took him to a splendid mansion1 and said1 ,this is all mine4 ,he pointed to a little town1 ,that is mine2 it is called by my name4 ,he pointed to a rolling prairie1 ,that is all mine2 the sun never shone on a finer prairie than that1 so fruitful and rich1 and it's all mine4 ,in another direction he showed him fertile farms extending for thirty miles1 ,these are all mine4 ,he took him into his grand house1 showed him his beautiful pictures1 his costly gold plate1 his jewels1 and still he said1 ,these are all mine4 ,this grand hall ,i have built2 it is called by my name2 there is my insignia on it4 ,and yet ,i was once a poor boy4 ,i have made it all myself4 ,my friend looked at him4 ,well1 you've all this on earth2 but what have you got up there8 ,up where8 said the old man4 ,up in heaven4 ,well1 ,i'm afraid ,i haven't got much up there4 ,ah1 said my friend1 but you've got to die1 to leave this world2 what will you take with you of all these things8 ,you will die a beggar2 for all these riches count as nothing in the kingdom of heaven4 ,you will be a pauper2 for you have no inheritance with the saints above4 ,the poor old man 7he was poor enough in reality1 though rich in all the world's goods7 burst into tears4 ,he had no hope for the future4 ,in four months' time he was dead2 and where is he now8 ,he lived and died without ,god1 and without hope in this world or the next4 ,touching ,that is splendid1 and will want all their friends to go and hear the preacher4 ,but let him touch on their individual sin1 and declare1 as ,nathan did to ,david1 ,thou art the man1 and they say1 ,i do not like that4 ,the preacher has touched a sore place4 ,the ,little ,boy and the ,big ,book ,i like to think of ,christ as a burden bearer4 ,a minister was one day moving his library upstairs4 ,as he was going up with a load of books1 his little boy came in1 and was very anxious to help his father4 ,so his father just told him to go and get an armful1 and bring them upstairs4 ,when the father came back1 he met the little fellow about half-way up1 tugging away at the biggest book in the library4 ,he couldn't manage to carry it up4 ,it was too big4 ,so he sat down and cried4 ,his father found him1 and just took him in his arms1 book and all1 and carried him upstairs4 ,so ,christ will carry you and all your burdens1 if you will but let ,him4 ,the ,invitation to a ,saloon ,opening ,they were going to have a great celebration at the opening of a saloon and billiard hall in ,chicago1 in the northern part of the city1 where ,i lived4 ,it was to be a gateway to death and to hell1 one of the worst places in ,chicago4 ,as a joke they sent me an invitation to go to the opening4 ,i took the invitation1 and went down and saw the two men who had the saloon1 and ,i said3 ,is that a genuine invitation8 ,they said it was4 ,thank you1 ,i said2 ,i will be around1 and if there is anything here ,i don't like ,i may have something to say about it4 ,they said1 ,you are not going to preach1 are you8 ,i may4 ,we don't want you4 ,we won't let you in4 ,how are you going to keep me out8 ,i asked4 ,there is the invitation4 ,we will put a policeman at the door4 ,what is the policeman going to do with that invitation8 ,we won't let you in4 ,well1 ,i said1 ,i will be there4 ,i gave them a good scare1 and then ,i said1 ,i will compromise the matter2 if you two men will get down here and let me pray with you1 ,i will let you off4 ,i got those two rum-sellers down on their knees1 one on one side of me and the other on the other side1 and ,i prayed ,god to save their souls and smite their business4 ,one of them had a ,christian mother1 and he seemed to have some conscience left4 ,after ,i had prayed1 ,i said3 ,how can you do this business8 ,how can you throw this place open to ruin the young men of ,chicago8 ,within three months the whole thing smashed up1 and one of them was converted shortly after4 ,i have never been invited to a saloon since4 ,too ,late6 ,at our church in ,chicago ,i was closing the meeting one day1 when a young soldier got up and entreated the people to decide for ,christ at once4 ,he said he had just come from a dark scene4 ,a comrade of his1 who had enlisted with him1 had a father who was always entreating him to become a ,christian1 and in reply he always said he would when the war was over4 ,at last he was wounded1 and was put into the hospital1 but got worse1 and was gradually sinking4 ,one day1 a few hours before he died1 a letter came from his sister1 but he was too far gone to read it4 ,it was such an earnest letter6 ,the comrade read it to him1 but he did not seem to understand it1 he was so weak1 till it came to the last sentence1 which said3 ,oh1 my dear brother1 when you get this letter1 will you not accept your sister's ,savior8 ,the dying man sprang up from his cot1 and said1 ,what do you say8 what do you say8 ,and then1 falling back on his pillow1 feebly exclaimed1 ,it is too late6 ,it is too late6 ,my
