evidence of the hold that we still have upon the churches1 made all the more conspicuous in these hard times4 ,but these figures do not tell the whole story4 ,the #dj1jjj debt to which we have made frequent reference hitherto is still pending4 ,to this must be added the #ac1jjj debt that came over from last year4 ,only two working months are left4 ,our fiscal year ends with ,september4 ,from month to month we have published the figures4 ,our friends have been able to trace for themselves just how the financial struggle has been maintained4 ,donations from churches and individuals have been kept distinct from legacies1 and comparison made with receipts of the corresponding months in the preceding year4 ,a varying story the figures have had to tell4 ,there is a slave hymn3 ,i'm sometimes up and ,i'm sometimes down1 ,but still my soul is heavenly bound4 ,that has been the case with our feelings as we have followed the rise and fall in the comparisons4 ,but amid all the fluctuations we have had an abiding confidence that before the year ends there will be such a rally by our friends that we shall come out free of debt4 ,are we to be disappointed8 ,we are approaching the time for decisive thought and action4 ,we cannot delay much longer4 ,the figures this month not only show that in the total we are a little behind1 but they also indicate that our reliance for relief must be in the living and not in the dead4 ,we have no large legacies that are available in sight1 and we have no reserve fund on which to draw to avert disaster4 ,can the threatening deficit the past three years has been ,superintendent of our school work1 this month severs his connection officially with the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 ,he goes to take charge of the ,state ,normal ,school at ,whitewater1 ,wis4 ,this is the school in which we found him as a professor1 when we called him to our ranks1 and now we are called to give him up that he may go back to stand at its head4 ,we can ill afford to spare him4 ,he is not only a master in his knowledge of everything connected with schools1 in respect to organization1 discipline and best methods of teaching1 but he is also a man of remarkable executive ability4 ,when he entered our work he certainly came into the kingdom for a day that had been providentially prepared4 ,the work had taken on massive proportions4 ,all over the ,south our schools had been planted4 ,these schools were branches of the same tree2 they had a common trunk and drew their life and spirit from the same soil4 ,but1 separated so far from one another1 as many of them were1 there came to be a felt necessity that some one competent to care for their common interests1 while recognizing at the same time their separate prerogatives and rights1 must be found4 ,multiplied variety necessarily had characterized their development1 and as a consequence1 the unity of their origin and aim had been endangered4 ,that is a law of nature4 ,we had been brought to see and feel this4 ,we looked around to find the man equal to the task involved4 ,it was not easy to find him4 ,we realized the difficulty4 ,our workers realized it4 ,it would not have been strange if we had made a mistake4 ,a rare combination of qualifications was demanded4 ,we believed that ,professor ,salisbury possessed these qualifications4 ,we invited him to take up the work4 ,he accepted4 ,he entered1 and continued in it down to the last moment he held the office1 with all his heart and soul1 and now that he has felt constrained to leave us we are glad1 not only on his account1 but also on our own1 unreservedly to bear testimony that1 we believe1 no mistake was made when he was appointed4 ,he has rendered the ,american ,missionary ,association signal service1 and when we remember how intimately the work of this ,association is connected with the welfare of the nation1 it is not too much to say that he has in these three years of hard and faithful work rendered signal service to the whole land4 ,our school work has steadily grown in efficiency and power ever since he took it up1 and the general cause of education all over the ,south has been benefited by the impulse his teaching1 character and devotion have inspired4 ,not alone the colored schools1 but the white schools as well1 have been the gainers4 ,by his lectures and instruction given in ,normal ,institutes1 and by his personal contact with the leading educators of the ,south1 he has brought in no small degree a knowledge of the most approved methods of teaching to the attention of ,southern educators1 and has done much to develop a sentiment in favor of popular education among the people4 ,it is a high compliment to his ability the ,state of ,wisconsin pays in calling him back and investing him with the principalship of the same school from which we took him2 and1 as we reluctantly return him1 we can wish for him no greater blessing than that the same success may attend his labors in the field to which he goes that1 with ,god's favor1 has so abundantly crowned him in the one he leaves4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the king is dead2 long live the king4 ,we have just been speeding the parting guest4 ,we now turn to welcome the coming4 ,that we have done the speeding reluctantly does not abate the heartiness with which we now do the welcoming4 ,to such an extent had our church work been systematized under ,superintendent ,roy1 and our school work under ,superintendent ,salisbury1 that when we had to transfer the one to the ,western ,district ,secretaryship1 and had to lose the other1 we felt that the two positions might possibly be merged4 ,the very success of these workers had made this practicable4 ,not that the work of the two could be done by any one man4 ,they are not that kind of men1 as our constituents well know4 ,they are both of them drivers4 ,it is almost enough to discourage any ordinary man to see either of them work4 ,a hard position to fill surely4 ,we are glad to say that after a good deal of searching we believe we have found the man4 ,we have appointed ,rev4 ,c4 ,j4 ,ryder1 of ,medina1 ,ohio1 as our ,field ,superintendent4 ,he accepts the appointment and will take up the work the first of ,september4 ,he will be located at ,cincinnati1 from which point1 by reason of its central location and excellent railroad facilities1 he will be able to reach out in all directions4 ,a successful pastor--an able preacher1 having had experience and success as a teacher1 and in addition possessing already considerable knowledge of our work1 he will enter the field with the opinions of all those who know him best united that he will make it a success4 ,we welcome him to the ranks of our fellowship in the glorious cause of bringing the light of the gospel and ,christian education to the poor2 we welcome him to the rich joy the expressions of their heart-felt gratitude will cause him to experience4 ,we welcome him to the love and confidence and co-operation of our missionaries whose hearts will be made glad by his visits and whose toil will be made lighter by his counsel2 above all we welcome him to the rewards ,god bestows upon those who are ready1 if need be1 to surrender everything that they may follow ,christ4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,higher ,,education ,,of ,,the ,,negro4 ,,rev4 ,w4 ,w4 ,,patton1 ,d4 ,d4 ,many strangely adopt this wrong principle with regard to the negro race--that they are to be treated not simply as men1 but as colored men1 as members of a peculiar and inferior race1 about whom one must not reason as he would about others1 and especially about white men4 ,one writer thinks that his eyes have just been opened to the truth1 for he says3 ,like most ,northern men1 ,i have made the mistake of judging the black by the standard of the white4 ,a freer intercourse with him and a closer study of his characteristics have shown me that he is not to be so judged1 and that the training adapted to the white man is not adapted to the black4 ,in any reasonable sense of these words1 we regard them as involving the same error which so long hindered emancipation--the idea that negroes could not be expected to act as would other men in the same circumstances4 ,it used to be argued that freed negroes would refuse to labor1 and would simply plunder and massacre4 ,the history of the last twenty years1 and the enormous crops raised at the ,south since the war1 have disproved this absurdity1 although the writer quoted still has his doubts1 for he says of the negro3 ,we must take him as he is2 and because we have not done this1 his freedom1 which has been of inestimable value to the ,southern white man1 has until now been a most questionable blessing to the negro6 ,one who can utter that doubt has some defect of vision1 which disqualifies him from reaching safe conclusions respecting the colored race4 ,now1 every race has certain peculiarities1 and so has every nation1 and to these we have a degree of regard in our intercourse with them4 ,in minor matters1 we remember1 in our dealings1 that this man is a ,scotchman1 and that man a ,welshman1 and that a ,frenchman1 and that a ,german4 ,but in great questions of principle and method touching humanity1 such as education and religion1 we drop race and nation1 and act upon simple manhood4 ,if we do not1 we are sure to err4 ,the true idea in the case before us is1 not to think perpetually of the black skin and the ,african blood1 but of the man1 and to use with the negro precisely the measures which should be used with white men in the same circumstances of ignorance and poverty1 and with the same responsibilities as citizens4 ,and it is singular that objectors to our work do not seem to be aware that the precise difficulty which they emphasize respecting the black masses at the ,south has been equally emphasized by others respecting the white masses at the ,north4 ,the complaint everywhere heard in the ,northern ,states is1 that the common people are being so highly educated as to become dissatisfied with labor4 ,the young men and young women refuse to work at manual industries1 and take to trade and the professions1 or else become dissipated idlers4 ,hence attempts are making to attach industrial education to our common schools4 ,why1 then1 talk of the peculiarities of the negro in this matter8 ,there are none4 ,he simply shares in the temptations which beset all races1 and we must reason accordingly1 and plan alike for the masses of the people1 black and white4 ,one should avoid extreme and disproportionate statements and implications4 ,the same writer runs a tilt against all education for the negro above the most rudimental1 and says3 ,i have failed to see one who has been made a better man or a better citizen by this higher education2 on the contrary1 ,i know of very many who have been morally and socially ruined by it4 ,we are sorry that his acquaintance has been so unfortunate with this class4 ,others have had the happiness to know scores and hundreds of well-educated colored people who are doing great credit to their race as ministers1 physicians1 editors1 lawyers1 teachers and authors4 ,to one of these1 a graduate of a theological institution1 aided by this ,association1 the ,district ,attorney in the part of ,virginia where he now lives1 recently addressed a letter of thanks for his having wrought a moral revolution in that county1 saying3 ,your boldness in condemning the wrong and asserting and approving the right has not only impressed the colored1 and influenced their conduct in the right direction1 but it has at the same time won for you the confidence and esteem of all the thinking portion of the white race1 who are interested in good government and a well-ordered and law-abiding community 444 for which this community ought to be profoundly grateful4 ,and this man is also ebon black4 ,and here we would correct the impression that a large disproportion of the negroes are receiving a higher education4 ,the idea is given out that a great mistake has been made by the societies and philanthropists that are seeking the elevation of the freedmen4 ,it would relieve the quite unnecessary alarm of objectors if they would consult the ,united ,states census for the statistics of the negro population1 and then compare with its six millions of colored people the few thousands of them found in the colleges1 academies1 high schools1 theological seminaries1 medical and law schools of the land4 ,probably not more than one negro in a thousand is receiving anything beyond the very simplest instruction4 ,surely1 then1 no great harm can yet have been done1 or is likely to be done1 for many years to come4 ,and yet1 long before the objectors had spoken1 these same educators had begun to add industrial training to book learning1 and they are now pushing this branch as fast as the pecuniary means are furnished4 ,nor should we overlook the vast and pressing necessities to which the higher education stands related4 ,there is a loud and general call for competent colored teachers1 instead of there being such a surplus as the aforementioned writer found when he says1 ,there was only one vacancy where there were fifty teachers4 ,a remarkably favored locality6 ,the superintendents of ,southern schools tell a very different story4 ,not long since1 the ,rev4 ,dr4 ,haygood1 of ,georgia1 in an article in the ,independent1 called for fifty thousand colored physicians1 to be furnished as speedily as possible4 ,and who can exaggerate the need of educated colored ministers to take the place of the old ignorant preachers8 ,and how is any race to rise without intelligent leaders of their own in every locality8 ,these will naturally be found in their men of education and property1 in their ministers1 physicians1 lawyers1 editors1 teachers and political representatives4 ,it is idle and wrong to repress or ignore the ambition of negroes of talent to be something more than laborers and servants1 bootblacks and whitewashers4 ,they must have the chance that others have1 in proportion to their numbers2 no more1 no less4 ,and all these rising colored men must have correspondingly intelligent wives1 for their comfort and improvement and for the training of their children4 ,to meet such wants the existing schools of high grade will all be needed and should all be liberally endowed4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,opinions4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association and those allied to it have been the chief agency at the ,south1 so far as which disturb the mental equanimity of the patriotic and thinking citizen of our ,republic1 none is looming in his horizon with a more lurid and portentous aspect than the black cloud of illiteracy which is rapidly spreading over the country1 and especially resting upon the ,southern ,states of the ,union4 ,compared with it as an element of vital danger to the ,republic1 ,mormonism1 ,communism and ,socialism sink into obscurity4 ,the only way out of the unfortunate dilemma or of ameliorating the condition in which the country is placed by the thrusting upon it of this mass of ignorance1 is by education--an education both mental and moral4--,george ,r4 ,stetson4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the real tests of ,northern zeal and liberality1 of ,northern faith and patience in the work of educating the negro1 are yet to come4 ,at the first1 ,christian zeal was mightily stimulated by the patriotic fervors of a great war for the preservation of the ,union4 ,in most minds the course of events identified the preservation of the ,union and the abolition of slavery4 ,the tremendous moral and political forces that were at work during the war1 and for many years after its close1 all conspired to make such an appeal to the thought1 sentiment and conscience of the church in the ,north as was perhaps never before made for any form of ,christian philanthropy4 ,christian men and women were filled with pity for the poor negroes1 and there was a movement of men and money for their education that was never before seen in this1 or perhaps any other1 country4 ,the effort was stupendous1 and the results are amazing4 ,but the conditions that obtained from #ahfe to #ahge will obtain no more4 ,the enthusiasms peculiar to that period pass away with the coming of a new generation4 ,the work must go on now as the foreign missionary movement of ,christendom goes on--by the force that is born of a fixed conviction and an unquestioning faith in ,god's purpose to save the world and in ,his plan of saving it4 ,it is saddening1 it is not surprising1 to know that some noble men and women teaching in negro schools in the ,south are discouraged4 ,this is natural1 but nevertheless perilous1 as well as distressing4 ,one teacher1 long in the service1 speaks thus3 ,some are much discouraged2 we have expected by this time to see results more permanent in the negro character2 we thought it would be somewhat as we have seen it in our ,western colleges after a few years4 ,such a basis of comparison is very unjust to the negro and very hurtful to his teacher4 ,we must not forget heredity2 we must compare the negro as to education in schools in #ahhd with #ahfd4 ,the white man has behind him a thousand years of the influences that enter into our best education4 ,yet how much he has to learn6 ,how much easier for white pupils to learn books than virtue--how much easier to acquire knowledge than wisdom6 ,let us have patience with each other4 ,let us also settle down to steady work1 steady giving and constant praying4 ,this is a work for the next hundred years--and more4--,the ,advance4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the feeling is too prevalent1 even among ,christians1 that the only good opinions of the ,indian race from newspaper articles and from books of ,indian wars1 in which the rifle and scalping knife were the only arguments used1 much prejudice would be removed and the things may continue1 do not despairingly conclude that it is never to be broken down4 ,the stars in their courses fight against injustice and folly4 ,the very stones of the field are in league with those who are on the side of equity and fairness4 ,any region1 small or large1 that persists in a separation of races in its hotels1 railroads1 schools and churches1 dooms itself to an inferior rank in all the departments of its life--in its business as effectively as in its intelligence and its piety4 ,it costs more to keep up two sets of hotels than one4 ,it costs more to build railroad stations with separate waiting-rooms for two races than to build them with accommodations for ladies and gentlemen without regard to race4 ,it costs more to run trains1 if separate passenger cars must be provided for two races on every train4 ,this cost will delay the building of railroads in the first place1 and this can only be met by higher rates of fare1 which will impede business progress4 ,it costs more to maintain a double system of public schools than to provide for all the children under a single system4 ,this increases taxes1 while at the same time the schools cannot be as efficient1 and this diminishes intelligence4 ,for in scattered farming communities1 the districts must be so large under the double system that many families are out of reach of the school4 ,and the number of towns that can have graded schools is greatly reduced by the requirement that no school shall receive pupils of more than one race4 ,normal schools are also made more difficult to maintain1 and teachers' institutes rendered less efficient4 ,a lower average of intelligence is as inevitable under such adverse conditions in the educational machinery of a ,state1 as slower speed in a racehorse is inevitable when he carries heavy weight4 ,similar things may be said of churches4 ,any community that insists on separate churches for different races dooms itself to a lower grade of spiritual experience and a lower degree of ,christian activity4 ,how must every good work be retarded if1 in addition to the separation of ,methodists1 ,baptists1 ,presbyterians1 and others which we find nearly everywhere1 there must also be a further separation of these by races2 if in every neighborhood1 however scattered the population1 there must be a white ,methodist church with its white ,methodist preacher1 and also a colored ,methodist church with its colored ,methodist preacher1 a white ,baptist church and preacher1 and also a colored ,baptist church and preacher1 a white ,presbyterian church and preacher1 and so on through the list4 ,in many cases such churches have service only once in a month1 and the members attend no other in the meantime4 ,it is plain that of two regions alike in other respects1 the one that insists on race distinctions in the worship of the one ,god and ,father of us all1 and will not allow men of different races to stand side by side in doing ,christian work1 must maintain its religious institutions at greater cost and with less efficiency because of this race separation4 ,the region that treats all men impartially in its churches will have the advantage in religion and morals4 ,the region that knows no race distinctions in its schools will have the advantage in intelligence4 ,the region that is color-blind on its public conveyances and in its places of business1 will have the advantage in business1 for it can equip and run steamboats and railroads more economically and conduct factories at lower cost1 while its higher average intelligence will make it a producer of better goods4 ,all these elements will conspire to give the impartial community precedence in wealth1 in literature1 in art1 in social attractiveness1 as well as in a high average intelligence2 in orderly habits1 and in both the power and the will to achieve noble things4 ,power is coming into the hands of those who choose righteousness4 ,let all the commonwealths in our broad land know that only by treating all men with impartiality can they put themselves in alliance with the silent but irresistible forces of social and political economy4 ,there filled at all these exercises1 and sometimes was too strait for the audience4 ,the attendance from town1 especially of our white friends1 was exceptionally large1 and we have never heard so many and so appreciative words of commendation before4 ,rev4 ,dr4 ,worrell1 principal of a boys' school in ,talladega1 who taught in our ,swayne ,hall before the ,war1 when it was a ,baptist ,college1 was present1 leading us in a prayer memorable for its sympathy and fervency4 ,certainly the work of ,talladega ,college was never so strongly intrenched in the regard of the people of ,alabama as now4 ,the full course of exercises for commencement was enacted in good order1 including an able ,baccalaureate by ,dr4 ,strieby1 ,missionary sermon by ,rev4 ,j4 ,w4 ,roberts1 ,dallas1 ,texas1 one of our theological graduates1 and an address by ,dr4 ,roy1 exercises of our two literary societies1 prize speaking and essays1 public examinations1 orations and essays on ,commencement ,day1 and ending with a reception at the ,president's house4 ,others can judge better of the worth of some of these parts than the writer and his associates1 but to us they seemed good4 ,we were greatly encouraged1 and feel that our friends and patrons would have been pleased had they been present4 ,the ,alumni ,association1 formed three years ago1 was represented on ,commencement ,day by ,mrs4 ,l4 ,l4 ,wilson1 who read an essay on ,homes and ,how to ,make ,them1 and by ,rev4 ,j4 ,w4 ,roberts1 whose theme was ,exceptional ,greatness4 ,that afternoon the ,alumni held a meeting in the college chapel1 when representatives from ,states as far away as ,arkansas and ,texas were present1 and others were heard from by letter4 ,at the business meeting it was determined to begin an ,alumni fund1 in aid either of members of the ,association or the ,college4 ,the ,exhibition of ,industrial ,work1 both of the boys and girls1 attracted much attention and warm commendation4 ,the ,slater ,shop1 with its facilities for instruction in much wood1 little iron and some paint1 made its first annual display1 and those who believe in little other education for the child of the late slave1 and those who differ from them1 all agreed in the great advantages of this industrial training4 ,the work exhibited was good2 some of it very choice4 ,we feel that the ,college never had a better anniversary2 take it all in all1 never as good2 but with continued help such as we need1 by the favor of ,god this may well be dwarfed by the greater result of the near future4 ,we are looking for that help with increasing confidence4 ,h4 ,s4 ,,deforest4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,tougaloo ,,commencement4 ,the unsurpassed wealth of our roses had just left their vanishing fragrance on the air1 only the ,cherokees being left in profusion to lend their peculiar charm to our closing exercises1 but the grand old oaks standing like guardian sentinels around the grounds1 in all the freshness of their early leafage and festooned with the ,spanish moss1 ever faithful to all seasons1 gave to the place a patriarchal appearance1 and an air of seclusion from temptation4 ,the healthful cedar boughs and buds bestowed their fragrance like a closing benediction4 ,sec4 ,powell came to us with his strong earnest words of cheer and a lecture on ,slave ,music1 which our young people could illustrate and well appreciate4 ,gov4 ,lowry expressed a hearty commendation of the exhibition of work from the industrial department1 as well as the orations1 essays1 dialogue1 and declamation4 ,the colloquy on our reading-room indicated that good use had been made of that room1 even if the number of volunteers for furnishing news items after dinner had not always been as numerous as might be desired4 ,supt4 ,smith told us that many of the best teachers in the ,state come from this school4 ,dr4 ,galloway and the city fathers of ,jackson showed their appreciation of the sentiments expressed by the young people1 and we heartily wished that the dear1 good1 noble-hearted workers of the ,north could have been present1 who have so generously opened their purses to educate and fit our brother in black for leading his race from a darkness more than skin deep to noble citizenship4 ,we wish you could realize1 as you only can by seeing it1 what a stimulus every such work is to the white people of the ,south1 for as ,dr4 ,haygood stated in his closing address1 though ,northern money generously erected these buildings and pays a large share of the salaries here1 yet the ,state pays the young men and women who go out from this school to teach in the country schools4 ,dear friends1 your investments are bringing in grand returns1 but the needs of this race are very great yet4 ,it is sad to see the number who come to this institution with means to pay their expenses for only a part of the year1 hoping to come back another year1 and trusting that in some way they may be able to continue their studies4 ,a students' aid fund is much needed to assist worthy pupils4 ,aspirations are aroused that cannot be quenched4 ,the daily lessons in keeping rooms tidy1 in personal habits1 in doing thoroughly whatever is undertaken1 cannot be lost1 even if pupils remain but a short time4 ,the sentiment1 that to work is an honor1 to be idle a disgrace1 is so infused into their daily life that we fully believe greater progress will be seen in the coming years than has been seen in the past4 ,the spirit of those who have labored with these ardent aspirants for higher1 better1 nobler things has so entered into and permeated their very being1 that it cannot lie dormant4 ,arouse and cultivate the best there is in this race1 and you have something worth making a sacrifice for4 ,god is showing us1 by the way1 that this is ,his own blessed work4 ,we do not have to wait long years to reap2 the sheaves are abundant every year4 ,in one of our late prayer-meetings special causes for thanksgiving was the topic4 ,there were many expressions of gratitude for the ,christian influence of our school4 ,one young man said3 ,i am just as thankful for what ,i have learned in the workshop as in the school-room4 ,after hearing of the #gjj1jjj one-room log-cabins of the ,south1 and the need there is of skilled workmen1 we felt like singing an added song of praise as we looked through the work exhibited in wood1 tin1 iron1 and cloth1 and saw the promise of better things4 ,surely the young men who can exhibit such work will not allow their mothers1 wives1 and sisters to live in cabins through whose open roofs the stars are visible when they shine4 ,you would travel far to find a more temptingly spread table than the girls of ,tougaloo are taught to prepare--all the eatables of their own make1 even the delicious butter4 ,nowhere in ,new ,england need you look for a nicer-kept cabin and yard than some of those on the little homesteads lately purchased by ,president ,pope1 for one of his ideas of missionary work is to witnessed the close of another year of successful work at ,tillotson ,institute4 ,written examinations were held ,may #bf-bi4 ,the results of this work1 in a shape convenient for inspection1 were placed in the reading room1 and attracted no little attention4 ,oral public examinations were held ,june #a and #b4 ,these showed faithful work on the part of both teachers and pupils4 ,the classes in ,united ,states history and geometry deserve special mention4 ,the excitement of the occasion was a little too much for some of the young people1 leading one to say that ,riel was the ,governor-,general of ,canada1 while another remarked that ,florida1 being discovered on ,easter ,sunday1 and being a land of flowers1 was named the ,mayflower4 ,these blunders1 however1 were speedily corrected by the pupils themselves4 ,the rhetorical exercises of ,tuesday evening called out a very fine audience4 ,the chapel was filled to overflowing4 ,the exercises consisted of the usual programme of choruses1 quartets1 recitations1 declamations1 essays1 etc4 ,mr4 ,edward ,wilson's rendering of his translation of ,cicero's ,first ,oration against ,catiline is deserving of special notice1 though all the parts were given without a single break or failure of memory4 ,we observe our students have great capacity for rising to occasions4 ,in the midst of the programme we were most agreeably surprised by the appearance of ,secretary ,powell1 who happily closed the entertainment by a brief but stirring address4 ,the anniversary exercises of ,wednesday morning made a fitting climax for the series of meetings4 ,though not a commencement occasion1 yet it was distinguished from other days of the closing week1 and from previous anniversaries1 by the presentation of certificates to two young men who have completed the ,elementary ,normal ,course4 ,these young men remain with us to pursue a further course of study4 ,the address of one of them1 ,mr4 ,a4 ,s4 ,terrell1 on the subject ,our ,duty1 is especially worthy of notice4 ,the subject was considered from the stand-point of the advantages afforded colored people4 ,it is true1 he said1 we must bear many hard things1 but let us look on the bright side4 ,let us consider and improve our opportunities4 ,let us accept the good1 from whatever source it comes4 ,to join with ,communists1 labor-unions1 and other discontented classes1 in a chorus of fault-finding and censure1 because we cannot have everything we want1 is to take the sure road to the defeat of our most cherished objects4 ,these are timely words1 and they reveal a state of feeling among colored people which finds all too fertile a soil in the tendency to ignore1 or discriminate1 or1 at best1 grant but a supercilious recognition1 which still in great measure controls ,southern sentiment4 ,the colored people are naturally loyal and conservative4 ,it is possible1 now1 so to develop these qualities1 that they shall be national bulwarks4 ,some time it may be too late1 and if reaction comes it will be terrible4 ,the attitude of many representative men of the ,south1 however1 is most encouraging4 ,our anniversary exercises were honored by the presence of the ,state ,superintendent of ,public ,instruction and the ,county ,superintendent of ,travis ,co41 ,hon4 ,b4 ,m4 ,baker and ,judge ,fullmore4 ,in their addresses at the conclusion of our programme1 both gentlemen spoke with enthusiasm of the great progress in educational matters that has been made in ,texas during the past five years1 among both white and colored4 ,the magnificent school fund of ,texas1 as rapidly as it becomes available1 is devoted to the interests of both races without discrimination4 ,mr4 ,baker emphasized the fact that notwithstanding the liberal provision for a ,state system of schools1 it would be many years before they could dispense with the schools maintained by benevolent societies4 ,the latter must be the main agency for the training of teachers4 ,for the present1 the ,state must devote her energies to the building of school-houses1 and the establishment and maintenance of common schools1 without attempting very much in the line of higher education4 ,both gentlemen spoke in high praise of ,tillotson1 and of the ability and trustworthy character of the teachers she has sent out4 ,secretary ,powell made the concluding address1 and brought the meeting to its highest point of enthusiasm4 ,the presence of these men representing educational interests1 which not long ago seemed to have nothing whatever in common1 their interchange of courtesies1 and their expression of mutual dependence each upon the other1 made the occasion both memorable and very full of suggestion4 ,j4 ,h4 many a rugged steep1 that he must cross many a mountain torrent on slender footing1 make his way through many a gloomy valley4 ,he does not give up1 but presses forward with eagerness and courage1 until he reaches the summit and gazes as a victor on the glorious scenes around4 ,so is it with the student who is determined to become useful to his fellow-men and to ,god4 ,his path is strewn with difficulties all the way4 ,he meets discouragements and back-sets which seem to him sometimes insurmountable1 and he will need all his courage to keep on to the end4 ,in our ,southern country there are1 it seems to me1 many difficulties which do not exist in all parts of our land2 but as ,i hear our teachers tell of their struggles and trials1 ,i conclude there is no broad1 smooth way along which one may walk comfortably up to the temple of knowledge4 ,many who are exceedingly anxious to become students have in early life lost their parents1 and1 being poor1 are unable to provide for themselves1 and unless some helping hand is stretched forth1 must remain in ignorance4 ,there are others1 who1 though in good circumstances1 are not able to appreciate the value of learning1 and so care nothing for it4 ,again1 there are many communities in which the people1 ignorant themselves1 care nothing about the education of their children1 and will make no provisions for schools4 ,i know of settlements of five hundred or more inhabitants among whom there are scarcely any competent preachers1 no good schools or teachers1 no missionary work going on1 and the people in a very degraded state4 ,ignorant parents1 unless persuaded1 are not apt to attend to the education of their children4 ,it is a disadvantage to any one aiming to prepare for future usefulness to meet with either of these unfavorable circumstances that ,i have mentioned1 and yet it is the case with thousands of our boys and girls4 ,the principles which ought to be impressed upon the children's minds while young are neglected1 and false ideas and degraded impressions are allowed to govern them4 ,thus1 they are robbed of an early training in those things which are the true foundations of a noble character4 ,here are the plantations in this ,southland around many of which yet cluster the stains of slavery1 and to look upon them in all their degradation is enough to cause a young man or woman who was once acting in accordance with their sinfulness1 but now trying to aim higher1 to give up and declare that it is useless to try to elevate the great mass of our people to a high standard of citizenship and usefulness1 and it is only when we remember that the hand of the great ,god is in the work1 that one can have any hope4 ,how many to-day are idling away their time1 breaking the ,sabbath1 engaging in only to us but to our parents also1 to know that we are acquiring an education from the hands of these ,christian helpers1 so that we can become useful in the world1 good citizens1 skilled in art and twenty years proved that it would be vain to try to capture him4 ,one white man was found1 a scout and interpreter1 known as ,captain ,jefferds1 who spoke ,apache and who was regarded by ,cochise as a ,it was neither a dictate of humanity nor of true statesmanship to set them loose with arms in their hands4 ,one of the essential steps in the civilization of any tribe is to demonstrate that crimes that we should begin to get urgent requests from them with pledges of coperation such as had sometimes come to us from other places4 ,it was all a mistake for which your ,superintendent is chastened1 contracted for the erection of a comfortable ,mission-house1 which having been put up with ,californian speed1 was dedicated on ,monday1 ,may #ah4 ,i could not myself be present at the service1 but ,rev4 ,d4 ,goodsell1 pastor of the ,congregational ,church1 conducted it well4 ,there were songs and ,scripture readings by the pupils1 an address by ,ju ,guy1 the helper1 giving in a brief and modest way his own religious experience2 addresses also by ,bro4 ,goodsell and by ,rev4 ,mr4 ,mc,millan1 of the ,m4 ,e4 ,church2 a collection which under the circumstances was quite generous2 and finally a banquet which the pupils asked the privilege of providing for their friends4 ,,vi4 ,,fresno4--,my last visit was at ,fresno1 the largest and most promising town between ,stockton and ,los ,angeles4 ,christians4 ,three of these were ,baptists from ,oregon1 one a ,methodist and one a ,congregationalist4 ,all were ready to coperate4 ,the last one gave his name as ,soo ,hoo ,foo1 and said that about eight years ago he began to believe in ,jesus1 and united in ,san ,francisco with our ,congregational ,association of ,christian ,chinese4 ,soon after this he left the city1 and ever since has been almost entirely destitute of ,christian instruction and companionship4 ,yet he had not relinquished his purpose to follow ,christ1 and his heart warmed at once at the prospect of a mission in ,fresno4 ,our school was started there ,may #a1 and gives good promise of permanent usefulness4 ,the teacher speaks in glowing terms about ,soo ,hoo ,foo1 believing that he might be trained for good service as a missionary4 ,about this time will tell2 but certainly our faith may well be strengthened and our hearts gladdened to see how the ,good ,shepherd knows and keeps ,his scattered lambs4 99 99 99 99 99
