middle of the seventeenth century she occupied a leading place among the independent nations of ,europe4 ,great discoverers1 like ,henry ,hudson1 had given her new dominions east and west1 and colonization had begun4 ,on the sea her flag was supreme2 her merchant marine1 going to and from her own possessions was seen in every port of the world2 her admirals1 ,ruyter and ,tromp1 had won her an illustrious place forever in the annals of naval warfare4 ,these were the days of ,milton and ,ben ,jonson2 of ,cromwell1 ,gustavus ,adolphus and ,richelieu2 of ,murillo1 ,rubens and ,van ,dyck--days when ,holland had within her own borders such men as ,barneveld1 the great statesman2 ,grotius1 the father of international law2 ,spinoza1 the philosopher and ,john de ,witt1 the ,grand ,pensioner--besides that noble group of artists3 ,hals1 ,cuyp1 ,ruysdael1 ,potter1 ,steen and ,ostade4 ,these days1 too1 saw the settling of many states in ,america1 the founding of ,quebec1 ,new ,york and ,boston4 ,strangely apart from all these history-making movements1 and from his peers among men1 dwelt ,rembrandt1 the great master1 in ,amsterdam1 serenely happy to-day in painting a portrait of his loved ,saskia1 to-morrow in etching the features of a wandering ,jew4 ,he had given himself1 body and soul1 to his art1 and no man or movement of men could distract him from his work4 ,year by year his busy brain and dexterous hand produced paintings1 etchings1 drawings1 in slightly varying proportion1 but always in amazing quantity4 ,for his forty-one productive years we find to his credit the average annual output of thirteen paintings1 nine etchings1 and thirty-nine drawings4 ,and these numbers would be materially greater1 doubtless1 had we a full record of his work4 ,a few decades ago the ordinary person thought of ,rembrandt only as a great painter2 that time has fortunately passed4 ,modern engraving methods have made it possible to spread broadcast reproductions of his etched work4 ,thanks to these mechanical engraving-processes some of ,rembrandt's etchings are now familiarly known and1 to a degree at least1 they are appreciated4 ,no reproduction1 however1 can ever give the subtle quality of the original1 and a revelation comes to one who looks for the first time on some brilliant1 early impressions of his famous plates4 ,the ink is still alive2 the ,chinese or ,japanese paper which ,rembrandt generally used1 has sometimes gone very yellow and spotted1 but oftener it has the fine mellowness of age4 ,we treat it with respect1 almost with reverence1 for we recall that these very sheets of paper were dampened and laid upon the etched plate1 already prepared by the hands of the great etcher himself4 ,each impression he pulled was as carefully considered as the biting of the copper plate4 ,he varied the strength of the ink1 the method of wiping1 the pressure used2 knowing the possibilities of his plate1 he so manipulated it that it responded to his touch as a piano responds to the touch of a musician4 ,the poor impressions and very late states1 of which1 unfortunately1 many exist1 are generally the work of those mercenary ones into whose hands the plates fell after his death--sometimes even before4 ,like a man with no music in his soul attempting to improve upon a sonata by ,beethoven1 these people not only printed1 haphazard1 poor impressions having the master's name1 but sometimes even undertook to rearrange the composition and often to rework the plate4 ,no4 #a4 ,rembrandt's ,mother4 ,no4 #a4 ,rembrandt's ,mother4 ,a hundred years before ,rembrandt's time acid had been used to help out the graver4 ,durer1 among others1 used it1 and he employed also1 but in hesitating manner1 the dry-point with its accompanying burr4 ,rembrandt's method of utilizing the roughness thrown up on the copper by the dry-point needle was a development of its possibilities that no one else1 even among his own pupils1 has ever equaled4 ,it was much the same with everything else3 the burin of the professional engraver he handled so skilfully that it is impossible to tell where the acid or the dry-point work stopped and the reinforcing work of the graver began4 ,when others tried to combine these methods they failed4 ,the hand of ,rembrandt was the obedient servant of his mastermind3 so well trained was it that with a preliminary sketch or without it1 the needle produced on the smoked wax surface of the copper the picture which floated before him1 so correctly that the brain was not diverted from the ideal picture by any crudity in the lines4 ,if the tools1 methods1 and effects which the great engravers had used suggested anything to him1 he freely took them up and bent them to his will4 ,making free use of all1 binding himself to none1 he always remained the versatile1 independent student4 ,and the strangest thing about it all is that he appears to have recognized1 grappled with1 and forever solved the problems of the art while nothing but a youth4 ,one of the two etchings which bear the earliest date 7#afbh7 and signature is known as 8,rembrandt's ,mother3 ,head and ,bust0 7,no4 #a47 ,it is a delightful little plate1 drawn with all the skill and freedom of a practiced hand4 ,frederick ,wedmore1 an ,english authority on etching says that 8nothing in ,rembrandt's work is more exhaustive or more subtle10 and ,s4 ,r4 ,koehler1 an ,american authority1 called it 8a magnificent little portrait1 complete artistically and technically10 and very truly refers to it as 8a prefiguration of what was to come40 ,a man of twenty-two years already a master-etcher6 ,no4 #baj4 ,omval4 ,no4 #baj4 ,omval4 ,this etching measures just about two and a half inches square4 ,there are others about the size of a postage-stamp1 while the largest one1 8,the ,descent from the ,cross0 7,no4 #ajc71 is twenty-two by sixteen and a half inches4 ,the amount of labor on these large plates is overpowering1 while the workmanship in the smaller ones is almost unbelievably fine--think of a child's face not over one-eighth of an inch wide1 and hands less than a sixteenth of an inch across1 yet really eloquent with expression6 ,rembrandt accepted the assistance of his pupils1 as who among the old masters did not8 ,he was1 however1 not practical enough to profit much by them3 he could work to much better advantage alone4 ,among his thirty or forty pupils ,ferdinand ,bol1 who came to his studio when only sixteen and stayed for eight years1 gave his master most assistance4 ,bol's rendering is at times very much like ,rembrandt's4 ,some critics think1 for instance1 that he etched most of the 8,goldweigher0 7,no4 #afg7 and 8,abraham ,caressing ,isaac0 7,no4 #adh72 both1 however1 are signed by ,rembrandt4 ,when these pupils established studios of their own1 they made free use of their old master's compositions1 subjects and figures4 ,with ,jan ,lievens1 his fellow student at ,lastman's studio1 with van ,vliet1 ,roddermondt and other engravers and etchers of the time1 ,rembrandt was on terms of great intimacy4 ,they appear often to have worked on the same plate1 and to have borrowed each other's ideas 8without let or hindrance40 ,indeed1 it is hard to comprehend the extent to which exchange of ideas was carried at that time4 ,here is a good illustration of the way things went without protest of any sort being raised4 ,hercules ,seghers etched a large landscape with small figures1 after a painting by ,adam ,elzheimer and an engraving by ,count de ,goudt1 entitled 8,tobias and the ,angel40 ,this copper plate came into ,rembrandt's possession2 he burnished out ,tobias and his companion1 and replaced them by ,joseph1 ,mary and the ,holy ,child 7,no4 #bff74 ,to cover the erasure he added foliage1 but the wing of the angel1 the outlines of a leg and various other unused portions of ,tobias can still be seen4 ,rembrandt's reason for bothering with this plate is incomprehensible4 ,he improved it1 undoubtedly1 but the composite result is exceedingly commonplace and reflects no credit upon any one4 ,john ,burnet1 the etcher-author1 has drawn attention to the fact that the figure of ,christ in 8,christ at ,emmaus0 7,no4 #bhb7 is taken from one by ,raphael1 who is known to have borrowed it from da ,vinci1 and it is thought da ,vinci1 in his turn1 got it from a former master4 ,rembrandt borrowed also from ,rubens1 ,titian1 ,mantegna1 his pupil ,gerard ,dou1 ,van de ,velde and others4 ,many of his contemporaries and successors extended toward him the same sort of flattery4 ,more than half the subjects of ,rembrandt's etchings are portraits and studies of the human figure2 about one-quarter are scriptural or religious4 ,there are two dozen landscapes1 and the remainder are allegorical and fancy compositions4 ,we find then the two most productive sources of his inspiration were the men of his day and the men of the ,bible4 ,this book appears to have been the only one he knew at all well1 but of it he made excellent use4 ,despite the incongruities of his ,biblical compositions1 despite the broad ,dutch features1 the modern1 religious work was reached1 however in 8,christ1 with the ,sick ,around ,him0 7,no4 #bcf7 7etched about #afej71 which is often called the finest piece of etched work that has ever been produced4 ,it is a combination of pure etching and dry-point1 and in the second state1 there is an ,india-ink wash in the background4 ,there are1 ,i think1 nine copies of the first state extant2 the last one sold at public auction 7,christie's1 #ahic7 brought over #h1ejj4 ,while the ,christ here is not so satisfying as the one in 8,christ ,preaching0 7,no4 #bef7 which is remarkably strong and noble1 it is ,rembrandt's typical conception of our ,lord--always ministering to real flesh and blood1 the poor1 suffering1 common people4 ,what a striking contrast with the resplendent artificiality which surrounds the ,christ of the ,italian masters4 ,no4 #bij4 ,jan ,lutma1 ,goldsmith and ,sculptor4 ,no4 #bij4 ,jan ,lutma1 ,goldsmith and ,sculptor4 ,rembrandt was his own most frequent model4 ,he painted about sixty portraits of himself1 and among his etchings we find about two score more4 ,some of them are large and finished1 as the deservedly popular 8,rembrandt ,leaning on a ,stone ,sill0 7,no4 #afh71 which is a perfect example of the possibilities of the etching-needle2 others are mere thumb-nail sketches of various expressions of face4 ,he used his mother many times1 and also his wife and son4 ,in all these is apparent a delightful sense of joy in his work4 ,nor is this desirable quality lacking in the wonderful series of large portraits of his friends3 the doctors1 the ministers1 the tradesmen of ,amsterdam4 ,perhaps these were pot-boilers1 as some students of his work say1 but surely never artist before or since produced to order a group of etchings that1 taken entirely apart from his other plates would assure their author a high place among the greatest etchers4 ,in the whole lot there are few that some authority on etching or some great artist has not held up as an example of work that even the master himself never surpassed4 ,but an artist cannot always keep himself at concert pitch and when ,rembrandt etched the portrait of his friend 8,abraham ,francen0 7,no4 #bia7 ,i feel that he struck an uncertain1 almost false note1 unworthy of himself4 ,we might1 perhaps1 account for this by saying1 that it was done in #afef1 the year of his bankruptcy were it not that the noble 8,jan ,lutma0 7,no4 #bij7 which competes with the 8,jan ,six0 7,no4 #bbh7 for the place of masterpiece of the entire series1 was made the same year4 ,but he was an unaccountable sort of man who could produce in a poor1 naked studio1 with untold trouble stalking him on all sides1 such an etching as the 8,lutma10 such a painting as the 8,syndics of the ,draper's ,guild10 both of which rank with the best products of his happy1 care-free years of luxury4 ,it is noticeable that ,rembrandt had no sittings from persons of high rank4 ,so far as ,i can find 8,burgomaster0 is the most exalted title that can with certainty be given to any of his patrons4 ,the reason is not far to seek4 ,rembrandt was not a courtier like ,van ,dyck and ,rubens2 he was too independent and too busy to spend time kow-towing to society4 ,a contemporary says of him1 8,when he painted he would not have given audience to the greatest monarch on earth40 ,he calmly set at nought established principles and conventional rules1 in etiquette as well as in art1 and followed the bent of his genius with absolute disregard for the opinions of his fellows4 ,the story of 8,night ,watch0 is characteristic of ,rembrandt and shows the whole situation in minature4 ,the members of ,captain ,banning ,cocq's ,company of the ,civic ,guards were flattered by the offer of ,rembrandt1 then at the height of his fame1 to paint their portraits4 ,the sixteen members destined to figure in the picture gladly subscribed one hundred florins each1 and great were their expectations2 but even greater their disappointment when the picture was placed on view4 ,all but a half-dozen felt that they had a distinct grievance against the painter4 ,had they not paid for portraits of themselves8 ,and they got--what8 ,here a face in deep shadow1 here one half-hid by the one in front1 here one so freely drawn as to be unrecognizable4 ,the artist had made a picture1 to be sure--but their portraits6 ,where were their portraits--the portraits they had paid for8 ,rembrandt had thought out every inch of his picture3 he was sure it could not be better1 and change it he would not4 ,the resentment was bitter and deep1 and the ,civic ,guards in future bestowed their favors elsewhere4 ,there were1 however1 some fellow citizens who recognized his genius and sincerity4 ,these stood by him4 ,samuel ,manasseh ben ,israel1 whom ,cromwell honored1 was his neighbor on the ,breedstraat1 and an intimate friend4 ,then there were ,jan ,sylvius and ,cornells ,anslo1 the ,protestant few others are known and honored to-day chiefly because they were ,rembrandt's friends4 ,his recognition of their faithulness to him was shown in a much more permanent form than they knew4 ,good impressions of his etched portraits of these men are still to be seen4 ,they are1 like all his etchings1 rapidly increasing in value4 ,a 8,jan ,six0 sold recently for over #ad1jjj2 an 8,ephraim ,bonus0 7,no4 #bbf7 for #i1jjj4 ,to possess such a portrait of an ancestor is little short of a patent of nobility4 ,the ,six family of ,amsterdam happily have not only ,rembrandt's oil-portraits of the ,sixes of his day1 but also good impressions of the etching of the burgomaster1 and even the plate itself--that famous dry-point plate1 which the artist worked on for weeks1 and which his critics have worked over ever since4 ,some of these critics hold that even ,rembrandt should not have attempted such complete tonality in an etching1 that ,jan ,six urged him to it1 and that1 in short1 as an etching1 it comes near to the failure line4 ,other critics believe that the artist's idea was to show the utmost extent to which the art could be carried1 and that in so doing he produced a masterpiece4 ,middleton1 for instance1 thinks that 8it is not possible to conceive a move beautiful and more perfect triumph of the etcher's art40 ,few1 it is safe to say1 can see a good impression of an early state of this portrait without being struck by its great originality and beauty1 and upon closer study1 ,i feel a fair-minded person will inevitably fall under the spell of the wonderfully drawn face and hands1 the deep1 transparent shadows1 and the soft1 tender light which envelopes the whole4 ,no4 #ahc4 ,jacob and ,laban 787 ,no4 #ahc4 ,jacob and ,laban 7874 ,no4 #bbh4 ,jan ,six4 ,no4 ,rembrandt had a few such cultivated friends as those mentioned above1 it was said of him by a contemporary ,german painter that 8his art suffered by his predilection for the society of the vulgar40 ,it certainly would have been more profitable for ,rembrandt if he had always portrayed people of position and wealth1 but that his art suffered because he many times used beggers for models it would be impossible to show4 ,an interesting series of tramps1 peddlers and outcasts began with the beginning of his career as an etcher1 and ended twenty years later with the production of one of his most popular plates1 8,beggars ,receiving ,alms at the ,door of a ,house10 7,no4 #bcc7 a very freely handled1 splendidly composed etching1 in which surprisingly few lines judiciously placed do the work usually allotted to double their number4 ,a little plate of less than four square inches1 entitled 8,the ,quacksalver10 7,no4 #aci71 strikes me as the masterpiece of this series4 ,although ,van de ,velde is supposed to have given ,rembrandt the idea for his drawing1 his genius made it his own in realism and movement1 and in its beauties of line1 color and texture4 8,an ,old ,woman ,sleeping0 7,no4 #abi771 although scarcely to be included in this series1 is another that has wonderful spontaneity4 ,this is no posed model1 but one who has actually fallen asleep over her book2 ,rembrandt sees her1 and before her 8forty winks0 are over1 she is immortalized1 and probably she never knew it4 ,about #afdj ,rembrandt began etching landscapes4 ,they are free and simple in composition and treatment and show even greater force and more suggestive power than those that he painted4 ,practically all of his two dozen landscape plates hold undisputed first rank4 ,they always have and probably always will4 ,in 8,landscape with ,trees1 ,farm-buildings and a ,tower0 7,no4 #bdd71 the tower is 8ruined0 in the third state4 ,a first state print at the ,boston ,museum of ,fine ,arts shows the tower in good preservation4 ,one of these prints sold at auction not long ago for over #i1jjj4 ,another of the exceedingly satisfactory etchings in the series1 one that has exercised a great influence on landscape etching all the world over1 is 8,omval0 7,no4 #baj74 ,its creator seemed fond of the fine old tree in this plate4 ,he used it several times elsewhere4 8,six's ,bridge0 7,no4 #bji7 which is almost pure outline1 and the 8,three ,trees0 7,no4 #bje71 with its great sweep of flat country1 have a right to all the praise showered upon them4 ,they1 too1 are masterpieces4 ,while ,rembrandt's genius made itself manifest in his landscapes1 it surely is absent from most of his animal drawings4 ,we must remember that if he ever went outside of ,holland it was for a few months to the east coast of ,england1 and that the opportunity for studying any great variety of animals in either place was not great4 ,his horses1 asses1 hogs1 etc41 improve as the years advance4 ,the little dog with the collar of bells is well drawn4 ,he1 undoubtedly1 was a member of the family4 ,it is an interesting fact1 at a time when the illustrating of books and magazines is such an important art1 to know that ,rembrandt was offered and accepted some commissions to make illustrations for books4 ,these attempts to give form to another's ideas were not successful--in one case it was such a failure as to leave it still uncertain what he intended to illustrate4 ,vosmaer1 his great biographer1 says that this print 8,the ,ship of ,fortune0 7,no4 #ajf71 pictures incidents in the life of ,st4 ,paul1 while ,michel1 another biographer1 thinks that it illustrates events which gather about ,mark ,anthony and the battle of ,actium6 ,a score of men--,bartsch1 ,wilson1 ,blanc1 ,middleton1 ,rovinski1 to mention a few--have at sundry times and in divers places compiled annotated catalogues of ,rembrandt's etchings4 ,they1 and other students like ,vosmaer1 ,haden1 ,hamerton and ,michel1 have given years to study and travel in connection with their books on ,rembrandt4 ,all lovers of etching appreciate this and are grateful4 ,nevertheless1 it is amusing sometimes to compare their expert testimony4 ,about #afcc somebody etched a 8,good ,samaritan40 ,several of these experts regretfully1 but frankly1 admit that ,rembrandt is the guilty one4 ,others are sure that a pupil did the worst of the work2 ,haden says it is entirely the work of another hand2 while yet another declares that of all ,rembrandt's etchings this particular 8,good ,samaritan0 7,no4 #aja7 is his favorite4 ,middleton1 to give another instance1 thinks that the thick lines from top to bottom1 in the fourth state of the 8,christ ,crucified between ,two ,thieves10 78,the ,three ,crosses07 7,no4 #bgj7 are not ,rembrandt's work1 for they serve 8to obliterate1 conceal and mar every excellence it had possessed40 ,haden1 however1 considers that the time of darkness is represented1 and that this particular state is far the finest in effect4 ,much confusion arises from the fact that sometimes all the states of a plate under discussion are not known to each critic4 ,the whole matter of states is a
