,light ,notes ,,introduction ,this translation of the ancient ,gnstic work1 called by ,schmidt1 the ,untitled ,apocalypse1 is based chiefly on ,amlineau's ,french version of the superior ,,ms4 of the ,codex ,brucianus1 now in the ,bodleian ,library1 ,oxford4 ,in making the rendering ,i have studied the context carefully1 and have not neglected the ,greek words interspersed with the ,coptic2 also ,i have availed myself of ,mr ,mead's translation of certain important passages from ,schmidt's edition1 for purposes of comparison4 ,anything that ,i have added to bring out the meaning of the ,gnstic author now and again1 ,i have enclosed in brackets4 ,such suggestions have always arisen from the text4 ,i fancy my ,english version will be found to give a reasonably accurate idea of the contents of one of the most abstruse symbolical works in the world4 ,the notes that ,i have added are not intended to be final or exhaustive1 but to give the general reader some guidance towards understanding the intensely interesting topics with which the powerful mind of the ancient mystical writer was preoccupied4 ,i have endeavoured to show myself a sympathetic ,hierophant or expounder of some of the mysteries1 not without study of the ,gnsis1 both of the ,christianised and purely ,hellenistic type1 for the key to the understanding of symbolism is only given into the hands of sympathy4 ,the ,codex ,brucianus was brought to ,england from ,upper ,egypt1 by the famous traveller ,bruce1 in #agfi1 and bequeathed by him to the care of the ,bodleian ,library1 ,oxford4 ,it contains several ,gnstic works translated into the ,upper ,egyptian dialect from the ,greek1 and probably is as old as the sixth century ,a4,d4 ,the ,greek originals were of course much older1 that is to say1 the ,,mss4 to which the codex ultimately goes back were much older4 ,we are only concerned with one of them here1 the so-called ,untitled ,apocalypse1 which is markedly distinct from the others in character and style4 ,schmidt dates it well in the second century ,a4,d41 and with this estimate ,i am inclined to agree4 ,it shows1 as ,i have endeavoured to make clear in the notes1 marked affinities in some respects to the ,gospel of ,mary 7,codex ,akhmim71 which we know to have been in existence before #ahj ,a4,d41 and its philosophical basis is the ,platonism of ,alexandria4 ,if it is by one writer1 ,i think it may be dated from #afj or #agj ,a4,d4-#bjj ,a4,d41 and belongs to the period of ,basilides and ,valentinus4 ,before venturing upon any discussion of the authorship and contents of our document1 it would be as well to say a few words as to the meaning of that much misunderstood technical term ,gnsis in ,hellenistic and early ,christian theology4 ,for a fuller exposition ,i would refer the reader to the admirable essay upon the subject by ,mr ,g4 ,r4 ,s4 ,mead in his volume ,quests ,old and ,new4 ,gnsis was not philosophy in the generally accepted sense of the term1 or even religio-philosophy4 ,it was immediate knowledge of ,god's mysteries received from direct intercourse with the ,deity--mysteries which must remain hidden from the natural man1 a knowledge at the same time which exercises decided reaction on our relationship to ,god and also on our nature or disposition 7,reitzenstein74 ,it was the power or gift of receiving and understanding revelation1 which finally culminated in the direct unveiled vision of ,god and the transformation of the whole man into spiritual being by contact with ,him4 ,the ground of the idea of ,gnsis does not seem to be very different from that of the later ,mystical ,theology1 which originally meant the direct1 secret1 and incommunicable knowledge of ,god received in contemplation 7,dom ,john ,chapman74 ,the revelation sought for was not so much a dogmatic revelation as a revelation of the processes of transmutation of ,rebirth1 of ,apotheosis or ,deification4 ,its aim was dynamic rather than static4 ,but while the followers of the ,gnsis1 both ,christian and ,hellenistic1 would have agreed that the direct knowledge of ,god is incommunicable to others1 they undoubtedly seem to have held that there were what may be described as intermediate or preparatory processes or energisings which could be communicated3 7#a7 by initiation into a holy community2 7#b7 by a duly qualified master2 7#c7 under the veils of symbols and sacraments4 ,the ,gnstic movement began long before the ,christian era 7what its original historical impulse was we do not know71 and only one aspect of it1 and that from a strictly limited point of view1 has been treated by ecclesiastical historians4 ,recent investigations have challenged the traditional outlook and the traditional conclusions and the traditional facts4 ,with some to-day1 and with many more to-morrow1 the burning question is1 or will be--not how did a peculiarly silly and licentious heresy rise within the ,church--but how did the ,church rise out of the great ,gnstic movement1 and how did the dynamic ideas of the ,gnsis become crystallised into ,dogmas8 ,i do not indicate a solution2 ,i do not express an opinion4 ,i call attention to a fact in the world of scholarship that will not be without its decided reaction upon the plain man4 ,but the study of the ancient ,gnsis1 and indeed of mysticism generally1 has left another suggestion that seems laden with limitless possibilities4 ,let us first go back to what ,i said as to the communication of certain processes1 leavenings1 or energisings under a sacramental veil4 ,these processes were held to modify the nature of the person who submitted to them in a peculiar manner that was likened to the impress or character of a seal upon wax4 ,these seals or characters could not only be acquired through formal rites and by the laying on of the hands of a master1 but also1 ,i am disposed to believe1 by a certain mode of study--,i am developing the ,gnstic theory1 not stating one of my own--namely1 that of a highly symbolic literature4 ,the objection of the ,gnstic to a plain statement of facts would probably be somewhat as follows3 ,what you say is very good and true as far as it goes1 but it is ',pistis1' not ,gnsis2 ,faith1 not ,knowledge4 ,you desire to be a changed man4 ,pistis will change you to a certain extent4 ,i have nothing to say against it1 but it will not change you in the radical way that ,gnsis does4 ,if you went on to argue that your statement was reasonable and received admirable support from logic and philosophy1 he would probably reply3 ,philosophy of the kind you mention is excellent1 and forms a basis for ,gnsis which is not contrary to reason1 though it is above it4 ,gnsis is a rebirth by which you become a god1 and then you will have no need to find out things by talking and discursive reasoning1 for everything will be within yourself and you will know all things in a vital way1 by an act of simple intuition in the end4 ',the wind bloweth where it listeth1 and thou hearest the sound thereof1 but canst not tell whence it cometh1 and whither it goeth2 so is every one that is born of the ,spirit4' ,if you tie yourself down to logic1 you will not know the real things1 the ',things that are1' by getting inside them4 ,your knowledge will be external1 superficial4 ,gnsis1 you may be surprised to learn1 is not just 'knowing1' it is light and 'life1' living and being as well4 ,this must not be taken as an attacking reason2 if you join our school you will have a stiff course of ,plato4 ,you ought to know the ',things that are' from the ordinary point of view1 from outside1 before you approach them with the idea of getting inside them1 and so raising them up within yourself as far-shining lives4 ,afterwards you will study in a new manner that will seem madness to the common-sensed2 and a ,divine ,madness indeed it is1 for it will lead you to the secret of the ,cross4 ,hence the disciple was confronted in due time with a document that would not yield its secrets to dialectic1 a kind of ritual in words that initiated his intuition into self-knowledge4 ,intense devotion was needed1 imagination1 and will-power4 ,the ,gnsis came gradually1 perhaps after the manuscript had been laid aside2 it was the effort towards a sympathetic understanding that mattered1 that was rewarded with life and light from ,god4 ,the mere success of the logical mind in unravelling a puzzle was as nothing1 for the readings of these monstrous1 many-faceted stars of symbolism were infinite4 ,that the intuition should enter into self awareness as into a sacred place of the mysteries--that was a process of the ,gnsis4 ,now this strange way of teaching1 which was really a ,cloud of ,unknowing1 was the real basis and point1 as it were1 of the ,alexandrine method of interpreting ,scripture4 ,think of ,philo and what he says of the teaching of his ,gnstic ,therapeuts4 ,think of ,clement1 and of ,origen with his ,eternal ,gospel4 ,this quickening of the intuition into knowledge of itself and ,god1 through allegory and symbol based on philosophy1 was the ,everlasting ,gospel4 ,so ,gnstic documents were not merely intended to puzzle the outsider1 but the insider as well4 ,this fact will enable us to appreciate better ,basilides' famous remark about the one or two only who could understand his system4 ,his frame of mind was a little like that of a university examiner after setting a paper4 ,we need not think that these people were altogether destitute of humour4 ,it would be a gross exaggeration1 of course1 to say that all the ,gnstic systems described in ,irenaeus and ,hippolytus might have been devised by the same man1 but it would be a useful exaggeration1 illustrating the extreme anti-literalist point of view4 ,our knowledge of the schools rests for the most part on reports made upon documents such as these1 the purport of which was entirely missed by those that made them4 ,they treated ,gnsis as if it were another kind of ,pistis1 or another system of philosophy4 ,one doubts very much the correctness of the traditional classification of schools1 which was made by people who were not in very close touch with them4 ,one doubts if there was much hostility between these schools1 however much their symbolism may appear to differ on the surface4 ,what was the result of these processes initiated or started by sacramental rites1 by symbolism1 by masters of ,gnsis8 ,was the result something purely subjective at best8 ,the answer of the ,masters of the ,gnsis to this question1 which is characteristic of the modern mind and expresses the doubt which is gnawing at the heart of much modern religious life1 would have been ,no4 ,there are certain physical changes as well4 ,the body is spiritualised4 ,they might possibly have added1 ,it is assumed1 in part at least1 by the ,body of ,stars#a which has been awakened within it4 ,this is the ,body by means of which ,union with ,god takes place1 and then still more wonderful changes happen4 ,we can awaken the ,body of ,stars or ,rays1 but to unite it with ,himself1 that depends upon the ,will of ,god above1 but all is a mystery of ,grace4 ,this awakening of the ,body of ,stars1 this assumption1 or partial assumption1 by immortality of the inner flesh1 is the interesting possibility to which ,i referred earlier4 ,let me here quote two ,catholic writers4 ,says ,dllinger 7,first ,age1 p4 #bce1 quoting ,rom4 vii4 #bb1 #a ,cor4 vi4 #ad1 ,eph4 iii4 #af and #cj1 in support71 ,saint ,paul not only divides man into body and spirit1 but distinguishes in the bodily nature1 the gross1 visible1 bodily frame and a hidden1 inner 'spiritual' body not subject to limits of space or cognisable by the senses2 this last1 which shall hereafter be raised1 is alone fit for and capable of organic union with the glorified body of ,christ1 of substantial incorporation with it4 ,dom ,john ,chapman1 ,o4,s4,b41 in his excellent article on ,catholic ,mysticism in ,hastings' ,encyclopaedia of ,religion and ,ethics1 vol4 ix41 writes3 ,it is not to be denied that this psycho-physical side demands scientific investigation4 ,it seems certain that ,st ,john of the ,cross is justified in his view that the body is somehow 'spiritualised' by contemplation4 ,such facts as the power of saints over the animal world and the power of reading thoughts1 e4g41 are proved beyond cavil4 ,here1 then1 we have a consistent tradition held by many schools1 and ,i think that it is by investigation along the lines suggested by ,dom ,john ,chapman that there is the greatest chance of arriving at some proof of immortality that will satisfy the scientific mind4 ,for the claim of mystics is that here and now it is possible to participate consciously in that which is immortal1 and the spiritualising of the body is an outward sign of the substantiality of that claim1 the standard set up upon a hill to testify that the human consciousness is not planetary merely1 not hylic1 nor psychic1 but has its root in the wisdom that issues from an inconceivable ,abyss of ,life and ,light4 ,i believe that the original source of the document ,i have translated belonged to an ,egyptian community or school of contemplation whose name has been forgotten in the night of time2 that it was connected with the preparation of a candidate for the ,baptism of ,light4 ,what form this rite really took it is impossible to say1 but that it had outward signs of some kind is extremely probable4 ,we have an old ,gnstic ritual preserved in the compilation generally known as the ,acts of ,john4 ,perhaps this may give us some idea of the sort of ceremony that was worked4 ,i fancy there was an ,eucharistic side1 and that the ,baptism of ,light was connected with the mystic crucifixion alluded to so often in the notes4 ,possibly in the midst of the sacred dance1 at the breaking of the ,bread1 there was a certain laying on of hands by an adept ,master1 one who had himself attained to the autoptic vision1 and then the candidate was left alone to immerse himself in the ,dark ,ray of the ,divine ,mind4 ,i think also that the original ,,ms4 was based upon the work of one ,master1 whose name1 like that of the order to which he belonged1 is lost in the night of time1 but that it also contains amplifications and additions by at least one later hand4 ,it will thus represent the mind of a grade of teaching1 and possibly contains material dating back to the period of the ,therapeutae that ,philo knew4 ,in other words1 the community may have been an old one before it was ,christianised4 ,in any case1 it remains the record of a stupendous spiritual adventure1 the attempt to produce a race of ,divinised men1 that is not without the splendour of tragedy1 for at some time1 like the ,holy ,cup of ,legend1 the presence of ,masterhood departed1 and the external house fell into ruin and its place knew it no more4 ,perhaps1 in the desire to propagate1 it admitted unworthy candidates2 perhaps it turned to the by-ways of magic in an attempt to arrest the external course of nature and to defy necessity2 perhaps there came a day when none could understand the inner meaning of the high and far-shining mysteries1 and so amidst party strife the building word was lost4 ,many a man1 no doubt1 who called himself a ,gnstic was but a sorry rogue2 many another was but a student of the letter1 not of the life2 many another was but a spiritual swashbuckler1 pompous in his demeanour and cryptic in his utterance2 some1 led by an abhorrent fantasy1 may have wandered along the path that goes to the ,venus-berg and have striven to lisp a formula that would transform the earth into ,gehenna rather than into ,heaven4 ,but1 beside this mass of imposture1 of folly1 of elegant idleness and of corruption1 the rebours of a spiritual outpouring1 there was a real mysticism that could present the ,authentic ,spectacle and could utter comfortable words in tongues not of this world utterly4 ,there was a ,gnsis that strove to give the ,peace of ,god to those within and to those without1 because in ,peace all things were made1 that yearned to bring forth children1 quickened fiery souls1 ons1 gods1 in bodies of light for the love of ,god2 that saw in all things ,grace1 the ,sponsa ,dei1 the ,mother most pure and immaculate4 ,no creature was ever wronged of ,thee1 no spark ever quenched1 no hope defrauded and hurled eternally from the sky with shattered wings by ,thee4 ,such is the fair ,faith that chanted its prayer beneath a heaven set with such strange galaxies1 and whispers to us now through the disremembered symbols of a forgotten book4 ,it is pleasant1 in these days of strife1 to be able to quote ,dr ,schmidt's appreciation of the ,untitled ,apocalypse with a cordial agreement3 ,what a different world1 on the contrary1 meets us in our thirty-one leaves6 ,we find ourselves in the pure spheres of the highest ,plrma2 we see1 step by step1 this world1 so rich in heavenly beings1 coming into existence before our eyes2 each individual space with all its inmates is minutely described1 so that we can form for ourselves a living picture of the glory and splendour of this ,gnstic heaven4 ,the speculations are not so confused and fantastic as those of the ,pistis ,sophia and our two ,books of ,jeu4444 ,the author is imbued with the ,greek spirit1 equipped with a full knowledge of ,greek philosophy1 full of the doctrine of the ,platonic ideas1 an adherent of ,plato's view of the origin of evil--that is to say1 ,hyle4444 ,we possess in these leaves a magnificently conceived work by an old ,gnstic philosopher1 and we stand astonished1 marvelling at the boldness of the speculations1 dazzled by the richness of the thought1 touched by the depth of soul of the author4 ,this is not1 like the ,pistis ,sophia1 the product of declining ,gnsticism1 but dates from a period when ,gnstic genius1 like a mighty eagle1 left the world behind it and soared in wide and ever wider circles towards pure light1 towards pure knowledge1 in which it lost itself in ecstasy4 ,in one word1 we possess in this ,gnstic work1 as regards age and contents1 a work of the very highest importance1 which takes us into a period of ,gnsticism1 and therefore of ,christianity1 of which very little knowledge has been handed down to us4 ,finally1 ,i wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to the scholarship of ,mr ,g4 ,r4 ,s4 ,mead1 whose labours in the field of ,hellenistic ,theology have to my mind received insufficient recognition1 and whose admirable translations ,i have often used in the notes4 #a ,not to be confused with the astral body of modern theosophy4 ,the ,gnsis of the ,light #a,this is the ,father of all ,fathers1 the ,god of is revealed a ,sonship called the ,anointed ,glorifier4 ,this is he who glorifies everyone and impresses upon him the seal of the ,father1 who brings everybody into the eternity of the ,first ,father who is the ,one1 ,he for whose sake all is and without whom nothing is4 ,now this ,anointed ,one has twelve faces1 visages ,unbounded1 ,uncontainable1 ,ineffable1 ,simple1 ,imperishable1 ,solitary1 ,unknowable1 ,invincible1 ,thrice-powerful1 ,unshakable1 ,ingenerable1 and ,pure4 ,these ,spaces1 where are these twelve founts1 named ,founts of ,reasons1 full of eternal life1 are called ,deeps as well as the ,twelve ,countenances1 because they have received in them all ,spaces of ,paternity on behalf of the ,plrmata and the ,fruit which the ,plrma emanated1 who is ,christ who has received the ,plrma in ,himself4 ,beyond all these ,spaces comes the ,deep of ,stheus4 ,this he who is in them all and is surrounded by twelve ,paternities1 even in the midst of these is he4 ,each ,paternity has three faces4 ,the first of them is an ,indivisible ,one1 and three faces has he1 ,infinite1 ,invisible1 and ,ineffable faces4 ,the ,second ,father has ,uncontainable1 ,unshakable1 and ,incorruptible faces4 ,the ,third ,father has faces ,beyond ,knowledge1 ,imperishable1 and ,aphrdonian4 ,the ,fourth ,father has a countenance of ,silence1 a face of ,founts1 and a visage ,impalpable4 ,the ,fifth ,father has ,solitary1 ,omnipotent1 and ,ingenerable faces4 ,the ,sixth ,father has the face of an ,all-,father1 the face of a ,self-,father1 and the face of a ,forefather4 ,the ,seventh ,father has countenances of ,universal ,mystery1 of ,universal ,wisdom and ,universal ,origin4 ,visages has the ,eighth ,father of ,light1 ,repose1 and ,resurrection4 ,the ,ninth ,father has faces ,knowable1 ,first ,visible1 and444 ,the ,tenth ,father has ,triple-fleshed1 ,adamic1 and ,pure faces4 ,the ,eleventh ,father has faces ,triple-powered1 ,perfect1 and ,sparkling4 ,the ,twelfth ,father has a face of ,truth1 a face of ,fore-thought1 and a face of ,after-thought4 ,these are the twelve ,paternities which encircle ,stheus4 ,their faces make in all a mystic number thirty-six4 ,these are they from whom those of the exterior have received a seal-mark1 that is why they glorify them for evermore 7#aa74 ,in that ,space there are yet twelve other paternities who encircle the head of ,stheus and support a crown there4 ,they dart out rays upon the surrounding worlds by the ,grace of the ,alone-begotten ,word1 concealed in him1 ,he that is sought for4 ,the passage enclosed within brackets has been so mutilated by the ,coptic scribe that what follows is of the nature of a paraphrase rather than of a translation3--7,as to the mysteries of the ,word that are so much beyond us1 it is not possible to describe them otherwise than as follows4 ,not possible for us1 that is4 ,it is impossible to describe ,him as ,he really is with a tongue of flesh4 ,there are glories too exalted for descriptions moved by thought and for intuition that comes through symbols1 except one finds a master who is a kinsman of the deathless race yonder4 ,from such an one can be learned something of the ,spaces from whence he came2 for he finds the root of all things4 ,the mighty powers of the great ons of the ,power that was in ,marsanes have said in adoration1 ,who is he who hath seen aught in the presence of ,his ,face8 ,that is because thus does ,he manifest ,himself 8 the ,alone to the ,alone1 ,nicotheos has spoken of ,him the ,alone-begotten and seen ,him1 for he is one of these4 ,he ,nicotheos said1 ,the ,father exists exalted above all the perfect4 ,nicotheos has revealed the ,invisible and the perfect ,triple-power4 ,all perfect men have seen ,him1 they have declared ,him and have given ,him glory with their own lips7 7#ab74 ,that is the ,alone-begotten ,word hidden in ,stheus1 ,he who is called the ,dark ,ray 7#ac71 for it is the excess of ,his light alone that is darkness4 ,stheus reigns by ,him4 ,the ,alone-begotten holds in ,his right hand twelve ,paternities1 the types of the twelve ,apostles 7#ad71 while in ,his left hand are thirty ,powers4 ,each of them emanates twelve two-faced ons after the type of ,stheus4 ,one of these faces beholds the ,deep which is in the ,interior of the ,temple of the ,plrma2 the other looks without upon the ,triple-,power4 ,each of the ,paternities in ,his right hand emanates three hundred and sixty-five powers1 according to the word that ,david spake1 saying1 ,i will cherish the crown of the year in ,thy ,righteousness4 ,for all these ,powers encircle the ,alone-begotten ,son as a crown1 illuminating the ons with the light of the ,alone-begotten1 as it is written1 ,in ,thy light shall we see light4 ,and the ,alone-begotten is lifted up upon the powers1 as again it is written1 ,the ,chariot of ,god is a myriad of multiplications2 and again1 ,there are millions of beings who rejoice2 the ,lord is in them 7#ae74 ,this is ,he who dwells in the ,monad in ,stheus1 which comes from the place concerning which one does not ask1 ,where is it8 ,she comes from ,him who is before these ,fullnesses4 ,from the ,one and ,only1 even from ,him has come forth the ,monad1 as a ship laden with all good things1 or as a full field planted with every manner of tree1 or as a city filled with men of every race and with all the statues of the king4 ,thus it is with the ,monad where the ,whole is found4 ,upon her head twelve ,monads form a crown2 each has emanated another twelve4 ,ten ,decads encircle her neck1 nine ,enneads are about her heart1 and seven ,hebdomads are under her feet1 and each has emanated a ,hebdomad4 ,the firmament which surrounds her is like a tower with twelve gates1 and at every gate are twelve myriads of powers2 archangels are they called1 or angels4 ,this is the metropolis of the ,alone-begotten ,son 7#af74 ,now it is of the ,alone-begotten that ,phsilampes 7#ag7 has said1 ,before all things is ,he4 ,he it is who has come forth from the ,infinite2 ,he who has engendered ,himself there and has no seal nor form and has given birth to ,himself4 ,this is ,he who is come forth from the ,ineffable ,one1 the ,immeasurable ,one1 who truly is1 and in whom is found all that truly is1 who is the ,father ,incomprehensible4 ,he is in ,his ,alone-begotten ,son1 while the ,all reposes in the ,ineffable and ,unspeakable ,king1 whom none can move and whose ,divinity no one can declare1 whose kingdom is not of this world4 ,meditating upon ,him1 ,phsilampes has said1 ,through ,him is ,that-which-really-is and ,that-which-really-is-not1 through which the ,hidden-which-really-is and the ,manifest-which-really-is-not exists4 ,he is the true ,alone-begotten ,god1 and all the ,fullnesses 7,plrmata7 know that it is by ,him that they have become gods and that they have become rulers in this name--,god4 ,this is ,he of whom ,john has said1 ,in the beginning was the ,word1 and the ,word was in ,god and the ,word was ,god1 and without ,him was not anything made4 ,that which was made in ,him was ,life4 ,the ,alone-begotten is found in the ,monad1 dwelling in her as in a city1 and the ,monad is in ,stheus as a concept1 and ,stheus dwells in the ,temple as ,king and as ,god4 ,he is the ,word creative1 who has commanded the ,fullnesses to labour2 the ,creative ,mind after the order of ,god the ,father1 whom all creation worships as ,god and ,lord1 to whom all is subjected4 ,the ,fullnesses wonder at ,him ,stheus because of ,his beauty and grace4 ,around ,his head those of the ,inner ,spaces of the ,universe form a crown2 those of the external spaces are beneath ,his feet1 while those of the middle spaces encircle ,him1 all praising ,him and saying1 ,holy1 ,holy1 ,holy1 ,,aaa1 ,,hhh1 ,,eee1 ,,iii1 ,,ooo1 ,,yyy1 --that is to say1 ,thou art the ,living ,one of ,living ,ones1 ,holy of ,holies1 ,being of ,beings1 ,father of ,fathers1 ,god of ,gods1 ,lord of ,lords1 ,space of ,spaces 7#ah74 ,they praise ,him1 saying1 ,thou art the ,house and the ,dweller in the ,house4 ,they praise ,him1 saying unto the ,son concealed in ,him1 ,thou art3 ,thou art1 ,o ,alone-begotten1 ,light and ,life and ,grace4 ,when ,stheus sent the ,light-,spark from the ,indivisible ,body1 it burned and gave light to all the ,space of the ,temple of the ,plrmata4 ,and they1 beholding the light of the ,spark1 rejoiced and uttered myriads and myriads of praises in honour of ,stheus and of the ,light-,spark which was manifested1 seeing that in it were all their images1 and they fashioned the ,spark among themselves as a ,man light-giving and true4 ,they named ,him ,pantomorphos1 and ,pure1 and ,unshakable1 and all the eternities also called him ,all-powered4 ,he is the ,servant of the ons and serves the ,fullnesses 7#ai74 ,and the ,father sealed the ,man ,his ,son in their interior so that they might know ,him interiorly1 and the ,word moved them to contemplate the ,invisible ,one beyond knowledge1 and they gave glory to this ,one and ,only ,one1 to the ,concept which is in ,him and to the ,intelligible ,word1 praising these ,three who are ,one1 because by ,him have they been made essential beings4 ,the ,father took their total image and made of it a ,city or a ,man and figured in ,him all those of the ,plrma1 that is to say1 all the powers4 ,each one of them knew his image in the ,city1 for everyone of the myriads of glories found himself in the ,man or ,city of the ,father which is in the ,plrma4 ,the ,father took ,his radiant glory and made thereof an outer vesture for the ,man4444 ,he created in ,him the type of the ,temple of the ,plrma4 ,he made ,his shoulders1 which came out one from the other1 after the type of those hundred myriads of powers1 less four myriads4 ,he created ,his fingers and toes like the two ,decads1 the hidden ,decad and the manifest ,decad4 ,he created ,his organ like the ,monad concealed in ,stheus4 ,he created the great reins like ,stheus4 ,he made ,his breast like the ,interior of the ,temple and ,his feet after the type of the ,solitary and ,unknowable ,ones who serve the ,plrma1 rejoicing with those that rejoice4 ,he made ,his limbs after the type of the ,deep which encloses three hundred and sixty-five ,paternities after the type of the ,paternities4 ,he fashioned ,his hair after the type of the ,worlds of the ,plrma and filled ,him with wisdom like the ,universal ,wisdom1 and filled ,him with interior mystery like ,stheus and with exterior mystery like the ,indivisible ,body4 ,incomprehensible created ,he ,him like the ,incomprehensible ,one1 who is in every ,space1 unique in the ,plrma4 ,his sides created ,he after the type of the ,four ,gates and ,his two thighs after the type of the ,myriarchs who are to the right and left1 and ,his members after the type of those who go forth and those who enter4 ,he created companions surrounding ,him after the type of concealed mysteries4444 ,this was the ,man or ,city that the ,plrmata beheld in the ,light-,spark and saw their likenesses therein4 ,they fashioned the ,man called ,pantomorphos in ,his likeness1 or clothed the ,light-,spark in the ,star-body4 ,the ,indivisible ,point sent the ,light-,spark without the ,plrma1 and ,he descended as the ,triple-,power into the ,spaces of ,autognes1 the ,self-generated ,one1 and these ,spaces beheld the grace of the ,eternities of ,light which had been given unto them1 and they rejoiced because that-which-is had come among them4 ,then they opened the firmaments and the ,light descended below to the lower regions and to those who were without form1 having no true likeness4 ,it was thus that they got the likeness of the ,light for themselves4 ,some rejoiced because the ,light had come to them1 and that they had been made rich thereby4 ,others mourned because they were made poor and that which they thought they had was taken away from them4 ,thus came ,he1 who went forth full of grace1 and was taken captive with a captivity 7#bj74 ,a light of glory was given to the ons who had received the ,spark1 and guardian spirits were sent to them who are ,gamanl1 ,etrempsouchos1 and ,agramas1 and those who are with them4 ,they bring help to those who have believed in the ,spark of ,light4 ,now in the ,space of the ,indivisible ,atom are twelve ,founts1 above which are the twelve ,paternities who surround the ,indivisible ,queen like ,deeps or like ,skies and make for ,her a crown in which is every kind of life3 all modes of ,triple-powered life1 of ,uncontainable life1 of ,infinite life1 of ,ineffable life1 of ,silent life1 of ,unknown life1 of ,solitary life1 of ,unshakable life1 of ,first-manifested life1 of ,self-born life1 of ,true life4 ,all is therein4 ,every species is in it1 all ,gnses and every power which has received the ,light1 yea1 all ,mind manifests itself therein4 ,this is the ,crown which the ,father of the ,universe has placed upon the ,indivisible ,queen with three hundred and sixty-five kinds in it1 brilliant and filling the ,universe with an incorruptible and unfailing light4 ,this is the ,crown which crowns all dominion1 the ,crown that the ,deathless pray for1 and by it and in it they will become ,invisible ,ones in the world beyond manifestation on the ,day of ,joy1 who by the ,will of the ,inscrutable ,one have from the first been manifested1 that is to say1 ,prtia1 ,pantia1 ,pangenia1 and their company4 ,then shall all the ,invisible ,eternities receive from ,him their crown1 so that they may cast themselves among the ,invisibles1 who shall receive there their crown in the ,crown of the ,indivisible ,queen1 and the ,universe shall receive its perfection of incorruption4 ,because of this it is that those who have taken bodies pray1 desiring to abandon the body that they may receive the crown laid up for them in the ,incorruptible ,eternity4 ,this is the ,indivisible ,queen and ,mother1 the first on of all1 who has been given all good things by ,him who is above all good things1 and she has been given the ,immeasurable ,deep1 wherein are found innumerable ,paternities1 whereof is the ,ennead without seal-mark and having in her the seal-marks of all creatures1 and by whom the ,ennead emanates twelve ,enneads4 ,she the ,indivisible ,mother it is who has in the midst a ,space called ,the ,land productive of ,gods1 or ,the ,land which gives birth to the ,gods 7#ba74 ,this is the land of which it has been said1 ,he who ploughs his soil shall be satisfied with bread and he shall make large his threshing floor1 and also1 ,the ,master of the ,field1 when they shall plough it1 shall possess all good things4 ,and all those ,powers which are in this land which brought forth the ,god have received the ,crown4 ,that is why they know1 because of the ,crown upon their heads1 if the ,inheritors of the ,kingdom of ,light have 8 in truth been born from the ,indivisible ,body or not3 that is1 from ,her who is the ,universal ,mother 7#bb74 ,she has within ,her seven ,wisdoms1 nine ,enneads1 ten ,decads1 and in the midst a great ,basket is revealed4 ,a mighty ,invisible ,hierarch stands above it with a mighty ,ingenerable ,hierarch and a mighty ,unbounded ,hierarch1 each one triple-countenanced1 and the prayer1 the blessing1 and the hymn of creatures are given place in this ,basket which is in the midst of the ,universal ,mother1 in the midst of the seven ,wisdoms1 in the midst of the nine ,enneads1 and in the midst of the ten ,decads4 ,for all these creatures stand upright in the ,basket1 made perfect by the ,fruit of the ons1 ,he who has been ordained for them by the ,alone-begotten concealed in the ,indivisible ,atom4 ,he the ,fruit of the ons has a ,fount before ,him surrounded by twelve ,holy ,ones1 each one wearing a ,crown on his head and having twelve powers1 who surround ,him within1 praising the ,alone-begotten king and crying1 ,it is because of ,thee that we ray forth glory1 and it is by ,thee that we behold the ,father of the ,universe1 ,,aaa1 7#bc71 and the ,mother of all the good1 ,she who is hidden in every space--that is to say1 the contriving thought 7,epinoia7 of all the ,eternities1 the conceiving thought of all gods and of all lords--,she is the ,gnsis of all the ,unseen beings1 and ,thy ,image is the ,mother of all the ,boundless ,ones1 the ,power of all the ,infinites4 ,praising the ,alone-begotten1 they cry1 ,it is because of ,thy ,image 7#bd7 that we have seen ,thee1 that we have run to ,thee1 that we have clung to ,thee1 that we have received the ,incorruptible ,crown which is known through ,her4 ,glory be to ,thee1 ,o ,alone-begotten1 for ever and ever4 ,then together do they all say ,amen4 ,for 8 ,jesus1 the ,fruit of the ons became a ,body of ,light1 ,he crossed the ons of the ,indivisible ,body until ,he came to the ,alone-begotten who is in the ,monad and who dwells in ,peace and ,solitude4 ,he received the ,grace of the ,alone-begotten--that is to say1 ,his ,christhood or ,his ,perfecting4 ,also ,he received the ,eternal ,crown4 ,he is the ,father of all ,light-,sparks1 the chief of all ,immortal bodies1 and this is ,he for whose sake resurrection is given to the body 7#be74 ,but besides the ,indivisible ,queen and besides her ,ennead without seal-mark1 in which is found all seal-marks1 there are three other ,enneads1 of which each emanates nine ,enneads4 ,in the first of these is revealed a ,basket round which three ,fathers are gathered3 an ,infinite ,father1 an ,ineffable ,father1 and an ,uncontainable ,father4 ,in the middle of the second ,ennead is a ,basket1 and three ,fathers are there3 an ,invisible ,father1 an ,ingenerable ,father1 and an ,unshakable ,father4 ,in the third ,ennead is also revealed a ,basket which encloses three ,paternities3 a ,solitary ,father1 an ,unknown ,father1 and a ,triple-,powered ,father4 ,it is through these that the ,universe has known ,god4 ,they ran towards ,him and have engendered an innumerable multitude of ons1 and in each ,ennead they offered myriads and myriads of praises4 ,in each of these ,enneads there is a ,monad1 and in each ,monad a ,space called ,incorruptible3 that is to say1 ,holy ground4 ,there is a ,fount in the ground of each of these ,monads1 and myriads and myriads of ,powers who have received on their heads a crown of the ,crown of the ,triple-,power4 ,in the middle of these ,enneads and of these ,monads is an immeasurable ,deep towards which all the ,universe looks1 those that are internal as well as those that are external1 having above it twelve ,paternities1 each surrounded by thirty ,powers4 ,the ,first ,paternity is a face of the ,infinite ,one1 and thirty infinite powers surround him4 ,the ,second paternity is a face of the ,invisible ,one and thirty invisible powers surround him4 ,the ,third paternity is a face of the ,uncontainable ,one1 and thirty uncontainable powers surround him4 ,the ,fourth paternity is a face of the ,invincible ,one and thirty invincible powers surround him4 ,the ,fifth ,paternity is a face of the ,all-powerful ,one and thirty #all-powerful powers surround him4 ,the ,sixth paternity is a face of the ,all-,wise ,one and thirty all-wise powers surround him4 ,the ,seventh paternity is a face of the ,unknown ,one and thirty unknown powers surround him4 ,the ,eighth paternity is a face of the ,solitary ,one and thirty solitary powers surround him4 ,the ,ninth paternity is a face of the ,ingenerable ,one1 and thirty ingenerable powers surround him4 ,the ,tenth paternity is a face of the ,unshakable ,one and thirty unshakable powers surround him4 ,the ,eleventh ,paternity is a face of the ,universal ,mystery1 and thirty universal mysteries surround him4 ,the ,twelfth ,paternity is a face of the ,triple-,powered ,one1 and thirty triple-powers surround him4 ,and in the midst of the ,immeasurable ,deep there are five ,powers which are called by these ineffable names3 ,the first is called ,love1 and from her comes all love4 ,the second is called ,hope1 and it is by her that we hope in the ,alone-begotten1 the ,son of ,god4 ,the third is called ,faith1 and it is by her that we believe the mysteries of the ,ineffable ,one4 ,the fourth is called ,gnsis1 and it is by her that we know the ,first ,father1 ,him because of whom we live that we may know ,him4 ,gnsis the ,mystery of ,silence1 who spake before all things1 that which is hidden1 the ,first ,monad1 for whom the ,universe became being4 ,it is upon the head of this ,mystery that the three hundred and sixty-five substances form a crown like the hair of human kind1 and the ,temple of the ,plrma is as a stairway beneath her feet4 ,this is the ,gate of ,god 7#bf74 ,the fifth is called ,peace1 and it is by her that we give ,peace to all1 to those within and to those without1 for it is in her that all things have been created4 ,this is that ,abyss ,immeasurable in which is found three hundred and sixty-five ,paternities1 thanks to whom they have devised the year4 ,this is the ,abyss which surrounds the ,temple of the ,plrma1 where is revealed the ,triple-,power with his branches and his trees1 and ,mousanios and those which belong to him4 ,there also is ,aphrdon and his twelve ,holy ,ones1 and a ,basket is in the midst of them4 ,they come to carry in it the praises1 the hymns1 the prayers and supplications of the ,mother of the ,universe1 the ,mother of the 7manifested87 worlds who is called ,phanerios 7#bg71 and to give them a form1 thanks to the twelve ,holy ,ones4 ,they send them into the ,plrma of ,stheus1 by which act they call to mind those of the external world in which there is matter4 ,this is the ,deep where the ,triple-,power rayed out the splendours of ,his glory1 after ,he had been to the ,indivisible ,mother and had received the ,grace of the ,one ,beyond ,knowledge1 by which ,he had gotten such a ,sonship that the ,fullnesses were not able to stand upright before ,him because of the excess of ,his light and brilliancy thereof4 ,the whole ,plrma was troubled1 the ,abyss and all it contained was moved1 and the ons fled to the world of the ,mother ,phanerios1 and the ,mystery ordained that the veils of the ons should be drawn until the ,overseer had established them once more4 ,and the ,overseer established the ons once more1 as it is written1 ,he has established the ,earth1 and it shall not be moved1 and again1 ,the ,earth has been dissolved and all that therein is 7#bh74 ,then the ,triple-,power went forth3 the ,son was concealed in him1 and the crown of confirmation was upon his head1 making myriads and myriads of glories4 ,they cried1 ,make straight the way of the ,lord and receive the grace of ,god3 every on which is empty shall be filled with the grace of the ,alone-begotten ,son4 ,the ,father holy and all-perfect stood above the ,deep ,immeasurable4 ,it is in ,him that all perfection is found1 and in ,his fullness have we received grace4 ,then the world was established2 it ceased to shake2 the ,father fashioned it so that it might nevermore be shaken1 and the on of the ,mother remained full of those that were in it until the ordering came from the ,mystery concealed in the ,first ,father1 ,he from whence came the ,mystery2 when ,his ,son re-established the ,universe once more in ,his ,gnsis1 that which re-enforms the ,universe4 ,then ,stheus sent the ,logos ,dmiourgos1 having with him a multitude of ,powers1 wearing the crowns on their heads2 and their crowns darted forth rays4 ,the brilliancy of their bodies is as the life of the ,space into which they are come2 the word that comes out of their mouths is life onian1 and the light that comes from their eyes is a rest for them2 the movement of their hands is their flight to the place from whence they have come1 and their gazing on their own faces is ,gnsis of their interior nature2 their going towards them is their return once more within2 the stretching forth of their hands establishes them2 the hearing of their ears is the intuition in their hearts2 the union of their limbs is the regathering of the dispersal of ,israel2 their self-understanding is their contemplation of the ,logos2 the writing upon their fingers is the number which has gone forth1 even as it is written1 ,he counteth the number of the ,stars and calleth them all by their names4 ,and the whole union was made by the ,logos ,dmiourgos with those who had come out of the turmoil that had been3 altogether they became one and the same body1 as it has been written1 ,they have all become one and the same body in this ,one and ,only ,one4 ,then this ,logos ,dmiourgos became a mighty ,god1 ,lord1 ,saviour1 ,christ1 ,king1 the ,good1 ,father1 ,mother4 ,this is ,he whose work was good3 ,he was glorified and became ,father to those that believed3 ,he became ,law in ,aphrdonia and mighty4 ,then went forth ,pandlos ,all-manifest2 she had a crown on her head1 and she placed it upon them who had believed 7#bi74 ,the ,power of the ons 8 the ,indivisible ,queen1 the ,mother within the ,plrma ordered the ,hierarchy of the ,world of the ,virgin ,mother ,phaneia1 the ,mother without the ,plrma1 she who brings into manifestation according to the ,order of the ,inner ,space4 ,she placed in it the ,light-,spark after the pattern of the ,monad and placed therein the concealment which surrounds ,him4 ,she ordained the ,propatr after the ,order of the ,indivisible ,body and the twelve ,holy ,ones which surround it1 having crowns on their heads and seals of glory in their right hands1 after the type found in the ,indivisible ,point4 ,in the midst of these is ,love2 a face of the ,triple-,power is in the ,fount1 and there is a ,basket which twelve ,paternities surround1 in whom a ,sonship is concealed4 ,she ordained the ,autopatr according to the order of the ,ennead without seal-mark and gave him authority over all that is only self-fathered1 and gave him a crown of all-glory and love1 and ,peace1 ,truth1 and myriads of powers1 so that he might gather together those who had been dispersed by the troubling which had taken place when the ,light ,spark went forth with joy4 ,as for the ,prince of the ,universe1 he who has the triple-power to make alive and to destroy1 she ordained the ,son ,prtogenntr after the order of the ,triple-,power4 ,she gave him a ninefold ,ennead and five tenfold ,decads1 and that he might have power to accomplish the warfare imposed upon him1 she gave him the first-fruits of the ,sonship concealed in her that he might be able to become a ,triple-,power4 ,he received the ,vow of the ,sonship because the ,universe 7#cj7 had been sold 8 into slavery1 and took upon him the warfare entrusted to him and made arise all that was pure in matter4 ,a world made he1 an on1 a town2 the world which is called ,incorruptibility and ,jerusalem4 ,it is also called ,the ,new ,earth1 and ,self-,perfect1 and ,without ,king4 ,this earth is an earth that brings forth gods1 a life-giving earth indeed4 ,this is the earth that the ,mother 78 ,phaneia7 asked to have established4 ,that is why she 78 the ,mother ,above7 has placed orders or hierarchy in this earth and has placed in it ,providence and ,love4 ,this is the earth of which it has been written1 ,the earth which drank the rain a multitude of times3 that is to say1 which has multiplied the light in her multitudes and multitudes of times1 since the 7light7 went forth until its return2 that is to say1 it is that from which the ,man is named ,sensible4 ,he is fashioned1 ,he has been created according to the type of this earth1 ,he who has been saved from ,his ,self dispersion by the ,prtogenntr 7#ca74 ,because of that1 the ,father of all those of the ,universe1 ,he who has no bridal bed has sent ,him18 the ,man a crown bearing the names of all those of the ,universe1 whether ,infinite or ,ineffable1 or ,uncontainable1 or ,incorruptible1 or ,unknown1 or ,solitary1 or ,all-powerful1 or ,indivisible4 ,this is the crown of which it is written1 ,they gave it unto ,solomon on the day of his exultation of heart4 ,the ,first ,monad sent ,him the ,man an ineffable vesture which is all ,light1 all ,life1 all ,love1 all ,hope1 all ,faith1 all ,wisdom1 all ,gnsis1 all ,truth1 all ,peace1 all ,witness1 all ,universal ,mother1 all ,universal ,mystery1 all ,fount1 all ,universal ,perfection1 all ,invisible1 all ,unknown1 all ,infinite1 all ,ineffable1 all ,abyss1 all ,uncontainable1 all ,fullness1 all ,silence1 all ,unshakable1 all ,unengendered1 all ,universal ,solitary1 all ,monad1 all ,ennead1 all ,dodecad1 all ,ogdoad1 all ,decad1 all ,hebdomad1 all ,hexad1 all ,pentad1 all ,tetrad1 all ,triad1 all ,dyad1 all ,monad4 ,the whole ,universe is in it1 and the ,universe has found itself therein and knows itself therein 7#bi74 ,it gave light to all in its ineffable light1 and it was given myriads and myriads of powers1 so that the ,universe might be established once and for all4 ,it gathered together its skirts and gave them the form of a veil which surrounded it the ,universe on every side4 ,it poured itself over all things1 raised them up and divided them according to the ,hierarchies1 according to the orders1 and according to ,providence4 ,then that-which-was separated itself from that-which-was-not1 and that-which-was-not was the evil manifested in matter2 and the ,robe of ,power severed that-which-was from that-which-was-not4 ,that-which-was it called onian1 and that-which-was-not it called ,hyle 7matter74 ,it separated by the ,midst that-which-was from that-which-was-not1 and placed veils between these twain4 ,it placed purifying powers1 so that they might purge them and make them clean4 ,it gave in this manner an order to that-which-is and made of the ,mother the chief4 ,it gave it ten ons1 and each on has a myriad powers2 there is also a ,monad and an ,ennead in each on4 ,the ,robe of ,power placed in her 8 ,phaneia an ,universal ,motherhood and therewith a ,power that had hitherto been concealed therein1 so that none knew thereof4 8 ,the ,robe placed a great ,basket1 above which stand three ,powers1 an ,ingenerable ,one1 an ,unshakable ,one1 and the ,great ,pure ,one4 ,it gave to 8 the world order the twelve other ,powers who have received the crown and who surround it4 ,it gave it also the ,seven ,stratelatai 7#cb71 who have the seal of the ,all-completing ,panteleios1 and have on their heads crowns in which there are twelve stones of ,adamant1 which come from ,adam1 the ,man of ,light4 ,the ,robe of ,power established the ,propatr in all the ons of the ,mother of the ,manifestation of all things1 and gave him the full power of ,paternity1 and ,powers to obey him as ,father and as ,first ,father of all that exists4 ,it placed upon his head a crown of twelve kinds2 it gave him a ,power which is ,triple-powered and ,all-powered2 it gave him ,sonship and myriads and myriads of ,glories4 ,it turned the ,plrma towards him and gave him power to make live and to destroy4 ,it gave him a power of the on so that he might manifest it1 with the myriads and myriads of out-rayed ,glories1 like the other ons that were with him4 ,the ,power which has been given to the ,propatr is called ,prtophanes1 because he is the first to be manifested1 and ,agenntos1 because no one has engendered him4 ,also ,ineffable and ,without ,name is he called1 and also ,autognes and ,autotheletos1 because he has manifested himself by his own will4 ,yet again is he named ,autoloxastos1 for he manifested himself with the ,glories that were his4 ,yet again is he termed ,invisible1 for he is hidden and none can see him4 ,now the ,robe of ,power gave unto the ,propatr another ,power1 that which since the beginning has caused the ,light-,spark to appear in this ,space1 and who is named with names ,holy and ,all-perfecting4 ,who is ,prtia1 that is to say1 the ,first1 and is also called ,pantia--she who is found in all--and ,pangenia--she who has brought forth all in the world--and ,loxogenia--she who has brought ,glory to birth--and ,loxophania--,manifester of ,glory--and ,loxokrateia--she who has dominion over ,glory--and ,arsenogenia--she who brings forth males--and ,lia--of which the interpretation is ,god with us--and ,joul--of which the interpretation is ,god for ever--she it is who has ordained that these ,powers should appear whose name is called ,phaneia1 of which the translation is ,manifestation4 ,the angel who has appeared with them is he whom the ,glories name ,loxogenes and ,loxophanes1 of which the interpretation is ,he who engenders ,glory and ,he who manifests ,glory1 for he is one of those ,glories who stand about that mighty power called ,loxokrator1 because in his manifestation he has had dominion over the great ,glories4 ,such are the ,powers that were given to the ,propatr when he was placed in the on of the ,mother1 and myriads and myriads of ,glories1 ,angels1 ,archangels1 and ,liturgies were bestowed upon him1 so that they might serve him1 those of matter4 ,they gave him power over everything4 ,he made for himself a mighty on and placed therein a mighty ,plrma and a great temple and all the ,powers that he had taken and placed within himself1 and he rejoiced with them1 bringing forth his creatures again according to the commandment of the ,father hidden in the ,silence1 ,who had sent him these riches2 and the ,crown of ,fatherhood was given to him because he had been made the ,father of all those who came after him4 ,then he cried out and said1 ,my children1 with whom ,i travail again until ,christ be formed in you2 and again he cried1 ,yea1 ,i would set beside a holy virgin an only husband1 ,christ4 ,but when he had seen the ,grace that the ,father in secret had given unto him 7that is ,himself a ,propatr71 he wished to turn the ,universe to the ,father in secret1 for it is ,his will that the ,universe should turn to ,him4 ,and when the ,mother saw all the grandeurs which had been given unto her ,propatr1 she rejoiced greatly1 she exulted2 that is why she said1 ,my heart has rejoiced and my tongue has been in exultation4 ,then she cried to the ,power ,infinite who stands hard by the on of the ,father1 that mighty ,power of ,glory that the ,glories call ,trigenielos 7#cc71 that is to say1 ,three ,engendered1 and who is named also ,trigenes and also ,harmes4 ,she prayed also unto ,him who is concealed in every ,space that ,he would send him the ,mother of ,him who has withdrawn ,himself4 ,the ,father in secret sent him the ,mystery who reclothes all the ons like the ,glories who form the ,crown ,panteles1 that is to say1 of ,perfection1 so that he the ,propatr might place the ,crown upon the head of the ,indivisible ,body hidden within her1 ,incorruptible and ,unengendered4 ,with her ,he sent the mighty ,power which is in her company1 she who is called ,arsenogenia1 who replenishes all the ons of ,glory4 ,thus from him shall the ,universe receive the ,crown4 ,then she established the ,autopatr ,father and onian ,one2 and gave unto him the on of the ,concealed ,one in which are found all things1 such as species1 faces1 images1 forms1 questions1 dissemblances1 and changes1 that which counts and that which is counted1 that which thinks and that which is thought4 ,she made a vesture thereof over all which is in him1 so that he might give to him who asked him4 ,she gave unto him ten ,powers1 and nine ,enneads1 five ons1 and she gave unto him ,light2 and that gave him power over all secret things1 so that he might show mercy to those who had fought1 who had towards the on fled from matter1 leaving it behind them4 ,they have fled to the on of the ,autopatr2 they have made their own the promise which has been promised by ,him who said1 ,he who forsakes father1 mother1 brother1 sister1 wife1 children1 and riches1 and takes up his cross and follows ,me1 shall receive the promises that ,i have promised unto him1 and ,i will give unto them the ,mystery of the ,father in ,secret1 because they have loved that which was truly theirs and have fled from him who pursues them with injustice4 ,and he ,autopatr gave them ,glory1 ,joy1 ,exaltation1 ,jubilation1 ,peace1 ,hope1 ,faith1 ,love1 and the ,truth which changes not4 ,this is the ,ennead with which he rewarded those that fled from matter2 they became happy1 they became perfect1 they knew ,god and the ,truth1 they comprehended the ,mystery which works in the ,man2 for what cause ,he has revealed ,himself1 that they might see ,him1 for ,he is in truth ,invisible2 and for their sakes ,he has revealed in words ,his ,logos1 so that they might know ,him and become gods and perfect4 ,when the ,mother established the ,prtogenntr as her son1 she gave unto him the ,power of the ,sonship2 she gave unto him armies of ,angels and ,archangels2 she gave unto him twelve ,powers who served him2 she gave unto him a robe to consummate all things in him1 for in it is revealed every kind of body3 the body of fire1 the body of water1 the body of air 8 spirit1 the body of earth1 the body of wind1 the body angelic1 the body archangelic1 the body of ,powers1 the body of ,dominions1 the body of ,gods1 the body of ,lords--in a word1 every kind of body1 so that nothing might hinder him from mounting into the heights or descending into the depths of ,noun4 ,this is the ,prtogenntr to whom those of the internal and external ,spaces have promised all things that please him1 and it is he who separates all matter2 for he brooded over it like a bird who stretches her wings over her eggs4 ,even thus did the ,prtogenntr unto matter1 and made myriads and myriads of species and kinds come forth4 ,when ,matter was warmed she produced the multitudes of ,powers that were in her1 and he separated them into species and kinds4 ,he gave them a law to love one another1 to honour ,god and to praise ,him1 and to seek for ,him1 who ,he is and what ,he is1 and to wonder at the place from whence they had come forth1 so narrow and so sad1 and not to return thither again1 but to follow him who had given them a law and made them come out of the darkness2 of ,matter1 their ,mother4 ,he had said to them1 ,let there be light4 ,for they did not know if there were such a thing as light or not4 ,then he gave them the command not to hurt one another1 and left them to go to the ,space of the ,mother of the ,universe beside the ,propatr and the ,autopatr1 so that together they might draw up those who had come forth from matter4 ,then the ,mother of the ,universe 7#cd71 the ,propatr1 the ,autopatr1 the ,prtogenntr1 and the ,powers of the on of the ,mother sang a great hymn to the ,one and ,only ,god1 praising ,him and saying3 ,thou alone art ,boundless1 ,thou only art the ,deep1 ,thou only art the ,incomprehensible ,one1 for ,thou art ,he whom all beings seek and without ,thy grace find ,thee not1 for none can know ,thee against ,thy will1 and none can praise ,thee against ,thy will4 ,for ,thy will only is a ,space for ,thee1 for nothing can contain ,thee who art the ,space for all4 ,thee ,i pray that ,thou mayest give an holy ordering to those of the ,world1 that ,thou mayest dispose my offspring according to ,thy will4 ,grieve not my offspring1 for never has anything been grieved by ,thee2 yet no one knows ,thy ,counsel4 ,of ,thee all beings of the ,inner and the ,outer ,worlds have need1 ,thou only ,incomprehensible1 ,thou only beyond ,all vision1 beyond ,all mind4 ,thou only hast given character to all creatures and hast manifested them in ,thyself4 ,of that which is not yet manifested art ,thou the ,creator1 and ,thou alone dost know these things1 for we know them not of ourselves4 ,thou alone revealest them unto us through ,symbols and ,images1 so that we may supplicate ,thee on their behalf1 so that ,thou mayest make them manifest1 and we may know them as they are in themselves apart from all ,symbols by ,thy ,grace alone4 ,thou alone hast raised up the ,secret ,worlds to ,thyself1 so that they might know ,thee1 for ,thou hast given unto them the boon of knowing ,thee1 for ,thou hast given birth unto them from ,thy ,incorporeal ,body and hast taught them that from ,thy ,self-productive ,mind ,thou hast the ,man brought forth in ,contemplation and in a perfect ,concept1 yea1 even the ,man brought forth by ,mind to whom ,contemplation has given a form4 ,thou it is who hast bestowed all good things upon the ,man1 and ,he weareth them like vestures4 ,he putteth them on like garments and wrappeth ,himself with ,creation as with a robe 7#ce74 ,this ,man is ,he whom all the ,universe yearneth to know1 for ,thou alone it is who hast ordained unto the ,man to manifest ,himself1 so that in ,him ,thou mightest be known and that all might learn that it is ,thou who hast brought ,him forth and that ,thou art manifested according to ,thy ,will4 ,thee do ,i invoke1 and ,i pray ,thee1 ,o ,father of all ,fatherhood1 ,lord of all ,lords1 to give an holy ordering unto my kinds and to my offspring1 that ,i may rejoice in ,thy ,name and in ,thy goodness1 ,o ,thou ,sole ,king1 ,o ,thou who changest not4 ,bestow upon me from ,thy goodness1 and ,i will make known unto my children that ,thou art their ,saviour 7#cf74 ,when the ,mother had finished praying to the ,boundless ,one ,beyond ,knowledge1 who fills the whole ,universe and gives life unto all1 ,he heard her and those with her1 for all of them were ,his own1 and ,he sent unto her a ,power who came forth from the ,man whom they desired to behold4 ,from ,being ,unbounded came forth the ,infinite ,spark of ,light1 at whom all the ons wondered1 asking themselves where ,he had been concealed before manifesting ,himself from the ,infinite ,father1 ,he from whom the ,universe was manifested and who was latent therein4 ,the ,powers of the ,secret ,worlds followed ,him when they were manifested and came into the ,temple of the ,plrma4 ,he hid ,himself amidst the ,powers who came forth from the ,father in ,secret 7#cg74 ,he made a world and bore it into the ,temple4 ,then the ,powers of the ,plrma beheld ,him and loved ,him and praised ,him in hymns ineffable1 unspeakable to tongues of mortal flesh1 and good to dream of in the heart of man4 ,he received their hymn and made a veil surrounding their world like a wall2 then went ,he to the borders of the ,universal ,mother without and stood above the ,universal on 7#ch74 ,the ,universe was moved at the presence of the ,lord of the whole ,earth2 the on was troubled and in suspense because it had seen that which it knew not4 ,the ,king of ,glory was seated1 ,he divided matter into two halves and into two parts 7#ci74 ,he fixed the borders of each part and taught them that they came from ,one ,father and from ,one ,mother4 ,to those who ran unto ,him and adored ,him ,he gave the place at the right hand1 and gave them ,life for ever and ever and ,immortality4 ,he named the place on the right ,the ,land of ,life1 and the place on the left ,the ,land of ,death2 ,he named the ,earth on the right ,the ,earth of ,light1 and the ,earth on the left ,the ,earth of ,darkness2 ,he named the ,earth on the right ,the ,earth of ,repose1 and the ,earth on the left ,the ,earth of ,sorrow4 ,he placed boundaries between them and veils1 so that they might not see each other2 ,he gave many ,glories to those who had adored ,him and gave them dominion over those who had resisted and opposed ,him4 ,he extended the ,world of the ,right into many places and placed them who followed ,him in each hierarchy1 in each on1 in each world1 in each heaven1 in each firmament1 in many heavens1 in each region1 in each space1 in each receptacle4 ,he gave them who had followed ,him laws and delivered unto them commandments1 saying1 ,keep ,my sayings and ,i will give unto you eternal life2 ,i will send ,powers unto you1 yea1 ,i will strengthen you with mighty spirits1 and will give unto you the dominion of your desire3 no one shall hinder your will1 and you shall bring forth ons1 worlds1 and heavens4 ,when the intellectual spirits come to dwell in you then shall ye become gods1 then shall ye know that ye came forth from ,god1 and then shall ye behold ,him within yourselves1 in your eternities shall ,he dwell4 ,these words spake the ,lord of the ,universe unto them2 then ,he withdrew ,himself from them and hid ,himself from them4 ,and those who had been the births of matter rejoiced that their thought had been accomplished2 they rejoiced because they had come forth from the narrow and the sad4 ,they prayed unto the ,hidden ,mystery1 saying1 ,give us power to create ons and worlds according to the word which ,thou hast sworn unto ,thy servants1 for ,thou alone art ,he who changest not1 ,thou alone art the ,infinite and ,boundless ,one1 ,thou only art unengendered1 born of ,thyself1 ,self-,father1 ,thou only art ,unmoved and ,unknowable1 ,thou only ,silence art and ,love and ,fount of the ,universe1 ,thou only art immaterial and hast no stain1 ineffable in ,thy generation and inconceivable in ,thy manifestation4 ,hear us1 then1 ,o ,father ,incorruptible1 ,father ,immortal1 ,god of ,hidden ,beings1 sole ,light and ,life1 ,alone beyond ,vision1 only ,unspeakable1 only ,unstainable1 only ,foundation stone of ,adamant 7#dj71 sole ,primal ,being1 for before ,thee nothing was4 ,hearken unto this prayer which we make unto ,him who is concealed in every place4 ,hear us1 send unto us incorporeal spirits that they may dwell with us and teach us that which ,thou hast promised unto us2 that they may dwell in us and that we may become bodies for them1 for it is ,thy will that it should thus be4 ,so may it be4 ,give law unto our work and strengthen it according to ,thy will and according to the order of the hidden ons2 dispose us according to ,thy will1 for we are ,thine 7#da74 ,and ,he heard them and sent unto them discerning ,powers which knew the order of those who are hidden4 ,he established the ,hierarchy like the ,hierarchies above and according to the concealed order4 ,they began from the base to the summit1 so that the building might unite them to their companions4 ,he created the aerial earth as a place of habitation for those who had come forth1 so that they might dwell therein until the strengthening of those who are below them2 then created ,he the true habitation in the interior of that1 the place of repentance in the interior of that1 the antitype of ,aerodios2 then the place of repentance in the interior of that1 the antitype of ,autognes3 in this place they baptise themselves in the name of ,autognes1 who is ,god over them1 and there are ,powers placed in this place over the ,fount of the ,waters of ,life which they make go forth4 ,these are the names of the ,powers who are over the ,waters of ,life3 ,michar and ,micheu2 and they baptise in the name of ,barpharanges4 ,in the interior of these ,spaces are the ons of ,sophia2 in the interior of these ,spaces is the ,true ,truth1 and ,pistis ,sophia is found there and also the pre-existent ,jesus the ,living1 ,aerodios and his twelve ons4 ,there are placed in this space ,sella1 ,eleinos1 ,zogenethles1 ,selmelche1 and the ,autognes of the ons4 ,there are placed in him four lights3 llthth1 ,daueithe1 roial 444 7#db74 ,he saith 7#dc73 ,o ,alone-begotten of ,light1 ,i praise ,father4 ,hear the prayer of ,thy children1 for ,thou art ,he who is hidden in every place1 ,he who is the ,desire of all hearts4 #a ,the title and the opening part of the work are lost4 ,,notes 7#a7 ,the centre of the ,universe1 which is everywhere and nowhere2 the ideal unity in diversity1 from which all things flow out and into which all things return4 ,just as ,jerusalem was held to be the centre of the earth1 so was this ,city held to be the hidden centre of the ,universe2 hence it is often named ,jerusalem ,above1 who is the ,mother of us all4 ,it is the principle at once of universality and individuality1 the real ground or centre of the soul4 ,it is called the ,house of the ,father because it is the abiding place of the ,presence2 the ,robe of the ,son because it is ,his ,body of ,manifestation 7cp4 #b ,clem4 xiv472 the ,power of the ,mother because it is the ,energy by which man is reborn into ,divine consciousness2 and the ,image or ,archetype of the ,plrma 7the ,world of ,eternal ,ideas in their ,fullness71 because it is the ,wisdom which is the basis of all consciousness4 7#b7 ,this term rather suggests the use of a vibratory formula to induce certain interior states as a practice of the ,school to which the ,greek ,,ms4 belonged4 ,perhaps this may have been ,a1 the meaning of which is given elsewhere as ,i1 because the ,all 7or ,plrma7 hath gone forth4 ,a1 because it will turn itself back again4 1 because the consummation of all consummations will take place4 ,this may be taken to mean exoterically1 1 the ,incarnation of ,jesus1 ,who is the ,plrma4 ,a1 the ,crucifixion4 1 the ,ascension4 ,taken esoterically1 it may mean1 1 the ,soul1 has come forth from ,god into generation4 ,a1 it is started or ,initiated on its return journey through the ,life of the ,cross4 1 there is union with ,god in the ,eternity of ,eternities as the consummation of all things 7cp4 note #ah74 ,the work we are studying might almost be considered an exposition of this formula1 though ,i do not suggest that it literally is so4 ,we begin by reading it from right to left1 beginning with the ,god beyond ,name1 that is ,he whose being cannot be expressed by any name1 4 ,we pass to the ,logos1 the ,divine ,mind1 ,he who can be named1 and ,his ,plrma1 ,a1 from which is started the ,visible ,world by the going forth of the ,light-,spark or ,man1 4 ,after this we read from left to right1 but this is the expounding of the mystical life1 the return1 under a veil of symbolism4 ,a is the great ,name of ,god in three vowels1 derived historically1 no doubt1 from the ,great ,name in ,judaism1 and is the counterpart of the ,indian ,,aum4 ,probably1 like this latter1 it was pronounced in three ways3 7#a7 audibly2 7#b7 inaudibly to others1 but with the lips2 7#c7 mentally4 ,it was a formula of a sacramental kind by which the life of the disciple was mystically identified with the ,life of the ,master1 so that the knowledge of the real nature of the soul is given or restored by ,god4 ,during its use the mind was1 of course1 concentrated on its inner meanings4 ,various aspects of mystical truth could be expressed by its permutations2 ,a1 ,a1 ,a1 etc4 7#c7 ,cp4 ,odes of ,solomon1 #bg3 ,i stretched out my hands and worshipped the ,lord1 for the extension of my hands is ,his sign1 and my expansion is the ,upright ,tree or ,pillar4 ,the ,cross of ,calvary was taken1 by the ,gnstics1 to be the outward and visible sign of a concealed or ,cosmic ,cross1 another aspect of the ,city or ,monad1 upon which the ,logos or ,light-,spark1 as the ,son of ,man1 or the ,man1 was crucified perpetually in an ineffable manner1 thus communicating ,his ,life and ,light to the ,universe4 ,the substance or strain of this ,cross is symbolised here by the ,ennead or ,ninefold ,being1 the members of which1 ,knowledge1 ,life1 ,hope1 etc41 are each in themselves ,ideal ,beings1 ,eternities1 or ,gods4 ,yet these ,nine1 a number typical of ,initiation1 are also one1 as the ,master and the ,cross are also one4 ,the ,mystery is that of an ,unbloody ,sacrifice once and perpetually offered and also of ,divine ,espousal4 ,see further the ,hymn of ,jesus and the ,gnstic ,crucifixion texts and commentaries by ,g4 ,r4 ,s4 ,mead1 who renders the passage in the text by ,the ,source of the ,cross is the ,man whom no man can comprehend4 7#d7 ,twelve seems to symbolise the ,powers creative of all kinds of life in their totality1 the creative imagination or raying forth power4 7#e7 ,truth is another name for the ,bride of the ,logos1 ,his ,great ,surround or ,body4 ,it is the ,divine ,concept or ,conceiving ,thought of the ,cosmos and its processes1 and hence it is also the seal of perfection or ,body of ,glory1 the ,life with which the ,risen and ,ascended ,master is clad4 ,while conferring character on all things1 it is entirely transcendent1 modeless1 and un-walled4 ,through it ,god is immanent in the ,universe1 hence it is also called ,mother4 ,this is what the symbolism seems to imply4 7#f7 ,this implies the doctrine of the ,macrocosm and the ,microcosm1 of the ,universe and of the individual soul as a perfect compendium thereof4 ,all the great cosmic processes are to be found within the soul4 7#g7 ,a name was held to be that which manifests the innermost essence of a thing4 ,hence it symbolised the spiritual body or ideal vehicle of manifestation1 the life clothing4 ,the bestowal of a new name is therefore the sacramental sign of the gift of a new body or mode of life4 ,the real and ineffable ,name of ,god is the ,concept or ,conceiving ,thought referred to in note #e4 ,but this is the ,name ,mother or ,bride of the ,logos1 ,providence4 ,to name was a sacramental way of invoking a presence or spiritual vehicle4 7#h7 ,cp4 ,codex ,akhmim3 ,of ,him it is said1 ,he thinketh ,his ,image alone and beholdeth it in the ,water of ,pure ,light which surroundeth ,him4 ,and ,his ,thought energised and revealed herself1 and stood before ,him in the ,light-,spark--which is the ,power which existed before the ,all--which is the perfect ,forethought of the ,all--the ,barbl1 the on perfect in glory--glorifying ,him1 because she hath manifested herself in ,him and thinketh ,him 7i4e4 gives ,him birth74 ,she is the first ,thought1 ,his ,image4 ,barbl seems to mean ,in the ,four is ,god3 in other words1 it is the personified ,tetragrammaton or ,great ,name commonly rendered by ,jehovah4 7#i7 ,kanoun4 ,this is a flat1 broad basket1 originally made of rush or cane1 but often manufactured in precious metals in later times4 ,it was used in the sacrificial rites of the gods and was hence classed among sacred things 7v4 ,basket in ,hastings' ,ency4 of ,rel4 and ,ethics74 ,what it signifies exactly ,i am unable to say4 ,possibly the rites of the school1 if we only knew them1 would throw some light upon the question4 ,the offerings of bread and wine at the ,eucharist may have been made in the ,kanoun4 ,sometimes in the ,,ms4 it seems to be connected with prayer4 7#aj7 ,the ,temple of the ,plrmata or ,fullnesses seems to be pictured as being in the manner of that in ,jerusalem4 ,the ons of the ,inner ,space correspond to the ,holy of ,holies1 the ons of the ,middle ,space to the ,holy ,place1 and the ons of the ,outer ,space to the ,court4 ,the various ons and their powers now described seem to be those of the ,inner ,space4 on and ,space are practically equivalent terms1 only on is on the ,mind or ,spiritual side of things1 ,space or ,extension 7,topos7 is on the ,life or ,body side of things4 ,space is purely the space of mind4 ,it is a ,spiritual ,body with many members1 each of which is a god1 having his own individual consciousness and being1 and yet partaking perfectly and wholly of a common consciousness or life4 ,each on is a mighty ,hierarchy in himself1 and his topos is a ,church or ,holy ,assembly4 ,the ideal union of these ,spaces is in the ,monad or ,indivisible ,point1 which is therefore the ,church of ,churches1 the ,body of the ,man whom no man can comprehend4 7#aa7 ,stheus and the twelve three-faced ,paternities seem to be the paradigms1 or heavenly patterns1 of the ,sun1 the signs of the ,zodiac1 and the thirty-six ,decans4 ,he is the ,invisible ,sun of ,righteousness behind the visible flame which measures time4 ,in other words1 he is the symbol of the on of ons1 the on par excellence4 ,what time is to the ordinary mundane mind that ,stheus is to the ,alone-begotten and the ,monad1 whose ineffable union he encompasses4 ,for he is the manifested ,sun of ,eternity1 7sun symbol74 ,the ,monad is the ,indivisible ,point within the circle or sphere1 and the ,light-,spark or ,logos is within the ,point1 while ,stheus himself is1 strictly speaking1 the circle or sphere1 the well-known symbol of ,eternity4 ,all the ons are found in the topos of ,stheus1 as their divinity is not innate1 but comes from conscious participation1 hence the name on4 ,i suggest the name ,stheus is formed from that of the god ,seth1 who was a solar deity in some ,egyptian traditions4 ,no doubt the differentiation of the name is intentional4 ,the twelve ,paternities about the head are referable to the rays1 to the creative powers1 the ,divine ,imaginings of the ,mystic ,sun in their totality4 7#ab7 ,schmidt thinks that the name ,nicotheos--the ,victor ,god--is a title of ,christ1 and that a quotation is given from some lost ,apocalypse1 called1 perhaps1 ,the ,apocalypse of ,nicotheos4 ,the whole passage seems to be a definite appeal to the experiences of attained mystics concerning the ,dark ,ray4 ,the ,perfect was a technical name1 applied to those whose initiation or start had been consummated or perfected4 ,having been regenerated1 they were gods or ons1 conscious of their kinship with the ,plrmata4 ,each was now a hierarchy in himself1 a race1 as it were4 ,the passage is probably by a later hand4 7#ac7 ,cp4 ,pseudo ,dionysius ,myst4 ,theol43 ,the super-unknown1 the super-luminous and loftiest height wherein the simple and absolute and unchangeable mysteries are cloaked in the super-lucent darkness of hidden mystic silence1 ,timothy1 in thy intent and practice of the mystical contemplations1 leave behind both thy senses and thy intellectual operations1 and all things known by sense and intellect1 and set thyself1 as far as may be1 to unite thyself in unknowing with ,him who is above all being and knowledge2 for by being purely free and absolute1 out of self and all things1 thou shalt be led up to the ,ray of the ,divine ,darkness1 stripped and loosed of all4 ,the above version is by ,dom ,john ,chapman1 ,o4,s4,b41 who says that this passage was cited throughout the ,middle ,ages as the locus classicus for method of contemplation4 ,this is1 except for our text1 the earliest mention of the ,dark ,ray in literature4 ,evidently ,pseudo ,dionysius did not invent the term himself1 but followed a much older ,christian tradition4 ,this fact is important for the history of ,christian mysticism4 7#ad7 ,this seems to imply a doctrine of pre-existence4 ,perhaps the passage is related to ,john #ag3af3 ,they are not of the world1 even as ,i am not of the world4444 ,as ,thou didst send ,me into the world1 even so sent ,i them into the world4 7#ae7 ,cp4 ,psalm #fh3ag 7,r4,v473 ,the chariots of ,god are twenty thousand1 even thousands upon thousands4 ,the ,lord is among them1 as in ,sinai1 in the sanctuary4 7#af7 ,further descriptions of this1 the oldest of the ons1 are given later on4 ,from these it will be gathered that the crown is the ,crown of ,life1 and that the twelve gates are also twelve deeps or firmaments1 over each of which a ,paternity presides4 ,she is called the ,indivisible ,one1 either ,point1 ,atom1 or perhaps even ,body or ,raiment4 ,as she is both the ,spouse and ,mother of the ,light-,spark within the on1 ,i have generally called her the ,indivisible ,queen4 7#ag7 ,mr ,mead suggests that ,phsilampes may be a mystery name of ,basilides4 ,has a commentary on the ,gospel of ,st ,john been used here1 or a commentary on the prologue by ,basilides containing perhaps the teachings of the alleged instructor of ,basilides1 ,glaucias1 whose name1 rather suggesting the shining one1 may equal ,phsilampes1 which interpreted ,in the beginning as meaning ,in the ,first ,concept or in the ,monad was the ,word8 7#ah7 ,this repetition of the ,seven ,vowels gives the following meanings to them3--,,aaa ,living of ,living ,ones1 ,,hhh ,holy of ,holy ,ones1 ,,eee ,being of ,beings1 ,,iii ,father of ,fatherhoods1 ,,ooo ,god of ,gods1 ,,yyy, lord of ,lords1 ,space of ,spaces or on of ons4 ,the ,high and ,holy ,one1 together with ,his ,bride and ,mother1 the ,universal ,church or ,first ,concept1 are one in and with the ,eternity that they inhabit4 ,hence ,thou art the ,house and the ,dweller in the ,house4 ,time 7on7 and ,space 7,topos7 are here one1 or different aspects of the same mode of being4 7#ai7 ,cp4 ,the ,mind unto ,hermes1 #af3 ,the ,cosmos is all-formed ,pantomorphos--not having forms external to itself1 but changing them1 itself within itself2 also the ,perfect ,sermon1 xix4 #c3 ,the thirty-six1 who have the name of ,horoscopes1 are in the self-same space as the fixed stars2 of these the essence chief or ,prince is he whom they call ,pantomorph and ,omniform1 who fashioneth the various forms for various species4 ,the ,pantomorphic ,body is the ,augoeids or ,astroeids1 the ray-like or star-like glory 7not to be confused with the astral body of modern theosophy74 ,cp4 ,origen1 ,ep4 #ch ad ,pammach3 ,another body1 a spiritual and aetherial one1 is promised us3 a body that is not subject to physical touch1 nor seen by physical eyes1 nor burdened with weight1 and which shall be metamorphosed according to the variety of regions in which it shall be4444 ,in that spiritual body the whole of us will see1 the whole hear1 the whole serve as hands1 the whole as feet4 ,the ,star-body is the body of ,resurrection and ,ascension4 ,cp4 ,mark #af3ab3 ,he was manifested in another form unto two of them4 ,also it was the body of the universal descent1 that which transmitted the ons from the ,plrma or ,ideal ,world to the ,sensible ,world1 hence it was considered to be scattered or in a state of latency1 or of mystical death in normal man4 ,to awaken it1 to gather it together1 or to raise it from the dead1 was one of the first objects of the mystics1 who followed the way of the ,gnsis4 ,its partial resurgence was the first great step in the processes of the ,apotheosis4 ,it was the possession of this body1 in some degree1 which distinguished a man as spiritual from the psychic and hylic men4 ,the ,astroeids included the natural body in its consummation1 under a great transmutation1 for it was the ,wisdom at the basis of material nature4 ,i have transferred the account of the ,city of the ,man from where it stands1 at the end of the ,,ms41 to this place1 as it seems more intelligible here1 and the exact order has been obscured by the confusion of the leaves4 7#bj7 ,cp4 ,poemandres1 #ae3 ,he the ,man1 beholding the form like to himself existing in her1 in her water1 loved it and willed to live in it3 and with the will came act1 and so he vivified the form devoid of reason4 ,and ,nature took the object of her love and wound herself completely round him1 and they were intermingled1 for they were lovers4444 ,thus1 though above the ,harmony 7or ,fate sphere71 within the ,harmony he ,the ,man hath become a slave1 444 and though he is sleepless from a sleepless ,sire1 yet is he overcome by sleep4 ,this is the ,mystery of the concealment of ,god in ,nature1 a mystery that was sometimes presented under the symbol of a self-scattering1 sometimes under the symbol of a magical sleep1 or mystic death4 7#ba7 ,the ,earth that brought forth the ,god is the ground of the individual soul1 and is also the ,sanctum ,sanctorum of the ,universe1 the ,hidden ,sanctuary where the ,man is raised from mystical death or is reborn4 ,no doubt the symbolism is drawn from ,egyptian sources4 7#bb7 ,this passage might be paraphrased1 ,those who have received ,life and ,light in the ,concealed ,sanctuary of the ,soul know1 through this ,crown of ,perfection1 that the ,inheritors of the ,kingdom of ,light are indeed reborn from the ,indivisible ,body1 who is the ,mother of us all4 7#bc7 ,,aaa ,the ,living ,space of ,spaces1 on of ons4 ,see note #ah and cp4 ,rev4 #a3h1 #ag-ah3 ,i am ,alpha and ,omega 444 the ,first and the ,last1 and the ,living ,one2 and ,i was dead1 and1 behold1 ,i am alive unto the on of ons4 7#bd7 ,the ,body of ,christ1 which in its transcendental aspect is also ,his ,bride and ,mother4 ,cp4 #b ,clem4 xiv43 ,i do not suppose that you know not that the living ,church is the body of ,christ2 for the scripture saith1 ',god made ,man1 male and female2 the male is ,christ1 the female the ,church2 and the books and the ,apostles belong not to the ,church that now is1 but to the ,church which is from above4 ,for it is spiritual1 as is our ,jesus1 but is manifested in these last days to save us4 ,but the ,church1 being spiritual1 is manifested in the flesh of ,christ4444 ,great is the ,life and ,immortality which this flesh can partake of--that is1 of the ,holy ,spirit which is joined to it--nor can any declare or utter what the ,lord has prepared for ,his chosen4' 7#be7 ,this extremely interesting and important passage is also one of great difficulty1 for it is full of technical terms and allusions which would need a small treatise to elucidate properly4 ,for example1 it seems to imply the doctrine of two ,logoi that ,clement of ,alexandria was accused of teaching1 and which is found in certain ,hellenistic writings4 ,the ,body of ,light is the ,astroeids in which the ,adept can cross the ,fate-,sphere1 the ,midst1 the regions of consciousness where mechanical cause and effect prevail and contact the ,plrma1 or ,universe of ,divine ,freedom and ,fullness4 ,charis or ,grace is the name of the ,bride or ,body of the ,logos1 and the use of it here symbolises a raiment or ,body still more exalted than the ,astroeids4 ,it is the ,body beyond the ,stars1 the ,monadic ,robe or ,robe of ,glory1 into which the ,star-like ,body was transformed at the ,horos1 ,limit or ,boundary of the ,worlds of ,difference and of ,sameness4 ,what kind of ,peace was that in which the ,alone-begotten dwelt in the ,monad8 ,a ,peace most truly given to those within and those without1 for in it all things were created4 ,to realise what is meant we must remember that ,charis and ,resurrection were names of ,staurus1 the ,pillar that made with ,horos the ,great ,cross referred to more than once4 ,peace1 then1 was the state of the ,logos in ,mystic crucifixion1 the ,peace of ,god which established1 reconciled1 justified all things4 ,hence it can be inferred what transformation the ,star ,body had to undergo to become the ,robe of ,glory4 ,the ,cross and the ,master were one4 ,the ,cross of ,calvary was to the ,gnstic ,teacher the outer and efficacious sign of this ,mystery or ,sacrament4 ,so also the ,pentecostal outpouring recorded in ,acts was the outward sign1 or sacramental token1 of the assumption by the ,master of the ,robe of ,glory1 the vesture of the ,monad or ,transcendental and ,universal ,church1 which could not be assumed here4 ,from thenceforth the band of disciples became a ,church1 the ,mystic ,body of ,christ1 the outward sign of concealed mysteries2 and it will be seen in what manner ,jesus was the ,father of all ,light-,sparks and gave resurrection to the body4 ,such was the teaching of the ,gnsis4 ,to make the matter clear to readers interested in mysticism1 but unfamiliar with ,hellenistic technical terms1 it may be said that the ,bodies so often referred to may be taken as standing for what may be called the ,life side of various stages of mystical consciousness1 as ,light stands for the ,mind side2 but ,life and ,light are one4 7#bf7 ,the ,gate of ,god4 ,cp4 the ,naasene ,document in ,hippolytus3 ,this ,mystery is the ,gate of ,heaven1 and this is the ,house of ,god1 where the ,good ,god dwells alone2 into which no impure man shall come1 no psychic1 nor fleshly man1 444 but it is kept under watch for the ,spiritual alone--where1 when they come1 they must cast away their garments1 and all become bridegrooms1 obtaining their true manhood through the ,virginal ,spirit4 ,for this is the ,virgin big with child1 conceiving and bearing a ,son--not psychic1 not fleshly1 but a blessed on of ons4 ,gnsis1 then1 was the ,mystery of ,regeneration or ,rebirth from above4 ,it will be observed that the text shows no hostility to ,faith4 ,this is an indication of early date4 ,mystery is often1 though not always1 the equivalent to ,sacrament4 7#bg7 ,there is then another ,universal ,mother1 ,phanerios or ,phaneia 7,wisdom without the ,plrma74 ,in the last resort the two ,mothers are one4 ,phaneia is the ,mother of the manifested world in which there is matter1 but she does not seem to be in exile1 as in the ,sophia ,myth4 ,like ,isis in the ,osiris legend1 she seems to have gone forth to gather together the self-scattered limbs of the ,man and to redeem ,him from captivity through the efforts of the great hierarchs that are given to her4 7#bh7 ,the pre-existence of the soul is taught1 also the loss of the memory of its true nature owing to its fall into ,matter ,hyle4 ,but this fall is not regarded as either a sin or a mistake1 but as a needful step in the mystery of ,rebirth or ,re-ordering4 ,the ,overseer is the ,mind of all ,masterhood1 the ,logos1 the ,second ,father of all4 ,it is tempting to connect the ,triple-,power with the ,triple-,bodied ,man of the ,naasene ,document and see in him the symbol of a simple ,universal ,consciousness polarised into the three states of ,spiritual1 ,psychic1 and ,material4 7#bi7 ,this ,vision of the ,advent of the ,creative ,word seems to be in part a summary and anticipation of things described otherwise later in the ,,ms4 ,after it the writer 7or writers7 goes back and describes the ,re-ordering from the time that the veils of the ons were drawn from various points of view4 ,various ,cosmic processes are delineated symbolically1 and their simultaneous working is not excluded4 7#cj7 ,the ,universal ,man had fallen into bondage in the ,fate-,sphere4 7#ca7 ,i think that what we are to understand is1 that the ,man is raised from ,his state of ,mystical ,death or ,self-dispersion by the ,prtogenntr 7,son1 ,first ,parent71 crowned with the ,lights of ,wisdom by the ,hidden ,father ,who has no consort1 and robed with cosmic life by the ,mother4 ,compare what has already been said about the ,robe of ,glory and the outward signs of its descent at ,pentecost4 ,the work of the ,mantle would seem to symbolise the re-ordering work of the ,church1 the ,new ,creation1 the new impulse on its mystical side4 ,is ,prtogenntr1 then1 a cryptic title of ,christ8 ,in a sense ,i think it is1 but there are other issues which are better discussed at a later point4 ,the ,title ,without ,king recalls the ,naasene ,document and its ,one is the ,race without a ,king which is born ,above4 7#cb7 ,the ,seven ,stratelatai1 leaders or generals1 are perhaps the seven ,planets4 7#cc7 ,cp4 the ,akhmim ,codex3 ,she 7,barbl7 is the ,first ,thought1 his ,image1 she becometh the ,first ,man2 that is the ,virginal ,spirit1 she of the triple ,manhood1 the triple-powered one1 the triple-named1 triple-born1 the on which ages not1 the ,man-woman4 #cd4 ,who are the ,mother and the three great hierarchs8 ,it is tempting to connect the three with the three traditional paths of ,purgation1 ,illumination and ,union1 ,water1 ,fire and ,spirit4 ,the ,propatr1 who desires to turn the ,world to ,god1 and who is1 through the descent of a particular power1 the ,father-,mother of the ,spiritual ,life to come1 may symbolise the process of ,purgation and the ,baptism of ,water2 the ,autopatr1 who utters the promises of ,christ and who has the power of an ,ennead of initiation1 may typify the ,illuminative ,life and the ,baptism of ,fire2 while the ,prtogenntr1 robed in cosmic consciousness1 so that he can walk even the waters of the ,primal ,deep 7,noun71 who draws forth finally from the material life1 may represent the inception of the ,life of ,union and the ,baptism of the ,spirit4 ,all this may be true1 but1 if ,i mistake not1 there is more behind the veil of symbolism1 and it is continual allusions to this more1 plain enough to the person for whom it was intended1 that renders the ,,ms4 so peculiarly difficult4 ,who is ,phaneia1 the ,mother without the ,plrma1 who owes her position to the descent of the ,royal ,robe8 ,she stands for nature in what may be called its sacramental aspect1 and she also stands for the ,churches1 if ,i mistake not1 and more particularly for the community or order to which the writer or writers belonged4 ,this implies a certain claim to a high mystical self-knowledge on the part of that community4 ,again1 the title ,son ,prtogenntr is most significant4 ,he that bore it must be the ,son of the ,sacred ,house1 the ,son of the ,doctrine1 and the ,first ,parent1 or ,father in ,god1 of those to come after4 ,he invites comparison not only with the ,saviour of the ,gospels1 but also with figures that appear in the myths of the mystery cults3 with ,horos1 the son of ,isis1 with ,hermes the ,thrice-,great1 with the ,eagle or ,father whose title represented the highest grade of the ,mithriaca4 ,i suggest that he may represent the ideal candidate in the mystery of initiation--that is to say1 he who1 by entering into himself1 has attained to the unio mystica1 has raised up the ,man within himself1 has been reborn as a god in ,divine consciousness1 and so is qualified to hand on the vital processes of the ,gnsis to others1 becoming thereby their spiritual parent4 ,so he is called ,son ,prtogenntr4 ,he is ,christ in the sense that ,galahad of the ,quest1 and ,parsifal of ,wagner's great drama are ,christ4 ,the theory of initiation as conceived in the early mystical communities seems1 in part at any rate1 to rest upon the proposition that he who has himself attained to ,union with ,god is able to start1 to initiate1 in suitable persons1 and under certain conditions1 those processes which1 under ,providence1 result in a like consummation4 ,thus we appear to have a claim in the ,,ms4 to a transmitted ,mastership in the ranks of the order going back to ,jesus ,himself3 ,for whose sake resurrection is given to the body4 ,he is the ,father of all ,light-,sparks1 ,the ,propatr and ,autopatr would seem to represent different aspects of this claim4 ,gnsis was not the possession of a body of secret ,doctrine in the sense of having a number of formal propositions containing occult information1 but a vital knowledge of the processes of ,regeneration or ,apotheosis4 ,then1 again1 we have the idea of a ,divine ,mind or ,logos manifesting ,himself through a ,body of ,universal ,consciousness1 represented sacramentally 7that is to say effectually7 in the physical world by the bodies of a body of believers4 ,the rites of this body symbolised1 again effectually1 the modes and activities of the ,body of ,universal ,consciousness of which it was the outward sign1 just as its doctrines reflected on the plane of mentation and discourse the workings of the ,divine ,mind1 which are above mentation and discourse1 though not contrary to it4 ,the acceptance of these ideas seems to have constituted ,pistis--the ,faith by which we believe in the ,mysteries of the ,man--a mode of the ,divine ,energy which resulted in good works4 ,gnsis was the knowledge of the processes by which these ideas passed from the life of formal belief and intellectual assent into the life of realised consciousness4 ,the ,hylics1 men in ,hyle or ,matter1 were the children of this world1 so absorbed in the life of the senses five that they lived like brute beasts without understanding4 ,hyle as a technical term was not always understood too literally by the ,gnstics and ,platonists 7see various passages in ,codex ,bruce71 but derived its importance as the symbol of a certain state of consciousness4 ,psychics were those whose consciousness was sufficiently aroused to accept a formal belief in viewless ,divine ,energies and to order their social conduct on the basis of that belief4 ,the ,spiritual1 the ,perfect1 those perfected in ,gnsis1 that is1 were those that were actually conscious of participating in a ,mind in common and in a ,body of transcendental energy in common4 ,this ,mind 7,logos71 ,light-,spark1 and ,body 7,monad7 constituted a sole ,being1 ,man1 or the ,son of ,man1 neither male nor female1 and yet both1 who enveloped all things1 even those of ,hyle 7v4 the ,naasene ,document7 in ,his ,infinite ,perfections1 who manifested all things1 who was concealed in all things and who was above all things4 ,an ideal ,church or ,community of ,spiritual men1 conscious of the whole ,man in each of its members1 could focus within itself1 without any robbery1 all the energies of the ,universe1 and by concentrating and applying them in a certain manner could give birth to the whole order within the consciousness of the called and chosen candidate1 who thus became a ,self-,knowing1 ,self-,fathered1 ,fore-,fathered god1 a ,race without a ,king in the name ,god4 ,his substance was enformed by the ,sacraments of the ,manifested ,order 7,phaneia71 and the substance thus enformed was finally assumed1 translated1 transformed1 what you will1 in a mode utterly beyond all symbol and image by the descent of the ,divine ,grace1 ,first ,concept1 ,ennead and ,monad ,without ,seal-,mark1 ,barbl 7again what you will71 and given final ,re-birth in the ,light of the ,mind4 ,to form an ,ideal community of this kind1 a community of gods in ,god1 by a series of grades or steps1 places of ,repentance or change slowly taken1 was1 ,i believe1 the purpose of those responsible for the original of the present ,,ms4 ,they began from the base upwards that the building might unite them to their companions--souls that in onian bliss beheld the ,face of ,god unveiled4 ,into this building plan the ,neophyte was initiated to give thereto his soul and body as a willing oblation and sacrifice4 ,it seems a reasonable suggestion to offer that this document consists of a series of meditations and spiritual exercises given to the candidate before one of the inner initiations or sacramental starts that was consummated beyond the veil of signs and symbols4 ,for such an end not only ,faith1 not only a reasonable ,foundation in an accepted philosophy1 that of ,plato1 but an ,imagination intensified into intuition was needed4 ,hence these strange hieroglyphs on the expressed veil4 ,the ,child of ,fire must behold rising within himself from the ,immeasurable ,abyss of ,godhead the five-rayed morning star of ,love1 ,faith1 ,hope1 ,gnsis1 and ,peace1 the herald of the ,perfect ,dawn of a ,new ,birth4 ,possibly ,propatr1 ,autopatr and ,prtogenntr may also have been the official designations of hierophants in the sacramental side of some ,mystery consummated in solitude1 from which the candidate returned an ,epopt4 7#ce7 ,cp4 ,ps4 #ajd3a1 #b3 ,thou art clothed with honour and majesty3 who coverest thyself with light as with a garment4 7#cf7 ,this hymn or prayer seems to be an invocation to the ,dark ,ray on behalf of the candidate 7and also for the building up of the ,ideal ,order74 ,the consummation1 beyond all signs and images1 is in the hands of ,god alone4 ,a start may be effected by duly qualified hierophants under certain conditions1 but the crown ,pantelos is given by the ,father of all ,fatherhood alone4 7#cg7 ,this looks as if in this system the ,fruit of the ,plrma was also the ,father of the ,fullnesses4 ,the phrase ,he made a world and bore it into the ,temple seems to mean that ,he assumed a body of manifestation4 7#ch7 ,the veil which surrounded the ,plrma or ,world of ,divine ,ideas was called ,stauros 7,cross7 and ,horos 7,boundary74 ,cp4 ,hippolytus 7vi4 #c73 ,now it is called ',boundary' because it bounds off the ,deficiency from the ,fullness so as to make it exterior to it4 ,it is called ,partaker because it partakes of the ,deficiency as well2 and it is called ',cross' because it hath been fixed immovably and unchangeably1 so that nothing of the ,deficiency should be able to approach the ons within the ,fullness4 ,see also the ,gnstic ,crucifixion1 #i1 #aj1 #aa 7,acts of ,john73 ,the ,cross is the defining 7or delimitation7 of all things1 both the firm necessity of things fixed from things unstable1 and the harmony of wisdom4 ,and as it is ,wisdom in ,harmony1 there are those on the ,right and those on the ,left--powers1 authorities1 principalities and daemons1 energies1 threats1 powers of wrath1 slanderings--and the ,lower ,root from which hath come forth the things in genesis4 ,this1 then1 is the ,cross which by the ,word hath been the means of ',cross-beaming' all things--at the same time separating off the things that proceed from genesis and those below from those above1 and also compacting them all into one4 ,the ,mantle in which the ,man is clad and which severs and orders all things is evidently another aspect of the same idea4 ,the use of the term veil is suggestive1 as the term is so often employed in ,hellenistic ,mysticism in connection with ,initiation4 ,finally1 it is just worth noting that it is possible that what ,origen has to say about the self-limitation of ,god is influenced by the tradition concerning the ,horos or ,boundary4 7#ci7 ,this is undoubtedly a reference to the ,mystical ,crucifixion so often mentioned in previous notes4 ,it is the ,master ,symbol of the ,unitive ,state1 of the reconciliation and union of ,god and ,man1 and of the participation of the individual in the ,universal4 ,its presence at this point of the text is most suggestive4 ,the candidate1 the ,birth of ,matter1 stands1 mystically at any rate1 before the ,veil at the ,foot of the ,cross4 ,to pass the ,veil and to enter into the ,fullness means being united with the ,master in ,his ,passion and ,crucifixion4 ,the ,cross is evidently a ,tau1 and ,i suggest that the frontispiece may represent this ,mystery1 the ,crucifixion of the on1 ,o1 upon ,staurus1 the ,cross and the ,master being ,one1 ,a and ,a4 ,the meaning of ,,xmi is unknown4 ,it has been suggested that it is 7with ,,eic ,,theos7 a symbol of the ,trinity in ,unity1 or a veil of the ,divine ,name4 7#dj7 ,the terms ,i have translated as ,sole ,unstainable1 ,sole ,foundation-stone of ,adamant are ,amiantos1 ,adamantos4 ,besides meaning unstainable1 ,amiantos was the name of a pale green stone4 ,readers interested in the legend of the ,graal will recall that the ,graal is represented as a green stone in the ,parzival of ,von ,eschenbach4 ,adamantos is diamond4 ,here and in the account of the ,monad as the ,metropolis of ,monogenes1 filled with men of every race and with all the statues of the king1 there is a curious parallel to be found to a happening in the life of ,saint ,theresa4 ,being once in prayer1 she says1 the ,diamond was represented to me like a flash2 although ,i saw nothing formed1 still1 it was a representation with all clearness how all things are seen in ,god1 and how all are contained in ,him4444 ,let us say that the ,divinity is like a very lustrous ,diamond1 larger than all the world1 or like a mirror--and all that we do is seen in this ,diamond1 it being so fashioned that it includes everything within itself1 because there is nothing but what is contained in this magnitude4 ,i have ventured to insert ,foundation because ,i think that there is a punning allusion to ,adamas4 ,cp4 ,naasene ,document3 ,the 'rock' means ,adamas4 ,this is the corner-stone 444 which ,i insert in the foundation of ,zion4 ,by this he means allegorically the plasm of man4 ,for ,adamas1 who is inserted in the inner ,man1 and the foundations of ,zion are 444 the wall and palisade 7sc4 ,horos7 in which is the inner ,man4 7#da7 ,the prayer seems to be for the transmutation of the members of the order by mystical marriages with their archetypal selves1 that the mysteries of the ,crucifixion1 ,resurrection1 ,ascension1 and of the ,descent of the ,paraclete may be realised after a certain manner4 7#db7 ,compare this passage with what has already been said concerning an attempt to form an ,ideal ,order4 ,a place of ,metanoia implies here a radical change of the whole being rather than repentance as ordinarily understood4 ,the topos of ,autognes1 the ,self-begotten1 was the first station of the journey of the ,light-,spark without the ,plrma1 and is the last station of the return within4 ,the extant ,gospel of ,mary 7,codex ,akhmim71 which was reviewed by ,irenaeus1 and was therefore composed before #ahj ,a4,d41 states that from the ,light of the ,christ and the ,incorruptible proceed forth four great ,lights to surround ,autognes4 ,their names are ,harmozel1 roial1 ,daveithi1 and llth4 ,irenaeus says1 ,charis ,grace was conjoined with the great and first ,luminary1 and this they will have to be the ,saviour and call him ,harmogen--the ,harmes-begotten4 ,the name ,harmes appears in the present ,,ms41 and is evidently a name for ,barbl4 ,these things are important for the date of the ,greek original4 ,the allusions to ,pistis-,sophia are probably interpolated2 there seems to be no room for her adventures in the scheme of the text4 ,but what are we to make of the mysterious ,baptism in the name of ,barpharanges8 ,does ,barpharanges 7the meaning of which no one seems to know7 simply ,harmogenes the begotten from ,barbl1 the ,virginal ,spirit1 the ,image seen in the pure water of ,light8 ,if so1 then we have in all probability an allusion to the ,gnstic ,baptism with the ,holy ,spirit or ,light4 ,harmogenes will be the ,child of the ,mystical ,marriage with the ,virginal ,spirit by which the ,spiritual recover their true manhood1 a blessed on of ons3 that is to say1 that the ,epopt himself is mystically ,autognes1 the ,self-begotten1 having been reborn a god in ,god4 ,the rest of the text is missing4 #dc4 ,this ,hymn to the ,light seems to stand in some close connection with the text we have been discussing4 ,if what has been suggested concerning the contents of the ,greek original should prove correct1 both the nature and position of the ,hymn become plain4 ,it consists of various acts of the will not altogether unlike some of those prescribed in certain ,catholic manuals for those in the ,unitive way4 ,it is the form of ,prayer given by the ,director or ,master to his disciple1 to be used together with the ,,ms4 as part of his preparation for1 what ,i believe to be1 the ,baptism of ,light4 ,a large part of the ,hymn seems to be missing owing to the state of the ,,ms41 and the order is uncertain4 ,,printed ,,in ,,great ,,britain ,,by ,,neill ,,and ,,co41 ,,ltd41 ,,edinburgh4 ,,john ,m4 ,,watkins ,cloth1 ,f'cap #hvo4 ,price ,i must say that this book1 ',aurora1' hath conduced more to open my mind to the understanding of all his writings1 and of all ,mysteries1 both natural and divine 7and so1 consequently1 of the ,holy ,scriptures7 than any other helps and books which ,i could ever meet withal besides4444 ,in his ',aurora' the ground of those terms the succinct1 very deeply expressed terms employed in his later books is largely and plainly described in a childish way1 after the manner of the infancy of his high manifestation2 so that it is a large and most clear ,,abc1 being the fitter and plainer for beginners1 and with his other books may the easier be understood2 and it is a summary contents of all his ,mysteries1 and may serve instead of a manuduction1 introduction1 and key to unlock all the
