scruple to declare the whole counsel of ,god--rightly dividing the word of truth1 to all classes of hearers4 ,he must warn the openly wicked man that if he persists in his evil courses1 the just judgments of ,god will inevitably overtake him2 he must unmask the hypocrite2 he must utter no uncertain protest against the crooked and devious ways of the self-seeker and the time-server4 ,but if he enters into the ,spirit of his ,master1 no part of his public work will be more congenial or delightful than the proclamation of the full1 free1 and sovereign grace of ,god1 manifested towards sinful men in the gift of ,his ,eternal ,son1 to be the ,saviour of the world4 ,it has been my happy privilege in years past to tell out1 as best ,i could1 this wonderful story of redeeming grace4 ,the following pages record the addresses ,i have given on the various aspects of this great subject4 ,i pray ,god that in their printed form they may serve to deepen in the mind of the reader the appreciation of this grace1 at once so infinite and so undeserved4 ,the chapter entitled ,a ,chime of ,gospel ,bells1 though not strictly flowing out of the general subject1 is in perfect harmony with it2 every note in the chime is intended to ring out the gracious invitation to ,come to the ,god of all grace and be blessed4 ,the ,dialogues which form the latter part of the book were heard with much interest and profit at some of the ,london meetings2 ,i think the perusal of them will be helpful in removing many of the hindrances that prevent anxious inquirers from accepting without delay ,,fountain ,,of ,,grace4 ,,there are some words with which we have been familiar from our infancy up1 and probably there are few words in the ,english language that are so often used as this word ,,grace4 ,many of you at your table say grace three times a day4 ,you seldom go into a church without hearing the word mentioned4 ,you seldom read any part of the ,new ,testament1 especially the ,epistles1 without meeting the word4 ,there is probably not a word in the language so little understood4 ,there are a great many who have received the grace of ,god into their heart1 but who1 if they should be asked what the word means would be troubled1 and confused1 and unable to tell4 ,i experienced the grace of ,god a good many years before ,i really knew the true meaning of the word4 ,now1 grace means unmerited mercy--undeserved favor4 ,if men were to wake up to the fact1 they would not be talking about their own worthiness when we ask them to come to ,christ4 ,when the truth dawns upon them that ,christ came to save the unworthy1 then they will accept salvation4 ,peter calls ,god the ,god of all grace4 ,men talk about grace1 but1 as a rule1 they know very little about it4 ,let a business man go to one of your bankers to borrow a few hundred dollars for sixty or ninety days2 if he is well able to pay1 the banker will perhaps lend him the money if he can get another responsible man to sign the note with him4 ,they give what they call three days' grace after the sixty or ninety days have expired2 but they will make the borrower pay interest on the money during these three days1 and if he does not return principal and interest at the appointed time1 they will sell his goods2 they will perhaps turn him out of his house1 and take the last piece of furniture in his possession4 ,that is not grace at all2 but that fairly illustrates man's idea of it4 ,grace not only frees you from payment of the interest1 but of the principal also4 ,,its ,,source4 ,in the ,gospel by ,john we read1 ,the ,word was made flesh and dwelt among us1 and we beheld ,his glory1 the glory as of the ,only-begotten of the ,father1 full of grace and truth 4 4 4 ,for the law was given by ,moses1 but grace and truth came by ,jesus ,christ4 ,now you know that for many years men were constantly trying to find the source of the ,nile4 ,the river of grace has been flowing through this dark earth for six thousand years1 and we certainly ought to be more anxious to find out its source than to discover the source of the ,nile4 ,i think if you will read your ,bible carefully you will find that this wonderful river of grace comes right from the very heart of ,god4 ,i remember being in ,texas a few years ago1 in a place where the country was very dry and parched4 ,in that dry country there is a beautiful river that springs right out of the ground4 ,it flows along2 and on both sides of the river you find life and vegetation4 ,grace flows like that river2 and you can trace its source right up to the very heart of ,god4 ,you may say that its highest manifestation was seen when ,god gave the ,son of ,his bosom to save this lost world4 ,not as the offense1 so also is the free gift4 ,for if through the offense of one many be dead1 much more the grace of ,god1 and the gift by grace1 which is by one man1 ,jesus ,christ1 hath abounded unto many4 ,a ,,free ,,gift4 ,notice1 it is the free gift of ,god4 ,grace be unto you1 and peace1 from ,god our ,father1 and from the ,lord ,jesus ,christ4 ,i thank my ,god always on your behalf1 for the grace of ,god which is given you by ,jesus ,christ4 ,paul wrote fourteen ,epistles2 and every one of them is closed with a prayer for grace4 ,paul calls it ,the free gift of ,god4 ,thousands have been kept out of the kingdom of ,god because they do not realize what this free gift is4 ,they think they must do something to merit salvation4 ,the first promise given to fallen man was a promise of grace4 ,god never promised ,adam anything when ,he put him in ,eden4 ,god never entered into a covenant with him as ,he did with ,abraham4 ,god told him of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil thou shalt not eat of it3 for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die2 but when this came to pass then ,god came and gave him a gracious promise4 ,he dealt in grace with him4 ,as he left the ,garden of ,eden he could say to ,eve1 ,well1 ,god does love us1 though ,he has driven us out4 ,there was no sign that ,adam recognized his lost condition4 ,as far as we know there was no cry for mercy or pardon1 no confession of sin4 ,yet we find that ,god dealt in grace with him4 ,god sought ,adam out that he might bestow ,his grace upon him4 ,he met ,adam in his lost and ruined condition1 and the first thing ,he did was to proclaim the promise of a coming ,saviour4 ,for six thousand years1 ,god has been trying to teach the world this great and glorious truth--that ,he wants to deal with man in love and in grace4 ,it runs right through the ,bible2 all along you find this stream of grace flowing4 ,the very last promise in the closing chapter of ,revelation1 like the first promise in ,eden1 is a promise of grace3 ,whosoever will1 let him take the water of life freely4 ,so the whole revelation1 and the whole history of man is encircled with grace1 the free favor of ,god4 ,some years ago when ,i was speaking on this subject1 a friend sent me the following3 ,by the grace of ,god ,i am what ,i am6 ,this is the believer's eternal confession4 ,grace found him a rebel--it leaves him a son4 ,grace found him wandering at the gates of hell--it leads him through the gates of heaven4 ,grace devised the scheme of ,redemption3 ,justice never would2 ,reason never could4 ,and it is grace which carries out that scheme4 ,no sinner would ever have sought his ,god but 'by grace4' ,the thickets of ,eden would have proved ,adam's grave1 had not grace called him out4 ,saul would have lived and died the haughty self-righteous persecutor had not grace laid him low4 ,the thief would have continued breathing out his blasphemies1 had not grace arrested his tongue and tuned it for glory4 ',out of the knottiest timber1' says ,rutherford1 ',he can make vessels of mercy for service in the high palace of glory4' ',i came1 ,i saw1 ,i conquered1' says ,toplady1 'may be inscribed by the ,saviour on every monument of grace4' ',i came to the sinner2 ,i looked upon him2 and with a look of omnipotent love1 ,i conquered4' ,my friend1 we would have been this day wandering stars1 to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness--,christless--hopeless --portionless--had not grace invited us1 and grace constrained us4 ,,restraining ,,grace4 ,it is grace which1 at this moment1 keeps us4 ,we have often been a ,peter--forsaking our ,lord1 but brought back to him again4 ,why not a ,demas or a ,judas8 ',i have prayed for thee that thy faith fail not4' ,is not this our own comment and reflection on life's retrospect8 ',yet not ,i1 but the grace of ,god which was with me4' ,oh1 let us seek to realize our continual dependence on this grace every moment6 ',more grace6 more grace6' should be our continual cry4 ,but the infinite supply is commensurate with the infinite need4 ,the treasury of grace1 though always emptying is always full3 the key of prayer which opens it is always at hand3 and the almighty ,almoner of the blessings of grace is always waiting to the gracious4 ,the recorded promise never can be canceled or reversed--',my grace is sufficient for thee4' ,let us seek to dwell much on this inexhaustible theme4 ,the grace of ,god is the source of minor temporal as well as of higher spiritual blessings4 ,it accounts for the crumb of daily bread as well as for the crown of eternal glory4 ,but even in regard to earthly mercies1 never forget the channel of grace through ,christ ,jesus4 ,it is sweet thus to connect every 7even the smallest and humblest7 token of providential bounty with ,calvary's ,cross--to have the common blessings of life stamped with the print of the nails2 it makes them doubly precious to think this flows from ,jesus4 ,let others be contented with the uncovenanted mercies of ,god4 ,be it ours to say as the children of grace and heirs of glory--',our ,father which art in heaven1 give us this day our daily bread4' ,nay1 reposing in the all-sufficiency in all things1 promised by 'the ,god of all grace4' ,,chapter ,,ii4 ,,saved ,,by ,,grace ,,alone4 ,i ,,want to call your special attention to the fact that we are saved by grace alone1 not by works and grace4 ,a great many people think that they can be saved by works4 ,others think that salvation may be attained by works and grace together4 ,they need to have their eyes opened to see that the gift of ,god is free and apart from works4 ,for by grace are ye saved through faith2 and that not of yourselves1 it is the gift of ,god4 ,not of works1 lest any man should boast4 ,many people would put it thus3 ,for by your works are ye saved1--or by your tears1 or your prayers1 or your fastings1 or your trials1 or your good resolutions1 or your money6 ,but ,paul tells us plainly that it is not of works1 lest any man should boast4 ,if we could be saved by works1 then of course ,christ's mission to this world was a mistake4 ,there was no need for ,him to come4 ,what had ,paul ever done that could merit salvation8 ,up to the time that ,christ called him he had done everything he could against ,christ and against ,christianity4 ,he was in the very act of going to ,damascus to cast into prison every ,christian he could find4 ,if he had not been stopped1 many of them would probably have been put to death4 ,it was ,paul1 you remember1 who cheered on the mob that stoned ,stephen4 ,yet we find that when ,christ met him ,he dealt in grace with him4 ,no apostle says so much against salvation by works before the cross1 as ,paul2 and none says so much about works after the cross4 ,he put works in their right place4 ,i have very little sympathy with any man who has been redeemed by the precious blood of the ,son of ,god1 and who has not got the spirit of work4 ,if we are children of ,god we ought not to have a lazy drop of blood in our veins4 ,if a man tells me that he has been saved1 and does not desire to work for the honor of ,god1 ,i doubt his salvation4 ,laziness belongs to the old creation1 not to the new4 ,in all my experience ,i never knew a lazy man to be converted--never4 ,i have more hope of the salvation of drunkards1 and thieves1 and harlots1 than of a lazy man4 ,,what ,,the ,,thirty-,,nine ,,articles ,,say4 ,i find some people have accused me of teaching heresy1 because ,i say salvation is all of grace4 ,i remember once1 a clergyman said ,i was teaching false doctrine because ,i said salvation was all of grace4 ,he said that works had as much to do with our salvation as grace4 ,at that time ,i had never read the ,thirty-,nine ,articles2 if ,i had ,i should have been ready to meet him4 ,i got the ,prayer ,book1 and looked through the ,thirty-,nine ,articles2 and ,i found1 to my amazement1 that they put it a good deal stronger than ,i had done4 ,let us hear what they say-- ,,xi4 ,of the ,justification of ,man4 ,we are accounted righteous before ,god1 only for the merit of our ,lord and ,saviour ,jesus ,christ by ,faith1 and not for our own works or deservings3 ,wherefore1 that we are justified by ,faith only1 is a most wholesome doctrine1 and very full of comfort4 ,,xii4 ,of ,good ,works4 ,albeit that ,good ,works1 which are the fruits of ,faith1 and follow after ,justification1 cannot put away our sins1 and endure the severity of ,god's judgment2 yet are they pleasing and acceptable to ,god in ,christ1 and do spring out necessarily of a true and lively ,faith2 insomuch that by them a lively ,faith may be as evidently known as a tree discerned by the fruit4 ,,xiii4 ,of ,works ,before ,justification4 ,works done before the grace of ,christ1 and the inspiration of ,his ,spirit1 are not pleasant to ,god2 forasmuch as they spring not of faith in ,jesus ,christ1 neither do they make men meet to receive grace1 or 7as the school-authors say7 deserve grace of congruity3 yea rather1 for that they are not done as ,god hath willed and commanded them to be done1 we doubt not but they have the nature of sin4 ,that is stronger than ,i ever put it4 ,these ,articles say of works before justification that they have the nature of sin4 ,i never called them sin6 ,so you see this is not any new doctrine that we are preaching4 ,when the church and the world wake up to the fact that works before salvation go for nought1 then--and not till then1 ,i believe--men will come flocking into the kingdom of ,god by hundreds4 ,we work from the cross1 not to it4 ,,we work because we are saved1 not in order to be saved4 ,we work from salvation1 not up to it4 ,salvation is the gift of ,god4 ,you have heard the ,prayer ,book3 now hear paul2 ,abraham believed ,god2 and it was counted unto him for righteousness4 ,now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace1 but of debt4 ,but to him that worketh not1 but believeth on ,him that justifieth the ungodly1 his faith is counted for righteousness4 ,notice what the ,apostle says3 ,to him that worketh not4 ,that is plain language1 is it not8 ,i may perhaps startle some of you by saying that many of you have been kept out of the kingdom of ,god by your good works4 ,nevertheless it is true4 ,if you put works in the place of faith1 they become a snare to you4 ,it is to him that worketh not1 but believeth4 ,i freely admit salvation is worth working for2 it is worth a man's going round the world on his hands and knees1 climbing its mountains1 crossing its valleys1 swimming its rivers1 going through all manner of hardship in order to attain it4 ,but we do not get it in that way4 ,paul went through all the trials and hardships he had to endure1 because by the grace of ,god resting on him he was enabled to do so4 ,,penance ,,for ,,sin4 ,would you insult the ,almighty by offering ,him the fruits of this frail body to atone for sin8 ,supposing your ,queen were to send me a magnificent present1 and ,i said to the royal messenger3 ,i certainly should not like to accept this from ,her ,majesty without giving her something in return4 ,suppose ,i should send her a penny6 ,how would the ,queen feel1 if ,i were to insult her in that way8 ,and what have we that we can offer to ,god in return for ,his free gift of salvation8 ,less than nothing4 ,we must come and take salvation in ,god's way4 ,there is no merit in taking a gift4 ,if a beggar comes to my house1 and asks for bread to eat1 and ,i give him a loaf of bread1 there is no merit in his taking the bread4 ,so if you experience the favor of ,god1 you have to take it as a beggar4 ,some one has said3 ,if you come to ,god as a prince1 you go away as a beggar3 if you come as a beggar1 you go away as a prince4 ,it is to the needy that ,god opens the wardrobe of heaven1 and brings out the robe of righteousness4 ,paul says again3 ,if by grace1 then is it no more of works3 otherwise grace is no more grace4 ,but if it be of works1 then is it no more grace3 otherwise work is no more work4 ,paul is reasoning in this way3 that if ,i work for a gift or attempt to give money for it1 it ceases to be a gift4 ,the only way to get a gift is to take it as a gift4 ,an old man got up in one of our meetings and said1 ,i have been forty-two years learning three things4 ,i pricked up my ears at that2 ,i thought that if ,i could find out in about three minutes what a man had taken forty-two years to learn1 ,i should like to do it4 ,the first thing he said he had learned was that he could do nothing towards his own salvation4 ,well1 said ,i to myself1 that is worth learning4 ,the second thing he had found out was that ,god did not require him to do anything4 ,well1 that was worth finding out too4 ,and the third thing was that the ,lord ,jesus ,christ had done it all1 that salvation was finished1 and that all he had to do was to take it4 ,dear friends1 let us learn this lesson2 let us give up our struggling and striving1 and accept salvation at once4 ,a ,,free ,,pardon4 ,i was preaching in the ,southern ,states a few years ago2 and the minister called my attention to one of the elders in his ,church4 ,he said3 ,when the civil war broke out1 that man was in one of the far ,southern ,states1 and he enlisted into the ,southern army4 ,he was selected by the ,southern ,general as a spy1 and sent to spy out the ,northern army4 ,as you know1 armies have no mercy on spies1 if they can catch them4 ,this man was caught4 ,he was tried by court-martial1 and ordered to be shot4 ,while he was in the guard-room1 previous to the time of execution1 the ,northern soldiers used to bring him his rations4 ,every time they came to his cell he would call ,abraham ,lincoln by every vile epithet he could think of4 ,it seemed as though he lay awake nights trying to study such names4 ,at last the soldiers got so angry that they said they would be glad when the bullet went through his heart4 ,some of them even said they would like to put a bullet through him2 and if they were not obliged by military order to feed him1 they would let him starve in the prison4 ,they thought that was what he deserved for talking so unjustly of ,lincoln4 ,one day while he was in the prison1 waiting to be led out to execution1 a ,northern officer came to the cell4 ,the prisoner1 full of rage1 thought his time was come to be shot4 ,the officer opened the prison door1 and handed him a free pardon from ,abraham ,lincoln6 ,he told him he was at liberty2 he could go to his wife and children6 ,the man who had before been so full of bitterness1 and malice1 and rage1 suddenly quieted down1 and said1 ,what6 has ,abraham ,lincoln pardoned me8 ,for what8 ,i never said a good word about him4 ,the officer said1 ,if you had what you deserved you would be shot4 ,but some one interceded for you at ,washington and obtained your pardon2 you are now at liberty4 ,the minister1 as he told me1 said that this act of undeserved kindness quite broke the man's heart and led to his conversion4 ,said the minister1 ,you let any man speak one word against ,abraham ,lincoln now in the hearing of that man1 and see what will happen4 ,there is not a man in all the ,republic of ,america1 ,i believe1 who has a kinder feeling towards our late ,president than he4 ,now that is grace4 ,the man did not deserve a pardon4 ,but this is exactly what grace is3 undeserved mercy4 ,you may have been a rebel against ,god up to this very hour2 but if you acknowledge your rebellion1 and are willing to take the mercy that ,god offers1 you can have it freely4 ,it is there for every soul on the face of the earth4 ,the grace of ,god that bringeth salvation to all men hath appeared4 ,thank ,god for that6 ,salvation by grace is for all men4 ,if we are lost1 it will not be because ,god has not provided a ,saviour1 but because we spurn the gift of ,god--because we dash the cup of salvation from us4 ,what says ,christ8 ,you remember that when ,he was on earth1 they came to ,him and asked what they should do to work the works of ,god4 ,he had been telling them to labor not for the bread that perisheth1 but for the meat that endureth unto everlasting life4 ,then they asked ,him1 ,what shall we do that we may work the works of ,god8 ,what did ,jesus tell them to do8 ,did ,he tell them to go and feed the hungry1 to clothe the naked1 to visit the widow and the fatherless in their affliction8 ,perhaps you may say that1 according to ,scripture1 is pure and undefiled religion4 ,granted2 but something comes before that4 ,that is all right and necessary in its place4 ,but when these men wanted to know what they had to do to inherit eternal life1 ,jesus said3 ,this is the work of ,god1 that ye believe on ,him whom ,he hath sent4 ,,you ,,can ,,believe4 ,a friend lately called my attention to the fact that ,god has put the offer of salvation in such a way that the whole world can lay hold of it4 ,all men can believe4 ,a lame man might not perhaps be able to visit the sick2 but he can believe4 ,a blind man by reason of his infirmity cannot do many things2 but he can believe4 ,a deaf man can believe4 ,a dying man can believe4 ,god has put salvation so simply that the young and the old1 the wise and the foolish1 the rich and the poor1 can all believe if they will4 ,do you think that ,christ would have come down from heaven1 would have gone to ,gethsemane and to ,golgotha1 would have suffered as ,he did1 if man could have worked his way up to heaven8--if he could have merited salvation by his own efforts8 ,i think if you give five minutes' consideration to this question you will see1 that if man could have saved himself ,christ need not have suffered at all4 ,remember1 too1 what ,christ says3 ,he that climbeth up some other way1 the same is a thief and a robber4 ,he has marked out the way to ,god4 ,he has opened up a new and shining way1 and ,he wants us to take ,his way4 ,certainly the attempt to work our way up to heaven is climbing up some other way1 is it not8 ,if ever a man did succeed in working his way into heaven we should never hear the last of it6 ,i have got so terribly sick of these so-called self-made men4 ,there are some men whom you cannot approach without hearing them blow their trumpet1 saying1 ,i am a self-made man4 ,i came here a poor man ten years ago2 and now ,i am rich4 ,it is all ,i--,i--,i6 ,they go on boasting1 and telling what wonderful beings they are6 ,there is one thing that is excluded from the kingdom of heaven2 and that is--boasting4 ,if you and ,i ever get there it will be by the sovereign grace of ,god4 ,there will be no credit due to ourselves4 ,saved by grace alone6 ,this is all my plea3 ,jesus died for all mankind1 ,and ,jesus died for me4 ,,chapter ,,iii4 ,,possessing1 ,,and ,,working ,,out4 ,i ,,can imagine some one asking3 ,what does that passage mean--,work out your own salvation with fear and trembling8 ,well1 ,i want you to emphasize the word your3 ,work out your salvation4 ,that is most important4 ,you hear people talk of working out salvation1 when all the time they have not got it4 ,how can you work out what you do not possess8 ,paul is here writing to the ,christians at ,philippi4 ,they were already saved by the grace of ,god4 ,now that they had got this wonderful gift1 he says3 ,go1 work it out4 ,when you see a person working for salvation1 you may know that he has got a false idea of the teaching of the ,scripture4 ,we have salvation as a gift2 and of course we cannot get it by working for it4 ,it is our appreciation of this gift that makes us work4 ,many people are working and working1 as ,rowland ,hill says1 like children on a rocking horse--it is a beautiful motion1 but there is no progress4 ,those who are working for salvation are like men on a treadmill1 going round1 and round1 and round2 toiling1 and toiling1 and toiling2 but nothing comes of it all4 ,there is no progress1 and there cannot be until you have the motive power within1 till the breath of life comes from ,god1 which can alone give you power to work for others4 ,suppose ,i say to my son3 ,you are going away from home2 and ,i want you to be very careful how you spend that #ejj4 ,well1 he says1 if you will give me #ejj1 ,i will be careful about it2 but how can ,i be careful in spending what ,i have not got8 ,and so1 unless you have salvation1 you cannot work it out4 ,take another illustration4 ,one summer my boy asked me to give him a piece of ground that he might have a garden all to himself4 ,i said ,i would give it to him2 but that ,i expected he would keep it clear of weeds1 and use it in some way that would make it pleasant and profitable to him4 ,he was to work out the piece of land2 but he could not do that until ,i had given it to him4 ,neither was it his working it out that secured him the garden4 ,i gave it to him freely1 apart from any merit of his own2 but ,i did so on the understanding that he should employ it to the best advantage4 ,i think that is a fair illustration of our working out the salvation that ,god has given us4 ,of course these illustrations fail in some points4 ,i could not impart to my son the willingness to work out the piece of land1 though ,i could provide him with all the necessary implements4 ,god not only gives us salvation freely1 but he gives us the power to work it out4 ,a writer says on this point3 ,paul does not command the ,philippians to save themselves4 ,there was no thought in his mind of any meritorious self-righteousness4 ,man can by no work of his own either procure salvation or merit salvation4 ,god worketh the salvation within the soul--man only worketh that salvation out in the ,christian life4 ,to break off from known sin2 to renounce all self-righteousness2 to cast ourselves in loving faith on the merits of ,christ crucified2 to commence at once a life of self-denial1 of prayer1 of obedience2 to turn from all that ,god forbids1 resolutely and earnestly1 unto all that ,god requires--this is what the text implies4 ,but then this is not salvation4 ,salvation is of ,god--of grace--of free grace4 ,from the germ to the fruit1 from foundation to top-stone--it is of grace1 free grace1 altogether and only4 ,but the 'working out of salvation'--is man's part in the work of salvation4 ,god will not repent for the man2 nor believe for the man2 nor lead a holy life for the man4 ,god worketh inwardly--man worketh outwardly4 ,and this outward human work is as necessary as the inward ,divine work4 ,god works in us2 and then we work for ,him4 ,if ,he has done a work in us1 we certainly ought to go and work for others4 ,a man must have this salvation1 and must know it1 before he can work for the salvation of others4 ,many of you have tried hard to save yourselves2 but what has been the end of it all8 ,i remember a lady in the ,north of ,england who became quite angry when ,i made this remark publicly3 ,no one in this congregation will be saved till they stop trying to save themselves4 ,down she came from the gallery1 and said to me3 ,you have made me perfectly miserable4 ,indeed1 ,i said1 how is that8 ,why1 ,i always thought that if ,i kept on trying1 ,god would save me at some time2 and now you tell me to stop trying3 what1 then1 am ,i to do8 ,why1 let the ,lord save you4 ,she went off in something like a rage4 ,it is not always a bad sign when you see a man or a woman wake up cross1 if it is the ,word of ,god that wakes them up4 ,a day or two afterwards she came and thanked me4 ,she said she had been turning over in her mind what ,i had said2 and at last the truth dawned upon her1 that though she had worked long1 though she had formed a good many resolutions1 she had made no progress4 ,so she gave up the struggle2 and then it was that the ,lord ,jesus saved her4 ,i want to ask you this question3 ,if sin needs forgiveness--and all sin is against ,god--how can you work out your own forgiveness8 ,if ,i stole #ajj from a friend1 ,i could not forgive myself1 could ,i8 ,no act of mine would bring about forgiveness1 unless my friend forgave me4 ,and so1 if ,i want forgiveness of sin1 it must be the work of ,god4 ,if we look at salvation as a new life1 it must be the work of ,god4 ,god is the author of life3 you cannot give yourself life4 ,if we consider it as a gift1 it must come from some one outside of ourselves4 ,that is what ,i read in the ,bible--,salvation as a gift4 ,while ,i am speaking1 you can make up your mind that you will stop trying1 and take this gift4 ,i wish ,i could get this whole audience to drop the word try1 and put the word trust in its place4 ,the forgiving grace of ,god is wonderful4 ,he will save you this very minute1 if you are willing to be saved4 ,he delights in mercy4 ,he wants to show that mercy to every soul4 ,the religion of ,christ is not man working his way up to ,god2 it is ,god coming down to man4 ,it is ,christ coming down to the pit of sin and woe where we are1 bringing us out of the pit1 putting our feet upon a rock1 and a new song in our mouth4 ,he will do it this minute1 while ,i am speaking1 if you will let ,him4 ,will you let ,him8 ,that is the question4 ,i do not believe much in dreams2 but they sometimes illustrate a point4 ,i heard about a woman who had been trying for a long time1 just like many of you1 to be better and better4 ,she tried to save herself1 but made no progress4 ,one night she fell asleep in a very troubled state of mind1 and she had a dream4 ,she thought that she was in a pit striving to get out--climbing and slipping1 climbing and slipping1 climbing and slipping2 at last she gave up the struggle1 and laid herself down at the bottom of the pit to die4 ,she happened to look up1 and she saw through the mouth of the pit a beautiful star4 ,she fixed her eye on it2 and it seemed as if the star lifted her up till she was almost out4 ,but the thought of herself came to her mind2 she looked off at the sides of the pit3 immediately she lost sight of the star1 and down to the bottom of the pit she went4 ,again she fixed her eye on the star2 and again it seemed to lift her almost out4 ,but once again she took her eye off the star1 and looked at herself2 down into the pit she fell again6 ,the third time she fixed her eye on the star and was lifted higher and higher1 until all at once her feet struck the ground above1 and she awoke from her sleep4 ,god taught her a lesson by the dream4 ,she learned that if ever she was to be saved1 she must give up the struggle1 and let ,jesus ,christ save her4 ,my friends1 give up the struggle today6 ,you have tried long and hard4 ,it has been a hard battle1 has it not8 ,give it up2 and repose in the arms of ,jesus ,christ4 ,say ,lord1 ,i come to thee as a poor sinner2 wilt ,thou not save me and help me8 ,the gift of ,god is eternal life4 ,it is offered to all3 who will have it8 ,i see some children here3 let me tell you a story4 ,if you have not heard it before1 please do not forget it4 ,a ,sunday school teacher wished to show his class how free the gift of ,god is4 ,he took a silver watch from his pocket one day1 and offered it to the eldest boy in the class4 ,it is yours1 if you will take it4 ,the little fellow sat and grinned at the teacher4 ,he thought he was joking4 ,the teacher offered it to the next boy1 and said3 ,take that watch3 it is yours4 ,the little fellow thought he would be laughed at if he held out his hand1 and therefore he sat still4 ,in the same way the teacher went nearly round the class3 but not one of them would accept the proffered gift4 ,at length he came to the smallest boy4 ,when the watch was offered to the little fellow1 he took it and put it into his pocket4 ,all the class laughed at him4 ,i am thankful1 my boy1 said the teacher1 that you believe my word4 ,the watch is yours4 ,take good care of it4 ,wind it up every night4 ,the rest of the class looked on in amazement2 and one of them said3 ,teacher1 you don't mean that the watch is his8 ,you don't mean that he hasn't to give it back to you8 ,no1 said the teacher1 he hasn't to give it back to me4 ,it is his own now4 ,oh--h--h6 if ,i had only known that1 wouldn't ,i have taken it6 ,i see you laugh2 but my friends you are laughing at yourselves4 ,you need not go far away to find these boys4 ,salvation is freely offered to all1 but the trouble is that men do not believe ,god's ,word1 and do not accept the gift4 ,who will accept it now8 ,i found a few lines the other day on this point that ,i thought very good4 ,i will close with them3 ,i would not work my soul to save1 ,for that my ,lord hath done2 ,but ,i would work like any slave1 ,for love of ,god's dear ,son4 ,,chapter ,,iv4 ,,grace ,,abounding ,,to ,,the ,,chief ,,of ,,sinners4 ,i ,,want to lay emphasis on the fact that ,god desires to show mercy to all4 ,christ's last command to ,his disciples was1 ,go ye into all the world and preach the ,gospel to every creature4 ,there may be some hearing me who have not received this grace1 though it has often been pressed on their acceptance4 ,one reason why many do not become partakers of this grace is that they think they can do better without it4 ,the ,jews said they were the seed of ,abraham4 ,they had ,moses and the ,law3 therefore they had no need of the pardoning grace of ,god that ,christ had come to bring4 ,we read in the book of ,revelation of a church that said it was rich1 and increased in goods1 and had need of nothing4 ,that was the trouble when ,christ was down here4 ,instead of coming to ,him to be blessed1 the people too often went away thinking and saying they had no need of ,his favor and blessing4 ,,the ,,two ,,prayers4 ,in the ,gospel by ,luke ,christ brings two men before us4 ,i do not know that we can get any two cases in ,scripture that will give us more light on this subject than those of the ,pharisee and the ,publican1 who went into the temple to pray4 ,one went away as empty as he came4 ,he was like the church described in ,revelation1 to which ,i have referred4 ,he went into the temple desiring nothing2 and he got nothing4 ,the other man asked for something2 he asked for pardon and mercy4 ,and he went down to his house justified4 ,take the prayer of the ,pharisee4 ,there is no confession in it1 no adoration1 no contrition1 no petition4 ,as ,i have said1 he asked for nothing and he got nothing4 ,some one has said that he went into the temple not to pray but to boast4 ,the sun and the moon were as far apart as these two men4 ,one was altogether of a different spirit to the other4 ,the one prayed with his head1 and the other with his heart4 ,the one told ,god what a wonderfully great and good man he was3 ,i am not as other men or even as this publican4 ,his prayer was not a long one2 it consisted of thirty-four words2 yet there were five capital ,i's in it4 ,it was self in the beginning1 self in the middle1 self in the end--self all through4 ',i fast twice a week2' ',i give tithes of all ,i possess2' ,i am a wonderfully good man1 am ,i not1 ,lord8 ,he struck a balance twice a week1 and ,god was his debtor every time4 ,he paraded his good deeds before ,god and man4 ,such a one was not in a condition to receive the favor of ,god4 ,you can divide the human family to-day into two classes--pharisees and publicans4 ,there are those who are poor in spirit3 the dew of ,god's grace will fall upon them4 ,there are others who are drawing around them the rags of their self-righteousness3 they will always go away without the blessing of ,god4 ,there were but seven words in the prayer of the ,publican3 ,god be merciful to me a sinner6 ,he came to ,god confessing his sins1 and asking for mercy2 and he received it4 ,if you were to run through ,scripture1 you would find that where men have gone to ,god in the spirit of the ,publican1 ,he has dealt with them in mercy and grace4 ,a young man came to one of our meetings in ,new ,york a few years ago4 ,he was convicted of sin2 and he made up his mind he would go home and pray4 ,he lived a number of miles away1 and he started for home4 ,on the way1 as he was meditating about his sins and wondering what he was going to do when he got home1 the thought occurred to him3 ,why should ,i not pray right here in the street8 ,but he found he did not know just how to begin4 ,then he remembered that when he was a child1 his mother had taught him this prayer of the ,publican3 ,god be merciful to me a sinner6 ,so he began just where he stood4 ,he said afterwards1 that before he got to the little word me1 ,god met him in grace1 and blessed him4 ,and so the moment we open our lips to ask ,god for pardon1 if the request comes from the heart1 ,god will meet us in mercy4 ,let our cry be that of the ,publican3 ,be merciful to me6--not to some one else4 ,a mother was telling me some time ago that she had trouble with one of her sons1 because he had not treated his brother rightly4 ,she sent him upstairs2 and after awhile she asked him what he had been doing4 ,he replied that he had been praying for his brother6 ,although he had been the naughty one1 he was acting as if the fault lay with his brother instead of himself4 ,so many of us can see the failings of others readily enough but when we get a good look at ourselves1 we will get down before ,god as the ,publican did and cry for mercy3 and that cry will bring an immediate answer4 ,god delights to deal in grace with the poor in spirit4 ,he wants to see in us a broken and contrite heart4 ,if we take the place of a sinner1 confessing our sins and asking for mercy1 the grace of ,god will meet us right then and there2 and we shall have the assurance of ,his forgiveness4 ,in ,matthew we see how ,god deals in grace with those who come in the right spirit4 ,then came she and worshipped ,him1 saying1 ,lord1 help me6 ,but he answered and said1 ,it is not meet to take the children's bread1 and to cast it to dogs4 ,and she said1 ,truth1 ,lord3 yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their master's table4 ,then ,jesus answered and said unto her1 ,o woman1 great is thy faith3 be it unto thee even as thou wilt4 ,and her daughter was made whole from that very hour4 ,the disciples did not understand how full of grace was the heart of ,christ4 ,this poor woman belonged to the far-off coasts of ,tyre and ,sidon4 ,she was a poor ,gentile1 and they wanted to send her away4 ,they thought she was not one of the elect2 she did not belong to the house of ,israel4 ,so they said to the ,master1 ,send her away1 for she crieth after us4 ,can you conceive of the loving ,saviour sending away a poor troubled one who comes to ,him8 ,i challenge you to find a single instance of ,his doing such a thing1 from the beginning to the end of ,his ministry4 ,send her away6 ,i believe ,he would rather send an angel away than a poor suppliant for ,his mercy2 ,he delighted to have such as she come to ,him4 ,but ,he was going to test her1 as well as to give an object-lesson to those who should come after4 ,it is not meet1 ,he said1 to take the children's bread1 and to cast it to dogs4 ,a ,,humble ,,spirit4 ,i am afraid if some of us had been in her place we would have answered somewhat in this fashion3 ,you call me a ,gentile dog1 do you8 ,i would not take anything from you now if you were to give it to me4 ,why1 ,i know a ,jewish woman who lives in my town4 ,though she is a daughter of ,abraham she is the meanest woman in the whole street4 ,i would not let my dogs associate with her4 ,if this poor woman had replied to the ,master in such a fashion1 she would not have got anything4 ,yet you will find a good many men who respond to the ,saviour in that way when ,he wants to deal in grace with them4 ,what does this ,gentile woman say8 ,truth ,lord2 yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table4 ,she took her right place down at the feet of the blessed ,master4 ,there was humility for you6 ,she was willing to take any place if the ,lord would but meet her need2 the ,lord blessed her4 ,see asked for a crumb1 and ,he gave her a whole loaf6 ,i once heard ,rev4 ,william ,arnot say that he was the guest of a friend who had a favorite dog4 ,the animal would come into the room where the family were sitting at the dinner table and would stand looking at his master4 ,if the master threw him a crumb1 the dog would seize it before it got to the floor4 ,but if he put the joint of meat down on the floor the dog would look at it and leave it alone1 as if it were too good for him4 ,so1 said ,mr4 ,arnot1 there are many ,christians who are satisfied to live on crumbs1 when ,god wants to give them the whole joint4 ,a ,,full ,,blessing4 ,this poor woman got all she wanted2 and if we will come in the right spirit--if we are humble and poor in spirit--and call upon ,god for what we want1 ,he will not disappoint us4 ,she went right to the ,son of ,god1 and appealed to ,his great loving heart with the cry1 ,lord help me6 and he helped her4 ,let that cry go up to him today1 and see how quickly the answer will come4 ,i never knew a case where ,god did not answer right on the spot1 where there was the spirit of meekness4 ,if on the other hand we are conceited1 and think we have a right to come1 putting ourselves on an equality with ,god1 we shall get nothing4 ,,worthiness4 ,in the ,gospel by ,luke we read of the centurion who had a sick servant4 ,he felt as though he were not worthy to go himself and ask ,christ to come to his house2 so he asked some of his friends to beseech the ,master to come and heal his servant4 ,they went and delivered the centurion's message1 saying1 ,he is worthy for whom ,thou shouldst do this3 for he loveth our nation1 and he hath built us a synagogue4 ,the ,jews could not understand grace2 so they thought ,christ would grant the request of this man1 because he was worthy4 ,why1 they said1 he hath built us a synagogue6 ,it is the same old story that we hear to-day4 ,let a man give a few thousand dollars to build a church and he must have the best pew2 he is worthy4 ,perhaps he made his money by selling or making strong drink2 but he has put the ,church under an obligation by this gift of money1 and he is considered worthy4 ,the same spirit was at work in the days of ,christ4 ,the ,master immediately started for the centurion's house2 and it looked as though ,he were going because of his personal worthiness4 ,but if ,he had done so1 it would have upset the whole story as an illustration of grace4 ,as the ,saviour was on the way1 out came the ,roman officer himself and told ,jesus that he was not worthy to receive ,him under his roof4 ,he had a very different opinion of himself to that of his ,jewish friends4 ,suppose he had said1 ,lord1 you will be my guest2 come and heal my servant because ,i am worthy3 ,i have built a synagogue4 ,do you think ,christ would have gone8 ,i do not think he would4 ,but he said1 ,i am not worthy that ,thou shouldst enter under my roof4 ,neither thought ,i myself worthy to come unto ,thee2 but say in a word1 and my servant shall be healed4 ,jesus marveled at the man's faith4 ,it pleased ,him wonderfully to find such faith and humility4 ,like the ,syro-,phenician woman1 he had low thoughts of himself1 and high thoughts of ,god3 therefore he was in a condition to receive the grace of ,god4 ,his servant1 we are told1 was healed that very hour4 ,his petition was granted at once4 ,let us learn a lesson from this man1 and take a humble position before ,god1 crying to him for mercy2 then help will come4 ,,great ,,forgiveness4 ,i never noticed till lately an interesting fact about the story of the poor sinful woman mentioned in ,luke's ,gospel1 who went into ,simon's house4 ,if you have not observed it before1 it will be quite interesting for you to know it4 ,the incident occurred immediately after ,christ had uttered those memorable words we read in ,matthew3 ,come unto ,me1 all ye that labor and are heavy-laden1 and ,i will give you rest4 ,matthew closes the narrative there2 but in the seventh chapter of ,luke you will find what the result of that invitation was4 ,a poor fallen woman came into the house where ,he was1 and obtained the blessing of rest to her soul4 ,i think that many ministers will bear me out in this statement1 that when one has preached to a large congregation1 and has given an invitation to those who would like to remain and talk about salvation1 probably the only one to do so is a poor fallen one1 who will thus become a partaker of the grace of ,god4 ,we find that the ,saviour was invited to the house of ,simon1 a ,pharisee4 ,while he was there1 this poor sinful woman crept into the house4 ,perhaps she watched for a chance when the servants were away from the door1 and then slipped into the room where the ,master was4 ,she got down on her knees1 and began to wash his feet with her tears1 wiping them with the hairs of her head4 ,while the feast was going on the ,pharisee saw this2 and he said to himself3 ,jesus must be a bad man1 if ,he knows who this poor woman is4 ,even if ,he did not know1 ,he would be unclean according to the ,mosaic law--because he had allowed the woman to touch ,him4 ,but the ,master knew what ,simon was thinking about4 ,he put some questions to him3 ,and ,jesus answering said unto him1 ,simon1 ,i have somewhat to say unto thee4 ,and he saith1 ,master1 say on4 ,there was a certain creditor which had two debtors3 the one owed five hundred pence1 and the other fifty4 ,and when they had nothing to pay1 he frankly forgave them both4 ,tell me therefore1 which of them will love him most8 ,simon answered and said1 ,i suppose that he to whom he forgave most4 ,and ,he said unto him1 ,thou hast rightly judged4 ,then ,he makes the application1 ,i came to your house1 ,he says1 and you gave me no water for my feet2 you gave me no kiss2 and no oil for my head4 ,you refused me the common hospitalities of life4 ,in those days when one went into a gentleman's house1 a servant would be at the door with a basin of water2 the guest would slip off his sandals1 and the servant would wash his feet4 ,then the master of the house would salute him with a kiss instead of shaking hands as we do4 ,there would also be oil for his head4 ,christ had been invited to ,simon's house2 but the ,pharisee had got ,him there in a patronizing spirit4 ,you gave me no water1 no kiss1 no oil2 but this woman hath washed my feet with her tears1 and wiped them with the hairs of her head3 she hath not ceased to kiss my feet1 and she hath anointed them with ointment4 ,she was forgiven much3 and so she loves much4 ,to the poor woman herself ,jesus said1 ,thy sins are forgiven4 ,they may have risen up like a dark mountain before her2 but one word from the ,saviour and they were all gone6 ,the spirit shown by ,simon was altogether different from that of the poor woman4 ,christ said that the publicans and harlots would go into the kingdom of ,god before the self-righteous ,pharisees6 ,simon1 the ,pharisee1 got nothing2 and so there are many who go away from religious meetings without one drop of heaven's dew1 because they do not seek for it4 ,from the morning of the creation down to the present time no man or woman ever went to ,god with a broken heart without experiencing the forgiving love and grace of ,god1 if they believed ,his ,word4 ,it was so with this poor woman4 ,notice1 the ,master did not extract any pledge or promise from her4 ,he did not ask her to join some synagogue2 all ,he said was1 ,thy sins are forgiven thee4 ,she found grace4 ,so it was with the ,syro-,phenician woman4 ,christ did not ask any pledge from her2 ,he met her in grace1 and blessed her according to her soul's desire4 ,you know what touched the heart of the father of the prodigal2 it was the broken and contrite spirit of his returning son4 ,would not the same thing move the heart of any parent here8 ,suppose you had a son who had gone astray3 the boy comes home2 and when you meet him he begins to confess his sin4 ,would you not take him to your bosom and forgive him8 ,nothing in the wide world would you more readily do than forgive him4 ,so if we come to ,god with this contrite spirit1 ,he will deal in grace with us and receive us freely1 ,when ,saul left ,jerusalem1 there was nothing he wished for less than to receive the grace of ,god4 ,yet the moment he said1 ,lord1 what wilt ,thou have me to do8 the forgiving grace of the ,master flowed out towards him4 ,we are told by ,matthew and ,mark that the thief on the cross1 who was converted1 railed on the ,saviour at first like the other3 but the moment his heart was broken down and he said1 ,lord1 remember me6 that very moment ,christ heard and answered his prayer4 ,god is waiting to cover all your sins today2 ,he has a long and a strong arm that can reach down to the darkest1 vilest1 deepest depths of sin4 ,he will lift you up on a rock1 and put a new song into your mouth4 ,will you let him do it8 ,a man was telling me some time ago that he had prayed for over ten years that ,god would have mercy upon him4 ,has not ,god answered your prayer8 ,no4 ,indeed6 ,let me ask you one question3 suppose ,i offered you that ,bible as a gift1 and you were afterwards to come and ask me for it2 what would ,i think of you8 ,i do not know what you would think4 ,well1 but what do you suppose ,i would think8 ,you would perhaps think ,i had gone a little wrong in my head4 ,what is the use of your asking that ,god would deal in grace with you1 if you are not willing to receive it2 or if you do not believe that ,he gives it to you8 ,when ,i was on the ,pacific coast some years ago1 ,i stayed with a friend who had a large garden1 with a great many orange trees4 ,he said to me3 ,make yourself perfectly at home2 if you see anything you want just help yourself4 ,when ,i wanted some oranges1 ,i did not go into the garden and pray to the oranges to tumble into my mouth2 ,i just put out my hand and took all ,i required4 ,so it is with us4 ,why should we go on asking and beseeching ,god to have mercy upon us1 when ,he has already given ,his ,son1 and given ,his ,holy ,spirit8 ,what we need is to have a broken and a contrite heart1 and to be willing to receive ,him4 ,the trouble with us is that we have locked the doors of our hearts against ,him4 ,there is a story that ,dr4 ,arnot was accustomed to tell of a poor woman who was in great distress because she could not pay her landlord his rent4 ,the ,doctor put some money in his pocket and went round to her house intending to help her4 ,when he got there he knocked at the door4 ,he thought he heard some movement inside2 but no one came to open the door4 ,he knocked louder and louder still2 but yet no one came4 ,finally he kicked at the door1 causing some of neighbors to look out and see what was going on4 ,but he could get no entrance2 and at last he went away thinking his ears must have deceived him1 and that there was really no one there4 ,a day or two afterwards he met the woman in the street1 and told her what had happened4 ,she held up her hands and exclaimed1 ,was that you8 ,i was in the house all the while2 but ,i thought it was the landlord1 and ,i had the door locked6 ,many people are keeping the door of their heart locked against the ,saviour in just the same way4 ,they say ,i am afraid ,i shall have to give up so much4 ,that is something like a ragged beggar being unwilling to give up his rags1 in order to get a new suit of good clothes4 ,i pity those people who are all the time looking to see what they will have to give up4 ,god wants to bestow ,his marvelous grace on ,his people2 and there is not a soul who has believed on ,jesus1 for whom ,god has not abundance of grace in store4 ,what would you say of a man dying of thirst on the banks of a beautiful river1 with the stream flowing past his feet8 ,you would think he was mad6 ,the river of ,god's grace flows on without ceasing2 why should we not partake of it1 and go on our way rejoicing8 ,do you say you are sinners8 ,it is just to such as you that ,god's grace is given4 ,there was a sailor whose mother had long been praying for him4 ,i do think mothers' prayers are sure to be answered some day4 ,one night the memory of his mother came home to this man2 he thought of the days of his childhood1 and made up his mind he would try and lead a different life4 ,when he got to ,new ,york he thought he would join the ,odd-fellows2 he imagined that would be a good way to begin4 ,what miserable mistakes men make when they get trying to save themselves6 ,this man applied to a lodge of ,odd-fellows for admission2 but the committee found that he was a drinking man1 and so they black-balled him4 ,then he thought he would try the ,freemasons2 they discovered what sort of a man he was1 and they black-balled him too4 ,one day he was walking along ,fulton ,street1 when he received an invitation to come to the daily prayer-meeting held there4 ,he went in1 and heard about the ,saviour2 he received ,christ into his heart1 and found the peace and power he wanted4 ,some days after he stood up in the meeting and told the story how the ,odd-fellows had black-balled him2 how the ,freemasons had black-balled him2 and how he came to the ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 who had not black-balled him1 but took him right in4 ,that is what ,christ will do to every poor penitent sinner4 ,this ,man receiveth sinners4 ,come to ,him to-day1 and ,he will receive you3 ,his marvelous1 sovereign grace will cover and put away all your sins4 ,i am so glad that we have a ,saviour who can save unto the very uttermost4 ,he can save the drunkard1 the man who for years has been the slave of his passions4 ,i was talking to a friend not long ago1 who said that if a man had a father and a mother who were drunkards1 he would inherit the taste for drink1 and that there was not much chance of saving him4 ,i want to say that there is a grand chance for such men1 if they will call upon ,jesus ,christ to save them4 ,he is able to destroy the very appetite for drink4 ,he came to destroy the works of the devil2 and if this appetite for gin and whiskey is not the work of the devil1 ,i want to know what is4 ,i do not know any more terrible agency that the devil has got than this intoxicating liquor4 ,an ,englishman went out from ,england to ,chicago1 and became one of the greatest drunkards in that city4 ,his father and his mother were drunkards before him4 ,he said that when he was four years old1 his father took him into a public-house1 and put the liquor to his lips4 ,by and by he got a taste for it2 and for several years he was a confirmed drunkard4 ,he became what in ,america we call a tramp4 ,he slept out of doors4 ,one night1 on the shore of a lake1 he awoke from his slumber1 and began to call upon ,god to save him4 ,there1 at the midnight hour1 this poor1 wretched1 forlorn object got victory over his sin4 ,the last time ,i met him he had been nine-and-a-half years a sober man4 ,from that memorable midnight hour1 he said1 he had never had any desire to touch or taste strong drink4 ,god had kept him all those years4 ,i am so thankful we have a ,gospel that we can carry into the home of the drunkard1 and tell him that ,christ will save him4 ,that is the very thing ,he came to do4 ,bunyan represents the power of grace1 as shown by its first offer to the ,jerusalem sinners1 the murderers of ,christ1 thus3 ,repent1 every one of you3 be baptized1 every one of you1 in ,his name1 for the remission of sins2 and you shall1 every one of you1 receive the ,holy ,ghost4 ,but ,i was one of those who plotted to take away ,his life4 ,may ,i be saved by ,him8 ,every one of you4 ,but ,i was one of those who bore false witness against ,him4 ,is there grace for me8 ,for every one of you4 ,but ,i was one of those who cried out1 ,crucify ,him6 crucify ,him6 and who desired that ,barrabas1 the murderer1 might live1 rather than ,he4 ,what will become of me1 think you8 ,i am to preach repentance and remission of sins to every one of you4 ,but ,i was one of those who did spit in ,his face when ,he stood before ,his accusers2 ,i also was one that mocked ,him when1 in anguish1 ,he hung bleeding on the tree4 ,is there room for me8 ,for every one of you4 ,but ,i was one of those who1 in ,his extremity1 said1 ,give ,him gall and vinegar to drink6 ,why may ,i not expect the same when pain and anguish are upon me8 ,repent of these thy wickednesses2 and here is remission of sins for every one of you4 ,but ,i railed on ,him2 ,i reviled ,him2 ,i hated ,him2 ,i rejoiced to see ,him mocked at by others4 ,can there be hope for me8 ,there is2 for every one of you4 ,oh1 what a blessed ,every-one-of-you is here6 ,how willing was ,peter and the ,lord ,jesus by the ministry of ,peter--to catch these murderers with the word of the ,gospel1 that they might be monuments of the grace of ,god6 ,now it is a solemn fact that every one who receives the offer of the ,gospel can lock and bolt the door of his heart1 and say to the ,lord ,jesus ,christ he refuses to let ,him in4 ,but it is also a blessed truth that you can unlock that door and say to ,him1 ,welcome6 thrice welcome1 ,son of ,god1 into this heart of mine6 ,the question is3 ,will you let ,christ come in and save you8 ,it is not a question of whether ,he is able4 ,who will open their hearts1 and let the ,saviour come in8 ,there's a stranger at the door3 ,let ,him in6 ,he has been there oft before3 ,let ,him in6 ,let ,him in1 ere ,he is gone2 ,let ,him in1 the ,holy ,one1 ,jesus ,christ1 the ,father's ,son3 ,let ,him in6 ,open now to ,him your heart3 ,let ,him in6 ,if you wait ,he will depart3 ,let ,him in6 ,let ,him in1 ,he is your ,friend2 ,he your soul will sure defend2 ,he will keep you to the end3 ,let ,him in6 ,hear you now ,his loving voice8 ,let ,him in6 ,now1 oh now1 make ,him your choice3 ,let ,him in6 ,he is standing at the door2 ,joy to you ,he will restore1 ,and ,his name you will adore3 ,let ,him in6 ,now admit the heavenly ,guest4 ,let ,him in6 ,he will make for you a feast3 ,let ,him in6 ,he will speak your sins forgiven1 ,and when earth-ties all are riven1 ,he will take you home to heaven1 ,let ,him in6 ,rev4 ,j4 ,b ,atchinson ,,chapter ,v4 ,,law ,,and ,,grace4 ,,in his ,epistle to the ,romans1 ,paul writes ,for as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners1 so by the obedience of ,one shall many be made righteous4 ,moreover1 the law entered that the offense might abound4 ,but where sin abounded1 grace did much more abound3 that as sin hath reigned unto death1 even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by ,jesus ,christ our ,lord4 ,moses was the representative of the law4 ,you remember that he led the children of ,israel through the wilderness1 and brought them to ,jordan2 but there he left them4 ,he could take them up to the river1 which is a type of death and judgment2 but ,joshua 7which means ,jesus--,saviour7 led them right through death and judgment--through the ,jordan into the ,promised ,land4 ,here we have the difference between ,law and ,grace2 between the ,law and the ,gospel4 ,take another illustration4 ,john the ,baptist was the last prophet of the old dispensation--the last prophet under the law4 ,you remember that before ,christ made ,his appearance at the ,jordan1 the cry of ,john1 day by day was1 ,repent3 for the kingdom of ,god is at hand6 ,he thundered out the law4 ,he took his hearers down to the ,jordan and baptized them4 ,he put them in the place of death2 and that was as far as he could take them4 ,but there was ,one coming after him who could take them into the ,promised ,land4 ,as ,joshua led the people through the ,jordan into ,canaan1--so ,christ went down into the ,jordan of death1 through death and judgment1 on to resurrection ground4 ,if you run all through ,scripture you will find that the law brings to death4 ,sin reigned unto death4 ,a friend was telling me lately that an acquaintance of his1 a minister1 was once called upon to officiate at a funeral1 in the place of a chaplain of one of ,her ,majesty's prisons1 who was absent4 ,he noticed that only one solitary man followed the body of the criminal to the grave4 ,when the grave had been covered1 this man told the minister that he was an officer of the law whose duty it was to watch the body of the culprit until it was buried out of sight2 that was the end of the ,british law4 ,and that is what the law of ,god does to the sinner2 it brings him right to death1 and leaves him there4 ,i pity deep down in my heart those who are trying to save themselves by the law4 ,it never has2 it never will2 and it never can--save the soul4 ,when people say they are going to try and do their best1 and so save themselves by the law1 ,i like to take them on their own ground4 ,have they1 ever done their very best8 granting that there might be a chance for them if they had1 was there ever a time when they could not have done a little better8 ,if a man wants to do his best1 let him accept the grace of ,god2 that is the best thing that any man or woman can possibly do4 ,but you will ask1 ,what is the law given for8 ,it may sound rather strange1 but it is given that it may stop every man's mouth4 ,we know that what things soever the law saith1 it saith to them who are under the law3 that every mouth may be stopped1 and all the world may become guilty before ,god4 ,therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in ,his sight2 for by the law is the knowledge of sin4 ,the law shuts my mouth2 grace opens it4 ,the law locks up my heart2 grace opens it--and then the fountain of love begins to flow out4 ,when men get their eyes opened to see this glorious truth1 they will cease their constant struggle4 ,they will give up trying to work their way into the kingdom of ,god by the deeds of the law4 ,they will give themselves up for lost1 and take salvation as a free gift4 ,life never came through the law4 ,as some one has observed3 ,when the law was given1 three thousand men lost life2 but when grace and truth came at ,pentecost1 three thousand obtained life4 ,under the law1 if a man became a drunkard the magistrates would take him out and stone him to death4 ,when the prodigal came home1 grace met him and embraced him4 ,law says1 ,stone him6--grace says1 ,embrace him6 ,law says1 ,smite him6--grace says1 ,kiss him6 ,law went after him1 and bound him2 grace said1 loose him and let him go6 ,law tells me how crooked ,i am2 grace comes and makes me straight4 ,i pity those who are always hanging around ,sinai1 hoping to get life there4 ,i have an old friend in ,chicago who is always lingering at ,sinai4 ,he is a very good man2 but ,i think he will have a different story to tell when he gets home to heaven4 ,he thinks ,i preach free grace too much2 and ,i must confess ,i do like to speak of the free grace of ,god4 ,this friend of mine feels as though he has a kind of mission to follow me2 and whenever he gets a chance he comes in with the thunders of ,sinai4 ,i never yet met him but he was thundering away from ,horeb4 ,the last time ,i was in ,chicago1 ,i said to him1 ,are you still lingering around ,sinai8 ,yes1 said he1 ,i believe in the law4 ,i have made inquiries1 and ,i never heard of any one being converted under his preaching3 the effects have always dwindled and died out4 ,if the law is the door to heaven1 there is no hope for any of us4 ,a perfect ,god can only have a perfect standard4 ,he that offends in one point is guilty of all3 so all have sinned and come short of the glory of ,god4 ,paul says to the ,galatians3 ,is the law then against the promises of ,god8 ,god forbid3 for if there had been a law given which could have given life1 verily righteousness should have been by the law4 ,but the ,scripture hath concluded all under sin that the promise by faith of ,jesus ,christ might be given to them that believe4 ,but before faith came1 we were kept under the law1 shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed4 ,wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto ,christ1 that we might be justified by faith4 ,but after that faith is come1 we are no longer under a schoolmaster4 ,for ye are all the children of ,god by faith in ,jesus ,christ4 ,,the ,,softening ,,power ,,of ,,grace4 ,so we see that the law cannot give life2 all it can do is to bring us to ,him who is the life4 ,the law is said to be a schoolmaster4 ,perhaps some of you do not know what a schoolmaster is4 ,if you had been under the same schoolmaster as ,i was when a boy you would have known4 ,he had a good cane and it was frequently in use4 ,in the little country district where ,i went to school1 there were two parties3 for the sake of illustration we may call the one the law party and the other the grace party4 ,the law party said that boys could not possibly be controlled without the cane3 and they kept a schoolmaster there who acted on their plan4 ,the struggle went on1 and at last1 on one election day1 the law party was put out1 and the grace party ruled in their stead4 ,i happened to be at the school at that time2 and ,i remember we said to each other that we were going to have a grand time that winter4 ,there would be no more corporal punishment1 and we were going to be ruled by love4 ,i was one of the first to break the rules of the school4 ,we had a lady teacher1 and she asked me to stay behind4 ,i thought the cane was coming out again2 and ,i was going to protest against it4 ,i was quite in a fighting mood4 ,she took me alone4 ,she sat down and began to talk to me kindly4 ,i thought that was worse than the cane2 ,i did not like it4 ,i saw that she had not got any cane4 ,she said3 ,i have made up my mind that if ,i cannot control the school by love1 ,i will give it up4 ,i will have no punishment2 and if you love me1 try and keep the rules of the school4 ,i felt something right here in my throat4 ,i was not one to shed many tears2 but they would come--,i could not keep them back4 ,i said to her1 ,you will have no more trouble with me2 and she did not4 ,i learned more that winter than in the other three put together4 ,that was the difference between law and grace4 ,christ says1 ,if you love ,me1 keep ,my commandments4 ,he takes us out from under the law1 and puts us under grace4 ,grace will break the hardest heart4 ,it was the love of ,god that prompted ,him to send ,his only-begotten ,son into the world that ,he might save it4 ,i suppose the thief had gone through his trial unsoftened4 ,probably the law had hardened his heart4 ,but on the cross no doubt that touching prayer of the ,saviour1 ,father1 forgive them6 broke his heart1 so that he cried1 ,lord1 remember me6 ,he was brought to ask for mercy4 ,i believe there is no man so far gone but the grace of ,god will melt his heart4 ,it is told of ,isaac ,t4 ,hopper1 the ,quaker1 that he once encountered a profane colored man1 named ,cain1 in ,philadelphia1 and took him before a magistrate1 who fined him for blasphemy4 ,twenty years after1 ,hopper met ,cain1 whose appearance was much changed for the worse4 ,this touched the ,friend's heart4 ,he stepped up1 spoke kindly1 and shook hands with the forlorn being4 ,dost thou remember me1 said the ,quaker1 how ,i had thee fined for swearing8 ,yes1 indeed1 ,i do3 ,i remember what ,i paid as well as if it was yesterday4 ,well1 did it do thee any good8 ,no1 never a bit3 it made me mad to have my money taken from me4 ,hopper invited ,cain to reckon up the interest on the fine1 and paid him principal and interest too4 ,i meant it for thy good1 ,cain2 and ,i am sorry ,i did thee any harm4 ,cain's countenance changed2 the tears rolled down his cheeks4 ,he took the money with many thanks1 became a quiet man1 and was not heard to swear again4 ,,peace1 ,,grace ,,and ,,glory4 ,so there is a great deal of difference between law and grace4 ,being justified by faith we have peace with ,god through our ,lord ,jesus ,christ2 by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand1 and rejoice in hope of the glory of ,god4 ,there are three precious things here3 peace for the past2 grace for the present2 and glory for the future4 ,there is no peace until we see the finished work of ,jesus ,christ--until we can look back and see the ,cross of ,christ between us and our sins4 ,when we see that ,jesus was the end of the law for righteousness2 that ,he tasted death for every man2 that ,he suffered the ,just for the unjust--then comes peace4 ,then there is the grace wherein we now stand4 ,there is plenty of grace for us as we need it day by day1 and hour by hour4 ,then there is glory for the time to come4 ,a great many people seem to forget that the best is before us4 ,dr4 ,bonar says that everything before the true believer is glorious4 ,this thought took hold of my soul2 and ,i began to look the matter up1 and see what ,i could find in ,scripture that was glorious hereafter4 ,i found that the kingdom we are going to inherit is glorious3 our crown is to be a crown of glory2 the city we are going to inhabit is the city of the glorified2 the songs we are to sing are the songs of the glorified2 we are to wear garments of glory and beauty2 our society will be the society of the glorified2 our rest is to be glorious2 the country to which we are going is to be full of the glory of ,god and of the ,lamb4 ,there are many who are always looking on the backward path1 and mourning over the troubles through which they have passed2 they keep lugging up the cares and anxieties they have been called on to bear1 and are forever looking at them4 ,why should we go reeling and staggering under the burdens and cares of life when we have such prospects before us8 ,if there is nothing but glory beyond1 our faces ought to shine brightly all the time4 ,if a skeptic were to come up here and watch the countenances of the audience he would find many of you looking as though there was anything but glory before you4 ,many a time it seems to me as if ,i were at a funeral1 people look so sad and downcast4 ,they do not appear to know much of the joy of the ,lord4 ,surely if we were looking right on to the glory that awaits us1 our faces would be continually lit up with the light of the upper world4 ,we can preach by our countenances if we will4 ,the nearer we draw to that glory-land1 where we shall be with ,christ--the more peace1 and joy1 and rest we ought to have4 ,if we will but come to the throne of grace1 we shall have strength to bear all our troubles and trials4 ,if you were to take all the afflictions that flesh is heir to and put them right on any one of us1 ,god has grace enough to carry us right through without faltering4 ,some one has compiled the following1 which beautifully describes the contrast between law and grace3 ,the ,law was given by ,moses4 ,grace and truth came by ,jesus ,christ4 ,the ,law says--,this do1 and thou shalt live4 ,grace says--,live1 and then thou shalt do4 ,the ,law says--,pay me that thou owest4 ,grace says--,i frankly forgive thee all4 ,the ,law says--,the wages of sin is death4 ,,grace says--,the gift of ,god is eternal life4 ,the ,law says--,the soul that sinneth1 it shall die4 ,grace says--,whosoever believeth in ,jesus1 though he were dead1 yet shall he live2 and whosoever liveth and believeth in ,him shall never die4 ,the ,law pronounces--,condemnation and death4 ,grace proclaims--,justification and life4 ,the ,law says--,make you a new heart and a new spirit4 ,grace says--,a new heart will ,i give you1 and a new spirit will ,i put within you4 ,the ,law says--,cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them4 ,grace says--,blessed is the man whose iniquities are forgiven1 whose sin is covered2 blessed is the man to whom the ,lord will not impute iniquity4 ,the ,law says--,thou shalt love the ,lord thy ,god with all thy heart1 and with all thy mind1 and with all thy strength4 ,grace says--,herein is love3 not that we love ,god1 but that ,he loved us1 and sent ,his ,son to be the propitiation for our sins4 ,the ,law speaks of what man must do for ,god4 ,grace tells of what ,christ has done for man4 ,the ,law addresses man as part of the old creation4 ,grace makes a man a member of the new creation4 ,the ,law bears on a nature prone to disobedience4 ,grace creates a nature inclined to obedience4 ,the ,law demands obedience by the terror of the ,lord4 ,grace beseeches men by the mercies of ,god4 ,the ,law demands holiness4 ,grace gives holiness4 ,the ,law says--,condemn him4 ,grace says--,embrace him4 ,the ,law speaks of priestly sacrifices offered year by year continually1 which could never make the comers thereunto perfect4 ,grace says--,but this ,man1 after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever 4 4 4 by one offering hath perfected forever them that are sanctified4 ,the ,law declares--,that as many as have sinned in the ,law1 shall be judged by the ,law4 ,grace brings eternal peace to the troubled soul of every child of ,god1 and proclaims ,god's salvation in defiance of the accusations of the adversary4 ,he that heareth ,my word1 and believeth on ,him that sent me1 hath everlasting life1 and shall not come into judgment 7condemnation71 but is passed from death unto life4 ,whence to me this tranquil spirit-- ,me all sinful as ,i am8 ,is it thus descends the merit ,of the sin-atoning ,lamb8 ,grace1 all power to deliver1 ,gift of a ,creative ,giver1 ,like a full1 refreshing river1 ,ever flowing4 ,over all my course of sinning ,spread its waters without bound1 ,cleansing1 fertilizing1 winning ,for the ,lord the barren ground4 ,lavish from the heavenly treasure1 ,fountains of a ,father's pleasure1 ,all the marks of human measure ,overflowing4 ,not my virtue or repenting ,earned the precious boon for me4 ,thine1 my ,saviour1 the relenting1 ,thine the pangs which set me free-- ,gift of grace beyond all knowing1 ,from the heart of ,jesus flowing1 ,ever flowing1 overflowing1 ,flowing freely4 ,,chapter ,,vi4 ,,grace ,,for ,,living4 ,,now we come to a very important part of our subject--,grace for living4 ,one of the saddest things in the present day is the fact that so many professed ,christians have no spiritual power4 ,they bear no testimony for ,christ4 ,there are so few who can go to the homes of the sick and read the ,bible to them1 pray with them1 and minister comfort to their souls4 ,how few can go to the abode of the drunkard1 and tell him of ,christ's power to save6 ,how few there are who are wise in winning souls to ,christ6 ,it is the low spiritual state of so many in the ,church of ,christ that is the trouble4 ,we are not living up to our privileges4 ,as you go through the streets of ,london you will see here and there the words1 ,limited ,company4 ,there are many ,christians who practically limit the grace of ,god4 ,it is like a river flowing by2 and we can have all we need3 but if we do not come and get a continual supply1 we cannot give it out to others4 ,mother6 father6 are you not longing to see your children won to ,christ8 ,what is the trouble8 ,is it the fault of the minister8 ,i believe that though ministers were to preach like angels1 if there is a low standard of ,christian life in the home1 there will be little accomplished4 ,what we want1 more than anything else1 is more grace in our lives1 in our business affairs1 in our homes1 in our daily walk and conversation4 ,i cannot but believe that the reason of the standard of ,christian life being so low1 is that we are living on stale manna4 ,you know what ,i mean by that4 ,so many people are living on their past experience--thinking of the grand times they had twenty years ago1 perhaps when they were converted4 ,it is a sure sign that we are out of communion with ,god if we are talking more of the joy1 and peace1 and power1 we had in the past1 than of what we have to-day4 ,we are told to grow in grace2 but a great many are growing the wrong way4 ,you remember the ,israelites used to gather the manna fresh every day3 they were not allowed to store it up4 ,there is a lesson here for us ,christians4 ,if we would be strong and vigorous1 we must go to ,god daily and get grace4 ,a man can no more take in a supply of grace for the future than he can eat enough to-day to last him for the next six months2 or take sufficient air into his lungs at once to sustain life for a week to come4 ,we must draw upon ,god's boundless stores of grace from day to day1 as we need it4 ,i knew a man who lived on the banks of ,lake ,erie4 ,he had pipes laid to his house from the lake2 and when he wanted water1 all he had to do was to turn the tap and the water flowed in4 ,if the ,government had presented him with the lake1 he would not have known what to do with it4 ,so we may say that if ,god were to give us grace enough for a lifetime1 we should not know how to use it4 ,he has given us the privilege of drawing on ,him day by day--not forty days after sight4 ,there is plenty of grace in the bank of heaven2 we need not be afraid of its becoming exhausted4 ,we are asked to come boldly to the throne of grace--as sons to a father--that we may find grace4 ,you have noticed that a son is very much more bold in his father's house than if he were simply a servant4 ,a good many ,christians are like servants4 ,if you go into a house1 you can soon tell the difference between the family and the servants4 ,a son comes home in the evening2 he goes all over the house--perhaps talks about the letters that have come in1 and wants to know all that has been going on in the family during his absence4 ,it is very different with a servant1 who perhaps does not leave the kitchen or the servants' hall all day except when duty requires it4 ,suppose some one had paid a million dollars into the bank in your name1 and had given you a check-book so that you could draw out just as you wanted3 would you go to work and try to live on ten dollars a month8 ,yet that is exactly what many of us are doing as ,christians4 ,i believe this low standard of ,christian life in the ,church is doing more to manufacture infidels than all the skeptical books that were ever written4 ,hear what the ,apostle says3 ,my ,god shall supply all your need4 ,look at these words carefully4 ,it does not say ,he will supply all your wants4 ,there are many things we want that ,god has not promised to give4 ,it is your need and all your need4 ,my children often want many things they do not get2 but ,i supply all they need1 if it is in my power to give it to them4 ,i do not supply all their wants by any means4 ,my boy would probably want to have me give him a horse2 when ,i know that what he really needs1 perhaps1 is grace to control his temper4 ,our children might want many things that it would be injurious for them to have4 ,and so1 though ,god may withhold from us many things that we desire1 ,he will supply all our need4 ,there can come upon us no trouble or trial in this life1 but ,god has grace enough to carry us right through it1 if we will only go to ,him and get it4 ,but we must ask for it day by day4 ,as thy days1 so shall thy strength be4 ,i met a man once in ,scotland who taught me a lesson that ,i shall never forget4 ,a ,christian friend wanted me to go and have a talk with him4 ,he had been bedridden for many years4 ,this afflicted saint comforted me and told me some wonderful things4 ,he had fallen and broken his back when he was about fifteen years of age1 and had lain there on his bed for some forty years4 ,he could not be moved without a good deal of pain1 and probably not a day has passed all those years without suffering4 ,if any one had told him he was going to lie there and suffer for forty years1 probably he would have said he could not do it4 ,but day after day the grace of ,god has been granted to him2 and ,i declare to you it seemed to me as if ,i were in the presence of one of ,god's most highly-favored children4 ,it seemed that when ,i was in that man's chamber1 ,i was about as near heaven as ,i could get on this earth4 ,talk about a man's face shining with the glory of the upper world6 ,i very seldom see a face that shines as did his4 ,i can imagine that the very angels when they are passing over the city on some mission of mercy1 come down into that man's chamber to get refreshed4 ,there he has been lying all these years1 not only without a murmur1 but rejoicing all the while4 ,i said to him3 ,my friend1 does the devil never tempt you to doubt ,god1 and to think ,he is a hard master8 ,well now1 he said1 that is just what he tries to do4 ,sometimes1 as ,i look out of the window and see people walking along in health1 ,satan whispers3 ',if ,god is so good1 why does ,he keep you here all these weary years8 ,why1 if ,he loved you1 instead of lying here and being dependent on others1 you might now have been a rich man1 and riding in your own carriage4' ,what do you do when the devil tempts you8 ,oh1 ,i just take him up to the ,cross2 and he had such a fright there eighteen hundred years ago1 that he cannot stand it2 and he leaves me4 ,i do not think that bedridden saint has much trouble with doubts2 he is so full of grace4 ,and so if we will only come boldly to ,god1 we shall get all the help and strength we need4 ,there is not a man or woman alive but may be kept from falling1 if they will let ,god hold them up in ,his almighty arms4 ,there is a story in the history of ,elisha the prophet that ,i am very fond of2 most of you are familiar with it4 ,sometimes we meet with people who hesitate to accept ,christ1 because they are so afraid they will not hold out4 ,you remember there was a young prophet who died and left a widow with two little boys4 ,it has been said that misfortunes do not come singly1 but in battalions4 ,this woman had not only lost her husband1 but a creditor was going to take her boys and sell them into slavery4 ,that was a common thing in those days4 ,the widow went and told ,elisha all about it4 ,he asked her what she had in the house4 ,nothing1 she said1 but a pot of oil4 ,it was a very hard case4 ,elisha told her to go home and borrow all the vessels she could4 ,his command was3 ,borrow not a few4 ,i like that4 ,she took him at his word1 and borrowed all the vessels her neighbors would lend to her4 ,i can imagine ,i see the woman and her two sons going from house to house asking the loan of their vessels4 ,no doubt there were a good many of the neighbors who were stretching their necks1 and wondering what it all meant2 just as we sometimes find people coming into the inquiry-room to see what is going on4 ,if this woman had been like some modern skeptics1 she would have thought it very absurd for the prophet to bid her do such a thing2 she would have asked what good could come of it4 ,but faith asks no questions3 so she went and did what the man of ,god told her to do4 ,i can see her going up one side of the street knocking at every door and asking for empty vessels4 ,how many do you want8 ,all you can spare4 ,there are the two sons carrying the great vessels2 some of them perhaps nearly as large as the boys themselves4 ,it was hard work4 ,when they had finished one side of the street1 they went down the other4 ,borrow not a few1 she had been told2 so she went on asking for as many as she could get4 ,if there were as much gossip in those days as there is now1 all the people in the street would have been talking about her4 ,why1 this woman and her boys have been carrying vessels into the house all day2 what can be the matter8 ,but now they have all the vessels the neighbors would lend4 ,she locks the door2 and she says to one of the boys1 ,james1 you are the younger2 bring me the empty vessels4 ,john1 you are the stronger2 when1 ,i have filled them you take them away4 ,so she began to pour4 ,perhaps the first vessel was twice as big as the one she poured from2 but it was soon filled3 and she kept on pouring into vessel after vessel4 ,at last her son says1 ,mother1 this is the last one2 and we are told that the oil was not stayed till the last vessel was full4 ,dear friends1 bring your empty vessels2 and ,god will fill them4 ,i venture to say that the eyes of those boys sparkled as they saw this beautiful oil1 fresh from the hand of the ,creator4 ,the woman went and told the man of ,god what had happened2 he said to her1 ,go1 sell the oil1 and pay thy debt2 and live thou and thy children off the rest4 ,that is grace for the present1 and for the future4 ,as thy days so shall thy strength be4 ,you will have grace not only to cover all your sins1 but to carry you right into glory4 ,let the grace of ,god into your heart2 and ,he will bring you safely through4 ,let me close by quoting the words of an old prayer3 ,god give us grace to see our need of grace2 give us grace to ask for grace2 give us grace to receive grace2 give us grace to use the grace we have received4 ,grace taught my soul to pray1 ,and pardoning love to know2 ',twas grace that kept me to this day1 ,and will not let me go4 ,grace all the work shall crown1 ,through everlasting days2 ,it lays in heaven the topmost stone1 ,and well deserves the praise6 ,,chapter ,,vii4 ,,grace ,,for ,,service4 ,,for the grace of ,god that bringeth salvation to all men hath appeared2 teaching us that1 denying ungodliness and worldly lusts1 we should live soberly1 righteously1 and godly1 in this present world2 looking for that blessed hope1 and the glorious appearing of the great ,god and our ,saviour ,jesus ,christ1 who gave ,himself for us1 that ,he might redeem us from all iniquity1 and purify unto ,himself a peculiar people1 zealous of good works4 ,in this wonderful passage we see grace in a threefold aspect3 grace that bringeth salvation2 grace for holy living2 and grace for service4 ,i have had three red-letter days in my experience3 the first was1 when ,i was converted2 the next was when ,i got my lips opened1 and ,i began to confess ,christ2 the third was1 when ,i began to work for the salvation of others4 ,i think there are a great many who have got to the first stage2 some have got to the second2 very few have got to the third4 ,this is the reason1 ,i believe1 why the world is not reached4 ,many say they are anxious to grow in grace4 ,i do not think they ever will1 until they go out into the harvest field and begin to work for others4 ,we are not going to have the grace we need to qualify us for work until we launch out into the deep1 and begin to use the abilities and the opportunities we already possess4 ,many fold their arms1 and wait for the grace of ,god to come to them2 but we do not get it in that way4 ,when we go forward1 then it is that ,god meets us with ,his ,grace4 ,if ,moses had stayed in ,horeb until he got the grace he needed1 he never would have started for ,egypt at all4 ,but when he had set out1 ,god met him in the way and blessed him day by day as he needed4 ,many grow discouraged because there is a little opposition2 but if we are going to work for ,god we must expect opposition4 ,no real work was ever done for ,god without opposition4 ,if you think that you are going to have the approval of a godless world1 and of cold ,christians1 as you launch out into the deep with your net1 you are greatly mistaken4 ,a man said to me some time ago1 that when he was converted he commenced to do some work in connection with the ,church2 he was greatly discouraged because some of the older ,christians threw cold water on him1 so he gave up the whole thing4 ,i pity a man who cannot take a little cold water without being any the worse for it4 ,why1 many of the ,christians in old times had to go through the fire1 and did not shrink from it4 ,a little cold water never hurts any one4 ,others say they have so many cares and troubles1 they have as much as they can carry4 ,well1 a good way to forget your trouble is--to go and help some one else who is carrying a heavier burden than yourself4 ,it was when ,job began to pray for his friends that he forgot his own troubles4 ,paul gloried in his infirmity1 and in the tribulations he had to undergo1 so that the power of ,christ might all the more rest upon him4 ,he gloried in the ,cross3 and you must bear in mind that the ,cross was not so easy to bear in his day as it is in ours4 ,every one was speaking against it4 ,i glory in the ,cross of ,christ1 he said4 ,when a man gets to that point1 do you tell me that ,god cannot use him to build up ,his kingdom8 ,in his second letter to the ,corinthians1 ,paul speaks of the thorn in the flesh2 he prayed the ,lord to take it away4 ,the ,lord said ,he was not going to take it away3 but ,he would give ,his servant grace to bear it4 ,so the apostle learned to thank ,god for the thorn1 because he got more grace4 ,it is when the days are dark that people are brought nearer to ,god4 ,i suppose that is what ,paul meant4 ,if there is any child of ,god who has a thorn in the flesh1 ,god has grace enough to help you to bear it if you will but go to ,him for it4 ,the difficulty is that so many are looking at their troubles and sorrows1 instead of looking toward the glorious reward1 and pressing on their way by ,god's help4 ,in ii ,corinthians #i3h1 we read3 ,god is able to make all grace abound towards you2 that ye1 always having all sufficiency in all things1 may abound to every good work4 ,there are three thoughts here--,god makes all grace to abound1 that we may have all sufficiency in all things4 ,i think this is one of the most wonderful verses in the ,bible4 ,there is plenty of grace4 ,many ,christians1 if they have grace enough to keep them from outward sin1 seem to be perfectly satisfied2 they do not press on to get fullness of grace1 so as to be ready for ,god's work4 ,many are satisfied to go into the stream of grace ankle deep1 when ,god wants them to swim in it4 ,if we always came to meetings desiring to get strength1 then we should be able to go out to work and speak for ,christ4 ,there are a great many who would be used of ,god1 if they would only come boldly to ,his throne of grace1 and find grace to help in time of need4 ,is it not a time of need now8 ,god has said1 ,i will pour water on him that is thirsty4 ,do we thirst for a deeper work of grace in our hearts8--for the anointing of the ,spirit8 ,here is the promise3 ,i will pour water on him that is thirsty4 ,let all who are hungering and thirsting for blessing come and receive it4 ,another reason why many ,christians do not get anything is--because they do not give out to others4 ,they are satisfied with present attainments1 instead of growing in grace4 ,we are not the fountain2 we are only a channel for the grace of ,god to flow through4 ,there is not one of us but ,god wants to use in building up ,his kingdom4 ,that little boy1 that grey-haired man1 these young men and maidens2 all are needed3 and there is a work for all4 ,we want to believe that ,god has grace enough to qualify us to go out and work for ,him4 ,if we have known ,jesus ,christ for twenty years or more1 and if we have not been able to introduce an anxious soul to ,him1 there has been something wrong somewhere4 ,if we were full of grace1 we should be ready for any call that comes to us4 ,paul said1 when he had that famous interview with ,christ on the way to ,damascus1 ,lord1 what wilt ,thou have me to do8 ,isaiah said1 ,here am ,i1 send me4 ,oh that ,god would fill all ,his people with grace1 so that we may see more wonderful things than ,he has ever permitted us to see6 ,no man can tell what he can do1 until he moves forward4 ,if we do that in the name of ,god1 instead of there being a few scores or hundreds converted1 there will be thousands flocking into the ,kingdom of ,god4 ,remember1 that we honor ,god when we ask for great things4 ,it is a humiliating thing to think that we are satisfied with very small results4 ,it is said that ,alexander the ,great had a favorite ,general to whom he had given permission to draw upon the royal treasury for any amount4 ,on one occasion this ,general had made a draft for such an enormous sum that the ,treasurer refused to honor it until he consulted the ,emperor4 ,so he went into his presence and told him what the ,general had done4 ,did you not honor the draft8 said the ,emperor4 ,no2 ,i refused till ,i had seen your ,majesty2 because the amount was so great4 ,the ,emperor was indignant4 ,his ,treasurer said that he was afraid of offending him if he had paid the amount4 ,do you not know1 replied the ,emperor1 that he honors me and my kingdom by making a large draft8 ,whether the story be authentic or not1 it is true that we honor ,god when we ask for great things4 ,it is said that on one occasion when ,caesar gave a very valuable present1 the receiver replied that it was too costly a gift4 ,the ,emperor answered that it was not too great for ,caesar to give4 ,our ,god is a great ,king2 and ,he delights to use us3 so let us delight to ask ,him for great grace1 that we may go out and work for him4 ,i find that many ,christians are in trouble about the future2 they think they will not have grace enough to die by4 ,it is much more important that we should have grace enough to live by4 ,it seems to me that death is of very little importance in the meantime4 ,when the dying hour comes there will be dying grace2 but you do not require dying grace to live by4 ,if ,i am going to live perhaps for fifteen or twenty years1 what do ,i want with dying grace8 ,i am far more anxious about having grace enough for my present work4 ,i have sometimes been asked if ,i had grace enough to enable me to go to the stake and die as a martyr4 ,no2 what do ,i want with martyr's grace8 ,i do not like suffering2 but if ,god should call on me to die a martyr's death1 ,he would give me martyr's grace4 ,if ,i have to pass through some great affliction1 ,i know ,god will give me grace when the time comes2 but ,i do not want it till it comes4 ,there is a story of a martyr in the second century4 ,he was brought before the king1 and told that if he did not recant they would banish him4 ,said he1 ,o king1 you cannot banish me from ,christ2 for ,he has said1 ,i will never leave thee nor forsake thee6 ,the apostle ,john was banished to the island of ,patmos2 but it was the best thing that could have happened3 for if ,john had not been sent there1 probably we should never have had that grand ,book of ,revelation4 ,john could not be separated from his ,master4 ,so it was with this brave martyr1 of whom ,i was speaking4 ,the king said to him1 ,then ,i will take away your property from you4 ,you cannot do that3 for my treasure is laid up on high1 where you cannot get at it8 ,then ,i will kill you4 ,you can not do that2 for ,i have been dead these forty years3 my life is hid with ,christ in ,god4 ,the king said1 ,what are you going to do with such a fanatic as that8 ,let us remember that if we have not grace enough for service1 we have no one to blame but ourselves4 ,we are not straitened in ,god3 ,he has abundance of grace to qualify us to work for ,him4 ,,more ,,to ,,follow4 ,i heard a story about two members of a ,church3 one was a wealthy man1 and the other was one of those who cannot take care of their finances--he was always in debt4 ,the rich brother had compassion on his poor brother4 ,he wanted to give him some money2 but he would not give it to the man all at once3 he knew he would not use it properly4 ,so he sent the amount to the minister1 and asked him to supply the needs of this poor brother4 ,the minister used to send him a five-dollar bill1 and put on the envelope ,more to follow4 ,i can imagine how welcome the gift would be2 but the best of all was the promise--,more to follow4 ,so it is with ,god3 there is always more to follow4 ,it is such a pity that we are not ready to be used by ,god when ,he wants to use us4 ,dear friends1 let me put this question to you3 ,are you full of grace8 ,you shake your head4 ,well1 it is our privilege to be full4 ,what is the best way to get full of grace8 ,it is to be emptied of self4 ,how can we be emptied8 ,suppose you wish to get the air out of this tumbler2 how can you do it8 ,i will tell you3 by pouring water into the tumbler till it is full to overflowing4 ,that is the way the ,lord empties us of self4 ,he fills us with ,his grace4 ,i will pour water on him that is thirsty4 ,are you hungering to get rid of your sinful selves8 ,then let the ,spirit of ,god come in and fill you4 ,god is able to do it4 ,see what ,he did for ,john ,bunyan--how ,he made one of the mightiest instruments for good the world ever saw1 out of that swearing ,bedford tinker4 ,if we had a telescope which would enable us to look into heaven as ,stephen did1 ,i can imagine we should see the thief1 who believed in ,jesus while on the cross1 very near the throne4 ,ask him how he got there2 and he would tell you it was through the grace of ,god4 ,see how the grace of ,god could save a ,mary ,magdalene possessed of seven devils6 ,ask her what it was that melted her heart3 and she would tell you that it was the grace of ,god4 ,look again at that woman whom ,christ met at the well at ,sychar4 ,the ,saviour offered her a cup of the living water3 she drank1 and now she walks the chrystal pavement of heaven4 ,see how the grace of ,god could change ,zaccheus1 the hated publican of ,jericho6 ,now he is in yonder world of light2 he was brought there by the sovereign grace of ,god4 ,you will have noticed that many of those who were about the most unlikely1 have1 by the power of ,god's grace1 become very eminent in ,his service4 ,look at the twelve apostles of ,christ2 they were all unlettered men4 ,this ought to encourage all whose education is limited to give themselves to ,god's work4 ,when our earthly work is ended1 then1 like our ,master1 we shall enter into glory4 ,it has been well remarked3 ,grace is glory militant2 and glory is grace triumphant4 ,grace is glory begun2 glory is grace made perfect4 ,grace is the first degree of glory3 glory is the highest degree of grace4 ,oh1 to grace how great a debtor ,daily ,i'm constrained to be6 ,let ,thy grace1 ,lord1 like a fetter1 ,bind my wandering heart to thee4 ,prone to wander1 ,lord1 ,i feel it-- ,prone to leave the ,god ,i love-- ,here's my heart1 oh take and seal it1 ,seal it for ,thy courts above4 ,,chapter ,,viii4 ,a ,,chime ,,of ,,gospel ,,bells4 ,,in ,baltimore1 a few years ago1 we held a number of meetings for men4 ,i am very fond of this hymn2 and we used to let the choir sing the chorus over and over again1 till all could sing it4 ,oh1 word of words the sweetest1 ,oh1 word in which there lie ,all promise1 all fulfillment1 ,and end of mystery6 ,lamenting or rejoicing1 ,with doubt or terror nigh1 ,i hear the ',come6' of ,jesus1 ,and to ,his cross ,i fly4 ,come6 oh1 come to me6 ,come6 oh1 come to me6 ,weary heavy-laden1 ,come6 oh1 come to ,me6 ,o soul6 why shouldst thou wander ,from such a loving ,friend8 ,cling closer1 closer to ,him1 ,stay with ,him to the end ,alas6 ,i am so helpless1 ,so very full of sin2 ,for ,i am ever wandering1 ,and coming back again4 ,oh1 each time draw me nearer1 ,that soon the ',come6' may be ,nought but a gentle whisper ,to one close1 close to ,thee2 ,then1 over sea and mountain1 ,far from1 or near1 my home1 ,i'll take ,thy hand and follow1 ,at that sweet whisper1 ',come6' ,there was a man in one of the meetings who had been brought there against his will2 he had come through some personal influence brought to bear upon him4 ,when he got to the meeting1 they were singing the chorus of this hymn-- ,come6 come6 come6 ,he said afterwards he thought he never saw so many fools together in his life before4 ,the idea of a number of men standing there singing1 ,come6 come6 come6 ,when he started home he could not get this little word out of his head2 it kept coming back all the time4 ,he went into a saloon1 and ordered some whiskey1 thinking to drown it4 ,but he could not2 it still kept coming back4 ,he went into another saloon1 and drank some more whiskey2 but the words kept ringing in his ears3 ,come6 come6 come6 ,he said to himself1 ,what a fool ,i am for allowing myself to be troubled in this way6 ,he went to a third saloon2 had another glass1 and finally got home4 ,he went off to bed1 but could not sleep2 it seemed as if the very pillow kept whispering the word1 ,come6 ,come6 ,he began to be angry with himself3 ,what a fool ,i was for ever going to that meeting at all6 ,when he got up he took the little hymn book1 found the hymn1 and read it over4 ,what nonsense6 he said to himself2 the idea of a rational man being disturbed by that hymn4 ,he set fire to the hymn book2 but he could not burn up the little word ,come6 ,heaven and earth shall pass away3 but ,my word shall not pass away4 ,he declared he would never go to another of the meetings2 but the next night he came again4 ,when he got there1 strange to say1 they were singing the same hymn4 ,there is that miserable old hymn again1 he said2 what a fool ,i am for coming6 ,i tell you1 when the ,spirit of ,god lays hold of a man1 he does a good many things he did not intend to do4 ,to make a long story short1 that man rose in a meeting of young converts1 and told the story that ,i have now told you4 ,pulling out the little hymn book for he had bought another copy and opening it at this hymn1 he said3 ,i think this hymn is the sweetest and the best in the ,english language4 ,god blessed it to the saving of my soul4 ,and yet this was the very hymn he had despised4 ,i want to take up this little word ,come6 ,sometimes people forget the text of a sermon2 but this text will be short enough for any one to remember4 ,let me ring out a chime of ,gospel bells1 every one of which says1 ,come6 ,the first bell ,i will ring is1 ,,come ,,and ,,hear6 ,incline your ear1 and come unto me2 hear1 and your soul shall live2 and ,i will make an everlasting covenant with you1 even the sure mercies of ,david4 ,incline your ear1 ,god says4 ,you have sometimes seen a man who is a little deaf1 and cannot catch every word1 put his hand up to his ear and lean forward4 ,i have seen a man sometimes put up both hands to his ears1 as if he were determined to catch every word4 ,i like to see that4 ,this is the figure that the prophet uses when he says on ,god's behalf1 ,incline your ear4 ,man lost spiritual life and communion with his ,maker by listening to the voice of the tempter1 instead of the voice of ,god4 ,we get life again by listening to the voice of ,god4 ,the ,word of ,god gives life4 ,the words that ,i speak unto you1 says ,christ1 they are spirit1 and they are life4 ,so1 what people need is--to incline their ear1 and hear4 ,it is a great thing when the ,gospel preacher gets the ear of a congregation--,i mean the inner ear4 ,for a man has not only two ears in his head2 he has also what we may call the outer ear1 and the inner ear--the ear of the soul4 ,you may speak to the outward ear1 and not reach the ear of the soul at all4 ,many in these days are like the foolish people to whom the prophet ,jeremiah spoke3 ,which have eyes1 and see not2 which have ears1 and hear not4 ,there are many in every congregation whose attention ,i am not able to secure for five minutes together4 ,almost any little thing will divert their minds4 ,we need to give heed to the words of the ,lord3 ,he that hath ears to hear1 let him hear4 ,you remember when ,peter was sent to ,cornelius1 he was to speak to him words whereby he and his house were to be saved4 ,if you are to be saved1 it must be by listening to the ,word of ,god4 ,here is the promise3 ,hear2 and your soul shall live4 ,there was an architect in ,chicago who was converted4 ,in giving his testimony1 he said he had been in the habit of attending church for a great many years1 but he could not say that he had really heard a sermon all the time4 ,he said that when the minister gave out the text and began to preach1 he used to settle himself in the corner of the pew and work out the plans of some building4 ,he could not tell how many plans he had prepared while the minister was preaching4 ,he was the architect for one or two companies2 and he used to do all his planning in that way4 ,you see1 ,satan came in between him and the preacher1 and caught away the good seed of the ,word4 ,i have often preached to people1 and have been perfectly amazed to find they could hardly tell one solitary word of the sermon2 even the text had completely gone from them4 ,a colored man once said that a good many of his congregation would be lost because they were too generous4 ,he saw that the people looked rather surprised2 so he said1 ,perhaps you think ,i have made a mistake2 and that ,i ought to have said you will be lost because you are not generous enough4 ,that is not so2 ,i meant just what ,i said4 ,you give away too many sermons4 ,you hear them1 as it were1 for other people4 ,so there are a good many now hearing me who are listening for those behind them3 they say the message is a very good one for neighbor ,so-and-so2 and they pass it over their shoulders1 till it gets clear out at the door4 ,you laugh2 but you know it is so4 ,listen6 ,verily1 verily1 ,i say unto you1 he that heareth ,my word1 and believeth on ,him that sent ,me1 hath everlasting life1 and shall not come into condemnation2 but is passed from death unto life4 ,the next note in this peal of bells ,i wish to ring out is-- ,,come ,,and ,,see6 ,scripture not only uses the ear1 but the eye1 in illustrating the way of salvation4 ,when a man both hears and sees a thing1 he remembers it twice as long as if he only heard it4 ,you remember what ,philip said to ,nathanael3 ,philip findeth ,nathanael1 and saith unto him1 we have found ,him of whom ,moses in the ,law1 and the ,prophets1 did write--,jesus of ,nazareth1 the son of ,joseph4 ,and ,nathanael said unto him1 ,can there any good thing come out of ,nazareth8 ,philip saith unto him1 ,come and see4 ,philip was a wise winner of souls4 ,he brought his friend to ,christ4 ,nathanael had one interview with the son of ,god2 he became ,his disciple and never left ,him4 ,if ,philip had gone on discussing the matter with him1 and had tried to prove that some good thing could come out of ,nazareth1 he might have never been a disciple at all4 ,after all1 we do not gain much by discussion4 ,let objectors or inquirers only get one personal interview with the ,son of ,god2 that will scatter all their darkness1 all their prejudice1 and all their unbelief4 ,the moment that ,philip succeeded in getting ,nathanael to ,christ1 the work was done4 ,so we say to you1 ,come and see6 ,i thought1 when ,i was converted1 that my friends had been very unfaithful to me1 because they had not told me about ,christ4 ,i thought ,i would have all my friends converted inside of twenty-four hours2 and ,i was quite disappointed when they did not at once see ,christ to be the ,lily of the ,valley1 and the ,rose of ,sharon1 and the ,bright and ,morning ,star4 ,i wondered why it was4 ,no doubt many of those who hear me now have had that experience2 you thought when you saw ,christ in all ,his beauty that you could soon make your friends see ,him in the same light4 ,but we need to learn that ,god alone can do it4 ,if there is a skeptic now hearing me1 ,i want to say that one personal interview with the ,son of ,god will scatter all your infidelity and atheism4 ,one night1 in the inquiry-room1 ,i met the wife of an atheist1 who had been brought to ,god at one of our meetings4 ,she was converted at the same time4 ,she had brought two of her daughters to the meeting1 desiring that they too should know ,christ4 ,i said to the mother3 ,how is it with your skepticism now8 ,oh1 said she1 it is all gone4 ,when ,christ gets into the heart1 atheism must go out2 if a man will only come and take one trustful1 loving look at the ,saviour1 there will be no desire to leave ,him again4 ,a gentleman was walking down the street in ,baltimore1 a few years ago4 ,it was near ,christmas-time1 and many of the shop-windows were filled with ,christmas presents1 toys1 etc4 ,as this gentleman passed along1 he saw three little girls standing before a shop window1 and he heard two of them trying to describe to the third the things that were in the window4 ,it aroused his attention1 and he wondered what it could mean4 ,he went back1 and found that the middle one was blind--she had never been able to see--and her two sisters were endeavoring to tell her how the things looked4 ,the gentleman stood beside them for some time1 and listened2 he said it was most interesting to hear them trying to describe the different articles to the blind child--they found it a difficult task4 ,as he told me1 ,i said to myself1 ,that is just my position in trying to tell other men about ,christ3 ,i may talk about ,him2 and yet they see no beauty in ,him that they should desire ,him4 ,but if they will only come to ,him1 ,he will open their eyes and reveal ,himself to them in all ,his loveliness and grace4 ,looking at it from the outside1 there was not much beauty in the ,tabernacle that ,moses erected in the desert4 ,it was covered on the outside with badgers' skins--and there was not much beauty in them4 ,if you were to pass into the inside1 then you would find out the beauty of the coverings4 ,so the sinner sees no beauty in ,christ till he comes to ,him--then he can see it4 ,you have looked at the windows of a grand church erected at the cost of many thousands of dollars4 ,from the outside they did not seem very beautiful2 but get inside1 when the rays of the sun are striking upon the stained glass1 and you begin to understand what others have told you of their magnificence4 ,so it is when you have come into personal contact with ,christ2 you find ,him to be the very ,friend you need4 ,therefore we extend to all the sweet ,gospel invitation ,come and see6 ,let me now ring out the third bell-- ,,come ,,and ,,drink6 ,ho1 every one that thirsteth1 come ye to the waters3 and he that hath no money2 come ye1 buy1 and eat3 yea1 come1 buy wine and milk without money and without price4 ,if you will come and drink at this fountain1 ,christ says you shall never thirst again4 ,he has promised to quench your thirst4 ,if any man thirst1 ,he says1 let him come unto ,me and drink4 ,i thank ,god for those words3 ,if any man4 ,that does not mean merely a select few respectable people2 it takes in all--every drunkard1 every harlot1 every thief1 every self-righteous ,pharisee4 ,if any man thirst4 ,how this world is thirsting for something that will satisfy6 ,what fills the places of amusement--the dance houses1 the music halls1 and the theaters1 night after night8 ,men and women are thirsting for something they have not got4 ,the moment a man turns his back upon ,god1 he begins to thirst2 and that thirst will never be quenched until he returns to the fountain of living waters4 ,as the prophet ,jeremiah tells us1 we have forsaken the fountain of living waters1 and hewn out for ourselves cisterns1 broken cisterns1 that can hold no water4 ,there is a thirst this world can never quench3 the more we drink of its pleasures1 the thirstier we become4 ,we cry out for more and more2 and we are all the while being dragged down lower and lower4 ,but there is a fountain opened to the ,house of ,david 4 4 4 for sin and for uncleanness4 ,let us press up to it1 and drink and live4 ,i remember after one of the great battles in the ,war we were coming down the ,tennessee ,river with a company of wounded men4 ,it was in the spring of the year1 and the water was not clear4 ,you know that the cry of a wounded man is3 ,water6 water6 especially in a hot country4 ,i remember taking a glass of the muddy water to one of these men4 ,although he was very thirsty1 he only drank a little of it4 ,he handed the glass back to me1 and as he did so1 he said1 ,oh for a draught of water from my father's well6 ,are there any thirsty ones here8 ,come and drink of the fountain opened in ,christ2 your longing will be satisfied1 and you will never thirst again4 ,it will be in you a well of water springing up into everlasting life4 ,water rises to its own level2 and as this water has come down from the throne of ,god1 it will carry us back to the presence of ,god4 ,come1 ,o ye thirsty ones1 stoop down and drink1 and live6 ,you are all invited3 come along6 ,when ,moses took his rod and struck the flinty rock in the wilderness1 out of it there came a pure crystal stream of water1 which flowed or through that dry and barren land4 ,all that the poor thirsty ,israelites had to do was to stoop and drink4 ,it was free to all4 ,so the grace of ,god is free to all4 ,god invites you to come and take it3 will you come8 ,i remember being in a large city where ,i noticed that the people resorted to a favorite well in one of the parks4 ,i said to a man one day1 ,does the well never run dry8 ,the man was drinking of the water out of the well2 and as he stopped drinking1 he smacked his lips1 and said3 ,they have never been able to pump it dry yet4 ,they tried it a few years ago4 ,they put the fire engines to work1 and tried all they could to pump the well dry2 but they found there was a river flowing right under the city4 ,thank ,god1 the well of salvation never gets dry1 though the saints of ,god have been drinking from it for six thousand years6 ,abel1 ,enoch ,noah1 ,abraham4 ,moses1 ,elijah1 the ,apostles all have drunk from it2 and they are now up yonder1 where they are drinking of the stream that flows from the throne of ,god4 ,they shall hunger no more1 neither thirst any more2 neither shall the sun light on them1 nor any heat4 ,for the ,lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them1 and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters3 and ,god shall wipe away all tears from their eyes4 ,let me ring another ,gospel bell3 ,,come ,,and ,,dine6 ,my brother1 my sister--are you hungry8 ,then come along and dine4 ,some people are afraid of being converted1 because they think they will not hold out4 ,mr4 ,rainsford once said1 ,if the ,lord gives us eternal life1 ,he will surely give us all that is needful to preserve it4 ,he not only gives life2 but ,he gives us our daily bread to feed that life4 ,after the ,saviour had risen from the dead1 ,he had not appeared to ,his disciples for some days4 ,peter said to the others1 ,i go a fishing4 ,seven of them started off in their boats4 ,they toiled all night but caught nothing4 ,in the grey of the morning1 they saw a ,stranger on the shore4 ,he addressed them and said ,children1 have ye any meat8 ,they told ,him they had not4 ,cast the net on the right side of the ship2 and ye shall find4 ,i can imagine they said to each other1 ,what good is that going to do8 ,we have been fishing here all night1 and have got nothing8 ,the idea that there should be fish on one side of the boat1 and not on the other6 ,however1 they obeyed the command2 and they had such a haul that there was no room for the fish in the boat4 ,then one of them said1 ,it is the ,lord4 ,when he heard that1 ,peter sprang right into the sea1 and swam to the shore2 and the others pulled the boat to land4 ,when they reached the shore the ,master said1 ,come and dine4 ,what a meal that must have been4 ,there was the ,lord of ,glory feeding ,his disciples4 ,if ,he could set a table for ,his people in the wilderness1 and feed three millions of ,israelites for forty years1 can ,he not give us our daily bread8 ,i do not mean only the bread that perisheth2 but the ,bread that cometh from above4 ,if ,he feeds the birds of the air1 surely ,he will feed ,his children made in ,his own image6 ,if ,he numbers the very hairs of our head1 ,he will take care to supply all our temporal wants4 ,not only so3 ,he will give us the ,bread of ,life for the nourishment of the soul--the life that the world knows nothing of--if we will but go to ,him4 ,i am the ,bread of ,life1 ,he says4 ,as we feed on ,him by faith1 we get strength4 ,let our thoughts rest upon ,him2 and ,he will lift us above ourselves1 and above the world1 and satisfy our utmost desires4 ,another ,gospel bell is-- ,,come ,,and ,,rest6 ,dear friend1 do you not need rest8 ,there is a restlessness all over the world to-day4 ,men are sighing and struggling after rest4 ,the cry of the world is1 ,where can rest be found8 ,the rich man that we read of in the parable pulled down his barns1 that he might build greater2 and said to his soul1 ,take thine ease4 ,he thought he was going to find rest in wealth2 but he was disappointed4 ,that night his soul was summoned away4 ,no2 there is no rest in wealth or pleasure4 ,others think they will succeed in drowning their sorrows and troubles by indulging in drink2 but that will only increase them4 ,there is no peace1 saith my ,god1 to the wicked3 they are like the troubled sea that cannot rest4 ,we sometimes talk of the ocean as being as calm as a sea of glass2 but it is never at rest3 and here we have a faithful picture of the wicked man and woman4 ,o weary soul1 hear the sweet voice that comes ringing down through the ages3 ,come unto me1 all ye that labor1 and are heavy-laden2 and ,i will give you rest4 ,thank ,god1 ,he does not sell it6 ,if ,he did1 some of us are so poor we could not buy2 but we can all take a gift4 ,that little boy there knows how to take a gift2 that old man1 living on borrowed time1 and almost on the verge of another world1 knows how to take a gift4 ,the gift ,jesus wants to bestow is rest3 ,rest for time1 and rest for eternity4 ,every weary soul may have this rest if he will4 ,but you must come to ,christ and get it4 ,nowhere else can this rest be found4 ,if you go to the world with your cares1 your troubles1 and your anxieties1 all it can do is to put a few more on the top of them4 ,the world is a poor place to go to for sympathy4 ,as some one has said3 ,if you roll your burdens anywhere but on ,christ1 they will roll back on you with more weight than ever4 ,cast them on ,christ2 and ,he will carry them for you4 ,here is another bell-- ,,come ,,and ,,reason6 ,perhaps there are some infidels reading this4 ,they are fond of saying to us1 ,come and reason4 ,but ,i want to draw their attention to the verses that go before this one in the first chapter of ,isaiah4 ,the trouble with a good many skeptics is this--they take a sentence here and there from ,scripture without reference to the context4 ,let us see what this passage says3 ,when ye spread forth your hands1 ,i will hide mine eyes from you3 yea1 when ye make many prayers ,i will not hear3 your hands are full of blood4 ,wash you1 make you clean2 put away the evil of your doings from before ,mine eyes2 cease to do evil2 learn to do well2 seek judgment1 relieve the oppressed1 judge the fatherless1 plead for the widow4 ,then we have the gracious invitation1 ,come now1 and let us reason together4 ,do you think ,god is going to reason with a man whose hands are dripping with blood1 and before he asks forgiveness and mercy8 ,will ,god reason with a man living in rebellion against ,him8 ,nay4 ,but if we turn from and confess our sin1 then ,he will reason with us1 and pardon us4 ,though your sins be as scarlet1 they shall be as white as snow3 though they be red like crimson1 they shall be as wool4 ,but if a man persists in his rebellion against ,god1 there is no invitation to him to come and reason1 and receive pardon4 ,if ,i have been justly condemned to death by the law of the ,state1 and am waiting the execution of my sentence1 ,i am not in a position to reason with the governor4 ,if he chooses to send me a free pardon1 the first thing ,i have to do is to accept it2 then he may allow me to come into his presence4 ,but we must bear in mind that ,god is above our reason4 ,when man fell1 his reason became perverted2 and he was not in a position to reason with ,god4 ,if any man willeth to do ,his will he shall know of the teaching4 ,we must be willing to forsake our sins4 ,let the wicked forsake his way1 and the unrighteous man his thoughts3 and let him return unto the ,lord1 and ,he will have mercy upon him2 and to our ,god1 for ,he will abundantly pardon1 ,the moment a man is willing to part with his sins1 ,god meets him in grace and offers him peace and pardon4 ,the next bell ,i would like to sound out is-- ,,come ,,to ,,the ,,marriage6 ,behold1 ,i have prepared my dinner3 4 4 4 all things are ready2 come unto the marriage4 ,who would not feel highly honored if they were invited to some fine residence1 to the wedding of one of the members of the ,president's family8 ,i can imagine you would feel rather proud of having received such an invitation4 ,you would want all your friends to know it4 ,probably you may never get such an invitation4 ,but ,i have a far grander invitation for you here than that4 ,i cannot speak for others2 but if ,i know my own heart1 ,i would rather be torn to pieces to-night1 limb from limb1 and die in the glorious hope of being at the marriage-supper of the ,lamb1 than live in this world a thousand years and miss that appointment at the last4 ,blessed is he that is called to the marriage-supper of the ,lamb4 ,it will be a fearful thing for any of us to see ,abraham1 ,isaac1 and ,jacob taking their place in the kingdom of ,god1 and be ourselves thrust out4 ,this is no myth1 my friends2 it is a real invitation4 ,every man and woman is invited4 ,all things are now ready4 ,the feast has been prepared at great expense4 ,you may spurn the grace1 and the gift of ,god2 but you must bear in mind that it cost ,god a good deal before ,he could provide this feast4 ,when ,he gave ,christ ,he gave the richest jewel that heaven had4 ,and now ,he sends out the invitation4 ,he commands ,his servants to go into the highways1 and hedges1 and lanes1 and compel them to come in1 that ,his house may be full4 ,who will come8 ,you say you are not fit to come8 ,if the ,president invited you to the ,white ,house1 and the invitation said you were to come just as you were2 and if the sentinel at the gate stopped you because you did not wear a dress suit1 what would you do8 ,would you not show him the document signed in the name of the ,president8 ,then he would stand aside and let you pass4 ,so1 my friend1 if you can prove to me that you are a sinner1 ,i can prove to you that you are invited to this ,gospel feast--to this marriage supper of the ,lamb4 ,let me ring out another bell in this ,gospel chime-- ,,come1 ,,inherit ,,the ,,kingdom6 ,then shall the ,king say unto them on ,his right hand1 ,come1 ye blessed of ,my ,father1 inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world4 ,a kingdom6--think of that6 ,think of a poor man in this world1 struggling with poverty and want1 invited to become possessor of a kingdom6 ,it is no fiction2 it is described as an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled1 and that fadeth not away1 reserved in heaven for you1 who are kept by the power of ,god through faith unto salvation1 ready to be revealed in the last time4 ,we are called to be kings and priests3 that is a high calling4 ,surely no one who hears me intends to miss that kingdom6 ,christ said1 ,seek ye first the ,kingdom of ,god4 ,those who inherit it shall go no more out4 ,yet another bell-- ,,come ,,up ,,hither6 ,in the ,revelation we find that the two witnesses were called up to heaven when their testimony was ended4 ,so if we are faithful in the service of our ,king1 we shall by and by hear a voice saying1 ,come up hither6 ,there is going to be a separation one day4 ,the man who has been persecuting his godly wife will some day find her missing4 ,that drunkard who beats his children because they have been taught the way into the ,kingdom of ,god1 will miss them some day4 ,they will be taken up out of the darkness1 and away from the persecution1 up into the presence of ,god4 ,when the voice of ,god saying1 ,come up hither is heard1 calling ,his children home1 there will be a grand jubilee4 ,that glorious day will soon dawn4 ,lift up your heads1 for the time of your redemption draweth nigh4 ,one more bell to complete the chime-- ,,whosoever ,,will1 ,,let ,,him ,,come6 ,it is the last time that the word ,come appears in the ,bible2 and it occurs there over one thousand nine hundred times4 ,we find it away back in ,genesis1 ,come1 thou and all thy house1 into the ark2 and it goes right along through ,scripture4 ,prophets1 apostles1 and preachers1 have been ringing it out all through the ages4 ,now the record is about to be closed1 and ,christ tells ,john to put in one more invitation4 ,after the ,lord had been in glory for about sixty years1 perhaps ,he saw some poor man stumbling over one of the apostles' letters about the doctrine of election4 ,so ,he came to ,john in ,patmos1 and ,john was in the ,spirit on the ,lord's ,day4 ,christ said to ,his disciple1 ,write these things to the ,churches4 ,i can imagine ,john's pen moved very easily and very swiftly that day2 for the hand of his ,lord was upon him4 ,the ,master said to him1 ,before you close up the ,book1 put in one more invitation2 and make it so broad that the whole world shall know they are included1 and not a single one may feel that he is left out4 ,john began to write ,the ,spirit and the ,bride say1 ,come1 that is1 the ,spirit and the ,church2 and let him that heareth say1 ,come6 ,if you have heard and received the message yourself1 pass it on to those near you2 your religion is not a very real thing if it does not affect some one else4 ,we have to get rid of this idea that the world is going to be reached by ministers alone4 ,all those who have drunk of the cup of salvation must pass it around4 ,let him that is athirst1 come4 ,but there are some so deaf that they cannot hear2 others are not thirsty enough or they think they are not4 ,i have seen men in our after-meetings with two streams of tears running down their cheeks2 and yet they said the trouble with them was that they were not anxious enough4 ,they were anxious to be anxious4 ,probably ,christ saw that men would say they did not feel thirsty2 so ,he told the apostle to make the invitation still broader4 ,so the last invitation let down into a thirsty world is this3 ,whosoever will1 let him take the water of life freely4 ,thank ,god for those words ,whosoever will6 ,who will come and take it8 ,that is the question4 ,you have the power to accept or to reject the invitation4 ,a man in one meeting once was honest enough to say ,i won't4 ,if ,i had it in my power ,i would bring this whole audience to a decision now1 either for or against4 ,i hope many now reading these words will say1 ,i will6 ,if ,god says we can1 all the devils in hell cannot stop us4 ,all the infidels in the world cannot prevent us4 ,that little boy1 that little girl1 can say1 ,i will6 ,if it were necessary1 ,god would send down a legion of angels to help you2 but ,he has given you the power1 and you can accept ,christ this very minute if you are really in earnest4 ,let me say that it is the easiest thing in the world to become a ,christian1 and it is also the most difficult4 ,you will say3 ,that is a contradiction1 a paradox4 ,i will illustrate what ,i mean4 ,a little nephew of mine in ,chicago1 a few years ago1 took my ,bible and threw it down on the floor4 ,his mother said1 ,charlie1 pick up ,uncle's ,bible4 ,the little fellow said he would not1 ,charlie1 do you know what that word means8 ,she soon found out that he did1 and that he was not going to pick up the ,book4 ,his will had come right up against his mother's will4 ,i began to be quite interested in the struggle2 ,i knew if she did not break his will1 he would some day break her heart4 ,she repeated1 ,charlie1 go and pick up ,uncle's ,bible1 and put it on the table4 ,the little fellow said he could not do it4 ,i will punish you if you do not4 ,he saw a strange look in her eye1 and the matter began to get serious4 ,he did not want to be punished1 and he knew his mother would punish him if he did not lift the ,bible4 ,so he straightened every bone and muscle in him1 and he said he could not do it4 ,i really believe the little fellow had reasoned himself into the belief that he could not do it4 ,his mother knew he was only deceiving himself2 so she kept him right to the point4 ,at last he went down1 put both his arms around the ,book1 and tugged away at it2 but he still said he could not do it4 ,the truth was he did not want to4 ,he got up again without lifting it4 ,the mother said1 ,charlie1 ,i am not going to talk to you any more4 ,this matter has to be settled2 pick up that ,book1 or ,i will punish you4 ,at last she broke his will1 and then he found it as easy as it is for me to turn my hand4 ,he picked up the ,bible1 and laid it on the table4 ,so it is with the sinner2 if you are really willing to take the ,water of ,life1 you can do it4 ,i heard the voice of ,jesus say1 ',come unto ,me1 and rest2 ,lay down1 thou weary one1 lay down1 ,thy head upon ,my breast4' ,i came to ,jesus as ,i was-- ,weary1 and worn1 and sad1 ,i found in ,him a resting-place1 ,and ,he has made me glad4 ,i heard the voice of ,jesus say1 ',behold1 ,i freely give ,the living water--thirsty one1 ,stoop down1 and drink1 and live4' ,i came to ,jesus1 and ,i drank ,of that life-giving stream2 ,my thirst was quenched1 my soul revived1 ,and now ,i live in ,him4 ,i heard the voice of ,jesus say1 ',i am this dark world's ,light3 ,look unto ,me1 thy morn shall rise1 ,and all thy day be bright4' ,i looked to ,jesus1 and ,i found ,in ,him my ,star1 my ,sun2 ,and in that ,light of life ,i'll walk ,till traveling days are done4 ,dr4 ,h4 ,bonar ,,gospel ,,dialogues4 ,i4--,,mr4 ,,moody ,,and ,,rev4 ,,marcus ,,rainsford4 ,,what ,,it ,,is ,,to ,,be ,a ,,child ,,of ,,god4 ,,mr4 ,,moody--,what is it to be a child of ,god8 ,what is the first step8 ,rev4 ,m4 ,rainsford--,well1 sir1 ,i am a child of ,god when ,i become united to the ,son of ,god4 ,the ,son of ,god prayed that all who believed upon ,him should be one with ,him1 as ,he was one with the ,father4 ,believing on ,jesus1 ,i receive ,him1 and become united to ,him2 ,i become1 as it were1 a member of his ,body4 ,i am an heir of ,god1 a joint-heir with ,christ4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what is the best definition of ,faith8 ,mr4 ,r4--,trust in the ,son of ,god1 as the ,saviour ,he has given to us4 ,simple trust1 not only in a creed1 but in a ,person4 ,i trust my soul to ,him4 ,i trust the keeping of my soul to ,him4 ,god has promised that whosoever trusts ,him1 mercy shall compass him on every side4 ,mr4 ,m4--,does not the ,scripture say that the devils believe8 ,mr4 ,r4--,they believe the truth1 do they not8 ,they believe that ,jesus was manifested to destroy them2 and they tremble4 ,i wish we believed as truly and as fully that ,god sent ,his ,son into the world to save us4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what is it to trust8 ,mr4 ,r4--,i take it to mean four things3 7#a7 ,believing on ,christ3 that is1 taking ,him at ,his ,word4 7#b7 ,hoping in ,christ3 that is1 expecting help from ,him1 according to ,his ,word4 7#c7 ,relying on ,christ3 ,that is1 resting on ,him for the times1 and ways1 and circumstances in which ,he may be pleased to fulfill ,his promises according to ,his ,word4 7#d7 ,waiting on ,christ3 that is1 continuing to do so1 notwithstanding delay1 darkness1 barrenness1 perplexing experiences1 and the sentence of death in myself4 ,he may keep me waiting awhile 7,i have kept ,him a long time waiting72 but ,he will not keep me waiting always4 ,believing in ,him1 hoping in ,him1 relying upon ,him1 and waiting for ,him--,i understand to be trusting in ,him4 ,mr4 ,m4--,can all these friends here believe the promises8 ,mr4 ,r4--,the promises are true1 whether we believe them or not4 ,we do not make them true by believing them4 ,god could not charge me with being an unbeliever1 or condemn me for unbelief1 if the promises were not true for me4 ,i could in that case turn round and say3 ,great ,god1 why did you expect me to believe a promise that was not true for me8 ,and yet the ,scriptures set forth unbelief as the greatest sin ,i can continue to commit4 ,mr4 ,m4--,how are we cleansed by the ,blood8 ,mr4 ,r4--,the blood is the life4 ,the sentence upon sinners for their sin was1 ,the soul that sinneth it shall die4 ,that we might not die1 the ,son of ,god died4 ,the blood is the poured-out life of the ,son of ,god1 given as the price1 the atonement1 the substitute1 for the forfeited life of the believer in ,jesus ,christ4 ,any poor sinner who receives ,christ as ,god's gift is cleansed from all sin by ,his ,blood4 ,mr4 ,m4--,was the blood shed for us all8 ,mr4 ,r4-- ,there is a fountain filled with blood1 ,drawn from ,immanuel's veins2 ,and sinners plunged beneath that flood1 ,lose all their guilty stains4 ,the dying thief rejoiced to see ,that fountain in his day2 ,and there may we1 though vile as he1 ,wash all our sins away4 ,mr4 ,m4--,some may think that this is only a hymn1 and that it is not ,scripture4 ,did the ,lord ever say anything similar to what the hymn says8 ,mr4 ,r4--,he said3 ,i have given you the blood upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls4 ,that was said of the picture of the blood of ,christ4 ,and at the ,last ,supper our ,lord said ,his blood was the blood of the new testament which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what is the gift of ,god8 ,mr4 ,r4--,there are three great gifts that ,god has given to us-- 7#a7 ,his blessed ,son4 7#b7 ,the ,holy ,ghost1 the promise of the ,father1 that we might understand the unspeakable gift bestowed on us when ,he gave ,his ,son4 7#c7 ,he has given us ,his ,holy ,word4 ,the ,holy ,ghost has inspired the writers of it that we may read1 and hear1 and know the love that ,god has to us1 in that while we were yet sinners ,christ died for us4 ,we could not have the ,son for our ,saviour1 unless ,god gave ,him4 ,we could not understand the gift of ,god1 unless the ,holy ,ghost had come to quicken us and teach us2 and this ,he does through the ,word4 ,mr4 ,m4--,how much is there in ,christ for us who believe8 ,mr4 ,r4--,in ,him dwelt all the fullness of the ,godhead bodily--fullness of life1 of righteousness1 of sanctification1 of redemption1 title to heaven1 and meetness for it2 all that ,god wants from us1 and all that we want from ,god1 ,he gave in the person of ,christ4 ,mr4 ,m4--,how long does it take ,god to justify a sinner8 ,mr4 ,r4--,how long8 ,the moment we receive ,him we receive authority to enroll ourselves among the children of ,god1 and are then and there justified from all things4 ,the sentence of complete justification does not take long to pronounce4 ,some persons profess to see a difficulty in the variety of ways in which a sinner is said to be justified before ,god3 7#a7 ,justified by ,god2 7#b7 ,justified by ,christ2 7#c7 ,justified by ,his ,blood2 7#d7 ,justified by grace2 7#e7 ,justified by faith2 7#f7 ,justified by works4 ,justification has reference to a court of justice4 ,suppose a sinner standing at the bar of ,god1 the bar of conscience1 and the bar of his fellow-men1 charged with a thousand crimes4 7#a7 ,there is the ,judge3 that is ,god1 who alone can condemn or justify3 ,it is ,god that justifieth4 ,that is justification by ,god4 7#b7 ,there is the ,advocate1 who appears at court for the sinner2 the counselor1 the intercessor3 that is ,christ4 ,justified by ,christ4 7#c7 ,there is next to be considered the ground and reason on account of which the ,advocate pleads before the ,judge4 ,that is the merit of ,his own precious ,blood4 ,that is justification by ,his ,blood4 7#d7 ,next we must remember the law which the ,judge is dispensing4 ,the law of works8 ,nay1 but the law of grace and faith4 ,that is justification by ,his grace4 7#e7 ,and now the judge himself pronounces the result4 ,be it known unto you that through this ,man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins2 and by ,him all that believe are justified from all things4 ,now1 for the first time1 the sinner at the bar knows the fact4 ,this is justification by faith4 7#f7 ,but now the justified man leaves the criminal's dock4 ,he does not return to his prison1 or to his chains4 ,he walks forth from the court-house a justified man2 and all men1 friends or foes1 are made aware that he is free4 ,that is justification by works4 ,mr4 ,m4--,a man says3 ,i have not found peace4 ,how would you deal with him8 ,mr4 ,r4--,he is really looking for the wrong thing4 ,i do not look for peace4 ,i look for ,christ2 and ,i get peace with ,him4 ,some people put peace in the place of ,christ4 ,others put their repentance or prayers in the place of ,christ4 ,anything put in the place of ,christ1 or between the sinner and ,christ1 is in the wrong place4 ,when ,i get ,christ1 ,i possess in ,him everything that belongs to ,him1 as my ,saviour4 ,mr4 ,m4--,some think they cannot be ,christians until they are sanctified4 ,mr4 ,r4--,christ is my ,sanctification1 as much as my ,justification4 ,i cannot be sanctified but by ,his blood4 ,there is a wonderful passage in ,exodus4 ,the high priest there represented in picture the ,lord ,jesus ,christ4 ,there was to be placed on the forefront of the miter of the high priest1 when he stood before ,god1 a plate of pure gold1 and graven upon it as with a signet1 the words3 ,holiness to the ,lord4 ,my faith sees it on the forefront of the miter on the brow of my ,high ,priest in heaven4 ,and it shall be upon ,aaron's forehead1 that ,aaron may bear the iniquity of the holy things1 which the children of ,israel shall hallow in all their holy gifts2 and it shall be always upon his forehead1 that they may be accepted before the ,lord4 ,that was for ,israel of old6 ,that on the brow of ,jesus ,christ is for me4 ,yes--for me1 that ,i may be accepted before the ,lord4 ,as ,i believe this truth it purifies my heart1 it operates on my affections and my desires2 and ,i seek to walk with ,him1 because ,he is my ,sanctification before ,god1 just as ,i trust in ,him as my ,justification--because ,he shed ,his blood for me4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what is it to believe on ,his name8 ,mr4 ,r4--,his name is ,his revealed self4 ,we are informed what it is in ,exodus4 ,moses was in the mount with ,god1 and ,he had shown him wonderful things of kindness and of love4 ,and ,moses said1 ,o ,god1 show me thy glory6 ,and ,he said1 ,i will make all my goodness pass before thee4 ,so ,he put ,moses in the cleft of the rock1 and proclaimed the name of the ,lord3 ,the ,lord1 the ,lord ,god1 merciful and gracious1 longsuffering1 and abundant in goodness and truth2 keeping mercy for thousands1 forgiving iniquity1 transgression1 and sin--there it is1 root and branch and that will by no means clear the guilty4 ,that is ,his name2 and ,his glory ,he will not give unto another3 and to believe in the name of the ,lord is just to shelter under ,his promises4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what is it to receive the ,kingdom of ,god like a little child8 ,mr4 ,r4--,well1 ,i do not believe in a little child being an innocent thing4 ,i think it means that we are to receive it in all our need and helplessness4 ,a little child is the most dependent thing on earth4 ,all its resources are in its parents' love3 all it can do is to cry2 and its necessities explain the meaning to the mother's heart4 ,if we interpret its language1 it means3 ,mother1 wash me2 ,i cannot wash myself4 ,mother1 clothe me2 ,i am naked1 and cannot clothe myself4 ,mother1 feed me2 ,i cannot feed myself4 ,mother1 carry me2 ,i cannot walk4 ,it is written1 ,a mother may forget her sucking child2 yet will not ,i forget thee4 ,this it is to receive the ,kingdom of ,god as a little child--to come to ,jesus in our helplessness and say3 ,lord ,jesus1 wash me6 ,clothe me6 ,feed me6 ,carry me6 ,save me1 ,lord1 or ,i perish4 ,mr4 ,m4--,a good many say they are going to try4 ,what would you say to such8 ,mr4 ,r4--,god wants no man to try4 ,jesus has already tried4 ,he has not only tried1 but ,he has succeeded4 ,it is finished4 ,believe in ,him who has made an end of sins1 making reconciliation for iniquity1 finishing transgression1 and bringing in everlasting righteousness4 ,mr4 ,m4--,if people say they are going to try1 what would you say to them8 ,mr4 ,r4--,i should say1 ,put trusting in the place of trying2 believing in the place of doubting2 and ,i should urge them to come to ,christ as they are1 instead of waiting to be better4 ,there is nothing now between ,god the ,father and the poor sinner1 but the ,lord ,jesus ,christ2 and ,christ has put away sin that ,i may be joined to the ,lord4 ,and he that is joined unto the ,lord is one spirit2 ,and where the spirit of the ,lord is1 there is liberty4 ,mr4 ,m4--,about the last thing an anxious inquirer has to contend with is his feelings4 ,there are hundreds here very anxious to know they are safe in the ,kingdom2 but they think they have not the right kind of feeling4 ,what kind of feeling should they have8 ,mr4 ,r4--,i think there are several of those present who can say that they found a blessing in the after-meetings through one verse of ,scripture4 ,i will quote it as an answer to ,mr4 ,moody's question4 ,who is among you that feareth the ,lord1 that obeyeth the voice of ,his servant1 that walketh in darkness1 and hath no light8 ,let him trust in the name of the ,lord1 and stay upon his ,god4 ,some of you may be walking in darkness2 that is how you feel4 ,what is ,god's command8 ,let him trust in the name of the ,lord1 and stay upon his ,god4 ,if ,i am to trust ,god in the darkness1 ,i am to trust ,him anywhere4 ,mr4 ,m4--,you would advise them1 then1 to trust in the ,lord1 whether they have the right kind of feeling or not8 ,mr4 ,r4--,if ,i were to think of my feelings for a moment1 ,i should be one of the most miserable men in this hall to-night4 ,my feelings are those of a sinful corrupt nature4 ,i am just to believe what ,god tells me in spite of my feelings4 ,faith is the evidence of things not seen3 ,i might add1 the evidence of things not felt4 ,mr4 ,m4--,some may say that faith is the gift of ,god3 and that they must wait till ,god imparts it to them4 ,mr4 ,r4--,faith cometh by hearing4 ,the word of ,god is the medium through which faith comes to us4 ,god has given us ,christ2 and ,he has given us ,his ,spirit1 and ,his ,word3 what need is there to wait8 ,god will give faith to the man who reads ,his ,word and seeks for ,his ,spirit4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what1 then1 should they wait for8 ,mr4 ,r4--,i do not know of anything they have to wait for4 ,god says3 ,come now2 ,believe now4 ,no1 no2 there is nothing to wait for4 ,he has given us all ,he has to give3 and the sooner we take it the better4 ,mr4 ,m4--,perhaps some of them think they have too many sins to allow their coming4 ,mr4 ,r4--,the ,lord ,jesus has put away sin by the sacrifice of ,himself4 ,as far as the east is from the west1 so far hath ,he removed our transgressions from us4 ,why do we not believe him8 ,he says ,he has made an end of sins4 ,why do we not believe ,him8 ,is ,he a liar8 ,mr4 ,m4--,is unbelief a sin8 ,mr4 ,r4--,it is the root of all sin4 ,mr4 ,m4--,has a man the power to believe these things1 if he will8 ,mr4 ,r4--,when ,god gives a command1 it means that we are able by ,his grace to do it4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what do you mean by coming to ,christ8 ,mr4 ,r4--,believing in ,him4 ,if ,i were to prepare a great feast in this hall to-morrow night1 and say that any man that comes to it would have a grand feast and a five-pound note besides1 there would not be any question as to what coming meant4 ,god has prepared a great feast4 ,he has sent ,his messengers to invite all to come2 and there is nothing to pay4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what is the first step4 ,mr4 ,r4--,to believe4 ,mr4 ,m4--,believe what8 ,mr4 ,r4--,god's invitation2 ,god's promise2 ,god's provision4 ,let us believe the faithfulness of ,him who calls us4 ,does ,god intend to mock us1 and make game of us8 ,if ,he did so to one man1 it would hush all the harps in heaven4 ,mr4 ,m4--,suppose the people do come1 and that they fall into sin tomorrow8 ,mr4 ,r4--,let them come back again4 ,god says we are to forgive till seventy times seven4 ,do you think the great ,god will do less than ,he commands us to do8 ,mr4 ,m4--,if they truly come1 will they have the desire to do the things they used to do before8 ,mr4 ,r4--,when a man really receives ,christ into his heart1 he experiences the expulsive power of a new affection4 ,the devil may tempt him to sin2 but sin has lost its attraction4 ,a man finds out that it does not pay to grieve ,god's ,holy ,spirit4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what would you advise your converts to do8 ,mr4 ,r4--,when you were little babes1 if you had had no milk1 no clothing1 and no rest1 you would not have lived very long4 ,you are now the result of your fathers' and mothers' care4 ,when a man is born in the family of ,god he has life2 but he needs food4 ,man doth not live by bread alone4 ,if you do not feed upon ,god's promises you will be of no use in ,god's service3 it will be well for you if your life does not die out altogether before long4 ,then you need exercise4 ,if you only take food1 and do no work1 you will soon suffer from what ,i may call spiritual apoplexy4 ,when you get hold of a promise1 go and tell it to others4 ,the best way for me to get help for myself is by trying to help others4 ,there is one great promise that young disciples should never forget3 ,he that watereth shall be watered also himself4 ,mr4 ,m4--,how are they to begin8 ,mr4 ,r4--,i believe there are some rich ladies and rich gentlemen on the platform4 ,when such persons are brought to the ,lord1 they are apt to be ashamed to speak about salvation to their old companions4 ,if our ,christian ladies would go amongst other ladies2 ,christian gentlemen amongst gentlemen of their own class2 and so on we should see a grand work for ,christ4 ,each of you have some friends or relations whom you can influence better than anybody else can4 ,begin with them2 and ,god will give you such a taste for work that you will not be content to stay at home3 you will go and work outside as well4 ,mr4 ,m4--,a good place to start in would be the kitchen1 would it not8 ,begin with some little kitchen meetings4 ,let some of you get fifteen or twenty mothers together2 and ask them to bring their young children with them4 ,sing some of these sweet hymns2 read a few verses of ,scripture2 get your lips opened2 and you will find that streams of salvation will be breaking out all around4 ,i always think that every convert ought to be good for a dozen others right away4 ,mr4 ,r4--,let me tell a little incident in my own experience4 ,i was once asked to go and see a great man and tell him about ,christ4 ,he did not expect me2 and if ,i had known that1 perhaps ,i should not have had the faith to go at all4 ,when ,i went he was very angry and very nearly turned me out of the house4 ,he was an old man1 and had one little daughter4 ,a few weeks afterwards he went to the ,continent1 and his daughter went with him4 ,one day when he was very ill he saw his daughter looking at him1 while the tears rolled down her cheeks4 ,my child1 he said1 what are you crying about8 ,oh1 papa1 you do not love the ,lord ,jesus ,christ2 ,i am afraid you are going to hell6 ,why do you say that8 ,do you not remember when ,mr4 ,rainsford called to see you1 you were very rude to him8 ,i never saw you so angry4 ,and he only wished to speak to you about ,jesus4 ,well1 my child1 you shall read to me about ,jesus4 ,if that man has gone to heaven--,i do not say whether he has or not--the only light he had he got from his little daughter4 ,you set to work2 and you cannot tell what may be the result1 by the blessing of ,god4 ,sons of ,god1 beloved in ,jesus ,oh1 the wondrous word of grace6 ,in ,his ,son the ,father sees us1 ,and as sons ,he gives us place4 ,blessed power now brightly beaming-- ,on our ,god we soon shall gaze2 ,and in light celestial gleaming ,we shall see our ,saviour's face4 ,by the power of grace transforming ,we shall then ,his image bear2 ,christ ,his promised word performing1 ,we shall then ,his glory share4 ,el ,nathan ,,ii4--,,mr4 ,,moody ,,and ,,rev4 ,,marcus ,,rainsford4 ,,how ,,to ,,become ,a ,,christian4 ,,mr4 ,,moody4--,mr4 ,rainsford1 how can one make room in their heart for ,christ8 ,rev4 ,m4 ,rainsford4--,first1 do we really want ,christ to be in our hearts8 ,if we do1 the best thing will be to ask ,him to come and make room for ,himself4 ,he will surely come and do so4 ,i can do all things through ,christ which strengtheneth me4 ,without ,me ye can do nothing4 ,mr4 ,m4--,will ,christ crowd out the world if ,he comes in8 ,mr4 ,r4--,he spake a parable to that effect4 ,when a strong man armed keepeth his palace the poor sinner's heart1 his goods are in peace4 ,but when a stronger than he shall come upon him and overcome him1 he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted unbelief1 false views of ,god1 worldliness1 and love of sin1 and divideth his spoils4 ,the devil keeps the heart1 because ,christ desires it for ,his throne--until ,christ drives ,him out4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what is the meaning of the promise8--,him that cometh unto ,me ,i will in no wise cast out4 ,mr4 ,r4--,i think we often put the emphasis upon the wrong word4 ,people are troubled about how they are going to come1 when they should put the emphasis on ,him to whom they are coming4 ,him that cometh unto ,me ,i will in no wise cast out3 no matter how he may come4 ,i remember hearing this incident at an after-meeting4 ,a gentleman was speaking to an anxious inquirer1 telling him to come to ,christ1 to trust in ,christ2 but the man seemed to get no comfort4 ,he said that was just where he found his difficulty4 ,by and by1 another friend came and spoke to the anxious one4 ,all he said was3 ,come to ,,christ2 trust in ,,christ4 ,the man saw it in a minute4 ,he went and told the other gentleman1 ,i see the way of salvation now4 ,tell me1 said he1 what did that man say to you8 ,well1 he told me to trust in ,christ4 ,that is what ,i told you4 ,nay1 you bade me trust in ,christ1 and come to ,christ2 he bade me trust in ,christ1 and come to ,christ4 ,that made all the difference4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what does ,christ mean by the words in no wise8 ,mr4 ,r4--,it means that if the sins of all sinners on earth and all the devils in hell were upon your soul1 ,he will not refuse you4 ,not even in the range of ,god's omniscience is there a reason why ,christ will refuse any poor sinner who comes to ,him for pardon4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what is the salvation ,he comes to proclaim and to bestow8 ,mr4 ,r4--,to deliver us from the power of darkness and the bottomless pit1 and set us upon the throne of glory4 ,it is salvation from death and hell1 and curse and ruin4 ,but that is only the half of it4 ,it is salvation to ,god1 and light1 and glory1 and honor1 and immortality2 and from earth to heaven4 ,mr4 ,m4--,if the friends here do not come and get this salvation1 what will be the true reason8 ,mr4 ,r4--,either they are fond of some sin which they do not intend to give up1 or they do not believe they are in a lost condition1 and under the curse of ,god1 and therefore do not feel their need of ,him who came to seek and to save that which was lost4 ,or they do not believe ,god's promises4 ,i have sometimes asked a man1 ,good friend1 are you saved6 ,well1 no1 ,i am not saved4 ,are you lost8 ,oh1 ,god forbid6 ,i am not lost4 ,where are you1 then1 if you are neither saved nor lost8 ,may ,god wake us up to the fact that we are all in one state or the other6 ,mr4 ,m4--,what if any of them should fall into sin after they have come to ,christ8 ,mr4 ,r4--,god has provided for the sins of ,his people1 committed after they come to ,christ1 as surely as for their sins committed before they came to ,him4 ,christ ever liveth to make intercession for all that come unto ,god by ,him4 ,if we say that we have no sin we deceive ourselves1 and the truth is not in us4 ,if we confess our sins1 ,he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins1 and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness4 4 4 4 4 ,for1 if any man sin1 we have an ,advocate with the ,father1 ,jesus ,christ the righteous4 ,and ,he is the propitiation for our sins4 ,he will take care of our sinful1 tried and tempted selves1 if we trust ourselves to ,him4 ,mr4 ,m4--,is it not said that if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth1 there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins8 ,mr4 ,r4--,yes4 ,paul wrote it in his ,epistle to the ,hebrews4 ,some of them were trifling with the blood of ,christ1 reverting to the types and shadows of the ,levitical ,law1 and trusting to a fulfilled ritual for salvation4 ,he is not referring to ordinary acts of sin4 ,by sinning willfully he means1 as he explains it1 a treading under foot the ,son of ,god1 and a total and final apostatizing from ,christ4 ,those who reject or neglect ,him will find no other sacrifice for sin remaining4 ,before ,christ came the ,jewish ceremonies were shadows of the good things to come2 but ,christ was the substance of them4 ,but now that he has come to put away sin by the sacrifice of ,himself1 there is no other sacrifice for sin remaining for those who reject ,him4 ,god will send no other ,saviour1 and no further atonement2 no second fountain shall be opened for sin and uncleanness4 ,there remains1 therefore1 nothing for the rejector of salvation by ,christ1 but a fearful looking-for of judgment4 ,mr4 ,m4--,there are some who say they do not know that they have the right kind of faith4 ,mr4 ,r4--,god does not ask us if we have the right kind of faith4 ,he tells us the right thing to believe1 and the right faith is to believe the right thing1 even what ,god has told us and promised us4 ,if ,i told you1 ,mr4 ,moody1 that ,i had found a hymn-book last night you would believe me1 would you not8 7,mr4 ,moody3 ,yes47 ,suppose ,i said it was the valuable one you lost the other night1 you would believe me also just the same4 ,there is no difference in the kind of faith2 the difference is in the thing believed4 ,when the ,son of ,god tells me that ,he died for sinners1 that is a fact for my faith to lay hold of3 the faith itself is not some thing to be considered4 ,i do not look at my hand1 when ,i take a gift1 and wonder what sort of a hand it is4 ,i look at the gift4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what about those people who say their hearts are so hard1 and they have no love to ,christ8 ,mr4 ,r4--,of course they are hard and cold4 ,no man loves ,christ till he believes that ,christ loves him4 ,we love ,him1 because ,he first loved us4 ,it is the love of ,god shed abroad in our hearts by the ,holy ,ghost that makes the change4 ,mr4 ,m4--,paul said he was crucified with ,christ4 what did he mean8 ,mr4 ,r4--,oh1 that is a grand text6 ,thank ,god ,i have been crucified with ,christ4 ,the ,cross of ,christ represents the death due to the sinner who had broken ,god's laws4 ,when ,christ was crucified every member of ,his body was crucified3 but every believer that was1 or is1 or shall be1 is a member of ,christ's body1 of ,his flesh1 and of ,his bones4 ,again1 we read3 ,whether one member suffer1 all the members suffer with it2 or one member be honored1 all the members rejoice with it3 now ye are the body of ,christ1 and members in particular4 ,so when ,christ was crucified for sin1 ,i was also crucified in ,him2 and now ,i am dead and gone as far as my old self is concerned4 ,i have already suffered for sin in ,him4 ,yes2 ,i am dead and buried with ,christ4 ,that is the grand truth that ,paul laid hold upon4 ,i am stone dead as a sinner in the sight of ,god4 ,as it is written1 ,i am become dead to the law by the body of ,christ1 that ,i might be married to another1 even to ,him who is raised from the dead1 that ,i should bring forth fruit unto ,god4 ,i am crucified with ,christ2 nevertheless ,i live2 yet not ,i1 but ,christ liveth in me2 and ,god ,himself commands me so to regard my standing before ,him as ,his believing child4 ,in that ,christ died1 ,he died1 unto sin once3 but in that ,he liveth1 ,he liveth unto ,god4 ,likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin1 but alive unto ,god through ,jesus ,christ our ,lord4 ,mr4 ,m4--,should not a man repent a good deal before he comes to ,christ8 ,mr4 ,r4--,repent a good deal6 ,i do not think any man repents in the true sense of the word till he loves ,christ and hates sin4 ,there are many false repentances in the ,bible4 ,we are told that ,pharaoh repented when the judgment of ,god came upon him1 and he said1 ,i have sinned2 but as soon as the judgment passed away1 he went back to his sin4 ,we read that ,balaam said3 ,i have sinned4 ,yet he loved the wages of unrighteousness4 ,when ,saul lost his kingdom he repented2 ,i have sinned1 he said4 ,when ,judas ,iscariot found that he had made a great mistake1 he said3 ,i have sinned1 in that ,i have betrayed innocent blood2 yet he went to his own place4 ,i would not give much for these repentances2 ,i would rather have ,peter's repentance3 when ,christ looked upon ,his fallen saint it broke ,his heart1 and he went out and wept bitterly4 ,or the repentance of the ,prodigal1 when his father's arms were around his neck1 and his kisses on his cheek1 and he said1 ,father1 ,i have sinned against heaven and before thee1 and am no more worthy to be called thy son4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what is your title to heaven8 ,mr4 ,r4--,the ,person1 the ,life1 ,death1 and ,righteousness1 of the ,god-man1 the ,son of ,god1 my ,substitute1 and my ,saviour4 ,mr4 ,m4--,how do you obtain that8 ,mr4 ,r4--,by receiving ,him4 ,as many as received ,him1 to them gave ,he authority to become the sons of ,god1 even to them that believed on ,his name4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what is your meetness for heaven8 ,mr4 ,r4--,the ,holy ,ghost dwelling in my heart is my fitness for heaven4 ,i have only to get there2 and ,i have1 by this great gift1 all tastes1 desires1 and faculties1 for it3 ,i have the eyes to contemplate it3 ,i have the ears for heaven's music3 and ,i can speak the language of the country4 ,the ,holy ,ghost in me is my fitness and qualification for the splendid inheritance for which the ,son of ,god has redeemed me4 ,mr4 ,m4--,would you make a distinction between ,christ's work for us and the ,spirit's work in us8 ,mr4 ,r4--,christ's work for me is the payment of my debt2 the giving me a place in my ,father's home1 the place of sonship in my ,father's family4 ,the ,holy ,spirit's work in me is to make me fit for ,his company4 ,mr4 ,m4--,you distinguish1 then1 between the work of the ,father1 the work of the ,son1 and the work of the ,holy ,ghost4 ,mr4 ,r4--,thanks be to ,god1 ,i have them all1 and ,i want them all--,father1 ,son1 and ,holy ,ghost4 ,i read that my ,heavenly ,father took my sins and laid them on ,christ2 ,the ,lord hath laid on ,him the iniquity of us all4 ,no one else had a right to touch them4 ,then ,i want the ,son1 who ,his own self bare my sins in ,his own body on a tree4 ,and ,i want the ,holy ,ghost4 ,i should know nothing about this great salvation1 and care nothing for it1 if the ,holy ,ghost had not come and told me the story1 and given me grace to believe it4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what is meant when we are told that ,christ saves to the uttermost8 ,mr4 ,r4--,that is another grand truth4 ,some people are troubled by the thought that they will not be able to hold out if they come to ,christ4 ,there are so many crooked ways1 and pitfalls1 and snares in the world2 there is the power of the flesh1 and the snare of the devil4 ,so they fear they will never get home4 ,the idea of the passage is this4 ,suppose you are on the top of some splendid mountain1 very high up4 ,you look away to where the sun sets1 and you see many a river1 and many a country1 and many a barren waste between4 ,christ is able to save you through and over them all1 out and out1 and beyond to the uttermost4 ,mr4 ,m4--,suppose a man came in here just out of prison3 all his life he has been falling1 falling1 till he has become discouraged4 ,can ,christ save him all at once8 ,mr4 ,r4--,it is just as easy for ,christ to save a man with the weight of ten thousand sins upon him and all his chains around him1 as to save a man with one sin4 ,if a man has offended in one point1 the ,scripture says he is guilty of all4 ,mr4 ,m4--,if a man is forgiven1 will he go out and do the same thing to-morrow8 ,mr4 ,r4--,well1 ,i hope not4 ,all ,i can say is that if we do1 we shall smart for it4 ,i have done many a thing since the ,lord revealed ,himself to my soul that ,i should not have done--,i have gone backward and downward2 but ,i have always found that it does not pay when ,i do anything that grieves my ,heavenly ,father4 ,i think ,he sometimes allows us to taste the bitterness of what it is to depart from ,him4 ,and this is one of the many ways by which ,he keeps us from falling4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what do you consider to be the great sin of sins8 ,mr4 ,r4--,the ,word of ,god tells us that there is only one sin of which ,god alone can convince us4 ,if ,i cut a man's throat or if ,i steal1 it does not need ,god to convince me that that is a sin4 ,but it takes the power of the ,holy ,ghost to convince me that not to receive ,christ1 not to love ,christ1 not to believe in ,christ1 is the sin of sins1 the root of sins4 ,christ says1 ,when the ,spirit is come1 ,he will convince the world of sin1 because they believe not on ,me4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what do you mean by the ,word of ,god8 ,mr4 ,r4--,the ,son of ,god is the ,word of ,god incarnate3 the ,bible is the ,word of ,god written4 ,the one is the ,word of ,god in my nature3 the other is the ,word of ,god in my language4 ,mr4 ,m4--,if a man receives the word of ,god into his heart1 what benefit is it to him1 right here to-night8 ,mr4 ,r4--,the ,father and the ,son will make their abode with him2 and he will be the temple of the ,holy ,ghost4 ,where ,he goes the whole ,trinity goes2 and all the promises are his4 ,man doth not live by bread alone2 but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of ,god4 ,mr4 ,m4--,who is it that judges a man to be unworthy of eternal life8 ,mr4 ,r4--,himself66 ,there is a verse in ,acts xiii that is worth remembering3 ,seeing ye put it the ,word of ,god from you1 and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life1 lo1 we turn to the ,gentiles4 ,god does not judge us unworthy4 ,he has given ,his ,son for our salvation4 ,when a man puts away the ,word of ,god from him and refuses to receive ,christ into his heart1 he judges himself unworthy of salvation4 ,mr4 ,m4--,i understand1 then1 that if a man rejects ,christ to-night1 he passes judgment on himself as unworthy of eternal life8 ,mr4 ,r4--,he is judging himself unworthy1 while ,god does not so consider him4 ,god says you are welcome to eternal life4 ,mr4 ,m4--,if any one here wants to please ,god to-night1 how can he do it8 ,mr4 ,r4--,god delights in mercy4 ,come to ,god and claim ,his mercy in ,christ2 and you will delight ,his heart4 ,mr4 ,m4--,suppose a man say he is not elected8 ,mr4 ,r4--,do you remember the story of the woman of ,canaan8 ,poor soul2 she had come a long journey4 ,she asked the ,lord to have mercy on her afflicted child4 ,he wanted to try her faith1 and ,he said3 ,i am not sent but to the lost sheep of the house of ,israel4 ,that looked as if ,he ,himself told her that she was not one of the elect4 ,but she came and worshipped ,him1 saying1 ,lord1 help me6 and ,he helped her there and then4 ,no2 there is no election separating between the sinner and ,christ4 ,mr4 ,m4--,say that again4 ,mr4 ,r4--,there is no election separating between the sinner and christ4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what is there between the sinner and ,christ8 ,mr4 ,r4--,mercy66 ,mercy66 ,mr4 ,m4--,that brings me near to ,christ4 ,mr4 ,r4--,so near that we cannot be nearer4 ,but we must claim it4 ,in ,john we get ,god's teaching about election4 ,this is the ,father's will which hath sent ,me1 that of all which ,he hath given ,me ,i should lose nothing2 but should raise it up again at the last day4 ,he will do his work1 you may depend upon it4 ,then in the next verse we read3 ,and this is the will of ,him that sent ,me1 that every one which seeth the ,son1 and believeth on ,him1 may have everlasting life3 and ,i will raise him up at the last day4 ,that is the part ,i am to take3 and when ,i have done so ,i shall know the ,father's will concerning me4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what do you mean by the ,new ,birth8 ,mr4 ,r4--,i judge it by what ,i know of the ,old ,birth4 ,i was born of human parents into the human family2 so ,i belong to ,adam's race by nature and by generation1 and ,i inherit ,adam's sin and curse accordingly4 ,the new birth is from my union by faith with the second ,adam2 but this is by grace1 not nature3 and when ,i receive the ,lord ,jesus ,christ ,i am born of ,god--not by generation1 but by regeneration4 ,as ,i am united to the first ,adam by nature and generation1 so ,i am united by faith through grace and regeneration to the second ,adam1 and inherit all ,his fullness accordingly4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what is the meaning of being saved by the ,blood8 ,mr4 ,r4--,a gentleman asked me that in the inquiry-room2 ,what do you mean by the shed ,blood8 ,it is the poured-out life of the ,son of ,god forfeited as the atonement for sinners' sins4 ,mr4 ,m4--,is it available now8 ,mr4 ,r4--,yes2 as much as ever it was4 ,mr4 ,m4--,you mean it is just as powerful to-day as it was eighteen hundred years ago when ,he shed it8 ,mr4 ,r4--,if the blood of ,abel cried out for vengeance against his slayer1 how much more does the blood of ,christ cry out for pardon for all who plead it6 ,it cleanseth 7present tense7 from all sin4 ,mr4 ,m4--,how do you get faith8 ,mr4 ,r4--,by hearing ,god's ,word4 ,faith cometh by hearing2 and hearing by the ,word of ,god4 ,mr4 ,m4--,how do you get the ,holy ,ghost8 ,mr4 ,r4--,in the same way as you get faith4 ,the ,holy ,ghost uses the ,word as the chariot by which ,he enters the believer's soul4 ,the ,gospel is called the ministration of the ,spirit4 ,mr4 ,m4--,is the ,word of ,god addressed to all here8 ,mr4 ,r4--,he that hath an ear1 let him hear what the ,spirit saith to the ,churches 7,rev4 iii #bb74 ,mr4 ,m4--,what is the ,gospel8 ,mr4 ,r4--,good tidings of great joy1 which shall be to all people4 ,if our ,gospel1 proclaiming life1 pardon1 and peace1 is not as applicable for salvation to the vilest harlot here as to the greatest saint in ,london1 it is not ,christ's ,gospel we preach4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what reason does the ,scripture give tor the ,gospel being hid to some8 ,mr4 ,r4--,it is hid to them that are lost2 in whom the ,god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not1 lest the light of the glorious ,gospel of ,christ1 who is the image of ,god1 should shine into them4 ,may ,god open all our eyes1 and take away the veil of unbelief with which the devil may be blinding any of us6 ,mr4 ,m4--,are there not many who give an intellectual assent to all these things2 and who yet have no power1 and no divine life8 ,mr4 ,r4--,an intellectual assent is not faith4 ,i have never found anyone who really believed ,god's ,word who did not get power in believing it4 ,people may assent to it2 but ,i do not admit that that is believing it4 ,i do not think there is any man or woman here who really believes the ,gospel of the grace of ,god1 who has not been taught it by the ,holy ,ghost4 ,i could easily cross-examine any one of those intellectual believers who imagines he believes ,god1 but really does not2 and he would break down in a few minutes4 ,mr4 ,m4--,for whom1 then1 did ,christ die8 ,mr4 ,r4--,for the ungodly4 ,mr4 ,m4--,why is salvation obtained by faith8 ,mr4 ,r4--,that it might be by grace4 ,for this cause it is of faith1 that it may be according to grace8 ,mr4 ,m4--,how may a man know if he has eternal life8 ,mr4 ,r4--,by not treating ,god as if ,he were a liar1 when ,he tells us ,he has given us eternal life in ,his ,son4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what is the means by which the ,new ,birth we were speaking of is effected8 ,mr4 ,r4--,of ,his own will begat ,he us with the word of truth4 ,being born again1 not of corruptible seed1 but of incorruptible1 by the ,word of ,god 4 4 4 4 and this is the ,word1 which by the ,gospel is preached unto you4 ,oh1 the wondrous love of ,jesus ,to redeem us with ,his blood6 ,through ,his all-atoning merit1 ,he has brought us near to ,god3 ,for the boundless grace that saves us ,we ,his name will magnify2 ,he is coming in ,his glory1 ,we shall see ,him by and by6 ,oh1 the wondrous love of ,jesus ,to redeem our souls from death6 ,we will thank ,him1 we will praise ,him1 ,while ,his mercy lends us breath3 ,we are waiting--only waiting-- ,till ,he comes our souls to bear ,to the ,home beyond the shadows1 ,in ,his ,kingdom over there6 ,f4 ,j4 ,crosby ,,iii4--,,mr4 ,,moody ,,and ,,mr4 ,,radstock4 ,,what ,,it ,,is ,,to ,,be ,,converted4 ,,mr4 ,,moody3 ,christ says1 ,except ye be converted1 and become as little children1 ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven4 ,what is it to be converted8 ,mr4 ,radstock3 ,to be converted is to turn to ,god1 who is the only one that can save4 ,we cannot save ourselves even by our religion4 ,therefore1 in order to salvation we must turn to ,god1 who alone has the grace1 the wisdom1 and the power to save4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what is it to be born of the ,spirit8 ,mr4 ,r4--,man1 by nature1 cannot enter into the thoughts of ,god4 ,he cannot hold communion with ,god until he has a new nature4 ,the natural man receiveth not the things of the ,spirit of ,god3 he has no capacity until he has the new life which ,god will give him by the power of the ,holy ,ghost4 ,mr4 ,m4--,can he get that to-day if he repents8 ,mr4 ,r4--,yes4 ,repentance means a change of mind--a turning away from his own thoughts to hear the voice and the message of ,god4 ,if we listen to the voice of ,god and confess our sins1 ,god is faithful and just to forgive us our sins4 ,mr4 ,m4--,to whom are we to confess our sins8 ,mr4 ,r4--,when the light of ,god comes in1 we see that we are guilty before him2 then we are constrained to go and lay our case before ,him4 ,if we confess our sins1 ,he is faithful and just to forgive us4 ,mr4 ,m4--,there is a passage that says the ,lord ,jesus ,christ bear our sins4 ,in what sense did ,he bear our sins4 ,mr4 ,r4--,the ,lord ,jesus ,christ had really laid to ,his charge sins which ,he had never committed4 ,he was punished as if ,he had been the sinner4 ,therefore on the cross ,he cried out1 ,my ,god1 my ,god1 why hast ,thou forsaken me8 ,god was dealing with ,jesus as if ,he had really been the guilty one4 ,mr4 ,m4--,do we get any help by believing that8 ,mr4 ,r4--,when ,i believe ,god's testimony1 ,god's witness about ,jesus1 ,i then can trust myself to ,god1 ,giving myself to ,god1 ,god becomes my ,saviour4 ,mr4 ,m4--,have these friends the power to believe8 ,mr4 ,r4--,they are commanded to believe4 ,they can believe it just as well as they can believe any other fact1 if they only listen to ,god's voice4 ,but they must get rid of their own thoughts1 and listen to ,god3 ,hearing ,his voice they will believe4 ,faith cometh by hearing3 and hearing by the ,word of ,god4 ,mr4 ,m4--,all the sinner has to do is to repose in the promises of ,god8 ,mr4 ,r4--,simply to trust ,himself to ,god4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what would you say to a man who says he has tried a good many times and failed2 and who has become discouraged8 ,mr4 ,r4--,that man has probably made a good many resolutions1 hoping that he would gradually make himself a ,christian by going through this or that process1 or by doing this or that thing4 ,of course he failed1 because he tried to make himself a ,christian4 ,instead of trying to save himself1 let him trust in ,god1 who has pledged ,his word that every one who believes on the ,lord ,jesus ,christ has at that moment everlasting life4 ,mr4 ,m4--,should a man not break off from some of his sins before he comes to ,god8 ,suppose he swears or has a bad temper1 should he not get a little control over his temper1 or stop swearing1 before he comes to ,christ8 ,mr4 ,r4--,god knows that a man's nature is wrong3 therefore ,he has promised to give a man a new nature4 ,we must therefore go to ,god1 just as a man goes to a physician1 because he needs to be cured of some disease4 ,mr4 ,m4--,can a drunkard or a blasphemer be saved all at once8 ,mr4 ,r4--,paul says3 ,to him that worketh not1 but believeth on ,him that justifieth the ungodly bad people1 lost people1 ruined people--his faith is counted for righteousness4 ,when he believes ,god1 ,god becomes his ,saviour4 ,god is the friend of sinners4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what is it to believe ,god8 ,mr4 ,r4--,to take ,him at ,his word4 ,mr4 ,m4--,do you not think there are a good many here who believe that ,jesus ,christ is the ,saviour of the world2 and yet they are not saved8 ,mr4 ,r4--,no doubt2 because they have not believed for themselves4 ,a man at the time of the ,deluge1 for instance1 might have said1 ,yes1 ,i believe it is a very good ark indeed2 and that it will save those who get into it4 ,but it does not follow that he got into it himself4 ,the ark only saved those who went into it4 ,so1 when a man trusts in ,jesus ,christ for himself1 ,jesus becomes his personal and eternal ,saviour4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what if he should fall into sin after he has believed in ,christ8 ,mr4 ,r4--,these things write ,i unto you that ye sin not1 says ,john2 and if any man sin1 we have an ,advocate with the ,father4 ,the ,good ,physician will not give up ,his case because of the disease2 ,he will deal with it4 ,the ,good ,shepherd will not turn ,his poor wandering sheep away2 ,he will go after it1 and bring it back4 ,he has promised that ,he will save ,his people from their sins4 ,mr4 ,m4--,is salvation within the reach of every man here tonight8 ,mr4 ,r4--,jesus said1 ,god so loved the world that ,he gave his only begotten ,son1 that whosoever believeth in ,him should not perish1 but have everlasting life4 ,mr4 ,m4--,but some say they do not feel that2 they do not realize it4 ,mr4 ,r4--,when they take ,god at ,his word1 and cast themselves upon ,him1 whether they feel it or not--when they confess ,jesus ,christ as their ,lord--the ,holy ,ghost will come as a power to make them realize it4 ,for instance1 a man at the time of the ,deluge might have stood outside the ark1 and said1 ,i cannot realize how this ark will lift me up above the waters4 ,but if he were inside when the flood came he would realize it4 ,the sinner must believe first1 and have his experience afterwards4 ,a man is told that a certain train will take him to ,edinburgh4 ,he has never been there3 he does not understand about this particular train2 and he cannot realize that it will take him there4 ,but he knows that he may trust the friend who told him2 so he gets into the train4 ,then he realizes that he is in the train2 by and by he will be able to realize that he is in ,edinburgh4 ,mr4 ,m4--,would you advise people to come to ,god as they are1 with their unfeeling1 treacherous1 hard hearts--with any kind of heart8 ,mr4 ,r4--,god has provided this salvation for lost sinners--those who are thoroughly bad and corrupt4 ,it is for such that ,god has shown ,his salvation1 ,his love1 ,his grace4 ,mr4 ,m4--,what would you say to any one who thinks he has no power to believe8 ,mr4 ,r4--,he has the power to believe4 ,probably he is trying to believe something about himself2 to feel something about himself instead of giving credit to ,god--,he is not asked to realize this or that about himself1 but to believe the faithful ,god4 ,mr4 ,m4--,some say they have no power to overcome a besetting sin8 ,mr4 ,r4--,jesus came proclaiming liberty to the captives4 ,as we read in the beautiful words of the ,church of ,england ,prayer-book3 ,though we be tied and bound by the chains of our sin1 let the pitifulness of ,thy mercy save us4 ,jesus ,christ takes the prisoners of sin and breaks off their chains4 ,mr4 ,m4--,there is something said about confessing ,christ4 ,would you advise any one who wants to become a ,christian to start right here by confessing ,christ with the mouth8 ,mr4 ,r4--,god is already on your side1 whoever you are4 ,christ is ,immanuel--,god with us and for us4 ,he is already on your side1 whether you believe it or not4 ,now it is for you to decide whether ,he shall be your ,saviour4 ,he says that if you own ,him as ,lord--who is now the one rejected by the world--,he is responsible to be your ,saviour from that moment4
