of the four narratives clearly indicates the order of events upon the several days of the ,holy ,week4 ,the devotional reading of the story is a most natural and helpful observance of the ,easter season4 ,as an aid to such observance this booklet has been prepared4 ,it is the story1 day by day1 of the last week in our ,lord's earthly life in the words of the four evangelists1 containing all that they record1 but without repetition4 ,messrs4 ,thomas ,nelson and ,sons have generously co-operated in permitting the use of the best translation4 ,originally planned for the churches of all denominations in a single community1 the booklet has proved a blessing to many thousands of ,christians4 ,may this new edition help in the fulfillment of the great purpose which the ,gospel epilogue ,,week ,,going ,,up ,,to ,,jerusalem4 ,and it came to pass when the days were well nigh come that ,jesus should be received up1 he stedfastly set his face to go to ,jerusalem4 ,and he departed from ,galilee1 and passed through the borders of ,samaria and ,galilee1 and came into the borders of ,juda beyond the ,jordan4 ,and great multitudes followed him1 and he healed them there4 ,and they were on the way1 going up to ,jerusalem2 and ,jesus was going before them3 and they were amazed2 and they that followed were afraid4 ,and he took again the twelve1 and began to tell them the things that were to happen unto them1 saying1 ,behold1 we go up to ,jerusalem2 and the ,son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests and the scribes2 and they shall condemn him to death1 and shall deliver him unto the ,gentiles2 and they shall mock him1 and shall spit upon him1 and shall scourge him1 and shall kill him2 and after three days he shall rise again4 ,thomas therefore1 who is called ,didymus1 said unto his fellow-disciples1 ,let us also go1 that we may die with him4 ,and he entered and passed through ,jericho and went on before1 going up to ,jerusalem4 ,now the passover of the ,jews was at hand3 and many went up to ,jerusalem out of the country before the passover1 to purify themselves4 ,they sought therefore for ,jesus1 and spake one with another1 as they stood in the temple1 ,what think ye8 ,that he will not come to the feast8 ,now the chief priests and the ,pharisees had given commandment1 that1 if any man knew where he was1 he should show it1 that they might take him4 ,,the ,,feast ,,at ,,bethany4 ,jesus therefore six days before the passover came to ,bethany1 where ,lazarus was1 whom ,jesus raised from the dead4 ,so they made him a supper there in the house of ,simon the leper2 and ,martha served3 but ,lazarus was one of them that sat at meat with him4 ,mary therefore took a pound of ointment of pure nard1 very precious1 and anointed the feet of ,jesus1 and wiped his feet with her hair2 and the house was filled with the odor of the ointment4 ,but ,judas ,iscariot1 one of his disciples1 that should betray him1 saith1 ,why was not this ointment sold for three hundred shillings1 and given to the poor8 ,now this he said1 not because he cared for the poor2 but because he was a thief1 and having the bag took away what was put therein4 ,jesus therefore said1 ,suffer her to keep it against the day of my burying4 ,for the poor ye have always with you2 but me ye have not always4 ,she hath done what she could2 she hath anointed my body beforehand for the burying4 ,and verily ,i say unto you1 ,wheresoever the gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world1 that also which this woman hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her4 ,the common people therefore of the ,jews learned that he was there3 and they came1 not for ,jesus' sake only1 but that they might see ,lazarus also1 whom he had raised from the dead4 ,but the chief priests took counsel that they might put ,lazarus also to death2 because that by reason of him many of the ,jews went away1 and believed on ,jesus4 ,,palm ,,sunday--,,the ,,day ,,of ,,triumph4 ,,the ,,triumphal ,,entry4 ,on the morrow when they drew nigh unto ,jerusalem1 unto ,bethphage and ,bethany1 at the mount of ,olives1 he sendeth two of his disciples1 and saith unto them1 ,go your way into the village that is over against you3 and straightway as ye enter into it1 ye shall find a colt tied1 whereon no man ever yet sat2 loose him1 and bring him4 ,and if any one say unto you1 ',why do ye this8' say ye1 ',the ,lord hath need of him2 and straightway he will send him back hither4' ,now this is come to pass1 that it might be fulfilled1 which was spoken through the prophet1 saying1 ,tell ye the daughter of ,zion1 ,behold1 thy ,king cometh unto thee1 ,meek1 and riding upon an ass1 ,and upon a colt the foal of an ass4 ,and they went away1 and found a colt tied at the door without in the open street3 and they loose him4 ,and certain of them that stood there said unto them1 ,what do ye1 loosing the colt8 ,and they said unto them even as ,jesus had said3 and they let them go4 ,and they bring the colt unto ,jesus1 and cast on him their garments2 and he sat upon him4 ,and the most part of the multitude spread their garments upon the way2 and others branches1 which they had cut from the fields4 ,and as he was drawing nigh1 even at the descent of the ,mount of ,olives1 the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise ,god with a loud voice for all the mighty works which they had seen4 ,and they that went before1 and they that followed1 cried1 ,hosanna to the ,son of ,david2 ,blessed is he that cometh in the name of the ,lord2 ,blessed is the kingdom that cometh1 the kingdom of our father ,david3 ,hosanna in the highest4 ,these things understood not his disciples at the first3 but when ,jesus was glorified1 then remembered they that these things were written of him1 and that they had done these things unto him4 ,the multitude1 therefore1 that was with him when he called ,lazarus out of the tomb1 and raised him from the dead1 bare witness4 ,for this cause also the multitude went and met him1 for that they heard that he had done this sign4 ,and some of the ,pharisees from the multitude said unto him1 ,teacher1 rebuke thy disciples4 ,and he answered and said1 ,i tell you that1 if these shall hold their peace1 the stones will cry out4 ,and when he drew nigh1 he saw the city and wept over it1 saying1 ,if thou hadst known in this day1 even thou1 the things which belong unto peace6 but now they are hid from thine eyes4 ,for the days shall come upon thee1 when thine enemies shall cast up a bank about thee1 and compass thee round1 and keep thee in on every side1 and shall dash thee to the ground1 and thy children within thee2 and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another2 because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation4 ,and when he was come into ,jerusalem1 all the city was stirred1 saying1 ,who is this8 ,and the multitude said1 ,this is the prophet1 ,jesus1 from ,nazareth of ,galilee4 ,the ,pharisees therefore said among themselves1 ,behold1 how ye prevail nothing2 lo1 the world is gone after him4 ,and he entered into ,jerusalem1 into the temple2 and when he had looked round about upon all things1 it being now eventide1 he went out unto ,bethany with the twelve4 ,,monday--,,the ,,day ,,of ,,authority4 ,,the ,,cursing ,,of ,,the ,,fig ,,tree4 ,and on the morrow1 when they were come out from ,bethany1 he hungered4 ,and seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves1 he came1 if haply he might find anything thereon3 and when he came to it1 he found nothing but leaves2 for it was not the season of figs4 ,and he answered and said unto it1 ,no man eat fruit from thee henceforward for ever4 ,and his disciples heard it4 ,,the ,,cleansing ,,of ,,the ,,temple4 ,and they come to ,jerusalem3 and he entered into the temple1 and began to cast out them that sold and them that bought in the temple1 and overthrew the tables of the money-changers1 and the seats of them that sold the doves3 and he would not suffer that any man should carry a vessel through the temple4 ,and he taught1 and said unto them1 ,is it not written1 ',my house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations'8 but ye have made it a den of robbers4 ,and the blind and the lame came to him in the temple2 and he healed them4 ,but when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did1 and the children that were crying in the temple and saying1 ,hosanna to the son of ,david3 they were moved with indignation1 and said unto him1 ,hearest thou what these are saying8 ,and ,jesus saith unto them1 ,yea3 did ye never read1 ',out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise'8 ,and the chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people sought to destroy him3 and they could not find what they might do2 for the people all hung upon him1 listening4 ,and he left them1 and went forth out of the city to ,bethany1 and lodged there4 ,,tuesday--,,the ,,day ,,of ,,controversy4 ,,the ,,lesson ,,from ,,the ,,withered ,,fig ,,tree4 ,and as they passed by in the morning1 they saw the fig tree withered away from the roots4 ,and ,peter calling to remembrance saith unto him1 ,rabbi1 behold the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away4 ,and ,jesus answering saith unto them1 ,have faith in ,god4 ,verily ,i say unto you1 ,whosoever shall say unto this mountain1 ',be thou taken up and cast into the sea'2 and shall not doubt in his heart1 but shall believe that what he saith cometh to pass2 he shall have it4 ,therefore ,i say unto you1 ,all things whatsoever ye pray and ask for1 believe that ye receive them1 and ye shall have them4 ,and whensoever ye stand praying1 forgive1 if ye have aught against any one2 that your ,father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses4 ,,the ,,challenge ,,of ,,christ',s ,,authority4 ,and they came again to ,jerusalem4 ,and all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple to hear him4 ,and as he was teaching the people in the temple1 and preaching the gospel1 there came upon him the chief priests and the scribes with the elders2 and they spake1 saying unto him1 ,tell us3 ,by what authority doest thou these things8 or who is he that gave thee this authority8 ,and ,jesus answered1 and said unto them1 ,i also will ask you one question1 which if ye tell me1 ,i likewise will tell you by what authority ,i do these things4 ,the baptism of ,john1 whence was it8 from heaven or from men8 ,and they reasoned with themselves1 saying1 ,if we shall say1 ',from heaven'2 he will say unto us1 ',why did ye not believe him8' ,but if we shall say1 ',from men'2 all the people will stone us3 for they are persuaded that ,john was a prophet4 ,and they answered ,jesus1 and said1 ,we know not4 ,and ,jesus said unto them1 ,neither tell ,i you by what authority ,i do these things4 ,,the ,,two ,,sons4 ,but what think ye8 ,a man had two sons2 and he came to the first1 and said1 ',son1 go work to-day in the vineyard4' ,and he answered and said1 ',i will not'3 but afterward he repented himself1 and went4 ,and he came to the second1 and said likewise4 ,and he answered and said1 ',i go1 sir'3 and went not4 ,which of the two did the will of his father8 ,they say1 ,the first4 ,jesus saith unto them1 ,verily ,i say unto you1 that the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of ,god before you4 ,for ,john came unto you in the way of righteousness1 and ye believed him not2 but the publicans and the harlots believed him2 and ye1 when ye saw it1 did not even repent yourselves afterward that ye might believe him4 ,,the ,,wicked ,,husbandmen4 ,hear another parable3 ,there was a man who was a householder1 who planted a vineyard1 and set a hedge about it1 and digged a winepress in it1 and built a tower1 and let it out to husbandmen1 and went into another country4 ,and when the season of the fruits drew near1 he sent his servants to the husbandmen to receive his fruits4 ,and the husbandmen took his servants1 and beat one1 and killed another1 and stoned another4 ,again1 he sent other servants more than the first2 and they did unto them in like manner4 ,but afterward he sent unto them his son1 saying1 ',they will reverence my son4' ,but the husbandmen1 when they saw the son1 said among themselves1 ',this is the heir2 come1 let us kill him1 and take his inheritance4' ,and they took him1 and cast him forth out of the vineyard1 and killed him4 ,when therefore the lord of the vineyard shall come1 what will he do unto those husbandmen8 ,they say unto him1 ,he will miserably destroy those miserable men1 and will let out the vineyard unto other husbandmen1 who shall render him the fruits in their seasons4 ,jesus saith unto them1 ,did ye never read in the scriptures1 ',the stone which the builders rejected1 ,the same was made the head of the corner2 ,this was from the ,lord1 ,and it is marvellous in our eyes'8 ,therefore say ,i unto you1 ,the kingdom of ,god shall be taken away from you1 and shall be given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof4 ,and he that falleth on this stone shall be broken to pieces2 but on whomsoever it shall fall1 it will scatter him as dust4 ,and when the chief priests and the ,pharisees heard his parables1 they perceived that he spake of them4 ,and when they sought to lay hold on him1 they feared the multitudes1 because they took him for a prophet4 ,,the ,,marriage ,,of ,,the ,,king',s ,,son4 ,and ,jesus answered and spake again in parables unto them1 saying1 ,the kingdom of heaven is likened unto a certain king1 who made a marriage feast for his son1 and sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the marriage feast3 and they would not come4 ,again he sent forth other servants1 saying1 ,tell them that are bidden1 ',behold1 ,i have made ready my dinner2 my oxen and my fatlings are killed1 and all things are ready2 come to the marriage feast4' ,but they made light of it1 and went their ways1 one to his own farm1 another to his merchandise2 and the rest laid hold on his servants1 and treated them shamefully1 and killed them4 ,but the king was wroth2 and he sent his armies1 and destroyed those murderers1 and burned their city4 ,then saith he to his servants1 ',the wedding is ready1 but they that were bidden were not worthy4 ,go ye therefore unto the partings of the highways1 and as many as ye shall find1 bid to the marriage feast4' ,and those servants went out into the highways1 and gathered together all as many as they found1 both bad and good2 and the wedding was filled with guests4 ,but when the king came in to behold the guests1 he saw there a man who had not on a wedding-garment3 and he saith unto him1 ',friend1 how camest thou in hither not having a wedding-garment8' ,and he was speechless4 ,then the king said to the servants1 ',bind him hand and foot and cast him out into the outer darkness'2 there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth4 ,for many are called1 but few chosen4 ,,tribute ,,to ,c,,sar4 ,then went the ,pharisees1 and took counsel how they might ensnare him in his talk so as to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor4 ,and they send to him their disciples1 with the ,herodians1 saying1 ,teacher1 we know that thou art true1 and teachest the way of ,god in truth1 and carest not for any one3 for thou regardest not the person of men4 ,tell us therefore1 ,what thinkest thou8 ,is it lawful to give tribute unto ,csar1 or not8 ,but ,jesus perceived their craftiness1 and said1 ,why make ye trial of me1 ye hypocrites8 ,show me the tribute money4 ,and they brought unto him a denarius4 ,and he saith unto them1 ,whose is this image and superscription8 ,they say unto him1 ,csar's4 ,then he saith unto them1 ,render therefore unto ,csar the things that are ,csar's2 and unto ,god the things that are ,god's4 ,and when they heard it1 they marvelled1 and left him1 and went away4 ,,the ,,question ,,of ,,the ,,resurrection4 ,and there came to him certain of the ,sadducees1 they that say that there is no resurrection2 and they asked him1 saying1 ,teacher1 ,moses wrote unto us1 that if a man's brother die1 having a wife1 and he be childless1 his brother should take the wife1 and raise up seed unto his brother4 ,there were therefore seven brethren3 and the first took a wife1 and died childless2 and the second2 and the third took her2 and likewise the seven also left no children1 and died4 ,afterward the woman also died4 ,in the resurrection therefore whose wife of them shall she be8 for the seven had her to wife4 ,and ,jesus said unto them1 ,ye do err1 not knowing the scriptures1 nor the power of ,god4 ,the sons of this world marry1 and are given in marriage2 but they that are accounted worthy to attain to that world1 and the resurrection from the dead1 neither marry1 nor are given in marriage3 for neither can they die any more3 for they are equal unto the angels2 and are sons of ,god1 being sons of the resurrection4 ,but that the dead are raised1 even ,moses showed1 in the place concerning the ,bush1 when he calleth the ,lord the ,god of ,abraham1 and the ,god of ,isaac1 and the ,god of ,jacob4 ,now he is not the ,god of the dead1 but of the living3 for all live unto him4 ,and when the multitudes heard it1 they were astonished at his teaching4 ,,the ,,greatest ,,commandment4 ,and one of the scribes came1 and heard them questioning together1 and knowing that he had answered them well1 asked him1 ,what commandment is the first of all8 ,jesus answered1 ,the first is1 ',hear1 ,o ,israel3 ,the ,lord our ,god1 the ,lord is one3 and thou shalt love the ,lord thy ,god with all thy heart1 and with all thy soul1 and with all thy mind1 and with all thy strength4' ,the second is this1 ',thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself4' ,there is none other commandment greater than these4 ,and the scribe said unto him1 ,of a truth1 ,teacher1 thou hast well said that he is one3 and there is none other but he3 and to love him with all the heart1 and with all the understanding and with all the strength1 and to love his neighbor as himself1 is much more than all whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices4 ,and when ,jesus saw that he answered discreetly1 he said unto him1 ,thou art not far from the kingdom of ,god4 ,,the ,,unanswerable ,,question ,,of ,,jesus4 ,now while the ,pharisees were gathered together ,jesus asked them a question1 saying1 ,what think ye of the ,christ8 whose son is he8 ,they say unto him1 ,the son of ,david4 ,he saith unto them1 ,how then doth ,david in the ,spirit call him ,lord1 saying1 ',the ,lord said unto my ,lord1 ,sit thou on my right hand1 ,till ,i put thine enemies underneath thy feet8' ,if ,david then calleth him ,lord1 how is he his son8 ,and no one was able to answer him a word1 neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions4 ,and the common people heard him gladly4 ,,discourse ,,of ,,jesus ,,against ,,the ,,scribes ,,and ,,pharisees4 ,then spake ,jesus to the multitudes and to his disciples1 saying1 ,the scribes and the ,pharisees sit on ,moses' seat3 all things therefore whatsoever they bid you1 these do and observe3 but do not ye after their works2 for they say1 and do not4 ,yea1 they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne1 and lay them on men's shoulders2 but they themselves will not move them with their finger4 ,but all their works they do to be seen of men3 for they make broad their phylacteries1 and enlarge the borders of their garments1 and love the chief place at feasts1 and the chief seats in the synagogues1 and the salutations in the market-places1 and to be called of men1 ',rabbi4' ,but be not ye called ',rabbi1' for one is your teacher1 and all ye are brethren4 ,and call no man your father on the earth3 for one is your ,father1 even he who is in heaven4 ,neither be ye called masters3 for one is your master1 even the ,christ4 ,but he that is greatest among you shall be your servant4 ,and whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled3 and whosoever shall humble himself shall be exalted4 ,but woe unto you1 scribes and ,pharisees1 hypocrites6 because ye shut the kingdom of heaven against men3 for ye enter not in yourselves1 neither suffer ye them that are entering in to enter4 ,woe unto you1 scribes and ,pharisees1 hypocrites6 for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte2 and when he is become so1 ye make him twofold more a son of hell than yourselves4 ,woe unto you1 ye blind guides1 that say1 ',whosoever shall swear by the temple1 it is nothing2 but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple1 he is a debtor4' ,ye fools and blind3 for which is greater1 the gold1 or the temple that hath sanctified the gold8 ,and1 ',whosoever shall swear by the altar1 it is nothing2 but whosoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it1 he is a debtor4' ,ye blind3 for which is greater1 the gift1 or the altar that sanctifieth the gift8 ,he therefore that sweareth by the altar1 sweareth by it1 and by all things thereon4 ,and he that sweareth by the temple1 sweareth by it1 and by him that dwelleth therein4 ,and he that sweareth by the heaven1 sweareth by the throne of ,god1 and by him that sitteth thereon4 ,woe unto you1 scribes and ,pharisees1 hypocrites6 for ye tithe mint and anise and cummin1 and have left undone the weightier matters of the law1 justice1 and mercy1 and faith3 but these ye ought to have done1 and not to have left the other undone4 ,ye blind guides1 that strain out the gnat1 and swallow the camel6 ,woe unto you1 scribes and ,pharisees1 hypocrites6 for ye cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter1 but within they are full from extortion and excess4 ,thou blind ,pharisee1 cleanse first the inside of the cup and of the platter1 that the outside thereof may become clean also4 ,woe unto you1 scribes and ,pharisees1 hypocrites6 for ye are like unto whited sepulchres1 which outwardly appear beautiful1 but inwardly are full of dead men's bones1 and of all uncleanness4 ,even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men1 but inwardly ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity4 ,woe unto you1 scribes and ,pharisees1 hypocrites6 for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets1 and garnish the tombs of the righteous1 and say1 ',if we had been in the days of our fathers1 we should not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets4' ,wherefore ye witness to yourselves1 that ye are sons of them that slew the prophets4 ,fill ye up then the measure of your fathers4 ,ye serpents1 ye offspring of vipers1 how shall ye escape the judgment of hell8 ,therefore1 behold1 ,i send unto you prophets1 and wise men1 and scribes3 some of them shall ye kill and crucify2 and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues1 and persecute from city to city3 that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth1 from the blood of ,abel the righteous unto the blood of ,zachariah son of ,barachiah1 whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar4 ,verily ,i say unto you1 ,all these things shall come upon this generation4 ,o ,jerusalem1 ,jerusalem1 that killeth the prophets1 and stoneth them that are sent unto her6 how often would ,i have gathered thy children together1 even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings1 and ye would not6 ,behold1 your house is left unto you desolate4 ,for ,i say unto you1 ,ye shall not see me henceforth1 till ye shall say1 ',blessed is he that cometh in the name of the ,lord4' ,,the ,,widow',s ,,two ,,mites4 ,and he sat down over against the treasury1 and beheld how the multitude cast money into the treasury3 and many that were rich cast in much4 ,and there came a poor widow1 and she cast in two mites1 which make a farthing4 ,and he called unto him his disciples1 and said unto them1 ,verily1 ,i say unto you1 ,this poor widow cast in more than all they that are casting into the treasury3 for they all did cast in of their superfluity2 but she of her want did cast in all that she had1 even all her living4 ,,the ,,gentiles ,,seek ,,jesus4 ,now there were certain ,greeks among those that went up to worship at the feast3 these therefore came to ,philip1 who was of ,bethsaida of ,galilee1 and asked him1 saying1 ,sir1 we would see ,jesus4 ,philip cometh and telleth ,andrew3 ,andrew cometh1 and ,philip1 and they tell ,jesus4 ,and ,jesus answereth them1 saying1 ,the hour is come1 that the ,son of man should be glorified4 ,verily1 verily1 ,i say unto you1 ,except a grain of wheat fall into the earth and die1 it abideth by itself alone2 but if it die1 it beareth much fruit4 ,he that loveth his life loseth it3 and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal4 ,if any man serve me1 let him follow me3 and where ,i am1 there shall also my servant be3 if any man serve me1 him will the ,father honor4 ,now is my soul troubled2 and what shall ,i say8 ,father1 save me from this hour4 ,but for this cause came ,i unto this hour4 ,father1 glorify thy name4 ,there came therefore a voice out of heaven1 saying1 ,i have both glorified it1 and will glorify it again4 ,the multitude1 therefore1 that stood by1 and heard it1 said that it had thundered3 others said1 ,an angel hath spoken to him4 ,jesus answered and said1 ,this voice hath not come for my sake1 but for your sakes4 ,now is the judgment of this world3 now shall the prince of this world be cast out4 ,and ,i1 if ,i be lifted up from the earth1 will draw all men unto myself4 ,but this he said1 signifying by what manner of death he should die4 ,the multitude therefore answered him1 ,we have heard out of the law that the ,christ abideth forever3 and how sayest thou1 ',the ,son of man must be lifted up'8 who is this ,son of man8 ,jesus therefore said unto them1 ,yet a little while is the light among you4 ,walk while ye have the light that darkness overtake you not3 and he that walketh in the darkness knoweth not whither he goeth4 ,while ye have the light1 believe on the light1 that ye may become sons of light4 ,these things spake ,jesus1 and he departed and hid himself from them4 ,,the ,,jews ,,reject ,,jesus4 ,but though he had done so many signs before them1 yet they believed not on him3 that the word of ,isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled1 which he spake1 ,lord1 who hath believed our report8 ,and to whom hath the arm of the ,lord been revealed8 ,for this cause they could not believe1 for that ,isaiah said again1 ,he hath blinded their eyes1 and he hardened their heart2 ,lest they should see with their eyes1 and perceive with their heart1 ,and should turn1 ,and ,i should heal them4 ,these things said ,isaiah1 because he saw his glory2 and he spake of him4 ,nevertheless even of the rulers many believed on him2 but because of the ,pharisees they did not confess it1 lest they should be put out of the synagogue3 for they loved the glory that is of men more than the glory that is of ,god4 ,and ,jesus cried and said1 ,he that believeth on me1 believeth not on me1 but on him that sent me4 ,and he that beholdeth me beholdeth him that sent me4 ,i am come a light into the world1 that whosoever believeth on me may not abide in the darkness4 ,and if any man hear my sayings1 and keep them not1 ,i judge him not3 for ,i came not to judge the world1 but to save the world4 ,he that rejecteth me1 and receiveth not my sayings1 hath one that judgeth him3 the word that ,i spake1 the same shall judge him in the last day4 ,for ,i spake not from myself2 but the ,father that sent me1 he hath given me a commandment1 what ,i should say1 and what ,i should speak4 ,and ,i know that his commandment is life eternal2 the things therefore which ,i speak1 even as the ,father hath said unto me1 so ,i speak4 ,,discourse ,,concerning ,,the ,,future4 ,and ,jesus went out from the temple1 and was going on his way2 and his disciples came to him to show him the buildings of the temple4 ,but he answered and said unto them1 ,see ye not all these things8 ,verily ,i say unto you1 ,there shall not be left here one stone upon another1 that shall not be thrown down4 ,and as he sat on the mount of ,olives over against the temple1 ,peter and ,james and ,john and ,andrew asked him privately1 ,tell us1 when shall these things be8 and what shall be the sign when these things are all about to be accomplished8 ,and ,jesus began to say unto them1 ,take heed that no man lead you astray4 ,many shall come in my name1 saying1 ',i am he1' and shall lead many astray4 ,and when ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars1 be not troubled3 these things must needs come to pass2 but the end is not yet4 ,for nation shall rise against nation1 and kingdom against kingdom2 there shall be earthquakes in divers places2 there shall be famines3 these things are the beginning of the travail4 ,but take ye heed to yourselves3 for they shall deliver you up to councils2 and in synagogues shall ye be beaten2 and before governors and kings shall ye stand for my sake1 for a testimony unto them4 ,and the gospel must first be preached unto all the nations4 ,and when they lead you to judgment1 and deliver you up1 be not anxious beforehand what ye shall speak2 but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour1 that speak ye2 for it is not ye that speak1 but the ,holy ,spirit4 ,but ye shall be delivered up even by parents1 and brethren1 and kinsfolk1 and friends3 and some of you shall they cause to be put to death4 ,and ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake4 ,and then shall many stumble1 and shall deliver up one another1 and shall hate one another4 ,and many false prophets shall arise1 and shall lead many astray4 ,and because iniquity shall be multiplied1 the love of the many shall wax cold4 ,but he that endureth to the end1 the same shall be saved4 ,but when ye see ,jerusalem compassed with armies1 then know that her desolation is at hand4 ,then let them that are in ,juda flee unto the mountains2 let him that is on the housetop not go down to take out the things that are in his house2 and let him that is in the field not return back to take his cloak4 ,for these are days of vengeance1 that all things which are written may be fulfilled4 ,but woe unto them that are with child and to them that give suck in those days6 ,and pray ye that your flight be not in the winter1 neither on a ,sabbath3 for then shall be great tribulation1 such as hath not been from the beginning of the world until now1 no1 nor ever shall be4 ,and except those days had been shortened1 no flesh would have been saved3 but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened4 ,then if any man shall say unto you1 ',lo1 here is the ,christ1' or1 ',here1' believe it not4 ,for there shall arise false ,christs1 and false prophets1 and shall show great signs and wonders2 so as to lead astray1 if possible1 even the elect4 ,but take ye heed3 behold1 ,i have told you all things beforehand4 ,if1 therefore1 they shall say unto you1 ',behold1 he is in the wilderness1' go not forth3 ',behold1 he is in the inner chambers1' believe it not4 ,for as the lightning cometh forth from the east and is seen even unto the west1 so shall be the coming of the ,son of man4 ,wheresoever the carcase is1 there will the eagles be gathered together4 ,but immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun shall be darkened1 and the moon shall not give her light1 and the stars shall fall from heaven1 and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken3 and then shall appear the sign of the ,son of man in heaven3 and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn1 and they shall see the ,son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory4 ,and he shall send forth his angels with a great sound of a trumpet1 and shall gather together his elect from the four winds1 from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven4 ,now from the fig tree learn her parable3 when her branch is now become tender1 and putteth forth its leaves1 ye know that the summer is nigh2 even so ye also1 when ye see all these things1 know ye that he is nigh1 even at the doors4 ,verily ,i say unto you1 ,this generation shall not pass away till all these things be accomplished4 ,heaven and earth shall pass away1 but my words shall not pass away4 ,but of that day and hour knoweth no one1 not even the angels of heaven1 neither the ,son1 but the ,father only4 ,but take heed to yourselves1 lest haply your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting1 and drunkenness1 and cares of this life1 and that day come on you suddenly as a snare2 for so shall it come upon all them that dwell on the face of all the earth4 ,but watch ye at every season1 making supplication1 that ye may prevail to escape all these things that shall come to pass1 and to stand before the ,son of man4 ,and as were the days of ,noah1 so shall be the coming of the ,son of man4 ,for as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking1 marrying and giving in marriage1 until the day that ,noah entered into the ark1 and they knew not until the flood came1 and took them all away2 so shall be the coming of the ,son of man4 ,then shall two men be in the field2 one is taken1 and one is left2 two women shall be grinding at the mill2 one is taken1 and one is left4 ,watch therefore3 for ye know not on what day your ,lord cometh4 ,but know this1 that if the master of the house had known in what watch the thief was coming1 he would have watched1 and would not have suffered his house to be broken through4 ,therefore be ye also ready2 for in an hour that ye think not the ,son of man cometh4 ,take ye heed1 watch and pray3 for ye know not when the time is4 ,it is as when a man1 sojourning in another country1 having left his house1 and given authority to his servants1 to each one his work1 commanded also the porter to watch4 ,watch therefore3 for ye know not when the lord of the house cometh1 whether at even1 or at midnight1 or at cockcrowing1 or in the morning2 lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping4 ,and what ,i say unto you ,i say unto all1 ,watch4 ,who then is the faithful and wise servant1 whom the lord hath set over his household1 to give them their food in due season8 ,blessed is that servant1 whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing4 ,verily ,i say unto you1 that he will set him over all that he hath4 ,but if that evil servant shall say in his heart1 ',my lord tarrieth'2 and shall begin to beat his fellow-servants1 and shall eat and drink with the drunken2 the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he expecteth not1 and in an hour when he knoweth not1 and shall cut him asunder1 and appoint his portion with the hypocrites3 there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth4 ,,the ,,parable ,,of ,,the ,,ten ,,virgins4 ,then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins1 who took their lamps and went forth to meet the bridegroom4 ,and five of them were foolish1 and five were wise4 ,for the foolish1 when they took their lamps1 took no oil with them3 but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps4 ,now while the bridegroom tarried1 they all slumbered and slept4 ,but at midnight there is a cry1 ',behold1 the bridegroom6 ,come ye forth to meet him4' ,then all those virgins arose1 and trimmed their lamps4 ,and the foolish said unto the wise1 ',give us of your oil2 for our lamps are going out4' ,but the wise answered1 saying1 ',peradventure there will not be enough for us and you3 go ye rather to them that sell1 and buy for yourselves4' ,and while they went away to buy1 the bridegroom came2 and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage feast3 and the door was shut4 ,afterward came also the other virgins1 saying1 ',lord1 ,lord1 open to us4' ,but he answered and said1 ',verily ,i say unto you1 ,i know you not4' ,watch therefore1 for ye know not the day nor the hour4 ,,the ,,parable ,,of ,,the ,,talents4 ,for it is as when a man1 going into another country1 called his own servants1 and delivered unto them his goods4 ,and unto one he gave five talents1 to another two1 to another one2 to each according to his several ability2 and he went on his journey4 ,straightway he that received the five talents went and traded with them1 and made other five talents4 ,in like manner he also that received the two gained other two4 ,but he that received the one went away and digged in the earth1 and hid his lord's money4 ,now after a long time the lord of these servants cometh1 and maketh a reckoning with them4 ,and he that received the five talents came and brought other five talents1 saying1 ',lord1 thou deliveredst unto me five talents3 lo1 ,i have gained other five talents4' ,his lord said unto him1 ',well done1 good and faithful servant3 thou hast been faithful over a few things1 ,i will set thee over many things2 enter thou into the joy of thy lord4' ,and he also that received the two talents came and said1 ',lord1 thou deliveredst unto me two talents3 lo1 ,i have gained other two talents4' ,his lord said unto him1 ',well done1 good and faithful servant3 thou hast been faithful over a few things1 ,i will set thee over many things2 enter thou into the joy of thy lord4' ,and he also that had received the one talent came and said1 ',lord1 ,i knew thee that thou art a hard man1 reaping where thou didst not sow1 and gathering where thou didst not scatter2 and ,i was afraid1 and went away and hid thy talent in the earth3 lo1 thou hast thine own4' ,but his lord answered and said unto him1 ',thou wicked and slothful servant1 thou knewest that ,i reap where ,i sowed not1 and gather where ,i did not scatter2 thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the bankers1 and at my coming ,i should have received back mine own with interest4 ,take ye away therefore the talent from him1 and give it unto him that hath the ten talents4 ,for unto every one that hath shall be given1 and he shall have abundance2 but from him that hath not1 even that which he hath shall be taken away4 ,and cast ye out the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness3 there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth4' ,,the ,,judgment ,,scene4 ,but when the ,son of man shall come in his glory1 and all the angels with him1 then shall he sit on the throne of his glory3 and before him shall be gathered all the nations3 and he shall separate them one from another1 as the shepherd separateth the sheep from the goats2 and he shall set the sheep on his right hand1 but the goats on the left4 ,then shall the ,king say unto them on his right hand1 ',come1 ye blessed of my ,father1 inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world3 for ,i was hungry1 and ye gave me to eat2 ,i was thirsty1 and ye gave me drink2 ,i was a stranger1 and ye took me in2 naked1 and ye clothed me2 ,i was sick1 and ye visited me2 ,i was in prison1 and ye came unto me4' ,then shall the righteous answer him1 saying1 ',lord1 when saw we thee hungry1 and fed thee8 or athirst1 and gave thee drink8 ,and when saw we thee a stranger1 and took thee in8 or naked1 and clothed thee8 ,and when saw we thee sick1 or in prison1 and came unto thee8' ,and the ,king shall answer and say unto them1 ',verily ,i say unto you1 ,inasmuch as ye did it unto one of these my children1 even these least1 ye did it unto me4' ,then shall he say also unto them on the left hand1 ',depart from me1 ye cursed1 into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels3 for ,i was hungry1 and ye did not give me to eat2 ,i was thirsty1 and ye gave me no drink2 ,i was a stranger1 and ye took me not in2 naked1 and ye clothed me not2 sick1 and in prison1 and ye visited me not4' ,then shall they also answer1 saying1 ',lord1 when saw we thee hungry1 or athirst1 or a stranger1 or naked1 or sick1 or in prison1 and did not minister unto thee8' ,then shall he answer them1 saying1 ',verily ,i say unto you1 ,inasmuch as ye did it not unto one of these least1 ye did it not unto me4' ,and these shall go away into eternal punishment3 but the righteous into eternal life4 ,,the ,,conspiracy ,,against ,,jesus4 ,and it came to pass1 when ,jesus had finished all these words1 he said unto his disciples1 ,ye know that after two days the passover cometh1 and the ,son of man is delivered up to be crucified4 ,then were gathered together the chief priests1 the elders of the people1 unto the court of the high priest1 who was called ,caiaphas2 and they took counsel together that they might take ,jesus by subtlety1 and kill him4 ,but they said1 ,not during the feast1 lest a tumult arise among the people4 ,and ,satan entered into ,judas1 who was called ,iscariot1 being of the number of the twelve4 ,and he went away and communed with the chief priests and captains1 how he might deliver him unto them4 ,and they were glad1 and they weighed unto him thirty pieces of silver4 ,and from that time he sought opportunity to deliver him unto them in the absence of the multitude4 ,,wednesday--,,the ,,day ,,of ,,retirement4 ,there is no record of the events of this day4 ,jesus spent it in retirement1 almost certainly in the home of his friends at ,bethany4 ,,thursday--,,the ,,day ,,of ,,fellowship4 ,,preparation ,,for ,,the ,,passover4 ,and on the first day of unleavened bread1 when they sacrificed the passover1 his disciples say unto him1 ,where wilt thou that we go and make ready that thou mayest eat the passover8 ,and he sendeth two of his disciples1 and saith unto them1 ,go into the city1 and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water2 follow him2 and wheresoever he shall enter in1 say to the master of the house1 ',the ,teacher saith1 ,my time is at hand4 ,where is my guest-chamber1 where ,i shall eat the passover with my disciples8' ,and he will himself show you a large upper room furnished and ready3 and there make ready for us4 ,and the disciples went forth1 and came into the city1 and found as he had said unto them3 and they made ready the passover4 ,,strife ,,among ,,the ,,disciples4 ,and when it was evening he cometh with the twelve4 ,and there arose also a contention among them1 which of them was accounted to be greatest4 ,and he said unto them1 ,the kings of the ,gentiles have lordship over them2 and they that have authority over them are called ,benefactors4 ,but ye shall not be so3 but he that is the greater among you1 let him become as the younger3 and he that is chief1 as he that doth serve4 ,for which is greater1 he that sitteth at meat1 or he that serveth8 ,is not he that sitteth at meat8 ,but ,i am in the midst of you as he that serveth4 ,but ye are they that have continued with me in my temptations2 and ,i appoint unto you a kingdom1 even as my ,father appointed unto me1 that ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom2 and ye shall sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of loved his own that were in the world1 he loved them unto the end4 ,and during supper1 the devil having already put into the heart of ,judas ,iscariot1 ,simon's son1 to betray him1 ,jesus1 knowing that the ,father had given all things into his hands1 and that he came forth from ,god1 and goeth unto ,god1 riseth from supper1 and layeth aside his garments2 and he took a towel1 and girded himself4 ,then he poureth water into the basin1 and began to wash the disciples' feet1 and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded4 ,so he cometh to ,simon ,peter4 ,he saith unto him1 ,lord1 dost thou wash my feet8 ,jesus answered and said unto him1 ,what ,i do thou knowest not now2 but thou shalt understand hereafter4 ,peter saith unto him1 ,thou shalt never wash my feet4 ,jesus answered him1 ,if ,i wash thee not1 thou hast no part with me4 ,simon ,peter saith unto him1 ,lord1 not my feet only1 but also my hands and my head4 ,jesus saith to him1 ,he that is bathed needeth not save to wash his feet1 but is clean every whit3 and ye are clean1 but not all4 ,for he knew him that should betray him2 therefore said he1 ,ye are not all clean4 ,so when he had washed their feet1 and taken his garments1 and sat down again1 he said unto them1 ,know ye what ,i have done to you8 ,ye call me ,teacher1 and ,lord3 and ye say well2 for so ,i am4 ,if ,i then1 the ,lord and the ,teacher1 have washed your feet1 ye also ought to wash one another's feet4 ,for ,i have given you an example1 that ye also should do as ,i have done to you4 ,verily1 verily1 ,i say unto you1 ,a servant is not greater than his lord2 neither one that is sent greater than he that sent him4 ,if ye know these things1 blessed are ye if ye do them4 ,i speak not of you all3 ,i know whom ,i have chosen3 but that the scripture may be fulfilled1 ,he that eateth my bread lifted up his heel against me4 ,from henceforth ,i tell you before it come to pass1 that1 when it is come to pass1 ye may believe that ,i am he4 ,verily1 exceeding sorrowful1 and began to say unto him every one1 ,is it ,i1 ,lord8 ,and he answered and said1 ,he that dipped his hand with me in the dish1 the same shall betray me4 ,the ,son of man goeth1 even as it is written of him3 but woe unto that man through whom the ,son of man is betrayed6 ,good were it for that man if he had not been born4 ,and ,judas1 who betrayed him1 answered and said1 ,is it ,i1 ,rabbi8 ,he saith unto him1 ,thou hast said4 ,there was at the table reclining in ,jesus' bosom one of his disciples1 whom ,jesus loved4 ,simon ,peter therefore beckoneth to him1 and saith unto him1 ,tell us who it is of whom he speaketh4 ,he leaning back1 as he was1 on ,jesus' breast1 saith unto him1 ,lord1 who is it8 ,jesus therefore answereth1 ,he it is1 for whom ,i shall dip the sop1 and give it him4 ,so when he had dipped the sop1 he taketh and giveth it to ,judas1 the son of ,simon ,iscariot4 ,and after the sop1 then entered ,satan into him4 ,jesus therefore saith unto him1 ,what thou doest1 do quickly4 ,now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him4 ,for some thought because ,judas had the bag1 that ,jesus said unto him1 ,buy what things we have need of for the feast1 or that he should give something to the poor4 ,he then having received the sop went out straightway3 and it was night4 ,when therefore he was gone out1 ,jesus saith1 ,now is the ,son of of righteousness1 and of judgment3 of sin1 because they believe not on me2 of righteousness1 because ,i go to the ,father1 and ye behold me no more2 of judgment1 because the prince of this world hath shall rejoice1 and your joy no one taketh away from you4 ,and in that day ye shall ask me no question4 ,verily1 verily1 ,i say unto you1 ,if ye shall ask anything of the ,father1 he will give it you in my name4 ,hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name3 ask1 and ye shall receive1 that your joy may be made full4 ,these things have ,i spoken unto you in dark sayings3 the hour cometh1 when ,i shall no more speak unto you in dark sayings1 but shall tell you plainly of the ,father4 ,in that day ye shall ask in my name3 and ,i say not unto you1 that ,i will pray the ,father for you2 for the ,father didst send1 even ,jesus ,christ4 ,i glorified thee on the earth1 having accomplished the work which thou hast given me to do4 ,and now1 ,father1 glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which ,i had with thee before the world was4 ,i manifested thy name unto the men whom thou gavest me out of the world3 thine they were1 and thou gavest them to me2 and they have kept thy word4 ,now they know that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are from thee3 for the words which thou gavest me ,i have given unto them2 and they received them1 and knew of a truth that ,i came forth from thee1 and they believed that thou didst send me4 ,i pray for them3 ,i pray not for the world1 but for those whom thou hast given me2 for they are thine3 and all things that are mine are thine1 and thine are mine3 and ,i am glorified in them4 ,and ,i am no more in the world1 and these are in the world1 and ,i come to thee4 ,holy ,father1 keep them in thy name which thou hast given me1 that they may be one1 even as we are4 ,while ,i was with them1 ,i kept them in thy name which thou hast given me2 and ,i guarded them1 and not one of them perished1 but the son of perdition2 that the scripture might be fulfilled4 ,but now ,i come to thee2 and these things ,i speak in the world1 that they may have my joy made full in themselves4 ,i have given them thy word1 and the world hated them1 because they are not of the world1 even as ,i am not of the world4 ,i pray not that thou shouldest take them from the world1 but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil one4 ,they are not of the world1 even as ,i am not of the world4 ,sanctify them in the truth3 thy word is truth4 ,as thou didst send me into the world1 even so sent ,i them into the world4 ,and for their sakes ,i sanctify myself1 that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth4 ,neither for these only do ,i pray1 but for them also that believe on me through their word2 that they may all be one2 even as thou1 ,father1 art in me1 and ,i in thee1 that they also may be in us3 that the world may believe that thou didst send me4 ,and the glory which thou hast given me ,i have given unto them2 that they may be one1 even as we are one2 ,i in them1 and thou in me1 that they may be perfected into one2 that the world may know that thou didst send me1 and lovedst them1 even as thou lovedst me4 ,father1 ,i desire that they also whom thou hast given me be with me where ,i am1 that they may behold my glory1 which thou hast given me3 for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world4 ,o righteous ,father1 the world knew thee not1 but ,i knew thee2 and these knew that thou didst send me2 and ,i made known unto them thy name1 and will make it known2 that the love wherewith thou lovedst me may be in them1 and ,i in them4 ,and when they had sung a hymn1 they went out into the mount of ,olives4 ,,friday--,,the ,,day ,,of ,,suffering4 ,,the ,,agony ,,in ,,gethsemane4 ,and they come unto a place which was named ,gethsemane3 and he saith unto his disciples1 ,sit ye here1 while ,i pray4 ,and he taketh with him ,peter and ,james and ,john1 and began to be greatly amazed1 and sore troubled4 ,and he saith unto them1 ,my soul is exceeding sorrowful even unto death3 abide ye here1 and watch4 ,and he went forward a little1 and fell on the ground1 and prayed that1 if it were possible1 the hour might pass away from him4 ,and he said1 ,abba1 ,father1 all things are possible unto thee2 remove this cup from me3 howbeit not what ,i will1 but what thou wilt4 ,and there appeared unto him an angel from heaven1 strengthening him4 ,and being in an agony1 he prayed more earnestly2 and his sweat became as it were great drops of blood falling down upon the ground4 ,and when he rose up from his prayer1 he came unto the disciples1 and found them sleeping for sorrow1 and said unto ,peter1 ,simon1 sleepest thou8 ,couldest thou not watch one hour8 ,watch and pray1 that ye enter not into temptation3 the spirit indeed is willing1 but the flesh is weak4 ,again a second time he went away1 and prayed1 saying1 ,my ,father1 if this cannot pass away1 except ,i drink it1 thy will be done4 ,and he came again and found them sleeping1 for their eyes were heavy4 ,and he left them again1 and went away1 and prayed a third time1 saying the same words4 ,then cometh he to the disciples1 and saith unto them1 ,sleep on now1 and take your rest3 behold1 the hour is at hand1 and the ,son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners4 ,arise1 let us be going3 behold1 he is at hand that betrayeth me4 ,,the ,,betrayal ,,and ,,arrest4 ,and straightway1 while he yet spake1 cometh ,judas1 one of the twelve1 and with him a multitude with swords and staves1 from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders4 ,now he that betrayed him had given them a token1 saying1 ,whomsoever ,i shall kiss1 that is he2 take him1 and lead him away safely4 ,and when he was come1 straightway he came to him1 and saith1 ,rabbi1 and kissed him4 ,but ,jesus said unto him1 ,judas1 betrayest thou the ,son of man with a kiss8 ,jesus1 therefore1 knowing all the things that were coming upon him1 went forth1 and saith unto them1 ,whom seek ye8 ,they answered him1 ,jesus of ,nazareth4 ,jesus saith unto them1 ,i am he4 ,and ,judas also1 who betrayed him1 was standing with them4 ,when therefore he said unto them1 ,i am he1 they went backward1 and fell to the ground4 ,again therefore he asked them1 ,whom seek ye8 ,and they said1 ,jesus of ,nazareth4 ,jesus answered1 ,i told you that ,i am he2 if therefore ye seek me1 let these go their way3 that the word might be fulfilled which he spake1 ,of those whom thou hast given me ,i lost not one4 ,and when they that were about him saw what would follow1 they said1 ,lord1 shall we smite with the sword8 ,simon ,peter therefore having a sword drew it1 and struck the high priest's servant1 and cut off his right ear4 ,now the servant's name was ,malchus4 ,but ,jesus answered and said1 ,suffer ye them thus far4 ,and he touched his ear1 and healed him4 ,then saith ,jesus unto ,peter1 ,put up again thy sword into its place3 for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword4 ,or thinkest thou that ,i cannot beseech my ,father and he shall even now send me more than twelve legions of angels8 ,how then should the scriptures be fulfilled1 that thus it must be8 ,the cup which the ,father hath given me1 shall ,i not drink it8 ,and ,jesus said unto the chief priests and captains of the temple1 and elders1 that were come against him1 ,are ye come out as against a robber1 with swords and staves8 ,when ,i was daily with you in the temple1 ye stretched not forth your hands against me3 but this is your hour1 and the power of darkness4 ,then all the disciples left him1 and fled4 ,and a certain young man followed with him1 having a linen cloth cast about him1 over his naked body3 and they lay hold on him2 but he left the linen cloth1 and fled naked4 ,,the ,,trial ,,before ,,the ,,jewish ,,authorities4 ,so the band and the chief captain1 and the officers of the ,jews1 seized ,jesus and bound him1 and led him to ,annas first2 for he was father in law to ,caiaphas1 who was high priest that year4 ,now ,caiaphas was he that gave counsel to the ,jews1 that it was expedient that one man should die for the people4 ,and ,simon ,peter followed ,jesus1 and so did another disciple4 ,now that disciple was known unto the high priest1 and entered in with ,jesus into the court of the high priest2 but ,peter was standing at the door without4 ,so the other disciple1 who was known unto the high priest1 went out and spake unto her that kept the door1 and brought in ,peter4 ,the maid therefore that kept the door saith unto ,peter1 ,art thou also one of this man's disciples8 ,he saith1 ,i am not4 ,now the servants and the officers were standing there1 having made a fire of coals2 for it was cold2 and they were warming themselves2 and ,peter also was with them standing and warming himself4 ,the high priest therefore asked ,jesus of his disciples1 and of his teaching4 ,jesus answered him1 ,i have spoken openly to the world2 ,i even taught in synagogues1 and in the temple1 where all the ,jews come together2 and in secret spake ,i nothing4 ,why askest thou me8 ,ask them that have heard me1 what ,i spake unto them3 behold1 these know the things which ,i said4 ,and when he had said this1 one of the officers standing by struck ,jesus with his hand1 saying1 ,answerest thou the high priest so8 ,jesus answered him1 ,if ,i have spoken evil1 bear witness of the evil2 but if well1 why smitest thou me8 ,annas therefore sent him bound unto ,caiaphas the high priest4 ,now the chief priests and the whole council sought witness against ,jesus to put him to death2 and found it not4 ,for many bare false witness against him1 and their witness agreed not together4 ,and there stood up certain1 and bare false witness against him1 saying1 ,we heard him say1 ,i will destroy this temple that is made with hands1 and in three days ,i will build another made without hands4 ,and not even so did their witness agree together4 ,and the high priest stood up in the midst1 and asked ,jesus1 saying1 ,answerest thou nothing8 ,what is it which these witness against thee8 ,but he held his peace1 and answered nothing4 ,and the high priest said unto him1 ,i adjure thee by the living ,god1 that thou tell us whether thou art the ,christ1 the ,son of ,god4 ,and ,jesus said1 ,i am3 and ye shall see the ,son of man sitting at the right hand of ,power1 and coming with the clouds of heaven4 ,and the high priest rent his clothes1 and saith1 ,what further need have we of witnesses8 ,ye have heard the blasphemy3 what think ye8 ,and they all condemned him to be worthy of death4 ,then did they spit in his face and buffet him4 ,and they blindfolded him and smote him with the palms of their hands1 saying1 ,prophesy unto us1 thou ,christ3 who is he that struck thee8 ,,the ,,denial ,,of ,,peter4 ,and as ,peter was beneath in the court1 there cometh one of the maids of the high priest2 and seeing ,peter warming himself1 she looked upon him1 and saith1 ,thou also wast with the ,nazarene1 even ,jesus4 ,but he denied1 saying1 ,i neither know nor understand what thou sayest1 and he went out into the porch2 and the cock crew4 ,and after a little while they that stood by came and said to ,peter1 ,of a truth thou also art one of them2 for thy speech maketh thee known4 ,then began he to curse and to swear1 ,i know not the man4 ,and straightway the cock crew4 ,and the ,lord turned1 and looked upon ,peter4 ,and ,peter remembered the word of the ,lord1 how that he said unto him1 ,before the cock crow twice thou shalt deny me thrice4 ,and he went out1 and wept bitterly4 ,and straightway in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes1 and the whole council1 held a consultation1 and bound ,jesus1 and carried him away1 and delivered him up to ,pilate1 the governor4 ,,the ,,remorse ,,of ,,judas4 ,then ,judas1 who betrayed him1 when he saw that he was condemned1 repented himself1 and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders1 saying1 ,i have sinned in that ,i betrayed innocent blood4 ,but they said1 ,what is that to us8 ,see thou to it4 ,and he cast down the pieces of silver into the sanctuary1 and departed2 and he went away and hanged himself4 ,and the chief priests took the pieces of silver1 and said1 ,it is not lawful to put them into the treasury1 since it is the price of blood4 ,and they took counsel1 and bought with them the potter's field1 to bury strangers in4 ,wherefore that field was called1 ,the field of blood1 unto this day4 ,then was fulfilled that which was spoken through ,jeremiah the prophet1 saying1 ,and they took the thirty pieces of silver1 the price of him that was priced1 whom certain of the children of ,israel did price2 and they gave them for the potter's field1 as the ,lord appointed me4 ,,the ,,trial ,,before ,,pilate4 ,they led ,jesus therefore from ,caiaphas into the ,prtorium3 and it was early2 and they themselves entered not into the ,prtorium1 that they might not be defiled1 but might eat the passover4 ,pilate therefore went out unto them1 and saith1 ,what accusation bring ye against this man8 ,they answered and said unto him1 ,if this man were not an evil-doer1 we should not have delivered him up unto thee4 ,pilate therefore said unto them1 ,take him yourselves1 and judge him according to your law4 ,the ,jews said unto him1 ,it is not lawful for us to put any man to death3 that the word of ,jesus might be fulfilled1 which he spake1 signifying by what manner of death he should die4 ,and they began to accuse him1 saying1 ,we found this man perverting our nation1 and forbidding to give tribute to ,csar1 and saying that he himself is ,christ a king4 ,and when he was accused by the chief priests and elders1 he answered nothing4 ,then saith ,pilate unto him1 ,hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee8 ,and he gave him no answer1 not even to one word3 insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly4 ,pilate therefore entered again into the ,prtorium1 and called ,jesus1 and said unto him1 ,art thou the ,king of the ,jews8 ,jesus answered1 ,sayest thou this of thyself1 or did others tell it thee concerning me8 ,pilate answered1 ,am ,i a ,jew8 ,thine own nation and the chief priests delivered thee unto me3 what hast thou done8 ,jesus answered1 ,my kingdom is not of this world3 if my kingdom were of this world1 then would my servants fight1 that ,i should not be delivered to the ,jews2 but now is my kingdom not from hence4 ,pilate therefore said unto him1 ,art thou a king then8 ,jesus answered1 ,thou sayest that ,i am a king4 ,to this end have ,i been born1 and to this end am ,i come into the world1 that ,i should bear witness unto the truth4 ,every one that is of the truth heareth my voice4 ,pilate saith unto him1 ,what is truth8 ,and when he had said this1 he went out again unto the ,jews1 and saith unto them1 ,i find no crime in him4 ,but they were the more urgent1 saying1 ,he stirreth up the people1 teaching throughout all ,juda1 and beginning from ,galilee1 even unto this place4 ,but when ,pilate heard it1 he asked whether the man were a ,galilan4 ,and when he knew that he was of ,herod's jurisdiction1 he sent him unto ,herod1 who himself also was at ,jerusalem in these days4 ,,jesus ,,before ,,herod4 ,now when ,herod saw ,jesus1 he was exceeding glad2 for he was of a long time desirous to see him1 because he had heard concerning him2 and he hoped to see some miracle done by him4 ,and he questioned him in many words2 but he answered him nothing4 ,and the chief priests and the scribes stood1 vehemently accusing him4 ,and ,herod with his soldiers set him at nought1 and mocked him1 and arraying him in gorgeous apparel sent him back to ,pilate4 ,and ,herod and ,pilate became friends with each other that very day3 for before they were at enmity between themselves4 ,,the ,,trial ,,before ,,pilate ,,resumed4 ,and ,pilate called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people1 and said unto them1 ,ye brought unto me this man1 as one that perverteth the people3 and behold1 ,i1 having examined him before you1 found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him3 no1 nor yet ,herod3 for he sent him back unto us2 and behold1 nothing worthy of death hath been done by him4 ,i will therefore chastise him1 and release him4 ,now at the feast the governor was wont to release unto the multitude one prisoner1 whom they would4 ,and they had then a notable prisoner1 called ,barabbas1 lying bound with them that had made insurrection1 men who in the insurrection had committed murder4 ,and the multitude went up and began to ask him to do as he was wont to do unto them4 ,and ,pilate answered them1 saying1 ,will ye that ,i release unto you the ,king of the ,jews8 ,for he perceived that for envy the chief priests had delivered him up4 ,now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for ,barabbas1 and destroy ,jesus4 ,but the governor answered and said unto them1 ,which of the two will ye that ,i release unto you8 ,and they said1 ,barabbas4 ,pilate saith unto them1 ,what then shall ,i do unto ,jesus who is called ,christ8 ,they all say1 ,let him be crucified4 ,and he said unto them a third time1 ,why1 what evil hath this man done8 ,i have found no cause of death in him3 ,i will therefore chastise and release him4 ,then ,pilate therefore took ,jesus1 and scourged him4 ,and the soldiers led him away within the court1 which is the ,prtorium2 and they call together the whole band4 ,and they stripped him1 and arrayed him in a purple garment4 ,and they platted a crown of thorns and put it upon his head1 and a reed in his right hand2 and they kneeled down before him1 and mocked him1 saying3 ,hail1 ,king of the ,jews6 and they struck him with their hands4 ,and they spat upon him1 and took the reed and smote him upon the head4 ,and ,pilate went out again1 and saith unto them1 ,behold1 ,i bring him out to you1 that ye may know that ,i find no crime in him4 ,jesus therefore came out1 wearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment4 ,and ,pilate saith unto them1 ,behold1 the man6 ,when therefore the chief priests and the officers saw him1 they cried out1 saying1 ,crucify him1 crucify him6 ,pilate saith unto them1 ,take him yourselves1 and crucify him3 for ,i find no crime in him4 ,the ,jews answered him1 ,we have a law1 and by that law he ought to die1 because he made himself the ,son of ,god4 ,when ,pilate therefore heard this saying1 he was the more afraid2 and he entered into the ,prtorium again1 and saith unto ,jesus1 ,whence art thou8 ,but ,jesus gave him no answer4 ,pilate therefore saith unto him1 ,speakest thou not unto me8 ,knowest thou not that ,i have power to release thee1 and have power to crucify thee8 ,jesus answered him1 ,thou wouldest have no power against me1 except it were given thee from above3 therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath greater sin4 ,upon this ,pilate sought to release him3 but the ,jews cried out1 saying1 ,if thou release this man1 thou art not ,csar's friend3 every one that maketh himself a king speaketh against ,csar4 ,when ,pilate therefore heard these words1 he brought ,jesus out1 and sat down on the judgment-seat at a place called ,the ,pavement1 but in ,hebrew1 ,gabbatha4 ,and while he was sitting on the judgment-seat1 his wife sent unto him1 saying1 ,have thou nothing to do with that righteous man2 for ,i have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him4 ,now it was the ,preparation of the passover3 it was about the sixth hour4 ,and he saith unto the ,jews1 ,behold1 your ,king4 ,they therefore cried out1 ,away with him1 away with him1 crucify him6 ,pilate saith unto them1 ,shall ,i crucify your ,king8 ,the chief priests answered1 ,we have no king but ,csar4 ,so when ,pilate saw that he prevailed nothing1 but rather that a tumult was arising1 he took water1 and washed his hands before the multitude1 saying1 ,i am innocent of the blood of this righteous man2 see ye to it4 ,and all the people answered and said1 ,his blood be on us1 and on our children4 ,and they were urgent with loud voices asking that he might be crucified4 ,and their voices prevailed4 ,and ,pilate1 wishing to content the multitude1 gave sentence that what they asked for should be done4 ,and he released unto them ,barabbas1 him that for insurrection and murder had been cast into prison1 whom they asked for2 but ,jesus he delivered up to their will4 ,and when they had mocked him1 they took off from him the robe1 and put on him his garments1 and led him away to crucify him4 ,,the ,,sorrowful ,,way4 ,they took ,jesus therefore3 and he went out1 bearing the cross for himself4 ,and as they came out1 they laid hold upon one ,simon of ,cyrene1 the father of ,alexander and ,rufus1 who was passing by1 coming from the country2 him they compelled to go with them1 and laid on him the cross1 that he might bear it after ,jesus4 ,and there followed him a great multitude of the people1 and of women who bewailed and lamented him4 ,but ,jesus turning unto them said1 ,daughters of ,jerusalem1 weep not for me1 but weep for yourselves1 and for your children4 ,for behold1 the days are coming1 in which they shall say1 ',blessed are the barren1 and the wombs that never bare1 and the breasts that never gave suck4' ,then shall they begin to say to the mountains1 ',fall on us'2 and to the hills1 ',cover us4' ,for if they do these things in the green tree1 what shall be done in the dry8 ,and there were also two others1 malefactors1 led with him to be put to death4 ,,the ,,crucifixion4 ,and when they were come unto a place called ,golgotha1 that is to say1 ,the place of a skull1 they gave him wine to drink mingled with gall3 and when he had tasted it1 he would not drink4 ,there they crucified him1 and the malefactors1 one on the right hand and the other on the left4 ,and ,jesus said1 ,father1 forgive them2 for they know not what they do4 ,and ,pilate wrote a title also1 and put it on the cross4 ,and there was written3 ---------------------------------------- ---- ,,jesus ,,of ,,nazareth1 ,,the ,,king ,,of ,,the ,,jews4 ---------------------------------------- ---- ,this title therefore read many of the ,jews1 for the place where ,jesus was crucified was nigh to the city2 and it was written in ,hebrew1 and in ,latin1 and in ,greek4 ,the chief priests of the ,jews therefore said to ,pilate1 ,write not1 ',the ,king of the ,jews1' but that he said1 ',i am ,king of the ,jews4' ,pilate answered1 ,what ,i have written ,i have written4 ,the soldiers therefore1 when they had crucified ,jesus1 took his garments and made four parts1 to every soldier a part2 and also the coat3 now the coat was without seam1 woven from the top throughout4 ,they said therefore one to another1 ,let us not rend it1 but cast lots for it1 whose it shall be3 that the scripture might be fulfilled1 which saith1 ,they parted my garments among them1 ,and upon my vesture did they cast lots4 ,these things therefore the soldiers did2 and they sat and watched him there4 ,and the people stood beholding4 ,and they that passed by railed on him1 wagging their heads1 and saying1 ,thou that destroyest the temple1 and buildest it in three days1 save thyself3 if thou art the ,son of ,god1 come down from the cross4 ,in like manner also1 the chief priests mocking him1 with the scribes and elders1 said1 ,he saved others2 himself he cannot save4 ,let the ,christ1 the ,king of ,israel1 now come down from the cross1 that we may see and believe4 ,he trusteth on ,god2 let him deliver him now1 if he desireth him3 for he said1 ,i am the ,son of ,god4 ,and one of the malefactors that were hanged railed on him1 saying1 ,art not thou the ,christ8 ,save thyself and us4 ,but the other answered1 and rebuking him said1 ,dost thou not even fear ,god1 seeing thou art in the same condemnation8 ,and we indeed justly2 for we receive the due reward of our deeds3 but this man hath done nothing amiss4 ,and he said1 ,jesus1 remember me when thou comest in thy kingdom4 ,and he said unto him1 ,verily ,i say unto thee1 ,to-day shalt thou be with me in ,paradise4 ,but there were standing by the cross of ,jesus his mother1 and his mother's sister1 ,mary the wife of ,cleopas1 and ,mary ,magdalene4 ,when ,jesus therefore saw his mother1 and the disciple standing by whom he loved1 he saith unto his mother1 ,woman1 behold thy son6 ,then saith he to the disciple1 ,behold thy mother6 ,and from that hour the disciple took her unto his owns home4 ,and when the sixth hour was come1 there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour4 ,and at the ninth hour ,jesus cried with a loud voice1 ,eloi1 ,eloi1 lama sabachthani8 which is1 being interpreted1 ,my ,god1 my ,god1 why hast thou forsaken me8 ,and some of them that stood by1 when they heard it1 said1 ,behold1 he calleth ,elijah4 ,after this1 ,jesus1 knowing that all things are now finished1 that the scripture might be accomplished1 saith1 ,i thirst4 ,there was set there a vessel full of vinegar3 so they put a sponge full of the vinegar upon hyssop1 and brought it to his mouth4 ,when ,jesus therefore had received the vinegar1 he said1 ,it is finished4 ,and ,jesus1 crying with a loud voice1 said1 ,father1 into thy hands ,i commend my spirit1 and having said this1 he gave up the ghost4 ,and behold1 the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom2 and the earth did quake2 and the rocks were rent2 and the tombs were opened2 and many bodies of the saints that had fallen asleep were raised2 and coming forth out of the tombs after his resurrection they entered into the holy city and appeared unto many4 ,now the centurion1 and they that were with him watching ,jesus1 when they saw the earthquake1 and the things that were done1 feared exceedingly1 saying1 ,truly this was the ,son of ,god4 ,and all the multitudes that came together to this sight1 when they beheld the things that were done1 returned smiting their breasts4 ,and many women were there beholding from afar1 who had followed ,jesus from ,galilee1 ministering unto him2 among whom was ,mary ,magdalene1 and ,mary the mother of ,james and ,joses1 and the mother of the sons of ,zebedee4 ,the ,jews therefore1 because it was the ,preparation1 that the bodies should not remain on the cross upon the sabbath 7for the day of that sabbath was a high day71 asked of ,pilate that their legs might be broken1 and that they might be taken away4 ,the soldiers therefore came1 and brake the legs of the first1 and of the other that was crucified with him3 but when they came to ,jesus1 and saw that he was dead already1 they brake not his legs2 howbeit one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side1 and straightway there came out blood and water4 ,and he that hath seen hath borne witness1 and his witness is true3 and he knoweth that he saith true1 that ye also may believe4 ,for these things came to pass1 that the scripture might be fulfilled1 ,a bone of him shall not be broken4 ,and again another scripture saith1 ,they shall look on him whom they pierced4 ,,the ,,burial4 ,and after these things1 when even was come1 there came a rich man from ,arimatha1 named ,joseph1 a councillor of honorable estate1 a disciple of ,jesus1 but secretly for fear of the ,jews2 and he boldly went in unto ,pilate and asked for the body of ,jesus4 ,and ,pilate marvelled if he were already dead3 and calling unto him the centurion1 he asked him whether he had been any while dead4 ,and when he learned it of the centurion1 he granted the corpse to ,joseph4 ,he came therefore1 and took away his body4 ,and there came also ,nicodemus1 he who at the first came to him by night1 bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes1 about a hundred pounds4 ,so they took the body of ,jesus1 and bound it in linen cloths with the spices1 as the custom of the ,jews is to bury4 ,now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden3 and in the garden a new tomb wherein was never man yet laid4 ,there then because of the ,jews' ,preparation 7for the tomb was nigh at hand71 they laid ,jesus2 and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb4 ,and ,mary ,magdalene and ,mary the mother of ,joses beheld the tomb1 and how his body was laid4 ,and they returned1 and prepared spices and ointments4 ,,saturday--,,the ,,day ,,of ,,silence ,,and ,,sorrow4 ,,the ,,watch ,,at ,,the ,,tomb4 ,now on the morrow1 which is the day after the ,preparation1 the chief priests and the ,pharisees were gathered together unto ,pilate1 saying1 ,sir1 we remember that that deceiver said while he was yet alive1 ',after three days ,i rise again4' ,command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day1 lest haply his disciples come and steal him away1 and say unto the people1 ',he is risen from the dead1' and the last error will be worse than the first4 ,pilate said unto them1 ,ye have a guard3 go1 make it as sure as ye can4 ,so they went1 and made the sepulchre sure1 sealing the stone1 the guard being with them4 ,,sunday--,,the ,,day ,,of ,,resurrection4 ,,the ,,earthquake4 ,and behold1 there was a great earthquake2 for an angel of the ,lord descended from heaven1 and came and rolled away the stone1 and sat upon it4 ,his appearance was as lightning1 and his raiment white as snow3 and for fear of him the watchers did quake1 and became as dead men4 ,,the ,,empty ,,tomb4 ,now on the first day of the week cometh ,mary ,magdalene early1 while it was yet dark1 unto the tomb1 and seeth the stone taken away from the tomb4 ,she runneth therefore1 and cometh to ,simon ,peter1 and to the other disciple whom ,jesus loved1 and saith unto them1 ,they have taken away the ,lord out of the tomb1 and we know not where they have laid him4 ,peter therefore went forth1 and the other disciple1 and they went toward the tomb4 ,and they ran both together3 and the other disciple outran ,peter1 and came first to the tomb2 and stooping and looking in1 he seeth the linen cloths lying2 yet entered he not in4 ,simon ,peter therefore also cometh1 following him1 and entered into the tomb3 and he beholdeth the linen cloths lying1 and the napkin1 that was upon his head1 not lying with the linen cloths1 but rolled up in a place by itself4 ,then entered in therefore the other disciple also1 who came first to the tomb1 and he saw1 and believed4 ,for as yet they knew not the scripture1 that he must rise again from the dead4 ,so the disciples went away again unto their own home4 ,,the ,,appearance ,,to ,,mary4 ,but ,mary was standing without at the tomb weeping3 so1 as she wept1 she stooped and looked into the tomb2 and she beholdeth two angels in white sitting1 one at the head1 and one at the feet1 where the body of ,jesus had lain4 ,and they say unto her1 ,woman1 why weepest thou8 ,she saith unto them1 ,because they have taken away my ,lord1 and ,i know not where they have laid him4 ,when she had thus said1 she turned herself back1 and beholdeth ,jesus standing1 and knew not that it was ,jesus4 ,jesus saith unto her1 ,woman1 why weepest thou8 ,whom seekest thou8 ,she1 supposing him to be the gardener1 saith unto him1 ,sir1 if thou hast borne him hence1 tell me where thou hast laid him1 and ,i will take him away4 ,jesus saith unto her1 ,mary4 ,she turneth herself1 and saith unto him in ,hebrew1 ,rabboni2 which is to say1 ,teacher4 ,jesus saith to her1 ,touch me not2 for ,i am not yet ascended unto the ,father2 but go unto my brethren1 and say to them1 ',i ascend unto my ,father1 and your ,father1 and my ,god and your ,god4' ,mary ,magdalene cometh and telleth the disciples1 ,i have seen the ,lord2 and that he had said these things unto her4 ,,the ,,appearance ,,to ,,the ,,women4 ,and the women which had come with him out of ,galilee came unto the tomb1 bringing the spices which they had prepared4 ,and they were saying among themselves1 ,who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the tomb8 and looking up1 they see that the stone is rolled back3 for it was exceeding great4 ,and entering into the tomb1 they saw a young man sitting on the right side1 arrayed in a white robe2 and they were amazed4 ,and he saith unto them1 ,be not amazed3 ye seek ,jesus1 the ,nazarene1 who hath been crucified2 he is risen2 he is not here3 behold1 the place where they laid him6 ,but go1 tell his disciples and ,peter1 ',he goeth before you into ,galilee3 there shall ye see him1 as he said unto you4' ,and they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy1 and ran to bring his disciples word4 ,and behold1 ,jesus met them1 saying1 ,all hail4 ,and they came and took hold of his feet1 and worshipped him4 ,then saith ,jesus unto them1 ,fear not3 go tell my brethren that they depart into ,galilee1 and there shall they see me4 ,,report ,,of ,,the ,,watch4 ,now while they were going1 behold1 some of the guard came into the city1 and told unto the chief priests all the things that were come to pass4 ,and when they were assembled with the elders1 and had taken counsel1 they gave much money unto the soldiers1 saying1 ,say ye1 ',his disciples came by night1 and stole him away while we slept4' ,and if this come to the governor's ears1 we will persuade him1 and rid you of care4 ,so they took the money and did as they were taught3 and this saying was spread abroad among the ,jews1 and continueth until this day4 ,,the ,,appearance ,,at ,,emmaus4 ,and behold1 two of them were going that very day to a village named ,emmaus1 which was three-score furlongs from ,jerusalem4 ,and they communed with each other of all these things which had happened4 ,and it came to pass1 while they communed and questioned together1 that ,jesus himself drew near1 and went with them4 ,but their eyes were holden that they should not know him4 ,and he said unto them1 ,what communications are these that ye have one with another1 as ye walk8 ,and they stood still1 looking sad4 ,and one of them1 named ,cleopas1 answering1 said unto him1 ,dost thou alone sojourn in ,jerusalem and not know the things which are come to pass there in these days8 ,and he said unto them1 ,what things8 ,and they said unto him1 ,the things concerning ,jesus the ,nazarene1 who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before ,god1 and all the people3 and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death1 and crucified him4 ,but we hoped that it was he who should redeem ,israel4 ,yea1 and besides all this1 it is now the third day since these things came to pass4 ,moreover1 certain women of our company amazed us1 having been early at the tomb2 and when they found not his body1 they came1 saying1 that they had also seen a vision of angels1 who said that he was alive4 ,and certain of them that were with us went to the tomb1 and found it even so as the women had said3 but him they saw not4 ,and he said unto them1 ,o foolish men1 and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken6 ,behooved it not the ,christ to suffer these things1 and to enter into his glory8 ,and beginning from ,moses and from all the prophets1 he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself4 ,and they drew nigh unto the village1 whither they were going3 and he made as though he would go further4 ,and they constrained him1 saying1 ,abide with us2 for it is toward evening1 and the day is now far spent4 ,and he went in to abide with them4 ,and it came to pass1 when he had sat down with them to meat1 he took the bread and blessed2 and breaking it1 he gave to them4 ,and their eyes were opened1 and they knew him2 and he vanished out of their sight4 ,and they said one to another1 ,was not our heart burning within us1 while he spake to us in the way1 while he opened to us the scriptures8 ,and they rose up that very hour1 and returned to ,jerusalem1 and found the eleven gathered together1 and them that were with them1 saying1 ,the ,lord is risen indeed1 and hath appeared to ,simon4 ,and they rehearsed the things that happened in the way1 and how he was known of them in the breaking of the bread4 ,,the ,,appearance ,,to ,,the ,,disciples4 ,when therefore it was evening1 on that day1 the first day of the week1 and when the doors were shut where the disciples were1 for fear of the ,jews1 ,jesus came and stood in the midst and saith unto them1 ,peace be unto you4 ,but they were terrified and affrighted1 and supposed that they beheld a spirit4 ,and he said unto them1 ,why are ye troubled8 and wherefore do questionings arise in your heart8 ,see my hands and my feet1 that it is ,i myself3 handle me1 and see3 for a spirit hath not flesh and bones1 as ye behold me having4 ,and when he had said this1 he showed them his hands and his feet4 ,and while they still disbelieved for joy1 and wondered1 he said unto them1 ,have ye here anything to eat8 ,and they gave him a piece of broiled fish4 ,and he took it1 and ate before them4 ,jesus therefore said to them again1 ,peace be unto you3 as the ,father hath sent me1 even so send ,i you4 ,and when he had said this1 he breathed on them1 and saith unto them1 ,receive ye the ,holy ,spirit3 whose soever sins ye forgive1 they are forgiven unto them2 whose soever sins ye retain1 they are retained4 ,,after ,,the ,,resurrection ,,day4 ,,the ,,appearance ,,to ,,the ,,disciples ,,and ,,to ,,thomas4 ,but ,thomas1 one of the twelve1 called ,didymus1 was not with them when ,jesus came4 ,the other disciples therefore said unto him1 ,we have seen the ,lord4 ,but he said unto them1 ,except ,i shall see in his hands the print of the nails1 and put my finger into the print of the nails1 and put my hand into his side1 ,i will not believe4 ,and after eight days again his disciples were within1 and ,thomas with them4 ,jesus cometh1 the doors being shut1 and stood in the midst1 and said1 ,peace be unto you4 ,then saith he to ,thomas1 ,reach hither thy finger1 and see my hands2 and reach hither thy hand1 and put it into my side3 and be not faithless1 but believing4 ,thomas answered and said unto him1 ,my ,lord and my ,god4 ,jesus saith unto him1 ,because thou hast seen me1 thou hast believed3 blessed are they that have not seen1 and yet have believed4 ,,the ,,appearance ,,to ,,the ,,seven ,,by ,,the ,,sea4 ,after these things ,jesus manifested himself again to the disciples at the sea of ,tiberias2 and he manifested himself on this wise4 ,there were together ,simon ,peter1 and ,thomas called ,didymus and ,nathanael of ,cana in ,galilee1 and the sons of ,zebedee1 and two other of his disciples4 ,simon ,peter saith unto them1 ,i go a fishing4 ,they say unto him1 ,we also come with thee4 ,they went forth1 and entered into the boat2 and that night they took nothing4 ,but when day was now breaking1 ,jesus stood on the beach3 yet the disciples knew not that it was ,jesus4 ,jesus therefore saith unto them1 ,children1 have ye aught to eat8 ,they answered him1 ,no4 ,and he said unto them1 ,cast the net on the right side of the boat1 and ye shall find4 ,they cast therefore1 and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes4 ,that disciple therefore whom ,jesus loved saith unto ,peter1 ,it is the ,lord4 ,so when ,simon ,peter heard that it was the ,lord1 he girt his coat about him 7for he was naked71 and cast himself into the sea4 ,but the other disciples came in the little boat 7for they were not far from the land1 but about two hundred cubits off71 dragging the net full of fishes4 ,so when they got out upon the land1 they see a fire of coals there1 and fish laid thereon1 and bread4 ,jesus saith unto them1 ,bring of the fish which ye have now taken4 ,simon ,peter therefore went up1 and drew the net to land1 full of great fishes1 a hundred and fifty and three2 and for all there were so many1 the net was not rent4 ,jesus saith unto them1 ,come and break your fast4 ,and none of the disciples durst inquire of him1 ,who art thou8 knowing that it was the ,lord4 ,jesus cometh1 and taketh the bread1 and giveth them1 and the fish likewise4 ,this is now the third time that ,jesus was manifested to the disciples1 after that he was risen from the dead4 ,so when they had broken their fast1 ,jesus saith to ,simon ,peter1 ,simon1 son of ,john1 lovest thou me more than these8 ,he saith unto him1 ,yea1 ,lord2 thou knowest that ,i love thee4 ,he saith unto him1 ,feed my lambs4 ,he saith unto him again a second time1 ,simon1 son of ,john1 lovest thou me8 ,he saith unto him1 ,yea1 ,lord1 thou knowest that ,i love thee4 ,he saith unto him1 ,tend my sheep4 ,he saith unto him the third time1 ,simon1 son of ,john1 lovest thou me8 ,peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time1 ,lovest thou me8 ,and he said unto him1 ,lord1 thou knowest all things2 thou knowest that ,i love thee4 ,jesus saith unto him1 ,feed my sheep4 ,verily1 verily1 ,i say unto thee1 ,when thou wast young1 thou girdedst thyself1 and walkedst whither thou wouldest2 but when thou shalt be old1 thou shalt stretch forth thy hands1 and another shall gird thee1 and carry thee whither thou wouldest not4 ,now this he spake1 signifying by what manner of death he should glorify ,god4 ,and when he had spoken this1 he saith unto him1 ,follow me4 ,peter1 turning about1 seeth the disciple whom ,jesus loved following2 who also leaned back on his breast at the supper1 and said1 ,lord1 who is he that betrayeth thee8 ,peter therefore seeing him saith to ,jesus1 ,lord1 and what shall this man do8 ,jesus saith unto him1 ,if ,i will that he tarry till ,i come1 what is that to thee8 ,follow thou me4 ,this saying therefore went forth among the brethren1 that that disciple should not die3 yet ,jesus said not unto him1 that he should not die1 but1 ,if ,i will that he tarry till ,i come1 what is that to thee8 ,,the ,,appearance ,,to ,,the ,,eleven ,,on ,,the ,,mountain4 ,the eleven disciples went into ,galilee1 unto the mountain where ,jesus had appointed them4 ,and when they saw him1 they worshipped him2 but some doubted4 ,and ,jesus came to them and spake unto them1 saying1 ,all authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth4 ,go ye therefore1 and make disciples of all the nations1 baptizing them in the name of the ,father and of the ,son and of the ,holy ,spirit3 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever ,i commanded you3 and lo1 ,i am with you always1 even unto the end of the world4 ,,the ,,last ,,appearance ,,and ,,ascension4 ,and he said unto them1 ,these are my words which ,i spake unto you1 while ,i was yet with you1 that all things must needs be fulfilled1 which are written in the law of ,moses1 and the prophets1 and the psalms1 concerning me4 ,then opened he their mind1 that they might understand the scriptures2 and he said unto them1 ,thus it is written1 that the ,christ should suffer1 and rise again from the dead the third day2 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name unto all the nations1 beginning from ,jerusalem4 ,ye are witnesses of these things4 ,and behold1 ,i send forth the promise of my ,father upon you3 but tarry ye in the city1 until ye be clothed with power from on high4 ,and he led them out until they were over against ,bethany3 and he lifted up his hands1 and blessed them4 ,and it came to pass1 while he blessed them1 he parted from them1 and was carried up into heaven4 ,and they worshipped him1 and returned to ,jerusalem with great joy3 and were continually in the temple1 blessing ,god4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,many ,,other ,,signs ,,therefore ,,did ,,jesus ,,in ,,the ,,presence ,,of ,,the
