for interest cannot be surpassed4 ,it is one of the strangest things in the world that so many people have gotten the impression that a missionary meeting must be dull1 and that a missionary discourse must be uninteresting4 ,it is an impression that ought not to exist4 ,let sermons be preached4 ,let the thrilling1 soul-inspiring facts that go to make up the history of missions be made known and the impression will soon be driven out of existence4 ,brethren1 we invite you to glean in the great field of the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,there will be rich returns for you and your people and golden returns for us4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,test ,,applied4 ,when ,berea ,college was started1 in #aheh1 its students were all white4 ,the following year the question was raised1 ,what if colored students should apply8 ,one teacher voiced the sentiment of all when he said1 ,if any one made in ,god's image comes to get knowledge which will enable him to understand the revelation of ,god in ,jesus ,christ1 he cannot be rejected4 ,the simple declaration of that sentiment had the effect to make most of the students leave at the end of the term1 never to return4 ,the ,john ,brown raid1 happening soon after1 rendered the school still more unpopular1 and the war following a little later1 the school had to suspend altogether4 ,but when the war ended and1 in #ahfe1 the college opened its doors again1 there being no longer slavery1 the question of color soon came up for consideration4 ,in one of the by-laws to the constitution of the college was this statement3 ,the object of this college shall be to furnish the facilities for a thorough education to all persons of good moral character4 ,three colored youths applied for admission4 ,on examination they were found to be persons of good moral character4 ,there was only one thing to do4 ,they were promptly admitted4 ,what followed8 ,there were at the time seventy-five students in the college1 and we are told1 the morning that those three harmless youths walked in1 half the school walked out4 ,but some one will say3 ,that was at the close of the war1 when the feelings of our white brethren at the ,south were naturally very sensitive2 that time1 however1 has passed away4 ,we can now plant schools and churches on an anti-caste basis1 with open doors and welcome hands for colored people1 if they choose to come4 ,no such exhibition of race prejudice would now be made4 ,well1 let us see4 ,for several years past we have had our attention turned to the terrible destitution of the people in the mountain region of ,kentucky and places adjacent4 ,two years ago we sent a special missionary to labor among these people4 ,he made his headquarters at ,williamsburg1 the county seat of ,whitley ,county1 ,kentucky4 ,the town was sixty-seven years old1 yet it never had a church edifice2 nor had the county1 with a population of fourteen thousand1 ever had a church edifice finished and dedicated to the worship of ,almighty ,god4 ,there were very few schools1 and what few there were could not be considered schools by intelligent people4 ,our missionary went to work4 ,the people heard him gladly4 ,a new life came into their famished souls4 ,they rallied round him4 ,they built a beautiful church edifice4 ,an academy1 too1 was erected2 able and skilled teachers were put in charge4 ,the missionary did not confine himself to the town merely4 ,for miles up and down the valley he traveled1 preaching as he went4 ,wherever he came the people were roused and steps taken to have churches and schools planted4 ,but the church and the academy above referred to must be dedicated4 ,at the dedication this ,association was represented by ,assistant ,corresponding ,secretary ,powell1 by ,field ,superintendent ,roy and by ,rev4 ,dr4 ,wm4 ,h4 ,ward1 of the ,executive ,committee4 ,and dedicated they were to the glory of ,god for the maintenance and spread of a free gospel and ,christian learning4 ,special emphasis was placed upon the fact that over the entrance to these temples was written1 ,whosoever will may come4 ,does some one ask why that was specially emphasized8 ,because we were in a country where popular sentiment said1 ,into white churches and white schools there was a certain class who1 on account of the color of their skin1 would not be admitted4 ,when you are in a community that publicly indorses a wrong1 silence regarding that wrong is complicity4 ,under such circumstances1 to say nothing about it is the same thing as to sign your name to a document affirming the thing to be right4 ,to dedicate a ,christian church in ,new ,york ,city and say nothing about the evils of ,mormonism would be nothing strange1 but to dedicate a ,christian church in ,salt ,lake ,city and be silent as to what the teaching and the practice of that church was to be in regard to polygamy would be treason to the ,gospel4 ,we therefore made specially prominent at the dedication the broad principles on which our mission rested4 ,some said they were sorry to hear such things proclaimed2 others said nothing1 but feared2 while a few said1 ,that is right4 ,it is just as it ought to be4 ,the school started off with bright skies above and a broad distant view around4 ,the bell rung out its pealing calls1 and bright-eyed1 rosy-cheeked children and youth clambered up the hill side to horizon to horizon a deathly pall enshrouded the entire sky--and the cloud large enough to do all this was only the size of a black child's face6 ,whosoever will may come1 we had said4 ,did we mean it8 ,oh1 yes1 but it is hardly right to sacrifice the feelings of that whole school merely to gratify the wish of--a nigger4 ,did we mean it8 ,oh1 yes1 but it is hardly right to imperil the very existence of the school merely to take in that one poor1 despised and uninfluential colored child6 ,did we mean it8 ,oh1 yes1 but is it right1 is it wise1 to receive one when you know that by so doing you will lose twenty--perhaps more--to receive one whom you will have to help1 and lose twenty--or perhaps more--who can help you8 ,did we mean it8 ,oh1 yes1 certainly1 but would it not be better to reason with the applicant and show her that while we ourselves have no objection1 yet things being as they are1 she would really do more for her people by staying away than by insisting that she should be received8 ,why not take some such position as that8 ,we will have peace and harmony and prosperity4 ,we shall be able to tell our friends in the distance we are getting along swimmingly4 ,we great figure was the preacher--,john the ,baptist1 the ,apostles1 our blessed ,lord ,himself4 ,the salient feature in the ,new ,testament may be said to be a succession of great missionary sermons which are expositions of the ,gospel4 ,in the history of the ,christian ,church the great figure has been the preacher4 ,the ,church of ,god is the body of ,jesus ,christ4 ,as such she is the eye and ear1 she is the hands and feet of the ,lord1 but especially she is the voice of the ,lord4 ,doth not wisdom cry in all time8 ,did not the ,spirit when sent forth lift the voice declaring the great ,gospel message8 ,and when the ,church has had that possession of the ,spirit1 has it not been especially her inspiration to cry out with the ,gospel message8 ,the great figure in this ,association work in the past has been the teacher4 ,we have had a gifted line of men and women in this work1 and to them all honor be given4 ,it would be impossible for us to give them the honor which is their due2 but in the future the great figure is to be the missionary preacher1 the man who can reach masses of men with the ,gospel message4 ,we are lifting this race1 and what has been true in the past will be true in the future4 ,perhaps ,i can not better exhibit this subject in the little space allowed me than in noticing some of the traits which should characterize the missionary preacher1 and while the truth is general and applicable to all parties1 ,i trust that we may be under the direction of the ,spirit and take to heart these great traits we shall be looking for in the preacher of the future in the ,south4 ,the missionary preacher is a man who1 to be effective1 should be a man of spiritual morality1 a man of irreproachable character4 ,i presume the colored man has been maligned in the ,south1 as his character has so often been brought out among us4 ,one of our enthusiastic teachers was asked1 ,how many ,uncle ,toms do you find in the ,south8 ,and she replied1 ,about as many as there are in the ,north4 ,a truth was there that we ourselves may very well take4 ,there are three ways in which the ,gospel is published4 ,one is in the book1 one is by the voice1 and the third by the life4 ,the voice lies between the book and the life1 and the life is the great publication of the message1 and unless we have a voice of a man who is spiritually qualified by a holy life1 we have not a competent ,gospel preacher4 ,in speaking of this matter of morality1 we should have something more in view than natural morals--there is a spiritual morality4 ,we want the higher4 ,a man who has in himself the ,spirit of ,god1 produces this type of morality4 ,we can not canvass this subject by the motives of worldliness4 ,it takes two crosses to save the world--the cross of ,christ and the cross of the believer4 ,a ministerial brother said1 in speaking of certain ones1 that they had undergone a deplorable religious transformation1 that at one time they held the ,gospel of regeneration1 but they had come to love the ,gospel of recreation4 ,ah1 what a transformation has come over too many of our churches and the community in loving this form of worldliness6 ,it is a matter of great satisfaction that our schools in the ,south are doing such efficient work in this direction1 as reports indicate1 and as private information shows4 ,i quite lately had information from ,general ,armstrong touching this point of high morality that is developed in the school4 ,the young men and young women1 he said1 compare well with the young men and young women in our ,northern schools4 ,this is a matter of great satisfaction1 because the preacher of the future is to come out of these schools4 ,the second essential in the missionary preacher1 if he is to be successful1 is a mind which is spiritually illuminated1 a man who is intelligent in the truth4 ,i presume the great characteristic of the old-time preacher in the ,south is his ignorance1 and if we should select one point at which a change needs to take place1 it is at this point of instruction4 ,he needs to be intelligent4 ,now1 to these things ought to be added training in all branches of knowledge1 just as widely as possible1 but we must fix our attention especially upon one source of knowledge1 namely1 the ,word of ,god4 ,the missionary preacher needs to be a man established in the ,scriptures4 ,john the ,baptist grew in grace4 ,our blessed ,lord ,himself grew in grace4 ,the man who is to be effective as a preacher in elevating the world is a man who grows in grace4 ,what is grace8 ,it is the undeserved favor of ,god exhibited in the plan of salvation for the redemption of man4 ,and the first truths of that grace say simply1 but how grandly1 grow in grace2 we are to be ministers of grace2 to be masters of grace4 ,the minister in the ,south is to be a master of grace4 ,do you know how far it is away8 ,it seems but a step1 but oh1 what a work when we begin to comprehend the great things of ,god6 ,do you know the height1 depth and length of the great salvation of the love of ,god8 ,ezekiel tells us of the depth of the stream when he first came to it1 that to his apprehension the water came up to his foot1 but1 as he advanced1 it came to the ankle1 and the knee and the loin1 and then it was water to swim in1 a river that could not be passed over4 ,oh1 my brethren1 we need to understand these great things of ,god1 so that we may become masters of grace1 for if we do not1 the missionary preacher that comes up under our influence will not be thoroughly qualified for his duties4 ,then there is another quality2 the missionary preacher1 to be effective as a missionary1 must be1 not only a shining1 but like ,john also a burning light4 ,then nothing shall be concealed4 ,what does the ,scripture say in that psalm8 ,there is nothing hid from the light8 ,no2 ,there is nothing hid from the heat thereof4 ,we want a ,gospel preacher among those people who has a ,gospel heat from which nothing can be hid4 ,how many things we can say of this fuel6 ,we have spoken of the ,word of ,god4 ,the ,word of ,god is the light1 and it is the fuel for a fire4 ,our blessed ,saviour when ,he was on the way to ,emmaus with the ,disciples enkindled their hearts1 not by his personal presence2 but when he opened the ,scriptures1 then they testified1 ,did not our hearts burn within us8 ,that was what took place at ,pentecost4 ,the ,holy ,spirit did not bring the fuel that day1 but they had been gathering it as they spoke of ,christ1 and as they came together to offer prayers1 the ,holy ,spirit came1 and the ,word was a fire in their bones2 then fire came and kindled them1 and then came that wonderful effect4 ,sir ,james ,herschel tells us in a little story1 in fragments of his biography1 how after his telescopes became famous they were distributed quite widely through ,europe1 and when he published his great discovery1 he began to receive complaints4 ,men said to him1 in angry letters1 ,we do not see what you see4 ,in his response to them he said3 ,perhaps you do not take the care in your observations that ,i do1 and he spoke of one particular thing that is carefully noted4 ,do you take care1 he said1 of the matter of temperature8 ,the instrument with which ,i examine the stars must be of the temperature of the stars as nearly as may be1 and when ,i observe on a winter night ,i place my glass on the lawn at ,greenwich1 and let it stand there until the instrument comes to be of the temperature of the air4 ,but beyond that1 he said1 not only must my instrument be of the right temperature1 but ,i must be4 ,oftentimes1 he said1 ,i have been out in the winter air for two hours before ,i would open my glass1 because ,i must come to be of the same temperature as the instrument itself4 ,what a spiritual truth there is here6 ,god's ,word the instrument1 and the temperature that of the heavens4 ,but we must be of the temperature of that ,bible and that heavens6 ,oh1 for the heat of the ,gospel to be in the minister of ,christ wherever he stands1 and then there will be nothing hid from its searching power4 ,i think this subject is often presented in a way to confuse it4 ,we speak of heat in a way not to comprehend precisely what we want2 and let me touch upon the point which shows what ,i mean4 ,when the ,saviour was at the well with the woman1 it was the love in ,his heart from which she could not be hid4 ,what a lesson ,peter learned that day when our ,saviour1 in ,his great interview by the sea1 asked him3 ,lovest thou me8 and said1 ,feed my sheep and my lambs4 ,there was a lesson burned into his heart of the personal love of ,christ4 ,i heard ,mr4 ,sankey sing last week ,the ,ninety and ,nine1 and he prefaced it by saying that the old hymn was worn out4 ,i was sorry to hear him say that1 but there was one accent he gave in singing which was very affecting4 ,when one expostulates with the shepherd that he has ninety and nine with him1 he cries out3 ,it is my sheep4 ,i fancy when ,peter came to ,pentecost and saw those great crowds before him there was one element of preparation he needed1 and the ,saviour had taught him how to feed his sheep and feed his lambs1 and it lived so in his heart that nothing could be hid from it4 ,i am speaking too long on this matter4 ,but it is a great subject4 ,both are graduates of our college course and ,mr4 ,ousley has since studied theology at ,oberlin4 ,a letter from him1 written at ,cape ,town1 ,africa1 was read at our meeting4 ,since then one has been received from ,mrs4 ,ousley1 dated at ,durban1 ,natal1 which they had reached in safety and good health and spirits4 ,they were about to sail the next day for ,inhambane1 their final destination4 ,so as to locate them better we had at the meeting1 on our board1 a map of that station4 ,our society writes them once a month4 ,they are very dear to us and we hope they will do much good in ,africa4 ,mr4 ,ousley dedicated himself one ,sunday in the summer of #ahgh to that field of labor and has never swerved from his purpose4 ,the last part of the meeting was devoted to a season of prayer for
