missionaries4 ,notwithstanding the hard times1 our receipts from the churches and living donors are larger by several thousand dollars than they were at this time last year4 ,these facts are the indications of a living cause and an able constituency4 ,they call upon us to lift our heads in hope and to inspire one another to still greater activity1 and1 if need be1 to self-denial4 ,we have no legacies in sight1 and we certainly do not desire our friends to die4 ,our prayer is that they may live2 that they may live long4 ,apart from their gifts in money we desire the strength and the ,passion in all its forms of unbalanced feeling lay far beneath ,his holy life4 ,a righteous indignation against ,phariseeism ,he felt2 ,he was moved with compassion when ,he saw the people scattered abroad as sheep without a shepherd2 in numberless forms in the presence of sorrow and want ,his emotion was stirred1 but the machinations of wicked men against the establishment of righteousness1 ,he contemplated with imperturbable equanimity4 ,it was not merely that ,he had a strong faith that all such opposition was the imagination of a vain thing4 ,he knew that it was so4 ,it may not be given ,his disciples to walk so much by knowledge as did the ,master1 but where ,he leads1 they can follow in a faith that shall sustain them and give them triumph in every path of duty4 ,opposition may meet them4 ,difficulties may lie in the path4 ,evil men may oppose them1 and good men1 misinterpreting their motives and misunderstanding their work1 may misrepresent them4 ,but what matters it8 ,conscious in the strength that they are doing right1 they will work on unhindered and undisturbed4 ,christian virtue finds in its own development all the reward necessary to stimulate continuance in centuries of barbarism and two hundred and fifty years of slavery behind them1 they started out homeless1 landless1 moneyless and experienceless4 ,the ,new ,orleans ,exposition was to have exhibits from all lands3 ,asia1 with its millennium of transmitted achievements2 ,europe1 with its centuries of enlightened development2 the ,united ,states1 with their wonderful improvements on the best the world had produced1 were all to be there4 ,what show could the twenty-year-old freedmen make in such company8 ,the very idea of their attempting to put in an appearance would seem absurd4 ,but the colored people desired at least to stand up and be counted4 ,they determined to be there4 ,the entire gallery in one end of the immense ,government building was assigned them1 and the specimens of their skill more than filled it4 ,they came from nearly every ,state and ,territory in the ,union4 ,their exhibits represented almost every department of mechanical1 agricultural and artistic skill4 ,excellence in workmanship1 fertility in invention1 tastefulness in the fine arts1 were all displayed to a remarkable degree in the large collection4 ,southerners and ,northerners were alike astonished at what their eyes beheld4 ,those who thought that the negro has no higher mission than to be a hewer of wood and drawer of water1 were compelled either to change their minds or else to say they did not believe that the colored people did the work4 ,it was amusing to hear the remarks of some of the latter class1 as they looked at some beautiful specimens of negro handicraft or ingenuity4 ,it may interest the readers of the ,,missionary to glance at the great variety of lines along which negro ability put itself on exhibition4 ,examination papers from schools were very numerous1 showing proficiency in penmanship1 spelling1 arithmetic1 algebra1 geometry1 free drawing1 grammar and translations from the classics2 fine needlework of all kinds2 millinery2 dress-making1 tailoring2 portrait and landscape painting in oil1 water-colors and crayon2 photography2 sculpture2 models of steamboats1 locomotives1 stationary engines1 and railway cars2 cotton presses1 plows1 cultivators1 and reaping machines2 wagons1 buggies2 tools of almost all kinds1 from the hammer of the carpenter to the finely-wrought forceps of the dentist2 piano and organ 7both pipe and reed7 making2 carpentry1 cabinet-making2 upholstery2 tin-smithing2 black-smithing1 boot and shoe making2 basket and broom making2 pottery1 plain and glazed2 brick-making2 agricultural products1 including all the cereals and fruits raised in the country2 silk-worm culture2 fruit preserving2 flour from a mill1 and machinery from a foundry owned by a colored man2 patented inventions and improvements1 nearly all of them useful and practical1 were quite numerous2 drugs and medicines2 stationery1 printing and publishing4 ,some of the articles on exhibition are worthy of special mention--a black walnut pulpit1 in design and finish as beautiful and tasteful as any church might wish2 a sofa finely upholstered1 and the covering embroidered with artistically-executed needlework1 showing four prominent events in the life of ,toussaint l',ouverture2 a chandelier1 very beautiful in design and finely finished2 a complete set of dentist's instruments1 in polish and finish remarkable2 a little engine1 made by a silversmith of ,knoxville1 who was a slave1 and who has become a skilled workman of local reputation4 ,he never worked in a shop till he had one of his own4 ,he learned the use of tools without any instruction4 ,these articles would certainly merit attention1 even if put in competition with similar specimens of the very best workmanship4 ,neither the negroes nor their friends have any reason to regret that an exhibit was made4 ,it was in every sense of the word creditable4 ,it marks a progress simply wonderful1 when all the circumstances are taken into the account4 ,it is prophetic of a very hopeful future4 ,it demonstrates that the negro race can enter every profession and calling in which the white man is found4 ,it proclaims in tones that no one should misunderstand1 that he who writes or speaks of the colored people should be careful how he pronounces judgment in regard to their capacity4 ,they should be given a white man's chance4 ,no trade nor occupation should be closed against them4 ,open doors should welcome to honorable competition1 white and black alike4 ,let this be so1 and in less than half a century there will not be a trade1 nor profession1 nor calling1 in which black men will not be found in the front4 ,there will be preachers and professors1 and editors1 and physicians1 and lawyers1 and statesmen1 and teachers1 and bankers1 and business men1 and artisans1 and mechanics and farmers1 of ,african descent1 of whom1 as brethren1 the very greatest of white men will not need to be ashamed4 ,let writers on the negro stop theorizing about his capacity for this or that calling1 and unite in demanding that he have a fair chance to become what ,god has made him capable of becoming4 ,it is wrong1 it is wicked for men who by voice and pen influence public sentiment1 to conclude that because the negro is now a waiter1 a boot-black1 a barber1 a laborer1 that therefore he cannot be anything else1 or even that he cannot probably be anything else4 ,by the very force of circumstances he has been compelled to occupy these positions4 ,by an unjust public sentiment he has been shut out from even an opportunity to prove his capacity to stand beside his white brother in every calling4 ,public sentiment should be reformed at this point2 and the colored people's exhibition of what they have achieved in the short space of twenty years1 in spite of opposition1 and in spite of lack of opportunity1 assures us that if they are permitted they will contribute no small share in securing the reformation4 ,we advise all leaders of public sentiment who do not desire twenty-five or thirty years hence to be found eating their words of to-day1 or explaining how it was that they came to be on ground so untenable1 to heed the lessons of this ,exposition1 and range themselves with those who look at facts1 and who recognize the prophetic power of facts1 and heartily accept the prophecy1 even if this prophecy run counter to what have been their fancies4 speeches not only complimented the colored people on the progress they had made1 but assured them of the hearty sympathy and co-operation of all good people in the ,south4 ,the ,rev4 ,a4 ,e4 ,p4 ,albert1 a graduate of our ,straight ,university1 represented the colored people4 ,the newspapers published his speech in full4 ,we have read it with much interest4 ,it is a speech of considerable power4 ,it is an honor to the man1 to his race and to the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 99 99 99 99 99 ,our ,student's ,letter this month is from ,talladega ,college4 ,the memories it portrays are not pleasant1 but it is fitting to remember the pit out of which we have been digged4 ,the darkness of the picture makes the present opportunities and privileges of the colored people to shine out all the brighter4 involves4 ,this seems1 at first sight1 a simple and easy1 albeit a rather rough1 answer4 ,and so the ,exclusion bill became a law4 ,but it is almost certain that there are more ,chinese in ,america to-day because of that law than there would have been without it4 ,they came in such great numbers after the law was enacted and before it went into operation that 7as ,i think7 the decrease in immigration since that date has not as yet offset that increase4 ,for nearly three years on our shore our ,king ,canute has sat in his royal chair forbidding the tide to rise4 ,as long as ebb-tide lasts his authority seems to be respected1 and the problem of these diurnal encroachments of the sea upon the land seems to be solved4 ,but when the time for flood-tide comes again1 ,canute will have to move his chair1 his mandates to the contrary notwithstanding4 ,already1 if rumor is to be believed1 a profitable business is conducted upon ,puget ,sound in smuggling ,chinese from ,vancouver's ,island to our forbidden soil4 ,certain it is that many ,chinese1 failing to get tickets at ,hong ,kong for ,san ,francisco1 buy them to ,victoria4 ,already it becomes a serious question what fence can be built along our northern frontier so close1 so strong1 so high that no ,chinese can anywhere climb over1 or crawl under1 or work through4 ,mexico wants the ,chinese1 we hear4 ,how far is it from the northern line of ,mexico to the southern line of ,california and ,arizona8 ,and once across that line our ,chinese invaders1 coming slyly one by one1 have won the fight and go and come at their own pleasure4 ,exclusion has not solved this problem1 and it is safe to add that1 as it should not1 so it never will4 ,for this policy is in contradiction to the vital principles of our national existence2 and either it must be abandoned1 or sooner or later this contradiction will develop into conflict irrepressible4 ,those vital principles are two3 ,all men created equal1 and ,all men endowed with certain inalienable rights1 etc4 ,our fathers counted them to be self-evident1 and placed them as twin pillars in our temple of liberty4 ,now1 a nation cannot knock out its own foundation stones1 cannot defy the laws of its own organic life without becoming divided against itself2 and in the conflict ensuing1 either its vital principles will be reaffirmed and rehabilitated1 or else the nation dies4 ,we have had one lesson at this point1 and we ought not to need another for a dozen centuries4 ,exclusion is only a make-shift of the politicians1 not the offspring of real statesmanship4 ,it has not solved the problem1 and it never will4 ,what then shall we do8 ,educate and ,christianize these heathen1 we reply3 ,so you will make them to be ,chinese no longer1 but ,americans4 ,this is the right answer1 but1 alas1 how much easier said than done6 ,the undertaking1 hard enough at first1 grows harder1 in some respects1 as the years roll on4 ,one added difficulty is the wider diffusion of these strangers over our whole country4 ,the prejudice which their peculiarities excite is thus extended1 while the number to be reached in any one locality is diminished4 ,work for the ,chinese ought now to be prosecuted1 not simply in ,sunday schools1 but in ,mission schools1 kept in session every evening and alt through the year in most of the principal cities of the whole ,union1 as well as on the ,pacific ,coast4 ,but the outward and visible encouragements will be smaller1 because each ,mission finds its particular field reduced in size4 ,another added difficulty is in an increased and deepened antagonism on the part of the great mass of ,chinese to real ,christianity4 ,multitudes have seen enough of the true light to reject it2 and having rejected1 now to hate it4 ,oh1 it drives one back to ,god in an agony of mingled longing and despair to see this mighty multitude that will not come and be saved1 drifting along in darkness and wretchedness through this life to the blackness of darkness beyond6 ,and this is intensified by the thought of the children now quite numerous in our ,chinese communities4 ,we know to what the daughters are destined4 ,we know what it is that gives them1 in this country1 a special money value2 and as to the sons1 one can scarcely conceive circumstances more perilous than those in which they are placed4 ,breathing our free ,american air1 entering readily into the ,young ,america spirit1 they will not brook the harsh discipline which1 in their native land1 would have been submissively and perhaps with profit accepted4 ,at the same time1 the parents ill understand that discipline of love which adjusts itself to these new circumstances1 and when it can no longer compel1 succeeds in wooing and winning and molding aright the boyish heart4 ,demons incarnate1 both ,american and ,chinese1 tempt these boys1 while they are unprotected by any reverence either for the ancestors and idols of their own people or for the ,american ,god whom ,americans by their conduct so cruelly belie4 ,and this suggests another added difficulty3 the contrast which our ,chinese ,christians cannot but observe between the precepts of the ,bible1 the example of ,christ1 the exhortations of those who led them to ,jesus1 and the practices of multitudes of ,american professors of religion4 ,and1 too often1 they are led to do as we do1 and not as we say4 ,while at the same time the indifference of many professed ,christians to the salvation of this ,chinese1 and the attitude of many churches toward those already converted1 loads the problem down with difficulties such as might well drive us to despair4 ,but1 no2 nothing shall drive us to despair4 ,this problem must be solved4 ,this mountain mass of heathenism must be--not removed and cast into the sea1 but transformed into the mountain of the ,lord's house1 and made an element--an element of untold value and efficiency--in our ,american ,zion4 ,let us have faith as the grain of mustard ,,university1 ,,nashville1 ,,tenn4 ,a ,,class ,,of ,,fifteen ,,graduated ,,from ,,college4 ,anniversary week at ,fisk ,university is closed4 ,its alternate shower and sunshine have fairly represented the rejoicing and the sadness that always come with this harvest time of the year4 ,the week began on the evening of ,friday1 ,may #bb1 with the exhibition of the ,senior ,preparatory ,class1 and was followed by the ,baccalaureate and ,missionary sermons on ,sunday1 the anniversaries of the literary societies and the alumni association1 and the graduating exercises of the ,normal ,department on ,monday1 ,tuesday and ,wednesday1 and the final great day of the feast1 the ,college ,commencement1 on ,thursday1 ,may #bh4 ,this programme has become so fixed that to go over it in detail would be monotonous2 let us rather note a few of the significant and interesting facts that belong particularly to this anniversary week4 ,the comparatively large size of the classes entering and leaving college has been one marked feature and a source of great encouragement4 ,thirteen young men and three young women were received into the ,freshman class1 and a few days later thirteen young men and two young women1 having completed four years of college work1 took the degree of ,b4 ,a4 ,this is more than double the largest class ever before graduated from ,fisk1 and while the increase in numbers cannot yet be sustained with regularity from year to year1 it does show a growth in our work and a strengthening of purpose on the part of our young people4 ,in #ahgd1 a class of six young men entered college1 but only two ever got beyond the threshold3 the others lost heart and purpose2 of the present class three have fallen by the hand of death within the four years and only three have dropped out for other causes4 ,commencement day revealed in the tone of the graduating orations a moral earnestness and uprightness of principle that called forth the commendation of our stranger guests4 ,the best record of the class1 however1 is in the influence its members have exerted in the school during the whole of their ,senior year4 ,it may be remembered that a year ago the ,alumni ,association adopted a plan by which1 beginning three years after graduation1 at least one per cent4 of the earnings of each member is to be appropriated to an endowment fund for ,fisk ,university4 ,whenever the sum reaches #a1jjj1 it is to be devoted to some chair in the ,university4 ,this year the ,treasurer reported #adj on hand4 ,the beginning seems small1 but who can tell to what the stream may grow8 ,part of the ,alumni anniversary was given up to a memorial service for one who1 after six years of faithful work among her people1 has died within the year4 ,on the evening devoted to the ,normal ,department1 ,prof4 ,salisbury was expected to address us on some educational topic4 ,in his absence1 ,prof4 ,smith1 of the chair of ,greek in ,vanderbilt ,university1 kindly filled the place and gave us an excellent address on ,thomas ,carlyle4 ,prof4 ,smith is of ,southern birth1 but has manifested a cordial friendliness and an interest that has led him to really investigate the work of ,fisk ,university4 ,on ,commencement ,day1 ,rev4 ,r4 ,g4 ,hutchins1 ,d4 ,d41 of ,minneapolis1 ,minn41 honored us with his presence and with an address1 both wise and eloquent1 on ,sublime ,motives1 holding up three as especially worthy to prompt to action3 responsibility for the architecture of our own character1 responsibility for the development of latent moral power1 and the conservation of moral forces4 ,few who heard it will forget the solemn charge given to the graduating class by ,president ,cravath1 illustrated by an incident1 as told by the ,rev4 ,sam4 ,jones1 of the battle of ,nashville4 ,general ,hood saw a ,federal battery making dreadful havoc in his army1 and sent to a subordinate general a messenger1 saying1 ,give him my compliments1 and tell him ,i ask at his hands the battery in the ,locust ,grove4 ,the general was in the thick of the battle and could not be found4 ,the same message was sent to another with the same result4 ,finally to a third he sent the messenger1 saying1 ,give him my love1 and tell him ,i ask at his hands the battery in the ,locust ,grove4 ,the battery was speedily taken and the message of affection returned to ,general ,hood4 ,so are these young people sent out with the love of teachers and friends1 to capture the batteries that are dealing moral death to this people4 ,after the degree of ,b4 ,a4 had been conferred on the fifteen graduates1 that of ,m4 ,a4 was given to fourteen former graduates1 who for three years or more have been engaged in scholarly employments4 ,to add to the interest of ,commencement1 ,gen4 ,fisk arrived the evening before1 and closed the public exercises of ,thursday with an address1 whose pleasantry made every one forget the fatigue of five consecutive hours of speech-making4 ,several members of the ,legislature1 now in extra session in the ,capitol1 were present both at the ,commencement exercises and at the collation which followed4 ,a new and interesting feature of this anniversary was the part taken by the ,girls' ,industrial ,department4 ,a basket of cake made by members of the cooking class graced each table at the ,commencement dinner and was by general consent pronounced excellent4 ,in the ,assembly ,room of ,jubilee ,hall were displayed various garments and household articles neatly made by the sewing classes4 ,nothing has been said about examinations2 they are like the bread of our daily meals1 always expected and very important4 ,a more thorough examination than usual was given the classes in drawing and in vocal music4 ,one exercise in the latter examination was the singing at sight of a tune1 in four parts1 composed by a member of the class4 ,our halls are already deserted2 nothing holds our students after ,commencement3 they scatter at once for work1 and within a few weeks1 in at least half a dozen ,states1 miniature ,fisk ,universities will be in operation4 ,,anna ,m4 ,,cahill4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,anniversary ,,at ,,hampton ,,institute1 ,,virginia4 ,in beauty1 interest and enthusiasm ,hampton anniversary days abate nothing as years go on4 ,the seventeenth anniversary exercises were held on ,may #ba1 with a graduating class of forty-two1 of whom five were ,indians4 ,visitors were present from ,north and ,south1 ,east and ,west1 and such expressions as ,the half was not told me6 and ,why didn't ,i bring my wife8 were frequent1 as usual4 ,of the morning examinations1 one of the most interesting was a general exercise conducted by the chaplain1 in review of the current news of the world1 which is daily read and discussed with the students4 ,victor ,hugo1 ,french and ,english politics1 the ,afghan trouble1 ,russia and ,nihilism1 ,irish ,nationalists1 ,france and ,china1 ,england and ,egypt1 were touched in the questions1 and the answers and general interest showed the value of this daily exercise4 ,in the ancient history class1 printed questions were shuffled and distributed among the students1 and question and answer were spoken out promptly by each scholar1 giving an attractive quickness and vivacity to the recitation4 ,the class of little ,indian geographers stood before a table on which was a miniature ,united ,states made of sand1 with its ,eastern elevations1 its great central plains1 and its high ,western ranges4 ,a thread of blue worsted1 put in place by the young world-builders1 simulated the ,mississippi1 while cities 7in the guise of white buttons7 sprang up with a rapidity unknown even in the great ,west4 ,the practice-teaching class is always of especial interest and significance1 as over ninety per cent of ,hampton's students devote themselves to teaching as their life mission4 ,a dozen little bright-eyed1 brown-faced primaries from the ,butler training school received a geography lesson from one of the senior girls1 criticised by her class-mates4 ,its grand finale was a miniature volcanic eruption1 creating a sensation among the ,butler mites4 ,the industrial exhibits and the training shops1 with their ,negro and ,indian apprentices1 attracted interested attention1 as usual4 ,the emotions of anniversary day culminated in the afternoon exercises1 in which were several incidents of unusual interest4 ,the pretty and graceful salutatorian1 fair as most of her hearers1 was introduced as a young representative of the family of faithful ,mary ,peake1 who1 just escaped from slavery herself1 taught the first contraband school at ,hampton4 ,this introduction roused the war-memories of ,rev4 ,dr4 ,strieby1 who1 greeting the young girl as she stepped on the platform1 told the story of the first missionary sent down to ,old ,point by the ,american ,missionary ,association1 his reception by the contrabands as an angel of deliverance1 and his first school1 opened ,sept4 #ag1 #ahfa1 with ,mary ,peake as its teacher1 till she gave up her life in the work for her people4 ,the pastor's class was represented by a ,baptist minister from ,hampton1 who gave an account of the ,old and ,new ministry1 somewhat characteristic of both4 ,this pastor's class has become an interesting feature of ,hampton1 with a mission of peace and good-will to both races and all sects and sections4 ,now in its second year1 it numbers1 as pupils1 #ag colored pastors of ,hampton and vicinity4 ,baptist and ,methodist2 and as teachers ,rev4 ,mr4 ,frissell1 chaplain1 and ,rev4 ,mr4 ,tolman1 ex-chaplain of the school1 ,northern ,congregationalist ministers1 with ,miss ,alice ,bacon1 who thus worthily wears her venerated fathers mantle1 and the ,southern white ministers from ,hampton1 ,episcopal1 ,baptist and ,methodist1 in unity of spirit that is verily a good and a pleasant thing to see4 ,the studies are the ,bible and ,bible history1 pastoral theology and composition4 ,in cultivating better understanding and kindly relations between these colored and white neighbors1 and the relations of the school with both1 as well as in helping meet the great need of an intelligent ministry1 this pastor's class is doing important work4 ,some of its members board at the school1 working their way in part like the other students1 sometimes entering their classes4 ,some are helped to come by their congregations1 who appreciate the opportunity4 ,a handsome gold medal1 presented by ,mr4 ,w4 ,j4 ,demorest1 of ,new ,york ,city1 was awarded to ,harris ,barrett1 of the senior class1 for excellence in the junior elementary studies1 the three ,r's1 geography1 grammar and spelling1 in which the whole class were examined for the prize without special review1 only one falling below an average of #ej per cent4 on all1 and five averaging above #ij--;a better showing than some ,northern college seniors could make1 ,i fear4 ,as usual1 some of the school's former graduates returned to tell the story of their labors1 and nearly fifty were present on the invitation yearly renewed to all4 ,the valedictorian was the youngest of a family of one sister and four brothers1 children of a minister1 who have graduated at the school1 the last two with the honor of the valedictory4 ,the ,indian graduates were represented by two of their number1 a young man of the ,sac and ,fox tribe1 ,indian ,territory1 who gave his own reasons for claiming and desiring citizenship for his people1 which were3 #ast1 that the ,indian also is a child of the ,father2 #b;d1 that he was once owner of the land2 #c;d1 that without this protection and help he must perish2 #dth1 that with it he can become a useful member of the nation1 a man among men4 ,an ,indian girl plead eloquently for the ,indian woman1 and protested against the use of savage as a synonym of ,indian1 since there are also yellow savages1 black savages and white savages4 ,the representations of the past1 present and future of ,indian life will not soon be forgotten by those who saw them4 ,the past's barbaric glories were typified by a tall young brave and ,indian girl in the beautiful dress of the wilderness4 ,they stood silent1 like a vision of the ancient days1 while their story was told4 ,the present's pathos was represented by ,lo the very poor ,indian and squaw in shabby blankets1 bewailing--as their ,indian interpreter explained--the loss of lands and buffalo1 asking where to go next--white man everywhere2 the future's hope by a promising pair of ,hampton students1 able to speak for themselves1 work for themselves and teach their people1 with their white brethren's help1 in the ,christian's road4 ,as the three groups stood in striking tableau--a visible embodiment of truth which ,i wish every white citizen of the ,united ,states could have seen and taken to heart--their comrades of the ,indian school rose behind them1 and started a ,dakota hymn1 recognized by the melody as ,from ,greenland's ,icy ,mountains1 or1 as interpreted to ,indian understanding1 ,from the very distant cold land--from the hot land far away4 ,as the plaintive strain died away1 it was taken up in ,english in the richer chorus of their colored schoolmates1 and the whole audience1 rising1 joined in the grand third verse1 ,shall we whose souls are lighted1 with effect not to pass from their hearts4 ,diplomas were presented by ,rev4 ,dr4 ,strieby1 vice-president of the ,board of ,trustees1 to the graduating class of seventeen colored and three ,indian young women1 and twenty colored and two ,indian young men1 #db in all4 ,eloquent addresses were made also by ,rev ,dr4 ,mc,vickar of ,philadelphia1 and ,rev4 ,dr4 ,armstrong of ,norfolk1 imprisoned once by ,general ,butler because he would pray for ,jefferson ,davis1 but now thanking ,god for the new order1 and rejoicing in ,negro education4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,gregory ,,institute1 ,,wilmington1 ,n4 ,c4 ,the year at ,gregory ,institute1 as usual1 has been a busy one1 both in school and out4 ,as a worthy colored member of our church expressed it1 ,we are tormented with ,christian work at ,wilmington4 ,we have had this year a total enrollment of #bhd pupils1 and the percentage of attendance has never been greater4 ,the pupils have1 as a rule1 worked well1 and in many cases the progress has been very marked4 ,while we are not completely satisfied with the results1 yet there has been very much to encourage our labors4 ,the ,lord has been merciful in keeping the workers in good health1 and there has been no death and but few cases of sickness among the pupils4 ,the last week was taken up with examinations1 both oral and written1 and in perfecting arrangements for the anxiously looked-for event among our people1 the closing exhibition4 ,such a clamoring for tickets one never heard4 ,of course1 not one-fourth asked for could be issued1 for lack of room2 but1 as far as possible1 the parents were admitted4 ,although a thunder-storm1 lasting about an hour1 came up just as the doors were opened1 the people continued to pour in until the hall was as full as an egg1 upwards of #ejj finding seats4 ,the programme1 which was a long and varied one1 was carried out without any drawback whatever1 thanks to the untiring efforts of the teachers and of ,mr4 and ,mrs4 ,dodge1 who all planned so well to make it a success4 ,for three and one-half hours the audience gave the closest attention1 and the comments since have been very flattering4 ,several1 including some ,northerners1 have declared it to be the best exhibition they ever attended4 ,it would tire you to read the entire programme1 so ,i will mention and describe briefly only a few of the pieces1 though all were as creditably rendered as if it were a white school1 with the singing perhaps better4 ,the pupils1 without exception1 acquitted themselves nobly1 and their neat appearance was worthy of special mention4 ,you would have been pleasantly entertained had you witnessed the ,missionary ,colloquy1 in which #bj girls1 some taken from each department of the school1 took part4 ,first came a girl bearing the ,american flag and representing ,america1 who spoke1 and was then followed by another girl with a ,bible1 representing ,christianity4 ,next came singly nine girls in costume1 each to represent a heathen nation1 and making an earnest plea for the ,gospel4 ,then followed a band of nine little ,american missionary workers1 each stepping to the front and telling how she had earned her money which she was about to give to the noble cause4 ,after dropping her gift in a basket held by ,america1 she repeated these words3 ,o happy1 happy child am ,i1 to serve the ,lord of earth and sky2 then taking her place1 another came forward in the same way until all had spoken4 ,america now hands her basket1 with its treasure1 to ,christianity1 whom she addresses2 then both turn and address the heathen in concert4 ,in the time1 missionary hymns were sweetly sung by the girls1 and the piece1 as presented1 was one of the finest ,i ever saw4 ,the doll drill was another interesting part of the evening's entertainment4 ,the little primary girls went through the different evolutions with almost military precision1 eliciting rounds of applause4 ,so ,i might name many pieces of almost equal interest1 but suffice it for me to mention further only the closing4 ,this was ,the ,cross and ,crown1 consisting of tableaux and recitations taken mostly from ,the ,cross-,bearer4 ,the time occupied in this was fully #de minutes2 and although the hour was so late1 our audience did not fail to appreciate this beautiful piece4 ,several of the older people being asked which piece they liked best1 replied1 ,i believe ,i liked the one with the angel best4 ,a very important part of the evening's work must not be omitted from mention4 ,this was the presentation of certificates to the graduating class on the completion of the ,elementary ,normal ,course ending with the #ajth year or grade4 ,the members of this class1 one young man and two young ladies1 have been reared up in our school1 and would be a credit to any school4 ,this is the first graduation from the course2 and although the class is small1 it has incited others to say1 ,i mean to stick to the school until ,i can stand where they did4 ,we think the entertainment was filled with sermons1 and we trust that the influence produced may be all for good4 ,,geo4 ,a4 ,,woodard4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,religious ,,interest ,,in ,,talladega4 ,the second ,sabbath in ,may was a notable day with our college church at ,talladega4 ,it was a feast of ingathering4 ,as early as eight o'clock a band of young men assembled on the banks of ,talladega ,creek1 that three of their number might be immersed4 ,it was a lovely spring morning1 and the green banks1 the running waters1 the sweet air1 the bright sunshine1 the hymns1 the prayers1 the remarks of the pastor1 and the ,sacrament itself 7administered by ,rev4 ,spencer ,snell1 the pastor having had a congestive chill the preceding week1 and being forbidden to go into the water7 were full of solemnity and sweet instruction4 ,two hours later we met again in the college chapel4 ,one of the most pressing needs of this church is a house of worship4 ,there has not been1 rain or shine1 since ,i came here1 a ,sabbath congregation that was not too large for our chapel4 ,growth is impossible4 ,how it will be during the college vacation1 ,i cannot say2 but during this college year it has always been uncomfortably crowded1 and every ,sabbath has overflowed up on to the platform4 ,this morning all seats were filled and extra benches occupied4 ,the ,lord's table was spread for ,his people1 and after a sermon from the text1 ,how can this man give us his flesh to eat8 forty were received into the fellowship of the church and welcomed to the table4 ,of these1 thirty were baptized by sprinkling4 ,to those acquainted with the ways and prejudices of these people1 the fact that we sprinkled thirty1 while we immersed only three 7these three were mature men71 will be full of significance4 ,none others asked to be immersed1 or suggested it4 ,this addition to our church embraced about one-third of the number professing conversion during our recent series of meetings1 conducted by ,brother ,field4 ,others will come to us1 but many who are students here will join the churches at their homes4 ,the success of those meetings1 reaching as they did every student in the college buildings1 with a single exception1 was so notable that a word as to the manner in which they were conducted may be of interest4 ,the beginning of the extra meetings was providentially postponed more than once4 ,they did not begin with the coming of the new pastor in the fall1 nor with the week of prayer1 nor with the day of prayer for colleges4 ,these occasions were all used1 but our extra meetings did not begin until the desire for them and the feeling of our great need of the ,divine blessing had grown strong in the church1 nor until they had been talked and prayed over1 prepared and planned for4 ,the meetings were held for a special purpose4 ,they were for the salvation of the students of the ,college4 ,students and church members1 teachers1 professors1 president and pastor--we all felt this truth4 ,but when every member of the ,college who felt that he was not a ,christian1 was asked to write his or her name on a slip of paper1 and put it into the contribution basket at the chapel door when coming into the first meeting--and lest any should fail1 from any cause1 to give us his own name1 every student was asked to furnish the name of any unsaved fellow-student of whom he knew--the real object sought in the meetings was brought home to every member of the ,college and ,church4 ,when we had the list of names 7with hardly an exception they furnished their own names71 we were vividly reminded of the individuals for whom we were working and praying1 and they knew1 every one1 that we were definitely working and praying for them4 ,this gave a feeling of practical1 concentrated work1 such as seldom attends such meetings4 ,excepting this1 there were no unusual means employed4 ,the truth was very earnestly and simply preached4 ,immediate decision for ,christ was pressed4 ,personal efforts were conscientiously made by teachers and students4 ,little prayer meetings1 where from two to a dozen met for special prayer1 were frequent1 and the ,lord blessed all the means used4 ,since the close of the protracted meeting1 each ,sabbath-school class has had its own weekly prayer meeting--a means of great good4 ,also a general young ,christians' prayer meeting has been held weekly4 ,in it effort has been made1 not only to lead these new converts to take part in prayer and conference1 but to instruct them upon some points too often neglected4 ,those who on this day united with the church could each1 ,i think1 give an intelligent statement of reasons why they should unite with the church2 and1 in so uniting1 why they gave public assent to a confession of faith1 and why they joined in covenant with ,god and his people4 ,,mason ,,noble4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,letter ,,from ,,rev4 ,j4 ,h4 ,,parr1 ,,austin1 ,,texas4 ,marked revivals have been in progress in all the colored churches of the city4 ,with all the noise and superstition1 we cannot doubt that there are not a few genuine conversions4 ,and yet1 while our students attend these meetings only to a limited extent1 the influence upon them tends to interfere with our religious work4 ,last week it was my privilege to attend the meeting of the ,north ,texas ,association1 held at ,cleburne4 ,tillotson church1 on application1 was cordially admitted to membership4 ,the same cordiality and courtesy were extended to ,brother ,mc,lean1 late of ,talladega ,college1 who applied for membership in his own behalf4 ,rev4 ,j4 ,w4 ,roberts1 representing the colored church of ,dallas1 was also present4 ,the dignified1 scholarly bearing of both these brethren won for them golden opinions from all who listened to their reports and remarks4 ,not a few of those who were present at the various sessions were ,southerners1 but apparently none the less interested on that account4 ,it was my fortune to be entertained by an ex-slaveholder1 who served in the ,confederate army through the war1 but who nevertheless is a warm friend of the ,congregational church in his town1 and contributes to its support4 ,the moderator and scribe of the association1 seated side by side through the meetings1 presented a striking contrast4 ,the first was a business man1 born in ,new ,england1 quick1 keen1 decisive and energetic1 an officer in the ,union army through the war1 since that time engaged in business in ,texas1 now the possessor of a large fortune1 and thoroughly identified with1 and enthusiastic concerning1 the material and spiritual interests of his adopted ,state4 ,the second was the pastor of the leading ,congregational ,church of the ,state1 born in the ,south1 educated for the law1 a soldier in the ,confederate army1 for a time almost a wreck morally and physically1 but now1 by the grace of ,god1 clothed and in his right mind1 dignified1 magnetic1 an earnest1 reverent student of the ,bible1 an able preacher and a beloved pastor4 ,thus1 with representatives of the ,north and the ,south1 the ,east and the ,west1 the white race and the black1 ,america1 ,sweden and ,ireland1 we had at least one marked feature of the ,pentecost4 ,but aside from that1 the manifest presence of the ,spirit1 and the consequent harmony and good-fellowship1 rendered our meeting in a still more important degree like that season which was the beginning of such a wonderful regeneration in the history of the world4 ,it may be accepted1 ,i doubt not1 as one of the signs of the regeneration that is going on in the ,south1 which is less wonderful only in the fact of being local rather than world-wide4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,old ,,commissary ,,building4 ,we held a series of revival meetings at ,south ,williamsburgh1 in the old commissary building4 ,wish some of the good people of the ,north1 who meet in churches and chapels1 plastered and nicely warmed1 and comfortably seated1 could have dropped in upon us and spent an hour4 ,of course1 they would have had the back-ache and cold feet1 and1 perhaps1 carried away a flea or two1 even in ,march1 but they would have gone home saying1 ,if people can meet in such a place1 some refined1 intelligent ladies even1 and continue to go night after night1 ,i ought to be very1 very willing to go to my church whenever the ,lord calls a meeting and my presence and voice are necessary4 ,but that you may appreciate the contrast with your pleasant place of meeting1 let me take you to the old commissary building4 ,it's a box-house2 that is1 it's made of boards set upright and nailed at the bottom and middle and top to joists4 ,over this crazy structure sets a roof made of long oaken shingles hewn with the broad axe4 ,step inside of the building1 which will hold #abe people1 and see the whole construction4 ,rough boards with the curve of the circular saw on them and now dingy with smoke1 make the sides2 oaken shingles black with smoke1 slope above4 ,a cannon stove sends most of its smoke through a rusty pipe up through a piece of sheet iron to the air4 ,the sparks1 and now and then a star1 shine through about the pipe4 ,newspapers pasted over the widest cracks on the sides of the room keep out the heaviest drafts4 ,i remember one night when it was snowing 7even here1 in ,march71 a flurry of wind brought down a glistening shower on the shoulders of the congregation4 ,the roof usually turns water1 however4 ,please stand here by the door and talk to the people4 ,feet get cold8 ,i don't wonder4 ,the door was made an inch and a half too short4 ,you ask why in the name of health don't you fix it8 ,well1 just sit there against the wall4 ,you sit down1 and a projecting horizontal
