,congregational1 the latter having its excellent native pastor and an outlying chapel where the native deacons conduct meetings in turn2 they have recently1 to the number of fifty1 taken up land under the homestead laws and now own them in fee simple4 ,there are three boarding schools on the reservation1 one sustained by the ,american ,missionary ,association and in the charge of the ,rev4 ,a4 ,l4 principal4 ,the work in all these schools is admirable4 ,the children are neat1 intelligent1 attractive1 orderly1 and studious1 and while not as far advanced nor as quick1 will compare favorably with the children of schools among white people4 ,the development of ,indian character under these ,christianizing influences was remarkably shown in a visit to one of the cottages on the mission4 ,here dwell one of the native teachers1 her mother and grandmother4 ,the aged grandmother in her whole appearance bespoke the wild ,indian4 ,gray and bent with age1 she loved best to sit on the floor in a corner1 after the fashion of her people4 ,the mother1 a comely matron of perhaps forty-five1 was evidently more cultivated1 was lady-like in her appearance1 and had lines of thoughtfulness on her thin face4 ,the work of civilization had made great advance in her4 ,but the daughter1 a young lady of eighteen1 well educated1 knowing only the ways of civilization1 was as thoroughly refined and bright people are recognized as citizens and are voters4 ,they have a neat chapel1 a native pastor1 sustain admirable prayer-meetings--a woman's prayer-meeting among them--and live good reputable lives4 ,in this spot and at ,santee ,agency the ,indian is seen at his best4 ,life and property are respected1 the land is fairly tilled1 the homes are happy1 intelligence is general1 and religion is the universal motive-power4 ,illustration3 ,,wigwams ,,among ,,the ,,sioux4 ,on the west side of the ,missouri in ,dakota lies the great ,sioux ,reservation1 containing #h1jjj ,indians at the ,pine ,ridge ,agency1 nearly #h1jjj at the ,rosebud ,agency1 #a1ejj of the ,lower ,brule ,indians1 #c1jjj along the ,cheyenne ,river and northward1 and nearly #d1jjj on the ,standing ,rock ,agency4 ,it was my fortune to visit a number of villages on the ,cheyenne1 ,morrow1 and ,grand ,rivers and at ,standing ,rock4 ,the ,indians at these places are all wild--that is1 still wear blankets1 breech-cloths1 and leggings1 feathers and geegaws1 do little toward cultivating the land1 and are ignorant heathen4 ,a ,sabbath in a village on the ,cheyenne showed what wild ,indians were4 ,the morning opened with two men disguised in buffalo-skins with the heads on1 running through the village4 ,they had had a dream1 were supposed to be possessed of spirits1 and as they chased the villagers all ran from them1 affrighted lest some witchcraft be wrought by them4 ,presently the church-bell rang at the missionary's tent1 and fifty ,indians came in1 gaudy in paints and wampum1 ornaments1 and dangling queues tied up with mink-skins1 the chief wearing a broken down beaver hat with a faded weed upon it1 and the rest supplied with fans of eagles' wings1 pipes1 and other accompaniments of ,indian gentlemen4 ,they listened with occasional grunts of approval during worship1 and filed out at the close with a cordial handshake1 one remaining1 named from his height ,touch-the-,clouds1 to say that he felt the importance of this new way1 and that he wished for himself and his people schools and churches4 ,this was encouraging1 but as the evening came on there set up a hideous noise2 a dance was in progress1 and all night long a relay of three ,indians kept up the hideous and monotonous tom-tom of their kettle-drums1 while the shrill scream of the women pierced the air4 ,the next morning were things equally painful4 ,a young ,indian woman1 with four children to care for1 put away by her cruel husband for another wife1 came to beg the missionary's influence to secure for her ,government rations4 ,a tent hard by was visited1 where the family1 in accordance with ,indian superstitions1 were gathering1 and had been for a year or two1 all sorts of valuable articles for presents in honor of some deceased member of the household1 intending by-and-by to distribute all these things1 leaving themselves beggared4 ,and last of all1 in a neighboring village were seen three men and a boy1 clad with a few feathers in their hair1 and yellow ochre on their bodies1 going through mummeries in the sight of a large company4 ,they were making mystery1 whatever that may be4 ,illustration3 ,,indian ,,girls would have been dangerous for three unarmed men to pass through their reservations1 it was perfectly safe last summer for a missionary speaking the ,indian language and his friends4 ,illustration3 ,,indian ,,in ,,native ,,dress1 ,,fort ,,berthold4 ,a third class of ,indians was found at ,fort ,berthold4 ,this reservation is a hundred miles north of ,bismarck1 ,dakota ,territory1 on the east side of the ,missouri4 ,there are three small tribes combined in one large village for protection against their ancient enemies the ,sioux1 namely1 the ,arickarees1 the ,mandans1 and the ,gros ,ventres4 ,these ,indians have latterly made great advances in civilization4 ,they have #hjj acres under cultivation1 all looking admirably and well fenced in1 and they are taking great pride in their work and asking for more land to cultivate4 ,they have comfortable homes1 or lodges1 as they are called1 made in an octagonal form1 of logs completely covered with earth4 ,they are eagerly obtaining from the ,government such comforts of civilization as they can--reapers1 cooking-stoves1 baking-powder1 and the like4 ,and yet this people display some of the grossest elements of savagery4 ,polygamy is common4 ,the disgusting scaffold burials still go on1 and the air in the neighborhood of the village is sometimes foul from the adjacent cemetery4 ,buffalo heads and poles with red streamers1 as offerings or invocations to spirits1 surmount many of the lodges and bear witness to the heathenism of the people4 ,many of the men are terribly scarred on the shoulders1 breast and arms with the cruel practices of the sun dance4 ,men and women alike wear the dress of their savage life4 ,there has been as yet little success from schools or church work4 ,few care for schools1 and the attendance at the mission chapel is not large4 ,the fault1 however1 is not with the devoted missionaries1 ,rev4 ,c4 ,l4 ,hall and his helpers of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 whose faithfulness is unsurpassed1 but with bad white men who visit the village4 ,for years these ,indians have been brought in contact with some of the worst influences of civilization1 and in consequence the women have become gross1 the men have lost their sense of honor1 and the people are manifestly more degraded and harder to reach than the wild ,indians on the ,sioux ,reservation4 ,after observation of these three types of ,indians1 the ,christianized1 the wild and the polluted1 certain conclusions were inevitable4 #a4 ,there is a natural nobility in the ,indian character4 ,the ,indian is debased by heathenism and his wild life1 lazy1 improvident1 filthy1 obscene and cruel2 and yet he is well endowed by nature with brains and heart and conscience4 ,he is clear-headed and generous2 he is often affectionate in his family2 he is capable of becoming industrious1 conscientious1 scholarly1 and thoroughly consecrated4 ,if his wild life has affected him unfavorably1 it has not done him the same kind of harm that slavery has to the colored man4 ,he is not crushed in spirit and ambition as was the colored slave at the time of the civil war4 ,illustration3 ,,indian ,,woman ,,at ,,fort discountenancing savage practices1 in stimulating the home-life1 is most admirable4 ,but ,christian efforts are yet more efficacious4 ,it is where the gospel has sway the longest1 or has been the last there is throughout the country almost complete control of the wild ,indians4 ,the day of ,indian wars is over4 ,we may very likely never have another4 ,now that the buffalo has largely disappeared1 the ,indian is dependent on the ,government supplies for food and clothing1 unless1 like the white man1 he resorts to agriculture4 ,in consequence1 without any large display of military force1 the ,indian agents are able to preserve excellent order on the reservations4 ,the ,indians feel their dependence and recognize the power of the ,government4 ,if fairly treated by the white man they will give us little trouble hereafter4 ,it is easy to see that modifications in their condition1 all looking toward civilization1 are constantly taking place4 ,they are giving up their ,indian dress4 ,it is now rare to find an ,indian whose dress is not in some way conformed to the white man's4 ,they are learning the comforts of civilization through the supplies from ,government1 and welcome the frame house1 the sugar and syrup1 the flour and beans1 the tools and clothing which come to them from this source4 ,they feel the pressure of the white population crowding upon them from every side4 ,they see their wild life is a thing of the past1 and while there are selfish1 vicious1 superstitious and conservative influences strongly at work against the change1 still the change goes on4 ,their more thoughtful men1 perceiving the necessity of the change and recognizing its advantage1 are urging the establishment of schools and churches among them4 ,there can be little doubt that as these processes continue the tribal relation will eventually cease1 the reservation system will be abandoned1 the ,indian will come under ordinary laws1 he will be assigned land in severalty1 will cultivate it for his support1 and become citizen4 ,already this is true of many ,indians1 and the day is not far distant--,i venture to prophesy that it is within the next twenty years--when1 if these influences continue1 the ,indian will be so thoroughly absorbed among his white brethren that as a separate race he will be lost to sight1 and the ,indian question will be a question no more4 three ,chinamen known as admitted to membership by confession of faith in an ,english-speaking church in this land4 ,for several years ,i had the opportunity of direct participation in this new missionary movement1 often taking my place as teacher of the new alphabet and guide to the pronunciation of many unphonetic words4 ,at first there was novelty about it and it was comparatively easy to obtain even the numerous teachers which this work requires4 ,but as the novelty wore off it became more difficult to find and keep volunteers in sufficient numbers4 ,besides1 a demand arose for more than the hour of the ,sunday-school service4 ,the eagerness to learn and the increasing acquisition of some called for a more constant and continuous drill4 ,so has come about the system of schools carried on1 under the ,american ,missionary ,association's appropriations and our ,california gifts1 by the ,california ,chinese ,mission4 ,i bear glad witness to the large measure of devotion with which this work has been conducted4 ,it is precisely the kind of work to bring out the best qualities of ,christian character in those who are responsibly engaged in it4 ,the motives for engaging in here1 but a feeling which is quite too prevalent4 ,and there are many who would help to teach the ,mongolians if they were to be taught where they belong1 who would be almost offended to be asked to help in their education here4 ,so all the more admirable1 in the face of public sentiment here1 is it that so many noble workers and givers have been found to sustain this work4 ,for is not this1 of all others1 the enterprise which takes the gold right out of the country8 ,i overheard an intelligent gentleman1 a member of ,congress1 and born in my native ,massachusetts1 express the duly considered opinion that the ,chinese mind is so organized that it cannot be expected to entertain the ,christian ideas4 ,it illustrated the sad fact that it takes a long time for even ,americans to entertain and be molded by those ideas4 ,this gentleman might easily have found scores of humble servants and laborers of this unassimilable race in his own city who had come as truly in the power of ,him1 who is the ,truth1 as any of us4 ,for it is the testimony of all who are acquainted with the facts that as large a proportion of those ,chinese who take the ,christian name adorn the doctrine as minds of the more ignorant colored people without the free interchange of personal conversation4 ,so for years the ,sunday-school has been placed at the head of the ,sabbath services here1 and given the forenoon1 the review by the ,superintendent occupying the time of a short sermon1 with the lesson for the day1 already explained and impressed by the several teachers1 for its text4 ,later in the day class prayer-meetings are held1 and here young ,christians learn to take up the cross of bearing testimony for ,christ1 and making audible prayer for themselves and others4 ,many of the scholars feel these meetings to be very valuable4 ,at the close of the school year a ,sunday-school ,convention is held1 and it is urged as a duty upon all ,christian students who go out to teach that they should organize and conduct ,sabbath schools in connection with their day schools4 ,we have recently received two donations of library books1 so that we now have enough to go once around1 and we loan
