the ,east1 in which our ,lord prayed and ,his ,apostles tilled1 may serve to beautify the homes of the faithful in ,western lands4 ,cut flowers lose their beauty and freshness soon1 but not nothing about it2 and the discriminating1 who see both and say it1 and at the same time throw out hints which as a rule are both acceptable and helpful4 ,particularly is this the case when the advice tendered confirms a growing conviction on the part of a writer4 ,one cannot work continuously at a subject1 and all the while get the thoughtful criticism of his observers1 without improving his methods4 ,from a review of a recent volume by the writer1 the following is taken3--,it seems to us that it is in the adaptation1 rather than strict translation1 that the wealth of thought and emotion buried in the service books of the ,eastern ,church will be minted into coin of golden praise meet for sanctuary use1 and comparable in worth and beauty to the splendid currency of these latter days4 ,this is strictly true1 and it is the conviction which has for some time possessed the author1 with the result that he has been giving less attention to translation1 or transliteration1 and more attention to suggestion1 adaptation1 and reminiscence4 ,one cannot spend a day with the ,greek service books 7say with the ,triodion1 which contains the incomparable ,lenten and ,easter offices7 without having his mind filled with thoughts the most beautiful1 thoughts which can sometimes be expressed in almost identical phrase with the original1 but which oftener1 in order to do them justice by revealing them in all their richness1 require to be dwelt upon1 expanded1 and clothed in appropriate western phrase4 ,this is without doubt the best way in which to deal with the praise material of the ,greek service books1 and the present writer has set himself in this volume to act according to that conviction4 ,here1 there are fewer translations than in any former volume1 and the greater number of the hymns are reminiscences of the ,greek4 ,the contents of this book may be ranged under three categories3--,a few translations or renderings1 as literal as it is possible or desirable to make them2 centos1 or patchwork1 i4e41 pieces which are not versions of any particular hymn in the original1 but which are made up of portions of various hymns2 and suggestions1 or reminiscences of the ,greek4 ,in the case of the last1 the best that can be said of them is that they owe their existence in the present instance1 to the ,greek4 ,while to the ordinary reader there may be nothing in these suggestions to indicate their source1 no one who is acquainted with the praise of the ,eastern ,church will fail to detect here and there certain marks which inevitably announce their origin4 ,in most cases initial ,greek headlines have been dispensed with1 for the reason that they can serve no useful purpose1 nor indicate with any certainty the source of any particular hymn4 ,when one rises from a contemplation of ,christian worship as it is presented to him in the ancient forms of the ,apostolic ,church1 it is with pain that his ears are assailed with charges which he knows to be as lacking in truth as they would be if they were levelled against ourselves4 ,god knows how far we have all drifted from our ideal1 and those who have the best excuse1 not the farthest4 ,but this offensive and ungrateful spirit is surely unbecoming on the part of those who owe so much to the ,church which they censure4 ,if ,christian love would abound on all sides1 how soon would the wounds of ,christ's ,body heal6 ,if those deep wounds are to be bound up1 it will only be by pouring in oil and wine4 ,controversy and argument have been tried for centuries4 ,they have failed4 ,we must all begin where the beloved ,st4 ,john so feelingly bids us1--,little children1 love one another4 ,love implies humility1 and if we are humble1 and stoop to love1 we will find hearts all over the world only longing and praying for the balm of that ,divine oil4 ,then dogmatic differences will be solved in a new manner1 and much more4 ,it is not a pleasant task to revert to the censures which are hurled against the ,eastern ,church1 by critics who are obviously ignorant of her past history1 and who seem to have taken no trouble to acquaint themselves with her present position2 but when one is continually met with the same offensive statements1 offensive because untrue1 there is only one thing to be done1 and that is to meet them with the truth1 and refute them on every possible occasion1 in the hope that in the end the truth will be vindicated4 ,the charges have certainly not the charm of variety2 they are painfully monotonous3--,the ,greek ,church is dead1 and non-missionary4 ,certainly non-missionary1 if dead6 ,to say of any organization1 church or other1 that it is dead and non-progressive1 is to say the worst that could be said4 ,dead6 ,and what are the signs of death in the ,eastern ,church8 ,truly they are marvellously unusual4 ,is it because she preserves the beauty1 dignity1 and quiet solemnity1 which must ever be associated with true worship1 and refuses to admit methods which are alien to it8 ,many of our ,churches have become societies1 or guilds 7a familiar term in these days71 in which are included every attraction which can appeal to the eyes of the world4 ,a ,pleasant ,sunday ,afternoon1 is the guise in which the worship of ,god is presented to men who are not attracted by the calm and rest of ,god's house2 and the methods employed are bringing with them their inevitable results4 ,we fear the ,church is in danger of forgetting that its prime function is to preserve the ,holy ,worship of ,god1 and by its means to establish the saints in ,the ,faith2 and that its mission is to go down to the world1 inspiring those who are there with the spirit of ,christ2 returning at the appointed time to observe the worship of ,god in ,his house1 and bringing with it those who are weary with the toil of life1 that they may be refreshed2 and is allowing the world to invade its sanctuary1 and scare away the spirit of true worship4 ,it is not enough to say that present-day methods must be observed1 that people will not come to church unless it conforms to the spirit of the times4 ,the human soul will still desire to dwell in the house of the ,lord1 to behold ,his beauty and to enquire1 when it feels impelled by the ,blessed ,spirit of ,god1--when it longs for peace and spiritual refreshment which can only be found in communion with the ,divine4 ,doubtless1 to the pushful spirit of the age1 the ,church which preserves in calm dignity the form of worship which has been handed down to it through the ages1 and tenaciously adhered to in the midst of persecution and martyrdom1 and refuses to admit the methods of the concert hall1 the debating society1 and the lecture room1 must appear to be a dead ,church indeed4 ,so be it6 ,but1 it is asked1 what evidences are there that the ,greek ,church is a living ,church8 ,what is she doing in the field of literature1 theological in particular8 ,and in aggressive ,christian work at home and abroad8 ,from this enquiry we cannot exclude the ,greek ,church in ,russia1 for1 while in the ancient sphere of that ,church's operation 7in ,greece1 and ,turkey1 and ,asia ,minor7 much is being done in the domain of education in her schools and theological colleges1 and in theological literature1 it is in ,russia1 where none of the grievous hindrances to activity exists which for #fjj years have frustrated many of her efforts at home1 but where free scope and encouragement for its exercise are guaranteed1 that most evidence of progress is seen4 ,here is the testimony of one who cannot1 prima facie1 be deemed unprejudiced4#a ,a few years ago1 ,father ,aurelio ,palmieri was sent to ,russia by the ,vatican to procure books and manuscripts for the ,russian section of the ,papal library at ,rome4 ,he writes in the ,tserkoviya ,viedomosto 7,december #f1 #aijd73--;,it is time to render justice to the truth1 and to put an end to those many calumnies1 which are propagated against ,russia by envious and interested persons--persons who desire to deprive her of her influence1 and to rob her of her prestige4 ,in the ,russian universities1 the instruction given is far more serious than that given in our own ,italy2 and the magnificent ,ecclesiastical ,academies1 all under religious influence1 at ,st4 ,petersburg1 ,moscow1 ,kieff1 and ,kazan1 make us feel a sense of sadness at the miserable and insufficient instruction that is given to our own ,italian clergy4 ,let us say frankly1 that in our ,italy1 and even at ,rome1 we possess no such establishments which for beauty of organization1 capable professors1 and wealth of libraries1 can rival these ,russian ,ecclesiastical ,academies4 ,to convince people of the truth of my assertion1 ,i need only refer them to the superb official organs of these ,academies 444 and set out what a vast quantity of scientific works this ,father ,palmieri does is brought together in these collections of ,russian theological writers1 and how far we in ,italy are from giving to the study of theology the development which it receives in ,russia4444 ,i invite the scholars1 not only of ,italy1 but of every nation1 to make acquaintance with the innumerable collection of books now in the ,vatican4 ,they will there find convincing testimony to the intensity of the intellectual work in ,russia1 and to the scientific vitality of her ,church4444 ,again1 in his book1 ,la ,chiesa ,russa 7,florence1 #aijh71 he deplores1 not the ignorance of the ,east1 but the ignorance of the ,west4 ,it is deplorable1 he says1 that the intense scientific production of ,russia is almost totally ignored by the ,west4444 ,a great nation like ,russia is not a negligible quantity affected by an intellectual quagmire 7p4 #fga74 ,the ,russian ,ecclesiastical literature is rich in monographs on particular subjects1 and above all in ,patristic theology4 ,in this sphere of research1 ,russian ,orthodoxy can even outrival the ,german science4 ,such is the testimony of one of the most cultured men in ,italy4 ,the question is sometimes asked1 ,what is the ,greek ,church doing at the present time in the department of hymnody1 in which her ancient offices are so rich8 ,much2 but as present day compositions are not used in the canonical services1 the supply of such material is not encouraged as it would be in other circumstances1 and as it is in the ,west1 where the demand for material for congregational hymnaries is so persistent4 ,but the ,greek ,church can boast of many hymn writers in her communion1 whose compositions would do no discredit to our ,western hymnaries4 ,any bookseller in ,athens would supply a catalogue of ,greek hymnological work to any interested enquirer4 ,the writer has before him at this moment a volume of hymns1 ,,triadikon 7,athens1 #aiji71 the work of ,bishop ,nektarios1 who for many years was head of the great ,rhizareion ,theological ,college in ,athens4 ,the volume contains about two hundred pieces suitable for use during the ,church seasons1 and for general use4 ,they were1 however1 composed1 so the author writes1 to be read reverently1 or sung privately1 in the household4 ,the language of the hymns composed by present day hymn-writers has the modern flavour1 and so presents difficulties which1 however1 the student who has a knowledge of the language of the service books can readily overcome1 with the help of a grammar and dictionary of modern ,greek2 for1 while modern ,greek is nine-tenths similar to ancient ,greek 7i4e41 modern ,greek of the first class1 for there are several classes1 according to the grade of society7 it has yet one-tenth which differs1 and it is that tenth which causes trouble4 ,such hymns are used at services extra ecclesiam1--at meetings1 church schools1 colleges1 and monasteries1 or at any other non-canonical service4 ,they are1 as a rule1 set to attractive music1 often by eminent musicians4 ,the translation of two hymns from the fore-mentioned collection by ,bishop ,nektarios1 are included in this volume at pp4 #ahc-f4 ,so1 even in the department of hymnody1 the ,greek ,church is showing no signs of falling away1 and1 although she refuses to admit modern productions into her ,church services1 and adheres to the hymns of her early hymn-writers 7an attitude1 by the way1 very similar to what we in ,scotland maintained until very recent times1 when psalms alone were permitted in our canonical services1 to the exclusion of all hymns71 she has yet a band of hymn-writers who uphold a noble succession1 and keep adding to her treasury of praise1 encouraged in their gracious work by the countenance which the ,church gives to its use on all possible occasions4 ,but the commonest charge levelled against the ,greek ,church is that of being non-missionary2 and the charge which is so utterly untrue1 is deemed sufficient to relegate her to the limbo of the effete and worthless4 ,the truth is1 that the missionary zeal1 and activity of that ,church1 are among the most outstanding features of her history2 and when we consider the terrible odds against which she has had to contend1 both in ,europe and ,asia1 we wonder at the success that has been achieved4 ,let us bear in mind that the population of ,russia alone is about #agj1jjj1jjj1 that the natural increase goes on at the rate of four millions annually1 and that in twenty years the population will amount to about #bej1jjj1jjj4 ,think of the mighty task laid upon the ,church to keep abreast of such a growth1 and at the same time to keep the ,faith alive in the mass1--for the great majority of this vast population are attached to the ,orthodox ,church4 ,and this is the task to which the ,greek ,church addresses herself1 to carry the blessings of ,christianity to the farthest ,russian outpost1 and to keep the flame alive where it has already been kindled4 ,yet this is the ,church which ,english-speaking ,christians call non-missionary4 ,if we take the ,english ,church1 for example1 which prides itself on its missions1 and if we exclude all its missions from the category of mission work which lie within the vast ,empire of ,england's dominions beyond the seas 7that is to say1 from ,india1 ,africa1 ,canada1 ,australia1 to ,english sailors1 etc471 we would find how very few and weak ,english missions really are4 ,what a poor role1 then1 do ,english missions play outside ,english lands6 ,why1 then1 do ,english folk gird at the great ,russian ,church for a lack of missionary zeal when she is labouring hard in her immense county in ,europe and ,asia for ,christ8 ,in ,siberia and ,asia generally she is ever spreading the ,faith1 and that among many tribes and tongues and peoples2 and she has missions in ,japan1 ,china1 ,persia1 ,palestine1 ,alaska1 the ,aleoutine ,islands1 and elsewhere4#b ,what the ,greek ,church is doing in ,russian dominions1 she is doing also in her ancient lands1 although under quite different auspices4 ,in ,turkey and ,asia ,minor she keeps the flame aglow amid adverse conditions1 and provides spiritual food for her vast household4 ,besides1 she is the most active missionary agency in the ,levant4 ,but enough has been said4 ,if we could only overtop the mountains of prejudice1 and we fear we must add1 for it is the parent of prejudice1 ignorance1 which divide the ,west from the ,east1 we should be able to look down not upon a barren wilderness1 but a fruitful vineyard1 in which the servants of ,christ are working under the eye of their ,master1 even as we are working in our separate sphere4 ,let us think about these things4 ---------- #a,vide an article in the ,re-union ,magazine1 by ,f4 ,w4 ,groves ,campbell1 ,,ll4,d41 ,march1 #aiaj 7,london3 ,cope ,fenwick74 #b,vide
