mind the baby8 ,do you believe that a girl should like to take care of her clothes and be able to make them2 that she should know how to be thrifty and to conserve the family money in buying and using food and clothing2 that she should play a fair game and put the group above her personal interests8 ,do you believe that she should value a strong healthy body above clothes and cosmetics1 and rejoice in the hope of being some day the healthy mother of healthy children8 ,if you do1 you believe in the ,girl ,scouts1 for in this organization the girls learn all these things in such a happy way that they like to do them1 which means that they keep on doing them4 ,the ,girl ,scouts1 a national organization1 is open to any girl who expresses her desire to join1 and voluntarily accepts the promise and the laws4 ,the object of the ,girl ,scouts is to bring to all girls the opportunity for group experience1 outdoor life1 and to learn through work1 but more by play1 to serve their community4 ,patterned after the ,girl ,guides of ,england1 the sister organization of the ,boy ,scouts1 the ,girl ,scouts have developed a method of self-government and a variety of activities that appear to be well suited to the desires of the girls1 as the #hi1hfd scouts and the #b1ejj new applicants each month testify4 ,,history ,,and ,,growth4 ,girl ,scouts and their leaders1 to the number of #hi1hfd1 were in #aibj organized in every ,state1 and in ,hawaii1 ,porto ,rico1 and ,alaska4 ,there are troops in #a1djj cities1 and local councils in #afb places4 ,this represents a tremendous growth since the founding by ,mrs4 ,juliette ,low in ,march1 #aiab1 of a handful of enthusiastic ,girl ,guides in ,savannah1 ,ga4 ,in #aiae the growth of the movement warranted its national incorporation2 so headquarters were established in ,washington1 ,d4 ,c41 and the name changed to ,girl ,scouts1 ,incorporated4 ,in #aiaf the headquarters were removed to ,new ,york1 and are now located at #ahi ,lexington ,avenue4 ,from the start the organization has been nonsectarian and open to all races and nationalities4 ,through the ,international ,council the ,girl ,scouts are affiliated with the ,girl ,guides of ,england and all parts of the ,british ,empire1 and similar organizations in other parts of the world4 ,at the #aibj meeting of the international conference at ,london1 reports were received from ,italy1 ,france1 ,belgium1 ,switzerland1 ,poland1 ,norway1 ,sweden1 ,denmark1 ,holland1 ,portugal1 ,russia1 ,czechoslovakia1 ,brazil1 ,argentina1 ,japan1 ,china1 and ,siberia1 as well as from all parts of the ,british ,empire1 and the ,united ,states4 ,from a membership of #i1gfi in ,january1 #aiah1 the girl scouts grew to #hi1hfd in #aiba1 at the rate of nearly #aj to #a in three years4 ,the greatest relative growth was in #aiah1 when the membership grew fourfold4 ,during #aiai the increase over the preceding year was more than two-thirds1 while in #aibj the relative increase was one-third4 ,the details are as shown in the accompanying table4 ,this growth is due to a spontaneous demand of community after community for scouting for girls1 and not to deliberate propaganda on the part of the national headquarters4 ,the reasons for it are therefore to be sought in the activities and methods themselves1 which make such widespread appeal4 ,,activities4 ,a glance through the handbook1 ,scouting for ,girls1 will show that the activities of the girl scouts center about the three interests--,home1 ,health1 and ,citizenship4 ,home4--,the program provides incentives for practicing woman's world-old arts by requiring an elementary proficiency in cooking1 housekeeping1 first aid1 and the rules of healthful living for any girl scout passing beyond the ,tenderfoot stage4 ,of the forty-odd subjects for which ,proficiency ,badges are given1 more than one-fourth are in subjects directly related to the services of woman in the home1 as mother1 nurse1 or home-keeper4 often distasteful because solitary1 is brought the sense of comradeship4 ,this is effected partly by having much of the actual training done in groups4 ,another element is the public recognition and rewarding of skill in this1 woman's most elementary service to the world1 usually taken for granted and ignored4 ,the spirit of play infused into the simplest and most repetitious of household tasks banishes drudgery4 ,give us1 oh1 give us1 says ,carlyle1 the man who sings at his work4 ,he will do more in the same time1 he will do it better1 he will persevere longer4 ,wondrous is the strength of cheerfulness2 altogether past comprehension its power of endurance4 ,while the place of most production is to-day outside the home1 much of the final preparation of goods1 particularly food and clothing1 is still done there4 ,so that1 while the homecrafts are far from being the vital necessities they once were1 they are still needed4 ,handicrafts of many sorts enter into the program of the girl scouts4 ,in camping1 girls must know how to set up tents1 build lean-to's1 and construct fireplaces4 ,they must also know how to make knots of various sorts to use for bandages1 tying parcels1 hitching1 etc4 ,among the productive occupations in which ,proficiency ,badges are awarded are cooking1 house planning1 beekeeping1 dairying and general farming1 gardening1 millinery1 weaving1 and needlework4 ,while production has left the home1 consumption is increasingly the business of the home-keeping woman4 ,there are few purchases1 even for men's own use1 which women do not have a hand in selecting4 ,practically the entire burden of household buying in all departments falls on the woman1 who is thus in a position to learn how to spend wisely and make the most of each dollar4 ,in ,france this has long been recognized1 and the women of the middle classes are the buying partners and bookkeepers in their husbands' business4 ,the girl-scout organization encourages thrifty habits and economy in buying in all of its activities4 ,the scout troops are self-supporting1 and are expected to earn most of their equipment by means of rallies1 pageants1 plays1 as well as by individual effort4 ,one of the #aj scout laws is that ,a girl scout is thrifty4 ,health4--,the girl scout learns that a cheerful scout1 a clean scout1 a helpful scout is a well scout4 ,she is the only scout that really is prepared4 ,so that health1 physical and mental1 is the keynote to the scout activities1 which are calculated to develop the habit of health1 rather than simply to give information about anatomy or physiology4 ,personal health is recognized by the badge of ,health ,winner1 given to the girl who for three months follows certain rules of living1 such as eating only wholesome food1 drinking plenty of water1 going to bed early1 exercising in the open air1 and keeping clean1 and who shows the result by improved posture1 and by the absence of constipation and colds4 ,outdoor sports1 swimming1 boating1 and dancing are other health-producing activities4 ,of all health-promoting activities1 camping is the best1 and this means all stages of life in the open1 from the day's hike1 with one meal out of doors1 to the overnight or week-end hike1 and finally the real1 big camp1 open all summer4 ,girl scouts learn how to dress for outdoor living1 how to walk without fatigue1 and how to provide themselves with food1 warmth1 and shelter1 so that roughing it does not mean being uncomfortable4 ,during #aibj1 #ej large girl-scout camps were maintained in #af ,states4 ,these are self-supporting1 and as they are open for #aj weeks as a rule and accommodate about #ej girls at a time1 they give an opportunity to several thousand for the best sort of holiday4 ,the idea is to have enough camps to give every scout the experience4 ,to promote this work national headquarters maintains a camping section and has published a book1 ,campward ,ho6 which gives full directions for organizing and running large1 self-supporting camps for girls4 ,community health habits are quite as important as the purely personal1 and the older girl scout is expected to become a health guardian1 which means that she takes an intelligent interest in the things pertaining to public health1 such as playgrounds1 swimming pools1 school lunches1 the water and milk supplies1 clean streets1 the disposition of waste and garbage1 the registration of births1 and the prevention of infant mortality4 ,she also learns how to help in times of emergency as first aid1 in sickness as home nurse1 and at any time as child nurse4 ,a scout whose mind is filled with interesting facts about birds and animals and trees1 and who is busy playing games with her companions or in making useful and beautiful things and in rendering active service to her home and community1 is apt to have a healthy mind without thinking much about it4 ,and she has a little rule for the blue times1 which is to smile and sing under all difficulties4 ,citizenship4--,the basic organization of the girl scouts into the self-governing unit of a patrol is in itself an excellent means of political training4 ,patrols and troops conduct their own meetings1 and the scouts learn the elements of parliamentary law4 ,working together in groups1 they realize the necessity for democratic decisions4 ,they also come to have community interests of an impersonal sort4 ,this is perhaps the greatest single contribution of the scouts toward the training of girls for citizenship4 ,little boys play not only together but with men and boys of all ages4 ,the interest of baseball is not confined to any one age4 ,the rules of the game are the same for all1 and the smallest boy's judgment on the skill of the players may be as valid as that of the oldest fan4 ,girls have had in the past no such common interests4 ,their games have been either solitary or in very small groups1 in activities largely of a personal character4 ,if women are to be effective in modern political society1 they must have from earliest youth gregarious interests and occupations4 ,among the scout activities that tend to develop this larger community sense are games1 athletic sports of all kinds1 including team work and competition between small1 well-knit groups4 ,folk dancing and other forms of amusement1 such as dramatics1 pageants1 and story-telling1 serve a similar purpose because they all mean the possession of a resource not only for the right use of the girl's own leisure time1 but for serving this need in the community4 ,,methods4 ,the activities of the girl scouts are1 of course1 not peculiar to this organization4 ,every one of them is provided for elsewhere1 in schools1 clubs1 and societies4 ,but the way in which they are combined and coordinated about certain basic principles is peculiar to the girl scouts4 ,in the first place all these activities have a common motive1 which is preparation for a fuller life for the individual1 not only in her personal but in her social relations4 ,it is believed that both the habits formed and the concrete information acquired contribute to the girls being ready to meet intelligently most of the situations that are likely to arise in their later life4 ,this concept is expressed in the girl scout's motto1 ,be prepared4 ,the method of preparation followed is that found in nature1 whereby young animals and birds play at doing all the things they will need to do well when they are grown and must feed and fend for themselves and their babies4 ,the heart of the girl scouts' laws is helpfulness1 and so the scouts have a slogan3 ,do a good turn daily4 ,by following this in letter and spirit1 helpfulness becomes second nature4 ,because the girl scouts are citizens they know and respect the meaning of the flag1 and one of the first things they learn is the pledge3 ,i pledge allegiance to my flag1 and to the ,republic for which it stands2 one ,nation indivisible1 with liberty and justice for all4 ,some observers have criticized the girl-scout organization because of its apparently military character4 ,it is true that the girls wear a uniform of khaki and are grouped in patrols corresponding to the fours in the ,army2 that they salute and learn simple forms of drill and signaling4 ,but the reason they do these is because the military organization happens to be the oldest form of organization in the world1 and it works4 ,it is the best way men have found of getting a number of persons to work together4 ,following directions given to a group is quite a different matter from doing something alone1 and most of us need special training in this4 ,a group of eight has been found to work the best1 because it is the largest number that can be handled by a person just beginning to be a leader1 and1 moreover1 elementary qualities of leadership seem to exist in just about the proportion of one in eight4 ,it is probably on this account that children take so kindly to the form1 rather than because of any glamor of the army1 though this must be admitted as a factor4 ,in actual practice the drill and signaling take up a very small portion of the program and are nowhere followed as ends in themselves1 but only as a means to an end4 ,uniform4--,the uniform is simple1 durable1 and allows freedom of action4 ,it is of khaki because this has been found to be the best wearing fabric and color4 ,it is not easily torn and does not readily soil4 ,wearing it gives the girls a sense of belonging to a larger group1 such as it is hard to get in any other way4 ,it keeps constantly before them the fact that they represent a community to whose laws they have voluntarily subscribed1 and whose honor they uphold4 ,it is well1 too1 to have an impersonal costume1 if for no other reason than to counteract the tendency of girls to concentrate upon their personal appearance4 ,to have a neat1 simple1 useful garb is a novel experience to many an overdressed doll who has been taught to measure all worth by extravagance of appearance4 ,,organization4 ,the outstanding feature of the girl-scout organization is its voluntary character4 ,among some #g1djj officers and leaders of girl scouts throughout the country in the fall of #aibj1 just #baa were paid workers4 ,this is about #c per cent4 ,the organization is actually a great volunteer school of citizenship in which the women of the country share with their younger sisters the results of their own experience in ideals and practical working knowledge of community living4 ,scout troops are organized either independently or in connection with public and private schools1 churches1 settlements1 and other associations4 ,scouts of different ages4--,the original girl-scout program was designed mainly with the needs of the young adolescent in mind1 and the age was fixed from #aj to #ah years4 ,but the little girls wanted to come in1 and so a separate division was made for them called the ,brownies or ,junior ,scouts4 ,then the older girls and women wanted to join1 and as time went on the original girl scouts grew up but not out of the scout movement1 and programs are being made for ,citizen ,scouts who are #ah and over4 ,the three age groups seem to be natural ones1 and each has its own methods and activities4 ,the ,brownies are formed into packs1 under the leadership of a ,brown ,owl1 and play games and learn self-help and how to lend a hand to their families4 ,the ,citizen ,scouts are expected to be self-directing and to take actual part in the life of the community and1 either as wage earners or service givers1 to pay their way4 ,but the large majority of all girl scouts belong to the middle group4 ,more girls register at #ac than at any other age4 ,this is interesting1 as it marks the age of susceptibility to social ideas1 shown also by the fact that it is the most common age of religious conversion4 ,it is also the age of first crime4 ,the distribution of ages at first registration is shown by the accompanying table4 ,the organization of the regular girl scouts is as follows3 ,ages of ,girl ,scouts at first registration4 ------------------------------- ,ages4 ,number4 ,per #a1jjj4 ------------------------------- #f-i #ddj #e #aj #f1jei #gc #aa #i1acj #aaj #ab #ad1heg #agi #ac #af1dcd #aih #ad #ad1bgf #agb #ae #aj1gjg #abi #af #e1haj #gj #ag #c1dhf #db ------------------- ,total #aj-ag #hj1gei #igh #ah and over #a1hbf #bb ------------------- ,grand total #hc1jbe #a1jjj ------------------------------- ,patrol4--,eight girls form a ,patrol1 which is the working unit4 ,one of them is elected patrol leader and has charge of the activities for as long as the patrol wishes4 ,it is desirable to have each girl of a patrol serve as a leader at some time or other4 ,troop4--,one or more patrols constitute a ,troop1 which is the administrative unit recognized by the national organization4 ,the ,troop meets weekly and wherever possible at a place which belongs to it4 ,when possible troops should meet outdoors4 ,the troops are self-supporting and earn money for all equipment as well as for camps and hikes or special activities4 ,troops are registered with national headquarters and pay annual dues of #ej cents for each member4 ,they also have their own local dues1 generally #e or #aj cents weekly4 ,captain4--,the troop is under the direction of a ,captain1 who must be at least #ba years of age and whose qualification as a leader of young girls is passed upon by national headquarters before she is commissioned4 ,lieutenant4--,a captain may have one or more ,lieutenants1 who must be at least #ah years of age1 and whose commissions are likewise subject to control by national headquarters4 ,captains and lieutenants may be organized into associations in any given locality4 ,scout classes4--,there are three classes of girl scouts1 the youngest being the ,tenderfoot1 the name given by frontiersmen to the man from the city who is not hardened to the rough life out of doors4 ,even the ,tenderfoot1 however1 has to know some things1 including the promise1 laws1 slogan1 and motto2 how to salute and the respect due to the flag2 how to make an ,american flag2 and how to tie at least four kinds of useful knots4 ,she must also have earned enough money to buy some part of her scout equipment4 ,the ,second-class scout has been a tenderfoot for at least one month and can pass a test of distinctly greater difficulty4 ,this includes1 under home interests1 the ability to make fires in stoves and out of doors1 to cook a simple dish so that it will be palatable1 to set a table for two courses1 to make an ordinary and a hospital bed1 and to sew4 ,under health interests1 she must know the main rules of healthful living1 her own height and weight1 and their relation to the standard2 some simple first-aid points such as stopping bleeding1 removing speck from eye1 and bandaging a sprained ankle4 ,she must also have a variety of facts at her command that will keep her alert and interested when out of doors1 such as an acquaintance with animals1 birds1 and plants1 the use of a compass1 the alphabet of a signal code2 and must demonstrate her ability to observe her surroundings accurately and quickly so as to report upon them4 ,under topics preparing for citizenship she must know the history of the ,american flag1 how to prevent fire1 and what to do in case of fire1 and must have served her troop1 church1 or community in some way and earned or saved money for some personal or troop equipment4 ,the highest rank is that of ,first-class scout1 and is to be attained only by a young person of considerable accomplishment4 ,she must be able to find her way about city or country without any of the usual aids1 using only the compass and her developed judgment of distance and direction4 ,she must also be able to communicate and receive messages by signaling4 ,she must have shown proficiency in home nursing1 first aid1 and housekeeping1 and1 in addition1 in either child care1 personal health1 laundering1 cooking1 needlework1 or gardening4 ,she must also be an all-round outdoors person1 familiar with camping and able to lead in this1 or be a good skater or a naturalist or be able to swim4 ,not only must she know all these different things1 but she must have trained a tenderfoot1 started a savings account1 and served her community in some tangible way4 ,proficiency badges4--,after a girl scout has attained to first class there are still other worlds to conquer1 as the badges she has earned on the way are only a few of the many to be worked toward4 ,there are no less than #dg subjects in which a scout may achieve1 and more are being added4 ,just to mention a few3 ,a girl scout may be an artist1 a beekeeper1 a business woman1 a craftsman1 or a dancer2 an electrician1 a farmer1 a flower finder1 a horsewoman1 an interpreter1 a motorist2 or a musician1 a scribe1 a swimmer1 or a star gazer4 ,the highest award given is the ,golden ,eaglet1 which means the earning of #ba ,merit ,badges1 of which #ae are in required subjects4 ,about #b1jjj ,merit ,badges are earned a month4 ,an analysis of the subjects shows that home nursing is the most popular1 with #abf of each #a1jjj earned4 ,laundress comes next with #ig4 ,first aid is next with #fg4 ,needlewoman1 child nurse1 cook1 pathfinder1 health guardian1 flower finder or zoologist1 and home maker complete the first #aj most popular badges1 with between #fa and #ch in each #a1jjj4 ,the details are shown in the accompanying table4 ,local councils4--,where troops are numerous it is usual to form a council composed of women and men representing all the best interests of the community3 ,parents1 schools1 religious denominations of all sorts1 business1 producers1 women's clubs1 and other social and philanthropic organizations4 ,the council acts as the link between the girl scouts and the community4 ,it has the same relation to the separate troops that the school board has to the schools--that is1 it guides and decides upon policies and standards1 interprets the scouts to the community and the community to the scouts4 ,it does not do the executive or teaching work2 that belongs to the directors1 captains1 lieutenants1 and patrol leaders4 ,one function of the council is to interest public-spirited women and men1 particularly artists and scientists1 in girl-scout work and to get them to act as referees in awarding proficiency badges4 ,but wisdom is to be sought not only in large cities1 where there are schools and museums1 laboratories and studios4 ,it is a poor community that does not have at least one wise old person--a farmer learned in nature's ways1 a retired sailor stocked with sea lore1 or a mother of men who knows life as perhaps no one else can4 ,the wise council will know where to find these natural teachers and see that the scouts go to their schools4 ,another prime function of the council is to raise funds and to make available such material equipment as camp sites1 meeting places for the troops1 etc4 ,the captain should turn to the council for help in arranging and directing rallies1 dances1 fairs1 pageants1 and other devices for entertainment or securing money4 ,national organization4--,the central governing body of the girl scouts is the national council1 holding an annual convention of elected delegates from all local groups4 ,the national council works through an executive board1 which meets monthly and conducts national headquarters in ,new ,york4 ,the national director is in charge of headquarters and his direct responsibility for the administration of the whole organization1 with the general divisions of field1 business1 publication1 and education1 each in charge of a secretary4 ,the field work is administered through #ad regions1 each covering several ,states1 and in charge of a regional director1 who helps in the formation of local councils1 the training of captains1 and acts as general supervisor and consultant for all work in the district4 ,under business comes the handling of mails1 all the work of the shop where uniforms1 insignia1 books1 badges1 flags1 and other equipment are sold1 and the distribution of material ordered by mail4 ,there are three classes of publications3 ,first1 a monthly journal1 ,the ,american ,girl4 ,second1 pamphlets and articles for general propaganda and publicity2 these are handled by the editorial and publicity staffs1 respectively4 ,third come publications of a technical nature1 like the official handbooks for scouts and officers and outlines for training courses4 ,these form part of the work of the education department1 which has general oversight of all that pertains to training for leaders and the development of standards of work1 including the important feature of coordinating the girl scouts with the other educational and social organizations4 ,camping also forms a part of the work of the education department4 ,during #aiai and #aibj the following publications were issued3 ,scouting for ,girls3 ,the official handbook1 #egf pages4 ,campward ,ho3 ,a manual for girl-scout camps1 #aib pages4 ,designed to cover the needs of those undertaking to organize and direct large1 self-supporting camps for girls4 ,the ,blue ,book of ,rules for ,girl ,scout ,captains3 ,all official rules and regulations1 #cb pages4 ,training ,courses3 7#a7 ,outline for #cb-period course1 #ag pages4 7#b7 ,introductory course1 #aj periods1 #af pages4 ,girl ,scout ,health ,record3 ,booklet form for recording points for health winner's badge4 ,miscellaneous ,pamphlets3 ,averaging #h pages2 #abh1cbe copies4 ,need for leaders4--,the growth in membership has been twice as rapid among the scouts as it has among the officers1 as may be seen in the table already given4 ,for every scout in #aiah we have #aj in #aiba4 ,for every officer in #aiah we have but #e in #aiba4 ,for some time to come1 therefore1 the energy of the national officers must be directed toward the securing of properly trained leaders4 ,colleges and higher schools are responding to a gratifying extent with the introduction of training courses in scouting for girls4 ,within two years courses have been given at the following colleges or universities3 ,adelphi1 ,boston1 ,bryn ,mawr1 ,carnegie ,institute1 ,cincinnati1 ,converse1 ,elmira1 ,hunter1 ,johns ,hopkins1 ,missouri1 ,new ,rochelle1 ,northwestern1 ,pittsburg1 ,rochester ,mechanics' ,institute1 ,rochester ,university1 ,rockford1 ,simmons1 ,smith1 ,syracuse1 ,chicago ,normal ,school of ,physical ,education1 ,community ,service ,council of ,marquette ,county1 ,mich41 ,manhattan ,trade ,school for ,girls1 ,milwaukee ,normal1 ,state ,normal at ,pittsburgh1 ,pa41 ,washington ,state ,normal1 and ,western ,state ,normal1 ,mich4 ,the following schools and colleges are asking for courses3 ,chicago1 ,cornell1 ,detroit ,normal1 ,kalamazoo1 ,michigan ,state ,normal1 ,pennsylvania ,state1 and ,temple ,university4 ,through cooperation with the deans of women in all parts of the country1 and with the ,intercollegiate ,community ,service ,association1 the college women are being influenced to take up scouting as an extra academic activity before graduation1 and as a form of community service in their home towns later4 ,in addition to this work through existing educational bodies1 many special courses are conducted in connection with the organizations of local councils4 ,the ,first ,national ,training ,school for ,girl ,scout ,officers has been conducted for four years1 the last two years at ,long ,pond ,camp in ,plymouth1 ,mass4 ,during the summer of #aibj special training camps were also held in connection with the councils of ,greater ,new ,york1 ,cincinnati1 and ,harrisburg1 with instruction given under the auspices of national headquarters4 ,five such camps are planned for #aiba1 located in ,plymouth1 ,central ,valley1 in the ,catskills1 ,lake ,mohegan1 ,n4 ,y41 ,philadelphia1 and ,cincinnati4 ,scouting in the public schools4--,only that organization for young people can succeed which contributes directly to their chief business1 which is getting an education4 ,one reason the girl scout organization is received so cheerfully by school people is that it works into the school's own plans to a remarkable degree4 ,local councils have a larger representation from the public schools than from any other single agency4 ,scout leaders are drawn largely from the teaching force because teachers naturally have a better insight into the needs of young people than any other single group4 ,in a few places this interest has resulted in the gradual assimilation of scouting into the school system4 ,at ,fort ,scott1 ,kans41 this work has progressed furthest1 with #ij per cent of all pupils of scout age1 either boy or girl scouts4 ,supt4 ,ramsey made a most favorable report on this situation at the ,cleveland meeting of the ,department of ,superintendence of the ,national ,education ,association in #aibj4 ,among essential features he mentioned the following3 ,the boy scout executive and girl scout commissioner act as recreational directors and have charge of all the health education and vocational guidance4 ,a room is set aside in the ,junior ,high ,school for all scout work which1 however1 is passed upon by a council1 including persons outside of the school force4 ,through glee clubs and choruses great interest in community singing and other music has been developed4 ,the scout organization is helping to solve the dress problem for both boys and girls4 ,to give the modern ideals of education would be to state the ideals of scouting4 ,the modern teacher is increasingly well fitted to become a good scout leader4 ,scouting may best be promoted through the public school1 because that is the only organization that includes all the boys and girls4 ,moreover1 because of close daily association1 leaders of school troops can insure each scout being an active scout4 ,the school also benefits by scouting in a number of ways4 ,older pupils stay in school longer because of their interest in scouting than because of any other influence4 ,a year of work in scouting will do as much toward acquainting a teacher with the ideals of teaching as a year spent in any college or university of the country4 ,finally1 scouting secures the interest1 attention1 and good will of the parents to the public schools4 ,girl ,scout badges earned in #aiai-bj4
