,technology ,as a social document1 the collection of presentation pieces1 mostly silver1 in the ,united ,states ,national ,museum provides evidence of the taste and craftsmanship in ,america at various periods from the mid-#ahth century to the #aibj's4 ,although the representative items selected for illustration confirm the view that such pieces often lack artistic merit1 the collection nevertheless reveals the deeds--in war1 politics1 technology1 diplomacy1 sports--that our forebears deemed worthy of special recognition4 ,and it helps to bring alive some figures now submerged in our ever-expanding history4 ,,the ,,author3 ,margaret ,brown ,klapthor is associate curator of political history in the ,smithsonian ,institution's ,museum of ,history and ,technology4 ,the custom of giving a piece of silver to an individual in recognition of service or in appreciation of accomplishment probably began as soon as man developed the fashioning of that metal into objects4 ,such a presentation piece was a tangible and durable form of recognition which could be appreciated1 used1 displayed1 and enjoyed by the recipient4 ,many of these silver pieces became for succeeding generations the cherished evidence of recognition accorded to an ancestor1 and they were preserved long after the more customary family silver had worn out or been lost4 ,the ,smithsonian ,institution's ,museum of ,history and ,technology has what may well be the most varied and extensive collection of such presentation pieces ever to be preserved and exhibited in one place4 ,the collection contains the work of some of the more prominent ,american silversmiths1 but most of the pieces are by lesser known makers and are in the collection because of historic interest rather than artistic merit4 ,the chief usefulness of the collection lies in its value as a social document and in the mute evidence it gives of the taste and craftsmanship of the periods covered4 ,the collection is also helpful in dating type specimens that do not have specific associations with persons and dates4 ,perhaps even more interesting than the gamut of styles that the collection presents is the panorama of deeds1 events1 and persons that our forebears considered worthy of recognition4 ,silver presentation pieces were awarded to persons in almost every walk of life--to military men1 to peace-loving ,indians1 and to men who achieved success in politics and agriculture4 ,they were given for sea rescues1 for heroic deeds by firemen and school-patrol boys1 and for outstanding community and civic work4 ,within our time they have been given as trophies for excellence in athletics1 automobile racing1 and many other events4 ,illustration3 ,figure #b4--,,snuffbox inlaid with the ,smithsonian ,institution has only a few #ahth-century pieces in its collection4 ,the earliest of these is an inlaid silver snuffbox 7fig4 #b7 made by ,william ,cario1 who worked in ,portsmouth1 ,new ,hampshire1 about #agfc4 ,the oval box--evidently a gift to the silversmith's second wife1 ,lydia ,croxford1 whom he married in #agfh--;has inscribed on its base ,the property of ,lydia ,cario and #agfi4 ,the cover has an undersurface of horn1 and the silver on the outer surface is inlaid with mother-of-pearl and tortoise shell in a filigree pattern4 ,many of the earliest pieces of presentation silver were made for use in churches1 and they were given by groups as well as by individuals4 ,representative of this type is a silver alms plate#a with the following inscription on the rim3 ,the ,gift of the ,honble ,,thomas ,,hancock ,,esq,r to the ,,church in ,brattle ,street ,boston #agfd4 ,the plate is shallow with a slightly domed center4 ,engraved on the flat rim1 in addition to the inscription1 is a crest at the top and the cherub's head at the bottom4 ,the piece is marked by ,john ,coburn1 who lived in ,boston from #agbe to #ahjc4 ,five trays matching this one are in the for its communion service--,january #a1 #ahae4 ,this cup1 with a concave body and a baluster stem with a square foot1 is marked ,moulton and is in the style of ,ebenezer ,moulton who worked in ,boston between #agfh and #ahbd4 #aith-,century ,pieces ,the collections of the ,united ,states ,national ,museum that cover the political1 cultural1 military1 and technological history of ,america in the #aith century are probably without rival1 and the collection of presentation silver is no exception4 ,the recognition of military prowess by the presentation of silver objects was especially popular during this century4 ,,for ,,service ,,in ,,war ,,of #ahab ,some handsome pieces of silver of the federal style were given for service in the ,war of #ahab4 ,historically the most important of these is a mammoth punch set 7fig4 #d7 presented to ,colonel ,george ,armistead by the citizens of ,baltimore in recognition of his services in the defense of ,fort ,mc,henry against the ,british attack in #ahad4 ,the service includes an oval silver tray with a handle on each end1 the whole of which is supported on six winged-claw feet4 ,the tray is #bi inches long and #bb inches wide4 ,the ball-shaped punch bowl1 #ab-a_/b inches in diameter1 is supported by four eagles mounted on a round base4 ,there is a loop handle of silver rope on each side4 ,the bowl is an exact copy in size and design of the mortar bombs the ,british hurled at the fort4 ,on one side of the bowl is the following inscription3 ,presented by a number of the citizens of ,baltimore to ,lieutenant ,colonel ,george ,armistead for his gallant and successful defense of ,fort ,mc,henry during the bombardment by a large ,british ,force1 on the #abth and #acth ,september #ahad when upwards of #aejj shells were thrown2 #djj of which from #ahad to #ahch4 ,in regard to the excellence of the work of these silversmiths1 there is an interesting comment in a diary of ,philip ,hone that is owned by the ,new-,york ,historical ,society4 ,on ,february #ad1 #ahch1 ,hone wrote3 ,fletcher and ,co4 are the artist who made the ,clinton vases4 ,nobody in this world of ours hereabouts can compete with them in their kind of work4#d ,in the set are ten silver cups1 each #c-a_/d inches high and #c inches in diameter4 ,the cups have the same rounded shape as the bowl1 without the loop handles1 and are marked on the bottom by ,andrew ,e4 ,warner1 a silversmith who was working in ,baltimore from #ahje until his death in #ahgj4 ,the ladle1 in the same shape as the cups1 is also marked by ,warner4 ,during the defense of ,fort ,mc,henry ,colonel ,armistead had under him about #a1jjj men1 including soldiers1 sailors1 and volunteers4 ,it is said he was the only man aware of the alarming fact that the powder magazine was not bombproof4 ,during the night of ,september #ac the fort was under constant bombardment by the enemy1 but the attack failed4 ,discouraged by the loss of the ,british general in land action1 and finding that the by the ,city of ,new ,york in recognition of his services in the ,war of #ahab does not fall strictly within the province of this article1 but it is included because it is similar to the silver pieces just described4 ,the exterior of the box 7fig4 #f7 is beautifully chased in a line design4 ,the inside of the lid is inscribed as follows3 ,the ,corporation of the ,city of ,new ,york to ,major another pipe in the collections of the ,museum represents a gesture of friendship between nations4 ,it is a meerschaum pipe#g with a silver lid on the bowl and with a silver mouthpiece4 ,the lid bears this inscription3 ,this pipe was presented to ,sir ,frederick ,hankey by the ,grand ,vizier of ,turkey at ,constantinople in the year #ahcj and to ,thomas ,hankey ,esqre by the ,daughter of ,sir
