demands4 ,they are simply the healthy development of legitimate missionary work4 ,just now there is urgent demand for the increase of facilities for promoting industrial education4 ,the ,south is arising into a new life4 ,new fields of labor are rapidly opening4 ,skilled workmen are wanted4 ,the possibilities of agricultural prosperity are becoming better understood4 ,the aspiring youth of both sexes are comprehending their opportunities1 and the industrial departments in connection with our institutions are patronized as never before4 ,we ought to make the most of them now4 ,we need more means for supplying the minds of those hungering for knowledge with good reading4 ,the colored people have few1 if any1 books or periodicals4 ,we ought to have the means at once for furnishing fifty libraries and reading-rooms at as many different points4 ,such help to those willing to help themselves to some extent should be provided4 ,the students leaving our schools to go forth as teachers may be numbered by thousands4 ,these explore the dark places of the land4 ,they open schools in such buildings as can be found1 or1 finding none1 teach out of doors4 ,we need means to aid many such with supplemental support1 making it possible for them to continue their schools longer than the few months provided for by the limited ,state appropriations4 ,thousands of dollars could be used wisely in this way4 ,the opportunity now for temperance work is more promising than ever4 ,a temperance wave has been sweeping some portions of the ,south4 ,our students are thoroughly indoctrinated in the principles of total abstinence4 ,they make the best advocates of the cause that can be had for many localities4 ,it is a crucial period4 ,the time to do this work is now--now1 while the great questions at issue are being agitated and settled4 ,we ought to have means for extending our efforts to the utmost in this direction4 ,of more importance still is evangelistic work1 supplemental to the labors of our pastors4 ,this is coming into more than usual prominence4 ,our students have had thorough training for it1 and no little experience in it during their course of small her conception of how this is to be accomplished6 ,she is a heathen--hemmed in on every side by fear and superstition4 ,her gods are gods of fear4 ,she believes in witchcraft1 is afraid of a world full of evil spirits4 ,under a pagan religion her place is next to the mere animals4 ,she goes with her husband to the hunt1 not as a companion1 but as the drudge1 the human pack-horse2 she prepares the food1 and her husband devours it regardless of her needs2 he may boast of his old woman as being nina mimi heca 7swift or good to work7 for that is the only accomplishment required in his selfish1 egotistical mind4 ,the ,indian woman comes into the world under a species of protest--every ,indian parent desiring to have boys1 rather than girls1 hence she grows up into a condition of servitude4 ,in the ,indian nation to purchase a wife is the honorable way1 all other ways are dishonorable1 and the man having bought his wife1 although the custom of the country does not allow him to dispose of her to another1 yet he may put her away1 or leave her1 at his pleasure4 ,he may also whip her and beat her1 for she is his money4 ,i never shall forget one poor woman who came to me soon after we went to the ,indian country4 ,she showed me her back covered with the marks where her husband had beaten her4 ,now ,i have given you a brief description of the ,indian woman as we find her4 ,what can be done for her8 ,what would you do for her8 ,there is only one thing4 ,help her to become a ,christian4 ,this is not to be accomplished in a hurry1 for she is in bondage to her husband--to her religion4 ,but faith and prayer1 together with a genuine interest in the ,indian home1 can accomplish much4 ,desolate and comfortless though that home may be1 it can be transformed1 and the husband even can be made to see that there is something more real1 something that is more satisfying1 something that is more comforting than this life of fear and bondage to his heathen gods4 ,the man has more to give up than the woman if he becomes a ,christian4 ,if a woman changes her gods and her religion1 no one cares very much2 it is 'only a woman4' ,but a man must abandon his ancestral faith1 which binds him more strongly than the woman1 for the very reason that he is a man1 and has been inducted into manhood through the ceremonies of his religion4 ,he can be led to see that his wife is worth more to him than his horse or his dog2 and he begins to see that he can do some of the work which she has been obliged to do1 and thus she is enabled to make home more attractive4 ,with the dawn of ,christianity comes the first effort toward civilized ways4 ,the husband now brings the wood and water1 and little by little a few household conveniences appear1 such as chairs1 a table1 a few dishes2 also knives and forks are used instead of fingers2 even lambrequins are sometimes seen--hung1 however1 in the most absurd way1 outside the shades--and we are astonished to see in some of the houses white counterpanes and ruffled pillow-shams4 ,also a ,u4 ,s4 ,t4 ,d4 blanket is often spread down for a carpet1 and the rude1 rough walls are covered with pictures cut from illustrated newspapers4 ,we find them ready and anxious to be taught many simple and needful domestic arts1 such as making light bread and preparing wholesome dishes of food for the sick4 ,the teaching of making light bread became quite an important part of my duties as a missionary's wife1 and for the ,indian women to take lessons in bread-making became quite fashionable4 ,then she shows a desire to dress like white women1 and instead of the broadcloth skirt tied around her waist with a string and the short calico sack1 and moccasins upon her feet1 she appears with a kilt plaiting around her dress skirt1 and1 what probably in her mind is an improvement upon white woman's taste1 the plaiting is headed with two or three rows of bright worsted skirt braid4 ,as she admires the thin and lightly covered head of the white baby1 she closely clips her own baby's hair so as to have it as nearly like a white baby as possible4 ,but all this is the mere outside of life--one benefit which ,christianity brings to her personally4 ,she begins to show that she has become a missionary at heart and that she has a desire to send this great blessing which has wrought such a change in her home into other homes2 and as others like herself1 near at hand1 have been treasuring up the blessed words of the ,lord ,jesus1 ,go ye and preach my gospel1 they begin to think that they can do something to send the good tidings to those who are in the darkness which so recently surrounded themselves4 ,now1 in the ,dakota mission1 we have thirteen churches1 and in every one a woman's missionary society1 and the money raised is used to support native missionaries--that is1 ,christian ,indians are sent out among the heathen ,indians as missionaries1 and are supported by ,indian societies4 ,the ,indian woman's society is conducted very much like any sewing society among white women4 ,some woman is appointed to lead the devotional exercises1 and we have our officers appointed annually4 ,they make children's clothing after the white woman's fashion1 and many useful articles similar to those usually made in sewing societies4 ,those women who are able make articles after their own styles1 such as moccasins1 pretty bags handsomely ornamented with porcupine1 bead or ribbon work4 ,these articles are gifts to the society1 and we have no difficulty in disposing of them to those who wish specimens of ,indian woman's skill in fancy work1 or who may wish to help this native missionary work which is being so nobly carried on4 ,some of these women are really wonderful in their zeal and faithfulness1 walking six1 seven1 or eight miles to the meeting every week4 ,i could tell you many things about these faithful ,christian ,indian women1 but do you wish any better proof of the hold ,christianity has upon ,indians8 ,as ,i said before1 an ,indian woman's aspirations for herself are limited1 but she wants her child to grow up in the white people's way4 ,now1 if we are to elevate the ,indian nation1 let us plant in the homes the desire for the ,gospel1 and as we do it gather the children as fast as they are old enough to leave their mother's care into ,christian training schools4 ,now out in the ,indian country we are all the time carrying on missionary work in the homes1 planting schools1 organizing churches1 and sending out native missionaries4 ,we have at ,santee ,agency1 ,neb41 a large school of advanced grade1 well established for the education of children and youth4 ,so well known is this school among ,christian ,indians that our accommodations have become very limited1 and last year we were obliged to refuse many who wished to come4 ,i think you cannot know how hard it is for us to say1 ,we cannot take you4 ,the great ,dakota nation is ready to receive the ,christian religion4 ,we have the ,bible in the ,dakota language--a monument grand and beautiful to one who has just gone to his reward4 ,years of patient1 quiet toil were spent in translating the precious words from the ,greek and the ,hebrew into the language of over fifty thousand savages4 ,then what hinders the work8 ,we have hymns in the ,dakota tongue4 ,who will go and sing these precious words to those who never heard them8 ,there are those who are ready to go1 but where is the money to send them8 ,if you cannot go1 what hinders you from sending some one8 ,to be sure1 this is a work of difficulty1 for how can we expect a few years of training to so revolutionize a savage's live that he can withstand the heathenism which still permeates his native home8 ,but we have those whom we can trust1 and who are filling places of responsibility and usefulness4 ,besides those who have gone out as missionaries and teachers1 we have in our school at ,santee native teachers1 and our own children are taught by them4 ,one of our pupils is assistant matron in the ,dakota ,home4 ,one who has been under our care is in the little city of ,pierre1 ,d4 ,t41 giving music lessons to white pupils4 ,i give only a few instances1 to show that we are beginning to see the results of our work4 ,then give the free ,gospel of the love of ,christ to this great heathen nation right here so near us4 ,here is the ,bible1 here are the hymns2 who will provide the means to scatter them1 and who will go to carry them8 ,we are preparing those who will go with you as assistants and interpreters4 ,we hear of those who wish to get rid of the ,indians2 the surest way to do it is to educate them and ,christianize them4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,chinese4 ,,extract ,,from ,,address ,,of ,,mrs4 ,w4 ,c4 ,,pond4 ,i will not waste time upon an introduction4 ,i will only say that ,i am glad to be among you2 glad that you are interested in the ,chinese work1 with which we have been connected so many years in ,california4 ,we feel that we are greatly privileged in having these dark souls within our reach4 ,we can obey our ,saviour's last command1 ,disciple all nations1 without having to go far from our homes and native land4 ,they are with us and we have but to open our hearts and our churches to them and they will come in4 ,they are coming in2 not in large numbers but one by one4 ,in the church of which my husband has been the pastor for nearly ten years there are over seventy ,chinese members--about one-third of our whole membership4 ,many inquire how ,chinese converts are tested4 ,they join the ,christian ,association on probation and after a test of six or eight months are recommended to the church4 ,then they come before a committee of the church and are examined1 and after studying the articles of faith1 in their own language1 for several weeks they are propounded for church membership1 and if they prove satisfactory are baptized and come into full fellowship with the church4 ,they are not hurried into the church and are themselves timid and prefer to wait4 ,we have no work among the ,chinese women that we can call our own4 ,both ,presbyterians and ,methodists have such a work in ,san ,francisco1 and it divides into very little sections what can be at best but a small work1 because there are only three or four hundred ,chinese women in ,san ,francisco1 and not a tenth of these accessible4 ,but if means would allow we would be glad to attempt a work among the women at ,sacramento1 where nothing is done for them4 ,with our very limited resources we can save more by working among the thousands of men and boys4 ,but we have much work by women of whom ,i would like to make mention4 ,patient and heroic1 prayerful and soul-saving have been their efforts among the ,chinese4 ,i would like to tell you of one who has recently gone to her reward4 ,before leaving my home two months ago ,i called upon her and found her strength failing4 ,but she was hopeful respecting her recovery1 and the strongest incentive she had to get well was that she might have more opportunities to tell the story of ,jesus to her boys1 as she called those in the ,chinese school4 ,and when death came to her1 six ,chinese acted as pall-bearers at her funeral1 at her own request4 ,the church was more than half filled with ,chinese1 and the scene was touching in the extreme1 as one by one they went to look upon her face for the last time4 ,you are all1 doubtless1 more or less familiar with the ,american ,missionary1 and read from time to time ,mr4 ,pond's reports found therein4 ,i will give a few statistics quoted from my husband's report1 read recently before the ,general ,association of ,california1 convened in ,santa ,cruz4 ,they are as follows3 ,nineteen schools1 as against #ae the last year2 total enrollment of scholars1 #b1hbc1 as against #b1efg the former year2 #dj teachers1 of whom #ad were ,chinese1 as against #ca teachers the previous year1 of the former year1 and the whole number of those who have turned to ,christ during the history of the ,mission1 #djj1 who are scattered over the ,united ,states and in ,china4 ,we hear of many of them who are doing good work for the ,master and for the salvation of their countrymen4 ,toward the expense of the ,mission during the past year the ,chinese themselves have contributed #gcj4je4 ,i would like to have you remember the name of our church4 ,it is ,bethany4 ,remember us in your prayers1 for ,god has laid a great work upon us4 ,we started in much weakness1 but ,god has been with us and blessed us4 ,we have felt ,his presence in our ,bethany as ,martha and ,mary of old did in theirs4 ,we have heard the ,master's voice saying unto us frequently1 ,inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these1 ,my brethren1 ye have done it unto ,me4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,mountain ,,white ,,work ,,in ,,kentucky4 ,,by ,,mrs4 ,a4 ,a4 ,,myers4 ,there is an unnoticed class of people dwelling almost in the very centre of the settled portion of the ,united ,states4 ,our brother in black has been held up to the view of two continents for the last fifty years4 ,and what is ,america going to do with him and for him1 has been a question which has interested the whole civilized world4 ,this same question for a still longer time has been propounded in regard to the red man of the forest1 and in later years concerning the ,chinese4 ,and right nobly has the ,christian brotherhood evidenced its purpose to make men of these degraded classes4 ,but until recently it has escaped the notice of these ,christian workers that we have another class as needy perhaps as any4 ,no spice of romance is connected with them4 ,no barbarous tale of cruelty could be told to awaken sympathy in them4 ,they are simply poor people1 who during slavery were unable to obtain large plantations and so were driven by the arrogant ,bluegrass slaveholder on the one side1 and the greedy cotton-planter on the other1 back into the mountains1 where they are shut away from the rest of the world by mountain barriers1 and still more hopelessly by the haughty caste spirit of the slave-holding monarchs1 who disdain to have anything to do with them except to seek their votes4 ,these people are not really poor4 ,most of them own farms of three or four hundred acres2 and the soil1 if properly tilled1 would be quite productive4 ,their plowing is done in the most primitive manner4 ,a single horse attached to a little shovel plow simply tears the sod a little1 enough so the weeds spring up luxuriantly1 and the women and children must work hard in the hot sun to destroy them1 while the lord of the home saddles his horse and rides to town1 to sit on store boxes and tell low stories4 ,this people1 especially the male portion1 seem to have a natural distaste for labor4 ,they would be aristocratic if they could4 ,in days of slavery they had their household servants1 and tried to imitate the more wealthy slave-owners by living in idleness1 and they still look upon labor as degrading4 ,they make no effort to get themselves homes4 ,the large majority live in log cabins1 with no windows4 ,the doors stand open winter and summer4 ,the women in cool weather always sit with a little shawl around them and a sunbonnet on4 ,there are generally two rooms to each house1 usually with a chimney or open hall between them1 so you have to go out of doors to pass from one to the other4 ,in the kitchen 7which also serves as dining-room7 is a large fireplace and a cook stove1 if they are the happy possessors of one4 ,the other is the sitting and sleeping-room4 ,you will often see three beds and one or two trundle-beds in a single room4 ,here the whole family and all the visitors sleep4 ,we have sought to rest with thirteen of us in a room1 perhaps #ae by #bj feet1 and not a window in it and the doors shut4 ,fortunately the large-mouthed fireplace gave a pittance of ventilation4 ,no carpets are used1 and furniture is very limited4 ,i believe nine-tenths of the people could put all their goods on a couple of loads and be ready to move at an hour's notice4 ,families are large1 numbering twelve1 fifteen or even nineteen children4 ,girls marry young1 and seem to be entirely satisfied with their condition4 ,you seldom hear a desire expressed for anything they don't possess4 ,give them a box of snuff and a stick to chew it with and you never hear a murmur escape their lips4 ,tobacco is indispensable4 ,old and young1 male and female1 are wedded to it4 ,i have known of an old gentleman working all day for fifty cents and spending forty cents at night for tobacco for himself and wife and nine children4 ,they seem to be without a standard in the land4 ,they live so isolated1 and have measured themselves by themselves until they have lost all idea of accurate judgment4 ,morality and sobriety are hardly looked for1 even among church members and ministers4 ,religion may be up to fever heat1 while morality is down to zero4 ,people confess1 as they call it1 and join the church1 and in their entire life thereafter you could never know any difference4 ,they are satisfied if their names are on the church book4 ,i don't think they ever question their eternal salvation after they are once inside a church4 ,if a person dies without having joined a church his friends frame some theory on which they rest their hope of his salvation4 ,a young man was shot a little while ago in a drunken broil4 ,as he fell mortally wounded he cried1 ,oh1 ,lord6 ,his mother is sure he is safe because he called on the ,lord4 ,they have no conception of living religion4 ,they have no prayer or conference meetings4 ,aside from our own ,i doubt if there is a prayer meeting nearer than ,berea1 seventy miles away4 ,there is no family prayer in all the land4 ,i asked my class of boys1 twenty or more in number1 how many had ever heard their mothers' voice in prayer4 ,not one of them could raise a hand4 ,at another school ,i asked a still larger class the same question1 and only one girl raised her hand4 ,there is no gathering of the little home nestlings together and instructing them--no ,bible instruction given in the family4 ,it has ceased to be a wonder to me1 to ask nearly grown boys some of the most simple ,bible questions1 and hear them answer1 ,i don't know4 ,an ,m4 ,e4 minister in one of his pastoral visits took occasion to dwell with some stress on the blessedness of walking in the light4 ,the mother showed how she literalized by promptly remarking1 ,yes2 ,i've told ,john ,i wanted a hole sawed in this end of the house1 but he won't do it4 ,during the same call he asked a young lady if she was preparing to go to judgment4 ,she replied1 ,no1 ,i reckin ,i won't go4 ,if ,i do ,i'll have to walk1 for we hain't got but two nags1 and ,rachel and ,becky always ride them4 ,the prevailing churches are the ,reform or ,campbellites1 the ,methodists1 and the ,missionary and ,anti-,missionary ,baptists4 ,the latter church is strong all through the mountains4 ,they are bigoted and ignorant1 and boast that their knowledge comes direct from the throne1 and they have nothing to do with man-made theories1 as they call education4 ,their preaching is a sort of canting reiteration of the text and what few ,scripture verses they chance to know and some hackneyed expressions4 ,they are great on arguing1 and it would be laughable if it was not so pitiful to hear the profound questions they discuss4 ,last season one of these preachers nearly broke up one of our mission ,sunday-,schools1 which we could attend only each alternate ,sabbath4 ,in the passage that reads ,and anon they tell ,him1 he contended that ,a-non was an angel1 and they referred to the angel ,a-non4 ,each ,sunday when we were not there that important question had to be discussed4 ,one of these same preachers took his children from school because they were taught the heresy in geography that the world is round4 ,they do all they can to prejudice the people against our work4 ,they call our religion railroad religion4 ,they are great barriers in our way4 ,still we have been cheered this year to see that their hold on the young people is loosening1 and we are getting their hearts in spite of the protests of their parents4 ,one of our mission ,sunday-,schools1 which has averaged this season one hundred1 is composed almost entirely of young people and children1 seldom ever a parent there4 ,the ,smith ,american ,organ ,co4 have honored ,god and themselves1 and will ever be held by some hearts in grateful remembrance by their gift to that society of a new organ4 ,i have some times thought1 as ,i have heard the young voices ring out with such enthusiasm1 that1 though critics might smile at our endeavor1 ,heaven would not disdain our offering of praise4 ,the dingy low walls1 the glass-less windows1 the tobacco besmeared floor1 become transformed to a holy temple1 where ,god deigned to make visible ,his presence1 and it has been a sacred place4 ,our hope of this people centres largely in the young4 ,if it were not for them1 we could not feel it right to stay among them4 ,another barrier to be overcome is their habits of worship4 ,they have meetings but once a month during the summer and none at all during the winter4 ,when they have service it is more for a visit than worship4 ,their churches are rough log houses1 and so small that the greater part of the congregation remain out of doors4 ,four or more ministers are always in attendance1 and all must preach4 ,the congregation expect a tiresome time1 and from the first are restless4 ,they go out and come in1 and they keep a constant march to and from the water pail1 which usually sits on the desk in front of the speaker4 ,several grown people at a time will be standing waiting on each other at the pail4 ,the speaker seems to be used to such things1 and not at all disconcerted4 ,nearly all their services are funeral services for those who may have been dead for years4 ,they bury their dead the same day or the day following death4 ,they have no religious service1 except a prayer at the grave1 if there chance to be a minister present4 ,generally about a year after death1 but often from five to fifteen years after1 they have the funeral sermon preached4 ,in regard to healthfulness of our mountain home1 we have felt somewhat disappointed4 ,up so high1 with nice springs and spring streams1 one would expect a healthy climate4 ,on the contrary1 almost every one is ailing4 ,coughs and colds are universal4 ,it is no wonder the natives are unhealthy2 their habits of living would seem to prohibit health4 ,they eat corn bread or hoe cake and bacon2 some have flour1 but it is always made up into hot biscuit1 shortened with lard4 ,they have this1 with little variation1 three times a day1 #cfe days in a year4 ,in summer1 green beans cooked with bacon is added to the bill of fare4 ,of course the blood becomes impoverished1 and almost every one has scrofula4 ,calomel and pills are the great panacea for all their bodily ills4 ,pills are brought on by the quart1 and sold by the merchants like any other commodity4 ,cleanliness of the person is an unheard of luxury2 ,i doubt whether they ever bathe4 ,children come to the table with unwashed faces4 ,they are put to bed with the same clothes they wear during the day4 ,then add to all this the fact that tobacco is used almost from the cradle1 and whiskies and toddies from the time the poor child opens its eyes to this world1 and it's no great marvel that gray-haired men are exceedingly rare1 and it's the old man and the old woman when one has reached the age of twenty-five4 ,now comes the question1 ,what are we doing for the people8 ,we have been with them nearly two years1 and this has been our effort from the first1 to get them to see that religion is a life rather than a sectarian belief4 ,we have sought to impress upon them that joining a church is not ,christianity4 ,we have succeeded in getting a few to take part in our prayer meetings1 and we have the assurance that all the people are awaking to the fact that ,god has some demands upon them4 ,we have from the first kept up regular ,thursday night prayer meetings2 have had good attendance1 but often only ,mr4 ,myers and myself to take part in them except as others read ,scripture verses4 ,on the ,sabbath we have ,sunday-school at #i3cj4 ,average attendance1 #ajj2 preaching at #aa4 ,i hasten home1 saddle my horse1 and ride six miles to the next railroad station 7,pleasant ,view74 ,here ,i have met #ajj or more young people4 ,i have been surprised that in a land where a woman isn't expected to know anything1 or be anything but a doll or a drudge that there has been so little prejudice against my school4 ,some1 of course1 have thought a woman entirely out of her sphere to undertake such work and have taken occasion to remark to my friends3 ,why1 ,mrs4 ,myers opens the school by prayer1 just as ,mr4 ,myers would4 ,i don't know but it's all right1 but it don't seem just the proper thing for a woman to do4 ,mr4 ,m4 has a mission in ,south ,williamsburg or the mills1 where numbers of children are growing up in the midst of gambling and shooting4 ,prof4 ,w4 has1 about the same hour1 a school two miles out in another direction4 ,at night we have services again in ,williamsburg4 ,at these services we have more than can get into the house1 and many are obliged to leave for lack of accommodation4 ,tuesday nights we go to ,pleasant ,view and help them learn the ,gospel ,songs4 ,each alternate ,wednesday evening1 church socials2 each alternate ,friday afternoon1 ,band of ,hope2 ,saturday evening1 choir drill2 ,covenant ,meeting once a month on ,saturday afternoon4 ,mr4 ,myers has preached during the year beginning with ,oct4 '#hb1 one hundred and forty-two sermons4 ,the services1 together with the other public services just mentioned1 have amounted to three hundred and forty4 ,have attended fifty or more meetings conducted by others4 ,we spend all the remaining time our strength will permit in calling at the homes4 ,we have a neat modern church nearly finished1 and so far without foreign help4 ,but no one knows what an effort has been required4 ,mr4 ,myers would announce a working bee to draw stone or any such work2 would try to enthuse the people as he has so often done in the ,north4 ,but when the time would come he has worked all day alone4 ,we have learned at last that this people don't enthuse4 ,we are hard at work in our high-school enterprise4 ,we have ,prof4 and ,mrs4 ,w4 and ,miss ,g41 all from the ,north1 with us4 ,we hope to get a school1 the good influence of which will never die out of these mountains4 ,these are peculiar people4 ,what ,i have said of them has reference to the general class of society4 ,but there are some who seem of better stock1 who are shrewd1 keen1 far-sighted people4 ,you cannot find their superiors in native ability in any country4 ,though often lacking in culture and morality1 they still hold a wide influence over the rest1 so that something besides goodness is required in those who wish to come among them as helpers4 ,there must be ability to adapt oneself to these widely diverse conditions4 ,one needs wisdom and tact to get along with the shrewdest1 and such a love for souls that he can come with a helping hand to the most degraded1 nor be discouraged if1 with a heart brimful of sympathy1 he reaches the hand a long time only to see it rejected by those most in need4 ,the work is a work of time4 ,the majority of the people are unstable1 thriftless improvident and ignorant4 ,slavery left its blight of impotency and profligacy upon them4 ,they come and go as did their fathers a hundred years ago4 ,their tools and utensils are the same their great-grandparents used1 and they are content with them4 ,we never worked harder and saw less result in the conversion of sinners than while in ,kentucky1 and yet never felt more satisfied that we were where ,god wants us1 and doing an important work4 ,unless these people have help they will prove a fretting leprosy in our nation4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,work ,,among ,,the ,,colored ,,people ,,of ,,the ,,south4 ,,by ,,miss ,,ida ,m4 ,,beach4 ,no small part of the work undertaken by the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 is that among the colored people of the ,south4 ,perhaps we may judge something of how vast this work is in itself1 and how far-reaching in its results1 if we consider for a few moments the numbers and condition of the colored people4 ,twenty years ago about #d1jjj1jjj people were liberated from bondage1 with all the evils resulting from the system of slavery resting upon them4 ,there was great rejoicing among lovers of freedom when the ,proclamation of ,emancipation was issued4 ,the slaves themselves1 wild with joy1 shouted1 ,we're free6 ,we're free6 ,the year of jubilee has come6 ,free6 yes1 free6 but with the burdens of manhood and womanhood suddenly thrust upon them4 ,freedom brought the right and opportunity of establishing homes4 ,glorious privilege6 ,but do we not all know how much good judgment and wisdom and thought and planning it takes to maintain a true home8 ,freedom gave them the right of keeping their little ones and seeing them grow to manhood and womanhood1 but oh6 how much of patience and ,god-given power it requires to train the little feet to tread the right way6 ,four million people1 half civilized1 uneducated1 untrained1 with the judgment and reason of children1 hitherto knowing little of the ways of the outer world1 suddenly brought into life's conflicts6 ,what an amount of instruction they needed6 ,right here the ,american ,missionary ,association stepped in and assumed the work of training these people4 ,christian men and women1 filled with love for the ,master1 went down among these lowly ones4 ,they carried the ,gospel of ,jesus ,christ1 established schools and churches1 teaching in the open air1 or in rude huts and deserted cabins4 ,for twenty years this work has been carried on1 and much good has been done in the name of the ,lord4 ,but to-day there are between six and seven million colored people in our ,southland4 ,the work of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 together with all done by other societies and by students going forth from the colleges as teachers1 as yet scarcely begins to reach this great number4 ,their first need is to be ,christianized1 for this alone lifts them up and gives a desire for better things4 ,it is the religion of ,jesus ,christ alone which has given to us our high estate4 ,how much we owe to the training of ,christian mothers6 ,let us pity and stoop to lift up these ignorant ones4 ,send out those who can carry the glad tidings and point to the ,lamb of ,god1 who taketh away the sin of the world4 ,let us do all we can to teach them what the pure religion is4 ,but we cannot stop here4 ,we must teach them how to use it4 ,woman's work for woman1 surely1 for this must be done in the homes4 ,freedom gave them the right to establish homes6 ,they did the best they knew how1 many of them1 but they needed teaching--they need it to-day4 ,they must be taught thrift and industry1 and cleanliness and order4 ,they want someone to come to them and help them to transform their huts into homes4 ,could you see their rags1 their ugly1 misshapen garments1 you would agree with me that the women and girls greatly need to be taught the use of the needle4 ,of course ,christian schools need to be multiplied among them1 where the rudiments of an ,english education shall be thoroughly given1 where sewing and cooking1 the care of the house and the care of the sick shall be carefully taught the girls1 where the boys may learn the use of tools and all that pertains to good farming4 ,our stronghold is the children4 ,we can never eradicate the evils existing among the older generation4 ,slavery left too much ignorance and superstition to ever be driven from the minds of those who lived under its sway4 ,but we are responsible for the coming generations4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association aims to reach the young and meet their needs by the workers sent out4 ,perhaps our work in ,savannah will be illustrative of that done in many other parts of the field4 ,we have there established a church and school4 ,there are now in school over #bjj pupils4 ,the majority of these remain long enough with us to obtain a good common-school education4 ,we have also a normal grade1 where methods of teaching are taught those who desire to fit themselves for teachers4 ,besides this we have fitted up a sewing-room1 where the girls learn every part of sewing and repairing1 cutting and basting4 ,many schools have shops for boys2 we look forward to the time when we may be able to have them1 too4 ,we are just establishing a reading-room4 ,those who have read ,prof4 ,salisbury's article in the ,november ,,missionary understand how much this is needed4 ,in our present circumstances we arrange it so that all pupils of higher grades have a daily reading hour1 with teacher to direct4 ,then once in two weeks the older pupils meet for a social reading4 ,in our devotional exercises and school prayer meetings we aim to assist them in a knowledge of true religion4 ,last year we observed the ,week of ,prayer1 and in the daily meetings held for several weeks some found the way to ,christ and ,christian life4 ,our ,church and ,sunday-,school work reaches many who are not connected with our school4 ,we have a devoted missionary who spends her time in visiting the parents and children in their homes1 ministering to the wants of the sick and needy1 and holding ,bible and ,missionary meetings4 ,this is a bare outline of our work4 ,i presume many of you are saying4 ,have there been no results during these last twenty years8 ,oh yes1 we have a bright side to the picture4 ,when we are tired and discouraged1 and wonder if harvest time will never come1 we go to some of the pleasant homes where great changes have been wrought4 ,we point to a scholar and tell her past history1 and then thank ,god that the seed sown found a lodging place and good soil4 ,in the cities when the large schools are1 and where there are fair public schools--where there is constant contact with civilized life1 many of the colored people live well4 ,yet there may be a neat1 cosy home just across the street1 and a few doors beyond1 a wretched hovel4 ,in the country1 when the ,teachers' ,home and little school house are built beside their log cabins1 they catch a glimpse of better things than they have known4 ,the modest house1 freshly painted1 with the neat1 cosy rooms inside--very simple and plain to us--seems like a palace to them4 ,they begin to want the same4 ,the children go to school and come home with wonderful things to tell4 ,faces and hands become clean1 the woolly heads are more carefully combed1 rents are mended1 the girls put on clean collars4 ,the missionary shows the women how to fashion home-made lounges and stools1 they are covered with some bright calico1 the floor is scrubbed white1 and they begin to live4 ,the teacher says that they must work if they want to have homes1 money begins to be saved1 and before you know it little frame houses are going up beside the old cabin4 ,a good horse or mule1 with a bright shiny buggy1 takes the place of the old steer and cart4 ,yes1 indeed1 much has been accomplished4 ,but we had very few workers in the early days among four million people1 although just as many as could be supported with the means furnished1 and to-day1 among nearly seven millions1 we have but #ccf workers4 ,millions sit in darkness right here in our own land4 ,a mighty work is to be done1 and the work in ,africa must be done largely by these people1 too4 ,we need more money2 ,christian men and women to go forth1 and ,christian men and women who are willing to send them4 ,the harvest truly is plenteous1 but the laborers are few4 ,pray ye therefore the ,lord of the harvest that he will send forth laborers into explains to you the necessity for the organization of a ,bureau of ,woman's ,work4 ,it was organized in ,april1 #ahhc1 for the purpose1 as was then stated3 #a4 ,to give information to the ladies in the churches of the variety of work sustained by the ,association and to assist in devising plans of help4 #b4 ,to promote correspondence with churches1 ,sabbath-schools1 missionary societies or individuals who will undertake work of a special character1 such as the support of missionaries1 aiding of students1 supplying clothing1 furnishing goods1 and meeting other wants on mission ground4 #c4 ,to send to the churches1 conferences or associations desiring it1 experienced and intelligent lady missionaries to address them1 giving fuller details of our methods of work4 ,it was believed that the growing interest on the part of the ladies of our churches1 and their evident disposition to aid more effectively in the elevation of women1 particularly the women of the ,south1 called for ,sunday-school of the ,central ,congregational ,church1 ,brooklyn4 ,supplies in the furnishing of ,mission ,homes and dormitories have been recently furnished1 and there is very marked increase of aid in the furnishing of clothing1 both new and second-hand1 for the benefit of students who are struggling in the greatest poverty to obtain an education4 ,while1 therefore1 but a few months have elapsed since the organization of the ,bureau of ,woman's ,work1 its advantage is already manifest4 ,since the field of missionary operations in our own country is large and diversified1 and three leading societies exist1 each having its distinct and important work1--viz43 ,the ,new ,west ,education ,commission1 the ,american ,home ,missionary ,society1 and the ,american ,missionary ,association--no effort has been made by the ,american ,missionary ,association to organize local societies auxiliary to itself2 but that a society should exist in every church1 able to co-operate directly with this ,association in its great work for the ,chinese1 the ,indians1 the negroes and the needy whites of the ,south1 seems apparent4 ,to this end we urge upon the ladies1 organization1 as helpful to systematic giving1 and to facilitate such movement we present a form of constitution for a co-operative society1 that may be open to the call from all parts of our country4 ,this we greatly prefer as avoiding complication and preserving fellowship and unity in the home work4 ,such is the pressure of claims upon us1 however1 through the needs of our field1 that except as such opportunity is afforded for aid to the ,am4 ,miss4 ,assoc41 we feel that we may be constrained to ask for organization auxiliary to the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 exclusively--for the women and children of #f1jjj1jjj of colored people of the ,south alone presents a field for missionary work in the elevation of women1 which we must not ignore1 from the responsibility of which we cannot escape4 ,we are just now entering upon a new year of work4 ,of the #age ladies appointed to the various departments of missionary labor1 twelve are engaged for special home visitation among the people4 ,you can see at a glance that this number is insufficient for that line of duty4 ,although our teachers are missionaries1 and accomplish much through the schools and various agencies set at work for the elevation of the people1 yet we ought to have at least one experienced and efficient woman at every mission station1 whose entire time should be given to special work in the homes of the people4 ,not only do we desire this1 but the most urgent appeals are sent us from the field for help of this kind1 not instead of that which we are doing in school and church1 but supplementary to it1 as necessary in securing the results we seek4 ,already fifteen applications are before us for lady missionaries to work in the homes1 and we wait only for the women of the ,north to furnish us the necessary funds4 ,as fast as we receive pledges of support the missionaries will be sent out4 ,may the heart of every ,christian woman be quickened to new impulse for the development of womanhood in those in our own land1 so degraded and prayer1 and in raising funds for missionary work in this country4 ,,art4 #c4 ,the officers of this ,society shall be a ,president1 a ,vice-,president1 a ,secretary1 a ,treasurer1 and an ,executive learn--to see how fares our cause in these churches4 ,especially ,i sought to learn how strong a hold the work of the ,american ,missionary ,association has upon the sympathy and effort of the ,christian ladies of that section1 what organized system of helpfulness they already have in this line1 or what in their judgment can be done and will be done toward incorporating this work in their regular plan of missionary operations for each year4 ,as ,i expected1 ,i found the interest in our cause in various stages of development4 ,it is not strange that in some places the ladies did not even so much as know that there was a ,woman's ,bureau4 ,the ,bureau is in its infancy1 and the fact of its existence has not yet taken hold of us all in any practical way4 ,in many churches--not by any means always the larger ones--,i found an intelligent appreciation of the needs and claims of the ,south4 ,we have had many workers from these ,states of the ,west1 or rather of the ,interior1 and when ,i had the pleasure of going into a community that had sent out one or more to the work in some part of our field1 ,i found always an enthusiastic interest and a warm response to my appeals4 ,my introduction to the warm-hearted ,christian people of ,wisconsin was at the ,state ,association1 met at ,racine ,sept4 #bd4 ,finding on my arrival a large representation of ladies gathered to celebrate the anniversary of their ,foreign ,missionary ,society1 ,i felt sure that there must be also an active sympathy for the work in our own land1 and ,i was not disappointed4 ,on the following day1 at a special gathering of the ladies1 a ,state society was organized1 whose range of objects should include all the benevolent societies of our denomination1 working in this country1 leaving conferences and local organizations at liberty to contribute through one treasurer or several treasurers1 to any of these societies4 ,after attending this gathering of the tribes it was my privilege to go by invitation to a few of the towns in southern ,wisconsin4 ,of course the ,state organization has not yet stretched out its arms over the ,state in the formation of local societies4 ,i can but think that ,beloit1 ,whitewater1 ,geneva and ,kenosha will be among the first to take definite steps in this direction4 ,wisconsin has by special contributions from her ladies supported a missionary in the ,south for several years and is still doing so4 ,when through regular channels of organization they shall make this a part of their regular yearly charity1 the arrangement can be more permanently relied upon by the ,woman's ,bureau4 ,many1 ,i think1 will endorse the sentiment of a prominent lady in ,michigan who said to me3 ,i think the ladies of each one of these ,western ,states ought to support one or more teacher-missionaries under the ,association4 ,on the #ith of ,october1 at ,grand ,rapids1 ,i joined the representative of the ,woman's ,department of the ,american ,home ,missionary ,society1 with whom the longer tour of six weeks was to be made in ,michigan4 ,we were then on our way to the ,grand ,river ,conference at ,allendale1 where we found a hearty welcome4 ,in this ,conference there is a branch of the ,state ,woman's ,home ,missionary ,society1 a society already more than a year old and organized on the same broad platform as that adopted in ,wisconsin4 ,before the meeting of the ,southern ,michigan ,conference we were able to visit1 in rapid succession1 the churches at ,middleville1 ,vermontville1 and ,olivet1 in all of which an evident sympathy in the various forms of our work led me to hope that increased effort might result from this new presentation of our needs4 ,in the ,southern ,conference we found also a branch organization1 union in its character1 and so efficiently officered that all is likely to be done that can be accomplished through it4 ,nowhere did ,i find stancher friends for our ,christian educational work in the ,south than in this conference4 ,at this point a short break occurred in our ,michigan tour4 ,a rapid journey brought us to ,lake ,city in time to spend one day at the ,minnesota ,state ,association--just to grasp the hands of our ,minnesota friends and be assured of their continued helpfulness4 ,the ,woman's ,home ,missionary ,society voted that at the next annual meeting the constitution should be reconsidered1 with a view to enlarging its borders and including all the benevolent societies of our home work4 ,the giving of a year's notice before any change can be made is required by the constitution itself4 ,we took up the work in ,michigan again at ,st4 ,joseph1 and from there went to the ,kalamazoo ,association4 ,we found here1 as elsewhere1 that these autumn conferences are generally held with the smaller and less accessible churches1 where the attendance of ladies is necessarily limited1 and we must1 therefore1 give our message to the pastors1 charging them with the responsibility of carrying it to the ladies of their churches4 ,before the next conference we were able to take in our plan the central points1 ,jackson1 ,ann ,arbor1 ,flint and ,lansing1 and when we went up from there to ,nashville to the ,marshall ,conference we felt that we were meeting old friends in the pastors and people1 at whose homes we had already been4 ,another tour through ,kalamazoo1 ,allegan1 ,owosso1 ,port ,huron1 ,st4 ,clair1 ,detroit1 ,union ,city and ,chelsea brought us much the same experiences as before4 ,we came finally to the large ,eastern ,conference1 which was to be our last place of labor in ,michigan4 ,the ladies of this ,conference1 though not yet organized for home work under the ,state society1 for several years supported a missionary in the ,south1 largely through the personal effort of one active lady1 who made this special collection her care4 ,with the closing of this ,bureau visit to the ladies of ,michigan the work is left in their hands--not to be forgotten by them1 but to be developed and strengthened until there shall be a rich annual fruitage of effort and practical result4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,children',s ,,page4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,christmas ,,giving ,,at ,,mystic1 ,,conn4 ,,rev4 ,,charles ,h4 ,,oliphant4 ,the ,editor has asked me to give some account of the way our ,sunday-school behaves itself at ,christmas-time4 ,there are two ideas about the ,church2 and as parents feel and think about the ,church the children will be pretty sure to think and feel about the ,sunday-school4 ,one conception of the ,church is that it is a kind of receptacle for pious people4 ,when one becomes good enough he is expected to get into this receptacle and there be acted upon by the means of grace4 ,it is one of the mischiefs of this notion that it seems to excuse laymen from any active part in ,christian work1 if only they are regular attendants upon divine service4 ,so1 many people come to the preaching and the praying as if there were nothing for them to do1 nothing either great or small4 ,such members may be said to be found in the passive voice4 ,the other and better notion is that the ,church is not a receptacle1 but an engine2 not a box for ,christians to get into1 but a body for them to operate1 and through which ,christ can act upon the world of to-day4 ,according to this view1 the minister is not the only member whom the ,master has called into ,his vineyard1 the ideal ,church is not so much a company of sheep as a company of soldiers2 the congregation comes together not simply to hear ,mr4 ----1 but to organize for work4 ,this may be called the ,church's active voice4 ,i cannot 7within the verbal limits assigned me7 measure the miles of distance which lie between these two views4 ,the same confusion of thought prevails in the ,sunday-school4 ,we know how the small boy finds that ,sunday-school the most attractive 7and that teacher the nicest7 whose ,christmas-tree pays the largest dividend4 ,illustration3 ,,children ,,bearing ,,christmas ,,gifts ,when ,i came to my present field of work it had been the immemorial custom to have a tree and a treat for the children of the school4 ,after a year or two of competition with other schools in making it worth while for children to attend our own1 we braced up and put the question to vote whether we would make the ,christmas festival a feast for ourselves or a feast for others2 whether we would have our school at this time a dispenser of sweetmeats and ourselves the beneficiaries1 or dispense a gift instead to some more needy servants of the ,master1 who had no parental pocketbook to tap2 no good things to give away4 ,to the surprise of all the vote was unanimous against the old1 and in favor of the new1 way4 ,there was much misgiving as to results4 ,many confidently predicted that the offerings 7each class was invited to bring its own in a sealed envelope7 would be microscopic4 ,it was distinctly understood that no money--not the smallest sum--was asked from those who disapproved the plan4 ,teachers were urged to dissuade their classes from perfunctory gifts4 ,inquiring next for a suitable object1 we were advised by the ,home ,missionary ,society of a poor servant of theirs in a ,western ,state1 whose poorer and more to be pitied wife was the mother of seven children4 ,we put her to vote1 and she was promptly and unanimously chosen4 ,with the introduction into the plan of a personal element1 enthusiasm began1 and it became evident at once that there was to be sharp rivalry between the classes as to the size of their gifts4 ,at length came the ,christmas ,eve concert1 and with it a bright1 full company of children4 ,they never looked so happy1 and every one of them knows that he never was so happy on such an occasion1 as when1 class by class1 the offerings were handed to the ,superintendent4 ,with each of these a passage of ,scripture was recited4 ,it became only too evident1 as the pile within his hand increased1 that the prognostications of those who were sure that an old ,sunday-school could not be taught new tricks were false4 ,we are a small school--only #hj scholars--but the class offerings on this occasion footed up twenty-eight dollars and some cents4 ,a letter was accordingly written and the money inclosed to the wife 7this was the best part of it1 for we were sure that the minister could not then1 as ministers will1 mistake the remittance for a portion of his salary71 who was asked to purchase with the amount some article or articles of which she was individually in need4 ,the letter which came back to us after a week made those who heard it read in open school clear their throats and wink away an inevitable tear4 ,it revealed 7among other things7 the fact that this poor servant had hitherto made all the clothing for seven children with the bare needle4 ,now she has a sewing machine4 ,we all think1 but none more fervently than the children1 that the memory of a few oranges1 more or less--oranges eaten three years ago--would not compensate for the glad consciousness that life is easier every day in at least one prairie home4 ,thus we were led to translate the ,beatitude pronounced upon the giver into our own experience1 and we have its meaning in the continuous stream of happiness which many have felt at the remembrance of what our pennies wrought4 ,we have recently chosen an object for this year's offering2 for the practice of giving and not receiving at ,christmas-time is now habitual with us4 ,dr4 ,pike has told us about ,philip ,page1 the ,african lad now at ,atlanta1 seeking eagerly1 but with insufficient means1 such an education as will qualify him to go back to his people a missionary4 ,we shall send him enough for his support for one1 and perhaps for two months4 ,let me urge those who may read these words to allow no seeming obstacle to prevent the putting in practice1 in the schools to which they belong1 of the plan here described4 ,do not fail to give the children for their ,christmas gift the happiness that giving brings4 ,do not delay to teach the young by so simple a lesson the difference between the blessedness
