,ky41 bore the following testimony to the strength and value of the negroes of the ,south3 ,forty years ago the race had nothing2 now property in the hands of the negro has an assessed valuation of nearly five hundred million dollars4 ,not a few individuals are worth seventy-five thousand to one hundred thousand dollars4 ,forty years ago it was a violation of the law to teach a negro2 now there are thousands of children in good schools2 and there are two hundred higher institutes of learning for negroes1 with an attendance of two hundred thousand or more4 ,there are many successful teachers1 editors1 lawyers1 doctors and ministers who are negroes4 ,all these professions are fully and ably represented here1 in conservative and aristocratic ,lexington1 and as regards these men and women there is no race problem4 ,worth1 honesty1 clear knowledge1 self-respect and independent support lie at the foundation of any citizenship1 white or black4 ,may these young graduates carry these with them into the life conflict1 and be the leaders of their race into the widest opportunities of free ,american citizenship4 ,sidenote3 ,splendid ,benefactions4 ,mr4 ,rossiter ,johnson has recently compiled a list of bequests to benevolent objects during the last year in the ,united ,states4 ,this is a remarkable showing4 ,the grand total is nearly sixty-three million dollars4 ,the year previous it reached the good sum of thirty-eight million1 and in #ahig1 forty-five million4 ,in three years1 therefore1 over one hundred and forty million dollars have been bestowed by generous men and women for charitable and educational objects4 ,there never has been a time in the history of the world when generosity and riches were so often held in possession of the same person as to-day4 ,sidenote3 its ,relation to ,his ,mental and ,moral ,development4 ,sidenote3 ,a ,useful ,record4 ,le,moyne ,normal ,institute1 at ,memphis1 ,tenn41 has just completed the twenty-ninth year of its history4 ,it was founded by the ,american ,missionary ,association in ,october1 #ahga4 ,the work of the school has grown into large proportions4 ,the enrollment of students for the year has numbered #gbe in all grades4 ,more than #bjj of these have studied in the normal department4 ,they are thus fitting themselves for teaching among their people in the public and private schools of the state4 ,the graduating class of #aijj consisted of twenty4 ,dr4 ,le,moyne1 of ,washington1 ,pa41 after whom the institute is named1 gave the ground and the buildings and the original outlay4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association has maintained the work during these twenty-nine years4 ,the ,alumni ,association of the institute has contributed generously in proportion to their means to the work at the school4 ,the ,alumni have been much interested in the development of the industrial department1 and have contributed for that purpose4 ,woodworking1 cooking and nursing classes will be conducted in the school next year1 offering still larger opportunities for the training of these young people for a larger and more useful life-work4 ,sidenote3 ,whittier ,high ,school4 ,the closing exercises of ,whittier ,high ,school were held in the ,congregational ,church1 on the #ahth of ,may4 ,this school is situated in the ,highlands of ,north ,carolina4 ,it reaches the young people of a considerable area1 and is an influence for large good among them4 ,among the speeches or essays presented at the closing exercises1 was one entitled3 ,the ,south1 ,her ,strength and ,weakness4 ,it is a hopeful sign that the young men of the ,south1 who are to be the leaders in their section1 are seriously considering these problems4 ,in the ,new ,south1 a large element of strength and progress will come from the educated young men of the ,highlands4 ,they are somewhat slow to be moved1 but are strong1 steadfast and courageous in the defense of that which they believe to be right1 when they do move4 ,sidenote3 ,grit that ,wins4 ,in one of our schools among the ,american ,highlanders a young mountaineer1 then scarcely out of his teens1 applied for membership4 ,when asked what funds he had to support him in his proposed study1 he replied3 ,only fifty cents4 ,he had dependent upon him two sisters1 a brother and his mother4 ,it seemed rather limited capital for such an undertaking4 ,he went to work1 however1 cutting logs1 built a log-cabin1 moved into it with his family1 and with an eagerness that can scarcely be appreciated by those who have had larger opportunities1 went to his study in the schoolroom4 ,it is not necessary to say that such grit and devotion won for him success4 ,he has fitted himself for ,christian instruction among his people1 and is rapidly becoming a leader4 ,this young man1 however1 is not an individual but a type of hundreds of such ,highland lads and lassies who are struggling with great self-sacrifice for an education in our ,american ,missionary ,association schools4 ,sidenote3 ,prepared for ,life ,work4 ,the graduating class from ,williamsburg ,academy1 ,kentucky1 numbers three4 ,they are all from the ,state of ,kentucky1 but from different counties4 ,the mountain people only are represented4 ,one contemplates the study of medicine next fall4 ,one expects to teach4 ,the other1 a young lady1 will probably remain at home for a time4 ,all are ,christians and in active ,christian work4 ,sidenote3 ,grand ,view ,institute1 ,tennessee4 ,this school1 among the ,highlanders1 has closed a most successful year4 ,the following item comes from the principal3 ,the young men have held a mid-week prayer meeting twice each week during the month4 ,these meetings were well attended1 and much interest was manifested4 ,at our last mid-week service1 before the closing of the school1 our little church was well filled1 and a large number took part in the service4 ,the topic for the evening was ',some of the benefits ,i have received during the school year in ,grand ,view4' ,the meeting was exceptionally impressive4 ,many of these students have1 during the year1 taken ,christ into their hearts and lives1 and this1 after all1 we feel is the 'one thing needful4' ,sidenote3 ,manual of ,savannah ,congregational ,district4 ,through the courtesy of the ,moderator1 the manual of this conference has been presented to the editor of the ,,missionary4 ,it contains the constitution and by-laws1 and a brief historical sketch of this group of churches in ,georgia4 ,it is an interesting document4 ,among other things1 it illustrates the desire of these churches to have an educated and upright ministry4 ,article ,,xii of their constitution reads1 in part1 as follows3 ,congregationalists have always believed in a ,godly and educated ministry4 ,to meet the wants of local conditions1 a three years' course of study shall be provided for in the by-laws1 for all who are not graduates of normal1 college preparatory or college classes4444 ,the by-laws shall provide a four years' course of conference study1 leading up to the printed certificate4 ,any person holding a printed certificate shall be addressed as ,reverend1 preach without annual examination1 on condition of good behavior1 and may be ordained if called by a church to be its pastor4444 ,ordained preachers coming to us from bodies having a lower standard shall pursue our four years' course of study and pass annual examinations1 if they are under fifty years of age4 ,this is certainly an earnest and systematic effort on the part of our brethren of these churches to establish higher educational and ethical standards on the part of the ministers in that state4 ,the benefit will accrue not only to our ,congregational ,churches1 but to all others in the state4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,indian ,,progress4 ,,by ,,rev4 ,c4 ,l4 ,,hall4 ,sidenote3 ,old and ,new4 ,on ,may #bfth there was a high wind over the prairie4 ,it hindered the carpenter who was trying to frame the bell-tower of the new chapel4 ,the chapel stands aloft in the center of the ,ree ,indian settlement4 ,it is a shining mark1 seen in the ,june sunlight1 for miles up and down the ,missouri bench lands4 ,the prairie around it is dotted with ,indian homes4 ,the winds could not stop the building nor overturn it4 ,other work the wind did finish4 ,that was the overthrow of the old heathen place of worship which stood a little more than a mile away from the new ,christian chapel4 ,neglected for several years1 it had been gradually disintegrating till the wind threw down the remains of the ruin4 ,the ,ree ,christian ,indians are now looking with satisfaction at the chapel which their own work has helped to build4 ,it is the center of a new religious and social order4 ,it illustrates1 also1 the co-operative work of the ,women's ,home ,missionary ,association1 ,church-,building ,society and the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,all of these had a helping hand in the building4 ,it takes all that all can do together to provide new and better things for the ,indian as their hold of and faith in the old pass away4 ,sidenote3 ,citizen ,indians4 ,the ,fort ,berthold ,indians have recently become voters4 ,the coming fall elections are important2 consequently the caucuses held this spring were of some moment4 ,in the county convention eleven delegates out of twenty-six were ,indians4 ,they might have a deciding vote of considerable consequence4 ,there was an effort to control the ignorant part of the community for private interests4 ,the better educated young men1 however1 were alive to their duty and opportunity1 and many of the older ones were sensible enough to put forward the younger and better informed to represent them4 ,the consequence was that when the delegates arrived at the county seat they were found to be an intelligent and well-dressed company1 who could understand what was going on4 ,two of them went from the county to the ,fargo state convention to nominate delegates to the national presidential convention4 ,one went to the judicial convention1 and two are to go to the coming state convention at ,grand ,forks to nominate state officers4 ,three of these delegates were from our ,santee school1 and one from ,hampton4 ,the testimony of political leaders is that the ,indian delegates made a good impression1 and were not led into the self-indulgences that disgraced some whites4 ,several years ago one of the older boys found it rather tiresome to study civil government in the mission school4 ,now he says to his teacher1 ,civil government is all right4 ,it always will be in the hand of intelligent people who want to do right--all colors included4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,light ,,and ,,shade4 ,,mrs4 ,,ida ,v4 ,,woodbury4 ,the title of this rambling sketch of ,southern travel does not refer1 as might be understood1 to the wonderful picturesqueness of the ,southern mountains and valleys1 their ever-varying beauty of sunshine and shadow1 nor to the spiritual1 moral or intellectual condition of the people2 but is a salutation1 embodying in its brevity an invitation to the stranger to dismount from his horse1 or step down from his carriage1 and rest himself beneath the shade of the trees4 ,light1 stranger1 light and shade1 is the laconic1 epigrammatic but cordial and hospitable greeting4 ,in response to such a salutation1 ,i lit from the buggy one afternoon a few weeks ago in front of a one-roomed1 windowless log hut in the ,kentucky mountains1 where lived a man1 his wife and eight children4 ,i was urged to set by1 so ,i went inside the house4 ,the mother was lying on a bed in the corner1 and ,i said to her1 ,are you sick8 7,you must never ask a mountaineer if he is ill1 that is equivalent to asking him if he is cross47 ,yes1 she said1 ,i'm powerful puny4 ,have you been sick long8 was my next question4 ,i've been punying around all winter4 ,has it been cold here8 ,yes1 mighty cold4 ,have you had any snow8 ,yes1 we've had a right smart of snow twicet1 and oncet it was pretty nigh shoe-mouth deep4 ,these people rarely admit that they are well4 ,the most you can expect is1 ,i'm tolerable1 only jest tolerable1 while often they say1 ,i'm powerful puny1 or nigh about plum sick4 ,and then with an air of extreme resignation1 for they seem to enjoy poor health1 they add1 ,we're all powerful puny humans4 ,we had supper on the night of which ,i write in one of these little cabins--the young missionary of the ,american ,missionary ,association and myself4 ,the conditions were very primitive1 the fare coarse1 but the welcome hearty1 the hospitality bountiful4 ,then we had a prayer-meeting in the church house1 and between fifty and sixty people were present4 ,the men dressed in homespun and blue jeans1 the women all with full-bordered cape bonnets and home-knit woolen mitts4 ,it is a great lack of form to go with the hands uncovered1 but the feet are often so2 and ,i will venture to say that the missionary and myself were the only persons in the church house whose mouths were not filled with tobacco1 a custom very much in evidence all through the meeting4 ,i talked to them of our work among the ,indians1 and after the meeting one man came to me and shook my hand right royally1 as he said1 ,i've never seen you before1 mum1 and ,i reckon ,i never shall see you again2 but we've been mightily holped up by what you've been saying1 and ,i reckon we ought to be doing something for them poor humans4 ,in his poverty1 in his need1 his heart went out to those who seemed to him to be in greater destitution4 ,as we went to our buggy at the close of the meeting1 the people gathered around to say goodbye1 and many were the kindly words and the ,god-speeds4 ,many1 too1 were the evidences of hospitality1 and one insisted that we should go home with him and spend the night4 ,he said3 ,it's a mighty long ride to the school1 and you'll be a mighty sight more comfortable to come back and sleep with us4 ,we had called at his house in the afternoon4 ,there were twelve people--father1 mother and ten children--in a windowless1 one-roomed cabin1 in which were three beds ranged side by side4 ,just what sleeping accommodations they were going to give us ,i do not know4 ,where were we8 ,who are these people8 ,right in the heart of the ,midland ,mountains1 among our native-born ,american ,highlanders1 people who have had as great a part in forming ,american history as any like number of men in our country to-day1 people who gave to this nation ,abraham ,lincoln1 who also produced ,jesse ,james--they are capable of either--who for a hundred and fifty years have been sitting in the shade of ignorance1 poverty and superstition1 but are now coming into the light of the school and the church as provided for them by the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,and now for a moment we will run down into the rice swamps of ,georgia4 ,come into the house of old ,aunt ,peggy4 ,a bed and two boxes form all the furniture of the room4 ,the house is a borrowed one4 ,aunt ,peggy is having a new one built4 ,it will cost five dollars1 and when we ask her how she is going to pay for it she tells us she has a quarter saved toward it1 and she has promised the man who is building it her blankets1 her only bedding beside an old comforter4 ,but the weather is growing warm1 she says1 and mebbe before it done turn cold ,i'll be in the hebbenly mansions4 ,one of the saddest relics of the old slavery days is these childless1 friendless1 companionless old people1 childless because slavery separated them from their children2 husbands and wives were parted1 and all family life rendered impossible4 ,two old people in the region of ,mc,intosh1 ,ga41 have recently died1 each alone in a little cabin1 and the tragedy was not discovered until the buzzards were seen circling around the place4 ,aunt ,peggy's sole comfort and dependence is a little boy eleven or twelve years old1 whom she picked up by the roadside where he1 a tiny baby1 had been left by a heartless mother4 ,although then at least eighty years old1 she strapped him on her back as she went to her tasses 7tasks7 in the field4 ,she named him ,calvary ,baker1 and now he has become her dependence and support1 although the light in her shadowed cabin comes from the ministrations of the teachers in ,dorchester ,academy2 and as she put her old1 gaunt1 claw-like black fingers on the face of the delicate1 refined academy teacher1 ,aunt ,peggy said3 ,oh1 you're my ,jesus mudder2 and then1 turning to me1 she said1 while a smile lit up the old black face1 ,oh1 missus1 ,i bress de ,lord for the ,jesus school1 for if it had not been for these ,jesus mudders1 ,i reckon hunger would have carried me off4 ,it is a wonderful work at ,mc,intosh1 as is true of all our schools4 ,there are great lessons to be learned there4 ,the student of the negro problem would do well to visit this section of the country with its historic interest1 to note the influence of the old ,midway ,church1 whose members were obliged to allow their slaves to attend church1 so that at one time the black membership of this church was double the white2 and to learn from a careful statistician that there is a less per cent4 of crime and immorality1 and a greater per cent4 of full-blooded negroes here1 under the influence of this old religious regim1 than can be found in any like number of our colored population throughout the ,black ,belt1 save where the ,christian school has changed the life during this last generation4 ,we are solving the negro problem in the only way possible1 in the opinion of all statesmen1 all publicists and all philanthropists1 by the farm and the shop1 and the school and the church1 and over them all the ,stars and ,stripes4 ,but we are doing more than this2 we are setting the solitary in families2 the wilderness and the solitary places are being made glad1 and the desert is rejoicing and blossoming as the rose4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,commencement ,,at ,,fisk ,,university1 ,,tenn4 ,fisk graduated classes of usual size4 ,it deeply lamented the absence of ,president ,cravath1 who was ill in the ,east1 and the late death of ,prof4 ,spence4 ,the ,dean1 ,j4 ,g4 ,merrill1 was deputed to preside at the varied functions of commencement week4 ,the weather was unusually temperate1 audiences very large4 ,the largest college preparatory class in the history of the university was graduated4 ,it catalogued thirty-nine4 ,ten ,states were represented on its list1 ,nashville1 after hearing the four ,commencement orations1 said that each one of them was superior in thought and delivery to the one that carried off the prize at ,princeton less than ten days before4 ,these young men and their classmates are to make their careers--three as physicians1 two as pharmacists1 two as teachers1 one as a business man1 the other as a lawyer4 ,the young woman graduate received two diplomas1 the second being in music1 her industry and ability being evidenced in the fact that her long hours with the piano did not prevent her receiving high honors in the ,talladega ,college1 a prominent white citizen said in comment on a speech he had just heard3 ,there is a good deal of foolish talk about how much the ,spanish-,american war has done in bringing the ,north and ,south together2 but the fact is1 that schools like this1 in which the ,negro is taught to be law-abiding and to live a moral life1 administered as this one is with such good sense and wisdom1 are doing far more than any sentimental influences of the war to bring races and sections to mutual good understanding4 ,on ,sunday1 at the big ,chautauqua building1 during the baccalaureate sermon1 two white citizens were standing at the door watching the quiet1 orderly audience of perhaps fifteen hundred colored people4 ,one of them has not been distinguished for earnestness of desire to see the ,negro educated4 ,said the other1 ,it looks like the niggers are coming up in spite of h--1 to which the response1 though possibly reluctant1 was clearly affirmative4 ,those who have been toiling all the year long1 unable to appreciate the work in its perspective1 discouraged sometimes because results hoped for do not immediately appear1 are cheered by such testimony to the efficiency and value of the work1 even if it is not always given in elegant and reverent form4 ,and there was other testimony of the same kind from all sorts and conditions of visitors4 ,expressions of pleasure and approval came constantly from alumni1 from teachers in other schools1 from citizens both white and black4 ,not as large a graduating class was sent out as usual1 there being only nine in all--three young men from the college department1 and six from the normal school1 all young women but one4 ,the parents of none of these students have graduated from ,talladega4 ,all of them were slaves1 though most were so young at the time of emancipation as not to remember much of slavery days4 ,the father of one of the college men1 however1 was1 it is said1 made by his master to run regularly before the bloodhounds to keep them in training4 ,sometimes it was hard running1 and sometimes he had to take refuge in a tree to escape harm when the dogs had caught up with him4 ,this young man1 who carried off the ,a4,b4 degree1 is planning to go to ,yale for further study1 and after a year or two to enter a ,northern law-school4 ,another of the same department is in some ways an accomplished fellow4 ,he has read widely and remembers what he has read2 he plays the violin2 he is an excellent pianist1 and he is a member of the college male quartet1 which is to spend the summer in the ,north1 endeavoring to raise money for new buildings greatly needed at ,talladega4 ,after this summer campaign he also hopes to begin the study of law at ,columbia or ,harvard4 ,the third young man of the college class expects to take for a year a principalship in the public schools of a neighboring city1 and then enter upon the study of medicine4 ,the young man who finished the normal course1 being a good carpenter1 has been for three years head of the college repair shop4 ,for this summer he will return to a country school where he has taught for five consecutive summers1 and in the fall hopes to enter a trade-school to perfect himself in carpentry and to learn what he can of architecture and building1 purposing to devote himself to that line of work4 ,it is a matter of congratulation to the school that so many students1 after finishing some course here1 are ambitious to pursue their studies further in the best institutions of the country4 ,the young women who were graduated from the normal course are all to enter upon the work for which they have been trained1 one or two already having positions in view in city schools1 while the others will take up work in the country districts4 ,it is not a large class1 as has been said1 but it is a good1 earnest1 ambitious class1 in which there is large promise of solid usefulness4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,commencement ,,at ,,straight ,,university1 ,,la4 ,the exercises of commencement week began on the morning of ,sunday1 ,may #bjth1 with an interesting address to the ,christian associations by ,rev4 ,a4 ,s4 ,jackson1 ,d4,d41 of ,dallas1 ,texas4 ,on the evening of the same day ,president ,oscar ,atwood delivered the ,baccalaureate ,address4 ,the close attention which this address commanded showed how well chosen was its theme and interesting the presentation of its ideas4 ,on ,monday the ,industrial and ,grade work was exhibited4 ,specimens of practical work in wood done by the young men and boys in the shop1 articles both useful and beautiful from the sewing-room1 together with fine drawings and written exercises done by members of the different grades1 made up this exhibit4 ,the value of this branch of the university's work cannot be overestimated4 ,the training given is of the most practical kind4 ,young men have been enabled1 through the industrial education received at the university1 to work at the carpenter's trade during their summer vacation1 and thus earn the means necessary to take them through the following year of study4 ,at the present time one enterprising young graduate1 as a result of this very training1 is putting up with his own hands the building which is to shelter the school he is founding in ,southern ,louisiana4 ,in the sewing-room the young women and girls1 besides acquiring a knowledge of mending and darning1 learn to cut1 fit and make all kinds of garments4 ,fancy work is taught them after they have learned the more useful kinds of sewing4 ,monday afternoon the ,rev4 ,chas4 ,r4 ,dinkins addressed the literary societies of the university1 and on ,monday evening one of the most interesting programs of the whole commencement season was presented--namely1 the class-day program4 ,it was in these exercises that the love of the graduating classes for their ,alma ,mater1 and their appreciation of her faithful and efficient instruction found fullest expression4 ,we have known of schools where class-day was made an occasion for ridiculing the ,faculty1 students and instruction of the institution4 ,not so at ,straight2 class-day there is one of the occasions when the delightful relations that have existed between teachers and students1 and among the student body1 are revealed4 ,illustration3 ,,college ,,department ,,graduating ,,class ,,with ,,president1 ,,straight ,,university4 ,a short address by the ,president is followed by the class oration1 well composed and ably delivered4 ,then we listen to an entertaining paper which gives us the history of the class4 ,we review with the young historian its hardships and its triumphs1 and conclude that1 like all other classes whose history we have heard1 it has had a remarkable career4 ,the prophecy is a spicy bit of humor1 and reflects much credit upon its writer1 a dainty little miss1 as bright and interesting a prophet as we shall meet in many a long day4 ,a young man now steps forward upon the platform1 of whose purpose in so doing we are not quite sure4 ,the president of the class soon clears up our doubts1 however1 by requesting ,president ,atwood to come forward4 ,it is evident that this is a surprise to the head of the university4 ,the young man makes a short speech of presentation and hands to the president a gift from the graduating classes4 ,the singing of the class ode closes this part of the evening's exercises1 and the college class now presents an excellent program consisting of an oration by the president1 a history and a well-written poem4 ,one cannot help remarking upon the dignity and good taste which characterized the exercises of ,class-,day4 ,we doubt whether any class in a ,northern school could have made a better showing4 ,illustration3 ,,college ,,preparatory ,,and ,,normal ,,graduating ,,class1 ,,straight ,,university4 ,on ,tuesday afternoon the graduating exercises of the grammar department were held4 ,on ,wednesday evening1 when the graduating classes received their diplomas1 the other students received certificates of the work they had done4 ,the alumni of ,straight held their annual business meeting on ,tuesday evening4 ,the commencement exercises on ,wednesday evening formed a fitting climax for a week so full of interest and inspiration4 ,these exercises are held at ,central ,church because it can accommodate a much larger audience than the university chapel1 and in the evening1 because this hour permits many to be present who1 on account of their work1 could not attend commencement during the day4 ,long before the hour appointed for beginning the exercises1 all the seats were filled and all the standing room in the church utilized1 and the air was alive with whispers1 low tones and the flutter of fans as the audience waited1 with the best patience it could muster1 for the opening numbers of the program4 ,when ,president ,atwood rose and announced the first number1 all sounds ceased1 and the great audience gave close attention to that and all the twenty-one succeeding numbers on the program4 ,the program was one of which the university may be justly proud4 ,the orations of the graduates from the college course on ,the ,mission of the ,scholar1 ,aims and ,ideals1 and ,does the ,constitution ,follow the ,flag8 would have been considered exceptional in any of our ,northern colleges1 for their thought1 expression and delivery4 ,the three graduates from the theological department did credit to their teacher1 ,rev4 ,g4 ,w4 ,henderson1 ,d4,d41 in their contribution to the program1 and the sixteen students who were graduated from the normal and college preparatory courses likewise acquitted themselves with credit4 ,the music of the program was furnished by the students1 and consisted of piano solos and duets and choruses4 ,the performers deserve much commendation4 ,the presentation of diplomas formed an impressive close to the evening's program4 ,to have seen these students is to believe in the work which the ,american ,missionary ,association is doing in the ,south1 and to become a promoter of that work2 it is to have faith in the ability of the negro to become a useful citizen2 it is to catch a glimpse of the true solution of the negro problem1 and to see that the satisfactory solution of that great question is being worked out1 not by our legislators1 but by devoted ,christian men and women1 like ,president ,atwood and his corps of teachers1 who are giving the best years of their lives to the service of the ,master in the ,southland4 ,the graduating class is the largest in the history of the university1 thirteen young men and twelve young women4 ,ten of these reside in ,new ,orleans1 and twelve are from different parts of ,louisiana1 ,north ,carolina and ,texas4 ,seven completed the college preparatory course1 nine the normal1 three the course in arts and three the theological4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,commencement ,,at ,,tougaloo ,,university1 ,,miss4 ,commencement at ,tougaloo ,university this year was characterized by an unusual quietness and the absence of the great crowds which usually attend4 ,for many weeks smallpox had been prevalent in the regions about1 so much so1 that it was necessary to practically quarantine the school against incomers4 ,since ,february1 nearly all pupils had been refused in the boarding department1 and from the middle of ,march the day pupils had been excluded almost wholly4 ,it is worthy of note1 however1 that notwithstanding this1 the enrollment of the year surpassed1 by one hundred and more1 that of the year previous4 ,it did not seem wise to issue any general invitation to the ,commencement ,exercises1 and so the public stayed away4 ,a few invited guests came from ,jackson1 among them ,governor ,longino1 ,secretary of ,state ,power1 ex-,congressman ,hooker1 and some of the pastors of the city4 ,these gentlemen made brief addresses1 heartily commending the school's work and that for which it stands4 ,the annual address on ,wealth1 by ,dr4 ,cornelius ,h4 ,patton1 of ,st4 ,louis1 made a very deep impression4 ,four students were graduated from the academy and normal course4 ,two of them1 and possibly more1 will take college work4 ,next year ,tougaloo will1 for the first time1 have a full college course4 ,excellent work has been done in that department during the past year4 ,it is interesting to note that one of the graduates represents the second generation at ,tougaloo1 her mother having been a student in the early days of the school4 ,there are many such second generation students in the lower grades1 and they distinctly show the effects of the influences to which their parents were subjected4 ,all the graduates were country-bred4 ,those visitors to the school who had been familiar with it in the past years were specially interested in the outward changes visible4 ,the new ,beard ,hall1 commodious and pleasant1 well furnished and convenient1 and the new ,refectory1 with its dining-room capable of seating three hundred students2 the ,emergency ,building1 now transformed into a spacious building for the manual training in wood and industrial drawing2 the new building for iron and steel forging and masonry2 the old shop metamorphosed into a most satisfactory laundry1 all were commented on as great additions to the material side of ,tougaloo's life4 ,in passing from building to building1 attention was paid to the industrial features of the work4 ,the exhibits of iron and steel tools made by the students1 among them a machine for cutting iron1 of great strength and excellent workmanship2 of chairs1 desks1 tables1 tabourets1 etc42 of needlework from the beginning steps to completed garments2 of cookery and of millinery1 were deemed very satisfactory4 ,much of the work cannot be surpassed anywhere4 ,leading ,mississippians are proud of ,tougaloo and its work1 and esteem it the best school of its class4 ,mention was more than once made of the fact that the new president of ,alcorn ,college1 the state institution for colored young men1 which is now doing better work than for some years1 and his accomplished wife1 are graduates of ,tougaloo4 ,the teacher of iron and steel work there had his training in the ,tougaloo shops4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,commencement ,,at ,,grandview ,,institute1 ,,tenn4 ,the exercises of the ,fifteenth ,annual ,commencement of the ,grandview ,normal ,institute opened with the baccalaureate sermon by the principal1 ,sunday1 ,april #bith1 in the prevailed throughout the exercises was in striking contrast to former days when pistols and moonshine whiskey were most fearfully in evidence4 ,of the graduates1 one of the young women will teach school the coming year1 the young man will seek work somewhere for a year and hopes then to enter the ,state ,university at ,knoxville and so fit himself for some useful calling in life4 ,these graduates are earnest young ,christians who will go out from their alma mater to reflect credit on the ,school and to do honor to those who have generously given of their means that the children of the people stranded on these mountains may see a great light4 ,the year just closed was the most prosperous one in the history of ,grandview school4 ,the enrollment was the largest the school had ever known and was considerably above two hundred4 ,next year1 if the juniors all return1 as is expected1 the graduating class will number about twenty4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,commencement ,,at ,,pleasant ,,hill denominational preferences there has been unity of feeling and co-operation in ,christian work4 ,we feel from expression given that these young people will use their education for the betterment of tepee4 ,their houses to-day are of logs plastered with mud4 ,sometimes they consist of one room1 but frequently have two or three rooms4 ,a three-roomed cottage usually consists of a central room with one outside door1 and a room at each end connecting with the central room1 but having no outside door4 ,the roof is made of rafters1 upon which poles are laid crosswise1 and the whole covered several inches with earth4 ,the floor is sometimes of lumber1 but more generally of bare earth1 which in very wet weather is apt to be turned into mud by the rain that drips through the ground-covered roof4 ,cleveland1 and had a profound respect for him as a man1 as well as one of the ablest preachers of our time4 ,when ,i came to ,brooklyn several years ago ,i was led to unite with his church4 ,i can therefore speak from a personal knowledge of twenty-five years4 ,in the death of ,dr4 ,behrends1 who had served both as vice-president and member of the ,executive ,committee of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 the ,society1 as well as the denomination of which he was one of the most conspicuous members1 has suffered a great loss4 ,central ,church1 ,brooklyn1 where he ministered with distinguished success for seventeen years and where he was beloved by all1 will feel the loss of this great and good man most keenly1 but all the churches of his home city1 where his voice was often heard and where his influence was so great1 will mourn the departure of one of the greatest preachers of this generation4 ,born in ,holland1 in the home of an humble ,lutheran preacher1 he came to this country with his parents when five years of age4 ,while teaching school in his seventeenth year1 near ,portsmouth1 ,ohio1 he was converted by the preaching of an obscure ,methodist minister and at once decided to fit himself for the work of the ministry4 ,largely by his own efforts he worked his way through ,dennison ,university1 ,ohio1 graduating in #ahfb in a class of three1 all of whom became prominent clergymen4 ,three years later he completed his theological studies at ,rochester ,theological ,seminary at the head of his class and was called at once to the pastorate of a large ,baptist ,church in ,yonkers1 ,n4 ,y41 where he remained eight years4 ,he was then called to the ,first ,baptist ,church of ,cleveland1 ,ohio1 where he won great distinction as a platform orator4 ,it was during this pastorate1 which lasted only three years1 that ,dr4 ,behrends1 after a great struggle1 decided to resign from this strong church1 where he was very popular1 and enter another denomination4 ,six happy years were then spent in the ,union ,church of ,providence1 where he was recognized as one of the foremost preachers in the ,state and nation4 ,dr4 ,behrends was a great scholar4 ,it is the belief of those who knew him well that he was able to fill any chair in any of our theological seminaries4 ,his services were in frequent demand for courses of lectures in our leading colleges and seminaries1 and at least two of these courses have been put into book form4 ,while his services were often sought for on great occasions1 such as the annual meetings of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 and ,a4 ,b4 ,c4 ,f4 ,m41 and similar gatherings1 his best work was done in his own pulpit4 ,his sermons were always prepared with the greatest care1 and1 except on rare occasions1 were delivered without a note and with wonderful beauty of diction and irresistible logic to the audiences of two thousand cultured people who hung on his words every ,sabbath and who regarded him1 not without good reason1 the greatest preacher in ,america4 ,the secret of the great success of ,dr4 ,behrends as a preacher was not to be found in his striking personality1 nor in his musical voice1 nor his profound scholarship1 but rather in his strong faith in the ,bible as the ,word of ,god1 as his only creed1 and that ,christ ,jesus1 the divine ,saviour1 is to win the whole world to ,himself4 ,from this belief he never wavered1 and to him the preaching of the gospel to men and seeing them come into the kingdom was the joy of his soul4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,richard ,,salter ,,storrs4 ,,charles ,a4 ,,hull1 ,,chairman4 ,i shall not attempt to repeat what has been so fully said by the religious and secular journals of the country in reference to the life and work of this great and good man1 but ,i desire to say a few words in regard to his connection with the anti-slavery movement1 and his interest in the work of the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,he was an original ,abolitionist1 and one of the most pronounced even in the early years of the agitation in his opposition to the wickedness of slavery1 and in later years the cause of the elevation of the freedman had no stronger nor better friend than he4 ,in an article written for the ,fiftieth ,anniversary ,number of ,the ,independent1 of which he was one of the original editors1 speaking of the conditions at the time ,the ,independent was founded1 and the attitude of some of the societies toward slavery1 ,dr4 ,storrs added3 ,and repeated efforts to induce the ,american ,board of ,foreign ,missions to take decisive anti-slavery ground1 while carrying on its work among ,cherokees and ,choctaws and other slaveholding peoples1 wholly failed of success--out of which failure came1 however1 the ,american ,missionary ,association1 since so justly honored1 and so widely and nobly useful4 ,by spoken and by written word he contributed much to the cause of ,christian education in the ,south and among the so-called dependent races4 ,about ten years ago he preached a special sermon upon ,our ,nation's ,work for the ,colored ,people1 in which1 speaking of the work of the ,association1 he said3 ,now ,i affirm absolutely that if there ever was a work of ,god on earth1 this is ,his work6 ,if there was ever anything to which the ,american ,christian people were called1 they are called to this4 ,if there was ever a great opportunity before the ,christian ,church1 here it is2 not to reach those people merely for their own immediate welfare2 not to save our own national life merely2 but to ,christianize that immense continent which lies opposite to us on the map1 which we have wronged so long with the slave-trade and with rum1 and to which now we can1 if we will1 send multitudes of messengers to testify of the glory of the grace of ,god4 ,i wish in closing to say a few words of ,dr4 ,storrs as a friend4 ,through many years he was not only my pastor but the most honored and beloved friend of my life4 ,his sense of humor was keen1 and his playfulness of manner constituted not the least of his charms to those who knew him intimately4 ,he never seemed to take a narrow view of any subject1 but was always lenient to and tolerant of those whose opinions differed from his own1 and yet strong and vigorous in his own convictions4 ,his loss to those closely associated with him in personal and ,san ,juan1 with three teachers from the states4 ,porto ,rico is divided for educational purposes into fifteen districts1 each with an ,american supervisor in charge of from thirty to forty schools4 ,these gentlemen must ride hundreds of miles1 largely on native ponies1 over poor roads and poorer mountain trails1 inspecting the schools and helping1 directing and often stirring up the native teachers4 ,the schools of the ,american ,missionary ,association have enrolled over three hundred children4 ,at ,lares the pupils have been very regular in attendance4 ,in ,santurce the attendance has been somewhat irregular4 ,in both schools the subjects pursued in ,american schools in the first five grades have been taken up1 with much attention to ,english4 ,the fact that very few children knew any ,english1 and that most of the teachers knew very little ,spanish1 made the work trying and slow at first4 ,the children proved themselves about as bright as ,american children1 quick in their perceptions1 with good memories1 weak in arithmetic1 not good thinkers or reasoners4 ,rarely do ,american teachers in the ,states receive so many little tokens of esteem and appreciation4 ,on the other hand1 the pupils are quick-tempered1 with little power of self control2 rather easily offended1 and lack in perseverance and stability4 ,they have little idea of attention and little power to interested in the school and willing to help the work2 the location is as healthful as any in the island1 and ,lares1 as a great coffee center1 promises to thrive and grow4 ,the education most needed in ,porto ,rico is practical1 industrial education4 ,santurce1 near the capital1 with a large1 poor population about the school1 dependent on their daily work for their support1 furnishes an excellent location for an industrial school4 ,the people and children do not know how to do anything4 ,the women are lavenderas1 or washwomen1 the children carry water1 the men do odd jobs1 and all are poorly housed1 poorly clothed1 poorly fed4 ,the children need manual training1 and gardening for the boys and sewing and cooking for the girls4 ,next year it is proposed to start these lines of work at ,francisco1 and the supplies were duly sent out in the bark ,alaska4 ,we have received intelligence from ,dr4 ,jackson1 at ,nome1 that the bark ,alaska was driven ashore and wrecked in the surf on ,wednesday1 ,june #fth4 ,in this letter ,dr4 ,jackson mentions that the wrecked ship contained a cabinet organ for the ,prince of ,wales mission1 which was ruined1 and that the ship also brought up a turkey from ,san ,francisco for ,mr4 ,lopp's ,thanksgiving dinner4 ,the next day ,dr4 ,jackson wrote us a brief note1 saying3 ,the bark ,alaska that went ashore on ,wednesday went to pieces in the
