the ,southern situation does not improve from year to year4 ,hundreds of thousands1 if not millions1 appreciate the trend of events and the necessity for the elevation of the depressed millions with whom they are intermingled4 ,the ,southern tragedies of murder and violence have awakened the same horror in their hearts as throughout the country at large4 ,there is a rising sentiment against lynching and for enforcing justice by the cold and passionless execution of law4 ,there is a strong desire to give the advantages of education to both the ignorant whites and the ignorant blacks4 ,there is a growing sympathy for the beneficent efforts to this end which are put forth from the ,north4 ,it is a great mistake to confuse the whole ,south with certain lower elements in its vast and varied populations4 ,it is also a mistake to imagine that sporadic instances of violence here and there are sufficient indices of the situation at large4 ,millions of the ,southern whites and blacks are dwelling together in amity and co operation for the advance of education and for moral progress4 ,illustrations are multiplying on every side of the desire on the part of the progressive ,south to fulfil the duties and meet the heavy responsibilities thrust upon it by the masses of population submerged in ignorance4 ,these immense masses are the burden not only of the ,south1 but of the ,american people at large4 ,ignorant labor is shiftless and wasteful labor4 ,the growth of varied and inter-related manufactures cannot rest upon a labor element of clumsiness and stupidity4 ,civil duties demand intelligence and morals4 ,the best patriotism of the ,south joins hands with that of the ,north in the elevation of the lowly and ignorant4 ,what has been done is only the initiation of the ten times more which must be done4 ,it is a significant fact that the last national census showed that the white illiteracy of the ,south was deeper than even the foreign illiteracy of the ,north2 while that of the ,southern black population was fearfully darker4 ,both public and private efforts are being made in countless communities of the ,south to begin the lifting of this great burden4 ,some of the ,states have already taken encouraging measures in this direction4 ,while there are reactions1 the general tide is that of progress4 ,it is easy to make too much of the violent reactionary outcries of a few ,southern newspapers4 ,it must be remembered that these shrill expostulations against progress are comparatively isolated and do not represent the general and deliberate sense of the intelligent ,south4 ,the day has come when intelligent leaders1 ,north and ,south1 can unite their efforts and push forward the work of popular upliftment throughout the ,south4 ,the lesson of the hour is not that of impatience and denunciation1 but of mutual sympathy and co-operation4 ,the hopeful progress of the past is a presage to the magnificent progress assured to the immediate future4 ,no more timely words have been spoken than those of a ,southern philanthropist when he said3 ,the ,negro must be educated4 ,it is absolutely necessary to both races that his of the representatives of the different benevolent societies of our ,protestant denominations who are entering upon mission work in ,porto ,rico a committee was appointed to draw up a paper containing a greeting to these people4 ,the paper was to be published in ,spanish and ,english4 ,the copies in ,english were to go especially to the missionaries to be scattered among ,english-speaking people4 ,the ,spanish translation was intended for the native ,porto ,ricans4 ,this paper was signed by representatives of different denominations as will be seen4 ,this broad1 comprehensive and loving message from the ,christians of ,america to the people of ,porto ,rico1 who are now a part of our own country1 must meet the approval of all those interested in the progress of the ,kingdom of ,god rather than some narrow denominational victory4 ,this greeting to the ,porto ,ricans is as follows3 ,we rejoice that your beautiful island has become part of the ,united ,states4 ,we take you by the hand as fellow-citizens of this ,republic4 ,we pray that you may share fully with us in all the blessings it has to give4 ,we have come among you to show our interest in and our sympathy with you1 and ,rico1 where there is scarcely any other missionary work4 ,and so this little band of eight devoted men and women have entered upon the pioneer work in opening up ,porto ,rico to an intelligent gospel4 ,they have gone out with the prayers and sympathy of thousands of those who have been greatly interested in the important work in this island territory4 ,the future promises large things in visited the island to examine the conditions and discover the best points for such work4 ,prof4 ,scott1 after reaching the island1 also made thorough investigation concerning the most important location4 ,he wrote after reaching ,porto ,rico3 ,the railroad from ,arecibo is impassable4 ,i hired a pony and a boy to guide me and started for the town4 ,the only way of traveling now1 except on military roads1 is by pony4 ,i had never ridden two miles on horseback in my life1 but it had to be done and ,i am still intact1 and have ridden twenty to twenty-five miles to-day without even getting stiff4 ,we reached ,arecibo1 having to ford or ferry streams five times4 ,there were no bridges left4 ,friday ,i rode to ,lares1 eighteen miles over the roughest trail imaginable4 ,much of it is as steep as a stairway1 with stones of all sizes replacing the steps4 ,but ,i managed to stick to my pony4 ,we reached ,lares at eight o'clock1 the eighteen miles taking nine hours1 with three hours at noon waiting for the rain to cease4 ,lares1 a town of #c1jjj population1 is situated in the western part of the island4 ,it was finally decided that this should be the place for the second school planted by the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,prof4 ,scott writes also3 ,lares is a very pleasant place1 built around the top of a hill1 the best residences at the top1 with best possible drainage and supplied with excellent spring water4 ,i had a letter to the ,alcalde 7,mayor7 and to the leading doctor of the town1 a very intelligent man1 who speaks ,english4 ,i examined several buildings and found one admirably adapted to our purpose4 ,it is central1 with a large room on the ground floor and five bedrooms1 a dining room and kitchen for the teachers4 ,everything is in excellent order4 ,the sanitary condition1 with some changes1 cannot be surpassed4 ,the house seems just built for our purpose1 and with a minimum expense can be enlarged to give two good-sized dormitories4 ,all the people whom ,i saw were very much interested in our work4 ,the city can do nothing4 ,they have paid no salaries for months4 ,the schools at ,lares and ,santurce represent the present educational work of the ,association in ,porto ,rico4 ,both schools are well under way and large numbers of eager pupils are in attendance4 ,prof4 ,scott wrote so urgently for reinforcements in order to meet the needs already pressing1 that an additional missionary teacher was sent in ,january4 ,miss ,johanna ,blinka was selected for this important mission1 as she was thoroughly acquainted with the ,spanish language and had had large experience in educational and missionary work4 ,this completes the force of eight teachers already engaged in the educational work under the ,american ,missionary ,association in the island of ,porto ,rico4 ,rev4 ,john ,edwards has begun work in the eastern part of the island4 ,there are few missionaries here and the opportunities for evangelistic work are pressing4 ,the following interesting facts were received under recent date from ,mr4 ,edwards3 ,he writes from ,fajardo1 eastern ,porto ,rico1 ,there are many circumstances attending the work here that are very trying and require the greatest of patience4 ,still1 on the whole1 there is great encouragement4 ,i have rented a building here at ,fajardo1 to occupy as the centre of missionary work in this region4 ,i ordered a dozen benches with backs1 to be used for public service4 ,a little table stands at the end of the room1 on which ,i place the ,bible and use as a pulpit4 ,it is my intention to develop fully the promising conditions both here at ,fajardo and also at ,humacao1 where ,i have found a warm welcome4 ,i understand the best time on ,sunday for public worship is in the evening4 ,the young men are most of them occupied during the day4 ,sunday is their busy market day until three or four o'clock in the afternoon1 when the market and stores close and all are free to go whither they like4 ,some of the young men told me that a number would attend our meetings in the night1 that could not come during the day4 ,of course1 this is a condition unfavorable to such ,christian work1 and yet ,i hope to be able to gather considerable audiences and reach this needy people with the living gospel of ,jesus ,christ4 ,i speak in ,spanish with comparative ease4 ,we held services ,sunday morning1 at which ,i preached4 ,we then sang several hymns which the people are rapidly learning4 ,we need hymn books to offer them for sale1 that they may be used in our meetings4 ,illustration3 ,a ,,street ,,in ,,santurce--,a ,,suburb ,,of ,,san ,,juan4 ,from this letter it will be seen that work is opening hopefully before our evangelist4 ,as the work develops it will demand a reinforcement of preachers capable of doing the same sort of earnest1 evangelistic work4 ,the demand in every department of this new island territory is pressing and imperative4 ,surely the churches of our ,congregational fellowship will see to it1 each one of them1 that the work is fully and cordially supported4 ,but a very natural question remains to be answered1 namely1 why have these missionaries gone to this island field8 ,the answer is easy and natural4 ,in the first place1 ,porto ,rico is the only territory that has come under the immediate direction and control of the ,united ,states government as a result of the war with ,spain4 ,it is emphatically a home missionary field4 ,the responsibility of our ,american churches is immediate and direct for the spread of the gospel among the inhabitants of this island1 who are even now our fellow citizens4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association follows the flag4 ,by the adjustment of work suggested by the churches years ago1 at which the ,association surrendered its foreign field and took the work among the ,indians as a legitimate department of its home work1 it has confined its missions to the territory of the ,united ,states4 ,patriotism reinforces the demands of ,christianity for the physical1 intellectual and religious development of the people in ,porto ,rico4 ,the time is immediate and the command imperative4 ,it is the command of our country as truly as of ,god4 ,churches1 expressing their views through resolutions of local conferences and associations1 urged upon the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 to occupy this island field4 ,this was another reason for going4 ,the appeal put before the churches in behalf of this important new work met with immediate and hopeful response4 ,ten thousand dollars are still demanded in order to put the work upon a proper and permanent foundation4 ,buildings should be erected for the schools1 and this immediately4 ,also homes for the teachers1 where model housekeeping can reinforce the instruction of the schoolroom and industrial class4 ,has not some friend1 who reads these messages from ,porto ,rico1 the ability and desire to send a check to our treasury at once1 to put one of these mission schools in permanent quarters and thus greatly reinforce the present work and secure its permanency8 ,little by little1 as the evangelistic movements progress1 chapels will be needed for the accommodation of audiences that gather for ,christian worship4 ,here again is a large increase upon the demands of ,christian people for this new work of the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,surely this little band of heroic ,christian missionaries and teachers who have gone out from their homes and from our shores1 responding at once to the call of the ,master to enter this important and large field1 will not be forgotten by ,christian men and women in our churches4 ,the work must not suffer4 ,it should be reinforced promptly and largely4 ,in ,god's providence1 mysterious and incomprehensible1 this island has become a part of our country4 ,the call now comes to occupy the field1 not with armies and military movements1 but with the peaceful influences of ,christianity4 ,the intellectual and moral quickening of the youth and children through the ,christian institutions planted among them1 and the preaching of the simple gospel of ,jesus ,christ to this destitute people1 create a responsibility which our ,congregational churches must meet courageously and generously4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,fisk ,,university4 ,j4 ,g4 could have sent forth this band of friendless youth on their mission4 ,they often were penniless as they went from town to town4 ,they arrived at ,oberlin and were permitted to sing before the ,national ,council1 then in session at that stronghold of the colored man4 ,the tide turned4 ,it rose with rapidity4 ,plymouth1 ,brooklyn1 and other churches were opened to them4 ,the entire ,north gave them welcome4 ,they crossed the ,atlantic2 that gracious friend of humanity ,queen ,victoria1 gave them audience4 ,her incomparable prime minister1 ,gladstone1 made them his guests at ,hawarden4 ,germany and ,france heard them4 ,at the end of seven years they returned to ,nashville and laid at the feet of the ,university the munificent sum of #aej1jjj1 a large part of which was devoted to the erection of ,jubilee ,hall and the remainder to the paying for the campus of thirty-five acres1 once a slave plantation1 now the most commanding location in the ,athens of the ,south1 as ,nashville1 for all1 manual training for those that are adapted to it and will use it in their after life1 the best of culture for those who are capable of receiving and employing it4 ,in a word1 capacity not color1 ,christianity not caste1 is to decide the question as to the kind of education a youth is to receive1 whether he dwell in the ,north or ,south1 whether he be an ,ethiopian or an ,anglo-,saxon4 ,exceeding few in comparison with the vast multitude of their race will be those who receive their diploma at ,fisk2 but they are to be the leaders of a people sorely needing leadership4 ,and ,fisk's labored with their own people until they were discouraged and the work well-nigh died4 ,afterwards several young men1 one after another1 came into the field1 but though they were individually earnest1 their work did not make much impression4 ,they procured tables1 chairs and reading matter and fitted up a room1 but nine out of ten of those to whom they were sent could neither read nor write1 and of course did not seem to be greatly drawn to current literature4 ,in #ahic1 however1 ,mr4 and ,mrs4 ,g4 ,w4 ,woodward took charge1 and did most excellent service1 remaining almost a year until they left question4 ,in #ahie ,rev4 ,r4 ,h4 ,harper1 coming to take charge1 found1 he says1 one cheap two-room cottage1 one pony1 an old wagon and harness and besides these a table and a few chairs4 ,he knew that unless more buildings could be procured1 the work would amount to nothing4 ,upon request1 the ,interior ,department set aside two acres of land near the government school for the use of the mission4 ,the ,church-,building ,society has at different times extended generous help1 as a result of which the mission finally secured a beautiful chapel1 with rooms and apartments above and below4 be kept within the narrow bounds of the schoolroom4 ,it spread to the camp and field4 ,the parents came to me to learn1 and ,i had many requests to go to them and tell them about ,jesus1 till in at least two places1 #ah and #bj miles distant from the ,agency1 the camp ,indians have asked to have a church organized and a house built4 ,on ,easter ,sunday1 #ahih1 the climax was reached1 so far as numbers were concerned1 when #fg young people1 from ten to twenty-six years of age1 from both tribes1 gave themselves to ,christ1 and presented themselves for baptism4 ,the interest is still general though somewhat abated in intensity4 ,several times in the last few months have smaller numbers united with the ,church4 ,illustration3 ,,in ,,camp4 ,a few weeks ago ,i returned to my work from the ,east1 where dear friends showed me every courtesy and sympathy possible1 and while at the ,mohonk ,conference of ,indian ,workers ,i met many whose hearts and purses were open to pray for and help the helpless and abused red man4 ,during my visit ,east ,i found a general interest and sympathy from churches and individuals1 and money was put into my hands sufficient to add two or three warm rooms to our parsonage1 which we have vacated and turned over to the sick and distressed ,indians for a hospital4 ,with the rooms we have just added--work is now going on--this parsonage hospital has one kitchen1 one general work-room1 two rooms sufficient for four beds1 a room for reading and study1 a laundry or general purpose room1 and a bathroom2 this latter1 however1 we cannot finish at present for lack of money to provide water facilities4 ,chairs and tables will be put in1 and bead and embroidery work1 done in both silk and worsted1 will be persistently encouraged1 so far as funds will allow4 ,there is attached to the mission a free medical dispensary1 to which a great many come4 ,it is1 however1 only intended to be supplemental to the general medical work under the direction of the stationed ,government physician1 who is not only a thoroughly trained and competent physician1 but a careful and painstaking one as well4 ,a great many questions mingled with doubt are frequently asked us1 by those who look upon the ,indian more as a curiosity than a human being1 or as a painted entity watching for an opportunity to wreak vengeance on the white man4 ,do you really to ,tennessee to take his college training at ,fisk ,university4 ,but it is of the ,southern field1 as ,i have seen it during the last six weeks1 that ,i wish to speak4 ,our ,chandler ,institute at ,lexington1 ,ky41 is filled with earnest students1 under the direction of ,miss ,fanny ,j4 ,webster and her associates4 ,every year well-trained young people go out from this school to their life-work4 ,during a gospel meeting recently held with the ,lexington ,church1 more than fifty of the pupils of ,chandler ,school avowed their faith in ,christ4 ,the church is built upon the site of an old slave-pen1 the key of which is preserved as a relic of those dark days4 ,the neat chapel now stands as a symbol of light and truth to the people4 ,the pastor1 ,rev4 ,w4 ,l4 ,johnson1 is a graduate of ,fisk1 and his wife is from ,le ,moyne ,institute4 ,she has taught in our service at ,memphis and ,mobile4 ,some of the most representative and influential citizens are members of our ,lexington ,church1 among whom are the two leading physicians1 the supervising principal and several teachers of the public schools4 ,a directory of the negro in business reports3 four physicians1 two dentists1 two lawyers1 an editor1 two undertaking establishments1 several groceries1 a drug store and other business enterprises1 besides mechanics1 farmers1 etc4 ,they support a home for orphans1 and maintain a number of benevolent organizations4 ,the colored people of ,lexington hold an ,annual ,fair at the ,state ,fair ,grounds1 which is a most attractive feature of ,kentucky life4 ,during the week of the ,fair the city is crowded1 and the daily attendance numbers thousands of the best people of both races4 ,the ,negro ,fair ,association is entirely under the management of colored men1 and has a paid-up capital of several thousand dollars4 ,the thrift and intelligence of the colored people can be seen by the large number of neat and well-appointed homes owned by them4 ,plymouth ,church1 at ,louisville1 is making hopeful progress under the ministry of ,rev4 ,e4 ,g4 ,harris4 ,among the members of this church are three teachers of the ,colored ,high ,school1 who are ,fisk graduates4 ,the president of the ,christian ,endeavor is ,dr4 ,whipple1 a physician of note1 and the superintendent of the ,sunday-school is ,professor ,perry1 the principal of a large public school of over a thousand pupils4 ,some of the most active workers are mechanics and people in humble life4 ,rev4 ,gilbert ,walton was present at one of our meetings and gave an interesting address on the work among the people of the mountains of ,kentucky and ,tennessee4 ,the colored people of ,louisville are also making encouraging1 material progress4 ,dr4 ,whedbee and other colored physicians have opened a medical school under the auspices of the ,colored ,state ,college4 ,they have also opened a free sanitarium in the central part of the city1 which is supported by the colored people4 ,our school at ,florence1 ,ala41 is crowded with boys and girls who are eager for an education4 ,many of them walk in from the country a distance of several miles4 ,among the pupils are two men who are preachers4 ,miss ,m4 ,l4 ,corpier and ,miss ,nicholson are in charge of this school4 ,they are both graduates of ,fisk ,university4 ,a revival of great spiritual power was held in connection with the ,florence church and school4 ,four men of mature life and heads of families were among the converts4 ,the church is growing in numbers and influence under the ministry of ,rev4 ,r4 ,j4 ,mc,cann1 a graduate of ,talladega ,college4 ,we visited eight families of the church who lived in the country4 ,in one of these country homes we held a service in which four persons were converted1 whom we baptized4 ,two small children were also baptized4 ,there was joy in that home4 ,one of the most unique institutions of ,birmingham1 ,ala41 is the ,penny ,savings ,bank1 under the management of colored men4 ,this bank has stood the storms of several panics and has been in successful operation for more than a decade2 it has the confidence of the entire community4 ,mr4 ,b4 ,h4 ,hudson1 the cashier1 a graduate of ,talladega ,college1 is a leading member of our ,congregational ,church4 ,rev4 ,abraham ,simmons is pastor of the church4 ,at our closing service at ,birmingham1 the three principals of the public schools1 and a number of teachers who graduated at ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 schools1 a graduate of ,fisk and now a theological student of ,oberlin1 several business men1 and men and women of humble life1 all testified to their loyalty to ,christ and joy in ,his service4 ,a successful revival service was also held at ,knoxville1 ,tenn41 in which more than thirty conversions were reported4 ,i was greatly cheered on ,thanksgiving ,day by the receipt of twenty-five messages from these young disciples of their love to ,christ and desire to serve ,him4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,news ,,from ,,arctic ,,alaska4 ,w4 ,it brings the latest message from this distant mission-field1 and this message is one of great encouragement4 ,mr4 ,lopp writes3 ,now that the ,american ,missionary ,association is out of debt1 we hope you will be able to send us a missionary with a missionary wife to be with us4 ,it is hardly necessary for us to cite reasons for this4 ,he should be a minister1 if possible4 ,it would not be right to subject children of school age to the influences of the life here4 ,you wrote us up last year as having 'no time for gold hunting1 and yet gold has been discovered within a few miles of the ,cape4' ,this brings upon us new anxiety and greater work4 ,should these claims turn out well1 the ,american ,missionary ,association will not be forgotten4 ,the ,bear has made a wonderful cruise this season4 ,i doubt if she ever made a longer one4 ,she arrived here too late to look after some whaling vessels1 but considerable testimony has been secured1 and if the present captain commands the ,bear again next year ,i think certain whalers will be seized if they do not change their ways4 ,the present captain has made a very conscientious commander1 and has surely exerted himself to perform his duty vigorously and honestly4 ,he has administered the law toward the ,eskimo as well as white men1 and arrested those who were guilty of crime4 ,he was very kind to the natives1 giving them help in coming from ,cape ,prince of ,wales to this point and also across the straits to ,siberia4 ,when the sea was too rough for their skin boats he would have them hoisted up on deck4 ,the ,united ,states surgeon has also been exceedingly kind to us4 ,we now have #dcg reindeer1 and have sent an order signed by ,dr4 ,jackson to the station on ,norton ,sound for the #bgg which are yet due us4 ,these will be driven up some time this winter4 ,after they come we will make an estimate of the number belonging to the ,eskimo boys and mark them4 ,i have taken one new herder as an apprentice1 and hope to take another or two next year4 ,we sold reindeer at thirty dollars per head to the ,bureau of ,education1 which furnished money for training other apprentices4 ,our old apprentices can now pay their own way1 and the sale of the reindeer in the future will go toward helping new apprentices till they can help themselves4 ,the ,woman's ,home ,missionary ,association of ,boston have contributed toward the support of native workers4 ,we received word about it and rejoiced in their generous gifts4 ,i will use it in helping support ,sokweena at our little mission at ,mitle-tok4 ,as ,i wrote last year1 we were enabled to start this mission through a small contribution of about twenty-five dollars from the generous ,endeavorers of ,westboro1 ,mass4 ,then some other friends sent in a little help that went toward the support of ,sokweena and his wife4 ,it is not enough1 but we will try to make it do for the present4 ,we were unable to visit ,sokweena but three times last winter4 ,if we could only visit him oftener and help him more he would be able to accomplish more4 ,but some of the children at his mission learn to spell and write a little and to sing4 ,we had some very good meetings4 ,lucy and ,i went up and stayed three days4 ,we took a lantern4 ,many of the old folks had professed ,christ and seemed to be earnest and sincere in their prayers4 ,the position for have just erected a building twelve by forty feet1 which we have decided to call ',thornton ,house4' ,it is to be used as a workshop1 club-room and other purposes for the natives4 ,the need of such a building had occurred to ,mr4 ,thornton and myself in #ahij4 ,last year ,mrs4 ,thornton succeeded in gathering one hundred and twenty-seven dollars1 which was sufficient to purchase the lumber and pay at ,sisseton1 ,south ,dakota4 ,fourteen months later the first ,indian ,christian ,endeavor ,society was started at ,santee4 ,illustration3 ,,chapel1 ,,santee ,,normal ,,school1 ,,neb4 ,meeting-place of our ,indian ,endeavor ,society4 ,illustration3 ,,mamie ,,daka ,,elder1 ,pres't ,santee ,endeavor ,soc4 ,this year at ,santee the young people's society includes twenty-one of the ,indian pupils with three or four of the teachers1 and there are two junior societies1 one of girls and one of boys4 ,there is a mothers' society1 which was started three or four years ago among the women of the mission church4 ,all these societies have an important place in the ,indian mission work4 ,illustration3 ,,etta ,r4 ,,stamford1 ,sec'y ,santee ,endeavor ,soc4 ,in the young people's society many of the members remain the same from year to year2 but during the ten years one hundred and thirty-two young people have joined4 ,they have come from eighteen different agencies1 and in several cases from more than one village in the agency4 ,out of this one-hundred and thirty-two1 twenty-three have been engaged1 since leaving school1 in direct missionary work1 most of them as preachers and teachers of day-schools1 but a few as the wives of such teachers1 or as teachers in mission boarding-schools or missionary helpers4 ,some of these have done excellent work1 and those of whom this is true are nearly always those who were most faithful and active during their school course in the ,christian ,endeavor ,society4 ,three or four of the most promising have died before they had any opportunity to other societies have been started among the ,indians1 where the leaders were chiefly from those who had been members at ,santee4 ,but the societies not connected with mission schools have been
