,,the ,,story ,,of ,,the ,,prophet ,,jonas4 ,william ,tyndale #aeca translation4 ,spelling has been modernized1 but nothing else altered4 ,note3 ,the first ,chapter4 ,the word of the ,lord came unto the prophet ,jonas the son of ,amithai saying3 rise and get thee to ,ninevehh that great city and preach unto them1 how that their wickedness is come up before me4 ,and ,jonas made him ready to flee to ,tharsis from the presence of the ,lord1 and gat him down to ,joppa1 and found there a ship ready to go to ,tharsis1 and paid his fare1 and went aboard1 to go with them to ,tharsis from the presence of the ,lord4 ,but the ,lord hurled a great wind in to the sea1 so that there was a mighty tempest in the sea3 insomuch that the ship was like to go in pieces4 ,and the mariners were afraid and cried every man unto his god1 and cast out the goods that were in the ship in to the sea1 to lighten it of them4 ,but ,jonas gat him under the hatches and laid him down and slumbered4 ,and the master of the ship came to him and said unto him1 why slumberest thou8 up6 and call unto thy god1 that ,god may think on us1 that we perish not4 ,and they said one to another1 come and let us cast lots1 to know for whose cause we are thus troubled4 ,and they cast lots4 ,and the lot fell upon ,jonas4 ,then they said unto him1 tell us for whose cause we are thus troubled3 what is thine occupation1 whence comest thou1 how is thy country called1 and of what nation art thou8 ,and he answered them1 ,i am an ,hebrew3 and the ,lord ,god of heaven which made both sea and dry land1 ,i fear4 ,then were the men exceedingly afraid and said unto him1 why didst thou so8 ,for they knew that he was fled from the presence of the ,lord1 because he had told them4 ,then they unto him1 what shall we do unto thee1 that the sea may cease from troubling us8 ,for the sea wrought and was troublous4 ,and he answered them1 take me and cast me in to the sea1 and so shall it let you be in rest3 for ,i wot1 it is for my sake1 that this great tempest is come upon you4 ,nevertheless the men assayed with rowing to bring the ship to land3 but it would not be1 because the sea so wrought and was so troublous against them4 ,wherefore they cried unto the ,lord and said3 ,o ,lord let us not perish for this mans death1 neither lay innocent blood unto our charge3 for thou ,lord even as thy pleasure was1 so thou hast done4 ,and then they took ,jonas1 and cast him into the sea1 and the sea left raging4 ,and the men feared the ,lord exceedingly3 and sacrificed sacrifice unto the ,lord3 and vowed vows4 ,the second ,chapter4 ,but the ,lord prepared a great fish1 to swallow up ,jonas4 ,and so was ,jonas in the bowels of the fish three days and three nights4 ,and ,jonas prayed unto the ,lord his ,god out of the bowels of the fish4 ,and he said3 in my tribulation ,i called unto the ,lord1 and he answered me3 out of the belly of hell ,i cried1 and thou heardest my voice4 ,for thou hadst cast me down deep in the midst of the sea and the flood compassed me about3 and all thy waves and rolls of water went over me3 and ,i thought that ,i had been cast away out of thy sight4 ,but ,i will yet again look toward thy holy temple4 ,the water compassed me even unto the very soul of me3 the deep lay about me3 and the weeds were wrapped about mine head4 ,and ,i went down unto the bottom of the hills1 and was barred in with earth on every side for ever4 ,and yet thou ,lord my ,god broughtest up my life again out of corruption4 ,when my soul fainted in me1 ,i thought on the ,lord3 and my prayer came in unto thee1 even into thy holy temple4 ,they that observe vain vanities1 have forsaken him that was merciful unto them4 ,but ,i will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving1 and will pay that that ,i have vowed1 that saving cometh of the ,lord4 ,and the ,lord spake unto the fish3 and it cast out ,jonas again upon the dry land4 ,the third ,chapter4 ,then came the word of the ,lord unto ,jonas again saying3 up1 and get thee to ,nineveh that great city1 and preach unto them the preaching which ,i bade thee4 ,and he arose and went to ,nineveh at the ,lord's commandment4 ,nineveh was a great city unto ,god1 containing three days journey4 ,and ,jonas went to and entered in to the city even a days journey1 and cried saying3 ,there shall not pass forty days but ,nineveh shall be overthrown4 ,and the people of ,nineveh believed ,god1 and proclaimed fasting1 and arrayed themselves in sackcloth1 as well the great as the small of them4 ,and the tidings came unto the king of ,nineveh1 which arose out of his seat1 and did his apparel off and put on sackcloth1 and sat him down in ashes4 ,and it was cried and commanded in ,nineveh by the authority of the king and of his lords saying3 see that neither man or beast1 ox or sheep taste ought at all1 and that they neither feed or drink water4 ,and they put on sackcloth both man and beast1 and cried unto ,god mightily1 and turned every man his wicked way1 and from doing wrong in which they were accustomed1 saying3 who can tell whether ,god will turn and repent1 and cease from his fierce wrath1 that we perish not8 ,and when ,god saw their works1 how they turned from their wicked ways1 he repented of the evil which he said he would do unto them1 and did it not4 ,the fourth ,chapter4 ,wherefore ,jonas was sore discontent and angry4 ,and he prayed unto the ,lord and said3 ,o ,lord1 was not this my saying when ,i was yet in my country8 ,and therefore ,i hasted rather to flee to ,tharsis3 for ,i knew well enough that thou wast a merciful god1 full of compassion1 long ere thou be angry and of great mercy and repentest when thou art come to take punishment4 ,now therefore take my life from me1 for ,i had lever die than live4 ,and the ,lord said unto ,jonas1 art thou so angry8 ,and ,jonas gat him out of the city and sat him down on the east side thereof1 and made him there a booth and sat thereunder in the shadow1 till he might see what should chance unto the city4 ,and the ,lord prepared as it were a wild vine which sprang up over ,jonas1 that he might have shadow over his head1 to deliver him out of his pain4 ,and ,jonas was exceeding glad of the wild vine4 ,and the ,lord ordained a worm against the spring of the morrow morning which smote the wild vine that it withered away4 ,and as soon as the sun was up1 ,god prepared a fervent east wind3 so that the sun beat over the head of ,jonas1 that he fainted again and wished unto his soul that he might die1 and said1 it is better for me to die than to live4 ,and ,god said unto ,jonas1 art thou so angry for thy wild vine8 ,and he said1 ,i am angry a good1 even on to the death4 ,and the ,lord said1 thou hast compassion on a wild vine1 whereon thou bestowedest no labour nor made it grow1 which sprang up in one night and perished in another3 and should not ,i have compassion on ,nineveh that great city1 wherein there is a multitude of people1 even above an hundred thousand that know not their right hand from the left1 besides much cattle8
