,,indulgences ,,october #ca1 #aeag ,out of love for the truth and the desire to bring it to light1 the following propositions will be discussed at ,wittenberg1 under the presidency of the ,reverend ,father ,martin ,luther1 ,master of ,arts and of ,sacred ,theology1 and ,lecturer in ,ordinary on the same at that place4 ,wherefore he requests that those who are unable to be present and debate orally with us1 may do so by letter4 ,in the ,name our ,lord ,jesus ,christ4 ,amen4 #a4 ,our ,lord and ,master ,jesus ,christ1 when ,he said ,poenitentiam agite1 willed that the whole life of believers should be repentance4 #b4 ,this word cannot be understood to mean sacramental penance1 i4e41 confession and satisfaction1 which is administered by the priests4 #c4 ,yet it means not inward repentance only2 nay1 there is no inward repentance which does not outwardly work divers mortifications of the flesh4 #d4 ,the penalty of sin1 therefore1 continues so long as hatred of self continues2 for this is the true inward repentance1 and continues until our entrance into the kingdom of heaven4 #e4 ,the pope does not intend to remit1 and cannot remit any penalties other than those which he has imposed either by his own authority or by that of the ,canons4 #f4 ,the pope cannot remit any guilt1 except by declaring that it has been remitted by ,god and by assenting to ,god's remission2 though1 to be sure1 he may grant remission in cases reserved to his judgment4 ,if his right to grant remission in such cases were despised1 the guilt would remain entirely unforgiven4 #g4 ,god remits guilt to no one whom ,he does not1 at the same time1 humble in all things and bring into subjection to ,his vicar1 the priest4 #h4 ,the penitential canons are imposed only on the living1 and1 according to them1 nothing should be imposed on the dying4 #i4 ,therefore the ,holy ,spirit in the pope is kind to us1 because in his decrees he always makes exception of the article of death and of necessity4 #aj4 ,ignorant and wicked are the doings of those priests who1 in the case of the dying1 reserve canonical penances for purgatory4 #aa4 ,this changing of the canonical penalty to the penalty of purgatory is quite evidently one of the tares that were sown while the bishops slept4 #ab4 ,in former times the canonical penalties were imposed not after1 but before absolution1 as tests of true contrition4 #ac4 ,the dying are freed by death from all penalties2 they are already dead to canonical rules1 and have a right to be released from them4 #ad4 ,the imperfect health of soul1 that is to say1 the imperfect love1 of the dying brings with it1 of necessity1 great fear2 and the smaller the love1 the greater is the fear4 #ae4 ,this fear and horror is sufficient of itself alone 7to say nothing of other things7 to constitute the penalty of purgatory1 since it is very near to the horror of despair4 #af4 ,hell1 purgatory1 and heaven seem to differ as do despair1 almost-despair1 and the assurance of safety4 #ag4 ,with souls in purgatory it seems necessary that horror should grow less and love increase4 #ah4 ,it seems unproved1 either by reason or ,scripture1 that they are outside the state of merit1 that is to say1 of increasing love4 #ai4 ,again1 it seems unproved that they1 or at least that all of them1 are certain or assured of their own blessedness1 though we may be quite certain of it4 #bj4 ,therefore by full remission of all penalties the pope means not actually of all1 but only of those imposed by himself4 #ba4 ,therefore those preachers of indulgences are in error1 who say that by the pope's indulgences a man is freed from every penalty1 and saved2 #bb4 ,whereas he remits to souls in purgatory no penalty which1 according to the canons1 they would have had to pay in this life4 #bc4 ,if it is at all possible to grant to any one the remission of all penalties whatsoever1 it is certain that this remission can be granted only to the most perfect1 that is1 to the very fewest4 #bd4 ,it must needs be1 therefore1 that the greater part of the people are deceived by that indiscriminate and highsounding promise of release from penalty4 #be4 ,the power which the pope has1 in a general way1 over purgatory1 is just like the power which any bishop or curate has1 in a special way1 within his own diocese or parish4 #bf4 ,the pope does well when he grants remission to souls in purgatory1 not by the power of the keys 7which he does not possess71 but by way of intercession4 #bg4 ,they preach man who say that so soon as the penny jingles into the money-box1 the soul flies out of purgatory4 #bh4 ,it is certain that when the penny jingles into the money-box1 gain and avarice can be increased1 but the result of the intercession of the ,church is in the power of ,god alone4 #bi4 ,who knows whether all the souls in purgatory wish to be bought out of it1 as in the legend of ,sts4 ,severinus and ,paschal4 #cj4 ,no one is sure that his own contrition is sincere2 much less that he has attained full remission4 #ca4 ,rare as is the man that is truly penitent1 so rare is also the man who truly buys indulgences1 i4e41 such men are most rare4 #cb4 ,they will be condemned eternally1 together with their teachers1 who believe themselves sure of their salvation because they have letters of pardon4 #cc4 ,men must be on their guard against those who say that the pope's pardons are that inestimable gift of ,god by which man is reconciled to ,him2 #cd4 ,for these graces of pardon concern only the penalties of sacramental satisfaction1 and these are appointed by man4 #ce4 ,they preach no ,christian doctrine who teach that contrition is not necessary in those who intend to buy souls out of purgatory or to buy confessionalia4 #cf4 ,every truly repentant ,christian has a right to full remission of penalty and guilt1 even without letters of pardon4 #cg4 ,every true ,christian1 whether living or dead1 has part in all the blessings of ,christ and the ,church2 and this is granted him by ,god1 even without letters of pardon4 #ch4 ,nevertheless1 the remission and participation in the blessings of the ,church which are granted by the pope are in no way to be despised1 for they are1 as ,i have said1 the declaration of divine remission4 #ci4 ,it is most difficult1 even for the very keenest theologians1 at one and the same time to commend to the people the abundance of pardons and the need of true contrition4 #dj4 ,true contrition seeks and loves penalties1 but liberal pardons only relax penalties and cause them to be hated1 or at least1 furnish an occasion for hating them4 #da4 ,apostolic pardons are to be preached with caution1 lest the people may falsely think them preferable to other good works of love4 #db4 ,christians are to be taught that the pope does not intend the buying of pardons to be compared in any way to works of mercy4 #dc4 ,christians are to be taught that he who gives to the poor or lends to the needy does a better work than buying pardons2 #dd4 ,because love grows by works of love1 and man becomes better2 but by pardons man does not grow better1 only more free from penalty4 #de4 ,christians are to be taught that he who sees a man in need1 and passes him by1 and gives his money for pardons1 purchases not the indulgences of the pope1 but the indignation of ,god4 #df4 ,christians are to be taught that unless they have more than they need1 they are bound to keep back what is necessary for their own families1 and by no means to squander it on pardons4 #dg4 ,christians are to be taught that the buying of pardons is a matter of free will1 and not of commandment4 #dh4 ,christians are to be taught that the pope1 in granting pardons1 needs1 and therefore desires1 their devout prayer for him more than the money they bring4 #di4 ,christians are to be taught that the pope's pardons are useful1 if they do not put their trust in them2 but altogether harmful1 if through them they lose their fear of ,god4 #ej4 ,christians are to be taught that if the pope knew the exactions of the pardon-preachers1 he would rather that ,st4 ,peter's church should go to ashes1 than that it should be built up with the skin1 flesh and bones of his sheep4 #ea4 ,christians are to be taught that it would be the pope's wish1 as it is his duty1 to give of his own money to very many of those from whom certain hawkers of pardons cajole money1 even though the church of ,st4 ,peter might have to be sold4 #eb4 ,the assurance of salvation by letters of pardon is vain1 even though the commissary1 nay1 even though the pope himself1 were to stake his soul upon it4 #ec4 ,they are enemies of ,christ and of the pope1 who bid the ,word of ,god be altogether silent in some ,churches1 in order that pardons may be preached in others4 #ed4 ,injury is done the ,word of ,god when1 in the same sermon1 an equal or a longer time is spent on pardons than on this ,word4 #ee4 ,it must be the intention of the pope that if pardons1 which are a very small thing1 are celebrated with one bell1 with single processions and ceremonies1 then the ,gospel1 which is the very greatest thing1 should be preached with a hundred bells1 a hundred processions1 a hundred ceremonies4 #ef4 ,the treasures of the ,church1 out of which the pope grants indulgences1 are not sufficiently named or known among the people of ,christ4 #eg4 ,that they are not temporal treasures is certainly evident1 for many of the vendors do not pour out such treasures so easily1 but only gather them4 #eh4 ,nor are they the merits of ,christ and the ,saints1 for even without the pope1 these always work grace for the inner man1 and the cross1 death1 and hell for the outward man4 #ei4 ,st4 ,lawrence said that the treasures of the ,church were the ,church's poor1 but he spoke according to the usage of the word in his own time4 #fj4 ,without rashness we say that the keys of the ,church1 given by ,christ's merit1 are that treasure2 #fa4 ,for it is clear that for the remission of penalties and of reserved cases1 the power of the pope is of itself sufficient4 #fb4 ,the true treasure of the ,church is the ,most ,holy ,gospel of the glory and the grace of ,god4 #fc4 ,but this treasure is naturally most odious1 for it makes the first to be last4 #fd4 ,on the other hand1 the treasure of indulgences is naturally most acceptable1 for it makes the last to be first4 #fe4 ,therefore the treasures of the ,gospel are nets with which they formerly were wont to fish for men of riches4 #ff4 ,the treasures of the indulgences are nets with which they now fish for the riches of men4 #fg4 ,the indulgences which the preachers cry as the greatest graces are known to be truly such1 in so far as they promote gain4 #fh4 ,yet they are in truth the very smallest graces compared with the grace of ,god and the piety of the ,cross4 #fi4 ,bishops and curates are bound to admit the commissaries of apostolic pardons1 with all reverence4 #gj4 ,but still more are they bound to strain all their eyes and attend with all their ears1 lest these men preach their own dreams instead of the commission of the pope4 #ga4 ,he who speaks against the truth of apostolic pardons1 let him be anathema and accursed6 #gb4 ,but he who guards against the lust and license of the pardon-preachers1 let him be blessed6 #gc4 ,the pope justly thunders against those who1 by any art1 contrive the injury of the traffic in pardons4 #gd4 ,but much more does he intend to thunder against those who use the pretext of pardons to contrive the injury of holy love and truth4 #ge4 ,to think the papal pardons so great that they could absolve a man even if he had committed an impossible sin and violated the ,mother of ,god--this is madness4 #gf4 ,we say1 on the contrary1 that the papal pardons are not able to remove the very least of venial sins1 so far as its guilt is concerned4 #gg4 ,it is said that even ,st4 ,peter1 if he were now ,pope1 could not bestow greater graces2 this is blasphemy against ,st4 ,peter and against the pope4 #gh4 ,we say1 on the contrary1 that even the present pope1 and any pope at all1 has greater graces at his disposal2 to wit1 the ,gospel1 powers1 gifts of healing1 etc41 as it is written in ,i4 ,corinthians xii4 #gi4 ,to say that the cross1 emblazoned with the papal arms1 which is set up by the preachers of indulgences1 is of equal worth with the ,cross of ,christ1 is blasphemy4 #hj4 ,the bishops1 curates and theologians who allow such talk to be spread among the people1 will have an account to render4 #ha4 ,this unbridled preaching of pardons makes it no easy matter1 even for learned men1 to rescue the reverence due to the pope from slander1 or even from the shrewd questionings of the laity4 #hb4 ,to wit3--,why does not the pope empty purgatory1 for the sake of holy love and of the dire need of the souls that are there1 if he redeems an infinite number of souls for the sake of miserable money with which to build a ,church8 ,the former reasons would be most just2 the latter is most trivial4 #hc4 ,again3--,why are mortuary and anniversary masses for the dead continued1 and why does he not return or permit the withdrawal of the endowments founded on their behalf1 since it is wrong to pray for the redeemed8 #hd4 ,again3--,what is this new piety of ,god and the pope1 that for money they allow a man who is impious and their enemy to buy out of purgatory the pious soul of a friend of ,god1 and do not rather1 because of that pious and beloved soul's own need1 free it for pure love's sake8 #he4 ,again3--,why are the penitential canons long since in actual fact and through disuse abrogated and dead1 now satisfied by the granting of indulgences1 as though they were still alive and in force8 #hf4 ,again3--,why does not the pope1 whose wealth is to-day greater than the riches of the richest1 build just this one church of ,st4 ,peter with his own money1 rather than with the money of poor believers8 #hg4 ,again3--,what is it that the pope remits1 and what participation does he grant to those who1 by perfect contrition1 have a right to full remission and participation8 #hh4 ,again3--,what greater blessing could come to the ,church than if the pope were to do a hundred times a day what he now does once1 and bestow on every believer these remissions and participations8 #hi4 ,since the pope1 by his pardons1 seeks the salvation of souls rather than money1 why does he suspend the indulgences and pardons granted heretofore1 since these have equal efficacy8 #ij4 ,to repress these arguments and scruples of the laity by force alone1 and not to resolve them by giving reasons1 is to expose the ,church and the pope to the ridicule of their enemies1 and to make ,christians unhappy4 #ia4 ,if1 therefore1 pardons were preached according to the spirit and mind of the pope1 all these doubts would be readily resolved2 nay1 they would not exist4 #ib4 ,away1 then1 with all those prophets who say to the people of ,christ1 ,peace1 peace1 and there is no peace6 #ic4 ,blessed be all those prophets who say to the people of ,christ1 ,cross1 cross1 and there is no cross6 #id4 ,christians are to be exhorted that they be diligent in following ,christ1 their ,head1 through penalties1 deaths1 and hell2 #ie4 ,and thus be confident of entering into heaven rather through many tribulations1 than through the assurance of peace4 ,this text was converted to ,,ascii format for ,project ,wittenberg by ,allen ,mulvey and is in the public domain4 ,you may freely
