,,preface ,the poems garnered up in this little volume were written at different periods in the life of the author1 dating from her early girlhood up to recent years4 ,they were not written with a view of making a book1 each poem being the spontaneous outpouring of a deeply poetic nature and called forth by some experience that claimed her attention4 ,the ,old ,man of the ,mountain1 for instance1 was written while the author was contemplating this lofty ,new ,hampshire crag1 whose rugged outlines resemble the profile of a human face4 ,inspired by the grandeur of this masterpiece of nature's handiwork1 and looking up through nature1 unto nature's ,god1 the poem began to take form in her thought1 and alighting from her carriage1 she seated herself by the roadside and began to write4 ,some tourists who were passing1 and who made her acquaintance1 asked her what she was writing1 and she replied by reading the poem to them4 ,they were so pleased with it that each requested a copy1 which was subsequently mailed to them4 ,similar requests continued to reach the author for years afterward1 until the poem finally found its way into print1 appearing1 together with ,the ,valley ,cemetery1 in a book ,gems for ,you1 published in ,manchester1 ,n4 ,h41 in #ahej1 and again in ,boston1 in #ahef4 ,the poem on the ,dedication of a ,temperance ,hall1 in ,lynn1 ,mass41 in #ahff1 was written for that occasion1 and was sung by the audience as a dedicatory hymn4 ,the ,liberty ,bells appeared in a ,lynn1 ,mass41 newspaper1 under the date of ,february #c1 #ahfe4 ,a note from the author1 which was published with the poem1 read as follows3 ,,mr4 ,,editor3--,in #ahce a mob in ,boston 7although ,boston has since been the pioneer of anti-slavery7 dispersed a meeting of the ,female ,anti-,slavery ,society1 and assailed the person of ,william ,lloyd ,garrison with such fury that the city authorities could protect him nowhere but in the walls of a jail4 ,to-day1 by order of ,governor ,andrew1 the bells are ringing to celebrate the passing of a resolution in ,congress prohibiting slavery in the ,united ,states4 ,all of the author's best-known hymns are included in this collection1 as well as many poems written in girlhood and during the years she resided in ,lynn1 ,mass41 and which appeared in various publications of that day4 ,among her earliest poems are ,upward1 ,resolutions for the ,day1 ,autumn 7written in a maple grove71 ,alphabet and ,bayonet1 and ,the ,country-,seat 7written while visiting a family friend in the beautiful suburbs of ,boston72 yet1 even these are characterized by the same lofty trend of thought that reached its fulness in her later productions4 ,in ,may1 #aiaj1 ,mrs4 ,eddy requested her publisher to prepare a few bound volumes of her poems1 for private distribution4 ,when this became known to her friends1 they urged her to allow a popular edition to be issued1 to which she assented4 ,with grateful acknowledgment1 therefore1 of this permission1 this little volume is presented to the public1 in the hope that these gems of purest thought from this spiritually-minded author will prove a joy to the heavy laden and a balm to the
