99 99 99 99 99 ,no4 #af ,,that ,,gospel ,,sermon ,,on ,,the ,,blessed ,,hope4 ,,by ,d4 ,l4 ,,moody4 ,a ,sermon delivered by ,d4 ,l4 ,,moody1 the ,evangelist1 at the ,great ,chicago ,tabernacle1 ,jan4 #e1 #ahgg4 ,repeated in the ,boston ,tabernacle1 ,april #bith4 ,in #b ,timothy1 #c3af1 ,paul declares3 ,all scripture is given by inspiration of ,god1 and is profitable for doctrine1 for reproof1 for correction1 for instruction in righteousness2 but there are some people who tell us when we take up prophecy that it is all very well to be believed1 but that there is no use in one trying to understand it2 these future events are things that the church does not agree about1 and it is better to let them alone1 and deal only with those prophecies which have already been fulfilled4 ,but ,paul does not talk that way2 he says3 ,all scripture is 444 profitable for doctrine4 ,if these people are right1 he ought to have said3 ,some scripture is profitable2 but you can not understand the prophecies1 so you had better let them alone4 ,if ,god did not mean to have us study the prophecies1 he would not have put them in the ,bible4 ,some of them are fulfilled1 and he is at work fulfilling the rest1 so that if we do not see them all completed in this life1 we shall in the world to come4 ,i do not want to teach anything to-day dogmatically1 on my own authority1 but to my mind this precious doctrine--for such ,i must call it--of the return of the ,lord to this earth is taught in the ,new ,testament as clearly as any other doctrine is2 yet ,i was in the church fifteen or sixteen years before ,i ever heard a sermon on it4 ,there is hardly any church that does not make a great deal of baptism1 but the ,new ,testament only speaks about baptism thirteen times1 while it speaks of the return of our ,lord fifty times2 and yet the church has had very little to say about it4 ,now1 ,i can see a reason for this3 the devil does not want us to see this truth1 for nothing would wake up the church so much4 ,the moment a man takes hold of the truth that ,jesus ,christ is coming back again to receive his friends to himself1 this world loses its hold upon him2 gas-stocks and water-stocks1 and stocks in banks and horse-railroads1 are of very much less consequence to him then4 ,his heart is free1 and he looks for the blessed appearing of his ,lord1 who at his coming will take him into his blessed kingdom4 ,in #b ,peter #a3bj1 we read3 ,no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation4 ,some people say3 ,o yes1 the prophecies are all well enough for the priests and doctors1 but not for the rank and file of the church4 ,but ,peter says3 ,the prophecy came not by the will of man1 but holy men spake as they were moved by the ,holy ,ghost1 and those men are the very ones who tell us of the return of our ,lord4 ,look at ,daniel #b3de1 where he tells the meaning of that stone which the king saw in his dream that was cut out of the mountain without hands1 and that broke in pieces the iron1 the brass1 the clay1 the silver1 and the gold4 ,the dream is certain and the interpretation thereof sure1 says ,daniel4 ,now we have seen the fulfillment of that prophecy all but the closing part of it4 ,the kingdoms of ,babylon and ,medo-,persia and ,greece and ,rome have all been broken in pieces1 and now it only remains for this stone cut out of the mountain without hands to smite the image and break it in pieces till it becomes like the dust of the summer threshing floor1 and for this stone to become a great mountain and fill the whole earth4 ,,but ,,how ,,is ,,he ,,going ,,to ,,come8 ,we are told how he is going to come4 ,when those disciples stood looking up into heaven at the time of his ascension1 there appeared two angels1 who said ,acts #a3aa3 ,ye men of ,galilee1 why stand ye gazing up into heaven8 ,this same ,jesus which is taken up from you into heaven shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven4 ,how did he go up8 ,he took his flesh and bones up with him4 ,look at me2 handle me2 give me something to eat2 a spirit hath not flesh and bones as ye see me have2 ,i am the identical one whom they crucified and laid in the grave4 ,now ,i am risen from the dead and am going up to heaven1 ,luke #bd3ci1dc4 ,he is gone1 say the angels1 but he will come again just as he went4 ,an angel was sent to announce his birth of the virgin2 angels sang of his advent in ,bethlehem2 an angel told the women of his resurrection2 and two angels told the disciples of his coming again4 ,it is the same testimony in all these cases4 ,i do not know why people should not like to read the ,bible1 and find out all about this precious doctrine of our ,lord's return4 ,some have gone beyond prophecy1 and tried to tell the very day he would come4 ,perhaps that is one reason why people do not believe this doctrine4 ,he is coming1 we know that2 but just when he is coming we do not know2 ,matt4 #bd3cf1 settles that4 ,the angels do not know2 and ,christ says that even he does not know1 but that is something the ,father keeps to himself4 ,if ,christ had said3 ,i will not come back for #b1jjj years1 none of his disciples would have begun to watch for him1 but it is the proper attitude of a ,christian to be always looking for his ,lord's return4 ,so ,god does not tell us just when he is to come1 but ,christ tells us to watch4 ,in this same chapter we find that he is to come unexpectedly and suddenly4 ,in the twenty-seventh verse we have these words3 ,for as the lightning cometh out of the east and shineth unto the west1 even so shall also the coming of the ,son of ,man be4 ,and again in the forty-fourth verse3 ,therefore be ye also ready1 for in such an hour as ye think not the ,son of ,man cometh4 ,some people say that means death3 but the ,word of ,god does not say it means death4 ,death is our enemy1 but our ,lord hath the keys of death2 he has conquered death1 hell1 and the grave1 and at any moment he may come to set us free from death1 and destroy our last enemy for us2 so the proper state for a believer in ,christ is waiting and watching for our ,lord's return4 ,in the last chapter of ,john there is a text that seems to settle this matter4 ,peter asks the question about ,john3 ,lord what shall this man do8 ,jesus said unto him1 ,if ,i will that he tarry till ,i come1 what is that to thee8 ,follow thou me4 ,then went this saying abroad among the brethren that that disciple should not die4 ,they did not think that the coming of the ,lord meant death2 there was a great difference between these two things in their minds4 ,,christ ,,is ,,the ,,prince ,,of ,,life4 ,there is no death where he is2 death flees at his coming2 dead bodies sprang to life when he touched them or spoke to them4 ,his coming is not death2 he is the resurrection and the life1 when he sets up his kingdom there is to be no death1 but life forevermore4 ,there is another mistake1 as you will find if you read your ,bible carefully4 ,some people think that at the coming of ,christ everything is to be done up in a few minutes2 but ,i do not so understand it4 ,the first thing he is to do is to take his ,church out of the world4 ,he calls the ,church his bride1 and he says he is going to prepare a place for her4 ,we may judge1 says one1 what a glorious place it will be from the length of time he is in preparing it1 and when the place is ready he will come and take the church to himself4 ,in the closing verses of the fourth chapter of #a ,thessalonians1 ,paul says3 ,if we believe that ,jesus died and rose again1 even so also them which sleep in ,jesus will ,god bring with him4444 ,we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the ,lord shall not prevent them which are asleep4 ,for the ,lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout1 with the voice of the archangel1 and with the trump of ,god1 and the dead in ,christ shall rise first4 ,then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the ,lord in the air1 and so shall we ever be with the ,lord4 ,wherefore1 comfort one another with these words4 ,that is the comfort of the church4 ,there was a time when ,i used to mourn that ,i should not be alive in the millennium2 but now ,i expect to be in the millennium4 ,dean ,alford says--and almost everybody bows to him in the matter of interpretation--that he must insist that this coming of ,christ to take his church to himself in the clouds is not the same event us that to judge the world at the last day4 ,the deliverance of the church is one thing1 judgment is another4 ,now1 ,i cannot find any place in the ,bible where it tells me to wait for signs of the coming of the millennium1 as the return of the ,jews1 and such like2 but it tells me to look for the coming of the ,lord2 to watch for it2 to be ready at midnight to meet him1 like those five wise virgins4 ,the trump of ,god may be sounded1 for anything we know1 before ,i finish this sermon--at any rate we are told that he will come as a thief in the night1 and at an hour when many look not for him4 ,some of you may shake your heads and say1 ,oh1 well1 that is too deep for the most of us2 such things ought not to be said before these young converts2 only the very wisest characters1 such as ministers and professors in the theological seminaries1 can understand them4 ,but my friends1 you find that ,paul wrote about these things to those young converts among the ,thessalonians1 and he tells them to comfort one another with these words4 ,here in the first chapter of #a ,thessalonians ,paul says1 ,ye turned to ,god from idols to serve the living and true ,god1 and to wait for his ,son from heaven whom he raised from the dead1 even ,jesus1 which delivered us from the wrath to come1 ,to wait for his ,son2 that is the true attitude of every child of ,god4 ,if he is doing that he is ready for the duties of life1 ready for ,god's work2 aye1 that makes him feel that he is just ready to begin to work for ,god4 ,then in #a ,thessalonians1 #b3ai1 he says3 ,for what is our hope1 or joy1 or crown of rejoicing8 ,are not even ye1 in the presence of our ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 at his coming8 ,and again1 in the third chapter1 at the thirteenth verse1 ,to the end that he may establish your hearts unblamable in holiness before ,god1 even our ,father1 at the coming of our ,lord ,jesus ,christ with all his saints4 ,still again1 in the fifth chapter1 ,for ye yourselves know perfectly that the day of the ,lord so cometh as a thief in the night4 ,but ye1 brethren1 are not in darkness1 that that day should over take you as a thief4 ,he has something to say about this same thing in every chapter1 indeed ,i have thought this ,epistle to the ,thessalonians might be called the gospel of ,christ's coming again4 ,there are three great facts foretold in the word of ,god3 ,first1 that ,christ should come2 that has been fulfilled4 ,second1 that the ,holy ,ghost should come2 that was fulfilled at ,pentecost1 and the church is able to testify to it by its experience of his saving grace4 ,third1 the return of our ,lord again from heaven--for this we are told to watch and wait till he come4 ,look at that account of the last hours of ,christ with his disciples4 ,what does ,christ say to them8 ,if ,i go away ,i will send death after you to bring you to me8 ,i will send an angel after you8 ,not at all4 ,he says3 ,i will come again and receive you unto myself4 ,if my wife were in a foreign country1 and ,i had a beautiful mansion all ready for her1 she would a good deal rather ,i should come and bring her unto it than to have me send some one else to bring her4 ,,the ,,church ,,is ,,the ,,lamb',s ,,wife4 ,he has prepared a mansion for his bride1 and he promises for our joy and comfort that he will come himself and bring us to the place he has been all this while preparing4 ,my friends it is perfectly safe to take the word of ,god as we find it4 ,if he tells us to watch1 then watch6 ,if he tells us to pray1 then pray6 ,if he tells us he will come again1 wait for him6 ,let the church bow to the word of ,god1 rather than trying to find out how such things can be4 ,behold1 ,i come quickly1 said ,christ4 ,even so1 come1 ,lord ,jesus1 should be the prayer of the church4 ,take the account of the words of ,christ at the communion table4 ,it seems to me the devil has covered up the most precious thing about it4 ,for as often as ye eat this bread and drink this cup ye do show forth the ,lord's death till he come4 ,but most people seem to think that the ,lord's table is the place for self-examination and repentance1 and making good resolutions4 ,not at all2 you spoil it that way2 it is to show forth the ,lord's death1 and we are to keep it up till he comes4 ,some people say1 ,i believe ,christ will come on the other side of the millennium4 ,where do you get it8 ,i cannot find it4 ,the word of ,god nowhere tells me to watch and wait for the coming of the millennium1 but for the coming of the ,lord4 ,i do not find any place where ,god says the world is to grow better and better1 and that ,christ is to have a spiritual reign on earth of a thousand years4 ,i find that the world is to grow worse and worse1 and at length there is to be a separation4 ,two women grinding at a mill1 one taken and the other left2 two men in one bed1 one taken and the other left1 ,luke #ag3cd1cf4 ,the church is to be translated out of the world1 we have two examples already1 two representatives1 as we might say1 of ,christ's kingdom1 of what is to be done for all his true believers4 ,enoch is the representative of the first dispensation1 ,elijah of the second1 and1 as a representative of the third dispensation1 we have the ,saviour himself1 who is entered into the heavens for us1 and become the first fruits of them that slept4 ,we are not to wait for the great white throne judgement1 but the glorified church is set on the throne with ,christ1 and to help to judge the world4 ,now1 some of you think this is a new and strange doctrine1 and that they who preach it are speckled birds4 ,but let me tell you that most of the spiritual men in the pulpits of ,great ,britain are firm in this faith4 ,spurgeon preaches it4 ,i have heard ,newman ,hall say that he knew no reason why ,christ might not come before he got through with his sermon4 ,but in certain wealthy and fashionable churches1 where they have the form of godliness1 but deny the power thereof1--just the state of things which ,paul declares shall be in the last days1--this doctrine is not preached or believed4 ,they do not want sinners to cry out in their meeting1 ,what must ,i do to be saved8 ,they want intellectual preachers who will cultivate their taste1 brilliant preachers who will rouse their imagination1 but they do not want the preaching that has in it the power of the ,holy ,ghost4 ,we live in the day of shams in religion4 ,the church is cold and formal2 may ,god wake us up6 ,and ,i know of no better way to do it than to get the church to looking for the return of our ,lord4 ,some people say1 ,oh1 you will discourage the young converts if you preach that doctrine4 ,well1 my friends1 that has not been my experience4 ,i have felt like working three times as hard ever since ,i came to understand that my ,lord was coming back again4 ,i look on this world as a wrecked vessel4 ,god has given me a life-boat1 and said to me1 ,moody1 save all you can4 ,god will come in judgment and burn up this world1 but the children of ,god do not belong to this world2 they are in it1 but not of it1 like a ship in the water4 ,this world is getting darker and darker2 its ruin is coming nearer and nearer2 if you have any friends on this wreck unsaved1 you had better lose no time in getting them off4 ,but some will say3 ,do you then make the grace of ,god a failure8 ,no1 grace is not a failure but man is4 ,the antediluvian world was a failure2 the ,jewish work was a failure2 man has been a failure everywhere1 when he has had his own way and been left to himself4 ,,christ ,,will ,,save ,,his ,,church4 ,but he will save them finally by taking them out of the world4 ,now1 do not take my word for it2 look this doctrine up in your ,bible1 and if you find it there1 bow down to it and receive it as the word of ,god4 ,take ,matthew #bd3dh1ej3 ,but and if that evil servant shall say in his heart1 my ,lord delayeth his coming 444 the ,lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him1 and in an hour that he is not aware of1 and shall cut him asunder and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites2 there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth4 ,take #b ,peter #c3d1e3 ,there shall come in the last days scoffers1 walking after their own lusts1 and saying1 where is the promise of his coming8 for since the fathers fell asleep all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation4 ,go out on the streets of ,chicago and ask men about the return of our ,lord1 and that is just what they would say3 ,ah1 yes1 the ,lord delayeth his coming6 ,behold1 ,i come quickly1 said ,christ to ,john1 and the last prayer in the ,bible is1 ,even so1 come ,lord ,jesus1 come quickly4 ,were the early ,christians disappointed then8 ,no2 no man is disappointed who obeys the voice of ,god4 ,the world waited for the first coming of the ,lord2 waited for #d1jjj years1 and then he came4 ,he was here only thirty-three years and then he went away2 but he left us a promise that he would come again2 and as the world watched and waited for his first coming and did not watch in vain1 so now to them who wait for his appearing shall he appear a second time unto salvation4 ,now let the question go round1 ,am ,i ready to meet the ,lord if he comes to-night8 ,be ye also ready1 for in such an hour as ye think not the ,son of man cometh4 ,there is another thought ,i want to call your attention to1 and that is this3 ,christ will bring all our friends1 with him when he comes4 ,all who have died in the ,lord are to be with him when he comes in the clouds of heaven4 ,blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection3 on such the second death has no power1 but they shall be priests of ,god and of ,christ1 and shall reign with him a thousand years1 ,rev4 #bj3f4 ,but the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were past2 this is the first resurrection 7verse #e74 ,that looks as if the church were to have a thousand years with ,christ before the final judgment1 when ,satan shall be cast out1 and there shall be new heavens and new earth wherein dwelleth righteousness4 ,now1 ,i want to give you some texts to study4 ,when we eat the ,lord's supper we show forth his death1 until he come4 #a ,cor4 xi4 #bf4 ,we are using our talents1 until he come4 ,luke xix4 #ac4 ,we are fighting the good fight of faith1 until he come4 #a ,tim vi4 #ab-ad4 ,we are enduring tribulation1 until he come4 #b ,thes4 i4 #g4 ,we are to be patient1 until he come4 ,james v4 #h4 ,we wait for the crown of righteousness1 until he come4 #b ,tim4 iv4 #h4 ,we wait for the crown of glory1 until he come4 #a ,pet4 v4 #d4 ,we wait for re-union with departed friends1 until he come4 #a ,thes4 iv4 #ac-ah4 ,we wait for ,satan to be bound1 until he come4 ,rev4 xx4 #c4 ,and so let us watch and wait till he comes4 ,d4 ,l4 ,moody1 who is perhaps the most popular and efficient preacher of the gospel of ,christ in the world1 to-day1 is evidently fully committed to a belief in the speedy coming of our ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 to judge the world and establish his eternal kingdom4 ,looking over the published reports of his sermons in ,great ,britain and in this country1 since the beginning of #ahgd1 ,i give extracts which go to show in a plain light the man's inner love and hope as relates to the last things1 and his warm1 bold1 consistent manner of expressing the same4 ,thousands pray1 ,god bless ,d4 ,l4 ,moody4 #a4 ,mr4 ,moody proclaims that the grand symbols of ,daniel's1 second and seventh chapters1 announce four dominant world empires1 and but four1 to cover all centuries of human probation4 #b4 ,that these kingdoms are and were ,babylon1 ,medo-,persia1 ,greece and ,rome4 #c4 ,that these have had their day of earthly supremacy and the last has nearly passed away4 #d4 ,that the fifth kingdom of ,daniel is ,god's1 to come in its order as the fifth1 to overthrow all previous kingdoms1 to be a visible and eternal kingdom1 and to be established by ,christ in person at his second coming4 #e4 ,that the stone cut from the mountain denotes ,christ himself1 at his appearing and kingdom1 whose advent is not far distant1 and for whose advent the whole creation groans4 ,rom4 #h3ai-bb4 #f4 ,that the last days1 described by our ,saviour in ,matt4 #bd3cg-ci as resembling the days of ,lot and ,noah1 are already here2 observing1 ,i do not think the day is far distant when our ,lord will return4 ,and again1 just as judgment overtook ,belshazzar carousing at his feast1 so will judgment come suddenly and swiftly upon the world revelling in its sins4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the foregoing he preached in the ,city ,hall1 ,glasgow1 ,march #aeth1 #ahgd1 before three thousand people4 ,on the same day he preached on ,christ's ,second ,coming in the ,free church 7,pres471 telling the churches that every thirtieth verse in the ,new ,testament bears on that glorious coming2 and says the ,london ,christian1 ,with his usual power he showed what a mighty motive this doctrine is to all who are winning souls4 ,he himself had found it rousing him to ten-fold more effort to save all that could be rescued from the coming wreck4 ,in ,philadelphia1 in a discourse on ,daniel's second chapter1 he said3 ,this dream has been nearly fulfilled as ,daniel interpreted it4 ,in the present age the prophecy is nearly completed1 and the hour of the ,lord's second coming
