the ,,all things that are to be restored before the second advent of ,jesus ,christ1 seeing that the ,imperial and ,papal power of ,rome1 since the days of the ,apostles1 have changed the seventh day ,sabbath to the first day of the week6 ,twenty days before ,god re-enacted and wrote the commandments with his finger on tables of stone1 he required his people to keep the ,sabbath4 ,exo4 xvi3 #bg1 the law and the prophets4 ,then it would be impossible for the ,sabbath to be left out4 ,a question was asked1 what shall ,i do to inherit eternal life8 ,says ,jesus1 ,if thou wilt enter into life keep the commandments--xix4 ,here he quotes five from the tables of stone4 ,it is still clearer in ,luke x4 #be1 #bh4 ,what is written in the law8 how readest thou8 ,here he gives the ,savior's point4 ,the uncompromising advocate for present truth1 which feeds and nourishes the little flock in whatever country or place1 is the restorer of all things2 one man like ,john the ,baptist1 cannot discharge this duty to every kindred1 nation1 tongue and people1 and still remain in one place4 ,the truth is what we want4 ,,fairhaven1 ,,august1 #ahdf4 ,,joseph ,,bates4 iii,,preface ,,to ,,second ,,edition4 ,,to ,,the ,,little ,,flock4 ,my reasons for issuing a second edition of this book are1 ,first1 the increasing demand for them1 from different quarters4 ,second1 it affords me an opportunity of spreading additional light from the ,word on this important subject of present truth4 ,much more is said about it than any doctrine in the bible1 beginning in ,genesis1 and continuing down to the closing up of the last message which ,god ever gave to man1 proving clearly that the doing of these commandments saves the soul2 showing it more clearly than a strict adherence to the ,constitution of these ,united ,states proves the man a sound patriot4 ,therefore in this sense they are strictly the constitution of the bible1 the everlasting covenant between ,god and man1 and can never be changed or altered while man is stamped with the image of ,god4 ,why then has the church lost sight of them8 or rather the ,covenant in them of the #gth day ,sabbath8 ,see history #dc;d page1 and ,dan4 vii4 #be4 ,well then how does it come to be understood at this point of time8 ,answer4--,the angel ,gabriel told ,daniel that knowledge should increase in the time of the end4 ,this of course included the scriptures1 particularly since the proclamation of the everlasting ,gospel in ,rev4 xiv3 #f1 #ac4 ,it is well known how this knowledge has increased since #ahdj4 ,these ten ,commandments being the foundation of the scriptures4 7,see ,matt4 xxii47 ,god1 in a peculiar manner1 to instruct his honest1 confiding children1 shows them spiritually under the sounding of the seventh ,angel1 the ark of his testament after the temple of ,god was opened in heaven4 xi3 #ai4 ,these are the ten commandments4 ,here then ,i understand is where the spirit made an indelible impression to search the scriptures for the ,,testimony of ,god4 ,it was done1 and published to the world by many1 that the professed church had been walking in open violation of the fourth commandment since the days of the ,apostles4--,every one that has read the history of this ,,testimony of ,god in the ark1 must see the mighty power that accompanied it through ,israel and ,philistine1 one of the greatest wonders that ever existed ivin this world1 a pattern only of what was seen in the opening of the ,temple in heaven4 ,in the xiv3 #ab1 ,john sees them obeying its dictates4 ,in the xv ch4 he describes the division as in the xiv ch4 they were rejoicing over the victory of the beast1 7got out of the churches17 standing on or by the sure word of prophecy1 7some say immortality47 ,the #dth v4 says1 for all nations ,,shall come 7in the future7 and worship before thee4 ,after that ,i looked and behold the ,temple of the ,tabernacle of the ,,testimony in heaven was open1 #eth v4 7that is after their songs of rejoicing47 ,the ,temple which contained the ,tabernacle1 the ark of the testimony1 or ten commandments was open4 ,now this ,temple without doubt is the new ,jerusalem4 ,who cannot see that this ,temple has been opened for some purpose1 but not to be entered by man until the seven last plagues are fulfilled4 ,here is a space of time in which the commandments will be fully kept4 ,i do not say that this view of the ,ark in ,rev4 is positive1 but ,i think the inference is strong4 ,i cannot see what else it refers to4 ,on pages #ae1 #af1 ,i have added about #bd lines in further explanation of ,coll4 ii3 #ad1 #ag4 ,on #afth page1 ,i have also added about as much more to illustrate and distinguish the ,sabbath feasts of the ,jewish nation4 ,on the nineteenth page ,i have given about forty lines on the #b;d ,cor4 iii1 which ,i think must settle these points fully4 ,the last fourteen pages are principally devoted to the covenants and what they are intended for4 ,the two covenants made with man in this state of mortality1 is first by ,god delivered to ,moses4 ,the second or new1 by ,jesus ,christ and his disciples4 ,paul in speaking of them to the ,gal4 iv3 #bd1 says these are ,,the ,,two ,,covenants4 ,all the others belong to the ,saints after the second advent4 ,if any of the brethren feel it a duty to help pay for the paper and printing of this edition the way is open1 otherwise it will be done by a few individuals here1 as was the first edition4 ,this work is sent forth gratuitously1 with a fervent prayer that these present precious truths may be set home on the soul preparatory to the coming judgment4 ,since issuing the first edition in ,august last1 we have publicly called on all the advent lecturers and believers to show us if we were wrong on the ,lord's ,sabbath4 ,once more we now challenge the ,christian world to show us if they can from the ,bible1 where we have taken a wrong view of the seventh day ,sabbath4 ,fairhaven1 ,jan4 #ahdg4 ,j4 ,b4 #e,,the ,,sabbath ,,first ,,question ,,is1 ,,when ,,was ,,the ,,sabbath ,,instituted8 ,those who are in the habit of reading the ,scriptures just as they find them1 and of understanding them according to the established rules of interpretation1 will never be at a loss to understand so plain a passage as the following3 ,and ,god blessed the seventh day1 and sanctified it2 because that in it he had rested from all his work which ,god created and made4 ,gen4 ii3 #c4 ,moses1 when referring to it1 says to the children of ,israel4 ,this is that which the ,lord hath said1 to-morrow is the ,,rest of the holy ,sabbath unto the ,lord4 ,exod4 xvi3 #bc4 ,then we understand that ,god established the seventh day ,sabbath in ,paradise1 on the very day when he rested from all his work1 and not one week1 nor one year1 nor two thousand five hundred and fourteen years afterwards1 as some would have it4 ,is it not plain that the ,sabbath was instituted to commemorate the stupendous work of creation1 and designed by ,god to be celebrated by his worshipers as a weekly ,sabbath1 in the same manner as the ,israelites were commanded to celebrate the ,passover1 from the very night of their deliverance till the resurrection of ,jesus from the dead2 or as we1 as a nation1 annually celebrate our national independence3 or as type answers to antetype1 so we believe this must run down1 to the keeping of the ,sabbath to the people of ,god in the immortal state4 ,it is argued by some1 that because no mention is made of the ,sabbath from its institution in ,paradise till the falling of the manna in the wilderness1 mentioned in ,exo4 xvi3 #ae1 that it was therefore here instituted for the ,jews1 but #fwe think there is bible argument sufficient to sustain the reply of ,jesus to the ,pharisees1 that the ,sabbath was made for ,,man and not man for the ,sabbath4 ,if it was made for any one exclusively it must have been for ,adam the father of us all1 two thousand years before ,abraham who is claimed as the father of the ,jews was born4 ,john says1 the old commandment was from the beginning--#a2 ii3 #g4 ,there is pretty strong inference that the antideluvians measured time by weeks from the account given by ,noah1 when the waters of the deluge began to subside4 ,he sent out a dove which soon returned4 ,at the end of seven days he sent her out again2 and at the end of seven days more1 he sent her out a third time4 ,now why this preference for the number seven8 why not five or ten days1 or any other number8 ,can it be supposed that his fixing on upon seven was accidential8 ,how much more natural to conclude that it was in obedience to the authority of ,god1 as expressed in the #b;d chap4 of ,gen4 ,a similar division of time is incidentally mentioned in ,gen4 xxix2 fulfil her week and we will give thee this also2 and ,jacob did so and fulfilled her week4 ,now the word week is every where used in ,scripture as we use it2 it never means more nor less than seven days 7except as symbols of years7 and one of them was in all other cases the ,sabbath4 ,but now suppose there had been an entire silence on the subject of the ,sabbath for this twenty-five hundred years1 would that be sufficient evidence that there was none4 ,if so1 we have the same evidence that there was no ,sabbath from the reign of ,joshua till the reign of ,david1 four hundred and six years1 as no mention is made of it in the history of that period4 ,but who can be persuaded that ,samuel and the pious ,judges of ,israel did not regard the ,sabbath4 ,what does ,god say of ,abraham8 that he obeyed my voice1 and kept my charge1 my commandments1 my statutes and my laws4 7,see what he calls them in ,exo4 xvi3 #bg1 #cj47 ,this1 of course1 includes the whole4 ,then ,abraham reverenced ,god's ,sabbath4 ,once more1 there is no mention of the circumcision from the days of ,joshua till the days of ,jeremiah1 a period of more than eight hundred years4 ,will it be believed that ,samuel and ,david1 and all those pious worthies with the whole ,jewish nation1 neglected that essential seal of the covenant for eight hundred years8 ,it cannot be admitted for a moment4 ,how #gthen can any one suppose from the alleged silence of the sacred history that ,adam1 ,enoch1 ,noah and ,abraham1 kept no ,sabbath because the fact was not stated8 ,if we turn to ,jer4 ix3 #be1 #bf1 we find that they had not neglected this right of circumcision1 only they had not circumcised their hearts2 so that the proof is clear1 that silence respecting the keeping any positive command of ,god1 is no evidence that it is not in full force4 ,again1 if the ,sabbath was not instituted in ,paradise1 why did ,moses mention it in connection with the creation of the world8 ,why not reserve this fact for two or three thousand years in his history1 until the manna fell in the wilderness1 7see ,exo4 xvi3 #bc7 and then state that the seventh day ,sabbath commenced1 as some will have it8 ,i answer1 for the very best of reasons1 that it did not commence there4 ,let us examine the text4 ,and it came to pass1 that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread as on any preceding day1 and all the rulers of the congregation came and told ,moses4 ,and he said unto them this is that which the ,lord hath said1 to-morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath1 bake that which ye will bake1 c4 c4 ,if this had been the establishing of the holy ,sabbath and ,moses had said to-morrow shall be the ,sabbath1 then would it have been clear2 but no1 he speaks as familiarly about it as we do when we say that to-morrow is the ,sabbath1 showing conclusively that it was known before1 or how could the people have known that they must gather two day's manna on ,friday the sixth day1 unless they had had some previous knowledge of the ,sabbath8 for ,moses had already taught them not to leave any of it until the morning--v4 #ai4 ,the #bjth verse shows that the ,sabbath had not yet come since their receiving the manna1 because it spoiled and bred worms by the next morning2 whereas1 on the ,sabbath morning it was found sweet and eatible--#bdth v4 ,this was the thirtieth day after leaving ,egypt 7#ast v47 and twenty days before it was given on ,sinai4 ,the weekly ,sabbath then was appointed before this or before the days of ,moses4 ,where was it then8 ,answer in the second chapter of ,genesis and no where else2 and the same week on which the manna fell1 the weekly ,sabbath was revived among or with ,god's chosen people4 ,grotius tells us that the memory of the creation's being performed in seven days1 was preserved not only among the ,greeks and ,italians1 but among the ,celts and ,indians4 ,other #hwriters say ,assyrians1 ,egyptians1 ,arabians1 ,britons and ,germans1 all of whom divide their time into weeks4 ,philo says the ,sabbath is not peculiar to any one people or country1 but is common to all the world4 ,josephus states that there is no city either of ,greeks or barbarians or any other nation1 where the religion of the ,sabbath is not known4 ,but as they1 like the great mass of ,god's professed people in christendom1 paid little or no heed to what ,god had said about the particular day1 7except the ,jews1 and a few others7 they 7as we are informed in history7 adopted peculiar days to suit themselves1 viz3 the christian nations chose to obey the ,pope of ,rome1 who changed the seventh day ,sabbath to the first day1 and called it the holy ,sabbath2 the ,persians selected ,monday2 the ,grecians ,tuesday2 the ,assyrians ,wednesday2 the ,egyptians ,thursday2 the ,turks ,friday1 and the ,jews the seventh day1 ,saturday1 as ,god had commanded4 ,three standing miracles a week1 for about forty years annually1 ought to perpetuate the ,sabbath4 #ast1 double the quantity of manna on the sixth day2 #b;d1 none on the seventh2 #c;d1 did not spoil on the seventh day4 ,if it does not matter which day you keep holy to the ,lord1 then all these nations are right4 ,now reflect one moment on this1 and then open your bible and read the commandment of the ,god of all these nations6 ,,remember6 7what you have been taught before7 the ,sabbath day to keep it holy2 7which day is it ,lord87 the ,,seventh is the ,sabbath of the ,lord thy ,god3 in it thou shalt not do any work1 thou nor thy son1 nor thy daughter1 thy man servant nor thy maid servant1 nor thy cattle1 nor thy stranger1 that is within thy gates4 ,who is the stranger8 7,gentiles47 ,now the reason for it will carry us back to paradise4 ,for in six days the ,lord made heaven and earth1 the sea1 and all that in them is2 and rested on the ,,seventh2 wherefore the ,lord blessed the ,sabbath day and hallowed it4 ,wherefore the children of ,israel shall keep the ,sabbath1 to observe the ,sabbath throughout their generations for a perpetual covenant2 it is a ,,sign between me and the children of ,israel forever4 7,why is it ,lord87 ,for in six days the ,lord made heaven and earth1 and on the ,,seventh day he rested and was refreshed4 ,exo4 xx and xxxi4--,which day now will you choose8 ,o1 says the reader1 the seventh if ,i knew which of the days it was4 ,if you don't know1 why are you so sure that the first day is right8 ,o1 #i;because the history of the world has settled that and this is the most we can know4 ,very well then1 does not the seventh come the day before the eighth8 ,if we have not got the days of the week right now1 it is not likely that we ever shall4 ,god does not require of us any more than what we know2 by that we shall be judged4 ,luke xxii3 #ee1 #ef4 ,once more2 think you that the spirit of ,god ever directed ,moses when he was giving the history of the creation of the world1 to write that he 7,god7 blessed the seventh day and sanctified it1 because that in it he had rested from all his work4 unless he meant it to be dated from that very day8 ,why1 this is as clear to the unbiassed mind as it is that ,god created man the sixth day4 ,would it not be the height of absurdity to attempt to prove that ,god only intended ,adam should be created at some future period1 or that the creation of the heavens and earth was not in the beginning1 but some twenty five hundred years afterwards8 ,all this would be as cogent reasoning as it would be to argue that ,god did not intend this day of rest should commence until about twenty-five hundred years afterwards4 7,the word ,sabbath signifies rest47 ,it follows then irresistibly1 that the weekly ,sabbath was not made for the ,jews only1 7but as ,jesus says1 for 'man'7 for the ,jews had no existence until more than two thousand years after it was established4 ,president ,humphrey in his essays on the ,sabbath says1 ,that he 7,god7 instituted it when he rested from all his work1 on the seventh day of the first week1 and gave it primarily to our first parents1 and through them to all their posterity2 that the observance of it was enjoined upon the children of ,israel soon after they left ,egypt1 not in the form of a new enactment1 but as an ancient institution which was far from being forgotten1 though it had doubtless been greatly neglected under the cruel domination of their heathen masters2 that it was re-enacted with great pomp and solemnity1 and written in stone by the finger of ,god at ,sinai2 that the sacred institution then took the form of a statute1 with explicit prohibitions and requirements1 and has never been repealed or altered since2 that it can never expire of itself1 because it has no limitation4 ,in ,deut4 vii3 #f-h1 ,god gives his reasons for selecting the ,jews to keep his covenant in preference to any other nation2 only seventy at first--x3 #bb4 ,god calls it his ,sabbath1 and refers us right back to the creation for #ajproof4 ,for in six days the ,lord made heaven and earth and sea1 and all that in them is1 and rested on the seventh1 c4 ,here then we stand fixed by the immutable law of ,god1 and the word of ,jesus1 that the ,sabbath was made for man6 ,paul says1 there is no respect of persons with ,god4 ,rom4 ii3 #aa4 ,isaiah shows us plainly that the ,jew is not the only one to be blessed for keeping the ,sabbath4 ,he says ,blessed is the man 7are not the ,gentiles men87 that keepeth the ,sabbath from polluting it4 ,also the sons of the stranger1 7who are these if they are not ,gentiles87 every one that keepeth the ,sabbath from polluting it1 7does he mean me8 yes1 every gentile in the universe1 or else he respects persons7 even them will ,i bring to my holy mountain and make them joyful in my house of prayer2 for my house shall be called an house of prayer for all people4 ,isa4 lvi3 #b1 #f1 #g4 ,if this promise is not to the ,gentile as well as the ,jew1 then the house of prayer for all people is no promise to the ,gentile4 ,now we ask1 if ,god has ever abrogated the law of the ,sabbath8 ,if he has it can easily be found4 ,we undertake to say without fear of contradiction1 he has not made any such record in the bible2 but on the contrary1 he calls it a perpetual covenant1 a sign between me and the children of ,israel forever1 for the reason that he rested on the seventh day1 ,exo4 xxxi3 #af1 #ag4 ,says one1 has not the ceremonial law been annulled and nailed to the cross8 ,yes1 but what of that8 ,why then the ,sabbath must be abolished1 for ,paul says so6 ,where8 ,why in ,cols4 #b;d chapter1 and xiv4 ,romans4 ,how can you think that ,god ever inspired ,paul to say that the seventh day ,sabbath was made void or nailed to the cross at the crucifixion1 when he never intended any such change2 if he did1 he certainly would have deceived the inhabitants of ,jerusalem1 in the promise which he made them about two thousand four hundred and forty-six years ago6 ,turn now to ,jer4 xvii3 #be1 and tell me if he did not promise the inhabitants of ,jerusalem that their city should remain forever if they would hallow the sabbath day4 ,now suppose the inhabitants of ,jerusalem had entered into this agreement1 and entailed it upon their posterity 7because you see it could not have been fulfilled unless it had continued from generation to generation17 to keep the ,sabbath holy1 would not ,god have been bound to let ,jerusalem remain forever8 ,you say yes4 ,well1 then1 ,i ask you to show how he could have #aakept that promise inviolate if he intended in less than six hundred and fifty years to change this seventh day ,sabbath1 and call the first day of the week the ,sabbath1 or abolish it altogether8 ,i say1 therefore1 if there has been any change one way or the other in the ,sabbath1 since that promise1 it would be impossible to understand any other promise in the ,bible2 how much more reasonable to believe ,god than man4 ,if men will allow themselves to believe the monstrous absurdity that ,,forever1 as in this promise1 ended at the resurrection1 then they can easily believe that the ,sabbath was changed from the seventh to the first day of the week4 ,or if they choose the other extreme1 abolished until the people of ,god should awake to be clothed on with immortality4 ,heb4 iv3 #i4 ,now does it not appear plain that the ,sabbath is from ,god1 and that it is coeval and co-extensive 7as is the institution of marriage7 with the world4 ,that it is without limitation2 that there is not one thus saith the ,lord that it ever was or ever will be abolished1 in time or eternity4--,see ,exod4 xxxi3 #af1 #ag2 and ,isa4 lxvi3 #bb1 #bd2 ,heb iv3 #d1 #i4 ,but let us return and look at the subject as we have commenced in the light of ,paul's argument to the ,romans and ,collossians1 for here is where all writers on this subject1 for the change or the overthrow of the seventh day ,sabbath attempt to draw their strong arguments4 ,the second question then1 is this3 ,,has ,,the ,,sabbath ,,been ,,abolished ,,since ,,the ,,seventh ,,day ,,of ,,creation8 ,,if ,,so1 ,,when1 ,,and ,,where ,,is ,,the ,,proof8 ,the text already referred to1 is in ,rom4 xiv3 #e1 #f4--,one man esteemeth one day above another3 another esteemeth every day alike4 ,let every man be persuaded in his own mind4 ,he that regardeth the day1 regardeth it unto the ,lord2 and he that regardeth not the day to the ,lord1 he doth not regard it4 ,does the apostle here mean to say1 that under the new or ,christian dispensation it is a matter of indifference which day of the week is kept as a ,sabbath1 or whether any sabbath at all is kept8 ,was that institution which the people of ,god had been commanded to call a delight1 the holy of the ,lord1 honorable1 now to be esteemed of so carnal a nature as to be ranked among the things which ,jesus took out of the way1 nailing it to #ab;his cross4 ,if this be true1 then has ,jesus1 in the same manner1 abolished the eight last verses in the fifty-eighth of ,isaiah1 and the #b;d1 #fth and #gth verses of the #efth chapter have no reference to the ,gentile since the crucifixion4 ,o ,lord help us rightly to understand and divide thy word4 ,but is it not evident from the four first verses in the same chapter of ,romans1 that ,paul is speaking of feast days2 ,hear him explain4 ,destroy not him with thy meat for whom ,christ died4 ,for the kingdom of ,god is not meat and drink4 #ae1 #ag v1 also #bj1 #bc4 ,giving them again in substance the decrees which had been given by the ,apostles in their first conference1 in ,a4 ,d4 #ea2 held at ,jerusalem4 ,see ,acts xv3 #ai4 ,james proposes their letter to the ,gentiles should be that they abstain from pollution of ,idols1 and from fornication1 and from things strangled1 and from blood2 to which the conference all agreed4 ,now please read their unanimous decrees 7xvi3 #d17 from twenty-three to thirty verses4 ,for it seemed good to the ,holy ,ghost and to us1 to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things4 ,that ye abstain from meats offered to ,idols1 and from blood1 and from things strangled1 and from fornication1 from which if ye keep yourselves ye shall do well4 ,reading along to the #acth of the next chapter1 we find ,paul establishing the ,churches with these decrees2 7see #d1 #e17 and at ,philippi he holds his meeting1 7not in the ,jews ,synagogue7 but at the river's side1 on the ,sabbath day4 ,a little from this it is said that ,paul is in ,thesalonica preaching on the ,sabbath days4 ,luke says this was his manner4 ,what was it8 ,why1 to preach on the ,sabbath days 7not #ast days47 ,observe here were three ,sabbaths in succession4 xvii3 #b4 ,a little while from this ,paul locates himself in ,corinth1 and there preaches to the ,jews and ,greeks 7or ,gentiles7 a year and six months every ,sabbath4 ,now this must have been seventy-eight in succession4 xviii3 #d1 #aa4 ,does this look like abolishing the ,sabbath day8 ,has anything been said about the #ast day yet8 ,no1 we shall speak of that by and by4 ,before this he was in ,antioch4 ,and when the ,jews were gone out of the synagogue the ,,gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next ,sabbath4 ,and the next ,sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of ,god4 xiii3 #db1 #dd4 ,here is proof that the ,gentiles kept the ,sabbath4 ,now ,i wish to place the other strong text which is so strangely adhered to for abolishing or changing this ,sab#ac;bath along side of this1 that we may understand his meaning4 ,blotting out the hand-writing of ordinances that was against us1 which was contrary to us1 and took it out of the way1 nailing it to his cross4 ,let no man therefore judge you in meat1 or in drink1 or in respect of a holy day1 or of the new moon1 or of the ,sabbath days4 ,coll4 ii3 #ad1 #af4 ,now here is one of the strong arguments adhered to by all those who say the seventh day ,sabbath was abolished at the crucifixion of our ,lord3 while on the other hand by the great mass of the ,christian world1 7so called17 the seventh day ,sabbath ceased here1 and in less than forty-eight hours the change was made to the first day of the week4 ,now remember ,paul's manner1 7before stated7 itinerating from city to city and nation to nation1 always preaching to ,jews and ,gentiles on the seventh day ,sabbath1 7for there is no other day called the ,lord's ,sabbath in the ,bible47 ,now if the ,apostle did mean to include the ,sabbath of the ,lord ,god with the ,jewish feasts and ,sabbaths in the text1 then the course he took to do so1 was the strangest imaginable4 ,his manner always was1 as recorded1 with the exception of one night1 to preach on the very day that he was laboring to abolish4 ,if you will look at the date in your bibles1 you will learn this same apostle had been laboring in this way as a special messenger to the ,gentiles1 between twenty and thirty years since 7as you say7 the ,sabbath was changed or abolished1 and yet never uttered one word with respect to any other day in the week to be set apart as a holy day or ,sabbath4 ,i understand all the arguments about his laboring in the ,jewish ,synagogue on their ,sabbath1 because they were open for worship on that day1 c41 but he did not always preach in their ,synagogues4 ,he says that he preached the ,kingdom of ,god1 and labored in his own hired house for two years4 ,he also established a daily meeting for disputation in the school of ,tyranus4--,acts xix3 #i4 ,again he says1 ,i have kept back ,,nothing that was ,,profitable unto you4 7,now if the ,sabbath had been changed or abolished1 would it not have been profitable to have told them so87 and have taught you publicly1 and from house to house4 ,for ,i have not shunned to declare unto you ,,all the council of ,god4--,acts xx2 #bj1 #bg4 ,then it is clear that he taught them by example that the ,sabbath of the ,lord ,god was not abolished4 ,luke says it was the custom 7or manner7 of ,christ #adto teach in the synagogues on the ,sabbath day4 iv3 #af1 #ca4 ,mark says1 ,and when the ,sabbath day was come he began to teach in their synagogue4 ,mark vi3 #b4--,now if ,jesus was about to abolish or change this ,sabbath1 7which belonged to the first code1 the moral law1 and not the ceremonial1 the second code1 which was to be nailed to his cross1 or rather1 as said the angel ,gabriel to ,daniel1 ix3 #bg1 he 7,christ7 in the midst of the week shall cause the sacrifice and oblation to cease1 meaning that the ,jewish sacrifices and offerings would cease at his death47 ,jesus did not attend to any of the ceremonies of the ,jews except the passover and the feasts of tabernacles4 ,why did he say1 ,think not ,i am come to destroy the law or the prophets8 ,i am not come to destroy but fulfill4 ,one jot or one title shall in no wise pass from the law until all be fulfilled4 ,whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments c4 ,did he mean the ten commandments8 ,yes2 for he immediately points out the third1 not to take ,god's name in vain2 sixth and seventh1 not to kill nor to commit adultery1 and styles them the least4 ,then1 the others1 which include the fourth1 of course were greater than these4 ,matt4 v2 #ag-ai1 #ba1 #bg1 #cc1 and were not to be broken nor pass away4 ,then the ,sabbath stands unchanged4 ,almost every writer which ,i have read on the subject of abolishing or changing the seventh day ,sabbath1 calls it the ,jewish ,sabbath1 hence their difficulty4 ,how can it be the ,jewish ,sabbath when it was established two thousand years before there was a ,jew on the face of the earth1 and certainly twenty-five hundred before it was embodied in the decalogue1 or re-enacted and written in stone by the finger of ,god at ,sinai4 ,god called this ,,his ,sabbath1 and ,jesus says it was made for man1 7not particularly for the ,jews47 ,well1 says one1 what is the meaning of the texts which you have quoted1 where it speaks of ,sabbaths8--,answer3 ,these are the ,jewish ,sabbaths6 which belong to them as a nation1 and are connected with their feasts4 ,god by ,hosea makes this distinction1 and says1 ,i will also cause all her mirth to cease1 her feast days1 her new moons1 and her ,sabbaths1 and all her solemn feasts4 ,these then belong to the text quoted1 and not ,god's ,sabbath4 ,do you ask for the proof8 ,see xxiii ,levit4 #d4 ,these are the ,,feasts of the ,lord1 which ye shall proclaim in their #aeseasons1 ,,every ,,thing ,,upon ,,his ,,day--#cgth v4 7,may we not deviate a little8 ,if you do it will be at your peril47 ,fifteenth and sixteenth verses give them a fifty day's ,sabbath2 twenty-fourth verse says3 ,speak unto the children of ,israel1 saying in the seventh month in the first day of the month1 shall ye have a ,sabbath1 a memorial of blowing of trumpets1 an holy convocation4 ,also on the tenth day of the seventh month there shall be a day of atonement4 ,it shall be unto you a ,sabbath of rest4 #bg1 #cb4 ,also on the fifteenth day of the seventh month when ye shall have gathered in the fruit of the land1 ye shall keep a feast unto the ,lord seven days4 ,on the first shall be a ,sabbath1 and on the eighth day shall be a ,sabbath4 #cith v4 ,and ,moses declared unto the children of ,israel the ,,feasts of the ,lord4 #ddth v4 ,now here we have ,,four kinds of ,jewish ,sabbaths1 also called ,,feasts of the ,lord1 to be kept annually4 ,the first fifty days or seven weeks ,sabbath ends the third month1 seventh4 ,in three months and twenty-four days more commences the second ,sabbath1 seventh month1 first2 the next1 the tenth2 the last the fifteenth of the month4 ,between the first two ,sabbaths there is an interval of one hundred and twelve days2 the next two1 ten days1 and the next1 five days4 ,now it can be seen at a glance1 that neither of these ,sabbaths could be on the seventh day any oftener than other annual feast could come on that day4 ,these then are what ,hosea calls ,,her ,sabbaths4 ,paul calls them ,,holy ,,days1 new moons1 and sabbaths2 and this is what they are stated to be4 ,the first day of the seventh month is a new moon ,,sabbath1 the tenth is a ,sabbath of rest and ,holy convocation1 a day of atonement1 and the fifteenth a feast of ,sabbaths4 ,do you ask for any more evidence that these are the ,jewish ,sabbaths1 and that ,god's ,sabbath is separate from them8 ,read then what ,god directed ,moses to write in the third verse3 ,six days shall work be done1 but the seventh day is the ,sabbath of rest1 an holy convocation1 ye shall do no work therein1 it is the ,sabbath of the ,,lord in your dwellings4 ,now ,moses has here declared from the mouth of the ,lord1 that these are ,,all the feast of the ,lord1 7there is no more nor less7 and every thing is to be upon his day1 and he has clearly and definitely separated his ,sabbath from the other four4 ,but let us look at the text again4 ,coll4 ii2 #ad-af4 ,see #ag v4 #afwhich are a shadow of things to come4 ,what did the apostle say were shadows8 ,why1 meat1 drink1 holy day1 new moon1 sabbath days4 #afth v4 ,heb4 ix3 #aj4 ,what does he mean by shadow8 ,see ,heb4 x3 #a1 #b4 ,just what ,i have stated on page #ad4 ,now here we have one clear1 positive point4 ,if the seventh day ,sabbath is included in the #agth verse1 then it must be a shadow2 if it is not a shadow1 then ,paul has no reference to it1 and it stands forever6 ,moses says the ten commandments were written by the finger of ,god on tables of stone2 whatever ,god has done with his own hand is stamped with immortality1 and is as enduring as the sun1 moon and stars4 ,psl4 viii3 #c4 ,but if the #dth commandment1 the ,sabbath of the ,lord is a shadow then all the other nine commandments must be4 ,let us look at what are called by our ,lord the least commandments1 the #fth and #gth4 ,thou shalt not kill4--,thou shalt not commit adultry4 ,math4 v3 #ai1 #ba1 #bg4 ,are these shadows8 ,is there an individual with common sense in the world that dare risk his reputation in such kind of logic8 ,then it is as clear as a sun beam that all the others are tangible substances1 and will continue in full force while immortality endures2 especially the #dth commandment1 the ,sabbath4 ,see ,isa4 #ff3 #bc1 ,heb4 iv3 #i1 ,rev4 #bb3 #ad4 ,and in the #bhth and #bith chapters of ,numbers the sacrifices and offerings for each of these days are made so plain1 beginning with the ,sabbath1 #ith v4 that we have only to read the following to understand4 #bf4 xxix3 #a4 ,first day1 seventh month1 7new moon27 #gth v41 #ajth day ,sabbath2 #abth v41 #aeth day ,sabbath1 and #ceth v41 #bc;d day ,sabbath4 ,i will endeavor to present it in a clearer point of view3 ,feast by fire connected with the ,lord's and the ,jewish ,sabbaths4 ,the ,daily or continual always #b lambs morning and evening4 #c quarts of flour for a meat offering1 #b-a_/b pints of oil1 #e pints of wine--xxviii3 #c-g4 ,,the ,,sabbath ,,day4 #b lambs1 and six quarts of flour with oil4 ,here follow the ,jewish feasts with their ,sabbaths3 #ast4--#gth week ,sabbath1 #b bullocks1 #a ram1 #g lambs1 #a goat1 #bd quarts of flour--xxviii3 #af1 #ag4 #b;d4--#gth month ,sabbath1 #a bullock1 #a ram1 #g lambs1 #a kid1 #cf quarts of flour--xxix3 #a-e4 #c;d4--#ajth of #gth month ,sabbath1 #a bullock1 #a ram1 #g lambs1 #b kids1 #cf quarts of flour--#g-aa4 #dth4--#aeth of #gth month ,sabbath1 #ac bullocks1 #b rams1 #ad lambs1 #b kids1 #d-a_/b bushels of flour--#ab-af4 #eth4--#hth day ,sabbath1 #a bullock1 #a ram1 #g lambs1 #a goat1 #cf quarts of flour--#ce-ci4 #ag;,and ,moses told the children of ,israel according to all that the ,lord commanded ,moses4 ,here is the #hth day ,sabbath1 which makes #e ,jewish ,sabbaths1 every one of them differing from the other and the ,lord's ,sabbath1 no more connected with them than in the xxiii of ,levit4 just named4 ,here then is an unanswerable argument for a separation of the ,jewish from the ,lord's ,sabbath1 and shows conclusively what ,paul calls shadows in ii ,col3 #ag1 and ,hosea her ,sabbaths4 ,and in the days of ,nehemiah when ,ezra had read the law to the people1 viii 7more than one thousand years after they were promulgated17 they bound themselves under an oath to walk in ,god's law which was given by the hand of ,moses1 the servant of ,god4 ,and to observe and do all the commandments of the ,lord1 our ,lord4 x3 #bi4 ,and that there might be no misunderstanding about the kind of ,sabbaths1 they say1 ,if the people bring ware or any victuals on the ,sabbath day to sell1 that we would not buy it of them on the ,sabbath or on the holy day1 7#ca v47 but they would charge themselves yearly with a third part of a shekel 7to pay for7 the burnt offerings of the ,sabbaths1 of the new moons1 for the set feasts1 c4 7#cc v47 for the house of ,god1 including what has already been set forth in ,leviticus and ,numbers4 ,now as their feast days commenced and ended with a ,sabbath1 so when their feasts ceased to be binding on them these ,sabbaths must also1 and all were nailed to the cross4 ,now ,i ask if there is one particle of proof that the ,sabbath of the ,lord is included in these sabbaths and feast days8--,who then dare join them together or contradict the ,most ,high ,god1 and call ,,his the ,jewish ,sabbath8 ,theirs was nailed to the cross when ,jesus died1 while the ,lord's is an everlasting sign a perpetual covenant4 ,the ,jews1 as a nation1 broke their covenant4 ,jesus and his disciples were one week 7the last of the seventy7 that is seven years1 confirming the new covenant for another people1 the ,gentiles4 ,now ,i ask if this changing the subjects from ,jew to ,gentile made void the commandments and law of ,god1 or in other words1 abolished the fourth commandment8 ,if so1 the other nine are not binding4 ,it cannot be that ,god ever intended to mislead his subjects4 ,let us illustrate this4 ,suppose that the ,congress of these ,united ,states in their present emergency1 should promulgate two separate codes of laws1 one to be perpetual1 and the other temporary1 to be abolished when peace was proclaimed between this country and ,mexico4 ,the time comes1 the temporary laws are #ah;abolished3 but strange to hear1 a large portion of the people are now insisting upon it that because peace is proclaimed that both these codes of laws are forever abolished2 while another class are strenuously insisting that it is only the fourth law in the perpetual code that's now abolished1 with the temporary and all the rest is still binding4 ,opposed to all these is a third class1 headed by the ministers and scribes of the nation1 who are writing and preaching from ,maine to ,florida1 insisting upon it without fear of contradiction1 that when peace was proclaimed this fourth law in the perpetual code was to change its date to another day1 gradually1 7while some of them say immediately7 and thenceforward become perpetual1 and the other code abolished2 and yet not one of these is able to show from the proceedings of ,congress that the least alteration had ever been made in the perpetual code4 ,thus1 to me1 the case stands clear that neither of the laws or ten commandments in the first code1 ever has or ever can be annulled or changed while mortality is stamped on man1 for the very reason that ,god's moral law has no limitation4 ,jesus then brought in a new covenant1 which continued the ,sabbath by writing his law upon their hearts4 ,paul says1 written not with ink1 but with the spirit of the living ,god2 not in tables of stone1 but in fleshy tables of the heart4 #b ,cor4 iii3 #c4 ,and when writing to the ,romans he shows how the ,gentiles are a law unto themselves4 ,he says1 they shew the work of the law written in their hearts1 their consciences always bearing them witness1 and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another1 7when will this be ,paul7 in the day when ,god shall judge the secrets of men by ,jesus ,christ according to my gospel4 ii3 #ae1 #af4 ,how plain that this is all the change4 ,the ,jews by nature had the law given them on tables of stone1 while the ,gentiles had the law of commandments written on their hearts4 ,paul tells the ,ephesians that it was the law of commandments contained in ordinances1 7ii3 #ae7 not on tables that were nailed to the cross4 ,if the ten commandments1 first written by the finger of ,god on stone1 and then at the second covenant on fleshy tables of the heart1 are shadows can any one tell where we shall find the substance8 ,we are answered1 in ,christ4 ,well1 hear ,isaiah4 ,he says1 that he 7,christ7 will magnify the law and make it honorable4 xlii3 #ba4 ,again1 ,i ask1 where was the necessity and of what use were the ten commandments written on our hearts1 if it was not to render perfect obedience to #aithem4 ,if we do not keep the day ,god has sanctified1 then we break not the least1 but one of the greatest of his commandments4 ,before we leave this part of our subject let us examine #b ,cor4 iii3 #g1 #i1 #aa1 #ae4 ,i have been told that these verses clearly prove the abolition of the #aj commandments4 ,it is admitted by all our opponents1 that the change which they so much insist upon1 respecting the commandments1 took place at the crucifixion of our ,lord4 ,it is clear from ii ,col3 #ad that the hand-writing of ordinances 7the law of ,moses7 was then taken out of our way1 and all that was contrary to us1 but the #aj commandments were never contrary to us1 especially the #dth1 the ,sabbath1 for it was made for man4 ,the #b;d or ,gospel ,covenant ,paul tells the ,hebs4 is written upon our hearts4 viii3 #aj4 ,this is the same ten commandments2 then instead of being taken away or abolished they are still nearer to us4 ,see also #c;d v of #b;d ,cor3 iii4 ,if ,paul was laboring here to show the abolition of the ten commandments in ,a4 ,d4 #fj1 7look at the top of your bible for the date7 pray tell me if you can what he meant by writing to the ,romans the very same year and telling them that the law was holy1 and the commandments holy1 just and good4 ,that he meant no other than the ,law and ,commandments in the decalogue1 see xiii3 #h1 #i4 ,about four years after this he is exhorting the ,ephesians to the keeping the #eth commandment4 ,he says it is the first commandment with promise4 vi3 #b4 ,the same year that he writes the ,romans he dates his #ast ,epistle to the ,cor4 in ch4 vii3 #ai1 and says circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing1 7what is1 ,paul87 but the keeping the commandments of ,god4 ,now all this was certainly more than twenty-five years after the crucifixion4 ,is not the proof then positive and forever established that ,paul's preaching is right to the point in establishing the commandments of ,god instead of abolishing them8 ,if ,i have not made it plain here1 ,i would just say once more1 that the ,apostle's argument where he refers to the abolition of the law in ,rom41 ,cor41 ,gall41 see v3 #ad1 ,eph4 and ,heb4 he always means the carnal commandments and laws of ,moses1 and not the commandments of ,god1 as he has shown4 ,see ,acts xxi3 #bj1 #ba4 ,here is circumcision1 and the customs1 the law of ,moses1 and not one breath about the ,sabbath4 ,but if you will trace back to the xviii3 #d1 #aa1 you will see that instead of abolishing ,,the ,sabbath1 ,paul had just come from ,corinth1 where he had been preaching for #gh ,sabbaths in succession4 ,o ,lord help thy people #bjto see ,,these truths and keep thy law6 ,still1 there are many other texts relating to the law1 presented by the opposite view1 to show that the law respecting the ,sabbath is abolished4 ,let us look at some of them4 ,but it will be necessary in the first place1 to make a clear distinction between what is commonly called the ,,moral ,,and ,,ceremonial ,,law4 ,bro4 ,s4 ,s4 ,snow1 in writing on this subject about one year ago1 in the ,jubilee ,standard1 asks by what authority this distinction is made4 ,he says1 neither our ,lord or his apostles made any such distinction4 ,when speaking of the law they never used the terms moral or ceremonial1 but always spake of it as a whole1 calling it the law1 and further says1 we must have a 'thus saith the ,lord' to satisfy us4 ,so ,i say4 ,i have no doubt but thousands have stopped here2 indeed1 it has been to me the most difficult point to settle in this whole question4 ,now let us come to it fairly1 and we shall see that the old and new testament writers have ever kept up the distinction1 although it may in some parts seem to be one code of laws4 ,from the twentieth chapter of ,exodus1 where the law of the ,sabbath was re-enacted1 and onward1 we find two distinct codes of laws4 ,the first was written on two tables of stone with the finger of ,god2 the second was taken down from his mouth and recorded by the hand of ,moses in a book4 ,paul calls the latter carnal commandments and ordinances1 7rites or ceremonies7 which come under two heads1 religious and political1 and are ,moses's4 ,the first code is ,god's4 ,for proof see ,exo4 xvi3 #bh1 #cj4 ,how long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws3 see for that the ,lord hath given you the ,sabbath--and so the people rested on the ,sabbath day4 ,also in the book of ,leviticus where the law of ceremonies is given to the levites or priests1 ,moses closes with these words ,these are the commandments which the ,lord commanded ,moses for the children of ,israel in ,mount ,sinai2 in ,heb4 vii3 #af1 #ah1 called carnal commandments4 ,again1 the ,lord said unto ,moses1 come up to me into the ,mount1 and be there2 and ,i will give thee tables of stone1 and a law1 and commandments which ,i have written4 ,exo4 xxiv3 #ab4 ,further he calls them the ten commandments--xxxiv3 #bh4 ,and ,moses puts them1 into the ark--xl3 #bj4 ,now for the second code of laws4 ,see ,deut4 xxxl3 #i1 #aj2 and xxiv3 #bf4 ,and when ,moses had #ba;finished writing the law1 he commanded them to put this book of the ,,law 7of ceremonies7 in the side of the ark of the covenant to be read at the end of every seven years4--,this is not the song of deliverance by ,moses in the forty-four verses of the thirty-second chapter4 ,for1 eight hundred and sixty-seven years after this1 in the reign of ,josiah1 king of ,israel1 the high priest found this book in the temple1 7#b ,chron4 xxxiv3 #ad1 #ae7 which moved all ,israel4 ,one hundred and seventy-nine years further onward1 ,ezra was from morning till noon reading out of this book4 ,neh4 viii3 #c2 ,heb4 ix3 #ai4 ,paul's comments4 ,bro4 ,snow says in regard to the commandments1 ,the principles of moral conduct embraced in the law1 were binding before the law was given1 7meaning that one of course at ,mount ,sinai7 and are binding now2 it is immutable and eternal6 ,they are comprehended in one word1 ,,love4 ,if he meant1 as we believe he did1 to comprehend what ,jesus did in the xix4 and xxii4 chap4 ,matt4 #cg-dj1 and ,paul1 and ,james1 and ,john after him1 then we ask how it is possible for him to reject from that code of laws1 the only one1 the seventh day rest1 that was promulgated at the beginning1 while at the same time the other nine1 that were not written until about three thousand years afterwards1 were eternally binding2 without doubt1 the whole ten commandments are coeval and coextensive with sin4--,again he says1 ,we readily admit1 that if what is called the decalogue or ten commandments be binding on us1 we ought to observe the seventh day1 for that was appointed by the ,lord as the ,sabbath day4 ,let us see if ,jesus and his apostles do not make it binding4 ,first then1 the distinction of the two codes by ,jesus4 ,the ,pharisees ask the ,saviour why his disciples transgress the tradition of the elders8 ,his answer is1 ,why do ye transgress the commandment of ,god8 and he immediately cites them to the fifth commandment1 ,matt4 xv3 #d4 ,again1 the law and the prophets were until ,john2 since that time the kingdom of ,god is preached1 c4--,luke xvi3 #af4 ,jesus was three years after this introducing the gospel of the kingdom1 unwaveringly holding his meetings on the ,sabbath days1 7which our opponents say were now about to be abolished2 others say changed17 and never uttering a syllable to show to the contrary1 but this was and always would be the holy day for worship4 ,mark says when the ,sabbath 7the ,seventh day1 for there was no other17 was come1 he began to teach in the ,synagogue1 vi3 #bbb4 ,luke says1 as his custom was1 he went into the ,synagogue and taught on the ,sabbath day4 iv3 #af1 #ca4 ,will it be said of him as it is of ,paul on like occasions1 some thirty years afterwards that he uniformly held his meetings on the ,sabbath because he had no where else to preach1 or that this day was the only one in the week in which the people would come out to hear him8 ,every bible reader knows better2 witness the five thousand and the seven thousand1 and the multitude that thronged him in the streets1 in the cities and towns where they listened to him2 besides1 he was now establishing a new dispensation1 while theirs was passing away4 ,then he did not follow any of their customs or rites or ceremonies which he had come to abolish4 ,i have already quoted ,matt4 #e3 #ag1 #ah1 where ,jesus said he had come to fulfil the law1 and immediately begins by showing them that they are not to violate one of the least of the commandments1 and cites them to some--see v3 #ai1 #ba1 #bg1 #cc4 ,again1 he is tauntingly asked which is the great commandment in the law3 ,jesus said unto him1 ,thou shalt love the ,lord thy ,god with all thy heart1 and with all thy soul1 and with all thy mind4 ,this is the first and great commandment4 ,and the second is like unto it1 ,thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself4 ,on these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets4 xxii3 #cf1 #dj4 ,here ,jesus has divided the ten commandments into two parts1 or as it is written on two tables of stone4 ,the first four on the first table treat of those duties which we owe to ,god--the other six refer to those which we owe to man requiring perfect obedience4 ,once more1 ,one came and said unto him1 good master what good thing shall ,i do that ,i may have eternal life8 ,he said1 ,if thou wilt enter into life keep the commandments4 ,then he asked him which4 ,he cited him to the last part of what he called the second1 loving his neighbor as himself4 ,if he had cited him to the first table1 as in the xxii1 quoted above1 he could not have replied all these have ,i kept from my youth up4 ,why8 ,because he would have already been perfect1 for ,jesus in reply to his question1 what he should do to inherit eternal life1 said he must keep the commandments4 ,matt4 xix3 #af-bj4--;,is not the ,sabbath included in these commandments8--,surely it is6 ,then how absurd to believe that ,jesus1 just at the close of his ministry1 should teach that the way1 the only way1 to enter into life1 was to keep the commandments1 #bcone of which was to be abolished in a few months from that time1 without the least intimation from him or his ,father that it was to take place4 ,i say again1 if the ,sabbath is abolished1 we ask those who teach it to cite us to the chapter and verse1 not to the law of rites and ceremonies which are abolished1 for we have already shown that the ,sabbath was instituted more than twenty-five hundred years before ,moses wrote the carnal ordinances or ceremonies4 ,god said1 ,abraham kept my charge1 my commandments1 my statutes1 and my laws4 ,gen4 xxvi3 #e4 ,this must include the ,sabbath1 for the ,sabbath was the first law given1 therefore if ,abraham did not keep the ,sabbath1 ,i cannot understand what commandments1 statutes1 and laws mean in this chapter4 ,jesus says1 ,as ,i have kept my ,father's commandments1 ,john xv3 #aj4 ,did he keep the commandments8 ,yes4 ,mark and ,luke1 before quoted--7but more of this in another place47 ,in ,john vii3 #ai1 ,jesus speaks of ,moses law1 your law1 x3 #cd4 ,again1 their law4 xv3 #be4 ,here then we show that ,jesus kept up a clear distinction between what ,god calls my law and commandments and ,moses law1 their law1 your law4 ,let us now look at the argument of the ,apostles4 ,paul preaching at ,antioch taught the brethren that by ,jesus ,christ all who believe in him are justified from all things from which ye could not be justified by the ,law of ,moses4 ,acts xiii3 #ci4 ,the ,pharisee said that it was needful to circumcise them and commend them to keep the ,law of ,moses4 xv3 #e4 ,again1 when ,paul had come to ,jerusalem the second time1 7fourteen years from the time he met the ,apostles in conference where they established the decrees for the churches4 ,see ,acts xx3 #ai2 ,gal4 ii3 #a17 the ,apostles shewed him how many thousands of ,jews there were which believed and were zealous of the law2 ,and they are informed of thee1 that thou teachest all the ,jews which are among the ,gentiles1 to forsake ,moses and the customs4 xxi3 #bj1 #ba4 ,any person who will carefully read the eight chapters here included1 must be thoroughly convinced that the ,apostle's troubles were about the law of ceremonies written and given by ,moses1 and nothing to do with the ten commandments4 ,for you see a little before he comes to ,jerusalem1 he had been preaching at ,corinth every ,sabbath for eighteen months4 xviii3 #d1 #aa4 ,and this1 be it remembered1 was more than twenty years after the ,jewish ,sabbaths and ceremonies were nailed to the cross4--,and #bdyou see that ,paul was the man above all the ,apostles to be persecuted on account of the abolition of the ,jews' law of ceremonies1 for he was the great apostle to the ,gentiles3 and if the ,sabbath of the ,lord our ,god was to have been abolished when the ,saviour died1 ,paul was the very man selected for that purpose4 ,it is clear1 therefore1 that he did not abolish the seventh day ,sabbath among the ,gentiles4 ,this same ,apostle tells the ,romans that ,christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth4 x3 #d4 ,again1 that sin shall not have dominion over you1 for ye are not under the law but under grace4 vi3 #ad4 ,once more3 ,he says the ,gentiles having not the law1 are a law unto themselves4--,why8 ,because1 he says in the next verse1 it shews the law written on their hearts4 ,the law of ceremonies8 ,no that which was on tables of stone4 ii3 #ad-af4 ,we might quote much more which looks like embracing the whole law4 ,let us now look at a few texts in the same letter1 which will draw a distinguishing line between the two codes of laws4 ,paul1 in the vii ch4 #i-acv1 brings to view the carnal commandment1 and the one unto life1 and sums up his argument in these words3 ,wherefore the law is holy1 and the commandment holy and just and good4 ,in the #gv he quotes from the decalogue4 ,again1 he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law4 ,how8 ,why thou shalt not steal1 nor commit adultery1 nor bear false witness1 nor covet1 thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself4 ,therefore love is the fulfilling of the law4 ,rom4 xiii3 #h1 #aj4--,this then is what the ,saviour taught the young man to do--to secure eternal life4 ,matt4 ,once more1 in concluding a long argument on the law in ,rom4 iii3 #ca he closes with this language3 ,do we then make void the law through faith8 ,god forbid ye1 we establish the law4--,what law is here established8 ,not the law of rites and ceremonies4 ,what then1 for ,paul means some law4 ,it can be no other than what he calls the law of life1 of love1 the ten commandments4 ,how could even that be established twenty-nine years after the crucifixion if one of the greatest commandments had been abolished out of the code1 that is the ,sabbath4 ,paul's letter to the ,corinthians teaches that circumcision is nothing1 and uncircumcision is nothing1 but the keeping of the commandments of ,god4 vii3 #ai4 ,again1 in his epistle to the ,galatians1 his phraseology is somewhat changed1 but the argument is to the same point1 although #besome passages read as though every vestage of law was swept by the board when ,jesus hung upon the cross4 ,for instance1 such as the following3 ,but that no man is justified by the law in the sight of ,god it is evident1 for the just shall live by faith1 and the ,,law is not of faith1 but the man that doeth them shall live by them4 ,christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law1 being made a curse for us4 ,but before faith came we were kept under the law1 shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed4 ,wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto ,christ that we might be justified by faith1 but after that faith has come we are no longer under a schoolmaster4 ,gal4 iii3 #aa-bc1 #bc-be4 ,again3 ,for as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse4 #ajv4 ,now are we to understand from these texts that whosoever continueth in the law is cursed1 and that the law the whole law1 was abolished when ,christ came as our schoolmaster1 he being the end of the law8 ,rom4 x3 #d4 ,if so1 how is it possible for any man1 even ,paul himself1 to be saved4 ,but we do not believe that ,paul taught these brethren any different doctrine than what has already been shown in the ,acts1 ,romans1 and ,corinthians1 and also the ,eph41 ,phil41 ,col41 and ,heb4 ,if he did not mean the law written by the hand of ,moses1 distinguishing it from the law of the ten commandments1 written by the finger of ,god on tables of stone1 then pray tell me if you can1 what he means 7in the closing of this argument17 by saying1 ,for all the ,,law is ,,fulfilled in one word1 even this3 ,thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself4 v3 #ad4 ,surely he is quoting the ,saviour's words in ,matthew xxii3 #ci1 relative to the commandment of the ,lord our ,god4--,to his son ,timothy he says3 ,now the end of the commandment is charity1 7love7 meaning of course the last part of the ten commandments4 ,in vi3 #b1 he says3 ,bear ye one anothers burdens and so fulfil the law of ,christ4 ,does this differ from the law of ,god8 ,yes1 a little1 for it is the new commandment1 7some say the eleventh47 ,see ,john xiii3 #cd4 ,a new commandment ,i give unto you1 7what is it1 ,lord87 that ye love one another4 ,and also xv3 #ab4 ,the other is to love our neighbor as ourself4--,john says3 ,and this commandment have we from him 7,christ17 that he who loveth ,god loveth his brother also4 ,john iv3 #ba1 and ii3 #h-aa4 ,in his letter to the ,ephesians he says3 ,having abolished in his flesh the enmity even the law of commandments contained in #bfordinances4 ii3 #ae4 ,see the reverse in vi3 #b v4 ,to the ,collossians he asks1 ,why as though living in the world1 are ye subject to ordinances which all are to perish with their using8 ,and says3 ,touch not1 taste not1 handle not4 7,does ,paul here teach us to forsake the ordinances of ,god1 instituted by the ,saviour--,baptism and the ,lord's ,supper8 ,yes1 just as clearly as he does to forsake the whole law47 ,when writing to the ,hebrews more than thirty years after the crucifixion1 he calls these ordinances carnal1 imposed on them 7the ,jews7 until ,christ our ,high ,priest should come4 ix3 #aj1 #aa4 ,he also calls the law of commandments carnal too1 and says3 ,for there is verily a disannulling of the commandments going before1 for the law made nothing perfect1 but the bringing in of a better hope did4 vii3 #af1 #ah-ai4 ,for when ,moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law he took the blood of calves and of goats1 with water1 and scarlet wool1 and hyssop1 and sprinkled both the ,,book and all the people4 ix3 #ai4 ,now we see clearly that the book of the law of ,moses1 from which ,paul has been quoting through the whole before mentioned epistles1 is as distinctly separate from the tables of stone 7or fleshly table of the heart17 as they were when deposited in the ,ark thirty-three hundred years ago4 ,therefore we think that here is clear proof that he has kept up the distinction between the handwriting of ordinances 7meaning ,moses' own handwriting in his book17 and the ten commandments writen by the finger of ,god4 ,let us now turn to the ,epistle of ,james1 said to be written more than twenty-five years after the law of ceremonies was nailed to the cross1 and see if he does not teach us distinctly1 that we are bound to keep the commandments given on tables of stone4 ,he says1 the man that shall be a ,,doer of the perfect law of liberty shall be blessed in his deed4 i3 #be4 ,if ye fulfill the royal law according to the scripture1 thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself1 ye do well4 ,why8 ,because the ,saviour in quoting from the commandments1 in answer to the ,ruler1 what he should do to inherit eternal life1 taught the same doctrine4 ,matt4 xix3 #ai4 ,further3 ,for whosoever shall keep the whole law and yet offend in one point1 shall be guilty of all4 ,in the next verse he quotes from the ten commandments again1 namely1 ,adultery and ,murder 7what the ,saviour in the fifth chapter of ,matt4 calls the #bgleast1 that is the smallest commandment17 and says if we commit them we become transgressors of the law4 ,of what law8 ,next verse says the law of liberty by which we are to be judged4 ii3 #h1 #aa4 ,now will it not be admitted by every reasonable person that ,james has included the whole of the ten commandments1 by calling them the perfect law of liberty4 #b;d1 ,the royal law according to the scripture1 and #c;d1 the law of liberty by which we are to be judged4 7,royal relates to imperial and kingly47 ,perfect means ,,complete1 entire1 the ,,whole4 ,then ,i understand ,james thus3 ,this law emenated from the king1 the ,supreme ,ruler of the universe1 and to be perfect must be just what it was when it came from his hand1 and that no change had1 or could take place1 7and remember now1 this is more than twenty-five years since the ceremonies with the ,jewish ,sabbaths were nailed to the cross17 for the very best of reasons1 until the ,judgment1 because he shows we are to be judged by that law4 ,then ,i ask by what parity of reasoning any one can make the law of the ten commandments perfect1 while they at the same time assert that the fourth one is abolished8 and that on no better evidence than calling it the ,jewish ,sabbath4 ,now let us look at the ,apostle ,john's testimony4 ,and hereby we do know that we know him if we keep his commandments4 ,he that saith ,i know him and keepeth not his commandments is a ,,liar1 and the truth is not in him4 ,now no man1 more especially one who professes to abide by the whole truth1 feels entirely easy if he is called a liar4 ,now ,john please explain yourself4--,hear him3 ,brethren1 ,i write no new commandment unto you1 but an old commandment that ye had from the beginning4 ,the old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the ,,beginning4 ,what do you mean by beginning8 ,turn to my gospel1 #ast ch4 ,in the beginning was the word1--the same was in the beginning with ,god4 #a1 #b4 ,see ,gen4 i ch3 ,in the beginning ,god created the heavens and the earth4 ,then you are pointing us to the seventh day of creation1 in which ,god instituted the seventh day ,sabbath of rest1 for the old commandment in the beginning4 ii3 #c4 ,certainly there is no other place to point to4 ,does not ,jesus point to the same place for the beginning when marriage was first instituted4 ,matt4 xix3 #d4 ,in my second letter to the church1 ,i have taught the same doctrines3 viz4 ,this is the commandment that as ye #bh;have heard from the beginnings ye should walk in it4 7practice it47 ii3 #e1 #f4 ,a new commandment ,i write unto you4 ii3 #h v4 ,this is the one that ,jesus gave us on that memorable night in which he was betrayed1 after he had instituted the sacrament and washed our feet4 ,he said ,by this shall all men know that ye are my disciples if ye have love one to another4 xiii3 #cd1 #ce4 ,the first then teaches us1 ,love to ,god2 #b;d1 to ,love our neighbor as ourself2 on these two commandments 7says ,jesus7 hang all the law and the prophets4 ,then we understand this is the essence of the ten commandments1 and if we do not keep the ,sabbath we do not love ,god4 ,jesus says1 ,if ye love me keep my commandments4 ,we are repeatedly told that the ,sabbath was changed or forever abolished1 at the crucifixion of our ,lord2 and it is stated by the most competent authorities that ,john wrote this epistle about sixty years afterwards1 and that about six years after this our blessed ,lord revealed to him the state of the ,church down to the judgment of the great day4 ,in the xiv ch4 ,rev4 #f-aa1 he saw three angels following each other in succession3 first one preaching the everlasting gospel 7second advent doctrine72 #b;d1 announcing the fall of ,babylon2 #c;d1 calling ,god's people out of her by showing the awful destruction that awaited all such as did not obey4 ,he sees the separation and cries out1 ,here is the patience of the ,saints1 here are they that keep the commandments of ,god and the faith of ,jesus4 ,and this picture was so deeply impressed upon his mind1 that when the ,savior said to him ,behold ,i come quickly and my reward is with me1 he seemed to understand this1 saying--,blessed are they that do his commandments1 that they may have right to the tree of life1 and may enter in through the gates into the city4 ,now it seems to me that the seventh day ,sabbath is more clearly included in these commandments1 than thou shalt not steal1 nor kill1 nor commit adultery1 for it is the only one that was written at the creation or in the beginning4 ,he allows no stopping place this side of the gates of the city4 ,then1 if we do not keep that day1 ,john has made out his case1 that we are all liars4 ,we say in every other case the type must be continued until it is superseded by the antetype3 as in the case of the passover1 until our ,lord was crucified4 ,so then1 as ,paul tells us1 there remaineth a keeping of the ,sabbath to the people of ,god2 and that we believe will be in the ,millenium1 the seven thousandth year1 so that the seventh #bi;day ,sabbath and no other will answer for the type1 and those who keep the first or the eighth day ,sabbath cannot consistently look for the antetype of rest or the great ,sabbath1 short of one thousand years in future4 ,again3 ,isaiah says3 ,to the law and to the testimony if they speak not according to his word it is because there is no light in them4 viii3 #bj4 ,now if the ,gentiles are under no law1 as is asserted1 pray tell me what right1 the ,gentiles1 have we to appeal to the law and testimony1 or to this text4 ,in the xxiv4 of ,matt4 our ,saviour says to his disciples in answer to their questions1 when shall these things be8 and what shall be the sign of thy coming and the end of the world8 ,when ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation spoken of by ,daniel the prophet1 stand in the holy place1 c4 #aev4 ,pray ye that your flight be not in the winter1 neither on the ,sabbath day4 #bjv4 ,the first question is1 at what age of the world is this1 where our ,lord recognizes the ,sabbath4 #ast4 ,it is agreed on all hands that this time to which he here refers1 never transpired until the destruction of ,jerusalem in ,a4 ,d4 #gj1 about #dj years after his crucifixion4 #b;d4 ,some others say down to the second ,advent6 ,the first mentioned is safe ground and sufficient for our purpose2 nor need we stop to inquire why our ,lord gave these directions1 it is forever settled that he directed the minds of his followers to ,,the1 not a ,sabbath4 ,keep it in remembrance1 that he told the ,pharisees that he was ,lord1 not of a1 but of ,,the ,sabbath1 meaning that one which of course had already been established4 ,the #b;d question is1 did our ,lord ever trifle with or mislead his disciples8 ,the response is ,no6 ,then it is clear that if he taught them to pray at all1 it must be in faith1 and he of course would hear them and mediate with the ,father to change the day of their flight4 ,i ask what kind of a prayer and with what kind of faith would his disciples have asked to have this day changed1 if1 as we are told1 it was abolished some forty years before1 and they had1 contrary to the will of ,god1 persisted in keeping up the seventh day ,sabbath4 ,any one who has confidence in ,god's word1 knows that such a prayer never would be answered4 ,what if you do say the ,jews always kept that ,sabbath1 and it was the same seventh day ,sabbath that they kept when he was teaching them in their synagogues8 ,i say so too6 and that fact will be presented by and by1 in its place4 ,this does not touch the point4 ,jesus was here1 giving instruction to his #cj;followers1 both ,jew and ,gentile1 respecting the ,sabbath which they would have to do with4 ,it is immaterial what kind of sophistry is presented to overthrow the point1 nothing can touch it short of proving it a mistranslation4 ,jesus did here recognize the perpetuity of the seventh day ,sabbath4 ,and ,john will continue to make all men liars that say they know him1 and refuse the light presented and disregard this commandment4 ,if ,god instituted the ,sabbath in ,paradise and has not abolished it here1 then it must be perpetual4 ,if ,paul's argument in iii4 ,rom4 that the law is established through faith1 is correct1 then it is perpetual4 ,if ,james' royal perfect law of liberty1 which we are to be doers of1 and judged by1 means the commandments1 then is the ,sabbath perpetual4 ,if the ,apostle ,john has made out a clear case by citing us back to the beginning of creation1 and by walking in and doing these commandments1 we shall have right to the tree of life and enter in by the gates into the city2 then it must be perpetual4 ,if the earthly ,sabbath is typical of the heavenly1 then must it be perpetual4 ,if not one jot or one tittle can ever pass from the law1 then must it be perpetual4 ,if the ,saviour1 in answer to the young man who asked him what he should do to inherit eternal life1 gave a safe direction for ,gentiles to follow1 viz3 ,if thou wilt enter into life keep the commandments 7and these included those commandments which his ,father had given17 then1 without contradiction the ,sabbath is perpetual1 and all the arguments which ever can be presented against the fourth commandment being observed before ,god wrote it on tables of stone to prove that it is not binding on ,gentiles1 fall powerless before this one sentence3 ,if thou wilt enter into life1 keep the ,commandments4 ,i say the proof is positive that the ,sabbath was a constituent part of the commandments1 and ,jesus says the ,sabbath was made for man4 ,the ,jews were only a fragment of creation4 ,the principle is settled in all governments that there are but two ways in which any law can cease to be binding upon the people4 ,it may expire by its own limitations1 or it may be repealed by the same authority which enacted it2 and in the latter case the repealing act must be as explicit as that by which the obligation was originally imposed4 ,now we have it in proof that the ,sabbath was instituted in ,paradise1 the first of all laws without any limitation1 and no enactment by ,god to abolish it1 unless what we have already referred to can be considered proof4 ,one more passage which ,i have not alluded to1 will show that #ca;it was not abolished at the crucifixion1 for his disciples kept the ,sabbath while he was resting in his tomb4 ,see ,luke xxiii3 #ee1 #ef4 ,let us now pass to another part of the subject4 ,the third question3 ,,was ,,the ,,seventh ,,day ,,sabbath ,,ever ,,changed8 ,,if ,,so ,,when1 ,,and ,,for ,,what ,,reason8 ,here we come to a question which has more or less engaged the attention of the whole christian world1 and the greater portion of those who believe in a crucified ,saviour say that this change took place1 and is dated from his resurrection4 ,some say subsequently1 while a minority insist upon it that there is no proof for the change4 ,now to obtain the truth and nothing but the truth on this important subject1 ,i propose to present1 or quote from standard authors on both sides of the question1 and try the whole by the standard of divine truth4 #ast4 ,buck's ,theological ,dictionary1 to which no doubt thousands of ministers and laymen appeal to sustain their argument for the change1 says3 ,under the christian dispensation the ,sabbath is altered from the seventh to the first day of the week4 ,the arguments for the change are these3 #ast4 ,the seventh day was observed by the ,jewish church in memory of the rest of ,god2 so the first day of the week has always been observed by the christian church in memory of ,christ's resurrection4 #b;d4 ,christ made repeated visits to his disciples on that day4 #c;d4 ,it is called the ,lord's day4 ,rev4 i3 #aj4--dth4 ,on this day the ,apostles were assembled1 when the ,holy ,ghost came down upon them to qualify them for the conversion of the world4 #eth4 ,on this day we find ,paul at ,troas when the disciples came together to break bread4 #fth4 ,the directions the ,apostles gave to ,christians plainly alludes to their assembling on that day4 #gth4 ,pliny bears witness of the first day of the week being kept as a festival in honor of the resurrection of ,christ4 ,numerous have been the days appointed by man for religious services1 but these are not binding because of human institution4 ,not so the ,sabbath4 ,it is of divine institution1 so it is to be kept holy onto the ,lord4 ,doct4 ,dodridge1 whose ability and piety have seldom or rarely been disputed1 comments on some of the above articles thus3 7,commentary p4 #fjf47 ,upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store as ,god hath prospered him1 that there be no gatherings when ,i come4 ,i ,cor4 xvi3 #b4 ,show that it was to be put into a #cb;common stock4 ,the argument drawn from hence for the religious observance of the first day of the week in these primitive churches of ,corinth and ,galacia is too obvious to need any further illustration1 and yet too important to be passed by in entire silence4 ,again1 p4 #ijd1 ,i was in the spirit on the ,lord's day1 c4 ,rev4 i3 #aj4 ,it is so very unnatural and contrary to the use of the word in all other authors to interpret this of the ,jewish ,sabbath1 as ,mr4 ,baxter justly argues at large1 that ,i cannot but conclude with him and the generality of ,christian writers on this subject1 that this text strongly infers the extraordinary regard paid to the first day of the week in the ,apostle's time as a day solemnly consecrated to ,christ in the memory of his resurrection from the dead4 ,there is much more1 but these are his strong arguments4 ,i shall quote some more from the ,commentaries by and by4 ,i wish to place by the side of these arguments one from the ,british ,quarterly ,theological ,review and ,ecclesiastical ,recorder1 of ,jan4 #ahcj1 which ,i extract from 'the ,institution of the ,sabbath day1' by ,wm4 ,logan ,fisher1 of ,philadelphia1 a book in which there is much valuable information on this subject1 though ,i disagree with the writer1 because his whole labor is to abolish the ,sabbath2 yet he gives much light on this subject1 from which ,i take the liberty to make some quotations4 ,but to the ,quarterly ,review of #ahcj3 ,it is said that the observance of the seventh day ,sabbath is transferred in the ,christian ,church to the first day of the week4 ,we ask by what authority1 and are very much mistaken if an examination of all the texts of the ,new ,testament1 in which the first day of the week or ,lord's day is mentioned1 does not prove that there is no divine or ,apostolic precept enjoining its observance1 nor any certain evidence from scripture that it was1 in fact1 so observed in the times of the ,apostles4 ,accordingly we search the scriptures in vain1 either for an ,apostolic precept1 appointing the first day of the week to be observed in the place of the ,jewish ,sabbath1 or for any unequivocal proof that the first christians so observed it--there are only three or1 at most four passages of scripture1 in which the first day of the week is mentioned4 ,the next passage is ,acts xx3 #g4 ',upon the first day of the week when the disciples some together to break bread1 ,paul preached unto them4' ,all that ,st4 ,luke here tells us plainly is1 that on a particular occasion the christians of ,troas met together on the first day of the week to celebrate the ,eucharist and to hear ,paul preach4 ,this is the only place in scripture in which the first day of the week is in any way connected with any acts of public worship1 and he who would certainly infer from this ,,solitary ,,instance that the first day of every week was consecrated by the ,apostles to religious purposes1 must be far gone in the art of drawing universal conclusion from particular premises4 ,on page #agh1 ,mr4 ,fisher says3 #cc;,i have examined several different translations of the scriptures1 both from the ,hebrew and ,septuagint1 with notes and annotations more extensive than the texts2 have traced as far as my leisure would permit1 various ecclesiastical histories1 some of them voluminous and of ancient date2 have paid considerable attention to the writings of the earliest authors in the ,christian era1 and to rare works1 old and of difficult access1 which treat upon this subject2 ,i have read with care many of the publications of sectarians to sustain the institution2 ,i have omitted nothing within my reach1 and ,i have found not one shred of argument1 or authority of any kind1 that may not be deemed of partial and sectarian character1 to support the institution of the first day of the week1 as a day of peculiar holiness4 ,but1 in place of argument1 ,i have found opinions without number--volumes filled with idle words that have no truth in them4 ,in the want of texts of ,scripture1 ,i have found perversions2 in the want of truth1 false statements4 ,i have seen it stated that ,justin ,marter in his ,apology speaks of ,sunday as a holy day2 that ,eusebius1 bishop of ,cesarea1 who lived in the fourth century1 establishes the fact of the transfer of the ,,seventh to the first day1 by ,christ himself4 ,these things are ,,not ,,true4 ,these authors say no such thing4 ,i have seen other early authors referred to as establishing the same point1 but they are equally false4 ,here then is the testimony of four authors1 two for the change and two against it1 from the old and new world4 ,no truth seeking1 unbiassed mind can hesitate for a moment on which side to decide1 after comparing them with the inspired word4 ,doctor ,,jenks of ,boston1 author of the ,comprehensive ,commentary1 7purporting to comprehend all other commentators on the bible17 after quoting author after author on this subject1 ventures forth with his unsupported opinion in these words3 ,here is a ,christian ,sabbath observed by the disciples and owned by our ,lord4 ,the visit ,christ made to his disciples was on the first day of the week1 and the first day of the week is the only day of the week or month or year ever mentioned by numbers in all the ,new ,testament1 and that is several times spoken of as a day religiously observed4 ,where8 ,echo answers1 where6 ,,heman ,,humphrey1 ,president of ,amherst ,college1 from whose book ,i have already made some quotations1 after devoting some thirty-four pages to the establishment and perpetuation of the seventh day ,sabbath1 comes to his fourth question1 viz3 ,has the day been changed8 ,singular as this question may appear by the side of what he had already written to establish and perpetuate the seventh day ,sabbath from the seventh day of creation down to the resurrection of the just1 but as every man feels that it is his privilege to justify and explain1 when precept and practice do not agree--so is it with ,president ,humphrey1 he can #cdnow shape the scriptures to suit every one that has followed in the wake of ,pope ,gregory for #abbe years4 ,he says1 ,the fourth commandment is so expressed as to admit of a change in the day1--thus striking vitally every argument he had before presented4 ,hear him--he says the seventh day is the ,sabbath2 it was so at that time 7in the beginning7 and for many ages after1 but it is not said that it always shall be--it is the ,sabbath day which we are to remember2 and so at the close1 it was the ,sabbath which was hallowed and blessed and not the seventh day4 ,the ,sabbath then1 the holy rest itself1 is one thing4 ,the day on which we are to rest is another4 ,i ask1 in the name of common sense1 how we should know how or when to keep the ,sabbath1 if it did not matter which day4 ,if the ,president could not see the sanctification of the seventh day in the decalogue1 what did he mean by quoting ,gen4 ii3 #c1 so often1 where it says ,god blessed the seventh day and sanctified it4 ,again1 he says1 ,redemption is a greater work than creation1 hence the change4 ,fifthly1 ,god early consecrated the ,christian ,sabbath by a most remarkable outpouring of his spirit at the day of ,pentecost4 ,and that ,jesus has left us his own example by not saying a syllable after his resurrection about keeping the ,jewish ,sabbath4 ,he also quotes the four passages about ,jesus and his disciples keeping the first day of the week4 ,here1 he says1 the inference to our mind is irresistible--for keeping the first day of the week instead of the seventh4 ,and further says1 it might be proved by innumerable quotations from the writings of the ,apostolic ,fathers1 c4 ,all this may be very true in itself1 but it all falls to the ground for the want of one single precept from the bible4 ,if ,redemption1 because it was greater than ,creation1 and the remarkable display of ,god's power at the ,pentecost1 and ,christ never saying any thing about the ,jewish ,sabbath after his resurrection are such strong proofs that the perpetual seventh day ,sabbath was changed to the first day at that time1 and must be believed because learned men say so1 what shall we do with the sixth day1 on which our blessed ,saviour expired on the cross2 darkness for three hours had covered the earth1 and the vail of the ,temple was rent from top to bottom1 and there was such an earthquake throughout vast creation that we have only to open our eyes and look at the rent rocks for a clear and perfect demonstration that this whole globe was shaken from centre to circumference1 #ce;and the graves of the dead were opened4 ,matt xxvii3 #ej1 #ec4 ,you may answer me that ,popery has honored that day by calling it good ,friday1 and the next first day following ,easter ,sunday1 c41 but after all nothing short of bible argument will satisfy the earnest inquirer after truth4--,the ,president had already shown that the ,jewish ,sabbath was abolished at ,christ's death4 ,what reason1 then had he to believe that the ,saviour would speak of it afterwards4--,so also the ,pentecost had been a type from the giving the law at ,sinai to be kept annually for about #aejj years1 consequently it would be solemnized on every day of the week at each revolving year1 as is the case with the #dth of ,july3 three years ago it was on the fourth day and now it comes on the seventh day of the week4 ,further1 see ,peter standing amidst the amazed multitude1 giving the scripture reason for this miraculous display of ,god's power4 ,he does not give the most distant hint that this was1 or was to be1 the day of the week for worship1 or the true ,sabbath1 neither do any of the ,apostles1 then1 or afterwards1 for when they kept this day the next year1 it must have been the second day of the week4 ,we must have better evidence than what has been adduced1 to believe this was the ,sabbath1 for according to the type1 seven ,sabbaths were to be complete1 7and there was no other way given them to come to the right day17 from the day they kept the first or from the resurrection4 ,here then is proof positive that the ,sabbath in this year was the day before the ,pentecost4 ,see ,luke xxiii3 #ee1 #ef4 ,if ,president ,h4 is right1 then was there two ,sabbaths to be kept in succession in one week4 ,where is the precept8 ,no where6 ,well1 says the inquirer1 ,i want to see the bible proof for this ,christian ,sabbath observed by the disciples1 and owned by our ,lord4 ,w4 ,jenks4 ,here it will be necessary for us to understand1 first how ,god has computed time4 ,in ,gen4 i4 we read1 ,and ,god said let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven1 to divide the day from the night1 and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years4 #ad v4 #af v4 says the greater light to rule the day1--from sunrise to sunset4 ,now there are many modes invented for computing time4 ,we say our day begins at #ab o'clock at night2 seamen begin theirs twelve hours sooner1 at noon2 the ,jews commence their days at #f o'clock in the evening1 between the two extremes4 ,are we all right8 ,no6 ,who shall settle this question8 ,god6 ,very well3 ,he called the light day and the darkness he called night1 and the evening and the #cfmorning were the first day4 ,gen4 i3 #e4 ,then the twenty-four hour day commenced at #f o'clock in the evening4 ,how is that1 says one8 ,because you cannot regulate the day and night to have what the ,saviour calls twelve hours in a day1 without establishing the time from the centre of the earth1 the equator1 where1 at the beginning of the sacred year1 the sun rises and sets at #f o'clock4 ,at this time1 while the sun is at the summer solstice1 the inhabitants at the north pole have no night1 while at this same time at the south it is about all night1 therefore the inhabitants of the earth have no other right time to commence their twenty-four hour day1 than beginning at #f o'clock in the evening4 ,god said to ,moses from even to even1 shall you celebrate your ,sabbath4 ,then of course the next day must begin where the ,sabbath ended4 ,history shows that the ,jews obeyed and commenced their days at #f o'clock in the evening4 ,now then we will try to investigate the main argument by which these authors1 and thousands of others say the ,sabbath was changed4 ,the first is in ,john xx3 #ai1 ,then the same day at evening1 being the first day of the week when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the ,jews 7mark it7 came ,jesus and stood in their midst1 and said peace be unto you4 ,here we understand this to be the same day of the resurrection4 ,on that day he travelled with the two disciples to ,emans1 sixty furlongs 7#g-a_/b miles17 and they constrained him to abide with them1 for it was towards evening and the day was far spent4 ,luke xxiv3 #bi4 ,after this the disciples travelled #g-a_/b miles back to ,jerusalem1 and soon after they found the disciples1 the ,saviour1 as above stated1 was in their midst4 ,now it cannot be disputed but what this was the evening after the resurrection1 for ,jesus rose in the morning1 some ten or eleven hours after the first day had commenced4 ,then the evening of the first day was passing away1 and therefore the evening brought to view in the text was the close of the first day or the commencing of the second4 ,mc,knight's translation says1 in the evening of that day4 ,purver's translation says1 the evening of that day on the first after the ,sabbath4 ,further1 wherever the phrase first day of the week1 occurs in the ,new ,testament1 the word day is in italics1 showing that it is not the original1 but supplied by translators4 ,again1 it is asserted that ,jesus met with his disciples the next first day4 ,see #bf v3 ,and after eight days again his disciples were within1 and ,thomas with them1 then came ,jesus1 the doors being shut1 and stood in the midst1 and said peace be unto you4 #cg;,dr4 ,adam ,clark in referring to this #bfv1 says3 ,it seems likely that this was precisely on that day se'night on which ,christ had appeared to them before2 and from this we may learn that this was the weekly meeting of the ,apostles4 ,now it appears to me that a little child1 with the simple rules of addition and subtraction1 could have refuted this man4 ,i feel astonished that men who profess to be ambassadors for ,god do not expose such downright perversions of scripture1 but it may look clear to those who want to have it so4 ,not many months since1 in conversation with the ,second ,advent lecturer in ,new ,bedford1 ,i brought up this subject4 ,he told me ,i did not understand it4 ,see here1 says he1 ,i can make it plain1 counting his fingers thus3 ,sunday1 ,monday1 ,tuesday1 ,wednesday1 ,thursday1 ,friday1 ,saturday1 ,sunday--does'nt that make eight days after8 and because ,i would not concede1 he parted from me as one that was obstinate and self-willed4 ,afterwards musing on the subject1 ,i said1 this must be the way then to understand it3 ,count ,sunday ,twice4 ,if any of them were to be paid for eight days labor1 they would detect the error in a moment if their employer should attempt to put the first and last days together1 and offer them pay but for seven4 ,eight days after the evening of the first day would stand thus3 ,the second day of the week would certainly be the first of the eight4 ,then to count eight days of twenty-four hours after1 we must begin at the close of the evening of the first1 and count to the close of the evening of the second day2 to where the ,jews 7by ,god's command7 commenced their third day4 ,but suppose we calculate it by our mode of keeping time4 ,our ,lord appears to his disciples the first time at the close of ,sunday evening4 ,now count eight days after1 7with your fingers or anything else17 and it will bring you to ,monday evening4 ,now ,i ask if this looks like ,sunday1 the first day of the week8 ,father ,miller also gives his reasons for the change1 in his lecture on the great ,sabbath3 ,one is ,christ's resurrection and his often meeting with his disciples afterwards on that day4 ,this1 with the example of the ,apostles1 is strong evidence that the proper creation ,sabbath to man1 came on the first day of the week4 ,his proof is this3 ,adam must have rested on the first day of his life1 and thus you will see that to ,adam it was the first day of the week1 for it would not be reasonable to suppose that ,adam began to reckon time before he was created4 ,he certainly could not be able to work six days before the first ,sabbath4 ,and thus #chwith the second ,adam2 the first day of the week he arose and lived4 ,and we find by the bible and by history1 that the first day of the week was ever afterwards observed as a day of worship4 ,now ,i say there is no more truth in these assertions1 than there is in those ,i have already quoted4 ,there is not one passage in the bible to show that ,christ met with his disciples on the first day of the week after the day of his resurrection1 nor that the first day of the week was ever afterwards observed as a day of worship2 save only in one instance1 and that shall be noticed in its place4 ,and it seems to me if ,adam could not reckon time only from his creation then by the same rule no other man could reckon time before his birth1 and by this showing ,christ could not reckon his time until after his resurrection4 ,it is painful to me to expose the errors of one whom ,i have so long venerated1 and still love for the flood of light he has given the world in respect to the ,second ,advent of our ,saviour2 but ,god's word must be vindicated if we have to cut off a right arm1 there is nothing true but truth6 ,i pray ,god to forgive him in joining the great multitude of ,advent believers1 to sound the retreat back beyond the tarrying time1 just when the virgins had gained a glorious victory over the world1 the flesh1 and the devil6 ,go back from this to the slumbering quarters now2 nothing but treachery to our ,master's cause ever dictated such a course6 ,i never can be made to believe that our glorious ,commander designed that we should leave our sacrifices smoking on the altar of ,god1 in the midst of the enemies' land1 but rather that we should be pushing onward from victory to victory1 until we are established in the ,capital of ,his kingdom4 ,would it have been expedient or a mark of courage in ,general ,taylor1 after he had conquered the ,mexican army on the #ith ,may last1 to have retreated back to the capital of the ,u4 ,states1 to place himself and army on the broad platform of liberty1 and commence to travel the ground over again for the purposes of pursuing and overcoming his vanquished foe8 ,no6 ,every person of common sense knows that such a course would have overwhelmed him and all his followers with unutterable disgrace1 no matter how unrighteous the contest4 ,not so with this1 for our cause is one of the most glorious1 tho it be the most trying that the sun ever shown upon since ,god placed it in the heavens4 ,onward and victory1 then1 are our watchwords1 and no retreating back to1 or beyond the cry at ,midnight6 ,but to the subject4 ,did our ,saviour ever meet with his disciples on the first day of the week after the #ci;evening of the day of his resurrection8 ,the xxi4 ch4 ,john says they went a fishing1 and while there ,jesus appeared unto them4 ,in the #adth v4 he says1 ,this is now the third time that ,jesus showed himself to the disciples after that he was risen from the dead4 ,now turn to #a ,cor4 xv3 #d-g3 ,paul's testimony is1 that he was seen of ,cephas1 then of the twelve1 after that of above five hundred brethren at once1 and then of ,james1 then of all the ,apostles4 ,these are all that are specified1 up to his going into heaven4 ,now pray tell me if you can1 where these men got their information respecting the frequent meetings on the first day of the week4 ,the bible says no such thing4 ,but let us pursue the subject and look at the third text1 ,upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store1 as ,god has prospered him1 that there be no gatherings when ,i come4 ,now please turn back to ,dr4 ,dodridge's authority1 he says the argument is too obvious to need illustration1 that the money was put into common stock1 and that this was the religious observance of the first day of the week4 ,now whoever will read the first six verses of this chapter1 and compare them with ,rom4 xv3 #bf-cc1 will see that ,paul's design was to collect some money for the poor saints at ,jerusalem1 and their laying it by them in store until he came that way2 for it plainly implies that they were at home1 for no one could understand that you had money lying by you in store1 if it was in common stock or in other hands4 ,again1 see ,acts xviii3 #d1 #aa4 ,paul preaching every ,sabbath day1 at this very time1 for eighteen months1 to these very same ,corinthians1 bids them farewell1 to go up to the feast at ,jerusalem4 #ba v4 ,by reading to xxi4 ch4 #ag v4 you have his history until he arrives there4 ,now ,i ask1 if ,dr4 ,dodridge's clear illustration can or will be relied on1 when ,luke clearly teaches that ,paul's manner was1 and that he did always preach to them on the ,sabbath1 which1 of course1 was the ,seventh day1 and not the first day of the week4 ,fourth text1 ,john says3 ,i was in the spirit on the ,lord's day4 ,here ,dr4 ,d4 concludes with the generality of christian writers on this subject that this strongly infers the extraordinary regard paid to the first day of the week1 as solemnly consecrated in ,christ1 c4 ,if the scripture any where called this the ,lord's day1 there might be some reason to believe their statements1 but the seventh day ,sabbath is called the ,lord's day4 ,see ,exod4 xx3 #aj4 ,mr4 ,fisher1 in speaking of the late ,harrisburg convention of #ahdd-de1 says1 ,the most spirited debate that occurred #dj;at the assembly was to fix a proper name for the first day of the week1 whether it should be called ,sabbath1 the ,christian ,sabbath or ,lord's day4 ,the reason for this dispute was1 that there was no authority for calling the first day of the week by either one of these names4 ,to pretend that that command was fixed and unchangeable1 and yet to alter it to please the fancy of man1 is in itself ridiculous4 ,it is hardly possible in the nature of man1 that a class of society should be receiving pay for their services and not be influenced thereby2--in the nature of things they will avoid such doctrines as are repugnant to them that give them bread4 ,now we come to the fifth and last1 and only one spoken of in all the ,new ,testament1 for a meeting on the first day of the week4 ,luke says1 ,upon the first day of the week when the disciples came together to break bread1 ,paul preached unto them1 ready to depart on the morrow3 and continued his speech until midnight4 ,acts xx3 #g4 ,now by following the scripture mode of computing time1 from #f o'clock in the evening to #f o'clock in the morning1 as has been shown1 ,paul to commence on the beginning of the first day would begin on what we call ,saturday evening at #f o'clock1 and preach till midnight4 ,after that he restores to life the young man1 then breaks bread and talked till the break of day1 which would be ,sunday morning4 ,then he commenced his journey for ,jerusalem and travelled and sailed all day ,sunday1 the first day of the week1 and two other days in succession4 xx3 #aa-ae4 ,now it seems to me1 if ,paul did teach or keep the first day of the week for the ,sabbath or a holy day he violated the sanctity of it to all intents and purposes1 without giving one single reason for it2 all the proof presented here is a night meeting4 ,please see the quotation from the ,british ,quarterly ,review4 ,but let us look at it the way in which we compute time3 ,i think it will be fair to premise1 that about midnight was the middle of ,paul's meeting2 at any rate there is but one midnight to a twenty-four hour day4 ,we say that ,sunday1 the first day of the week1 does not commence until #ab o'clock ,saturday night4 ,then it is very clear1 if he is preaching on the first day till midnight1 according to our reckoning it must be on ,sunday night1 and his celebrating the ,lord's supper after midnight would make it that he broke bread on ,monday1 the second day1 and that the day time on ,sunday is not included1 unless he had continued his speech through the day till midnight4 ,now the text says that on the first day of the week they came together to break bread4 ,to prove that #dathey did break bread on that day1 we must take the mode in which the ,jews computed time1 and allow the first day of the week to begin at #f o'clock on ,saturday evening1 and to follow ,paul's example1 pay no regard to the first day1 after daylight1 but to travel1 c4 ,if our mode of time is taken1 they broke bread on the second day1 and that would destroy the meaning of the text4 ,here then1 in this text1 is the only argument that can be adduced in the scriptures of divine truth1 for a change of the perpetual seventh day ,sabbath of the ,lord our ,god to the first day of the week4 ,now ,i'll venture the assertion1 that there is no law or commandment recorded in the bible1 that ,god has held so sacred among men1 as the keeping of his ,sabbath4 ,where then1 ,i ask1 is the living man that dare stand before ,god and declare that here is the change for the church of ,god to keep the first instead of the seventh day of the week for the ,sabbath4 ,if it could be proved that ,paul preached here all of the first day1 the only inference that could be drawn1 would be1 to break bread on that day6 ,there is one more point worthy of our attention1 that is1 the teaching and example of ,jesus4 ,i have been told by one that is looked up to as a strong believer in the second coming of the ,lord this fall1 that ,jesus broke the ,sabbath4 ,jesus says1 ,i have kept my ,father's commandments4 ,it is said that he broke the ,sabbath1 because he allowed his disciples to pluck the corn and eat it on that day1 and the ,pharisees condemned them4 ,he says1 ,if ye had known what this meaneth1 ,i will have mercy and not sacrifice1 ye would not have condemned the guiltless4 ,then they were not guilty4 ,see ,deut4 xxiii3 #be4 ,he immediately cites them to ,david and his men1 shewing that it was lawful and right when hungry1 even to eat the shoe bread that belonged only to the priests1 and told them that he was ,lord of the ,sabbath day4 ,here he shows too1 that he was with his disciples passing to the synagogue to teach2 they ask him if it is lawful to teach on the ,sabbath day4 ,he asks them if they had a sheep fall into the ditch on the ,sabbath1 if they would not haul him out8 ,how much better then is a man than a sheep8 ,wherefore it is lawful to do well on the ,sabbath days2 and immediately healed the man with the withered hand4 ,matt4 xii3 #a-ac4 ,on another ,sabbath day1 while he was teaching1 he healed a woman that had been bound of satan eighteen years2 and when the ruler of the synagogue began to find fault1 he called him a hypocrite1 and said doth not each one of you on the ,sabbath #db;day loose his ox or his ass from the stall and lead him away to watering2 and all his adversaries were ashamed4 ,luke xiii3 #aj-ag4 ,the xiv4 chapter of ,luke is quoted to prove that he broke the ,sabbath because he went into the ,pharisee's house with many others on the ,sabbath day to eat bread4 ,here he saw a man with the dropsy and he asked them if it was lawful to heal on the ,sabbath day4 ',and they held their peace1 and he took him and healed him1' and asked them 'which of them having an ox or an ass fall into the pit1 would not straightway pull him out on the ,sabbath day2 and they could not answer him again4' #a-f v4 ,and 'he continued to teach them1 by showing them when they made a feast to call the poor1 the maimed1 the lame1 the blind1 and then they should be blessed4' ,read the chapter1 and you will readily see that he took this occasion1 as the most befitting1 to teach them by parables1 what their duty was at weddings and feasts1 in the same manner as he taught them in their synagogues4 ,there is still another passage1 and ,i believe the only one1 to which reference has been made1 7except where he opened the eyes of a man that was born blind17 for proof that he broke the ,sabbath4 ,it is recorded in ,john v3 #e-ag4 ,here ,jesus found a man that had been sick thirty-eight years1 by the pool of ,bethesda1 'he saith unto him rise1 take up thy bed and walk1--therefore did they persecute ,jesus and sought to slay him because he had done these things on the ,sabbath day4' #afv4 ',but ,jesus answered them1 my ,father worketh hitherto and ,i work4' ,if they did not work every hour and moment of time1 it would be impossible for man to exist3 ,here undoubtedly he had reference to these and other acts of necessity and mercy2 but the great sin for which professors in this enlightened age charge the ,saviour with in this transaction1 is1 in directing the man to take up his bed1 contrary to law4 ,it is clear the people were forbidden to carry burthens on the ,sabbath day1 as in ,jer4 xvii3 #ba1 #bb1 but by reading the #bdth v4 in connection with ,neh4 xiii3 #ae-bb1 we learn that this prohibition related to what was lawful for them to do on the other six days of the week1 viz4 merchandise and trading4 ,see proof1 ,neh4 x3 #ca2 also unlawful1 as in ,amos viii3 #e4 ,we need not nor we cannot misunderstand the fourth commandment taken in connection with the other nine2 they were simple and pure written by the finger of ,god2 but in the days of our ,saviour it had become heavily laden with ,jewish traditions1 hence when ,jesus appeals to them whether it is #dclawful to do good and to heal on the ,sabbath days1 their mouths are closed because they cannot contradict him from the law nor the prophets4 ,the ,saviour no where interferes with them in their most rigid observance of the day2 but when they find fault with him for performing his miracles of mercy on that day1 he tells them they have broken the law2 and in another place1 ,if a man on the ,sabbath day receive circumcision without breaking the law of ,moses1 are ye angry at me because ,i have made a man every whit whole on the ,sabbath day8 ,he then says1 ,judge not according to the appearance1 but judge righteous judgment4 vii3 #bc1 #bd4 ,did he break the ,sabbath8 ,now the law requires that the beasts shall rest2 but what is the practice of many of those who are the most strict in keeping ,sunday for the ,sabbath4 ,sick1 or well1 ministers or laymen1 do they not ride back and forth to meeting8 ,again1 is it right and lawful to carry forth our dead on the ,sabbath8 or carry the communion service back and forth4 ,the ,apostle says1 'believe and be baptized4' ,suppose this should be on the ,sabbath and we were some distance from the water1 would any one interfere with us if we carried our change of apparel with us and back again1 or have we in so doing transgressed the law2 if we have1 it is high time we made a full stop4 ,jesus undoubtedly had good reasons for directing the sick man to take up his bed and walk1 but ,i cannot learn that he justified any one else in carrying their bed on the ,sabbath1 unless in a case of necessity and mercy1 such as he cited them to1 as watering their cattle1 and pulling them out of the ditch1 and eating when hungry1 and being healed when sick4 ,be it also remembered that when the ,sanhedrim tried him they did not condemn him1 as in the other cases cited2 so in this1 they failed for want of scripture testimony4 ,he was the ,lord of the ,sabbath1 and the law of ceremonies were now about to cease forever1 the ten commandments with the keeping of the ,sabbath therefore were to be stripped of these ceremonies and all of their traditions1 and left as pure to be written on the hearts of the ,gentiles as when first written on tables of stone1 therefore ,jesus taught that it was right to do good on the ,sabbath day1 and whoever follows his example and teaching will keep the seventh day ,sabbath holy and acceptable to ,god4 ,they will also judge righteous judgment1 and not according to appearance4 ,there is but one ,christian ,sabbath named1 or established in the bible1 and that individual1 whoever he is1 that #ddundertakes to abolish or change it1 is the real ,sabbath breaker4 ,remember that the keeping the commandments is the only safe guide through the gates into the city4 ,my friends and neighbors1 and especially my family1 know that ,i have for more than twenty years1 strictly endeavored to keep the first day of the week for the ,sabbath1 and ,i can say that ,i did it in all good conscience before ,god1 on the ocean1 and in foreign countries as well as my own1 until about sixteen months since ,i read an article published in the ,hope of ,israel1 by a worthy brother1 ,t4 ,m4 ,preble1 of ,nashua1 which when ,i read and compared with the bible1 convinced me that there never had been any change4 ,therefore the seventh day was the ,sabbath1 and ,god required me as well as him to keep it holy4 ,many things now troubled my mind as to how ,i could make this great change1 family1 friends1 and brethren2 but this one passage of scripture was1 and always will be as clear as a sunbeam4 ,what is that to thee3 follow thou me4 ,in a few days my mind was made up to begin to keep the fourth commandment1 and ,i bless ,god for the clear light he has shed upon my mind in answer to prayer and a thorough examination of the scriptures on this great subject4 ,contrary views did1 after a little1 shake my position some1 but ,i feel now that there is no argument nor sophistry that can becloud my mind again this side of the gates of the ,holy ,city4 ,brother ,marsh1 who no doubt thinks1 and perhaps thousands besides1 that his paper is what it purports to be1 ,,the ,,voice ,,of ,,truth1 takes the ground with the infidel that there is no ,sabbath4 ,brother ,s4 ,s4 ,snow1 of ,new ,york1 late editor of the ,jubilee ,standard1 publishes to the world that he is the ,elijah1 preceding the advent of our ,saviour1 restoring all things3 7the seventh day ,sabbath must be one of the all things17 and yet he takes the same ground with ,br4 ,marsh1 that the ,sabbath is forever abolished4 ,as the seventh day ,sabbath is a real prophecy1 a picture 7and not a shadow like the ,jewish ,sabbaths17 of the thing typified which is to come1 ,i cannot see how those who believe in the change or abolition of the type1 can have any confidence to look to ,god for the great antetype1 the ,sabbath of rest1 to come to them4 ,brother ,j4 ,b4 ,cook has written a short piece in his excellent paper1 the ,,advent ,,testimony4 ,it was pointed and good1 but too short2 and as brother ,preble's ,tract now before me1 did not embrace the arguments which have been presented since he published it1 it appeared #deto me that something was called for in this time of falling back from this great subject4 ,i therefore present this book1 hoping at least1 that it will help to strengthen and save all honest souls seeking after truth4 ,a ,,word ,,respecting ,,the ,,history4 ,at the close of the first century a controversy arose1 whether both days should be kept or only one1 which continued until the reign of ,constantine the ,great4 ,by his laws1 made in ,a4 ,d4 #cba1 it was decreed for the future that ,sunday should be kept a day of rest in all the cities and towns2 but he allowed the country people to follow husbandry4 ,history further informs us that ,constantine murdered his two sisters husbands and son1 and his own familiar friend1 that same year1 and the year before boiled his wife in a cauldron of oil4--,the controversy still continued down to ,a4 ,d4 #fjc1 when ,pope ,gregory passed a law abolishing the seventh day ,sabbath1 and establishing the first day of the week4 ,see ,baronius ,councils1 #fjc4 ,barnfield's ,eng4 page #aaf1 states that the ,parliament of ,england met on ,sundays till the time of ,richard ,,ii4 ,the first law of ,england made for keeping of ,sunday1 was in the time of ,edward ,,iv4 about #adgj4 ,as these two books are not within my reach1 ,i have extracted from ,t4 ,m4 ,preble's tract on the ,sabbath4 ,mr4 ,fisher says1 it was ,dr4 ,bound one of the rigid puritans1 who applied the name ,sabbath to the first day of the week1 about the year #agie4 ,the word ,sunday is not found in the bible1 it derived its name from the heathen nations of the ,north1 because the day was dedicated to the sun4 ,neither is the ,sabbath applied to the first day any more than it is to the sixth day of the week4 ,while ,daniel beheld the little horn1 7popery7 he said1 among other things1 he would think to change times and laws4 ,now this could not mean of men1 because it has ever been the prerogative of absolute rulers like himself1 to change manmade laws1 nor the law of ,moses1 for that had been abolished #egj years before the ,pope finally changed the ,sabbath to the #ast day of the week4 ,then to make the prophecy harmonize with the scripture1 he must have meant times and laws established by ,god1 because he might think and pass decrees as he has done1 but he1 nor all the universe could ever change ,god's times and laws4 ,jesus says that times and seasons were in the power of the father4 ,the ,sabbath is the most important law which ,god ever instituted4 ,how long refuse ye to keep my commandments1 and my laws1 see for that the ,lord hath given you #dfthe ,sabbath4 ,exod4 xvi3 #bh1 #bi4 ,then it's clear from the history1 that this is in part what ,daniel meant4 ,now the second advent believers have professed all confidence in his visions2 why then doubt this4 ,whoever feels disposed to defend and sustain the decrees of that blasphemous dower1 and especially ,pope ,gregory and the great ,constantine1 the murderer1 shown to be the moral reformer in this work of changing the ,sabbath1 are welcome to their principles and feelings4 ,i detest these acts1 in common with all others which have emanated from these ten and one horned powers4 ,the ,revelations show us clearly that they were originated by the devil4 ,if you say this history is not true then you are bound to refute it4 ,if you cannot1 you are as much in duty bound to believe it as any other history1 even1 that ,george ,washington died in #agii6 ,if the bible argument1 and testimony from history are to be relied on as evidence1 then it is as clear as a sunbeam that the seventh day ,sabbath is a perpetual sign1 and is as binding upon man as it ever was4 ,but we are told we must keep the first day of the week for the ,sabbath as an ordinance to commemorate the resurrection of ,jesus4 ,i for one had rather believe ,paul4 ,see ,rom4 vi3 #c-e2 ,gal4 iii3 #bg2 ,col4 ii3 #ab4 ,a word more respecting time4 ,see #cast page4 ,here ,i have shown that the sun in the centre1 regulates all time for the earth--fifty-two weeks to the year1 one hundred and sixty-eight hours to the week1 the seventh of which is twenty-four hours4 ,jesus says there are but twelve hours in the day1 7from sunrise to sunset47 ,then twelve hours night to make a twenty-four hour day1 you see1 must always begin at a certain period of time4 ,no matter1 then whether the sun sets with us at eight in summer or #d o'clk in winter4 ,now by this1 and this is the scripture rule1 days and weeks can1 and most probably are1 kept at the ,north and ,south polar regions4 ,what an absurdity to believe that ,god does exonerate our fathers and brothers from keeping his ,sabbath while they are in these polar regions1 fishing for seals and whales1 should it be with them either all day or all night4 ,if they have lost their reckoning of days and weeks1 because there was1 or was not any sun six months of the time1 how could they learn what day of the week it was when they see the sun setting at #f o'clock on the equator1 if bound home from the ,south8 ,by referring to ,luke1 xxiii ch4 #ee1 #ef1 and xxiv3 #a1 we see that the people in ,palestine had kept the days and weeks right from #dgthe creation2 since which time1 astronomers teach us that not even fifteen minutes have been lost4 ,god does not require us to be any more exact in keeping time1 than what we may or have learned from the above rules1 but ,i am told there is a difference in time of twenty-four hours to the mariner that circumnavigates the globe4 ,that1 being true1 is known to them1 but it alters no time on the earth or sea4 ,but1 says one1 ,i should like to keep the ,sabbath in time1 just as ,jesus did4 ,then you must live in ,palestine1 where their day begins seven hours earlier than ours2 and yet it is at #f o'clock in the evening the same period1 though not the same by the sun1 in which we begin our day4 ,let me illustrate3 our earth1 something in the form of an orange1 is whirling over every twenty-four hours4 ,it measures three hundred and sixty degrees1 or about twenty-one thousand six hundred miles round1 in the manner you would pass a string round an orange4 ,now divide this three hundred and sixty degrees by the twenty-four hour day1 and the result is fifteen degrees1 or nine hundred miles4 ,then every fifteen degrees we travel or sail eastward1 the sun rises and sets one hour earlier in the period of the twenty-four hours3 therefore those who live in ,palestine1 one hundred and seven degrees east of us1 begins and closes the day seven hours earlier1 so in proportion all the way round the globe1 the sun always stationary6 ,then the ,sabbath begins precisely at #f o'clock on ,friday evening1 every where on this globe1 and ends at the same period on what we call ,saturday evening4 ,god says 'every thing on its day1' 'from even unto even shall ye celebrate your ,sabbath2' 'the evening and the morning was the first day4' ,he is an exact time keeper6 ,i say then1 in the name of all that is holy1 heavenly and true1 and as immortality is above all price1 let us see to it that we are found fearing ,god and keeping his ,,commandments1 for this1 we are taught1 'is the whole duty of man4' ,the proof is positive that the seventh day ,sabbath is included in the commandments4 ,bro4 ,marsh says1 ,keeping the ,sabbath is embraced in this covenant1 ,deut4 v3 #a-f1 made with the children of ,israel at ,horeb4 ,it was not made with their ,fathers 7the ,patriarchs7 but with us1 even us1 who are all of ,,us ,,here ,,alive ,,this ,,day4 v4 #c4 ,this testimony first negative1 he made it not with our ,fathers1 and then positive with us1 is conclusive4 ,not a single proof can be presented from either the old or new testament that it was instituted for any other people or nation4 ,now it is clear and positive #dhthat if the ,sabbath is not binding on any other people than the ,jews1 by the same rule not one of the commandments is binding on any other people1 who dare take such infidel ground8 ,was not the second covenant written on the hearts of the ,gentile1 even the law of ,commandments8 which ,paul says 'is ,holy1 just and good4' ,thirty years after the crucifixion he directs the ,ephesians to the keeping the fifth commandment1 that they may live long on the earth not the land of ,canaan4 vi3 #b1 #c4 ,did not ,god say that ,abraham kept his commandments1 statutes1 and laws8 ,this embraced the ,sabbath for circumcision1 and the ,sabbath were then the only laws1 or statutes1 or commandments written4 ,the fourth commandment was given two thousand years before ,abraham was born6 ,is not the stranger and all within their gates included in the covenant to keep the ,sabbath8 ,see ,exod4 xx3 #aj4 ,and did not ,god require them to keep ,,the ,sabbath before he made this covenant with them in ,horeb8 ,see ,exod4 xvi3 #bg-cj4 ,does not ,isaiah say that ,god will bless the man1 and the son of man1 and the sons of the stranger1 that keep ,,the ,sabbath8 ,these certainly mean the ,gentiles4 lvi3 #b-c1 #f-g4 ,also1 in the lviii4 ch4 #ac1 #ad1 the promise is to all that keep the ,sabbath4 ,to what people did the ,sabbath belong at the destruction of ,jerusalem1 nearly forty years after the crucifixion8 ,matt4 xxiv3 #bj4 ,the ,gentiles certainly were embraced in the covenant by this time6 ,why was it ,paul's manner always to preach on the seventh day ,sabbath to ,jews and ,gentiles8 ,by what authority do you call the seventh day ,sabbath1 the ,jewish ,sabbath8 ,the bible says it is the ,sabbath of the ,lord our ,god6 ,and ,jesus said that he was the ',lord of the ,sabbath day4' ,he moreover told the ,jews that the ,sabbath was made for ,,man6 ,where do you draw the distinguishing line1 to show which is and which is not ,,man between the natural seed of ,abraham and the ,gentiles8 ,is he the ,god of the ,jews only8 ,is he not also of the ,gentiles8 ,yes1 of the ,gentiles also6 ,then ,paul says 'there is no difference1' and that 'there is no respect of persons with ,god4' ,is it not clear1 then1 that the ,sabbath was made for ,adam and his posterity1 the whole family of man8 ,how very fearful you are that ,god's people should keep the bible ,sabbath6 ,you say1 'let us be cautious1 lest we disinherit ourselves by seeking the inheritance under the wrong covenant4' ,your meaning is1 not to seek to keep the ,sabbath covenant1 but the one made to ,abraham4 #di;,if you can tell us what precept there is in the ,abrahamic covenant that we must now keep to be saved1 that is not embraced in the one given at ,mount ,sinai1 then we will endeavor to keep that too1 with the ,sabbath of the ,lord our ,god4 ,if the ,sabbath1 as you say1 is abolished1 why do you1 ,,joseph ,,marsh1 continue to call the first day of the week the ,sabbath4 ,see ,v4 ,t41 #aeth ,july4 ,if you profess to utter the ,,voice ,,of ,,truth from the bible1 do be consistent1 and also willing that other papers1 besides yours and the ,advent ,herald1 should give the present truth to the flock of ,god4 ,i say let it go with lightning speed1 every way1 as does the political news by the electric telegraph4 ,if the whole law and the prophets hang on the commandments1 and by keeping them we enter into life1 how will you1 or ,i1 enter in if we do not 'keep the commandments4' ,see ,exod4 xvi3 #bh-cj4 ,jesus says1 therefore whosoever shall break one of these least commandments and shall teach men so1 shall be called the least in the kingdom1 c4 ,fear ,god and keep his commandments1 for this is the whole duty of man4 ,amen6 ,,god ,,has ,,made ,,three ,,everlasting ,,covenants ,,with ,,man4 ,the first one is the ,covenant of ,inheritance confirmed unto ,jacob for a law and unto ,israel for an everlasting ,inheritance4 ,see ,psl4 cv3 #h-aa4 ,acts vii3 #c-f4 ,eph4 i3 #ad4 ,second is an everlasting ,covenant of ,redemption4 ,see ,isa4 lxi3 #h1 #i4 ,i have made a ,covenant with my chosen1 ,i have sworn unto ,david my servant1 thy seed will ,i establish forever4 ,psl4 lxxxix3 #b-e4 ,see also #cd-cg vs4 ,my ,covenant will ,i not break1 nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips4 ,once have ,i sworn by my holiness that ,i will not lie unto ,david1 his seed shall endure forever1 and his throne as the sun before me--,it shall be established forever as the moon and as a faithful witness in heaven4 ,isa4 says it is sure1 lv3 #c2 liv3 #ac1 #ad4 ,ezekiel calls it a ,covenant of peace4 xxxiv3 #be4 ,in xxxvii ch4 #be and #bf v4 he shows clearly that ,david is ,christ1 and this ,covenant of peace is an everlasting ,covenant with his ,israel1 and will be known when his sanctuary is in the midst of them forever more4 #bh v4 ,the very same is brought to view by ,paul4 ,rom4 xi3 #bf1 #bg4 ,these two everlasting ,covenants are conditional1 and in the future4 ,the living saints of ,god inherit them by keeping #ejthe 'commandments of ,god and testimony of ,jesus'1 which can be nothing more nor less than what ,jer4 and ,paul calls the 'new or second covenant4' ,jer4 xxxi3 #ca-cc2 ,heb4 viii3 #f-aj2 by us the ,gospel ,covenant1 confirmed by ,christ and his ,apostles #ahjj years ago4 ,dan4 ix3 #bg2 ,acts x3 #cf-dj2 ,heb4 ii3 #c1 #d4 ,the old or first ,covenant was delivered to ,moses at ,mount ,sinai #cccg years ago1 and is about #aecg years older than the new1 or second1 or what we call the ,gospel ,covenant4 ,paul to the ,heb4 ix3 #a1 says1 ',this first ,covenant had ordinances of divine service1 and a worldly sanctuary1' meaning the ,old ,tabernacle with all its appendages1 7see #bc v417 and was dedicated with the blood of bulls and goats4 #ah1 #ai v4 7,macknight's trans474 ,see also ,exo4 xxiv3 #h2 ,lev4 xvi3 #ae4 ,this same ,covenant was the ten commandments 'written on tables of stone by the finger of ,god4' ,exo4 xxxiv3 #bg1 #bh2 ,deut4 ix3 #i-aa4 ,paul calls it the ,ark of the ,covenant4 ,heb4 ix3 #d4 ,moses built a ,tabernacle for it4 ,exo4 xl3 #c1 #ba4 ,david had it in his heart to build a house for it4 #a ,chr4 xxviii3 #b4 ,solomon built the house 7the ,temple7 and put the ,ark into it4 #b ,ch4 vi3 #aa4 ,these ten commandments then1 was the first ,covenant4 ,the ,tabernacle and all its furniture was appended to it1 and was called the ,sanctuary1 the building that contained it4 ,this ,covenant was broken by the ,jews1 with whom it was first made4 ,deut4 xxxi3 #ae1 #bj2 ,jer4 xxxi3 #cb2 ,ezek4 xvi3 #e1 #i2 and xvii3 #ai2 ,isa4 xxxiii3 #h4 ,now how evident it is that the ,jewish nation did not destroy nor abolish this ,covenant by breaking it4 ,as well may it be said that the man who violates the law of his country has abolished or destroyed the whole law4 ,no1 no6 men can no more destroy the law ,god has made than they can put out the light of the sun4 ,they can destroy themselves1 but ,god's work can they never4 ,hear ,god speak and may his word annihilate every thought to the contrary3 ,the ,lord thy ,god he is the faithful ,god1 which keepeth ,covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations4 ,is not this as much as #fc1jjj years in the future8 ,will he break it1 then think ye8 ,no1 you know it means forever6 ,deut4 vii3 #i4 ,do you still doubt4 ,let him speak once more4 ,my ,covenant will ,i not ,,break nor ,,alter look at this1 you that say ,god has altered this ,covenant so as to change this ,sabbath from the #gth to the #ast day of the week4 the thing that has gone out of my mouth4 ,psl4 lxxxix3 #cd4 ,then it is immutable6 unchangeable6 immortal6 as well may man undertake to annihilate the sun4 #ea;,jesus then1 as ,i have shown1 came to establish the new ,covenant1 and as ,i have before stated1 he stripped off all these appendages1 the law of ceremonies1 the hand writing of ordinances1 the carnal commandments 7,paul17 from the first ,covenant1 the ten commandments1 leaving them pure as when they first came from his ,father's hand1 and nailed as ,paul shows to the ,col4 all these ceremonies to his cross1 at the same hour he sealed the new ,covenant with his blood1 called the everlasting ,covenant4 ,heb4 xiii3 #bj4 ,paul in the viii4 ch4 on this ,covenant1 extracts from ,jer4 xxxi3 #ca-cd1 which shows us clearly what he means 7see #h-abv17 and says in the #g v41 if the first one had been faultless then no place could be found for the second4 #f v4 says this covenant is established on better promises because ,jesus is the mediator of it4 xii3 #bd4 ,in x3 #ae1 #af1 he quotes from the viii4 ch4 to show that the ,holy ,ghost is also a witness4 ,see how1 in ii4 ,rom4 #ac-af1 when the ,gentiles which have not the law1 7that is the ten commandments on tables of stone7 ,,do the things contained in the law 7the ten commandments7 they show the work of the law 7the ten commandments7 written on their hearts1 their thoughts in the mean while accusing1 or else excusing1 7when1 ,paul87 in the day when ,god shall judge the secrets of men by my gospel4 ,then it must be now4 ,oh no1 says the reader1 ,paul means at the day of judgment4--,i am glad you admit that condemnation overtakes the transgressors of the law written on our hearts somewhere4 ,for proof that he means the commandments read #ba1 #bb v42 you will of course understand that it is not the law of ceremonies1 for these had been abolished more than #be years before4 ,see chronology ,a4 ,d4 #fj4 ,now see ,heb4 viii3 #aj again4 ,i will put my laws into their minds and write them in their hearts4 ,this is the very same1 the commandment1 the covenant1 for there is no other law called ,god's law that we can refer to in the bible but this4 ,in ,jer4 xxxii3 #dj1 the everlasting covenant which ,paul quotes in xiii ,heb4 is the same promise as in ,jer4 xxxi4 ,now in ,ezek4 xvi3 #h4 ,this is the first covenant to ,moses2 that it is broken see #ei v4 #fj-fb1 shows the second covenant as in ,jer41 read the history in the chapter4 ,in ch4 xx3 #cg1 where the promise is1 ,i will bring you into the bond 7or delivering1 see margin17 of the covenant4 ,at first view it would appear as though here was another implied1 but ,i think the preceding verses1 particularly the #abth and #bjth1 show it to be the covenant in which the #eb,sabbath is included1 or it may be the everlasting covenant of redemption1 given to ,jesus just previous to the resurrection4 ,paul clearly shows that there are but two covenants under the law in his allegory to the ,galatians iv3 #ba-bg1 and these two must of necessity1 as ,i have shown embrace the ten commandments4 ,now has this new covenant been broken by man as was the first8 ,hear ,isaiah3 ,behold the ,lord maketh the earth empty1 the inhabitants of the earth burned1 and but few left4 ,why8 ,because they have broken the everlasting covenant4 ,see xxiii3 #e4 ,read the whole chapter4 ,paul says that the professed church in the last days will be covenant breakers4 #b ,tim4 iii3 #b-e4 7,macknight's translation47 ,this must of course be violating1 especially1 the fourth commandment1 the ,lord's ,sabbath4 ,it would be the height of absurdity to attempt to apply it to the first day of the week1 because this is included in the six working days1 which ,god never sanctified nor set apart for an holy day4 ,now what is to be appended to this everlasting covenant 7called new not in respect of its date3 it being made from everlasting1 and will continue forever17 to ensure us an entrance into the gates of the holy city4 ,answer4 ,the testimony of ,jesus4 ,rev4 xii3 #ag4 ,that old dragon the devil is pursuing the remnant 7the last end7 of ,god's children1 which keep the commandments of ,god1 and have the testimony of ,jesus ,christ4 ,in the xiv3 #ab1 ,john says the faith of ,jesus1 7same meaning47 ,now what is this faith or testimony of ,jesus8 ,john shows that he was banished to ,patmos for the word of ,god and the testimony of ,jesus ,christ4 ,rev4 #a1 #i1 he says he bore record of the testimony of ,jesus1 and what he saw4 #b v4 ,just what ,jesus had directed his disciples to do4 ,see ,math4 xxviii3 #ai1 #bj4 ,teach all nations to observe all things whatsoever ,i have commanded you4 ,this then is what makes the covenant new1 appending to it the teaching or testimony of ,jesus1 after the ceremonial law had been nailed to the cross4 ,here it is perfectly clear that the everlasting covenant the ten commandments have undergone no change whatever4 ,indeed it is impossible that the law of ,god could be changed2 do you say it is possible ,i may be mistaken8 ,then ,i will appeal to ,jesus4 ,he says it is easier for heaven and earth to pass than one tittle of the law to fail4 ,you say this is no proof1 for the law of ,god is the word taught in the old and new testaments4 ,see here then1 in ,matt4 v3 #ag1 #ah4 ,is not this the same law as in ,luke #af3 #ag8 ,yes4 #ec,very well then1 see next verse1 here he unhesitatingly calls them the commandments2 for proof that he means the ten commandments1 read #bast verse1 shall not kill1 now #bgth nor commit adultery1 then #cc;d1 nor take ,god's name in vain4 ,his exposition of them as a whole is certainly as clear as this in ,matt4 xxii3 #ce-dj1 reduced to two precepts1 love ,god1 and love your neighbor1 on these two hang all the law 7ceremonial7 and the prophets4 ,dont you see then that if this law is taken away1 changed or abolished1 that the prophets must fall with it1 as certainly as a building would if the foundation was swept away8--,the argument is clear that the prophecies cannot be sustained without the law4 ,again1 see ,luke x3 #be-bh4 ,the lawyer says1 ,master what shall ,i do to inherit eternal life8 ,jesus said unto him what is written in the ,,law8 how readest thou8 ,he begins and quotes the two precepts 7the essence of the ten commandments7 given by the ,saviour in ,matt4 xxii4 ,jesus says thou hast answered ,,right1 this do and thou shalt live4 ,is this a safe rule for us8 ,yes1 if you can believe the ,saviour4 ,i ask if it could be so if any of the law should fail8 ,no1 that would undermine the foundation4 ,then ,i have not appealed to ,jesus in vain4 ,if all of this does not convince you1 just hear the ,prophets4 ,the good man's delight is in the law of the ,lord1 and in his law doth he meditate day and night4 ,psl4 i3 #a1 #b4 ,the law of the ,lord is perfect1 converting the soul4 xix4 ,the law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver4 xix3 #gb4 ,great peace have they that love thy law1 and nothing shall offend them4 #afe4 ,does the changing of the law by the little horn bring peace8 ,he that turneth away his ear from hearing the law1 even his prayer shall be an abomination4 ,prov1 #bh3 #i4 ,read this passage again4 ,you that say the ,lord is not so particular about his law1 whether we keep this day or that for a holy day4 ,he says every thing upon his day4 ,seal the law among my disciples4 ,isa4 viii3 #af4 ,what for8 ,it will be binding on them in the new heavens and the new earth4 #ff3 #bb1 #bc1 ,to the law and the testimony4 #bj4 ,what can you prove by it if it is changed or abolished8 ,he will magnify the law and make it honorable4 #db3 #ba4 ,how could he do that if he was going to change or destroy it4 ,the people in whose heart is my law1 fear ye not the reproach of men4 #ea3 #g4 ,after those days saith the ,lord1 ,i will put my laws in their inward parts1 and write it in their hearts4 ,jer4 #ca3 #edcc4 ,then we are certainly bound to obey them4 ,her ,priests have violated my law--and have put no difference between the holy and profane--and have hid their eyes from my ,,sabbaths1 and ,i am profaned among them4 ,ezek4 xxii3 #bf4 ,it is just so2 we believe it1 ,lord4 ,it is even among them that say they are looking for ,jesus daily4 ,hear the ,apostles4 ,we establish the law4 ,rom4 iii3 #ca4 ,the law is holy1 just and good4 ,what do you mean ,paul8 ,the professed ,christian world dont believe your testimony3 they are teaching that certain part of this law was changed or abolished #be years before you made this assertion4 ,see chronology4 ,love is the fulfilling of the law4 xiii3 #aj4 ,see ,matt4 vii3 #ab1 and ,gal4 v3 #ad4 ,james says it is a perfect ,royal law of liberty4 ,see page #bf1 ch4 #a3 #be1 and ii3 #h1 #i1 #aj1 #ab1 and iv3 #b4 ,this testimony is also rejected as an absurdity1 being no better than ,paul's1 #be years out of date1 for they will have it that the #dth commandment1 the ,sabbath1 was changed at the ,resurrection4 ,the commandments of ,god mean the same as the law4--,all his commandments are sure1 they are established forever and ever4 ,who then can change the ,sabbath8 ,a good understanding have all they that do his commandments4 ,blessed is the man that delighteth greatly in his commandments4 ,psl4 cxi3 and cxii4 ,o let me not wander from thy commandments4 xix3 #aj1 and #ce4 ,i will delight myself in thy commandments which ,i have loved4 #dg4 ,thy commandment is exceeding broad4 #if4 ,all thy commandments are truth4 #aea4 ,can it be proved that ,god ever altered or changed the truth8 ,yes1 if it can be proved that he changed the ,sabbath4 ,o that thou hadst harkened to my commandments1 then had thy peace been as a river1 and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea4 ,isa4 #dh3 #ah4 ,see ,jesus' exposition and reference to the commandments ,matt4 v3 #ai1 xv3 #c-f4 ,we are told by those who can hardly bear a contradiction1 that the #eth commandment means ,jesus for father1 and ,new ,jerusalem for mother4 ,jesus shows it is our natural parents1 and so does ,paul to the ,eph4 vi3 #a-c4 ,see also ,matt4 xix3 #ag-ai1 and xxii3 #ce-dj4 ,mark xii3 #bi-ca1 ,john xiii3 #cd1 xiv3 #ca1 and xv3 #ab4 ,the last three quotations relate to his own commandment4 ,see ,john's testimony on this point4 #ast ,john ii3 #d1 #g1 iii3 #ba1 #bd4 ,rev4 xii3 #ag1 and xiv3 #ab4 ,now let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter1 fear ,god and keep his commandments2 for this is the whole duty of man1 ,blessed are they that do his #ee;commandments1 that they may have right to the tree of life and may enter in through the gates into the city4 ,rev4 xxii3 #ad1 ,ecc4 xii3 #ac4 ,do you ask for the foundation for this mass of evidence8 ,when ,israel violated the holy ,sabbath of rest given in the beginning1 ,gen4 ii3 #b1 #c1 #a ,john ii3 #g1 the ,lord said unto ,moses1 how long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws8 ,what are they1 ,lord8 ,answer1 the seventh day ,sabbath4 ,see ,exo4 xvi3 #bg-cj4 ,now if we trace the bible through in relation to the ,sabbath we shall learn that the ,lord's threatenings1 judgments1 and promises1 are more than ten fold in comparison with the other nine commandments4 ,what is the reason of this8 ,answer1 the keeping of ,,god',s ,,sabbath ,,holy ,,sanctifies ,,and ,,saves ,,the ,,soul6 but the keeping of one1 or all the other nine without it will not4 ,now1 dear reader1 if you are still undecided about the keeping of ,god's ,sabbath1 let me persuade you to read these two pages over again1 and settle in your mind what you will do with this mass of testimony1 directly from ,god2 his ,prophets2 ,jesus ,christ and his ,apostles4 ,dare you say you are now 'living by every word of ,god1' and yet reject all this1 with what other testimony is here presented to prove the keeping of the seventh day ,sabbath8 ,dare you run such a risk because the great mass of professed believers in ,christendom are doing so8 ,do you think you can be saved by such a faith and practice8 ,your ministering spirit 7if you yet have one17 says no1 no6 utterly impossible6 ,then receive the truth in the love of it4 ,do you perceive that the seventh day ,sabbath is ,god's first law for man8 ,gen4 ii3 #b1 #c1 and the very last promise he ever made to man of a future inheritance is based on the 'doing of these commandments4' ,it would not help your case at all if you could make out five thousand1 instead of ten1 commandments2 for you would still have to include the ten to get them all4 ,what a beautiful delineation the cxix ,psalm is1 of this wonderful prototype delivered by ,god to ,moses at ,mount ,sinai4 ,the ,commandments are rehearsed twenty-two times4 ,the ,law twenty-three4 ,the ,testimony twenty-three4 ,the ,statutes twenty-one4 ,the ,precepts twenty-two4 ,the ,judgments twenty-two4 ,the ,word thirty-eight4 ,all referring to the ,ark of the ,covenant of ,god4 ,see how perfectly ,david and ,nehemiah links them together with the ,sabbath in the xix ,psl3 #g-i2 ,neh4 ix3 #ac1 #ad4 ',the #ef;,commandments1 ,law1 ,testimony and ,judgments1 are true and righteous all together4' ,proof--,commandments and ,laws1 ,exo4 xvi3 #bh-cj2 ,testimony1 ,exo4 xxv3 #af2 ,isa4 viii3 #bj2 ,word1 ,exo4 xxxiv3 #bg2 ,mark vii3 #aj1 #ac2 ,statutes and ,judgments1 ,deut4 vi3 #ag1 #bj2 x3 #ac2 ,lev4 xviii3 #e2 ,precepts1 ,neh4 ix3 #ac1 #ad2 ,dan4 ix3 #e4 ,who believes that the person that refrains from worshiping 'idols or images1' will be saved for that8 or because he honors his father or mother8 or because he is no murderer8 or does not commit adultery1 or steal1 or bear false witness1 or covet1 or not swear8 ,thousands on thousands have conformed to some and even all the nine1 that made no pretensions to religion4 ,we must keep the whole if we would be saved2 neither can we be saved by keeping the ,sabbath alone4 ,james says ',if we fail in one we are guilty of the whole4' ,god says 'verily my ,sabbaths ye shall keep--that ye may know that ,i the ,lord do ,,sanctify you4' ,exo4 xxxi3 #ac4 ,now ,i ask if there is any wise men among us that can tell us how the soul is sanctified unless he keeps the ,sabbath ,,holy4 ,ezekiel says the ,sabbath was given that we might know that the ,lord ,,sanctifies4 xx4 ,says the reader1 what do you think about those that have died in faith1 keeping the first day ,sabbath8 ,just as ,i do of those that never heard the everlasting gospel at the hour of his judgment4 ,look at the state of the world now1 since they have rejected this message1 the answer is plain then that condemnation comes1 when light or present truth is presented and rejected4 ,we may think our plea of ignorance may excuse us now4 ,but just think of that awful hour1 that gathering storm that is now clothing the moral world with darkness that may be felt4 ,the sure and certain precursor of that tremendous rush when ,god roars out of ,zion1 and utters his voice from ,jerusalem1 preparatory to the sign of the ,son of man in heaven and the trump of the archangel and a great sound1 with so much power that earth and sea will reel1 and rock1 and rend2 and cast forth the righteous dead1 and the living saints changed2 all going up together to meet their glorified ,lord4 ,no plea of ignorance will then answer our purpose3 thoughts then rushing through our minds with more than lightning speed1 will touch every point as on the magnetic telegraph1 and show us where and when we rejected the present truth4 ,good ,god help the honest ones to see it now1 for then it certainly will be forever too late4 ,that ,god's holy ,sabbath is a present truth ,i have not a shadow #egof a doubt2 that it is stamped with immortality and will be present truth forever and ever1 no mortal can dispute3--,it was established in ,paradise without limitation4 ,gen4 ii3 #b1 #c4 ,god says my covenant will ,i not ,,break nor ,,alter4 ,jesus has shown that not one tittle of this covenant can be altered1 and told his children 7not the ,jews only7 how they should pray about the ,sabbath #cf years after his death4 ,a little farther in the distance stands ,john the last of the disciples pointing us to ,paradise for the commandments4 ,after wading through a few years tribulation1 in vision he sees the new ,jerusalem1 the ,mother of us all1 the ,paradise restored1 and cries out blessed are they that ,,do 7that practice7 his commandments1 they are going into the city4 ,there they will keep the ,sabbath without opposition1 as at the beginning4 ,isa4 #ff3 #bc1 ,heb4 iv3 #i4 ,this looks just like ,god's work4 ,man has undertaken to break and alter this law by changing the ,sabbath4 ,it would be much easier for him to bail the ocean dry1 and carry the water to ,jupiter by the spoonful2 and sweep the thick clouds from the heavens in a thunder storm with the wing of a raven4 ,who then can alter this covenant8 ,echo answers1 who can alter this covenant8 ,now who cannot see clearly that the main pillar and foundation of this ,everlasting covenant is the ten commandments1 the law of ,god1 the constitution of the ,bible3 for every nation1 kindred1 tongue1 and people1 given first in ,paradise1 re-enacted with the nine additional commandments1 written on tables of stone by the finger of ,god on mount ,sinai1 giving it the form of a statute1 then delivered to ,moses1 broken by the ,jewish1 just as men break any law without destroying it4 ,the same ten commandments and laws1 called by ,paul the new or second and everlasting covenant1 confirmed by ,jesus1 and sealed with his own blood eighteen hundred years ago1 written in our minds and our hearts from one generation to another to the present time1 always understood when developed in the believer's practising and doing them1 with the promise annexed that such obedience will be rewarded by an entrance into the holy city4 ,rev4 xxii3 #ad4 ,now in this covenant or ten commandments ,god has given us a perpetual covenant1 a sign forever1 and this is the seventh day ,sabbath4 ,see ,exo4 #ca3 #af4 ,this may bear some comparison with the visions of ,ezekiel and ,john4 ,their work was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel4 ,i will give him a white stone1 and in #ehthe stone a new name4 ,so with the ,sabbath it is the main and essential thing4 ,it is clearly that if we keep this holy as ,god has shown us1 then we shall be ,,sanctified4 ,so we see a holy sanctified soul cannot violate the commandments4 ,but if we reject the light and still persist in saying we will keep one of the working days holy which ,god never sanctified nor set apart for us1 how does the love of ,god dwell in that soul8 ,if ye love me keep my commandments4 ,now the history of ,god's people for the last seven years1 or more1 is described by ,john in ,rev4 xiv3 #f-ac4 ,an angel preaching the everlasting gospel at the hour of ,god's judgment4 ,this without any doubt represents all those who were preaching the second ,advent doctrine since #ahdj4 ,during this proclamation1 there followed another angel1 saying ,babylon is fallen1 is fallen4 ,this angel was some of the same ,advent lecturers1 7for invisible angels dont preach to men47 ,and the third angel follows them1 showing the curse that befell all such as worship the beast or his image1 or receive his mark1 that is1 if they go back again4 ,the same angel or voice that is brought to view in ch4 #ah3 #d1 you see he follows the one that announces the fall of ,babylon1 and cries1 come out of her my people3 this was a little before and during a cry at ,midnight in the fall of #ahdd4 ,and ,god's people did respond to that call and come out1 does any one ask where from8 ,answer1 the professed churches and no where else4 ,these churches then are ,babylon6 ,now when this cry ended1 ,john describes another very different company1 in their patience1 7or trying time17 keeping the commandments of ,god and the faith or testimony of ,jesus2 who are they8 ,why1 the very same that came out of ,babylon4 ,well1 were they not all good christians that obeyed and came out of ,babylon8 ,they will be if they belong to this last company and pass through the trial4 ,but did they not keep the commandments of ,god before this company was developed8 ,yes all but the #dth commandment4 ,therefore as ,i have shown1 ,john gave us no credit for keeping the first for the seventh day ,sabbath1 neither could it be called keeping the commandments1 for if we did it ever so ignorantly1 even1 we still violated the very essential law in the commandments1 and all that ,john could say therefore was1 that them which had the mark of the beast kept some of the commandments4 ,james says if we fail in one we are guilty of the whole4 ,now that such a people can be found on the earth as #ei;described in the #ab v4 and have been uniting in companies for the last two years1 on the commandments of ,god and faith or testimony of ,jesus1 is indisputable and clear4 ,i say here then is demonstrated proof that ,babylon has fallen1 and whoever undertakes to prove the contrary must annihilate this people1 or pervert the scriptures4 ,john further shows that this is a remnant 7which of course means the last end7 made war with1 7his meaning is clear17 for keeping the commandments of ,god and the testimony of ,jesus ,christ4 xii3 #ag4 ,here another question arises1 why this people should be persecuted for keeping the commandments1 c41 when all1 even them which have the mark of the beast1 profess to keep them4 ,i suppose all that enrages the ,devil and his army is this2 that this remnant are actually practising what they believe is the testimony of ,god and the testimony of ,jesus1 selling what they have1 giving alms1 laying up their treasure in heaven1 casting themselves entirely loose from this wicked world2 doing as their master told them to do1 washing one another's feet1 and as the apostles have taught1 'greet all the brethren with an holy kiss1' 'salute every saint in christ ,jesus4' ,living 'by every word which proceedeth out of the mouth of ,god1' practice keeping the ,sabbath holy1 just as ,god has told them in the commandments4 ,but says the reader1 there are tens of thousands that are looking for ,jesus1 that dont believe the above doctrines1 what will become of them8 ,consult ,john1 he knows better than we do2 he has only described two companies4 ,see xiv3 #i-aa1 #ab4 ,one is keeping the commandments and faith of ,jesus4 ,the other has the mark of the beast4 ,how8 ,see page #de4 ,is it not clear that the first day of the week for the ,sabbath or holy day is a mark of the beast4 ,it surely will be admitted that the ,devil was and is the father of all the wicked deeds of ,imperial and papal ,rome4 ,it is clear then from this history that ,sunday1 or first day1 is his ,sabbath throughout christendom4 ,and that he has succeeded among other civilized nations to sanctify and set apart for holy days every working day which ,god gave us1 that he did not sanctify4 ,see page #hth4 ,he will be very careful therefore not to make war on any but those who keep ,god's ,sabbath holy4 ,contrast this with page #cj4 ,john shows that these will all be judged according to their works1 or as their work shall be4 ,but them that do 7that practice7 his commandments may enter in through the gates into the city4 ,but do not some of the rest go in8 ,he does not say they do4 ,he #fjsays his reward is with him to give to every man according as his work shall be4 ,well1 who are left out8 ,see #ae v4 ,and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie4 ,now see #d of ,john ii4 ,he that saith ,i know him and keepeth not his commandments is a liar4 ,but does not the vii ,rev4 describe a great multitude saved after the #add1jjj8 ,yes1 but ,i conclude that these were raised from the dead4 ,the original design of sending out this work was to show that these commandments1 the keeping of the ,lord's ,sabbath1 would save the living saints only at the coming of ,jesus4 ,now that the keeping of the seventh day ,sabbath has been made void by the working of satan1 and is to be restored as one of the all things spoken of by all the holy prophets since the world began1 before ,jesus can come1 is evident4 ,see ,acts iii3 #bj1 #ba4 ,and they that shall be of ,,thee shall build the old waste places--thou shalt raise up the foundation of many generations1 and thou shalt be called the ,,repairer of the breach1 the ,,restorer of paths to dwell in4 ,isa4 #eh3 #ab4 ,the two following verses show that keeping or restoring the ,sabbath is the special work4 ,jesus says1 they shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven1 that do and teach the commandments4 ,that there will yet be a mighty struggle about the restoring and keeping the seventh day ,sabbath1 that will test every living soul that enters the gates of the city1 cannot be disputed4 ,it is evident the ,devil is making war on all such4 ,see ,rev4 xii3 #ag4 ,remember the ,sabbath day and keep it holy4 ,amen4 ,,who ,,are ,,the ,,true ,,israel8 ,in the xxxi4 ch4 of ,exod41 ,god says1 wherefore the children of ,israel shall keep the ,sabbath1 to observe the ,sabbath throughout their generations for a perpetual covenant2 it is a sign between me and the children of ,israel forever4 #af1 #ag v4 ,who are the true ,israelites8 ,answer1 ,god's people4 ,hear ,paul3 ,is he the ,god of the ,jews only8 ,is he not also of the ,gentiles8 ,yes of the ,gentiles1 also2 from uncircumcision through faith ,rom4 iii3 #bi1 #cj4 ,god gave his re-enacted commandment or covenant to the natural ,jew in ,b4 ,c4 #adia4 ,they broke this covenant1 as he told ,moses they would1 for which he partially destroyed and dispersed them2 ,god then brought in a new covenant which continued the sign of the ,sabbath1 which was #fa;confirmed by ,jesus and his ,apostle about #aebe years from the first4 ,see ,heb4 viii3 #h1 #aj1 #ac2 ,rom4 ii3 #ae4 ,their breaking the first covenant never could destroy the commandments of ,god4 ,therefore this new or second covenant1 made with the house of ,,israel1 ,heb4 viii3 #aj1 7not the natural ,jew only47 is indelibly written upon the heart4 ,now every child takes the name of his parents4 ,let us see what the angel ,gabriel says to ,mary concerning her son3 ,the ,lord ,god will give him the throne of ,david his father1 and he shall reign over the house of ,jacob forever4 ,luke i3 #ca1 #cc4 ,now the prophecy3 ,there shall come a star out of ,jacob and a sceptre shall rise out of ,israel4 ,num4 ,now #agce years before ,jesus was born1 ,god changed ,jacob's name to ,israel1 because he prevailed with him4 ,this then is the family name for all who overcome or prevail4 ,god gave this name to his spiritual child1 namely1 ,israel4 ,then ,jesus will reign over the house of ,israel forever4 ,this must include all that are saved in the everlasting kingdom4 ,further1 ,joseph was the natural son of ,jacob1 or ,israel4 ,in his prophetic view and dying testimony to his children1 he says1 ,joseph is a fruitful bough1 from thence is the shepherd the stone of ,israel4 ,gen4 xlix3 #bb-cd4 ,then this ,shepherd 7,jesus7 is a descendant1 and is of the house of ,israel4 ,does he not say that he is the ,shepherd of the ,sheep8--,what1 of the ,jews only8 ,no1 but also of the ,gentile1 for the promise is not through the law 7of ceremonies7 but through the righteousness of faith1 ,rom4 iv3 #ac4 ,micah says1 they shall smite the ,judge of ,israel1 that is to be the ruler in ,israel4 v3 #a1 #b4 ,now ,jesus never was a judge nor ruler in ,israel4 ,this1 then1 is a prophecy in the future1 that he will judge1 and be the ,ruler over1 the whole house of ,israel4 ,all the family1 both natural ,jew and ,gentile1 will assume the family name1 the whole ,israel of ,god4 ,the angel ,gabriel's message1 then1 is clear2 ,david is the father of ,jesus1 according to the flesh1 and ,jacob1 or rather ,israel his father1 and ,jesus reigns over the house of ,israel forever4 ,paul says1 ,he is not a ,jew which is one outwardly but he is a ,jew which is one inwardly4 ,rom4 ii4 ,there is no difference between the ,jew and ,greek1 7or ,gentile7 for they are not all ,israel that are of ,israel1 neither because they are the seed of ,abraham are they all children4 ,why8 ,because the children of the promise1 of ,isaac 7is the true seed47 chs4 ix and x4 ,to the ,gallatians he says1 ,now to ,abraham 7the ,grandfather of ,israel7 and his seed were the #fbpromises made3 not to many1 but as of one and to thy seed which is ,,christ--then says1 then says1 there is neither ,jew nor ,greek--but one in ,christ ,jesus1 and if ye be ,christ then are ye ,abraham's seed and heirs according to the promise4 iii4 ,and as many as walk according to this rule1 peace be on them1 and mercy1 and upon the ,,israel of ,god4 vi4 ,this1 then1 is the name of the whole family in heaven2 ,christ is ,god's only son and lawful heir1 none but the true seed can be joint heirs with ,christ in the covenant made with ,abraham4 ,ezekiel's prophecy in xxxvii4 ch41 ,god says he will bring up out of their graves the whole house of ,israel4 and ,i will put my spirit in you and ye shall live4 #aa-ad4 ,if ,god here means any other than the spiritual ,israel1 then ,universalism is true--for the whole house of natural ,israel did not die in faith2 if the wicked ,jews are to be raised and live before ,god1 then will all the wicked6 ,for ,god is no respecter of persons3 ,and the heathen shall know that ,i the ,lord do sanctify ,israel when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them forevermore4 #bh v4 ,here1 then1 we prove that the dead and living saints are the whole ,israel of ,god1 and the ,covenant and ,sign is binding on them into the gates of the holy city4 ,rev4 xx3 #ad4 ,,two ,,questions ,,for ,,shepherds ,,and ,,principals ,,of ,,the ,,flock1 ,,any ,,where ,,and ,,every ,,where4 ,when and where has ,god abolished his commandments and laws8 namely the seventh day ,sabbath as recorded in ,exo4 xvi3 #bh-cj4 ,when1 and where did ,god ever sanctify the first1 or any other day but the seventh to be kept for a holy day of rest8 ,will ,god ever justify any living soul for attempting to keep one of the six working days holy8 #fc,,recapitulation #a4 ,page #e4 ,when was the ,sabbath instituted8 ,here we have endeavored to show when1 and how it continued until its re-enactment on ,mount ,sinai4 #b4 ,page #aa4 ,has the ,sabbath been abolished since the seventh day of creation8 ,if so1 when1 and where is the proof8 ,here we believe we have adduced incontestible proof from the scriptures2 from the two separate codes of laws given1 viz3 the first on tables of stone1 called by ,god1 prophets1 ,jesus1 and his ,apostle4 #c4 ,the commandments of ,god4 #b;d code1 the ,book of ,moses1 as written from the mouth of ,god1 the book of ceremonies1 combining ecclesiastical and civil law1 which ,paul shows was nailed to the cross with all their ,sabbaths as carnal commandments1 7the law of ceremonies17 because their feasts commenced and ended with a ,sabbath4 ,see ,lev xxiii4 ,please read from #bjth page onward1 how ,jesus and the ,apostle make the distinction4 #c4 ,page #ca4 ,was the seventh day ,sabbath ever changed8 ,if so1 when1 and for what reason8 ,here we find1 by examining the proofs set forth by those who favor and insist upon the change1 that there is not one passage of scripture in the bible to sustain it1 but to the contrary1 that ,jesus kept it and gave directions about it at the destruction of ,jerusalem4 ,paul also1 and other ,apostles taught how we were to keep the commandments4 #d4 ,page #de4 ,the ,history which is uncontroverted4 #e4 ,the time when the ,sabbath commences4 ,see pages #ce and #cf1 not #ca1 as on page #df4 ,the sun in the centre of the globe1 at the commencement of the sacred year 7,march or ,april7 is the great regulator or time-keeper for every living soul on this planet4 ,gen4 #a3 #ad1 ,exo4 xii3 #b4 #f4 ,page #di begins with the covenants4 ,here by tracing them through the bible we find them founded on the ten commandments4 ,the ,sabbath of the ,lord our ,god1 the connecting link1 or covenant within the covenant2 the first law ever given1 annexed to the last promise ever made1 which if obeyed will save them that are alive when ,jesus comes 444 ,sabbath ,,holy4 444 principals of the flock4 ,transcriber's ,notes ,page numbers from the original have been
