because the colored people of the ,south are passing through a terrible ordeal1 and need all the encouragement and help that is possible1 to save them from utter discouragement4 ,it is said that the work of this ,association is among the agencies most helpful in their elevation4 ,last year a ,concert ,exercise was prepared in this office for the use of ,sunday-schools1 giving a sketch of the life of the ,great ,emancipator4 ,we have copies remaining1 which we will gladly forward when requested to do so4 ,pastors and school superintendents may vary this exercise by introducing other patriotic ostracized1 ridiculed1 slandered1 mobbed1 and their lives threatened4 ,it is said that the best apples in the orchard are on the tree that has the most clubs under it4 ,if this rule applies to people as well1 then the ,tappans were very good men4 ,they were honest and prosperous in business2 they were sincere and active ,christians1 giving liberally to all forms of benevolent effort1 foreign and home missions1 the ,bible and ,tract ,societies1 theological and college education1 but their one great fault was they were abolitionists--a fault that covered a multitude of their virtues4 ,they were both deeply interested in the ,american ,missionary ,association1 but ,mr4 ,lewis ,tappan was most active in its behalf1 and it is of him that we wish to speak4 ,illustration3 7,portrait of ,lewis was very efficient in his activities in securing the organization of the ,association1 was present at the meeting in ,albany1 was elected one of its executive board1 and its first treasurer4 ,this last office he held for many years1 entirely without compensation4 ,he interested himself in every form of its activities1 and was a frequent contributor to ,,the ,,american ,,missionary4 ,a 99 affixed to many articles shows a portion of his contributions to the early issues of this periodical4 ,mr4 ,tappan was an earnest ,christian man and very conscientious in regard to the distribution of his wealth4 ,he wrote two tracts1 endeavoring to show that men should not accumulate property to be left to be subject to litigation after death1 but that it should be expended during life4 ,mr4 ,tappan lived up to his own theory--giving much during life and leaving little at his death4 ,mr4 ,tappan had the gratification of seeing the slaves emancipated and the still greater gratification of aiding with all his strength of brain and purse in fitting them for the responsibilities and privileges of their new life4 ,his was a life worth living4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,hon4 ,,william ,,jackson4 find an able and influential man with sufficient courage to accept its presidency4 ,but the man was found4 ,hon4 ,william ,jackson1 a citizen of ,boston1 and an active and successful business man1 was so deeply in sympathy with the poor slave that he was willing to assume the position1 and all the more because others shrunk from it4 ,mr4 ,jackson was a member of the ,massachusetts ,legislature1 and afterward was elected to ,congress1 and was subsequently reelected for another term by an almost unanimous vote4 ,he was selected by the ,liberty ,party as its first candidate for ,governor of the ,state of ,massachusetts4 ,he was a warm and efficient advocate of the temperance cause4 ,he devoted much of his time and energies to the establishment of railroads in ,massachusetts--among others the ,boston and ,albany1 ,boston and ,worcester1 and ,providence and ,worcester4 ,in various capacities as director or general agent he rendered efficient service in the work of these roads4 ,but the charm of ,mr4 ,jackson's life was its ,christian element4 ,at the age of thirty-seven he moved to ,newton1 ,mass41 where he spent the remainder of his life4 ,he was actively engaged in the erection of the church edifice and gathering the new church1 and was steadfast in his attendance at the prayer meeting1 monthly concert1 ,sunday-school1 and other exercises4 ,advancing years and failing health led him to make a somewhat extended trip through ,europe4 ,but life was coming to its end1 and it closed with him in deepening interest in the cause of ,christ at home and abroad1 and in the strongest assurances of a triumphant faith4 99 99 99 99 99 ,s',,kokomish ,,mission4 ,the venerable ,dr4 ,cushing ,eells left behind him many mementoes of his remarkable activity in promoting educational and missionary work in ,oregon and ,washington1 on the ,pacific coast4 ,nor with his decease has his good work ceased4 ,two sons of his have gone forward in similar lines of effort4 ,his son1 ,major ,edwin ,eells1 was one of the first nominees of the ,american ,missionary ,association under ,general ,grant's ,peace ,policy1 and he was renominated by us so long as we were allowed to make nominations1 and he has been continued ever since1 making a total service of twenty-three years and a half4 ,during this time the ,indians have received titles to their lands and have become citizens4 ,his effective hand has been seen in all their improvement4 ,but now we learn that he has been notified that he is soon to be relieved4 ,his removal is said to be due solely to politics4 ,we are sorry for the ,indians1 and we are ashamed of a ,government that will deprive them for partisan purposes of a good agent4 ,another son of ,dr4 ,eells1 ,rev4 ,myron ,eells1 was appointed as a missionary at the ,s'kokomish ,agency by the ,american ,board1 and when the transfer of missions was made he was continued at the post under the ,american ,missionary ,association--a position that he still holds4 ,the subjoined sketch from his pen shows that in point of honesty1 in some respects1 at least1 the ,indians surpass their white neighbors4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,honorable ,,record ,,for ,,indians4 ,,by ,,rev4 ,,myron ,,eells1 ,s',,kokomish ,,agency1 ,,washington4 ,during the late financial stringency the principal business man near this reservation failed1 and put his property into the hands of a receiver4 ,the ,s'kokomish ,indians owed him about three thousand dollars1 and the whites owed him over twenty thousand4 ,the first business of the receiver was to try to collect these debts4 ,after he had made considerable effort in this direction he said to me substantially as follows3 ,these ,indians have made more honest efforts to pay these debts than the whites have1 as a whole4 ,as the ,indians have become citizens they have been required to work road taxes among their other duties4 ,the road supervisor said to me3 ,i obtained more satisfactory work out of the ,indians than ,i did out of the white men4 ,the ,indians had often said that the roads were theirs1 and they wanted to use them1 so that they were not losing anything1 even if they worked a little over their time1 and several of them who were over fifty years of age voluntarily gave a day's work or two4 ,while the ,indians by no means always do as ,i wish to have them1 yet these facts are encouraging4 sad experience of ,rev4 ,t4 ,l4 ,riggs1 the superintendent of the missions of the ,association at ,oahe1 ,s4 ,d4 ,the exposure to the blazing sun and cutting winds and excessive cold of the ,dakota winters has produced acute inflammation of the eyes1 so that ,mr4 ,riggs is entirely blind4 ,we trust this is only temporary1 but the pain and confinement in a dark room1 and necessary retirement from the active work which ,supt4 ,riggs so energetically carries on1 are a painful trial1 and will awaken the sympathy of all our readers4 ,a sad affliction has also befallen our honored missionary1 ,dr4 ,a4 ,l4 ,riggs1 and his family1 of ,santee1 ,neb4 ,their little grandson1 the child of the missionary daughter in ,china1 has recently died of small-pox under very painful circumstances4 ,the entire family in ,china had this disease1 but at last accounts all but the little child were recovering4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,grand ,,view1 ,,tenn4 ,,by ,,secretary ,,ryder4 ,i reached ,pleasant ,hill last ,saturday1 driving from ,grand ,view4 ,it is of ,grand ,view that ,i want to report first4 ,they are in the best condition that ,i have ever seen4 ,the teachers are doing well1 and the new pastor has taken hold most earnestly and successfully4 ,no one can question the bringing in of the mountain people1 both in church and school4 ,more than two-thirds of the pupils are of native families1 and the native people are filling the church4 ,mr4 ,dorman1 the new pastor1 has put the second service into the evening again1 so as to get more of the mountain folk1 and he succeeds4 ,it was a grand thing to get him1 coming with so good an education and devoted spirit4 ,the people are feeling happier than for years1 and cooperating cordially4 ,the institute is full4 ,they cannot get on without more room4 ,in the primary grade they enroll sixty-nine1 and have seats for twenty-eight4 ,the attendance is fairly well up to the enrollment and they absolutely cannot get on long this way4 ,it is a splendid work4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association has reason to be proud of it1 but it seems imperative to have more room4 ,the work all over this portion of the mountains is thoroughly encouraging4 99 99 beautifully illustrated1 as the following incident will show4 ,when ,i began preaching there the neighborhood was in a universal state of ferment4 ,fussings1 fightings1 hard feelings between neighbors were everywhere2 and between denominations most bitter prejudice and cruel jealousies4 ,there were men there1 close neighbors and kinsfolk1 who had not spoken to each other for three years4 ,some were so angry with each other that they were fighting occasionally and trying to kill each other4 ,they came to church with their pistols in their pockets to shoot each other1 and ,i expected that we might have war in the church yard at any time and men killed4 ,but while they held their thumbs on their pistol hammers ,i wielded the hammer of ,god's word with unrelenting force4 ,while they were getting ready to fire revolvers ,i was firing red hot gospel shot into them with deadly effect4 ,their hard hearts softened1 they weakened1 they fell before the sword of the ,spirit4 ,strong men broke down and wept like children4 ,grasping each other by the hand1 embracing each other in their arms amidst a flood of tears1 they confessed to each other their faults1 and begged pardon and prayed and shouted as ,i never saw men do before in my life4 ,hostile enemies were made happy friends1 would-be murderers were converted to ,god1 hard feelings among neighbors were swept away1 denominational prejudice was forgotten1 and brotherly love and ,christian peace reigned supreme4 ,and besides this some twenty-five precious souls were saved2 among them an old grandmother was brought to ,jesus4 ,and still the good work goes on4 ,praise the ,lord for ,his wonderful love and for ,his mighty power which ,he has manifested in the salvation of precious souls4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,poor ,,helping ,,the ,,poorest4 ,a ,charming ,picture of ,self-,sacrifice4 ,,professor ,f4 ,t4 ,,waters4 ,the extreme poverty among many of the colored people of ,wilmington1 ,n4 ,c41 led me to think that there would be many families that would have no ,christmas gifts unless given by those who could spare1 even from their scant living1 a portion to be given to those wholly destitute4 ,accordingly ,i invited the children in all the rooms in ,gregory ,institute to bring such offerings as they were willing to make1 to be afterward distributed to those who otherwise would have no ,christmas and were without the necessities of life even4 ,the idea seemed to meet with general approval among teachers and pupils4 ,friday1 the last day before the ,christmas vacation1 was appointed to bring in the gifts1 and the amount contributed wholly exceeded our most extravagant hopes4 ,shortly after #h o'clock the school children began to arrive laden with gifts1 consisting of almost every imaginable article that could be used4 ,some brought a sweet potato--always the largest they could find--others a pound of sugar1 rice1 flour1 bacon1 pork1 beans1 peas1 corn meal1 cabbages1 turnips1 tea1 coffee1 matches1 apples1 oranges1 grits1 and if there are any other things to be found among eatables ,i think ,i can produce them from the packages now deposited in the sewing room4 ,besides this quite a quantity of wood was brought1 and a good supply--several bundles1 at least--of fat pine for lighters1 and considerable clothing4 ,one special gift ,i must mention4 ,it was from a little girl in the primary class4 ,the girl is about eleven or twelve years old1 and very poor4 ,she worked all last summer and saved her money to pay her tuition in our school this year1 and1 as ,i have learned1 had secured nearly enough to pay her tuition during the year4 ,but1 alas1 poor little ,mary4 ,for some reason1 probably to get the food necessary to live1 her mother was obliged to take her hard earned and slowly accumulated money1 and before school began she found that what she had so long hoped and planned for she could not realize4 ,however1 she did not give up her cherished plan of coming to school1 but worked away1 got her some clothes1 and about the first of ,november presented herself as wishing to come to school4 ,she brought all the money she had left1 ten cents1 and said if ,i would only let her come she was sure she could pay the rest before long4 ,i kept track of her and found from her teacher that the poor girl could not obtain anything further for her tuition1 but that she was a very among the plantations4 ,the methods of these churches vary as widely as their location4 ,some of them take advantage of institutional methods of church work in all their various forms of ,christian service4 ,many churches which do not undertake so large a distribution of effort still have their circles of ,king's ,sons and ,daughters1 missionary societies1 and1 almost everywhere1 their ,christian ,endeavor ,societies4 ,many of the smaller churches have day schools closely associated with the congregation1 sometimes under the conduct of the pastor or his wife1 or both4 ,illustration3 ,,howard ,,chapel ,,and ,,parsonage4 ,among our more prominent churches is the ,howard ,chapel1 of ,nashville1 ,tenn41 a picture of which1 with the new parsonage1 is found on this page4 ,this church is located on the original site of ,fisk ,university1 and was formerly the chapel of the ,university4 ,the building is a commodious brick structure4 ,the church has had many fluctuations in its rapidly grown4 ,all the various forms of ,christian activity are thoroughly organized1 and the pastor has commended himself not only to the members of the church and congregation1 but to the residents of all that portion of the city4 ,lately the congregation took up the question of affording their pastor a parsonage1 and have built a neat and comfortable structure at the side of the church1 which is an interesting indication of their ,christian consecration that the members of this mission church were so desirous to take hold themselves of mission work among those of their people still less
