,states of the ,south1 normal and graded schools in nearly all the large cities1 and parochial schools connected with many of the churches4 ,the industrial feature of these schools will appear most conspicuously in the details given4 ,in the account of the larger schools1 ,fisk ,university1 ,talladega ,college1 ,tougaloo ,university1 ,straight ,university and ,tillotson ,institute1 ,austin1 ,texas1 we give but in part the full extent of the plan originally laid down by the ,association1 for it does not include ,hampton ,institute1 ,atlanta ,university and ,berea ,college1 children of the ,association which have set up and are conducting housekeeping on their own account4 ,the origin of ,hampton ,institute was in that first freedmen's school at ,fortress ,monroe1 enlarged year by year1 and at length falling under the sagacious eye of ,gen4 ,armstrong1 it opened to him in almost prophetic vision what his great genius and untiring industry brought to full consummation4 ,nor did the ,american ,missionary ,association send this child forth empty-handed4 ,it turned over to its use the one hundred and twenty-five acres of beautiful land1 with its buildings1 permanent and transient1 on which the wonderful plant is now established4 ,atlanta ,university was founded by the ,association1 and under the wise leadership of ,president ,ware1 and the steady support of the ,association for many years1 it at length reached a condition of independence and self-support4 ,berea ,college1 founded by the intrepid ,john ,g4 ,fee1 a missionary of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 owned by its own ,board of ,trustees from the first1 was for many years assisted by the generous contributions of the ,association4 ,these three institutions1 though independent of the ,association and not under its care or support1 if added to the list already given of our higher schools1 will show a line of educational lighthouses stretching from the ,atlantic to the ,gulf and thence into the heart of ,texas4 ,such was the original plan of the ,association1 and such has been the remarkably successful result4 ,but the work of the ,association is not confined to the ,negro race4 ,in the mountains of the ,south it touches with the wand of ,christian education the noble ,highlanders of ,america with their proud achievements and yet with their long-neglected education1 needing the inspiring uplift of the school and cultured church4 ,to these influences they yield a most hearty response1 and no brighter reports will be found than from these mountain regions4 ,the ,indians have from the outset been the subjects of our watchful care1 and with some variation in their activity1 the services among them have brought forth some of the brightest results4 ,revivals during the past year of greater power than any reported from any other part of the field were experienced in these ,indian churches4 ,the ,chinese work on the ,pacific ,coast1 under the admirable leadership of ,dr4 ,pond1 has made steady progress in the conversion of souls here and in carrying the gospel to ,china4 ,the mission in ,alaska1 brought to so sudden and terrible a close by the murder of ,mr4 ,thornton1 is expected to be opened again this summer by the return of ,mr4 and ,mrs4 ,lopp to ,cape ,prince of ,wales4 ,with their knowledge of the language and of the people1 and with the advantages of their past experience1 we hope the mission will enter upon a new and much more successful life than heretofore4 ,we invite the friends of the ,association to study this work in its variety and extent4 ,we make no comparisons1 but surely this work touches the sympathies of the patriot and the ,christian1 and calls for a steady and abundant support4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,vacation4 ,we congratulate our teachers who are now returning from the ,south on the vacation that awaits them in the hills and on the seashores of the ,north4 ,they have had the unbroken toil of eight or ten months in the ,south1 far from their homes and friends1 finding little companionship except with the pupils and their parents1 sometimes ostracized and scorned by the whites--and yet not always--for we rejoice to say that there are many localities in the ,south where the work of our teachers is appreciated and where they are themselves treated with ,christian courtesy by the whites4 ,we need not ask their friends at the ,north to welcome these returned workers with that kindness that is restful1 but we do ask that the facts they reveal in regard to the ,south may be heard and heeded4 ,there is no set of witnesses more competent to tell of the actual situation at the ,south1 its home life1 its industries1 its struggle with difficulties1 than these same teachers4 ,sometimes the teachers have been there but a short time and their labors may have been confined to one locality1 but in that narrow range their observations among the colored people have been most minute4 ,they have watched the operations of the pupils closely from day to day1 and have been brought constantly in contact with the people in their cabins1 in their work1 and in their trials4 ,but many of the teachers have been there for years and in different locations1 and their representation of the state of affairs is as reliable as any that can be found from any source whatever4 ,if the observations and experiences of this corps of teachers could be set forth1 they would furnish1 with all its lights and shades1 the most accurate picture that could be presented of the state of affairs in the ,south4 ,pastors and churches would do well to give these returned teachers an opportunity to present in the prayer-meeting and elsewhere the exact facts as they have found them in the ,south4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,mr4 ,,wharton1 ,,the ,,evangelist4 ,under the head of ,church ,work will be found in these pages a sketch of the work of an evangelist in our churches during the past year1 written by himself4 ,that evangelist is so unselfish and consecrated to his work1 and has been so long and so successfully employed in it that we are sure our readers will be glad to have some account of the man himself4 ,mr4 ,james ,wharton is an ,englishman1 resident at ,barrow-in-,furness1 near to ,furness ,abbey and the ,english lakes4 ,he is not an ordained minister1 but a lay preacher1 as ,mr4 ,moody is4 ,he accepts no salary for his services1 and consents to receive only the amount of his traveling expenses4 ,for over twenty years he has been thus engaged1 residing at his home in the summer but busy in gospel work1 and in the winters traveling to distant places4 ,his labors have been in ,england1 ,ireland1 ,scotland1 the ,shetland ,islands1 ,wales1 ,canada1 ,spain and ,america4 ,during these ministrations he has traveled #hh1jjj miles1 and has made eleven trips to ,america4 ,in #ahgf1 he learned of the condition of the emancipated slaves of this country1 and entered into correspondence with this ,association with reference to work here4 ,he has spent eleven years here1 and has evinced great wisdom1 good judgment and1 as will be seen by the report of his work this past year1 has had great success4 ,he was the first man to attempt an open-air service in ,new ,orleans after the war4 ,he stood on a cotton bale at the foot of ,canal ,st41 and continued the service for several weeks1 although the white people threatened to shoot him4 ,in his labors among the blacks of the ,south1 he strikes the happy medium between undue excitement and cold formalism4 ,as he returns from year to year1 he rejoices to find the converts of earlier years holding on their way with faith and a stable ,christian life4 ,our readers will be interested to read the sketch which ,mr4 ,wharton gives of his labors4 99 99 99 99 99 now a professing ,christian1 and at the farewell prayer-meeting he expressed the earnest desire soon to become one4 ,in the new ,theological ,department nine have been enrolled4 ,the prospect for next year is that this feature of the work will be largely developed4 ,the new ,college ,preparatory ,department has made a most successful beginning1 seven having been enrolled and having done good work4 ,the past year has also been notable in the industrial departments4 ,great attention has always been given to these1 though in the girls' industries1 especially1 the facilities have been exceedingly inadequate4 ,during the year1 ,berkshire ,cottage1 the girls' industrial building1 has been completed1 and in it are pleasant accommodations for the needlework and cooking classes4 ,seventy girls have had class instruction throughout the year in these branches4 ,in ,berkshire ,cottage is also carried on the work for which the building was specially designed--the model housekeeping4 ,when the rooms are all furnished eight girls at a time1 in two sets of four1 will keep house for two months at a time1 gaining a practical knowledge of household economies4 ,this year sixteen girls have had this most important training1 the last four in the new cottage4 ,of this four1 three were in the graduating ,normal class4 ,the exhibits of the cooking and sewing classes at ,commencement1 consisting of cakes1 biscuits1 confectionery1 etc41 and a great variety of well made and useful garments1 were highly praised1 and a large number sold to visitors4 ,few schools have better facilities for the practical and most important work of developing homemakers than has ,tougaloo4 ,upon the trained young women who can make good homes depends very largely the future of the ,negro race4 ,,agriculture4 ,from the earliest history of the school there has been attention paid to agriculture1 and each year sees development in the acreage under cultivation and the quantity of produce raised4 ,this year nearly all the fresh meat and the milk1 sweet potatoes1 molasses1 vegetables1 etc41 needed by the large boarding department1 have been raised on the farm1 and some things have been marketed1 besides the large amount of corn and hay needed upon so large a plantation4 ,the need of a special agricultural building1 to cost about #b1jjj1 in which those students who work upon the farm can live1 and where they may have special class instruction1 is greatly needed4 ,,manual ,,training4 ,the ,manual ,training ,department has also this year received new impetus4 ,it includes work in wood and iron1 and industrial drawing4 ,the methods are those of the most modern and most approved schools for manual training4 ,sixty boys have had the woodworking1 and twenty the forging4 ,industrial drawing has been the new feature of the year4 ,there are twenty new and complete sets of drawing tools4 ,for the lower grades there is elementary or one view drawing1 and in the normal grades both boys and girls have advanced work that includes the fundamentals of machine and architectural drawing4 ,orthographic and isometric projection are taught4 ,the exhibit of this drawing work was remarkably fine1 and elicited hearty commendation4 ,its utility was clearly recognized when on the walls were seen drawings of house framings1 house plans1 architectural and building details1 etc4 ,it should be said that the work along industrial lines is neither optional nor elective1 but that it is a part of the regular class-work of the school as much as grammar or arithmetic4 ,another feature has been the opening up of the ,tougaloo ,university ,addition to ,tougaloo4 ,about one hundred and twenty acres of university land have been surveyed and plotted off into home lots of about five acres each1 to be sold to former students of the school and to others who desire to educate their children at ,tougaloo4 ,already several lots have been taken and homes built1 and in a few years there will be quite a little educational community4 ,,commencement ,,exercises4 ,the ,commencement exercises1 ,may #bjth-#bc;d1 passed off pleasantly4 ,on ,sunday1 ,president ,woodworth's baccalaureate was from the text1 ,he endured as seeing him who is invisible4 ,the farewell prayer-meeting in the evening1 conducted by ,miss ,page1 valedictorian of the graduating class1 was peculiarly rich and helpful in its reminiscences1 forecastings and inspirations4 ,all the graduates go out as earnest ,christians4 ,the boys' gymnastic exhibition on ,monday evening drew a very interested audience1 and the eighth grade exercises on ,tuesday morning were admirable4 ,the alumni meeting was the largest that has ever been held1 one-third of the alumni having been in attendance4 ,two notable papers were read1 one by ,miss ,jessie ,rhone1 of '#hd1 on1 ,it is better beyond1 and one by ,mr4 ,w4 ,h4 ,lanier1 '#ha1 on1 ,the conduct to be pursued by the educated colored young people in gaining success4 ,both were hopeful and helpful4 ,mr4 ,lanier's relation of his experience as teacher in one of the most difficult towns of the ,state1 where former teachers had been run off and the school closed by the whites1 and of the way in which he had so conducted himself that men whose only greeting at first was1 ,howdy1 boy1 now recognize him cordially with1 ,how do you do1 professor1 was a most admirable illustration of how tact and good sense will help to break down barriers4 ,the ,commencement concert on ,tuesday evening drew a very large crowd4 ,every seat was occupied and all standing room1 and it was clearly shown that the chapel at ,tougaloo is all too small4 ,over one hundred and fifty of the audience of about six hundred were white4 ,better chorus work is not often heard4 ,tougaloo is fortunate not only in having had competent music teachers1 but in having in ,prof4 ,hill1 ,dean of the ,normal ,department1 a most capable musician4 ,for the first time in years ,commencement day was showery1 but a large audience assembled to see the normal graduation4 ,seven graduated1 and their orations and essays were highly creditable4 ,the annual address was given by ,rev4 ,b4 ,f4 ,ousley1 now professor in the ,alcorn ,agricultural and ,mechanical ,college at ,rodney1 ,miss41 the ,state institution for colored young men1 and formerly a missionary of the ,american ,board in ,south ,africa4 ,it was a clear1 thoughtful1 and in every way admirable presentation of the qualifications of ,the ,man for the ,age4 ,brief impromptu addresses were made by ,rev4 ,s4 ,p4 ,smith1 ,american ,missionary ,association pastor in ,jackson1 ,mr4 ,w4 ,h4 ,lanier1 of '#ha1 ,major ,millsaps1 one of the leading bankers of the ,state1 ,rev4 ,s4 ,c4 ,mounger1 presiding elder of the ,methodist ,episcopal ,church ,south1 residing at ,jackson1 and ,col4 ,j4 ,l4 ,power1 of the ,jackson ,clarion ,ledger4 ,the last three gentlemen emphasized again and again the fact that the best white sentiment of the ,state is heartily in favor of such work as is done at ,tougaloo1 and in full sympathy with it4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,ballard ,,normal ,,school1 ,,macon1 ,,ga4 ,,prof4 ,f4 ,t4 ,,waters4 ,the ,ballard ,normal ,school1 located at ,macon1 ,ga41 has closed with flattering success in all departments4 ,the work in all the grades reflects much credit on the teachers1 but no work is more marked than that of the industrial department4 ,the display was much more imposing than was thought possible1 the work having been delayed until late in the year2 it seemed at first unwise to try to make any display at all1 but all felt paid for the attempt4 ,in the girls' department we found work of all grades of sewing1 dresses1 waists1 aprons and other articles of wearing apparel1 also darning1 matching1 buttonholes1 quilting1 etc4 ,each article was marked with the name of the girl and grade1 and many were the exclamations of commendation from those who visited the rooms where the display was made4 ,works deserving special mention are buttonholes made by ,martha ,howard of the seventh grade2 patching by ,lulu ,gaston1 and darning by ,gertrude ,williams4 ,the cooking-school1 for lack of money1 was discontinued after three months1 but during that time substantial progress was made1 and there can be no question about the advisability of pushing the industrial work as far as possible the coming year4 ,in the boys' department1 too1 all were surprised to see the articles in display4 ,there were joints of every shape1 all of them showing skill of high order2 there were many useful articles displayed1 such as pen-racks1 pen-trays1 towel-rolls1 hat-racks1 puzzles1 etc4 ,many of the articles were given away by the boys to the friends1 and some of the articles will be exhibited in the ,north to show the class of work done in our schools4 ,as it seems to me1 no branch of work is more important than the industrial1 and great interest is taken in it by the boys4 ,the lack of money has made it necessary to curtail this very important part of our educational work4 ,the work done in the last year leads me to believe that there should be no cutting down in any part of the work of ,ballard school1 which ,i regard as one of the most promising of the many ,american ,missionary ,association schools1 and especially should there be no cutting in either of the industrial departments4 ,more than any one thing1 these people need to be taught the use of time and the saving of money2 this1 with the intellectual and moral training in our schools1 will make full grown men and women4 read to the students1 who returned a hearty vote of thanks for the draft for five dollars therein contained for a clock for our chapel1 also for the promise of a scholarship for a student next year4 ,then the long line of students repaired to their respective class-rooms1 followed by the friends who came to listen to their oral examinations4 ,the latter were in all grades1 from the seniors who replied to questions in ,latin1 mathematics1 etc41 to the tiny tots in room ,no4 #a4 ,,industrial ,,work4 ,a conspicuous feature in the day's programme was the exhibition of articles made in the sewing department4 ,hundreds of specimens were effectively displayed against the walls of the large office4 ,there were nicely made garments1 bright patchwork quilts1 dressed dolls illustrating hygienic styles of dress1 buttonhole work and neat patches4 ,much of the work done won warm commendation from the visitors present1 and that by the boys of the third grade received a full share of praise4 ,in many cases it was difficult to believe that the specimens of work done in ,may were wrought by the same pairs of hands as the great1 uncouth stitches made on the companion pieces furnished in ,january4 ,yet each pupil has had but two hours' instruction a week4 ,we hope during the coming year to enlarge and improve the department4 ,extending our sincere thanks to the kind friends who have sent us supplies for the sewing1 we would1 by the way1 very modestly suggest that a good sewing machine is needed here1 and if one should be forthcoming from the beneficent ones who have an especial interest in this most important branch of education1 we should indeed hail its advent with fervent gratitude4 ,tuesday noon found us with our friends again gathered in the chapel1 where prizes were awarded to those who had made the most improvement in sewing4 ,one little girl had said to her sewing teacher3 ,oh1 if ,i can only get a prize for sewing1 just a card1 or anything1 to show my mother that ,i am improving1 and that she is getting something in return for the dollar she pays for my tuition6 ,from the nice books1 etc41 sent us in boxes by ,northern friends1 we distributed our prizes4 ,to this little girl we were glad to give something1 which rejoiced her heart1 and the gleaming eyes of several other pupils--notably those of the boys of the third grade--as they came forward for the coveted honor1 was a pleasant sight4 ,before dismissal1 the ,rev4 ,l4 ,b4 ,maxwell gave us a bright and helpful little talk4 ,tuesday night1 in the freshly decorated and densely crowded chapel1 was given an exhibition by members of all grades of the school4 ,the songs1 recitations1 readings1 gymnastics and tableaux elicited much delighted applause4 ,thursday morning the school assembled to listen to the reading of promotions4 ,one of the pleasantest memories of ,beach ,institute which the workers there carried away to their vacation was that of the sight of the eager yet self-controlled company of students1 which1 holding its breath to listen1 yet1 when it heard1 spent no breath in murmurs of delight or of disappointment4 ,only the graver1 self-reproachful tastefully tied with the class colors--nile green and cream white4 ,all showed effectively against a soft background of white overlaid with festoonings of the long gray moss4 ,our eight graduates1 seven girls and one stalwart youth1 a rugged young oak in the midst of roses1 rendered their parts in spicy essays1 humorous reading1 graceful and spirited recitations and earnest oration in a manner which won due signals of appreciation4 ,the choruses1 etc41 were sung in good style1 the diplomas were given1 the successful contestant for the scholarship from the new tenth grade was announced1 the class song was sung1 and then ,richard ,r4 ,wright1 who in his boyhood sent to ,northern friends the message1 ,tell them we are rising1 and who is now ,president of the ,georgia ,state ,agricultural ,college for ,colored ,youth1 followed with an address replete with that which might instruct and enthuse this class of #ahid1 which was about to embark in boats in which they were to ,row1 not ,drift4 ,as one listened to this address1 again what an inspiring scene met the eye--the gifted1 cultured speaker1 his very life an inspiration1 the semicircle of earnest1 hopeful young graduates1 the chapel and adjoining rooms crowded with an audience whose appearance betokened education and refinement1 among whom were doctors of divinity1 editors and other professional men4 ,one could but only exclaim1 ,within these thirty years1 verily1 ',what hath ,god wrought6' ,oh1 that ,american ,christians could be brought to such a sense of the tremendous needs of this ,negro race at the ,south1 that through myriad channels the needed supplies would flow1 to continue and enlarge this1 the ,master's own blessed work4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,allen ,,normal ,,school1 ,,thomasville1 ,,ga4 ,,miss ,k4 ,b4 ,,dowd4 ,for this event we had made great preparations4 ,for weeks practicing had been going on vigorously1 despite regular lessons and extreme warm weather4 ,the class to graduate consisted of four members1 and we felt anxious that as residents of ,thomasville they should do themselves credit1 and grandly did they rise to meet our expectations4 ,commencement exercises began ,sunday evening with the baccalaureate sermon preached by our pastor1 ,rev4 ,c4 ,f4 ,sargent4 ,it was listened to by a full house1 composed of the best people among the colored race of the city4 ,tuesday at #h ,p4,m4 the school marched to the school-building to find it already crowded to its utmost capacity1 there being not standing room then4 ,half an hour later tiers of eager faces were peering through the open windows4 ,hack-loads came from the town and adjoining towns1 only to find entrance impossible4 ,some half a dozen of the white citizens stood upon boards at the rear of the building through the two hours' programme1 and declared they enjoyed it very much4 ,the concert lasted an hour and was followed by gymnastic drills given by the boarding pupils4 ,their wielding of the heavy dumbbells elicited hearty applause4 ,with no breaks they went through with marching1 stepping movements1 wand-drills and the anvil chorus1 the exercises closing with a full chorus1 ,the ,song of the ,sea1 by ,veazie4 ,our only regret was that so many must be turned away4 ,between the concert and the gymnastic drills1 ,miss ,dickerman's tiny ones entertained the company with motion songs1 recitations and solos1 showing the careful drill and thorough work of the year4 ,wednesday was a busy day indeed1 for the church had to be trimmed for the great event1 namely1 the graduating exercises4 ,long folds of blue and yellow1 the class colors1 hung from the highest point in the ceiling over the pulpit to the windows on either side4 ,directly in the center1 in large gold letters1 was the class motto ,forward4 ,huge bouquets of the most exquisite roses1 sent in by friends and pupils1 were everywhere4 ,a bank of ferns in front of the platform completed the decorations4 ,just before the time to go to the church a heavy thunder shower came up and the prospect for the evening was dubious indeed1 but by eight there was nothing more than clouds and mud to trouble us4 ,upon reaching the church we found it full1 despite the rain1 and among the audience were the editor of the city paper and one of the leading physicians4 ,prayer was offered by one of the colored ministers of the city1 followed by the ,te ,deum ,laudamus1 by the school4 ,the essays ,joan of ,arc1 ,evangeline1 ,england's ,growth in ,free ,government1 and ,h4 ,h41 were well read and well received4 ,comment was made by the doctor upon the correct pronunciation of the class1 a remark being made to the effect that it was superior to the work done in their own schools4 ,there were no class honors1 for all had worked faithfully and well4 ,the speaker of the evening was ,t4 ,s4 ,inborden1 of the ,albany high school1 a graduate of ,fisk ,university4 ,his address was an earnest appeal for growth4 ,the diplomas were presented by ,rev4 ,c4 ,f4 ,sargent4 ,his words to each member of the class were most appropriate and heartfelt4 ,the ,good-night song was followed by the benediction and that by the hearty congratulations and good wishes great delight of a good number of visiting patrons and friends4 ,it was a thorough test1 and was well met by the various classes from primary to normal1 and gave evidence of earnest work and real regular anniversary4 ,the exercises consisted of declamations by a number of young men1 and recitations by young women1 interspersed with music by a choir selected from the school4 ,although my boys and girls wear dark skins and come from the rice field and turpentine swamp1 and their native speech is sometimes little better than a jargon1 still ,i would not have hesitated to put them beside boys and girls coming from much more favorable surroundings4 ,our music1 too1 rendered by young people whose previous practice1 for the most part1 extended no farther than ,gospel hymns or plantation melodies1 could not have failed to convince one of careful drill and earnest effort1 and was a very pleasurable part of the day's programme4 ,the ,county ,superintendent of schools was with us through the whole of ,thursday1 and expressed his keen appreciation of the work done4 ,while these two days gave evidence of solid work accomplished1 it is only by daily contact during the entire year that 7,payne7 ,institute1 the ,reformed ,presbyterian 7,knox7 ,academy1 the ,baptist ,university1 ,burrell ,school1 and the public school supported by the city1 the latter just taking possession of a commodious brick building2 so we may truly say that the youth of the despised race now have an upward look4 ,and yet not one-half of the colored children of ,selma are even enrolled1 much less regular attendants at school4 ,these people are fond of public exercises1 and give large audiences and interested attention that seem to know no diminution1 even when some twenty closing exercises of the different grades occur1 as within the past ten days4 ,burrell came in for her share1 beginning with the annual sermon by the principal on the #bjth of ,may1 and offering two evening programmes on the #bdth and #beth in the ,congregational ,church1 each well patronized1 the last named securing an especially full house4 ,maud ,muller and the ,songs of ,seven were given with tableaux1 while ,carleton's ,first ,settler's ,story and the ,tramp ,story showed that careful training had been given in elocutionary lines4 ,the primary and intermediate grades presented the customary variation of recitations1 dialogues and songs4 ,one and all did well2 the church was tastefully decorated1 our twenty-eight foot flag having a prominent place2 the patrons and friends of ,burrell were loud in her praise1 and the teachers on the evening of their departure were given a banquet by a surprise party at the ,home4 ,,industries4 ,one feature of the programmes at the church1 calling attention to some work of ,burrell not done at these other schools1 illustrating shop1 sewing and drawing1 were interesting for their own sake2 first a presentation of models executed at our shop1 then a tableau of the boys having on their aprons and caps and tools in hand2 then the girls of the fourth and fifth grades grouped with different articles of sewing about the sewing teacher1 who stood directing one of the number at work upon the new sewing-machine4 ,the drawings exhibited were two large1 finely executed crayons that won the admiration of all4 ,these industries1 for which over #ej had been solicited the past year1 were fully shown at ,burrell ,school building during the week on public days when some fifty patrons favored us with their presence and praise1 former pupils lamenting the lack of these features during their school days4 ,,bible ,,study4 ,better than all special attractions1 than the general interest in texts and teachers1 has been the marked interest in ,bible study and evident conversion of a number of our pupils whose lives show a changed purpose4 ,the ,endeavor ,society has had a part in this1 and each of the last meetings seemed to be better than the others1 so that it is hoped that the organization may be maintained through the summer4 ,it was the prayer of a father in ,israel here1 ,turn loose thy ,spirit upon us1 for sinners are running wild to hell2 uphold our the true idea1 however strangely it is phrased2 but the words of our pupils sometimes need translating1 and they continually interest even a teacher of long-standing among them4 ,only recently the writer has come upon these expressions3 ,he called me out of my name1 meaning that the objector had been called a fool1 perhaps2 and ,i've done spoiled it out1 the excuse of one who had erased his been a prosperous one4 ,owing to straitened means and hard times1 the enrollment has been a little less than last year2 but in the grade of scholarship there has been a distinct advance4 ,many pleasant incidents have occurred1 notably the ,christmas festival4 ,a ,united ,states flag1 nine feet by fifteen1 presented to the school at ,christmas1 was hoisted over the building ,february #bb;d1 with great enthusiasm4 ,appropriate exercises1 including such patriotic songs as ,the ,star ,spangled ,banner1 ,the ,red1 ,white and ,blue1 ,the ,battle ,hymn of the ,republic1 gave added spirit to the occasion4 ,of a hundred pupils not one has died or been seriously sick during the year--a fact that speaks much for the sanitary condition of the school4 ,the concluding exercises1 beginning with our annual picnic1 ,may #aith1 have all been interesting4 ,the literary societies have done themselves much credit4 ,the closing day1 ,may #cjth1 brought together from near and far an assembly of all sorts and conditions1 of every hue from fairest blonde to ebony1 which completely filled the spacious chapel4 ,the oral reviews or examinations1 the music1 both vocal and instrumental1 were highly appreciated2 while the calisthenics showed admirable drill4 ,in the evening came more music1 essays1 recitations and the like1 to the great enjoyment of a crowded audience4 ,the exhibit made by the industrial department was extremely gratifying4 ,many specimens of plain sewing1 neatly and strongly done1 showed that the girls have been making progress in the practical arts of the house-keeper and home-maker2 while abundant samples of fancy needlework displayed not only rare deftness of hand1 but an artistic taste as well4 ,pretty quilts1 elegant bed-spreads1 handkerchiefs of drawn work1 tasty tray-cloths1 embroidered table-covers1 doilies1 aprons1 neckties1 etc41 were displayed in profusion4 ,the boys' exhibit of wood-work was no less gratifying4 ,their numerous picture-frames and book-shelves1 of tasteful designs and handsome workmanship1 would in many cases have done no discredit to expert craftsmen2 while many articles by the smaller boys gave proof that hand1 eye and judgment were being trained in an admirable way4 ,the workshop is also an excellent school of applied arithmetic1 as well as of practical handicraft4 ,free-hand1 and some surprisingly good mechanical drawings were exhibited2 also plain1 colored and relief maps1 illustrating the geography of our own and other lands4 ,the botanical work exhibited was worthy of all praise4 ,fifty varieties of flowers1 comprising nearly all the most important orders1 have been examined and classified1 and half as many handsomely mounted4 ,this young school is doing a work of inestimable value4 ,on the very spot1 where less than a generation ago gangs of slaves toiled under the overseer's lash1 and within rifle-shot of the plantation whipping-post1 their children are now developing into worthy citizenship2 and youth1 both white and colored1 are growing up into enlightened ,christian manhood and womanhood4 ,many of our students are poor--very poor--and are working out their salvation by efforts none the less pathetic because so bravely and cheerfully made4 ,the truest heroism is unconscious4 ,touching stories could be easily told4 ,those who struggle so courageously and perseveringly for an education do not need to be pitied1 but they need to be aided and encouraged4 ,may the ,lord inspire those who can to hold out a helping hand and so fulfill their own prayer1 ,thy ,kingdom with marked ability1 and the audience was deeply moved4 ,on ,monday our school-rooms were visited by many friends1 and our ex-graduates from ,tougaloo were welcomed home4 ,the students' sociable at night was a pleasant affair1 and gave us a chance to plan with our scholars about their work this summer4 ,all are eager for work that they may enter school in the fall2 all seem ready to do whatever they can find to do4 ,the most spiritual feature of our closing exercises was on ,tuesday morning1 when at the opening hour the house was filled with friends to unite in a ,congregational love-feast1 as they called it4 ,we had several clergymen and teachers1 and one lawyer and a host of friends to cheer us with their words1 or to aid us in our service of song and prayer4 ,one friend told of a wealthy colored man who had pledged to give three thousand dollars to the ,american ,missionary ,association to carry on these ,christian schools1 although he himself is not a ,christian4 ,may his example incite others to come to our help4 ,after two hours of pleasant interchange of good fellowship we all went to the church1 where the industrial work was on exhibition4 ,it was arranged with great artistic effect4 ,each room had its display by itself in miniature booths constructed out of the finished sewing4 ,the primary rooms had festoons of blockwork1 and under an awning made from a bright patchwork quilt1 made by them1 hung their dainty pockets1 tidies1 scarfs1 etc41 quaintly outlined in bright needlework4 ,there were scores of buttonholes arranged in a wheel pattern1 and they were beautifully done1 and were admired by all4 ,there were three entire quilts1 twenty-nine garments of various kinds1 and twenty-five neatly hemstitched handkerchiefs1 besides a large quantity of articles for home decoration4 ,perhaps the exhibit which attracted most attention was the young men's department4 ,there were fourteen handkerchiefs and eight ,windsor ties hemstitched by the young men1 and hardly any of them had ever used a needle1 yet their dainty work was pronounced equal1 if not superior1 to that of the young ladies4 ,there were in all four hundred and sixty-three articles made1 some from old material1 some from scraps and some from new cloth4 ,before the winter term the young girls had cut and prepared their own sewing4 ,,graduating ,,exercises4 ,at eight o'clock in the evening the house was filled to overflowing with people who wished to witness the graduation of twelve young persons1 or to hear the various exercises from the younger children1 and to listen to our well rendered music4 ,the exercises were all excellent1 although they were greatly marred by the vast audience on so warm a night4 ,there were no failures1 but fine delivery and appearance4 ,the mayor of the city was pleased to pronounce it grand4 ,and so closed our school year1 but the half has not been told if we omit to tell of the spiritual growth4 ,twenty-four in our school have united with our church1 almost as many more with other denominations1 and some have now gone to their own homes1 and will there confess what ,christ has done for them this year4 ,it has been a beautiful year4 ,we can but feel that ,god has been with us4 ,the flowers and blackboard decorations were very attractive1 and our dear old flag draping the entire wall behind the platform added not a little to the attractiveness of our rooms4 ,on ,sunday the sadness of parting was accentuated1 and it was from a full heart each one gave the ,y4 ,p4 ,s4 ,c4 ,e4 benediction of ,the ,lord watch between thee and ,view ,normal ,institute were held last night4 ,this excellent school is situated on the eastern brow of ,walden's ,ridge1 fifty-five miles north from ,chattanooga4 ,it overlooks a view of fertile valley below1 and beyond a vast expanse of numberless wooded hills with glimpses of the ,tennessee river winding between1 while on the horizon looms the dim1 majestic form of the ,smoky ,range4 ,it is an institution of the ,american ,missionary ,association 7,congregational71 and is equal to many of our lesser colleges4 ,mathematics is carried through trigonometry and surveying4 ,latin and music are taught1 also1 as well as the ordinary studies of the common and high schools4 ,above one hundred and fifty pupils1 from a dozen different ,states1 were on the roll of the past term4 ,the teachers are of the highest order and their efficiency was emphatically demonstrated by the splendid work of last night's exercises4 ,while there was1 of course1 a marked difference in the oratorical powers of the young speakers1 yet the uniformly high moral and intellectual tone of the admirably composed essays was a feature gratifying indeed to the numerous fathers and mothers present4 ,there were present men of learning1 teachers and preachers from surrounding cities1 whose words of frank encomium upon the exercises emphasized their excellence4 ,the visitors crowded the spacious hall to its utmost capacity and a large overflow meeting looked in through the windows4 99 99 99 99 99 ,church ,work4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,evangelist ,,at ,,work4 ,,mr4 ,,james ,,wharton4 ,it has again been my privilege to spend the winter in the ,south in the interests of the colored population under the auspices of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 and in each section of the country visited ,i am glad to record a marked change for the better both morally and spiritually in advance of twenty years ago1 and this ,i consider is due in a great measure to the influence and instrumentality of the ,congregational churches and schools in connection with them4 ,the untold good that is being done by the various institutions under the ,american ,missionary ,association will never be known this side of eternity1 and wherever ,i have gone ,i have found the people speaking in the highest terms of praise of the efforts which are being put forth to help raise the standard already attained4 ,during the last winter ,i have visited and held revival services at ,dudley and ,raleigh1 ,n4 ,c42 ,hampton1 ,va42 ,howard ,university1 ,washington1 ,d4 ,c42 ,oaks and ,hillsboro1 ,n4 ,c42 ,athens and ,thomasville1 ,ga42 ,high ,point1 ,n4 ,c42 and at each place the ministers and teachers of the schools have worked admirably1 with the result that the churches have been quickened and scores of the most promising young people of both sexes from different parts of the ,states have been led to trust in ,jesus as their ,saviour and to commence a new life for ,him4 ,it has been a great joy to me on returning to places formerly visited to find after years of absence the converts going on still in the good way1 witnessing for ,christ and working for the welfare of others1 and1 in many cases1 settled for life in comfortable frame-built houses where once it was the one-roomed log cabin with its evil influences4 ,in spite of the distress so keenly felt by everyone1 the past year has been one of unusual interest and revival4 ,the old idea1 of visions1 dreams and voices being necessary to a person's assurance of his acceptance of ,god1 seems to be yielding to a more perfect and ,scriptural way3 ,thus saith the ,lord4 ,,washington1 ,d4 ,c4 ,in ,plymouth church1 ,rev4 ,s4 ,brown1 pastor1 protracted meetings were held1 resulting in the lifting heavenward of the members4 ,among the converts was a ,mrs4 ,t41 who had been a seeker for thirty-three years4 ,while listening to an address on ,ex4 xii ,chap4 #ac v41 ,he sprinkled blood1 the light she had been so long looking for began to dawn upon her soul1 and before the address closed she was rejoicing in ,god's wondrous love4 ,she could scarcely keep her seat for joy2 she arose to testify that ,god had saved her that night4 ,her testimony caused considerable rejoicing1 as she was well known to all as a long-time mourner4 ,,howard ,,university4 ,at the invitation of ,dr4 ,rankin1 the ,evangelist and ,pastor ,brown held a ten days' mission1 resulting in some good cases of conversion1 two brothers being among the number1 the sons of a ,methodist minister1 one studying to become a doctor and the other a pharmacist4 ,,hampton1 ,,va4 ,during the week of prayer we felt a deep wave of spiritual blessing sweep over the institution such as had not been realized for years past4 ,quite a number of the students were brought over on the ,lord's side1 including several young ,indian students4 ,,oaks1 ,n4 ,c4 ,meetings were held here for ten days1 and although snow covered the ground several inches thick1 the people attended well1 and every night a large proportion of the congregation was composed of white folks who did not hesitate to worship under the same roof with their colored brethren4 ,,hillsboro1 ,n4 ,c4 ,here the revival commenced in the school4 ,when the ,christian pupils were asked to show hands only about three testified1 but ere the meeting closed a marked change was seen1 for a large number became ,christians during the meeting4 ,as there is no ,congregational church the ,baptists kindly offered their church building for our use1 which from the first was packed to its utmost1 the people standing around the doors and windows unable to get inside1 so eager were they to hear the word preached4 ,several long-time mourners were converted1 including three old grandfathers and two or three grandmothers4 ,people of all classes came in from the country for miles around1 willing to leave their fields and work to attend the services4 ,many of the older inhabitants of the town said that such a revival had not been known since before the war1 for in a few days the converts reached the number of one hundred and sixteen4 ,as a result1 a goodly number were added to the ,sunday-school4 ,a society of ,christian ,endeavor was organized and a weekly prayer-meeting started1 the young converts readily taking part4 ,,athens1 ,,ga4 ,the members took an active part here in helping on the good work4 ,at ,knox ,institute meetings were held for the pupils and a large number professed conversion4 ,at the church three public school teachers were converted1 also the mother of two of them4 ,,macon1 ,,ga4 ,i was rejoiced to find in this city quite a number of young converts who decided for ,christ seven years ago still going on steadily1 many of them now grown up into fine young men and women1 and still seeking to glorify ,god in a consistent life and walk4 ,here one editor of a weekly newspaper came over on business and made his way to the services1 and the first night gave himself to the ,lord1 going home to the town from whence he came to tell his friends what great things the ,lord had done for him4 ,,thomasville1 ,,ga4 ,after the first meeting it was evident the ,lord had something good in store for us4 ,at the close of every succeeding service anxious souls were to be found kneeling at the front seat seeking ,christ1 and great was the joy of all when they saw those whom they were interested in deciding for ,him4 ,every night the young ladies of the boarding department with a part of the congregation formed a large circle outside the church door to sing some of the old-time hymns1 which1 in the stillness of the night under the starry heavens1 and with nearly all the singers dressed in white1 made the scene more a heavenly one than can well be imagined4 ,their sweet voices pealed forth the strains of ,zion1 which on the gentle breeze were wafted to many an ear of those who lived in the neighborhood1 and hearts were touched1 and many drew nigh to listen who never ventured inside the church door4 ,many of the young ladies ere this have gone back to their homes in the country1 others to their summer schools1 and from these services will carry with them the happy influence of the gospel which will in turn reach the ears of those entrusted to their care1 the result of which will be many a sad heart made glad1 and many a dark home brightened1 over town1 looking for a mission-room4 ,we have finally settled on a cottage about a block from where the mission formerly stood4 ,mr4 ,birkensees has a number of cottages there1 which he has concluded to rent to the ,chinamen4 ,we have secured a cottage with six small rooms1 and he is building on a schoolroom in front 7#ah by #bf feet71 with every convenience we want4 ,he is putting an attic above the schoolroom1 which can be used as sleeping-rooms4 ,mr4 ,hall is overseeing the work1 and ,mr4 ,birkensees is having it built to suit me4 ,we hope to go on with the mission work by stored them in ,mrs4 ,tagan's shed4 ,they had many heavy trunks to move1 besides the school furniture4 ,they worked systematically1 displaying no selfishness1 but went right on with the moving without losing their wits4 ,many of their belongings were lost1 their dishes1 stoves1 chairs1 tables1 etc41 which they cannot do without4 ,the ,christian people here have been very kind1 and have shown a great deal of sympathy for our ,chinese brethren since the fire1 and ,i think many will give little things1 such as dishes1 etc41 which will be a great help to them4 ,of course ,i feel very sorry for our mission brethren1 but ,i am glad ,chinatown is in ashes4 ,we were all getting sick from the impure air4 ,some of the boys had been sick for months on account1 ,i think1 of the filth surrounding ,my answer1 which is the purpose of this letter1 will not deal with statistics either of church or of school1 for the best work done among the mountaineers is not recorded in the church books or school curriculums2 it is the work accomplished in the lives of individuals and through them4 ,often these individuals are never known outside their own community4 ,a little over a year ago1 in company with a friend1 ,i went to visit a ,sunday-school in a mountain community way back in the ,ridges4 ,the ,superintendent1 a man whom we had met before at a ,sunday-school convention1 invited us to speak4 ,after the services we went home with him to dinner4 ,his family consisted of a wife and five children4 ,he deplored the fact that they had not better opportunities for education and better church privileges1 so we suggested that1 when the crops were harvested1 he should move with his family to ,c---- to send them to school4 ,the idea pleased ,mr4 ,w----1 and in course of time he came4 ,mrs4 ,w---- entered the school with her children as a regular student1 being in some of the same classes with her little girls4 ,all worked diligently through the winter1 enjoying an intellectual feast1 of which they had hitherto known nothing4 ,it is unnecessary to say that the winter passed too quickly with them1 and the time came for making a new crop all too soon4 ,they left the school reluctantly and returned to the mountain home1 taking with them a spirit of progress1 which will make even a rugged fastness into a blooming garden4 ,last ,sunday we visited the ,sunday-school again1 no longer a small one1 for it enrolls over one hundred and fifty pupils4 ,mr4 ,w---- has also organized a ,saturday class1 at which the youth and grown people of the neighborhood meet after the week's work on the farm1 and learn to read and write and spell4 ,on ,sunday they meet out at #i o'clock in the morning for ,bible study and worship1 and again in the afternoon for sacred song service and
