,publishers of ,evangelical ,literature4 ,,copyright #ahic ,,by ,,fleming ,h4 ,,revell ,,company4 ,,preface4 ,the following brief messages comprise a revision of two addresses1 which originally appeared in the ,south ,african ,pioneer1 the organ of the ,cape ,general ,mission 7,rev4 ,andrew ,murray1 ,pres471 and are published by arrangement1 the ,mission participating in the proceeds4 ,jesus ,himself4 ,their eyes were opened1 and they knew ,him4 ,i ,the words1 from which ,i want to present a simple message1 will be found in the ,gospel according to ,st4 ,luke1 the #bdth chapter and the #cast verse3 ,and their eyes were opened1 and they knew ,him4 ,some time since1 ,i preached a sermon with the words ,jesus ,himself as the text2 and as ,i went home ,i said to those who were walking with me3 ,how possible it is to have ,jesus ,himself with us and never to know it1 and how possible to preach of1 and to listen to1 all the truth about ,jesus ,himself and yet not to know ,him4 ,i cannot say what a deep impression was made upon me as ,i thought over it4 ,now these disciples had spent a most blessed time with ,jesus1 but if they had gone away before ,he revealed ,himself that evening1 they would never have been sure that it was ,jesus1 for their eyes were holden that they should not know ,him4 ,that is1 alas1 the condition of a great multitude in the ,church of ,christ4 ,they know that ,christ has risen from the dead4 ,they believe1 and they very often have blessed experiences that come from the risen ,christ4 ,very often in a time of ,convention1 or in time of silent ,bible reading1 or in a time of the visitation of ,god's grace1 their hearts burn2 and yet it can be said of a people whose hearts are burning within them1 that they did not know it was ,jesus ,himself4 ,and now if you ask me what is to be the great blessing to be sought1 my answer is this3 ,not only should we think about ,jesus ,himself and speak about ,him and believe in ,him1 but we should come to the point that the disciples in the text arrived at1 and they knew ,him4 ,everything is to be found in that4 ,if ,i read that story of the disciples on the way to ,emmaus1 ,i get from it four stages in the ,christian life4 ,just think6 ,how did they begin the morning that day8 ,with ,hearts sad and troubled1 because they thought ,jesus was dead4 ,they did not know that ,he was alive1 and that is the state of very many ,christians4 ,they look to the ,cross1 and they struggle to trust ,christ1 but they have never yet learned the blessedness of believing that there is a living ,christ to do everything for them4 ,oh6 that word of the angel to the women6 ,why seek ye the living among the dead8 ,what is the difference between a dead ,christ1 whom the women went to anoint1 and a living ,christ8 ,a dead ,christ1 ,i must do everything for2 a living ,christ does everything for me4 ,the disciples began the morning with a sad heart4 ,i fancy very possibly they spent a sleepless night4 ,oh6 the terrible disappointment6 ,they had hoped that ,christ would be the ,deliverer of ,israel1 and they had seen ,him die an accursed death4 ,on the morning of that first day of the week1 they rose with sad hearts--the bitter sadness cannot be expressed4 ,that is just the life of many ,christians4 ,they try to believe in ,jesus and to trust ,him1 and to hope in ,him1 but there is no joy4 ,why8 ,because they do not know that there is a living ,christ to reveal ,himself4 ,then there is the second stage4 ,what is that8 ,the stage of which ,christ speaks3 ,slow of heart to believe4 ,they had the message from the women4 ,they told the stranger who walked with them3 ,certain women have astonished us1 telling us they have seen an angel1 who says ,he is alive4 ,and ,christ replied to them3 ,oh6 fools1 and slow of heart to believe4 ,yes6 there are many ,christians to-day who have heard and who know that they must not only believe in a crucified ,christ1 but in a living ,christ1 and they try to grasp it and take it in1 but it does not bring them a blessing1 and why8 ,because they want to feel it and not to believe it4 ,they want to work for it1 and with efforts get hold of it1 instead of just quietly sinking down and believing1 ,christ1 the living ,jesus1 ,he will do everything for us4 ,that is the second stage4 ,the first stage is that of ignorance1 the second stage is that of unbelief--the doubting heart that cannot take in the wonderful truth that ,jesus lives4 ,then comes the third stage-- ,the burning heart4 ,jesus came to the two disciples1 and after ,he had reproved them and said3 ,oh6 fools1 and slow of heart to believe1 ,he began to open the ,scriptures to them1 and to tell them of all the wonderful things the prophets had taught4 ,then their eyes were opened1 and they began to understand the ,scriptures4 ,they saw that it was true that it was prophesied that ,christ must rise4 ,as ,he talked1 there came out from ,him--the living risen ,one--a mighty influence1 and it rested upon them1 and they began to feel their hearts burn within them with joy and gladness4 ,you still say perhaps3 ,that is the stage we want to come to4 ,no2 ,god forbid you should stop there4 ,you may get in that third stage--the burning heart--and yet something is still wanting--the revelation of ,christ4 ,the disciples had had a blessed experience of ,his divine powers1 but ,he had not revealed ,himself1 and oh6 how often it is that at ,conventions and in churches1 and in meetings and in blessed fellowship with ,god's saints1 our hearts burn within us4 ,these are precious experiences of the working of ,god's grace and ,spirit1 and yet there is something wanting4 ,what is that8 ,jesus ,himself has been working upon us1 and the power of his risen life has touched us1 but we cannot say1 ,i have met ,him4 ,he has made ,himself known to me4 ,oh1 the difference between a burning heart1 which becomes cold after a time1 which comes by fits and starts1 and the blessed revelation of ,jesus ,himself as my ,saviour1 taking charge of me and blessing me and keeping me every day6 ,this is the stage of ,the satisfied heart4 ,oh my brother1 my sister6 ,it is what ,i ask for you1 and it is what ,i am sure you ask for yourself4 ,i ask it for myself4 ,lord ,jesus6 may we know ,thee in thy divine glory as the risen ,one1 our ,jesus1 our ,beloved and our mighty ,one4 ,oh6 if there are any sad ones who cannot take this in1 and who say1 ,i have never known the joy of religion yet--listen1 we are going to tell you how you can4 ,all will center round this one thing1 that just as a little child lives day by day in the arms of its mother1 and grows up year by year under a mother's eye1 it is a possibility that you can live every day and hour of your life in fellowship with the ,holy ,jesus4 ,he will do it for you4 ,come1 and let your sad heart begin to hope4 ,will ,he reveal ,himself8 ,he did it to the disciples and ,he will do it to you4 ,perhaps there are some who have got beyond the sad heart and who yet feel1 ,i have not got what ,i want4 ,if you throw open your heart and give up everything but just believing and allowing ,him to do what ,he wants1 it will come4 ,god be praised6 it will come4 ,jesus will reveal ,himself4 ,perhaps you have arrived at the stage of the burning heart1 and can tell of many blessed experiences1 but somehow there is a worm at the root4 ,the experiences do not last1 and the heart is so changeable4 ,oh come1 my beloved6 ,follow ,christ4 ,say1 ,jesus1 reveal ,thyself that we may know ,thee ,thyself4 ,we ask not only to drink of the living water1 we want the fountain4 ,we ask not only to bathe ourselves in the light1 we want the ,sun of ,righteousness within our hearts4 ,we ask not only to know ,thee1 who hast touched us and warmed our hearts and blessed us1 but we want to know that we have the unchangeable ,jesus dwelling within our hearts and abiding with us forevermore4 ,now comes the question which ,i really wanted to put1--,what are the conditions under which our blessed ,lord reveals ,himself8 ,or1 put it this way1--,to whom is it that ,jesus will reveal ,himself8 ,we have only to see how he dealt with these disciples1 and we get the answer4 ,what is the answer8 ,first of all ,i think ,i find here that ,christ revealed ,himself to those disciples ,who had given up everything for ,him4 ,he had said to them3 ,forsake all and follow ,me1 and they had done it4 ,with all their feebleness and all their unfaithfulness they followed ,christ to the end4 ,he said to them3 ,ye have continued with ,me in ,my temptations1 and ,i appoint you a kingdom1 as ,i have received a kingdom from ,my ,father4 ,they were not perfect men1 but they would have died for ,him4 ,they loved ,him1 they obeyed ,him1 they followed ,him4 ,they had left all1 and for three years they had been following hard after ,christ4 ,you say ,tell me what ,christ wants of me1 if ,i am to have his wonderful presence4 ,tell me what is the character of the man to whom ,christ will reveal ,himself in this highest and fullest way8 ,i answer3 ,it is the one who is ready to forsake all and to follow ,him4 ,if ,christ is to give ,himself wholly to me1 ,he must know that ,he has me wholly for ,himself2 and ,i trust ,god will give grace that these words spoken about the consecration and the surrender1 not only of all evil1 but of many lawful things1 and even1 if necessary1 of life itself1 may lead us to understand what the demand is that ,jesus makes upon us4 ,the motto of the ,cape ,general ,mission is1 ,god first4 ,in one sense that is a beautiful motto1 and yet ,i am not always satisfied with it1 because it is a motto that is often misunderstood4 ,god first may mean ,i second1 something else third1 and something else fourth4 ,god is thus first in order1 but still ,god becomes one of a series of powers1 and that is not the place ,god wants4 ,the meaning of the words1 ,god first is really ,god all2 ,god everything2 and that is what ,christ wants4 ,to be willing to give up everything1 to submit to ,christ to teach him what to say and what to do1 is the first mark of the man to whom ,christ will come4 ,are you not ready to take this step and say3 ,jesus6 ,i do give up everything2 ,i have given up everything2 reveal ,thyself4 ,oh1 brother6 oh1 sister6 do not hesitate4 ,speak it out in your heart1 and let this be the time in which a new sacrifice shall be laid at the feet of the blessed ,lamb of ,god4 ,there is a second thought4 ,there is first the idea of having forsaken all to follow ,him2 of having given up everything in obedience to ,him1 and living just a life of simple love and obedience4 ,but there is a second thing needed in the man who is to have this full revelation of ,christ4 ,he must be ,convicted of his unbelief4 ,oh6 fools1 and slow of heart to believe what the prophets have said4 ,oh6 brother1 sister1 if we could have a sight of the amount of unbelief in the hearts of ,god's children1 barring the door and closing the heart against ,christ1 how we should stand astonished and ashamed6 ,when there is not unbelief but where there is faith1 ,christ cannot help coming in4 ,he cannot help coming where there is a living faith1 a full faith4 ,the heart is opened1 the heart is prepared2 and as naturally as water runs into a hollow place1 so naturally ,christ must come into a heart that is full of faith4 ,what is the hindrance with some earnest souls1 who say3 ,i have given myself up to the ,lord ,jesus4 ,i have done it often1 and by ,his grace ,i am doing it every day1 and ,god knows how earnestly and really ,i am doing it1 and ,i have the sanction of ,god upon it1 ,i know ,god has blessed me8 ,they have not been convicted of their unbelief4 ,oh6 fools1 and slow of heart to believe4 ,do you know what ,christ said about a man calling his brother a fool8 ,yet here the loving ,son of ,god could find no other word to speak to ,his beloved disciples3 ,oh6 fools1 and slow of heart to believe4 ,you want the ,lord ,jesus to give you this full revelation of ,himself8 ,are you willing to acknowledge that you are a fool for never having believed in ,him8 ,lord ,jesus1 it is my own fault4 ,there ,thou art1 longing to have possession of me4 ,there ,thou hast been with ,thy faithful promises waiting to reveal ,thyself4 ,did you ever hear of a man loving another and not longing to reveal himself8 ,christ longs to reveal ,himself1 but ,he cannot on account of our unbelief4 ,may ,god convict us of our unbelief that we may get utterly ashamed and broken down1 and cry1 ,oh1 my ,god1 what is this1 this heart of unbelief actually throwing a barrier across the door that ,christ cannot step in1 blinding my eyes that ,i cannot see ,jesus1 though he is so near8 ,here ,he has been for ten or twenty years1 from time to time giving me the burning heart1 enjoying the experience of a little of ,his love and grace1 and yet ,i have not had the revelation of ,him1 taking possession of my heart and dwelling with me in unbroken continuity4 ,oh6 may ,god convict us of unbelief4 ,do let us believe because all things are possible to him that believes4 ,that is ,god's word1 and this blessing1 receiving the revelation of ,jesus1 can come only to those who learn to believe and to trust him4 ,there is another mark of those to whom this special revelation of ,christ will come1 and that is1 ,they do not rest until they obtain it4 ,you know the story4 ,their hearts were burning as they drew nigh to the place they were going to1 and ,christ made as if ,he were going farther4 ,he put them to the test1 and if they had allowed ,him quietly to go on1 if they had been content with the experience of the burning heart1 they would have lost something infinitely better4 ,but they were not content with it4 ,they were not content to go home to the disciples that night and say1 ,oh1 what a blessed afternoon we have had6 ,what wonderful teaching we have had6 ,no6 ,the burning heart and the blessed experience just made them say1 ,lord1 abide with us1 and they compelled ,him to come in4 ,they constrained ,him to come in4 ,it always reminds me of the story of ,jacob1 ,i will not let ,thee go1 except ,thou bless me4 ,that is the spirit that prepares us for the revelation of ,jesus4 ,oh6 my dear friend1 has this been the spirit in which we have looked upon the wonderful blessing that we have sometimes heard of8 ,oh6 my ,lord ,jesus1 though ,i do not understand it1 though ,i cannot grasp it1 though my struggles avail nothing1 ,i am not going to let ,thee go4 ,if it is possible for a sinner on earth to have ,jesus every day1 every hour1 and every moment in resurrection power dwelling in his heart1 shining within him1 filling him with love and joy1--if that is possible1 ,i want it4 ,is that your language8 ,oh6 come then and say3 ,lord ,jesus1 ,i cannot let ,thee go except ,thou bless me4 ,the question is asked so often3 ,what is the cause of the feeble life of so many ,christians8 ,what is really the matter8 ,what is actually the want8 ,how little the ,church responds to ,christ's call6 how little the ,church is what ,christ would have her to be6 ,what is the cause of all the trouble8 ,various answers may be given1 but there is one answer which includes all the other answers1 and that is1 each believer wants the personal ,full revelation of a personal ,christ as an indwelling ,lord1 as a satisfying portion4 ,when the ,lord ,jesus was here upon earth1 what was it that distinguished ,his disciples from other people8 ,he took them away from their fish-nets1 and from their homes1 and ,he gathered them about ,himself1 and they knew ,jesus4 ,he was their ,master1 and guarded them1 and they followed ,him4 ,and what is to make a difference between ,christ's disciples--not those who are just hoping to get to heaven1 but ,christ's whole-hearted disciples--what is to make a difference between them and other people8 ,it is this1 to be in fellowship with ,jesus--every hour of the day2 and just as ,christ upon earth was able to keep those people with ,him for three years1 day by day1 so ,christ is able in heaven now to do what ,he could not do when ,he was on earth--to keep in the closest fellowship with every believer throughout the whole world4 ,glory be to ,god6 ,you know that text in ,ephesians3 ,he that descended is the same also that ascended1 that ,he might fill all things4 ,why was my ,lord ,jesus taken up to heaven away from the life of earth8 ,because the life of earth is a life confined to localities1 but the life in heaven is a life in which there is no limit and no bound and no locality1 and ,christ was taken up to heaven1 that1 in the power of ,god1 of the omnipresent ,god1 ,he might be able to fill every individual here and be with every individual believer4 ,that is what my heart wants to realize by faith2 that is a possibility1 that is a promise1 that is my birthright1 and ,i want to have it1 and ,i want by the grace of ,god to say1 ,jesus1 ,i will not rest until ,thou hast revealed ,thyself fully to my soul4 ,there are often very blessed experiences in the ,christian life in what ,i call the third stage--the stage of the burning heart4 ,do you know what another great mark of that stage is8 ,delight in ,god's word4 ,how did the disciples get their burning hearts8 ,by that strange opening of the ,scripture to them4 ,he made it all look different1--new1--and they saw what they had never seen before4 ,they could not help feeling1 ,how wonderful1 how heavenly was that teaching4 ,oh6 there are many ,christians who find the best time of the day is the time when they can get with their ,bibles1 and who love nothing so much as to get a new thought2 and as a diamond digger rejoices when he has found a diamond1 or a gold digger when he has found a nugget1 they delight when they get from the ,bible some new thought1 and they feed upon it4 ,yet with all that interest in ,god's word1 and with all that stirring of the heart with joy1 when they go into business or attend to their daily duties1 there is still something wanting4 ,we must come away from all the manifold and multifarious blessings that ,jesus can bestow from time to time1 to the blessed unity of that one--that ,jesus makes ,himself known1 ,jesus ,himself is willing to make ,himself known4 ,oh6 if ,i were to ask1 ,is not this just what you and ,i want1 and what many of us have been longing for8 ,i am sure you would answer1 ,that is what ,i want4 ,think what the blessedness will be that comes from it4 ,you often sing3-- ,oh6 the peace my ,saviour gives6 ,peace ,i never knew before1 ,and my way has brighter grown1 ,since ,i've learnt to trust ,him more4 ,i recently had a letter from some one in the ,free ,state saying what a wonderful comfort and strength that little verse was in the midst of difficulties and troubles4 ,yes2 but how can that peace be kept8 ,it was the presence of ,christ that brought the peace4 ,when the storm was threatening to swallow up the disciples1 it was the presence of ,christ ,himself that gave the peace4 ,oh6 ,christian1 do you want peace and rest8 ,you must have ,jesus ,himself4 ,you talk of purity1 you talk of cleansing1 you talk of deliverance from sin4 ,praise ,god1 here is the deliverance and the cleansing1 when the living ,jesus comes and gives power4 ,then we have this resurrection of ,christ1 this heavenly ,christ upon the throne1 making ,himself known to us4 ,surely that will be the secret of purity and the secret of strength4 ,where does the strength of so many come from8 ,from the joy of a personal friendship with ,jesus4 ,those disciples1 if they had gone away with their burning hearts to the other disciples1 could have told them wonderful things of a man who had explained to them the ,scriptures and the promises1 but they could not have said1 ,we have seen ,jesus4 ,they might have said1 ,jesus is alive4 ,we are sure of that1 but that would not have satisfied the others4 ,but they could now go and say1 ,we have seen ,himself4 ,he has revealed ,himself to us4 ,we are all glad to work for ,christ1 but there is a complaint throughout the ,church of ,christ1 from the ministers in the pulpit down to the feeblest worker1 of lack of joy and lack of blessedness4 ,let us try and find out whether this is not the place where the secret will be discovered--that the ,lord ,jesus comes and shows ,himself to us as our ,master and speaks to us4 ,when we have ,jesus with us1 and when we go every footstep with the thought that it is ,jesus wants us to go1 it is ,jesus who sends us and is helping us1 then there will be brightness in our testimony1 and it will help other believers1 and they will begin to understand2 ,i see why ,i have failed4 ,i took the word1 ,i took the blessing1 and ,i took1 as ,i thought1 the life1 but ,i was without the living ,jesus4 ,and if you now ask1 ,how will this revelation come8 ,brother1 sister1 that is the secret that no man may tell1 that ,jesus keeps to ,himself4 ,it is ,in the power of the ,holy ,ghost2 ,christ1 the risen ,one1 entered into a new life4 ,his resurrection life is entirely different from ,his life before ,his death4 ,you know what we read3 ,they knew ,him4 ,he revealed ,himself1 and then ,he passed away4 ,and was that vision of ,christ worth so much8 ,it was lost in a moment4 ,it was worth heaven1 eternity1 everything4 ,why8 ,because henceforth ,christ was no longer to be known after the flesh4 ,christ was henceforth in the power of the ,spirit1 which fills ,heaven2 in the power of the ,spirit which is the power of the ,godhead2 in the power of the ,spirit1 which fills our hearts4 ,christ was henceforth to live in the life of ,heaven4 ,thank ,god1 ,christ can by the power of the ,holy ,ghost reveal ,himself to each one of us2 but oh6 brother1 it is a secret thing between ,christ and yourself4 ,take this assurance1 ,their eyes were opened and they knew ,him1 and believe that it is written for you4 ,you say1 ,i have known the other three stages2 the stage of the sad heart1 mourning that ,i knew no living ,christ2 ,i have known the stage of the slow heart to believe1 when ,i struggled with my unbelief2 and ,i know the stage of the burning heart1 when there are great times of joy and blessedness4 ,you say that8 ,oh come then and know the fourth stage of ,the satisfied heart1 of the heart made glad for eternity1 of the heart that cannot keep its joy in1 but goes away back to ,jerusalem1 and says1 ,it is true4 ,jesus has revealed ,himself4 ,i know it1 ,i feel it4 ,oh6 brother1 oh6 sister1 how will this revelation come8 ,jesus will tell you4 ,just come to the ,lord ,jesus and breathe up before ,him a simple child-like prayer1 and ,i1 ,his servant1 will come and take you by the hand and say3 ,come1 now1 my work is done4 ,i have pointed to the ,lamb of ,god1 to the risen ,one4 ,my work is done4 ,let us enter into the ,holy ,presence and begin1 if you have never yet sought it before1 begin to plead3 ,oh6 ,saviour1 that ,i might have this blessedness every moment present with me--,jesus ,himself1 my portion forever4 ,jesus ,himself4 ,lo1 ,i am with you alway4 ,,ii ,when ,i think of all the struggles and difficulties and failures of which many complain1 and know that many are trying to make a new effort to begin a holy life1 their hearts fearing all the time that they would fail again1 owing to so many difficulties and temptations and the natural weakness of their character1 my heart longs to be able to tell them in words so simple that a little child could understand1 ,what the secret is of the ,christian life4 ,and then the thought comes to me1 ,can ,i venture to hope that it will be given to me to take that glorious1 heavenly1 divine ,lord ,jesus and to show ,him to these souls1 so that they can see ,him in ,his glory8 ,and can it be given to me to open their eyes to see that there is a ,divine1 ,almighty ,christ1 who does actually come into the heart and who faithfully promises1 ,i will come and dwell with you1 and ,i will never leave you8 ,no2 my words cannot do that4 ,but then ,i thought1 my ,lord ,jesus can use me as a simple servant to take such feeble ones by the hand and encourage and help them2 to say1 ,oh1 come1 come1 come1 into the presence of ,jesus and wait on ,him1 and ,he will reveal ,himself to thee4 ,i pray ,god that ,he may use ,his precious ,word4 ,it is simply ,the presence of the ,lord ,jesus4 ,that is the secret of the ,christian's strength and joy4 ,you know that when ,he was upon earth1 ,he was present in bodily form with his disciples4 ,they walked about together all day1 and at night they went into the same house1 and sometimes slept together and ate and drank together4 ,they were continually together4 ,it was the presence of ,jesus that was the training school of ,his disciples4 ,they were bound to ,him by that wonderful intercourse of love during three long years1 and in that intercourse they learned to know ,christ1 and ,christ instructed and corrected them1 and prepared them for what they were afterward to receive4 ,and now when ,he is going away1 ,he says to them3 ,lo1 behold1 ,i am with you always--all the days--even unto the end of the world4 ,what a promise6 ,and just as really as ,christ was with ,peter in the boat1 just as ,christ sat with ,john at the table1 as really can ,i have ,christ with me4 ,and more really1 for they had their ,christ in the body and ,he was to them a man1 an individual separate from them1 but ,i may have glorified ,christ in the power of the throne of ,god1 the omnipotent ,christ1 the omnipresent ,christ4 ,what a promise6 ,you ask me1 ,how can that be8 ,and my answer is1 ,because ,christ is ,god1 and because ,christ after having been made man1 went up into the throne and the ,life of ,god4 ,and now that blessed ,christ ,jesus1 with ,his loving1 pierced heart2 that blessed ,jesus ,christ1 who lived upon earth2 that same ,christ glorified into the glory of ,god1 can be in me and ,can be with me all the days4 ,you say1 ,is it really possible for a man in business1 for a woman in the midst of a large and difficult household1 for a poor man full of care2 is it possible8 ,can ,i always be thinking of ,jesus8 ,thank ,god1 you need not always be thinking of ,him4 ,you may be the manager of a bank1 and your whole attention may be required to carry out the business that you have to do4 ,but thank ,god1 while ,i have to think of my business1 ,jesus will think of me1 and ,he will come in and will take charge of me4 ,that little child1 three months old1 as it sleeps in its mother's arms1 lies helplessly there2 it hardly knows its mother1 it does not think of her1 but the mother thinks of the child4 ,and this is the blessed mystery of love1 that ,jesus the ,god-man waits to come in to me in the greatness of ,his love2 and as ,he gets possession of my heart1 ,he embraces me in those divine arms and tells me1 ,my child1 ,i the ,faithful ,one1 ,i the ,mighty ,one will abide with thee1 will watch over thee and keep thee all the days4 ,he tells me ,he will come into my heart1 so that ,i can be a happy ,christian1 a holy ,christian1 and a useful ,christian4 ,you say1 ,oh6 if ,i could only believe that1 if ,i could think that it is possible to have ,christ always1 every hour1 every moment with me1 ,taking and keeping charge of me6 ,my brother1 my sister1 it is just literally this that is my message to you4 ,when ,jesus said to ,his disciples1 ,lo1 ,i am with you always1 ,he meant it in the fullness of the divine ,omnipresence1 in the fullness of the divine love1 and he longs to-night to reveal ,himself to you and to me as we have never seen ,him before4 ,and now just think a moment what a blessed life that must be--the presence of ,jesus always abiding4 ,is not that the secret of peace and happiness8 ,if ,i could just attain 7that is what each heart says7 to that blessed state in which every day and all the day ,i felt ,jesus to be watching and ever keeping me1 oh1 what peace ,i would have in the thought1 ,i have no care if ,he cares for me1 and ,i have no fear if ,he provides for me4 ,your heart says that this is too good to be true1 and that it is too glorious to be for you4 ,still you acknowledge it must be most blessed4 ,fearful one1 erring one1 anxious one1 ,i bring you ,god's promise1 it is for me and for you4 ,jesus will do it2 as ,god1 ,he is able1 and ,jesus is willing and longing as the ,crucified ,one to keep you in perfect peace4 ,this is a wonderful fact1 and it is the secret of joy unspeakable4 ,and this is also ,the secret of ,holiness4 ,instead of indwelling sin1 an indwelling ,christ conquering it2 instead of indwelling sin1 the indwelling life and light and love of the blessed ,son of ,god4 ,he is the secret of holiness4 ,christ is made unto us sanctification4 ,remember that it is ,christ ,himself who is made unto us sanctification4 ,christ coming into me1 taking charge of my whole being2 my nature and my thoughts and my affections and my will2 ruling all things4 ,it is this that will make me holy4 ,we talk about holiness1 but do you know what holiness is8 ,you have as much holiness as you have of ,christ1 for it is written1 ,both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one2 and ,christ sanctifies by bringing ,god's life into me4 ,we read in ,judges1 ,the ,spirit of the ,lord clothed ,gideon4 ,but you know that there is in the ,new ,testament an equally wonderful text1 where we read1 ,put on the ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 that is1 clothe yourself with ,christ ,jesus4 ,and what does that mean8 ,it does not only mean1 by imputation of righteousness outside of me1 but to clothe myself with the living character of the living ,christ1 with the living love of the living ,christ4 ,put on the ,lord ,jesus4 ,oh6 what a work4 ,i cannot do it unless ,i believe and understand that ,he whom ,i have to put on is as a garment covering my whole being4 ,i have to put on a living ,christ who has said1 ,lo1 ,i am with you all the days4 ,just draw the folds closer round you1 of that robe of light with which ,christ would array you4 ,just come and acknowledge that ,christ is with you1 on you1 in you4 ,oh1 put ,him on6 ,and when you look at one characteristic of ,his after another2 and you hear ,god's word1 ,let this mind be in you which was also in ,jesus ,christ1 and it tells you ,he was obedient unto the death2 and then you answer1 ,christ the obedient one1 ,christ whose whole life was obedience1 it is that ,christ whom ,i have received and put on4 ,he becomes my life and ,his obedience rests upon me1 until ,i learn to whisper as ,jesus did1 ,my ,father1 ,thy will be done2 lo1 ,i come to do ,thy will4 ,this1 too1 is the secret of influence in witness and work4 ,how comes it that it is so ,difficult to be obedient1 and how comes it that ,i so often sin8 ,people sing1 ,oh1 to be wholly ,thine1 and sing it from their hearts4 ,how comes it then that they are disobedient again8 ,where does the disobedience come from8 ,and the answer comes1 ,it is because ,i am trying to obey a distant ,christ1 and thus ,his commands do not come with power4 ,look what ,i find in ,god's ,word4 ,when ,god wanted to send any man upon ,his service1 ,he first met him and talked with him and cheered him time after time4 ,god appeared to ,abraham seven or eight times1 and gave to him one command after another2 and so ,abraham learned to obey ,him perfectly4 ,god appeared to ,joshua and to ,gideon1 and they obeyed4 ,and why are we not obedient8 ,because we have so little of this near intercourse with ,jesus4 ,but1 oh1 if we knew ,this blessed1 heavenly secret of having the presence of ,christ with us every day1 every hour1 every minute1 what a joy it would be to obey6 ,we could not walk in this consciousness1--,my ,lord ,jesus is with me and around me1--and not obey ,him6 ,oh1 do you not begin to long and say1 ,this is what ,i must have1 the ever-abiding presence of ,jesus6 ,there are some ,christians who try not to be disobedient1 who come to their ,sunday and week-day duties most faithfully1 and pray for grace and a blessing1 and they complain of so little blessing and power1 so little power6 ,and why8 ,because there is not enough of the living ,jesus in their hearts4 ,i sometimes think of this as a most solemn truth4 ,there is a great diversity of gifts amongst ministers and others who speak2 but ,i am sure of this1 that a man's gifts are not the measure of his real power4 ,i am sure of this1 that ,god can see what neither you nor ,i can see4 ,sometimes people feel something of it2 but in proportion as a man has in reality1 not as a sentiment or an aspiration1 or a thought1 but in reality1 the very spirit and presence of ,jesus upon him1 there comes out from him an unseen silent influence4 ,that secret influence is the ,holy presence of ,jesus4 ,lo1 ,i am with you always4 ,and now1 if what ,i have said has sufficed just to indicate what a desirable thing it is1 what a blessed thing it is to live for1 then let me now give you an answer to the question that arises in more than one heart4 ,i can hear some one say1 ,tell me how ,i can get this blessed abiding presence of ,jesus2 and when ,i have got it1 how ,i can ever keep it4 ,i think if ,i have this1 ,i have all4 ,the ,lord ,jesus has come very near to me4 ,i have tried to turn away from everything that can hinder1 and have had my ,lord very near4 ,but how can ,i know that ,he will be with me always8 ,if you were to ask the ,lord1 ,oh1 my blessed ,lord ,christ1 what must ,i do1 how can ,i enjoy ,thy never-failing presence8 ,his first answer would be1 ,only believe4 ,i have said it often1 and you only partly understood it1 but ,i will say it again-- ,my child1 only believe4 ,it is by faith4 ,we sometimes speak of faith as trust1 and it is a very helpful thing to tell men that faith is trust3 but when people say1 as they sometimes do1 that it is nothing else but trust1 that is not the case4 ,it is a far wider word than trust4 ,it is by faith that ,i learn to know the invisible ,one1 the invisible ,god1 and that ,i see ,him4 ,faith is my spiritual eye-sight for the unseen and heavenly4 ,you often try hard to trust ,god1 and you fail4 ,why8 ,because you have not taken time first to see ,god4 ,how can you trust ,god fully until you have met ,him and known ,him8 ,you ask1 ,where ought ,i to begin8 ,you ought to begin with first believing2 with presenting yourself before this ,god in the attitude of silent worship1 and asking ,him to let a sense of ,his greatness and ,his presence come upon you4 ,you must ask ,him to let your heart be covered over with his holy presence4 ,you must seek to realize in your heart the presence of an ,almighty and all-loving ,god1 an unspeakably loving ,god4 ,take time to worship ,him as the omnipotent ,god1 to feel that the very power that created the world1 the very power that raised ,jesus from the dead1 is at this moment working in your heart4 ,we do not experience it because we do not believe4 ,we must take time to believe4 ,jesus says1 ,oh1 my child1 shut your eyes to the world1 and shut out of your heart all these thoughts about religion1 and begin to believe in ,god ,himself4 ,that is the first article of the ,creed--,i believe in ,god4 ,by believing ,i open my heart1 to receive this glorious ,god1 and ,i bow and worship4 ,and then as ,i believe this1 ,i look up and ,i see the ,lamb upon the ,throne1 and ,i believe that the ,almighty power of ,god is in ,jesus for the very purpose of revealing ,his presence to my heart4 ,why are there two upon the ,throne8 ,is not ,god enough8 ,the ,lamb of ,god is upon the ,throne in your interest and in mine2 the ,lamb upon the ,throne is ,christ ,himself1 with power as ,god to take possession of me4 ,oh1 do not think you cannot get that realization4 ,and do not think of it as now only within your reach2 but cultivate the habit of faith4 ,jesus1 ,i believe in ,thy glory2 ,i believe in ,thine omnipotence2 ,i believe in ,thy power working within me4 ,i believe in ,thy living1 loving presence with me1 revealing itself in ,divine power4 ,do not be occupied with feelings or experiences4 ,you will find it far simpler and easier just to trust and say1 ,i am sure ,he is all for me4 ,get rid of yourself for the time2 don't think or speak about yourself2 but ,think what ,jesus is4 ,and then remember it is believe always4 ,i sometimes feel that ,i cannot find words to tell how ,god wants ,his people to believe from morning till night4 ,every breath ought to be just believing4 ,yes1 it is indeed true2 the ,lord ,jesus loves us to be just believing from morning to evening1 and you must begin to make that the chief thing in life4 ,in the morning when you wake1 let your heart go forth with a large faith in this2 and in the watches of the night let this thought be present with you--my ,saviour ,jesus is round me and near me1 and you can look up and say1 ,i want to trust ,thee always4 ,you know what trust is4 ,it is so sweet to trust4 ,and now cannot you trust ,jesus2 this presence1 this keeping presence8 ,he lives for you in ,heaven4 ,you are marked with ,his blood1 and he loves you2 and cannot you say1 ,my ,king1 my ,king1 ,he is with me all the days8 ,oh1 trust ,jesus to fulfill ,his own promises4 ,there is a second answer that ,i think ,christ would give if we come to ,him believing1 and say1 ,is there anything more1 my blessed ,master8 ,i think ,i can hear ,his answer3 ,my child1 always obey4 ,do not fail to understand the lesson contained in this one word4 ,you must distinctly and definitely take that word ,,obey and obedience1 and learn to say for yourselves3 ,now ,i have to obey1 and by the grace of ,god ,i am going to obey in everything4 ,at our recent exhibition at the ,cape1 ,mr4 ,rhodes1 our ,prime ,minister1 went to the gate1 thinking he had got the fee in his pocket4 ,when he got to the gate1 however1 he found he had not enough money1 and said to the door-keeper1 ,i am ,mr4 ,rhodes2 let me in and ,i will take care you do not suffer4 ,but the man said1 ,i cannot help that1 sir1 ,i have my orders1 and he refused to let ,mr4 ,rhodes in4 ,he had to borrow from a friend1 and pay before he could pass the gate4 ,at a dinner afterward ,mr4 ,rhodes spoke about it1 and said it was a real joy to see a man stick to his order like that4 ,that is it4 ,the man had his orders1 and that was enough to him1 and whoever came to the gate had to pay his fee before he could enter4 ,god's children ought to be like soldiers1 and be ,ready to say1 ,i must obey4 ,oh6 to have that thought in our hearts--,jesus1 ,i love to obey ,thee4 ,there must be personal intercourse with the ,saviour1 and then comes the joy of personal service and allegiance4 ,are you ready to obey in all feebleness and weakness and fear8 ,can you say1 ,yes1 ,lord ,jesus1 ,i will obey8 ,if so1 then give yourself up absolutely4 ,then your feeling will be1 ,i am not going to speak one word if ,i think that ,jesus would not like to hear it4 ,i am not going to have an opinion of my own1 but my whole life is to be covered with the purity of ,his obedience to the ,father and ,his self-sacrificing love to me4 ,i want ,christ to have my whole life1 my whole heart1 my whole character4 ,i want to be like ,christ and to obey4 ,give yourself up to this loving obedience4 ,the third thought is this3 ,if ,i say1 ,my ,master1 blessed ,saviour1 tell me all1 ,i will believe1 ,i do obey1 and ,i will obey4 ,is there anything more ,i need to secure the enjoyment of ,thine abiding presence8 ,and ,i catch this answer3 ,my child1 close intercourse with me every day4 ,ah1 there is the fault of many who try to obey and try to believe2 they do it in their own strength1 and they do not know that if the ,lord ,jesus is to reign in their hearts1 they must have close communion with ,him every day4 ,you cannot do all ,he desires1 but ,jesus will do it for you4 ,there are many ,christians who fail here1 and on that account do not understand what it is to have fellowship with ,jesus4 ,do let me try and impress this upon you3 ,god has given you a loving1 living ,saviour1 and how can ,he bless if you do not meet ,him8 ,the joy of friendship is found in intercourse2 and ,jesus asks for this every day1 that he may have time to influence me1 to tell me of ,himself1 to teach me1 to breathe ,his ,spirit unto me1 to give me new life and joy and strength4 ,and remember1 intercourse with ,jesus ,does not mean half-an-hour or an hour in your closet4 ,a man may study his ,bible or his commentary carefully2 he may look up all the parallel passages in the chapter2 when he comes out of his closet he may be able to tell you all about it1 and yet he has never met ,jesus that morning at all4 ,you have prayed for five or ten minutes1 and you have never met ,jesus4 ,and so we must remember that though the ,bible is most precious1 and the reading of it most blessed and needful2 yet prayer and ,bible reading are not fellowship with ,jesus4 ,what we need every morning is to meet ,jesus1 and to say1 ,lord1 here is the day again1 and ,i am just as weak in myself as ever ,i was2 do ,thou come and feed me this morning with ,thyself and speak to my soul4 ,oh1 friends1 it is not your faith that will keep you standing1 but it is a living ,jesus1 met ,every day in fellowship and worship and love4 ,wait in ,his presence1 however cold and faithless you feel4 ,wait before ,him and say3 ,lord1 helpless as ,i am1 ,i believe and rest in the blessed assurance that what ,thou hast promised ,thou wilt do for me4 ,i ask my ,master once again1 ,lord ,jesus1 is that all8 ,and his answer is3 ,no1 my child2 ,i have one thing more4 ,and what is that8 ,thou hast told me to believe1 and to obey1 and to abide near to ,thee3 what wouldst ,thou have more8 ,work for me my child4 ,remember1 ,i have redeemed thee for ,my service2 ,i have redeemed thee to have a witness to go out into the world confessing ,me before men4 ,oh1 do not hide your treasure1 or think that if ,jesus is with you1 you can hide it4 ,one of two things will happen--either you must give all up1 or it must come out4 ,you have perhaps heard of the little girl1 who1 after one of ,mr4 ,moody's meetings1 was found to be singing some of the hymns we all know4 ,the child's parents were in a good position in society1 and while singing those hymns in the drawing-room her mother forbade her4 ,one day she was singing the hymn ,oh1 ,i'm so glad that ,jesus loves me1 when her mother said1 ,my child1 how is it that you sing this when ,i have forbidden it8 ,she replied1 ,oh1 mother1 ,i cannot help it2 it comes out of itself4 ,if ,jesus ,christ be in the heart1 ,he must come out4 ,remember1 it is not only our duty to confess ,him2 it is that1 but it is something more4 ,if you do not do it1 it is just an indication that you have not given yourself up to ,jesus2 your character1 your reputation1 your all4 ,you are holding back from ,him4 ,you must confess ,jesus in the world1 in your home2 and in fact everywhere4 ,you know the ,lord's command1 ,go ye into all the world1 and preach the ,gospel to every creature2 and1 lo1 ,i am with you1 meaning1 ,any one may work for ,me1 and ,i will be with him4 ,it is true of the minister1 the missionary1 and every believer who works for ,jesus4 ,the presence of ,jesus is intimately connected with work for ,him4 ,you say1 ,i have never thought of that before4 ,i have my ,sunday work1 but during the week ,i am not doing work for ,him4 ,you cannot have the presence of ,jesus1 and let this continue to be the case4 ,i do not believe you could have the presence of ,jesus all the week and yet do nothing for ,him2 therefore my advice is1 work for ,him who is worthy1 ,his blessing and ,his presence will be found in the work4 ,it is ,a blessed privilege to work for ,christ in this perishing world4 ,oh1 why is it that our hearts often feel so cold and closed up1 and so many of us say1 ,i do not feel called to ,christ's work8 ,be willing to yield yourself for the ,lord's service1 and ,he will reveal ,himself to you4 ,christ comes with ,his wondrous promise1 and what ,he says1 ,he says to all believers3 ,lo1 ,i am with you always2 that is ,my promise2 this is what ,i in ,my power can do2 this is what ,i faithfully engage to perform2 will you have it8 ,i give ,myself to thee1 ,o soul4 ,to each of those who have come to ,him1 ,christ says1 ,i give ,myself to thee1 to be absolutely and wholly thine every hour of every day2 to be with thee and in thee every moment1 to bless thee and sustain thee1 and to give thee each moment the consciousness of ,my presence2 ,i will be wholly1 wholly1 wholly thine4 ,and now1 what is the other side8 ,he wants me to be wholly ,his4 ,are you ready to take this as your motto now1 ,wholly for ,god8 ,o ,god1 breathe ,thou ,thy presence in my heart that ,thou mayest shine forth from my life4 ,wholly for ,god1 let this be our motto4 ,come let us cast ourselves on our faces before ,his feet4 ,our missionary from ,nyassaland says he has often been touched by seeing how the native ,christians1 when they are brought to ,jesus1 do not stand in prayer2 they do not kneel2 but they cast themselves upon the earth with their foreheads to the ground1 and there they lie1 and with loud voices cry unto ,god4 ,i sometimes feel that ,i wish we could do that ourselves2 but we need not do it literally4 ,let us do it in spirit1 for the everlasting ,son of ,god has come into our hearts4 ,are you going to take ,him and to keep ,him there1 to give ,him glory and let ,him have ,his way8 ,come now and say1 ,i will seek ,thee with my whole heart2 ,i am wholly ,thine4 ,yield yourself entirely to ,him to have complete possession4 ,he will take and keep possession4 ,come now4 ,jesus delights in the worship of ,his ,saints4 ,our whole life can become one continuous act of worship and work of love and joy1 if we only remember and value this1 that ,jesus has said1 ,lo1 ,i am with you all the days1 even unto the end of the world4
