slavery4 ,slavery was first and last selfish4 ,the training received by the ,negro under forced labor had no ethical meaning4 ,the ,negro labored1 but was not taught the dignity of labor2 he did not find any dignity in it4 ,if there was any1 his masters would have labored as he did1 but the ,negro served as the cat's paws to get the nuts from the fire4 ,the fire burnt him severely1 but he had not the benefit of the nuts4 ,thus the moral and ethical benefit which he might have received from labor was lost4 ,let our moralists ponder over this4 ,the ,negro's masters did not believe in self-support during slavery2 they were supported4 ,now that his freedom is secured1 the ,negro also would like to have and hold as the masters did4 ,the result of this forced selfish labor may be briefly summed up thus4 ,the ,negro by training and example became prejudiced against severe struggle and toil1 physical or intellectual4 ,he is now distrustful of attempts made to induce him to labor4 ,he is willing to let somebody else do the work while he reaps the benefit1 just as his masters did during slavery4 ,thus slavery became a foe to true ,christian manliness1 self-respect1 and faith in one's self and others4 ,it took #bjj years to force these traits into the ,negro's being4 ,it was destructive of all that is uplifting to his soul4 ,there is now a reaction going on4 ,unless the forces of the ,christian schools and churches are applied with energy1 the work of construction will not soon overcome that of #bjj years of destruction4 ,foremost in the education of the ,negro along the line of self-support is the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,that the policy of the ,association regarding self-help is not theoretical1 but practical1 may be seen in the statement of ,rev4 ,dr4 ,beard concerning the work in the ,south1 before the ,national ,council for #ahie4 ,he says3 ,we are realizing also that the independent methods of ,congregational polity develop self-help4 ,these churches each year are bearing a larger part of their own support4 ,when it is remembered that formerly their preachers were seldom paid anything1 it can be understood that this new way of church life is full of meaning4 ,the ,association states in emphatic and unequivocal language its belief1 founded on long experience1 in an indigenous ministry4 ,as ,dr4 ,beard says3 ,our general policy has been to prepare the race to save the race4 ,this is based upon the conviction that in the long run1 and in the large view1 the most effective way to lift up the masses is to do what we can to help the relatively few to climb into higher intellectual and moral power4 ,one means toward the solution of this problem of self-help is the industrial solution4 ,many overlook it because they think the ,negro has already had much of it in his past history4 ,but the ,negro has never had the best of it4 ,his industrial training before the war was immoral as well as unscientific4 ,the industrial education of the ,negro then was carried on without mental and moral culture2 now the head1 the hands1 and the heart are the triplets which must control his development4 ,before the war he was simply a machine in industry2 now he is to be trained as a living soul4 ,before the war he had some restraint through industrial work1 but it was physical1 not moral4 ,the education which the coming twentieth century requires of the ,negro through industry will be imperfect unless it shall be permeated with the best and purest of ideals4 ,it is also a recognition of the fact that man is more than a physical creature2 he is a combination of the physical and the spiritual4 ,it must be two natures working in harmony with each other's development4 ,the modern industrialism is a combination of preaching and practice4 ,it has in it a larger conception of ,god's ,kingdom as seen in the world of matter4 ,if it is not the highest conception1 it is not the lowest1 and should not be despised in the education of a race just emerging from ignorance4 ,one has only to see the ,negro in the plantations of the ,south1 and observe his methods of work1 to be convinced of the necessity of industrial training as a means toward self-help4 ,look throughout these farming districts and you will see houses fit for pigs to dwell in rather than men2 you will eat food the mode of preparation of which is unworthy of a human being2 you will see women in laundry work who have never seen a washing-machine all their life2 and gradually the idea will flash into your mind that industrial training is needed4 ,the question may be asked1 ,what is the ,american ,missionary ,association doing along these lines of self-help and independence8 ,much has been done1 and is being done4 ,the ,association has not said much1 but it is doing much4 ,this is better than saying much and doing little4 ,at the present time1 when much is said about the industrial development of the ,south1 there is danger of following the crowd whose ideals are not the highest4 ,the popular cry is for a rejuvenated ,south1 a ,south with prosperous mills and factories1 and the ,negro with it4 ,the ,association has wisely kept out of this1 and yet has done more than any other organization toward the industrial independence of the people4 ,it was the first to start industrial schools for the ,negroes4 ,its first industrial school was founded at ,talladega1 ,ala41 in #ahfg1 where it now works about #cjj acres of land4 ,modern farming in its most important branches is taught here4 ,in connection with the school are popular lectures1 which are listened to1 and scattered by the students throughout the country4 ,white and black farmers are being improved by them4 ,the instructor in farming1 a graduate of the ,amherst ,agricultural ,college1 is both scientific and practical4 ,in the same school1 at ,talladega1 young men and women are taught various other branches of industry4 ,tougaloo ,institution1 in ,mississippi1 has a farm of #ejj acres1 which supplies cities in the ,northwest with her produce4 ,there are no less than fifty industrial schools under the ,american ,missionary ,association1 not to mention independent schools1 which are largely fostered by ,congregational influence4 ,the reflex influence of these industrial schools upon the whites is marvelous4 ,while we labor to plant seeds of true manhood in the hearts of the people1 we recognize the fact that there must be a going-out and a taking-in4 ,the involution of the race must precede its evolution4 ,it therefore requires time to see fruits4 ,time will tell2 it is already telling4 ,with boards devising1 and schools1 churches1 and pastors formulating1 methods to bring about the solution of the problem1 we shall reap an abundant harvest4 ,when it is known that the larger portion of the colored race in the ,south is still living on the plantations1 practically untouched by the ,christian influences of this century1 living without ,god and not touched by our mission work1 it accentuates the imperative duty of the churches and pastors of churches to hasten the work of self-support4 ,in concluding1 ,i emphasize the following points3 #a4 ,that the work of educating a race to manly independence requires time as well as energy4 #b4 ,that it behooves all teachers of the race to do their utmost to rid the minds of the people of those ideas of slavery which strike a blow at their independence4 #c4 ,that the position taken by the ,american ,missionary ,association is the true one in preparing the people for self-support1 and thus toward the self-support of our churches4 #d4 ,that while recognizing the difficulties in the way of self-help and self-support1 many1 if not all1 can be removed if all the churches put their shoulders to the wheel1 and both teach and practice this1 and do all they can for their own support1 rather than seek to have everything done for them4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,beach a large and appreciative audience by the ,rev4 ,j4 ,j4 ,durham1 one of the colored pastors of ,savannah4 ,on ,tuesday there are oral examinations in the classrooms4 ,on ,wednesday1 palms1 magnolias1 cape jasmine1 and wild bamboo-vine have lent their charm to render the chapel a fragrant abode of beauty4 ,old ,glory hangs here and there upon its walls4 ,the large flag which each morning through the year has received1 after the singing of a patriotic song1 the salutations of the assembled students1 has given place for this occasion to the inspiring words of the ,latin motto1 ,ad astra per aspera1 which in bold relief gleam out from a star-bespangled field of blue above the platform4 ,through the dense crowd which overflows the chapel and throngs the adjoining rooms1 to the notes of a march on the piano1 the ,ninth ,grade enters and stands to receive the graduating class1 who file to their places on the platform4 ,with what swelling of heart are they silently greeted1 and how dear and noble a band do they seem to fond1 self-sacrificing parents1 and to the teachers who have labored to bring them to this the proudest day of their young lives4 ,the class is one of the largest which the ,beach has ever graduated--four youths and thirteen girls4 ,the salutatory and essay1 ,what ,can a ,woman ,do8 earnest1 suggestive1 and pleasingly delivered1 was followed in due order by recitations1 all rendered with spirit and grace1 and winning enthusiastic applause4 ,the declamation by one youth1 of ,president ,lincoln's address at ,gettysburg1 and the orations1 by two others1 on race questions1 receive due meed of appreciation4 ,in the cantata1 ,the ,ivy ,queen1 all the girl graduates take part1 and the ivy crown is placed on the brow of the valedictorian1 who is a keen-minded young girl of the pure ,negro type4 ,her essay and valedictory1 ,character-building1 is a worthy production4 ,it was an inspiring thing to look into the dark but perfectly radiant faces of her father and mother1 when1 after the exercises1 they came1 all too full for verbal expression1 to grasp the hands of teachers4 ,after the class song is sung1 diplomas bestowed1 the in-coming senior class welcomed1 and the announcement made as to the one whose rank in her studies entitles her to a free scholarship for the ensuing year1 a brief but most excellent address is given by a young colored physician of ,savannah1 whose ability1 culture1 high moral worth1 and nobly unselfish ambitions fit him to stand as a model to our students4 ,the newly made alumni meet teachers and friends in the ,teachers' ,home for refreshments and a good1 happy time generally2 and in the midst of it all one of the workers of ,beach is surprised by a token of appreciation in the form of a beautiful gift from the graduating class4 ,our orator of the day1 after some consultation1 proposes to the class of '#if the forming of an alumni association at the opening of the next year1 and then soon all the ,congregational ,church4 ,in addressing the graduates he urged a practical use of the knowledge gained2 he emphasized the fact that philanthropy is giving one's self1 and he impressed upon them the necessity of co-operating with ,christ in all things if success is desired in anything4 ,wednesday was ,visitors' ,day at the school1 and a larger number was out this year to witness the examinations and inspect work than for several previous years4 ,wednesday night the alumni held their regular meeting in the chapel4 ,thursday1 ,commencement ,day1 dawned gloriously1 and long before the time for the exercises to begin1 people were wending their way toward the building in order to obtain a comfortable seat4 ,there were three graduates1 all girls1 and they made a pretty sight as they marched slowly up the aisle and took their places upon the platform4 ,the ,annual ,address was delivered by ,rev4 ,s4 ,a4 ,peeler1 of the ,m4 ,e4 ,church4 ,he did not go back thirty years and tell the condition of the ,negro at that time1 and extol him for the rapid stride he has made1 etc4 ,he did not enumerate the things the ,negro can do1 but he simply and plainly stated1 so that all an able address on ,racial ,contributions to ,american ,civilization1 which1 while stating plain truths very plainly1 gave no offense to the white friends present4 ,for the first time in our knowledge of the school there were a number of white ladies in the audience1 which we felt was quite a point gained4 ,all expressed themselves as very much pleased with the address1 the parts of the graduates1 the music1 and in fact with all the exercises4 ,mr4 ,proctor's presence with us was an inspiration to all1 both teachers and pupils4 ,on the whole1 the year was closed with hopefulness for the future department which is not only patronized by pupils in the required course1 but volunteer classes have been formed consisting of the older male students and of mothers living near the college4 ,a hospital bed was exhibited1 and also the various sorts of bandages required in special cases4 ,the boys' mechanical department furnished a large display in carpentry--mostly of a technical character4 experienced the conditions both of slavery and of freedom1 and his children have inherited that father's interest in education to a large degree4 ,this1 his youngest daughter1 is cared for by her brothers1 and the solicitude they exhibit in her welfare is very touching4 ,may she finish her course with honor1 and perform a noble work for ,christ and humanity4 ,a few years ago a man and his wife left the service of their employer in a neighboring city1 rented a little cottage in ,talladega1 and entered the same class in one of our lower grades4 ,by prudence and economy they had saved some money and were able to live comfortably while prosecuting their studies4 ,they have passed regularly up the grades and are happy in the progress they are making4 ,during the long summer vacation they find employment1 and are on hand promptly at the fall opening of the school4 ,they are both active church members1 and the man expects to study for the ministry after sufficient preparatory training4 ,here is a case several times repeated4 ,it is that of a girl who is making her way unaided by parental effort4 ,she spends the long summer vacation teaching a country school4 ,the pay is small1 board must be paid out of her wages1 and her scanty wardrobe must be replenished4 ,she has made a deposit with the treasurer1 and has arranged for work at the boarding hall to help out in the matter of college bills4 ,she has no time for play1 no money for luxuries1 but she is plucky and is bound to have an education1 and it looks as if she would succeed4 ,a young man is here4 ,he came with plain clothes1 although they were clean and new4 ,out of wages--less than ten dollars a month and board--he had saved an amount which1 with work out of study hours would insure him a year in school4 ,once he came without money1 but we could not receive him4 ,he therefore determined to come next time with money1 and his success we note above4 ,promotion for good scholarship came soon4 ,religious ,one finds that every year the enrollment grows larger4 ,the people are increasingly appreciating the work done by the school4 ,every one who can afford it usually sends his children to our school1 morning till ,saturday night1 and do all kinds of manual labor1 to obtain the money with which to keep their children in school4 ,some of our neediest pupils prove to be the best in their classes4 ,one boy1 whose widowed mother is unable to keep him in school1 may be seen every day before and after school going in search of odd jobs to obtain money with which to pay his tuition4 ,this boy is one of the brightest pupils we have4 ,there are others who are equally anxious to obtain an education4 ,many will walk distances ranging from three to seven miles to school every morning4 ,the interest in the school increases yearly to such an extent that the building1 which at first was thought to be large enough to accommodate all who would come1 is now entirely too small to accommodate the pupils that we have4 ,it will be almost impossible to get along next year without more room4 ,we are greatly in need of a chapel where we can hold our devotions and have our public exercises4 been one of progress and prosperity4 ,nothing has occurred to hinder the work4 ,the conscientious performance of duty has been the rule of the school1 and the students who entered with any other purpose in view soon discovered their mistake and saw that they did not have the approval of their companions4 ,the forerunner of the closing exercises was the presentation of the cantata ,little ,red ,riding-hood1 by the pupils of the intermediate grades4 ,this entertainment drew as large an audience as the chapel1 a room that has a seating capacity of #fjj1 could accommodate4 ,the music1 both vocal and instrumental1 was excellent1 and illustrated most fully the remarkable progress that has been made in this department within the past three years4 ,two days were devoted to the annual written examinations1 momentous occasions1 that were crowned with success so far as the majority of the pupils were concerned4 ,the ordeal of examinations closed with the public oral ones on ,friday morning4 ,on the afternoon of the same day occurred the exhibition of the eighth grade1 the class finishing the grammar course4 ,the essays presented on this occasion were all upon subjects suggested by the pupils' study of ,united ,states history4 ,the exercises of ,monday morning were wholly musical4 ,the first part of the programme consisted of the cantata ,the ,musical ,enthusiast1 and the second part of a piano recital4 ,all the music presented was of a high order1 most of it being classical4 ,on ,tuesday a declamatory contest was given by the young women of the normal department4 ,the prize offered by a friend of one of the teachers was a year's tuition in ,chandler ,school4 ,the selections were from standard authors1 and were chosen with the purpose of testing to the utmost the ability of the young contestants4 ,during the past year much interest has been manifested by the pupils in work of this sort1 and most noticeable progress has been made by many of them4 ,at the close of the contest a very interesting and eloquent address on the subject of temperance was given by ,rev4 ,j4 ,s4 ,jackson1 pastor of the ,congregational ,church in ,lexington4 ,the thoughts presented were full of inspiration for all who heard them4 ,on ,wednesday morning an intelligent and appreciative audience assembled in the chapel to listen to the commencement exercises4 ,three young men presented orations1 and three young women essays1 on this occasion4 ,there was but one graduate from the higher normal course4 ,an oration on the subject ,frederick ,douglass1 presented by a young man who had completed the tenth grade1 was considered an unusually creditable student production and elicited much applause4 ,the commencement address was given by the ,rev4 ,w4 ,t4 ,bolling1 ,d4,d41 pastor of the ,southern ,methodist ,church of ,lexington4 ,the speaker prefaced his remarks by saying that much surprise had been expressed by many of his friends that he1 a former slaveholder and an ex-,confederate soldier1 would consent to deliver the commencement address for a school devoted to such a purpose as was ,chandler4 ,he assured these individuals that our school had no warmer friend than he1 nor one more in sympathy with its work4 ,no address could have been more helpful and stimulating than was his4 ,all who had the privilege of listening to it were cheered and edified4 ,at the close of each day's literary exercises the majority of the audience accepted the invitation to examine the work of the sewing-classes on exhibition in one of the recitation-rooms4 ,a large number of articles1 all carefully made by hand1 gave abundant evidence of the industry and skill of the girls of both schools4 ,the closing entertainment of commencement week took place in the chapel on ,wednesday at #h ,p4,m4 ,the programme for that occasion consisted of a cantata entitled ,the ,cadets' ,picnic1 presented by the little pupils of the ,hand ,school4 ,the night was stormy1 but for all that the large chapel of ,chandler ,school was comfortably full4 ,fifty small children1 carefully trained and displaying perfect self-possession1 took part in this entertainment4 ,the teachers of the ,hand ,school had every reason to feel gratified with the results of their work4 ,the teachers of both the ,chandler and ,hand schools have labored diligently for the moral and spiritual upbuilding of their pupils during the past year4 ,the meetings of the ,christian ,endeavor ,society1 held each ,friday morning at #i1 have been productive of the best results4 ,the ,sunday-school work has been very encouraging4 ,chandler and ,hand ,mission ,sabbath-schools together numbered more than two hundred pupils at the close of the year4 ,nearly all of these children were from communities destitute of scheme ,i have witnessed in the ,south for a long time4 ,you have1 ,i suppose1 received one or two copies of our little paper4 ,let me give you a bit of history concerning it4 ,it was a short while after the local option election1 in which the friends and advocates of temperance and good government went down in inglorious defeat before the red-faced saloon-keepers and other votaries of vice1 when the executive committee of the ,prohibs saddled the cause of defeat on the ,negroes' shoulders4 ,the cause of defeat agreed upon1 a few generous-hearted men thought it would be much better to make some kind of effort to elevate the ,negro than to grieve about what was already done4 ,so the idea of a manual training-school was advanced by two gentlemen1 one of whom is a stanch ,southerner1 who for a long time had the unenviable reputation of believing and openly advocating the strange and illogical theory that the ,negro has no soul2 the other is a minister of ,southern birth1 but of ,northern education4 ,infatuated with the prospects of ultimate success1 and having1 it seems providentially1 come upon a man who was a printer and owned an outfit1 they talked with him1 and he1 needing work1 was evidently smitten with the idea4 ,thoroughly understanding themselves1 they sought a conference with a few representative colored men4 ,i was among the first to be interviewed4 ,the minister put the matter before me1 and ,i saw nothing unworthy in it1 and it drew out my sympathy immediately4 ,after talking the whole matter over we agreed to call a meeting4 ,the meeting was called in the well-furnished office of a colored man4 ,there were six present--three white men and three colored men4 ,we talked over the matter again1 each one stating his limitations in the affair4 ,i asked the white gentlemen present if they thought they could stand the sentiment that would doubtless be brought to bear upon them4 ,they said1 ,while we anticipate opposition1 we are sure we can withstand all assaults4 ,then1 said ,i1 we have nothing to lose4 ,the whites were to have a part of the paper and the colored a part--a quarter or a half1 as they might desire4 ,i was asked to take charge of the colored department1 and with reluctance ,i agreed4 ,the paper went through eight issues4 ,the whites interested in it found the pressure too great for them1 and the owner of the outfit found the support entirely too meager4 ,the white editor while in attendance at a church convention was in some cases refused the courtesy of a ,christian introduction4 ,one young woman who was a friend of the editor refused to introduce him to her friend because he was in the newspaper business with a nigger4 ,a banker was asked to subscribe1 but refused1 saying there was too much ---- nigger about that paper for him4 ,the merchants generally refused to advertise in it4 ,after an existence of about eight weeks the paper ceased temporarily or permanently1 ,i know not whether the former or the latter4 ,when ,i talked with the originator of the idea he candidly confessed3 ,i was born in the ,south1 held slaves in the ,south1 have lived in the ,south all my life1 but the prejudice among the white people against the ,negroes is greater than ,i thought4 ,while ,i am entirely independent of public opinion1 the reflection on my friends ,mr4 ---- and ,dr4 ---- has been very great4 99 99 there to school1 though not having any immediate support ,i could not attend until the above-named time4 ,just two days before ,i entered the school ,i had accepted a position as clerk1 but seeing the great need of an education ,i quit immediately and entered school4 ,when ,i entered ,emerson ,i had not been in school for about seven years1 but had to some extent been engaged in study4 ,i had no sure means of support1 but was determined to educate myself4 ,our principal1 seeing my earnestness1 gave me the privilege of living at the ,home1 which enabled me to work out my board and tuition4 ,i gladly accepted4 ,and it is here the lasting influence began its effect upon me4 ,indeed1 ,i cannot state the first impression made1 but ,i do know the best2 that is1 it was here ,i became a be able to stand the many temptations that would come upon me4 ,the next best thing1 it was here 7at ,emerson7 ,i was made to realize the evil effect of alcoholic liquors1 and when1 as before that time1 ,i had some toleration for wine1 etc41 ,i pledged myself against it and became a strong defender of ,prohibition4 ,i was fortunate in being awarded a prize for the best-made speech on ,prohibition in a contest given by ,emerson ,institute on ,may #bb1 #ahid2 and ,i almost decided to become a temperance lecturer4 ,it is impossible for me to enumerate the myriad of good influences that have surrounded me by being a student in ,mobile4 ,but permit me to say that if there is any one thing in earth that ,i owe for my stableness in that which is right1 it is my having been immediately under the good influences of ,emerson ,institute and its earnest teachers4 ,i have been made to see the power of a good education4 ,my mind1 heart1 and soul have been broadened2 and now ,i am able to look upon humanity from a broader point of view4 ,it has certainly given me a more congenial spirit1 and wherein ,i may have been conceited1 ,i am not now4 ,one very important influence is ,cumberland plateau4 ,on the east1 the trees shut out everything but the sky4 ,we are about #hjj feet above the sea-level1 giving a most delightful and salubrious atmosphere4 ,the moral atmosphere is equally good4 ,the nearest place for liquors and their accompanying vices is in the valley beneath4 ,the ,congregational ,church was organized at this place on ,october #ae1 #ahhe1 under the superintendency of the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,the congregation was composed wholly of people from the ,northern ,states1 who had come to the mountains seeking health4 ,these1 to the number of about twenty-five families1 form the neighborhood of ,grand ,view4 ,outside of this place are to be found the people of the mountains1 scattered across the mountain-top1 in a little clearing here and another there4 ,in the midst of the woods1 during the summer1 it is a discovery to find the log house1 the home of the mountaineer4 ,the occupation of all is farming4 ,there is no other means for a livelihood4 ,many of the church members own their own homes2 usually two-story frame buildings4 ,during the present pastorate twenty-one have united with the church2 fourteen by letter1 seven by confession4 ,out of this number we have nine who are mountaineers1 the first acquisition of the native element to the church4 ,we have a small but neat building1 seating #aej1 in which services are held every ,sunday morning and evening4 ,a ,christian ,endeavor ,society embraces a large number of the young people for whom we labor4 ,this church is in connection with a large and flourishing school4 ,the students come to us from three ,states1 and thus the influence of the ,american ,missionary ,association is scattered far and wide4 ,we are the center of a large but poor class of people who have no means to help themselves4 ,if they are ever to help themselves1 they must receive a start from outside4 ,when they do get a chance they usually go ahead4 ,we have among our students many teachers of the public schools lifting the tone of the whole mountain4 ,last year about sixteen of the students taught school during the vacation1 covering a territory from ,red ,belt1 ,georgia1 to ,cumberland ,plateau1 ,tennessee4 ,several lawyers1 former students1 are now practicing at the bar in ,tennessee and other ,states4 ,to our honor one of our graduates is a missionary in ,china2 many have gone forth to usefulness4 ,many1 if not all1 of these would have been unable to do anything for themselves but for the benevolence of the churches and the planting of the school and church in this place4 ,the ideas with which the ,association set out to work are no longer theories1 but established facts4 ,the success of the ,association1 ,i believe1 lies1 next to ,god's blessing1 in the fact that they realized that not only the school is needed to make better men and women1 but also the church to fit these men and women for the struggles of life4 ,both together are needed to do the work4 ,in this place1 where the work which this society is doing touches every fiber of our national life1 that which produced the sterling manhood of ,new ,england in the past days1 and made our national life a possibility and then a fact1 can1 in a like manner in the future1 produce such men and women on the mountains and in the valleys of the ,south4 ,such a work should give hope and courage to every friend of this ,association1 and ,i believe that in the last day it will be a great surprise to many to know how many homes they have helped to brighten1 and how many lives they have see that those brethren who had not been baptized should come to baptism4 #b4 ,to urge those scholars who ought to join the ,congregational ,association of ,christian ,chinese to do so at once4 #c4 ,to strengthen and stimulate the brethren1 not only to stand firm in their faith1 but to press forward to save men through ,christ4 #d4 ,to urge them to give generously to our work4 #e4 ,to preach on the street1 that ,i might lead some one or more to ,jesus4 ,at ,marysville ,i lost no time in getting the names of those who had not been baptized1 and who seemed ready for baptism2 then the names of pupils who ought to join the association4 ,then ,i enlisted the co-operation of the baptized ,christians4 ,we just surrounded four of our brethren and urged them to give themselves publicly and wholly to ,christ4 ,they objected that they would like just to know more1 but they had been under instruction between one and two years1 and had confessed themselves believers six or more months ago by joining the association4 ,we thought them well qualified to receive baptism4 ,finally they consented1 and then we all shook hands and rejoiced4 ,they were baptized by ,dr4 ,pond the following ,sunday evening1 when after the anniversary we received the ,lord's ,supper and listened to ,dr4 ,pond's sermon on our motto for the year1 ,ye shall be baptized with the ,holy ,ghost4 ,the method of winning the three pupils for the ,association was the same only with the added efforts of all present4 ,the contribution was generous4 ,at my first mention of this matter they all held up their pledge-cards1 duly signed1 and with the amounts they were able to give written upon them4 ,on ,sunday afternoon we held a street meeting1 which all the brethren who could attended1 and all helped4 ,the next day 7,monday7 two ,marysville brethren went with us to ,oroville at their own expense4 ,the weather was intensely hot1 but this did not prevent a cordial welcome to us1 both at the depot and at the ,mission4 ,and here we settled down to work just as we did at ,marysville4 ,the result was that three brethren were baptized and one scholar joined the association4 ,the new brother is an educated young man1 but was a great devotee of gambling1 at which he has generally lost money4 ,on my first visit to ,oroville1 two years ago1 ,i admonished him to quit this bad habit and become a ,christian4 ,he frankly acknowledged the sin1 but was reluctant to cease from it till he could win back what he had lost4 ,so ,i could not persuade him4 ,and when ,i reached ,oroville this time ,i was made sad at hearing that he was still a gambler1 though still a pupil in the school4 ,he came to the ,mission house that evening at about #aj o'clock1 and1 after hand-shaking1 sat down in a corner of the room4 ,seeing in this a fine opportunity1 ,i said to the brethren present1 ,let us gather about ,jee ,loy and win him to ,christ to-night4 ,there were six of us1 myself included4 ,we asked him what objection he had to becoming a ,christian4 ,he mentioned many1 but we disposed of them all1 not1 however1 without talking for nearly two hours4 ,during the brethren's turns to speak ,i prayed in my heart many times1 invoking ,god's help on our words1 and begging that his heart might be opened to the truth and to ,christ4 ,but he still refused4 ,i then said to him1 ,will you go home and think the matter over very carefully and let us know to-morrow evening8 ,he said that he would4 ,a prayer was offered and he went home4 ,we were overjoyed when he came the next evening to tell us that he had decided for ,christ and would join the association1 which he did at once4 ,we were all filled with thanksgiving4 ,three other things made us glad3 7#a7 ,the addition of three brethren to our ,bethany ,church in ,oroville2 7#b7 the steadfastness and boldness of our brethren as shown at the street preaching service2 and 7#c7 their generosity4 ,for when ,i spoke to them about ,senator ,george ,c4 ,perkins and his allowing them to occupy this building for twenty years without charging a cent of rent1 or even our paying the taxes upon it1 and suggested that they make him a life member of our ,california ,chinese ,mission1 as quick as lightning ,yes1 ,yes6 was heard all over the room4 ,in a very short time the whole amount of #be was subscribed2 and they intend1 with ,god's help1 to make ,mrs4 ,perkins a life member next year4 ,the anniversaries at ,marysville and ,oroville were the best we ever had in either place4 ,the ,lord's ,supper1 in each case1 was observed at the mission after the anniversary service closed1 and this was followed by ,dr4 ,pond's discourse1 so that the services did not end till about #aa4cj o'clock4 ,at ,oroville1 even after this1 a pleasant social was held1 and we tried to bring another to ,christ1 but did not succeed2 and finally1 the night being so nearly gone1 and the morning train for ,san ,francisco starting at #d o'clock1 we did not go to bed at all1 but strolled through ,chinatown and enjoyed the cool night air after a hot1 laborious day4 ,at ,watsonville we had similar exercises1 and the joy of extending our fellowship to ,dr4 ,quon ,hun1 a highly educated ,chinese physician1 who had attended our school for several months1 and who1 after studying the ,lord's ,prayer all alone1 was led into the light of ,christ1 and composed a beautiful ,chinese poem upon it4 ,he had charge of the tablets of one of the ,tongs1 and had also his own private shrine in his office4 ,but he returned the tablets and destroyed his own idols4 ,he is a man greatly respected1 and will be able to do a great work for ,christ1 though doubtless he will encounter much odium and persecution4 99 99 99 99 99 ,bureau of ,woman's ,work4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,association ,,jubilee4 ,,by ,,sec4 ,d4 ,e4 ,,emerson4 ,not long after emancipation a freed-woman1 about #ej years old1 who was learning to read1 came to the word unbound in her lesson1 and exclaimed1 rapturously1 ,how good1 to feel unbound6 ,if the ,american ,missionary ,association1 its work1 principles1 and all that it represents1 could be expressed in one word1 that word would be emancipation--deliverance from bondage1 deliverance from caste prejudice1 from ignorance1 superstition1 and darkness4 ,its mission is to preach the gospel to the poor1 to loose the chains of the bound1 to proclaim ,the truth shall make you free4 ,it was a little company of earnest men and women that gathered in ,albany1 ,n4 ,y41 in ,september1 #ahdf1 to form this organization4 ,its early history was not only of works1 but of witness1 fearless and undaunted4 ,it had a ,god-given mission1 and this conviction sustained its brave adherents during those years of severe trial and testing4 ,yet all was not discouragement4 ,every year brought added strength in numbers and in funds4 ,every year showed more plainly that the hand of the ,lord was in this movement4 ,so it worked for fifteen years1 gaining varied experience in industrial1 educational1 evangelistic1 and church work1 in methods of administration1 in wise use of funds4 ,at the close of this period it was conducting prosperous missions at thirty-seven stations in its foreign field1 and in the home field it had under its care #abj churches4 ,then came the rebellion and war1 and the unmistakable call of ,providence to the rapid development of missions southward4 ,immediately the ,association1 now encouraged and supported by all the churches1 moved in the wake of the ,union army1 beginning in #ahfa to work for the contrabands at ,fortress ,monroe1 where #a1hjj colored people had sought the protection of the ,american flag4 ,all its varieties of experience and resources were called into action4 ,it became a philanthropic society to feed and clothe the suffering1 a ,bible society to distribute the word of ,god4 ,it became an industrial society to help people to homes and teach practical farming1 trades1 and housewifery4 ,it established social settlements1 with groups of missionary teachers living in one household among the degraded and despised people1 to whom they ministered2 an educational society with its system of schools2 a church society1 seeking always the salvation of souls and gathering of converts into churches4 ,now it was that the wisdom1 the heroism1 the unfaltering faith of this ,association1 strengthened by fifteen years of valorous adherence to the gospel principles of emancipation1 prepared it to launch out upon its great mission4 ,the demands were almost overwhelming in extent and variety4 ,first1 ,fortress ,monroe1 then ,norfolk and all eastern ,virginia1 ,newport ,news1 and ,port ,royal2 then the ,carolinas1 ,mississippi1 and ,tennessee4 ,so closely did the missions follow the victorious armies that by the time the war-storm had fully cleared away1 the ,american ,missionary ,association had #cbj missionaries preaching and teaching the gospel to the freedmen1 with #af1jjj pupils in its schools4 ,no wonder that it was said1 ,behold how ,god has fitted this ,association for this vast and mighty work4 ,the development of this marvelous work has many thrilling chapters among the forty-nine that have been already written4 ,they tell the story briefly of the devoted men and women who have been carrying on the blessed work of emancipation4 ,they show how not less than #c1jjj women have given of their best talent and strength to this ,christ-like service4 ,they speak of the perils by shotgun and by fire2 of imprisonment1 ostracism1 and scorn2 of persecution1 that it was believed the progress of the age had made impossible in these later days1 but which the ,state of ,florida has been able to revive4 ,but these chapters tell also how the truth has been setting many free1 blacks and whites alike1 bringing them into a truer conception of ,god's fatherhood1 man's brotherhood through sonship by ,jesus ,christ4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association finds its highest testimonial in the work itself1 in its system of ,christian schools1 including graded primaries1 academies1 normal and industrial schools1 in its colleges in each of five states1 and in its advancing church work4 ,nay1 its best testimonial is in the product from these schools and churches1 the teachers and preachers1 lawyers and doctors1 the good farmers and mechanics1 the upright mothers and fathers1 the sweet though humble homes1 the conscientious ,christian citizens1 in whose influence and leadership lies the hope of the ,african race4 ,it finds its testimonial in the loyalty and devotion of its missionaries1 their self-denial for the cause they love4 ,it has seen a gifted woman from a home of comfort going year by year for twenty years to this work of emancipation for the bound in ,georgia and ,tennessee1 among a despised people1 and1 when called from earth and earth's opportunities1 leaving a liberal sum to continue the work of ,christian education4 ,it has seen many another consecrated missionary take from the savings of a lifetime1 to enable the ,association to light one more lamp for the dark places of the ,south1 and not a few turn back three-fourths of their small salaries to help in sustaining the work4 ,the liberality of the missionaries testifies not only to the genuineness of the work1 but to the importance of the field and its irresistible appeal4 ,with such a history the ,american ,missionary ,association stands before the churches in this1 its fiftieth1 year4 ,god has graciously widened the fields before it4 ,the #d1jjj1jjj of freed slaves are a race of #h1jjj1jjj in our midst4 ,never since the apostolic age has there been open to the church a field so vast1 so urgent1 so hopeful4 ,god has graciously widened the mission fields of the ,association2 the mountain regions of the ,south have been opened1 and the gospel1 carried with such personal risk fifty years ago1 reaching only here and there a few1 may be carried freely to the #b1jjj1jjj of our mountain countrymen mentally and spiritually bound4 ,god has graciously widened the fields4 ,the ,indian missions present their claim1 for wherever a pagan ,indian tribe remains there may the gospel be carried quickly and without personal harm4 ,the providential call has been heard also1 and answered by this ,association1 for the ,chinese within our borders and the ,eskimo on the ,alaskan coast4 ,the work of this ,association may well be the glory of the churches4 ,god has done ,his part4 ,he has opened the fields1 ,he has richly blessed every effort toward enlightenment and ,christian civilization4 ,the missionaries have done their part in prayer1 in labor1 in gifts1 in voicing the earnest appeal of these poor1 whose greatest need is ,christian education and a pure gospel4 ,now1 the ,association has come to its fiftieth year1 the fiftieth chapter in its serial history4 ,standing always for emancipation1 it is itself enthralled in the toils of a terrible debt4 ,it trusted the churches2 it believed that the action of the churches in separating their ,indian work from the government1 relinquishing #bb1jjj1 would be followed by #bb1jjj additional gifts from the people of ,god1 that the ,indian missions should not suffer loss4 ,it believed that the growing claim of the ,southern mountain work and the claim of this great ,african race in our midst would not be disregarded4 ,it still believes in the churches4 ,there has been only a temporary withholding4 ,in the sisterhood of missionary societies1 two have been freed from debt4 ,now by one grand concentration of gifts to the ,jubilee ,fund of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 shall it not be enabled to celebrate a remarkable record1 a marvelous work1 a divine call to present widening fields of usefulness and a jubilee of financial freedom that by the grace of ,god shall last8 ,may we not then confidently look for the opening of the windows of heaven1 and the outpouring of such a blessing on home churches and mission fields as shall summon the attention of an indifferent and unbelieving world to the certain and rapid progress of the kingdom
