safe and still asleep4 ,the best friend we have on earth is a good mother4 ,she thinks of her children at all times4 ,she loves them and lives for them4 ,she seems to know all about our little cares and trials4 ,when we are willing to help her1 it shows that we think of her and love her1 too4 ,have you ever thought how she toils and cares for you8 ,she works for you every day--gets your meals1 breakfast1 dinner1 and supper2 washes and mends your clothes and stockings2 and at night makes your pillow nice and soft for you so you can sleep well4 ,she seems to know just what to do if we happen ,now ,i will tell you of another friend4 ,this friend lives in heaven4 ,his name is ,god4 ,we can not see ,god1 but he looks down from heaven and sees us4 ,he sees everything we do1 and hears everything we say4 ,he knows all things4 ,it was ,god who made this earth where we live1 and everything that has life4 ,we pray to ,god1 and he hears us and answers our prayers4 ,illustration ,now ,i lay me down to sleep2 ,i pray ,thee1 ,lord1 my soul to keep4 ,thy love be with me through the night1 ,and bless me with the morning light4 ,the ,good ,book ,the ,bible is a good book4 ,in it we read about ,god1 and about his making the earth1 sun1 moon1 stars1 trees1 flowers1 rocks1 water1 birds1 fishes1 animals1 and man4 ,we read of ,adam and ,eve1 the first man and woman2 of their beautiful home1 the ,garden of ,eden2 and also of their children and their children's children4 ,in it there are many1 many stories about how ,god helped people in times of trial4 ,we also read about ,jesus1 the ,son of ,god1 who came down from heaven and died for us1 that we might have eternal life4 ,good men wrote the ,bible long1 long ago1 and the contents have been kept1 until now we all have ,bibles4 ,the ,bible is called ,holy ,bible because it is ,god's ,word1 and is a record of ,god's work and ,god's words4 ,if we live now as the ,bible teaches1 after we die we shall receive a crown of life in heaven4 ,illustration ,what ,god ,made ,our ,god is a very great ,god4 ,he made all things4 ,he made this earth where we now live4 ,it seems strange that there was a time1 many1 many years ago1 when this earth was nowhere to be found2 but that is so4 ,when men make things1 they must have tools to work with4 ,they have to make things little by little1 working at them a long time before they are done4 ,it was not so with ,god when he made this earth4 ,he spake1 and it was done4 ,at first all was dark4 ,he then said1 ,let there be light1 and it was light4 ,he called the light day1 and the darkness he called night4 ,this1 the ,good ,book says1 took place on the first day4 ,on the second day ,god made the air we breathe1 and in which the birds fly4 ,on the third day he made the land1 sea1 and rivers1 and the grass1 flowers1 and trees4 ,on the fourth day he made the sun1 moon1 and stars1 to give light to the earth by day and night4 ,illustration ,on the fifth day he made the fish that swim in the water and the birds that fly in the air4 ,on the sixth day he made all the animals1 and at last he made man4 ,he gave them for food the grain of the fields1 the fruits of the trees1 and the vegetables of the garden4 ,on the seventh day ,god rested from all the work which he had made4 ,and ,god saw everything that he had made1 and1 behold1 it was very good4 ,in the ,garden of ,eden ,when the ,garden of ,eden was planted with all the beautiful flowers and trees1 ,god gave it to ,adam for a home4 ,he told him to take good care of it4 ,adam was glad to work in the garden and use it as he chose2 but he had no one to enjoy the things that he enjoyed1 no one to help him to be just what ,god wished him to be1 no one to love4 ,illustration ,god said1 ,it is not good that the man should be alone3 ,i will make him an help meet for him4 ,so he made a woman and ,adam called her ,eve4 ,eve was very much like ,adam in some ways1 yet unlike him in other ways4 ,man has some gifts that woman does not have2 one is helpful to the other4 ,adam's heart must have been glad to see the woman whom ,god had made for him4 ,he now had some one to enjoy the home with him4 ,adam and ,eve were happy in ,eden as long as they loved ,god more than they loved to have their own way4 ,he knew better than they did what was good for them and what would make them happy1 and they were glad to obey him4 ,but by and by their own way seemed better than ,god's way1 and they did things that ,god had said they should not do4 ,when we do things that ,god says we should not do1 we sin4 ,so ,adam and ,eve sinned1 and were ashamed to see ,god1 and when he came into the garden1 they hid among the trees4 ,illustration3 ,the ,lord hath done great things for us whereof we are glad ,our ,heavenly ,home ,god loves men too well to leave them in sin and sorrow4 ,and though we have sinned1 he will forgive us if we are sorry for our sins and ask his pardon4 ,he will give us good thoughts1 and help us to love him and to love one another4 ,we shall all die1 but we shall live again2 and if we serve ,god in this life and are ,christians1 we shall live with him in heaven4 ,there we shall never sin and never die4 ,we shall never be sick or sad2 we shall be happy forever4 ,there we shall see ,god4 ,jesus will be there1 and so will all the good people who have ever lived4 ,god saw that the people he had made were doing wrong1 and he had pity on the whole world of sinners4 ,so he sent his only ,son to this earth as the ,savior of the world4 ,you will find somewhere in this book how ,god's ,son came to this world4 ,the ,day and ,night ,god made the sun to give light by day4 ,the sun not only gives us light1 but also makes the earth warm and causes everything to grow4 ,sometimes when the sun rises in the morning1 it looks very close1 but it is really far away--away off in the sky4 ,when the sun goes down in the evening1 darkness comes all around us4 ,this is called night4 ,we do not want all daytime1 in which to work and play2 neither do we want all nighttime1 in which to sleep2 but we enjoy both the day and the night as ,god made them4 ,illustration ,also1 we see the moon and the stars4 ,when the moon is full and round1 how large and pretty it looks6 ,god made the moon and stars to shine at night4 ,have you ever noticed the stars twinkle at night8 ,how pretty they are6 ,there are so many of them that we could never count them all4 ,at one time some shepherds saw a beautiful large star2 it was a sign that the ,savior of the world was born4 ,the ,rain and the ,snow ,patter1 little drops of rain1 ,patter on the window-pane4 ,how ,i love to watch them pass ,in their races down the glass6 ,soon the shower will be o'er1 ,then the sun will shine once more4 ,but ,i love to hear the rain ,beat against the window-pane4 ,soft and gentle ,april showers ,will bring ,may-time's pretty flowers4 ,i think it is pleasant to sit by the window and watch the rain as it falls1 sometimes in tiny drops and sometimes in large ones4 ,the warm showers make the grass1 trees1 and flowers grow4 ,after the shower is over1 the grass looks fresh and green4 ,the birds also seem to be glad for the rain4 ,they chirp among the trees when the shower is over4 ,we see the pretty clouds in the sky4 ,the wind moves them about4 ,sometimes a storm comes1 and then we see the lightning and hear the thunder4 ,illustration3 ,,playing ,,in ,,the ,,leaves ,when winter-time comes1 it gets cold1 and the ground is all covered with pure-white crystals of snow4 ,everything looks so clean and pretty with its white coat on4 ,we see the little snowbirds flying around1 and they are so happy picking up seeds for food4 ,then we love to get on our mittens and warm coats1 and go out in the snow1 too4 ,people hitch horses to sleighs and enjoy rides4 ,they put bells on the horses1 and these jingle merrily when the horses go fast4 ,illustration ,in the far north it gets very cold1 and when the people go anywhere1 they hitch dogs to sleds4 ,in the ,bible we read that the ,lord will make our hearts white as snow if we confess our sins and take him for our ,savior4 ,illustration ,beautiful snow1 so soft and so white1 ,sparkling like gems in the sunshine bright1 ,robing the earth and decking the trees1 ,sent by the ,lord1 the children to please4 ,winter's ,blessings ,pretty little snowflakes ,falling to the ground2 ,here is one1 there is one1 ,ev'rywhere they're found4 ,illustration ,see them fall so gently ,through the frosty air2 ,every little snowflake ,has its beauties rare4 ,soon the ground is covered1 ,with the pretty snow2 ,then we see the snowbirds ,flying to and fro4 ,do you think the snowbirds ,like the wintry day8 ,do you think they're happy ,as they chirp and play8 ,happy little creatures-- ,do not reap or sow1 ,yet the ,master feeds them1 ,even in the snow4 ,jesus made the birdies ,blessings to enjoy2 ,then1 oh1 do not harm them1 ,little girl or boy4 ,in the pleasant evenings1 ,then the rabbits go ,through the woods and bushes1 ,playing in the snow4 ,all the night they ramble1 ,but at break of day ,they must hunt a refuge1 ,there to hide away4 ,so these little creatures ,love the fallen snow2 ,should not we enjoy it1 ,who ,god's blessings know8 ,illustration3 ,love thy neighbor as thyself4 ,rom4 #ac3i4 ,should we ever murmur1 ,should we e'er today1 ,lovely ,may6 ,you may have helped your papa or mama plant seeds in the garden or in the flowerbed4 ,the warm sun and the rain make them grow rapidly4 ,we do not plant weed-seeds1 but in some way they get into the ground1 and come up along with the garden-plants4 ,if the weeds are not cut out1 they will crowd out the good plants4 ,illustration3 ,,an ,,act ,,of ,,kindness ,when we do little acts of kindness1 it is like planting good seed4 ,when we are not kind1 and say bad words1 it is like letting the weeds crowd out the good plants4 ,if you are good and kind to papa and mama1 brother or sister1 today1 you will find it easy to be kind to them tomorrow4 ,it makes you happy to be good to those around you4 ,if you are cross and say bad words1 you may want to say them again4 ,you can not feel happy when you have said and done bad things4 ,god can help you sow good seed4 ,he will help you to be good4 ,he will help you to love all around you4 ,flowers of ,springtime ,how pretty and sweet are the apple1 peach1 pear1 plum1 cherry1 and orange blossoms6 ,how good ,god was to make all these things for us to see and smell6 ,we can enjoy the blossoms4 ,also1 we can see the little apples or other fruit grow until they become large1 juicy1 ripe fruit4 ,then we can eat them1 and oh1 how good they will taste6 ,god is very good to us4 ,illustration ,not a leaf nor a blade of grass could grow if ,god's hand did not care for it4 ,he causes the warm sun to shine and the gentle rains to fall so that everything can grow4 ,things could not grow without the warm sun and the rain4 ,god has caused the wild flowers to grow along the road-side and in the woods and meadows so we can enjoy them4 ,how glad we should be that we have such a good ,god to worship6 ,when we kneel to pray1 we can say1 ,o ,lord1 ,i thank thee for all the pretty things ,i see each day4 ,the pretty things are some of the blessings that he daily gives us4 ,a ,walk in the ,woods ,have you ever taken a walk through the woods by the brook on a warm day8 ,how cool and pleasant the water looked as it ran along over the rocks6 ,did it not make a pleasing sound8 ,illustration ,it is delightful to go through the woods where you can see the beautiful trees4 ,you can nearly always find some flowers growing along the edge of the brook4 ,besides1 the little birds fly among the trees and sing so sweetly4 ,almost any child would enjoy a walk through the woods4 ,but there are many children in large cities who never have the pleasure of going to the woods4 ,illustration ,how pleasant it is to sit down in a cool1 shady place1 and think of the lovely things that ,god has given us to enjoy4 ,as we look around us1 we can see so many blessings that ,god has given us4 ,illustration ,even the little birds and flowers seem to be telling us that ,jesus loves us4 ,god has made many beautiful things for us to enjoy4 ,it makes us happy to see the beautiful flowers1 and to hear the little birds sing so sweetly4 ,our ,feathered ,friends ,when all the trees and bushes and grass are green in the spring1 we see the little birds and hear their sweet songs4 ,how happy they seem as they fly about from tree to tree1 and scratch in the ground to find little seeds and insects to eat6 ,sometimes we find a bird's nest in the bushes or on the ground4 ,god teaches the little birds how to build their nests with small sticks1 leaves1 and feathers4 ,this is the bird's house4 ,we sometimes see tiny eggs in the nest4 ,the little eggs hatch1 and then there are little birdies in the nest in place of the eggs4 ,the mother bird hunts worms and bugs to feed the little ones4 ,illustration ,did you ever see a nest of young birds8 ,how they open their little mouths when you come near6 ,they think you have something for them to eat4 ,illustration ,once a little boy found a meadow-lark's nest with young birds in it4 ,as they opened their little mouths1 he thought he could feed them better than the mother bird4 ,he decided to raise them for pets1 and so carried them home4 ,he fed them bread2 but as the little birds were not used to that kind of food1 they did not thrive on it2 and when one day the boy forgot to feed them1 they died4 ,how sad he felt6 ,and how sad the mother bird must have felt when she could not find her babies6 ,god made the birds to enjoy the woods and fields4 ,we must not destroy their nests1 for that would be wrong4 ,the ,bible says1 ,behold the fowls of the air3 for they sow not1 neither do they reap1 nor gather into barns2 yet your heavenly ,father feedeth them4 ,illustration ,a ,bird of the ,night ,illustration ,did you ever see an owl8 ,owls fly around at night1 as they can see better after dark than in the daytime4 ,they stay in some dark and quiet spot all day1 unless disturbed1 but at night they hunt around for something to eat4 ,they eat some kinds of birds1 rats1 mice1 fish1 reptiles1 and insects4 ,the nest of the owl is made of sticks and twigs1 and is oftentimes built in rocks or ruins or old houses4 ,some owls are as white as snow1 and their feathers are as soft as cotton4 ,some are brown1 and others are gray4 ,sometimes in the night we hear their noise1 which sounds much as if they were saying1 ,who8 who8 who8 ,the owl can not turn his eyes about as we can2 so when he wants to look around1 he must turn his head4 ,in the cold countries where snow stays upon the ground most of the time1 there are owls with pure-white feathers4 ,they are very large1 too2 yet they can hardly be seen1 since they look so much like the snow4 ,illustration ,illustration3 ,,geese ,,the ,,quail ,our ,tame ,birds ,chickens and ducks and geese are birds1 too4 ,but they are tame and stay where people do4 ,they do not fly like the little birds1 but they stay around the barnyard and lay eggs for us to eat4 ,illustration ,ducks and geese love to swim in the water4 ,both the big and the little ones can swim1 but chickens can not4 ,the old mother hen sometimes has many little chicks running around her4 ,they stay pretty close1 because they are afraid that something might harm them4 ,illustration ,chicks are sometimes caught by hawks1 which fly around watching for them4 ,in the picture we see a dog driving a hawk away from the old hen and chickens4 ,don't you think he is a good dog8 ,illustration ,a farmer had a dog whose name was ,ring4 ,even though he was asleep1 if a chicken gave the note of alarm1 he would jump up and bark at once4 ,then he would run after the hawk and drive it away4 ,illustration ,when lying quiet it was amusing to see how quickly he would jump up and bark when any one would say1 ,hawk6 ,wee ,pretty ,kitty ,wee pretty kitty1 ,with nothing to do1 ,only to take ,little naps in a shoe4 ,you look very nice ,while lying in there1 ,with never a thought ,of sorrow or care4 ,yet ,i am so glad ,that ,i am not you1 ,for ,i can love ,jesus1 ,which you can not do4 ,illustration ,creatures of the ,water ,illustration ,fishes are queer creatures that live in water4 ,men catch them with hooks and lines or nets and use them for food4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,guppy ,some fish are very large4 ,we read in the ,bible of a man named ,jonah4 ,he was trying to run away from the ,lord1 who had called him to a work4 ,while on a ship1 during a storm he was thrown into the water4 ,but he did not drown1 for a great fish swallowed him1 and carried him ashore4 ,he then knew that ,god meant what he said1 and so did as ,god had commanded4 ,there are hundreds of different kinds of fishes1 and many1 many men earn their living by catching and selling them for food4 ,some of ,christ's disciples were fishermen when he called them4 ,he told them that he would make them fishers of men4 ,this meant that he would prepare them to help other people to become ,christians4 ,illustration ,our ,tame ,animals ,there are some kinds of animals that are tame1 as the sheep1 hog1 cow1 horse1 dog1 and cat4 ,illustration ,the horse is a faithful beast and does much work for man4 ,he draws the heavy loads on the road and works in the fields4 ,we hitch him to a wagon or a carriage and enjoy a ride1 or we can put a saddle upon his back and ride there also4 ,the cow gives us milk for our food1 and from the milk we get cream1 butter1 and cheese4 ,the flesh of the hog is valuable for food4 ,the dogs are useful to guard our homes1 and cats catch mice and rats4 ,both dogs and cats make good pets4 ,sheep have long wool all over their bodies1 and men cut it off and use it to make clothes to keep us warm4 ,young sheep are called lambs4 ,they like to run and play very much4 ,in the picture we see a lamb that has fallen into the water4 ,the mother sheep stands close by and watches the man trying to pull the lamb out4 ,i suppose the man had missed these two from the flock4 ,he was in search of the lost ones1 and seeing the mother standing near the water1 he came and found the lamb nearly drowned4 ,the mother would not leave her babe1 but waited a long time until help came4 ,illustration ,lambs are innocent-looking animals1 and do not make a noise when hurt4 ,jesus said that children are his lambs4 ,little ,foxes ,foxes are wild animals4 ,they live in the woods and swamps1 in places where not many people live4 ,they are very cunning and sly1 and catch young chickens1 ducks1 turkeys1 and geese whenever they can4 ,night is the time when they slip around and catch these barnyard fowls4 ,they carry the fowls off to their holes in the ground1 and eat them there4 ,little foxes are very destructive1 and often spoil grape-vines4 ,in the ,bible we read that it is the little foxes that spoil the vines4 ,this also means that our little unkind words and actions spoil the peace in our lives and make us feel bad4 ,let us be careful that our words and deeds do not make ourselves or others unhappy4 ,if we live to please ,god1 we shall please ,god's people1 and we shall not have to feel sorry on account of some bad words said or deeds done4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,pet ,,pony ,the ,squirrels ,when the frosts have colored the leaves of the trees of the woods with many hues1 and the nuts have ripened and fallen to the ground1 it is then that the squirrels gather a good supply of the different kinds of nuts and acorns into their little homes in the hollow trees1 to be eaten during the many long days of winter4 ,have you ever seen a squirrel8 ,they love to play in the woods1 and run among the branches of the trees1 and jump from one limb to another4 ,god made the squirrels to enjoy the woods1 and he has provided the nuts for them to eat4 ,illustration3 ,,feeding ,,the ,,squirrels ,the ,shepherds ,a shepherd is a man who takes care of sheep4 ,during the day he watches them while they are eating grass1 and in the evening he takes them to their fold or barn4 ,now1 we read in the ,bible that an angel of the ,lord appeared to some shepherds in the night4 ,the shepherds were very much afraid1 but the angel said to them3 ,fear not3 for1 behold1 ,i bring you good tidings of great joy1 which shall be to all people4 ,for unto you is born this day in the city of ,david a ,savior1 which is ,christ the ,lord4 ,and this shall be a sign unto you2 ,ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling-clothes1 lying in a manger4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,angel',s ,,appearance ,and suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising ,god1 and saying1 ,glory to ,god in the highest and on earth peace1 good will toward men4 ,the babe's name was ,jesus1 who came as a ,savior to all the world4 ,jesus ,as a ,child ,illustration ,god1 who is in heaven1 was full of pity for the unhappy people of earth4 ,he loved them so much that he sent his ,son to the earth in the form of a child1 a baby in his mother's arms4 ,he came to earth to show us how to obey ,god--how to live so as to do good in this life and be happy both in this life and in the life to come4 ,he came as a child1 so as to show children how to live4 ,he came like other children1 and grew up as other children do1 only better and wiser4 ,when ,god sent his ,son to the earth1 he gave him into the care of two good people who lived in a small town called ,nazareth4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,boy ,,christ ,,with ,,the ,,wise ,,men ,when ,jesus came to them1 they were in ,bethlehem4 ,they had gone there on a journey4 ,there was no room for them in the inn2 so they had to stay in a place made for cattle4 ,god was not ashamed to place his ,son in the care of poor people4 ,he was not ashamed to have him born in a stable and cradled in a manger4 ,a bright star appeared over the place where the young child lay1 and by this sign the wise men that came from the east seeking him were enabled to find him4 ,the ,good ,shepherd ,jesus once lived on this very same earth on which we live4 ,he walked through grain-fields4 ,he climbed mountains4 ,he noticed the birds and flowers1 and watched the fishermen and farmers and shepherds4 ,he used the things he saw to teach lessons to his disciples and others who came to hear him4 ,illustration ,in the land of ,palestine1 where he lived1 sheep-raising was very common4 ,he said at one time3 ,i am the good ,shepherd1 and know my sheep4 ,my sheep hear my voice1 and they follow me4 ,illustration ,he was trying to show the people that he was just as anxious to help people live right and to keep them from danger as the kind shepherds who watched over their flocks upon the hills of ,palestine were anxious to keep their sheep from harm at all times4 ,illustration3 ,,jesus ,,teaching ,,the ,,way ,,of ,,salvation ,at another time ,jesus spoke of the lambs and compared them to children4 ,jesus went into meeting-houses and taught the people4 ,many times he brought joy to the hearts of fathers and mothers by healing their sick children4 ,he did good wherever he went4 ,he was always trying to help those in trouble4 ,he was the best and greatest man who has ever lived4 ,illustration ,reading and studying about him will help us to stand for the right and to do good1 kind deeds4 ,we are his sheep if we are ,christians1 and the way we follow ,jesus now is by reading the ,bible and living a ,christian life4 ,illustration ,jesus gave his life for his sheep while he was here on earth4 ,now he is up in heaven1 but he loves the people who follow him1 and is still our ,good ,shepherd4 ,illustration3 ,,learning ,,of ,,jesus ,parable of the ,sower ,jesus taught many spiritual lessons by parables1 that is1 by stories about the common things people could understand4 ,illustration ,one day as he sat by the sea of ,galilee1 he told the people the parable of the ,sower4 ,the sower cast some seed by the wayside1 that is1 along the edge of the field or road-side4 ,some seed fell upon stony ground1 some among thorns1 and some on good ground4 ,the people did not know what he meant till he explained the lesson to them4 ,the great sower is ,jesus1 but all ,christians are sowers under him4 ,the seed is the ,word of ,god4 ,people's hearts are the four kinds of soil4 ,parable of the ,leaven ,among the stories that ,jesus told was the parable of the leaven4 ,a woman put leaven in the flour as a baker puts yeast in his bread dough4 ,the leaven kept working until it affected all the dough and made it rise and become light4 ,as the yeast or leaven goes through all the dough1 so the gospel of ,jesus will go to all the nations in the world4 ,each one who believes on ,jesus enters the kingdom of ,god4 ,the kingdom of ,god is righteousness1 peace1 and joy1 which we get when we become ,christians4 ,illustration ,laborers in the ,vineyard ,jesus told another parable1 a story of the laborers in the vineyard4 ,you can turn in your ,testament to ,matthew #bj3a-af1 and read about the man who hired laborers to work in his vineyard4 ,illustration ,he had agreed to pay the laborers a penny a day4 ,the men who worked all day thought they should receive more than those hired later in the day1 but the master paid them all alike4 ,just so those of us who have been ,christians only a short time will receive the same heavenly reward as those who have lived a ,christian life for years4 ,salvation is just the same to all--it takes sin out of our hearts and fills them with the love of ,god4 ,we must not put off getting saved2 for ,jesus said1 ,watch1 for ye know not the hour when your ,lord doth come4 ,this means that we are liable to die without a warning1 and we should always be ready4 ,the ,wicked ,husbandmen ,another parable is about a man who had a vineyard and let it out to husbandmen4 ,when the time for gathering grapes came1 he sent his servants to the husbandmen that they might receive the fruit4 ,but the husbandmen took his servants and beat one and killed another4 ,he sent other servants1 and they were treated in the same way4 ,last of all he sent his son1 thinking they would honor him1 but they caught him and killed him4 ,illustration ,jesus spoke this parable to the wicked people about himself at that time4 ,christ himself had been sent to the ,jews1 who had been the people of ,god for ages past1 but who had wandered into sin4 ,from time to time ,god had sent good prophets to warn the ,jews1 but often the prophets were persecuted4 ,at last ,god sent ,jesus1 his only ,son1 and him they killed4 ,illustration ,the ,wheat and the ,tares ,christ told another parable4 ,it was of a man who sowed good seed in his field2 but while the servants slept1 an enemy came and sowed tares1 or weeds1 and then went away so that the servants knew nothing of it4 ,when the wheat grew1 the tares also grew4 ,when the servants noticed the tares1 they asked the owner what it meant1 as they sowed only good seed4 ,he answered that an enemy had sown the tares4 ,but he said that they should let both grow till the harvest1 and that then the tares would be gathered and burned1 but the wheat gathered into the barn4 ,illustration ,jesus explained this3 ,the field1 he said1 means the world2 the owner means ,jesus himself2 the wheat means the persons who become ,christians2 the tares are sowed by ,satan2 and the weeds are wicked men4 ,the wicked men and ,christians are together here in this world1 but at the judgment-day the righteous will go to heaven and the wicked will be punished4 ,illustration ,the ,king's ,marriage-,feast ,another parable was of a king's marriage-feast4 ,the king invited certain ones to the feast1 but they would not come2 so he made an open invitation and sent his servants into the highways to invite as many as they could find1 and these people came4 ,god sent ,jesus to the world1 and he invited the ,jews to accept the kingdom of ,god1 but they would not4 ,though some ,jews accepted ,jesus1 yet as a nation they did not1 and ,god was displeased with them for it4 ,when the ,jews would not accept ,jesus1 ,god extended the invitation to the ,gentiles1 or all other people4 ,god now has the feast prepared4 ,he invites people to come to ,jesus and have their hearts made pure and enjoy the rich blessings of the kingdom--righteousness1 joy1 and peace4 ,he extends the invitation to all4 ,if we will not give heed to his invitation to accept ,jesus1 we shall be left out of the kingdom1 and others will take our place4 ,illustration ,a ,lesson on ,forgiveness ,illustration ,the man kneeling in the picture owed the king hundreds and hundreds of dollars4 ,he had no money to pay the king4 ,the king said that this man and his wife and children must be sold and the money used to pay the debt4 ,the man begged the king to wait a while1 promising that by and by he would give him the money4 ,the king then felt sorry for the poor man and said the man would not need to pay him any money4 ,the man arose and walked away4 ,soon he met a friend who owed him a little money4 ,he spoke harshly to the friend and told him to pay the money4 ,the friend did not have any money4 ,he kneeled down before the man and said1 ,wait a while1 and by and by ,i will give you the money4 ,but the man seemed to have forgotten that the king had been kind to him4 ,he had the friend put in jail4 ,when the king heard about this1 he did not like it1 and he punished the hard-hearted man4 ,we are like the man in the picture4 ,we ask ,god to be good to us and forgive us when we do wrong4 ,then1 maybe1 we are not good to our little friends when they do wrong to us4 ,if they do a bad thing to us1 we want to pay them back4 ,we should not do this way4 ,jesus said that if we would not forgive others1 ,god would not forgive us4 ,to forgive our friends means to be just as good to them when they do wrong to us as when they do good to us4 ,illustration ,jesus ,loves the ,children ,at one time when ,jesus was teaching the people1 some women brought their children to him for a blessing4 ,the disciples thought the women should not do this1 and thought ,jesus did not wish to be bothered with the children4 ,jesus said1 ,suffer little children1 and forbid them not1 to come unto me2 for of such is the kingdom of heaven4 ,he loved them and held them upon his lap and blessed them4 ,illustration ,at another time he said that unless people become converted and become as little children1 they can not enter the kingdom of heaven4 ,this means that it is necessary for them to have their sins forgiven and to be pure and innocent and free from sin in order to be in ,god's church in this world and to go to heaven after they die4 ,jesus ,heals the ,sick ,jesus spent his whole life doing good4 ,he always helped those who were in trouble4 ,he seemed to know of the sick and suffering of the land and was always anxious to heal them4 ,illustration ,at one time he went into the meeting-place of the ,jews and saw a man there who had a hand so withered that he could not open it or stretch it out4 ,now1 there was a ,jewish law that said no work should be done on the ,sabbath4 ,the wicked people watched ,jesus to see if he would heal this man on the ,sabbath-day4 ,illustration3 ,,healing ,,the ,,blind ,jesus knew their thoughts1 and so he asked the people1 ,if any of you had a sheep which should fall into a pit on the ,sabbath1 would you not help it out8 ,then he said that if it was right to help a sheep1 it was much more so to be good to man4 ,after that he said to the man1 ,stretch out your hand1 and he stretched it out4 ,illustration ,jesus ,nearing ,jerusalem ,one day ,jesus and his disciples were on their way to a great city4 ,this city was ,jerusalem4 ,jesus told them that there many cruel things would be done to him and that he would be killed4 ,the disciples did not think this would happen to ,jesus4 ,they thought he would be a great king and sit on a throne4 ,two of these men were ,james and ,john4 ,they came with their mother and bowed before ,jesus as you see in the picture4 ,james and ,john wanted to be great4 ,they asked ,jesus to let one of them sit on the right side and the other on the left of his throne4 ,jesus told them that the way to be great was to do good1 kind deeds4 ,illustration ,jesus was the greatest person who has ever lived1 and he spent all his life doing good to those who were in need of help4 ,illustration ,as ,jesus and his men went toward the city1 many people went with him4 ,two blind men were sitting by the road4 ,they heard the crowd coming4 ,when they knew that ,jesus was coming1 they asked him to open their eyes4 ,jesus was always ready to help those who were in trouble4 ,he opened the eyes of the two blind men so they could see4 ,jesus ,changed ,many little boys and girls kneel down at mama's knee or by the bed in the evening and pray to ,god4 ,often ,jesus went up on a high hill to pray4 ,in the picture ,jesus is on a hill-top4 ,he went there to pray4 ,he took three of his disciples with him4 ,they were ,peter1 ,james1 and ,john4 ,illustration ,see the two men by the side of ,jesus1 and see how bright ,jesus looks4 ,the two men came from heaven to talk with ,jesus4 ,peter1 ,james1 and ,john had never seen ,jesus look so beautiful before4 ,the ,bible says that his face shone like the sun and that his clothes looked bright like snow when the sun shines upon it4 ,the three disciples heard ,god's voice4 ,the voice said1 ,this is my beloved ,son1 in whom ,i am well pleased2 hear ye him4 ,when they heard it1 they fell on their faces1 for they were afraid4 ,soon the two men went away1 and ,jesus looked as he did before4 ,he touched his disciples and told them not to be afraid4 ,then they went down the hill4 ,they found many people4 ,they saw a poor boy who was sick1 and ,jesus made him well4 ,feeding the ,multitude ,when ,jesus was here on earth1 he preached to the people1 and many listened to his words4 ,he went from place to place talking of ,god1 healing the sick and lame1 and doing much good everywhere he went4 ,at one time when he had been preaching to about five thousand people for a long time1 they all became hungry4 ,there was no food for the people to eat1 except five small loaves of bread and two small fishes4 ,illustration ,but ,jesus blessed the bread and broke it and gave it to the people4 ,they all had all they wanted1 and there was a good portion left4 ,jesus was the ,son of ,god1 and anything he said would be done4 ,so it was with the bread4 ,he multiplied it1 so that the people were all satisfied4 ,illustration ,in the ,bible we read3 ,jesus ,christ the same yesterday1 and today1 and forever4 ,this means that he has just as much power today and can do as much for us as he did when he was here upon earth4 ,the ,death of ,jesus ,many were the good deeds done by ,jesus while he was here on earth1 and many people believed on him and followed him4 ,illustration ,some very wicked men did not like ,jesus and abused him whenever they could4 ,just before they killed him1 they put a crown of thorns on his head1 and the sharp points pierced his brow and were very painful4 ,he was nailed to a large cross1 and was left there until he died4 ,some good men buried him in a stone tomb1 but in three days he arose and afterwards he went up to heaven4 ,illustration ,he died for our sins1 so that we can be saved from our sins in this life and go to live with him when we die4 ,jesus ,our ,savior ,our ,savior is ,jesus4 ,he died to save us from our sins in this world1 and to save us from eternal death when we die4 ,suppose that a girl should be out on the water in a boat and should fall out of it into the water1 and some men close by with a large boat would get to her right away2 they would save her life1 would they not8 ,yes4 ,just so ,jesus came to save us4 ,we were lost because we all have sinned and disobeyed ,god1 but we can be saved from our sins if we ask ,jesus to forgive us4 ,he will forgive our sins and will not hold them against us any more4 ,when our sins are forgiven1 we are ,christians1 and ,jesus will help us to live right from that time on4 ,illustration3 ,,going ,,up ,,to ,,heaven ,we shall not have a desire to do the bad things which so many boys and girls do1 but we shall want to live right and be good4 ,he can keep us from sin every day and hour if we trust him4 ,so ,jesus is our ,savior4 ,moments of ,prayer ,how good it is that all can pray6 ,the ,lord is always waiting to hear and answer our prayers4 ,when we pray1 we talk with ,god2 we must listen closely when he talks to us and do whatever he says4 ,illustration ,when we get ready for bed in the evening1 we should not forget to pray4 ,we should remember that the ,lord has been good to us all the day long4 ,he has kept us from all harm1 and given us food and clothes4 ,we should also thank him for a home and parents and friends4 ,even the air we breathe comes from him4 ,then in the morning we should again kneel down1 and thank ,god for his care through the night4 ,the ,lord loves to hear children pray4 ,after we pray1 we should try hard to be good4 ,the ,lord will surely help us if we ask him4 ,then1 do not forget to pray4 ,illustration3 ,,we ,,reap ,,what ,,we ,,sow ,morning ,praise ,illustration ,father dear1 ,i humbly bow ,by my little bedside now4 ,thou hast kept me through the night1 ,till the morning1 clear and bright2 ,thou hast given rest and sleep2 ,thou dost e'er a vigil keep ,through the silent hours of night ,while the stars and moon are bright4 ,blessed ,father1 through the storm ,thou hast kept me from all harm2 ,and thy loving hand is near1 ,guarding me from harm and fear4 ,help me now1 ,i ask of thee1 ,that my daily walk may be ,like a little ,christian true1 ,in my words1 and actions too2 ,keep me from all harm again ,as thou didst last night4 ,amen4 ,evening ,prayer ,father dear1 ,i humbly bow ,at thy feet and ask thee now3 ,keep me through this dreary night1 ,wake me with the morning's light2 ,let no danger hover near1 ,let no sorrow1 sigh1 or fear ,break my slumber2 but on thee ,let my thoughts and dreamings be4 ,father bless1 and may ,i prove ,that ,i've tasted of thy love4 ,keep my tongue and let me talk ,of thy goodness4 ,help me walk ,as a ,christian every day2 ,keep me ever true1 ,i pray4 ,let no harm or sickness come ,near our happy little home4 ,in thy hands my all ,i lay2 ,may ,i never from thee stray4 ,keep me1 ,lord1 ,i ask again4 ,praise the blessed ,lord6 ,amen4 ,illustration ,asking ,blessing ,o ,lord1 ,i bow ,my little head ,to thank thee for ,my daily bread4 ,i pray thee bless ,this daily food2 ,i pray thee bless ,it to my good4 ,oh1 may my soul ,this day be giv'n ,the ,bread of ,life1 ,sent down from heav'n4 ,oh1 keep me now ,this day from sin1 ,from harm and sickness ,free4 ,amen4 ,visit the ,sick ,do you not know some one who is sick8 ,some little boy or girl may be in bed with a fever1 and would be so glad to see you come into the room with a bunch of flowers or some other little gift4 ,how happy the sick one would be6 ,are you not glad to see your friends when you are sick8 ,it makes you forget some of your pain for a time1 does it not8 ,when we give a bunch of flowers to a friend1 a teacher1 or some one who is sick1 it is the same as saving1 ,i love you4 ,can you not get a good book and show the sick ones some pictures1 or read to them8 ,you can read about ,jesus1 who had pity on all the sick and healed them4 ,jesus was very kind1 and was glad to take away the aches and pains when the people came to him4 ,he had great power to heal all kinds of sickness1 and in several places in the ,bible we read that he healed all the sick that came to him4 ,illustration3 ,,taking ,,flowers ,,to ,a ,,sick ,,friend ,he can heal us now if we trust him and ask for his healing power4 ,jesus can do all things4 ,he can do many things for us if we live true to him1 and ask him for the things that we need as we would ask mama for a piece of bread or cake4 ,jesus never fails to supply our needs if we are his true children and live for him4 ,let us have faith in ,god4 ,do a ,kindness ,do a kindness1 do it well2 ,angels will the story tell4 ,do a kindness1 tell it not2 ,angels' hands will mark the spot4 ,do a kindness1 though 'tis small2 ,angel voices sing it all4 ,do a kindness1 never mind6 ,what you lose the angels find4 ,do a kindness1 do it now2 ,angels know it all1 somehow4 ,do a kindness any time2 ,angels weave it into rhyme4 ,do a kindness1 it will pay2 ,angels will rejoice that day4 ,kindly deeds and thoughts and words ,bless the world like songs of birds4 ,illustration3 ,,flowers ,,for ,,mother ,the ,blind ,girl ,blind persons can not see anything4 ,they can not tell what any person looks like4 ,they can not see the sun1 moon1 trees1 birds1 flowers1 or any of the pretty things that we see4 ,they can not read as we do1 but they read by feeling with the ends of their fingers4 ,there are books with raised letters or dots on the pages for the blind1 and by feeling the shape of them they can read4 ,see the poor blind girl reading the book4 ,poor girl6 she can hear the birds sing1 and can smell the pretty flowers1 but she can not see how lovely they are4 ,illustration3 ,,blind ,,girl ,,reading ,when ,jesus was here on earth1 he healed the blind who came to him4 ,he is still just as able to heal the blind eyes so people can see as he was while here on earth4 ,but it takes faith in ,god1 who is all-powerful4 ,the ,little ,cripple ,i am sitting by my window ,in my lonely little room2 ,every little boy seems happy1 ,while my life is filled with gloom4 ,yonder see the children running1 ,hear them laugh in childish play2 ,like the butterflies and birdies1 ,playing all the live-long day4 ,once ,i ran as other children2 ,now ,i'm but a cripple-boy4 ,as ,i watch them through my window1 ,how their games they do enjoy6 ,how ,i'd love to hear their footsteps ,coming to my open door6 ,it would make me feel as cheerful ,as in happy days of yore4 ,yet ,i'm thankful for dear mother1 ,who so gently smooths my brow1 ,tells me pleasant little stories ,of her childhood days1 and how ,she once wandered in the meadow1 ,with the cattle and the sheep1 ,picking buttercups and daisies ,till the stars began to peep4 ,illustration ,then she tells me of the ,savior1 ,how upon this earth he trod1 ,how he came to us from heaven-- ,jesus ,christ1 the ,son of ,god4 ,now his home is up in glory ,with the happy angel band2 ,but he comes and blesses children ,and protects them by his hand4 ,then she kneels down by my bedside1 ,as the twilight shadows fall1 ,and we ask the ,lord to kindly ,guide and keep us one and all2 ,then he makes us very happy1 ,gives us blessings rich and true1 ,and ,i know with all the children1 ,jesus loves the cripples too4 ,country ,children ,children love to play on the bridge over the creek1 or sit down in the tall grass on the banks and pick wild flowers4 ,sometimes the dog swims in the water after a stick and brings it ashore4 ,dogs can swim in the water2 but if the children should get into deep water1 they could not get out1 and would drown if some one did not come to help them out4 ,there are many1 many children living in the cities who do not have the chance to play in the green grass or pick wild flowers like the children who live in the country4 ,how much they would enjoy doing so6 ,illustration3 ,,in ,,the ,,country ,god made the water and land1 the grass and flowers1 and intended that the children and all people should enjoy them4 ,jesus once said1 ,consider the lilies1 how they grow2 they toil not1 they spin not2 444 if then ,god so clothe the grass which is today in the field1 444 how much more will he clothe you1 ,o ye of little faith8 ,god takes care of the flowers1 the grass1 and the trees1 and he can care for us4 ,illustration3 ,,fun ,,on ,,the ,,farm ,the ,country ,boy ,i love to see the country boy1 ,with body large and strong4 ,he sings while he is doing chores1 ,and whistles all day long4 ,he drives the cows down to the lane1 ,and feeds the chickens1 too4 ,he carries wood for mama dear1 ,who has so much to do4 ,he goes to school and studies hard ,his lessons day by day2 ,he's always ready at recess1 ,to romp and jump and play4 ,god bless the boys6 the country boys6 ,they soon will be our men4 ,we know not then what they may do ,with deed or thought or pen4 ,but other boys as well as he1 ,can study1 learn1 and do1 ,can live a grand and noble life1 ,to right and ,god be true4 ,illustration3 ,,here',s ,a ,,place ,,sister ,,where ,,we ,,can ,,hide ,,our ,,beans ,god ,sees ,all ,things ,illustration ,one time a little boy was sent by his papa to plant some beans4 ,he worked a while1 then he sat down to play4 ,while he was playing1 he spilled part of his beans4 ,at once he began to pick them up4 ,there were so many beans that he became tired4 ,then he thought he could cover them up with dirt4 ,he thought no one would ever know he had spilled them4 ,at last he got the rest of the beans planted and went home4 ,he often thought of the beans he had spilled4 ,but he did not tell his papa4 ,some time after this his papa went to the patch4 ,he wanted to see how the beans were growing4 ,he found that all of them had come up--even those that the boy had spilled and had not picked up4 ,the boy did not need to tell his papa then what he had done4 ,for his papa knew it all4 ,so it is with some bad things you may have done4 ,you may think that no one will ever know of them4 ,but the secret will come out some time4 ,even if no person should ever find it out1 ,god sees all you do4 ,you can not hide anything from him4 ,illustration ,be ,kind to the ,aged ,one fine spring day six children went to the woods to gather wild flowers4 ,oh1 how they enjoyed the warm sunshine while they filled their little baskets with violets1 buttercups1 and spring beauties6 ,and the air was filled with the sweet perfume4 ,illustration3 ,,kind ,,to ,,the ,,aged ,the flowers were so pretty and there were so many that the children could hardly stop when the baskets were filled4 ,soon they started for home4 ,let's give some flowers to the old people1 said one4 ,yes1 let's do1 said the rest1 and off they went1 and many were the smiles from the old people that day4 ,let us be kind to the aged4 ,when we meet any one who is old1 let us speak to them kindly and give them a smile4 ,illustration3 ,,reading ,,to ,,old ,,people ,the old people did much for us when we were too small to care for ourselves4 ,let us not forget their kindness4 ,illustration ,little thoughts of kindness1 ,little deeds of love1 ,lead you from the wrong way ,to the heaven above4 ,god's ,garden ,my heart is ,god's little garden1 ,and the fruits that grow each day ,are the things that he sees me doing1 ,and the words that he hears me say4 ,the flowers in ,god's little garden ,are 'joy' and 'truth' and 'love'2 ,and the seed by the ,master planted ,is raised in the garden above4 ,there's a spring in ,god's little garden1 ,whose waters1 so sweet and clear1 ,flow out into other gardens ,which ,god plants very near4 ,i must tend to ,god's little garden1 ,lest the weeds and the sharp thorns grow2 ,if the flowers should droop and wither1 ,his heart would be sad1 ,i know4 ,a ,baby for a ,nickel ,a man told a little girl that he would sell his baby for a nickel4 ,she liked babies well and thought that was very cheap4 ,she ran home quickly to get the money4 ,her mama was very busy4 ,she gave her the nickel and did not stop to listen to what the little girl wanted4 ,the little girl ran back to the man to get the baby4 ,of course1 the man would not give up his baby4 ,he did not mean what he had said4 ,this made the little girl cry very hard4 ,her mama always told the truth4 ,she thought others meant what they said1 just like her mama4 ,it was wrong for the man not to tell the truth4 ,we often make others feel very bad when we say things that we do not mean4 ,we ,all ,must ,die ,some people are very wicked4 ,this means that they do many bad things and do not love ,god4 ,some men swear and lie and steal and also do other sinful things4 ,illustration3 ,,marilyn',s ,,teacher ,,tells ,,her ,,of ,,the ,,heavenly ,,home ,to tell a lie is to say things that are not true1 and to steal is to take something that belongs to some one else4 ,now1 it is very wrong to swear1 lie1 or steal4 ,god does not want us to do any such things4 ,all who do wicked things will some day be punished4 ,illustration ,some day we shall die1 for all of us must die4 ,if a man should be going some place through the deep snow and should get lost and the cold should freeze him1 it would kill him4 ,he would not live any longer1 but would be dead4 ,if we love ,god and live for him1 he will give us a home in heaven after we die2 but if we are wicked1 we shall be lost and punished for our wicked ways after we die4 ,we should think about our life here and see that we live to please ,god4 ,if we do not1 when we come to die we may be like the man in the boat4 ,at one time he could have been saved--while he was floating on the smooth waters4 ,but he has let it go too far1 and can only look forward to his doom4 ,let us love ,god and live for him on earth1 so we can live with him in heaven after we die4 ,when ,christ was here on earth he said3 ,i go to prepare a place for you1 444 that where ,i am1 there ye may be also4 ,the ,path of ,god ,the path of ,god ,that ,jesus trod ,is just the path for me2 ,i'll walk each day ,the narrow way1 ,where all is victory4 ,oh1 let us fight ,for truth and right1 ,and ,satan e'er defeat2 ,god giveth grace ,in every place ,and victory complete4 ,our life we give1 ,and e'er we'll live ,for ,christ1 and tell his love ,to fallen man
