reactions are a result of logical thought processes1 but the fact is that suggestion influences our thinking a great deal more than logic4 ,consciously or unconsciously1 our feelings about almost everything are largely molded by ready-made opinions and attitudes fostered by our mass methods of communication4 ,we cannot buy a bar of soap or a filtered cigarette without paying tribute to the impact of suggestion4 ,right or wrong1 most of us place more confidence in what they say than we do in our own powers of reason4 ,this is the basic reason why psychiatrists are in short supply4 ,we distrust our own mental processes and want an expert to tell us what to think and feel4 ,despite this tendency to adopt our attitudes from others1 man has always been dimly aware that he can influence his own destiny by directing his thoughts and actions into constructive channels4 ,he has always1 to some extent1 known that his mind exerts a powerful influence on his body1 and that thoughts can have harmful or helpful effects on his emotional and physical health4 ,the ancient ,egyptian sleep temples and the attempts by early physicians to drive evil spirits out of the body were both attempts to influence the body through the mind4 ,the unprecedented sale of ,the ,power of ,positive ,thinking by ,norman ,vincent ,peale and other inspirational literature proves that millions of modern people recognize the efficacy of constructive thoughts4 ,what most of them do not recognize is that they are capable of implanting these beneficial thoughts in their own minds without reference to any outside agencies4 ,this can be done through self-hypnosis4 ,in modern society we have many cults1 religions and methodologies which have mental discipline as their goal4 ,the best example of a methodology is psychosomatic medicine which deals with the interrelationship of the mind and body in the production of mental or physical illness4 ,the rapid growth of hypnosis in the last few years is another example1 and it is gratifying to see that the emphasis in this field is now shifting from hetero-hypnosis to self-hypnosis4 ,self-hypnosis is a highly suggestible state wherein the individual can direct suggestions to himself4 ,it is a powerful tool in any therapeutic process1 and highly motivated subjects can parallel the success of hetero-hypnosis through their own efforts4 ,self-hypnosis can be used as a palliative agent and can even afford lasting results in many areas of the organism4 ,self-hypnosis can alleviate distressing symptoms1 substitute strong responses for weak responses1 help overcome bad habits1 create good habits and help one's power of concentration4 ,the total personality is eventually changed to the point where it can function adequately in an increasingly difficult environment4 ,in learning self-hypnosis1 the subject does not relinquish control of himself as is commonly believed4 ,actually1 more control is gained4 ,self-sufficiency and self-confidence are inevitable results4 ,it is well to remember1 however1 that even good things may be overdone1 and good judgment is necessary for favorable results4 ,neither hypnosis nor self-hypnosis should ever be used indiscriminately4 ,the effectiveness of self-hypnosis depends upon many factors4 ,strong motivation1 intelligent application of suggestions and diligence are prerequisites4 ,we are not suggesting that self-hypnosis can take the place of all forms of psychotherapy4 ,we do recommend it as an adjunct to therapy when indicated4 ,used judiciously1 it can contribute a great deal to the individual's physical and emotional well-being and happiness4 ,as a professional hypnotist for many years1 ,i have seen astounding and apparently miraculous results by individuals using self-hypnosis4 ,many of these cases seem unbelievable to those not familiar with hypnotic phenomena4 ,it should be remembered1 though1 that many individuals seek hypnosis only when all other forms of therapy have failed4 ,this is so common that hypnosis has come to be known as a port of last call4 ,yet1 despite the seeming hopelessness of such cases1 medical literature lists thousands of remarkable recoveries4 ,there is nothing hit or miss about hypnosis4 ,used intelligently1 the results are the same for all those who are properly motivated4 ,nor are the results singular to modern hypnotists alone4 ,in reviewing the literature going back more than #ajj years1 the same gratifying results were obtained4 ,the reader would do well to scan some out-of-print books on hypnosis at the library to understand the point further4 ,this book is written in terms that are comprehensible to the layman4 ,the step-by-step instructions should afford the reader a means of acquiring self-hypnosis4 ,the necessary material is here4 ,the reader need only follow the instructions as they are given4 ,the author wishes to thank ,robert ,s4 ,starrett1 member of the ,american ,medical ,writers' ,association1 for his valuable help in the editorial preparation of this book4 ,it is the author's hope that you will1 through the selective use of self-hypnosis1 arrive at a more rewarding1 well-adjusted and fuller life4 ,,melvin ,,powers #abjae ,sherman ,road ,no4 ,hollywood1 ,california #iafje ,chapter #a ,what ,you ,should ,know ,about ,self-,hypnosis ,hypnosis has been defined as a state of heightened suggestibility in which the subject is able to uncritically accept ideas for self-improvement and act on them appropriately4 ,when a hypnotist hypnotizes his subject1 it is known as hetero-hypnosis4 ,when an individual puts himself into a state of hypnosis1 it is known as self-hypnosis4 ,in both cases1 the subject has achieved a heightened state of suggestibility4 ,even in hetero-hypnosis1 the subject really controls the response to suggestions4 ,actually1 all hypnosis is really a matter of self-hypnosis4 ,the subject enters into the hypnotic state when he is completely ready to do so4 ,this may require from one to many attempts before it is achieved4 ,even if the subject insists that he wants to be hypnotized immediately1 he may be resisting hypnosis unconsciously4 ,in self-hypnosis the same thing usually takes place4 ,the subject is anxious to achieve self-hypnosis1 but somehow the state eludes him4 ,what's wrong8 ,it may be that he is unconsciously resisting it1 hasn't conditioned himself sufficiently1 or has achieved the hypnotic state and doesn't know he is in the state4 ,this last statement may be surprising1 but we will examine it in detail a little later on4 ,most experts agree that about #ij percent of the population can be hypnotized4 ,my own feeling is that probably #ii percent can be hypnotized4 ,who among us is not influenced by suggestion8 ,aren't we all1 as we have seen1 influenced by the suggestions of advertising8 ,don't we all have a tendency to believe what we read in the paper1 hear on the radio or see on television8 ,aren't we all convinced that a name-brand article is better than one that is not so well-known8 ,suggestion plays a tremendously important role in our daily lives4 ,it begins from naming the baby with an appropriate name to securing a suitable place for interment4 ,i would like to call the reader's attention to a fascinating book dealing with the unconscious reasons why we do many of the things that we do4 ,you will be intrigued with every page of the book4 ,it is called ,the ,hidden ,persuaders by ,vance ,packard4 ,my contention is that we are all suggestible and1 therefore1 being hypnotized or hypnotizing ourselves is just a matter of increasing the suggestibility that we already possess4 ,doesn't the hypnotist begin by suggesting relaxation8 ,doesn't he usually begin by requesting the subject to fix his attention on a particular object8 ,next1 he suggests to the subject that his eyes are becoming heavy and tired4 ,as soon as the subject closes his eyes1 he suggests that he will be in a deep hypnotic state4 ,i am sure that you are familiar with this procedure4 ,with each step1 the hypnotist is guiding the subject along directed lines to get him to accept further suggestions without question or doubt4 ,when the subject achieves the ultimate state in this procedure1 he has been hypnotized4 ,he then accepts suggestions without equivocation4 ,let us continue with this same thought4 ,suppose ,i say to you1 ,i'm going to stick you with this pin4 ,it won't hurt4 ,would you let me stick you with the pin8 ,obviously not4 ,let us suppose that you have been hypnotized and ,i repeat the same suggestion4 ,what happens then8 ,you readily accept the suggestion as being factual4 ,should ,i proceed to stick you with the pin1 you do not even flinch4 ,in fact1 you do not even feel the pain4 ,does this sound incredible8 ,isn't this exactly the same procedure that the dentist uses with his patient when he has hypnotized him for the purpose of painless dentistry8 ,achieving hypnosis1 therefore1 is a matter of directing this suggestibility that we all possess into the channels that will finally produce the hypnotic state4 ,it can be much more complicated than this explanation in many cases1 but let us use this as a working premise4 ,everyone can be hypnotized4 ,the time required for achieving hypnosis will vary from subject to subject4 ,we will discuss some of the reasons for this in a subsequent chapter1 but for our discussion at this time we need to understand this point4 ,i have encountered numerous individuals who were extremely disappointed because they did not respond to hypnosis immediately or after several attempts4 ,they wanted to know what was wrong4 ,an explanation that nothing was wrong somehow did not satisfy these individuals4 ,after all1 they argued1 didn't ,i go to a hypnotist especially to be hypnotized8 ,some insinuated that perhaps the hypnotist wasn't too good4 ,let me explain that most subjects need to be conditioned for hypnosis1 and this conditioning is helped when the subject practices certain conditioning exercises that ,i shall discuss in detail in chapter six1 titled ,how ,to ,attain ,self-,hypnosis4 ,in my teaching1 ,i have found that about one out of ten subjects responds to the first attempt at hypnosis4 ,one cannot make a definite statement as to the length of time necessary to learn self-hypnosis1 but it is my experience that this usually takes about one month4 ,i have had subjects learn self-hypnosis in about #cj minutes1 but ,i must also relate that ,i have worked with subjects for one year before they achieved it4 ,for the most part1 the laws of learning apply to self-hypnosis as with anything else that one would want to learn4 ,it can be a relatively simple procedure1 or it can be very perplexing4 ,the answer lies not so much with the hypnotist as with the subject4 ,one question that arises is3 ,if ,i'm under hypnosis1 how can ,i give myself suggestions8 ,during the hypnotic state1 it must be remembered1 the subject is always aware of what is going on4 ,he hears what is said1 follows directions and terminates the state when told to do so4 ,in the self-hypnotic state1 the subject is in full control4 ,therefore1 he can think1 reason1 act1 criticize1 suggest or do whatever he desires4 ,he can audibly give himself suggestions1 or he can mentally give himself suggestions4 ,in either case1 he does not rouse from the hypnotic state until he gives himself specific suggestions to do so4 ,many feel if they audibly give themselves suggestions1 they will awaken4 ,in hypno-analysis1 the subject answers questions during the hypnotic state4 ,having the subject talk does not terminate the state4 ,you can keep the talkative subject under hypnosis as long as you want4 ,furthermore1 the subject can be sitting erect with his eyes open and still be under hypnosis4 ,carrying this further1 the subject may not even be aware that he is under hypnosis4 ,he can be given a cue not to remember when the therapist makes a certain motion or says a certain word that he will go back into the hypnotic state but still keep his eyes open4 ,only an experienced hypnotist could detect the change4 ,another frequent question is3 ,how do ,i arouse myself from the self-hypnotic state8 ,you merely say to yourself that upon counting to five you will open your eyes and wake up feeling fine4 ,many times the subject falls asleep while giving himself posthypnotic suggestions4 ,this is not undesirable since the suggestions will spill over into the subconscious mind as he goes from consciousness to unconsciousness4 ,a popular opinion about hypnosis is that the subject surrenders his will to the hypnotist in the process of being hypnotized4 ,furthermore1 many believe that once the subject is hypnotized1 the hypnotist has complete control of the subject and the subject is powerless to resist suggestion4 ,both beliefs are erroneous4 ,i believe the first misconception comes from seeing techniques where the hypnotist requests the subject to look into his eyes4 ,the hypnotist suggests to the subject that as he continues to look into his eyes he will fall into a deep hypnotic state4 ,this1 then1 becomes a matter of who can outstare whom4 ,the subject usually begins to blink his eyes and the hypnotist follows this up with rapid suggestions that the subject's eyes are becoming watery and heavy and that the subject will fall into a deep hypnotic sleep just as soon as he 7the subject7 closes his eyes4 ,this procedure gives the impression to the observer that the subject is willed to go under hypnosis4 ,it appears that once the hypnotist concentrates or wills sufficiently1 the subject succumbs4 ,actually1 the hypnotist in this technique is not looking into the eyes of the subject4 ,he fixes his attention on the bridge of the nose of the subject4 ,the concept that the subject is a helpless automaton stems from the weird movies where the mad scientist has hypnotized subjects into behaving like zombies4 ,naturally1 there is usually a beautiful girl in the movie and she1 too1 has been hypnotized4 ,even though the audience is sophisticated enough to realize that this science-fiction drama is purely entertainment1 the theme is repeated sufficiently in novels1 comics1 and television to make an indelible impression on the subconscious mind4 ,it's the technique of telling the big lie so many times that it becomes believable4 ,we are all influenced by this procedure4 ,there is an excellent book explaining this very premise4 ,it is called ,battle ,for ,the ,mind by ,william ,sargent4 ,it describes in detail the technique by which evangelists1 psychiatrists1 politicians and advertising men can change your beliefs and behavior4 ,following the reasoning that the subconscious mind can be affected1 you can see that a problem could present itself even though the subject consciously wishes to be hypnotized4 ,unconsciously1 there may be a poor interrelationship with the hypnotist which can create an unfavorable climate for hypnosis4 ,when this is the case1 the subject doesn't respond until such time that he relates well to the hypnotist4 ,even the most calculated procedures will fail until a positive transference relationship is established4 ,i am sure that you sometimes have said1 ,for some reason ,i don't like that person4 ,if pressed for an answer1 you'll usually reply1 ,i can't explain it1 but ,i just have a feeling about him4 ,actually1 your subconscious reactions are influencing your thinking and you feel a certain way4 ,the same thing takes place in business transactions4 ,you either like or dislike the proposition presented to you4 ,you may say1 ,i have a certain feeling about this deal4 ,you may not be conscious of the reasons1 but your subconscious has reacted automatically because of previous experience along similar lines4 ,in giving you some insight into the hypnotic procedure1 ,i am trying to point out certain problems in regard to acquiring self-hypnosis4 ,for the most part1 it is not a simple procedure that is accomplished immediately4 ,you can't just will it4 ,it requires working toward a specific goal and following definite procedures which eventually lead to success4 ,the hypnotist is usually endowed by the subject with an omniscience and infallibility which logically is unjustified4 ,the subject is naturally extremely disappointed if he doesn't respond immediately4 ,if he loses confidence in the hypnotist1 he may never achieve hypnosis with this particular hypnotist4 ,i have hypnotized subjects who have been to several other hypnotists without success1 and ,i have had some of my unsuccessful subjects hypnotized by other hypnotists4 ,how and why does it happen8 ,i believe that some of the reasons are so intangible that it would be impossible to explain all of them with any degree of exactitude4 ,i once saw an individual about #ab times who wanted to learn self-hypnosis and had been unsuccessful in every approach4 ,i asked him if he would volunteer as a subject for a class in techniques of hypnosis that ,i was teaching for nurses4 ,he readily volunteered and showed up at the designated time4 ,much to my amazement as well as his own1 he responded within a relatively short time as one of the nurses hypnotized him before the group4 ,she had used a standard eye closure technique1 requesting him to look at a spinning hypnodisc that ,i had previously used with him every time he was in the office4 ,her manner was extremely affable1 she had used the identical technique ,i had used unsuccessfully1 and the subject responded excellently to cap the climax4 ,he was the first subject the nurse had ever hypnotized1 since this was only her third lesson4 ,how would you account for it8 ,here was one of my students with two weeks' experience hypnotizing a subject where ,i had failed while using every procedure that ,i felt would work4 ,was it because she was a better hypnotist8 ,perhaps6 ,however1 ,i'd like to recall at this time our discussion about subconscious responses4 ,i'm inclined to feel that being hypnotized by a middle-aged female nurse created certain favorable unconscious responses which accounted for his going under hypnosis at that time4 ,it created the initial break-through which was needed4 ,i was able to hypnotize him easily at his next appointment1 and he acquired self-hypnosis readily from that time on4 ,i have tried the same approach with other subjects who did not respond favorably and have failed to attain the success that ,i did in the above case4 ,why the impasse8 ,it is one of the difficulties that we encounter in hypnosis1 and as yet it has not been resolved4 ,we know that the easiest way to achieve self-hypnosis is to be hypnotized and given a posthypnotic suggestion that you will respond to hypnosis by a key word1 phrase or gesture4 ,i have tried to point out some problems that can arise4 ,needless to say1 these problems do not always arise1 and the attainment of self-hypnosis can be a relatively simple procedure4 ,there is usually some way of reaching a subject who does not respond in a reasonable length of time4 ,now we come to the point where the subject wishes to hypnotize himself4 ,what happens in this situation8 ,it would appear that the subject would go under hypnosis immediately4 ,after all1 isn't he controlling the hypnotic session8 ,of course1 this does happen time and time again1 and the results seem miraculous4 ,i receive mail constantly from readers of several of my other books on hypnosis telling me how they were able to achieve certain goals that they never dreamed possible4 ,they write that they have achieved self-confidence and complete self-mastery and have been able to overcome problems that have plagued them for many years4 ,these problems not only include strictly psychological troubles but many psychosomatic symptoms as well4 ,many have remarked at the ease in which they were able to achieve self-hypnosis and the results they wanted4 ,for them it was as simple as following a do-it-yourself book4 ,others write about the difficulty they encounter and ask what to do about it4 ,it is my hope that this book will shed some light for those who have experienced difficulty in learning self-hypnosis4 ,we shall discuss many phases of hypnosis with the emphasis on self-hypnosis4 ,we'll discuss its many ramifications and try not to leave out anything helpful in our discussion4 ,if you follow the instructions and exercises that ,i give you assiduously1 you should be able to achieve a depth of self-hypnosis suitable for solving many of your personal problems4 ,chapter #b ,what ,about the ,dangers of ,hypnosis8 ,one of the objections that you hear to hypnosis is that it can be dangerous in the hands of those not trained in the psychodynamics of human behavior4 ,inasmuch as psychiatrists and clinical psychologists are the only ones who are thoroughly trained in the analysis of human behavior1 this objection1 if valid1 could limit hypnosis to a comparative handful of therapists4 ,fortunately1 it is not valid4 ,this was proved several years ago when the ,bridey ,murphy craze gripped the country4 ,despite the fact that thousands of amateur hypnotists were practicing hypnosis1 little or no harm resulted4 ,i have personally instructed several thousand medical and non-medical individuals and have yet to hear of a single case where a crisis was precipitated or anything of a dangerous or detrimental nature occurred as a result of hypnosis4 ,i have also taught several thousand persons self-hypnosis and can report the same findings4 ,many patients who seek treatment from competent psychiatrists1 psychoanalysts and psychologists do not always obtain satisfactory results4 ,this doesn't mean that everyone should stop seeking help from these specialists4 ,even a specialist doesn't have a perfect record of successful therapy4 ,what then is the objection to hypnosis8 ,the theory that if you get rid of one symptom another symptom will take its place really holds no truth and is usually advanced by those who have had little or no experience in the hypnosis field4 ,however1 a difference of opinion does exist even with those practicing hypnosis in this area4 ,some hypnotists trade down symptoms by replacing a serious symptom with a minor one1 while others just remove the symptom4 ,the latter is what a doctor does when he recommends aspirin for arthritis4 ,he knows the aspirin will not cure the arthritis1 but he wants to alleviate the symptom4 ,to say that another symptom will replace the pain is unscientific--and untrue4 ,the same is true of hypnosis4 ,lewis ,r4 ,wolberg1 ,m4,d41 clinical professor of psychiatry1 ,new ,york ,medical ,college1 recently canvassed #cj experts in the field of hypnosis and found a few who felt symptom removal was irrational1 temporary--or outright dangerous4 ,the large majority1 however1 employed symptom removal where indicated1 and minimized or ridiculed any possible bad effects4 ,a further objection to hypnosis is that the results are temporary as well as symptomatic4 ,it is well to remember that most medical therapy is specifically directed to symptom removal4 ,how permanent is most medical treatment8 ,once you couple hetero-hypnosis with self-hypnosis1 you afford the patient the opportunity of utilizing suggestions for his own benefit any time they are needed4 ,this1 of course1 can make symptom relief permanent4 ,as an example1 ,i would see no harm in teaching a patient self-hypnosis for symptomatic relief from a problem of insomnia4 ,it would certainly be better than physically depressing the higher brain centers with sleeping pills to produce unconsciousness every night4 ,i needn't tell you that millions of dollars are spent every year on sleeping pills and patients become dependent upon them1 needing more and more pills in order to produce sleep4 ,many accidental suicides stem from an overdose of sleeping pills4 ,yet1 despite the inherent dangers of sleeping pills which are glaringly apparent1 they are prescribed by the millions1 to say nothing of those that reach the market through illegal channels4 ,furthermore1 how much effort is really made to get the patient off the sleeping pills8 ,there are also more voluntary suicides by sleeping pills than by any other method4 ,perhaps if these drugs weren't so readily available1 many of these unfortunate individuals would be with us today4 ,what about the often-quoted statement that you might do some damage8 ,let's explore this area4 ,i assume that the reader is somewhat familiar with the work of ,emile ,cou or at least has heard of his famous autosuggestion formula of ,day by day1 in every way1 ,i'm getting better and better4 ,during our time1 thousands upon thousands of seemingly helpless and hopeless cases have been cured by repeating this affirmation over and over again1 day after day1 as the individual falls asleep4 ,i think we should make it clear that whether we call it autosuggestion1 positive thinking1 meditation1 yoga1 affirmations or self-hypnosis1 we are1 in reality1 talking about the same thing4 ,all require certain basic prerequisites before they will work effectively for the individual4 ,we'll discuss these prerequisites in the next chapter4 ,what should be remembered is that the suggestions are being filtered into the subconscious mind which does not question1 doubt1 analyze or dispute the efficacy of these beneficial thoughts4 ,you can be sure that the constant repetition will have its effect4 ,hasn't the mind1 in the past1 accepted the individual's diagnosis when he said1 ,i'm sick1 ,i have an inferiority complex1 ,i can't stop smoking1 ,i can't lose weight1 ,i can't concentrate1 ,i can remember a person's face1 but ,i can't remember names1 ,i have a difficult time falling asleep1 ,i just can't seem to relax4 ,isn't such an individual1 in effect1 using self-hypnosis8 ,and hasn't the person convinced himself of the validity of his present state8 ,this is truly dangerous4 ,it is negative hypnosis4 ,the question that ,i raise is3 ,why shouldn't the subconscious mind be even more convinced and respond strongly to suggestions which are in conformity with the natural desire to be of sound body and mind8 ,i have never been able to find a logical answer4 ,i think this is what happens many times4 ,a person seeks help with a problem which1 in reality1 has nothing to do with hypnosis4 ,his cure is not contingent on being hypnotized or on suggestions he or the hypnotist feel are indicated4 ,you will read in nearly every book and article dealing with hypnosis that hypnotism is not a cure-all4 ,no one has suggested or implied that it should be used exclusively for all emotional problems4 ,you may read a newspaper article warning about the dangers of hypnosis4 ,it may tell of a person who rid himself of one symptom and developed another in its place4 ,you usually get a grossly distorted picture of what happened1 with many aspects of the case not included4 ,it's a matter of taking what you want to prove out of context4 ,propagandists use this technique all the time to get across their message4 ,it's the old story of telling a half truth4 ,honest criticism and a sincere difference of opinion are always welcome4 ,but criticism must be well-founded from a scientific point of view and not stem from an emotional reaction4 ,you have probably heard the remark1 ,i won't let anyone hypnotize me4 ,what are they really saying1 and what does hypnosis represent to such an individual8 ,to them1 hypnosis represents some sort of magic spell which invokes a state of complete helplessness and dependency upon the hypnotist4 ,we previously discussed how this erroneous conception can take place because of the manner in which hypnosis is usually interwoven with bizarre fictional stories4 ,for many1 the hypnotic state represents a period in which the conscious guard is dropped4 ,they feel they may compulsively reveal the darker side of their nature1 confess their hostility or relate information they would never voluntarily divulge to anyone4 ,this is the real danger they see in hypnosis4 ,to protect themselves from it1 they attack it4 ,it is much like the fanatic vice crusader who militantly attacks sin in order to alleviate his own feelings of guilt stemming from the fact that vice actually attracts him4 ,fear of hypnosis takes different forms1 but basically it is the fear of revealing one's true feelings4 ,an employee1 for instance1 at a gathering which included the employer he dislikes1 would never volunteer as a subject for hypnosis if the occasion arose4 ,he would be afraid he would do or say something which might endanger his position4 ,hypnosis for him would be dangerous because he would be afraid to take the chance4 ,the truth is1 however1 that this individual would be taking no chance4 ,the hypnotic state is not a confessional period4 ,the subject is aware at all times of what he is saying4 ,if the subject does not wish to pursue a line of questioning1 he tells the hypnotist4 ,if the hypnotist persisted further along this line1 the subject would shake off the hypnotic state4 ,another misconception about hypnosis is the widely held belief that the subject is unconscious4 ,this represents a threat to the security of the individual4 ,actually1 the hypnotic state is a period of extreme awareness in which the subject is hyperacute4 ,furthermore1 the subject is not asleep1 nor is he in a trance state in the correct meaning of that term4 ,he is in an altered state of awareness with his faculties and reasoning ability intact4 ,inducing hypnosis merely creates a mood or state in which the powers of suggestibility are heightened4 ,when the general public and the medical profession become familiar with the true nature of hypnosis1 we shall have a greater acceptance and utilization of this power4 ,it is a slow process but one which will finally evolve4 ,in the final analysis1 ,i believe the only danger that exists is in the mind of the individual who fears hypnosis because of whatever subjective qualms he has about his own emotional involvement in the hypnotic process4 ,of course1 all persons using hypnosis for the alleviation of pain should consult their family physician4 ,pain is nature's way of indicating that something is wrong with the organism4 ,it would be foolish to suggest that a pain in the stomach will disappear when this may be a sign of a needed appendix operation4 ,the same may be said of constant migraine headaches4 ,it must be determined that the headache is not a symptom of a brain tumor or some other pathological condition4 ,it may be of interest to know that hypnosis is presently being used to relieve pain in terminal cancer patients4 ,there is an excellent article on this subject1 and ,i recommend it to doctors reading this book4 ,it is called ,the ,use of ,hypnosis in the ,case of the ,cancer ,patient which appeared in the ,january #aied issue of ,cancer4#a #a ,at the same time1 ,i would highly recommend the booklet1 ,helping the ,dying ,patient and ,his ,family1 published by the ,national ,association of ,social ,workers1 #b ,park ,avenue1 ,new ,york #af1 ,new ,york4 ,price3 #ge cents4 ,there are at present several thousand dentists throughout the country using hypnosis4 ,they have formed their own society and publish a quarterly journal1 ,the ,journal of the ,american ,society of ,psychosomatic ,dentistry4 ,one of the best books in this field is called ,dental ,hypnosis ,handbook by ,jacob ,stolzenberg1 ,d4,d4,s4 ,an excellent article is ,danger6 ,hypnotherapist at ,work by ,m4 ,abramson4#b ,the author reviews briefly the pros and cons regarding the medical use of hypnosis4 ,he concludes3 ,it is the author's opinion1 based on an extensive personal experience of over #ae years1 that the use of hypnotherapy by a physician or dentist who has been properly trained and who uses this technique strictly within his field of competence carries with it no more 7and probably less7 'danger' than the use of many other techniques of treatment used in medicine today4 #b ,bull4 ,hennepin ,co4 ,med4 ,soc41 #aifj1 #ca3aja-ajf ,chapter #c ,is ,hypnosis the ,answer8 ,dr4 ,george ,estabrooks1 professor of psychology at ,colgate ,university and author of the book1 ,hypnotism1 made the following two statements in a paper called ,the ,future of ,hypnosis given as part of a program on ,the ,nature of ,hypnosis at the annual meeting of the ,american ,psychological ,association in #aiei3 ,it would be well to sound a word of caution against certain attitudes which have become prevalent and which can be well illustrated in the field of medicine4 ,in this respect1 direct suggestion is under the ban4 ,for example1 a dictum1 ',never remove the symptom unless the cause is understood1' is much emphasized4 ,its validity is greatly open to question1 since much of medical practice is direct symptom removal1 as only a little thought makes apparent4 ,another dictum generally followed is that the unconscious background of symptom-complexes must necessarily be made conscious to effect a cure4 ,reasonable and thoughtful consideration of the extensive role of the unconscious in daily living and functioning renders this dictum much less creditable4 ,i should like to discuss both of these statements in some detail as they invariably arise in the mind of the individual seeking help through hypnosis4 ,the first thought that comes to mind is that all the religious healings cited in the ,bible involve direct symptom removal4 ,the cures that are effected by religious devotees traveling to sacred shrines are also in the realm of direct symptom removal4 ,i have yet to hear a criticism of this type of treatment directed at religious leaders or condemnation of the religious shrines4 ,these cures are accepted as evidence of the power of faith or attributed to the super-natural4 ,in these cases1 nothing is ever done to make the person cured understand the nature of the unconscious mechanisms which contributed to his problem4 ,religious healing cannot be dismissed by merely saying1 ,it isn't scientific4 ,a methodology is only scientific when it works4 ,it is of no value if it doesn't help the individual seeking help4 ,we must face the fact that not all people can be helped by the same psychological treatment4 ,we can readily see this in the following extreme example3 ,an aborigine suffering from a psychological problem certainly wouldn't be a candidate for psychoanalysis as we know it4 ,he could1 no doubt1 be helped much more readily by a witch doctor4 ,it also stands to reason that the sophisticated ,westerner would not be influenced by the incantations of a tribal medicine man4 ,going further1 we find there are many schools of psychotherapy and many approaches to solving man's emotional problems4 ,the cure rate for all of them1 however1 is approximately the same4 ,i think we must accept the fact that there is no one sound1 logical1 scientific approach4 ,i believe that so long as the end result is achieved1 the methodology was scientific for that individual's needs4 ,the goal of all therapies is to help the patient free himself from whatever emotional problems beset him4 ,this approach1 to some readers1 may seem an oversimplification of a very complex problem1 but ,i think it's time that we had a simple1 workable formula devoid of technical jargon4 ,too often1 complex technical terms and theories have been glibly used to explain away failures4 ,i believe we need more and more emphasis on measures to make the patient feel better rather than spending most of the time trying to find out why he doesn't feel well4 ,this1 of course1 is symptom removal again4 ,i should like to point out an interesting fact pertaining to ,biblical healers4 ,so long as the fame of the healer preceded his arrival in any country1 he was able to heal the sick4 ,however1 where his fame as a healer was either unknown or discredited1 he found no faith and subsequently no cure4 ,the earliest reference to hypnosis is in the ,bible1 ,genesis ii1 #ba4 ,and the ,lord ,god caused a deep sleep to fall upon ,adam1 and he slept 444 ,dr4 ,william ,malamud1 #hfth president of the ,american ,psychiatric ,association1 in an address delivered at the annual meeting in #aifj1 stated the following in a paper called ,psychiatric ,research3 ,setting and ,motivation3 ,during the last few years we have witnessed a growing trend of overemphasizing the value of 'exact' methodology and uniformity of standards4 ,this trend1 which could be characterized as a 'cult of objectivity1' has already had an important influence on psychiatric research4 ,it is true that in its emphasis on critical judgment and valid criteria1 it has helped to curb unrestrained flights of imagination and sloppy methodology4 ,but the overglorification of objectivity and the insistence on rigidly single standards of acceptable methods have resulted in a concentration on certain phases of the science of human behavior at the expense of other very important ones4 ,i believe that most individuals have a fairly good understanding of how they came to have the problem that they have4 ,i have yet to encounter the person who protests he has no idea why he doesn't function as he would like to in a certain area4 ,from a practical standpoint1 not many have the time nor money required to delve into the unconscious background of the problem4 ,the high cost of treatment is a very real objection and cannot be discounted lightly4 ,people suffering from emotional problems usually suffer financial reverses as well4 ,who is to help these people8 ,there are very few places in the country where they can receive competent psychiatric help at a reasonable fee4 ,is there this type of help in your own community8 ,it is only when the individual is destitute that the state provides whatever help it can4 ,however1 at this point it's a long hard struggle back to good emotional health4 ,the ,national ,association for ,mental ,health and its affiliates issue about #aj million copies of #bjj different pamphlets on various aspects of mental health4 ,to assess the value of these pamphlets1 #dg mental hygiene experts held a conference at ,cornell ,university4 ,a report on this outstanding conference has been published4 ,it is called ,mental ,health ,education3 ,a ,critique4 ,a feature by ,ernest ,havemann in the ,august #h1 #aifj issue of ,life contains a very worthwhile article on this conference called ,who's ,normal8 ,nobody1 ,but ,we ,all ,keep ,on ,trying4 ,in ,dissent ,from ',mental ,health' ,approach1 ,experts ,decry ,futile ,search ,for ,an ,unreal ,goal4 ,the following paragraph is taken from the ,life article3 ,what about psychiatry and psychoanalysis8 ,this is a different matter4 ,many unhappy and problem-ridden people1 though by no means all who have tried it1 have profited from psychotherapy4 ,indeed1 all the mental health pamphlets1 as a postscript to the self-help methods they advocate1 wind up by advising the reader to seek professional care if his problems are serious enough4 ,but the skeptics at ,cornell cited statistics which to them show that psychiatric treatment is as remote for the average person as a trip to the moon4 ,aside from the expense1 which most people would find prohibitive1 there simply are not enough therapists to go around4 ,the ,u4 ,s4 has around #aa1jjj psychiatrists and #aj1jjj clinical psychologists--in all1 about one for every #h1ejj citizens4 ,if everybody with emotional problems decided to see a psychiatrist1 the lines at the doctors' offices would stretch for miles4 ,i assume that most readers of this book know that state hospitals are understaffed and unable to provide proper care for the mentally ill4 ,mike ,gorman1 executive director of the ,national ,mental ,health ,committee1 has written a crusading report on this very theme called ,every ,other ,bed4 ,in this book he tells us that every other hospital bed in the ,united ,states is occupied by a mental case4 ,mental illness costs the country two and a half billion dollars a year besides the more important untold human suffering that can never be equated in dollars4 ,the book is a shocking story of how we have let this happen2 are still letting it happen2 and of how little1 for the most part1 we1 the general public as well as the medical and psychological professions1 are doing to correct this deplorable situation4 ,it is time that we re-examined the dictums that say a symptom can never be removed unless the cause is understood and the unconscious background of symptom-complexes must be made conscious and understood before a cure is effected4 ,there are many positive thinking groups functioning in the religious field4 ,many of these religious groups are in existence primarily because of the dynamic philosophy or psychology they offer for every day living4 ,couple this with a strong faith in ,god1 and you have a combination which approaches infallibility4 ,recently we have had a series of best-selling books which expound this very theme4 ,does it work8 ,of course it does when used properly4 ,you can be sure that there has been criticism of this religious psychology4 ,the criticism is that the basic causes of the problem are never dealt with and the unconscious conflict is not resolved4 ,it's the same argument over and over again4 ,what about the people helped8 ,they seem to have made tremendous strides and are leading lives as well adjusted as anyone else4 ,once imbued with this spirit or feeling of well-being1 it permeates every phase of their relationships in a constructive manner4 ,the only reason that there isn't more criticism is that this type of psychotherapy is incorporated into the religious tenets of these groups1 and criticizing another man's religion makes the detractor's entire philosophy unacceptable4 ,i am strongly in favor of these groups because ,i would prefer having a religion that keeps pointing out the positive side of life and that life can be beautiful if you put your faith in ,god and practice positive thinking4 ,it is certainly better than the cynical philosophy of its detractors or the grim religions which stress punishment4 ,think of the guilt feelings involved in the latter4 ,no one can live up to such a formidable creed4 ,of course1 if you suggest to positive thinking1 religious individuals that they are using a form of self-hypnosis1 they will emphatically deny and debate the issue4 ,since we are primarily interested in mental hygiene and not in winning a debate1 it is well to leave the matter as it stands4 ,the point to keep in mind is that so long as a person feels that this methodology is the answer to his needs and so long as no one is being hurt by his belief1 ,i feel he should cling to his conviction4 ,he should not allow it to be destroyed by those who are thinking in different semantic terms4 ,i would like to bring up another common example pertaining to the two basic concepts that we have been discussing4 ,it is the example of the many individuals who have taken public speaking courses to overcome stage fright4 ,in most cases1 the person involved hasn't had too much opportunity to be a public speaker4 ,because of this1 he suddenly feels he may not say the right thing or forget what he wants to say4 ,this anxiety can create the very situation or block that he fears4 ,what is the solution8 ,certainly not psychoanalysis to find out why he functions the way he does4 ,you could use this approach1 but ,i don't think it's the most constructive one4 ,it is like asking1 ,what am ,i doing that's wrong8 instead of ,what can ,i do that's right8 ,the most constructive approach is to take a course of instruction to get the actual practice and experience in the techniques of public speaking4 ,before proceeding further1 ,i believe it is necessary to point out that ,i am not just being critical of the convictions of other sincere and dedicated individuals engaged in the field of mental hygiene4 ,it is always good to re-evaluate our present thinking on any subject1 no matter how sincere or convinced we may be that what we are doing is correct4 ,at times1 we can become so immersed in our convictions that we cannot take criticism and respond emotionally to ideas or interpretations that do not coincide with logical thinking4 ,what1 then1 is the answer to mental health problems8 ,there is no single answer4 ,it is a very complex situation4 ,there are many promising drugs and treatments which1 if adequately developed and widely used1 could do a great deal toward promoting good mental health4 ,fundamentally1 the problem will always be that of trying to understand human behavior and helping those in distress with an efficacious formula4 ,what is that formula8 ,i believe hypnosis can contribute in part to the answer4 ,needless to say1 hypnosis is contraindicated in many emotional problems because of the very nature of the problem itself4 ,some emotional difficulties must first be worked out on a conscious level4 ,after this1 hypnosis can be instrumental in achieving the final goal4 ,dr4 ,frank ,s4 ,caprio1 a prominent psychiatrist1 in his book1 ,helping ,yourself with ,psychiatry1 states the following3 ,a whole new world of self-confidence and positive living is open to every person1 young and old1 through hypnosis1 self-hypnosis and self-suggestion or auto-hypnosis4 ,chapter #d ,how ,does ,self-,hypnosis ,work8 ,there's an old ,chinese proverb that states3 ,one picture is worth a thousand words4 ,in conveying suggestions to the subconscious1 we have found that picture images are more effective than the words that are implanted4 ,for example1 it isn't sufficient to say1 ,i will be confident4 ,the words must be augmented by a picture of yourself as the confident person you want to be4 ,if you say1 ,i can't visualize myself as a confident person because ,i have never been that way1 you can borrow those personality traits that you want for yourself4 ,imagine yourself endowed with the characteristics of some confident person that you know4 ,the qualities that you seek may even be borrowed from a famous person4 ,if this isn't possible1 make up a personality which is a composite of all the things you want to be4 ,see yourself walking1 talking and carrying on activities4 ,keep fortifying this image with the mental suggestions that are needed4 ,it won't be long before these mental impressions give rise to the confident feelings that you seek4 ,as you keep implanting these images1 they will become a natural part of your conscious personality4 ,dr4 ,s4 ,j4 ,van ,pelt1 president of the ,british ,society of ,medical ,hypnotists and editor of the ,british ,journal of ,medical ,hypnotism1 writes about this technique in his book1 ,secrets of ,hypnotism4 ,he calls it '#c-;,d' ,technique in ,medical ,hypnotherapy4 ,as you read the following paragraph1 it would be well to remember that it contains the essence of making the self-hypnosis technique work once you have achieved the hypnotic state1 per se4 ,incidentally1 the same procedure can be used in attaining the hypnotic state itself4 ,you see yourself entering the state of hypnosis in your initial attempts4 ,this1 in turn1 sets up a conditioned response and a favorable emotional reaction which is necessary4 ,the writer has found 7visualization7 of the greatest value in the re-education of the patient1 which is an essential part of hypnotherapy4 ,in this method1 after the cause of the trouble has been discovered and as a part of his re-education1 the patient is instructed while under only light hypnosis to 'form a picture' in his mind4 ,he is asked to imagine a movie screen and to see himself 'just like an actor' on this screen playing a part4 ,he is told that the picture looks 'very real'--'#c-;,d' in fact--and that he can see himself acting and looking the way he really wants to look and act4 ,various scenes are suggested such as 444 the patient will have to face in real life4 ,in each he is instructed to see himself--'as in real life'--always succeeding4 ,for instance1 the stammerer might be asked to picture himself speaking easily to people1 and feeling perfectly at ease4 ,the patient is also instructed how to form these 'success pictures' for himself1 and it is stressed that he will only be able to see himself as he wants to be--successful4 ,since the pictures give rise to the appropriate feelings1 it is not long before the patient begins to show the benefit of his private '#c-;,d' film shows4 ,after explaining this technique to students1 many have inquired1 ,is that all there is to it8 ,it seems so simple4 ,of course1 there is more to it in that the individual must follow through with the instruction4 ,this is one of the difficult aspects of this type of program4 ,let me enumerate some of the problems ,i have encountered in teaching self-hypnosis4 ,as mentioned1 one of the difficulties is that the technique seems too simple4 ,students become skeptical4 ,they feel it should be more complicated and involved in order to get results4 ,i suppose people better appreciate something that comes only after a hard struggle4 ,this procedure is devoid of this4 ,of course1 ,i am not saying that once a person begins to use this technique his problems will automatically vanish and his life will be cheery forever after4 ,we have been conditioned to think that success in anything can only come after a long1 hard struggle4 ,this is the basic theme of the ,american way of life4 ,we have been accustomed to believe that conflict and struggle are part of life and large doses of it are necessary before we achieve success in any field4 ,i can only reiterate that the information contained in this book is all you need to get results4 ,it is necessary that you follow through and not give up after you have tried the program for a short while and have obtained no appreciable results4 ,this brings us to another point4 ,many persons expect immediate results when they begin to use self-hypnosis4 ,if they don't get the results they anticipated immediately1 they want to know what's wrong8 ,my answer is usually that nothing is wrong and that they need only keep steadily applying the instructions4 ,certainly1 one doesn't become a proficient typist1 musician1 actor or sportsman because he has mastered the basic techniques4 ,it takes time to acquire proficiency4 ,let me assure you that anyone using and applying this technique can benefit from it4 ,one of the troubles in dealing with any problem is routing defeatism and hopelessness4 ,you can incorporate posthypnotic corrective measures in the suggestions that you give yourself4 ,however1 ,i believe that they must be dealt with on a conscious level as well4 ,you must believe that you can conquer your difficulties no matter how long you have had them4 ,if you are prepared to work with self-hypnosis in an unremitting manner1 you will achieve the self-help that you seek4 ,now and then1 you can anticipate a setback in your progress1 but this needn't discourage you from your overall task4 ,recount the progress already made4 ,if you have a let-down because you expected quicker and more dramatic results1 remember that this is a common feeling shared by many with emotional problems4 ,remember1 also1 how long you have had the problem4 ,no doubt1 you have tried other methods and became discouraged because you weren't making the progress you had anticipated4 ,you dropped the idea and landed back where you started4 ,make up your mind1 consciously1 that you will work with untiring sincerity and a perseverance that will not falter because your chosen goal is not achieved immediately4 ,i know of no therapy that leads straight to positive results without obstacles and intermittent failure4 ,success comes in spite of intervening failures because the ultimate direction has been clearly thought out and charted4 ,self-hypnosis will finally work because you are constantly conditioning your subconscious to react in a positive1 constructive manner4 ,the program must1 of necessity1 become automatic in nature4 ,when it does1 you will suddenly find yourself feeling the way you wanted to and doing the things that you set out to do with the aid of self-hypnosis4 ,you actually cultivate those feelings that you want4 ,hypnosis will not work with skeptics4 ,every so often such a person comes to my office seeking help4 ,he tells me that his family physician or his spouse feels he should take my course in self-hypnosis4 ,i inquire if he feels he might benefit from the course4 ,if his answer is not positive1 and if after talking to him at length about the benefits of hypnosis1 ,i still feel he is not ready for the course1 ,i suggest another mode of treatment for him4 ,the reason for this is that unless the person is optimistic and enthusiastic about self-hypnosis1 it just isn't going to work as effectively as it would otherwise4 ,the very nature of a skeptical attitude limits the constructive forces that we wish to harness4 ,occasionally1 individuals want indisputable proof that hypnosis is going to help them4 ,it is impossible to give them the proof and unqualified reassurance that they seek4 ,yet1 these same people do not require proof from their physicians4 ,no one can guarantee success4 ,however1 ,i do point out that the continued and intelligent use of self-hypnosis can be instrumental in directing the healing1 curative1 constructive forces of nature4 ,many times1 a metaphysical rather than a scientific approach is required4 ,it's a matter of trying to satisfy the patient's needs4 ,at times1 it is helpful to allow the patient to attend a class in self-hypnosis4 ,being able to communicate and identify with other individuals seeking self-hypnosis often is enough to change his attitude4 ,this is especially true when one or more of the students relates dramatic changes4 ,self-hypnosis works because we are able to condition ourselves to various stimuli4 ,we condition ourselves consciously and unconsciously to many activities4 ,when we experience anxiety1 it stems from a conditioning process which could have been conscious or unconscious4 ,in self-hypnosis1 the individual consciously works toward implementing and strengthening his own inherent strength and resources4 ,these objectives1 when attained1 result in feelings of confidence1 relaxation1 self-mastery and well-being4 ,furthermore1 hypnosis utilizes a natural mental process4 ,we all know that placebos work admirably in numerous cases4 ,the dictionary defines the word placebo as1 an inactive substance or preparation1 administered to please or gratify a patient1 also used in controlled studies to determine the efficiency of medicinal substances4 ,many controlled experiments have shown that people achieve similar results whether they take a placebo 7which they think is the real medication7 or real medication that was prescribed4 ,several years ago many such tests were carried out with antihistamines to prevent colds4 ,the results were always the same4 ,we are interested in what makes the placebo act as effectively as the true medication4 ,it stands to reason that a chain reaction is set up1 actually causing a physiological result from a psychological reaction4 ,the unsuspecting patient declares1 ,i've never felt so good in my life4 ,yet1 this would never have happened if he didn't think he was taking the marvelous new medicine4 ,a recent scientific study by one of the leading pharmaceutical houses concluded that one third of the effectiveness of any medication depends upon the faith and trust that the patient has in the prescribing physician4 ,i am sure that the placebo results and the patient's faith in the physician as contributing factors to the effectiveness of medications do not come as a revelation4 ,we are all aware of such information4 ,our problem is how to harness this unconscious process for constructive goals4 ,the answer is through self-hypnosis4 ,self-hypnosis1 as we have explained it1 uses a technique called visual-imagery4 ,this has been referred to by many different names1 but for our purposes we'll call it visual-imagery4 ,within this technique lies one of the keys for achieving the goals that you want4 ,there have been many famous books written incorporating this technique as a basis for achievement4 ,perhaps the most famous of all is called ,think and ,grow ,rich by ,napoleon ,hill4 ,in recent years1 ,the ,magic of ,believing by ,claude ,m4 ,bristol and ,the ,power of ,positive ,thinking1 already mentioned1 have become well-known4 ,the book which gives direction to most of the books in this field is called ,self-,mastery ,through ,conscious ,auto-,suggestion by ,dr4 ,emile ,cou4 ,i am sure the older readers of this book have heard of his famous saying1 which ,i will repeat here for emphasis4 ,day by day1 in every way1 ,i am getting better and better4 ,invariably1 in all these books1 there is reference to the ,biblical quotation1 ,as a man thinketh in his heart1 so is he4 ,as the reader can deduce1 we are not theorizing about a startling new discovery4 ,the technique is as ancient as man himself and his dream of a better tomorrow4 ,all books using the visual-imagery technique tell you to paint a vivid1 mental picture of the material things you wish to acquire1 if it is a case of material wealth4 ,for personal improvement1 they tell you to paint a vivid picture of the individual you want to be4 ,in most cases1 you are told to do this in a relaxed or meditative state with as few distractions as possible4 ,the next two requirements are constant repetition 7conditioning7 and a burning desire 7motivation7 to achieve what you set out to do4 ,aren't these books really talking about self-hypnosis8 ,aren't they describing precisely the techniques of self-hypnosis8 ,the terminology is different1 but the approach is the same4 ,with these techniques there is an aim to direct thinking1 picturization1 positive thinking1 suggestions and constructive thoughts or images to the inner self or real self4 ,aren't they once again really talking about the subconscious mind8 ,i have no argument with any workable approach to emotional maturity1 but in many cases we are actually becoming involved with the meaning of words 7semantics74 ,the quickest way to the subconscious is through self-hypnosis4 ,in this self-hypnotic state1 you are able to consciously direct suggestions to your subconscious mind4 ,chapter #e ,how to ,arouse ,yourself from the ,self-,hypnotic ,state ,you will note that this chapter precedes instruction on how to attain self-hypnosis4 ,the reason for this is to alleviate whatever anxiety you may have in regard to the question1 ,if ,i'm hypnotized1 how do ,i awaken myself8 ,it is important to understand that even though you are hypnotized1 you are in control1 are aware of your surroundings1 what is going on about you1 can think clearly and can arouse yourself very easily4 ,it is only necessary to say or think1 ,i shall now open my eyes and wake up feeling fine4 ,you could also give yourself a specific count and say1 ,as ,i count to five1 ,i'll open my eyes and wake up feeling wonderfully well and refreshed4 ,one 444 two 444 three 444 four 444 five4 ,it should be remembered that while we sometimes use the word sleep to describe the hypnotic state1 we are not actually referring to true sleep4 ,this accounts for much of the confusion4 ,the individual thinks1 ,if ,i'm asleep1 how can ,i awaken myself8 ,if the subject were asleep in the true sense of the word1 this would be impossible4 ,actually1 the subject is in a special or heightened state of awareness4 ,in self-hypnosis1 he is extremely conscious although his general physical appearance is one of passiveness4 ,in the self-hypnotic state1 the individual consciously gives himself whatever suggestions he desires4 ,this proves he is conscious and1 therefore1 can awaken himself with the appropriate suggestions4 ,occasionally1 the subject falls asleep while giving himself suggestions or while relaxing to get into the right psychological mood4 ,naturally1 in this case1 the subject will awaken in due course4 ,if the subject practices hypnosis when he is normally set to fall asleep in bed1 he would awaken refreshed in the morning at his usual time4 ,before beginning to give yourself therapeutic suggestions1 you could give yourself the following suggestions which give you a specific length of time that you will work with self-hypnosis3 ,i shall work with self-hypnosis for #ae minutes4 ,at the end of that time1 ,i shall open my eyes and wake up feeling wonderfully well1 wide awake1 confident1 cheerful and optimistic4 ,the moment ,i open my eyes1 ,i'll feel refreshed4 ,in case of any outside danger1 ,i'll be able to awaken immediately1 be fully alert and act accordingly4 ,you will notice that these suggestions take into consideration the possibility of something happening of danger to the individual1 such as fire1 etc4 ,these points arise in the minds of most individuals attempting self-hypnosis and are well taken4 ,you could also set an alarm clock to awaken you at a designated time4 ,let us assume to arouse yourself you gave yourself a suggestion to open your eyes and be wide awake at the count of five4 ,you count to five and for some reason you are unable to open your eyes4 ,first of all1 ,,don',t ,,worry4 ,remain relaxed and give yourself the suggestions over again1 emphasizing to yourself that at the count of five you will absolutely1 positively be able to open your eyes very easily and will feel fine4 ,you then begin the count again reiterating between each number that you will positively open your eyes at the count of five and be wide awake4 ,this should do it4 ,should this not do it1 may ,i reassure you again1 ,,don',t ,,become ,,alarmed4 ,relax for a few minutes and try again4 ,you'll be able to open your eyes and wake up4 ,i hope ,i haven't frightened you with the prospect of not being able to awaken4 ,i bring this up only to acquaint you with the procedure to use4 ,actually1 the problem of dehypnotization is a rare one4 ,i should point out a very important fact4 ,i have never had a subject practicing or using self-hypnosis tell me he had the least bit of difficulty in awakening himself from the self-induced hypnotic state4 ,i have had persons tell me that they heard or read of a case where the hypnotist could not bring the subject out of the hypnotic state1 and1 as a result1 the subject slept for so many days4 ,not one of the stories could be documented4 ,years ago1 for publicity purposes1 stage hypnotists would have a subject sleep in a store window for several days4 ,this was on a voluntary basis1 though1 and should not be confused with what we are discussing4 ,in working with subjects1 ,i have very rarely had a subject who did not awaken at a specific count1 but ,i have had this experience4 ,i have usually found that the subject is so relaxed that he just didn't want to awaken for fear of losing this pleasant sensation4 ,when the subject doesn't awaken1 ,i merely ask him in a calm manner1 ,why don't you wish to wake up8 ,you can answer me without awakening from the hypnotic state4 ,he usually replies he'd like to remain in this state for another five minutes or so4 ,i agree to this extended period while getting a firm commitment from him that he will awaken after this period4 ,this is usually sufficient to bring the subject out of the hypnotic state4 ,occasionally1 the instructions to wake up are not clear to the subject4 ,if this is the case1 clearer instructions should be given4 ,you could also deepen the hypnotic state and then give suggestions to awaken at a specific count in a very authoritarian manner4 ,every so often1 ,i have found that the subject has fallen into a natural sleep and just hasn't heard the instructions4 ,in this case ,i raise my voice which is usually sufficient or gently shake the subject awakening him as you would any sleeping person4 ,i would like to relate a rather interesting experience that ,i had with a male subject4 ,i had worked with this particular subject six times previous to this occasion4 ,he was a good hypnotic subject1 and he failed to awaken in the usual manner4 ,since he had carried out several posthypnotic suggestions1 it was rather perplexing to analyze what had happened4 ,after about ten minutes1 he finally agreed while he was under hypnosis to awaken at a given count4 ,i asked him what was the nature of the difficulty4 ,he replied1 ,i wanted to see how you would react4 ,in conclusion1 having difficulty in dehypnotizing yourself is extremely rare4 ,should it happen1 keep calm1 and repeat the suggestions with emphasis4 ,even in hetero-hypnosis1 where the hypnotist hypnotizes a subject1 it is extremely rare4 ,there are explainable psychodynamic factors for this4 ,however1 they can be met adequately while the subject is under hypnosis4 ,chapter #f ,how to ,attain ,self-,hypnosis ,let us begin with the hypothesis that anyone can learn and practice1 to some degree1 the science of self-hypnosis4 ,we shall assume that you have carefully thought out what you want to accomplish4 ,you have1 through self-analysis1 come up with reasonable goals of therapy and self-improvement4 ,the next step is the acquisition of the hypnotic state1 per se4 ,before giving you the specific instructions1 ,i would like to clarify a question which invariably arises in teaching a student self-hypnosis4 ,it is3 ,are the suggestions that ,i give myself as effective as the ones you would give me in hetero-hypnosis8 ,it is natural to assume that the suggestions of the hypnotist would be more effective than those given by the subject himself1 but both have the same intrinsic value4 ,it is well to remember that all hypnosis is really self-hypnosis1 and all hetero-suggestions are transposed into self-suggestions4 ,if the hypnotist firmly suggests1 ,from this moment1 you will feel very confident in all life situations1 the subject automatically and unconsciously rephrases the statement1 ,from this moment1 ,i will feel very confident in all life situations4 ,the subject1 ordinarily1 mentally or aloud1 repeats all suggestions using the pronoun ,i instead of you4 ,the easiest and quickest way to learn self-hypnosis is to be hypnotized and given a posthypnotic suggestion to the effect that you will be able to put yourself into the hypnotic state at a given stimulus whenever you desire to do so4 ,the hypnotist need not be a professional4 ,anyone understanding the rudiments of hypnosis can do this4 ,however1 let us assume you want to learn self-hypnosis and cannot find help4 ,if you understand and consciously practice the instructions that ,i shall outline1 you will attain your goal4 ,sit in an easy chair or recline on a sofa or bed4 ,next1 choose a point of eye fixation on the ceiling1 preferably a spot behind you which would normally cause eye fatigue or strain4 ,now1 breathe very slowly and deeply4 ,as you do this1 repeat1 aloud or mentally1 the word sleep as you inhale and deep sleep as you exhale4 ,do this for several minutes in a very monotonous manner until such time as you find yourself getting drowsy4 ,next1 suggest to yourself that your eyelids are becoming heavy and tired4 ,the goal is to acquire eye closure using this method4 ,you want to reach a state where it is uncomfortable to keep the eyes open4 ,once you get your eyes closing1 seemingly of their own volition1 you have reached the first step in achieving self-hypnosis4 ,you can repeat to yourself such suggestions as1 ,my eyelids are becoming very heavy and tired 444 ,my eyes are becoming very watery 444 ,my eyelids are blinking 444 ,i just want to close my eyes 444 ,the moment ,i close my eyelids1 ,i shall fall into a deep1 sound1 hypnotic sleep 444 ,even though in a deep state of hypnosis1 ,i shall be aware of my surroundings and be able to direct posthypnotic suggestions to my subconscious mind4 ,when your eyelids actually become heavy or when your eyes actually begin to water1 you intensify these feelings by repeating affirmative suggestions along these very lines4 ,this is known as the feed-back technique and helps to reinforce the actual condition that exists4 ,proceeding in this way hastens the actual closing of the eyes and attainment of the hypnotic state1 per se4 ,let us assume that you practice this procedure and seemingly nothing happens4 ,continue to practice it again and again until such time as you are able to achieve an eye closure4 ,you will eventually be able to do this within a relatively short period of time4 ,one of the best times to practice the technique just given is when you are falling asleep at night4 ,the lights are out and you are lying in bed4 ,choose an imaginary spot above and behind your eye level so there is some strain on the eye muscles4 ,now begin giving yourself suggestions that your eyelids are becoming heavy1 etc4 ,the reason this period is such an excellent time to practice self-hypnosis is that the suggestions you give yourself spill over into your subconscious as you drift from consciousness to unconsciousness4 ,it's like telling yourself to wake up at a certain time in the morning4 ,the suggestion reaches your subconscious and activates you consciously to waken4 ,using this approach1 you can give yourself dynamic1 constructive suggestions at this time as well as giving yourself the posthypnotic suggestion that the next time you practice self-hypnosis1 you will fall into a deeper1 sound1 hypnotic state at the count of three4 ,you also emphasize that your eyelids will close involuntarily whenever you relax for five minutes and afterwards count to three4 ,this conditioning process will be augmented by the use of the sleep period4 ,the suggestions will tend to work unconsciously during this period and hasten your attainment of the constructive goals as well as the self-hypnotic goal itself4 ,once you have achieved eye closure1 deepen the hypnotic state by the following suggestions3 ,as ,i count to three1 ,i shall go deeper and deeper into a profound1 hypnotic state4 ,as ,i count to three1 ,i shall find myself becoming more and more relaxed4 ,as ,i count to three1 ,i shall fall into a deep1 hypnotic sleep4 ,you repeat these suggestions many times1 actually trying on a conscious level to feel sleepier1 more relaxed1 more at ease4 ,in doing this1 you take on the characteristics of a deeply hypnotized subject4 ,part of the difficulty in learning self-hypnosis is that the subject is aiming at a state of mind in which he has no experience4 ,if ,i say1 ,act happy or ,act sad1 there is an immediate reaction from your experiential background1 and you can react accordingly4 ,if you have never seen anyone hypnotized and ,i say1 ,act as though you were hypnotized1 you must1 of necessity1 act in a manner that you would assume approximated that of hypnosis4 ,if you had actually seen someone hypnotized1 you would naturally take on the characteristics you had observed4 ,this would either be done consciously or unconsciously4 ,some individuals describe the hypnotic state as a state of complete relaxation4 ,many get a feeling of detachment2 others a feeling of disassociation1 as though their entire being was only thought4 ,some get a floating or drifting feeling1 likening the experience to lying on deep clouds4 ,others experience a heavy1 pleasant1 sinking feeling4 ,still others get a feeling of peace and serenity4 ,many describe the hypnotic state as being akin to the state just prior to falling asleep or like daydreaming1 and they experience the same reactions4 ,yet1 there are some who do not feel a definite change4 ,they describe it by saying1 ,i just felt that ,i had my eyes closed4 ,i heard everything and was completely aware at all times4 ,since it is possible to direct your feelings 7reactions71 ,i would suggest that you aim for a completely relaxed1 comfortable state4 ,you have now reached the point where your eyes are closed1 and you have given yourself further suggestions to deepen the state of hypnosis4 ,this has taken from about six to ten minutes4 ,you are not sure1 though1 that you are under hypnosis4 ,there are many ways to test this1 and ,i shall outline one of these tests later in this chapter2 however1 for your initial attempts1 it isn't too important whether or not you are under hypnosis4 ,you are still to give yourself the posthypnotic suggestion that the next time you attempt to hypnotize yourself you will fall into a deeper and sounder state after you have relaxed for about five minutes and counted to three4 ,in your initial attempts1 you will be trying to establish a conditioned response to the count of three which will subsequently cause your eyes to close and put you under hypnosis4 ,eventually1 you should react instantly to the count of three or any other cue you may use to trigger the response4 ,the key words or stimulus become associated with the action that you seek4 ,through repetition1 just thinking about the stimulus can bring on the response4 ,this is known as ideomotor action and is present in the waking as well as the hypnotic state4 ,pavlov's famous experiments which induced dogs to salivate when a bell was rung after previously having had food fed to them at the same time are examples of this type of conditioning4 ,don't we generally become hungry if someone tells us it's noon and time for lunch when1 in fact1 it's only #aa o'clock8 ,i had a common experience recently that ,i am sure many readers have shared4 ,one of my neighbors1 seeing my car was parked in front of my house and knowing ,i was home1 called to say he was dropping in to see me4 ,while working on the manuscript of this book1 ,i thought ,i heard the doorbell as ,i was typing4 ,i went to the front door and no one was there4 ,i even walked around the house looking for him because ,i was so certain ,i heard the bell4 ,this is another example of an ideomotor action4 ,i told my friend about it when he arrived approximately #cj minutes later4 ,he looked at me rather whimsically1 and we both shared a laugh4 ,haven't you thought you heard the phone ring when you were waiting for a call8 ,in the chapter1 ,how ,does ,self-,hypnosis ,work1 stress was laid on the importance of the visual-imagery technique4 ,during every attempt to achieve self-hypnosis1 you attempt to visualize yourself going into the hypnotic state4 ,once you have deepened the state1 you begin the process of visualizing yourself exactly the way you want to be4 ,you may experience difficulty at first1 but as you keep at it1 you will be able to picture yourself the way you want4 ,you use the visual-imagery technique whether you think you are under hypnosis or not4 ,these images become clear as you constantly hammer home these suggestions4 ,this is the exact procedure necessary1 and you needn't complicate it4 ,let us suppose that you are getting your eyelids to close at the count of three and have achieved a good state of relaxation4 ,with these prerequisites1 you can anticipate going deeper into the hypnotic state4 ,actually1 being able to get the eyes to close at a specific count is the first test in determining if the subject has gone under hypnosis4 ,if you have conditioned yourself this far1 then you can go to the next step4 ,the next test is called the swallowing test4 ,you mentally give yourself suggestions that as you slowly1 to yourself1 count to #aj1 you will get an irresistible urge to swallow one time4 ,you further suggest that this will happen even before you reach the count of #aj4 ,you then begin the count4 ,one 444 ,my throat is parched1 and ,i feel an irresistible urge to swallow one time4 ,two 444 ,my lips are becoming very dry1 and ,i feel an irresistible urge to swallow4 ,three 444 ,my throat feels very dry1 and ,i feel an irresistible urge to swallow one time4 ,four 444 ,before ,i reach the count of #aj1 the urge to swallow one time will become irresistible because my lips and throat are so dry4 ,five 444 ,once ,i swallow1 ,i shall no longer have the urge to swallow again1 and as ,i swallow one time1 ,i shall fall into a deeper and sounder state of hypnosis4 ,continue with similar suggestions1 repeating and affirming the suggestions about swallowing4 ,once you actually swallow1 you discontinue the suggestions and1 instead1 give yourself suggestions that you are falling deeper and deeper into a sound hypnotic state and that the constructive suggestions you now give yourself will work for you4 ,once again you practice visual-imagery1 seeing yourself the way you want to be1 while fortifying this image with forceful1 positive suggestions4 ,you close by giving yourself suggestions that you will enter the hypnotic state whenever you relax for five minutes and count to three4 ,the suggestions are just as effective whether given aloud or mentally4 ,many subjects report that they are reluctant when it comes to giving suggestions to themselves4 ,i can only say that as you continue to work with yourself1 you will develop confidence in giving yourself suggestions4 ,in order for the suggestions to be effective1 they cannot be given in a reticent or hesitant manner4 ,they must be given with enthusiasm and anticipation4 ,if you assiduously follow these instructions1 you will derive the benefits you seek in the shortest possible time and witness the positive1 tangible results of your suggestions and efforts4 ,in the next chapter1 you'll learn how to deepen the self-hypnotic state4 ,chapter #g ,deepening the ,self-,hypnotic ,state ,for each progressive test1 it is usually necessary to have accomplished the preceding tests4 ,however1 this is not an absolute rule4 ,frequently1 a subject responds to tests at the beginning of the depth scale and then to others at the end of the depth scale4 ,certain tests in between do not work4 ,i have had the following experience more than once while teaching one of my classes in self-hypnosis4 ,in testing the depth of hypnosis1 ,i run the gamut of all of the tests from light to deep4 ,in this way1 the subject can ascertain how far he has progressed4 ,one frequent test for the deep state is to give the subject a posthypnotic suggestion to the effect that the next cigarette he smokes will have a vile taste and it will be absolutely impossible for him to take more than three puffs4 ,it is further suggested that after the third puff1 the cigarette taste will be so unbearable it will become necessary for him to extinguish the cigarette4 ,we can expect an excellent hypnotic subject to comply with these posthypnotic suggestions1 but a subject who hasn't even passed the eye closure test 7test ,no4 #a7 or any other test may unexpectedly react perfectly to the cigarette test which we know is a standard test for determining if the subject has entered into a deep state of hypnosis4 ,how can you account for it8 ,there is no simple or positive answer4 ,if we hadn't given him this particular test1 he would have felt that he wasn't making progress in his determination to become a good hypnotic subject4 ,because of this1 he might not have given himself therapeutic suggestions because he would feel he hadn't reached a state of hypnosis which would benefit him4 ,remember1 follow the instructions of giving yourself whatever therapeutic suggestions you want1 regardless of the fact that you feel that nothing has happened4 ,i have seen many subjects who were bewildered because certain tests did not work1 yet were pleased because of very gratifying overall results from using self-hypnosis4 ,they were baffled because of their inability to pass certain tests which they felt were a prerequisite to the success of constructive suggestions they gave themselves4 ,it is commonly felt that the deeper the state of hypnosis1 the better the results4 ,in actual practice1 ,i have not found this to be so4 ,i have had excellent results in a relatively short period of time with subjects who only achieved a light state1 and it has been necessary to work with others who achieved a deep state of hypnosis for a longer period before lasting results were in evidence4 ,naturally1 each individual presents a different set of needs and even though the symptoms may be basically the same1 each will respond favorably when his requirements are met4 ,this happens on a conscious as well as unconscious level4 ,for example1 the mere assurance by a physician that the patient is all right and has nothing to worry about is often sufficient to bring about desirable results4 ,another example is the mother who stops the sobbing of her hurt child by a loving kiss4 ,a logical approach1 pointing out to the child that he really didn't hurt himself1 would never have worked4 ,we have all heard stories of primitive tribesmen who have died because they knew they were the objects of death wishes by another member of the tribe4 ,the key to achieving a greater depth of self-hypnosis lies in the use of the visual-imagery technique4 ,you see yourself going into the hypnotic state deeper and deeper4 ,you even picture yourself1 using this technique1 passing various progressive hypnotic tests4 ,the second part of the key lies in giving yourself a posthypnotic suggestion that each succeeding attempt will put you into a deeper state as a result of a given stimulus--such as the count of three4 ,the following instructions should not be attempted usually unless you have been successful in achieving the two basic tests--the eye closure as well as the uncontrollable urge to swallow followed by the physical act of swallowing at a specific count4 ,if the conditioning process works for these two tests1 you have achieved the lethargic state of hypnosis4 ,this is the first state of hypnosis and is generally referred to as the light state4 ,therapeutic suggestions can work admirably in this state4 ,the next stage of hypnosis is known as the cataleptic state and is referred to as the medium state4 ,generally1 hypnosis is divided into three states3 the lethargic 7light state72 the cataleptic 7medium state72 and the somnambulistic 7deep state74 ,as you deepen the hypnotic state1 you can accomplish the progressive tests that ,i shall outline for you4 ,i'll also number these tests for the convenience of having a reference4 ,deepening the hypnotic state requires the same type of practice or conditioning as the first two steps4 ,let us call eye closure--,no4 #a1 and swallowing--,no4 #b4 ,we are now ready to proceed to the hand tingling test--,no4 #c4 ,you have just completed tests ,no4 #a and #b2 you are in a completely relaxed state4 ,now give yourself the following suggestions3 ,as ,i count to ten and even before ,i reach the count of ten1 ,i shall feel a light tingling or numb feeling in my right hand4 ,as you slowly begin the count of ten1 you keep repeating suggestions to the effect that your right hand is beginning to tingle4 ,once again1 you practice the technique of visual-imagery1 tapping your experiential background for this feeling4 ,you can recall how it feels when your hand goes to sleep4 ,once you get an initial feeling of lightness1 tingling or numbness1 reinforce this feeling by the feed-back technique as you did with the eye closure test4 ,as you practice this procedure1 it will work with greater effectiveness4 ,the following is a very important point to remember4 ,be sure that you give yourself a posthypnotic suggestion that the tingling1 light or numb sensation will disappear as you continue to count to #ae4 ,for example1 ,as ,i count to #ae1 the tingling feeling in my right hand will disappear1 and ,i shall experience only normal sensations4 ,eleven 444 ,the tingling feeling is leaving4 ,twelve 444 ,now it is leaving faster4 ,thirteen 444 ,i can feel my hand returning to normal4 ,fourteen 444 ,the tingling feeling has left4 ,fifteen 444 ,my right hand feels perfectly normal4 ,you could try a variation of this test by saying your nose or one of your toes will itch at a specific count4 ,once this test is accomplished1 you are ready for the foot test--,no4 #d4 ,you will remember that the key to achieving a greater depth of hypnosis lies in visualizing yourself going deeper with each attempt and accomplishing progressive hypnotic tests4 ,keep this in mind4 ,for a moment1 let us go back to the hand tingling test--,no4 #c4 ,once you have been successful in accomplishing this test1 use the visual-imagery technique to see yourself successfully responding to the foot test4 ,when you have actually accomplished test ,no4 #d1 you see yourself accomplishing the hand levitation test--,no4 #e4 ,in other words1 you use each step to enhance a greater receptivity for the following progressive test4 ,as you couple this approach with posthypnotic suggestions that you will go deeper and deeper into the hypnotic state at a given stimulus1 you set into motion a conditioned response mechanism which must ultimately guide you into a profound state of hypnosis4 ,the foot test can be accomplished while sitting or lying down4 ,the idea of this test is to imagine that your feet are stuck to the floor or that your legs are so heavy that they are impossible to raise until you reach a certain count4 ,it is best to begin this test by trying to capture a heavy1 relaxed feeling in your legs4 ,you give yourself specific suggestions along these lines3 ,as ,i count to five1 ,i shall notice a very heavy1 relaxed1 pleasant feeling in both legs4 ,it will be a very comfortable feeling2 a feeling of complete relaxation4 ,you then begin the count of ten1 following out the idea of the other tests you have successfully accomplished4 ,you should remember that there is no time limit and you take as much time as you need in order to get the relaxed1 heavy feeling4 ,once you get the relaxed1 heavy feeling1 you use the visual-imagery technique to try to picture your legs stuck to the floor4 ,if you are lying down1 imagine you are covered by a heavy blanket which is tightly tucked under the mattress1 making it impossible for you to raise your legs4 ,if sitting up1 ,i tell the subject to imagine that his shoes are stuck to the floor with iron glue1 and since his feet are in the shoes1 it is impossible to lift them until the specific count which will enable him to do so4 ,here are the suggestions you can use for the second part of this test4 ,as ,i continue to count to ten1 ,i shall find that it will be impossible for me to raise my legs4 ,i shall try at the count of ten1 but it will be absolutely impossible to raise my legs until ,i count to #ae4 ,at that time1 ,i shall be able to raise my legs easily1 and the heavy feeling will leave as well4 ,you then continue with the count1 giving yourself appropriate suggestions4 ,once this test is accomplished1 you use the visual-imagery technique to see yourself accomplishing the hand levitation test--,no4 #e4 ,be sure you give yourself the posthypnotic suggestion that the next time you hypnotize yourself1 you will fall into a deeper and sounder state4 ,i'll assume that you have been able to get a relaxed1 heavy feeling in your legs4 ,you have reached the count of five and are ready to proceed further4 ,here are sample suggestions you can use3 ,six 444 ,my legs are becoming extremely heavy4 ,seven 444 ,i'll be unable to lift them until ,i count to #ae4 ,eight 444 ,i feel very comfortable2 my legs are becoming heavier and heavier4 ,nine 444 ,my entire body is completely relaxed1 and my legs are so heavy that they are impossible to lift4 ,ten 444 ,i'm in a very deep hypnotic state1 and it is absolutely impossible for me to move my legs until ,i count to #ae4 ,at this point1 you actually try to raise your legs4 ,if you can't do it1 you have reached the cataleptic stage4 ,should you not be able to raise your legs1 don't become frightened4 ,all you need to say is3 ,i can now move my legs4 ,you could also say3 ,as ,i count to three1 ,i'll be able to move my legs4 ,however1 since we have elected originally to be able to move the legs at the count of #ae1 it would be best to follow out this pattern4 ,you could at this time merely continue to count to #ae1 at which time you would be able to move your legs4 ,i prefer giving suggestions between each count as follows3 ,eleven 444 ,the heavy feeling is leaving1 and ,i shall be able to raise my legs at the count of #ae4 ,twelve 444 ,i can feel the heavy1 relaxed feeling leaving4 ,thirteen 444 ,i am beginning to move my legs4 ,fourteen 444 ,i am lifting my legs more and more4 ,fifteen 444 ,i have perfect control over my bodily functions and legs2 ,i am lifting and moving my legs2 the heavy feeling is dissipating2 ,i am in complete control2 ,i can now give myself posthypnotic suggestions that will be very effective and beneficial4 ,give yourself whatever suggestions you want at this time4 ,let us suppose that you tried the foot test for some time and were unsuccessful4 ,perhaps this puzzles you1 and you wonder why it didn't work4 ,perhaps you were able to get a heavy feeling in the legs1 but the second part of the test didn't work4 ,the following information will help you to understand why you were unable to complete this cataleptic test4 ,either you had not conditioned yourself sufficiently1 or you weren't really letting go enough to enter into a deeper state of hypnosis4 ,most subjects need to test themselves and feel secure every step of the way4 ,they don't just plunge into the cataleptic or somnambulistic stages immediately4 ,in this connection1 ,i believe it can be compared with the bather who goes into the water one step at a time4 ,even the playful splashing directed at him by friends does not compel him to duck under the water4 ,instead1 he continues to slowly go deeper and deeper until he is completely submerged4 ,wouldn't it have been easier to duck under all at once8 ,perhaps1 but ,i'm sure you have either experienced the same thing yourself or seen it happen4 ,the analogy should be clear4 ,the subject is reluctant to do what he considers as giving up his control when1 in reality1 he is really more and more in control of himself as he penetrates the deeper levels of hypnosis4 ,in reality1 the subject who does not or cannot raise his feet really could move in case of emergency1 even without counting to #ae4 ,he has1 in effect1 entered into a state in which it is too much bother to lift his feet4 ,a common example of this frame of mind is when you remain in bed in the morning even though you know you will be late to work4 ,you are just too comfortable to move1 and your initiative seems paralyzed4 ,let us assume1 at this point1 that you have finally succeeded in getting the foot test to work4 ,you are now ready for the hand levitation test--,no4 #e4 ,in this test1 the goal is to get your hand to slowly rise and touch your chin4 ,once it touches your chin1 you enter into a still deeper state and lower your hand slowly to your side4 ,this test is actually combined with the hand tingling test--,no4 #c4 ,since you have been successful with test ,no4 #c1 the rest is rather simple4 ,this time as you work test ,no4 #c1 aim for a light1 pleasant feeling in your right hand4 ,once you get this reaction1 you give yourself suggestions that your right hand will now rise and touch your chin4 ,as soon as it does1 you will fall into a deeper state and lower your hand4 ,here are the suggestions that you can use3 ,as ,i count to ten and even before ,i reach the count of ten1 ,i shall have an irresistible impulse to slowly raise my hand to my chin4 ,as ,i progress with the counting1 my hand will slowly rise1 and the impulse will become stronger and stronger4 ,as soon as my hand touches my chin1 the impulse will leave4 ,i will then lower my hand and fall into a very deep hypnotic state4 ,i shall be fully aware of what is happening1 my surroundings1 and will be able to give myself beneficial posthypnotic suggestions4 ,at this point you start counting to ten1 giving yourself suggestions that your right hand which already has a light feeling will begin to slowly rise to your chin4 ,time the counting to coincide with the actual physical act of raising your hand4 ,you are trying to feel an involuntary urge to raise your hand4 ,the movement itself should also be of an unconscious rather than conscious nature4 ,a conscious raising of your hand to your chin is not what you are looking for in this test4 ,should you experience difficulty in attaining the first movement of your hand1 you can give yourself assistance by consciously and slowly raising your hand just to get it started4 ,the rest of the movement1 as mentioned1 must be automatic4 ,should you find it necessary to start your hand rising1 use the feed-back technique to continue the movement4 ,you can give yourself the following suggestions3 ,one 444 ,my right hand is beginning to rise4 ,two 444 ,my right hand is very1 very light1 and ,i am getting an irresistible urge to slowly raise it4 ,three 444 ,this feeling is getting stronger and stronger4 ,four 444 ,my right hand is rising more and more4 ,five 444 ,my hand is rising toward my chin4 ,six 444 ,as soon as my hand touches my chin1 ,i shall fall into a deeper and sounder state of hypnosis4 ,seven 444 ,my hand is rising closer and closer toward my chin4 ,eight 444 ,the feeling of lightness is becoming stronger and stronger4 ,nine 444 ,my right hand is about to touch my chin2 as soon as it does1 ,i'll fall into a very deep hypnotic state4 ,ten 444 ,my right hand is touching my chin2 ,i'm falling deeper and deeper into a sound hypnotic state2 ,i'll now slowly lower my hand and continue falling into a deep1 sound1 pleasant state of hypnosis4 ,the light feeling has left my hand4 ,you should not attempt to memorize the exact phraseology for any of the tests4 ,you are to merely use the suggestions that have been written out for you as a guide4 ,the timing of the suggestions is the paramount consideration in attaining successful results4 ,don't be impatient4 ,take as much time as you need4 ,should you find yourself unsuccessful after ten or fifteen minutes1 drop the test and come back to it another day4 ,i haven't found that working at a specific test all day long accomplishes the end result4 ,it is best to work for a specific period every day4 ,in this way1 the conditioned response pattern is established for the success of the tests as well as the success of the posthypnotic suggestions that you have given yourself4 ,you should bear in mind that if you have been successful in achieving the first five tests1 you have reached a medium state of hypnosis1 and posthypnotic suggestions will be extremely effective4 ,in the next chapter1 you'll learn1 psychologically1 how to go even deeper into hypnosis4 ,you'll learn those psychological factors that are important to know and that can contribute to your development into an excellent hypnotic subject4 ,following this1 the subsequent chapter will give you further tests and instructions for developing into a somnambulistic subject4 ,chapter #h ,what ,you ,should ,know ,about ,becoming ,an ,excellent ,subject ,becoming an excellent subject follows the same general rules for becoming proficient in any other endeavor4 ,it depends upon your motivation1 persistence and willingness to devote time and study to the subject4 ,let us agree that most individuals can learn to play a musical instrument to some degree4 ,this degree is usually sufficient for their own needs4 ,to become a virtuoso1 however1 it is necessary to study the instrument and devote a great deal of energy and time to practice4 ,the same example could be given for most undertakings4 ,anyone can learn to hit a golf ball1 but being able to control the direction and distance and become a skilled golfer is quite another matter4 ,if you have been successful in accomplishing the first five tests1 you can consider yourself a good hypnotic subject4 ,becoming an excellent subject entails following the same procedure used in accomplishing the first five tests4 ,some may proceed very easily into the somnambulistic state1 and others may have a difficult time reaching this deepest stage4 ,understanding some of the psychology involved and assuming the right psychological frame of mind for the attainment of the somnambulistic state is more important than just working blindly in an attempt to get the somnambulistic tests to work4 ,being irritable1 disgusted and despondent because of your inability to go further into hypnosis is not the answer and will only lead to frustration and failure4 ,the reader is not to assume he will be a difficult subject4 ,if you have come this far1 you'll be able to continue in the same manner4 ,the topic under discussion now is brought up to prepare readers for any contingency that may arise4 ,it's like having a life preserver on a boat4 ,you hope you never need it1 but you should be prepared to use it in case of an emergency4 ,it is natural to assume that if you are willing and trying to go into the lethargic1 cataleptic or somnambulistic state1 you will be able to do so in a relatively short period of time4 ,unfortunately1 this is by no means the case4 ,many of the principles of learning and conditioning can be applied to hypnosis1 but with many subjects these laws do not seem applicable4 ,let us assume you wanted to learn to become an excellent typist4 ,this is a reasonable goal and all that is necessary is to continue practicing until you have reached the proficiency you set out to achieve4 ,this proficiency would1 as a rule1 follow application of the laws of learning and conditioning4 ,this isn't always so in a subject's attempt to become somnambulistic4 ,when the subject progresses from one stage to another in a classical manner1 the theory works admirably1 but what happens when a subject cannot seem to progress any further8 ,he has reached a plateau and is unable to climb higher4 ,he seems to have reached a psychological impasse or stalemate4 ,it is easy to say that the subject is thwarted by a subconscious block and let it go at that4 ,this1 however1 doesn't help him in his dilemma4 ,it's like telling the stranded motorist that the reason his car has stalled is because the motor isn't running4 ,the following information will be helpful to those who haven't been able to reach the first stages of hypnosis1 as well as those who apparently can go only so far4 ,actually1 the same principles are involved4 ,if the subject doesn't respond or responds to a limited degree1 there evidently is a cause or reason for this poor response4 ,in order to continue this discussion1 it will be necessary for us to agree that the resistance can be either conscious or unconscious4 ,if the subject insists that he is trying to let go1 has nothing to hide1 is not afraid of hypnosis1 understands what is involved and has strong motivation1 we can only assume that the resistance must be unconscious4 ,usually1 it will be necessary to work through this unconscious resistance before the subject responds4 ,if the subject is conditioning himself1 this will involve a great deal of introspection1 and even then it is an extremely difficult job4 ,one doesn't usually have proper insight into one's own emotional make-up4 ,the end result is that one can only rationalize about his behavior4 ,let us explore some interesting aspects of hypnosis with a view toward helping you if you are having difficulty responding the way you desire4 ,i have had the following paradoxical situation happen many times4 ,a subject calls my office1 requesting to be conditioned for self-hypnosis4 ,he further requests that he be allowed to bring along a member of his family or a friend for the hypnotic session4 ,these individuals usually ask if ,i object to this procedure4 ,i interpreted this request as a sign of distrust during my early career as a professional hypnotist4 ,i was affronted by the idea of the unspoken insinuation verbalized by this request4 ,didn't they trust me8 ,between trying to defend myself and assuring them that there was no need for another person being present1 since my secretary could observe the procedure1 ,i usually won the argument but lost the client4 ,as ,i developed understanding into the needs of these persons1 ,i began to realize that the request was not directed at my integrity1 but was a safeguard for their ego4 ,illustration ,here is an interesting sidelight that has happened frequently in regard to the foregoing situation4 ,i would request the subject to sit near my desk and tell the onlooker to sit in back and to the side of the subject1 away from the subject's view so as not to distract him4 ,in this situation1 ,i invariably place the hypnodisc on a spinning1 portable phonograph turntable and turn it upright for the subject to look at4 ,the hypnodisc1 which is made of stiff cardboard1 looks like a #ab-;inch phonograph record and has concentric heavy lines drawn on it4 ,as it spins1 the subject feels he is being pulled toward the center4 ,at the same time1 it causes his eyes to become very tired4 ,i have included a drawing of it on this page for those who are not familiar with this hypnotic device4 ,the revolving hypnodisc causes a physiological reaction and must work with everyone4 ,you feed back certain known physiological responses for the successful attainment of hypnosis4 ,the onlooker has no choice but to look at the hypnodisc as well4 ,as ,i suggest to the subject that his eyes are becoming heavy and tired and that soon he'll have an irresistible impulse to close them1 the onlooker is naturally hearing the same suggestion4 ,because this person feels apart from the hypnotic situation1 there can be no conscious resistance4 ,since these defenses are not hampering the attainment of hypnosis1 the onlooker may readily fall under hypnosis4 ,more than once1 the onlooker has confided to me that he was getting a better night's sleep1 was feeling wonderfully well or had derived other benefits since coming to my office as an observer4 ,the exact situation happens when the stage hypnotist is hypnotizing subjects on the stage4 ,many times a person in the audience who had no intention of becoming hypnotized becomes influenced in the same manner4 ,incidentally1 these individuals make the best subjects4 ,there are interesting theories as to why a subject responds or does not respond to hypnosis4 ,i think the reader would find some of these theories interesting and perhaps gain some insight into his own hypnotic behavior4 ,these theories are based primarily on a psychoanalytical approach to hypnosis4 ,the most prevalent theory is that the hypnotist represents either the father image 7paternal or fear hypnosis7 or the mother image 7maternal or love hypnosis74 ,the father usually represents an authoritarian figure4 ,the subject's identification can be on a conscious or subconscious level4 ,let us suppose the subject has ambivalent feelings toward his father4 ,because of this1 he may not respond4 ,here is an opportunity to frustrate the authoritative 7father7 figure4 ,the only trouble with this theory is that if there is an excellent relationship between the father and subject1 it doesn't necessarily mean that the subject will respond easily4 ,the stage hypnotist invariably uses a strong1 authoritative approach with a great deal of success1 but this approach generally does not work best in private practice4 ,i have found that for the majority of subjects the maternal approach works best4 ,perhaps the process of hypnosis awakens early unconscious memories of being put to sleep as a child4 ,some techniques that are used in hypnosis are quite similar to this4 ,the subject1 who is lying down1 is told to close his eyes and is spoken to in a quiet1 reassuring1 monotonous tone of voice4 ,the hypnotist is seated near him4 ,the hypnotist even uses the same words that the subject has heard as a child3 ,sleep4 ,go to sleep4 ,when you awaken1 you'll feel wonderfully well4 ,in fact1 ,i use some special music that ,i had recorded for inducing hypnosis4 ,the first musical selection is ,brahms' ,lullaby4 ,children's music boxes invariably contain this selection1 and the melody cannot help but activate a pleasant nostalgia4 ,it is a memory associated with love and tenderness4 ,this brings us to the fact that hypnosis may offer the subject a chance to escape from the reality of pressing problems into a state of complete irresponsibility4 ,in fact1 one theory of hypnosis equates the hypnotic state as a form of unconscious regression and need for submission4 ,the male subject may have a strong1 positive identification with his mother rather than his father4 ,it is part of the unresolved ,oedipus complex4 ,he sees his mother as a kind1 loving individual1 always ready to help4 ,even if the mother did something socially unacceptable1 the individual would defend her vehemently4 ,the father who might do something wrong would rarely be excused4 ,just the opposite is true with the female subject4 ,when asking the female child1 ,whose girl are you81 the answer is invariably1 ,daddy's girl4 ,when asking the male child1 ,whose boy are you81 the answer is invariably1 ,momma's boy4 ,we accept this transference of identification as a normal process of growing up4 ,when it isn't normally resolved1 it can account for severe personality problems4 ,one might assume1 therefore1 that a woman hypnotist could better hypnotize a male subject1 and a male hypnotist could better hypnotize a female subject1 but this is not true except for cases such as we have just mentioned4 ,one school of thought feels that there is a strong submissive tendency in all of us and hypnosis gratifies this wish4 ,the individual's need for dependence is also met4 ,in this case1 the hypnotist becomes omnipotent1 being able to alter feelings that ordinarily distress the individual4 ,normally1 adults1 when confronted by a particularly upsetting experience1 might want to be held closely by an intimate friend or member of the family4 ,don't we frequently put our arm around a friend in grief trying to comfort him8 ,the inner strength which is created by hypnosis within the total personality structure of the subject lessens dependency upon the hypnotist1 much in the same fashion that we need the doctor less as we start to recover from an illness4 ,self-hypnosis further lessens dependency for no authoritarian figure is used4 ,the subject's attitude towards authority is important to know4 ,it is well-known that officers in the army are more difficult to hypnotize than noncommissioned men4 ,the enlisted man1 by a process of indoctrination and conditioning1 is taught to obey and follow orders without reasoning4 ,the transference of authority to the hypnotist is readily accomplished because of this conditioning process4 ,the army doctor1 when treating patients psychologically1 replaces his army jacket with a regular white medical jacket to increase rapport4 ,one interesting theory is that the subject responds as he thinks the hypnotist would like him to4 ,this is termed role playing4 ,when asking a subject under hypnosis his name1 you usually get a very slow1 deliberate answer1 as though the subject were in a trance4 ,you tell him that he can answer in a normal speaking voice and tempo and his further replies are to be in the same manner as his waking state4 ,another theory along these lines is that the subject acts as he believes a hypnotized person would act4 ,this1 too1 is role playing1 but it does not explain analgesia1 such as when the dentist hypnotizes the patient and proceeds to drill a tooth4 ,no one 7with the possible exception of a highly neurotic psychic masochist7 is going to endure excruciating pain just to please the doctor4 ,one theory about hypnosis states that it allows the subject an opportunity of identifying with the hypnotist1 whom he sees as a powerful figure4 ,through this identification1 the subject is able to gain inner strength4 ,on the other hand1 the subject might rebel against the submissive nature of the hypnotic setting4 ,this could easily create anxiety which1 in turn1 could create hostility resulting in resistance of various kinds4 ,as a result of this1 the subject might begin to criticize the hypnotist1 find fault with the way he 7the subject7 is being handled1 question the judgment of the hypnotist1 or doubt the effectiveness of the hypnotic procedure4 ,many investigators assert that the rapport1 meaning the relationship between the subject and hypnotist1 is all important4 ,this is true and the relationship can and does have many ramifications4 ,in psychotherapy1 the term transference is used to denote this relationship4 ,the relationship is further described as a good or bad transference4 ,there is also a countertransference which indicates the reaction of the therapist to the patient4 ,naturally1 in order for the subject to respond1 there must be good rapport4 ,i have tried to indicate that there are complexities that may arise in the hypnotic setting4 ,there are many conflicting theories as to why a subject does or does not respond4 ,there are no set rules to follow1 and one's intuition1 experience and judgment help solve any problem that arises4 ,let me relate another frequent incident4 ,i have had subjects come to me after they were unable to be hypnotized by several other professional hypnotists4 ,they have complained that the hypnotists weren't good hypnotists because they couldn't hypnotize them4 ,after all1 they ask1 hadn't they been willing subjects8 ,my usual answer is that the fault1 if there is one1 is not with the hypnotists and really not with the subjects4 ,it is a matter of exploring what has happened and then deciding on a course of action to insure success4 ,i am firmly convinced that the subject responds when he is positively1 without equivocation1 ready to do so4 ,he keeps testing the response to make sure he is in control4 ,he fears a reduction in his voluntary level of reality attachment and control4 ,unresponsiveness proves to him that he has this control4 ,as long as he does this1 which is a natural response1 he never lets go sufficiently to attain hypnosis4 ,hypnosis1 as we know1 is a very sensitive state4 ,it requires complete faith and trust in the hypnotist4 ,if it is lacking1 the subject never does respond4 ,the phenomenon of hypnosis is entirely subjective in nature1 and its success lies within the total personality structure of the subject4 ,if there is resistance to hypnosis itself or to deepening the state1 the subject by his own honest evaluation and verbalization of his resistance can do much to become a better subject4 ,hypnosis must begin with the acceptance by the subject of certain basic fundamentals that we have already discussed rather than of the forcefulness of the hypnotist4 ,the deepening of the hypnotic state lies in the intensification of the conditioned response mechanism once it has been initiated4 ,you should not expect to achieve immediate results although sometimes this does happen4 ,as you continue to work with perseverance1 intelligence and enthusiasm1 you will definitely achieve the goals that you have set for yourself4 ,it is well to remember that you guide yourself toward the somnambulistic state1 depending upon your belief and acceptance of those principles that have been outlined for you4 ,i have attempted to point out some of the salient points and theories to keep in mind in your attempt to develop into an excellent hypnotic subject4 ,some of these only pertain to the situations where the hypnotist works with the subject4 ,many of the problems inherent in this setting are not applicable to the situation where the subject is hypnotizing himself4 ,both settings have their advantages and disadvantages4 ,as long as you proceed to follow the instructions given you1 you can feel assured that you will finally achieve self-hypnosis4 ,it should be emphasized that it is vital to adopt the right frame of mind in your attempt to achieve self-hypnosis1 particularly a deep state4 ,if you approach hypnosis with a prove-it-to-me attitude1 nothing is going to happen4 ,self-hypnosis requires practicing a set of mental exercises or mental gymnastics4 ,to acquire the ultimate from this training requires systematic conditioning4 ,the word training is used quite extensively in hypnotic literature4 ,the use of the word implies that hypnosis can be attained by a training period4 ,the literature speaks frequently of a subject being trained to respond in a certain way4 ,obviously1 this means over a certain period of time4 ,it also means you train yourself to become a good hypnotic subject4 ,it is a skill that all can acquire4 ,there are four books dealing specifically with self-hypnosis that ,i would recommend to you for further reading4 ,they are3 ,what is ,hypnosis by ,andrew ,salter1 ,hypnosis and ,self-,hypnosis by ,bernard ,hollander1 ,m4,d41 ,autogenic ,training by ,johannes ,h4 ,schultz1 ,m4,d41 and ,self-,hypnosis--,its ,theory1 ,technique and ,application by ,melvin ,powers4 ,chapter #i ,techniques for ,reaching the ,somnambulistic ,state ,as indicated in the last chapter1 the attainment of the somnambulistic stage of hypnosis can represent an extremely intricate procedure4 ,because of certain inherent characteristics of this stage1 it is easier to attain by hetero-hypnosis4 ,however1 this does not preclude the fact that it can be reached without the aid of a hypnotist4 ,more important than the testing and deepening procedures that ,i shall outline for you in this chapter are an understanding and an awareness of some of the complexities involved1 first in achieving the hypnotic state1 then deepening1 and1 finally1 reaching somnambulism4 ,there are no absolute or final answers to many of the problems that can arise4 ,you can become entangled with rationalization so easily when you want the facts to fit a particular theory4 ,i point this out to the reader because1 as the subject goes deeper1 the procedure can become more complicated4 ,there are many interesting phenomena which can be elicited in the somnambulistic state4 ,they are of interest for the most part1 to students of abnormal behavior and are pertinent from an academic viewpoint4 ,they do not fall within the province of this book or of hypnosis for therapeutic purposes and might lead the reader astray4 ,should readers be interested in further hypnotic phenomena1 ,i refer them to ,modern ,hypnosis by ,leslie ,kuhn and ,salvadore ,russo1 ,ph4,d41 ,experimental ,hypnosis by ,leslie ,le,cron1 ,time ,distortion in ,hypnosis by ,milton ,erickson1 ,m4,d4 and ,lynn ,f4 ,cooper1 ,m4,d41 and ,hypnotism--,an ,objective ,study in ,suggestibility by ,andr ,m4 ,weitzenhoffer1 ,ph4,d4 ,as discussed previously1 some individuals experience difficulty in attaining the deeper hypnotic states4 ,my advice is to be patient and to continue working with yourself4 ,it is not imperative or vital to reach the somnambulistic stage for therapeutic results4 ,it is a misconception on the part of many students that they must go into the deepest state possible to obtain results4 ,dramatic changes can come about at all levels of hypnosis4 ,the somnambulistic state is necessary in hypnotherapy when there is a need for the patient to relive some traumatic episode4 ,it is also useful when the patient is reluctant to consciously discuss certain aspects of his problem4 ,many hypnotherapeutic techniques such as amnesia1 hypermnesia1 progression1 paramnesia1 automatic writing1 dream induction1 regression1 production of experimental conflicts and crystal or mirror gazing require a somnambulistic state4 ,for those of you interested in hypnotherapy1 ,i can recommend no finer book than ,hypnotherapy of ,war ,neuroses by ,john ,g4 ,watkins1 ,ph4,d4 ,in this book1 the theory of hypnotherapy has been diagramatically presented for easy comprehension and shown to be an amalgamation of concepts and practices from various schools of thought4 ,most students of hypnosis equate the phenomenon of amnesia with the somnambulistic state4 ,the mistake they make is in trying to achieve amnesia4 ,it's similar to the dog trying to catch his tail4 ,it is impossible for the subject to effectively suggest amnesia to himself4 ,if he remembers what he was supposed to forget1 he has failed4 ,if he truly doesn't remember what he was supposed to forget1 he doesn't even remember the amnesia suggestion and can take no satisfaction from his success because he is not aware that he has accomplished the posthypnotic suggestion4 ,unless an elaborate set of posthypnotic suggestions are worked out1 it is an impossible test for self-hypnosis4 ,i know the reader is anxious to begin his conditioning for the somnambulistic state1 but there are still a few pertinent remarks which should be remembered before proceeding further4 ,the reader should not memorize verbatim any of the tests involved in proving the somnambulistic state4 ,all that is necessary to remember is the general form and the goal you seek4 ,the goal is to increase your suggestibility which1 in turn1 means deepening of the hypnotic state4 ,after each step1 you are to give yourself suggestions that you will go still deeper the next time4 ,you should also designate a specific length of time to work with self-hypnosis4 ,the suggestions are as follows3 ,i shall work with self-hypnosis for #ae minutes4 ,at the end of that time1 ,i shall open my eyes and wake up feeling wonderfully well4 ,i'll be wide awake and refreshed4 ,in case of any danger1 ,i'll be able to awaken immediately and act accordingly4 ,some hypnotists tell their subjects to make your mind a blank4 ,i suppose what they really mean is that you must try to think of only what the hypnotist is saying4 ,have you ever tried to make your mind a blank8 ,try it for a moment4 ,it's an impossibility4 ,should the hypnotist persist along these lines1 he'll never be successful4 ,it is the wrong approach4 ,the subject1 because of his inability to comply with this suggestion1 is fighting a losing battle4 ,it is also almost impossible for the subject to concentrate only on what the hypnotist is saying4 ,any word the hypnotist says can start a conscious as well as unconscious train of thought4 ,therefore1 in reality1 this1 too1 is impossible4 ,however1 it really isn't necessary that the subject keep his thoughts concentrated solely on what is being said so long as they are kept in the general area4 ,at times1 the more you try to concentrate1 the more your thoughts become scattered4 ,suppose ,i say to you1 ,forget the address #hgba ,sunset ,boulevard4 ,what happens8 ,the more you try to forget it1 the more you remember it4 ,therefore1 don't be concerned if you experience stray thoughts during the induction and deepening of hypnosis4 ,you are now ready to continue with further tests4 ,the first five tests should be mastered before continuing4 ,test ,no4 #f is referred to as the fly test4 ,in this test1 once under hypnosis1 you picture that a fly is crawling on the back of your right or left hand4 ,once you feel the fly1 you know you are deeply hypnotized4 ,you might even get an urge to move your hand and flick the fly off your hand4 ,when this happens1 you know1 of course1 that you are deeply hypnotized4 ,here is a sample of the type of suggestions to give3 ,as ,i count to ten and even before ,i reach the count of ten1 ,i shall feel a fly crawling on the back of my right hand4 ,this illusion will seem very real to me4 ,one 444 ,my right hand is completely relaxed4 ,two 444 ,i feel completely at ease4 ,three 444 ,i am beginning to feel a pleasant tingling feeling on the back of my right hand4 ,four 444 ,this feeling is becoming strong4 ,five 444 ,it feels as though a fly is moving on the back of my hand4 ,six 444 ,i have had this same feeling before4 ,seven 444 ,i can feel the fly4 ,eight 444 ,the feeling is very definite4 ,nine 444 ,as ,i flick my hand the fly will disappear 7,if you have felt the fly1 move your hand74 ,ten 444 ,it is gone4 ,test ,no4 #g is known as the cigarette test and naturally is only for those of you who smoke4 ,in this test1 you give yourself posthypnotic suggestions during the hypnotic state1 awaken yourself1 and then note the effects of the posthypnotic suggestions4 ,if the cigarette tastes bitter or has a repugnant taste or odor1 and if you furthermore find it impossible to smoke more than three puffs1 necessitating your putting out the cigarette1 you know the posthypnotic suggestions are working perfectly and that you are an excellent hypnotic subject4 ,here are the suggestions to give yourself while you are under hypnosis3 ,when ,i count to three1 ,i shall open my eyes and wake up feeling wonderfully well and shall have a strong desire to smoke a cigarette4 ,upon lighting the cigarette1 ,i shall notice that there is a very bitter1 strong and repugnant taste to the cigarette4 ,as ,i continue to smoke the cigarette1 the distasteful effect will become stronger and stronger4 ,even though ,i realize that ,i have given myself these posthypnotic suggestions1 they will exert a strong force outside of my conscious control1 and ,i shall find it necessary to extinguish the cigarette after three puffs4 ,as ,i now count to three1 ,i shall open my eyes and wake up feeling fine4 ,one1 two1 three4 ,test ,no4 #h is called the sun test4 ,in this test1 you picture yourself in a bathing suit1 shorts or playsuit at the beach or some other familiar place taking a sunbath4 ,you imagine that it is a beautiful summer day4 ,as you see yourself relaxed1 you imagine that a cloud is blocking out the sun1 but as you count to three1 the cloud will move away and you will feel the warm1 pleasant glow of the sun's rays on your face and hands4 ,here are the suggestions you can use3 ,as ,i count to three1 ,i shall feel the warm1 pleasant rays of the sun on my face and hands4 ,one 444 ,the cloud is moving1 and ,i can begin to feel the warm1 pleasant rays of the sun4 ,two 444 ,the cloud is moving more and more1 exposing more and more of the sun4 ,i can feel the warmth of the sun's rays4 ,three 444 ,the cloud has moved away from the sun1 and ,i can feel the full1 warm strength of the sun4 ,it is a pleasant feeling1 but as ,i continue to count to five1 the warm feeling will dissipate4 ,four 444 ,the warm feeling is leaving4 ,five 444 ,the warm feeling has left1 and ,i feel perfectly normal in every respect4 ,a variation of this test is to see yourself lying comfortably in front of a fireplace4 ,in this instance1 you imagine someone is adding wood to the fire4 ,as this is done1 you feel the warm glow of the fire more and more4 ,should you use the fireplace technique1 try to incorporate the sound of rain into the picture4 ,if you hear rain you have created a positive auditory hallucination and can consider yourself an excellent subject4 ,you can also visualize a situation where you would be cold4 ,this is not as pleasant as the picture that one can conjure up about a fireplace and thus creates a bit more resistance since no one wants to feel uncomfortable4 ,test ,no4 #i is the breeze test4 ,it can be combined with the previous test4 ,after you attain the feeling of warmth1 you give yourself a count of three 7or whatever number you want71 suggesting that you will feel the cool ocean breeze 7if you are at the beach7 on your face and hands4 ,you can even carry this step further1 suggesting that you'll even smell the odor of the salt water4 ,this is known as an olfactory illusion and should you be able to create this effect1 you can be sure that you are a somnambulistic subject4 ,here are suggestions you can use3 ,as ,i count to three1 ,i shall gradually feel the cool ocean breeze coming over the waves4 ,it will be a very pleasant feeling4 ,one 444 ,i am beginning to feel the cool ocean breeze1 especially on my face and hands4 ,two 444 ,the breeze is becoming stronger and stronger4 ,three 444 ,i can definitely feel the cool ocean breeze4 ,as ,i continue to count to five1 ,i shall smell the pleasant1 healthy aroma of the salt water4 ,four 444 ,i am beginning to smell the salt water4 ,five 444 ,i can definitely smell the salt water4 ,now you give yourself appropriate suggestions that the feeling 7illusion7 will vanish as you awaken or at a specific count4 ,it can be as simple as this3 ,as ,i count to three1 ,i shall open my eyes and awaken feeling very refreshed4 ,the feeling of the cool ocean breeze and smell of the salt air will have vanished completely4 ,at this point you count to three and open your eyes4 ,test ,no4 #aj is the handclasp test4 ,this is used frequently to test the depth of hypnosis4 ,you fold your hands with your fingers tightly interlocked and place your palms together4 ,you then give yourself a hypnotic suggestion that at the count of three1 it will be impossible for you to unlock your hands4 ,after you try and are unable to unlock your hands1 you continue counting to five1 suggesting that you will be able to do so when you reach the count of five4 ,incidentally1 you should remove any ring you may be wearing before trying this test4 ,here are the suggestions you can follow3 ,as ,i complete the count of three1 ,i shall try to unlock my hands but will be unable to do so until ,i count to five4 ,one 444 ,my hands are locked tightly together4 ,two 444 ,my fingers are locked tighter and tighter4 ,three 444 ,it is impossible for me to unlock my hands until ,i count to five4 ,four 444 ,as ,i reach the count of five1 ,i shall be able to unlock my hands very easily4 ,five 444 ,i can now unlock my hands very easily4 ,test ,no4 #aa is the arm test4 ,here is another test used frequently to test the receptiveness to hypnosis4 ,make a tight fist and extend your arm in front of you as far as possible4 ,visualize your arm as one solid mass1 as stiff and rigid as a bar of steel4 ,after your arm is extended1 give yourself a hypnotic suggestion that you will be unable to bend your arm when you complete the count of three4 ,as you continue to count to five1 you will be able to bend your arm very easily4 ,here is a form of suggestion you can use3 ,as ,i reach the count of three1 ,i shall try to bend my arm1 but it will be impossible to do so until ,i count to five4 ,no matter how hard ,i try1 it will be absolutely impossible4 ,one 444 ,my arm is stiff and rigid as a bar of steel4 ,two 444 ,i can feel the rigidity in my arm4 ,three 444 ,it is impossible for me to bend my arm until ,i count to five4 ,four 444 ,i can feel the stiffness slowly leaving4 ,five 444 ,i can now bend my arm easily and it feels normal in every respect4 ,test ,no4 #ab is the eye test4 ,this is probably the most widely used test in hypnosis4 ,many subjects equate the inability to open the eyes with hypnosis4 ,many assume that if they can open their eyes1 they have not been hypnotized4 ,i must emphatically point out that this is not true4 ,the subject can fail the eye test and yet have been under hypnosis4 ,in the deep1 somnambulistic state1 the subject can open his eyes without affecting the depth of the hypnotic state4 ,in fact1 this is done many times in getting the subject to do automatic writing1 crystal gazing1 mirror gazing1 hypnodrama and revivification4 ,in carrying out posthypnotic suggestions in any state1 the subject is frequently told that he will open his eyes and carry out the suggestion4 ,i have found that there is more anxiety connected with the eye test than with any other test4 ,i feel that it is a normal reaction and one that must be anticipated by the hypnotist as well as the subject4 ,occasionally1 while hypnotizing a new subject1 he will open his eyes4 ,this can happen when the subject feels he is losing consciousness4 ,his ability to open his eyes proves to him that he is in control4 ,one of the main fears that the subject has is his belief that he will lose voluntary control of himself4 ,the fact that he can open his eyes lessens his anxiety4 ,if there seems to be too much threat to the individual1 ,i use a method that you can follow4 ,instead of suggesting that the subject will be unable to open his eyes at a specific count1 ,i suggest that he will be so relaxed that it will be too much effort to open his eyes until a further count is given4 ,actually1 what could take less effort8 ,here are suggestions you can use3 ,as ,i count to three1 ,i shall try to open my eyes1 but ,i shall be unable to do so because ,i feel so relaxed4 ,it will just take too much effort to open my eyes until ,i reach the count of five or tell myself to awaken4 ,one 444 ,my eyes are closed1 and ,i am in a very deep state of hypnosis4 ,two 444 ,my eyelids are stuck tightly together4 ,three 444 ,it is now impossible for me to open my eyes4 ,i shall be able to open them though at the count of five4 ,four 444 ,i shall be able to open my eyes very easily at the count of five4 ,five 444 ,i can now open my eyes and wake up feeling alert and fully refreshed4 ,in accomplishing the eye test1 you try to create a vivid picture of yourself being completely and fully relaxed4 ,if you really exerted a great deal of effort1 you could open your eyes1 but because of the pleasantness of the completely relaxed state1 you prefer not to do so4 ,it can be likened to your enduring the cold winter air when you are half asleep in bed instead of getting up to close the window which has been left open too much4 ,you can1 of course1 get up and close the window1 but it becomes a matter of expending too much energy4 ,instead1 you choose to endure the discomfort or suggest that your spouse close the window4 ,for the following three tests1 you give yourself the suggestions as outlined in the previous tests4 ,it should be pointed out again that at the conclusion of the test1 you give yourself a suggestion that you will feel normal in every respect4 ,test ,no4 #ac is the music test4 ,this test involves creating an auditory hallucination4 ,give yourself the suggestion that at a specific count you will hear your favorite song4 ,it will last for one minute and then fade out4 ,test ,no4 #ad is the dream test4 ,it is incorporated in a great deal of hypnotherapy4 ,the subject is told that as the hypnotist counts to three1 the subject will have a dream lasting for several minutes which he will remember4 ,this dream1 furthermore1 will call his attention to an important incident that he has long forgotten1 yet which will be relevant to his problem4 ,in self-hypnosis1 you suggest to yourself that at a specific count you will have a very pleasant dream lasting for several minutes1 at the end of which time you will awaken feeling refreshed4 ,for those readers further interested in producing dreams1 ,i can highly recommend a very fascinating book called ,the ,experimental ,production of ,dreams ,during ,hypnosis by ,professor ,david ,ballin ,klein4 ,test ,no4 #ae is the anesthesia test4 ,this is conducted by telling yourself that you will not feel the pain associated with the act of pinching yourself4 ,you suggest that you will feel the pressure of your fingers but will not feel the pain involved4 ,i urge the reader not to stick pins in himself to test the anesthesia4 ,this can be dangerous1 lead to infection and cause other harmful results4 ,you should also not dig your nails into your skin to make sure that you don't feel pain4 ,chapter #aj ,a ,new ,approach to ,self-,hypnosis ,when ,all ,else ,fails ,let us assume that you have tried diligently to learn self-hypnosis for a month or more but have failed4 ,you have worked faithfully following the instructions outlined in this book and other books on self-hypnosis1 but somehow the state of hypnosis eludes you4 ,should you give up in despair1 or is there still hope for you8 ,let me assure you that you can still become an excellent subject4 ,let us examine several areas of this problem and a new approach that will help you achieve your ends4 ,you must1 first of all1 ask yourself if you are feeling better and whether you have made strides in the direction you desire while giving yourself suggestions in whatever stage of hypnosis you have achieved4 ,if your evaluation is affirmative to any degree1 you can expect even greater results4 ,but1 you may say1 how can ,i expect greater results when ,i haven't achieved self-hypnosis8 ,my answer is you may be achieving self-hypnosis and not know it6 ,the change to the self-hypnotic state from the waking state can be imperceptible4 ,many times1 prior to testing subjects under hypnosis1 ,i ask them if they think they are in the hypnotic state4 ,the answer is invariably no4 ,when asking the subjects for a cogent reason for this answer1 they usually exclaim that they are aware of what is going on and do not feel any different than they did before ,i started working with them4 ,they are amazed to find that various tests work so perfectly4 ,some subjects do not respond to hypnotic tests no matter how long you work with them4 ,for these persons1 ,i usually de-emphasize the need for passing the tests and concentrate on the therapeutic results which are desired4 ,this approach lessens anxiety and usually results in a deepening of the hypnotic state4 ,it is my feeling that many subjects resist any tests as the implication is that once the tests work1 the subject is under complete control of the hypnotist4 ,the subject may fear this supposed subjection on one hand and yet want it on the other hand4 ,these forces can work unconsciously1 and thus the attainment of hypnosis becomes a very intricate1 perplexing and trying procedure4 ,even though this may be so1 ,i can assure you that the problem and attainment of hypnosis can be resolved4 ,it is only a matter of motivation on the part of the subject4 ,this is the main ingredient necessary for successful hypnosis4 ,let me now explain a technique which has worked admirably for many who have been frustrated because of their inability to achieve self-hypnosis4 ,it involves pretending you are hypnotized and going through the motions of the various tests as though you were a perfect subject4 ,you will recall that one theory of hypnosis is that the subject behaves in a manner that he believes is in keeping with hypnotic behavior4 ,this role playing is the basis for our unique approach4 ,as the subject continues this procedure1 he takes on the conditioned response mechanism necessary for self-hypnosis4 ,let us look at the following examples of role playing4 ,during the war1 many soldiers who wanted to leave the army would pretend something was wrong with them4 ,they would convince the authorities of the authenticity of their illness1 and since nothing seemed to make them better1 they eventually were separated from the service because of the incapacitating disorder4 ,but what happened to many of these malingerers after they were released from the service8 ,i'm sure you know the rest of the story4 ,the constant malingering was transformed by this role playing into a conditioned response pattern1 eventually bringing about the very undesirable condition responsible for their leaving the service4 ,i saw some of these individuals and more than once they told me that they had unwittingly hypnotized themselves into having the ailment4 ,they wanted me to dehypnotize them4 ,they actually turned out to be very easy subjects as they had become highly suggestible4 ,unfortunately1 their super-ego structure was weak1 they had difficulty in identifying strongly with anyone1 and the relationship in hypnosis was superficial and without depth4 ,i am going to relate another example which ,i hope will help you understand the role-playing technique for self-hypnosis4 ,i have had the following experience many times in giving hypnotic demonstrations before various organizations4 ,for some reason1 even though ,i carefully ask that only those who desire to be hypnotized volunteer as subjects for the hypnotic demonstrations1 an individual who has no intention of cooperating comes up on the stage to poke fun at the hypnotist4 ,in giving public demonstrations1 ,i usually work with about ten subjects and simultaneously give them the same suggestions and posthypnotic suggestions4 ,once the subjects are hypnotized1 ,i work with them with their eyes open4 ,using this technique1 with each subject carrying out a posthypnotic suggestion1 intensifies the responses of other subjects4 ,there is also competitiveness to become the best subject4 ,in the meantime1 the individual who is really not under hypnosis has let the audience know about it by winking or making a grimace when ,i was not looking at him4 ,observing laughter and other audience reactions which are not in keeping with what is happening at the precise moment during my lecture is my cue that ,i have an egocentric person on stage4 ,you might ask1 ,can't you tell when someone is faking8 ,it is extremely difficult many times to do so4 ,once you are aware of it1 however1 you give certain tests to the group4 ,the exhibitionist doesn't know how to respond each time and you soon pick him out4 ,even when ,i know specifically who it is1 ,i do not dismiss him4 ,interestingly1 it is invariably a man4 ,i continue with the lecture-demonstration2 but ,i let the audience know that ,i am aware of the situation4 ,this is the interesting part of this example4 ,the bumptious subject1 by giving himself autosuggestions to comply with various posthypnotic suggestions1 is actually engaging in our technique of role playing4 ,the inevitable happens4 ,he finds himself hypnotized despite his obvious intention not to be affected in any way4 ,any hypnotist can recount similar incidents4 ,what can you learn by the example just presented8 ,what if you purposely set about doing the same thing in your attempt to achieve self-hypnosis8 ,the obvious answer is that the technique has a good chance of working1 and as a result you will achieve self-hypnosis4 ,this method has worked with many recalcitrant subjects4 ,to follow this plan1 go back to chapter six1 ,how ,to ,attain ,self-,hypnosis1 and use the role-playing technique4 ,you'll be pleasantly surprised at how this approach will act as a catalyst4 ,remember1 once you obtain the eye closure1 give yourself whatever therapeutic suggestion you desire plus the posthypnotic suggestion that the next time you will fall into a deeper and sounder state of hypnosis at the count of three or any other cue you desire4 ,i know you may protest using the role-playing technique with the question1 ,if ,i'm not under hypnosis1 why give myself therapeutic posthypnotic suggestions to condition myself to go under hypnosis at a specific count8 ,you may further protest that you are only fooling yourself4 ,my answer is1 ,what if you are8 ,what is lost by doing it8 ,you have everything to gain and nothing to lose4 ,are you not really interested in the end result and not the means8 ,the attainment of the self-hypnotic state is not in itself the end result2 it is a means to help you achieve your goal4 ,don't many people carry or wear good-luck charms of a religious or nonreligious nature8 ,don't we accept these items in our society8 ,the four-leaf clover and rabbit's foot as symbols of good luck have been part of our culture for a long time4 ,we are all sophisticated enough to know that they do not have an intrinsic value1 but don't they do something for our mental attitude8 ,this same pattern is precisely what you are to follow in using the role-playing technique4 ,if you believe1 expect and imagine that you will be successful in this approach to self-hypnosis1 ,i can assure you that you will4 ,may ,i urge you not to reject this novel and unorthodox approach4 ,many have had excellent results when other methods1 even those of a professional hypnotist1 have failed4 ,some of you may recognize this approach as another means of applying the visual-imagery technique4 ,whatever you choose to call it1 ,i reiterate you can expect good results4 ,it is only necessary that you follow the instructions and adopt the right attitude4 ,by the right attitude1 ,i mean that you should adopt the conviction that you are going to achieve self-hypnosis even though you might have experienced difficulty up to now4 ,hypnosis is a conviction phenomenon4 ,it is possible you may say you are not suggestible4 ,actually1 your lack of response proves your suggestibility4 ,you have been influenced by negative suggestions4 ,everyone is suggestible to some degree4 ,you have become extremely suggestible to conscious or unconscious stimuli which are definitely affecting your ability to respond4 ,you need only use this latent suggestibility and make it work for you4 ,what would you say about the suggestibility of a person who doesn't want to talk about hypnosis8 ,this person has never read a book on hypnosis and absolutely doesn't want you or anyone else to hypnotize him4 ,would you believe this person is a potentially good hypnotic subject8 ,i can tell you by practical experience that once this person allows himself to be hypnotized1 he turns out to be a perfect subject4 ,responding to either end of the suggestibility scale is indicative of success with hypnosis4 ,it becomes a matter of manipulating this suggestibility skillfully in order to achieve results4 ,let me give you another example which may help4 ,which one of the two lines drawn on this page is longer8 ,line ,,ab or line ,,cd8 ,illustration ,what is your answer8 ,did you think both were the same8 ,take a ruler and actually measure them4 ,you'll find line ,,ab longer than ,,cd4 ,but1 you reply1 every other time both lines were the same4 ,this is a familiar optical illusion which is used many times in basic courses in psychology4 ,it is known as the ,muller-,lyer illusion4 ,my contention is that if you said1 ,both are the same size1 you are potentially a good subject4 ,you respond perfectly to previous conditioning2 thus1 you are responding as anticipated4 ,if1 on the other hand1 you picked line ,,ab1 you are normally suggestible4 ,if you honestly picked line ,,cd1 you are extremely cautious and respond best to reverse psychology4 ,once again you are highly suggestible1 but toward one extreme4 ,illustration ,illustration ,here's another interesting experiment4 ,would you say that lines ,,ab and ,,cd were perfectly straight8 ,i'll let you figure out what your response means to this test by yourself4 ,you can take a ruler to determine if the lines are straight4 ,we all respond unconsciously to stimuli of some sort4 ,word association tests are based on this principle4 ,aren't your reactions automatic to the following terms3 democratic party1 republican party1 communist party1 mother1 father1 movie star8 ,if ,i mention the name of a famous person1 city or country1 the same immediate unconscious reaction takes place4 ,let's try it4 ,theodore ,roosevelt1 ,harry ,truman1 ,dwight ,d4 ,eisenhower1 ,john ,f4 ,kennedy1 ,albert ,einstein1 ,albert ,schweitzer1 ,eleanor ,roosevelt1 ,boston1 ,new ,york ,city1 ,hollywood1 ,miami ,beach1 ,united ,states1 ,england1 ,france1 ,italy1 ,israel1 ,africa1 ,russia1 ,china1 ,india and ,south ,america4 ,the response and image keep changing1 don't they8 ,i am trying to point out that this reaction is automatic because of previous conditioning4 ,i could mention almost anything and the same automatic reaction would take place4 ,the reaction would always be the same unless something had happened to change or alter your response4 ,let us mention the word hypnosis4 ,some sort of reaction must take place4 ,this can either be positive1 negative1 or neutral for our purposes4 ,you really don't have to think about your response as it is automatic4 ,the point to remember is that a definite response has taken place which will either help or hinder your attainment of hypnosis4 ,if the response should be negative1 it can be changed by gaining knowledge and actual experience in hypnosis4 ,it is natural to have a bit of uneasiness when first experiencing or thinking about being hypnotized4 ,after all1 you haven't been exposed to hypnosis in a therapeutic setting and couldn't have formed a favorable reaction4 ,your response is probably derived from a fictionization of hypnosis4 ,the initial task of the hypnotist is to create1 by educating the prospective subject1 a favorable attitude so that the subject allows himself to be hypnotized4 ,what does this mean specifically to you if you are having difficulty learning self-hypnosis8 ,it means that through repeated exposures1 you will finally respond4 ,you will realize there is no need for anxiety in regard to your response4 ,this inner feeling will1 in turn1 have a cumulative1 favorable effect upon your unconscious which will result in your finally responding to hypnosis4 ,suppose you still maintain and insist that you are not suggestible and wonder if you will ever respond to hypnosis4 ,furthermore1 the assurance ,i have given you up to this point doesn't seem to convince you4 ,if you have tried diligently to achieve self-hypnosis1 you cannot be blamed1 but let's try an experiment to test your suggestibility4 ,it is well to ponder my statement that if you do not respond1 it is a sign of being suggestible1 but in a negative sense4 ,lack of response is a manifestation of this negative suggestibility4 ,my contention is that you are definitely suggestible4 ,let us see what happens to you in trying the following classical experiment4 ,it is called the ,chevreul's ,pendulum test4 ,draw a circle with about a six-inch diameter and mark it as shown in the illustration4 ,illustration ,next1 take a ring and attach a string to it4 ,if you have a locket1 it will do as well4 ,the hypnotist uses a crystal ball and chain for this experiment4 ,hold the end of the string or chain and keep the ring or whatever object you are using about three inches above the center of the circle4 ,now1 concentrate and fix your gaze on the ring1 crystal ball1 or locket4 ,mentally suggest to yourself that the object will begin to revolve in a circular manner following the numbers #a1 #b1 #c1 and #d4 ,picture in your mind's eye that this circular motion is becoming wider and wider4 ,work at this image for several minutes4 ,did the object begin turning to the right following the numbers8 ,did the circle become larger and larger8 ,if it did1 you are absolutely suggestible1 are influenced by your own suggestions and1 therefore1 if you follow instructions1 can learn self-hypnosis4 ,you can be trained to acquire this skill4 ,if the experience did not work1 try it again4 ,concentrate harder and try to visualize more intently the object revolving in a circular manner4 ,you are not to rotate the object consciously or help it in any way4 ,the action must stem from your subconscious4 ,the thought of the crystal ball or ring revolving in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction invariably causes an involuntary muscular reflex action to take place4 ,this phenomenon is known as an ideomotor action4 ,usually1 as the subject concentrates more intensely1 the reflex action becomes more profound1 causing greater unconscious movement of the hand which1 in turn1 is transmitted to the object in the form of larger circles and greater momentum4 ,the time required for the successful accomplishment of this test depends upon the degree of suggestibility of the subject4 ,an interesting action is to see the object revolve in an opposite direction than suggested4 ,it gives a clue to the personality structure of the individual4 ,the ,ouija board works on the same principle as the ,chevreul's ,pendulum test4 ,many times the aspirant will remark1 ,i swear ,i didn't make it move6 ,mentalists find hidden objects in an audience using basically the same approach1 combined with clever techniques of distraction4 ,the term given for this is muscle reading4 ,this is the point in question4 ,if the crystal ball1 ring or locket moves without conscious direction1 you have successfully influenced your subconscious mind4 ,self-hypnosis involves the same procedure4 ,the goal is to consciously cause a subconscious reaction4 ,if the experiment does not work with your eyes open1 try it with your eyes closed for about five minutes4 ,you will be pleasantly surprised with the results4 ,should you want to prove to yourself that you are suggestible with your eyes open1 practice the technique every day for a week or two4 ,the idea of the practice sessions is to reinforce and increase the response of the unconscious movement until you develop proficiency4 ,it follows the laws of the conditioned reflex theory expounded by ,dr4 ,ivan ,p4 ,pavlov 7#ahdi-aicf71 the famous ,russian psychologist4 ,if1 after several weeks1 you should still not be successful1 use the role-playing technique4 ,consciously make the object revolve4 ,after a while1 it will move automatically whenever you attempt the experiment4 ,when this happens you will have proof of your suggestibility4 ,it is highly improbable that you will not be successful4 ,it would be a rare occurrence4 ,by the same systematic efforts1 ,i can assure you that you can achieve self-hypnosis4 ,if you are still not affected favorably1 you might consider one of the psychological means of inducing hypnosis4 ,the next chapter will discuss this topic4 ,i would recommend ,pavlov's book called ,conditioned ,reflexes4 ,pavlov's book will further explain and clarify the concept of the conditioned response mechanism4 ,it covers necessary conditions for the development of conditioned responses1 their formation by means of conditioned and direct stimuli1 plus a tremendous amount of material which will help you in your understanding of the significance of the role-playing technique in relationship to learning self-hypnosis4 ,chapter #aa ,psychological ,aids and ,their ,function ,psychological or mechanical aids are used to help put the subject in a state of hypnosis4 ,the use of the aids helps increase the suggestibility of the subject toward hypnosis4 ,the two most widely used hypnotic aids are the crystal ball and chain and the #ab-;inch hypnodisc4 ,one reason is that these two items have no other use or function outside of the area of hypnosis4 ,therefore1 when the hypnotist proceeds to use one of these hypnotic devices1 it must follow that a certain mental set1 readiness1 or receptivity must follow as a result of its introduction into the hypnotic setting4 ,if the subject is uneasy about the hypnotic setting or his response1 the introduction of the hypnotic aid can mobilize the subject's defenses which may be on a conscious or unconscious level4 ,generally1 the mental set which follows helps augment whatever hypnotic suggestions are given4 ,certainly the same mental set would not follow if the hypnotist used a paper clip as a means of helping with the induction of hypnosis4 ,it would only start the subject wondering about the relationship of the paper clip to hypnosis4 ,it obviously isn't in keeping with what the subject expects4 ,it is important to utilize the subject's expectation as to what he believes takes place in the setting as long as this expectation does not hinder the induction of hypnosis4 ,the mere act of turning down the lights or drawing the curtains before the hypnotist begins to work with the subject is a non-verbal suggestion which can be considered as a psychological aid4 ,the subject knows that the hypnotist is ready to begin at this point4 ,actually1 it isn't necessary to darken the room at any time to induce hypnosis4 ,doesn't the stage hypnotist work with glaring lights8 ,the room is darkened 7and ,i might add that ,i use this procedure myself7 mainly for the psychological effect4 ,if ,i feel that this procedure might cause anxiety1 ,i proceed with the room undarkened4 ,in discussing psychological aids1 it is agreed that we are primarily interested in seeing the subject feel better or achieve whatever goals he seeks through the intelligent application of self-hypnosis4 ,if a hypnotic aid will help the subject achieve hypnosis1 we can concur it is justified4 ,it is not to be considered a subterfuge4 ,if the physician administers a placebo to a patient with the remark1 ,here is a new medication that can help your condition and if this technique does help alleviate the patient's condition1 it is considered good medicine4 ,you know beforehand that in using the #ab-;inch hypnodisc1 the subject's eyes must begin to water1 his eyelids must get heavy1 and eventually he must close them4 ,even before you begin to use the hypnodisc1 you suggest that these conditions will take place4 ,during the induction of hypnosis1 as these reactions are noted by the subject1 a favorable1 psychological attitude automatically develops which1 in turn1 helps further suggestions4 ,if the subject reacts favorably to suggestions ,a1 ,b1 and ,c1 it follows that he is more prone to accept suggestions ,d1 ,e1 and ,f which are therapeutic in nature4 ,the subject can relate better to the latter suggestions when he has seen proof of his initial suggestibility4 ,this approach works better than beginning immediately with the latter suggestions4 ,the build-up of suggestions convinces the subject he is in a heightened state of suggestibility and can benefit from the therapeutic suggestions of the hypnotist or his own4 ,perhaps this needed assurance is so helpful because it eliminates the anxiety of the subject concerning his suggestibility4 ,he seeks and needs the satisfaction of knowing he has attained the prerequisites necessary before any therapeutic program can benefit him4 ,the subject's prerequisites need not be actually related to the hypnotic process1 per se1 but merely match his preconceived ideas about what is necessary4 ,let me give you an example4 ,many subjects feel that they must experience amnesia before they can benefit from hypnotic suggestions4 ,this premise is inaccurate since favorable and lasting results can be achieved in any degree of hypnosis1 depending1 of course1 on the nature of the problem4 ,let me relate several interesting occurrences that take place every so often in my own practice as a professional hypnotist4 ,a subject who is responding well to hypnosis1 but not to the point of amnesia1 insists that he will not benefit until he is knocked out and doesn't remember what happened4 ,trying to convince him otherwise proves fatal4 ,he just refuses to accept whatever explanation you give him4 ,my own method is not to insist that the subject is wrong1 but somehow to use his misconception in a constructive manner4 ,after getting him into a cataleptic state1 ,i suggest that ,i am going to stop talking for five minutes1 during which time he is to mentally repeat sleep as he slowly and deeply inhales and deep sleep as he slowly exhales4 ,at the end of this time1 he'll be in a very deep hypnotic state4 ,instead of remaining quiet for five minutes1 ,i take ten minutes4 ,i then begin to whisper suggestions to the subject to determine if he is still under hypnosis or asleep4 ,if he is asleep1 ,i let him remain asleep for a still longer period of time1 after which interval ,i awaken him4 ,i ask him if he remembers what ,i said to him during the time he was deeply hypnotized4 ,if he says1 ,no1 ,i remark1 ,very good4 ,i further point out to him that he has now experienced amnesia and will now make rapid strides4 ,the subject1 on the other hand1 is pleased to see that ,i now agree with him1 and1 in fact1 the interesting result is that he does make excellent progress because his preconceived requirements have been met4 ,it should be pointed out that ,i keep working with the subject until such time that he falls asleep4 ,the transition from hypnosis to sleep is normal4 ,it is easy for the subject to fall asleep because he is so relaxed4 ,let me tell you of a similar experience4 ,before telling you of this psychological technique1 it is only fair to point out that the professional hypnotist varies his approach from subject to subject1 not only to suit the needs of the subject but to break the monotony of using only a few successful procedures4 ,his experimentation helps develop not only new procedures1 but new concepts relative to the general nature of hypnosis and its many ramifications4 ,i was interested to see what would happen to a subject if he thought he was deeply hypnotized without ever giving him verbal suggestions or reassurance that he would feel better or overcome his problem4 ,of course1 if the technique did not work quickly1 ,i would drop the procedure for a more orthodox approach4 ,instead of trying to really hypnotize the subject1 my aim is to get him to sleep4 ,once he is asleep1 ,i let him remain so for about #cj minutes4 ,without having ever given him a therapeutic suggestion1 ,i awaken him and inquire if he remembered what happened4 ,if the answer is1 ,no1 ,i tell him ,i'll hypnotize him again next week and this concludes the visit4 ,when he returns next week1 ,i ask him1 ,how did you feel during the week8 ,the answer is generally1 ,much better4 ,i keep repeating this procedure until such time that the individual has attained the goals that he seeks4 ,i know that the reader may be surprised that ,i would divulge such an unconventional procedure4 ,the principle is the same as the physician using a placebo4 ,i do so to illustrate the point that ,i made earlier in this chapter that so long as certain of the subject's requirements are met1 whether valid or invalid1 the subject's suggestibility is greatly enhanced4 ,naturally1 the unsuspecting subject equated the period of not remembering1 which was1 as we know1 true sleep1 with the somnambulistic state4 ,actually1 he was helped by self-hypnosis because he felt he would now make progress because he proved to be such an excellent subject4 ,it is true1 he was not using self-hypnosis as has been outlined in this book1 but he had now achieved a heightened state of suggestibility 7hypnosis7 and was using this state to further his own ends4 ,the attainment of self-hypnosis can be an intricate and elusive procedure as ,i have already pointed out4 ,the purpose of the entire book is to instruct1 point out and give you the necessary understanding and knowledge required to achieve this end4 ,without this understanding1 this can become a very frustrating effort4 ,it is hoped that by understanding and being aware of some of the ramifications of hypnosis1 you will be able to achieve your goal in the quickest possible time4 ,it should also be pointed out that no two subjects react in the same way and that different methods and requirements are necessary to suit the individual4 ,it is a mistake to try to make the subject adhere to a rigid methodology4 ,the greater flexibility of the hypnotic procedures1 the greater the chance for success4 ,let me1 at this time1 further discuss some of the hypnotic aids that are used in the induction of hypnosis4 ,we have already discussed the use of the hypnodisc and crystal ball and chain4 ,the same principles are involved in any other object which is used as a means of fixation or of tiring the eyes4 ,hypnotic phonograph records and hypnotic tape recordings represent new devices that have been instrumental in conditioning subjects for self-hypnosis4 ,the subject plays the record or tape on his phonograph or tape recorder and is conditioned over a period of time to respond to hypnosis at a given signal or phrase4 ,he1 in turn1 can change this key phrase to one of his own choosing4 ,should you own or have access to a tape recorder1 ,i would suggest recording an induction of hypnosis and playing it back to yourself in this manner as though you were hypnotizing someone else4 ,i have produced three different hypnotic records and a #cj-minute hypnotic tape containing the three records which are sold commercially4 ,one record1 called the ,musical ,hypnotic ,record1 has a very pleasant1 relaxing musical background as the voice of the hypnotist induces hypnosis4 ,the second record1 called the ,metronome ,hypnotic ,record1 incorporates the monotonous and lulling beat of an electric metronome in the background4 ,the subject is instructed to mentally repeat sleep as he slowly inhales and deep sleep as he slowly exhales in rhythm with the beat of the metronome4 ,while the subject is concentrating on this activity1 the voice of the hypnotist induces hypnosis4 ,the third record1 called ,self-,hypnosis ,record ,no4 #c1 contains only the voice of the hypnotist inducing hypnosis4 ,it features a unique approach and technique4 ,i have had a great deal of correspondence with those who have used these phonograph records and the hypnotic tape for conditioning themselves for self-hypnosis4 ,the results are quite interesting and run the range of immediate results to no results4 ,one person wrote that one of the records hypnotized him at the first playing and conditioned him for self-hypnosis1 whereas he had failed to respond to hypnosis after many visits to one of the country's foremost authorities4 ,i have had similar experiences after having failed to hypnotize a subject despite many attempts4 ,i can only speculate that the subjects in these cases unconsciously resist the hypnotist because they feel a personal threat4 ,since the record is impersonal1 they are better able to relax and subsequently be hypnotized4 ,interestingly1 this occurred when the subject was convinced that he was a very difficult subject4 ,it would seem that only then was the conditioned response pattern finally established4 ,the basic function of the hypnotic records and hypnotic tape is to establish a conditioned response pattern to a given stimulus4 ,in time1 most subjects are conditioned by the intelligent and systematic use of these recordings4 ,let me describe another varied approach to achieving self-hypnosis4 ,one of the chief assets of a good hypnotist is to be flexible in his approach in hypnotizing his subjects4 ,as ,i have already pointed out1 it is necessary many times to adopt a technique that is suitable to the subject and not to make the subject adapt himself to the method of induction4 ,we know that with somnambulistic subjects any procedure will put the subject under hypnosis immediately4 ,the hypnotist gains complete control of his subject as the subject is able to put himself in the proper psychological frame of mind for hypnosis4 ,unfortunately1 most subjects do not respond at the first session or sessions because of conscious or subconscious fears that must be gradually eliminated4 ,once you get the subject to relax1 or let go1 he will naturally succumb to hypnosis4 ,this is the problem that confronts all hypnotists4 ,merely suggesting to the subject to relax is not sufficient1 as a rule1 to bring about this desired mental state4 ,the subject1 at this point1 cannot easily turn on or off his mental and physical feelings4 ,even if we have the subject lie down1 this does not assure the hypnotic state as the subject can still be tense4 ,our main problem is to get the subject relaxed4 ,our situation is similar to the physician telling his patient to go home and forget about a certain problem4 ,i'm sure you'll agree that the advice is virtually impossible to follow4 ,one of the major stumbling blocks in hypnotizing a subject or in self-hypnosis lies in the fact that although we use terms such as relax1 let yourself go1 and others1 the subject cannot readily put the meaning of these words into effect4 ,it is difficult for most people to let go when we live in a society that beckons us to look sharp1 be sharp1 be alert1 be on the ball and make every minute count4 ,emphasis on productivity does not lend to a society of relaxed individuals4 ,in my long experience as a professional hypnotist1 ,i have tried many novel innovations for inducing hypnosis and teaching individuals self-hypnosis4 ,some have met with a great deal of success and others have failed4 ,it is1 furthermore1 difficult to determine the causal factors for success or failure4 ,we can only theorize4 ,i have used the following unorthodox technique for about a period of #ae years4 ,exceptionally good results have been attained with it1 although it must be admitted that it is not infallible4 ,it is suggested to you as another good technique4 ,in order to help the subject relax1 ,i have been using a phonograph record or tape that ,i recorded containing the continuous sound of various degrees of rain4 ,one side has a half hour of very soft1 light rainfall such as you have experienced in listening to rain falling on grass1 canvas or a tent top4 ,the other side or track contains a half hour of rain effects such as one would hear in a heavy downfall with loud splatterings of water on the pavement4 ,the record and tape were originally designed to help insomnia sufferers and later incorporated into the hypnotic procedure4 ,the subject is instructed to close his eyes and listen to the sound of the rain while picturing himself relaxing near a warm1 glowing fireplace4 ,as you can note1 the subject again incorporates the visual-imagery technique4 ,the relaxing effect thus produced over a period of time enhances his chances of success in attaining a deep1 hypnotic state4 ,there are many other interesting and unique devices and aids you can use for inducing hypnosis4 ,rather than present them all in this book1 ,i have fully described them and their technique of operation in a #add-page illustrated catalog4 ,this catalog not only contains a list of hypnotic aids1 but a description and listing of over #dej hypnotism and self-help books4 ,upon request1 ,i shall be pleased to send it to you4 ,write to3 ,melvin ,powers1 #abjae ,sherman ,road1 ,no4 ,hollywood1 ,california #iafje and ask for ,hypnotic ,catalog ,no4 #g4 ,should you have any questions on self-hypnosis or hetero-hypnosis1 ,i shall be pleased to answer you4 ,chapter #ab ,the ,nature of ,hypnosis ,although the nature and phenomena of hypnosis are still incompletely understood1 there are a multitude of theories which attempt to explain its mechanism and results4 ,the most that can be done at this time is to explore various views which are held by leading authorities at present4 ,it can be said1 however1 that a majority of authorities agree that hypnosis ensues as a result of natural laws which have been incorporated in the human organism since the beginning of man as he is today4 ,the older theories show almost as much disparity as today1 but for the purposes of history it is probably necessary to enumerate only the animal magnetism of ,frederick ,anton ,mesmer1 and a mention of the hysteria syndrome of ,jean ,martin ,charcot4 ,both names loom large in the history of hypnosis4 ,mesmer1 an #ahth century physician1 believed that hypnosis occurred as a result of vital fluids drawn from a magnet or lodestone and which drew their unique qualities from the sun1 moon and stars4 ,charcot1 as well as ,pierre ,janet and others1 was convinced that hypnosis was a form of hysteria and that only hysterics could be hypnotized4 ,the former 7,mesmer7 thought further that metal became imbued by the solar qualities1 and his system is also known as metalogy by which he meant the proper application of metals4 ,naturally1 these theories have been largely abandoned today1 although there are still a few who think that hypnosis is a form of hysteria4 ,some pioneers1 notably ,dr4 ,william ,s4 ,kroger1 a psychiatrically-oriented obstetrician and gynecologist who limits his practice to hypnotherapy1 believe hypnosis is a conviction phenomenon which produces results that parallel the phenomena produced at ,lourdes and other religious healing shrines4 ,his formula is that faith1 hope1 belief and expectation1 all catalyzed by the imagination1 lead inevitably to hypnosis4 ,he1 like ,emile ,cou before him1 is convinced that you cannot will yourself to be hypnotized1 and that whenever the will and the imagination come into conflict1 the imagination wins out4 ,this fits in perfectly1 of course1 with the author's already discussed visual-imagery technique which requires a high degree of imagination4 ,dr4 ,kroger1 like a few others1 has proved to his own satisfaction that all hypnotic phenomena can be produced at a non-hypnotic level4 ,a large number of hypnotists1 including the author1 has come to believe that hypnosis is a semantic problem in which words are the building blocks to success4 ,not just any words1 but words which ring a bell or tap the experiential background of the subject4 ,this is why sleep continues to be in the lexicon of the hypnotist even though hypnosis is the antithesis of sleep4 ,the word is used because hypnosis superficially resembles sleep inasmuch as the eyes usually are closed1 the body in a posture of complete relaxation4 ,actually1 the mind is hyperacute4 ,pavlov1 however1 believed that there was an analogy between sleep and hypnosis in that each involved cerebral inhibition4 ,words1 of course1 would be of little use without the added effect of his conditioned reflexology4 ,probably the most widely held theory is that hypnosis is a transference phenomenon in which the prestige of the hypnotist and his relationship to the subject plays an important role4 ,this theory is bolstered by the fact that all schools of psychotherapy yield approximately the same results even though the methods differ4 ,this would logically indicate that the relationship between the therapist and the subject was the determining factor4 ,the only trouble with this theory is that it does not explain self-hypnosis4 ,on the other hand1 we know that a strong interpersonal relationship is necessary for hypnosis4 ,in the opening chapter of the book1 ,i explained that hypnosis was a state of heightened suggestion in which the subject adopted an uncritical attitude1 allowing him to accept suggestions and to take appropriate action4 ,this is excellent as far as it goes1 but it does not explain how suggestion works4 ,this is the crux of the hypnotic dilemma and the answer is far from solved4 ,hypnotists are much like those who use electricity every day of their lives1 but have no idea of the nature of electricity4 ,it is enough for them to know it has been harnessed for their use4 ,if there is one thing virtually certain about hypnosis it is that some parts of the brain are inhibited and other parts expanded by the process4 ,pin-point concentration is given as the reason for this selective procedure which narrows the horizon of the subject to what the hypnotist 7or he1 himself7 is saying1 screening out all other stimuli4 ,but why is this high order of concentration so easy under hypnosis when ,asians1 notably the ,chinese1 have been trying for centuries to concentrate on one subject for as long as four or five seconds4 ,we do not know the mechanics of this metamorphosis of an ordinary brain into an organ of concentrated power4 ,according to ,janet1 this is accomplished through the formation of a group of unconscious memories and activities which takes over the usual stream-of-consciousness type of thinking4 ,it is implied that the process may be atavistic4 ,one of the newer theories--one held by ,dr4 ,lewis ,r4 ,wolberg1 a psychoanalyst--is that hypnosis is a psychosomatic process in that it is both physiological and psychological in character4 ,physiologically1 ,wolberg believes that hypnosis represents an inhibition of the higher cortical centers1 and a limitation of sensory channels such as takes place in sleep4 ,he also believes that the psychological process operates through transference4 ,others agree that it is a transference process1 but that it is more of an extension of the subject's own psychic processes which is enlarged to include the voice of the hypnotist or his own thoughts or voice4 ,incidentally1 an excellent book along these theoretical lines is ,hypnotism--,an ,objective ,study in ,suggestibility by ,andr ,m4 ,weitzenhoffer1 ,ph4,d4 ,the newest theory in the field is of particular interest to those reading this book inasmuch as it postulates that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis1 that the patient always hypnotizes himself and that it is a wise hypnotist who knows who is hypnotizing whom4 ,this is a logical conclusion and it disperses any ideas that hypnotic patients become dependent on their therapists4 ,actually1 hypnotists today always teach their subjects self-hypnosis so that any chance of dependency is obviated4 ,milton ,v4 ,kline1 professor of psychology at ,long ,island ,university1 postulates that hypnosis is primarily retrogressive4 ,he has written that the organism functions differently on various levels of behavior 7regression71 and that the behavior breaks down into component parts4 ,the theory that regression can spotlight personality disorders found in more infantile states is also widely held4 ,he also is a proponent of the idea that hypnosis is an abnormal manifestation of a normal process1 an opinion he shares with many4 ,dr4 ,kline thinks that retrogression and regression alter perceptions and feelings1 and1 in the case of the latter1 causes us to go backward in time to the point where re-education may be employed4 ,this is a legitimate use of regression although it is not used so much these days to uncover past traumatic incidents4 ,actually1 regression1 by duplicating the exact earlier age1 manner of speech and thought1 etc41 makes us once more as little children1 a condition to be desired for certain forms of therapy4 ,an atavistic theory1 held to some extent by ,dr4 ,jerome ,m4 ,schneck1 clinical associate professor of psychiatry1 ,state ,university of ,new ,york ,college of ,medicine1 is that hypnosis should be equated with states of immobilization on the basis of his observation that some subjects equate hypnosis with death4 ,he suggests this is comparable to the death-feint of animals to avoid danger4 ,others1 primarily ,europeans1 have pointed out the analogy between the hypnotic state of animals and man4 ,another widely-held theory is that hypnosis is a state of dissociation1 meaning that it constitutes a group of unconscious memories and activities which may be dredged up to replace the stream of consciousness4 ,automaticism1 of course1 is inherently part of this view1 and is presumed to negate volition4 ,activity of the cerebrum1 which controls the conscious and voluntary system1 is rendered non-operational4 ,my own thoughts on the matter are that hypnosis results from1 first of all1 a good transference2 secondly1 from a conditioned reflex2 thirdly1 from the person acting as a hypnotized person 7role playing71 and1 fourthly1 from a suspension of the critical faculties4 ,along the last-named line1 ,i believe that hypnotic suggestions have an autonomy of their own which supersede all else in the hypnotic situation4 ,there are many more theories ,i believe are partially correct1 but the ones named will do for the purposes of this volume4 ,incidentally1 all the hypnosis theories presented are equally applicable to self-hypnosis except where1 as in transference1 it is obvious a therapist is needed4 ,in conclusion1 the author would like to take issue with those who believe that it is the monotonous intonations of the therapist that cause the subject to lapse from the deeply relaxed state into true sleep4 ,i have observed many times1 by comparing verbalization with silence1 that the former gives the subject's mind a focal point of attention which prevents him from entering a sleep state where hypnotherapy is impossible4 ,like the man who cannot sleep because of an active mind1 sleep and myriad thoughts and suggestions are incompatible1 and ,i believe1 once a hypnotic state has been attained1 that the subject is kept awake 7unless definite sleep suggestions are given7 by the therapist's series of suggestions4 ,we have discussed the effect of the experiential background at length1 and surely nothing connotates sleep more than closing one's eyes--test ,no4 #a4 ,and so1 in my view1 you are doing two things when you talk to the subject2 you are giving him helpful suggestions1 but you are also keeping him awake and hyperacute so that these suggestions will sink in4 ,chapter #ac ,practical ,applications of ,self-,hypnosis ,with hypnosis on the march1 there is practically no limit to its uses in the field of medicine1 and new applications are being discovered every day4 ,it should not be necessary to add1 however1 that some of these uses should remain as they are--in the hands of professionals with years of experience in the area4 ,one of the themes of this book has been that laymen should use hypnosis discriminately and intelligently4 ,no responsible therapist would ever recommend masking or removing a symptom which was indicative of organic disease4 ,for that reason1 the practical uses of self-hypnosis will be limited to measures that can be taken safely by the layman4 ,the only possible exception to this will be instructions on how to curb obesity1 but even here it is suggested that a physician be consulted before embarking on a weight-reducing program4 ,the foremost use of hypnosis has been for relaxation1 and it becomes more and more important as world tensions1 anxiety and strain increase daily and millions seek vainly to get away from it all4 ,inasmuch as all methods of hypnosis discussed in this book utilized relaxation as the first step1 it should not be necessary to go over this material4 ,simply review the many induction techniques4 ,lung cancer has become a very real threat to many people today1 and the professional hypnotist is besieged with men and women who wish to curtail or quit smoking4 ,this is easier said than done because smoking1 although there are no physical withdrawal symptoms when one stops1 is a strong1 conditioned reflex and cannot 7except in rare instances7 be accomplished by the will alone4 ,the best way to stop smoking is to make it an impossibility1 and that is exactly what you do when you follow the method touched on in an earlier chapter4 ,all of us have tasted or smelled certain foods or medicines that nauseate us4 ,the subject who wishes to quit smoking is asked to conjure up the vision and the actual taste and smell of the substances which upset his stomach and offend his nostrils1 transferring its properties to cigarettes4 ,this1 of course1 must be done under hypnosis4 ,the subject then conditions himself in the following manner3 ,one 444 ,this cigarette tastes and smells just like 7mention name of repugnant substance74 ,two 444 ,it is the most vile and repugnant taste ,i have ever encountered1 and ,i shall not be able to continue after the third puff4 ,at the third puff1 ,i will develop a paroxysm of coughing4 ,three 444 ,i cannot smoke the cigarette any longer1 and ,i will have to put it out4 ,this sounds like a simple procedure1 and yet it has worked for thousands4 ,some switch to chewing gum or candy1 but the cure essentially lies in substituting one conditioned reflex for another4 ,this is comparatively easy with hypnosis because1 unlike narcotics1 barbiturates or alcohol1 smoking is purely a psychological addiction4 ,there is no need for tapering off4 ,stopping drinking1 unlike smoking1 doesn't involve merely the creation of a physical aversion to the drug4 ,the patient's entire personality should be changed and more mature viewpoints substituted for the unrealistic and infantile viewpoints which lead to the addiction in the first place4 ,the subject should give himself suggestions that he will be able to face up to the problems of every day life without recourse to the crutch of alcohol4 ,it is a well-known fact that nothing is as bad as we think it is going to be once we confront it4 ,one of the strange aspects of drinking is that it is actually a form of self-hypnosis1 and the cure lies in substituting a new viewpoint for the old4 ,this fact can be demonstrated by the fact that drinking is begun in the first place so that the individual can be one of the boys or because it is the thing to do4 ,those who do not drink1 at least as a social lubricant1 according to this code1 are squares4 ,because of this1 self-hypnosis must be directed toward reorienting one's sense of values4 ,sober reflection should convince anyone that the truly intelligent person does not drink to excess4 ,nail biting is an unsightly habit1 one that may even hinder one's social acceptance4 ,the help lies in a therapeutic approach similar to that for cigarettes4 ,it is not hard to predict that many of those reading these pages are suffering from overweight4 ,with #cj million ,americans in this category1 it has become one of the nation's chief health problems1 and it is the predisposing factor in many other diseases such as heart trouble1 diabetes1 hypertension and atherosclerosis4 ,if you are overweight1 it is well to remember that 7unless you are one in a million7 you cannot blame your glands4 ,the plain truth is that you eat too much4 ,we know today that overeating for some is an emotional problem1 stemming from feelings of rejection and insecurity4 ,individuals who feel unloved1 whether this is truly the case or not1 make up for this lack to themselves by stuffing in large quantities of food4 ,it would even appear that these people are masochistic1 making themselves even more unloved by their gross gastronomical habits4 ,a big factor in overweight in women is raiding the refrigerator while doing their housework4 ,most of them do this so unconsciously that they swear they eat less than most people4 ,there are a number of appetite-curbing drugs on the market today1 but they should not be necessary for anyone who has acquired self-hypnosis4 ,if you have learned to visualize yourself 7visual-imagery7 in different situations1 you will have no trouble in picturing yourself having a slim1 attractive figure1 exactly as you were when you felt you looked your best4 ,keep this figure ever in mind and use it along with conditioning yourself against certain fatty and starchy foods4 ,a trick used by some hypnotherapists is to have the subject purchase a dress or suit several sizes too small and then work toward being able to wear it4 ,this actually has worked in many cases because it adds the element of competitiveness to the procedure4 ,not all people overeat because of emotional problems4 ,some come from families where licking the platter clean was the rule because food was scarce4 ,others come from rich families where overeating by the parents established a habit pattern in the children4 ,certain races and nationalities look on fat as a badge of wealth and prestige1 and children in such an environment are likely to be deliberately overfed4 ,regardless of the reason for overweight1 however1 the use of self-hypnosis is one of the answers to the problem4 ,simple headaches1 arthritis1 neuritis and other painful symptoms yield readily to hypnotic suggestion4 ,if physicians have given up on the problem and placed a subject on a maintenance drug dosage for pain1 hypnosis can potentiate the drugs or even obviate them4 ,two of the major uses of hypnosis are in childbirth and for intractable pain of cancer or some other incurable diseases4 ,although patients usually start with hetero-hypnosis1 they are put on self-hypnosis as soon as possible1 and there are many cases of women waiting too long and having their babies at home painlessly through self-hypnosis4 ,the father invariably is the only one excited in such cases4 ,the mother knows that she is an excellent subject and has been instructed in prenatal classes about every contingency that could arise4 ,inasmuch as stopping the birth pangs is similar to stopping other pain1 the method should be learned so that it can be accomplished in a minimum of time4 ,the best way to stop pain is to let your right arm slowly rise while you are under hypnotic suggestion4 ,do not help it4 ,if the suggestions are strong enough1 it will float up4 ,as soon as the arm is straight overhead1 you should give yourself the suggestion that it is as rigid and unbending as a bar of steel4 ,following this1 a suggestion is given that the hand is beginning to tingle and become numb4 ,as soon as the numbness has spread through the entire hand1 it will be insensible to pain4 ,the hand is then placed against the part of the body where pain exists1 and you will feel the numbness flowing from the hand to the affected area4 ,this happens as a result of your suggestions and is the method followed by most subjects4 ,only a deep somnambulistic subject is able to remove pain by direct suggestion to the painful part4 ,there are many people today using self-hypnosis in the realm of sports1 and an entire book has been written on improving one's golf game with this method4 ,it is called ,how ,you ,can ,play ,better ,golf ,using ,self-,hypnosis by ,jack ,heise 7,wilshire ,book ,company--,publishers74 ,dr4 ,huber ,grimm1 team physician of the ,seattle ,university basketball team1 recently related the results when ,dave ,mills1 a six-foot five-inch junior forward1 asked for his help because he froze during competition4 ,he had been benched on the eve of the ,west ,coast ,athletic ,conference tournament in ,san ,francisco4 ,spectators made ,mills so fearful that he was afraid he would make mistakes--and in this frame of mind1 of course1 he did4 ,under hypnosis1 ,dr4 ,grimm suggested to ,dave that he would be unaware of the spectators1 be completely relaxed and would play exceedingly well4 ,dr4 ,grimm asked coach ,vince ,cazzeta to allow ,dave to play and the result was astounding4 ,mills scored #fj points and cleared #fc re-bounds1 and his brilliant play led to his selection on the all-tournament team4 ,all ,i did was free his spirit1 ,dr4 ,grimm reported4 ,he was in need of confidence1 and ,i gave it to him through hypnosis4 ,the ,associated ,press told the story as follows3 ,dave ,mills1 a vacuum cleaner off the back-boards1 led a fast-breaking ,seattle ,university team to victory last night4 ,it was hard to recognize ,mills as the same player who has been with the ,chieftains all year4 ,dr4 ,william ,s4 ,kroger1 a pioneer in hypnosis1 undertook to improve the batting of a professional baseball player with equally sensational results4 ,the player had been beaned1 and his fear of a recurrence was so strong that he became plate shy4 ,he had changed his batting stance so that he always had one foot in the bucket so that he could back away from the plate more quickly4 ,he was given a posthypnotic suggestion that such an event happening again was exceedingly remote1 and this was amplified by suggestions of confidence that he would immediately start slugging as well as ever4 ,his batting average soared immediately4 ,dr4 ,michio ,ikai1 professor of physiology at ,tokyo ,university1 and ,dr4 ,arthur ,h4 ,steinhaus of the ,george ,williams ,laboratory of ,physiologic ,research in ,physical ,education1 ,chicago1 have proved that track men can far surpass their best previous times under hypnosis4 ,their tests1 incidentally1 proved that there is no danger of an athlete going beyond his physiologic limit while bettering his former marks4 ,they attribute the superior performances to the removal of inhibitions1 which psychologically prevent an athlete from doing his best4 ,this report was made before the ,international ,congress on ,health and ,fitness in the ,modern ,world held in ,rome during the last ,olympic games4 ,all reports1 as a matter of fact1 show that athletic performances are improved by psychological1 not physical1 means1 and that built-in automatic reflexes protect the athlete against the danger of overexertion at all levels of awareness--hypnotic or non-hypnotic4 ,psychologists are using hypnosis more and more to facilitate concentration and learning1 and it is likely this use of the ancient science will become even more popular than its medical applications4 ,the reason one learns so quickly under hypnosis is because of time distortion which allows you to obtain the equivalent of many hours of study in a relatively short length of time4 ,undoubtedly1 you have had experience with time distortion in your daily life4 ,remember how slowly time goes when you are not interested in what you are doing and how fast it speeds by when you are8 ,and the drowning man1 who sees his whole life go by1 is an excellent example of this4 ,enough people have been saved to know that this actually happens4 ,the point is that the subconscious mind does not record the passage of time the same way as the conscious mind4 ,the conscious mind records time physically1 by means of a clock4 ,it is objective and tells you that a thought or movement requires a certain number of seconds1 minutes1 hours or days4 ,your subconscious mind has an entirely different concept of time that has nothing to do with the physical world4 ,it is called subjective because your own sense of the passage of time is used4 ,personal time varies according to the circumstances in which you find yourself4 ,haven't you noticed that when you are happy or extremely interested in something1 time passes quickly8 ,on the other hand1 if you are sad or anxious1 time seems to drag4 ,this is called time distortion4 ,when you continue in a happy state1 time is automatically shortened4 ,when you are in a state of unhappiness1 pain or anxiety1 time automatically lengthens4 ,this explains why the drowning man can review his entire life within seconds4 ,psychologists know this is possible1 because your subconscious mind contains a complete record of everything that has happened to you since birth4 ,therefore1 in moments of extreme distress your subconscious has the ability to distort and manipulate time4 ,if you have ever encountered danger or had a narrow escape1 you probably experienced time distortion4 ,everything about you went into slow motion1 and time seemed to stand still until the action was over4 ,at that point1 objective time started up again and everything returned to normal4 ,many of you no doubt read an ,associated ,press report from ,chicago on ,february #aa1 #aieh1 which reported how movie actress ,linda ,darnell had used hypnosis to help her with her first stage role4 ,she had been asked to do the part on short notice and had no time for preparation4 ,miss ,darnell telephoned her ,california physician for aid4 ,he flew to ,chicago4 ,overnight1 through hypnosis1 ,miss ,darnell learned her part and astounded the cast by knowing everyone's lines4 ,not only did she learn the part1 but she was coached in the character of the artist she was portraying4 ,as a result1 ,late ,love was a hit play4 ,miss ,darnell was under the impression she had been learning the part for a week although only about #dh hours were involved and these hours were not continuous4 ,after her first performance1 she said3 ,i never felt so secure about playing a role in my life4 ,hypnosis helped me feel the part completely4 ,imagine how much more we are going to be able to learn when study under hypnosis becomes widespread4 ,and the best part of it is that the learning is in your mind for a long time4 ,forgetting or mental blocks that interfere with your recall of the information at any time1 are reduced to a minimum4 ,in conclusion1 ,i should like to recommend the entire field of self-hypnosis to everyone4 ,it is a therapy which is positive1 dynamic and constructive4 ,an excellent example of this is contained in the autobiography1 ,rachmaninoff's ,recollections4 ,in this book1 immortal ,rachmaninoff describes in detail his success in overcoming a severe case of mental depression4 ,he had stopped composing and kept to himself1 seldom leaving his room4 ,after meeting with failure1 using the available therapeutic remedies available at that time1 he was persuaded by his relatives1 the ,satins1 to seek the help of a hypnotist called ,dr4 ,dahl4 ,with much reluctance1 he agreed to see ,dr4 ,dahl and be treated specifically with hypnosis4 ,rachmaninoff's own words read as follows3 ,although it may sound incredible1 hypnosis really helped me4 ,already at the beginning of the summer ,i began again to compose4 ,the material grew in bulk1 and new musical ideas began to stir within me--far more than ,i needed for my concerto4 ,i felt that ,dr4 ,dahl's treatment had strengthened my nervous system to a miraculous degree4 ,out of gratitude1 ,i dedicated my second concerto to him4 ,as the piece had a great success in ,moscow1 everyone began to wonder what possible connection it could have with ,dr4 ,dahl4 ,the truth1 however1 was known to ,dr4 ,dahl1 the ,satins1 and myself4 ,does this story sound incredible8 ,you have the word of one of the world's greatest musical composers that hypnosis alleviated his severe despondency4 ,this is proof that the emotions of the individual can be changed by the ideas he builds up about himself4 ,dr4 ,leland ,e4 ,hinsie1 professor of psychiatry1 ,columbia ,university1 writing in his book1 ,the ,person in the ,body1 7,w4 ,w4 ,norton ,co47 states1 ,in some persons the fear of disease is often the only damaging evidence of disease1 yet it can be so strong as to disable the person in all his daily activities4 ,the entire field of psychosomatic medicine1 which deals with the interrelationship between body and mind1 has as one of its basic tenets that suggestion not only can cause psychological personality disorders1 but many physical disorders as well4 ,it is1 therefore1 logical to conclude that the systematic use of positive mental attitudes in an organized1 progressive1 self-improvement program can be a vital influence in helping you lead a healthier life1 both emotionally and physically4 ,many people in need of help are at a loss as to where they can locate reputable hypnotherapists in their area4 ,you may consult your family physician1 county medical society or mental hygiene society4 ,the chairman of the psychology department at your nearest college or university would usually have this information4 ,i maintain a file of over #d1jjj doctors located all over the world who practice hypnosis and would be pleased to refer you to doctors located in your locality4 ,the following national organizations inducing hypnosis4 ,the technique consists of using two glass eyes with eyelashes that close as you rotate the mechanism that holds the eyes in place4 ,this action is similar to closing your eyes when falling asleep4 ,you suggest to the subject as you hold these two eyes between your thumb and first finger that his eyes will become extremely heavy and tired as the eyes that you are holding begin to close4 ,you then gradually begin to rotate your hand which causes the eyes to partially close4 ,the subject1 finding it extremely difficult to look at the eyes1 begins to close his own eyes in unison with those that you are holding4 ,you continue giving suggestions of hypnosis and before you know it the subject is under hypnosis4 ,the eyes are the size of human eyes and are colored blue with brown eyelashes in order to give the exact effect of looking into real eyes4 ,the advantage comes in the fact that the subject begins to blink his eyes immediately and you suggest to him that this is the beginning of the hypnosis4 ,it is just about impossible to look into anyone's eyes without blinking and this technique accomplishes this purpose4 ,using this knowledge1 you incorporate it into your technique and induce the deep hypnosis accordingly4 ,you can1 of course1 use this technique for self-hypnosis as well4 ,the ,powers ,hypnotic ,eyes 7#a pair7 #a ,,hypnotic ,,crystal ,,ball ,,chain this time you incorporate the pendulum effect which naturally causes the quick tiring of the eyes4 ,professional ,size--,hypnotic ,crystal ,ball ,chain #b4jj ,,the ,,hand ,,hypnodisc ,illustration optical illusions to appear before the eyes of the subject4 ,these moving illusions are ever present as you change the slightest distance of the hypnodisc from the subject4 ,this remarkable effect is achieved by the use of countless plastic linear lenses which separate the multiple images laminated behind them1 permitting a different picture to change continuously as you change the angle of view or distance4 ,naturally this device is extremely helpful in capturing the full attention of the conscious mind of the subject and helps you to achieve the hypnotic state in the shortest possible time4 your subjects this is the best approach in obtaining hypnotic control4 ,there are individuals who will not react to a strict scientific approach to hypnosis and it is with these subjects that the use of such a device as the crystal ball is of inestimable value4 ,the crystal ball is held between your thumb and first finger1 about twelve inches from the subject's eyes and slightly above eye level4 ,the hypnotic crystal ball can easily be carried with you at all times4 ,as you know1 the employment of a crystal to induce the hypnotic sleep is one of the oldest methods used in hypnosis4 ,i picture of the hypnodisc unit with the hypnodisc spiral attached is shown4 ,above is a picture of my latest hypnodisc spiral4 ,i am now offering the hypnodisc spiral as a separate unit which can be used with your phonograph turntable4 ,the spinning spiral will cause a series of optical illusions1 causing immediate eye strain and fatigue4 ,the subject feels that he is being drawn into a deep1 dark revolving cone4 ,by your suggestions of hypnotic sleep1 you can place your subject in the somnambulistic state very easily4 ,with some subjects1 hypnosis will take place almost instantaneously4 ,this technique is often employed in stage hypnotism4 ,the use of the hypnodisc spiral is also an excellent method of achieving self-hypnosis4 ,as you concentrate on the revolving hypnodisc spiral1 you give yourself suggestions of hypnotic sleep4 ,you will note the optical illusions as they occur and the pleasant1 relaxing feeling that accompanies these illusions4 ,giving yourself further suggestions of hypnotic sleep1 you find that you are easily able to attain the desired state of self-hypnosis4 ,this method is one of the most successful and popular techniques yet known for achieving hetero-hypnosis and self-hypnosis4 ,at the ,wilshire ,school of ,hypnotism1 all students in the self-hypnosis class are conditioned with the aid of the hypnodisc spiral4 ,during my lectures1 ,i place the entire hypnodisc unit on the platform without having the spiral revolve4 ,continuing with the lecture1 ,i note individuals in the audience gazing intently at the hypnodisc spiral4 ,invariably before the end of the lecture1 many will have put themselves into a deep hypnotic state4 ,this group self-hypnosis was achieved without my mentioning anything about the hypnodisc4 ,these individuals assumed that the unit is used to induce hypnosis and their looking at it with that thought in mind produced the hypnotic state4 ,the hypnodisc spiral is printed on firm cardboard1 measures twelve inches in diameter1 and has a hole in the center so you can place it on your own phonograph turntable4 ,it has the general appearance of a twelve-inch phonograph record4 ,i am sure that you will be adapt a technique that is suitable to the subject1 and not to make the subject adapt himself to the method of induction4 ,we know that with somnambulistic subjects any procedure will put the subject under hypnosis immediately4 ,the hypnotist gains complete control of his subject just as fast as he wants4 ,unfortunately1 most subjects do not respond at the first session because of conscious or subconscious fears that must be gradually eliminated4 ,once you get the subject to relax1 or let go1 he will naturally succumb to hypnosis4 ,this is the problem that confronts all hypnotists4 ,merely suggesting to the subject to relax or to let go is not sufficient1 as a rule1 to bring about this desired state4 ,the subject1 at this point1 cannot turn on or off his mental and physical state of being this easily4 ,even if we have the subject lie down1 this does not assure the hypnotic state1 as the subject can still be tense4 ,our problem is how to get the subject to relax4 ,our situation is similar to the physician telling his patient to go home and forget about a certain problem4 ,i'm sure that you'll agree that the advice is virtually impossible to follow4 ,one of the major stumbling blocks in hypnotizing a subject1 or in self-hypnosis1 lies in the fact that although we use words such as3 relax1 let yourself go1 and other similar terminology1 the subject cannot readily put the meaning of these words into effect4 ,it is difficult for most people to let go when we live in a society that beckons us to look sharp1 be sharp1 be alert1 be on the ball and make every minute count4 ,emphasis on productivity does not lend to a society of relaxed individuals4 ,in my long experience as a professional hypnotist1 ,i have tried many novel innovations for inducing hypnosis4 ,some have met with a great deal of success and others have failed4 ,it is difficult to determine the causative factors for success or failure4 ,we can only theorize4 ,i have used1 over the last ten years1 a technique that ,i shall describe now4 ,exceptionally good results have been attained with it2 however1 it is not infallible4 ,it is suggested to you as another good technique4 ,in order to help the subject relax1 ,i have been using a one hour tape recorder recording containing the continuous sound of various degrees of rain4 ,one half hour has a rain effect of very soft1 light rainfall1 as on grass1 canvas or tent top4 ,the other side contains a half hour of a rain effect such as one would hear in a heavy downfall with prominent patter of water on pavement4 ,the subject is instructed to close his eyes and listen to the sound of the rain while picturing himself relaxing near a warm1 glowing fireplace4 ,the relaxing effect thus produced enhances our chances for success in attaining a deep1 hypnotic state4 ,the tape will play on all standard recorders and comes recorded at a speed of #c ,,ips4 ,the tape alone is worth #b4ej4 ,you therefore only pay #b4ej for the actual recording4
