 from a disheartening reduction which   
raised the total debt to nearly a       
hundred thousand dollars4 ,if the coming
 eight months are to bring the same     
proportionate reduction which the       
corresponding eight months of last year 
suffered1 we frankly say now and here   
that a new debt will be incurred in     
addition to the old one4 ,we cannot     
avoid it and we cannot remain silent    
about it4  ,what now8 ,must our debt    
grow8 ,we cannot reduce our working     
forces on the instant4 ,we cannot at    
once call off our missionaries whom we  
have engaged for the current year and to
 whom we have pledged their support4    
,they have both the moral and the legal 
right to their support for the time     
stipulated4 ,this is a necessity in the 
administration of the missionary        
societies which are called to employ    

large numbers of missionaries4 ,they    
must keep faith with their workers4     
,what now8 ,reduction8 ,within the last 
three years we have reduced our work by

 in increasing measure each year by a

called to minister to the down-trodden1 
the submerged millions of our common    
country4 ,their distressful needs are in
 danger of being left aside in the      
pressure of other worthy appeals for    
aid4 ,will not the thoughtful1 the      
large-minded and large-hearted1 who lead

 in every benevolent service of the     
churches1 come to the rescue of this    
imperiled ,christian service8 ,will they
 not make this fiftieth year of the     
,american ,missionary ,association a    
year of jubilee by bringing an advance  
of at least a hundred thousand dollars  
before the assembling of our great      
,boston ,convention in ,october8        
,,bishop ,,haygood4--,the recent death  
of ,atticus ,g4 ,haygood of the         
,methodist ,episcopal ,church ,south has
 removed a very useful man from among   
those who are conscientiously engaged in
 the uplifting of the colored people and
 in promoting harmony between the two   
races in the ,south4 ,in the writing of 
his books and his numerous articles for 
the press1 in his conscientious         
administration of the ,slater ,fund and 
in his work as ,bishop1 he has rendered 
a permanent benefit to his church and

they taunted him with sneers and        
mockings4  ,the followers of the ,son of
 ,man are sometimes called in their     
measure to pass through almost similar  

circumstances changing from the highest 
praise to the bitterest denunciation4   
,dr4 ,theodore ,l4 ,cuyler1 that grand  
old man1 who surpasses all others of    
this generation in his knowledge of the 
great men of his times and in his       
accurate and vivid descriptions of them1
 has given1 in a recent article in ,the 
,evangelist1 a striking sketch of some  
of the prominent clergymen and laymen of
 this city two generations past3  ,the  
death of that noble ,christian          
philanthropist1 ,william ,a4 ,booth1    
removes from us about the last survivor 
of a remarkable group of men who for    
three-quarters of a century impressed   
themselves most deeply on the religious 
life of ,new ,york and the whole        
country4 ,among the earlier members of  
this group were the brothers1 ,arthur   
and ,lewis ,tappan1 ,harlan ,page1      
,anson ,g4 ,phelps1 ,moses ,allen1 ,r4  
,t4 ,haines1 ,w4 ,w4 ,chester1 and      
,joshua ,leavitt1 who was one of the    
earliest editors of ,the ,evangelist4   

,later on we come upon the names of     
,william ,e4 ,dodge1 ,christopher ,r4   
,robert1 ,william ,a4 ,booth1 ,apollos  
,wetmore1 ,r4 ,m4 ,hartley1 ,robert     
,carter1 ,james ,brown1 and ,jesse ,w4  
,benedict4 ,other names might be added  
to this roll of honor1 but these were   
representative and conspicuous4  ,as far
 back as #ahbe ,arthur ,tappan might    
have been called the most prominent     
,christian layman in ,new ,york4 ,his   
moral courage and philanthropic zeal    
made him on a humbler scale what ,lord  
,shaftesbury became on a larger scale in
 ,london4 ,those were days of           
foundation-laying of great religious    
enterprises4 ,the ,home ,missionary     
,society1 the ,american ,temperance     
,society1 the ,american ,sunday-school  
,union1 and the ,seamen's ,friend       
,society were born about that time4 ,in 
,february1 #ahbe1 ,arthur ,tappan sent  
on to ,boston for the ,rev4 ,wm4 ,a4    
,hallock1 who before sunrise on a winter
 morning presented himself at ,mr4      

,tappan's door4 ,they called together a 
few warm-hearted ,christians--among whom
 were ,messrs4 ,allen1 ,haines1 and     
,chester--and the ,american ,tract      
,society was organized1 and its new     
building was erected4 ,it was while in  
the employ of the ,tract ,society that  
,harlan ,page did his wonderful work as 
a consecrated laborer for the conversion
 of souls4  ,it was not ,dr4 ,cuyler's  
purpose to follow these men in their    
later experiences4 ,but we take the     
liberty of doing so in respect to one of
 the persons named1 ,arthur ,tappan1 of 
whom ,dr4 ,cuyler says that as far back 
as #ahbe he might have been called the  
most prominent ,christian layman in ,new
 ,york4 ,if we step down nine years to  
#ahcd1 we shall find that same ,arthur  
,tappan ostracized by his former        
associates1 ridiculed and denounced by  
the press1 a reward of #ej1jjj offered  
for his head1 and his store assailed by 
an infuriated mob1 and defended inside  
by ,mr4 ,tappan and his little band of  

clerks1 of whom the editor and          
proprietor of ,the ,independent was then
 one4 ,it is not too much to say that in
 #ahcd ,arthur ,tappan was the          
best-abused man in ,new ,york4  ,it may 
be asked with surprise1 ,what had made  
this great change8 ,the answer is       
simple3 ,he had become an abolitionist4 
,the same zeal in the ,master's cause   
which led him to do so much in founding 
and sustaining the great missionary and 
benevolent enterprises1 induced him to  
assist the anti-slavery cause1 which had
 then come forward4 ,he felt a profound 
sympathy for the oppressed slave1 and   
rejoiced to do what he could to secure  
his emancipation4  ,it should be        
remarked that ,mr4 ,tappan did not agree
 with those abolitionists who denounced 
the ,constitution and the ,church4 ,on  
the contrary1 he took a leading part in 
the formation of a new anti-slavery     
society that was established in         
opposition to those extremists4 ,he was 
the president of that new society for   

many years4 ,mr4 ,tappan used the same  
quiet and unassuming methods in giving  
his time1 influence1 and money to the   
anti-slavery cause as he did to the     
other benevolent and missionary         
enterprises4  ,now we think that the    
,son of ,man1 assailed by the mob in the
 ,garden and crucified on ,calvary that 
,he might save the world1 was more      
exalted1 and revealed ,his divine       
character more distinctly1 than when ,he
 was surrounded by the hosannas of the  
thoughtless and fickle mob4 ,so1 in like
 manner and at a humble distance1       
,arthur ,tappan reached his highest     
point of honor as a patriotic ,christian
 man when1 for the sake of the poor and 
downtrodden slaves1 he was willing to   
bear reproach and jeopardize his life in
 their behalf4  ,mr4 ,tappan and his    
associates1 fifty years ago1 founded the
 ,american ,missionary ,association amid
 the obloquy and danger that surrounded 
anti-slavery people in that day2 and    
now1 as the ,association is rejoicing in

 its successful and honored work in this
 its ,jubilee year1 we take pleasure in 
its behalf in testifying to the courage 
and self-sacrificing labors of its      
founders4  ,from ,the ,independent4     
,,the ,,present ,,need ,,of ,,the       
,,indians4  ,,by ,,miss ,,anna ,l4      
,,dawes4  ,it would appear that there   
was a certain definite loss to the cause
 of ,christianity among the ,indians    
when that work ceased to be called      
,foreign ,missions1 and became ,home    
,missions4 ,in the face of much         
opposition and many sneers since the day
 it first discovered its marching       
orders1 the ,church has never ceased to 
believe it to be its duty to go out into
 all the world and preach the gospel1   
and persecution1 neglect1 or starvation 
have only served to intensify its zeal4 
,it must preach the gospel to the       
heathen4 ,but in regard to ,home        
,missions the ,church has felt that it  
may preach the gospel to neighbors1 not 
that it must--that it is a good and     

desirable thing to do1 but by no means  
an inexorable duty4 ,if the ,indians had
 remained foreign heathen1 we might hope
 for a ,students' ,volunteer movement1  
for an ,inland ,mission1 for a zeal     
beyond wisdom which even sets forth to  
preach the gospel in the midst of war4  
,the ,indians are as pagan as the       
,japanese or the ,hindus1 for instance3 
their redemption is as great a necessity
 as the redemption of the ,chinese4     
,their chiefs plead for help and        
teachers in no less touching fashion    
than do ,south ,african kings4 ,but     
those fill us with missionary zeal4 ,we 
cry unto heaven for money and           
opportunity to go over seas to convert  
those2 but these1 the heathen in our    
very midst1 most of us neither see nor  
hear4 ,can it be because there is       
neither romance nor mystery about these 
others8 ,the test of the reality of our 
zeal is before us here and now4 ,we may 
measure the value of our professions for
 ourselves4  ,at this present time the  

need of the ,indians for missionaries is
 greater than ever before4 ,they have   
reached not only a new crisis1 but a    
crisis of a new kind4 ,practically      
speaking the ,government has done what  
it can for them1 or very nearly all4    
,the ,indian has law1 land1 education1  
he is fast becoming absorbed in the     
surrounding people1 but never was he in 
worse need4 ,all these great fundamental
 principles of social life have been    
thrust upon him1 oft against his will   
and largely unprepared2 certainly with  
very little comprehension of their      
resulting privileges or duties4 ,he     
needs a friend beside him at every step4
 ,thrust out into an alien and hostile  
community1 he is in some sense in a     
worse case than when he dwelt alone in  
undisturbed barbarism4  ,and again1     
civilization is not ,christianity4 ,this
 truth1 so obvious everywhere else1     
seems to be lost sight of when the      
,indians are considered4 ,we discover   
that1 although educated1 they will not  

stay refined1 that they are civilized1  
but will not remain moral4 ,behold1 says
 the caviller1 there is no good ,indian 
until he dies1 and even his friends     
complain that the young men will go back
 to gambling games and horse races4 ,it 
is true that some measure of refinement 
and fine morals is peculiarly necessary 
to the ,indians just now1 but these are 
not any necessary part of civilization4 
,they are1 however1 inseparable to      
,christianity1 and by this token the red
 man needs ,christianity for his        
everyday life even more than the white  
man1 who is surrounded by a ,christian  
atmosphere4 ,if we would have the       
newly-liberated ,indians a valuable and 
reliable part of the community in this  
world they must be ,christianized4 ,just
 why goes back a long way2 but a fact it
 is1 that whatever may be true of       
,chinese or ,poles or ,bohemians1 if the
 ,indian is to have any staying power1  
if he is to be anything but a despair to
 his friends and a curse to all around  

him1 he must be converted as well as    
civilized4 ,the use of his land1 the    
best system of law1 an absolute         
restriction upon liquor1 all together1  
will do no more for him in the          
,northwest than it has done for         
,cherokee or ,choctaw4 ,it is the       
building up of the individual that is   
needed to-day quite as much as any      
legislation which shall improve the     
community4  ,not only has the ,indian   
come to a time of special need1 not only
 does he need ,christianity to make his 
land and his education of any value1 not
 only is his law unsupported by his own 
character of little worth1 but he needs 
,christian missionaries more and more1  
because he has ceased to be the ,indian 
and become ,indians4 ,it is peculiarly  
true that every tribe1 every group1     
every family almost1 has reached a      
different state of need4 ,the varying   
pressure of circumstances combined with 
the differing methods of education      
furnished the children1 has brought the 

race to a time and place when it needs  
many1 many helpers1 who1 living with    
them as ,thomas ,riggs has lived with   
them1 will find their reward in their   
growth and development4 ,wherever the   
,riggs family live1 there the ,indian   
problem is solved4 ,where ,bishop ,hare 
and ,mary ,collins work the answer is   
already plain4 ,let the ,omahas without 
any missionary testify also to the      
darker side of the question4  ,it is not
 further efforts by the churches for the
 education of the ,indian that are      
needed4 ,there are many schools1 good1  
bad1 and indifferent1 but still schools1
 and it is certain that the ,government 
will attend to the education difficulty4
 ,but it is missionaries that the       
,indian needs2 missionaries to convert  
heathen4 ,this is an inglorious service 
and one of plenteous hardship1 but      
beyond measure it is a patriotic        
service1 beyond measure it is the work  
of ,him whose all the world began at    
,jerusalem1 who taught us to find

little one she left an orphan4 ,their   
home is a     humble one1 only one      
living room1 and yet in this humble     
cottage she     is learning to open her 
heart to the great needs of her         
,master's     kingdom1 and rejoices to  
send these offerings for the poor black

tells the story of the remarkable career
 of a ,christian minister1 whose        
activity was maintained through a long  
life1 and whose self-denial enabled him 
to accumulate handsome sums of money to 
be bestowed on worthy objects of

narrow1 but widespread1 and his genial  
love of children continued to his latest

morning1 as was his custom1 and made    
preparations for his usual bath4 ,on    
crossing the hall at the head of the    
stairway he fell down the entire flight 
and was found stretched out1 face       
downward1 on the lower floor4 ,the      
family came speedily to his relief4     
,help was summoned from the neighborhood
 and medical attendance secured4 ,it was
 the doctor's opinion that the fall was 
due to an apopleptic stroke1 which      
seized him while in the upper hall and  
rendered him powerless to either prevent

the most efficient teachers in the

needles1 pins1 and in fact almost every 
article that can be eaten or worn or    
made use of in any way4 ,quite a good   
deal of money was contributed1 and that 
was used for buying articles for needy  
persons4  ,what struck me most forcibly 
was the willing and cheerful giving4    
,some things came from homes where there
 was scarcely to be found as much more  
of the same thing as was brought4 ,i    
must mention an instance of real        

sacrifice1 though the things brought    
will seem1 without doubt1 to those who  
read this article1 as of but little     
worth4 ,one little girl we had picked   
out of the most wretched hovel only a   
few weeks before1 so ragged that except 
for pity you would wish her out of      
sight2 and when ,i saw her coming in    
with her gift ,i thought1 ,what can she 
bring8 ,well1 she brought all she had to
 bring--literally her whole wealth--a   
few dirty little picture cards which    
some one had given to her and which she 
had treasured lo1 these many years1     
judging from the dirt accumulated on    
them4 ,the gift seemed trivial1 but it  
meant something to this little girl4    
,hundreds there are in this very city   
who are in no school--who can't attend  
for want of money4 ,oh that ,god's      
treasures could be used to save his own 
dear children6  ,thank ,god there are   
many who hold a little of ,god's gold   
who have laid it on the altar for ,his  
use6 ,i wish some of the consecrated    

gifts ,i have received and used for two 
poor children1 with the accompanying    
letters1 were not so sacred2 ,i should  
feel like mentioning some--where a poor 
factory girl sent one dollar1 with a    
,god bless you6 and where a good mother 
in ,israel sent fifty cents in stamps1  
saying1 ,this is my consecration money  
of three months4 ,so poor was she that  
the accumulation was by a penny now and 
then4 ,many larger amounts ,i have      
received1 but all with the same cheerful
 ,god bless you6 that so cheers the     
heart of the missionary far from home   
and loved ones4   ,,prayer ,,with ,a    
,,backbone4--,the pastor of one of our  
smaller churches in the ,south1         
describing the concert of prayer held in
 behalf of the ,association1 tells this 
brief but pithy story about it3 ,the    
objects and purposes and work of the    
,american ,missionary ,association were 
briefly reviewed at the prayer-meeting1 
and the prayers in its behalf were      
fervent and earnest4 ,but we shall not  

cease1 but continue to pray for your

of an earthquake4  ,digestive organs are
 termed dijective organs1 and the       
different races of men were given as    
,indians1 ,negroes1 ,whites1 and        
,french4   ,,family ,,feud ,,in ,,the   
,,mountains4  ,,by ,a ,,missionary4  ,i 
have recently witnessed the result of a 
,kentucky riot1 the first since ,i came 
here4 ,two desperate factions met on the

 night of the #beth1 at eleven o'clock4 
,four men and a woman were engaged in   
it4 ,the leader of the first faction    
fired and shot the leader of the second 
faction in his own house1 and another of
 the first faction fired at the leader  
of the second faction till he fell with 
two balls through his left arm1 one ball
 broke his right leg1 and two balls went
 into his back4 ,the leader of the      
second faction shot the leader of the   
first faction in the right leg and he   
fell2 both men lying within a few feet  
of each other4 ,the wife of the leader  
of the second faction took one of his   
pistols and started to kill the first   
leader1 but one of his men stepped up   
with two revolvers and told her not to  
fire1 that he would kill her if she did4
 ,this ended the shooting4 ,the first   
faction helped to carry the leader of   
the second faction in the house and then
 took the first leader away4 ,they used 
#cb and #dd calibers4  ,the first leader
 lives four miles from my house4 ,when  

they told him he could not live he asked
 them to send for me4 ,i went and helped
 dress his wounds and sung and prayed   
with him4 ,he said he had been a bad    
man1 and asked me to pray for him4 ,i   
heard to-day that some of his friends   
wanted him to send for some other       
minister1 but he said no1 he wanted no  
one but myself2 and ,i expect to go and 
see him to-morrow if he is still living4
 ,i believe in the near future we will  
have a good hold in eastern ,kentucky1  
if the ,american ,missionary            
,association is successful in getting   
the right ministers4 ,the minister's    
wife has a great deal to do with his    
success in this work4   ,,an ,,incident 
,,of ,,mountain ,,work4  ,,by ,a        
,,missionary4  ,at noon1 the #afth1 ,i  
reached ,rev4 ,mr4 ----'s home1 and     
after dinner he hitched up his horse1   
and we set out for ----1 some twelve    
miles away1 reaching there at dark4     
',twas here ,i heard the wonderful story
 of ----'s rescue and salvation through 

,bro4 ----1 one of ,rev4 ,mr4 ----'s    
converts4 ,next morning ,i met the      
,sunday-school and addressed it4 ,then  
came the after-service1 and it was a    
pleasure to look into those faces and   
preach the gospel message1 which was so 
earnestly and anxiously received1 and to
 think that only six months before a    
preacher could not come into this valley
 to preach and be safe4 ,some were shot1
 others thrashed1 and because of the low
 element located there the place was    
given up as hopeless4  ,our ,bro4 ----1 
in his quiet way1 went into the homes   
and gained them by personal contact1 and
 for six months held meetings1 during   
which they were constrained to surrender
 to ,christ4 ,i had the pleasure of     
hearing some thirty tell the story of   
how our ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 preacher won them4  
,it was a marvelous work1 and the good  
part is the activity that characterizes 
each member4 ,of the sixty members      
belonging to ,rev4 ,mr4 ----'s churches 
fifty-seven are praying members1 and all

 sixty take active part in testimony4 ,a
 most cordial relation exists between   
pastor and people4 ,we held an afternoon
 service at another one of ,rev4 ,mr4   
----'s churches1 where ,i had the       
privilege of talking and meeting the    
friends4   ,a ,,mother ,,teaching       
,,revenge4--,we know the mother in the  
home of the mountaineer is a strong     
influence4 ,how important that she be   
trained to occupy this position6 ,i have
 sat at the fireside and heard the      
mother relate the story of a murder and 
turn to her eldest boy and say1 ',mind  
ye1 if ever ye meet up with him1 you'll 
not forget to do what ye'er mammy       
learned ye to do4' ,and that boy will   
not forget unless the grace of ,god keep
 him4   ,,an ,,interesting              
,,conversion4--,the month has been a    
most blessed one to us at ,deer ,lodge4 
,the meetings were not large in numbers1
 but they were rich in power and full of
 spiritual blessings4 ,the report that  
---- was converted spread quickly1 and a

 large number came last night to see and
 hear him4 ,he had been a wicked man for
 many years1 and now his change is      
marked1 and he proposes to live as near 
the ,christian life as possible4 ,he    
commenced to read the ,bible1 and reads 
a chapter both morning and evening4 ,he 
told me last night1 ,i cannot read much1
 but my wife can help me1 and so        
together we shall help each other4 ,oh1 
how much joy it would give us if the    
,holy ,spirit would sweep into his      
kingdom a number of other precious souls
 at this place4 ,we shall pray and work 
for this end4 ,the young ladies who     
accepted ,christ now take part in our   
meetings1 and it is no small pleasure to
 hear them testify for ,christ4   ,a    
,,communion ,,service4--,we had a       
pleasant communion service last ,sunday4
 ,six young people joined in regular    
,congregational form after careful      
examination4 ,we had previously elected 
a new member1 who was a pupil in the    
school last year1 to be deacon          

immediately upon his joining the church4
 ,one of those who joined the church    
made an attempt on my life last year4   
,though he is nearly as old as ,i he is 
now a docile pupil in the fourth-reader 
grade4   ,,heatherly ,,chapel4--,the new
 church in the mountain field1 in       
,tennessee was organized in ,november1  
and is called ,heatherly ,chapel4 ,it is
 enjoying a very interesting revival    
season4 ,about fifty have been hopefully
 converted1 twenty-two having joined the
 new church4 ,this new church is an     
important addition to the work which the
 ,american ,missionary ,association is  
accomplishing in the mountain field4    
,a ,,useful ,,church4--,from ,corbin    
comes the message of deep spiritual     
interest and large usefulness in the    
church4 ,at the last communion five were
 added and the work still goes on very  
encouragingly4 ,a ,sunday-school is     
carried on by the ,christian            
,endeavorers of the ,corbin church in a

our churches would come to the help of

in so liberal a way1 what might we not

 accepts less than half pay in these    

times of straitness1 and tries to eke   
out a support for himself and those

from lucrative way1 but gives his heart 
to mission work4 ,i feel guilty every   
time ,i make a remittance to            
,watsonville because the pittance we    
allow him is so small as compared with  
the work he does4 ,but he and the       
zealous teacher have other rewards far  
richer than coin4  ,i reached the

children was just being dismissed4 ,but 
it seems they had heard about me1 and   
were glad to come to order again1 and   
get acquainted with me and let me hear

much nearer the millennium than ,i dare
