sermon1 intelligent foreigners approve my course4 ,the ,germans of ,wisconsin have sent me a copy of their memorial to ,congress1 asking for such a modification of our naturalization laws as will protect our free institutions from selfish and ignorant immigrants4 ,the intelligent foreigners have taken the initiative4 ,your ,pastor1 ,,john ,p4 ,,newman4 ,,america ,,for ,,americans4 ,i have set thee on high above all the nations of the earth4--,deut4 xxviii41 #a4 ,by the voice of magisterial authority this secular day has been hushed into the sacred quiet of a national ,sabbath4 ,from savannahs and prairies1 from valleys and mountains1 from the ,atlantic to the ,pacific1 more than fifty millions of freemen have been invited to gather around the altars of the ,god of our fathers1 and pour forth the libation of their gratitude to ,him who is the giver of every good and perfect gift4 ,if in all the past1 nations have made public recognition of the divinities which have presided over their destiny1 according to their faith and practice1 it is but reasonable and highly appropriate that we1 as a ,christian people1 enlightened as no other people1 favored as no other nation1 should once in the twelve months consecrate a day to the recognition of ,him whose throne is on the circle of the heavens1 who is the benefactor of the husbandman1 the genius of the artisan1 the inspiration of the merchant1 and from whom comes all those personal1 domestic1 social1 and national benedictions which render us a happy people and this day memorable in the annals of time4 ,if the year that ends to-day has been marked with severity it has also been distinguished by goodness4 ,if chastisements have come to us as individuals1 families1 communities1 and as a nation2 if the earthquake1 and the tornado1 and the conflagration1 have combined to teach us our dependence on the ,supreme ,being--all these should be esteemed as ministers of the ,highest to teach us that we are pensioners upon the infinite bounty of the ,almighty2 that in our prosperity we should remember ,his mercies2 in our adversity we should deplore our transgressions4 ,it is evident to the most casual observer that the past year has been significant in the manifestations of divine guidance and goodness4 ,to-day peace reigns throughout our vast domain4 ,no foreign foe invades our shores4 ,how superior our condition by way of contrast with our neighbors on this side of the globe4 ,in contrast with ,central and ,south ,america1 the home of turbulence and misrule1 where ignorance1 combined with a perverted ,christianity1 has darkened and enslaved2 where the wheels of industry have been impeded and the march to a higher civilization obstructed--how bold the contrast between these two sections of our continent--a contrast that must be suggestive to every thoughtful mind and awaken the question whether this is due to what some call the fortuities of national life or whether it is the result of a genius of government that is sublime and a religion that is divine4 ,and if we turn our eyes over the great deep to the most favored nations beyond the ,atlantic1 the contrast inspires grateful emotions1 and we are equally led to contemplate the causes which have brought about a condition so favorable to us4 ,the most venerable nations in ,europe1 countries that have lived through more than a millennium1 are to-day shaken by internal disturbance4 ,those institutions which have come down from the hoary past1 which have been considered pre-eminent in the affections and faith of mankind1 now topple to their fall4 ,uneasy lies the head that wears a crown1 whether man or woman2 and no government in ,europe is in a state of peaceful security4 ,alarm dwells in the palace4 ,fear1 like a bloody phantom1 haunts the throne1 and the vast nations of ,europe1 with all their agriculture and commerce and manufacture1 and all their majesty of law and ordinances of religion1 are maintained in a questionable peace by not less than three millions of men armed to the teeth2 while in this country1 so vast in its domain1 so complicated in its population1 from ,north to ,south1 from ,east to ,west1 preserved in peace1 not by standing armies or floating navies1 but by a moral sense1 a quickened conscience1 the guardian of our homes1 our altars1 and our nation4 ,certainly the farmer stands nearest to ,god4 ,agriculture underlies all national wealth4 ,the farmer ministers to the wants of king and prince1 of president and senator2 the farmer must be esteemed as the direct medium of blessing through whom ,god manifests his goodness to the nation4 ,we have been accustomed to such phenomenal crops that it almost goes without saying that the past year has been phenomenal in its agricultural productions4 ,indeed there has been a wealth in the soil1 a wealth in the mines1 a wealth in the seas1 which awakens astonishment and admiration in the minds of those beyond the deep--for it is a statistical fact that our agricultural products for the year just closing is not less than three and a half thousand millions of dollars in valuation4 ,how difficult to appreciate the fact6 ,one thousand seven hundred million bushels of corn1 valued at five hundred and eighty millions of dollars2 four hundred and fifty million bushels of wheat1 valued at three hundred and fifty-five millions of dollars2 six and a half million bales of cotton1 estimated in valuation at two hundred and fifty millions of dollars4 ,and including all the other agricultural products1 the statistician of the ,government estimates the value at three and a half thousand millions of dollars4 ,and this is but a repetition of other years4 ,no6 ,it exceeds other years6 ,it is a great fact that one and a half millions of square miles of cultivated land in this country now subject to the plow could feed a thousand millions of persons1 and then we could have five thousand millions of bushels of grain for exportation4 ,in ten years1 from #ahgj to #ahhj1 we produced over seven hundred millions of dollars of precious metals1 and the last year the valuation is estimated at seventy-five millions in gold and silver2 and rising above these colossal and phenomenal figures1 our great manufacturing people during the past year have produced not less than five thousand millions of dollars in valuation4 ,the mind staggers in the presence of these tremendous facts4 ,then our national wealth is as phenomenal as are the annual products of soil1 and mine1 and skill1 and commerce4 ,in #ahhj our national wealth was estimated at forty-four thousand millions of dollars1 which would buy all ,russia1 ,turkey1 ,italy1 ,south ,africa1 and ,south ,america--possessions inhabited by not less than one hundred and seventy-seven millions of people4 ,this enormous national wealth exceeds the wealth of ,great ,britain by two hundred and seventy-six millions of dollars4 ,england's wealth is the growth of centuries1 while our wealth1 at the most1 can be said to be the growth of one century4 ,nay1 the fact is that most of ours has been created in the last twenty years4 ,in #ahfj our national wealth was estimated at sixteen thousand millions of dollars4 ,but from #ahfj to #ahhj our wealth increased twenty-eight thousand millions of dollars--ten thousand millions more than the entire wealth of the ,empire of ,russia4 ,from #ahgj to #ahhj1 ten years1 the increase was twenty thousand millions4 ,this is without a parallel4 ,surely these great facts call upon the ,president of the ,united ,states to convoke the freemen of this country around their religious altars to offer their gratitude and praise to ,him from whom cometh all these blessings2 for in ,his hand are the resources of national wealth4 ,with him are the ministers of good and the ministers of evil4 ,he can marshal the insect4 ,he can excite the malaria4 ,he can call forth the tornado4 ,he can put down his foot and wreck the earth with earthquake throes4 ,the ministers of evil are with ,him1 and stand with closed eyes and folded wings around ,his throne1 but not with deaf ears1 waiting to hear ,his summons1 ,go forth4 ,so also around ,his throne stand the angels of plenty1 in whose footfalls rise the golden harvest2 who quicken human genius on the land1 on the ocean1 the artificer1 the artisan1 the scholar1 the philanthropist1 and the patriot4 ,it is by these resources of good and evil1 forever the ministers of the great ,god1 we learn our dependence on ,him2 it is with the utmost propriety that this ,christian nation recognize ,him as ,god over all and blessed forevermore4 ,it is eminently proper on a national day like this1 standing in the presence of these phenomenal mercies1 these crowning plenties1 that we differentiate ourselves from the nations of our own continent and from the most favored nations beyond the sea4 ,it is proper for us to inquire the divine purpose in placing us among the nations of the earth1 and what is our great mission4 ,there are certain facts which prophesy--for facts are as eloquent in prophetic announcement as are the lips of prophet or seer4 ,we should remember that our location is everything to us as a national power1 of intelligence and wealth1 and that this location is in the wake of national prosperity and greatness4 ,it may have escaped your notice that around this globe is a narrow zone1 between the thirtieth and sixtieth parallels of north latitude1 and within that narrow zone is our home4 ,within that belt of power have existed all the great nations of the past1 and in it exist all the great nations of the present4 ,what is there in this charmed circle1 in this favored zone1 that brings national power8 ,we may contract this zone by ten degrees and the same thing is true4 ,it is true that north of this zone there have been nations of wealth1 of luxury1 and of influence4 ,south of this zone are ,egypt and ,arabia and ,india1 and other nations that have lived in splendor4 ,but the peoples that have given direction to the thought of mankind1 that have created the philosophy for the race1 that have given jurisprudence and history and oratory1 and poetry and art and science1 and government1 to mankind1 have been crowded1 as it were1 within this zone of supremacy1 within this magical belt of national prosperity4 ,examine your globe1 and there is ,greece1 that gave letters to the world2 ,rome1 that gave jurisprudence to mankind2 ,palestine1 that gave religion to our race4 ,and to-day there is ,germany1 that gave a ,luther to the church and a ,gutenberg to science1 and there is ,england swaying her mighty sceptre over land and sea4 ,our location is in this wake of power--within this magical zone4 ,surely there must be a destiny foretold by this great fact1 and it is but wise for us as intelligent freemen on this national day to consider the significance of the prophecy4 ,our national home is not amid the polar snows of ,northern ,russia nor the burning sands of ,central ,africa1 but sweeping over the lovely regions of the temperate zone1 it lies too far south to be bound in perpetual chains of frost1 and too far north to sink under the enervating influences of a tropical sun4 ,although on the side of the equator destined to be the great receptacle of human life1 yet it is too far from the belligerent powers of the old world to fall a victim to their corruption or to the weight of their combined forces4 ,with a shore line equalling the circuit of the globe1 and with a river navigation duplicating that vast measurement1 our national domain is only one-sixth less than that of the sixty states--republics1 kingdoms1 and empires--of ,europe4 ,indeed1 it is equal to old ,rome's vast domain1 which extended from the river ,euphrates to the ,western ocean and from the walls of ,antoninus to the ,mountains of the ,moon4 ,our location is for a purpose4 ,for if you and ,i believe in the mission of individuals who accomplish the purposes of ,providence1 we must believe in the mission of nations for the elevation of mankind to a better future4 ,and1 my countrymen1 it is equally significant that we stand above all nations in our origin4 ,we started where other nations left off4 ,unrivalled for luxury and oriental splendor1 the ,assyrians sprung from a band of hunters4 ,grand in her pyramids1 and obelisks1 and sphinxes1 ,egypt rose from that race despised by mankind4 ,great in her jurisprudence1 giving law to the world1 the ,romans came from a band of freebooters on the seven hills that have been made immortal by martial genius2 and that very nation1 whose poets we copy1 whose orators we seek to imitate1 whose artistic genius is the pride of the race1 came from barbarians1 cannibals2 and that proud nation beyond the sea1 that sways her sceptre over land and ocean1 sprang from painted barbarians--for such were the aborigines of proud ,albion's ,isle when ,caesar invaded those shores4 ,our forefathers stood upon the very summit of humanity4 ,recall our constitutional convention4 ,perhaps no such convention had ever assembled in the halls of a nation4 ,that convention1 composed of fifty-five men1 and such men6 ,they were giants in intellect1 in moral character2 all occupying a high social position2 twenty-nine were university men1 and those that were not collegiates were men of imperial intellects and of commanding common sense4 ,in such a gathering were ,franklin1 the venerable philosopher2 ,washington1 who is ever to be revered as patriot and philanthropist2 and ,madison1 and ,hamilton1 two of the most profound thinkers of that or of any other age4 ,it is one of those marvels that we should recall of which we have a right to be proud2 but in our pride we should not fail to ascertain why the ,almighty should start us as a nation at the very acme of humanity--redeemed1 educated1 and made grand by the influences of a divine ,christianity4 ,those men were not mere colonists1 nor were they limited in their patriotism4 ,no pent-up ,utica could confine their patriotism1 for those men grasped the fundamental principle of human rights4 ,nay1 they declared the ultimate truth of humanity1 leaving nothing to added since1 though a century has passed4 ,great modifications have come to the governments of ,europe4 ,some changes have taken place in our national life4 ,yet ,i appeal to your intelligent memory1 to your calm judgments1 if anything has been added to our declaration of rights1 those declarations founded upon the constitution of nature4 ,these men voiced the brotherhood of the race4 ,all other declarations prior to this were but for dynasties1 or were ethnic at most4 ,but those men swept the horizon of humanity4 ,these men called forth1 as it were1 the oncoming centuries of time1 and in their presence declared that all men are created free and equal4 ,they not only declared the ultimate truth of human rights1 but they exhausted the right of revolution4 ,they created a constitution founded upon the will of the people1 based upon our great declaration of rights1 embracing man's inalienable right to life1 liberty1 and happiness4 ,the instrument which their genius created was left amendable by the oncoming wants of time1 modified in subordinate relations which might be suggested by emergencies and the unfolding of our race4 ,here then are the great fingers of prophecy pointing to our future4 ,and we have been equally favored in our population1 whether we take the ,puritans who landed in ,new ,england1 the ,dutch who landed in ,new ,york1 or the ,english who crowded ,maryland and ,virginia4 ,they were first-class families4 ,especially do we trace back with pride that glorious genius for liberty1 for intelligence1 for devotion manifested by those heroic men and women who1 amid the desolations of a terrific winter landed on a barren rock to transform a vast wilderness1 through which the wild man roamed1 into a garden wherein should grow the flowers and the fruits of freedom4 ,we sometimes deprecate the cosmopolitan character of our population4 ,it is a fact1 however1 that the best blood of the old world came to us until within ten years--not the decrepit1 not the maimed1 not the aged2 for over fifty per cent4 of those who came were between fifteen and thirty1 and have grown up to be honorable citizens in the composition of our constitutional society4 ,they came not as paupers4 ,many of them came1 each bringing seventy dollars1 some #ahj dollars1 and in the aggregate they brought millions of dollars4 ,there has been1 however1 a change1 a manifest change1 in the character of those from foreign shores within the last decade4 ,the time was when we welcomed everybody that might immigrate to this country2 when we threw our gates wide open2 when in our ,fourth of ,july orations1 we proclaimed this to be the asylum of the oppressed1 the home of the down-trodden4 ,but in the process of time this great opportunity afforded the nations of the old world came to be abused1 and to-day is the largest source of our national danger4 ,we are now bound to call a halt all along the line of immigration2 to say to those peoples of the old world that this is not a new ,africa1 nor a new ,ireland1 nor a new ,germany1 nor a new ,italy1 nor a new ,england1 nor a new ,russia2 that this is not a brothel for the ,mormon1 a fetich for the negro1 a country for the ticket-of-leave-men2 not a place for the criminals and paupers of ,europe2 but this country is for man--man in his intelligence1 man in his morality1 man in his love of liberty1 man1 whosoever he is1 whencesoever he cometh4 ,cries of amen1 followed by applause4 ,the time has come for us to call a halt all along the line1 and if we do not close the gates we should place them ajar4 ,we should do two things3 ,first1 declare that this country is for ,americans4 ,applause4 ,it is not for ,germans1 nor for ,irishmen1 nor for ,englishmen1 nor for ,spaniards1 nor for the ,chinese1 nor for the ,japanese1 but it is for ,americans4 ,cries of amen and applause4 ,i am not to-day reviving the ,know-,nothing cry1 for ,i am glad to say that ,i am not a know-nothing in any sense4 ,laughter4 ,nor am ,i reviving what may be called the old ,native ,american cry1 for we have outlived that4 ,but ,i am simply declaring that ,america is for ,typical ,americans4 ,in other words1 that we are determined by all that is honorable in law1 by all that is energetic in religion1 by all that is dear to our altars and our firesides1 that this country shall not become un-,american4 ,let us to-day proclaim to the world that he is an ,american1 whether native-born or foreign-born1 who accepts seven great ideas which shall differentiate him from all other peoples on the face of the globe4 ,i am bound to say1 and you will agree with me1 that in proportion there are as many intelligent foreigners 7that is1 foreign-born7 in this congregation1 in our city and in our country1 who are in full accord with this utterance as there are of those to the manor born4 ,in other words could ,i call the roll1 ,i would find as many intelligent foreigners who came here1 not for selfishness1 but for liberty and for ,america's sake1 who would be in accord with me in declaring that ,america is for the ,typical ,american4 ,applause4 ,i speak without prejudice2 ,i know that there are those here of foreign birth who are ornaments in every department of society4 ,they minister to the sick as learned physicians4 ,they plead in all our courts of justice4 ,they are the eloquent exponents of divine truth4 ,they are in our halls of legislation4 ,they beautify private life in all the immunities and refinements thereof4 ,they have added to the wealth of the nation4 ,but while ,i make this concession1 and ,i do it cheerfully and proudly1 yet ,i must affirm that there are three classes of ,americans3 the native-born1 the foreign-born and the typical ,american4 ,the native ,american has the advantage of birth1 out of which flows one supreme advantage--he may be the ,president of the ,united ,states4 ,this is a wise provision1 as nativity is a primary source of patriotism1 and time is necessary to appreciation4 ,but the native may be a worthless citizen4 ,he should be the typical ,american1 but he has too often failed to be4 ,the ,tweeds1 the ,wards1 their like1 are no honor whatever to the native stock4 ,some of the worst scoundrels who have scandalized our nation have been born to the soil4 ,then there is the foreign-born ,american1 who is such by naturalization4 ,he may be worthy of our free institutions1 as many are2 he may be unworthy1 as many have proved themselves to be4 ,but1 rising above these1 is the typical ,american1 without regard to place of birth4 ,he is the possessor of the seven great attributes1 which1 in my humble judgment1 constitute the true ,american3 ,i4 ,that our civil and political rights are not grants from superiors to inferiors1 but flow out of the order and constitution of nature4 ,,ii4 ,that the force to maintain these rights is not physical1 but moral4 ,,iii4 ,that the safeguard of such rights is individual culture and responsibility4 ,,iv4 ,that secular education is provided by the ,state1 and is forever free from sectarian control4 ,v4 ,that there is no alliance of ,state and ,church2 the ,government non-religious1 but not irreligious4 ,,vi4 ,that the ,sabbath is a day of rest from ordinary care and toil4 ,,vii4 ,that ,christianity1 in its ethics and charities1 is the religion of this land4 ,it was a bold venture for the fathers of this ,republic to declare personal liberty foremost1 without regard to birth or education or civilization4 ,this has elevated our nation above all nations4 ,it was sublime courage for those grand men to declare that our civil and political rights are not grants from superiors to inferiors1 but that they flow out of the order and the constitution of nature4 ,it is this1 my countrymen1 that differentiates us1 that distinguishes us from ,englishmen1 and ,frenchmen1 and ,russians4 ,what are the two great declarations of which ,england is proud8 ,take the ,magna ,charta ,libertatum4 ,the historians say that this is the bulwark of ,english freedom4 ,yes1 ,englishmen1 you do right to so esteem it4 ,but then you should remember that the ,magna ,charta ,libertatum was a concession from ,king ,john--a concession from a superior to inferiors1 and the men who wrung that concession from that ,english king did not esteem themselves his equals1 but permitted themselves to be treated as inferiors4 ,then take what is known in ,english parliamentary history as ,a ,petition of ,rights4 ,it secured a concession from ,king ,charles ,i--a superior to inferiors4 ,but our fathers said we are the superiors4 ,applause4 ,we recognize no superior but ,god2 we declare a government of the people1 by the people1 and for the people4 ,applause4 ,we ask not for a ,magna ,charta ,libertatum4 ,we offer no petition of rights4 ,jefferson made our declaration of rights and the fathers signed it1 saying1 ,we are born free and equal1 created in the image of ,god2 our political rights are inalienable1 inseparable from our birth4 ,applause4 ,that declaration turned the corner of political history4 ,it astounded all ,europe4 ,it sent a chill through royal blood4 ,it caused a paleness to come over kings and queens2 yet it was a declaration which oncoming generations approved1 and oncoming centuries will applaud1 because born of truth1 justice and liberty4 ,the naturalized ,american must renounce all allegiance to foreign prince or potentate or government2 in so doing he must reject the assumed superiority of any human grantor and assert the superiority of the individual citizen in whom inhere these rights4 ,applause4 ,the fathers ventured the assertion that a government of the people and by the people and for the people should be supported1 not by physical force1 but by a moral power1 an astounding fact in the national history4 ,the power that conquered in the war for independence was a moral force4 ,it was the spirit of '#gf4 ,it was the spirit of '#gf that inspired ,warren to say3 ,put me where the battle is hottest4 ,it was the spirit of '#gf that moved ,putnam to shout out on the eve of battle3 ,powder6 powder6 ,ye gods1 give us powder6 ,it was the spirit of '#gf that caused the ,new ,jersey dominie1 when the army was destitute of wadding1 to rush to the church and1 getting a copy of ,watts's psalms1 shout out3 ,there1 boys1 put ,watts into them4 ,it was the spirit of '#gf that led ,washington to consecrate himself1 his time1 his wealth1 and the grandest men in the country to consecrate themselves for the accomplishment of the grandest of facts4 ,the ,continental ,army was an army of plowmen and artisans1 poorly armed and poorly clothed4 ,baron ,steuben1 when he came to this country with ,lafayette to organize our army1 declared that the only regularity that he saw was1 that the short men were put in front and the tall men put behind1 and old ,putnam gave him this explanation1 that ,americans didn't care about their heads2 they only cared about their legs2 shelter their legs and they would fight forever4 ,baron ,steuben attempted to organize those troops1 but lost his temper and swore at them in three languages at the same time4 ,laughter4 ,but the spirit of '#gf led to history4 ,we maintain our free institutions by moral force4 ,our twenty thousand soldiers scattered here and there wherever they can find an ,indian to shoot is hardly a respectable police force4 ,laughter4 ,the founders of this ,republic knew that freemen are soldiers in the disguise of citizens4 ,let the tocsin of war be founded2 let a foreign foe invade our shores2 let an insurrectionary body arise in our midst1 and a million of freemen1 armed to the teeth1 will ,rally round the flag1 boys1 rally once again4 ,vociferous applause4 ,it is difficult for immigrants coming to this country to appreciate this fact4 ,they pass through the land and see no gens d'armes1 no standing armies1 and rarely a policeman4 ,laughter4 ,the true ,american stands forever on duty1 a soldier of the ,republic in the disguise of a citizen1 the custodian of the ,republic's life4 ,out of such a citizenship comes the moral sentiment which in its aggregation is public opinion1 which is mightier than standing armies or floating navies4 ,applause4 ,a third attribute is the individuality of the citizen1 out of which comes the collective man1 our national life4 ,we have exalted the individual2 the ,american citizen is a republic of one4 ,whether we have fifty millions1 or ten millions1 or a million1 whatever may be the ratio of our population1 the ,government recognizes the individuality of the citizen as paramount4 ,as ,god is the center of the universe1 and ,christ the center of the church1 so the citizen is the center of this ,government4 ,all its laws1 all its administrations1 all its soldiers in the army1 all its guns in the navy1 are for the protection of the ,american citizen4 ,wherever he wanders1 whether in ,africa1 or ,europe1 or ,asia1 or ,germany1 or ,ireland1 or ,cuba1 or ,mexico1 the ,american citizen must and shall be protected4 ,applause4 ,it is difficult for men coming from ,europe1 where men are contemplated in masses1 to realize the potency of individuality2 but it underlies our free institutions4 ,fourthly1 he is an ,american1 whether native-born or foreign-born1 who accepts the bold venture of the fathers to segregate public education from the teachings of the church4 ,it was a bold move in political science4 ,there is no authority under the ,constitution of the ,united ,states1 there should be no authority in the constitution of any ,state1 there should be no authority in the municipality of any part of the country1 to impose religious instruction upon the childhood of ,america4 ,you and ,i may tremble in the presence of this tremendous fact1 this daring project in the science of statecraft1 but then you must remember that1 according to the organic law of our country1 we know no class but citizens1 we know no obligation but protection1 no duty but the welfare of the people4 ,in all the nations abroad there is the combination of secular and religious instruction4 ,arithmetic1 geometry1 geography1 physiology1 must be taught under the sanctions of religion4 ,but in this country public education is separated from sectarian religious teaching4 ,we may pause in the presence of such a fact4 ,we know that intelligence is almost a boundless power4 ,intelligence has produced as much evil as it has good2 the greatest monsters who have damned humanity have been men of the highest possible culture1 and the men who are sowing the seed in this country of discord are men of sublime intellects and polished education4 ,and therefore the founders of the ,republic recognized the duty of the individual citizen to add home instruction1 instruction in the church1 instruction in the ,sunday-school1 to sanctify this intelligence4 ,whenever they expounded constitutional law1 or spoke in behalf of the perpetuity of our institutions1 they never failed to give pre-eminence to private virtue and public morality2 nor did they hesitate to say that this virtue in private life and this morality in the public society must flow out of that religion which we esteem divine4 ,those great men ventured on another and a desperate mission1 the segregation of ,state from ,church4 ,in the nations of the old world these are allied4 ,the ,czar is the head of the church4 ,victoria is the head of the church4 ,the ,king of ,germany is the head of the church4 ,the ,hapsburg1 of ,austria1 is the head of the church4 ,the ,sultan is the head of the church4 ,but here we have no earthly head of the church4 ,to the individual ,christian ,christ is the head of the church4 ,this is fundamental in our ,government4 ,here we have a free church in a free country4 ,christianity had been supported by thrones in the old world4 ,religion had been enforced by armies and navies4 ,the great cathedrals1 and what are called the church livings1 had been maintained by a tax imposed upon people who did not believe the creed taught1 and did not observe the forms of worship practiced4 ,in our organic law it is stated that ,congress shall not legislate on the subject of religion4 ,religion shall be free4 ,here the ,mohammedan may rear his mosque and read his ,koran4 ,here the ,brahmin may rear his pagoda and read his ,shasta4 ,all religionists may come and worship here1 but their worship shall not infringe upon the worship of others nor work injury to the body-politic4 ,the ,typical ,american should set his face against all seeming alliance of ,church and ,state4 ,we say to the ,holy ,father1 live in peace4 ,stay in ,rome4 ,live on the banks of the ,tiber4 ,if you come here1 you must be an ,american citizen1 rejecting your doctrine of temporal power4 ,you may come and be naturalized and be a voter1 but we can have no temporal popes here4 ,applause and laughter4 ,so we say to our countrymen that come from dear old ,ireland1 the best country in the world to emigrate from1 laughter1 to the ,italian1 to the ,spaniard1 to the ,german1 you may belong to the church of the spiritual pontiff but you must renounce all allegiance to temporal pontiffs4 ,i hold that under our laws of naturalization1 that it is the duty of every cardinal1 every archbishop1 every bishop1 and every priest1 every monk1 ,franciscan or ,jesuit1 to solemnly renounce before ,god and the holy angels1 all political allegiance to the ,pope as a temporal prince1 who to-day is seeking to re-establish diplomatic relations with ,england and other ,european nations in recognition of his temporal sovereignty4 ,and he is a true ,american citizen1 whether foreign-born or native-born1 who maintains1 as an ,american institution1 the ,holy ,sabbath-day4 ,he can call it ,sunday1 after the old pagan god1 but he must rest on the seventh day1 rest from toil1 rest in the interest of the dignity of labor1 rest as discount upon capital1 rest for intelligence1 rest for compensation1 rest for domestic happiness1 rest for pious culture4 ,the seventh day of every week should be consecrated to cessation from labor and devoted to physical and mental repose4 ,it should not be a day of recreation to be spent in riotous living and in brawls1 but a day peaceful1 in harmony with the institutions of religion and the dominant sentiment of the country4 ,our fathers consecrated the ,sabbath1 and had you the patience to hear and ,i1 the time to read from ,franklin1 from ,jefferson1 from ,washington1 touching the ,sabbath1 in recognition of it as indispensable to the welfare of our body politic1 you would be confirmed in this great truth4 ,the danger to-day is that we are becoming un-,american in cutting loose from the ,sabbath-day as a day of rest and of worship4 ,i cannot invoke the civil law to do more than to say that it shall be a day of rest4 ,i cannot invoke the civil law to say that that man shall worship here or worship there1 or worship at all1 but ,i can invoke the civil law to say that it shall be a non-secular day2 not a day for the transaction of business1 but a day on which the laboring man shall walk out under ,god's free skies and say3 ,this is my day1 the day of a freeman4 ,applause4 ,the tendency is to transplant a ,european ,sabbath here2 the ,german with his lager1 and the ,frenchman with his wine1 and the ,irishman with his shillalah4 ,laughter4 ,no1 no1 gentlemen1 stay on the other side of the great deep4 ,we don't want these things or this day on this side of the broad ,atlantic4 ,there is another attribute that belongs to the true ,american citizen--the recognition of ,christianity as the religion of our country4 ,webster1 our greatest expounder of constitutional law1 did not hesitate to declare that ,christianity--not ,methodist ,christianity1 not ,roman ,catholic ,christianity1 not ,presbyterian ,christianity--but ,christianity as taught by the four ,evangelists1 is the recognized religion of this land4 ,recognized how far8 ,so far that its ethics shall be embodied in our constitutional and statutory law2 so far that its teachings of the brotherhood of mankind shall be accepted2 so far that its lessons of fraternity1 equality1 justice2 and mercy shall be incorporated in the law of society4 ,those beautiful moralities that fell from the lips of the divine ,son of ,god have been incorporated in the laws of the land1 and that with few exceptions4 ,our chaplains for the army and navy and for ,congress are in recognition of this4 ,on that sacred book the oath of ,presidential responsibility is taken4 ,and this ,thanksgiving ,day1 appointed by the ,president1 is a monument of proof4 ,these point to ,christianity as the dominant religion of the land1 not to the exclusion of the ,jew1 not to the exclusion of the ,greek1 not to the exclusion of the ,mohammedan1 not to the exclusion of the ,brahmin1 but permeating society with its principles4 ,then1 citizens1 the danger which comes from this foreign population is to be met in this way1 first1 to hold that this country is for ,americans who are clothed with these seven attributes4 ,i do not exaggerate the danger when ,i remind you that there are great movements among the peoples of the earth1 as never before4 ,remember that the population of ,europe has increased twenty-seven millions from #ahgj to #ahhj1 and at this rate of increase ,europe can send to us two millions of immigrants a year for the next hundred years4 ,our foreign-born population is said to be seven millions1 and their children of the first generation would make fifteen millions4 ,in #ahhb immigration reached the enormous figure of eight hundred thousand1 and at the present rate of immigration it is said there will be in the year #aijj1 fourteen years from now1 nineteen millions of persons of foreign birth1 and with their children of the first generation there will be forty-three millions in this land of foreign born4 ,now the question1 and a serious one1 is1 ,who are those that come8 ,i have said some are noble1 some are true1 some are easily transformed into the ,typical ,american4 ,but then we are to remember that most of the foreigners who come here are twelve times as much disposed to crime as are the native stock4 ,our population of foreign extraction is sadly conspicuous in our criminal records4 ,this element constituted1 in #ahgj1 #bj per cent4 of the population of ,new ,england1 and furnished #ge per cent4 of the crime4 ,the ,howard ,society of ,london reports that #gd per cent4 of the ,irish discharged convicts have come to the ,united ,states4 ,i hold in my hand the annual rum bill of this country for the last year4 ,it is nine hundred millions of dollars6 ,i ask myself1 ,who drinks this rum8 ,native ,americans8 ,some6 ,laughter4 ,some drink a good deal4 ,renewed laughter4 ,but let us see the danger that comes to us from inebriety among our foreign population4 ,the wholesale dealers in liquor are estimated at sixty-five per cent4 foreign born1 and the brewers seventy-five per cent4 ,let us take ,philadelphia1 that old ,quaker city1 the ,city of ,brotherly ,love1 that city that seems to be par excellence the city of the world1 and here are the figures3 ,there were #h1jcd persons in the rum traffic1 and who were they8 ,chinamen1 #b2 ,jews1 #b2 ,italians1 #ah2 ,spaniards1 #adj2 ,welsh1 #afj2 ,french1 #bhe2 ,scotch1 #dig2 ,english1 #efh2 ,germans1 #b1agi2 ,irish1 #c1jda2 ,africans1 #bfe2 ,american1 #bje4 ,i suppose we will have to mix the ,africans with the ,americans1 and the total would be #dgj ,americans1 and then there were persons of unknown nationality in the rum traffic1 #fgb2 the sum total being #h1jcd4 ,of this number #c1fif were females1 but out of the #c1fif all were foreigners but one4 ,there was one ,american woman in the rum business1 and ,i blush for my country4 ,yet there were #a1ajd ,german women1 and #b1edh ,irish1 and of the whole number of the #h1jcd engaged in the liquor traffic of that city1 #f1dah had been arrested for some crime4 ,applause4 ,we are bound to look at these facts4 ,are we a nation of foreign drunkards8 ,then there is another danger--the tendency of emigrant colonization4 ,i suppose it is known to you that ,new ,mexico is in the hands of foreigners--in the hands of the ,catholic ,church4 ,it is also a fact of ,congressional report that #bj1eeg1jjj acres of land are in the possession of twenty-nine alien corporations and individuals1 an area greater than the whole of ,ireland4 ,i would have no part of this country subject to any church4 ,i would have no foreign language taught in the public schools to the exclusion of or in preference to the ,english language4 ,i would have no laws published in a foreign language1 whether for the ,french of ,louisiana or the ,germans of ,cincinnati4 ,loud applause4 ,i would utter my solemn protest1 and that in the hearing of all politicians1 especially those men who want to be ,presidents and can not be ,presidents1 and those who hope to be ere long--,i would utter my solemn protest to-day against what is known as the ,irish vote and the ,german vote4 ,applause4 ,we do not want any foreign vote4 ,down with the politician that would seek an ,irish vote or ,german vote4 ,great applause4 ,all we want here is an ,american vote4 ,i would not vote for any man for ,president who would stoop so low as to bid for the ,german vote or the ,irish vote4 ,continued applause4 ,the other safeguard is an extension of the term of residence required for naturalization4 ,some say make the term twenty-one years4 ,what is the term now8 ,five years4 ,i read from ,revised ,statutes1 section #bafe and #bagd1 that a person applying for citizenship must be a resident of the ,united ,states at least five years1 and one year within the ,state or ,territory wherein the application is made1 and that during that term 7,i wish ,i had all the judges here to-day7 and that during that term he is to give satisfactory assurance to the court that he has behaved as a man of good moral character1 attached to the principles of the ,constitution of the ,united ,states1 and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the same4 ,a man of good moral character6 what a sublime utterance1 and how infinite4 ,i would be glad to know what judge takes the pains1 when a hundred of these foreigners apply just on the eve of the election1 that they may qualify themselves to vote1 what judge inquires whether they are men of good moral character8 ,yet such is the provision of the law of the land4 ,we have assumed the authority to limit suffrage4 ,we say that women shall not vote1 which is a great mistake4 ,sensation4 ,you are not up to that4 ,laughter4 ,my wife is as competent to vote as ,i4 ,on all moral questions1 especially the temperance question1 ,i would trust the women ten times before ,i would the men4 ,it is an abuse of the very genius of our ,government to proscribe the ,chinese4 ,we say the negro may vote because his skin is black4 ,we say the ,dutchman1 the ,irishman1 the ,italian may vote1 because his skin ought to be white1 but the ,chinese can not vote because his skin is yellow4 ,the word white is used in the statute of limitation4 ,we say to the young ,american who graduates with the highest honors at eighteen1 you must wait three years longer before you can stand with the ,irishman with his brogans and the ,teuton with his lager and vote for the rulers of your native land4 ,i would have the term of naturalization extended1 some say till the foreigner has been here twenty-one years4 ,extend the term to ten years1 fifteen years4 ,say to all persons who come to this country from foreign lands1 that after #ahij they shall remain here fifteen years to become indoctrinated in our free institutions1 learn the seven attributes of the ,american citizen1 and then be prepared to love ,america for ,america's sake4 ,applause4 ,thus protected we can look forward to a glorious future1 and the eye of prophecy can sweep the horizon of a deathless hope4 ,look forward to the time when our place among the nations shall be the umpire of the world4 ,when ,england and ,germany and ,france shall refer their international questions to us for adjudication which otherwise would be adjusted on the field of carnage2 when we shall dictate to the world by moral suasion1 what shall be the rights of citizens and what shall be the duty of the ,government over them4 ,the proud position of my country looms up before me4 ,england may plant commercial colonies around the globe1 and so may ,germany and so may ,france1 but let it be the mission of this country to plant colonies of moral ideas wherever the sun shines1 and transform the political sentiments of the world until all men shall be recognized as created free and equal by the ,father ,almighty4 ,let this be our proud position4 ,then it shall never be said that the ocean was dug for ,america's grave1 that the winds were woven for her winding sheet1 that the mountains were reared for her tombstone4 ,but rather we shall live on1 and gifted with immortal youth1 ,america shall ascend the mountain tops of the oncoming centuries with the old flag in her hand1 symbol of universal liberty1 the light of whose stars shall blend their radiance with the dawn of the millennium4 ,,extracts ,,from ,,letters4 ,your sermon
