,,introduction4 ,banbury ,cakes1 and ,banbury ,cross1 with its favourite juvenile associations1 with the ,lady with bells on her toes1 having music wherever she goes1 are indissolubly connected with the early years not only of ourselves but many prior generations4 ,in fact1 the ,ancient ,cross has been rebuilt since the days1 when in ,drunken ,barnaby's ,journal1 we are made familiar with the puritan who hanged his cat on a ,monday for killing of a mouse on a ,sunday4 ,the quaint old town and its people are rapidly modernizing2 but they cling to the old traditions4 ,both in pictorial and legendary lore we have some ,banburies of another kind altogether1 viz41 ,banbury ,blocks1 or in plain ,english1 ,engraved ,woodcut ,blocks1 associated with the ,local ,chap ,books1 ,toy ,books1 and other ,histories1 for which this quaint old ,oxfordshire town is celebrated4 ,the faithful description of the ,blocks illustrating this volume has led to numerous descriptive digressions1 apparently irrelevant to the subject2 it was found however that in tracing out the former history and use of some of the ,bewick and other cuts contained in this volume1 that the ,literary1 ,artistic1 ,historical1 ,topographical1 ,typographical1 and ,antiquarian ,reminiscences connected with the early ,printing and ,engraving of ,banbury involved that of many other important towns and counties of ,great ,britain1 and also ,america4 ,a provincial publisher about the beginning of the present century would reflect more or less the modus operandi of each of his contemporaries in abridging or reproducing verbatim the immortal little chap books issued from the press of ,john ,newbury's ,toy ,book ,manufactory1 at the ,bible and ,sun 7a sign lately restored71 #fe1 ,saint ,paul's ,church intention of issuing a reprint of the first edition of ,goody ,two ,shoes1 but the intended volume was published by the firm at the corner1 ,griffith1 ,farren1 ,okenden1 and ,welsh1 now in the direct line of business descent from worthy and industrious ,john ,newbery3 ,carman1 ,harris1 ,grant and ,griffith4 ,mr4 ,charles ,welsh of the present firm has taken a warm interest in the ,antiquarian and ,historical ,associations of the ,newbery firm4 ,the premises have been lately rebuilt1 the ,sign and ,emblems adopted by ,newbery restored1 and ,c4 ,welsh has reprinted ,goody ,two ,shoes in facsimile1 since which there has been added to it a ,standard edition of ,goldsmith's ,works1 edited by ,mr4 ,gibbs4 ,i had the pleasure of making many researches respecting the old ,london publisher 7,goldsmith's friend71 ,john ,newbery1 respecting his ,lilliputian ,classics1 and ,i have been enabled to introduce several of the ,quarto early editions to the firm1 and have had great pleasure in writing and placing on record numerous facts and data1 since utilized in the very interesting ,life of ,john ,newbery1 a last century bookseller4 ,the connection of ,oliver ,goldsmith's name is indissolubly associated with the juvenile classics industriously issued by ,newbery4 ,dr4 ,johnson himself edited and prefaced several children's books which ,i have seen in the ,jupp and ,hugo ,collections4 ,the weary hours of adversity1 through which ,goldie passed at ,green ,arbour ,court1 top of ,break ,neck ,steps and ,turn ,again ,lane--,i remember them all well1 and the ,fleet prison walls too1 when ,i was a boy--and in refuge at ,canonbury ,tower1 near the village of ,islington1 these are the places where ,goldsmith wrote for children4 ,sir ,joshua ,reynolds tells how1 when he called on the poet at ,green ,arbour ,court1 he found the couplet3-- ,by sports like these are all their cares beguiled1 ,the sports of children satisfy the child4 see ,the ,traveller4 ,he was surrounded by children in this unsavoury neighbourhood1 where he had his humble domicile3 a woodcut in ,lumburd's ,mirror depicts it very correctly4 ,bishop ,percy1 author of the ,reliques1 called on him1 and during the interview the oft repeated incident occurred of a little child of an adjacent neighbour1 ,would ,mr4 ,goldsmith oblige her mother with a chamber pot full of coals6 ,truly these were hours of ill-at-ease4 ,the largest collection of the various relics of woodcuts used in the chap book literature1 printed for the ,company of ,flying ,stationers1 also ,walking ,stationers1--for such is a portion of the imprint to be found on several of the early ,chap ,books printed at ,banbury--is to be seen in the ,library of the ,british ,museum2 but the richest collection of these celebrated little rarities of ,toy ,books is in the venerable ,bodleian ,library4 ,among the very interesting block relics of the past are the pretty cuts to ,mrs4 ,trimmer's ,fabulous ,histories1 or ,the ,robins3 these were designed by ,thomas ,bewick1 and engraved by ,john ,thompson1 his pupil1 who enriched ,whittingham's celebrated ,chiswick ,press with his fine and tasteful work4 ,a numerous series of little fable cuts by the same artist are to be found in this volume4 ,one of the quaintest sets engraved at an early period by ,john ,bewick 7the ,hogarth of ,newcastle71 are to ,the ,hermit1 or ,adventures of ,edward ,dorrington1 or ,philip ,quarll1 as it was most popularly known by that title a century ago4 ,the earliest edition ,i have seen of ,philip ,quarll is as follows3 ,the ,hermit1 or the unparalleled sufferings and surprising adventures of ,mr4 ,philip ,quarll1 an ,englishman who was lately discovered by ,mr4 ,dorrington1 a ,bristol merchant1 upon an uninhabited vignette on title as illustrations4 ,the quaint old cuts on next page probably illustrated an early ,newcastle1 then ,york1 and finally ,banbury1 edition of this oft published work4 ,the ,blocks was ,sole ,printer to ,king ,william1 for the five ,northern ,counties of ,england4 ,he entered into partnership with ,thomas ,saint1 who on the death of ,john ,white1 at their ,printing ,office in ,pilgrim ,street1 succeeded in #agif to his extensive business as ,printer1 ,bookseller1 and ,publisher4 ,in this stock of woodcuts were some of the veritable pieces of wood engraved1 or cut for ,caxton1 ,wynken de ,worde1 ,pynson1 and others down to ,tommy ,gent--the curious genius1 historian1 author1 poet1 woodcuter and engraver1 binder and printer1 of ,york4 ,we give some early examples out of this stock4 ,thomas ,saint1 about #aggj1 had the honour of introducing to the public1 the brothers ,thomas and ,john ,bewick's first efforts in wood-engravings1 early and crude as they undoubtedly were4 ,they are to be found in ,hutton ,on ,mensuration1 and also in various children's and juvenile works1 such as sop's and ,gay's ,fables4 ,we give some of the earliest known of their work in this very interesting collection of woodcuts4 ,some years ago a collection was formed of ,newbury and ,marshall's ,children's ,gift ,toy ,books1 and early educational works1 which were placed in the ,south ,kensington ,museum1 in several glass cases4 ,these attracted other collections of rare little volumes1 adorned with similar cuts1 many of which are from the identical blocks here impressed1 notably the ,cries of ,york1 ,goody ,two ,shoes1 etc4 ,they are still on view1 near the ,george ,cruikshank collection1 and during the twenty years they have been exhibited1 such literature has steadily gone up to fancy prices4 ,charles ,knight in his ,shadows of the ,old ,booksellers1 says of ,newbury1 7pp4 #bcc71 ,this old bookseller is a very old friend of mine4 ,he wound himself round my heart some seventy years ago1 when ,i became possessed of an immortal volume1 entitled the history of ',little ,goody ,shoes4' ,i felt myself personally honoured in the dedication4 ,he then refers to ,dr4 ,primrose1 ,thomas ,trip1 etc41 and adds further on1 my father had a drawer full of them ,newbury's little books very smartly bound in gilt paper4 ,priceless now would this collection be1 mixed up with horn-books--a single copy of which is one of the rarest relics of the olden time4 ,chalmer's in his preface to ,idler1 regards ,mr4 ,newbury as the reputed author of many little chap books for masters and misses4 ,mr4 ,john ,nichols brings forward other candidates for the honour of projecting and writing the ,lilliputian histories1 of ,goody ,two ,shoes1 etc42 and refers to ,griffith ,jones and ,giles ,jones1 in conjunction with ,mr4 ,john ,newbury1 as those to whom the public are indebted for the origin of those numerous and popular little books for the amusement and instruction of children1 which have ever since been received with universal approbation4 ,the following are two of the identical cuts engraved by ,john ,bewick1 and used in the ,newbury editions of ,goody ,two ,shoes1 ,london1 #agfi to #agga4 ,illustrations3 #ba1 #bb ,it will be seen on contrasting these cuts with the other two1 on the following page1 from early ,york editions1 how wonderfully even in his early years ,bewick improved the illustrated juvenile literature of his day4 ,no wonder when ,goldsmith the poet had an interview with ,bewick1 that delighted with his cuts1 he confessed to writing ,goody ,two ,shoes1 ,tommy ,trip1 etc4 ,bewick's daughter supplied this information4 ,illustrations3 #ca - #cc ,early cuts to ,goody ,two ,shoes4 ,bewick's frontispiece to ,goody ,two will find interesting examples of the earliest woodcut blocks illustrating the quaint and rare tomes issued by the ,almonry1 ,westminster1 also at ,oxford4 ,the ,robin ,hood ,garland blocks 7circa #afhj or earlier71 is one of the earliest provincial blocks with a distinct history4 ,we can trace them in varied collections used by early ,london and ,provincial printers1 and in the ,london ,bridge printed ,chap ,book ,literature4 ,sutton1 printer of ,nottingham1 issued a curious quarto volume of old woodcuts4 ,he was descended from the celebrated ,t4 ,sutton1 who founded the ,charterhouse4 ,some twenty-five years ago ,i went over the very quaint collection with the proprietor1 and suggested a volume being issued1 but the idea had already been matured by him4 ,robert ,white1 the poet and local historian of ,newcastle upon ,tyne--by whose favour ,i reprinted ,tommy ,trip in #ahfg--;has one of the choicest1 most comprehensive1 and rarest libraries of local stories1 garlands1 ballads1 and chap books1 and ,north country folk-lore children's books1 almanacks1 primers1 ,a4 ,b4 ,c41 horn books1 battledores1 etc41 that were ever gathered together4 ,i am glad to place on record1 that by his will1 his collection will remain intact4 ,the special opportunities afforded him at the time for collecting them have entirely passed away4 ,i believe he was descended from ,john ,white1 printer for the five northern counties of ,england to ,king ,william4 ,this is referred to by ,mr4 ,dodd in his preface to a quarto volume of woodcut impressions4 ,william ,dodd fully appreciated the local interest1 by producing a limited impression of the quaint blocks in his possession4 ,the ,rev4 ,mr4 ,hugo had a very large and important collection of blocks and books1 and at his death ,i arranged and catalogued them for ,messrs4 ,sotheby1 according to the wish of his widow4 ,the ,rev4 gentleman had wished his collection to be purchased by the trustees of the ,british ,museum1 but some little hitch occurred and this was not accomplished4 ,in his collection the ,robin ,hood block1 perforated with worm holes1 realized quite a fancy price4 ,among the relics of ancient woodcutting1 are some so early and crude in their execution--quaint as the period they illustrate--as to really entitle them to the literal name and meaning of woodcuts1 rather than wood-engravings1 which they really became in the hands of the two ,bewicks and their numerous school of pupils4 ,other provincial publishers were not so favoured as those at ,newcastle-on-,tyne1 as to have a ,bewick trying his prentice hand on similar series1 as used by ,j4 ,bell and others4 ,the ,cock ,robin blocks in this collection are certainly the earliest series ,i have seen among the thousands ,i have examined4 ,the ,york ,cries1 ,tom ,hickethrift1 ,jack the ,giant ,killer1 and many kindred cuts1 are evidently from the collection of ,john ,white1 the early printer1 and are as quaint1 as funny and droll in crudity of execution1 as any of ,thomas ,gent's1 the unique ,york engraver and bookseller4 ,the rarity and interest of a collection like the present1 with their varied associations1 may be fairly estimated when we consider that the country printers in those days were not particular in making the same woodcut do duty in most incongrous and inapplicable positions and subjects4 ,we have met with a block in a child's book1 then the identical woodcut on a ballad1 catchpenny1 or last dying speech and confession1 setting at defiance any suitability of illustration1 or adaptability to the text matter4 ,of course now1 some of these examples are exceedingly ludicrous1 and do not fail to excite merriment1 and often add to the intrinsic value of the article1 as may be judged by numerous examples that have occurred in our literary auction marts during the last half century4 ,besides it must be taken fair notice of that a genuine wood-engraving1 or woodcut block may soon become a curiosity of the past1 owing to the improved methods of illustrating children's books4 ,many of ,bewick's blocks are veritable paintings on boxwood1 and are as much classical works of art as work by ,josiah ,wedgwood1 and his able coadjutor1 ,j4 ,flaxman are in ,fine ,art4 ,these early crude1 quaint1 droll little pioneer wood blocks will ever remain of great and even historical interest as showing the progress and influence on the illustrated literature of the civilized world4 ,many of our readers have heard of ,banbury ,cross and ,banbury cakes1 and other famous juvenile associations1 as the lady with bells on her toes1 but it was also connected with the production of books for juvenile readers4 ,a great portion of the blocks in this volume are ,banbury blocks used for illustrating the toy books1 children's histories1 etc41 for which this quaint old ,oxfordshire town was famous4 ,many of them are connected with the early printing and engraving carried on in this and other towns of ,england4 ,a quantity of the blocks were used in the books printed by ,john ,white of ,york1 who established himself1 as before mentioned1 as a printer in ,newcastle-on-,tyne1 bringing with him a stock of quaint old blocks formerly his father's at ,york1 where he was sole printer to ,king ,william1 for the five northern counties of ,england4 ,boswell has recorded several conversations of ,oliver ,goldsmith with ,dr4 ,johnson1 in which the warm-hearted poet expressed a wish1 to make fishes1 animals1 birds1 etc41 talk1 or appear so to do1 for the amusement and instruction of children4 ,in the ,national ,collection is ,the ,valentine's ,gift1 or a ,plan to enable children of all sizes and denomination to behave with honour1 integrity1 and humanity1 very necessary to a trading nation3 to which is added some account of ,old ,zigzag1 and of the ,horn with which he used to understand the language of birds1 beasts1 fishes and insects1 etc41 ,printed for ,francis ,power1 7grandson to the late ,mr4 ,j4 impression is given1 from ,dyche's ,spelling ,book3 an exceedingly clean1 choice and crisp copy of this book1 in the original sheep covers1--a veritable old shopkeeper1 which for nearly a century had escaped its intended destiny in ,rusher's varied stores1 at length found a resting place in ,sir ,thomas ,bodley's venerable receptacle for bibliographical treasures in the ,bodelian1 ,oxford4 ,the present example--a portion of which was broken away many years ago1--is probably the sole surviving one of the quaint series of cuts1 doubtless admired by our great-grand-parents over #ajj years ago4 or ,running ,stationer1 designed by ,cruikshank and engraved by ,branston4 7,used in ,york ,cries74 ,illustrations3 #eia1 #eib ,banbury ,old ,church4 ,a ,gentleman wrote to one of the newspapers some time ago1 detailing a curious incident that happened to himself1 showing how these very interesting prints and blocks are being scattered and destroyed4 ,he says ,in the old days when ,catnach was ,king of the ballad world1 boys used to steal the woodblocks of ,mr4 ,bewick the wood-cutter1 and sell them to the great song singer4 ,yesterday1 for a halfpenny1 ,i picked up in a bye street in ,london one of the prints of a very beautiful block of this kind heading a song called ',the ,wealthy ,farmer's ,son4' ,i wonder whether anybody has ever thought it worth while to collect these pictures4 ,this interesting pursuit of collecting and illustrating with extra cuts1 pages of child book literature of the #agth1 #ahth1 and early #aith century1 would indeed be a charming recreation4 ,on this subject there appeared a long article in the ,graphic1 where the writer says1 under the initials ',c4 ,h41' ,there are few more agreeable occupations for anyone who has sufficient leisure at his disposal1 than that of embellishing a favourite book with illustrations appropriate to the subject1 and thereby endowing it with additional interest and value4 ,to those who cultivate this fascinating pursuit with taste and intelligence1 there are two indispensible conditions of success4 ,the task of collecting the materials is a labour of love1 and every fresh discovery in some out-of-the-way corner1 of a long-sought desideratum1 a delight which the patience and industrious enthusiast alone can appreciate4 ,then follows much genial advice on tasteful and judicious collecting1 and how to illustrate4 ,in the present case the interest and value could only be realized or conceived on the completion of a choice collection of extra cuts1 and cuttings of articles1 portraits1 views1 autograph letters1 etc41 carefully mounted on cartridge paper1 paged to correspond with the text1 and then handed to a judicious binder--this is a very important item--who would carefully encase it1 and make it form a select and an exceptionibly valuable addition to the library4 ,illustration3 #fja ,the ,banbury ,bellman4 ,illustrations3 #fjb1 #fjc ,tradesmen' ,shops in unworthy of adoption--which by the way the few large paper copies of this book are admirably adopted--we give a short list of those who have collected and treasured with care these little brochures4 ,in the ,south ,kensington ,museum on exhibition1 is a collection of ,horn ,books and ,battledores1 exhibited by ,kenneth1 ,r4 ,h4 ,mackenzie1 ,esq41 ,f4,s4,a41 who read a paper on this subject before the ,society of ,antiquaries4 ,there is another collection which includes many curious ,horn ,books or ,battledores1 from circa #agej1 #aghd1 #ahjj to #ahaj1 including photo and facsimiles of one of the ,middleton ,horn ,books now in the ,bateman ,museum4 ,there is also a curious poem on the ,horn ,book by a ,gent4 suffering from the gout1 printed at ,dublin by ,t4 ,cowan1 #agbh1 small #dto1 only a few leaves4 ,another very neat ,horn ,book with the ,horn in front1 hence its name1 is also on view4 ,the scarcity of these quaint early educational books may be understood from the fact that ,mr4 ,hone1 author of the ,every ,day ,book1 etc41 sought for an original ,horn ,book for years without success4 ,mr4 ,coleridge had one or two cases on exhibition1 with numerous examples of ,newbury and ,marshall's little books1 but we believe these are withdrawn4 ,there is also a selection of early educational books2 but the largest collection formed is still on exhibition4 ,in conclusion1 it may be said that the present volume contains many precious relics of the ,bewick1 ,newbury1 ,goldsmith1 ,newcastle ,york1 ,banbury1 ,coventry1 and ,catnach presses1 and a representative collection of the stock of workable woodcuts of a provincial printer in the latter part of the #ahth century1 and to those who would like to inspect the rentable copies of those valuable and interesting little books1 and some of the original ,horn ,books1 etc41 let them see the ,coleridge1 ,kenneth ,mackenzie1 and ,pearson collections in the ,south ,kensington ,museum4 ,illustrations3 #fba1 #fbb ,rustic ,cottages collection of wood engravings by ,bewick1 ,clennell1 and others1 which with some newspaper cuttings made quite a dainty extra illustrated volume4 ,if so eminent an artist could find pleasure and recreation in this pursuit1 others may certainly rely upon finding it equally attractive1 but he would have found his task much easier if he had had a large paper copy of this work interleaved4 ,this
