lived in that happy place with ,god4 ,then ,god made the world4 ,he told the hills to come up out of the earth1 and the seas to run down into the deep places which ,he had made for them4 ,he made the grass1 the trees1 and all the pretty flowers4 ,he put the sun1 the moon1 and the stars in the sky4 ,he filled the water with swimming fish1 the air with flying birds1 and the dry land with walking and creeping animals4 ,and then ,he said1 ',let ,us make man4' ,who were meant by ',us'8 ,who was with ,god when ,he made the world8 ,it was ,jesus4 ,the ,bible says3 ',,the ,,word 7that means ,jesus7 ,,was ,,with ,,god1 ,,and ,,the ,,word ,,was ,,god4 ,,the ,,same ,,was ,,in ,,the ,,beginning ,,with ,,god4 ,,all ,,things ,,were ,,made ,,by ,,him4' ,so after ,he had made everything else1 ,god made a man1 and named him ,adam4 ,god put ,adam into the beautiful ,garden of ,eden1 and at first he was good and very happy4 ,god also made a woman1 named ,eve1 to be his wife1 and to help him to take care of the garden4 ,all the fruit in the garden1 except what grew on one tree1 was given to ,adam and ,eve to eat2 all the animals were their servants2 and ,god was their ,friend4 ,a wicked angel1 who had been turned out of heaven1 saw how happy ,adam and ,eve were1 and he was angry1 and thought1 ',i will make them as bad and unhappy as ,i am2 ,i will make them do what ,god has told them not to do4 ,then he will turn them out of ,eden1 and they and their children will be my servants for ever1 and ,i shall be king of the world4' ,so the wicked angel1 whose name was ,satan1 came into ,eden4 ,he got ,adam and ,eve to take the fruit which ,god had told them not to eat1 and ,god had to send them out of the beautiful garden2 for ,god had said ,he would punish ,adam and ,eve if they took that fruit1 and ,god always keeps ,his word4 ,but ,god went on loving ,adam and ,eve even when ,he knew that ,he must punish them1 and ,he tried to make them good in this way4 ,he thought1 ',i will send ,my dear ,son down to the earth4 ,he shall become a little child1 and grow up to be a man1 and shall die for the sins of the world4' ,hundreds and hundreds of years passed away before ,jesus came4 ,but a great many of the people who lived in ,palestine were expecting ,him4 ,god had said that when ,jesus came1 ,he would be a ,jew4 ,the ,jews were very proud about that4 ,they often talked about the coming of ,jesus4 ,when they talked about ,him1 they called ,him the ,messiah4 ,just before ,jesus was born1 the ,jews were very unhappy4 ,roman soldiers had been fighting with them1 and had conquered them1 and made them servants of the great ,roman king4 ,he was called ,augustus ,caesar1 and he gave the ,jews another king called ,herod4 ,he was very wicked4 ,illustration3 ,map of ,palestine at the time of ,christ4 ,the ,jews longed to get rid of ,herod1 and many of them thought1 ',it will be all right when the ,messiah comes4 ,the ,messiah will fight against the ,romans2 ,he will drive them away from our land2 and then ,he will be our ,king instead of that wicked ,herod4' ,but only a few ,jews remembered that ,jesus was coming to fight against ,satan and against sin4 ,the place where the ,jews lived had four or five names4 ,it was called the ,land of ,canaan at the first1 then the ,land of ,promise1 and then the ,land of ,israel4 ,but we call it the ,holy ,land1 or ,palestine4 ,if you look at the map of ,palestine1 you will see a river running from the north of ,palestine to the south4 ,that river is called the ,jordan4 ,and ,palestine is divided into four parts1--one at the top 7we call that the north71 one at the bottom 7we call that the south71 one in the middle1 and one on the other or eastward side of the ,jordan4 ,the part in the ,north is called ,galilee4 ,the part in the south is called ,judaea4 ,the part in the middle is called ,samaria4 ,the part on the other side of the ,jordan is called ,perea4 ,palestine is full of hills1 with great holes1 called caves1 in their sides4 ,palestine is not very big2 ,england is about six times1 and ,new ,york ,state about five times larger4 ,washington is called the capital of the ,united ,states4 ,the capital of ,palestine was ,jerusalem4 ,jerusalem was a very beautiful city4 ,it was built on four or five hills which were very close together4 ,one of these hills was called ,mount ,moriah4 ,on the top of ,mount ,moriah there was a great ,temple where the ,jews went to pray4 ,part of the ,temple was called the ,holy ,place1 the part at the very top of the mountain4 ,it was splendid with its shining gold and white marble1 but it was not very large1 for the people were not allowed to go into it4 ,when it was time for the ,jews to go to the ,temple1 silver trumpets were blown once1 twice1 three times1 and then the gates were thrown open1 and the people crowded into the courts4 ,,chapter ,,ii ,,jesus ,,is ,,born ,,in ,,bethlehem ,mary1 the mother of ,jesus1 lived in the little town of ,nazareth1 among the hills of ,galilee4 ,she was going to be married to a carpenter called ,joseph1 who1 like herself1 lived in ,nazareth4 ,one day ,god sent the angel ,gabriel to ,mary with a message4 ,mary1 when she saw and heard the angel1 was a little frightened4 ,but the angel told her he had some glad news for her4 ,jesus1 the ,son of ,god1 the ,messiah1 was coming into the world very soon1 and ,he was to come in the form of a baby1 as ,mary's little child4 ,and ,gabriel said that when ,he was born1 ,mary must call ,him ,,jesus4 ,mary had a cousin named ,elizabeth1 who lived more than a hundred miles away from ,nazareth1 and ,mary longed to talk with her about all these wonderful things4 ,so she got ready for a long journey1 and went off into the hill country of ,judaea to see ,elizabeth4 ,and ,god had also promised to send ,elizabeth a son4 ,and soon after ,mary's visit the baby was born1 and all ,elizabeth's friends were glad1 and came to see her1 and to thank ,god with her for ,his great kindness4 ,the little ,jew babies have a name given to them when they are eight days old4 ,and ,elizabeth's son was named ,john4 ,one night1 soon after ,mary got back from her cousin ,elizabeth's house1 the angel of the ,lord spoke to ,joseph in a dream4 ,the angel told ,joseph to marry ,mary1 and he told him ,mary's secret about the ,son of ,god coming to earth as her little child1 and he said to ,joseph1 ',,thou ,,shalt ,,call ,,his ,,name ,,jesus1 ,,fob ,,he ,,shall ,,save ,,his ,,people ,,from ,,their ,,sins4' ,when ,joseph woke up1 his first thought was to do what the angel had told him1 and he at once took ,mary to his own home as his wife4 ,about this time ,caesar ,augustus1 the great ,emperor at ,rome1 sent word to ,herod that he was to take a census of the ,jews4 ,everybody's name had to be written down and his age1 and many other things about him4 ,every twenty years ,augustus had a census taken1 so that he might know how much money the ,jews ought to pay him1 and how many ,jew soldiers he ought to have4 ,in ,palestine1 at census time1 people had to go to the towns where their fathers' fathers lived a long time ago1 and had to have their names put down there instead of having them put down in their own homes4 ,now1 both ,joseph and ,mary belonged to the family of the great king ,david1 who was born in ,bethlehem4 ,so ,mary had to prepare for a long journey1 and go with her husband to ,bethlehem4 ,bethlehem is six miles from ,jerusalem4 ,it is on the top of a hill1 and people have to climb up a steep road to get into the town4 ,an inn is a large house that people stay at when they are on a journey4 ,the inns in ,palestine have four walls1 with a door in front1 and with a great empty space for camels and horses inside4 ,in the middle of the empty space is a fountain2 and all round the walls1 a little bit higher than the part where the animals are1 there are a number of places like empty stone arbors4 ,these empty places are called leewans1 and they are open in front1 so that everybody can see into them4 ,yet ,mary and ,joseph1 after all their long journey from ,nazareth1 could not find even an empty leewan to lie down in4 ,illustration3 ,the shepherd's care4 ,near that inn there was a place in which asses and camels were kept4 ,it was perhaps a cave in the side of the hill4 ,and because there was no room for them in the inn1 ,mary and ,joseph had to go into that stable to sleep1 and in that stable ,jesus ,christ was born4 ,mary wrapped ,him in swaddling clothes1 and laid ,him in the manger in the place where the animals' food was kept4 ,on the hill where ,bethlehem stands there are green places where shepherds feed their flocks4 ,there are wild animals in ,palestine2 and all night long the shepherds of ,bethlehem watched to see that no harm happened to their sheep4 ,one night an angel of the ,lord stood by them and a bright light shown round about them4 ,the shepherds were afraid2 but the angel said1 ',,fear ,,not2 ,,for ,,behold1 ,i ,,bring ,,you ,,good ,,tidings 7,,or ,,news7 ,,of ,,great ,,joy1 ,,which ,,shall ,,be ,,to ,,all ,,people4 ,,for ,,unto ,,you ,,is ,,born ,,this ,,day ,,in ,,the ,,city ,,of ,,david ,a ,,saviour1 ,,which is ,,christ ,,the ,,lord4' ,and suddenly there was seen with the angel a number of the angels of heaven4 ,and they praised ,god1 and said1 ',,glory ,,to ,,god ,,in ,,the ,,highest1 ,,and ,,on ,,earth ,,peace1 ,,good ,,will ,,toward ,,men4' ,when the light faded1 and the song ended1 and the angels had gone back into heaven1 the shepherds climbed quickly over the hillside to ,bethlehem4 ,and there1 in the stable near the inn1 they found ,mary and ,joseph1 and the ,babe lying in the manger1 as the angels had said4 ,jesus was the eldest son of ,his mother4 ,and the eldest sons in ,jewish houses1 when they were forty days old1 were taken to the ,temple1 and given to ,god4 ,so now1 when ,jesus was nearly six weeks old1 ,he was brought from ,bethlehem by ,mary and ,joseph to the ,temple at ,jerusalem4 ,the mothers used to take a lamb with them1 or two pigeons1 as a sacrifice to ,god4 ,mary took two pigeons4 ,she was not rich enough to buy a lamb4 ,a long way on the eastern side of the ,jordan1 there were countries where the people used to watch the sun and the moon and the stars very carefully4 ,if they saw anything new and strange in the heavens1 they thought it meant that something wonderful was going to happen4 ,but some of them knew and had heard from the ,jews about ,god1 and about the ,messiah who was coming2 and they1 like the ,jews1 were longing for ,jesus4 ,one day these wise men saw a bright star which they had never seen before4 ,and as they looked at it they felt sure that a great ,king of the ,jews had been born in ,judaea4 ,so they took camels and rich presents of gold and sweet-smelling stuff--such as people gave to kings in those days--and they loaded their camels1 and left their homes1 and rode for many weeks till they came to ,jerusalem4 ,and when they got there they said1 ',where is ,he that is born ,king of the ,jews8 for we have seen ,his star in the east1 and are come to worship ,him4' ,illustration3 ,bethlehem4 ,when ,herod heard about these wise men he was troubled4 ,he sent for the best priests1 and other clever men1 and asked them where ,christ would be born4 ,and they said to him1 ',in ,bethlehem of ,judaea4' ,they had read that in the ,bible4 ,then ,herod said to the wise men1 ',go and search out carefully about the young ,child2 and when ye have found ,him1 bring me word1 that ,i also may come and worship ,him4' ,when the wise men had heard the king1 they went away to ,bethlehem1 and lo1 the star went before them1 till it came and stood over where the young ,child was4 ,and they rejoiced with great joy4 ,and when they were come into the house 7there was room in the inn now7 they saw the young ,child with ,mary1 ,his mother1 and they fell down and worshipped ,him1 and they gave ,him their presents--gold1 and frankincense1 and myrrh4 ,but the wise men did not go back to ,herod4 ,god told them in a dream not to go4 ,so they went home by another way instead4 ,after the wise men were gone1 the angel of the ,lord came to ,joseph in his sleep1 and said to him1 ',arise1 and take the young ,child and ,his mother1 and flee into ,egypt1 and be thou there until ,i bring thee word3 for ,herod will seek the young ,child to destroy ,him4' ,that meant to kill ,him4 ,so ,joseph at once got up1 and took the young ,child and ,his mother by night1 and went away to ,egypt4 ,when ,herod found that the wise men did not come back1 he was very angry1 and he sent his soldiers to ,bethlehem1 and had all the baby boys killed--all the children who were less than two years of age4 ,and they killed all the baby boys in the places near ,bethlehem as well4 ,and the poor mothers cried1 and nobody could comfort them4 ,joseph and ,mary stayed in ,egypt1 waiting for the angel to bring them word that it was time to go back again to ,palestine4 ,and one night1 when ,jesus was about three years old1 the message came4 ,the angel of the ,lord said to ,joseph in a dream1 ',arise1 and take the young ,child and ,his mother1 and go into the land of ,israel3 for they are dead which sought the young ,child's life4' ,joseph got up1 and took the young ,child and ,his mother1 and went into the land of ,israel4 ,but when he came there1 people said to him1 ',herod is dead1 but his son ,archelaus is king4' ,and when ,joseph knew that ,archelaus was king1 he was afraid to stay in ,judaea4 ,and ,god spoke to him again in a dream1 and told him to go back to ,galilee4 ,so ,joseph and ,mary went back to ,galilee1 and lived in ,nazareth again4 ,,chapter ,,iii ,,the ,,boyhood ,,of ,,jesus ,the ,bible tells us only a few stories about the time when ,jesus was a little boy4 ,nazareth is built up the side of a hill1 and there are plenty of gardens and fields down below4 ,amongst these fields there is a fountain1 where the women of ,nazareth go to fetch water4 ,jesus must often have gone with ,his mother to that fountain2 and sometimes1 when she was tired1 ,he may have fetched the water for her ,himself4 ,illustration3 ,nazareth1 from hill above4 ,mary wore a long blue dress1 tied round the waist1 and a cap with pieces of money sewn round it1 and a white cloth over her head and shoulders1 just as the women of ,nazareth do now2 and ,jesus was very likely dressed in a red cap1 a bright tunic1 a sash of many colours1 and a little jacket of white or blue1 just as the boys of ,nazareth are dressed now4 ,the houses of ,nazareth are white4 ,grape vines grow over their walls1 and doves sit and coo on the flat roofs4 ,there is not much inside the houses3 sometimes they have only one room4 ,there is a lamp in the middle of the room1 and round the walls there are waterpots4 ,there are bright-coloured quilts on a shelf4 ,people unroll these quilts at night and lie down upon them4 ,there are mats and carpets in the house1 and a bright-coloured box with treasures in it1 and a painted wooden stool2 and that is nearly all4 ,illustration3 ,jewish women grinding corn4 ,when the people of the house want to eat1 they put a tray of food on the wooden stool1 and they sit round the tray on the floor1 and eat with their hands4 ,people in ,palestine would not know what to do with tables and chairs1 and knives and forks1 like ours4 ,the streets of ,nazareth are long and narrow1 and they are full of chickens and dogs1 of donkeys and camels1 of blind beggars and children4 ,there are little shops by the side of the streets1 something like the leewans in the inn which ,i told you about4 ,but the tailors1 the shoemakers1 the carpenters1 and the coffee-grinders do not always sit in their shops4 ,they like to sit on the ground outside1 and do their work in the street2 and the sellers of dates and of figs1 beans1 barley1 oranges1 and other things1 sit down in the street to sell their goods4 ,joseph1 ,mary's husband1 was a carpenter1 and ,jesus became a carpenter1 and often came out of the little shop and sat on the ground with plane1 hammer1 glue1 and saw1 and worked away in the narrow street1 just as the carpenters of ,nazareth do now4 ,when the ,jewish boys were twelve years old1 they were called ',sons of the ,law1' and they were taken to ,jerusalem for the ,passover4 ,when ,jesus was twelve years old1 ,joseph and ,his mother took ,him up with them to the ,passover4 ,when the week was over1 ,mary and ,joseph started for the journey back to ,nazareth4 ,but ,jesus stayed behind in ,jerusalem4 ,thousands of people must have been leaving ,jerusalem just at the very time that ,mary and ,joseph went away4 ,so when ,mary and ,joseph did not see ,jesus in the crush1 they did not at first feel frightened4 ,they thought1 ',we shall find ,him soon with some of our friends4' ,all day long they kept on looking for ,him in the crowd1 but they did not see ,him4 ,and at last they went back again to ,jerusalem looking for ,him4 ,next day they found ,him in one of the courts of the ,temple4 ,several ,rabbis were there1 and everyone who saw and heard ,him was astonished4 ,they asked ,him questions too1 and ,he answered them wisely and well4 ,nobody could understand how a young boy could be so wise4 ,when ,mary and ,joseph saw ,jesus sitting here1 with ,rabbis coming all around ,him1 they were greatly surprised4 ,but ,his mother asked ,him why ,he had stayed behind1 and said1 ',thy father and ,i have sought ,thee sorrowing4' ,jesus said to ,his mother1 ',,how ,,is ,,it ,,that ,,ye ,,have ,,sought ,,me8 ,,wist ,,ye ,,not 7,,did ,,you ,,not ,,know7 ,,that ,i ,,must ,,be ,,about ,,my ,,father',s ,,business8' ,and now ,he went back with her and with ,joseph to ,nazareth1 and obeyed them1 exactly as ,he always had done4 ,we do not know much more about ,jesus when ,he was a boy4 ,but we do know that as ,he grew taller1 ,he 'increased in wisdom and stature1 and in favour with ,god and man4' ,,chapter ,,iv ,,john ,,the ,,baptist ,you remember about the child that was called ,john4 ,zacharias1 his father1 and ,elisabeth gave ,john to ,god directly he was born4 ,they never cut his hair1 and they never let him drink wine1 or eat grapes1 or eat raisins4 ,that was the way they did in those days to show that he belonged to ,god4 ,when ,john was old enough to understand1 he gave himself to ,god4 ,and as he grew older1 he made up his mind that he would leave his home and friends1 and go and live in the wilderness2 and his food there was locusts and wild honey4 ,locusts are like large grasshoppers1 and poor people in the ,east often eat them4 ,they taste like shrimps1 but are not so nice4 ,god had said that ,john should go before the ,messiah to prepare the way for ,him--to get people's hearts ready for the ,saviour4 ,and when ,john was in the wilderness1 ,god told him to begin his work4 ,so ,john went down from the wild hills of ,judaea to the ,river ,jordan1 and he began to preach to everyone who passed by4 ,there were many people passing by1 for he went to the place where people crossed the ,jordan4 ,illustration3 ,the ,river ,jordan4 ,john said1 ,,repent6' 7that means1 ',be really sorry for your sins'71 ',,for ,,the ,,kingdom ,,of ,,heaven is ,,at ,,hand4' ,a very great many people went from ,jerusalem1 and out of all the land of ,judaea1 on purpose to hear ,john preaching4 ,and when they had heard him1 some of them said to him1 ',what shall we do then8' ,and ,john told them that they were to be kind to one another2 that they were to give food to the hungry and clothing to the naked4 ,some even of the proud ,rabbis came down to the ,jordan to ,john1 and ,john told these ,rabbis that they must not be proud because they were ,jews1 but must try to be good really and truly4 ,a great many of the people who heard ,john preach felt sorry for the things they had done1 and they told ,john how sorry they were1 and ,john baptized them in the ,river ,jordan4 ,john told the people that he could only baptize their bodies with water1 but that some one else was coming who would be able to baptize their hearts with the ,holy ,spirit4 ,this was ,jesus4 ,illustration3 ,jericho1 from plains above4 ,after ,john had baptized a great many persons1 he saw coming to him1 one day1 for baptism1 a ,man about thirty years old2 and when ,john looked at ,him1 he saw that ,he was quite different from all the people who had been to him before4 ,it was ,jesus who had come to be baptized before ,he began ,his work4 ,he wanted to obey ,god in everything2 and ,he wanted to show that ,he was the ,brother and ,friend of all the people whom ,john had been baptizing4 ,and so1 as ,jesus wished it1 ,john went into the ,river ,jordan with ,him and baptized ,him4 ,when ,jesus had been baptized1 and was full of the ,holy ,spirit1 ,he went away into a wilderness4 ,and there1 when ,jesus was tired and hungry1 ,satan came to ,him--just as he came to ,adam and ,eve in the ,garden of ,eden--to tempt ,him4 ,to tempt means to try4 ,mother tries you sometimes1 to see whether you can be trusted2 and ,god tries us all sometimes4 ,but if ,god tries us1 it is to make us better2 and if ,satan tries us1 it is to make us worse4 ,every time that ,jesus was tempted1 ,he said1 ',it is written1' and then ,he told ,satan something 'which was written in the ,bible4 ,that is the very best way to fight ,satan4 ,the ,bible is called 'the ,sword of the ,spirit1' and ,satan is afraid when he sees us using that ,sword4 ,let us ask ,god to fill us1 like ,jesus1 with the ,holy ,spirit1 and then we shall soon learn how to use the ,sword of the ,spirit1 and we too shall be able to drive ,satan away when he comes to tempt us4 ,only we must be sure to read the ,bible1 as ,jesus used to do1 or else we shall never be able to drive ,satan away by telling him the things that ,god has written there4 ,,chapter ,v ,,jesus ,,begins ,,his ,,work ,one day1 when the fight of ,jesus with the devil in the wilderness was over1 ,he came to ,bethabara1 where ,john was baptizing1 and when ,john saw ,jesus coming towards him1 he said3 ',,behold ,,the ,,lamb ,,of ,,god1 ,,which ,,taketh ,,away ,,the ,,sin ,,of ,,the ,,world4' ,the next day ,john saw ,jesus again1 and again he said the same words3 ',,behold ,,the ,,lamb ,,of ,,god6' ,john called ,jesus the ,lamb of ,god1 because ,he had come to die for our sins4 ,two men were standing close to ,john when ,jesus came by1 and they heard what he said4 ,the name of one of these men was ,andrew1 and of the other ,john4 ,jesus knew that they would like to speak to ,him1 so ,he turned round and asked them what they wanted4 ',master1' they said1 'where dwellest ,thou8' 7that means 'where are you living8'7 ,jesus said1 ',come1 and you shall see4' ,and ,he took the two disciples to ,his home1 and ,he let them stay with ,him the whole of the day4 ,what a happy day that must have been6 ,andrew had a brother called ,simon1 and he went and found him1 and told him that he had found the ,messiah1 and brought him to see his new ,master4 ,so now ,jesus had three disciples--,john1 ,andrew1 and ,simon2 and next day ,he took them away with ,him to ,galilee4 ,while they were going along1 ,jesus saw a man called ,philip1 who came from the place where ,simon and ,andrew lived when they were at home4 ,jesus told ,philip to come with ,him1 and he came4 ,but ,philip went to a friend of his1 a very good man called ,nathanael1 also called ,bartholomew1 and he told him that he had found ,jesus of ,nazareth1 the ,messiah1 and begged him to come and see ,him4 ,how many disciples had ,jesus now8 ,let us see4 ,john1 ,andrew1 ,simon1 ,philip1 and ,nathanael--five4 ,and very likely ,john had brought his brother ,james to ,jesus4 ,if so1 that would make six4 ,directly ,jesus came into ,galilee ,he was invited to a wedding1 at a place called ,cana1 and all of ,his disciples with ,him4 ,jesus went to the wedding because ,he likes to see people happy1 and loves to make them happy4 ,in ,america1 people often drink more wine at weddings and at other times than is good for them1 and a great many people go without any wine at all1 so as to set a good example4 ,but in the ,east it is different4 ,the people there hardly ever take too much wine4 ,so ,jesus allowed ,his disciples to use it1 and ,he drank it ,himself4 ,there was some wine at the wedding party to which ,jesus went2 but presently it came to an end4 ,then ,mary came to ,jesus1 and said1 ',they have no wine4' ,jesus knew what ,mary was thinking about1 but ,he had to tell her to wait2 and ,he had to make ,mary understand that ,he could not do everything now which she told ,him to do1 exactly as when ,he was a boy4 ,he was ,god's ,son as well as ,mary's1 and ,he had ,god's work to do1 and ,he must do it at ,god's time4 ,illustration3 ,a modern ,jew's wedding party in ,galilee4 ,but when ,mary went back1 she told the servants to do whatever ,jesus told them4 ,close to the house there were six great stone jars or waterpots1 and ,jesus said to the servants1 ',fill the waterpots with water4 ,and they filled them up to the brim4 ,and lo6 when the water was taken out of the jars1 it was water no longer1 but wine4 ,this was the very first miracle that ,jesus did1 and ,he did it to make people happy1 and to make them believe that ,he was the ,son of ,god4 ,dear children1 ,jesus wants you to be happy4 ,and the best way to be happy is to ask ,jesus to go with you everywhere and always1 just as those wedding people asked ,him to come to their party4 ,he did not stay very many days in ,capernaum4 ,the lovely spring flowers told ,him that the ,passover time was coming1 so ,he went up with ,his disciples1 to ,jerusalem4 ,when ,jesus had come to ,jerusalem1 you may be sure that ,his disciples and ,he soon went to the ,temple1 and when they got inside the great ,court of the ,gentiles they found a market was going on there4 ,men were selling oxen and sheep and doves for sacrifice4 ,others were sitting at little tables changing money4 ,and there must have been plenty of noise1 for people in the ,east shout and quarrel a great deal when they are buying or selling4 ,when ,jesus saw this1 ,he was angry2 and ,he made a whip with pieces of cord1 and ,he drove away all the people who were selling in the ,temple4 ,and ,he turned out the sheep and the oxen2 and he told the men who sold doves to take them away1 and not turn ,his ,father's ,house into a store4 ,jesus upset the tables of the money-changers too1 and poured out their money4 ,jesus did a great many wonderful things when ,he was in ,jerusalem that ,passover time1 and many persons saw ,his miracles1 and thought1 ',yes1 this is the ,messiah4' ,but ,jesus did not trust any of those people4 ,he knew that they did not really love ,him4 ,but there was one man in ,jerusalem who did want to be ,jesus ,christ's disciple4 ,his name was ,nicodemus4 ,he was a great ,rabbi1 but not proud like the other ,rabbis1 and he wanted to ask ,jesus a great many questions4 ,but he did not want the other ,rabbis and the priests to see him coming to ,jesus4 ,so he came to ,jesus by night--in the dark4 ,did ,jesus say1 ',you are not brave1 ,nicodemus1 ,i am ashamed of you2 go away'8 ,ah no6 ,he talked kindly to him1 and ,he told him that he would have to be born again4 ,he meant that ,nicodemus must ask ,god to send him ,his ,holy ,spirit1 and to give him a new heart4 ,and then ,jesus explained to ,nicodemus why ,he had come down from heaven4 ,he said3 ',,god ,,so ,,loved ,,the ,,world1 ,,that ,,he ,,gave ,,his ,,only ,,begotten ,,son1 ,,that ,,whosoever ,,believeth ,,in ,,him ,,should ,,not ,,perish1 ,,but ,,have ,,everlasting ,,life4' ,,chapter ,,vi ,,some ,,words ,,and ,,works ,,of ,,jesus ,jesus having to go to ,galilee1 made up ,his mind to pass through ,samaria4 ,it was a long1 rough journey1 and at last they came near a town called ,sychar4 ,near by was the well dug by ,jacob when he lived in ,shechem4 ,jesus was so tired that ,he sat down to rest on the edge of the well1 while ,his disciples went on to buy food4 ,illustration3 ,jacob's well4 ,while ,jesus was sitting by the well1 a woman came there to draw water4 ,jesus asked her to do something kind for ,him1 ,he said ',give ,me to drink4' ,the woman was surprised1 and said to ,him1 ',you are a ,jew1 and ,i am a ,samaritan4 ,why then do you ask me for water8' ,jesus said1 ',,if ,,you ,,knew ,,who ,i ,,am1 ,,you ,,would ,,have ,,asked ,,me1 ,,and ,i ,,would ,,have ,,given ,,you ,,living ,,water4' ,jesus meant the ,holy ,spirit4 ,he gives the ,holy ,spirit to everyone who asks ,him4 ,then ,jesus spoke to the woman about the bad things she had done1 and she tried to make ,him talk about something else4 ,but she could not stop ,his wonderful words4 ,at last she said1 ',i know that the ,messiah is coming4 ,he will tell us all things4' ,then ,jesus said to her1 ',i ,,that ,,speak ,,unto ,,thee ,,am ,,he4' ,just then ,his disciples came up to the well1 and they were very much astonished to see ,him talking to the woman4 ,the ,jew men were too proud to talk much to women1 even if the women were ,jews2 and this was a ,samaritan4 ,but the disciples did not ask ,jesus any questions about why ,he talked to the woman4 ,they brought ,him the things they had been buying1 and said1 ',master1 eat4' ,but ,jesus was so happy that ,he had been able to speak good words to that poor woman that ,he did not feel hungry any more4 ,he told ,his disciples that doing ,god's work was the food ,he liked best4 ,after this ,jesus lived for awhile first at ,nazareth1 and then at ,capernaum4 ,there was a boy ill in ,capernaum just then with a fever4 ,it is so hot near the ,sea of ,galilee that the people who live there often get fever4 ,that sick boy's father was rich1 but money could not make the dying boy well4 ,his father had heard of ,jesus1 and when he knew that ,jesus had come into ,galilee1 and that ,he was only a few miles away1 he came to ,him1 and begged ,him to come down to ,capernaum and make his child well4 ,at first ,jesus said to him1 ',you will not believe on ,me unless you see ,me do some wonderful thing4' ,but when ,he saw how eager the poor father was1 ,he thought ,he would try him1 and ,he said to him1 ',go thy way1 thy son liveth4' ,directly ,jesus said that1 the man felt sure in his heart that his boy was well4 ,he did not ask ,jesus any more to come with him1 but he just went back home quietly by himself4 ,next day1 as he was going down the long hilly road from ,cana to ,capernaum1 some of the servants from his house came to meet him1 and they said to him1 ',thy son liveth4' ,then the father asked them what time it was when the boy began to get better1 and said1 ',yesterday1 at the seventh hour 7that means at one o'clock7 the fever left him4' ,then the father knew that that was the very time when ,jesus had said to him1 ',thy son liveth1' and he and all the people in the house believed in ,jesus4 ,the ,jews could not bear paying taxes to the ,romans1 and they hated the publicans4 ,they would not eat with them or talk with them4 ,but ,jesus did not hate the publicans4 ,he only hated the wrong things they did4 ,so one day1 when ,he was outside the town of ,capernaum1 and saw ,matthew sitting and taking the taxes1 ,he said to him1 ',follow ,me4' ,and ,matthew got up from his work1 and at once left all and followed ,jesus4 ,jesus often told ,his disciples beautiful stories4 ,one day ,he told them a story to teach them not to be proud like the ,pharisees4 ',two men went up into the ,temple to pray3 the one a ,pharisee1 and the other a publican4 ,the ,pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself1 ,god1 ,i thank ,thee that ,i am not as other men are2 ,i thank ,thee that ,i am not even as this publican4 ,twice a week ,i go without food1 and ,i give away a great deal of money4 ,but the publican1 standing afar off1 would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven1 but smote upon his breast1 saying1 ,god be merciful to me1 a sinner4 ,when the publican went home that night he was better and happier than the ,pharisee4 ,the ,pharisee thought he was good2 he did not want to be forgiven1 and so ,god let him carry all his sins back home with him again4 ,but the publican knew he was a sinner1 and was sorry1 and so ,god forgave his sins4' ,while ,jesus was in ,capernaum1 ,he went every ,sabbath day to teach in the synagogue4 ,one day a man shouted out-- ',what have we to do with ,thee1 ,thou ,jesus of ,nazareth8 ,i know ,thee who ,thou art1 the ,holy ,one of ,god4' ,satan had put an unclean spirit1 or devil1 in that man4 ,jesus was not angry with the poor man1 but ,he spoke to the unclean spirit1 and said1 ',be silent1 and come out of him4' ,he came out1 and the man became well4 ,the people in the synagogue were greatly surprised4 ,they said1 ',what thing is this8 ,he commandeth even the unclean spirits and they obey ,him4' ,when the service was over1 the people who had seen the miracle went home1 and talked to everybody about what they had seen4 ,some of them had sick friends1 and some had friends with unclean spirits1 and they longed to bring them to ,jesus4 ,but it was the ,sabbath1 and they would not bring them until the evening1 at which time their ,sabbath came to an end4 ,so as soon as the sun set that ,sabbath day1 a great crowd was seen standing round ,peter's house4 ,it seemed as if all the people of ,capernaum must be there6 ,they had brought their sick friends1 and laid them down at the door4 ,and ,jesus put ,his hands on the sick people1 and healed them all4 ,in the east there is a dreadful illness called leprosy1 and the people who have it are called lepers4 ,no doctor can cure it4 ,at the time when ,jesus lived on the earth1 lepers were not allowed to come into cities4 ,and they had to go about with nothing on their heads1 and with their dresses torn1 and with their mouths covered over2 and when they saw anybody coming1 they had to call out1 ',unclean6 unclean6' ,one day when ,jesus went into a town a leper saw ,him4 ,the poor man came to ,jesus and knelt down before ,him1 and fell on his face4 ,and he said1 ',if ,thou wilt1 ,thou canst make me clean4' ,and ,jesus put out ,his hand1 and touched him1 and said to him1 ',i will2 be thou clean4' ,and as soon as ,jesus had said that1 the leper was well4 ,sin is just like leprosy4 ,a baby's naughtiness does not look very bad2 but that naughtiness spreads and gets stronger as baby gets older1 and nobody but ,jesus can take it away4 ,jesus ,christ's body must often have felt very tired1 for crowds followed ,him about all the time4 ,they came from ,perea1 and from ,judaea1 and from other places too1 to see the wonderful new ,teacher4 ,and ,jesus preached to them all1 and healed their sicknesses4 ,the most wonderful sermon that was ever preached in all the world is called the ,sermon on the ,mount1 because ,jesus sat down on a hill to preach it4 ,after a time ,jesus went up again to ,jerusalem4 ,in or near ,jerusalem there was a spring of water which was as good as medicine1 because it made sick people well if they bathed in it often enough4 ,this spring ran into a bathing-place called the ,pool of ,bethesda4 ,numbers of sick persons came to bathe in that pool4 ,one ,sabbath day ,jesus saw quite a crowd there4 ,some were blind1 some were lame1 some were sick of the palsy4 ,they were sitting1 or lying1 by the side of the pool4 ,jesus was very sorry for one poor man there4 ,he had been ill thirty-eight years4 ,so ,jesus said to the man1 ',arise1 take up thy bed1 and walk4' ,and at once the sick man was well1 and took up his mattress and walked4 ,now the ,rabbis had a number of very silly rules about the ,sabbath day4 ,even if a man broke his arm or his leg on the ,sabbath the ,rabbis would not allow the doctor to put the bone right till the next day4 ,so they were very angry when they found that ,jesus had made that poor man well on the ,sabbath day1 and had told him to carry his mattress home4 ,they told the man he was doing very wrong1 and they tried to kill ,jesus4 ,but ,jesus told them that ,his ,heavenly ,father was never idle1 and that ,he must do the same works as ,god4 ,that made the ,rabbis more angry than ever4 ,they said1 ',he calls ,god ,his own ,father1 making ,himself equal with ,god4' ,from that time the ,jews in ,jerusalem made up their minds more than ever to kill ,jesus2 and wherever ,he went they sent men to watch ,him and listen to ,his words1 so that they might make up some excuse for putting ,him to death4 ,what kind of work does ,god do on ,sunday1 dear children8 ,why1 ,he does all sorts of kind and beautiful things4 ,he makes the sun rise1 and the flowers grow1 and the birds sing2 and ,he takes care of little children on ,sunday exactly the same as he does on other days4 ,and ,jesus did the same kind of work1 ,he made people happy and well on the ,sabbath4 ,and we may do works of love--kind1 loving things for other people--on ,sunday4 ,another ,sabbath day1 soon after that1 the ,lord ,jesus and ,his disciples were walking through a cornfield4 ,the disciples were hungry1 so they rubbed some corn in their hands as they went along1 and ate it4 ,some of the ,pharisees saw the disciples1 and they were shocked2 and they spoke to ,jesus about it4 ,but ,jesus told the ,pharisees that the disciples were doing nothing wrong4 ,he said1 ',,the ,,sabbath ,,was ,,made ,,for ,,man1 ,,and ,,not ,,man ,,for ,,the ,,sabbath2 ,,therefore ,,the ,,son ,,of ,,man ,,is ,,lord ,,also ,,of ,,the ,,sabbath ,,day4' ,jesus meant that ,god gave the ,sabbath day to ,adam and his children as a beautiful present1 to be the best and happiest day of all the seven4 ,god meant it as a rest for our souls and bodies4 ,,chapter ,,vii ,a ,,friend ,,for ,,the ,,sorrowful ,one day ,jesus went to a town called ,nain 7or ,beautiful71 about twenty-five miles from ,capernaum4 ,a great crowd of people followed ,jesus and ,his disciples2 and when they came near to the gate of the city of ,nain1 they saw a funeral coming out4 ,the dead body of a young man was being carried out on a bier to be buried4 ,when ,jesus saw the poor mother crying and sobbing1 ,he felt very sorry for her1 and ,he said to her1 ',weep not4' ,and ,jesus came and touched the bier1 and the men who were carrying it stood still4 ,and ,jesus said1 ',young man1 ,i say unto thee1 ,arise4' ,and life came back into that dead body again4 ,he that was dead sat up and began to speak4 ,and ,jesus gave him back to his mother4 ,a ,pharisee1 called ,simon1 once asked ,jesus to come and have dinner with him4 ,when anyone in that land went to a feast1 the master of the house used to kiss him1 and say1 ',the ,lord be with you1' and put some sweet smelling oil on his hair and beard1 and the servants used to bring the visitor water to wash his feet4 ,but none of those kind things were done to ,jesus when ,he came to that ,pharisee's house4 ,presently ,jesus and ,simon began to eat4 ,in that country1 people often lay down to eat4 ,broad settees1 or couches1 were put round the table1 and the visitors used to lie down in rows on these settees4 ,their heads were near the table1 and their feet were the other way4 ,they lay down on their left side1 and they had cushions to put their elbows on1 so that they could raise themselves up while they were eating4 ,while ,jesus and ,simon were at dinner1 a woman came in out of the street4 ,in the ,east1 people walk in and out of other people's houses just as they like4 ,but that woman had been very wicked1 and ,simon was not pleased when he saw her come in4 ,but nobody said anything to her4 ,so she came to ,jesus1 and stood at ,his feet1 behind the couch on which ,he w as lying1 and cried till the tears ran down her face4 ,then as her tears dropped on to the feet of ,jesus1 she stooped down and wiped them away with her long hair4 ,and then she kissed the feet of ,jesus many times1 and put precious sweet-smelling ointment upon them4 ,perhaps she had heard some beautiful words which ,jesus had just been saying to the people out of doors-- ',,come ,,unto ,,me1 ,,all ,,ye ,,that ,,labour ,,and ,,are ,,heavy ,,laden1 ,,and ,i ,,will ,,give ,,you ,,best4' ,her sins were like a heavy load1 and so she had come to ,jesus4 ,but ,simon thought to himself1 ',if ,jesus had really come from ,god1 ,he would have known how wicked this woman is1 and ,he would not have allowed her to touch ,him4' ,jesus knew what ,simon was thinking1 and ,he said that once upon a time there were two men who owed some money4 ,one owed a great deal of money1 and the other owed a little4 ,but when the time came for them to pay the money they could not do it4 ,and the kind man forgave them both4 ,jesus then asked ,simon which of the two men would love that kind friend most4 ,simon said1 ',i suppose he to whom he forgave most4' ,jesus said that that was quite right4 ,then ,he turned to the woman1 and said to ,simon3 ',seest thou this woman8 ,i came into thine house2 thou gavest ,me no water for ,my feet1 but she has washed ,my feet with tears1 and wiped them with the hairs of her head4 ,thou gavest ,me no kiss1 but this woman1 since the time ,i came in1 hath not ceased to kiss ,my feet3 ,my head with oil thou didst not anoint1 but she hath anointed ,my feet with ointment4 ,i say unto thee1 her sins1 which are many1 are forgiven1 for she loved much2 but to whom little is forgiven1 the same loveth little4' ,and then ,jesus said to the woman1 ',,thy ,,sins ,,are ,,forgiven4 ,,thy ,,faith ,,hath ,,saved ,,thee4 ,,go ,,in ,,peace4' ,and she left her heavy load of sin with ,jesus1 and took away instead the rest and peace ,he gives4 ,after ,jesus had finished all the work ,he wanted to do in ,nain1 ,he went again into every part of ,galilee to tell people the good news that a ,saviour had come4 ,jesus preached to the crowds out of a boat4 ,he told them most beautiful stories4 ,they liked these stories so much that they did not care to go away--not even when it was evening4 ,but ,jesus and ,his disciples needed rest1 so ,jesus told the disciples to go over to the other side of the lake4 ,when the boat started1 ,jesus was so tired that ,he lay down at the end1 out of the way of the men who were rowing1 and put ,his head upon a pillow1 and fell fast asleep4 ,soon the wind began to blow1 and it blew louder and louder4 ,then the waves curled over and dashed into the boat till the boat was nearly full4 ,but still ,jesus slept quietly on4 ,the disciples were afraid that their boat would sink1 and they came to ,jesus1 and woke ,him1 and said1 ',master6 ,master6 we perish6 ,lord1 save6' ,and ,jesus arose1 and told the wind to stop1 and ,he said to the sea1 ',peace1 be still4' ,and suddenly the wind stopped1 and the sea was quite smooth4 ,then ,jesus said gently to ,his disciples1 ',where is your faith8' ,those disciples might have known that the boat could not sink when ,jesus was in it4 ,illustration3 ,ruins of ,capernaum4 ,when ,jesus came back to ,capernaum1 a man1 called ,jairus1 fell down at ,his feet and begged ,him to go to his house1 where his little girl1 about twelve years old1 was dying4 ,so ,jesus and ,his disciples started to go to ,jairus' house1 and a great crowd of people went with ,him4 ,but while they were going1 someone came to ,jairus1 and said1 ',it is of no use to trouble the ,master any more4 ,the child is dead4' ,but ,jesus said to him quickly1 ',do not be afraid4 ,only believe1 and she shall be made well4' ,when ,jesus came to the house of ,jairus1 ,he heard a great noise4 ,as soon as anyone dies in the ,east1 people come to the house1 and cry and howl1 and play wretched music4 ,they are paid to do that4 ,that was the noise which ,jesus heard1 and he asked1 ',why do you make this ado8 ,the little maid is sleeping4' ,and those rude people laughed at ,jesus1 just as if ,he did not know what ,he was talking about4 ,so ,jesus turned them all out4 ,then ,jesus took three of ,his disciples--,peter1 and ,james and ,john--and ,jairus and his wife2 and they went together to look at the child4 ,there she was1 lying quite still4 ,life had flown away from her body4 ,but ,jesus took hold of the girl's hand1 and said1 ',my little lamb1 ,i say unto thee1 ,arise4' ,and life flew back to her body again1 and she opened her eyes and got up1 and walked4 ,and ,jesus told her father and mother to give her something to eat4 ,when ,jesus came out of ,jairus' house1 two blind men followed ,him1 begging ,him to make them well4 ,jesus waited till ,he had got back to the house where ,he was staying and then ,he touched their eyes1 and made them see4 ,just about this time ,jesus had some very sad news4 ,herod ,antipas1 the son of wicked ,king ,herod1 had shut up ,john the ,baptist in a prison1 called the ,black ,castle1 by the side of the ,dead ,sea4 ,part of that castle was a beautiful palace1 with lovely furniture and a coloured marble floor4 ,one day ,herod gave a grand birthday party4 ,herod had married a very wicked woman1 who was at the party4 ,her name was ,herodias4 ,herodias hated ,john the ,baptist1 because he had said that she ought not to be ,herod's wife4 ,so she made up her mind to have ,john the ,baptist killed4 ,herodias had a daughter called ,salome1 who danced beautifully4 ,and on that birthday ,herod was so pleased with ,salome's dancing that he said1 ',i will give you anything you ask me for4' ,salome went to her mother1 and said1 ',what shall ,i ask8' ,and ,herodias said1 ',ask for the head of ,john the ,baptist4' ,and ,salome came back quickly and said1 ',i want the head of ,john the ,baptist4' ,now1 it is wrong to break a promise4 ,but it is not wrong to break a wicked promise4 ,it is wrong ever to have made it4 ,herod was sorry1 but he was afraid of what other people in the party would think if he did not do what he had said4 ,so he sent his soldiers to the prison1 and had ,john the ,baptist's head cut off to give to that dancing-girl4 ,jesus had sent ,his twelve disciples out to preach to people ,he could not go and see ,himself4 ,when they came back they had a great deal to talk about1 and they were very tired4 ,but there were always so many people coming to see ,jesus that they could get no quiet time at all1 no time even to eat4 ,they were all at the ,lake of ,galilee again1 and ,jesus told them to come away with ,him into a desert place1 and rest awhile4 ,that desert place was near a town called ,bethsaida1 where ,peter1 and his brother ,andrew1 and ,philip lived once upon a time4 ,jesus and ,his disciples got into a boat as quietly as they could1 and went away4 ,but some people near the lake caught sight of the boat1 and they saw who was in it2 and they ran so fast along the shore of the lake that they got to the desert before ,jesus was there4 ,jesus felt very sorry for these people1 and ,he began to teach them many things4 ,by and by it got late1 and ,jesus said to the disciples1 ',how many loaves have you8 ,go and see4' ,and ,andrew said1 ',there is a boy herewith five barley loaves and two fishes2 but what are they among so many8' ,and ,jesus told him to bring the loaves and fishes4 ,then ,jesus said1 ',make the people sit down4' ,so the disciples arranged the crowds in rows on the grass4 ,and when every one was ready1 ,jesus took the five loaves and the two fishes in ,his hands1 and ,he blessed them1 and divided them1 and gave them to the disciples1 and the disciples gave them to the people4 ,and there was plenty for everybody4 ,jesus made those loaves and fishes last out till everybody had had enough4 ,and then ,he said1 ',gather up the fragments 7that means the little pieces7 that are left1 that nothing be lost4' ,and the disciples picked the little pieces up1 and put them together in baskets4 ,and there were twelve large baskets full--more than they had at first4 ,there were five thousand men in that grassy place1 and a great many women and children besides4 ,and when the people saw the miracle that ,jesus had done they said1 ',,this ,,must ,,be ,,the ,,messiah2' and they wanted to make ,him their king--the king of their country1 but not the king of their hearts4 ,jesus did not wish to be made a king like ,herod or ,caesar4 ,he was ,god1 so ,he was ,king of kings already4 ,he made ,his disciples go away at once in the boat to the other side of the lake1 and ,he sent the crowds away ,himself4 ,when ,jesus was alone1 ,he went up into a mountain and prayed4 ,but now a great wind began to blow1 and the waves on the ,sea of ,galilee began to toss about4 ,the disciples rowed hard1 but they could not get on2 the wind kept trying to blow them back4 ,but ,jesus saw them1 and when the night was nearly over1 ,he came to them walking on the sea4 ,the disciples had never seen ,him walking on the water before1 and they could not understand who ,he was1 and they cried out for fear4 ,but ,jesus was sorry for them1 and ,he spoke kindly to them directly and said1 ',,be ,,of ,,good ,,cheer 7that means1 ',be glad'74 ,,it ,,is ,i4 ,,be ,,not ,,afraid4' ,and ,peter said1 ',lord1 if it be ,thou1 bid me come unto ,thee on the water4' ,and ,jesus said1 ',come4' ,and ,peter jumped out of the boat1 and walked on the water to go to ,jesus4 ,but soon ,peter began to think of the rough wind and waves instead of thinking about ,jesus1 and then he could not get on at all1 and he began to sink in the water1 and called but1 ',lord1 save me6' ,and ,jesus put out ,his hand and caught him1 and said1 ',o thou of little faith1 wherefore didst thou doubt8' ,then they both came into the boat1 and the wind stopped blowing4 ,and the disciples fell down at the feet of ,jesus1 and said ',,thou ,,art ,,the ,,son ,,of ,,god4' ,then1 all at once1 they saw that their boat was close to the land4 ,jesus had brought it there4 ,,chapter ,,viii ,,more ,,wonderful ,,works ,,and ,,words ,and now ,jesus went right away from the ,sea of ,galilee again to ,caesarea ,philippi4 ,that place was called ,caesarea after ,augustus ,caesar1 ,emperor of ,rome1 and ,philippi after ,herod ,philip4 ,when they were going to ,caesarea ,philippi1 ,jesus talked quietly to ,his disciples1 and said1 ',whom do you say that ,i am8' ,peter almost always spoke first1 before the others had time to say anything1 and he said quickly1 ',,thou ,,art ,,the ,,christ1 ,,the ,,son ,,of ,,the ,,living ,,god4' ,jesus was very much pleased with that answer4 ,then ,jesus called the people who stood near1 and ,his disciples too1 and ,he told them that if they followed ,him1 they too might have to die for ,his sake4 ,but ,he told them that they must not mind that1 because heaven is better than this world4 ,and ,he told them that if they were ashamed of ,him1 ,he should be ashamed of them before ,his ,father and the holy angels4 ,dear children1 ,i hope1 when you go to school1 or are with your little friends1 that you will never be ashamed of ,jesus4 ,about a week after that talk with ,his disciples1 ,jesus took ,peter1 and ,james1 and ,john into a high hill alone to pray4 ,there is a splendid high mountain near ,caesarea ,philippi1 called ,hermon4 ,all at once1 as ,jesus was praying1 the disciples saw that ,his face shown like the sun1 and ,his clothes were white and shining like the light4 ,and as the disciples looked1 they saw two men talking with ,jesus1 called ,moses and ,elijah1 two holy men who went to heaven long1 long ago4 ,we do not know how long they talked4 ,peter1 and ,james1 and ,john were men1 so they could not look very long at those heavenly visitors2 soon their eyes closed1 and they fell fast asleep4 ,when they woke up1 ,moses and ,elijah were still there1 and when the disciples saw ,jesus again1 looking so bright and beautiful1 they were very much afraid4 ,when they came down from the mountain1 they saw a crowd down below4 ,jesus had left nine of ,his disciples behind when ,he went up ,mount ,hermon2 and now ,he saw a great number of persons all round them1 and heard some ,jews worrying them with questions4 ,when ,jesus came near enough to speak1 ,he asked what was the matter4 ,and a man came running to ,him out of the crowd1 and begged ,him to look at his boy--his only child4 ,and he said to ,jesus1 ',if ,thou canst do anything1 take pity on me1 and help me4' ,and ,jesus made the boy well from that very hour4 ,the disciples had not had faith enough themselves to be able to do that sick boy any good4 ,every year the ,jews had to pay half a shekel of money for the splendid ,temple in ,jerusalem2 and when ,jesus came back to ,capernaum1 the men who were collecting the money came to ,peter1 and said1 ',does not your ,master pay the half-shekel8' ,and ,peter said1 ',yes4' ,now the ,temple was ,god's house1 and ,jesus was ,god's ,son4 ,and ,jesus explained to ,peter when he came into the house that kings did not expect their own sons to pay them taxes4 ,but it was not wrong to pay the half-shekel1 and ,jesus never vexed people if ,he could possibly help it1 so ,he said to ,peter1 ',go thou to the sea and cast a hook1 and take up the fish that first cometh up1 and when thou hast opened its mouth1 thou shalt find a piece of money4 ,that take1 and give unto them for ,me and thee4' ,and now1 after a long time1 ,jesus and ,his disciples went up to ,jerusalem again2 and as they walked along1 they saw ten lepers standing a long way off4 ,as ,jesus came near1 they cried out1 ',jesus1 ,master1 have mercy on us4' ,nine of the lepers were ,jews1 and one was a ,samaritan4 ,and ,jesus was sorry for them all1 and said1 ',go1 show yourselves to the priests4' ,so they turned straight round to go to the priests1 and lo6 as they were going along the road1 they suddenly felt that they were strong and well again4 ,when the ,samaritan felt in himself that the leprosy had gone away1 he turned back1 and threw himself down at the feet of ,jesus1 and thanked ,him1 and thanked ,god too for all ,his goodness4 ,but none of the nine ,jews came back to thank ,jesus4 ,a few days after that a man came to ,jesus1 and asked how he could get to heaven4 ,jesus said that he must love ,god with all his heart1 and his neighbor as himself4 ,then the man said1 ',who is my neighbor8' ,so ,jesus told him this story1 ,,the ,,good ,,samaritan3 ',a certain man went down from ,jerusalem to ,jericho1 and fell among thieves1 which stripped him of his raiment1 and wounded him1 and departed1 leaving him half dead4 ,and by chance there came down a certain priest that way3 and when he saw him1 he passed by on the other side4 ,and likewise a ,levite1 when he was at the place1 came and looked on him1 and passed by on the other side4 ,but a certain ,samaritan1 as he journeyed1 came where he was3 and when he saw him1 he had compassion on him4 ,and went to him1 and bound up his wounds1 pouring in oil and wine1 and set him on his own beast1 and brought him to an inn1 and took care of him4 ,and on the morrow when he departed1 he took out two pence1 and gave them to the host1 and said unto him1 ',take care of him3 and whatsoever thou spendest more1 when ,i come again1 ,i will repay thee4' ,when ,jesus had finished that story1 ,he said1 ',which now of these three was neighbor unto him that fell among the thieves8' ,you can answer that question1 and can go and do like that good ,samaritan4 ,illustration3 ,the good ,samaritan4 ,just opposite the ,temple hill1 ,mount ,moriah1 there was another hill1 called the ,mount of ,olives4 ,on the other side of the ,mount of ,olives was a village1 called ,bethany1 and ,jesus often walked over the hill to see some friends of ,his there1 a brother and two sisters who lived in the village4 ,their names were ,mary and ,martha and ,lazarus4 ,jesus loved them very much1 and they loved ,him4 ,but ,mary and ,martha showed their love in very different ways4 ,mary sat as quiet and still as possible when ,jesus came in1 and listened to every word that ,he said2 and ,martha wanted so much to make ,him happy and comfortable that she ran about the whole time doing things for ,him1 instead of listening to the beautiful words ,he was saying4 ,illustration3 ,bethany4 ,jesus likes you and me to work for ,him2 but ,he likes us to talk to ,him in prayer too1 and to listen to the things that ,he whispers in our hearts1 and to the words that ,he says to us in the ,bible4 ,illustration3 ,child at prayer4 ,,chapter ,,ix4 ,,the ,,man ,,born ,,blind1 ,,and ,,lazarus4 ,one ,sabbath day1 most likely the next ,sabbath day after the ,feast of ,tabernacles1 ,jesus saw a blind beggar out of doors4 ,that poor man had always been blind4 ,he had never been able to see at all4 ,jesus spat on the ground1 and put the wet earth on the blind man's eyes1 and said1 ',go1 wash in the pool of ,siloam4' ,and the man went and washed1 and came back able to see4 ,the people who met him began to ask him1 ',how were thine eyes opened8' ,and the man told them4 ,then they wanted to know where ,jesus was4 ,but the man did not know that4 ,then the people brought him to the ,pharisees to see what they would say4 ,and the ,pharisees said1 ',how is it that you can see now8' ,and the man told them4 ,then the ,pharisees turned him out of the synagogue4 ,jesus heard about that1 and ,he came to the lonely man1 and said1 ',dost thou believe on the ,son of ,god8' ,and the man said1 ',who is ,he1 ,lord1 that ,i might believe 'on ,him8' ,and ,jesus said to him1 ',,thou ,,hast ,,both ,,seen ,,him1 ,,and ,,he ,,it ,,is ,,that ,,talketh ,,with ,,thee4' ,then the man fell down at the feet of ,jesus1 saying1 ',lord1 ,i believe4' ,and now ,jesus turned to the ,pharisees1 and told them that they were very blind4 ,they could see things with their eyes1 but they could not see that their hearts were full of sin4 ,then ,jesus preached one of the most beautiful of all ,his sermons4 ,in it ,he said1 ',i am the ,door of the sheep2 by ,me if any man enter in he shall be saved4 ,i am the ,good ,shepherd2 the ,good ,shepherd giveth ,his life for the sheep4 ,i am the ,good ,shepherd1 and know ,my sheep1 and am known of ,mine2 and ,i lay down ,my life for the sheep1 ,and other sheep ,i have which are not of this fold2 them also ,i must bring1 and they shall hear ,my voice1 and there shall be one flock under one ,shepherd4' ,illustration3 ,the shepherd's care 7#bnd version74 ,the 'other sheep' ,jesus spoke about meant the ,gentiles1 the people who are not ,jews4 ,it meant you and me1 and it meant all the heathen4 ,he has called us4 ,he is calling the heathen4 ,and many sheep1 many quiet little lambs1 have heard the voice of ,jesus1 and are following ,him4 ,have you heard ,him calling you8 ,have you followed ,him8 if not1 oh1 make haste to go after ,him now4 ,soon after ,jesus had gone away from ,bethany1 ,his friend ,lazarus became very ill4 ,martha and ,mary longed for ,jesus now1 and they thought1 ',if ,jesus were here1 our brother would not die2' and they sent a messenger to ,him to say ',lord1 he whom ,thou lovest is sick4' ,when ,jesus heard that1 ,he stayed on quietly where ,he was for two days longer4 ,then ,he came to ,bethany1 and by this time ,lazarus had been in the grave for four days4 ,presently somebody came to ,martha1 and said to her quietly1 ',jesus is coming4' ,when ,martha heard that1 she got up1 and went out to meet ,him4 ,and when she saw ,jesus1 she said1 ',lord1 if ,thou hadst been here1 my brother would not have died2 but ,i know that even now whatever ,thou wilt ask of ,god1 ,god will give it ,thee4' ,jesus said to her1 ',thy brother shall rise again4' ,when ,jesus saw how unhappy ,mary and ,martha were1 ,he too felt very sad1 and said1 ',where have ye laid him8' ,and they said1 ',lord1 come and see4' ,and then----,jesus wept4 ',see how ,he loved ,lazarus1' said the ,jews2 and they wondered that ,jesus had let ,his friend die4 ,now they had come to the grave4 ,it was a hole in the side of a rock1 and there was a heavy stone over it4 ,jesus said1 ',take ye away the stone2' and they rolled it away4 ,then ,jesus lifted up ,his eyes1 and thanked ,god that ,he had heard ,his prayer and given ,him back the life of ,lazarus4 ,and then ,he cried with a loud voice1 ',lazarus1 come forth4' ,and the man who had been dead came out of the cave alive4 ,when the ,jews saw what was done1 some of them believed1 but others hurried off to ,jerusalem to make mischief as fast as they could4 ,after a time ,jesus crossed the ,jordan and again came into ,perea1 and then ,he came slowly down through ,perea to ,jerusalem4 ,illustration3 ,the shepherd's care 7#crd version74 ,,chapter ,x ,,the ,,prodigal ,,son1 ,,and ,,other ,,stories4 ,one day1 when the mothers of ,perea brought their little ones to ,jesus1 the disciples found fault with them for coming1 and tried to keep them away4 ,but when ,jesus saw what the disciples were doing ,he was much displeased1 and said to them-- ',,suffer ,,little ,,children1 ,,and ,,forbid ,,them ,,not1 ,,to ,,come ,,unto ,,me3 ,,for ,,of ,,such ,,is ,,the ,,kingdom ,,of ,,heaven4' ,and ,he took them up in ,his arms1 put ,his hands upon them1 and blessed them4 ,jesus used to tell some very beautiful stories as ,he went slowly through the ,holy ,land4 ,we have not room for all1 but ,i must tell you two or three1 and ,i will tell you them exactly as ,jesus first told them4 ',a certain man had two sons3 and the younger of them said to his father1 ,father1 give me the portion of goods that falleth to me4 ,and he divided unto them his living4 ',and not many days after the younger son gathered all together1 and took his journey into a far country1 and there wasted his substance with riotous living4 ',and when he had spent all1 there arose a mighty famine in that land2 and he began to be in want4 ,and he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country2 and he sent him into his fields to feed swine4 ,and he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat3 and no man gave unto him4 ,and when he came to himself1 he said1 ,how many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare1 and ,i perish with hunger6 ,i will arise and go to my father1 and will say unto him1 ,father1 ,i have sinned against heaven and before thee1 and am no more worthy to be called thy son3 make me as one of thy hired servants4 ',and he arose and came to his father4 ,but when he was yet a great way off1 his father saw him1 and had compassion1 and ran and fell on his neck1 and kissed him4 ',and the son said unto him1 ,father1 ,i have sinned against heaven1 and in thy sight1 and am no more worthy to be called thy son4 ',but the father said to his servants1 ,bring forth the best robe1 and put it on him1 and put a ring on his hand1 and shoes on his feet3 and bring hither the fatted calf1 and kill it2 and let us eat1 and be merry3 for this my son was dead1 and is alive again2 he was lost1 and is found4' ,,the ,,story ,,of ,,the ,,unmerciful ,,servant4 ,at another time ,jesus said-- ',therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king1 which would take account of his servants4 ,and when he had begun to reckon1 one was brought unto him1 which owed him ten thousand talents4 ,but forasmuch as he had not to pay1 his lord commanded him to be sold1 and his wife1 and children1 and all that he had1 and payment to be made4 ',the servant therefore fell down1 and worshipped him1 saying1 ,lord1 have patience with me1 and ,i will pay thee all4 ',then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion1 and loosed him1 and forgave him the debt4 ',but the same servant went out1 and found one of his fellowservants1 which owed him an hundred pence3 and he laid hands on him1 and took him by the throat1 saying1 ,pay me that thou owest4 ',and his fellowservant fell down at his feet1 and besought him1 saying1 ,have patience with me1 and ,i will pay thee all4 ',and he would not3 but went and cast him into prison1 till he should pay the debt4 ,illustration3 ,the ,jordan near ,bethabara4 ',so when his fellowservants saw what was done1 they were very sorry1 and came and told unto their lord all that was done4 ,then his lord1 after that he had called him1 said unto him1 ,o thou wicked servant1 ,i forgave thee all that debt1 because thou desiredst me3 shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant1 even as ,i had pity on thee8 ,and his lord was wroth1 and delivered him to the tormentors1 till he should pay all that was due unto him4 ',so likewise shall my ,heavenly ,father do also unto you1 if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother4' ,jesus often told beautiful parables3 here are two-- ,,the ,,story ,,of ,,the ,,tares4 ',the kingdom of ,heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field3 but while men slept1 his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat1 and went his way4 ',but when the blade was sprung up1 and brought forth fruit1 then appeared the tares also4 ',so the servants of the householder came and said unto him1 ,sir1 didst not thou sow good seed in thy field8 from whence then hath it tares8 ',he said unto them1 ,an enemy hath done this4 ',the servants said unto him1 ,wilt thou then that we go and gather them up8' ',but he said1 ,nay2 lest while ye gather up the tares1 ye root up also the wheat with them4 ,let both grow together until the harvest3 and in the time of harvest ,i will say to the reapers1 ,gather ye together first the tares1 and bind them in bundles to burn them3 but gather the wheat into my barn4' ,,the ,,story ,,of ,,the ,,ten ,,virgins4 ',then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins1 which took their lamps1 and went forth to meet the bride-groom4 ',and five of them were wise1 and five were foolish4 ,they that were foolish took their lamps1 and took no oil with them3 but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps4 ',while the bridegroom tarried1 they all slumbered and slept4 ',and at midnight there was a cry made1 ,behold1 the bridegroom cometh2 go ye out to meet him4 ',then all those virgins arose1 and trimmed their lamps4 ,and the foolish said unto the wise1 ,give us of your oil2 for our lamps are gone out4 ',but the wise answered1 saying1 ,not so2 lest there be not enough for us and you3 but go ye rather to them that sell1 and buy for yourselves4 ',and while they went to buy1 the bride-groom came2 and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage3 and the door was shut4 ',afterwards came also the other virgins1 saying1 ,lord1 ,lord1 open to us4 ',but he answered and said1 ,verily ,i say unto you1 ,i know you not4 ,watch therefore1 for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the ,son of ,man cometh4' ,,chapter ,,xi4 ,,the ,,last ,,days ,,in ,,jerusalem4 ,when it was time for ,him to end ,his work on earth1 ,jesus started for ,jerusalem4 ,the people in ,jerusalem heard that ,he was coming1 and crowds of them poured out of ,jerusalem to meet ,him4 ,they carried boughs of palm trees in their hands1 and waved them1 and cried1 ',,hosanna6 ,,blessed ,,be ,,the ,,king ,,that ,,cometh ,,in ,,the ,,name ,,of ,,the ,,lord6 ,,peace ,,in ,,heaven1 ,,and ,,glory ,,in ,,the ,,highest4' ,presently ,jesus came to a part of the ,mount of ,olives where ,he could see ,jerusalem and the ,temple straight before ,him2 and as ,he looked at them1 ,he wept aloud4 ,he wept because they loved their sins1 and hated their ,saviour4 ,he wept because ,he knew that ,god would have to punish them4 ,he knew that in a very few years the ,romans would come and fight against ,jerusalem1 and burn down that ,temple1 and kill thousands of the ,jews1 or carry them away as slaves4 ,were not these things enough to make the ,lord ,jesus weep8 ,illustration3 ,mount of ,olives and ,jerusalem4 ,the blind and the lame came to ,jesus in the ,temple1 and ,he made them well2 and when the little children cried1 ',,hosanna ,,to ,,the ,,son ,,of ,,david1' ,he was pleased to hear their song4 ,but the priests were very angry4 ',hosanna to the ,son of ,david' means ',save us1 ,jesus1 our ,king4' ,the priests could not bear to hear the children call ,jesus their ,king1 and ask ,him to save them4 ,and ,satan is very angry now when ,he hears a little child say1 ',save me1 ,o ,jesus1 my ,king4' ,but ,jesus is pleased4 ,during these last days ,jesus stayed quietly each night at ,bethany2 but the priests were very busy thinking how they could take ,him prisoner1 and they were very pleased when ,judas came in secretly1 and said1 ',give me money1 and ,i will give you ,jesus4' ,and the priests said they would give ,judas thirty pieces of silver if he would give ,jesus up to them4 ,thirty pieces of silver6 ,why1 that was only about seventeen dollars 7#ag7--only as much as used to be paid for a slave4 ,the next day while ,jesus stayed quietly in ,bethany1 ,peter and ,john were very busy1 for ,jesus had sent them to ,jerusalem to get ready for the ,passover4 ,they had to take a lamb to the ,temple to be killed by the priests1 and they had to find a house in which to eat the ,passover supper4 ,once every year the ,jews used to kill a lamb1 and pour out its blood before ,god1 to show that they remembered ,god's goodness to them when they were in ,egypt1 in letting his angel pass over their houses4 ,and then they roasted the lamb1 and met together in their houses to eat it1 and to thank ,god for all his love and kindness4 ,when ,peter and ,john had got the ,passover supper quite ready1 ,jesus came from ,bethany with the rest of ,his disciples1 and they all sat down together at the table2 and ,jesus told the disciples that ,he was very glad to eat this ,passover with them1 because it was the very last time ,he would eat and drink at all before ,he died4 ,then ,jesus took off ,his long1 loose outside dress1 and ,he wrapt a towel round ,him1 and poured water into a basin1 and began to wash the disciples' feet1 and to wipe them with the long towel which ,he had fastened round ,his waist4 ,when ,jesus had finished washing ,his disciples' feet1 ,he put on ,his long coat again 7it was called an abba71 and sat down4 ,and ,he told ,his disciples that ,he had given them an example1 so that they might be kind to one another1 and wait upon one another4 ,jesus said many beautiful words to ,his disciples that night at the supper2 and when the supper was finished1 they went out into the ,mount of ,olives1 to a place called ,gethsemane1 a garden full of olive trees1 where ,jesus often went to pray4 ,when ,jesus came to ,gethsemane with ,his disciples1 ,he told them to sit down and wait for ,him while ,he went on farther to pray4 ,but ,he took with ,him ,peter and ,james and ,john4 ,as they walked on1 ,jesus began to be so very sorrowful that ,he wanted to be quite alone with ,god4 ,so ,he told ,peter and ,james and ,john to stay behind and to watch4 ,but they went to sleep4 ,and then ,jesus went a little way off1 and fell down on ,his knees and prayed4 ,and now ,his mind was in such pain that ,he suffered agony1 and the sweat rolled down ,his face in drops of blood4 ,then ,jesus came to ,peter and ,james and ,john1 and found them fast asleep4 ,twice ,jesus went away and prayed the same prayer1 and twice ,he came back to find ,his disciples asleep4 ,illustration3 ,gethsemane4 ,and now a great crowd poured into the garden4 ,judas was walking first1 to show the others the way1 and he came up to ,jesus and kissed ,him again and again1 and said1 ',master6 ,master6 ,peace6' ,and when the people saw ,judas do that1 they took hold of ,jesus and held ,him fast4 ,they took ,jesus first to the house of a priest called ,annas1 and then to the palace of ,caiaphas the high priest2 and ,john1 who knew somebody in that house1 was allowed to come in4 ,peter was left outside2 but soon ,john asked the girl at the door to let ,peter in too4 ,peter was glad to come in to see what was being done to his dear ,master4 ,the houses in the ,east are built round a great square court1 like a big hall1 only it has no roof4 ,it was the middle of the night1 and the cold air blew into that court4 ,but the servants had made a great fire of coals in the middle of the court1 and while ,jesus was standing before ,caiaphas and the other priests1 the servants sat round that fire waiting1 and warming themselves4 ,peter came and sat down with the servants1 and warmed himself too4 ,presently the girl who attended to the door came up to the fire1 and she had a good look at ,peter1 and said1 ',and you were with ,jesus of ,nazareth4 ,are you not one of ,his disciples8' ,then ,peter told a lie before all the servants1 and said1 ',woman1 ,i am not4 ,i do not know ,him1 and ,i do not know what you mean4' ,and he went on warming himself1 and tried to look as though he knew nothing in the world about ,jesus4 ,but ,peter loved ,jesus too much to be able to do this well4 ,he was unhappy1 he could not sit still2 he got up1 and went away into a place near the door1 called the porch1 and when he was in the porch he heard a cock crow4 ,perhaps he went into the porch because he thought that it would be dark there and that nobody would see him4 ,but the girl who kept the door told another woman to look at him1 and that woman said to the people who stood by1 ',this fellow was with ,jesus of ,nazareth1 and is one of ,his disciples4' ,then a man who stood there said to ,peter1 ',are you not one of ,his disciples8' ,and again ,peter told a lie1 and said1 ',man1 ,i am not4 ,i do not know the ,man4' ,an hour passed by1 and then some of the people near said1 ',you must be one of the disciples of ,jesus4 ,the way that you speak shows that you come from ,galilee4' ,while ,peter was again denying him1 ,jesus turned round1 and looked upon ,peter4 ,and ,peter remembered what ,jesus had said to him1 ',before the cock crow twice1 you will say three times you do not know ,me4' ,and when he thought about what he had done1 he was very1 very sorry2 and he went out of the high priest's palace1 and wept bitterly4 ,,chapter ,,xii ,,the ,,crucifixion ,,and ,,the ,,resurrection ,when the morning came1 the priests met once more with all the chief ,jews1 and said ,jesus must die4 ,but the ,jews could not put anyone to death4 ,the ,romans would not allow it4 ,so they took ,jesus to the ,roman governor1 whose name was ,pontius ,pilate4 ,when ,judas saw that the priests had made up their minds to kill ,jesus1 he began to feel very unhappy4 ,he did not care for the money now4 ,he came to the ,temple1 and brought it back to the priest1 and said1 ',it was very wrong of me to give ,jesus up to you4 ,he had done nothing wrong4' ,but their hearts were as hard as stone4 ,they said to ,judas1 ',what is that to us8 ,see thou to that4' ,then ,judas had no hope left4 ,he flung the thirty pieces of silver down in the ,court of the ,priests1 and went and hung himself4 ,but oh6 what a pity that he did not go to ,jesus and ask ,jesus to forgive him1 instead of going to the priests6 ,jesus is a good1 kind1 loving ,master4 ,when we do wrong1 if we are very sorry1 like ,peter1 and will come and ask ,jesus1 ,he will forgive us4 ,for ',,the ,,blood ,,of ,,jesus ,,christ1 ,,god',s ,,son1 ,,cleanseth ,,us ,,from ,,all ,,sin4' ,pilate took ,jesus inside his splendid palace1 away from the ,jews1 and asked ,him1 ',art thou a ,king then8' ',yes1' ,jesus said1 'but ,my kingdom is not of this world4 ,i came into this world to teach people the truth4 ,that is the reason ,i was born4' ',what is truth8' said ,pilate4 ,but he did not wait for an answer4 ,he went out again to the ,jews4 ,when the ,jews saw ,pilate again1 they began to tell him lies which they had been making up about ,jesus4 ,and ,jesus stood by and said nothing4 ,presently ,pilate said to ,jesus1 ',see what a number of things they are saying against you4 ,have you nothing to say8' ,but ,jesus did not answer one single word1 and ,pilate was greatly surprised4 ,he felt sure that the quiet prisoner was right and that the ,jews were wrong2 and he said to the priests and to the people1 ',i find in ,him no fault at all4' ,it was the custom for ,pilate at ,passover time to set free from prison any one prisoner the people liked to ask for4 ,so ,pilate said to the crowd1 ',shall ,i let ,jesus go8' ,then the priests told the people what to say1 and they shouted1 ',not this man1 but ,barabbas4' ,pilate wanted very much to let ,jesus go1 and he said1 ',what shall ,i do then with ,jesus8' ,the crowd shouted1 ',let ,him be crucified6 ,crucify ,him6 ,crucify ,him6' ',why1' said ,pilate1 'what has ,he done wrong8 ,he does not deserve to die4 ,i will scourge ,him and let ,him go4' ,then the people cried out more loudly than ever1 ',let ,him be crucified6 ,crucify ,him6' ,but ,pilate did not want to be shouted at for five or six days and nights again4 ,and1 besides1 he rather wanted to please the ,jews if he could1 because he had done many things to vex them2 so he thought1 ',i will do what they wish4' ,but first he had a basin of water brought1 and he washed his hands before all the people1 and said1 ',i have nothing to do with the blood of this good ,man4 ,see ye to it4' ,and all the people answered and said1 ',his blood be on us1 and on our children4' ,sometimes now1 when we don't want to have anything to do with a thing1 we say1 ',i wash my hands of it4' ,but ,pilate did have something to do with the death of ,jesus1 and water would not wash away that sin4 ,and at last1 wishing to please them1 ,pilate had ,barabbas brought out of prison1 and gave ,jesus up to be beaten4 ,the ,roman soldiers seized ,jesus1 and took off ,his clothes and put a scarlet dress on ,him1 to imitate the ,emperor's purple robe2 and they twisted pieces of a thorny plant which grows round ,jerusalem into the shape of a crown1 and put it on ,his head2 and they put a reed in ,his hand for a sceptre4 ,and then all the soldiers fell down before ,jesus1 and said1 ',hail1 ,king of the ,jews4' ,and then they spit at ,jesus1 and slapped ,him2 and they snatched the reed out of ,his hands and struck ,him on the head1 so as to drive in the thorns4 ,outside the city gate1 on the north side of ,jerusalem1 there is a round hill1 called the ,place of ,stoning4 ,on one side of that hill there is a straight yellow cliff1 and prisoners used sometimes to be thrown down from that cliff1 and then stoned4 ,and sometimes they were taken to the top of that round hill and crucified4 ,it is very likely that this is where the soldiers took ,jesus4 ,that hill is often called ,calvary4 ,the soldiers made ,jesus lie down on the cross1 and they nailed ,him to it--putting nails through ,his hands and ,his feet4 ,then they lifted up the cross with ,jesus on it1 and fixed it in a hole in the ground4 ,and ,jesus said1 ',,father1 ,,forgive ,,them2 ,,for ,,they ,,know ,,not ,,what ,,they ,,do4' ,then the soldiers crucified two thieves1 and put them near ,jesus1 one on each side2 and they nailed up some white boards at the top of the crosses with black letters on them1 to say what the prisoners had done4 ,they put over ,jesus ,christ's head the words-- ',,this ,,is ,,jesus ,,of ,,nazareth1 ,,the ,,king ,,of ,,the ,,jews4' ,three hours of fearful pain passed away4 ,it was twelve o'clock4 ,and now it became quite dark and it was dark till three o'clock in the afternoon4 ,that was a dreadful three hours more for ,jesus4 ,it was a time of agony of mind1 like the time ,he spent in the ,garden of ,gethsemane4 ,he was having ,his last fight with ,satan1 and ,he felt quite alone4 ,when it was about three o'clock1 ,jesus cried out with a loud voice1 ',it is finished4' ,and ,he cried again with a loud voice1 and said1 ',father1 into ,thy hands ,i commend ,my spirit4' ,and ,he bowed ,his head and died4 ,illustration3 ,calvary4 ,and now wonderful things happened4 ,the ground shook2 the graves opened2 dead people woke up to life again2 and a great veil1 or curtain1 which hung before the most holy part of the ,temple1 was suddenly torn into two pieces4 ,the high priest used to go once a year into that ,most ,holy ,place to offer sacrifice for sin before ,god4 ,but when the great purple and gold curtain was torn down without hands1 it was just as if a voice from heaven had said1 ',no more blood of lambs1 no more high priest is wanted now4 ,jesus1 the real ,passover ,lamb1 has been sacrificed4 ,jesus has offered ,his own blood before ,god for sinners1 and ,god will forgive every sinner who trusts in the blood of ,jesus4' ,then a rich man1 called ,joseph1 came to ,pilate and begged ,pilate to let him have the body of ,jesus to bury4 ,pilate said that ,joseph might have the body of his ,master4 ,and ,joseph came and took it down from the cross2 and he and ,nicodemus wrapped the body round with clean linen1 with a very great quantity of sweet-smelling stuff inside the linen4 ,there was a garden close to the place where ,jesus was crucified1 and in that garden there was a grave which ,joseph had cut in a rock4 ,the grave was not like those which we have4 ,it was a little room in the rock1 with a seat on the right hand1 and a seat on the left1 and with a place in the wall just opposite the door for the body4 ,joseph and ,nicodemus laid the body of ,jesus in this new grave4 ,then they came out1 and rolled a great round stone over the door1 and went away4 ,jesus was crucified on ,friday1 and now it was ,sunday4 ,it was very early in the morning4 ,the soldiers were watching at the grave of ,jesus1 and all was still2 when suddenly the earth began to tremble and shake4 ,and behold1 an angel came down from heaven1 and rolled away the stone at the door of the tomb1 and the ,lord of ,life came out4 ,the soldiers did not see ,jesus1 but they did see the shining angel4 ,the ,roman soldiers shook with fright4 ,they were so frightened that they had no strength left in them1 and as soon as they could they ran away from the place4 ,and now that the soldiers had gone1 some women came near--,mary ,magdalene1 ,mary the mother of ,james1 ,joanna1 ,salome1 and at least one or two more women4 ,they had brought with them some sweet-smelling spices1 which they had made or bought1 to put round the body of ,jesus4 ,the light was beginning to come in the sky1 to show that the sun would be up soon1 but it was still rather dark4 ,as the women came along1 they said one to the other1 ',who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb8' ,for it was very great4 ,then they looked1 and behold6 the stone was gone4 ,and ,mary ,magdalene ran back to the city1 to tell ,peter and ,john that the door of the tomb was open4 ,but the other women went on1 and went into the tomb where they had seen ,jesus laid4 ,he was not there now1 but an angel in a long white robe was sitting on the right-hand side of the tomb4 ,then the women saw two angels standing by them in shining clothes1 and they were afraid1 and fell on their faces to the ground4 ,then one of the angels said to them1 ',fear not4 ,he is not here2 ,he is risen4' ,illustration3 ,the empty tomb4 ,but ,mary ,magdalene after all had been the first to see ,jesus4 ,she had run off to tell ,peter and ,john that the stone was rolled away4 ,as soon as ,peter and ,john knew that1 they ran off to the grave as fast as they could1 and ,mary ,magdalene went after them4 ,john could run the fastest1 so he got there first1 and just peeped in through the little door in the rock4 ,the angels had gone away1 but he could see the linen bandages4 ,they were not thrown about here and there1 but they were lying neatly together4 ,but when ,peter came up he wanted to see more than that1 and he went straight into the tomb1 and ,john followed him4 ,when ,peter and ,john saw that the body of ,jesus had really gone1 they went away back to the city and told the other disciples4 ,but ,mary ,magdalene did not go back4 ,as she turned away from the grave she saw that somebody was standing near the grave4 ,it was really ,jesus1 but she did not know that4 ,she was too sad to look up4 ,and ,jesus said to her1 ',woman1 why weepest thou8 ,whom seekest thou8' ,mary thought1 ',it is the gardener1' and she said1 ',sir1 if you have carried ,him away1 tell me where you have laid ,him1 and ,i will take ,him away4' ,then ,jesus said1 ',mary4' ,and ,mary turned round quickly1 and said1 ',master4' ,then she saw that it was ,jesus1 and ,he sent her with a message to ,his disciples4 ,so ,mary hurried back again into the city with her good news4 ,she found the disciples1 and when she said1 ',i have seen the ,lord1' they would not believe it4 ,and when some other women who had met ,jesus a little later came in1 and said1 ',we have seen the ,lord1' it was just the same4 ,the disciples only thought1 ',what nonsense these women talk6' ,before the women came in1 two of the disciples had gone for a very long walk4 ,as they walked along1 and talked1 ,jesus came near1 and went with them4 ,while ,jesus talked and the disciples listened1 they came to the village of ,emmaus4 ,that was the end of the disciples' journey1 and now ,jesus began to walk on by ,himself4 ,but the disciples begged ,him to stay with them1 ',abide with us1' they said2 'it is getting late4 ,it will soon be evening4' ,so ,jesus went in1 and sat down at table with them4 ,and ,he took bread in ,his hands1 and blessed it1 and brake it1 and gave it to them4 ,perhaps ,jesus had some special way of saying grace which made the disciples know who ,he was4 ,anyway1 they knew ,him now4 ,and then1 suddenly1 ,he was gone4 ,cleopas and his friend could not keep their good news to themselves4 ,they got up at once1 and went back1 more than seven miles1 to ,jerusalem1 and found a number of the ,lord's friends and disciples sitting together at supper4 ,some of them were saying1 ',,the ,,lord ,,is ,,risen ,,indeed4' ,then ,jesus ,himself came to them1 and ,he told them that it was very wrong not to believe4 ,then1 when ,he saw that they were frightened1 ,he said1 ',peace be unto you1' and ,he showed them ,his hands and ,his feet1 and ate some fried fish and honey which they had put on the table for supper4 ,that was to make them understand that ,his body was really alive as well as ,his soul4 ,and now the disciples were filled with gladness and ,joy4 ,then ,jesus told them the same things that ,he had been explaining to ,cleopas and his friend1 and ,he said to them-- ',,as ,,my ,,father ,,hath ,,sent ,,me1 ,,even ,,so ,,send ,i ,,you4 ,,go ,,ye ,,into ,,all ,,the ,,world1 ,,and ,,preach ,,the ,,gospel ,,to ,,every ,,creature4' ,that is the great missionary text4 ,a missionary means1 you remember1 'one who is sent4' ,that text was meant for you and for me1 as well as for the first disciples of ,jesus4 ,after these things1 the eleven disciples went away to ,galilee1 and waited for ,jesus to meet them there4 ,one day ,thomas and ,nathanael1 and ,james and ,john1 and two other disciples1 were together by the side of the ,sea of ,galilee4 ,peter was there too1 and he always liked to be doing something1 so he said to the others1 ',i go a-fishing4' ,and they said1 ',we will also go with you2' and at once they all jumped into a
