,introduction4--,the occasion for publishing this catalogue of ,philippine earthquakes which were of violent and destructive character has been furnished by a request from ,prof4 ,john ,milne for a list of such phenomena1 to be included in the ,general ,earthquake ,catalogue which this eminent seismologist is preparing under the auspices of the ,british ,association for the ,advancement of ,science4 ,the said general catalogue has been undertaken with a view toward reducing to uniformity and completing those published years ago by ,robert ,mallet 7#ahei7 and ,perrey 7#ahdd-ahga74 ,the form adopted for ,professor ,milne's new catalogue is very concise1 comprising only the date1 intensity1 and region together with principal localities affected4 ,it will contain only the earthquakes of intensities ,,vii to ,x according to the scale of ,de ,rossi-,forel1 and these will be divided into three classes3 ,class ,i will be formed by the earthquakes of sufficient force to produce cracks in buildings and to throw down chimneys2 they correspond to force ,,vii of ,de ,rossi-,forel4 ,class ,,ii consists of the earthquakes which not only threw down chimneys but also walls and some weak structures2 force ,,viii of ,de ,rossi-,forel4 ,class ,,iii comprises the earthquakes which caused general destruction2 force ,,ix and ,x of ,de ,rossi-,forel4 ,as this classification is as purely conventional as every other and adopted only in the catalogue mentioned1 we do not employ it in the present catalogue of ,philippine earthquakes1 but retain the almost universally adopted scale of ,de ,rossi-,forel4 ,we shall also present more details as to the towns and buildings damaged1 the number of victims and other disastrous effects than enter into the catalogue of ,professor ,milne4 ,hence1 the differences between the list prepared for ,professor ,milne as well as the partial catalogue published in our ,monthly ,bulletin for ,february of the present year consist in the following3 7#a7 ,this catalogue contains also several earthquakes whose intensities were between ,,vi and ,,vii1 while in the former only such figure as according to their effects were decidedly of force ,,vii4 7#b7 ,the new catalogue is more complete as to details concerning the towns1 etc41 which have been destroyed4 ,it is to be regretted that we are unable to present here a complete historical catalogue of all the destruction wrought in the ,archipelago by earthquakes since the time when ,legaspi and ,urdaneta first set foot on these shores4 ,but the old chroniclers1 who dwell upon the political happenings with an attention to detail which is occasionally overdone1 were invariably laconic when there was question of earthquakes and similar natural phenomena2 as a rule they were satisfied with mentioning the occurrence in a general and therefore vague way1 without any attempt at precision as to dates and places4 ,still the writers in the ,philippines did nothing worse than imitate their colleagues throughout the rest of the world4 ,this fact is responsible for the great contrast exhibited by our catalogue as regards the number and details of earthquakes which occurred prior to #ahjj1 records of which have been preserved1 and the same data for the period from #ahjj to the present time4 ,this same difference is observable in all catalogues of a similar nature1 even in those which cover phenomena which occurred in ,europe4 ,as to the ,philippine writers1 an additional excuse is found in the peculiar conditions of life in these ,islands4 ,as far as we know1 only two earthquakes which took place during the period which alone can come under consideration--that is1 since the discovery of the ,archipelago--have claimed a considerable number of victims1 and these in the capital1 because outside of ,manila--if we except two or three of the principal cities--the buildings which could become dangerous during an earthquake have always been few4 ,moreover1 in a country in which fires consume every year thousands of dwellings and where the terrible typhoons frequently destroy whole towns with heavy loss of lives1 the damage done by earthquakes has rarely been so great as to impress those occurrences indelibly upon the memory4 ,this is beyond doubt one of the reasons why prior to the beginning of the nineteenth century hardly any data can be found concerning the numerous earthquakes which during the preceding two centuries must have occurred in the ,visayas and above all on the large ,island of ,mindanao4 ,the first earthquake of which the chronicles contain a mention is that of #aeii4 ,there is no reasonable doubt that during the twenty-eight years which had then elapsed since the founding of ,manila by ,legaspi1 several strong and possibly even destructive earthquakes occurred in this part of ,luzon ,island1 but1 as the author of the ,verdadera relacin de la grande destruccin 99 99 99 del ao #afde tells us1 when first founded1 ,manila consisted of wooden houses roofed with a certain kind of palm leaves1 the same which the natives use in their buildings4 ,hence the damage done by these earthquakes must have been insignificant4 ,much more terrible were the losses caused by conflagrations which within a few years twice wiped out the entire city4 ,the first ,bishop of ,manila1 ,domingo de ,salazar1 seeing the city exposed to such general destructions by fire like the one of ,february #ad1 #aehc1 gave the first impulse to the construction of stone buildings and worked indefatigably in this direction4 ,in person he explored the surroundings of ,manila in quest of stone quarries and by the middle of the year #aeia he had nearly finished his palace and the cathedral1 when financial difficulties caused a temporary suspension of the work4 ,at the same time a great number of public and private buildings were under construction4 ,the enthusiasm for structures of stone or brick with tile roofs did not diminish during the next fifty years4 ,the chroniclers tell us that the ,spaniards began to build their houses of stone and tiles without the so necessary precautions against earthquakes4 99 99 99 ,beautiful structures and dwelling houses were reared1 so high and spacious that they resembled palaces2 magnificent churches with lofty and graceful towers1 within the walls of ,manila as well as outside of them3 all of which made the city very beautiful and gay and contributed equally to health and pleasure4 ,the disaster of #afde1 commonly called the earthquake of ,st4 ,andrew1 as it occurred on the feast of this apostle1 ,november #cj1 razed nearly every one of these buildings to the ground1 and since then the style and appearance of buildings has changed greatly throughout the ,archipelago1 with a correspondingly great saving of lives in the subsequent earthquakes4 ,masonry arches were henceforth banished from the churches2 the heavy walls of the latter were further strengthened by massive buttresses2 and the towers were given truly enormous substructures4 ,but even with these precautions there is at present hardly one out of the hundreds of churches built during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries which did not some time or other require important repairs of its masonry work or even partial reconstruction owing to earthquake damages4 ,the only structure of this class which thus far has withstood all convulsions1 is the church of ,st4 ,agustin1 ,manila4 ,nevertheless1 as we have stated before1 the chroniclers hardly mention all this destruction1 except in a very general and cursory manner4 ,i do not hesitate to say3 they were accustomed to see similar havoc created nearly every year in one part of the ,archipelago or the other by some severe typhoon1 accompanied by far greater loss of lives and property1 and consequently much more felt by the people than the destruction of a church1 convento1 municipal building 7tribunal71 one or two bridges1 or other masonry structure4 ,in the present catalogue our aim has been to present all that is known of the various violent and destructive earthquakes on record4 ,the first column of each page contains the ordinal number of the disturbance for purposes of reference4 ,in the second1 the date is given as accurately as it could be ascertained1 ,roman numerals being used to designate the months4 ,unfortunately1 of some earthquakes only the year is known2 of others1 the year and month4 ,of one 7,no4 #cb7 the approximate hour has been recorded1 but not the day of the month2 while of another 7,no4 #ch7 the hour has been preserved for posterity1 but whether the phenomenon occurred during ,february or ,march1 the records leave undecided4 ,in the third column will be found1 in the first place1 the intensity of the disturbance1 ,roman numerals representing the degrees of the scale of ,de ,rossi-,forel 7,i-,x72 then the region affected most1 and finally the damages caused1 if known1 and other information1 if available4 ,in describing the epicentral regions1 the present distribution of the ,archipelago into provinces has been used throughout the catalogue4 ,this division is shown on the first of the two maps of the ,philippines which accompany this catalogue 7,plate ,i74 ,as to the designation ,benguet occasionally occurring in the text where provinces are enumerated1 but not found on the map1 we beg to offer the excuse that the region thus named is exceedingly well known in the ,philippines as it contains ,baguio1 the health resort of the ,islands4 ,for the readers outside of the ,archipelago we remark that ,benguet is at present a subprovince of the ,mountain ,province1 of which it forms the southernmost part4 ,the location of ,baguio is shown on the map on ,plate ,,ii4 ,a similar remark applies to ,lepanto and ,bontoc1 likewise divisions of the ,mountain ,province1 whose capitals1 ,cervantes and ,bontoc1 are indicated on the same map4 ,as we would hardly be justified in assuming that every reader is in possession of a detailed map of the ,philippines1 and a knowledge of the general distribution and the main directions of the principal mountain systems of an earthquake country is important1 we add a second map on which these data are shown by means of dashes1 together with the most important seismic regions1 and the positions of the principal towns1 bays1 etc41 mentioned in the text4 7,plate ,,ii47 ,near the left margin of this second map will be found an index of the seismic regions just mentioned1 each of them being represented by its ordinal number 7large ,roman figures74 ,near each of these ordinals is placed the corresponding number of earthquakes since #ahfb contained in the catalogue 7,arabic figures71 which is followed1 in brackets1 by an analysis of the said number1 in which ,roman figures designate the degrees of the earthquake1 scale of ,de ,rossi-,forel1 while small ,arabic figures1 written like exponents1 give the number of earthquakes of each degree of intensity4 ,in drawing the map on ,plate ,,ii it was not intended to represent the epicentric area of every individual earthquake center 7which would have crowded the map beyond reasonable limits71 but rather to show the principal seismic regions4 ,hence most of these curves contain more than one focus4 ,the approximate position of each of the latter has1 however1 been indicated by a star1 while the figure placed close to the star gives the number of earthquakes which proceeded from the said center4 ,a word must be said in apology for the constant use in the following list of the ,spanish word convento4 ,this word which means monastery1 cloister1 or convent1 is universally used in the ,philippines to designate also the habitation of the clergy attached to a parish church4 ,although these are1 as a rule1 spacious buildings and were formerly inhabited well-nigh exclusively by friars1 they can not properly be called monasteries4 ,wherefore1 in order to avoid lengthy circumlocutions1 the ,spanish word convento has been retained4 ,the reader who is not familiar with this country may find it strange that in reporting earthquake damages so much emphasis appears to be laid on the harm done to churches and conventos4 ,this is easily explained by the fact that these buildings were often the only structures within the meizoseismal area1 and built nearly everywhere in the most substantial manner4 ,in the present catalogue we have also included1 by way of an appendix1 the earthquakes which are known to have occurred in the ,marianas or ,ladrones group of islands4 ,while their number is too small to warrant separate publication1 we believe that the data concerning them will be welcome to the earthquake investigator4 ,,catalogue ,,of ,,violent ,,and affected districts1 as1 for instance1 the church at ,passi1 ,province of ,iloilo1 were badly cracked1 the wooden structures either fell1 owing to the snapping of the uprights1 or remained inclined in various directions4 ,the provinces which suffered most were those of ,iloilo and ,capiz4 #h #afbg ,,viii -- -- -- ,x ,northern ,luzon4 ,the historians mention it as one of the earthquakes which caused the greatest convulsions in northern ,luzon1 especially in ,ilocos ,norte and ,cagayan1 but above all in the region of the ,central ,central ,cordillera1 ,lepanto1 and ,bontoc4 ,the data are somewhat vague4 ,it is said that part of the northern ,caraballo ,mountains subsided4 #i #afbh -- -- -- -- ,,ix ,camarines and ,albay4 ,a destructive earthquake in which1 it is said1 a mountain burst and emitted a river of water and mud which swept away the town of ,camarines and others4 ,the name of ,camarines was at the time used to designate the present town of ,camalig and the district near the southern slopes of ,mayon ,volcano4 ,the flood mentioned was probably an avalanche of water1 sand1 volcanic ashes1 and lapilli1 such as also on other occasions have occurred on the slopes of the same volcano during periods of torrential rains4 ---------------------------------------- ------------------------------- ,no4 ,date4 ,intensity4 ,epicenter and effects4 earthquake1 accompanied by great landslides in the mountains and eruptions of water and mud in the region of northern ,luzon which comprises the ,provinces of the ,ilocos1 of ,cagayan1 and the ,cordillera ,central4 ,all the historians of the ,archipelago mention this cataclysm which occurred shortly after the almost simultaneous eruptions of ,sanguir and ,jolo4 #ab #afde ,,xi #cj #bj -- ,x ,the most terrible earthquake recorded in the annals of the ,archipelago4 ,it might almost be said that from ,manila to ,cagayan and ,ilocos ,norte it left no stone upon the other4 ,in the capital1 where during the preceding fifty years a great number of stone buildings had been erected1 magnificent churches1 palaces1 and public buildings1 as well as private residences and villas1 the destruction was frightful4 ,ten churches were wrecked entirely1 to wit3 the ,royal ,chapel1 ,cathedral1 ,santo ,domingo1 those of the ,recollects and ,franciscans1 ,santiago1 ,san ,antonio1 ,nuestra ,seora de ,guia1 and the parish churches of ,binondo and ,san ,miguel2 only ,san ,agustin and the ,jesuit ,church remained standing4 ,twelve monasteries1 colleges1 and hospitals were likewise converted into ruins4 ,no better fared the palace of the ,governor-,general1 the ,real ,audiencia and up to #aej of the finest residences which1 as one author puts it1 in other cities would have been considerable palaces4 ,the rest of the private houses were damaged to so great an extent that the majority had to be demolished4 ,the number of persons killed exceeded #fjj and the total of killed and injured is stated to have been #c1jjj4 ,outside of ,manila there was a general destruction of villas and other buildings which had been erected on both banks of the ,pasig ,river4 ,throughout the neighboring provinces the masonry structures built by the missionaries suffered the same fate as those in ,manila4 ,from the farthest provinces in the north were reported great alterations of the surface with almost complete disappearance of some native villages1 changes in the courses of rivers1 subsidences of plains1 eruptions of sand1 etc4 ,all the writers of the time qualify this disturbance as the most disastrous earthquake not only in ,luzon1 but likewise in ,mindoro1 ,marinduque1 and the other islands south of ,luzon4 ,on the other hand1 the provinces of ,camarines and ,albay appear to have suffered little or nothing4 #ac #afde ,,xii #e #bc -- ,,viii ,the earthquake of ,november #cj was followed by almost daily repetitions and countless aftershocks1 one of which1 on ,december #e1 was of such intensity as to finish the wrecking of many buildings1 leaving as a chronicler writes the city in such condition that it was impossible to walk through it4 ,aftershocks of likewise to the archiepiscopal palace1 the ,jesuit ,college1 and a considerable number of private buildings4 ,the epicentral region appears to have included only the southern part of ,luzon4 #ah #affe
