,britain and ,ireland4 ,it has frequently been observed1 how nearly the number of deaths in each year has approximated1 but we have this year to notice a considerable diminution in the annual return4 ,we are not disposed1 however1 to attribute the diminished numbers1 chiefly to any special cause connected with health1 but consider it rather as one of those fluctuations which are ever found to arise in a series of years1 in the mortality of a small community4 ,the number of the dying1 however1 may be expected to bear1 as respects the average1 a pretty uniform relation to the number of the living4 ,and if the fact be1 as all our late inquiries lead us to believe it is1 that we are1 though slowly1 a diminishing body1 we must expect that our average number of deaths will also be found gradually to diminish4 ,we have often anxiously pondered over the question1--,why the ,society of ,friends should be a diminishing body8 ,and we propose to give in this place a few of the thoughts which have been suggested to us in the course of our consideration4 ,in the first place1 let us notice the natural causes which tend to the decrease of our ,society4 ,we have formerly shown that the mortality among our members is less than in the community at large1 which so far as it extends1 is of course a reason for the increase rather than the diminution of our numbers4 ,but then we have1 on the other side1 the well- ascertained fact1 that whilst in the community at large1 the registered births exceed the deaths1 by #de per cent2 in the ,society of ,friends1 the registered deaths actually exceed the births6 ,the cause of this fact is to be found1 not only in connection with the number who marry out of the ,society1 but also in the operation of that prudential check on entering into the married state1 which will always prevail amongst a moral people1 where the means of subsistence cannot easily and with certainty be obtained4 ,but to whatever we may attribute the cause1 the fact itself is a complete answer to the question--,why we are a diminishing rather than an increasing people8 ,it may be said1--,why are not our religious principles aggressive8--,why1 if they be true1 do they not find converts among the various ,christian communities of our land8--,why1 as in the early times of our ,society1 are there not numerous conversions1 and fresh bodies of warm-hearted1 and sound-minded believers1 added to our numbers8--,these are deeply important and very interesting questions1 and we are willing to offer a few thoughts upon them1 with the seriousness and modesty with which it becomes us to speak on the subject4 ,we believe1 that a mistaken view prevails1 in regard to the truest ,christian principle being that which will be accepted by the largest number of persons4 ,the experience of all the past ages of the ,church contradicts the assumption1 and shows clearly that there is in man a deep- seated opposition to the acceptance of divine truth in its purity and simplicity4 ,true vital religion has ever called for the service of man's heart to ,god1 and in every age1 this allegiance has been the state of the few1 rather than of the many4 ,the history of the ancient church is full of illustrations of this truth4 ,whilst ,moses lingered on the ,mount1 whence the children of ,israel knew that the law was to be given1 and from whence such evident demonstrations of the divine power had been manifest to the people1 they were employed in making the golden calf to go before them1 and crying these are thy ,gods1 ,o ,israel6 ,and when they had received the law1 written by the finger of ,god1 and were somewhat humbled under the correction of their sins1 how few were there1 who carried out its injunctions in their genuine spirit1 and how many were there1 who from time to time1 defiled themselves by the idolatrous service of other gods4 ,even when brought by a strong hand1 and an outstretched arm1 attended by many palpable miracles which were wrought on their behalf1 they were seated in the ,land flowing with milk and honey1 which had been promised to their fathers2 how prone were they constantly to desert even the profession of their faith1 and to serve the gods of the nations which they were sent to destroy2 yet in all these times there were a few1 and it was probably comparatively but a few1 who had not bowed the knee to ,baal4 ,we have evidence of the same fact in the history of ,christianity4 ,the beautiful example of the ,saviour1 and the wonderful miracles which he performed--all for the good of man--failed to attract the high boasted reason of the ,greek1 or the ,roman1 or to soften the obduracy of the blind and hard ,pharisaic hearted ,jew3 it was still the few who had sympathy with the character ,he exhibited1 and the truths which ,he spoke1 and who found ,him to be to their souls the power of ,god unto salvation4 ,and even when these few were gathered together1 and under the extraordinary effusion of the ,holy ,spirit1 many were added to them1 and the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and one soul1 they were still comparatively but a few4 ,the further history of the ,christian ,church may appear to some to exhibit a different view1 but to us it seems not less clearly to illustrate the same melancholy truth4 ,it is certain1 that during the life-time of the ,apostles1 many by their powerful preaching1 under the influence of the ,holy ,spirit1 were brought to repentance and a living faith in ,christ1 and we know that not a few sealed their testimony with their blood1 yet the simplicity and the purity of ,christianity were soon more or less spoiled by the still contracted spirit and notions of many of the ,jews1 or the false philosophy1 not entirely abandoned1 of the pagan converts4 ,we doubt not1 however1 that notwithstanding these deteriorating admixtures1 there may be said to have been many--aye1 a glorious multitude--who held the truth in its primitive power1 and in a large measure of primitive simplicity4 ,still1 when these are compared with the whole population of the countries where the ,truth was preached1 the real converts must be spoken of as a few1 and thus was it evident that there was still an inherent opposition in man to the restraining and purifying doctrines of the gospel of ,christ4 ,and when in later years1 whole nations and peoples were said to become ,christians1 it may well be doubted whether in such times there had not been as great a reduction of the number of true converts of old standing1 as there was addition of this class amongst the new ones4 ,christianity as professed in those days1 had thrown off her simple garb1 and had decorated herself to please the corrupt taste of the people--as the sun and other heavenly bodies were probably the earliest objects of adoration to mankind1 and were used in the first instance as striking symbols of the light and power of the one ,creator and ,father1 so did the professors of ,christianity1 pretty early present to the people1 some intermediate objects of reverence and love1 by which those who turned from the simple affiance to the one ,great ,redeemer and ,high ,priest1 might find a rest suited to their carnal1 or at least imperfectly spiritual conception of ,christianity4 ,and when the temporal church boasted of its universal sway in ,europe1 and its entire unity1 there were probably a smaller number of true ,christians within its pale1 than existed in the midst of pagan persecutions at the close of the apostolic age4 ,let us now look at times nearer to our own1 when ,huss1 and ,luther1 and ,zwingle1 by a power not their own1 caused many rays of the glorious light of ,truth to shine upon benighted nations1 and disturbed the slumbers of the corrupted church4 ,great were1 and still are the blessings derived from the great struggle4 ,many of the bonds of ,satan were broken1 and many a heavy burdened soul found its long desired rest4 ,yet how soon was even the brightness of this morning dimmed1 and how little progress did the cause of the ,reformation make after the departure of the immediate instruments in the great movement4 ,in ,switzerland1 not inaptly called the cradle of the ,english ,reformation1 the ,cantons which1 in the first instance received the truth and joined the ,protestant cause1 continue still to bear the same name1 but not one which at that time retained the designation of ,catholic1 has since become ,protestant3 and at ,geneva1 where ,calvin taught1 and where his doctrines are still professed1 opinions which were not less abhorrent to him than the worst of the errors of popery1 are openly maintained4 ,those who now preach the vital truths of the ,reformation1 are the few not the many4 ,in ,england1 the iron rule of ,elizabeth in ecclesiastical matters1 and in particular her requirement of uniformity with respect to the rags of ,rome1 checked the real progress of the ,reformation in the ,english church1 but by a reaction which in the ordering of ,divine ,wisdom1 often makes the wrath of man to praise him1 it appears to have been the means of raising up an increased antagonism to error1 in the persons of men willing to suffer and to die for the cause of truth4 ,it will perhaps be admitted that at many periods of the history of what is called the ,english church1 whilst its nominal members numbered a large proportion of the whole population1 the actual number of the genuine disciples of ,christ within its pale were in small compass4 ,the revival in some measure1 of the spirit of its reformers1 even in opposition to the letter of many of its formularies1 has1 no doubt1 in past times1 done much to increase its living influence and usefulness1 but recent events have shown how large a portion of its clergy instead of going forward in the work of the ,reformation1 are rather desirous of retrograde movement1 and of approximating1 if not of entirely returning to the errors of ,rome4 ,such1 we ought ever to bear in mind1 is the natural tendency of man1 and so prone is he1 even when raised by the ,true ,light to a perception of the things which are most excellent1 to sink again into the grovelling habits of his own dark nature4 ,we come now to the threshold of our own religious history1 and shall endeavour to answer1 in substance at least1 the queries with which we commenced the present inquiry4 ,it was certainly an extraordinary period of our national religious history1 in which the ,society of ,friends arose--a time in which old foundations were shaken1 and an earnest inquiry excited in many minds after the way of truth and of real peace to the soul4 ,we think that it is not assuming1 to express our belief1 that a remarkable extension of spiritual light and energy was extended to the people of ,england1 in that day1 when ,george ,fox1 and his early associates1 went forth through the length and breadth of the land1 and found so extraordinary a preparation for their service in the hearts of their fellow-countrymen4 ,the first preachers knew a being made ,christians themselves1 before they went forth to call others to ,christ--what a deep sense of sin and of its hatefulness in the sight of ,god--what earnestness1 or rather agonizing in prayer--what joy in the sense of the true knowledge of ,christ1 and of communion with him in ,spirit--what subsequent watchfulness and reliance upon him in every step of their course--what zeal in making known the truth which they had found1 and what constancy in suffering for it1 yea thinking it all joy that they were counted worthy to suffer for the name of ,christ6--,such were the men who were heralds of our religious ,society1 and by whose instrumentality thousands at least1 were convinced of the truth2 large numbers of whom gave evidence that they were not only convinced1 but converted to ,god4 ,need we then wonder at their success8 though still compared with the numbers to which they preached1 the converts may be said to have been few4 ,it was still the many1 who if brought to see as it were their face in a glass1 went away and straightway forgot what manner of men they were4 ,we believe that the number of persons who went under the name of ,friends1 in ,great ,britain and ,ireland1 at the close of the #agth century1 was at least three times as great as it is at the present time4 ,it will be in accordance with our object1 to endeavour to indicate what may have been the chief causes of the suspension of those active measures which we have called aggressive1--though full of love1 and which marked the early periods of our ,society4 ,an historian of the church1 who was not insensible of what constitutes true religious energy1 has stated1 that extraordinary revivals of this kind1 have rarely been maintained in their primitive vigour more than about forty years4 ,rather more than that time elapsed between the commencement of ,george ,fox's labours and their close1 at the time of his death4 ,about eight days previous to that event1 he attended a meeting of ministers1 in ,london1 and one of those who was present says3 ,i much minded his exhortation to us1 encouraging friends that have gifts to make use of them2 mentioning many countries beyond the seas that wanted visiting1 instancing the labours and hard travels of friends in the beginning of the spreading of truth in our days1 in breaking up of countries1 and of the rough ploughing they had in steeple houses1 c41 but that now it was more easy2 and he complained1 that there were many ,demases and ,cains who embraced the present world1 and encumbered themselves with their own business1 and neglected the ,lord's1 and so were good for nothing2 and he said1 they that had wives1 should be as though they had none2 and who goeth a warfare should not entangle himself with the things of this world4 ,this characteristic extract will suggest1 probably1 to many readers1 our object in quoting it4 ,if there was cause for the reproof conveyed in it in that day1 in which we know the primitive zeal still burned brightly1 what must we say of the subsequent1 and of the present state of our little church6 ,long after the death of ,george ,fox1 there continued to be a large increase to the numbers of friends2 many who had been wise and great in this world1 were made to rejoice in the laying down of their outward wisdom1 and in sitting down in deep humility to learn of ,jesus1 by the teaching of the ,holy ,spirit in the heart4 ,these were prepared boldly to declare ,god's controversy with sin1 and the means by which it might be subdued1 not omitting to proclaim the alone ground of a sinner's pardon through the propitiatory sacrifice of our ,lord and ,saviour ,jesus ,christ4 ,we believe certainly that it has never been permitted to our ,society to be without its faithful labourers in the gospel1 or without many sincere confessors of its doctrines1 who1 by life and conversation1 have been true preachers to their brethren1 and to the world in general4 ,yet we must confess1 that whilst as a ,society1 we continue to profess the same religious views as were held and promulgated by our early ,friends1 we fear we do not come up in practice to that pure standard to which they attained4 ,the door is open to all the world1 yet we sit at ease in our ceiled houses4 ,many around us are hungering and thirsting for the knowledge of ,god1 yet we are occupied with our farms and our merchandise4 ,let us not be inquiring1 ,what shall this man do1 or what should the other have done8 but remembering the reproof1 ,what is that to thee1 follow thou ,me1 submit ourselves to that humbling1 but preparing hand1 which was so signally displayed in the cause of those who were engaged in the planting and watering of our religious ,society4 ,then might we again hope to witness an increase of spiritual life and vigour in the body1 and thus become as a city set upon a hill1 that could not be hid4 ,,the ,he was one who remembered his ,creator in the days of his youth1 and who proved in his own experience1 that the fear of the ,lord is not only the beginning of wisdom1 but that it is also a fountain of life preserving from the snares of death4 ,his earnest desire was to be found walking acceptably before ,god2 and while a young man1 he became greatly distressed at being overcome by drowsiness in meetings for worship4 ,on one occasion1 when this had been the case1 he retired to a secluded spot1 under a hedge1 where1 with many tears1 he poured forth his prayers for deliverance from this besetment4 ,many years afterwards1 when accompanying a friend on a religious visit to the families of that meeting1 he pointed out the place1 and remarked with expressions of gratitude1 that from that time1 he did not remember having been overcome in the same manner4 ,he was deeply impressed with the words of his ,saviour3 ,all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you1 do ye even so to them1 and he so carried this precept out into practice1 as to become remarkable for his uprightness of character1 and for his consideration for others4 ,the following circumstances present instructive examples of the kindly sympathy of this good ,samaritan3 ,on the occurrence of a malignant fever1 in one of the eastern dales of ,yorkshire1 while he resided in that district1 he left his own home for several weeks1 to nurse some of his neighbours who had become affected with the disease1 devoting his whole time to the sick1 while dread of infection rendered it difficult for him to obtain assistance in this office of mercy4 ,after his removal into the neighbourhood of ,york1 and at a time when many persons were returning past his premises from a contested ,election1 and some of them so much intoxicated as to be incapable of taking care of themselves2 fearing lest any severe accident should befall them while in this condition1 he took several of them from the highway1 and lodged them in one of his outhouses1 dismissing them on the following morning with suitable but kind admonition4 ,and when numbers of the ,irish poor were driven from their own country by famine1 and wandered about in this land for lack of bread1 he sheltered many of them in his out-buildings and ministered to their necessities4 ,george ,baker occupied the station of ,elder for many years1 exercising a fatherly care in the church1 and extending counsel or encouragement1 as he saw occasion1 with a simplicity and godly sincerity which gave him great place amongst his friends4 ,he was often applied to by his neighbours for counsel1 and as a peace-maker2 and in serving them was remarkable for his patience1 self-denial1 and success4 ,in his latter years1 his powers both of body and mind failed greatly1 in consequence of an accident which he met with1 while in the pursuit of his occupation as a farmer2 but having worked while it was day1 he was preserved through a period which might be spoken of as a night1 in which no man could work2 so that love1 that badge of discipleship with ,christ1 shone brightly in his last moments1 as from under the margin of a dark cloud1 and a solemn lived to a good old age1 and who have been loved and honoured in their respective stations1 as upright pillars in the church1 have left but few written memorials of their course for the instruction of others2 whilst encompassed with infirmities1 and looking for the help of the ,lord's ,spirit to resist their manifold temptations and easily besetting sins1 they have been enabled to pursue the even tenor of their way1 seeking through divine grace to fulfil the day's work1 in the day time1 and hoping to hear at last the call of mercy into one of the many mansions prepared by ,him1 who has loved his hand of affliction upon this dear friend1 and after a severe illness of about four weeks1 to gather her1 as we reverently believe1 into the rest which remaineth for the people of ,god4 ,it appears1 that in early life1 the grace which bringeth salvation1 wrought effectually in her heart1 so that her surviving relatives cannot recall the time when the fear of ,god did not influence her conduct2 her pious mother1 who for many years filled the station of ,elder in our ,society2 was deeply interested in the religious welfare of her children1 and earnestly sought1 in the morning of their day1 to imbue their minds with the principles and precepts of the gospel of ,christ1 and her labours of love in reference to this beloved daughter were graciously owned4 ,from her childhood1 she was more than commonly dutiful and affectionate to her parents1 rarely giving them any cause for uneasiness2 an aged grandmother also1 who resided for many years with them1 she waited on with such tender care1 as to call forth the expression of her belief1 that a blessing would rest on her on that account4 ,great meekness1 tenderness1 and humility clothed her mind1 not only throughout the season of her affliction1 but for a long course of previous years1 binding her in very tender bonds to her husband and children1 as well as to her other endeared relatives and friends4 ,it appears1 from the first day on which her illness assumed a more serious character1 that an impression pervaded her mind1 that it would be unto death1 and accompanying this impression1 a deep and earnest desire for entire resignation to the divine will2 and this desire was graciously answered2 for during the period of her illness1 her resignation1 and consequent tranquillity1 were indeed remarkable2 attended by a precious measure of the peace of ,god which passeth all understanding4 ,so fully was this the case1 and so little of the appearance of death accompanied her illness1 that a lively hope of her restoration to health1 was1 even to the last day of her life1 earnestly cherished by those around her1 and in addition to this1 such was the nature of her disease1 that great stillness and uninterrupted rest were considered necessary2 thus circumstanced1 whilst both her mind1 and their minds1 were abundantly satisfied with the precious evidence of the love of ,god in ,christ ,jesus1 shed abroad in her heart1 they were not anxious for much expression1 or careful to commit to writing what1 from season to season1 fell from her lips2 feeling that her mind wore thanksgiving to her ,maker4 ,she evinced1 throughout her married life1 a deep interest in the well- being of her tenderly beloved children1 making it her frequent practice to spend some portion of her time in retirement with them1 in reading the holy scriptures and in prayer2 and this interest increasingly appeared as she lay on the bed of affliction1 having them daily in her chamber1 and again and again1 in tender affection1 impressing on their minds the importance of divine and eternal things1 urging them to walk in the way of ,god's commandments1 and to regard his favour and approbation as the one thing1 beyond all other things1 necessary both to their present peace and everlasting salvation3 similar counsel was also extended to the other members of her household and family1 to the friends who kindly visited her1 to her medical attendants1 and to her neighbours4 ,more might be said in reference to the ,christian graces which marked the character of this beloved friend1 but the object is not to magnify the creature1 but to set forth the excellency and sufficiency of the grace which is from ,god our ,father1 and the ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 and by the effectual operation of which1 she was what of friends4 ,she was the only and much beloved child of her bereaved parents2--naturally of a most amiable disposition1 and of that lively temperament which gives a peculiar zest to life and all its passing enjoyments1 she diffused around her somewhat of the buoyancy and sunshine which seemed ever to attend her own steps4 ,thus attractive and admired1 and drinking largely of the cup of present pleasures1 the thoughts of the future appear to have had but little place in her mind4 ,in a state of excellent health1 she had gone to ,mountmelick to pass a few weeks with some near relatives1 when she was seized with the disorder which1 in a few hours1 closed her life4 ,those hours were passed in much bodily suffering1 but sorer still were the conflicts of her mind4 ,the scales which had prevented her from seeing the real worth of life and the awful realities of the future1 at once fell from her eyes1 and she saw or rather felt with indescribable clearness1 that the great truths which appertain to the welfare of the soul belong alike to the young and the healthy1 to the sick and the dying4 ,she saw that she had been living to herself and not to ,god1 and this1 whatever particulars she might lament1 was the heavy burden of her awakened spirit4 ,in the depths of contrition1 and in the earnestness of faith1 she was enabled to pray to her heavenly ,father1 and ,saviour1 to draw near and to have mercy upon her4 ,thus passed some hours never to be forgotten4 ,the rapid progress of her disease hardly allowed time for much further mental exercise or expression4 ,she sank into a state of quietude of body and of mind4 ,and when all was over1 the sorrowing parents were condoled in the hope1 that the prayers of their beloved child had been heard1 through the mercy of ,him who never turned away his ear from the truly repentant suppliant4 ,what lessons does this brief narrative offer to survivors4 ,awfully does it speak to the children of pleasure1 of the inestimable value of the soul--of the importance of time--of the folly of living in forgetfulness of ,god1 and unmindful of their high destiny as immortal beings4 ,what a light does it throw on the responsibility of parents2 and whilst affording no encouragement to delay in the hope of a death-bed repentance1 what a view does it open of the infinite mercy of our heavenly ,father in ,christ ,jesus4 ,,martha #ahej ,,richard ,,horsnaill1 ,dover4 #dh #gmo4 #bc #ahej ,in endeavouring to pursue faithfully the path of manifested duty1 we believe it was peculiarly the aim of this dear friend1 to do justly1 to love mercy1 and to walk humbly with his ,god4 ,he was of a very diffident disposition1 and cautious in giving expression to his religious feelings1 lest he should thereby make a profession beyond what he thought his attainments warranted4 ,for many years he laboured under a disease1 which was attended with much suffering2 but this proved a means of weaning him from the world and its pursuits1 and of inducing him more earnestly to seek first the kingdom of ,god and his righteousness1 with the unshaken belief that all things necessary would be added4 ,he manifested a deep interest in the prosperity of our religious ,society1 and according to his measure1 especially in the latter part of his life1 willingly devoted himself to its service4 ,he likewise took great delight in promoting the best interests of the juvenile portion of the population in the neighbourhood in which he resided2 and the counsel he gave to those of this class1 often gained their good will and respectful attention4 ,he also exhibited a very humane disposition toward the animal creation1 and rarely allowed a case of ill-treatment or oppression to pass without attempting to redress the wrongs inflicted4 ,for some years1 he took great interest in supplying the crews of foreign vessels1 resorting to the port of ,dover1 with copies of the holy ,scriptures and religious tracts2 and from his kind and unassuming manners1 his efforts were almost universally well received4 ,his last illness1 of four months' duration1 was attended with extreme bodily suffering2 but the nature of his complaint being very obscure1 he entertained a hope that he might be restored to his former state of health1 and expressed some anxiety for length of days1 in order that he might be more useful to his fellow-creatures4 ,but as his strength declined1 this desire gave way to quiet submission to the will of his ,god2 and it was evident1 that his soul was anchored upon that ,rock1 which alone can support in the hour of trial4 ,soon after he was taken ill1 he remarked in allusion to his business1 that he had thought it right in one instance1 to decline the execution of an order1 where more display of taste was required1 than he could feel satisfied with2 and this sacrifice1 with some others of a similar kind1 had afforded him peace3 adding1 ,i do want to come clean out of ,babylon4 ,he said1 the language had been much upon his mind3 ,purge me with hyssop1 and ,i shall be clean2 wash me1 and ,i shall be whiter than snow3 and also the words of our ,saviour1--,if ,i wash thee not1 thou hast no part with me4 ,being in great pain1 he said1--,you must pray for me1 that my patience may hold out2 ,i have indeed need of your prayers1 for my sufferings are very great2 but1 bye and bye1 perhaps ,i may be able to say1 ,i have not had one pang too many4 ,at another time1 he supplicated thus3 ,merciful ,father1 be pleased to grant me a little ease1 ,o6 ,thou that makest the storm a calm1 and sayest to the waves1 ,peace be still4 ,soon after which he lay quiet2 and whilst tears of gratitude flowed down his cheeks1 he said1 ,do not disturb me2 all is stillness1--what a mercy6 ,on one occasion1 when feeling exceedingly depressed1 he remarked1 that the vessels he had visited1 and the poor sailors were brought mentally to view1 one after another1 with much sweetness1 and whilst he took no merit to himself1 he desired to encourage others to do what they could for the good of the poor4 ,at another time1 after giving instructions to one of his sisters1 to make some selection of tracts for the sailors on board a ,german vessel1 then lying in the harbour1 he observed3 ,oh1 what a field of labour there is6 how ,i do wish that some one would take this up1 for ,i feel as though ,i should be able to do very little more in it4 ,his mind1 during his illness1 seemed filled with love and gratitude4 ,he remarked1 ,i never felt so much love before1 both to my family and friends2 ,i do believe this illness will bind us more closely together than ever4 ,and again3 ,oh1 how kind you are to wait upon me so2 the ,lord will reward you6 ,at another time1 he said1 ,i had not thought to have been taken at this time of my life1 but ,i am in such a critical state1 that life hangs on a thread2--the pains of the body are what ,i seem most to dread4 ,on inquiring one day1 where that line was to be found1 ,at ease in his possessions1 he remarked1 ,i do not think ,i have been at ease in mine1 ,i have endeavoured to live loose to them4 ,a hope being expressed that his illness would be sanctified to him1 he quickly replied1 ,yes1 and not to me only1 but to all of you4 ,he gave some directions1 in the event of his death1 with much composure1 observing3 ,it seems an awful thing for me to say thus much1 but a great favour to be so free from anxiety4 ,in the night he was heard to say3 ,no merit of mine1 it is all of mercy1 free unmerited mercy6 ,on a young man in his employment coming to assist him1 previous to going to his own place of worship1 when about to leave the room1 he thus addressed him3 ,mind and make a good use of the time1 and do not be afraid of looking into thy own heart1 but suffer the witness to come in and speak1 whether it be in the language of encouragement or reproof4 ,many persons go to their places of worship1 where much of the time is spent in singing and in music1 which please the outward ear1 but this is not religion6 ,it is when we are brought to see ourselves as we really are1 sinners in the sight of a holy ,god1 that we are led to seek a ,saviour1 and to cry1 in sincerity1 ',a ,saviour1 or ,i die6 ,a ,redeemer1 or ,i perish for ever6' ,on its being remarked to him1 that it was consolingly believed1 he was one of those who had endeavoured to occupy with his talent1 which1 if only one1 it was hoped1 had gained an increase1 he replied1--,that will only be known at the great day of account1 when weighed in the balance4 ,on ,seventh-day evening preceding his decease1 he remarked to a beloved relative1 that it seemed the safest for him to say but little in regard to his own attainments1 adding1--,my desire is1 for a continuance of kind preservation4 ,and on the day before his death1 he remarked with gratitude1 that his intellects had been preserved clear throughout his illness4 ,during the night1 he was much engaged in prayer2 his bodily powers were fast sinking1 but his mind appeared preserved in peaceful serenity4 ,in the morning1 he expressed a desire that his sister would remain by him1 affectionately inquired for his father1 and soon after1 we reverently believe1 exchanged a state of suffering for one of never-ending rest and joy1 in the everlasting kingdom of our ,lord and ,saviour ,jesus was much beloved and esteemed1 as being one of a very innocent and blameless life4 ,some of the circumstances relating to her1 are of a very affecting and interesting character1 and speak loudly the uncertainty of all earthly prospects4 ,in the summer of last year1 she entered into an engagement of marriage with a friend residing in ,england4 ,having considered the subject with earnest and sincere desires to act in accordance with best wisdom1 she looked forward to the completion of the prospect with a pleasing and hopeful confidence1 yet even at an early period of the engagement1 there was something that seemed to whisper to her1 the uncertainty of its completion4 ,at this time she appeared in her usual health and full of spirits2 but whilst on a visit to her aunt1 at ,kingstown1 her health became affected1 and from this time1 symptoms exhibited themselves1 which baffled all medical skill4 ,she was still1 however1 hopeful respecting her own recovery1 and very often expressed in her correspondence1 how much she was pained by the thought of being the cause of so much anxiety to others1--that her own sufferings were trifling1 and the comforts surrounding her so numerous1 she felt that she had every thing to be thankful for4 ,it was1 however1 evident to those around her1 that there was little ground for hope1 and a dear friend intimated to her1 that her medical advisers considered her end might possibly be very near4 ,this intelligence greatly startled her1 but she afterward expressed1 how thankful she felt that she had been honestly apprized of her danger4 ,the solemn impression then made on her mind1 never left her1 and her constant desire was1 that she might1 through divine mercy1 be made meet for the kingdom of heaven1 repeating emphatically1 ,i have much to do4 ,she often expressed her great sorrow1 that she had not yielded to the serious impressions with which she had been favoured1 saving1 ,they were soon scattered2 and regretted much that she had not lived a more devoted life4 ,she felt herself to be a great sinner1 needing a ,saviour's gracious pardon2 and for a long time feared she never should obtain that forgiveness1 she so earnestly longed for4 ,but though her faith was feeble1 she endeavoured to lay hold of encouragement from the mercy extended to the ,prodigal ,son1 and to the ,thief upon the cross1 hoping that the same mercy might be extended to herself2 but for a long time1 her poor tossed and tried mind could find nothing to lean upon4 ,she remarked1 she could not feel that she had sinned against her fellow-creatures1 but that she could adopt the words of the ,psalmist3 ,against ,thee1 ,thee only1 have ,i sinned1 saying1 ,i feel that ,i have nothing to build upon1 and that ,i want every thing2 ,i am not prepared to die1 ,i want all my sins to be forgiven2 ,i hope ,i shall not be taken till the work be fully accomplished4 ,the whole of the #east ,psalm1 she said1 seemed to suit her case1 and with solemnity repeated1 ',create in me a clean heart1 oh ,god6 and renew a right spirit within me4' ,if ,i am saved1 it will indeed be at the eleventh hour1 ,i have been such a sinner4 ,thus did the ,spirit of ,truth search all things1 and bring this beloved friend sensibly to feel1 as she weightily expressed1 that at such a solemn hour1 it will not do to build upon having led a spotless and innocent life1 something more is then wanted to lean upon4 ,she often observed1 how well it was for those who had given up their hearts to serve their ,saviour in the time of health1--that had she done so1 she should not now1 in the hour of trial1 have had to feel such deep sorrow of heart1--that she could only hope for mercy and forgiveness1 adding1 ,if ,i perish1 let it be at ,thy footstool4 ,as her bodily weakness increased1 she remarked1 ,i often feel unable to read1 or even to think2 but ,i can cling2 this is about as much as ,i am able to do4 ,though this beloved friend took these low views of her own state1 her company was deeply instructive and edifying to those around her1 and a heavenly sweetness marked her deportment4 ,her heart was often filled with gratitude to her heavenly ,father for the extension of his love and mercy1 and she remarked many times1 ,i have indeed been mercifully dealt with4 ,the dear sufferer rapidly declined2 yet her mind continued bright1 and she was preserved in a patient1 waiting state1 fully conscious of the approach of death1 she queried how long it was thought likely she might live8 praying1--,oh6 dear ,saviour1 may it please thee not to take me till the work be fully accomplished4 ,she often said1 ,it is a solemn thing to die2 and the evening preceding her death1 when her friends were watching around her1 she remarked that1 believing her end was near1 ,it felt very1 very solemn to her4 ,at this deeply interesting season1 ,he who is indeed ,love1 condescended in great mercy to draw near1 so that she seemed lifted above terrestrial things1 and permitted a foretaste of those joys1 of which we consolingly believe1 she now fully participates4 ,under this precious influence1 her countenance beamed with sweetness1 and she emphatically repeated many times1--,divine compassion6 mighty love6 and raising her hand1 exclaimed1 ,oh such love6--such love6--and to me such a sinner2 is it not marvellous8 adding1 a weary burdened soul1 oh ,lord1 am ,i1 but the blood of ,jesus can wash the guilty sinner clean4--,though ,i walk through the valley of the shadow of death1 ,i will fear no evil4--,oh how wonderful6 hard things have been made easy1 and bitter things sweet4 ,she remarked that1 at such a solemn hour1 the world had no relish1 oh no6 she said1 it is not worth a thought3 ',the world recedes1 it disappears1 ,heaven opens on my eyes1 my ears4' ,to a young friend whom she tenderly loved1 she said1 ,oh if we should all meet in heaven1 will it not be delightful8 oh6 dear ---1 we must all come to this1 and nothing will do for any of us but the blood of the ,lamb4 ,she continued for some time addressing those around her in this strain2 and to the question of her brother1 whether she was happy8 she replied1 ,yes1 indeed1 ,i am happy4 ,thus her dying lips seemed to testify1 that she was mercifully brought to see the salvation of ,god1 and that he is able to save to the uttermost all those who come unto him1 ,nantwich2 but he was taken ill in the former meeting1 and though relieved by medical aid1 it failed to remove disease1 which continued daily to waste his frame1 and in little more than three weeks terminated his earthly pilgrimage2 and we thankfully believe1 through redeeming mercy1 translated the immortal spirit to an inheritance incorruptible1 undefiled1 and that fadeth not away4 ,he had long been a very useful and willing helper in the small ,quarterly ,meeting1 of which he was a member2 and a true sympathizer with the afflicted1 taking heed to the apostolic injunction1 ,bear ye one anothers burdens1 and so fulfil the law of ,christ4 ,deep and fervent were his desires for the welfare of our ,society1 for the maintenance of all our religious testimonies1 and that its members might be redeemed from the influence and spirit of the world4 ,in the early part of his illness1 he remarked that it was surprising to himself1 how entirely he could leave all earthly things2 he had desired to leave all to ,him who doeth all things well2 and to commit himself into the hands of his dear ,saviour4 ,at another time1 he said1 ,i am very gently and mercifully dealt with1 ,i feel that ,i am a to this name1 the desire is simply to arrest the attention of any reader1 who may be too closely engaged in temporal things2 giving their strength to that which cannot profit1 and not sufficiently pondering the passing nature of all terrestrial things4 ,william ,newsom had been extensively engaged in commerce through great part of his life1 and there was reason to fear he was unduly absorbed by its cares and allurements3 for the last year or more1 he appeared to be becoming more sensible that disappointment was stamped upon his pursuits2 his bodily health heretofore unbroken1 began also to decline1 and it was comfortingly believed by his friends1 that this and other revolving circumstances1 were tending to turn the energies of his mind from perishable1 to imperishable objects4 ,a few months before his decease1 it became still more evident1 that the hand of his heavenly ,father was laid upon him in mercy2 and on one occasion1 he remarked1 that he saw nothing in the world worth living for1 it abounded in trouble and disappointment1 all outward things were stained in his eyes1 there was nothing but religion that could be of any avail for any of us2 and it mattered not when we were taken--young1 old1 or middle aged--if we were but ready1 that was the great point6 ,his experience1 however1 during the last few days of his life shewed1 that although the ground might have been prepared1 the work was by no means effected2 deep and sore conflict was then his portion1 and oh6 with what fervency did he call upon his ,saviour1 beseeching him in his mercy to be pleased to look down upon his poor unworthy creature1 for he alone could help in that awful hour4 ,once he exclaimed1 what could all the world do for me now8 ,his wife1 under great exercise of spirit1 replied1 ,nothing6 the best1 when laid upon such a bed as thou art1 have nothing to look to or depend upon1 but the mercy of the ,saviour2 the poor sufferer earnestly pleaded that that mercy might be extended to him1 remarking1 ,he has all power in heaven and in earth4 ,he then fervently prayed that the ,lord would save his never dying soul4 ,it is believed1 that whilst his many sins of omission and commission were brought vividly before his view1 by the unflattering witness1 he was made very fully sensible that the great work of salvation rests between the soul of man and his ,creator1 and that no man can redeem his brother1 or give to ,god a ransom for him4 ,through the night1 he was mostly engaged in prayer1 with uplifted hands invoking for mercy and forgiveness4 ,some time before his death1 the great conflict of mind he had been under1 appeared to subside1 and to be succeeded by a sweet calm1 and he intimated to his wife1 that he felt comfortable and satisfied4 ,till within half an hour of the close1 prayer continued flowing from his lips1 the last audible sounds being an appeal to the ,lord2 and but a few minutes before he ceased to breathe1 a conscious look at his dear wife1 seemed to say1 all is peace2 and it was granted to her exercised spirit to believe1 that the unshackled soul when released1 was received into a mansion of rest1 through the mercy and merits of his ,lord and ,saviour4 ,in reference to that impressive hour this dear relative writes1--,oh6 how many times that solemn night1 did ,i long that all the world could feel the great necessity1 whilst in health and strength1 so to live1 as to be prepared for that awful hour1 which sooner or later must come upon us all2 it is a very dangerous thing to put off the work of the soul's salvation to a deathbed1 or to depend upon mercy being extended as at the eleventh hour1 for it may not then be found4 ,let us then be concerned to work whilst it is called to-day1 and be ready to meet the awful summons1--,steward give up thy stewardship1 for thou mayest be no longer steward4 ,,susannah ,,nickalls1 ,ashford1 ,folkstone4 ,wife of ,thomas ,nickalls4 #fe #fmo4 #a #ahej ,,mary ,,nicholson1 the ,second month1 #ahdi1 aged #hg years3 for many years before her decease1 she filled very acceptably the station of ,elder1 and therein approved herself a lowly follower of her ,lord and ,master4 ,very precious to her surviving friends1 is the remembrance of her innocent1 circumspect walk1 holding out as it does in an impressive manner1 the invitation1 ,follow me as ,i have followed ,christ4 ,during the latter years of her lengthened life1 the fruits of her faith became increasingly prominent1 and she was endeared to her friends and neighbours around her in no common degree4 ,but it was during the last two months of her life1 when under great bodily suffering1 that her tongue was more fully set at liberty to declare the lovingkindness of the ,lord1 who in this season of trial was graciously pleased to lift up the light of his countenance upon her1 and to grant a full evidence of acceptance with himself1 enabling her to rejoice in the assurance that when her earthly house of this tabernacle should be dissolved1 there would be granted to her a building of ,god1 a house not made with hands1 eternal in the heavens4 ,her patient1 cheerful endurance of bodily pain was striking and instructive2 and in some seasons of closest conflict1 her faith was strong1 and her acknowledgment of the supporting power of ,god1 full and fervent4 ,she often said1 the ,lord was able to save and to deliver to the uttermost1 and would deliver her1 when patience had had its perfect work4 ,very impressive were her short petitions to the ,father of mercies1 for his support and deliverance1 accompanied as they constantly were with the addition1 if consistent with thy will4 ,she remarked1 ,i am in the hands of an unerring ,creator1 ,he cannot err4 ,we must not look to ourselves1 but to our ,saviour1 who loved us and gave himself for us--even for me1 the most unworthy of his creatures4 ,he healeth all my diseases1 and ,i have many1 but my mercies outweigh them all4 ,love and interest for her friends seemed often to dwell in her heart beyond the power of expression4 ,speaking of those who were members of the meeting to which she belonged1 she sent messages to each1 and made appropriate remarks respecting them individually1 dwelling with especial comfort on the remembrance of those among them who were bearing the burden of the day1 and labouring to promote their great ,master's cause4 ,she afterwards said1 whilst tears of tenderness flowed1 ,oh6 how many comfortable meetings ,i have had in that little meeting-house1 how have ,i loved to go and sit there6 ,it was not a little illness that kept me away3 and how has it rejoiced my heart to see individuals come in1 who have been as the anointed and sent6 ,on being told one morning that ,friends were going to meeting1 she said1 ,may they know the ,sun of righteousness to arise as with healing in his wings2 emphatically adding1 ,i think they will4 ,at another time she sent messages of love to many of the members of her ,monthly ,meeting1 adding with an expression of feeling1 to which those around could not be insensible4 ,but ,i cannot name all2 my love is universal2 ,god is love4 ,one night1 when in great pain1 she acknowledged in grateful terms1 the kindness of her attendants1 and her belief that a blessing with a full recompense would be given them2 and addressing one of them1 she continued1 ,i love thee tenderly1 and feel thee near in the best life--in the truth that is blessed for ever4 ,afterwards1 she broke forth with an audible voice thus3 ,bless the ,lord1 oh my soul6 and praise him for all his benefits4 ,what can ,i do6 how shall ,i praise him enough6 ,and then1 as with melody of soul1 she added1-- ,heavenly blessings without number1 ,gently falling on my head4 ,after taking an affectionate farewell of those around her1 and addressing them in an instructive and encouraging manner1 she added1 ,i can heartily say1 that death is robbed of its sting1 and the grave of its victory4 ,thanks be unto ,god who giveth the victory through our ,lord ,jesus ,christ4 ,and again1 ,praise and magnify the ,lord6 ,oh if ,i could sing1 ,i would sing his praise6 ,to some beloved relatives1 from a distance1 who came to see her1 she testified of her faith1 hope1 and confidence1--acknowledged1 that although frail in body1 she was strong in the ,lord1 and in the power of his might2 and expressed her desire1 that they might all meet where partings are not known1 adding1 goodness and mercy have followed me all the days of my life2 and there is a promise for the poor in spirit that will be fulfilled1 ',when the poor and needy seek water and there is none1 and their tongue faileth for thirst1 ,i the ,lord will hear them1 ,i the ,god of ,israel will not forsake them4' educated among ,friends4 ,he was not by birth a member of our ,society1 but was received into membership a short time previous to his death4 ,having been adopted by his uncle1 he was taken to ,ireland1 when about fourteen years of age1 as an apprentice to one of the ,provincial ,schools1 of which his uncle was the superintendent4 ,endowed with natural abilities well adapted for the acquisition of knowledge1 and possessing a taste for various branches of literature and science1--gifted1 too1 with engaging manners and affability of disposition1 he became1 as he grew up1 a general favourite amongst those with whom he associated1 and his immediate relatives indulged in fond hopes of his becoming an honourable and useful charter4 ,his best friends1 however1 were sometimes anxious on his account1 lest the caresses of the world should turn aside his feet from the path of safety1 and prevent that entire surrender of heart and life to the requirements of the gospel1 which alone consists with true ,christian discipleship1 and affords a well-grounded expectation of real usefulness and permanent well- being4 ,but he was open to receive the admonitions of his friends1 and there is reason to believe that the voice of ,christian counsel was instrumental to his good4 ,he was never very robust2 and his application to study1 in addition to his stated duties1 was1 perhaps1 not favourable to bodily vigour4 ,before the expiration of his apprenticeship1 he became so enfeebled1 as to cause his relations much anxiety2 and as his uncle and aunt had withdrawn from the ,institution1 the ,committee of the ,school kindly acceded to their proposal to remove him to their own house4 ,here he soon rallied2 and in the summer1 of #ahdh1 applied for the situation of teacher of ,sidcot ,school4 ,he entered upon the duties of the station with earnestness and zeal2 and the notice and encouragement which he there received1 tended both to render his occupation a delight1 and to draw forth the more hidden depths of his character4 ,his heart was in his work1 and the field of labour particularly congenial to his taste4 ,a few months1 however1 sufficed to bring on a return of delicacy1 and rendered it advisable that he should retire for a while from active duty2 but the following year1 apparently with renovated powers1 he again resumed his post4 ,for a while1 he appeared to think that his health was becoming confirmed2 but about the commencement of another year1 he was rapidly brought low1 and nearly disqualified for the performance of his school duties4 ,he was however retained in his office1 with delicate attention to his known wishes1 until in the #dth month1 #ahej1 he was obliged to withdraw1 and again make his uncle's house at ,mountmelick his home4 ,the ,robert ,waller1 she was called from the scene of her arduous1 yet to her1 pleasant labours2 the beneficial results of which were1 the establishment of orderly arrangement1 and plans of domestic comfort1 essential to the well-being of a school4 ,she remained with her brother at ,holdgate1 till the time of his second marriage1 when change was again her allotment4 ,after a short absence from ,york she finally settled there4 ,her declining health rendered repose needful1 although the liveliness of her spirits enabled her greatly to enjoy frequent intercourse with her friends2--and the school1 the scene of her former labours1 was an object of continued affectionate interest4 ,in recording these few incidents1 which we well know1 of themselves1 are of little importance1 perhaps entirely insignificant to the general reader1 we believe1 nevertheless1 that a useful lesson may be conveyed4 ,the path of our dear friend was1 remarkably1 not one of her own choosing2 most of the changes of place and circumstance which she experienced1 involved much that was painful2 yet under all1 the quiet1 peaceful1 thankful resignation which she was enabled to attain1 shewed where her hopes were anchored1 and proved the power of divine grace to make hard things easy4 ,for many months previous to her decease1 she was confined to her couch1 and latterly to her bed4 ,during this period1 she bore with unrepining patience1 much bodily suffering2 but her cheerful and energetic mind still retained its characteristic vigour4 ,in this1 her last illness1 the kind attentions1 and tender cares1 which she had so often ministered to others1 were abundantly repaid to herself4 ,in addition to the assiduous and faithful services of the family with whom she had taken up her abode1 and who became warmly attached to her1 she had for many weeks previous to her decease1 the tenderest attention of one of her affectionate nieces1 of whose infant years she had been the watchful guardian4 ,a friend who frequently visited her on her bed of suffering1 says1 ,in some of my last visits to her1 her expression of firm and loving reliance upon the ,lord1 whose support she had been wont to seek in the time of health1 as well as in that of suffering1 was a sweet testimony to the blessedness of having made him her portion4 ,she told me how comforted she had been under great bodily weakness1 when she felt unable definitely to put up her petitions1 in the lively remembrance that she had a never- failing ,advocate with the ,father1 touched with a feeling of her infirmities1 ever living to make intercession for her4 ',oh6' she remarked1 'the sense of it has been precious to me4' ,thus peace and thankfulness were the frequent clothing of her spirit1 till her earthly house of this tabernacle was quietly dissolved1 and exchanged1 we reverently believe1 for 'a house not made with hands1 eternal in the heavens4' ,,alice ,,waller1 ,the ,howe1 ,halsted4 ,widow of ,robert ,waller1 of ,york4 #gf #fmo4 #be #ahej ,of the childhood of our friend we know but little4 ,her parents were members of our religious ,society1 and brought up their children in conformity with its practices4 ,she was1 at rather an early age1 placed at the school for girls at ,york1 which had1 at that time1 some peculiar advantages in regard to the religious and moral care of the pupils4 ,but from this enclosure she was soon recalled1 to be the companion of her invalid mother2 and at the early age of sixteen1 when her beloved parent was removed by death1 she took the charge of her father's domestic concerns1 and resided with him till her marriage with ,benjamin ,horner of ,york4 ,although the shortness of the period she remained at school1 might be disadvantageous to her in several respects1 yet it is highly probable that1 in her mother's sick chamber1 some impressions were made1 and lessons learned1 which were as seeds sown to bring forth fruit in a future day4 ,her husband's circle of acquaintance was an extensive1 and1 in its character1 a much varied one2 and1 for some years1 ,alice ,horner mingled much in gay society1 occasionally frequenting with her husband places of amusement1 especially those in which music formed the chief attraction4 ,but during this period1 in which she may be said to have lived to herself1 she was not without compunctuous visitations2 and as the responsibilities of a mother came upon her1 she increasingly felt the seriousness of life1 and the duty1 as well as the privilege1 of living to ,god1 and being enabled to look unto ,him as a ,father and a ,friend4 ,these feelings appear to have gradually gained ascendancy in her mind1 and her prevalent desire became1 to be a ,christian upon ,christ's own terms4 ,she felt herself as one who had been forgiven much1 and therefore loved much1--striving to be no more conformed to this world1 but transformed by the renewing of her mind4 ,her conscience became not only enlightened1 but tender2 and yielding to what she believed to be her duty to ,god1 she not only refrained from all the public amusements in which she had formerly taken pleasure1 but acted in her associations with others1 consistently with her views as a ,friend4 ,if in this strait path2 walking much alone and inexperienced in the way3 she sometimes erred1 we believe it was rather on the side of decision1 than on that of undue yielding4 ,she seemed to live under a sense of that saying of the apostle1 ,whatsoever is not of faith is sin4 ,and whilst the course which she pursued could not fail to restrict1 in some degree1 her intercourse with the world1 those with whom she still associated1 7and her circle continued to be a wide one17 appeared in general to estimate her motives2 and many of them entertained an increased love and respect for her character2 and ,he who1 above all things1 she desired to serve1 was pleased abundantly to comfort and strengthen her in all her trials4 ,the death of her only daughter1 at the age of nineteen1 as well as that of her husband after a short illness1 a few years subsequently1 were close trials to her2 but she bowed in humble submission to these dispensations1 and1 under the chastening hand of the ,lord1 it became increasingly evident1 that the one thing needful was steadily kept in her view4 ,she was diligent in her attendance of our religious meetings1 and often remarked1 that she had been permitted to find in them a resting place to her soul4 ,after her second marriage1 with ,robert ,waller of ,holdgate near ,york1 her health1 which for a long time had not been strong1 began more rapidly to decline1 and at the death of her husband1 after a long and protracted illness1 she was so complete an invalid1 as to be chiefly confined to her bed for many months together4 ,this was a great trial upon her faith and patience2 but her hope and trust in her ,saviour's love never forsook her1 and often through her long illness1 she was enabled to look forward with hope and joy to that time1 when absent from the body1 she should be present with the ,lord4 ,six months after her husband's death1 she was removed1 in an invalid carriage1 to the residence of her eldest son in ,essex1 whose house continued to be her home the remainder of her days4 ,in writing to a much beloved friend1 from this quiet retreat soon after her arrival1 she remarks1--,every comfort and every indulgence is allotted to me by my attentive children4 ,oh what boundless demands upon my gratitude are thus poured forth4 ,i would gladly hope not without a heartfelt acknowledgment to that ,almighty ,giver1 who is the author of all our manifold mercies4 ,for all things ,i reverently thank my ,god and ,saviour1 remembering you my dear friends1 whom ,i have left1 with the truest affection4 ,to the same friend1 who herself was suffering from illness1 she again writes1 ,oh1 dearest ---1 how many of ,his dear children does the ,lord keep long in the furnace1 yet if he do but grant his presence there1 and watch over the refining process he designs to be accomplished1 there ought to be no complaining either of the length of time1 or the severity of the operation1 but through all1 the full fruits of resignation should be brought forth in perfection1 to his praise1 and his glory4 ,that so it may be1 my dear friend1 forms a wish on my own account as well as on thine1 day by day4 ,the time has appeared long to me1 that ,i have been required to lay under the rod1 but when we measure time as did the ,apostle of old1 and think of it as a vapour that quickly passeth away1 or as a shadow that abideth not1 we see that it is but for a little moment that our chastening can endure4 ,i cannot forbear beholding my day as far spent2 but ,i do rejoice to see heaven as a place of rest for me1--yes1 even for me6 through the blood shed for my sins on ,calvary's ,mount4 ,this mercy in ,christ ,jesus1 how precious it is to dwell upon4 ,alice ,waller loved the company of all those that loved the ,lord ,jesus1 and especially the messengers of the gospel were acceptable to her4 ,on one occasion when receiving a visit from a friend1 whilst laid upon her bed of suffering1 she1 in great contrition1 expressed her sense of her heavenly ,father's love and mercy to her1 a poor creature1 adding1 ,i feel bound to tell of ,his marvellous goodness to me1 even to me1 by night and by day upon my bed1 in seasons of trial ,i have been comforted by my ,saviour's presence4 ,in the beginning of the ,sixth ,month1 #ahej1 she became more poorly1 and both herself and her children were impressed with the belief that her end was drawing near2 on the #aeth she passed a very trying day1 but in the evening revived a little and spoke most sweetly of the fulness and clearness of her hope1 and her perfect confidence in the love and mercy of her ,god1 extended to her for the sake of her beloved ,saviour2 she was full of sweetness and affection to all around her1 her heart overflowing with gratitude to ,god and man4 ,dear ,hannah ,c4 ,backhouse1 she remarked1 visited me a short time before ,i came here1 and she said1 ',i believe ,jesus has thrown his arm of everlasting love around thee1 and is drawing thee nearer and nearer to himself1 and he will draw thee nearer and nearer1 till at last ,he will press thee into his bosom4' ,it was a sweet message2 ,i have often thought upon it since1 and ,i now feel such close union of spirit with ,god1 that ,i cannot doubt it is even so4 ,on the passage of ,scripture being repeated1 ,the angel of the ,lord encampeth round about them that fear him1 she added1 yes1 and preserveth them4--',this poor man cried1 and the ,lord heard him and delivered him from all his troubles4' ,the fear of the ,lord has been my support for many years past4 ,and on being reminded of that verse of ,scripture1 ,thy rod and thy staff they comfort me1 she said1 ,he has been my staff and my rod in the dark valley of death1 keeping my head above the waters1 and he has given me hope full of immortality1--full of immortality6 and ,i shall dwell in the house of the ,lord for ever2 ,i humbly trust that such will be my portion4 ,she then remarked ,it is just a week to-day since ,i began to be so very ill2--strange conflict of the body1 with the mind so perfectly tranquil1 in strong confirmation of the blessed promise1 ',thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee4'--,i have often thought ,i heard the song of ,moses and of the ,lamb1 as ,i lay here in deep exhaustion4 ,at another time she remarked1 ,i have often sinned1 and erred much1 but ,i have ,one in heaven that pleadeth for me4 ,she hailed with much joy the arrival of a beloved friend1 and spoke of the event as filling up the only remaining desire she had on earth2 their meeting was a season of mutual love and thanksgiving to the ,lord4 ,on ,second day1 the #bdth1 she said1 ,i am so loosed from every thing below1 as ,i could not have believed2 and in the evening expressed that she was so filled with thankfulness her heart was overflowing6 ,she intimated her belief1 when her room was made ready for the night1 that it would be the last she should have to pass1 and the next morning it became evident that she was rapidly sinking4 ,it was said to her that it was a long and trying travel1 but she was near to a better land6 when she quickly responded1 ,yes1 ,emanuel's land3 and on its being remarked1 ,the crown is nearly won2 she emphatically replied1 ,oh1 ,i wish it were on6 ,a short time after calling1 distributing many times at the rate of a thousand pounds a year4 ,as a steward of the gifts of ,god1 he carefully invested his money so as to secure a fair rate of interest1 and on no occasion did he relax from the utmost exactness in his monetary dealings2 and yet it is believed that his personal and domestic expenditure never reached #aej pounds per annum4 ,his house1 like his person1 was a pattern of plainness and simplicity4 ,his furniture consisted of nothing fashionable or superfluous2 and his table was equally marked by comfort and frugality4 ,he was a warm advocate in the cause of ,temperance1 and was deeply interested in the subject of the prevention of ,cruelty to ,animals4 ,of ,tracts1 he must have paid for1 and circulated gratuitously1 some millions6 ,his whole time and energies were fully employed1 and often heavily taxed1 in devising and carrying out schemes of mercy and benevolence1 and his life presented one uniform tenor of consistent piety4 ,to strangers he might appear reserved1 but his apparent reserve only resulted from his constitutional modesty1 and retiring habits1 whilst to those who enjoyed his friendship1 he was frank1 open1 and intelligent in no ordinary degree4 ,william ,wilson was never robust1 but toward the close of his life1 his feebleness became more apparent2 for more than a week he was confined to his bed1 but without any urgent symptom of disease4 ,his mind was calm and peaceful1--he knew and loved his ,saviour1 and through ,his mediation1 we cannot doubt he has inherited the blessing to the pure in heart1 record4 ,she disliked study1 and was fond of boyish sports1 until about the age of thirteen1 when she began to feel enjoyment in reading4 ,possessed of a naturally powerful and energetic mind1 with talents of a very superior order1 she soon began to take great delight in study1 and was ambitious to excel in every thing that she undertook4 ,drawing she pursued with intense eagerness1 and in this and other acquirements1 she made great proficiency4 ,until about the age of seventeen1 her highest enjoyment was derived from the cultivation of the intellectual powers1 and in the endeavour to raise these to their highest perfection1 she imagined the greatest happiness to consist4 ,in her journal she writes3--,my thoughts have been this week1 one continued castle in the air of being an artist2 the only reality they were built on1 was my having painted in oils better than ,i thought ,i could1 and a feeling that ,i shall in a little time succeed1 and an unbounded ambition to do so4 ,i have had many arguments with myself1 to know if it would be right4 ,i think it would1 if ,i could make good use of it4 ,but gradually she found that no object which had this world for its limit1 could satisfy the cravings of an immortal soul4 ,she began to feel that she was formed for higher purposes than the gratification of self in its most refined and plausible form1 and in #ahjf1 we note the gradual unfolding of that change of view1 which through the operation of the ,holy ,spirit1 led her to the unreserved surrender of her whole being to the service of her ,lord2--a surrender that in so remarkable a manner marked her unwavering path through the remaining portion of her dedicated life4 ,speaking of this period1 after her first attendance of the ,yearly ,meeting1 she says1-- ,july1 #ahjf4 ,this time1 for almost the first in my life1 ,i seem come to a stand in the objects of my darling pursuits1 which ,i may say have been almost entirely the pursuit of pleasure1 through the how great is ,thy goodness which ,thou hast laid up for them that fear ,thee1 which ,thou hast wrought for them that trust in ,thee before the sons of men4' ,in looking back to the last two or three months1 ,i feel ,i may adopt this language3 in them ,i have known the greatest portion of suffering that it has yet been my lot to taste4 #crd ,month1 #ahbb4 ,she writes1 ,in the afternoon meeting1 a subject seemed so clear before me1 that ,i ventured to speak2 but oh6 the evil of my heart1 the consciousness of having1 or supposing ,i had1 chosen my words well1 was like the fly in the ointment of the apothecary1 the baneful effects of which1 ,i felt many days after4 ,the more ,i see of my own mind1 the more may the breathing of my soul be1--',if ,thou wilt1 ,thou canst make me clean4' ,sometimes to believe that it is ,his will1 is sweet to me1 but we must maintain the fight1 for though the victory is ,his1 the fall is ours4 ,the constant and deep consideration for others in the most minute actions of life1 how ,i love it1 and feel myself 'as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke4' #eth ,month1 #fth1 #ahbb4 ,days and nights of much spiritual conflict1 or rather perhaps the sight that there was much to conflict with2 weak in body and weak in mind6 ,in my ministry more patient and deep deliberation wanting4 ,last night1 believed ,i had not kept close enough to my ,guide in prayer1 with which ,i felt some distress1--perhaps not altogether wrong1--but had not stopped when ,i ought1 nor waited at every moment for clearness and strength in the exercise2 ,i hope ,i shall not hurt others4 #fth ,month1 #ahbb4 ,a month is now passed in which ,i have been sweetly enabled to enjoy the love of ,god in my heart4 ,i trust we shall experience preservation1 though we may well fear for ourselves1 and be the subject of fear for others4 ,oh6 that1 without affectation1 we may live deeply in the root of life6 #dth ,month1 #ahbc4 ,i have much to bind me to this earth1 but perhaps more power of gratefully enjoying its blessings is wanted1 and may be in store for me before ,i leave it2 some minds seem deeply anchored in the truth1 meekly and patiently bearing the trials of the day1 with firmer faith and greater purity1 but each heart alone knows its own bitterness1 and ,i believe there is never much attainment without much suffering2--a chastened habit of thought1 how desirable to be the habit of early life6 riches and indulgences how inimical to it6 #dth ,month1 #ahbe4 ,my mind enjoyed a liberty1 and something of the light of the glorious gospel1 a state which ,i often pant after1 and am so generally a stranger to2 in each day a religious engagement seemed peculiarly blessed to myself4 ,a sense of being liked and loved1 is gratifying2 at the same time ,i acknowledge1 it has its dangers2 it is1 however1 a stimulus to do good and to communicate4 #dth ,month1 #beth4 ,a poor body1 and a weak restless mind6 ,how the sword does wear the scabbard6 but this world is not to be our paradise2 perhaps ,i lose some little strength in striving to make it so4 ,oh6 my ,god1 have pity upon me2 thou alone canst know how much ,i suffer2--if my children ail anything1 what it costs me4 ,in #ahbf1 she visited the families of ,friends in ,darlington ,monthly ,meeting1 in company with ,isaac ,stephenson2 and in allusion to this engagement1 she writes3 ,entered last week on a visit1 with ,i4 ,stephenson1 to the families of this ,monthly ,meeting4 ,ministry is surely a gift6 may the vessel be purified by using it in faith4 #crd ,month1 #ahbf4 ,after many cogitations and some provings of faith1 ,i went with ,isaac ,stephenson to ,manchester1 ,lancaster1 and ,leeds3 ,i felt it like leaving all to follow what ,i believed to be my divine ,guide2 it cost me some heart-sinkings and tears1 but my mind was sweetly preserved in peace and confidence2 and1 though ,i had times of depression and fear to pass through1 ,i have been thankful that ,i made the sacrifice4 ,it has endeared me to many individuals2 and at times1 in the undoubted belief that it was a divine requiring1 it has strengthened my faith1 and excited some degree of thankfulness for being so employed4 #dth ,month1 #afth4 ,a sweet day of rest and peace1 such as ,i do not remember to have known for years4 #dth ,month1 #ahth4 ,monthly ,meeting one of perplexity and fear1 ,oh6 for dwelling deep and lying low6 and waiting in quietness for the 'little cloud6' but it seems as if my faith were to be tried by things coming unexpectedly upon me1 and to be humbled by feeling ill prepared4 ,from this time she went on advancing rapidly in the work of the ministry3 her truly catholic spirit expanded in love to her fellow-creatures2 the inmates of the palace as well as those of the prison1 shared alike her ,christian zeal and interest4 ,her naturally powerful and refined mind1 deeply instructed in the things of ,god1 rendered her peculiarly fitted to labour amongst those1 who being invested with wealth and influence1 she regarded as stewards1 deeply responsible for the right occupation of their various gifts3 with many of these1 in the upper classes of society1 she sought and obtained opportunities for conveying religious counsel2 and in not a few instances there was a deep response in the hearts of her hearers1 to the truths which she had to proclaim4 ,the public meetings which she held were very numerous1--many of them very remarkable4 ,her fervour in seeking to arouse to a sense of their condition1 those who were dead in trespasses and sins1--her sound and convincing arguments1 in controverting the views of the infidel1--her zeal against the lukewarm professor1 and her earnest affectionate invitations to the humble believer in ,jesus1 to lay aside every weight1 and partake1 in all their fulness1 of the blessings purchased for them by the dear ,son of ,god2 will long be remembered by those who felt the truth and unction of her appeals4 ,she dwelt upon the glorious scheme of redemption1 through the propitiatory sacrifice of ,christ ,jesus upon the cross1 for the sins of the whole world2 and of the absolute necessity of sanctification of spirit1 through the effectual operation of divine grace on the heart1 as one1 who had herself largely participated1 in the blessings and mercies of her ,god4 ,she was1 however1 no stranger to deep mental conflicts1 both in the prosecution of her religious labours1 and in the more retired sphere of domestic life1 as some of her memoranda show4 ,in #ahbg1 after visiting with her husband1 the counties of ,devon and ,cornwall1 an engagement which occupied them nearly two months1 and included a visit to the ,scilly ,isles1 she writes3-- #gth ,month1 #ahbg4 ,i felt it a day of favour when we gave in our account at the ,monthly ,meeting1 the third day after our arrival at home1 but in returning from this journey1 ,i have been made remarkably sensible1 that the business of religion is the business of the day1 and that the exercises and strength of any past day1 are but as nothing for the day that is passing over us2 and many of these days have been passed in much mental conflict1 and much bodily weakness and languor4 #ahbh4 ,many1 and many have been my fears1 lest the good things that others may see us surrounded with1 should be as a stumbling block leading to covetousness2 how hardly shall they that have riches lead the life of a humble follower of the dear ,redeemer6 ,these thoughts often beset me1 and sometimes make me fear1 if ever ,i have a right to open my mouth to advocate ,his cause4 ,i could wish ,i had a heart1 a head1 and a mind fit for all ,i could embrace1 but that may never be3 however1 altogether my mind has been of late1 less covered with clouds than it used to be1 and my health revives with it4 ',what shall ,i render for all thy benefits8' may well be the language of my soul4 ,in #ahbi she was again joined by her dear husband in a visit to ,ireland2 after which she writes3-- #ajth ,month1 #ahbi4 ,we passed through many deep baptisms1 many sinks both of body and mind1 and in the course of three or four months1 attended all the particular meetings2 ,i think we did too much in the time to do it as well as we might2 there was much exercise of faith1 but patience had not its perfect work3--may my daily prayer be for patience1 and the daily close exercise of my spirit to obtain it2 for want of it1 ,i get into many perplexities1 that might be avoided2 yet with all the omissions and commissions that ,i can look back upon with shame1 ,i can number this journey among the many mercies of my life1 being at times in it1 introduced into a more soul-satisfying state than ,i had perhaps ever known before1 and ,i was never more fully persuaded that we were commissioned to preach the gospel4 ,the company of my dear husband was truly a comfort and support1 as well as very endearing1 and this journey has enlarged my heart in love to hundreds1 and has written many epistles there1 which ,i trust may never be blotted out4 ,in #ahcj1 she laid before her ,monthly ,meeting1 a prospect of going to ,america4 ,this concern was cordially united with1 and she and her husband were liberated for the service in that land4 ,in reference to this very weighty engagement1 she thus writes to her dear cousin1 ,elizabeth ,fry3-- ,darlington1 #bnd ,month1 #dth1 #ahcj4 ,my dearest ,betsy1 ,i believe some of thy tenderest sympathies will be aroused1 on hearing of the momentous prospect now before us of visiting ,north ,america4 ,i dare say many1 many years ago1 thy imagination sent me there1--call it by that name1 or the more orthodox one of faith1--so has mine1 but ,i saw it without baptism2 now1 ,i pass into it under baptism1 which in depth far exceeds any thing ,i have known before2 the severing work it is to the ties of nature1 to my dear ,father1 ,mother1 and ,children1 breaks me all to pieces1 but ,i have much1 if not entirely1 been spared from doubts2 all ,i seem to have had to do was to submit2 this is a great comfort1 for which ,i desire to be thankful1 and for that peace which in the midst of deep suffering has so far rested upon it4 ,thy very affectionate ,h4 ,c4 ,,backhouse4 ,her labours in ,america were very abundant1 and there is reason to believe1 blessed to very many4 ,during the five years she spent on that ,continent1 she visited the greater part of the meetings of ,friends1 and in doing so1 shrank from no hardship or privation consequent upon travelling in districts recently settled4 ,in #ahcc1 ,jonathan ,backhouse thus writes of her labours-- ,i do think my wife's labours in these parts1 have been of essential service2--helped some sunken ones out of a pit1 strengthened some weak hands1 and confirmed some wavering ones1 as well as comforted the mourners4 ,she has no cause to be discouraged about her labours1 they have been blessed4 ,her husband thinking it desirable to return for a while to ,england1 ,hannah ,c4 ,backhouse was provided with a most faithful valuable companion in ,eliza ,p4 ,kirkbride1 and for her as well as for many other beloved friends to whom she had become closely united in ,america1 she retained a warm interest and affection to the close of her life4 ,in #ahce1 they returned to ,england1 and in the bosom of her beloved family and friends1 great was1 for a time1 her domestic happiness4 ,but home endearments were not permitted to interfere with her devotion to ,him1 to do whose will1 was not only her highest aim1 but her chief delight3 and whenever the ,lord's call was heard1 she was ready to obey4 ,many parts of ,england1 and ,scotland were visited between this time and #ahde4 ,during this interval some of her nearest domestic ties were broken2 her eldest surviving son1 an engaging youth of seventeen1 her beloved husband1 and a precious daughter1 the wife of ,john ,hodgkin1 of ,tottenham1 were all summoned to their eternal home3 whilst under the pressure of sorrow occasioned by the removal of ,ann ,hodgkin1 the following letter was penned3-- ,tottenham1 #abth ,month1 #ith1 #ahde4 ,my losses have been many and great1 but the greatness of this1 ,i am increasingly coming into the apprehension of4 ,she was lovely in her life1 and in death may we not be divided6 or by death1 but may her sweet spirit be very near in my remembrance1 to the end of my days1 and then may ,i join ,father and ,mother1 ,brothers and ,sisters1 ,husband and ,children1--how many of the nearest ties now1 we trust1 in heaven1 and how few on earth comparatively4 ,on this subject ,i cannot now dwell1--when ,i can view her free from all weakness1 corruption1 and suffering1 in the enjoyment of that rest1 she knew so well how to appreciate1 ,i could smile with a joyful sorrow2 but few of such moments have been given2 in general a patient bearing of the present moment1 is the most we have arrived at1 under the blessed unmoved confidence that all is well4 ,your very affectionate sister1 ,h4 ,c4 ,,backhouse4 ,from this time a cessation from labour was granted1 and after having thus devoted the meridian of her life to the service of her ,lord1 she was permitted for some years previous to her decease1 to enjoy a season of almost uninterrupted repose4 ,love1 meekness1 gentleness1 and peace were eminently the clothing of her spirit2 and like ,moses viewing from the ,mount the ,promised ,land1 she seemed almost to live above the trials and temptations of time2 nothing appeared materially to disturb or ruffle the repose of her soul1 deeply centred in ,god4 ,her ministry was often strikingly beautiful and impressive1 especially exhorting to unreserved dedication1 and dwelling on the glories of the heavenly kingdom4 ,during the latter part of #ahdi1 her health1 which had long been delicate1 began increasingly to give way2 at the end of the #crd ,month of #ahej1 she was seized with alarming illness1 from which little hope was entertained of her recovery2 from this she so far rallied as to leave her bed-room1 and go into an adjoining sitting-room1 but never was able to go down stairs4 ,it was evident her strength was very small1 but no immediate danger was at this time apprehended4 ,she was at times1 cheerful1 always tranquil and full of repose1 and able to enjoy the company of those immediately around her2 at other times illness oppressed her1 and prevented the power for much exertion of mind or communication of thought4 ,but words were not needed to declare her faith or her love1 when through having faithfully occupied with the grace that had been given to her1 her whole life might almost be said to have been one act of dedication to ,god4 ,on the night of the #eth of ,fifth ,month1 increased illness came on1 she continued conscious almost to the last1 and alluded with perfect calmness to the fresh symptoms of danger4 ,on her sister remarking to her1 that though it was a dark valley1 it would soon be all joy to her1 she responded by a beautiful smile1 but power of articulation soon failed1 and on the morning of the #fth of ,fifth ,month1 #ahej1 she most gently expired4 ,we cannot close this account more appropriately than in the language of a dear friend who had long known and loved her4 ,a character of such rare excellence1 such singleness of purpose1 such true devotedness1 in which the intellectual and the spiritual were so well balanced1 and well developed together3--a character in which1 with all the occasional undulations and agitations of the surface1 there was such a deep1 such a clear1 such a calm and steady under-current of sterling piety1 of unwavering attachment to the cause of our ,god and of his ,christ1 of close adherence to the leadings of his ,spirit1 and strong desire to do his will2--a character in which the woman1 the ,christian1 and the ,quaker were so fused into one1 did truly adorn the doctrine of ,god her ,saviour4 ,it was conspicuous that by the grace of ,god she was what she was2 though nature had done much1 grace had done much more1 and it was evident that she humbly felt that she was not her own1 that she was bought with a price2 that amidst all that surrounded her of the perishing things of time1 she did not live unto herself1 but unto ,him who died for her and rose again1 who was her ,alpha and ,omega1 her all in all4 ,in our little and afflicted church1 the loss is great3 she was one of our stakes1 and one of our cords6 ,the stake is removed1 the cord is broken1 but our ,god abideth for ever4 ,a ,,sketch ,,of ,,the ,,life ,,and ,,labours ,,of ,,patrick1 ,the ,apostle of the ,irish4 ,we think it will be agreeable to our readers1 that we should occupy a few vacant pages1 by the following lively particulars respecting ,patrick1 the ,apostle of the ,irish4 ,they are extracted from a work lately published1 under the title of1 ,light in ,dark ,places2 or ,memorials of ,christian ,life in the ,middle ,ages1 which is stated1 in the preface1 to be translated from a ,german work by the late ,augustus ,neander4 ,patrick flourished in the early part of the fifth century1 before the ,romish yoke was imposed upon the ,british churches1 but not before much superstition had become mixed with the purity of the ,christian faith4 ,his early circumstances seem1 however1 to have entirely detached him from dependence upon man1 and to have driven him to the ,one great ,source of light and strength4 ,romanists have a story of his having gone to ,rome1 and having received there his authority as the first bishop of ,ireland2 but it is evident that his call to preach the gospel to the ,irish1 was not of man1 or from man1 but immediately from ,god1 who inspired him with holy faith and courage1 and in a most remarkable manner prospered his labours4 99 99 99 99 99 ,this remarkable man was prepared1 by very peculiar circumstances1 for his important work2 and in his instance1 also1 it may be seen1 how that infinite wisdom which guides the development of the kingdom of ,god amongst men1 is able to bring great things out of what seems insignificant to the eyes of men4 ,patrick1 called in his native tongue ,succath1 was born ,a4,d4 #cgb1 between the ,scottish towns of ,dumbarton and ,glasgow1 7then appended to ,england17 in the village of ,bonaven1 since named in honour of him1 ,kilpatrick4 ,he was the son of a poor unlettered deacon of the village church4 ,no particular care was bestowed on his education1 and he lived on light-heartedly1 from day to day1 without making the religious truths taught him by his parents matters of personal interest1 until his seventeenth year4 ,then1 it happened that he was awakened by a severe chastisement from his ,heavenly ,father from this sleep of death to a higher life4 ,some pirates of the wild tribe of the ,scots1 who then inhabited ,ireland1 landed at the dwelling-place of ,patrick1 and carried him off with other captives4 ,he was sold into slavery to a ,scottish prince1 who committed to him the care of his flocks and herds4 ,necessity directed his heart to that ,god of whom1 in his days of rest in his father's house1 he had not thought4 ,abandoned of men1 he found consolation and blessedness in ,him1 and now first learned to perceive and enjoy the treasures which the ,christian has in heaven4 ,whilst he roamed about with his flocks1 through ice and snow1 communion with his ,god in prayer1 and quiet contemplation1 were his portion4 ,let us hear how he himself1 in a confession which he subsequently wrote1 describes this change which took place in him4 ,i was about sixteen years old1 and knew nothing of the true ,god1 when ,i was led into captivity with many thousands of my countrymen1 as we deserved1 in that we had departed from ,god1 and had not kept his commandments4 ,there ,god opened my unbelieving heart1 so that ,i1 although late1 remembered my sins1 and turned with my whole heart to the ,lord my ,god1 to ,him who had regarded my loneliness1 had had compassion on my youth and my ignorance1 and had watched over me before ,i knew him2 who1 ere ,i knew how to choose between good and evil1 had guarded and cherished me1 as a father doth his son4 ,this ,i know assuredly1 that before ,god humbled me1 ,i was like a stone lying sunk in deep mire2 but ,he who is able came1 ,he raised me in his mercy1 and set me on a very high place4 ,therefore must ,i loudly bear witness to this1 in order1 in some measure1 to repay the ,lord for such great blessings in time and eternity1 great beyond the apprehension of human reason4 ,when ,i came to ,ireland1 he says1 and used daily to keep the cattle1 and often every day to pray1 the fear and the love of ,god were ever more and more enkindled in me1 and my faith increased1 so that1 in one day1 ,i spoke a hundred times in prayer1 and in the night almost as often2 and even when ,i passed the night on the mountains1 or in the forest1 amid snow and ice and rain1 ,i would awake before daybreak to pray4 ,and ,i felt no discomfort1 there was then no sloth in me1 such as ,i find in my heart now1 for then the ,spirit glowed within me4 ,after he had passed six years in the service of this prince1 he thought he heard a voice in his sleep which promised him a speedy return to his native land1 and soon afterwards announced to him that a ship was already prepared to take him4 ,in reliance on this call1 he set out1 and after a journey of many days1 he found a ship about to set sail4 ,but the captain would not1 at first1 receive the poor unknown youth4 ,patrick fell on his knees and prayed4 ,he had not finished his prayer before one of the ship's company called him back1 and offered him a passage4 ,after a wearisome voyage1 in which he experienced1 from the grace which guided him1 many a deliverance from great peril1 and many a memorable answer to prayer1 he arrived once more amongst his people4 ,many years after this1 he was again carried off by pirates4 ,but1 in sixteen days1 by the special guidance of ,providence1 he regained his freedom1 and again returned1 after many fresh perils and fatigues1 to his people4 ,great was the joy of his parents to see their son again after so many perils1 and they entreated him thenceforth to remain with them always4 ,but ,patrick felt an irresistible call to carry to the people amongst whom he had passed the years of his youth1 and amongst whom he had been born again to the heavenly life1 the tidings of that salvation which had been imparted to him by ,divine grace1 whilst amongst them4 ,as the apostle ,paul was by the ,lord called1 in a nocturnal vision1 to carry to the people of ,macedonia the first tidings of salvation1 so there appeared to ,patrick one night1 in a vision1 a man from ,ireland with many letters4 ,he gave him one1 and ,patrick read the first words1 ,the words of the ,irish4 ,and as he read these words1 he thought he heard the simultaneous cry of many ,irish tribes dwelling by the sea1 ,we pray thee1 child of ,god1 come and dwell once more amongst us4 ,he could not read further1 from the agitation of his heart1 and awoke4 ,another night he thought he heard in a dream a heavenly voice1 whose last words only were intelligible to him1 namely1 these words1--,he who gave his life for thee1 speaks in thee4 ,and he awoke full of joy4 ,one night it seemed to him as if something that was in him1 and yet above him1 and was not himself1 prayed with deep sighings1 and at the end of the prayer it spoke1 as if it were the ,spirit of ,god himself4 ,and he awoke1 and remembered the expressive words of the apostle ,paul1 concerning the inward communion of the children of ,god with his ,spirit1 ,the ,spirit itself helpeth our infirmities4 ,for we know not what we should pray for as we ought1 but the ,spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings that cannot be uttered4 ,and in ,romans viii4 #bd ,christ which also maketh intercession for us4 ,as the ,almighty ,shepherd of souls does not draw all to himself by the same means1 nor guide and nourish them alike2 but1 on the contrary reveals and communicates himself to them in divers manners1 according to his various purposes for them1 and their various wants2 it pleased ,him to grant ,patrick1 by many manifestations of his grace1 the pledge of the certainty of his fellowship with ,himself1 and of his call to preach the ,gospel in ,ireland4 ,his parents and friends sought to hold him back1 representing to him that such an undertaking far exceeded his capacity4 ,he himself informs us of this1 when he says3 ,many dissuaded me from this journey1 and said behind my back1 ',why does this man throw himself into danger1 amongst the heathen who do not know the ,lord8' ,it was not said maliciously1 but they could not comprehend the thing on account of my rustic life and manners4 ,but nothing could mislead him1 for he trusted in the power of the ,lord1 who imparted to him the inward confidence that ,he had called him1 and was with him4 ,he himself says of this3 ,whence came to me so great and blessed a gift1 that ,i should know and love ,god1 and be able to forsake my country and my kindred1 although large gifts were offered me1 with many tears1 if ,i would remain8 ,and against my will ,i was compelled to offend many of my kindred and my well-wishers4 ,but by ,god's guidance1 ,i yielded not to them2 it was not my own power1 it was ,god who triumphed in me1 and resisted them all1 so that ,i went amongst the people of ,ireland to preach to them this ,gospel1 prepared to suffer much contempt from the unbelieving1 and many persecutions1 even to chains2 and1 if needful1 to sacrifice my freedom for the good of others4 ,and if ,i am counted worthy1 ,i am ready also to lay down my life with joy for ,his name's sake4 ,patrick1 accordingly1 went to ,ireland1 in the year #dca4 ,he could now make use of his early proficiency in the ,irish language4 ,he gathered great multitudes of the people together in the open air1 by beat of drum1 to tell them of the sufferings of the ,saviour for sinful men2 and the doctrine of the cross manifested its characteristic power over many hearts4 ,patrick met indeed with much opposition4 ,the priests and national bards1 who possessed great influence1 excited the people against him1 and he had to endure many a hot persecution4 ,but he overcame by his steadfastness in the faith1 by his fervent zeal1 and by a love which drew all hearts to itself4 ,patrick addressed himself especially to the chiefs and princes of the people4 ,they could do the most mischief1 if they were excited by the ,druids against the strange religion2 and1 on the other hand1 if they received the ,gospel1 they might make their people more accessible1 and form a counterbalance to the influence of the ,druids4 ,patrick took the part of servants who had suffered hard usage from their masters4 ,when he found youths of the lower ranks1 who seemed to him fitted for a higher calling1 he provided for their education1 and trained them to be teachers of the people4 ,he had1 from his youth1 as we have seen1 experienced the especial guidance of the ,lord1 and his heart was penetrated by it4 ,now1 whilst he laboured in the fervour and power of faith1 he was able to produce effects on the rude minds of the ,irish1 such as never could have been produced by ordinary human power4 ,he saw himself1 moreover1 sustained by the peculiar direction of that ,god whose word he preached4 ,patrick speaks of it1 not in spiritual pride1 but full of the sense of his unworthiness and impotence1 as well as of the consciousness of the grace working in and through him4 ,after speaking1 in one of his letters1 of such marvels as ,god granted him to perform amongst the barbarous people1 he added3 ,but ,i conjure all1 let no one1 on account of these or the like things1 think to place me on an equality with the ,apostles and other perfect men2 for ,i am an insignificant1 sinful1 and despicable man4 ,and more marvellous to him than the miracles which were wrought by him1 was the simple fact which filled his whole soul1 that by him who1 until ,god drew his soul to ,himself by severe chastisement1 had himself cared so little about his own salvation1 many thousands of the people1 who had hitherto known nothing of the true ,god1 should be brought to salvation4 ,marvel1 he says1 ye who fear ,god1 small and great1 and ye eloquent talkers1 who know nothing of the ,lord1 inquire and acknowledge who it is that has awakened me1 a simple man1 from the midst of those who are accounted wise1 learned1 and mighty1 in word and in deed4 ,for ,i1 who was abandoned beyond many others in the world2 even ,i1 in spite of all this1 have been called by his ,spirit1 that in fear and trembling1 yet faithfully and blamelessly1 ,i should serve the people to whom the love of ,christ has led me4 ,unweariedly must ,i thank my ,god1 who has kept me faithful in the day of temptation1 so that ,i can this day trustfully offer my soul as a living sacrifice of thanksgiving to my ,lord ,christ1 who has delivered me out of all my afflictions1 so that ,i must also say1 ,who am ,i1 ,lord8 and what is my calling8 that thou hast so gloriously revealed to me thy ,godhead1 that ,i can now constantly rejoice amongst the heathen1 and glorify ,thy name wherever ,i may be1 not only in prosperity1 but also in adversity2 so that whatever may befall me1 good or evil1 ,i can calmly receive it1 and continually thank that ,god who has taught me to believe in ,him as the only true ,god4 ,patrick endeavoured to avoid all appearance of seeking his own gain or glory4 ,a man who1 according to the judgment of men1 was not fitted to effect such great things1 who from obscurity and poverty had been called to so high a place1 and in whom therefore1 as is frequently the case1 those who had formerly known him after the flesh would not recognise what the ,spirit had accomplished1 such a man was obliged1 with all the more circumspection1 to avoid giving any occasion to those who were disposed to declare a thing which they could neither measure nor comprehend by the common standard1 altogether beyond flesh and blood4 ,when many1 full of love and gratitude to the teacher of salvation1 their spiritual father1 freely offered him gifts1 and pious women offered their ornaments1 ,patrick1 although the donors were at first offended at it1 in order to avoid all evil report1 declined everything4 ,he himself gave presents to the heathen chiefs1 in order thereby to purchase peace for himself and his churches2 he ransomed many ,christians from captivity2 and was himself prepared1 as a good shepherd1 to lay down all1 even to his life1 for his sheep4 ,in his confession of faith1 which1 after labouring for thirty years in this calling1 he addressed to his converts1 he says3 ,that ye may rejoice in me1 and ,i may ever rejoice in you in the ,lord1 ,i repent not what ,i have done1 and even now it is not enough for me1 ,i shall go further and sacrifice much more4 ,the ,lord is mighty to confirm me yet more1 that ,i may yield up my life for your souls4 ,i call ,god to witness in my soul1 that ,i have not written this to seek glory from you4 ,the glory which is not seen1 but believed on in the heart is enough for me4 ,faithful is that ,god who hath promised1 and he lieth not4 ,but already in this world ,i behold myself exalted above measure by the ,lord4 ,i know very well that poverty and hardship suit me better than wealth and ease2 yea1 even the ,lord ,christ became poor for our sakes4 ,daily have ,i expected to be seized1 carried into captivity1 or slain2 but ,i fear none of these things1 because of the promises of heaven2 for ,i have cast myself into the arms of the ,almighty ,god1 who reigns everywhere1 as it is said in the ,psalm1 ',cast thy burden upon the ,lord1 and he shall sustain thee4' ,now ,i commend my soul to my faithful ,god1 whom in my insignificance ,i serve as his messenger4 ,for since with ,him there is no respect of persons1 and since ,he has chosen me for this calling1 that ,i as one of the least of ,his people1 should serve ,him1 what shall ,i render unto the ,lord for all his benefits8 ,what shall ,i say or promise unto my ,lord8 ,for ,i can do nothing1 unless ,he himself give it me6 ,but ,he trieth the hearts and reins1 and ,he knoweth how greatly ,i long that ,he may give me to drink of the cup of ,his sufferings1 as ,he has granted to others who love ,him4 ,i pray ,god that ,he may give me perseverance1 and enable me to bear a faithful witness until my departure4 ,and if ,i have striven after anything good for my ,god's sake1 whom ,i love1 ,i beseech ,him that ,i1 with those my new converts who have fallen into captivity1 may shed my blood for his ,name's sake1 even though ,i should never be buried1 even though my body should be torn in pieces by wild beasts4 ,i believe firmly
