,may1 #ahhh ,the ,blessings of ,publicity #db ,from ,lucifer1 ,august1 #ahia ,occultism is not magic1 though magic is one of its tools4 ,occultism is not the acquirement of powers1 whether psychic or intellectual1 though both are its servants4 ,neither is occultism the pursuit of happiness1 as men understand the word2 for the first step is sacrifice1 the second1 renunciation4 ,occultism is the science of life1 the art of living4--,lucifer1 ,vol4 ,i1 p4 #g4 ,,practical ,,occultism ,,important ,,to ,,students ,as some of the letters in the ,correspondence of this month show1 there are many people who are looking for practical instruction in ,occultism4 ,it becomes necessary1 therefore1 to state once for all3-- 7a7 ,the essential difference between theoretical and practical ,occultism2 or what is generally known as ,theosophy on the one hand1 and ,occult science on the other1 and3-- 7b7 ,the nature of the difficulties involved in the study of the latter4 ,it is easy to become a ,theosophist4 ,any person of average intellectual capacities1 and a leaning toward the metaphysical2 of pure1 unselfish life1 who finds more joy in helping his neighbor than in receiving help himself2 one who is ever ready to sacrifice his own pleasures for the sake of other people2 and who loves ,truth1 ,goodness1 and ,wisdom for their own sake1 not for the benefit they may confer--is a ,theosophist4 ,but it is quite another matter to put oneself upon the path which leads to the knowledge of what is good to do1 as to the right discrimination of good from evil2 a path which also leads a man to that power through which he can do the good he desires1 often without even apparently lifting a finger4 ,moreover1 there is one important fact with which the student should be made acquainted4 ,namely1 the enormous1 almost limitless responsibility assumed by the teacher for the sake of the pupil4 ,from the ,gurus of the ,east who teach openly or secretly1 down to the few ,kabalists in ,western lands who undertake to teach the rudiments of the ,sacred ,science to their disciples--those western ,hierophants being often themselves ignorant of the danger they incur--one and all of these ,teachers are subject to the same inviolable law4 ,from the moment they begin really to teach1 from the instant they confer any power--whether psychic1 mental1 or physical--on their pupils1 they take upon themselves all the sins of that pupil1 in connexion with the ,occult ,sciences1 whether of omission or commission1 until the moment when initiation makes the pupil a ,master and responsible in his turn4 ,there is a weird and mystic religious law1 greatly reverenced and acted upon in the ,greek1 half-forgotten in the ,roman ,catholic1 and absolutely extinct in the ,protestant ,church4 ,it dates from the earliest days of ,christianity and has its basis in the law just stated1 of which it was a symbol and an expression4 ,this is the dogma of the absolute sacredness of the relation between the god-parents who stand sponsors for a child4,a ,these tacitly take upon themselves all the sins of the newly baptized child--7anointed1 as at the initiation1 a mystery truly67--until the day when the child becomes a responsible unit1 knowing good and evil4 ,thus it is clear why the ,teachers are so reticent1 and why ,chelas are required to serve a seven years probation to prove their fitness1 and develop the qualities necessary to the security of both ,master and pupil4 ,occultism is not magic4 ,it is comparatively easy to learn the trick of spells and the methods of using the subtler1 but still material1 forces of physical nature2 the powers of the animal soul in man are soon awakened2 the forces which his love1 his hate1 his passion1 can call into operation1 are readily developed4 ,but this is ,black ,magic--,sorcery4 ,for it is the motive1 and the motive alone1 which makes any exercise of power become black1 malignant1 or white1 beneficent ,magic4 ,it is impossible to employ spiritual forces if there is the slightest tinge of selfishness remaining in the operator4 ,for1 unless the intention is entirely unalloyed1 the spiritual will transform itself into the psychic1 act on the astral plane1 and dire results may be produced by it4 ,the powers and forces of animal nature can equally be used by the selfish and revengeful1 as by the unselfish and the all-forgiving2 the powers and forces of spirit lend themselves only to the perfectly pure in heart--and this is ,divine ,magic4 ,what are then the conditions required to become a student of the ,divina ,sapientia8 ,for let it be known that no such instruction can possibly be given unless these certain conditions are complied with1 and rigorously carried out during the years of study4 ,this is a sine qu non4 ,no man can swim unless he enters deep water4 ,no bird can fly unless its wings are grown1 and it has space before it and courage to trust itself to the air4 ,a man who will wield a two-edged sword1 must be a thorough master of the blunt weapon1 if he would not injure himself--or what is worse--others1 at the first attempt4 ,to give an approximate idea of the conditions under which alone the study of ,divine ,wisdom can be pursued with safety1 that is without danger that ,divine will give place to ,black ,magic1 a page is given from the private rules1 with which every instructor in the ,east is furnished4 ,the few passages which follow are chosen from a great number and explained in brackets4 99 99 99 99 99 #a4 ,the place selected for receiving instruction must be a spot calculated not to distract the mind1 and filled with influence-evolving 7magnetic7 objects4 ,the five sacred colors gathered in a circle must be there among other things4 ,the place must be free from any malignant influences hanging about in the air4 ,the place must be set apart1 and used for no other purpose4 ,the five sacred colors are the prismatic hues arranged in a certain way1 as these colors are very magnetic4 ,by malignant influences are meant any disturbances through strifes1 quarrels1 bad feelings1 etc41 as these are said to impress themselves immediately on the astral light1 i4e41 in the atmosphere of the place1 and to hang about in the air4 ,this first condition seems easy enough to accomplish1 yet--on further consideration1 it is one of the most difficult ones to obtain4 #b4 ,before the disciple shall be permitted to study face to face1 he has to acquire preliminary understanding in a select company of other lay upsakas 7disciples71 the number of whom must be odd4 ,face to face means in this instance a study independent or apart from others1 when the disciple gets his instruction face to face either with himself 7his higher1 ,divine ,self7 or--his guru4 ,it is then only that each receives his due of information1 according to the use he has made of his knowledge4 ,this can happen only toward the end of the cycle of instruction4 #c4 ,before thou 7the teacher7 shalt impart to thy ,lanoo 7disciple7 the good 7holy7 words of ,lamrin1 or shalt permit him to make ready for ,dubjed1 thou shalt take care that his mind is thoroughly purified and at peace with all1 especially with his other ,selves4 ,otherwise the words of ,wisdom and of the good ,law1 shall scatter and be picked up by the winds4 ,lamrin is a work of practical instructions1 by ,tson-kha-pa1 in two portions1 one for ecclesiastical and exoteric purposes1 the other for esoteric use4 ,to make ready for ,dubjed1 is to prepare the vessels used for seership1 such as mirrors and crystals4 ,the other selves1 refers to the fellow students4 ,unless the greatest harmony reigns among the learners1 no success is possible4 ,it is the teacher who makes the selections according to the magnetic and electric natures of the students1 bringing together and adjusting most carefully the positive and the negative elements4 #d4 ,the upsakas while studying must take care to be united as the fingers on one hand4 ,thou shalt impress upon their minds that whatever hurts one should hurt the others1 and if the rejoicing of one finds no echo in the breasts of the others1 then the required conditions are absent1 and it is useless to proceed4 ,this can hardly happen if the preliminary choice made was consistent with the magnetic requirements4 ,it is known that ,chelas otherwise promising and fit for the reception of truth1 had to wait for years on account of their temper and the impossibility they felt to put themselves in tune with their companions4 ,for-- #e4 ,the co-disciples must be tuned by the guru as the strings of a lute 7vina7 each different from the others1 yet each emitting sounds in harmony with all4 ,collectively they must form a key-board answering in all its parts to thy lightest touch 7the touch of the ,master74 ,thus their minds shall open for the harmonies of ,wisdom1 to vibrate as knowledge through each and all1 resulting in effects pleasing to the presiding gods 7tutelary or patron-angels7 and useful to the ,lanoo4 ,so shall ,wisdom be impressed forever on their hearts and the harmony of the law shall never be broken4 #f4 ,those who desire to acquire the knowledge leading to the ,siddhis 7occult powers7 have to renounce all the vanities of life and of the world 7here follows enumeration of the ,siddhis74 #g4 ,none can feel the difference between himself and his fellow-students1 such as ,i am the wisest1 ,i am more holy and pleasing to the teacher1 or in my community1 than my brother1 etc41--and remain an upsaka4 ,his thoughts must be predominantly fixed upon his heart1 chasing therefrom every hostile thought to any living being4 ,it 7the heart7 must be full of the feeling of its non-separateness from the rest of beings as from all in ,nature2 otherwise no success can follow4 #h4 ,a ,lanoo 7disciple7 has to dread external living influence alone 7magnetic emanations from living creatures74 ,for this reason while at one with all1 in his inner nature1 he must take care to separate his outer 7external7 body from every foreign influence3 none must drink out of1 or eat in his cup but himself4 ,he must avoid bodily contact 7i4e41 being touched or touch7 with human1 as with animal being4 ,no pet animals are permitted1 and it is forbidden even to touch certain trees and plants4 ,a disciple has to live1 so to say1 in his own atmosphere in order to individualize it for occult purposes4 #i4 ,the mind must remain blunt to all but the universal truths in nature1 lest the ,doctrine of the ,heart should become only the ,doctrine of the ,eye1 7i4e41 empty exoteric ritualism74 #aj4 ,no animal food of whatever kind1 nothing that has life in it should be taken by the disciple4 ,no wine1 no spirits1 or opium should be used2 for these are like the ,lhama-yin 7evil spirits71 who fasten upon the unwary1 they devour the understanding4 ,wine and spirits are supposed to contain and preserve the bad magnetism of all the men who helped in their fabrication2 the meat of each animal1 to preserve the psychic characteristics of its kind4 #aa4 ,meditation1 abstinence in all1 the observation of moral duties1 gentle thoughts1 good deeds and kind words1 as good will to all and entire oblivion of ,self1 are the most efficacious means of obtaining knowledge and preparing for the reception of higher wisdom4 #ab4 ,it is only by virtue of a strict observance of the foregoing rules that a ,lanoo can hope to acquire in good time the ,siddhis of the ,arhats1 the growth which makes him become gradually ,one with the ,universal ,,all4 99 99 99 99 99 ,these #ab extracts are taken from among some #gc rules1 to enumerate which would be useless as they would be meaningless in ,europe4 ,but even these few are enough to show the immensity of the difficulties which beset the path of the would-be ,upsaka1 who has been born and bred in ,western lands4,b ,all western1 and especially ,english1 education is instinct with the principle of emulation and strife2 each boy is urged to learn more quickly1 to outstrip his companions1 and to surpass them in every possible way4 ,what is mis-called friendly rivalry is assiduously cultivated1 and the same spirit is fostered and strengthened in every detail of life4 ,with such ideas educated into him from his childhood1 how can a ,western bring himself to feel towards his co-students as the fingers on one hand8 ,those co-students1 too1 are not of his own selection1 or chosen by himself from personal sympathy and appreciation4 ,they are chosen by his teacher on far other grounds1 and he who would be a student must first be strong enough to kill out in his heart all feelings of dislike and antipathy to others4 ,how many ,westerns are ready even to attempt this in earnest8 ,and then the details of daily life1 the command not to touch even the hand of one's nearest and dearest4 ,how contrary to ,western notions of affection and good feeling6 ,how cold and hard it seems4 ,egotistical too1 people would say1 to abstain from giving pleasure to others for the sake of one's own development4 ,well1 let those who think so defer till another lifetime the attempt to enter the path in real earnest4 ,but let them not glory in their own fancied unselfishness4 ,for1 in reality1 it is only the seeming appearances which they allow to deceive them1 the conventional notions1 based on emotionalism and gush1 or so-called courtesy1 things of the unreal life1 not the dictates of ,truth4 ,but even putting aside these difficulties1 which may be considered external1 though their importance is none the less great1 how are students in the ,west to attune themselves to harmony as here required of them8 ,so strong has personality grown in ,europe and ,america1 that there is no school of artists even whose members do not hate and are not jealous of each other4 ,professional hatred and envy have become proverbial2 men seek each to benefit himself at all costs1 and even the so-called courtesies of life are but a hollow mask covering these demons of hatred and jealousy4 ,in the ,east the spirit of non-separateness is inculcated as steadily from childhood up1 as in the ,west the spirit of rivalry4 ,personal ambition1 personal feelings and desires1 are not encouraged to grow so rampant there4 ,when the soil is naturally good1 it is cultivated in the right way1 and the child grows into a man in whom the habit of subordination of one's lower to one's higher ,self is strong and powerful4 ,in the ,west men think that their own likes and dislikes of other men and things are guiding principles for them to act upon1 even when they do not make of them the law of their lives and seek to impose them upon others4 ,let those who complain that they have learned little in the ,theosophical ,society lay to heart the words written in an article in the ,path for last ,february3--,the key in each degree is the aspirant himself4 ,it is not the fear of ,god which is the beginning of ,wisdom1 but the knowledge of ,,self which is ,,wisdom ,,itself4 ,how grand and true appears1 thus1 to the student of ,occultism who has commenced to realize some of the foregoing truths1 the answer given by the ,delphic ,oracle to all who came seeking after ,occult ,wisdom--words repeated and enforced again and again by the wise ,socrates3--,,man ,,know ,,thyself4 ,chelaship has nothing whatever to do with means of subsistence or anything of the kind1 for a man can isolate his mind entirely from his body and its surroundings4 ,chelaship is a state of mind1 rather than a life according to hard and fast rules1 on the physical plane4 ,this applies especially to the earlier1 probationary period1 while the rules given in ,lucifer for ,april last pertain properly to a later stage1 that of actual occult training and the development of occult powers and insight4 ,these rules indicate1 however1 the mode of life which ought to be followed by all aspirants so far as practicable1 since it is the most helpful to them in their aspirations4 ,it should never be forgotten that ,occultism is concerned with the inner man1 who must be strengthened and freed from the dominion of the physical body and its surroundings1 which must become his servants4 ,hence the first and chief necessity of ,chelaship is a spirit of absolute unselfishness and devotion to ,truth2 then follow self-knowledge and self-mastery4 ,these are all-important2 while outward observance of fixed rules of life is a matter of secondary moment4--,lucifer3 ,,iv1 #cdh1 note4 ,,occultism ,,versus ,,the ,,occult ,,arts ,i oft have heard1 but ne'er believed till now1 ,there are1 who can by potent magic spells ,bend to their crooked purpose ,nature's laws4 ,milton ,in this month's ,correspondence several letters testify to the strong impression produced on some minds by our last month's article ,practical ,occultism4 ,such letters go far to prove and strengthen two logical conclusions3-- 7a7 ,there are more well-educated and thoughtful men who believe in the existence of ,occultism and ,magic 7the two differing vastly7 than the modern materialist dreams of2 and3-- 7b7 ,that most of the believers 7comprising many theosophists7 have no definite idea of the nature of ,occultism and confuse it with the ,occult sciences in general1 the ,black art included4 ,their representations of the powers it confers upon man1 and of the means to be used to acquire them are as varied as they are fanciful4 ,some imagine that a master in the art1 to show the way1 is all that is needed to become a ,zanoni4 ,others1 that one has but to cross the ,canal of ,suez and go to ,india to bloom forth as a ,roger ,bacon or even a ,count ,st4 ,germain4 ,many take for their ideal ,margrave with his ever-renewing youth1 and care little for the soul as the price paid for it4 ,not a few1 mistaking ,witch-of-,endorism pure and simple1 for ,occultism--through the yawning ,earth from ,stygian gloom1 call up the meager ghost to walks of light1 and want1 on the strength of this feat1 to be regarded as full blown ,adepts4 ,ceremonial ,magic according to the rules mockingly laid down by liphas ,lvi1 is another imagined alter ego of the philosophy of the ,arhats of old4 ,in short1 the prisms through which ,occultism appears1 to those innocent of the philosophy1 are as multicolored and varied as human fancy can make them4 ,will these candidates to ,wisdom and ,power feel very indignant if told the plain truth8 ,it is not only useful1 but it has now become necessary to disabuse most of them and before it is too late4 ,this truth may be said in a few words3 ,there are not in the ,west half-a-dozen among the fervent hundreds who call themselves ,occultists1 who have even an approximately correct idea of the nature of the ,science they seek to master4 ,with a few exceptions1 they are all on the highway to ,sorcery4 ,let them restore some order in the chaos that reigns in their minds1 before they protest against this statement4 ,let them first learn the true relation in which the ,occult ,sciences stand to ,occultism1 and the difference between the two1 and then feel wrathful if they still think themselves right4 ,meanwhile1 let them learn that ,occultism differs from ,magic and other secret ,sciences as the glorious ,sun does from a rush-light1 as the immutable and immortal ,spirit of ,man--the reflection of the absolute1 causeless1 and unknowable all1--differs from the mortal clay--the human body4 ,in our highly civilized ,west1 where modern languages have been formed1 and words coined1 in the wake of ideas and thoughts--as happened with every tongue--the more the latter became materialized in the cold atmosphere of ,western selfishness and its incessant chase after the goods of this world1 the less was there any need felt for the production of new terms to express that which was tacitly regarded as obsolete and exploded superstition4 ,such words could answer only to ideas which a cultured man was scarcely supposed to harbor in his mind4 ,magic1 a synonym for jugglery2 ,sorcery1 an equivalent for crass ignorance2 and ,occultism1 the sorry relic of crack-brained1 medieval ,fire-philosophers1 of the ,jacob ,boehmes and the ,st4 ,martins1 are expressions believed more than amply sufficient to cover the whole field of thimble-rigging4 ,they are terms of contempt1 and used generally only in reference to the dross and residues of the ,dark ,ages and its preceding aeons of paganism4 ,therefore have we no terms in the ,english tongue to define and shade the difference between such abnormal powers1 or the sciences that lead to the acquisition of them1 with the nicety possible in the ,eastern languages--pre-eminently the ,sanskrit4 ,what do the words miracle and enchantment 7words identical in meaning after all1 as both express the idea of producing wonderful things by breaking the laws of nature 66 as explained by the accepted authorities7 convey to the minds of those who hear1 or who pronounce them8 ,a ,christian--breaking of the laws of nature1 notwithstanding--while believing firmly in the miracles1 because said to have been produced by ,god through ,moses1 will either scout the enchantments performed by ,pharoah's magicians1 or attribute them to the devil4 ,it is the latter whom our pious enemies connect with ,occultism1 while their impious foes1 the infidels1 laugh at ,moses1 ,magicians1 and ,occultists1 and would blush to give one serious thought to such superstitions4 ,this1 because there is no term in existence to show the difference2 no words to express the lights and shadows and draw the line of demarcation between the sublime and the true1 the absurd and the ridiculous4 ,the latter are the theological interpretations which teach the breaking of the laws of ,nature by man1 ,god1 or devil2 the former--the scientific miracles and enchantments of ,moses and the ,magicians in accordance with natural laws1 both having been learned in all the ,wisdom of the ,sanctuaries1 which were the ,royal ,societies of those days--and in true ,,occultism4 ,this last word is certainly misleading1 translated as it stands from the compound word ,gupt-,vidy1 ,secret ,knowledge4 ,but the knowledge of what8 ,some of the ,sanskrit terms may help us4 ,there are four 7out of the many other7 names of the various kinds of ,esoteric ,knowledge or ,sciences given1 even in the exoteric ,purnas4 ,there is 7#a7 ,yaja-,vidy1,c knowledge of the occult powers awakened in ,nature by the performance of certain religious ceremonies and rites4 7#b7 ,mah-,vidy1 the great knowledge1 the magic of the ,kabalists and of the ,tntrika worship1 often ,sorcery of the worst description4 7#c7 ,guhy-,vidy1 knowledge of the mystic powers residing in ,sound 7,ether71 hence in the ,mantras 7chanted prayers or incantations7 and depending on the rhythm and melody used2 in other words a magical performance based on ,knowledge of the ,forces of ,nature and their correlation2 and 7#d7 tma-,vidy1 a term which is translated simply ,knowledge of the ,soul1 true ,wisdom by the ,orientalists1 but which means far more4 ,this last is the only kind of ,occultism that any ,theosophist who admires ,light on the ,path1 and who would be wise and unselfish1 ought to strive after4 ,all the rest is some branch of the ,occult ,sciences1 i4e41 arts based on the knowledge of the ultimate essence of all things in the ,kingdom of ,nature--such as minerals1 plants1 and animals--hence of things pertaining to the realm of material ,nature1 however invisible that essence may be1 and howsoever much it has hitherto eluded the grasp of ,science4 ,alchemy1 ,astrology1 ,occult ,physiology1 ,chiromancy exist in ,nature1 and the exact ,sciences--perhaps so called because they are found in this age of paradoxical philosophies the reverse--have already discovered not a few of the secrets of the above arts4 ,but clairvoyance1 symbolized in ,india as the ,eye of ,siva1 called in ,japan1 ,infinite ,vision1 is not ,hypnotism1 the illegitimate son of ,mesmerism1 and is not to be acquired by such arts4 ,all the others may be mastered and results obtained1 whether good1 bad1 or indifferent2 but tma-,vidy sets small value on them4 ,it includes them all1 and may even use them occasionally1 but it does so after purifying them of their dross1 for beneficent purposes1 and taking care to deprive them of every element of selfish motive4 ,let us explain3 ,any man or woman can set himself or herself to study one or all of the above specified ,occult ,arts without any great previous preparation1 and even without adopting any too restraining mode of life4 ,one could even dispense with any lofty standard of morality4 ,in the last case1 of course1 ten to one the student would blossom into a very decent kind of sorcerer1 and tumble down headlong into black magic4 ,but what can this matter8 ,the ,voodoos and the ,dugpas eat1 drink and are merry over hecatombs of victims of their infernal arts4 ,and so do the amiable gentlemen vivisectionists and the diploma-ed ,hypnotizers of the ,faculties of ,medicine2 the only difference between the two classes being that the ,voodoos and the ,dugpas are conscious1 and the ,charcot-,richet crew unconscious ,sorcerers4 ,thus1 since both have to reap the fruits of their labors and achievements in the black art1 the ,western practitioners should not have the punishment and reputation without the profits and enjoyments they may get therefrom4 ,for we say it again1 hypnotism and vivisection as practised in such schools1 are ,sorcery pure and simple1 minus a knowledge that the ,voodoos and ,dugpas enjoy1 and which no ,charcot-,richet can procure for himself in fifty years of hard study and experimental observation4 ,let then those who will dabble in magic1 whether they understand its nature or not1 but who find the rules imposed upon students too hard1 and who1 therefore1 lay tma-,vidy or ,occultism aside--go without it4 ,let them become magicians by all means1 even though they do become ,voodoos and ,dugpas for the next ten incarnations4 ,but the interest of our readers will probably center on those who are invincibly attracted towards the ,occult1 yet who neither realize the true nature of what they aspire towards1 nor have they become passion-proof1 far less truly unselfish4 ,how about these unfortunates1 we shall be asked1 who are thus rent in twain by conflicting forces8 ,for it has been said too often to need repetition1 and the fact itself is patent to any observer1 that when once the desire for ,occultism has really awakened in a man's heart1 there remains for him no hope of peace1 no place of rest and comfort in all the world4 ,he is driven out into the wild and desolate spaces of life by an ever-gnawing unrest he cannot quell4 ,his heart is too full of passion and selfish desire to permit him to pass the ,golden ,gate2 he cannot find rest or peace in ordinary life4 ,must he then inevitably fall into sorcery and black magic1 and through many incarnations heap up for himself a terrible ,karma8 ,is there no other road for him8 ,indeed there is1 we answer4 ,let him aspire to no higher than he feels able to accomplish4 ,let him not take a burden upon himself too heavy for him to carry4 ,without ever becoming a ,mahtm1 a ,buddha1 or a ,great ,saint1 let him study the philosophy and the ,science of ,soul1 and he can become one of the modest benefactors of humanity1 without any superhuman powers4 ,siddhis 7or the ,arhat powers7 are only for those who are able to lead the life1 to comply with the terrible sacrifices required for such a training1 and to comply with them to the very letter4 ,let them know at once and remember always1 that true ,occultism or ,theosophy is the ,great ,renunciation of ,,self1 unconditionally and absolutely1 in thought as in action4 ,it is ,,altruism1 and it throws him who practises it out of calculation of the ranks of the living altogether4 ,not for himself1 but for the world1 he lives1 as soon as he has pledged himself to the work4 ,much is forgiven during the first years of probation4 ,but1 no sooner is he accepted than his personality must disappear1 and he has to become a mere beneficent force in ,nature4 ,there are two poles for him after that1 two paths1 and no midward place of rest4 ,he has either to ascend laboriously1 step by step1 often through numerous incarnations and no ,devachanic break1 the golden ladder leading to ,mahtmship 7the ,arhat or ,bodhisattva condition71 or--he will let himself slide down the ladder at the first false step1 and roll down into ,dugpa-ship4444 ,all this is either unknown or left out of sight altogether4 ,indeed1 one who is able to follow the silent evolution of the preliminary aspirations of the candidates1 often finds strange ideas quietly taking possession of their minds4 ,there are those whose reasoning powers have been so distorted by foreign influences that they imagine that animal passions can be so sublimated and elevated that their fury1 force1 and fire can1 so to speak1 be turned inwards2 that they can be stored and shut up in one's breast1 until their energy is1 not expanded1 but turned toward higher and more holy purposes2 namely1 until their collective and unexpanded strength enables their possessor to enter the true ,sanctuary of the ,soul and stand therein in the presence of the ,master--the ,higher ,self6 ,for this purpose they will not struggle with their passions nor slay them4 ,they will simply1 by a strong effort of will put down the fierce flames and keep them at bay within their natures1 allowing the fire to smolder under a thin layer of ashes4 ,they submit joyfully to the torture of the ,spartan boy who allowed the fox to devour his entrails rather than part with it4 ,oh1 poor1 blind visionaries6 ,as well hope that a band of drunken chimney-sweeps1 hot and greasy from their work1 may be shut up in a ,sanctuary hung with pure white linen1 and that instead of soiling and turning it by their presence into a heap of dirty shreds1 they will become masters in and of the sacred recess1 and finally emerge from it as immaculate as that recess4 ,why not imagine that a dozen of skunks imprisoned in the pure atmosphere of a ,dgon-pa 7a monastery7 can issue out of it impregnated with all the perfumes of the incenses used8444 ,strange aberration of the human mind4 ,can it be so8 ,let us argue4 ,the ,master in the ,sanctuary of our souls is the ,higher ,self--the divine spirit whose consciousness is based upon and derived solely 7at any rate during the mortal life of the man in whom it is captive7 from the ,mind1 which we have agreed to call the ,human ,soul 7the ,spiritual ,soul being the vehicle of the ,spirit74 ,in its turn the former 7the personal or human soul7 is a compound in its highest form1 of spiritual aspirations1 volitions and divine love2 and in its lower aspect1 of animal desires and terrestrial passions imparted to it by its associations with its vehicle1 the seat of all these4 ,it thus stands as a link and a medium between the animal nature of man which its higher reason seeks to subdue1 and his divine spiritual nature to which it gravitates1 whenever it has the upper hand in its struggle with the inner animal4 ,the latter is the instinctual animal ,soul and is the hotbed of those passions1 which1 as just shown1 are lulled instead of being killed1 and locked up in their breasts by some imprudent enthusiasts4 ,do they still hope to turn thereby the muddy stream of the animal sewer into the crystalline waters of life8 ,and where1 on what neutral ground can they be imprisoned so as not to affect man8 ,the fierce passions of love and lust are still alive and they are allowed to still remain in the place of their birth--that same animal soul2 for both the higher and the lower portions of the ,human ,soul or ,mind reject such inmates1 though they cannot avoid being tainted with them as neighbors4 ,the ,higher ,self or ,spirit is as unable to assimilate such feelings as water to get mixed with oil or unclean liquid tallow4 ,it is thus the mind alone--the sole link and medium between the man of earth and the ,higher ,self--that is the only sufferer1 and which is in the incessant danger of being dragged down by those passions that may be reawakened at any moment1 and perish in the abyss of matter4 ,and how can it ever attune itself to the divine harmony of the highest ,principle1 when that harmony is destroyed by the mere presence1 within the ,sanctuary in preparation1 of such animal passions8 ,how can harmony prevail and conquer1 when the soul is stained and distracted with the turmoil of passions and the terrestrial desires of the bodily senses1 or even of the ,astral man8 ,for this ,astral--the shadowy double 7in the animal as in man7--is not the companion of the divine ,ego but of the earthly body4 ,it is the link between the personal ,self1 the lower consciousness of ,manas and the ,body1 and is the vehicle of transitory1 not of immortal life4 ,like the shadow projected by man1 it follows his movements and impulses slavishly and mechanically1 and leans therefore to matter without ever ascending to ,spirit4 ,it is only when the power of the passions is dead altogether1 and when they have been crushed and annihilated in the retort of an unflinching will2 when not only all the lusts and longings of the flesh are dead1 but also the recognition of the personal ,self is killed out and the astral has been reduced in consequence to a cipher1 that the ,union with the ,higher ,self can take place4 ,then when the astral reflects only the conquered man1 the still living1 but no more the longing1 selfish personality1 then the brilliant ,augoeides1 the divine ,self1 can vibrate in conscious harmony with both the poles of the human ,entity--the man of matter purified1 and the ever pure ,spiritual ,soul--and stand in the presence of the ,master ,self1 the ,christos of the mystic ,gnostics1 blended1 merged into1 and one with ,,it for ever4,d ,how then can it be thought possible for a man to enter the strait gate of occultism when his daily and hourly thoughts are bound up with worldly things1 desires of possession and power1 with lust1 ambition and duties1 which1 however honorable1 are still of the earth earthy8 ,even the love for wife and family--the purest as the most unselfish of human affections--is a barrier to real occultism4 ,for whether we take as an example the holy love of a mother for her child1 or that of a husband for his wife1 even in these feelings1 when analysed to the very bottom1 and thoroughly sifted1 there is still selfishness in the first1 and an goisme deux in the second instance4 ,what mother would not sacrifice without a moment's hesitation hundreds and thousands of lives for that of the child of her heart8 and what lover or true husband would not break the happiness of every other man and woman around him to satisfy the desire of one whom he loves8 ,this is but natural1 we shall be told4 ,quite so2 in the light of the code of human affections2 less so1 in that of divine universal love4 ,for1 while the heart is full of thoughts for a little group of selves1 near and dear to us1 how shall the rest of mankind fare in our souls8 ,what percentage of love and care will there remain to bestow on the great orphan8 ,and how shall the still small voice make itself heard in a soul entirely occupied with its own privileged tenants8 ,what room is there left for the needs of ,humanity en bloc to impress themselves upon1 or even receive a speedy response8 ,and yet1 he who would profit by the wisdom of the universal mind1 has to reach it through the whole of ,humanity without distinction of race1 complexion1 religion or social status4 ,it is altruism1 not ego-ism even in its most legal and noble conception1 that can lead the unit to merge its little ,self in the ,universal ,selves4 ,it is to these needs and to this work that the true disciple of true ,occultism has to devote himself1 if he would obtain theo-sophy1 divine ,wisdom and ,knowledge4 ,the aspirant has to choose absolutely between the life of the world and the life of ,occultism4 ,it is useless and vain to endeavor to unite the two1 for no one can serve two masters and satisfy both4 ,no one can serve his body and the higher ,soul1 and do his family duty and his universal duty1 without depriving either one or the other of its rights2 for he will either lend his ear to the still small voice and fail to hear the cries of his little ones1 or1 he will listen but to the wants of the latter and remain deaf to the voice of ,humanity4 ,it would be a ceaseless1 a maddening struggle for almost any married man1 who would pursue true practical ,occultism1 instead of its theoretical philosophy4 ,for he would find himself ever hesitating between the voice of the impersonal divine love of ,humanity1 and that of the personal1 terrestrial love4 ,and this could only lead him to fail in one or the other1 or perhaps in both his duties4 ,worse than this2 for1 whoever indulges1 after having pledged himself to ,,occultism1 in the gratification of a terrestrial love or lust1 must feel an almost immediate result2 that of being irresistibly dragged from the impersonal divine state down to the lower plane of matter4 ,sensual1 or even mental self-gratification1 involves the immediate loss of the powers of spiritual discernment2 the voice of the ,,master can no longer be distinguished from that of one's passions or even that of a ,dugpa2 the right from wrong2 sound morality from mere casuistry4 ,the ,dead ,sea fruit assumes the most glorious mystic appearance1 only to turn to ashes on the lips1 and to gall in the heart1 resulting in3-- ,depth ever deepening1 darkness darkening still2 ,folly for wisdom1 guilt for innocence2 ,anguish for rapture1 and for hope despair4 ,and once being mistaken and having acted on their mistakes1 most men shrink from realizing their error1 and thus descend deeper and deeper into the mire4 ,and1 although it is the intention that decides primarily whether white or black magic is exercised1 yet the results even of involuntary1 unconscious sorcery cannot fail to be productive of bad ,karma4 ,enough has been said to show that sorcery is any kind of evil influence exercised upon other persons1 who suffer1 or make other persons suffer1 in consequence4 ,karma is a heavy stone splashed in the quiet waters of ,life2 and it must produce ever widening circles of ripples1 carried wider and wider1 almost ad infinitum4 ,such causes produced have to call forth effects1 and these are evidenced in the just laws of ,retribution4 ,much of this may be avoided if people will only abstain from rushing into practices neither the nature nor importance of which they understand4 ,no one is expected to carry a burden beyond his strength and powers4 ,there are natural-born magicians2 ,mystics and ,occultists by birth1 and by right of direct inheritance from a series of incarnations and aeons of suffering and failures4 ,these are passion-proof1 so to say4 ,no fires of earthly origin can fan into a flame any of their senses or desires2 no human voice can find response in their souls1 except the great cry of ,humanity4 ,these only may be certain of success4 ,but they can be met only far and wide1 and they pass through the narrow gates of ,occultism because they carry no personal luggage of human transitory sentiments along with them4 ,they have got rid of the feeling of the lower personality1 paralysed thereby the astral animal1 and the golden1 but narrow gate is thrown open before them4 ,not so with those who have to carry yet for several incarnations the burden of sins committed in previous lives1 and even in their present existence4 ,for such1 unless they proceed with great caution1 the golden gate of ,wisdom may get transformed into the wide gate and the broad way that leadeth unto destruction1 and therefore many be they that enter in thereby4 ,this is the ,gate of the ,occult arts1 practised for selfish motives and in the absence of the restraining and beneficent influence of tma-,vidy4 ,we are in the ,kali ,yuga and its fatal influence is a thousand-fold more powerful in the ,west than it is in the ,east2 hence the easy preys made by the ,powers of the ,age of ,darkness in this cyclic struggle1 and the many delusions under which the world is now laboring4 ,one of these is the relative facility with which men fancy they can get at the ,gate and cross the threshold of ,occultism without any great sacrifice4 ,it is the dream of most ,theosophists1 one inspired by desire for ,power and personal selfishness1 and it is not such feelings that can ever lead them to the coveted goal4 ,for1 as well said by one believed to have sacrificed himself for ,humanity--,strait is the gate and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life eternal1 and therefore few there be that find it4 7,matt4 vii1 #ad7 ,so strait indeed1 that at the bare mention of some of the preliminary difficulties the affrighted ,western candidates turn back and retreat with a shudder4444 ,let them stop here and attempt no more in their great weakness4 ,for if1 while turning their backs on the narrow gate1 they are dragged by their desire for the ,occult one step in the direction of the broad and more inviting gates of that golden mystery which glitters in the light of illusion1 woe to them6 ,it can lead only to ,dugpa-ship1 and they will be sure to find themselves very soon landed on that ,via ,fatale of the ,inferno1 over whose portal ,dante read the words3-- ,per me si va nella citta dolente ,per me si va nell' eterno dolore ,per me si va tra la perduta gente4444 ,,the ,,blessings ,,of ,,publicity ,a well-known public lecturer1 a distinguished ,egyptologist1 said1 in one of his lectures against the teachings of ,theosophy1 a few suggestive words1 which are now quoted and must be answered3-- ,it is a delusion to suppose there is anything in the experience or wisdom of the past1 the ascertained results of which can only be communicated from beneath the cloak and mask of mystery4444 ,explanation is the ,soul of ,science4 ,they will tell you we cannot have their knowledge without living their life4444 ,public experimental research1 the printing press1 and a free-thought platform1 have abolished the need of mystery4 ,it is no longer necessary for science to take the veil1 as she was forced to do for security in times past4444 ,this is a very mistaken view in one aspect4 ,secrets of the purer and profounder life not only may but must be made universally known4 ,but there are secrets that kill in the arcana of ,occultism1 and unless a man lives the life he cannot be entrusted with them4 ,the late ,professor ,faraday had very serious doubts whether it was quite wise and reasonable to give out to the public at large certain discoveries of modern science4 ,chemistry had led to the invention of too terrible means of destruction in our century to allow it to fall into the hands of the profane4 ,what man of sense--in the face of such fiendish applications of dynamite and other explosive substances as are made by those incarnations of the ,destroying ,power1 who glory in calling themselves ,anarchists and ,socialists--would not agree with us in saying3--,far better for mankind that it should never have blasted a rock by modern perfected means1 than that it should have shattered the limbs of one per cent even of those who have been thus destroyed by the pitiless hand of ,russian ,nihilists1 ,irish ,fenians1 and ,anarchists4 ,that such discoveries1 and chiefly their murderous application1 ought to have been withheld from public knowledge may be shown on the authority of statistics and commissions appointed to investigate and record the result of the evil done4 ,the following information gathered from public papers will give an insight into what may be in store for wretched mankind4 ,england alone--the center of civilization--has #ba1bfh firms fabricating and selling explosive substances4,e ,but the centers of the dynamite trade1 of infernal machines1 and other such results of modern civilization1 are chiefly at ,philadelphia and ,new ,york4 ,it is in the former city of ,brotherly ,love that the now most famous manufacturer of explosives flourishes4 ,it is one of the well-known respectable citizens--the inventor and manufacturer of the most murderous dynamite toys--who1 called before the ,senate of the ,united ,states anxious to adopt means for the repression of a too free trade in such implements1 found an argument that ought to become immortalized for its cynical sophistry--,my machines1 that expert is reported to have said--are quite harmless to look at2 as they may be manufactured in the shape of oranges1 hats1 boats1 and anything one likes4444 ,criminal is he who murders people by means of such machines1 not he who manufactures them4 ,the firm refuses to admit that were there no supply there would be no incentive for demand on the market2 but insists that every demand should be satisfied by a supply ready at hand4 ,that supply is the fruit of civilization and of the publicity given to the discovery of every murderous property in matter4 ,what is it8 ,as found in the ,report of the ,commission appointed to investigate the variety and character of the so-called infernal machines1 so far the following implements of instantaneous human destruction are already on hand4 ,the most fashionable of all among the many varieties fabricated by ,mr4 ,holgate are the ,ticker1 the ,eight ,day ,machine1 the ,little ,exterminator1 and the ,bottle ,machines4 ,the ,ticker is in appearance like a piece of lead1 a foot long and four inches thick4 ,it contains an iron or steel tube full of a kind of gunpowder invented by ,holgate himself4 ,that gunpowder1 in appearance like any other common stuff of that name1 has1 however1 an explosive power two hundred times stronger than common gunpowder2 the ,ticker containing thus a powder which equals in force two hundred pounds of the common gunpowder4 ,at one end of the machine is fastened an invisible clock-work meant to regulate the time of the explosion1 which time may be fixed from one minute to thirty-six hours4 ,the spark is produced by means of a steel needle which gives a spark at the touch-hole1 and communicates thereby the fire to the whole machine4 ,the ,eight ,day ,machine is considered the most powerful1 but at the same time the most complicated1 of all those invented4 ,one must be familiar with handling it before a full success can be secured4 ,it is owing to this difficulty that the terrible fate intended for ,london ,bridge and its neighborhood was turned aside by the instantaneous killing instead of the two ,fenian criminals4 ,the size and appearance of that machine changes1 ,proteus-like1 according to the necessity of smuggling it in1 in one or another way1 unperceived by the victims4 ,it may be concealed in bread1 in a basket of oranges1 in a liquid1 and so on4 ,the ,commission of ,experts is said to have declared that its explosive power is such as to reduce to atoms instantly the largest edifice in the world4 ,the ,little ,exterminator is an innocent-looking plain utensil having the shape of a modest jug4 ,it contains neither dynamite nor powder1 but secretes1 nevertheless1 a deadly gas1 and has a hardly perceptible clock-work attached to its edge1 the needle of which points to the time when that gas will effect its escape4 ,in a shut-up room this new vril of lethal kind will smother to death1 nearly instantaneously1 every living being within a distance of a hundred feet radius of the murderous jug4 ,with these three latest novelties in the high season of ,christian civilization1 the catalog of the dynamiters is closed2 all the rest belongs to the old fashion of the past years4 ,it consists of hats1 porte cigars1 bottles of ordinary kind1 and even ladies' smelling bottles1 filled with dynamite1 nitro-glycerin1 etc41 etc4--weapons1 some of which1 following unconsciously ,karmic law1 killed many of the dynamiters in the last ,chicago revolution4 ,add to this the forthcoming long-promised ,keeley's vibratory force1 capable of reducing in a few seconds a dead bullock to a heap of ashes1 and then ask yourself if the ,inferno of ,dante as a locality can ever rival earth in the production of more hellish engines of destruction8 ,thus1 if purely material implements are capable of blowing up1 from a few corners1 the greatest cities of the globe1 provided the murderous weapons are guided by expert hands--what terrible dangers might not arise from magical occult secrets being revealed1 and allowed to fall into the possession of ill-meaning persons6 ,a thousand times more dangerous and lethal are these1 because neither the criminal hand1 nor the immaterial invisible weapon used1 can ever be detected4 ,the congenital black magicians--those who1 to an innate propensity towards evil1 unite highly-developed mediumistic natures--are but too numerous in our age4 ,it is nigh time then that the psychologists and believers1 at least1 should cease advocating the beauties of publicity and claiming knowledge of the secrets of nature for all4 ,it is not in our age of suggestion and explosives that ,occultism can open wide the doors of its laboratories except to those who do live the life4 ,h4,p4,b4 ,,footnotes3 ,a ,so holy is the connexion thus formed deemed in the ,greek ,church1 that a marriage between god-parents of the same child is regarded as the worst kind of incest1 is considered illegal1 and is dissolved by law2 and this absolute prohibition extends even to the children of one of the sponsors as regards those of the other4 ,b ,be it remembered that all ,chelas1 even lay disciples1 are called ,upsaka until after their first initiation1 when they become ,lanoo-,upsaka4 ,to that day1 even those who belong to ,lamaseries and are set apart1 are considered as laymen4 ,c ,the ,yaja1 say the ,brhmans1 exists from eternity1 for ,yajus or sacrificial mysteries4 ',the ,yaja' exists as an invisible thing at all times2 it is like the latent power of electricity in an electrifying machine1 requiring only the operation of a suitable apparatus in order to be elicited4 ,it is supposed to extend from the ,ahavaniya or sacrificial fire to the heavens1 forming a bridge or ladder by means of which the sacrificer can communicate with the world of gods and spirits1 and even ascend when alive to their abodes4--,martin ,haug's ,aitareya ,brhmana4 ,this ,yaja is again one of the forms of the ksa2 and the mystic word
