the story of the birth of ,christian ,science1 in #ahff1 and its progress during the ensuing thirty years4 ,three quarters of a century hence1 when the children of to-day are the elders of the twentieth century1 it will be interesting to have not only a record of the inclination given their own thoughts in the latter half of the nineteenth century1 but also a registry of the rise of the mercury in the glass of the world's opinion4 ,it will then be instructive to turn backward the telescope of that advanced age1 with its lenses of more spiritual mentality1 indicating the gain of intellectual momentum1 on the early footsteps of ,christian ,science as planted in the pathway of this generation2 to note the impetus thereby given to ,christianity2 to con the facts surrounding the for the accuser is not there1 and ,love sends forth her primal and everlasting strain4 ,self-abnegation1 by which we lay down all for ,truth1 or ,christ1 in our warfare against error1 is a rule in his own malice2 but how many periods of torture it may take to remove all sin1 must depend upon sin's obduracy4 ,revelation xii4 #ac4 ,and when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth1 he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child4 ,the march of mind and of honest investigation will bring the hour when the people will chain1 with fetters of some sort1 the growing occultism of this period4 ,the present apathy as to the tendency of certain active yet unseen mental agencies will finally be shocked into another extreme mortal mood1--into human indignation2 for one extreme since exposure is necessary to ensure the avoidance of the evil8 ,because people like you better when you tell them their virtues than when you tell them their vices4 ,it requires the spirit of our intersection of ,norway and ,falmouth ,streets1 on a triangular plot of ground1 the design a ,romanesque tower with a circular front and an octagonal form1 accented by stone porticos and turreted corners4 ,on the front is a marble tablet1 with the following inscription carved in bold relief3-- ,the ,first ,church of ,christ1 ,scientist1 erected ,anno ,domini #ahid4 ,a testimonial to our beloved teacher1 the ,rev4 ,mary ,baker ,eddy1 ,discoverer and ,founder of ,christian ,science2 author of ,science and ,health with ,key to the ,scriptures2 president of the ,massachusetts ,metaphysical ,college1 and the first pastor of this denomination4 ,,the ,,church ,,edifice ,the church is built of ,concord granite in light gray1 with trimmings of the pink granite of ,new ,hampshire1 ,mrs4 ,eddy's native ,state4 ,the architecture is ,romanesque throughout4 ,the tower is one hundred and twenty feet in height and twenty-one and one half feet square4 ,the entrances are of marble1 with doors of antique oak richly carved4 ,the windows of stained glass are very rich in pictorial effect4 ,the lighting and cooling of the church--for cooling is a recognized feature as well as heating--are done by electricity1 and the heat generated by two large boilers in the basement is distributed by the four systems with motor electric power4 ,the partitions are of iron2 the floors of marble in mosaic work1 and the edifice is therefore as literally fire-proof as is conceivable4 ,the principal features are the auditorium1 seating eleven hundred people and capable of holding fifteen hundred2 the ,mother's ,room1 designed for the exclusive use of ,mrs4 ,eddy2 the directors' room1 and the vestry4 ,the girders are all of iron1 the roof is of terra cotta tiles1 the galleries are in plaster relief1 the window frames are of iron1 coated with plaster2 the staircases are of iron1 with marble stairs of rose pink1 and marble approaches4 ,the vestibule is a fitting entrance to this magnificent temple4 ,in the ceiling is a sunburst with a seven-pointed star1 which illuminates it4 ,from this are the entrances leading to the auditorium1 the ,mother's ,room1 and the directors' room4 ,the auditorium is seated with pews of curly birch1 upholstered in old rose plush4 ,the floor is in white ,italian mosaic1 with frieze of the old rose1 and the wainscoting repeats the same tints4 ,the base and cap are of pink ,tennessee marble4 ,on the walls are bracketed oxidized silver lamps of ,roman design1 and there are frequent illuminated texts from the ,bible and from ,mrs4 ,eddy's ,science and ,health with ,key to the ,scriptures impanelled4 ,a sunburst in the centre of the ceiling takes the place of chandeliers4 ,there is a disc of cut glass in decorative designs1 covering one hundred and forty-four electric lights in the form of a star1 which is twenty-one inches from point to point1 the centre being of pure white light1 and each ray under prisms which reflect the rainbow tints4 ,the galleries are richly panelled in relief work4 ,the organ and choir gallery is spacious and rich beyond the power of words to depict4 ,the platform--corresponding to the chancel of an ,episcopal church--is a mosaic work1 with richly carved seats following the sweep of its curve1 with a lamp stand of the ,renaissance period on either end1 bearing six richly wrought oxidized silver lamps1 eight feet in height4 ,the great organ comes from ,detroit4 ,it is one of vast compass1 with olian attachment1 and cost eleven thousand dollars4 ,it is the gift of a single individual--a votive offering of gratitude for the healing of the wife of the donor4 ,the chime of bells includes fifteen1 of fine range and perfect tone4 ,,the ,,mother',s ,,room ,the ,mother's ,room is approached by an entrance of ,italian marble1 and over the door1 in large golden letters on a marble tablet1 is the word ,love4 ,in this room the mosaic marble floor of white has a ,romanesque border and is decorated with sprays of fig leaves bearing fruit4 ,the room is toned in pale green with relief in old rose4 ,the mantel is of onyx and gold4 ,before the great bay window hangs an ,athenian lamp over two hundred years old1 which will be kept always burning day and night4 ,leading off the ,mother's ,room are toilet apartments1 with full-length ,french mirrors and every convenience4 ,the directors' room is very beautiful in marble approaches and rich carving1 and off this is a vault for the safe preservation of papers4 ,the vestry seats eight hundred people1 and opening from it are three large class-rooms and the pastor's study4 ,the windows are a remarkable feature of this temple4 ,there are no memorial windows2 the entire church is a testimonial1 not a memorial--a point that the members strongly insist upon4 ,in the auditorium are two rose windows--one representing the heavenly city which cometh down from ,god out of heaven1 with six small windows beneath1 emblematic of the six water-pots referred to in ,john ii4 #f4 ,the other rose window represents the raising of the daughter of ,jairus4 ,beneath are two small windows bearing palms of victory1 and others with lamps1 typical of ,science and ,health4 ,another great window tells its pictorial story of the four ,marys--the mother of ,jesus1 ,mary anointing the head of ,jesus1 ,mary washing the feet of ,jesus1 ,mary at the resurrection2 and the woman spoken of in the ,apocalypse1 chapter #ab1 ,god-crowned4 ,one more window in the auditorium represents the raising of ,lazarus4 ,in the gallery are windows representing ,john on the ,isle of ,patmos1 and others of pictorial significance4 ,in the ,mother's ,room the windows are of still more unique interest4 ,a large bay window1 composed of three separate panels1 is designed to be wholly typical of the work of ,mrs4 ,eddy4 ,the central panel represents her in solitude and meditation1 searching the ,scriptures by the light of a single candle1 while the star of ,bethlehem shines down from above4 ,above this is a panel containing the ,christian ,science seal1 and other panels are decorated with emblematic designs1 with the legends1 ,heal the ,sick1 ,raise the ,dead1 ,cleanse the ,lepers1 and ,cast out ,demons4 ,the cross and the crown and the star are presented in appropriate decorative effect4 ,the cost of this church is two hundred and twenty-one thousand dollars1 exclusive of the land--a gift from ,mrs4 ,eddy--which is valued at some forty thousand dollars4 ,,the ,,order ,,of ,,service ,the order of service in the ,christian ,science ,church does not differ widely from that of any other sect1 save that its service includes the use of ,mrs4 ,eddy's book1 entitled ,science and ,health with ,key to the ,scriptures1 in perhaps equal measure to its use of the ,bible4 ,the reading is from the two alternately2 the singing is from a compilation called the ,christian ,science ,hymnal1 but its songs are for the most part those devotional hymns from ,herbert1 ,faber1 ,robertson1 ,wesley1 ,bowring1 and other recognized devotional poets1 with selections from ,whittier and ,lowell1 as are found in the hymn-books of the ,unitarian churches4 ,for the past year or two ,judge ,hanna1 formerly of ,chicago1 has filled the office of pastor to the church in this city1 which held its meetings in ,chickering ,hall1 and later in ,copley ,hall1 in the new ,grundmann ,studio ,building on ,copley ,square4 ,preceding ,judge ,hanna were ,rev4 ,d4,a4 ,easton and ,rev4 ,l4,p4 ,norcross1 both of whom had formerly been ,congregational clergymen4 ,the organizer and first pastor of the church here was ,mrs4 ,eddy herself1 of whose work ,i shall venture to speak1 a little later1 in this article4 ,last ,sunday ,i gave myself the pleasure of attending the service held in ,copley ,hall4 ,the spacious apartment was thronged with a congregation whose remarkable earnestness impressed the observer4 ,there was no straggling of late-comers4 ,before the appointed hour every seat in the hall was filled and a large number of chairs pressed into service for the overflowing throng4 ,the music was spirited1 and the selections from the ,bible and from ,science and ,health were finely read by ,judge ,hanna4 ,then came his sermon1 which dealt directly with the command of ,christ to heal the sick1 raise the dead1 cleanse the lepers1 cast out demons4 ,in his admirable discourse ,judge ,hanna said that while all these injunctions could1 under certain conditions1 be interpreted and fulfilled literally1 the special lesson was to be taken spiritually--to cleanse the leprosy of sin1 to cast out the demons of evil thought4 ,the discourse was able1 and helpful in its suggestive interpretation4 ,,the ,,church ,,members ,later ,i was told that almost the entire congregation was composed of persons who had either been themselves1 or had seen members of their own families1 healed by ,christian ,science treatment2 and ,i was further told that once when a ,boston clergyman remonstrated with ,judge ,hanna for enticing a separate congregation rather than offering their strength to unite with churches already established--,i was told he replied that the ,christian ,science ,church did not recruit itself from other churches1 but from the graveyards6 ,the church numbers now four thousand members2 but this estimate1 as ,i understand1 is not limited to the ,boston adherents1 but includes those all over the country4 ,the ceremonial of uniting is to sign a brief confession of faith1 written by ,mrs4 ,eddy1 and to unite in communion1 which is not celebrated by outward symbols of bread and wine1 but by uniting in silent prayer4 ,the confession of faith includes the declaration that the ,scriptures are the guide to eternal ,life2 that there is a ,supreme ,being1 and ,his ,son1 and the ,holy ,ghost1 and that man is made in ,his image4 ,it affirms the atonement2 it recognizes ,jesus as the teacher and guide to salvation2 the forgiveness of sin by ,god1 and affirms the power of ,truth over error1 and the need of living faith at the moment to realize the possibilities of the divine ,life4 ,the entire membership of ,christian ,scientists throughout the world now exceeds two hundred thousand people4 ,the church in ,boston was organized by ,mrs4 ,eddy1 and the first meeting held on ,april #ai1 #ahgi4 ,it opened with twenty-six members1 and within fifteen years it has grown to its present impressive proportions1 and has now its own magnificent church building1 costing over two hundred thousand dollars1 and entirely paid for when its consecration service on ,january #f shall be celebrated4 ,this is certainly a very remarkable retrospect4 ,rev4 ,mary ,baker ,eddy1 the ,founder of this denomination and ,discoverer of ,christian ,science1 as they term her work in affirming the present application of the principles asserted by ,jesus1 is a most interesting personality4 ,at the risk of colloquialism1 ,i am tempted to begin at the beginning of my own knowledge of ,mrs4 ,eddy1 and take1 as the point of departure1 my first meeting with her and the subsequent development of some degree of familiarity with the work of her life which that meeting inaugurated for me4 ,,mrs4 ,,eddy ,it was during some year in the early '#hj's that ,i became aware--from that close contact with public feeling resulting from editorial work in daily journalism--that the ,boston atmosphere was largely thrilled and pervaded by a new and increasing interest in the dominance of mind over matter1 and that the central figure in all this agitation was ,mrs4 ,eddy4 ,to a note which ,i wrote her1 begging the favor of an interview for press use1 she most kindly replied1 naming an evening on which she would receive me4 ,at the hour named ,i rang the bell at a spacious house on ,columbus ,avenue1 and ,i was hardly more than seated before ,mrs4 ,eddy entered the room4 ,she impressed me as singularly graceful and winning in bearing and manner1 and with great claim to personal beauty4 ,her figure was tall1 slender1 and as flexible in movement as that of a ,delsarte disciple2 her face1 framed in dark hair and lighted by luminous blue eyes1 had the transparency and rose-flush of tint so often seen in ,new ,england1 and she was magnetic1 earnest1 impassioned4 ,no photographs can do the least justice to ,mrs4 ,eddy1 as her beautiful complexion and changeful expression cannot thus be reproduced4 ,at once one would perceive that she had the temperament to dominate1 to lead1 to control1 not by any crude self-assertion1 but a spiritual animus4 ,of course such a personality1 with the wonderful tumult in the air that her large and enthusiastic following excited1 fascinated the imagination4 ,what had she originated8 ,i mentally questioned this modern ,st4 ,catherine1 who was dominating her followers like any abbess of old4 ,she told me the story of her life1 so far as outward events may translate those inner experiences which alone are significant4 ,mary ,baker was the daughter of ,mark and ,abigail 7,ambrose7 ,baker1 and was born in ,concord1 ,n4,h41 somewhere in the early decade of #ahbj-'cj4 ,at the time ,i met her she must have been some sixty years of age1 yet she had the coloring and the elastic bearing of a woman of thirty1 and this1 she told me1 was due to the principles of ,christian ,science4 ,on her father's side ,mrs4 ,eddy came from ,scotch and ,english ancestry1 and ,hannah ,more was a relative of her grandmother4 ,deacon ,ambrose1 her maternal grandfather1 was known as a godly man1 and her mother was a religious enthusiast1 a saintly and consecrated character4 ,one of her brothers1 ,albert ,baker1 graduated at ,dartmouth and achieved eminence as a lawyer4 ,,mrs4 ,,eddy ,,as ,a ,,child ,as a child ,mary ,baker saw visions and dreamed dreams4 ,when eight years of age she began1 like ,jeanne d',arc1 to hear voices1 and for a year she heard her name called distinctly1 and would often run to her mother questioning if she were wanted4 ,one night the mother related to her the story of ,samuel1 and bade her1 if she heard the voice again to reply as he did3 ,speak1 ,lord1 for ,thy servant heareth4 ,the call came1 but the little maid was afraid and did not reply4 ,this caused her tears of remorse and she prayed for forgiveness1 and promised to reply if the call came again4 ,it came1 and she answered as her mother had bidden her1 and after that it ceased4 ,these experiences1 of which ,catholic biographies are full1 and which history not infrequently emphasizes1 certainly offer food for meditation4 ,theodore ,parker related that when he was a lad1 at work in a field one day on his father's farm at ,lexington1 an old man with a snowy beard suddenly appeared at his side1 and walked with him as he worked1 giving him high counsel and serious thought4 ,all inquiry in the neighborhood as to whence the stranger came or whither he went was fruitless2 no one else had seen him1 and ,mr4 ,parker always believed1 so a friend has told me1 that his visitor was a spiritual form from another world4 ,it is certainly true that many and many persons1 whose life has been destined to more than ordinary achievement1 have had experiences of voices or visions in their early youth4 ,at an early age ,miss ,baker was married to ,colonel ,glover1 of ,charleston1 ,s4,c41 who lived only a year4 ,she returned to her father's home--in #ahdd--;and from that time until #ahff no special record is to be made4 ,in #ahff1 while living in ,lynn1 ,mass41 ,mrs4 ,eddy 7then ,mrs4 ,glover7 met with a severe accident1 and her case was pronounced hopeless by the physicians4 ,there came a ,sunday morning when her pastor came to bid her good-by before proceeding to his morning service1 as there was no probability that she would be alive at its close4 ,during this time she suddenly became aware of a divine illumination and ministration4 ,she requested those with her to withdraw1 and reluctantly they did so1 believing her delirious4 ,soon1 to their bewilderment and fright1 she walked into the adjoining room1 and they thought ,i had died1 and that it was my apparition1 she said4 ,,the ,,principle ,,of ,,divine ,,healing ,from that hour dated her conviction of the ,principle of divine healing1 and that it is as true to-day as it was in the days when ,jesus of ,nazareth walked the earth4 ,i felt that the divine ,spirit had wrought a miracle1 she said1 in reference to this experience4 ,how1 ,i could not tell1 but later ,i found it to be in perfect scientific accord with the divine law4 ,from #ahff-'fi ,mrs4 ,eddy withdrew from the world to meditate1 to pray1 to search the ,scriptures4 ,during this time1 she said1 in reply to my questions1 the ,bible was my only textbook4 ,it answered my questions as to the process by which ,i was restored to health2 it came to me with a new meaning1 and suddenly ,i apprehended the spiritual meaning of the teaching of ,jesus and the ,principle and the law involved in spiritual ,science and metaphysical healing--in a word--,christian ,science4 ,mrs4 ,eddy came to perceive that ,christ's healing was not miraculous1 but was simply a natural fulfilment of divine law--a law as operative in the world to-day as it was nineteen hundred years ago4 ,divine ,science is begotten of spirituality1 she says1 since only the 'pure in heart' can see ,god4 ,in writing of this experience1 ,mrs4 ,eddy has said3-- ,i had learned that thought must be spiritualized in order to apprehend ,spirit4 ,it must become honest1 unselfish1 and pure1 in order to have the least understanding of ,god in divine ,science4 ,the first must become last4 ,our reliance upon material things must be transferred to a perception of and dependence on spiritual things4 ,for ,spirit to be supreme in demonstration1 it must be supreme in our affections1 and we must be clad with divine power4 ,i had learned that ,mind reconstructed the body1 and that nothing else could4 ,all ,science is a revelation4 ,through homoeopathy1 too1 ,mrs4 ,eddy became convinced of the ,principle of ,mind-healing1 discovering that the more attenuated the drug1 the more potent was its effects4 ,in #ahgg ,mrs4 ,glover married ,dr4 ,asa ,gilbert ,eddy1 of ,londonderry1 ,vermont1 a physician who had come into sympathy with her own views1 and who was the first to place ,christian ,scientist on the sign at his door4 ,dr4 ,eddy died in #ahhb1 a year after her founding of the ,metaphysical ,college in ,boston1 in which he taught4 ,the work in the ,metaphysical ,college lasted nine years1 and it was closed 7in #ahhi7 in the very zenith of its prosperity1 as ,mrs4 ,eddy felt it essential to the deeper foundation of her religious work to retire from active contact with the world4 ,to this ,college came hundreds and hundreds of students1 from ,europe as well as this country4 ,i was present at the class lectures now and then1 by ,mrs4 ,eddy's kind invitation1 and such earnestness of attention as was given to her morning talks by the men and women present ,i never saw equalled4 ,,mrs4 ,,eddy',s ,,personality ,on the evening that ,i first met ,mrs4 ,eddy by her hospitable courtesy1 ,i went to her peculiarly fatigued4 ,i came away in a state of exhilaration and energy that made me feel ,i could have walked any conceivable distance4 ,i have met ,mrs4 ,eddy many times since then1 and always with this experience repeated4 ,several years ago ,mrs4 ,eddy removed from ,columbus to ,commonwealth ,avenue1 where1 just beyond ,massachusetts ,avenue1 at the entrance to the ,back ,bay ,park1 she bought one of the most beautiful residences in ,boston4 ,the interior is one of the utmost taste and luxury1 and the house is now occupied by ,judge and ,mrs4 ,hanna1 who are the editors of ,the ,christian ,science ,journal1 a monthly publication1 and to whose courtesy ,i am much indebted for some of the data of this paper4 ,it is a pleasure to give any information for ,the ,inter-,ocean1 remarked ,mrs4 ,hanna1 for it is the great daily that is so fair and so just in its attitude toward all questions4 ,the increasing demands of the public on ,mrs4 ,eddy have been1 it may be1 one factor in her removal to ,concord1 ,n4,h41 where she has a beautiful residence1 called ,pleasant ,view4 ,her health is excellent1 and although her hair is white1 she retains in a great degree her energy and power2 she takes a daily walk and drives in the afternoon4 ,she personally attends to a vast correspondence2 superintends the church in ,boston1 and is engaged on further writings on ,christian ,science4 ,in every sense she is the recognized head of the ,christian ,science ,church4 ,at the same time it is her most earnest aim to eliminate the element of personality from the faith4 ,on this point1 ,mrs4 ,eddy feels very strongly1 said a gentleman to me on ,christmas eve1 as ,i sat in the beautiful drawing-room1 where ,judge and ,mrs4 ,hanna1 ,miss ,elsie ,lincoln1 the soprano for the choir of the new church1 and one or two other friends were gathered4 ,mother feels very strongly1 he continued1 the danger and the misfortune of a church depending on any one personality4 ,it is difficult not to centre too closely around a highly gifted personality4 ,,the ,,first ,,association ,the first ,christian ,scientist ,association was organized on ,july #d1 #ahgf1 by seven persons1 including ,mrs4 ,eddy4 ,in ,april1 #ahgi1 the church was founded with twenty-six members1 and its charter obtained the following ,june4,c ,mrs4 ,eddy had preached in other parishes for five years before being ordained in this church1 which ceremony took place in #ahha4 ,the first edition of ,mrs4 ,eddy's book1 ,science and ,health1 was issued in #ahge4 ,during these succeeding twenty years it has been greatly revised and enlarged1 and it is now in its ninety-first edition4 ,it consists of fourteen chapters1 whose titles are as follows3 ,science1 ,theology1 ,medicine1 ,physiology1 ,footsteps of ,truth1 ,creation1 ,science of ,being1 ,christian ,science and ,spiritualism1 ,genesis1 ,apocalypse1 and ,glossary4 ,the ,christian ,scientists do not accept the belief we call spiritualism4 ,they believe those who have passed the change of death are in so entirely different a plane of consciousness that between the embodied and disembodied there is no possibility of communication4 ,they are diametrically opposed to the philosophy of ,karma and of reincarnation1 which are the tenets of theosophy4 ,they hold with strict fidelity to what they believe to be the literal teachings of ,christ4 ,yet each and all these movements1 however they may differ among themselves1 are phases of idealism and manifestations of a higher spirituality seeking expression4 ,it is good that each and all shall prosper1 serving those who find in one form of belief or another their best aid and guidance1 and that all meet on common ground in the great essentials of love to ,god and love to man as a signal proof of the divine origin of humanity which finds no rest until it finds the peace of the ,lord in spirituality4 ,they all teach that one great truth1 that ,god's greatness flows around our incompleteness1 ,round our restlessness1 ,his rest4 ,,elizabeth ,,barrett ,,browning4 99 99 of ,christian ,science1 ,rev4 ,mary ,baker ,eddy1 was yesterday dedicated to the worship of ,god4 ,the structure came forth from the hands of the artisans with every stone paid for--with an appeal1 not for more money1 but for a cessation of the tide of contributions which continued to flow in after the full amount needed was received4 ,from every ,state in the ,union1 and from many lands1 the love-offerings of the disciples of ,christian ,science came to help erect this beautiful structure1 and more than four thousand of these contributors came to ,boston1 from the far-off ,pacific coast and the ,gulf ,states and all the territory that lies between1 to view the new-built temple and to listen to the ,message sent them by the teacher they revere4 ,from all ,new ,england the members of the denomination gathered2 ,new ,york sent its hundreds1 and even from the distant ,states came parties of forty and fifty4 ,the large auditorium1 with its capacity for holding from fourteen hundred to fifteen hundred persons1 was hopelessly incapable of receiving this vast throng1 to say nothing of nearly a thousand local believers4 ,hence the service was repeated until all who wished had heard and seen2 and each of the four vast congregations filled the church to repletion4 ,at #g3cj a4m4 the chimes in the great stone tower1 which rises one hundred and twenty-six feet above the earth1 rung out their message of ,on earth peace1 good will toward men4 ,old familiar hymns--,all hail the power of ,jesus' name1 and others such--were chimed until the hour for the dedication service had come4 ,at #i a4m4 the first congregation gathered4 ,before this service had closed the large vestry room and the spacious lobbies and the sidewalks around the church were all filled with a waiting multitude4 ,at #aj3cj o'clock another service began1 and at noon still another4 ,then there was an intermission1 and at #c p4m4 the service was repeated for the last time4 ,there was scarcely even a minor variation in the exercises at any one of these services4 ,at #aj3cj a4m41 however1 the scene was rendered particularly interesting by the presence of several hundred children in the central pews4 ,these were the little contributors to the building fund1 whose money was devoted to the ,mother's ,room1 a superb apartment intended for the sole use of ,mrs4 ,eddy4 ,these children are known in the church as the ,busy ,bees1 and each of them wore a white satin badge with a golden beehive stamped upon it1 and beneath the beehive the words1 ,mother's ,room1 in gilt letters4 ,the pulpit end of the auditorium was rich with the adornment of flowers4 ,on the wall of the choir gallery above the platform1 where the organ is to be hereafter placed1 a huge seven-pointed star was hung--a star of lilies resting on palms1 with a centre of white immortelles1 upon which in letters of red were the words3 ,love-,children's ,offering--#ahid4 ,in the choir and the steps of the platform were potted palms and ferns and ,easter lilies4 ,the desk was wreathed with ferns and pure white roses fastened with a broad ribbon bow4 ,on its right was a large basket of white carnations resting on a mat of palms1 and on its left a vase filled with beautiful pink roses4 ,two combined choirs--that of ,first ,church of ,christ1 ,scientist1 of ,new ,york1 and the choir of the home church1 numbering thirty-five singers in all--led the singing1 under the direction1 respectively1 of ,mr4 ,henry ,lincoln ,case and ,miss ,elsie ,lincoln4 ,judge ,s4,j4 ,hanna1 editor of ,the ,christian ,science the ,christian ,science textbook4 ,the sermon prepared for the occasion by ,mrs4 ,eddy1 which was looked forward to as the chief feature of the dedication1 was then read by ,mrs4 ,bemis4 ,mrs4 ,eddy remained at her home in ,concord1 ,n4,h41 during the day1 because1 as heretofore stated in ,the ,herald1 it is her custom to discourage among her followers that sort of personal worship which religious teachers so often receive4 ,before presenting the sermon1 ,mrs4 ,bemis read the following letter from a former pastor of the church3-- ,to ,rev4 ,mary ,baker ,eddy4 ,dear ,teacher1 ,leader1 ,,woman ,,of ,,wealth ,,who ,,devotes ,,all ,,to ,,her ,,church ,,work ,christian ,science has shown its power over its students1 as they are called1 by building a church by voluntary contributions1 the first of its kind2 a church which will be dedicated to-day with a quarter of a million dollars expended and free of debt4 ,the money has flowed in from all parts of the ,united ,states and ,canada without any special appeal1 and it kept coming until the custodian of funds cried enough and refused to accept any further checks by mail or otherwise4 ,men1 women1 and children lent a helping hand1 some giving a mite and some substantial sums4 ,sacrifices were made in many an instance which will never be known in this world4 ,christian ,scientists not only say that they can effect cures of disease and erect churches1 but add that they can get their buildings finished on time1 even when the feat seems impossible to mortal senses4 ,read the following1 from a publication of the new denomination3-- ,one of the grandest and most helpful features of this glorious consummation is this3 that one month before the close of the year every evidence of material sense declared that the church's completion within the year #ahid transcended human possibility4 ,the predictions of workman and onlooker alike were that it could not be completed before ,april or ,may of #ahie4 ,much was the ridicule heaped upon the hopeful1 trustful ones1 who declared and repeatedly asseverated to the contrary4 ,this is indeed1 then1 a scientific demonstration4 ,it has proved1 in most striking manner1 the oft-repeated declarations of our textbooks1 that the evidence of the mortal senses is unreliable4 ,a week ago ,judge ,hanna withdrew from the pastorate of the church1 saying he gladly laid down his responsibilities to be succeeded by the grandest of ministers--the ,bible and ,science and ,health with ,key to the ,scriptures4 ,this action1 it appears1 was the result of rules made by ,mrs4 ,eddy4 ,the sermons hereafter will consist of passages read from the two books by ,readers1 who will be elected each year by the congregation4 ,a story has been abroad that ,judge ,hanna was so eloquent and magnetic that he was attracting listeners who came to hear him preach1 rather than in search of the truth as taught4 ,consequently the new rules were formulated4 ,but at ,christian ,science headquarters this is denied2 ,mrs4 ,eddy says the words of the judge speak to the point1 and that no such inference is to be drawn therefrom4 ,in ,mrs4 ,eddy's personal reminiscences1 which are published under the title of ,retrospection and ,introspection1 much is told of herself in detail that can only be touched upon in this brief sketch4 ,aristocratic to the backbone1 ,mrs4 ,eddy takes delight in going back to the ancestral tree and in tracing those branches which are identified with good and great names both in ,scotland and ,england4 ,her family came to this country not long before the ,revolution4 ,among the many souvenirs that ,mrs4 ,eddy remembers as belonging to her grandparents was a heavy sword1 encased in a brass scabbard1 upon which had been inscribed the name of the kinsman upon whom the sword had been bestowed by ,sir ,william ,wallace of mighty ,scottish fame4 ,mrs4 ,eddy applied herself1 like other girls1 to her studies1 though perhaps with an unusual zest1 delighting in philosophy1 logic1 and moral science1 as well as looking into the ancient languages1 ,hebrew1 ,greek1 and ,latin4 ,her last marriage was in the spring of #ahgg1 when1 at ,lynn1 ,mass41 she became the wife of ,asa ,gilbert ,eddy4 ,he was the first organizer of a ,christian ,science ,sunday ,school1 of which he was the superintendent1 and later he attracted the attention of many clergymen of other denominations by his able lectures upon ,scriptural topics4 ,he died in #ahhb4 ,mrs4 ,eddy is known to her circle of pupils and admirers as the editor and publisher of the first official organ of this sect4 ,it was called the ,journal of ,christian ,science1 and has had great circulation with the members of this fast-increasing faith4 ,in recounting her experiences as the pioneer of ,christian ,science1 she states that she sought knowledge concerning the physical side in this research through the different schools of allopathy1 homoeopathy1 and so forth1 without receiving any real satisfaction4 ,no ancient or modern philosophy gave her any distinct statement of the ,science of ,mind-healing4 ,she claims that no human reason has been equal to the question4 ,and she also defines carefully the difference in the theories between faith-cure and ,christian ,science1 dwelling particularly upon the terms belief and understanding1 which are the key words respectively used in the definitions of these two healing arts4 ,besides her ,boston home1 ,mrs4 ,eddy has a delightful country home one mile from the ,state ,house of ,new ,hampshire's quiet capital1 an easy driving distance for her when she wishes to catch a glimpse of the world4 ,but for the most part she lives very much retired1 driving rather into the country1 which is so picturesque all about ,concord and its surrounding villages4 ,the big house1 so delightfully remodelled and modernized from a primitive homestead that nothing is left excepting the angles and pitch of the roof1 is remarkably well placed upon a terrace that slopes behind the buildings1 while they themselves are in the midst of green stretches of lawns1 dotted with beds of flowering shrubs1 with here and there a fountain or summer-house4 ,mrs4 ,eddy took the writer straight to her beloved lookout--a broad piazza on the south side of the second story of the house1 where she can sit in her swinging chair1 revelling in the lights and shades of spring and summer greenness4 ,or1 as just then1 in the gorgeous ,october coloring of the whole landscape that lies below1 across the farm1 which stretches on through an intervale of beautiful meadows and pastures to the woods that skirt the valley of the little truant river1 as it wanders eastward4 ,it pleased her to point out her own birthplace4 ,straight as the crow flies1 from her piazza1 does it lie on the brow of ,bow hill1 and then she paused and reminded the reporter that ,congressman ,baker from ,new ,hampshire1 her cousin1 was born and bred in that same neighborhood4 ,the photograph of ,hon4 ,hoke ,smith1 another distinguished relative1 adorned the mantel4 ,then my eye caught her family coat of arms and the diploma given her by the ,society of the ,daughters of the ,revolution4 ,the natural and lawful pride that comes with a tincture of blue and brave blood1 is perhaps one of her characteristics1 as is many another well-born woman's4 ,she had a long list of worthy ancestors in ,colonial and ,revolutionary days1 and the ,mc,neils and ,general ,knox figure largely in her genealogy1 as well as the hero who killed the ill-starred ,paugus4 ,this big1 sunny room which ,mrs4 ,eddy calls her den--or sometimes ,mother's room1 when speaking of her many followers who consider her their spiritual ,leader--has the air of hospitality that marks its hostess herself4 ,mrs4 ,eddy has hung its walls with reproductions of some of ,europe's masterpieces1 a few of which had been the gifts of her loving pupils4 ,looking down from the windows upon the tree-tops on the lower terrace1 the reporter exclaimed3 ,you have lived here only four years1 and yet from a barren waste of most unpromising ground has come forth all this beauty6 ,four years6 she ejaculated2 two and a half1 only two and a half years4 ,then1 touching my sleeve and pointing1 she continued3 ,look at those big elms6 ,i had them brought here in warm weather1 almost as big as they are now1 and not one died4 ,mrs4 ,eddy talked earnestly of her friendships4444 ,she told something of her domestic arrangements1 of how she had long wished to get away from her busy career in ,boston1 and return to her native granite hills1 there to build a substantial home that should do honor to that precinct of ,concord4 ,she chose the stubbly old farm on the road from ,concord1 within one mile of the ,eton of ,america1 ,st4 ,paul's ,school4 ,once bought1 the will of the woman set at work1 and to-day a strikingly well-kept estate is the first impression given to the visitor as he approaches ,pleasant ,view4 ,she employs a number of men to keep the grounds and farm in perfect order1 and it was pleasing to learn that this rich woman is using her money to promote the welfare of industrious workmen1 in whom she takes a vital interest4 ,mrs4 ,eddy believes that the laborer is worthy of his hire1 and1 moreover1 that he deserves to have a home and family of his own4 ,indeed1 one of her motives in buying so large an estate was that she might do something for the toilers1 and thus add her influence toward the advancement of better home life and citizenship4 99 searching after religious truth4 ,there is really nothing settled4 ,every truth is more or less in a state of agitation4 ,the many who have worked in the mine of knowledge are glad to welcome others who have different methods1 and with them bring different ideas4 ,it is too early to predict where this movement will go1 and how greatly it will affect the well-established methods4 ,that it has produced a sensation in religious circles1 and called forth the implements of theological warfare1 is very well known4 ,while it has done this1 it may1 on the other hand1 have brought a benefit4 ,ere pagan times1 one bitter winter day1 a ,roman soldier parted his mantle with his sword and gave half of the garment to a naked beggar2 and so was memorialized in art and stone what was called the divine spirit of giving1 whose unbelieving exemplar afterward became a saint4 ,the ,boston church similarly expresses the faith of those who believe in what they term the divine art of healing1 which1 to their minds1 exists as much to-day as it did when ,christ healed the sick4 ,the first church organization of this faith was founded fifteen years ago with a membership of only twenty-six1 and since then the number of believers has grown with remarkable rapidity1 until now there are societies in every part of the country4 ,this growth1 it is said1 proceeds more from the graveyards than from conversions from other churches1 for most of those who embrace the faith claim to have been rescued from death miraculously under the injunction to heal the sick1 cleanse the lepers1 raise the dead1 cast out demons4 ,they hold with strict fidelity to what they conceive to be the literal teachings of the ,bible as expressed in its poetical and highly figurative language4 ,altogether the belief and so that no debt had to be taken care of on dedication day1 is a notable event4 ,while we are not1 and never have been1 devotees of ,christian ,science1 it becomes us as students of public questions not to ignore a movement which1 starting fifteen years ago1 has already gained to itself adherents in every part of the civilized world1 for it is a significant fact that one cannot take up a daily paper in town or village--to say nothing of cities--without seeing notices of ,christian ,science meetings1 and in most instances they are held at headquarters4 ,we believe there are two reasons for this remarkable development1 which has shown a vitality so unexpected4 ,the first is that a revolt was inevitable from the crass materialism of the cruder science that had taken possession of men's minds1 for as a wicked but witty writer has said1 ,if there were no ,god1 we should be obliged to invent one4 ,there is something in the constitution of man that requires the religious sentiment as much as his lungs call for breath2 indeed1 the breath of his soul is a belief in ,god4 ,but when ,christian ,science arose1 the thought of the world's scientific leaders had become materialistically lopsided1 and this condition can never long continue4 ,there must be a righting-up of the mind as surely as of a ship when under stress of storm it is ready to capsize4 ,the pendulum that has swung to one extreme will surely find the other4 ,the religious sentiment in women is so strong that the revolt was headed by them2 this was inevitable in the nature of the case4 ,it began in the most intellectual city of the freest country in the world--that is to say1 it sought the line of least resistance4 ,boston is emphatically the women's paradise1--numerically1 socially1 indeed every way4 ,here they have the largest individuality1 the most recognition1 the widest outlook4 ,mrs4 ,eddy we have never seen2 her book has many a time been sent us by interested friends1 and out of respect to them we have fairly broken our mental teeth over its granitic pebbles4 ,that we could not understand it might be rather to the credit of the book than otherwise4 ,on this subject we have no opinion to pronounce1 but simply state the fact4 ,we do not1 therefore1 speak of the system it sets forth1 either to praise or blame1 but this much is true3 the spirit of ,christian ,science ideas has caused an army of well-meaning people to believe in ,god and the power of faith1 who did not believe in them before4 ,it has made a myriad of women more thoughtful and devout2 it has brought a hopeful spirit into the homes of unnumbered invalids4 ,the belief that thoughts are things1 that the invisible is the only real world1 that we are here to be trained into harmony with the laws of ,god1 and that what we are here determines where we shall be hereafter--all these ideas are ,christian4 ,the chimes on the ,christian ,science temple in ,boston played ,all hail the power of ,jesus' name1 on the morning of the dedication4 ,we did not attend1 but we learn that the name of ,christ is nowhere spoken with more reverence than it was during those services1 and that he is set forth as the power of ,god for righteousness and the express image of ,god for love4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,new ,century1 ,boston1 ,february1 #ahie ,,one ,,point ,,of ,,view--,,the ,,new ,,woman ,we all know her--she is simply the woman of the past with an added grace--a newer charm4 ,some of her dearest ones call her selfish because she thinks so much of herself she spends her whole time helping others4 ,she represents the composite beauty1 sweetness1 and nobility of all those who scorn self for the sake of love and her handmaiden duty--of all those who seek the brightness of truth not as the moth to be destroyed thereby1 but as the lark who soars and sings to the great sun4 ,she is of those who have so much to give they want no time to take1 and their name is legion4 ,she is as full of beautiful possibilities as a perfect harp1 and she realizes that all the harmonies of the universe are in herself1 while her own soul plays upon magic strings the unwritten anthems of love4 ,she is the apostle of the true1 the beautiful1 the good1 commissioned to complete all that the twelve have left undone4 ,hers is the mission of missions--the highest of all--to make the body not the prison1 but the palace of the soul1 with the brain for its great white throne4 ,when she comes like the south wind into the cold haunts of sin and sorrow1 her words are smiles and her smiles are the sunlight which heals the stricken soul4 ,her hand is tender--but steel tempered with holy resolve1 and as one whom her love had glorified once said--she is soft and gentle1 but you could no more turn her from her course than winter could stop the coming of spring4 ,she has long learned with patience1 and to-day she knows many things dear to the soul far better than her teachers4 ,in olden times the ,jews claimed to be the conservators of the world's morals--they treated woman as a chattel1 and said that because she was created after man1 she was created solely for man4 ,too many still are ,jews who never called ,abraham ,father1 while the ,jews themselves have long acknowledged woman as man's proper helpmeet4 ,in those days women had few lawful claims and no one to urge them4 ,true1 there were ,miriam and ,esther1 but they sang and sacrificed for their people1 not for their sex4 ,to-day there are ten thousand ,esthers1 and ,miriams by the million1 who sing best by singing most for their own sex4 ,they are demanding the right to help make the laws1 or at least to help enforce the laws upon which depends the welfare of their husbands1 their children1 and themselves4 ,why should our selfish self longer remain deaf to their cry8 ,the date is no longer ,b4,c4 ,might no longer makes right1 and in this fair land at least fear has ceased to kiss the iron heel of wrong4 ,why then should we continue to demand woman's love and woman's help while we recklessly promise as lover and candidate what we never fulfil as husband and office-holder8 ,in our secret heart our better self is shamed and dishonored1 and appeals from ,philip drunk to ,philip sober1 but has not yet the moral strength and courage to prosecute the appeal4 ,but the east is rosy1 and the sunlight cannot long be delayed4 ,woman must not and will not be disheartened by a thousand denials or a million of broken pledges4 ,with the assurance of faith she prays1 with the certainty of inspiration she works1 and with the patience of genius she waits4 ,at last she is becoming as fair as the morn1 as bright as the sun1 and as terrible as an army with banners to those who march under the black flag of oppression and wield the ruthless sword of injustice4 ,in olden times it was the ,amazons who conquered the invincibles1 and we must look now to their daughters to overcome our own allied armies of evil and to save us from ourselves4 ,she must and will succeed1 for as ,david sang--,god shall help her1 and that right early4 ,when we try to praise her later works it is as if we would pour incense upon the rose4 ,it is the proudest boast of many of us that we are bound to her by bonds dearer than freedom1 and that we live in the reflected royalty which shines from her brow4 ,we rejoice with her that at last we begin to know what ,john on ,patmos meant--,and there appeared a great wonder in heaven1 a woman clothed with the sun1 and the moon under her feet1 and upon her head a crown of twelve stars4 ,she brought to warring men the ,prince of ,peace1 and he1 departing1 left his scepter not in her hand1 but in her soul4 ,the time of times is near when the new woman shall subdue the whole earth with the weapons of peace4 ,then shall wrong be robbed of her bitterness and ingratitude of her sting1 revenge shall clasp hands with pity1 and love shall dwell in the tents of hate2 while side by side1 equal partners in all that is worth living for1 shall stand the new man with the new woman4 99 99 99 99 99 ,christian ,science ,journal1 ,january1 #ahie ,extract ,,the ,,mother ,,church ,the ,mother ,church
