for the spiritual idea emanating from the infinite1 is a most needful work2 but this must be done gradually1 for ,truth is as the still1 small voice1 which comes to our recognition only as our natures are changed by its silent influence4 ,small streams are noisy and rush precipitately2 and babbling brooks fill the rivers till they rise in floods1 demolishing bridges and overwhelming cities4 ,so men1 when thrilled by a new idea1 are sometimes impatient2 and1 when public sentiment is aroused1 are liable to be borne on by the current of feeling4 ,they should then turn temporarily from the tumult1 for the silent cultivation of the true idea and the quiet practice of its virtues4 ,when the noise and stir of contending sentiments cease1 and the flames die away on the mount of revelation1 we can read more clearly the tablets of ,truth4 ,the theology and medicine of ,jesus were one1--in the divine oneness of the trinity1 ,life1 ,truth1 and ,love1 which healed the sick and cleansed the sinful4 ,this trinity in unity1 correcting the individual thought1 is the only ,mind-healing ,i vindicate2 and on its standard have emblazoned that crystallized expression1 ,,christian ,,science4 ,a spurious and hydra-headed mind-healing is naturally glared at by the pulpit1 ostracized by the medical faculty1 and scorned by people of common sense4 ,to aver that disease is normal1 a ,god-bestowed and stubborn reality1 but that you can heal it1 leaves you to work against that which is natural and a law of being4 ,it is scientific to rob disease of all reality2 and to accomplish this1 you cannot begin by admitting its reality4 ,our ,master taught his students to deny self1 sense1 and take up the cross4 ,mental healers who admit that disease is real should be made to test the feasibility of what they say by healing one case audibly1 through such an admission1--if this is possible4 ,i have healed more disease by the spoken than the unspoken word4 ,the honest student of ,christian ,science is modest in his claims and conscientious in duty1 waiting and working to mature what he has been taught4 ,institutes furnished with such teachers are becoming beacon-lights along the shores of erudition2 and many who are not teachers have large practices and some marked success in healing the most defiant forms of disease4 ,dishonesty destroys one's ability to heal mentally4 ,conceit cannot avert the effects of deceit4 ,taking advantage of the present ignorance in relation to ,christian ,science ,mind-healing1 many are flooding our land with conflicting theories and practice4 ,we should not spread abroad patchwork ideas that in some vital points lack ,science4 ,how sad it is that envy will bend its bow and shoot its arrow at the idea which claims only its inheritance1 is naturally modest1 generous1 and sincere6 while the trespassing error murders either friend or foe who stands in its way4 ,truly it is better to fall into the hands of ,god1 than of man4 ,when ,i revised ,science and ,health with ,key to the ,scriptures1 in #ahgh1 some irresponsible people insisted that my manual of the practice of ,christian ,science ,mind-healing should not be made public2 but ,i obeyed a diviner rule4 ,people dependent on the rules of this practice for their healing1 not having lost the ,spirit which sustains the genuine practice1 will put that book in the hands of their patients1 whom it will heal1 and recommend it to their students1 whom it would enlighten4 ,every teacher must pore over it in secret1 to keep himself well informed4 ,the ,nemesis of the history of ,mind-healing notes this hour4 ,dishonesty necessarily stultifies the spiritual sense which ,mind-healers specially need2 and which they must possess1 in order to be safe members of the community4 ,how good and pleasant a thing it is to seek not so much thine own as another's good1 to sow by the wayside for the way-weary1 and trust ,love's recompense of love4 ,plagiarism from my writings is so common it is becoming odious to honest people2 and such compilations1 instead of possessing the essentials of ,christian ,science1 are tempting and misleading4 ,reading ,science and ,health has restored the sick to health2 but the task of learning thoroughly the ,science of ,mind-healing and demonstrating it understandingly had better be undertaken in health than sickness4 ,,disease ,,unreal ,disease is more than imagination2 it is a human error1 a constituent part of what comprise the whole of mortal existence1--namely1 material sensation and mental delusion4 ,but an erring sense of existence1 or the error of belief1 named disease1 never made sickness a stubborn reality4 ,on the ground that harmony is the truth of being1 the ,science of ,mind-healing destroys the feasibility of disease2 hence error of thought becomes fable instead of fact4 ,science demonstrates the reality of ,truth and the unreality of the error4 ,a self-evident proposition1 in the ,science of ,mind-healing1 is that disease is unreal2 and the efficacy of my system1 beyond other systems of medicine1 vouches for the validity of that statement4 ,sin and disease are not scientific1 because they embody not the idea of divine ,principle1 and are not the phenomena of the immutable laws of ,god2 and they do not arise from the divine consciousness and true constituency of being4 ,the unreality of sin1 disease1 and death1 rests on the exclusive truth that being1 to be eternal1 must be harmonious4 ,all disease must be--and can only be--healed on this basis4 ,all true ,christian ,scientists are vindicating1 fearlessly and honestly1 the ,principle of this grand verity of ,mind-healing4 ,in erring mortal thought the reality of ,truth has an antipode1--the reality of error2 and disease is one of the severe realities of this error4 ,god has no opposite in ,science4 ,to ,truth there is no error4 ,as ,truth alone is real1 then it follows that to declare error real would be to make it ,truth4 ,disease arises from a false and material sense1 from the belief that matter has sensation4 ,therefore this material sense1 which is untrue1 is of necessity unreal4 ,moreover1 this unreal sense substitutes for ,truth an unreal belief1--namely1 that life and health are independent of ,god1 and dependent on material conditions4 ,material sense also avers that ,spirit1 or ,truth1 cannot restore health and perpetuate life1 but that material conditions can and do destroy both human health and life4 ,if disease is as real as health1 and is itself a state of being1 and yet is arrayed against being1 then ,mind1 or ,god1 does not meddle with it4 ,disease becomes indeed a stubborn reality1 and man is mortal4 ,a kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation2 therefore the mind that attacks a normal and real condition of man1 is profanely tampering with the realities of ,god and ,his laws4 ,metaphysical healing is a lost jewel in this misconception of reality4 ,any contradictory fusion of ,truth with error1 in both theory and practice1 prevents one from healing scientifically1 and makes the last state of one's patients worse than the first4 ,if disease is real it is not illusive1 and it certainly would contradict the ,science of ,mind-healing to attempt to destroy the realities of ,mind in order to heal the sick4 ,on the theory that ,god's formations are spiritual1 harmonious1 and eternal1 and that ,god is the only creator1 ,christian ,science refutes the validity of the testimony of the senses1 which take cognizance of their own phenomena1--sickness1 disease1 and death4 ,this refutation is indispensable to the destruction of false evidence1 and the consequent cure of the sick1--as all understand who practise the true ,science of ,mind-healing4 ,if1 as the error indicates1 the evidence of disease is not false1 then disease cannot be healed by denying its validity2 and this is why the mistaken healer is not successful1 trying to heal on a material basis4 ,the evidence that the earth is motionless and the sun revolves around our planet1 is as sensible and real as the evidence for disease2 but ,science determines the evidence in both cases to be unreal4 ,to material sense it is plain also that the error of the revolution of the sun around the earth is more apparent than the adverse but true ,science of the stellar universe4 ,copernicus has shown that what appears real1 to material sense and feeling1 is absolutely unreal4 ,astronomy1 optics1 acoustics1 and hydraulics are all at war with the testimony of the physical senses4 ,this fact intimates that the laws of ,science are mental1 not material2 and ,christian ,science demonstrates this4 ,,science ,,of ,,mind-,,healing ,the rule of divinity is golden2 to be wise and true rejoices every heart4 ,but evil influences waver the scales of justice and mercy4 ,no personal considerations should allow any root of bitterness to spring up between ,christian ,scientists1 nor cause any misapprehension as to the motives of others4 ,we must love our enemies1 and continue to do so unto the end4 ,by the love of ,god we can cancel error in our own hearts1 and blot it out of others4 ,sooner or later the eyes of sinful mortals must be opened to see every error they possess1 and the way out of it2 and they will flee as a bird to your mountain1 away from the enemy of sinning sense1 stubborn will1 and every imperfection in the land of ,sodom1 and find rescue and refuge in ,truth and ,love4 ,every loving sacrifice for the good of others is known to ,god1 and the wrath of man cannot hide it from ,him4 ,god has appointed for ,christian ,scientists high tasks1 and will not release them from the strict performance of each one of them4 ,the students must now fight their own battles4 ,i recommend that ,scientists draw no lines whatever between one person and another1 but think1 speak1 teach1 and write the truth of ,christian ,science without reference to right or wrong personality in this field of labor4 ,leave the distinctions of individual character and the discriminations and guidance thereof to the ,father1 whose wisdom is unerring and whose love is universal4 ,we should endeavor to be long-suffering1 faithful1 and charitable with all4 ,to this small effort let us add one more privilege--namely1 silence whenever it can substitute censure4 ,avoid voicing error2 but utter the truth of ,god and the beauty of holiness1 the joy of ,love and the peace of ,god1 that passeth all understanding1 recommending to all men fellowship in the bonds of ,christ4 ,advise students to rebuke each other always in love1 as ,i have rebuked them4 ,having discharged this duty1 counsel each other to work out his own salvation1 without fear or doubt1 knowing that ,god will make the wrath of man to praise ,him1 and that the remainder thereof ,he will restrain4 ,we can rejoice that every germ of goodness will at last struggle into freedom and greatness1 and every sin will so punish itself that it will bow down to the commandments of ,christ1--,truth and ,love4 ,i enjoin it upon my students to hold no controversy or enmity over doctrines and traditions1 or over the misconceptions of ,christian ,science1 but to work1 watch1 and pray for the amelioration of sin1 sickness1 and death4 ,if one be found who is too blind for instruction1 no longer cast your pearls before this state of mortal mind1 lest it turn and rend you2 but quietly1 with benediction and hope1 let the unwise pass by1 while you walk on in equanimity1 and with increased power1 patience1 and understanding1 gained from your forbearance4 ,this counsel is not new1 as my ,christian students can testify2 and if it had been heeded in times past it would have prevented1 to a great extent1 the factions which have sprung up among ,scientists to the hindrance of the ,cause of ,truth4 ,it is true that the mistakes1 prejudices1 and errors of one class of thinkers must not be introduced or established among another class who are clearer and more conscientious in their convictions2 but this one thing can be done1 and should be3 let your opponents alone1 and use no influence to prevent their legitimate action from their own standpoint of experience1 knowing1 as you should1 that ,god will well regenerate and separate wisely and finally2 whereas you may err in effort1 and lose your fruition4 ,hoping to pacify repeated complaints and murmurings against too great leniency1 on my part1 towards some of my students who fall into error1 ,i have opposed occasionally and strongly--especially in the first edition of this little work--existing wrongs of the nature referred to4 ,but ,i now point steadfastly to the power of grace to overcome evil with good4 ,god will furnish a table in the wilderness and show the power of ,love4 ,science is not the shibboleth of a sect or the cabalistic insignia of philosophy2 it excludes all error and includes all ,truth4 ,more mistakes are made in its name than this period comprehends4 ,divinely defined1 ,science is the atmosphere of ,god2 humanly construed1 and according to ,webster1 it is knowledge1 duly arranged and referred to general truths and principles on which it is founded1 and from which it is derived4 ,i employ this awe-filled word in both a divine and human sense2 but ,i insist that ,christian ,science is demonstrably as true1 relative to the unseen verities of being1 as any proof that can be given of the completeness of ,science4 ,the two largest words in the vocabulary of thought are ,christian and ,science4 ,the former is the highest style of man2 the latter reveals and interprets ,god and man2 it aggregates1 amplifies1 unfolds1 and expresses the ,,all-,god4 ,the life of ,christ is the predicate and postulate of all that ,i teach1 and there is but one standard statement1 one rule1 and one ,principle for all scientific truth4 ,my hygienic system rests on ,mind1 the eternal ,truth4 ,what is termed matter1 or relates to its so-called attributes1 is a self-destroying error4 ,when a so-called material sense is lost1 and ,truth restores that lost sense1--on the basis that all consciousness is ,mind and eternal1--the former position1 that sense is organic and material1 is proven erroneous4 ,the feasibility and immobility of ,christian ,science unveil the true idea1--namely1 that earth's discords have not the reality of ,mind in the ,science of being2 and this idea--dematerializing and spiritualizing mortals--turns like the needle to the pole all hope and faith to ,god1 based as it is on ,his omnipotence and omnipresence4 ,eternal harmony1 perpetuity1 and perfection1 constitute the phenomena of being1 governed by the immutable and eternal laws of ,god2 whereas matter and human will1 intellect1 desire1 and fear1 are not the creators1 controllers1 nor destroyers of life or its harmonies4 ,man has an immortal ,soul1 a divine ,principle1 and an eternal being4 ,man has perpetual individuality2 and ,god's laws1 and their intelligent and harmonious action1 constitute his individuality in the ,science of ,soul4 ,in its literary expression1 my system of ,christian metaphysics is hampered by material terms1 which must be used to indicate thoughts that are to be understood metaphysically4 ,as a ,science1 this system is held back by the common ignorance of what it is and what it does1 and 7worse still7 by those who come falsely in its name4 ,to be appreciated1 ,science must be understood and conscientiously introduced4 ,if the ,bible and ,science and ,health had the place in schools of learning that physiology occupies1 they would revolutionize and reform the world1 through the power of ,christ4 ,it is true that it requires more study to understand and demonstrate what these works teach1 than to learn theology1 physiology1 or physics2 because they teach divine ,science1 with fixed ,principle1 given rule1 and unmistakable proof4 ,ancient and modern human philosophy are inadequate to grasp the ,principle of ,christian ,science1 or to demonstrate it4 ,revelation shows this ,principle1 and will rescue reason from the thrall of error4 ,revelation must subdue the sophistry of intellect1 and spiritualize consciousness with the dictum and the demonstration of ,truth and ,love4 ,christian ,science ,mind-healing can only be gained by working from a purely ,christian standpoint4 ,then it heals the sick and exalts the race4 ,the essence of this ,science is right thinking and right acting--leading us to see spirituality and to be spiritual1 to understand and to demonstrate ,god4 ,the ,massachusetts ,metaphysical ,college and ,church of ,christ1 ,scientist1 in ,boston1 were the outgrowth of the author's religious experience4 ,after a lifetime of orthodoxy on the platform of doctrines1 rites1 and ceremonies1 it became a sacred duty for her to impart to others this new-old knowledge of ,god4 ,the same affection1 desire1 and motives which have stimulated true ,christianity in all ages1 and given impulse to goodness1 in or out of the ,church1 have nerved her purpose to build on the new-born conception of the ,christ1 as ,jesus declared himself1--namely1 the way1 the truth1 and the life4 ,living a true life1 casting out evil1 healing the sick1 and preaching the gospel of ,truth1--these are the ends of ,christianity4 ,this divine way impels a spiritualization of thought and method1 beyond doctrine and ritual2 and in nothing else has she departed from the old landmarks4 ,the unveiled spiritual signification of the ,word so enlarges our sense of ,god that it makes both sense and ,soul1 man and ,life1 immaterial1 though still individual4 ,it removes all limits from divine power4 ,god must be found all instead of a part of being1 and man the reflection of ,his power and goodness4 ,this ,science rebukes sin with its own nothingness1 and thus destroys sin quickly and utterly4 ,it makes disease unreal1 and this heals it4 ,the demonstration of moral and physical growth1 and a scientific deduction from the ,principle of all harmony1 declare both the ,principle and idea to be divine4 ,if this be true1 then death must be swallowed up in ,life1 and the prophecy of ,jesus fulfilled1 ,whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die4 ,though centuries passed after those words were originally uttered1 before this reappearing of ,truth1 and though the hiatus be longer still before that saying is demonstrated in ,life that knows no death1 the declaration is nevertheless true1 and remains a clear and profound deduction from ,christian ,science4 ,,is ,,christian ,,science ,,of ,,the ,,same ,,lineage ,,as ,,spiritualism ,,or ,,theosophy8 ,science is not susceptible of being held as a mere theory4 ,it is hoary with time4 ,it takes hold of eternity1 voices the infinite1 and governs the universe4 ,no greater opposites can be conceived of1 physically1 morally1 and spiritually1 than ,christian ,science1 spiritualism1 and theosophy4 ,science and ,health has effected a revolution in the minds of thinkers on the subject of mediumship1 and given impulse to reason and revelation1 goodness and virtue4 ,a theory may be sound in spots1 and sparkle like a diamond1 while other parts of it have no lustre4 ,christian ,science is sound in every part4 ,it is neither warped nor misconceived1 when properly demonstrated4 ,if a spiritualist medium understood the ,science of ,mind-healing1 he would know that between those who have and those who have not passed the transition called death1 there can be no interchange of consciousness1 and that all sensible phenomena are merely subjective states of mortal mind4 ,theosophy is a corruption of ,judaism4 ,this corruption had a renewal in the ,neoplatonic philosophy2 but it sprang from the ,oriental philosophy of ,brahmanism1 and blends with its magic and enchantments4 ,theosophy is no more allied to ,christian ,science than the odor of the upas-tree is to the sweet breath of springtide1 or the brilliant coruscations of the northern sky are to solar heat and light4 ,,is ,,christian ,,science ,,from ,,beneath1 ,,and ,,not ,,from ,,above8 ,hear the words of our ,master3 ,go ye into all the world6 ,heal the sick1 cast out devils6 ,christian ,scientists1 perhaps more than any other religious sect1 are obeying these commands2 and the injunctions are not confined to ,jesus' students in that age1 but they extend to this age1--to as many as shall believe on him4 ,the demand and example of ,jesus were not from beneath4 ,are frozen dogmas1 persistent persecution1 and the doctrine of eternal damnation1 from above8 ,are the dews of divine ,truth1 falling on the sick and sinner1 to heal them1 from beneath8 ,by their fruits ye shall know them4 ,reading my books1 without prejudice1 would convince all that their purpose is right4 ,the comprehension of my teachings would enable any one to prove these books to be filled with blessings for the whole human family4 ,fatiguing ,bible translations and voluminous commentaries are employed to explain and prop old creeds1 and they have the civil and religious arms in their defense2 then why should not these be equally extended to support the ,christianity that heals the sick8 ,the notions of personality to be found in creeds are far more mystic than ,mind-healing4 ,it is no easy matter to believe there are three persons in one person1 and that one person is cast out of another person4 ,these conceptions of ,deity and devil presuppose an impotent ,god and an incredible ,satan4 ,,is ,,christian ,,science ,,pantheistic8 ,christian ,science refutes pantheism1 finds ,spirit neither in matter nor in the modes of mortal mind4 ,it shows that matter and mortal mind have neither origin nor existence in the eternal ,mind4 ,thinking otherwise is what estranges mortals from divine ,life and ,love4 ,god is ,all-in-all4 ,he is ,spirit2 and in nothing is ,he unlike ,himself4 ,nothing that worketh or maketh a lie is to be found in the divine consciousness4 ,for ,god to know1 is to be2 that is1 what ,he knows must truly and eternally exist4 ,if ,he knows matter1 and matter can exist in ,mind1 then mortality and discord must be eternal4 ,he is ,mind2 and whatever ,he knows is made manifest1 and must be ,truth4 ,if ,god knows evil even as a false claim1 this knowledge would manifest evil in ,him and proceeding from ,him4 ,christian ,science shows that matter1 evil1 sin1 sickness1 and death are but negations of ,spirit1 ,truth1 and ,life1 which are positives that cannot be gainsaid4 ,the subjective states of evil1 called mortal mind or matter1 are negatives destitute of time and space2 for there is none beside ,god or ,spirit and the idea of ,spirit4 ,this infinite logic is the infinite light1--uncomprehended1 yet forever giving forth more light1 because it has no darkness to emit4 ,mortals do not understand the ,all2 hence their inference of some other existence beside ,god and ,his true likeness1--of something unlike ,him4 ,he who is ,all1 understands all4 ,he can have no knowledge or inference but ,his own consciousness1 and can take in no more than all4 ,the mists of matter--sin1 sickness1 and death--disappear in proportion as mortals approach ,spirit1 which is the reality of being4 ,it is not enough to say that matter is the substratum of evil1 and that its highest attenuation is mortal mind2 for there is1 strictly speaking1 no mortal mind4 ,mind is immortal4 ,death is the consequent of an antecedent false assumption of the realness of something unreal1 material1 and mortal4 ,if ,god knows the antecedent1 ,he must produce its consequences4 ,from this logic there is no escape4 ,matter1 or evil1 is the absence of ,spirit or good4 ,their nothingness is thus proven2 for ,god is good1 ever-present1 and ,all4 ,in ,him we live1 and move1 and have our being2 consequently it is impossible for the true man--who is a spiritual and individual being1 created in the eternal ,science of being--to be conscious of aught but good4 ,god's image and likeness can never be less than a good man2 and for man to be more than ,god's likeness is impossible4 ,man is the climax of creation2 and ,god is not without an ever-present witness1 testifying of ,himself4 ,matter1 or any mode of mortal mind1 is neither part nor parcel of divine consciousness and ,god's verity4 ,in ,science there is no fallen state of being2 for therein is no inverted image of ,god1 no escape from the focal radiation of the infinite4 ,hence the unreality of error1 and the truth of the ,scripture1 that there is none beside ,him4 ,if mortals could grasp these two words all and nothing1 this mystery of a ,god who has no knowledge of sin would disappear1 and the eternal1 infinite harmony would be fathomed4 ,if ,god could know a false claim1 false knowledge would be a part of ,his consciousness4 ,then evil would be as real as good1 sickness as real as health1 death as real as ,life2 and sickness1 sin1 and death would be as eternal as ,god4 ,,is ,,christian ,,science ,,blasphemous8 ,blasphemy has never diminished sin and sickness1 nor acknowledged ,god in all ,his ways4 ,blasphemy rebukes not the godless lie that denies ,him as ,all-in-all1 nor does it ascribe to ,him all presence1 power1 and glory4 ,christian ,science does this4 ,if ,science lacked the proof of its origin in ,god1 it would be self-destructive1 for it rests alone on the demonstration of ,god's supremacy and omnipotence4 ,right thinking and right acting1 physical and moral harmony1 come with ,science1 and the secret of its presence lies in the universal need of better health and morals4 ,human theories1 when weighed in the balance1 are found unequal to the demonstration of divine ,life and ,love2 and their highest endeavors are1 to divine ,science1 what a child's love of pictures is to art4 ,a child1 in his ignorance1 may imagine the face of ,dante to be the rapt face of ,jesus4 ,thus falsely may the human conceive of the ,divine4 ,if the schoolmaster is not ,christ1 the school gets things wrong1 and knows it not2 but the teacher is morally responsible4 ,good health and a more spiritual religion are the common wants2 and these wants have wrought this moral result1--that the so-called mortal mind asks for what ,mind alone can supply4 ,this demand militates against the so-called demands of matter1 and regulates the present high premium on ,mind-healing4 ,if the uniform moral and spiritual1 as well as physical1 effects of ,christian ,science were lacking1 the premium would go down4 ,that it continues to rise1 and the demand to increase1 shows its real value to the race4 ,even doctors will agree that infidelity1 ignorance1 and quackery have never met the growing wants of humanity4 ,christian ,science is no ,boston craze2 it is the sober second thought of advancing humanity4 ,,is ,,there ,a ,,personal ,,deity8 ,god is infinite4 ,he is neither a limited mind nor a limited body4 ,god is ,love2 and ,love is ,principle1 not person4 ,what the person of the infinite is1 we know not2 but we are gratefully and lovingly conscious of the fatherliness of this ,supreme ,being4 ,god is individual1 and man is ,his individualized idea4 ,while material man and the physical senses receive no spiritual idea1 and feel no sensation of divine ,love1 spiritual man and his spiritual senses are drinking in the nature and essence of the individual infinite4 ,a sinful sense is incompetent to understand the realities of being1--that ,life is ,god1 and that man is in ,his image and likeness4 ,a sinner can take no cognizance of the noumenon or the phenomena of ,spirit2 but leaving sin1 sense rises to the fulness of the stature of man in ,christ4 ,person is formed after the manner of mortal man1 so far as he can conceive of personality4 ,limitless personality is inconceivable4 ,his person and perfection are neither self-created1 nor discerned through imperfection2 and of ,god as a person1 human reason1 imagination1 and revelation give us no knowledge4 ,error would fashion ,deity in a manlike mould1 while ,truth is moulding a ,godlike man4 ,when the term divine ,principle is used to signify ,deity it may seem distant or cold1 until better apprehended4 ,this ,principle is ,mind1 substance1 ,life1 ,truth1 ,love4 ,when understood1 ,principle is found to be the only term that fully conveys the ideas of ,god1--one ,mind1 a perfect man1 and divine ,science4 ,as the divine ,principle is comprehended1 ,god's omnipotence and omnipresence will dawn on mortals1 and the notion of an everywhere-present body--or of an infinite ,mind starting from a finite body1 and returning to it--will disappear4 ,ever-present ,love must seem ever absent to ever-present selfishness or material sense4 ,hence this asking amiss and receiving not1 and the common idolatry of man-worship4 ,in divine ,science1 ,god is recognized as the only power1 presence1 and glory4 ,adam's mistiness and ,satan's reasoning1 ever since the flood1--when specimens of every kind emerged from the ark1--have run through the veins of all human philosophy4 ,human reason is a blind guide1 a continued series of mortal hypotheses1 antagonistic to ,revelation and ,science4 ,it is continually straying into forbidden by-paths of sensualism1 contrary to the life and teachings of ,jesus and ,paul1 and the vision of the ,apocalypse4 ,human philosophy has ninety-nine parts of error to the one-hundredth part of ,truth1--an unsafe decoction for the race4 ,the ,science that ,jesus demonstrated1 whose views of ,truth ,confucius and ,plato but dimly discerned1 ,science and ,health interprets4 ,it was not a search after wisdom2 it was wisdom1 and it grasped in spiritual law the universe1--all time1 space1 immortality1 thought1 extension4 ,this ,science demonstrated the ,principle of all phenomena1 identity1 individuality1 law2 and showed man as reflecting ,god and the divine capacity4 ,human philosophy would dethrone perfection1 and substitute matter and evil for divine means and ends4 ,human philosophy has an undeveloped ,god1 who unfolds ,himself through material modes1 wherein the human and divine mingle in the same realm and consciousness4 ,this is rank infidelity2 because by it we lose ,god's ways and perpetuate the supposed power and reality of evil ad infinitum4 ,christian ,science rends this veil in the pantheon of many gods1 and reproduces the teachings of ,jesus1 whose philosophy is incontestable1 bears the strain of time1 and brings in the glories of eternity2 for other foundation can no man lay than that is laid1 which is ,jesus ,christ4 ,divine philosophy is demonstrably the true idea of the ,christ1 wherein ,principle heals and saves4 ,a philosophy which cannot heal the sick has little resemblance to ,science1 and is1 to say the least1 like a cloud without rain1 driven about by every wind of doctrine4 ,such philosophy has certainly not touched the hem of the ,christ garment4 ,leibnitz1 ,descartes1 ,fichte1 ,hegel1 ,spinoza1 ,bishop ,berkeley1 were once clothed with a brief authority2 but ,berkeley ended his metaphysical theory with a treatise on the healing properties of tar-water1 and ,hegel was an inveterate snuff-taker4 ,the circumlocution and cold categories of ,kant fail to improve the conditions of mortals1 morally1 spiritually1 or physically4 ,such miscalled metaphysical systems are reeds shaken by the wind4 ,compared with the inspired wisdom and infinite meaning of the ,word of ,truth1 they are as moonbeams to the sun1 or as ,stygian night to the kindling dawn4 ,,is ,,there ,a ,,personal ,,devil8 ,no man hath seen the person of good or of evil4 ,each is greater than the corporeality we behold4 ,he cast out devils4 ,this record shows that the term devil is generic1 being used in the plural number4 ,from this it follows that there is more than one devil4 ,that ,jesus cast several persons out of another person1 is not stated1 and is impossible4 ,hence the passage must refer to the evils which were cast out4 ,jesus defined devil as a mortal who is full of evil4 ,have ,i not chosen you twelve1 and one of you is a devil8 ,his definition of evil indicated his ability to cast it out4 ,an incorrect concept of the nature of evil hinders the destruction of evil4 ,to conceive of ,god as resembling--in personality1 or form--the personality that ,jesus condemned as devilish1 is fraught with spiritual danger4 ,evil can neither grasp the prerogative of ,god nor make evil omnipotent and omnipresent4 ,jesus said to ,peter1 ,get thee behind me1 ,satan2 but he to whom our ,lord gave the keys of the kingdom could not have been wholly evil1 and therefore was not a devil1 after the accepted definition4 ,out of the ,magdalen1 ,jesus cast seven devils2 but not one person was named among them4 ,according to ,crabtre1 these devils were the diseases ,jesus cast out4 ,the most eminent divines1 in ,europe and ,america1 concede that the ,scriptures have both a literal and a moral meaning4 ,which of the two is the more important to gain1--the literal or the moral sense of the word devil1--in order to cast out this devil8 ,evil is a quality1 not an individual4 ,as mortals1 we need to discern the claims of evil1 and to fight these claims1 not as realities1 but as illusions2 but ,deity can have no such warfare against ,himself4 ,knowledge of a man's physical personality is not sufficient to inform us as to the amount of good or evil he possesses4 ,hence we cannot understand ,god or man1 through the person of either4 ,god is ,all-in-all2 but ,he is definite and individual1 the omnipresent and omniscient ,mind2 and man's individuality is ,god's own image and likeness1--even the immeasurable idea of divine ,mind4 ,in the ,science of good1 evil loses all place1 person1 and power4 ,according to ,spinoza's philosophy ,god is amplification4 ,he is in all things1 and therefore ,he is in evil in human thought4 ,he is extension1 of whatever character4 ,also1 according to ,spinoza1 man is an animal vegetable1 developed through the lower orders of matter and mortal mind4 ,all these vagaries are at variance with my system of metaphysics1 which rests on ,god as ,one and ,all1 and denies the actual existence of both matter and evil4 ,according to false philosophy and scholastic theology1 ,god is three persons in one person4 ,by the same token1 evil is not only as real as good1 but much more real1 since evil subordinates good in personality4 ,the claims of evil become both less and more in ,christian ,science1 than in human philosophies or creeds3 more1 because the evil that is hidden by dogma and human reason is uncovered by ,science2 and less1 because evil1 being thus uncovered1 is found out1 and exposure is nine points of destruction4 ,then appears the grand verity of ,christian ,science3 namely1 that evil has no claims and was never a claimant2 for behold evil 7or devil7 is1 as ,jesus said1 a murderer from the beginning1 and the truth abode not in him4 ,there was never a moment in which evil was real4 ,this great fact concerning all error brings with it another and more glorious truth1 that good is supreme4 ,as there is none beside ,him1 and ,he is all good1 there can be no evil4 ,simply uttering this great thought is not enough6 ,we must live it1 until ,god becomes the ,all and ,only of our being4 ,having won through great tribulation this cardinal point of divine ,science1 ,st4 ,paul said1 ,but now we are delivered from the law1 that being dead wherein we were held2 that we should serve in newness of spirit1 and not in the oldness of the letter4 ,,is ,,man ,a ,,person8 ,man is more than physical personality1 or what we cognize through the material senses4 ,mind is more than matter1 even as the infinite idea of ,truth is beyond a finite belief4 ,man outlives finite mortal definitions of himself1 according to a law of the survival of the fittest4 ,man is the eternal idea of his divine ,principle1 or ,father4 ,he is neither matter nor a mode of mortal mind1 for he is spiritual and eternal1 an immortal mode of the divine ,mind4 ,man is the image and likeness of ,god1 coexistent and coeternal with ,him4 ,man is not absorbed in ,deity2 for he is forever individual2 but what this everlasting individuality is1 remains to be learned4 ,mortals have not seen it4 ,that which is born of the flesh is not man's eternal identity4 ,spiritual and immortal man alone is ,god's likeness1 and that which is mortal is not man in a spiritually scientific sense4 ,a material1 sinful mortal is but the counterfeit of immortal man4 ,the mind-quacks believe that mortal man is identical with immortal man1 and that the immortal is inside the mortal2 that good and evil blend2 that matter and ,spirit are one2 and that ,soul1 or ,spirit1 is subdivided into spirits1 or souls1--alias gods4 ,this infantile talk about ,mind-healing is no more identical with ,christian ,science than the babe is identical with the adult1 or the human belief resembles the divine idea4 ,hence it is impossible for those holding such material and mortal views to demonstrate my metaphysics4 ,theirs is the sensuous thought1 which brings forth its own sensuous conception4 ,mine is the spiritual idea which transfigures thought4 ,all real being represents ,god1 and is in ,him4 ,in this ,science of being1 man can no more relapse or collapse from perfection1 than his divine ,principle1 or ,father1 can fall out of ,himself into something below infinitude4 ,man's real ego1 or selfhood1 is goodness4 ,if man's individuality were evil1 he would be annihilated1 for evil is self-destroying4 ,man's individual being must reflect the supreme individual ,being1 to be ,his image and likeness2 and this individuality never originated in molecule1 corpuscle1 materiality1 or mortality4 ,god holds man in the eternal bonds of ,science1--in the immutable harmony of divine law4 ,man is a celestial2 and in the spiritual universe he is forever individual and forever harmonious4 ,if ,god so clothe the grass of the field1 444 shall ,he not much more clothe you1 ,o ye of little faith8 ,sin must be obsolete1--dust returning to dust1 nothingness to nothingness4 ,sin is not ,mind2 it is but the supposition that there is more than one ,mind4 ,it issues a false claim2 and the claim1 being worthless1 is in reality no claim whatever4 ,matter is not ,mind1 to claim aught2 but ,mind is ,god1 and evil finds no place in good4 ,when we get near enough to ,god to see this1 the springtide of ,truth in ,christian ,science will burst upon us in the similitude of the ,apocalyptic pictures4 ,no night will be there1 and there will be no more sea4 ,there will be no need of the sun1 for ,spirit will be the light of the city1 and matter will be proved a myth4 ,until centuries pass1 and this vision of ,truth is fully interpreted by divine ,science1 this prophecy will be scoffed at2 but it is just as veritable now as it can be then4 ,science1 divine ,science1 presents the grand and eternal verities of ,god and man as the divine ,mind and that ,mind's idea4 ,mortal man is the antipode of immortal man1 and the two should not be confounded4 ,bishop ,foster said1 in a lecture in ,boston1 ,no man living hath yet seen man4 ,this material sinful personality1 which we misname man1 is what ,st4 ,paul terms the old man and his deeds1 to be put off4 ,who can say what the absolute personality of ,god or man is8 ,who living hath seen ,god or a perfect man8 ,in presence of such thoughts take off thy shoes and tread lightly1 for this is holy ground4 ,surely the probation of mortals must go on after the change called death1 that they may learn the definition of immortal being2 or else their present mistakes would extinguish human existence4 ,how long this false sense remains after the transition called death1 no mortal knoweth2 but this is sure1 that the mists of error1 sooner or later1 will melt in the fervent heat of suffering1 mortality will burst the barriers of sense1 and man be found perfect and eternal4 ,of his intermediate conditions--the purifying processes and terrible revolutions necessary to effect this end--,i am ignorant4 ,inasmuch as these momentous facts in the ,science of being must be learned some time1 now is the most acceptable time for beginning the lesson4 ,if ,science is pointing the way1 and is found to bring with it health1 holiness1 and immortality1 then to-day is none too soon for entering this path4 ,the proof that ,christian ,science is the way of salvation given by ,christ1 ,i consider well established4 ,the present1 as well as the future1 reveals the fact that ,truth is never understood too soon4 ,has ,truth1 as demonstrated by ,jesus1 reappeared8 ,study ,christian ,science and practise it1 and you will know that ,truth has reappeared4 ,what is demonstrably true cannot be gainsaid2 but getting the letter and omitting the spirit of this ,science is neither the comprehension of its ,principle nor the practice of its ,life4 ,,has ,,man ,a ,,soul8 ,the ,scriptures inform us that the soul that sinneth1 it shall die4 ,here soul means sense and organic life2 and this passage refers to the ,jewish law1 that a mortal should be put to death for his own sin1 but not for another's4 ,not ,soul1 but mortal sense1 sins and dies4 ,immortal man has immortal ,soul and a deathless sense of being4 ,mortal man has but a false sense of ,soul and body4 ,he believes that ,spirit1 or ,soul1 exists in matter4 ,this is pantheism1 and is not the ,science of ,soul4 ,the mind-quacks have so slight a knowledge of ,soul that they believe material and sinning sense to be soul2 and then they doctor this soul as if it were not even a material sense4 ,in ,dr4 ,gordon's sermon on ,the ,ministry of ,healing1 he said1 ,the forgiven soul in a sick body is not half a man4 ,is this pantheistic statement sound theology1--that ,soul is in matter1 and the immortal part of man a sinner8 ,is not this a disparagement of the person of man and a denial of ,god's power8 ,better far that we impute such doctrines to mortal opinion than to the divine ,word4 ,to my sense1 such a statement is a shocking reflection on the divine power4 ,a mortal pardoned by ,god is not sick1 he is made whole4 ,he in whom sin1 disease1 and death are destroyed1 is more than a fraction of himself4 ,such sermons1 though clad in soft raiment1 are spiritless waifs1 literary driftwood on the ocean of thought2 while ,truth walks triumphantly over the waves of sin1 sickness1 and death4 ,the law of ,life and ,truth is the law of ,christ1 destroying all sense of sin and death4 ,it does more than forgive the false sense named sin1 for it pursues and punishes it1 and will not let sin go until it is destroyed1--until nothing is left to be forgiven1 to suffer1 or to be punished4 ,forgiven thus1 sickness and sin have no relapse4 ,god's law reaches and destroys evil by virtue of the allness of ,god4 ,he need not know the evil ,he destroys1 any more than the legislator need know the criminal who is punished by the law enacted4 ,god's law is in three words1 ,i am ,all2 and this perfect law is ever present to rebuke any claim of another law4 ,god pities our woes with the love of a ,father for ,his child1--not by becoming human1 and knowing sin1 or naught1 but by removing our knowledge of what is not4 ,he could not destroy our woes totally if ,he possessed any knowledge of them4 ,his sympathy is divine1 not human4 ,it is ,truth's knowledge of its own infinitude which forbids the genuine existence of even a claim to error4 ,this knowledge is light wherein there is no darkness1--not light holding darkness within itself4 ,the consciousness of light is like the eternal law of ,god1 revealing ,him and nothing else4 ,sympathy with sin1 sorrow1 and sickness would dethrone ,god as ,truth1 for ,truth has no sympathy for error4 ,in ,science1 the cure of the sick demonstrates this grand verity of ,christian ,science1 that you cannot eradicate disease if you admit that ,god sends it or sees it4 ,material and mortal mind-healing 7so-called7 has for ages been a pretender1 but has not healed mortals2 and they are yet sick and sinful4 ,disease and sin appear to-day in subtler forms than they did yesterday4 ,they progress and will multiply into worse forms1 until it is understood that disease and sin are unreal1 unknown to ,truth1 and never actual persons or real facts4 ,our phraseology varies4 ,to me divine pardon is that divine presence which is the sure destruction of sin2 and ,i insist on the destruction of sin as the only full proof of its pardon4 ,for this purpose the ,son of ,god was manifested1 that he might destroy the works of the devil 7#a ,john iii4 #h74 ,jesus cast out evils1 mediating between what is and is not1 until a perfect consciousness is attained4 ,he healed disease as he healed sin2 but he treated them both1 not as in or of matter1 but as mortal beliefs to be exterminated4 ,physical and mental healing were one and the same with this master ,metaphysician4 ,if the evils called sin1 sickness1 and death had been forgiven in the generally accepted sense1 they would have returned1 to be again forgiven2 but ,jesus said to disease3 ,come out of him1 and enter no more into him4 ,he said also3 ,if a man keep my saying1 he shall never see death2 and ,whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven4 ,the misinterpretation of such passages has retarded the progress of ,christianity and the spiritualization of the race4 ,a magistrate's pardon may encourage a criminal to repeat the offense2 because forgiveness1 in the popular sense of the word1 can neither extinguish a crime nor the motives leading to it4 ,the belief in sin--its pleasure1 pain1 or power--must suffer1 until it is self-destroyed4 ,whatsoever a man soweth1 that shall he also reap4 ,,is ,,there ,,any ,,such ,,thing ,,as ,,sin8 ,frequently when ,i touch this subject my meaning is ignorantly or maliciously misconstrued4 ,christian ,science ,mind-healing lifts with a steady arm1 and cleaves sin with a broad battle-axe4 ,it gives the lie to sin1 in the spirit of ,truth2 but other theories make sin true4 ,jesus declared that the devil was a liar1 and the father of it4 ,a lie is negation1--alias nothing1 or the opposite of something4 ,good is great and real4 ,hence its opposite1 named evil1 must be small and unreal4 ,when this sense is attained1 we shall no longer be the servants of sin1 and shall cease to love it4 ,the domination of good destroys the sense of evil4 ,to illustrate3 ,it seems a great evil to belie and belittle ,christian ,science1 and persecute a ,cause which is healing its thousands and rapidly diminishing the percentage of sin4 ,but reduce this evil to its lowest terms1 nothing1 and slander loses its power to harm2 for even the wrath of man shall praise ,him4 ,the reduction of evil1 in ,science1 gives the dominance to ,god1 and must lead us to bless those who curse1 that thus we may overcome evil with good4 ,if the ,bible and my work ,science and ,health had their rightful place in schools of learning1 they would revolutionize the world by advancing the kingdom of ,christ4 ,it requires sacrifice1 struggle1 prayer1 and watchfulness to understand and demonstrate what these volumes teach1 because they involve divine ,science1 with fixed ,principle1 a given rule1 and unmistakable proof4 ,,is ,,there ,,no ,,sacrificial ,,atonement8 ,self-sacrifice is the highway to heaven4 ,the sacrifice of our blessed ,lord is undeniable1 and it was a million times greater than the brief agony of the cross2 for that would have been insufficient to insure the glory his sacrifice brought and the good it wrought4 ,the spilling of human blood was inadequate to represent the blood of ,christ1 the outpouring love that sustains man's at-one-ment with ,god2 though shedding human blood brought to light the efficacy of divine ,life and ,love and its power over death4 ,jesus' sacrifice stands preeminently amidst physical suffering and human woe4 ,the glory of human life is in overcoming sickness1 sin1 and death4 ,jesus suffered for all mortals to bring in this glory2 and his purpose was to show them that the way out of the flesh1 out of the delusion of all human error1 must be through the baptism of suffering1 leading up to health1 harmony1 and heaven4 ,we shall leave the ceremonial law when we gain the truer sense of following ,christ in spirit1 and we shall no longer venture to materialize the spiritual and infinite meaning and efficacy of ,truth and ,love1 and the sacrifice that ,jesus made for us1 by commemorating his death with a material rite4 ,jesus said3 ,the hour cometh1 and now is1 when the true worshippers shall worship the ,father in spirit and in truth4 ,they drink the cup of ,christ and are baptized in the purification of persecution who discern his true merit1--the unseen glory of suffering for others4 ,physical torture affords but a slight illustration of the pangs which come to one upon whom the world of sense falls with its leaden weight in the endeavor to crush out of a career its divine destiny4 ,the blood of ,christ speaketh better things than that of ,abel4 ,the real atonement--so infinitely beyond the heathen conception that ,god requires human blood to propitiate ,his justice and bring ,his mercy--needs to be understood4 ,the real blood or ,life of ,spirit is not yet discerned4 ,love bruised and bleeding1 yet mounting to the throne of glory in purity and peace1 over the steps of uplifted humanity1--this is the deep significance of the blood of ,christ4 ,nameless woe1 everlasting victories1 are the blood1 the vital currents of ,christ ,jesus' life1 purchasing the freedom of mortals from sin and death4 ,this blood of ,jesus is everything to human hope and faith4 ,without it1 how poor the precedents of ,christianity6 ,what manner of ,science were ,christian ,science without the power to demonstrate the ,principle of such ,life2 and what hope have mortals but through deep humility and adoration to reach the understanding of this ,principle6 ,when human struggles cease1 and mortals yield lovingly to the purpose of divine ,love1 there will be no more sickness1 sorrow1 sin1 and death4 ,he who pointed the way of ,life conquered also the drear subtlety of death4 ,it was not to appease the wrath of ,god1 but to show the allness of ,love and the nothingness of hate1 sin1 and death1 that ,jesus suffered4 ,he lived that we also might live4 ,he suffered1 to show mortals the awful price paid by sin1 and how to avoid paying it4 ,he atoned for the terrible unreality of a supposed existence apart from ,god4 ,he suffered because of the shocking human idolatry that presupposes ,life1 substance1 ,soul1 and intelligence in matter1--which is the antipode of ,god1 and yet governs mankind4 ,the glorious truth of being--namely1 that ,god is the only ,mind1 ,life1 substance1 ,soul--needs no reconciliation with ,god1 for it is one with ,him now and forever4 ,jesus came announcing ,truth1 and saying not only the kingdom of ,god is at hand1 but the kingdom of ,god is within you4 ,hence there is no sin1 for ,god's kingdom is everywhere and supreme1 and it follows that the human kingdom is nowhere1 and must be unreal4 ,jesus taught and demonstrated the infinite as one1 and not as two4 ,he did not teach that there are two deities1--one infinite and the other finite2 for that would be impossible4 ,he knew ,god as infinite1 and therefore as the ,all-in-all2 and we shall know this truth when we awake in the divine likeness4 ,jesus' true and conscious being never left heaven for earth4 ,it abode forever above1 even while mortals believed it was here4 ,he once spoke of himself 7,john iii4 #ac7 as the ,son of man which is in heaven1--remarkable words1 as wholly opposed to the popular view of ,jesus' nature4 ,the real ,christ was unconscious of matter1 of sin1 disease1 and death1 and was conscious only of ,god1 of good1 of eternal ,life1 and harmony4 ,hence the human ,jesus had a resort to his higher self and relation to the ,father1 and there could find rest from unreal trials in the conscious reality and royalty of his being1--holding the mortal as unreal1 and the divine as real4 ,it was this retreat from material to spiritual selfhood which recuperated him for triumph over sin1 sickness1 and death4 ,had he been as conscious of these evils as he was of ,god1 wherein there is no consciousness of human error1 ,jesus could not have resisted them2 nor could he have conquered the malice of his foes1 rolled away the stone from the sepulchre1 and risen from human sense to a higher concept than that in which he appeared at his birth4 ,mankind's concept of ,jesus was a babe born in a manger1 even while the divine and ideal ,christ was the ,son of ,god1 spiritual and eternal4 ,in human conception ,god's offspring had to grow1 develop2 but in ,science his divine nature and manhood were forever complete1 and dwelt forever in the ,father4 ,jesus said1 ,ye do err1 not knowing the ,scriptures1 nor the power of ,god4 ,mortal thought gives the eternal ,god and infinite consciousness the license of a short-lived sinner1 to begin and end1 to know both evil and good2 when evil is temporal and ,god is eternal1--and when1 as a sphere of ,mind1 ,he cannot know beginning or end4 ,the spiritual interpretation of the vicarious atonement of ,jesus1 in ,christian ,science1 unfolds the full-orbed glory of that event2 but to regard this wonder of glory1 this most marvellous demonstration1 as a personal and material bloodgiving--or as a proof that sin is known to the divine ,mind1 and that what is unlike ,god demands ,his continual presence1 knowledge1 and power1 to meet and master it--would make the atonement to be less than the at-one-ment1 whereby the work of ,jesus would lose its efficacy and lack the signs following4 ,from ,genesis to ,revelation the ,scriptures teach an infinite ,god1 and none beside ,him2 and on this basis ,messiah and prophet saved the sinner and raised the dead1--uplifting the human understanding1 buried in a false sense of being4 ,jesus rendered null and void whatever is unlike ,god2 but he could not have done this if error and sin existed in the ,mind of ,god4 ,what ,god knows1 ,he also predestinates2 and it must be fulfilled4 ,jesus proved to perfection1 so far as this could be done in that age1 what ,christian ,science is to-day proving in a small degree1--the falsity of the evidence of the material senses that sin1 sickness1 and death are sensible claims1 and that ,god substantiates their evidence by knowing their claim4 ,he established the only true idealism on the basis that ,god is ,all1 and ,he is good1 and good is ,spirit2 hence there is no intelligent sin1 evil mind or matter3 and this is the only true philosophy and realism4 ,this divine mystery of godliness was the rock of ,truth1 on which he built his ,church of the new-born1 against which the gates of hell cannot prevail4 ,this ,truth is the rock which the builders rejected2 but the same is become the head of the corner4 ,this is the chief corner-stone1 the basis and support of creation1 the interpreter of one ,god1 the infinity and unity of good4 ,in proportion as mortals approximate the understanding of ,christian ,science1 they take hold of harmony1 and material incumbrance disappears4 ,having one ,god1 one ,mind1 one consciousness1--which includes only ,his own nature1--and loving your neighbor as yourself1 constitute ,christian ,science1 which must demonstrate the nothingness of any other state or stage of being4 ,,is ,,there ,,no ,,intercessory ,,prayer8 ,all prayer that is desire is intercessory2 but kindling desire loses a part of its purest spirituality if the lips try to express it4 ,it is a truism that we can think more lucidly and profoundly than we can write or speak4 ,the silent intercession and unvoiced imploring is an honest and potent prayer to heal and save4 ,the audible prayer may be offered to be heard of men1 though ostensibly to catch ,god's ear1--after the fashion of ,baal's prophets1--by speaking loud enough to be heard2 but when the heart prays1 and not the lips1 no dishonesty or vanity influences the petition4 ,prophet and apostle have glorified ,god in secret prayer1 and ,he has rewarded them openly4 ,prayer can neither change ,god1 nor bring ,his designs into mortal modes2 but it can and does change our modes and our false sense of ,life1 ,love1 and ,truth1 uplifting us to ,him4 ,such prayer humiliates1 purifies1 and quickens activity1 in the direction that is unerring4 ,true prayer is not asking ,god for love2 it is learning to love1 and to include all mankind in one affection4 ,prayer is the utilization of the love wherewith ,he loves us4 ,prayer begets an awakened desire to be and do good4 ,it makes new and scientific discoveries of ,god1 of ,his goodness and power4 ,it shows us more clearly than we saw before1 what we already have and are2 and most of all1 it shows us what ,god is4 ,advancing in this light1 we reflect it2 and this light reveals the pure ,mind-pictures1 in silent prayer1 even as photography grasps the solar light to portray the face of pleasant thought4 ,what but silent prayer can meet the demand1 ,pray without ceasing8 ,the apostle ,james said3 ,ye ask1 and receive not1 because ye ask amiss1 to consume it on your lusts4 ,because of vanity and self-righteousness1 mortals seek1 and expect to receive1 a material sense of approval2 and they expect also what is impossible1--a material and mortal sense of spiritual and immortal ,truth4 ,it is sometimes wise to hide from dull and base ears the pure pearls of awakened consciousness1 lest your pearls be trampled upon4 ,words may belie desire1 and pour forth a hypocrite's prayer2 but thoughts are our honest conviction4 ,i have no objection to audible prayer of the right kind2 but the inaudible is more effectual4 ,i instruct my students to pursue their mental ministrations very sacredly1 and never to touch the human thought save to issues of ,truth2 never to trespass mentally on individual rights2 never to take away the rights1 but only the wrongs of mankind4 ,otherwise they forfeit their ability to heal in ,science4 ,only when sickness1 sin1 and fear obstruct the harmony of ,mind and body1 is it right for one mind to meddle with another mind1 and control aright the thought struggling for freedom4 ,it is ,truth and ,love that cast out fear and heal the sick1 and mankind are better because of this4 ,if a change in the religious views of the patient comes with the change to health1 our ,father has done this2 for the human mind and body are made better only by divine influence4 ,,should ,,christians ,,beware ,,of ,,christian ,,science8 ,history repeats itself4 ,the ,pharisees of old warned the people to beware of ,jesus1 and contemptuously called him this fellow4 ,jesus said1 ,for which of these works do ye stone me8 as much as to ask1 ,is it the work most derided and envied that is most acceptable to ,god8 ,not that he would cease to do the will of his ,father on account of persecution1 but he would repeat his work to the best advantage for mankind and the glory of his ,father4 ,there are sinners in all societies1 and it is vain to look for perfection in churches or associations4 ,the life of ,christ is the perfect example2 and to compare mortal lives with this model is to subject them to severe scrutiny4 ,without question1 the subtlest forms of sin are trying to force the doors of ,science and enter in2 but this white sanctuary will never admit such as come to steal and to rob4 ,through long ages people have slumbered over ,christ's commands1 ,go ye into all the world1 and preach the gospel2 ,heal the sick1 cast out devils2 and now the ,church seems almost chagrined that by new discoveries of ,truth sin is losing prestige and power4 ,the ,rev4 ,dr4 ,a4,j4 ,gordon1 a ,boston ,baptist clergyman1 said in a sermon3 ,the prayer of faith shall save the sick1 and it is doing it to-day2 and as the faith of the ,church increases1 and ,christians more and more learn their duty to believe all things written in the ,scriptures1 will such manifestations of ,god's power increase among us4 ,such sentiments are wholesome avowals of ,christian ,science4 ,god is not unable or unwilling to heal1 and mortals are not compelled to have other gods before ,him1 and employ material forms to meet a mental want4 ,the divine ,spirit supplies all human needs4 ,jesus said to the sick1 ,thy sins are forgiven thee2 rise up and walk6 ,god's pardon is the destruction of all the ills that flesh is heir to4 ,all power belongs to ,god2 and it is not in all the vain power of dogma and philosophy to dispossess the divine ,mind of healing power1 or to cast out error with error1 even in the name and for the sake of ,christ1 and so heal the sick4 ,while ,science is engulfing error in bottomless oblivion1 the material senses would enthrone error as omnipotent and omnipresent1 with power to determine the fact and fate to being4 ,it is said that the devil is the ape of ,god4 ,the lie of evil holds its own by declaring itself both true and good4 ,the path of ,christian ,science is beset with false claimants1 aping its virtues1 but cleaving to their own vices4 ,denial of the authorship of ,science and ,health with ,key to the ,scriptures would make a lie the author of ,truth1 and so make ,truth itself a lie4 ,a distinguished clergyman came to be healed4 ,he said3 ,i am suffering from nervous prostration1 and have to eat beefsteak and drink strong coffee to support me through a sermon4 ,here a skeptic might well ask if the atonement had lost its efficacy for him1 and if ,christ's power to heal was not equal to the power of daily meat and drink4 ,the power of ,truth is not contingent on matter4 ,our ,master said1 ,come unto me1 all ye that labor and are heavy laden1 and ,i will give you rest4 ,truth rebukes error2 and whether stall-fed or famishing1 theology needs ,truth to stimulate and sustain a good sermon4 ,a lady said3 ,only ,he who knows all things can estimate the good your books are doing4 ,a distinguished ,doctor of ,divinity said3 ,your book leavens my sermons4 ,the following extract from a letter is a specimen of those received daily3 ,your book ,science and ,health is healing the sick1 binding up the broken-hearted1 preaching deliverance to the captive1 convicting the infidel1 alarming the hypocrite1 and quickening the ,christian4 ,christian ,science ,mind-healing is dishonored by those who take it up from mercenary motives1 for wealth and fame1 or think to build a baseless fabric of their own on another's foundation4 ,they cannot put the new wine into old bottles2 they can never engraft ,truth into error4 ,such students come to my ,college to learn a system which they go away to disgrace4 ,stealing or garbling my statements of ,mind-science will never prevent or reconstruct the wrecks of isms and help humanity4 ,science often suffers blame through the sheer ignorance of people1 while envy and hatred bark and bite at its heels4 ,a man's inability to heal1 on the ,principle of ,christian ,science1 substantiates his ignorance of its ,principle and practice1 and incapacitates him for correct comment4 ,this failure should make him modest4 ,christian ,science involves a new language1 and a higher demonstration of medicine and religion4 ,it is the new tongue of ,truth1 having its best interpretation in the power of ,christianity to heal4 ,my system of ,mind-healing swerves not from the highest ethics and from the spiritual goal4 ,to climb up by some other way than ,truth is to fall4 ,error has no hobby1 however boldly ridden or brilliantly caparisoned1 that can leap into the sanctum of ,christian ,science4 ,in ,queen ,elizabeth's time ,protestantism could sentence men to the dungeon or stake for their religion1 and so abrogate the rights of conscience and choke the channels of ,god4 ,ecclesiastical tyranny muzzled the mouth lisping ,god's praise2 and instead of healing1 it palsied the weak hand outstretched to ,god4 ,progress1 legitimate to the human race1 pours the healing balm of ,truth and ,love into every wound4 ,it reassures us that no ,reign of ,terror or rule of error will again unite ,church and ,state1 or re-enact1 through the civil arm of government1 the horrors of religious persecution4 ,the ,rev4 ,s4,e4 ,herrick1 a ,congregational clergyman of ,boston1 says3 ,heretics of yesterday are martyrs to-day4 ,in every age and clime1 ,on earth peace1 good will toward men must be the watchword of ,christianity4 ,jesus said3 ,i thank ,thee1 ,o ,father1 ,lord of heaven and earth1 that ,thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent1 and hast revealed them unto babes4 ,st4 ,paul said that without charity we are as sounding brass1 or a tinkling cymbal2 and he added3 ,charity suffereth long1 and is kind2 444 doth not behave itself unseemly1 444 thinketh no evil1 444 but rejoiceth in the truth4 ,to hinder the unfolding truth1 to ostracize whatever uplifts mankind1 is of course out of the question4 ,such an attempt indicates weakness1 fear1 or malice2 and such efforts arise from a spiritual lack1 felt1 though unacknowledged4 ,let it not be heard in ,boston that woman1 last at the cross and first at the sepulchre1 has no rights which man is bound to respect4 ,in natural law and in religion the right of woman to fill the highest measure of enlightened understanding and the highest places in government1 is inalienable1 and these rights are ably vindicated by the noblest of both sexes4 ,this is woman's hour1 with all its sweet amenities and its moral and religious reforms4 ,drifting into intellectual wrestlings1 we should agree to disagree2 and this harmony would anchor the ,church in more spiritual latitudes1 and so fulfil her destiny4 ,let the ,word have free course and be glorified4 ,the people clamor to leave cradle and swaddling-clothes4 ,the spiritual status is urging its highest demands on mortals1 and material history is drawing to a close4 ,truth cannot be stereotyped2 it unfoldeth forever4 ,one on ,god's side is a majority2 and ,lo1 ,i am with you alway1 is the pledge of the ,master4 ,the question now at issue is3 ,shall we have a practical1 spiritual ,christianity1 with its healing power1 or shall we have material medicine and superficial religion8 ,the advancing
