,science rouses so much natural doubt and questioning as this1 that ,god knows no such thing as sin4 ,indeed1 this may be set down as one of the things hard to be understood1 such as the apostle ,peter declared were taught by his fellow-apostle ,paul1 which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest 444 unto their own destruction4 7#b ,peter iii4 #af47 ,let us then reason together on this important subject1 whose statement in ,christian ,science may justly be characterized as wonderful4 ,does ,god know or behold sin1 sickness1 and death8 ,the nature and character of ,god is so little apprehended and demonstrated by mortals1 that ,i counsel my students to defer this infinite inquiry1 in their discussions of ,christian ,science4 ,in fact1 they had better leave the subject untouched1 until they draw nearer to the divine character1 and are practically able to testify1 by their lives1 that as they come closer to the true understanding of ,god they lose all sense of error4 ,the ,scriptures declare that ,god is too pure to behold iniquity 7,habakkuk i4 #ac72 but they also declare that ,god pitieth them who fear ,him2 that there is no place where ,his voice is not heard2 that ,he is a very present help in trouble4 ,the sinner has no refuge from sin1 except in ,god1 who is his salvation4 ,we must1 however1 realize ,god's presence1 power1 and love1 in order to be saved from sin4 ,this realization takes away man's fondness for sin and his pleasure in it2 and1 lastly1 it removes the pain which accrues to him from it4 ,then follows this1 as the finale in ,science3 ,the sinner loses his sense of sin1 and gains a higher sense of ,god1 in whom there is no sin4 ,the true man1 really saved1 is ready to testify of ,god in the infinite penetration of ,truth1 and can affirm that the ,mind which is good1 or ,god1 has no knowledge of sin4 ,in the same manner the sick lose their sense of sickness1 and gain that spiritual sense of harmony which contains neither discord nor disease4 ,according to this same rule1 in divine ,science1 the dying--if they die in the ,lord--awake from a sense of death to a sense of ,life in ,christ1 with a knowledge of ,truth and ,love beyond what they possessed before2 because their lives have grown so far toward the stature of manhood in ,christ ,jesus1 that they are ready for a spiritual transfiguration1 through their affections and understanding4 ,those who reach this transition1 called death1 without having rightly improved the lessons of this primary school of mortal existence1--and still believe in matter's reality1 pleasure1 and pain1--are not ready to understand immortality4 ,hence they awake only to another sphere of experience1 and must pass through another probationary state before it can be truly said of them3 ,blessed are the dead which die in the ,lord4 ,they upon whom the second death1 of which we read in the ,apocalypse 7,revelation xx4 #f71 hath no power1 are those who have obeyed ,god's commands1 and have washed their robes white through the sufferings of the flesh and the triumphs of ,spirit4 ,thus they have reached the goal in divine ,science1 by knowing ,him in whom they have believed4 ,this knowledge is not the forbidden fruit of sin1 sickness1 and death1 but it is the fruit which grows on the tree of life4 ,this is the understanding of ,god1 whereby man is found in the image and likeness of good1 not of evil2 of health1 not of sickness2 of ,life1 not of death4 ,god is ,all-in-all4 ,hence ,he is in ,himself only1 in ,his own nature and character1 and is perfect being1 or consciousness4 ,he is all the ,life and ,mind there is or can be4 ,within ,himself is every embodiment of ,life and ,mind4 ,if ,he is ,all1 ,he can have no consciousness of anything unlike ,himself2 because1 if ,he is omnipresent1 there can be nothing outside of ,himself4 ,now this self-same ,god is our helper4 ,he pities us4 ,he has mercy upon us1 and guides every event of our careers4 ,he is near to them who adore ,him4 ,to understand ,him1 without a single taint of our mortal1 finite sense of sin1 sickness1 or death1 is to approach ,him and become like ,him4 ,truth is ,god1 and in ,god's law4 ,this law declares that ,truth is ,all1 and there is no error4 ,this law of ,truth destroys every phase of error4 ,to gain a temporary consciousness of ,god's law is to feel1 in a certain finite human sense1 that ,god comes to us and pities us2 but the attainment of the understanding of ,his presence1 through the ,science of ,god1 destroys our sense of imperfection1 or of ,his absence1 through a diviner sense that ,god is all true consciousness2 and this convinces us that1 as we get still nearer ,him1 we must forever lose our own consciousness of error4 ,but how could we lose all consciousness of error1 if ,god be conscious of it8 ,god has not forbidden man to know ,him2 on the contrary1 the ,father bids man have the same ,mind which was also in ,christ ,jesus1--which was certainly the divine ,mind2 but ,god does forbid man's acquaintance with evil4 ,why8 ,because evil is no part of the divine knowledge4 ,john's ,gospel declares 7xvii4 #c7 that life eternal consists in the knowledge of the only true ,god1 and of ,jesus ,christ1 whom ,he has sent4 ,surely from such an understanding of ,science1 such knowing1 the vision of sin is wholly excluded4 ,nevertheless1 at the present crude hour1 no wise men or women will rudely or prematurely agitate a theme involving the ,all of infinity4 ,rather will they rejoice in the small understanding they have already gained of the wholeness of ,deity1 and work gradually and gently up toward the perfect thought divine4 ,this meekness will increase their apprehension of ,god1 because their mental struggles and pride of opinion will proportionately diminish4 ,every one should be encouraged not to accept any personal opinion on so great a matter1 but to seek the divine ,science of this question of ,truth by following upward individual convictions1 undisturbed by the frightened sense of any need of attempting to solve every ,life-problem in a day4 ,great is the mystery of godliness1 says ,paul2 and mystery involves the unknown4 ,no stubborn purpose to force conclusions on this subject will unfold in us a higher sense of ,deity2 neither will it promote the ,cause of ,truth or enlighten the individual thought4 ,let us respect the rights of conscience and the liberty of the sons of ,god1 so letting our moderation be known to all men4 ,let no enmity1 no untempered controversy1 spring up between ,christian ,science students and ,christians who wholly or partially differ from them as to the nature of sin and the marvellous unity of man with ,god shadowed forth in scientific thought4 ,rather let the stately goings of this wonderful part of ,truth be left to the supernal guidance4 ,these are but parts of ,thy ways1 says ,job2 and the whole is greater than its parts4 ,our present understanding is but the seed within itself1 for it is divine ,science1 bearing fruit after its kind4 ,sooner or later the whole human race will learn that1 in proportion as the spotless selfhood of ,god is understood1 human nature will be renovated1 and man will receive a higher selfhood1 derived from ,god1 and the redemption of mortals from sin1 sickness1 and death be established on everlasting foundations4 ,the ,science of physical harmony1 as now presented to the people in divine light1 is radical enough to promote as forcible collisions of thought as the age has strength to bear4 ,until the heavenly law of health1 according to ,christian ,science1 is firmly grounded1 even the thinkers are not prepared to answer intelligently leading questions about ,god and sin1 and the world is far from ready to assimilate such a grand and all-absorbing verity concerning the divine nature and character as is embraced in the theory of ,god's blindness to error and ignorance of sin4 ,no wise mother1 though a graduate of ,wellesley ,college1 will talk to her babe about the problems of ,euclid4 ,not much more than a half-century ago the assertion of universal salvation provoked discussion and horror1 similar to what our declarations about sin and ,deity must arouse1 if hastily pushed to the front while the platoons of ,christian ,science are not yet thoroughly drilled in the plainer manual of their spiritual armament4 ,wait patiently on the ,lord2 and in less than another fifty years ,his name will be magnified in the apprehension of this new subject1 as already ,he is glorified in the wide extension of belief in the impartial grace of ,god1--shown by the changes at ,andover ,seminary and in multitudes of other religious folds4 ,nevertheless1 though ,i thus speak1 and from my heart of hearts1 it is due both to ,christian ,science and myself to make also the following statement3 ,when ,i have most clearly seen and most sensibly felt that the infinite recognizes no disease1 this has not separated me from ,god1 but has so bound me to ,him as to enable me instantaneously to heal a cancer which had eaten its way to the jugular vein4 ,in the same spiritual condition ,i have been able to replace dislocated joints and raise the dying to instantaneous health4 ,people are now living who can bear witness to these cures4 ,herein is my evidence1 from on high1 that the views here promulgated on this subject are correct4 ,certain self-proved propositions pour into my waiting thought in connection with these experiences2 and here is one such conviction3 that an acknowledgment of the perfection of the infinite ,unseen confers a power nothing else can4 ,an incontestable point in divine ,science is1 that because ,god is ,all1 a realization of this fact dispels even the sense or consciousness of sin1 and brings us nearer to ,god1 bringing out the highest phenomena of the ,all-,mind4 ,seedtime and ,harvest ,let another query now be considered1 which gives much trouble to many earnest thinkers before ,science answers it4 ,is anything real of which the physical senses are cognizant8 ,everything is as real as you make it1 and no more so4 ,what you see1 hear1 feel1 is a mode of consciousness1 and can have no other reality than the sense you entertain of it4 ,it is dangerous to rest upon the evidence of the senses1 for this evidence is not absolute1 and therefore not real1 in our sense of the word4 ,all that is beautiful and good in your individual consciousness is permanent4 ,that which is not so is illusive and fading4 ,my insistence upon a proper understanding of the unreality of matter and evil arises from their deleterious effects1 physical1 moral1 and intellectual1 upon the race4 ,all forms of error are uprooted in ,science1 on the same basis whereby sickness is healed1--namely1 by the establishment1 through reason1 revelation1 and ,science1 of the nothingness of every claim of error1 even the doctrine of heredity and other physical causes4 ,you demonstrate the process of ,science1 and it proves my view conclusively1 that mortal mind is the cause of all disease4 ,destroy the mental sense of the disease1 and the disease itself disappears4 ,destroy the sense of sin1 and sin itself disappears4 ,material and sensual consciousness are mortal4 ,hence they must1 some time and in some way1 be reckoned unreal4 ,that time has partially come1 or my words would not have been spoken4 ,jesus has made the way plain1--so plain that all are without excuse who walk not in it2 but this way is not the path of physical science1 human philosophy1 or mystic psychology4 ,the talent and genius of the centuries have wrongly reckoned4 ,they have not based upon revelation their arguments and conclusions as to the source and resources of being1--its combinations1 phenomena1 and outcome1--but have built instead upon the sand of human reason4 ,they have not accepted the simple teaching and life of ,jesus as the only true solution of the perplexing problem of human existence4 ,sometimes it is said1 by those who fail to understand me1 that ,i monopolize2 and this is said because ideas akin to mine have been held by a few spiritual thinkers in all ages4 ,so they have1 but in a far different form4 ,healing has gone on continually2 yet healing1 as ,i teach it1 has not been practised since the days of ,christ4 ,what is the cardinal point of the difference in my metaphysical system8 ,this3 that by knowing the unreality of disease1 sin1 and death1 you demonstrate the allness of ,god4 ,this difference wholly separates my system from all others4 ,the reality of these so-called existences ,i deny1 because they are not to be found in ,god1 and this system is built on ,him as the sole cause4 ,it would be difficult to name any previous teachers1 save ,jesus and his apostles1 who have thus taught4 ,if there be any monopoly in my teaching1 it lies in this utter reliance upon the one ,god1 to whom belong all things4 ,life is ,god1 or ,spirit1 the supersensible eternal4 ,the universe and man are the spiritual phenomena of this one infinite ,mind4 ,spiritual phenomena never converge toward aught but infinite ,deity4 ,their gradations are spiritual and divine2 they cannot collapse1 or lapse into their opposites1 for ,god is their divine ,principle4 ,they live1 because ,he lives2 and they are eternally perfect1 because ,he is perfect1 and governs them in the ,truth of divine ,science1 whereof ,god is the ,alpha and ,omega1 the centre and circumference4 ,to attempt the calculation of ,his mighty ways1 from the evidence before the material senses1 is fatuous4 ,it is like commencing with the minus sign1 to learn the principle of positive mathematics4 ,god was not in the whirlwind4 ,he is not the blind force of a material universe4 ,mortals must learn this2 unless1 pursued by their fears1 they would endeavor to hide from ,his presence under their own falsities1 and call in vain for the mountains of unholiness to shield them from the penalty of error4 ,jesus taught us to walk over1 not into or with1 the currents of matter1 or mortal mind4 ,his teachings beard the lions in their dens4 ,he turned the water into wine1 he commanded the winds1 he healed the sick1--all in direct opposition to human philosophy and so-called natural science4 ,he annulled the laws of matter1 showing them to be laws of mortal mind1 not of ,god4 ,he showed the need of changing this mind and its abortive laws4 ,he demanded a change of consciousness and evidence1 and effected this change through the higher laws of ,god4 ,the palsied hand moved1 despite the boastful sense of physical law and order4 ,jesus stooped not to human consciousness1 nor to the evidence of the senses4 ,he heeded not the taunt1 ,that withered hand looks very real and feels very real2 but he cut off this vain boasting and destroyed human pride by taking away the material evidence4 ,if his patient was a theologian of some bigoted sect1 a physician1 or a professor of natural philosophy1--according to the ruder sort then prevalent1--he never thanked ,jesus for restoring his senseless hand2 but neither red tape nor indignity hindered the divine process4 ,jesus required neither cycles of time nor thought in order to mature fitness for perfection and its possibilities4 ,he said that the kingdom of heaven is here1 and is included in ,mind2 that while ye say1 ,there are yet four months1 and then cometh the harvest1 ,i say1 ,look up1 not down1 for your fields are already white for the harvest2 and gather the harvest by mental1 not material processes4 ,the laborers are few in this vineyard of ,mind-sowing and reaping2 but let them apply to the waiting grain the curving sickle of ,mind's eternal circle1 and bind it with bands of ,soul4 ,the ,deep ,things of ,god ,science reverses the evidence of the senses in theology1 on the same principle that it does in astronomy4 ,popular theology makes ,god tributary to man1 coming at human call2 whereas the reverse is true in ,science4 ,men must approach ,god reverently1 doing their own work in obedience to divine law1 if they would fulfil the intended harmony of being4 ,the principle of music knows nothing of discord4 ,god is harmony's selfhood4 ,his universal laws1 ,his unchangeableness1 are not infringed in ethics any more than in music4 ,to ,him there is no moral inharmony2 as we shall learn1 proportionately as we gain the true understanding of ,deity4 ,if ,god could be conscious of sin1 ,his infinite power would straightway reduce the universe to chaos4 ,if ,god has any real knowledge of sin1 sickness1 and death1 they must be eternal2 since ,he is1 in the very fibre of ,his being1 without beginning of years or end of days4 ,if ,god knows that which is not permanent1 it follows that ,he knows something which ,he must learn to unknow1 for the benefit of our race4 ,such a view would bring us upon an outworn theological platform1 which contains such planks as the divine repentance1 and the belief that ,god must one day do ,his work over again1 because it was not at first done aright4 ,can it be seriously held1 by any thinker1 that long after ,god made the universe1--earth1 man1 animals1 plants1 the sun1 the moon1 and the stars also1--,he should so gain wisdom and power from past experience that ,he could vastly improve upon ,his own previous work1--as ,burgess1 the boatbuilder1 remedies in the ,volunteer the shortcomings of the ,puritan's model8 ,christians are commanded to grow in grace4 ,was it necessary for ,god to grow in grace1 that ,he might rectify ,his spiritual universe8 ,the ,jehovah of limited ,hebrew faith might need repentance1 because ,his created children proved sinful2 but the ,new ,testament tells us of the ,father of lights1 with whom is no variableness1 neither shadow of turning4 ,god is not the shifting vane on the spire1 but the corner-stone of living rock1 firmer than everlasting hills4 ,as ,god is ,mind1 if this ,mind is familiar with evil1 all cannot be good therein4 ,our infinite model would be taken away4 ,what is in eternal ,mind must be reflected in man1 ,mind's image4 ,how then could man escape1 or hope to escape1 from a knowledge which is everlasting in his creator8 ,god never said that man would become better by learning to distinguish evil from good1--but the contrary1 that by this knowledge1 by man's first disobedience1 came death into the world1 and all our woe4 ,shall mortal man be more just than ,god8 asks the poet-patriarch4 ,may men rid themselves of an incubus which ,god never can throw off8 ,do mortals know more than ,god1 that they may declare ,him absolutely cognizant of sin8 ,god created all things1 and pronounced them good4 ,was evil among these good things8 ,man is ,god's child and image4 ,if ,god knows evil1 so must man1 or the likeness is incomplete1 the image marred4 ,if man must be destroyed by the knowledge of evil1 then his destruction comes through the very knowledge caught from ,god1 and the creature is punished for his likeness to his creator4 ,god is commonly called the sinless1 and man the sinful2 but if the thought of sin could be possible in ,deity1 would ,deity then be sinless8 ,would ,god not of necessity take precedence as the infinite sinner1 and human sin become only an echo of the divine8 ,such vagaries are to be found in heathen religious history4 ,there are1 or have been1 devotees who worship not the good ,deity1 who will not harm them1 but the bad deity1 who seeks to do them mischief1 and whom therefore they wish to bribe with prayers into quiescence1 as a criminal appeases1 with a money-bag1 the venal officer4 ,surely this is no ,christian worship6 ,in ,christianity man bows to the infinite perfection which he is bidden to imitate4 ,in ,truth1 such terms as divine sin and infinite sinner are unheard-of contradictions1--absurdities2 but would they be sheer nonsense1 if ,god has1 or can have1 a real knowledge of sin8 ,ways ,higher than ,our ,ways ,a lie has only one chance of successful deception1--to be accounted true4 ,evil seeks to fasten all error upon ,god1 and so make the lie seem part of eternal ,truth4 ,emerson says1 ,hitch your wagon to a star4 ,i say1 ,be allied to the deific power1 and all that is good will aid your journey1 as the stars in their courses fought against ,sisera4 7,judges v4 #bj47 ,hourly1 in ,christian ,science1 man thus weds himself with ,god1 or rather he ratifies a union predestined from all eternity2 but evil ties its wagon-load of offal to the divine chariots1--or seeks so to do1--that its vileness may be christened purity1 and its darkness get consolation from borrowed scintillations4 ,jesus distinctly taught the arrogant ,pharisees that1 from the beginning1 their father1 the devil1 was the would-be murderer of ,truth4 ,a right apprehension of the wonderful utterances of him who spake as never man spake1 would despoil error of its borrowed plumes1 and transform the universe into a home of marvellous light1--a consummation devoutly to be wished4 ,error says ,god must know evil because ,he knows all things2 but ,holy ,writ declares ,god told our first parents that in the day when they should partake of the fruit of evil1 they must surely die4 ,would it not absurdly follow that ,god must perish1 if ,he knows evil and evil necessarily leads to extinction8 ,rather let us think of ,god as saying1 ,i am infinite good2 therefore ,i know not evil4 ,dwelling in light1 ,i can see only the brightness of ,my own glory4 ,error may say that ,god can never save man from sin1 if ,he knows and sees it not2 but ,god says1 ,i am too pure to behold iniquity1 and destroy everything that is unlike ,myself4 ,many fancy that our heavenly ,father reasons thus3 ,if pain and sorrow were not in ,my mind1 ,i could not remedy them1 and wipe the tears from the eyes of ,my children4 ,error says you must know grief in order to console it4 ,truth1 ,god1 says you oftenest console others in troubles that you have not4 ,is not our comforter always from outside and above ourselves8 ,god says1 ,i show ,my pity through divine law1 not through human4 ,it is ,my sympathy with and ,my knowledge of harmony 7not inharmony7 which alone enable ,me to rebuke1 and eventually destroy1 every supposition of discord4 ,error says ,god must know death in order to strike at its root2 but ,god saith1 ,i am ever-conscious ,life1 and thus ,i conquer death2 for to be ever conscious of ,life is to be never conscious of death4 ,i am ,all4 ,a knowledge of aught beside ,myself is impossible4 ,if such knowledge of evil were possible to ,god1 it would lower ,his rank4 ,with ,god1 knowledge is necessarily foreknowledge2 and foreknowledge and foreordination must be one1 in an infinite ,being4 ,what ,deity foreknows1 ,deity must foreordain2 else ,he is not omnipotent1 and1 like ourselves1 ,he foresees events which are contrary to ,his creative will1 yet which ,he cannot avert4 ,if ,god knows evil at all1 ,he must have had foreknowledge thereof2 and if ,he foreknew it1 ,he must virtually have intended it1 or ordered it aforetime1--foreordained it2 else how could it have come into the world8 ,but this we cannot believe of ,god2 for if the supreme good could predestine or foreknow evil1 there would be sin in ,deity1 and this would be the end of infinite moral unity4 ,if therefore the light that is in thee be darkness1 how great is that darkness6 ,on the contrary1 evil is only a delusive deception1 without any actuality which ,truth can know4 ,rectifications ,how is a mistake to be rectified8 ,by reversal or revision1--by seeing it in its proper light1 and then turning it or turning from it4 ,we undo the statements of error by reversing them4 ,through these three statements1 or misstatements1 evil comes into authority3-- ,first3 ,the ,lord created it4 ,second3 ,the ,lord knows it4 ,third3 ,i am afraid of it4 ,by a reverse process of argument evil must be dethroned3-- ,first3 ,god never made evil4 ,second3 ,he knows it not4 ,third3 ,we therefore need not fear it4 ,try this process1 dear inquirer1 and so reach that perfect ,love which casteth out fear1 and then see if this ,love does not destroy in you all hate and the sense of evil4 ,you will awake to the perception of ,god as ,all-in-all4 ,you will find yourself losing the knowledge and the operation of sin1 proportionably as you realize the divine infinitude and believe that ,he can see nothing outside of ,his own focal distance4 ,a ,colloquy ,in ,romans 7ii4 #ae7 we read the apostle's description of mental processes wherein human thoughts are the mean while accusing or else excusing one another4 ,if we observe our mental processes1 we shall find that we are perpetually arguing with ourselves2 yet each mortal is not two personalities1 but one4 ,in like manner good and evil talk to one another2 yet they are not two but one1 for evil is naught1 and good only is reality4 ,evil4 ,god hath said1 ,ye shall eat of every tree of the garden4 ,if you do not1 your intellect will be circumscribed and the evidence of your personal senses be denied4 ,this would antagonize individual consciousness and existence4 ,good4 ,the ,lord is ,god4 ,with ,him is no consciousness of evil1 because there is nothing beside ,him or outside of ,him4 ,individual consciousness in man is inseparable from good4 ,there is no sensible matter1 no sense in matter2 but there is a spiritual sense1 a sense of ,spirit1 and this is the only consciousness belonging to true individuality1 or a divine sense of being4 ,evil4 ,why is this so8 ,good4 ,because man is made after ,god's eternal likeness1 and this likeness consists in a sense of harmony and immortality1 in which no evil can possibly dwell4 ,you may eat of the fruit of ,godlikeness1 but as to the fruit of ungodliness1 which is opposed to ,truth1--ye shall not touch it1 lest ye die4 ,evil4 ,but ,i would taste and know error for myself4 ,good4 ,thou shalt not admit that error is something to know or be known1 to eat or be eaten1 to see or be seen1 to feel or be felt4 ,to admit the existence of error would be to admit the truth of a lie4 ,evil4 ,but there is something besides good4 ,god knows that a knowledge of this something is essential to happiness and life4 ,a lie is as genuine as ,truth1 though not so legitimate a child of ,god4 ,whatever exists must come from ,god1 and be important to our knowledge4 ,error1 even1 is ,his offspring4 ,good4 ,whatever cometh not from the eternal ,spirit1 has its origin in the physical senses and material brains1 called human intellect and will-power1--alias intelligent matter4 ,in ,shakespeare's tragedy of ,king ,lear1 it was the traitorous and cruel treatment received by old ,gloster from his bastard son ,edmund which makes true the lines3 ,the gods are just1 and of our pleasant vices ,make instruments to scourge us4 ,his lawful son1 ,edgar1 was to his father ever loyal4 ,now ,god has no bastards to turn again and rend their ,maker4 ,the divine children are born of law and order1 and ,truth knows only such4 ,how well the ,shakespearean tale agrees with the word of ,scripture1 in ,hebrews xii4 #g1 #h3 ,if ye endure chastening1 ,god dealeth with you as with sons2 for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not8 ,but if ye be without chastisement1 whereof all are partakers1 then are ye bastards1 and not sons4 ,the doubtful or spurious evidence of the senses is not to be admitted1--especially when they testify concerning ,spirit1 whereof they are confessedly incompetent to speak4 ,evil4 ,but mortal mind and sin really exist6 ,good4 ,how can they exist1 unless ,god has created them8 ,and how can ,he create anything so wholly unlike ,himself and foreign to ,his nature8 ,an evil material mind1 so-called1 can conceive of ,god only as like itself1 and knowing both evil and good2 but a purely good and spiritual consciousness has no sense whereby to cognize evil4 ,mortal mind is the opposite of immortal ,mind1 and sin the opposite of goodness4 ,i am the infinite ,all4 ,from me proceedeth all ,mind1 all consciousness1 all individuality1 all being4 ,my ,mind is divine good1 and cannot drift into evil4 ,to believe in minds many is to depart from the supreme sense of harmony4 ,your assumptions insist that there is more than the one ,mind1 more than the one ,god2 but verily ,i say unto you1 ,god is ,all-in-all2 and you can never be outside of ,his oneness4 ,evil4 ,i am a finite consciousness1 a material individuality1--a mind in matter1 which is both evil and good4 ,good4 ,all consciousness is ,mind2 and ,mind is ,god1--an infinite1 and not a finite consciousness4 ,this consciousness is reflected in individual consciousness1 or man1 whose source is infinite ,mind4 ,there is no really finite mind1 no finite consciousness4 ,there is no material substance1 for ,spirit is all that endureth1 and hence is the only substance4 ,there is1 can be1 no evil mind1 because ,mind is ,god4 ,god and ,his ideas--that is1 ,god and the universe--constitute all that exists4 ,man1 as ,god's offspring1 must be spiritual1 perfect1 eternal4 ,evil4 ,i am something separate from good or ,god4 ,i am substance4 ,my mind is more than matter4 ,in my mortal mind1 matter becomes conscious1 and is able to see1 taste1 hear1 feel1 smell4 ,whatever matter thus affirms is mainly correct4 ,if you1 ,o good1 deny this1 then ,i deny your truthfulness4 ,if you say that matter is unconscious1 you stultify my intellect1 insult my conscience1 and dispute self-evident facts2 for nothing can be clearer than the testimony of the five senses4 ,good4 ,spirit is the only substance4 ,spirit is ,god1 and ,god is good2 hence good is the only substance1 the only ,mind4 ,mind is not1 cannot be1 in matter4 ,it sees1 hears1 feels1 tastes1 smells as ,mind1 and not as matter4 ,matter cannot talk2 and hence1 whatever it appears to say of itself is a lie4 ,this lie1 that ,mind can be in matter1--claiming to be something beside ,god1 denying ,truth and its demonstration in ,christian ,science1--this lie ,i declare an illusion4 ,this denial enlarges the human intellect by removing its evidence from sense to ,soul1 and from finiteness into infinity4 ,it honors conscious human individuality by showing ,god as its source4 ,evil4 ,i am a creator1--but upon a material1 not a spiritual basis4 ,i give life1 and ,i can destroy life4 ,good4 ,evil is not a creator4 ,god1 good1 is the only creator4 ,evil is not conscious or conscientious ,mind2 it is not individual1 not actual4 ,evil is not spiritual1 and therefore has no groundwork in ,life1 whose only source is ,spirit4 ,the elements which belong to the eternal ,all1--,life1 ,truth1 ,love1--evil can never take away4 ,evil4 ,i am intelligent matter2 and matter is egoistic1 having its own innate selfhood and the capacity to evolve mind4 ,god is in matter1 and matter reproduces ,god4 ,from ,him come my forms1 near or remote4 ,this is my honor1 that ,god is my author1 authority1 governor1 disposer4 ,i am proud to be in ,his outstretched hands1 and ,i shirk all responsibility for myself as evil1 and for my varying manifestations4 ,good4 ,you mistake1 ,o evil6 ,god is not your authority and law4 ,neither is ,he the author of the material changes1 the phantasma1 a belief in which leads to such teaching as we find in the hymn-verse so often sung in church3-- ,chance and change are busy ever1 ,man decays and ages move2 ,but ,his mercy waneth never1-- ,god is wisdom1 ,god is love4 ,now if it be true that ,god's power never waneth1 how can it be also true that chance and change are universal factors1--that man decays8 ,many ordinary ,christians protest against this stanza of ,bowring's1 and its sentiment is foreign to ,christian ,science4 ,if ,god be changeless goodness1 as sings another line of this hymn1 what place has chance in the divine economy8 ,nay1 there is in ,god naught fantastic4 ,all is real1 all is serious4 ,the phantasmagoria is a product of human dreams4 ,the ,ego ,from various friends comes inquiry as to the meaning of a word employed in the foregoing colloquy4 ,there are two ,english words1 often used as if they were synonyms1 which really have a shade of difference between them4 ,an egotist is one who talks much of himself4 ,egotism implies vanity and self-conceit4 ,egoism is a more philosophical word1 signifying a passionate love of self1 which doubts all existence except its own4 ,an egoist1 therefore1 is one uncertain of everything except his own existence4 ,applying these distinctions to evil and ,god1 we shall find that evil is egotistic1--boastful1 but fleeing like a shadow at daybreak2 while ,god is egoistic1 knowing only ,his own all-presence1 all-knowledge1 all-power4 ,soul ,we read in the ,hebrew ,scriptures1 ,the soul that sinneth1 it shall die4 ,what is ,soul8 ,is it a reality within the mortal body8 ,who can prove that8 ,anatomy has not descried nor described ,soul4 ,it was never touched by the scalpel nor cut with the dissecting-knife4 ,the five physical senses do not cognize it4 ,who1 then1 dares define ,soul as something within man8 ,as well might you declare some old castle to be peopled with demons or angels1 though never a light or form was discerned therein1 and not a spectre had ever been seen going in or coming out4 ,the common hypotheses about souls are even more vague than ordinary material conjectures1 and have less basis2 because material theories are built on the evidence of the material senses4 ,soul must be ,god2 since we learn ,soul only as we learn ,god1 by spiritualization4 ,as the five senses take no cognizance of ,soul1 so they take no cognizance of ,god4 ,whatever cannot be taken in by mortal mind--by human reflection1 reason1 or belief--must be the unfathomable ,mind1 which eye hath not seen1 nor ear heard4 ,soul stands in this relation to every hypothesis as to its human character4 ,if ,soul sins1 it is a sinner1 and ,jewish law condemned the sinner to death1--as does all criminal law1 to a certain extent4 ,spirit never sins1 because ,spirit is ,god4 ,hence1 as ,spirit1 ,soul is sinless1 and is ,god4 ,therefore there is1 there can be1 no spiritual death4 ,transcending the evidence of the material senses1 ,science declares ,god to be the ,soul of all being1 the only ,mind and intelligence in the universe4 ,there is but one ,god1 one ,soul1 or ,mind1 and that one is infinite1 supplying all that is absolutely immutable and eternal1--,truth1 ,life1 ,love4 ,science reveals ,soul as that which the senses cannot define from any standpoint of their own4 ,what the physical senses miscall soul1 ,christian ,science defines as material sense2 and herein lies the discrepancy between the true ,science of ,soul and that material sense of a soul which that very sense declares can never be seen or measured or weighed or touched by physicality4 ,often we can elucidate the deep meaning of the ,scriptures by reading sense instead of soul1 as in the ,forty-second ,psalm3 ,why art thou cast down1 ,o my soul sense8444 ,hope thou in ,god ,soul3 for ,i shall yet praise ,him1 who is the health of my countenance1 and my ,god my ,soul1 immortality4 ,the ,virgin-mother's sense being uplifted to behold ,spirit as the sole origin of man1 she exclaimed1 ,my soul spiritual sense doth magnify the ,lord4 ,human language constantly uses the word soul for sense4 ,this it does under the delusion that the senses can reverse the spiritual facts of ,science1 whereas ,science reverses the testimony of the material senses4 ,soul is ,life1 and being spiritual ,life1 never sins4 ,material sense is the so-called material life4 ,hence this lower sense sins and suffers1 according to material belief1 till divine understanding takes away this belief and restores ,soul1 or spiritual ,life4 ,he restoreth my soul1 says ,david4 ,in his first epistle to the ,corinthians 7xv4 #de7 ,paul writes3 ,the first man ,adam was made a living soul2 the last ,adam was made a quickening spirit4 ,the apostle refers to the second ,adam as the ,messiah1 our blessed ,master1 whose interpretation of ,god and ,his creation--by restoring the spiritual sense of man as immortal instead of mortal--made humanity victorious over death and the grave4 ,when ,i discovered the power of ,spirit to break the cords of matter1 through a change in the mortal sense of things1 then ,i discerned the last ,adam as a quickening ,spirit1 and understood the meaning of the declaration of ,holy ,writ1 ,the first shall be last1--the living ,soul shall be found a quickening ,spirit2 or1 rather1 shall reflect the ,life of the divine ,arbiter4 ,there is no ,matter ,god is a ,spirit 7or1 more accurately translated1 ,god is ,spirit71 declares the ,scripture 7,john iv4 #bd71 and they that worship ,him must worship ,him in spirit and in truth4 ,if ,god is ,spirit1 and ,god is ,all1 surely there can be no matter2 for the divine ,all must be ,spirit4 ,the tendency of ,christianity is to spiritualize thought and action4 ,the demonstrations of ,jesus annulled the claims of matter1 and overruled laws material as emphatically as they annihilated sin4 ,according to ,christian ,science1 the first idolatrous claim of sin is1 that matter exists2 the second1 that matter is substance2 the third1 that matter has intelligence2 and the fourth1 that matter1 being so endowed1 produces life and death4 ,hence my conscientious position1 in the denial of matter1 rests on the fact that matter usurps the authority of ,god1 ,spirit2 and the nature and character of matter1 the antipode of ,spirit1 include all that denies and defies ,spirit1 in quantity or quality4 ,this subject can be enlarged4 ,it can be shown1 in detail1 that evil does not obtain in ,spirit1 ,god2 and that ,god1 or good1 is ,spirit alone2 whereas1 evil does1 according to belief1 obtain in matter2 and that evil is a false claim1--false to ,god1 false to ,truth and ,life4 ,hence the claim of matter usurps the prerogative of ,god1 saying1 ,i am a creator4 ,god made me1 and ,i make man and the material universe4 ,spirit is the only creator1 and man1 including the universe1 is ,his spiritual concept4 ,by matter is commonly meant mind1--not the highest ,mind1 but a false form of mind4 ,this so-called mind and matter cannot be separated in origin and action4 ,what is this mind8 ,it is not the ,mind of ,spirit2 for spiritualization of thought destroys all sense of matter as substance1 ,life1 or intelligence1 and enthrones ,god in the eternal qualities of ,his being4 ,this lower1 misnamed mind is a false claim1 a suppositional mind1 which ,i prefer to call mortal mind4 ,true ,mind is immortal4 ,this mortal mind declares itself material1 in sin1 sickness1 and death1 virtually saying1 ,i am the opposite of ,spirit1 of holiness1 harmony1 and ,life4 ,to this declaration ,christian ,science responds1 even as did our ,master3 ,you were a murderer from the beginning4 ,the truth abode not in you4 ,you are a liar1 and the father of it4 ,here it appears that a liar was in the neuter gender1--neither masculine nor feminine4 ,hence it was not man 7the image of ,god7 who lied1 but the false claim to personality1 which ,i call mortal mind2 a claim which ,christian ,science uncovers1 in order to demonstrate the falsity of the claim4 ,there are lesser arguments which prove matter to be identical with mortal mind1 and this mind a lie4 ,the physical senses 7matter really having no sense7 give the only pretended testimony there can be as to the existence of a substance called matter4 ,now these senses1 being material1 can only testify from their own evidence1 and concerning themselves2 yet we have it on divine authority3 ,if ,i bear witness of myself1 my witness is not true4 7,john v4 #ca47 ,in other words3 matter testifies of itself1 ,i am matter2 but unless matter is mind1 it cannot talk or testify2 and if it is mind1 it is certainly not the ,mind of ,christ1 not the ,mind that is identical with ,truth4 ,brain1 thus assuming to testify1 is only matter within the skull1 and is believed to be mind only through error and delusion4 ,examine that form of matter called brains1 and you find no mind therein4 ,hence the logical sequence1 that there is in reality neither matter nor mortal mind1 but that the self-testimony of the physical senses is false4 ,examine these witnesses for error1 or falsity1 and observe the foundations of their testimony1 and you will find them divided in evidence1 mocking the ,scripture 7,matthew xviii4 #af71 ,in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established4 ,sight4 ,mortal mind declares that matter sees through the organizations of matter1 or that mind sees by means of matter4 ,disorganize the so-called material structure1 and then mortal mind says1 ,i cannot see2 and declares that matter is the master of mind1 and that non-intelligence governs4 ,mortal mind admits that it sees only material images1 pictured on the eye's retina4 ,what then is the line of the syllogism8 ,it must be this3 ,that matter is not seen2 that mortal mind cannot see without matter2 and therefore that the whole function of material sight is an illusion1 a lie4 ,here comes in the summary of the whole matter1 wherewith we started3 that ,god is ,all1 and ,god is ,spirit2 therefore there is nothing but ,spirit2 and consequently there is no matter4 ,touch4 ,take another train of reasoning4 ,mortal mind says that matter cannot feel matter2 yet put your finger on a burning coal1 and the nerves1 material nerves1 do feel matter4 ,again ,i ask3 ,what evidence does mortal mind afford that matter is substantial1 is hot or cold8 ,take away mortal mind1 and matter could not feel what it calls substance4 ,take away matter1 and mortal mind could not cognize its own so-called substance1 and this so-called mind would have no identity4 ,nothing would remain to be seen or felt4 ,what is substance8 ,what is the reality of ,god and the universe8 ,immortal ,mind is the real substance1--,spirit1 ,life1 ,truth1 and ,love4 ,taste4 ,mortal mind says1 ,i taste2 and this is sweet1 this is sour4 ,let mortal mind change1 and say that sour is sweet1 and so it would be4 ,if every mortal mind believed sweet to be sour1 it would be so2 for the qualities of matter are but qualities of mortal mind4 ,change the mind1 and the quality changes4 ,destroy the belief1 and the quality disappears4 ,the so-called material senses are found1 upon examination1 to be mortally mental1 instead of material4 ,reduced to its proper denomination1 matter is mortal mind2 yet1 strictly speaking1 there is no mortal mind1 for ,mind is immortal1 and is not matter1 but ,spirit4 ,force4 ,what is gravitation8 ,mortal mind says gravitation is a material power1 or force4 ,i ask1 ,which was first1 matter or power8 ,that which was first was ,god1 immortal ,mind1 the ,parent of all4 ,but ,god is ,truth1 and the forces of ,truth are moral and spiritual1 not physical4 ,they are not the merciless forces of matter4 ,what then are the so-called forces of matter8 ,they are the phenomena of mortal mind1 and matter and mortal mind are one2 and this one is a misstatement of ,mind1 ,god4 ,a molecule1 as matter1 is not formed by ,spirit2 for ,spirit is spiritual consciousness alone4 ,hence this spiritual consciousness can form nothing unlike itself1 ,spirit1 and ,spirit is the only creator4 ,the material atom is an outlined falsity of consciousness1 which can gather additional evidence of consciousness and life only as it adds lie to lie4 ,this process it names material attraction1 and endows with the double capacity of creator and creation4 ,from the beginning this lie was the false witness against the fact that ,spirit is ,all1 beside which there is no other existence4 ,the use of a lie is that it unwittingly confirms ,truth1 when handled by ,christian ,science1 which reverses false testimony and gains a knowledge of ,god from opposite facts1 or phenomena4 ,this whole subject is met and solved by ,christian ,science according to ,scripture4 ,thus we see that ,spirit is ,truth and eternal reality2 that matter is the opposite of ,spirit1--referred to in the ,new ,testament as the flesh at war with ,spirit2 hence1 that matter is erroneous1 transitory1 unreal4 ,a further proof of this is the demonstration1 according to ,christian ,science1 that by the reduction and the rejection of the claims of matter 7instead of acquiescence therein7 man is improved physically1 mentally1 morally1 spiritually4 ,to deny the existence or reality of matter1 and yet admit the reality of moral evil1 sin1 or to say that the divine ,mind is conscious of evil1 yet is not conscious of matter1 is erroneous4 ,this error stultifies the logic of divine ,science1 and must interfere with its practical demonstration4 ,is ,there no ,death8 ,jesus not only declared himself the way and the truth1 but also the life4 ,god is ,life2 and as there is but one ,god1 there can be but one ,life4 ,must man die1 then1 in order to inherit eternal life and enter heaven8 ,our ,master said1 ,the kingdom of heaven is at hand4 ,then ,god and heaven1 or ,life1 are present1 and death is not the real stepping-stone to ,life and happiness4 ,they are now and here2 and a change in human consciousness1 from sin to holiness1 would reveal this wonder of being4 ,because ,god is ever present1 no boundary of time can separate us from ,him and the heaven of ,his presence2 and because ,god is ,life1 all ,life is eternal4 ,is it unchristian to believe there is no death8 ,not unless it be a sin to believe that ,god is ,life and ,all-in-all4 ,evil and disease do not testify of ,life and ,god4 ,human beings are physically mortal1 but spiritually immortal4 ,the evil accompanying physical personality is illusive and mortal2 but the good attendant upon spiritual individuality is immortal4 ,existing here and now1 this unseen individuality is real and eternal4 ,the so-called material senses1 and the mortal mind which is misnamed man1 take no cognizance of spiritual individuality1 which manifests immortality1 whose ,principle is ,god4 ,to ,god alone belong the indisputable realities of being4 ,death is a contradiction of ,life1 or ,god2 therefore it is not in accordance with ,his law1 but antagonistic thereto4 ,death1 then1 is error1 opposed to ,truth1--even the unreality of mortal mind1 not the reality of that ,mind which is ,life4 ,error has no life1 and is virtually without existence4 ,life is real2 and all is real which proceeds from ,life and is inseparable from it4 ,it is unchristian to believe in the transition called material death1 since matter has no life1 and such misbelief must enthrone another power1 an imaginary life1 above the living and true ,god4 ,a material sense of life robs ,god1 by declaring that not ,he alone is ,life1 but that something else also is life1--thus affirming the existence and rulership of more gods than one4 ,this idolatrous and false sense of life is all that dies1 or appears to die4 ,the opposite understanding of ,god brings to light ,life and immortality4 ,death has no quality of ,life2 and no divine fiat commands us to believe in aught which is unlike ,god1 or to deny that ,he is ,life eternal4 ,life as ,god1 moral and spiritual good1 is not seen in the mineral1 vegetable1 or animal kingdoms4 ,hence the inevitable conclusion that ,life is not in these kingdoms1 and that the popular views to this effect are not up to the ,christian standard of ,life1 or equal to the reality of being1 whose ,principle is ,god4 ,when the ,word is made flesh among mortals1 the ,truth of ,life is rendered practical on the body4 ,eternal ,life is partially understood2 and sickness1 sin1 and death yield to holiness1 health1 and ,life1--that is1 to ,god4 ,the lust of the flesh and the pride of physical life must be quenched in the divine essence1--that omnipotent ,love which annihilates hate1 that ,life which knows no death4 ,who hath believed our report8 ,who understands these sayings8 ,he to whom the arm of the ,lord is revealed4 ,he loves them from whom divine ,science removes human weakness by divine strength1 and who unveil the ,messiah1 whose name is ,wonderful4 ,man has no underived power4 ,that selfhood is false which opposes itself to ,god1 claims another father1 and denies spiritual sonship2 but as many as receive the knowledge of ,god in ,science must reflect1 in some degree1 the power of ,him who gave and giveth man dominion over all the earth4 ,as soldiers of the cross we must be brave1 and let ,science declare the immortal status of man1 and deny the evidence of the material senses1 which testify that man dies4 ,as the image of ,god1 or ,life1 man forever reflects and embodies ,life1 not death4 ,the material senses testify falsely4 ,they presuppose that ,god is good and that man is evil1 that ,deity is deathless1 but that man dies1 losing the divine likeness4 ,science and material sense conflict at all points1 from the revolution of the earth to the fall of a sparrow4 ,it is mortality only that dies4 ,to say that you and ,i1 as mortals1 will not enter this dark shadow of material sense1 called death1 is to assert what we have not proved2 but man in ,science never dies4 ,material sense1 or the belief of life in matter1 must perish1 in order to prove man deathless4 ,as ,truth supersedes error1 and bears the fruits of ,love1 this understanding of ,truth subordinates the belief in death1 and demonstrates ,life as imperative in the divine order of being4 ,jesus declares that they who believe his sayings will never die2 therefore mortals can no more receive everlasting life by believing in death1 than they can become perfect by believing in imperfection and living imperfectly4 ,life is ,god1 and ,god is good4 ,hence ,life abides in man1 if man abides in good1 if he lives in ,god1 who holds ,life by a spiritual and not by a material sense of being4 ,a sense of death is not requisite to a proper or true sense of ,life1 but beclouds it4 ,death can never alarm or even appear to him who fully understands ,life4 ,the death-penalty comes through our ignorance of ,life1--of that which is without beginning and without end1--and is the punishment of this ignorance4 ,holding a material sense of ,life1 and lacking the spiritual sense of it1 mortals die1 in belief1 and regard all things as temporal4 ,a sense material apprehends nothing strictly belonging to the nature and office of ,life4 ,it conceives and beholds nothing but mortality1 and has but a feeble concept of immortality4 ,in order to reach the true knowledge and consciousness of ,life1 we must learn it of good4 ,of evil we can never learn it1 because sin shuts out the real sense of ,life1 and brings in an unreal sense of suffering and death4 ,knowledge of evil1 or belief in it1 involves a loss of the true sense of good1 ,god2 and to know death1 or to believe in it1 involves a temporary loss of ,god1 the infinite and only ,life4 ,resurrection from the dead 7that is1 from the belief in death7 must come to all sooner or later2 and they who have part in this resurrection are they upon whom the second death has no power4 ,the sweet and sacred sense of the permanence of man's unity with his ,maker can illumine our present being with a continual presence and power of good1 opening wide the portal from death into ,life2 and when this ,life shall appear we shall be like ,him1 and we shall go to the ,father1 not through death1 but through ,life2 not through error1 but through ,truth4 ,all ,life is ,spirit1 and ,spirit can never dwell in its antagonist1 matter4 ,life1 therefore1 is deathless1 because ,god cannot be the opposite of ,himself4 ,in ,christian ,science there is no matter2 hence matter neither lives nor dies4 ,to the senses1 matter appears to both live and die1 and these phenomena appear to go on ad infinitum2 but such a theory implies perpetual disagreement with ,spirit4 ,life1 ,god1 being everywhere1 it must follow that death can be nowhere2 because there is no place left for it4 ,soul1 ,spirit1 is deathless4 ,matter1 sin1 and death are not the outcome of ,spirit1 holiness1 and ,life4 ,what then are matter1 sin1 and death8 ,they can be nothing except the results of material consciousness2 but material consciousness can have no real existence1 because it is not a living--that is to say1 a divine and intelligent--reality4 ,that man must be vicious before he can be virtuous1 dying before he can be deathless1 material before he can be spiritual1 is an error of the senses2 for the very opposite of this error is the genuine ,science of being4 ,man1 in ,science1 is as perfect and immortal now1 as when the morning stars sang together1 and all the sons of ,god shouted for joy4 ,with ,christ1 ,life was not merely a sense of existence1 but a sense of might and ability to subdue material conditions4 ,no wonder people were astonished at his doctrine2 for he taught them as one having authority1 and not as the scribes4 ,as defined by ,jesus1 ,life had no beginning2 nor was it the result of organization1 or of an infusion of power into matter4 ,to him1 ,life was ,spirit4 ,truth1 defiant of error or matter1 is ,science1 dispelling a false sense and leading man into the true sense of selfhood and ,godhood2 wherein the mortal does not develop the immortal1 nor the material the spiritual1 but wherein true manhood and womanhood go forth in the radiance of eternal being and its perfections1 unchanged and unchangeable4 ,this generation seems too material for any strong demonstration over death1 and hence cannot bring out the infinite reality of ,life1--namely1 that there is no death1 but only ,life4 ,the present mortal sense of being is too finite for anchorage in infinite good1 ,god1 because mortals now believe in the possibility that ,life can be evil4 ,the achievement of this ultimatum of ,science1 complete triumph over death1 requires time and immense spiritual growth4 ,i have by no means spoken of myself1 ,i cannot speak of myself as sufficient for these things4 ,i insist only upon the fact1 as it exists in divine ,science1 that man dies not1 and on the words of the ,master in support of this verity1--words which can never pass away till all be fulfilled4 ,because of these profound reasons ,i urge ,christians to have more faith in living than in dying4 ,i exhort them to accept ,christ's promise1 and unite the influence of their own thoughts with the power of his teachings1 in the ,science of being4 ,this will interpret the divine power to human capacity1 and enable us to apprehend1 or lay hold upon1 that for which1 as ,paul says in the third chapter of ,philippians1 we are also apprehended of or grasped by ,christ ,jesus1--the ever-present ,life which knows no death1 the omnipresent ,spirit which knows no matter4 ,personal ,statements ,many misrepresentations are made concerning my doctrines1 some of which are as unkind and unjust as they are untrue2 but ,i can only repeat the ,master's words3 ,they know not what they do4 ,the foundations of these assertions1 like the structure raised thereupon1 are vain shadows1 repeating--if the popular couplet may be so paraphrased-- ,the old1 old story1 ,of ,satan and his lie4 ,in the days of ,eden1 humanity was misled by a false personality1--a talking snake1--according to ,biblical history4 ,this pretender taught the opposite of ,truth4 ,this abortive ego1 this fable of error1 is laid bare in ,christian ,science4 ,human theories call1 or miscall1 this evil a child of ,god4 ,philosophy would multiply and subdivide personality into everything that exists1 whether expressive or not expressive of the ,mind which is ,god4 ,human wisdom says of evil1 ,the ,lord knows it6 thus carrying out the serpent's assurance3 ,in the day ye eat thereof when you1 lie1 get the floor1 then your eyes shall be opened you shall be conscious matter1 and ye shall be as gods1 knowing good and evil you shall believe a lie1 and this lie shall seem truth4 ,bruise the head of this serpent1 as ,truth and the woman are doing in ,christian ,science1 and it stings your heel1 rears its crest proudly1 and goes on saying1 ,am ,i not myself8 ,am ,i not mind and matter1 person and thing8 ,we should answer3 ,yes6 you are indeed yourself1 and need most of all to be rid of this self1 for it is very far from ,god's likeness4 ,the egotist must come down and learn1 in humility1 that ,god never made evil4 ,an evil ego1 and his assumed power1 are falsities4 ,these falsities need a denial4 ,the falsity is the teaching that matter can be conscious2 and conscious matter implies pantheism4 ,this pantheism ,i unveil4 ,i try to show its all-pervading presence in certain forms of theology and philosophy1 where it becomes error's affirmative to ,truth's negative4 ,anatomy and physiology make mind-matter a habitant of the cerebellum1 whence it telegraphs and telephones over its own body1 and goes forth into an imaginary sphere of its own creation and limitation1 until it finally dies in order to better itself4 ,but ,truth never dies1 and death is not the goal which ,truth seeks4 ,the evil ego has but the visionary substance of matter4 ,it lacks the substance of ,spirit1--,mind1 ,life1 ,soul4 ,mortal mind is self-creative and self-sustained1 until it becomes non-existent4 ,it has no origin or existence in ,spirit1 immortal ,mind1 or good4 ,matter is not truly conscious2 and mortal error1 called mind1 is not ,godlike4 ,these are the shadowy and false1 which neither think nor speak4 ,all ,truth is from inspiration and revelation1--from ,spirit1 not from flesh4 ,we do not see much of the real man here1 for he is ,god's man2 while ours is man's man4 ,i do not deny1 ,i maintain1 the individuality and reality of man2 but ,i do so on a divine ,principle1 not based on a human conception and birth4 ,the scientific man and his ,maker are here2 and you would be none other than this man1 if you would subordinate the fleshly perceptions to the spiritual sense and source of being4 ,jesus said1 ,i and my ,father are one4 ,he taught no selfhood as existent in matter4 ,in his identity there is no evil4 ,individuality and ,life were real to him only as spiritual and good1 not as material or evil4 ,this incensed the rabbins against ,jesus1 because it was an indignity to their personality2 and this personality they regarded as both good and evil1 as is still claimed by the worldly-wise4 ,to them evil was even more the ego than was the good4 ,sin1 sickness1 and death were evil's concomitants4 ,this evil ego they believed must extend throughout the universe1 as being equally identical and self-conscious with ,god4 ,this ego was in the earthquake1 thunderbolt1 and tempest4 ,the ,pharisees fought ,jesus on this issue4 ,it furnished the battle-ground of the past1 as it does of the present4 ,the fight was an effort to enthrone evil4 ,jesus assumed the burden of disproof by destroying sin1 sickness1 and death1 to sight and sense4 ,nowhere in ,scripture is evil connected with good1 the being of ,god1 and with every passing hour it is losing its false claim to existence or consciousness4 ,all that can exist is ,god and ,his idea4 ,credo ,it is fair to ask of every one a reason for the faith within4 ,though it be but to repeat my twice-told tale1--nay1 the tale already told a hundred times1--yet ask1 and ,i will answer4 ,do you believe in ,god8 ,i believe more in ,him than do most ,christians1 for ,i have no faith in any other thing or being4 ,he sustains my individuality4 ,nay1 more--,he is my individuality and my ,life4 ,because ,he lives1 ,i live4 ,he heals all my ills1 destroys my iniquities1 deprives death of its sting1 and robs the grave of its victory4 ,to me ,god is ,all4 ,he is best understood as ,supreme ,being1 as infinite and conscious ,life1 as the affectionate ,father and ,mother of all ,he creates2 but this divine ,parent no more enters into ,his creation than the human father enters into his child4 ,his creation is not the ,ego1 but the reflection of the ,ego4 ,the ,ego is ,god ,himself1 the infinite ,soul4 ,i believe that of which ,i am conscious through the understanding1 however faintly able to demonstrate ,truth and ,love4 ,do you believe in man8 ,i believe in the individual man1 for ,i understand that man is as definite and eternal as ,god1 and that man is coexistent with ,god1 as being the eternally divine idea4 ,this is demonstrable by the simple appeal to human consciousness4 ,but ,i believe less in the sinner1 wrongly named man4 ,the more ,i understand true humanhood1 the more ,i see it to be sinless1--as ignorant of sin as is the perfect ,maker4 ,to me the reality and substance of being are good1 and nothing else4 ,through the eternal reality of existence ,i reach1 in thought1 a glorified consciousness of the only living ,god and the genuine man4 ,so long as ,i hold evil in consciousness1 ,i cannot be wholly good4 ,you cannot simultaneously serve the mammon of materiality and the ,god of spirituality4 ,there are not two realities of being1 two opposite states of existence4 ,one should appear real to us1 and the other unreal1 or we lose the ,science of being4 ,standing in no basic ,truth1 we make the worse appear the better reason1 and the unreal masquerades as the real1 in our thought4 ,evil is without ,principle4 ,being destitute of ,principle1 it is devoid of ,science4 ,hence it is undemonstrable1 without proof4 ,this gives me a clearer right to call evil a negation1 than to affirm it to be something which ,god sees and knows1 but which ,he straightway commands mortals to shun or relinquish1 lest it destroy them4 ,this notion of the destructibility of ,mind implies the possibility of its defilement2 but how can infinite ,mind be defiled8 ,do you believe in matter8 ,i believe in matter only as ,i believe in evil1 that it is something to be denied and destroyed to human consciousness1 and is unknown to the ,divine4 ,we should watch and pray that we enter not into the temptation of pantheistic belief in matter as sensible mind4 ,we should subjugate it as ,jesus did1 by a dominant understanding of ,spirit4 ,at best1 matter is only a phenomenon of mortal mind1 of which evil is the highest degree2 but really there is no such thing as mortal mind1--though we are compelled to use the phrase in the endeavor to express the underlying thought4 ,in reality there are no material states or stages of consciousness1 and matter has neither ,mind nor sensation4 ,like evil1 it is destitute of ,mind1 for ,mind is ,god4 ,the less consciousness of evil or matter mortals have1 the easier it is for them to evade sin1 sickness1 and death1--which are but states of false belief1--and awake from the troubled dream1 a consciousness which is without ,mind or ,maker4 ,matter and evil cannot be conscious1 and consciousness should not be evil4 ,adopt this rule of ,science1 and you will discover the material origin1 growth1 maturity1 and death of sinners1 as the history of man1 disappears1 and the everlasting facts of being appear1 wherein man is the reflection of immutable good4 ,reasoning from false premises1--that ,life is material1 that immortal ,soul is sinful1 and hence that sin is eternal1--the reality of being is neither seen1 felt1 heard1 nor understood4 ,human philosophy and human reason can never make one hair white or black1 except in belief2 whereas the demonstration of ,god1 as in ,christian ,science1 is gained through ,christ as perfect manhood4 ,in pantheism the world is bereft of its ,god1 whose place is ill supplied by the pretentious usurpation1 by matter1 of the heavenly sovereignty4 ,what say you of woman8 ,man is the generic term for all humanity4 ,woman is the highest species of man1 and this word is the generic term for all women2 but not one of all these individualities is an ,eve or an ,adam4 ,they have none of them lost their harmonious state1 in the economy of ,god's wisdom and government4 ,the ,ego is divine consciousness1 eternally radiating throughout all space in the idea of ,god1 good1 and not of ,his opposite1 evil4 ,the ,ego is revealed as ,father1 ,son1 and ,holy ,ghost2 but the full ,truth is found only in divine ,science1 where we see ,god as ,life1 ,truth1 and ,love4 ,in the scientific relation of man to ,god1 man is reflected not as human soul1 but as the divine ideal1 whose ,soul is not in body1 but is ,god1--the divine ,principle of man4 ,hence ,soul is sinless and immortal1 in contradistinction to the supposition that there can be sinful souls or immortal sinners4 ,this ,science of ,god and man is the ,holy ,ghost1 which reveals and sustains the unbroken and eternal harmony of both ,god and the universe4 ,it is the kingdom of heaven1 the ever-present reign of harmony1 already with us4 ,hence the need that human consciousness should become divine1 in the coincidence of ,god and man1 in contradistinction to the false consciousness of both good and evil1 ,god and devil1--of man separated from his ,maker4 ,this is the precious redemption of soul1 as mortal sense1 through ,christ's immortal sense of ,truth1 which presents ,truth's spiritual idea1 man and woman4 ,what say you of evil8 ,god is not the so-called ego of evil2 for evil1 as a supposition1 is the father of itself1--of the material world1 the flesh1 and the devil4 ,from this falsehood arise the self-destroying elements of this world1 its unkind forces1 its tempests1 lightnings1 earthquakes1 poisons1 rabid beasts1 fatal reptiles1 and mortals4 ,why are earth and mortals so elaborate in beauty1 color1 and form1 if ,god has no part in them8 ,by the law of opposites4 ,the most beautiful blossom is often poisonous1 and the most beautiful mansion is sometimes the home of vice4 ,the senses1 not ,god1 ,soul1 form the condition of beautiful evil1 and the supposed modes of self-conscious matter1 which make a beautiful lie4 ,now a lie takes its pattern from ,truth1 by reversing ,truth4 ,so evil and all its forms are inverted good4 ,god never made them2 but the lie must say ,he made them1 or it would not be evil4 ,being a lie1 it would be truthful to call itself a lie2 and by calling the knowledge of evil good1 and greatly to be desired1 it constitutes the lie an evil4 ,the reality and individuality of man are good and ,god-made1 and they are here to be seen and demonstrated2 it is only the evil belief that renders them obscure4 ,matter and evil are anti-,christian1 the antipodes of ,science4 ,to say that ,mind is material1 or that evil is ,mind1 is a misapprehension of being1--a mistake which will die of its own delusion2 for being self-contradictory1 it is also self-destructive4 ,the harmony of man's being is not built on such false foundations1 which are no more logical1 philosophical1 or scientific than would be the assertion that the rule of addition is the rule of subtraction1 and that sums done under both rules would have one quotient4 ,man's individuality is not a mortal mind or sinner2 or else he has lost his true individuality as a perfect child of ,god4 ,man's ,father is not a mortal mind and a sinner2 or else the immortal and unerring ,mind1 ,god1 is not his ,father2 but ,god is man's origin and loving ,father1 hence that saying of ,jesus1 ,call no man your father upon the earth3 for one is your ,father1 which is in heaven4 ,the bright gold of ,truth is dimmed by the doctrine of mind in matter4 ,to say there is a false claim1 called sickness1 is to admit all there is of sickness2 for it is nothing but a false claim4 ,to be healed1 one must lose sight of a false claim4 ,if the claim be present to the thought1 then disease becomes as tangible as any reality4 ,to regard sickness as a false claim1 is to abate the fear of it2 but this does not destroy the so-called fact of the claim4 ,in order to be whole1 we must be insensible to every claim of error4 ,as with sickness1 so is it with sin4 ,to admit that sin has any claim whatever1 just or unjust1 is to admit a dangerous fact4 ,hence the fact must be denied2 for if sin's claim be allowed in any degree1 then sin destroys the at-one-ment1 or oneness with ,god1--a unity which sin recognizes as its most potent and deadly enemy4 ,if ,god knows sin1 even as a false claimant1 then acquaintance with that claimant becomes legitimate to mortals1 and this knowledge would not be forbidden2 but ,god forbade man to know evil at the very beginning1 when ,satan held it up before man as something desirable and a distinct addition to human wisdom1 because the knowledge of evil would make man a god1--a representation that ,god both knew and admitted the dignity of evil4 ,which is right1--,god1 who condemned the knowledge of sin and disowned its acquaintance1 or the serpent1 who pushed that claim with the glittering audacity of diabolical and sinuous logic8 ,suffering from ,others' ,thoughts ,jesus accepted the one fact whereby alone the rule of ,life can be demonstrated1--namely1 that there is no death4 ,in his real self he bore no infirmities4 ,though a man of sorrows1 and acquainted with grief1 as ,isaiah says of him1 he bore not his sins1 but ours1 in his own body on the tree4 ,he was bruised for our iniquities2 444 and with his stripes we are healed4 ,he was the ,way-shower2 and ,christian ,scientists who would demonstrate the way must keep close to his path1 that they may win the prize4 ,the way1 in the flesh1 is the suffering which leads out of the flesh4 ,the way1 in ,spirit1 is the way of ,life1 ,truth1 and ,love1 redeeming us from the false sense of the flesh and the wounds it bears4 ,this threefold ,messiah reveals the self-destroying ways of error and the life-giving way of ,truth4 ,job's faith and hope gained him the assurance that the so-called sufferings of the flesh are unreal4 ,we shall learn how false are the pleasures and pains of material sense1 and behold the truth of being1 as expressed in his conviction1 ,yet in my flesh shall ,i see ,god2 that is1 ,now and here shall ,i behold ,god1 divine ,love4 ,the chaos of mortal mind is made the stepping-stone to the cosmos of immortal ,mind4 ,if ,jesus suffered1 as the ,scriptures declare1 it must have been from the mentality of others2 since all suffering comes from mind1 not from matter1 and there could be no sin or suffering in the ,mind which is ,god4 ,not his own sins1 but the sins of the world1 crucified the ,lord of glory1 and put him to an open shame4 ,holding a quickened sense of false environment1 and suffering from mentality in opposition to ,truth1 are significant of that state of mind which the actual understanding of ,christian ,science first eliminates and then destroys4 ,in the divine order of ,science every follower of ,christ shares his cup of sorrows4 ,he also suffereth in the flesh1 and from the mentality which opposes the law of ,spirit2 but the divine law is supreme1 for it freeth him from the law of sin and death4 ,prophets and apostles suffered from the thoughts of others4 ,their conscious being was not fully exempt from physicality and the sense of sin4 ,until he awakes from his delusion1 he suffers least from sin who is a hardened sinner4 ,the hypocrite's affections must first be made to fret in their chains2 and the pangs of hell must lay hold of him ere he can change from flesh to ,spirit1 become acquainted with that ,love which is without dissimulation and endureth all things4 ,such mental conditions as ingratitude1 lust1 malice1 hate1 constitute the miasma of earth4 ,more obnoxious than ,chinese stenchpots are these dispositions which offend the spiritual sense4 ,anatomically considered1 the design of the material senses is to warn mortals of the approach of danger by the pain they feel and occasion2 but as this sense disappears it foresees the impending doom and foretells the pain4 ,man's refuge is in spirituality1 under the shadow of the ,almighty4 ,the cross is the central emblem of human history4 ,without it there is neither temptation nor glory4 ,when ,jesus turned and said1 ,who hath touched me8 he must have felt the influence of the woman's thought2 for it is written that he felt that virtue had gone out of him4 ,his pure consciousness was discriminating1 and rendered this infallible verdict2 but he neither held her error by affinity nor by infirmity1 for it was detected and dismissed4 ,this gospel of suffering brought life and bliss4 ,this is earth's ,bethel in stone1--its pillow1 supporting the ladder which reaches heaven4 ,suffering was the confirmation of ,paul's faith4 ,through a thorn in the flesh he learned that spiritual grace was sufficient for him4 ,peter rejoiced that he was found worthy to suffer for ,christ2 because to suffer with him is to reign with him4 ,sorrow is the harbinger of joy4 ,mortal throes of anguish forward the birth of immortal being2 but divine ,science wipes away all tears4 ,the only conscious existence in the flesh is error of some sort1--sin1 pain1 death1--a false sense of life and happiness4 ,mortals1 if at ease in so-called existence1 are in their native element of error1 and must become dis-eased1 dis-quieted1 before error is annihilated4 ,jesus walked with bleeding feet the thorny earth-road1 treading the winepress alone4 ,his persecutors said mockingly1 ,save thyself1 and come down from the cross4 ,this was the very thing he was doing1 coming down from the cross1 saving himself after the manner that he had taught1 by the law of ,spirit's supremacy2 and this was done through what is humanly called agony4 ,even the ice-bound hypocrite melts in fervent heat1 before he apprehends ,christ as the way4 ,the ,master's sublime triumph over all mortal mentality was immortality's goal4 ,he was too wise not to be willing to test the full compass of human woe1 being in all points tempted like as we are1 yet without sin4 ,thus the absolute unreality of sin1 sickness1 and death was revealed1--a revelation that beams on mortal sense as the midnight sun shines over the ,polar ,sea4 ,the ,saviour's ,mission ,if there is no reality in evil1 why did the ,messiah come to the world1 and from what evils was it his purpose to save humankind8 ,how1 indeed1 is he a ,saviour1 if the evils from which he saves are nonentities8 ,jesus came to earth2 but the ,christ 7that is1 the divine idea of the divine ,principle which made heaven and earth7 was never absent from the earth and heaven2 hence the phraseology of ,jesus1 who spoke of the ,christ as one who came down from heaven1 yet as the ,son of man which is in heaven4 7,john iii4 #ac47 ,by this we understand ,christ to be the divine idea brought to the flesh in the son of ,mary4 ,salvation is as eternal as ,god4 ,to mortal thought ,jesus appeared as a child1 and grew to manhood1 to suffer before ,pilate and on ,calvary1 because he could reach and teach mankind only through this conformity to mortal conditions2 but ,soul never saw the ,saviour come and go1 because the divine idea is always present4 ,jesus came to rescue men from these very illusions to which he seemed to conform3 from the illusion which calls sin real1 and man a sinner1 needing a ,saviour2 the illusion which calls sickness real1 and man an invalid1 needing a physician2 the illusion that death is as real as ,life4 ,from such thoughts--mortal inventions1 one and all--,christ ,jesus came to save men1 through ever-present and eternal good4 ,mortal man is a kingdom divided against itself4 ,with the same breath he articulates truth and error4 ,we say that ,god is ,all1 and there is none beside ,him1 and then talk of sin and sinners as real4 ,we call ,god omnipotent and omnipresent1 and then conjure up1 from the dark abyss of nothingness1 a powerful presence named evil4 ,we say that harmony is real1 and inharmony is its opposite1 and therefore unreal2 yet we descant upon sickness1 sin1 and death as realities4 ,with the tongue bless we ,god1 even the ,father2 and therewith curse we men1 who are made after the similitude human concept of ,god4 ,out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing4 ,my brethren1 these things ought not so to be4 7,james iii4 #i1 #aj47 ,mortals are free moral agents1 to choose whom they would serve4 ,if ,god1 then let them serve ,him1 and ,he will be unto them ,all-in-all4 ,if ,god is ever present1 ,he is neither absent from ,himself nor from the universe4 ,without ,him1 the universe would disappear1 and space1 substance1 and immortality be lost4 ,st4 ,paul says1 ,and if ,christ be not raised1 your faith is vain2 ye are yet in your sins4 7#a ,corinthians xv4 #ag47 ,christ cannot come to mortal and material sense1 which sees not ,god4 ,this false sense of substance must yield to ,his eternal presence1 and so dissolve4 ,rising above the false1 to the true evidence of ,life1 is the resurrection that takes hold of eternal ,truth4 ,coming and going belong to mortal consciousness4 ,god is the same yesterday1 and to-day1 and forever4 ,to material sense1 ,jesus first appeared as a helpless human babe2 but to immortal and spiritual vision he was one with the ,father1 even the eternal idea of ,god1 that was--and is--neither young nor old1 neither dead nor risen4 ,the mutations of mortal sense are the evening and the morning of human thought1--the twilight and dawn of earthly vision1 which precedeth the nightless radiance of divine ,life4 ,human perception1 advancing toward the apprehension of its nothingness1 halts1 retreats1 and again goes forward2 but the divine ,principle and ,spirit and spiritual man are unchangeable1--neither advancing1 retreating1 nor halting4 ,our highest sense of infinite good in this mortal sphere is but the sign and symbol1 not the substance of good4 ,only faith and a feeble understanding make the earthly acme of human sense4 ,the life which ,i now live in the flesh ,i live by the faith of the ,son of ,god4 7,galatians ii4 #bj47 ,christian ,science is both demonstration and fruition1 but how attenuated are our demonstration and realization of this ,science6 ,truth1 in divine ,science1 is the stepping-stone to the understanding of ,god2 but the broken and contrite heart soonest discerns this truth1 even as the helpless sick are soonest healed by it4 ,invalids say1 ,i have recovered from sickness2 when the fact really remains1 in divine ,science1 that they never were sick4 ,the ,christian saith1 ,christ 7,god7 died for me1 and came to save me2 yet ,god dies not1 and is the ever-presence that neither comes nor goes1 and man is forever ,his image and likeness4 ,the things which are seen are temporal2 but the things which are not seen are eternal4 7#b ,corinthians iv4 #ah47 ,this is the mystery of godliness--that ,god1 good1 is never absent1 and there is none beside good4 ,mortals can understand this only as they reach the ,life of good1 and learn that there is no ,life in evil4 ,then shall it appear that the true ideal of omnipotent and ever-present good is an ideal wherein and wherefor there is no evil4 ,sin exists only as a sense1 and not as ,soul4 ,destroy this sense of sin1 and sin disappears4 ,sickness1 sin1 or death is a false sense of ,life and good4 ,destroy this trinity of error1 and you find ,truth4 ,in ,science1 ,christ never died4 ,in material sense ,jesus died1 and lived4 ,the fleshly ,jesus seemed to die1 though he did not4 ,the ,truth or ,life in divine ,science--undisturbed by human error1 sin1 and death--saith forever1 ,i am the living ,god1 and man is ,my idea1 never in matter1 nor resurrected from it4 ,why seek ye the living among the dead8 ,he is not here1 but is risen4 7,luke xxiv4 #e1 #f47 ,mortal sense1 confining itself to matter1 is all that can be buried or resurrected4 ,mary had risen to discern faintly ,god's ever-presence1 and that of ,his idea1 man2 but her mortal sense1 reversing ,science and spiritual understanding1 interpreted this appearing as a risen ,christ4 ,the ,i ,,am was neither buried nor resurrected4 ,the ,way1 the ,truth1 and the ,life were never absent for a moment4 ,this trinity of ,love lives and reigns forever4 ,its kingdom1 not apparent to material sense1 never disappeared to spiritual sense1 but remained forever in the ,science of being4 ,the so-called appearing1 disappearing1 and reappearing of ever-presence1 in whom is no variableness or shadow of turning1 is the false human sense of that light which shineth in darkness1 and the darkness comprehendeth it not4 ,summary ,all that is1 ,god created4 ,if sin has any pretense of existence1 ,god is responsible therefor2 but there is no reality in sin1 for ,god can no more behold it1 or acknowledge it1 than the sun can coexist with darkness4 ,to build the individual spiritual sense1 conscious of only health1 holiness1 and heaven1 on the foundations of an eternal ,mind which is conscious of sickness1 sin1 and death1 is a moral impossibility2 for other foundation can no man lay than that is laid4 7#a ,corinthians iii4 #aa47 ,the nearer we approximate to such a ,mind1 even if it were 7or could be7 ,god1 the more real those mind-pictures would become to us2 until the hope of ever eluding their dread presence must yield to despair1 and the haunting sense of evil forever accompany our being4 ,mortals may climb the smooth glaciers1 leap the dark fissures1 scale the treacherous ice1 and stand on the summit of ,mont ,blanc2 but they can never turn back what ,deity knoweth1 nor escape from identification with what dwelleth in the eternal ,mind4
