ethical cobbling4 ,in the ,gospel1 we move into a new world and under a new scheme4 ,the ,gospel does not classify with other schemes of amelioration4 ,this accords with our thought of the methods of ,christ4 ,the way to meet that which is wrong1 is to meet it as a wrong4 ,we shall not do well to ameliorate it4 ,if we may not expect those who have been raised amid prejudices and ignorance to be leaders for the absolute rectitude of things1 those who have not lived where this excuse is available should be the leaders4 ,if some do not lead1 none will follow4 ,where principles were at stake1 ,christ never gave way to prejudices4 ,he never yielded to that which was in itself wrong4 ,if those to whom he ministered could not come up to his standard1 then he waited1 but he never compromised4 accorded other foreigners4 ,the missions of the ,a4,m4,a4 on the ,pacific ,coast are most fruitful and hopeful1 and1 since these foreigners return to ,china1 there is an interblending of ,home and ,foreign ,missions here1 that is full of promise4 ,q4 ,are the missions of the ,a4,m4,a4 in the ,south1 ,foreign ,missions8 ,a4 ,they are not1 though they have been successful in exciting interest for ,africa among the students of their schools4 ,some of these are now foreign missionaries2 others are preparing to go2 but the missions of the ,a4,m4,a4 in the broadest sense are ,home ,missions1 for they minister to white and black as to citizens of a common country1 who alike need the ,gospel4 ,the ,a4,m4,a4 is planting white churches 7so called7 every year1 and has added several this year1 though none of them would refuse membership to a man because he is black1 and is planting colored churches 7so called71 none of which should be excluded from ,state ,associations merely because of color4 ,q4 ,should the missions of the ,a4,m4,a4 be called ,foreign ,missions because its schools and churches cannot win the co-operation of the ,christians among whom they live8 ,a4 ,they did not at once win the co-operation of ,christians among whom they went1 but confidence has been growing with the years until the cases are exceptional where they do not have the co-operation of enlightened and broad-minded ,christians4 ,in most cases1 the schools and churches of the ,a4,m4,a4 have won both confidence and gratitude throughout the ,south4 ,southern men are among the trustees of its institutions1 and everywhere its ,field ,superintendents and ,secretaries are greeted with cordiality4 ,a prominent editor of a ,southern political paper--white and democratic--testifies this month3 ,yours is the most practical missionary work ever undertaken by a ,christian body1 and should have the hearty and unstinted support of all ,christians4 ,the cases are few where good will does not exist between its teachers and ministers and the white people among whom they live4 ,q4 ,does not social ostracism show that the white teacher is engaged in a ,foreign ,mission8 ,a4 ,social ostracism is gradually giving way among the more intelligent ,christian people4 ,nothing1 however1 dies so hard as prejudice1 and nothing is so cruel2 but missions do not cease to be ,home ,missions1 because they may be where there is sinful prejudice and dense ignorance4 ,q4 ,what would be ,foreign ,missions in the ,south8 ,a4 ,missions in the ,south which would treat an entire race as foreigners and aliens because in ,god's wisdom he has seen fit to make them black1 would be foreign to the spirit of the ,gospel3 ,for ,he is our peace who hath made both one1 and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us4 ,through ,him1 we both have access by one ,spirit unto the ,father4 ,now1 therefore1 ye are no more strangers and foreigners1 but fellow citizens with the saints and of the general household of ,god1 and built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets1 ,jesus ,christ himself being the chief corner stone2 in whom all the building1 fitly framed together1 groweth into a holy temple in the ,lord4 ,missions in the ,south which exclude pastors and delegates from ,associations and ,conferences1 would be foreign to the ,gospel4 ,missions in the ,south founded upon an aristocracy of skin1 would be foreign to the spirit of the ,gospel4 ,missions which would preach against caste in ,india1 and perpetuate it in ,america1 would be foreign to the methods of ,christ1 and to ,christian methods in foreign lands4 ,q4 ,does the ,a4,m4,a4 believe in mixed churches of white and black people8 ,a4 ,the ,a4,m4,a4 does not regard it as at all probable that such churches will exist to any great extent4 ,race tastes and race affiliations will make for churches essentially white and essentially black4 ,but to close the door on any ,christian is in so far to make it an unchristian church4 ,to go into the ,south and establish white churches from which1 whether by a formal law or by an unwritten but self-forcing edict1 men are excluded because ,god made them black1 is to deny one of the fundamental tenets of ,christ4 ,there is no need to attempt to corral all men of all races in one enclosure1 but for any church1 especially a church of the ,puritans1 to enter upon a missionary work in the ,south and initiate it by refusing to fellowship a black man because he is black1 is to apostatize from the faith in order to get a chance to preach the faith4 ,the doors of every ,christian church ought to stand wide open to men of every race and color1 and in all representative bodies these churches should be one4 ,q4 ,is this the position of the ,roman ,catholic ,church in its ,southern work8 ,a4 ,it is3 ,the ,roman ,catholic ,church would not for a moment recognize any color-line in its assemblies or priesthood4 ,q4 ,does the ,a4,m4,a4 believe in the social equality of the races8 ,a4 ,the ,a4,m4,a4 has never seen any social equality anywhere1 and believes and teaches nothing about it4 ,it believes in the ,fatherhood of ,god and the brotherhood of man4 ,q4 ,is the ,a4,m4,a4 agitating the color-line question8 ,a4 ,it is not4 ,it always has proclaimed its principles for the interests of the oppressed1 and always has championed the cause of ,god's poor1 pleading for the right because it is right4 ,q4 ,why is the ,a4,m4,a4 in the ,south doing its work in schools and churches among white and black8 ,a4 ,because the ,lord has said2 ,behold1 ,i have set before thee an open door1 and no man can shut it4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,cars1 ,,the ,,church1 ,,the ,,courts4 ,our esteemed brother1 ,rev4 ,g4,c4 ,rowe1 pastor of the ,plymouth ,congregational ,church1 ,charleston1 ,s4,c41 and his associates1 on their return from the meeting of the ,joint ,committee on the union of the ,georgia ,association and the ,georgia ,conference1 were forcibly transferred to an inferior car on the ,georgia ,railroad4 ,they were not driven from the train1 they were allowed to ride1 and the car in which they rode was connected with the cars containing the white passengers4 ,they were simply separated from the others and that only because they were colored persons4 ,the reception these honored ministers of ,christ met in the ,joint ,committee was very much of the same sort4 ,the white brethren did not deny them their place in the church--nay1 the two bodies1 white and colored1 were to be connected together1 but these colored brethren were to be kept separate and that only because they were colored persons4 ,an appeal will be made to the courts1 but the interesting question is3 which will be first to recognize the equal manhood of the colored man-- the cars1 the courts or the church8 ,would it not be a shame to the church and a dishonor to the ,christian name if the church should be the last8 99 99 99 99 99 ,speaking of the race problem1 in his baccalaureate sermon at ,vanderbilt ,university1 recently1 ,bishop ,galloway1 of ,mississippi1 of the ,methodist ,church1 ,south1 startled his hearers by the following vigorous declaration3 ,it is a travesty on religion1 this disposition to canonize missionaries who go to the dark continent1 while we have nothing but social ostracism for the white teacher who is doing a work no less noble at home4 ,the solution to the race problem rests with the white people who live among the blacks1 and who are willing to become their teachers in a missionary spirit4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,work ,,of ,,the ,,american ,,missionary ,,association ,,and ,,foreign ,,missions4 ,,by ,,rev4 ,,frank ,b4 ,,jenkins4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association has done both home and foreign missionary work4 ,there is nothing in its constitution or traditions to prevent its doing the same again4 ,providence1 however1 seems to indicate clearly that its work at present be within the ,united ,states4 ,while in this sense it does home missionary work1 the peculiar conditions of the people among whom it mostly labors require largely the methods of foreign missions4 ,it must supply the school1 as well as the church2 industrial training as well as that which is intellectual and moral4 ,it must create a native ministry and develop native workers of all kinds4 ,in fact1 it would be hard to find on foreign mission fields a single kind of activity which is not duplicated in the fields of the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,home missions aid foreign missions by creating the conditions of more income and more missionaries for foreign fields4 ,the work of this ,association has done this already to some extent2 without doubt it is to do it to a far greater extent in the future4 ,in taking people from the ignorance and poverty of slavery and savagery1 it could not be expected to form them at once into large givers or efficient workers for foreign fields2 but who can say1 after the marvels of the past twenty-four years1 what the future shall show1 when the coming millions shall arise and1 out of gratitude for what they have received1 give of their increasing means and send forth their sons and daughters to tell the glad story of freedom1 truth and love4 ,it has been a favorite idea of many that the ,negroes of ,america should evangelize ,africa4 ,perhaps some have been disappointed that so few of them have gone to ,africa as missionaries2 but such1 ,i am sure1 have failed fully to consider the facts4 ,a people who had received only the degrading tuition of slavery could not produce at once many who should have the reliable qualities and the intellectual and moral training needed for the responsible and1 to a large extent1 the unsuperintended work of a foreign missionary4 ,then1 every capable preacher1 teacher and leader has been needed in a hundred places at home4 ,they could scarcely be justified in leaving their own brothers and sisters in heathenism and without the truth within their reach1 to go to the heathen abroad4 ,yet a few have gone forth and proved themselves capable1 faithful and successful4 ,a former slave of ,jefferson ,davis is not only a successful missionary in ,africa1 but has proved himself such a level-headed man that he has been chosen treasurer of one of the missions of the ,american ,board4 ,such as he are an earnest of what shall be1 when the colored people shall be more fully evangelized and the appeal for ,africa can be made strong to their hearts and consciences4 ,then there will be such a going forth as will astonish the ,christian ,church4 ,the bearing of the work for the one hundred thousand ,chinese in this country on foreign missions can be clearly seen4 ,christian work for them is missionary work for ,china--it sends them back to become missionaries to their native land4 ,the fruitfulness of this work for foreign missions has been fully demonstrated4 ,the possibilities of the influence of the evangelization of the ,indians on foreign missions is a topic which ,i do not remember having seen or heard mentioned4 ,yet it seems to me worth thinking about4 ,mexico has four million ,indians2 ,central ,america1 one million five hundred thousand1 and ,south ,america seven million4 ,here is a foreign mission field of twelve and a half million souls4 ,how can it be otherwise than that1 when once the ,indians of our land shall come to have and appreciate the blessings of a ,christian civilization1 their hearts shall be stirred by the needs of their brethren according to the flesh1 and that they will go to them with the gospel story8 ,there remains one other field--the whites of the ,south and especially the ,mountain ,whites4 ,as a class1 they are poor1 ignorant and needy in every way--materially1 intellectually1 morally and spiritually1 but they are not the poor1 white trash of the ,south4 ,as good blood flows in their veins as in the veins of the ,northern people4 ,a wrong start and their surroundings have made them what they are4 ,give them schools and pure and enlightened churches and they will awake into new life as fast as any people ever did4 ,they will show in years what missionary work can usually show only in decades4 ,in ,williamsburg ,academy1 ,ky41 nearly every boy in the higher classes is expecting to prepare for the ministry1 and that school is only a little over half a dozen years old and is the first one opened in our mountain work4 ,give these mountain boys and girls a chance1 and the people who gave the nation a ,lincoln will give it ministers and missionaries1 not only for the seven mountain ,states1 but also for other home mission fields and for foreign lands4 ,if the ,congregational churches will listen to the call of ,christ and appreciate the opportunity which he has placed before them1 there may be in these mountains1 filled with their marvellous mineral wealth1 ,congregational churches which shall be not only self-supporting1 but give generously for the advancement of ,christ's kingdom throughout the earth4 ,the most generous giver ,i know1 is a native of the mountains and a member of one of our missionary churches4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,rome ,,and ,,the ,,negro4 ,one of our most interesting exchanges is an ,illustrated ,roman ,catholic ,quarterly edited and published by the ,fathers of ,st4 ,joseph's ,missionary ,society of the ,sacred ,heart1 its ,record of ,missions among the ,colored ,people of the ,united ,states4 ,we need not say that we have no sympathy with ,romanism and its errors1 nor with the ,missionary ,society of the ,sacred ,heart1 and its efforts to plant ,romanism among the colored people of the ,south4 ,we can1 however1 but admire the fidelity of the church to its doctrines1 and the ,christian example it gives to all missionary societies in its recognition of man as man4 ,the quotations which we make from the ,roman ,catholic ,quarterly will account for the strong hold that ,romanism is beginning to secure upon the negro race4 ,the following1 for example1 is a ,roman ,catholic tribute to ,john ,brown3 ,on the #bnd of ,december next1 thirty years will have passed since ,john ,brown1 in his sixtieth winter1 ascended the scaffold and gave his life for the colored race4 ,connecticut gave the hero birth--from heroes2 ,new ,york1 in her ,adirondack recesses1 developed in him that spirit of liberty which ,ohio had nurtured1 and is forever honored by his grave2 while ,virginia1 building better than she knew1 bestowed the martyr's crown4 ,it was necessary that one man should die for the people 7,john xviii1 #ad71 and ,god arranged that he who is likewise one of the great benefactors of the human race as well as of his native land should crimson and beautify with his blood the soil that gave a cradle and a tomb to the ,father of his ,country4 ,grand indeed is the greatness of the rock-ribbed ,adirondacks where ,john ,brown lived1 prayed1 thought out his great life-thought1 and made his first trials in the work of emancipation1 but grander is the stone there that marks the grave of him whose mighty spirit is still marching on2 for the greatness of that soul invests the tomb with moral grandeur1 and calls all the astonishing magnificence of unintelligent creation poor4 ,fair indeed are the banks of the ,shenandoah1 and beautiful the landscape on which the dying eyes of the hero rested1 but more lovely far the death of him and of his sons and comrades1--even in death they were not divided 7#bnd ,kings i1 #ai71 because the most beautiful thing in the world or out of it is love1 and he and they died of love for their brethren1 ,god's children4 ,it is truly fitting1 therefore1 that they who were rescued by him them1 whenever it rains2 and it is a sight which makes one long for better accommodations1 that more efficient work may be done1 writes this self-sacrificing professor in a note just received4 ,in one house1 he found a family of white children1 all of them very ignorant1 and1 so far as he was able to discover1 there was not a single book of any kind in the cabin4 ,he invited the children to ,sunday-school1 where1 like ,robert ,raikes1 he teaches reading and spelling as well as the ,bible1 but the mother indignantly refused1 saying that she didn't let her children go to school with ,niggers6 ,there are many evidences of heroic sacrifice on the part of the people among whom we labor1 that one runs across in such a trip as this4 ,here is one3 ,a small church in ,alabama has recently voted to pay fifty dollars per month of their pastor's salary1 that they may become self-supporting1 and so let the funds which they have received go to other more needy fields4 ,there are seventy-five persons in this church who might be termed paying members2 of all these1 the pastor informed me1 not more than fifteen receive over a dollar per day2 sixty receive less than this4 ,they pay1 on an average1 ten dollars per month for rent2 there are twenty-six working-days to the month1 and they often lose at least five of these1 on account of weather or lack of work1 making an income of only twenty-one dollars per month4 ,ten dollars going for rent1 leaves but eleven dollars for the support of the family4 ,pretty heroic economy that6 ,the ,annual ,meeting of the ,dakota ,mission1 had run away1 and that he had left ,jaran about half way4 ,jaran's father did not believe the story1 and came back to us1 ten miles1 to see if it were true4 ,this made us very anxious1 but nothing could be done but to await the issue4 ,it seemed as if a series of unfortunate mistakes had combined to bring about this result2 and to make everything still more puzzling1 ,mr4 ,riggs1 our superintendent1 was away4 ,he reached home that evening1 and the next morning sent the steward to learn the fate of the little runaway4 ,he went on until he found the little boy's cap and mittens1 and the place where he had evidently lain all night4 ,it was a bitter night1 and we knew that he could not possibly have survived1 in his exhausted condition1 and not knowing how to protect himself1 even if he had had the means for so doing4 ,this1 in itself1 was a very bitter experience for us1 but the worst was yet to come4 ,mr4 ,riggs found it impossible to get an ,indian to go to the assistance of these poor people4 ,they were all afraid4 ,rumors were afloat that the father was going to shoot anyone connected in any way with the school1 ,indian or white4 ,when an ,indian is sorrow-stricken over the death of a friend or relative1 he alleviates his suffering by killing some one else4 ,after the little boy was buried1 the family came to the school4 ,the old grandmother brought the clothes he had on when found--and which they had cut off1--spread them out before ,mr4 ,riggs1 and reproached him for sending a little boy out into a storm so insufficiently clad2 to which ,mr4 ,riggs replied that we had no idea he was going out into the storm1 that he was dressed for the house1 and had we known he was going on a journey1 he would have been dressed for it4 ,she would not be pacified1 however1 and after bitterly reproaching ,mr4 ,riggs for the death of her grandson1 she demanded pay for it1 as if money would make up to them his loss4 ,that afternoon1 at the woman's meeting1 we learned that they had given away everything they possessed1 furniture1 clothing1 bedding1 dishes1 and were absolutely destitute of the barest necessities of life4 ,this is one of their customs4 ,they reason thus3 ,our child is dead2 our hearts are sad2 life has no longer any attractions2 take all we have4 ,the ,christian ,indian women in our church each gave something out of her little property to help these poor heathen people1 who in their superstitious ignorance had made their lot so wretched4 ,taking this1 they returned home and demanded of the family of the other poor boy a cow in payment for the death of their child4 ,and there came to me this question3 ,is it possible that in the midst of this beautiful free land of ours1 there lives a people so densely ignorant1 so darkly superstitious1 sunk so low in heathenism1 as this incident shows8 ,and this is only one of many such incidents4 ,may ,god help us when such things are possible in a ,christian land4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,chinese4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,three ,,days ,,of ,,evangelistic ,,work ,,at ,,petaluma4 ,,by ,,jee ,,gam4 ,i reached ,petaluma a little while before school began4 ,the scholars soon poured in and the attendance was the largest the school ever had4 ,in order to have a little preaching service1 we hurried through the lessons4 ,at the conclusion of school1 two hymns were sung4 ,i then preached to them of ,jesus4 ,they all listened very attentively and appeared interested4 ,at the close1 ,i asked them to come again the next evening and bring their friends4 ,to my great surprise1 the next evening not only all the scholars came1 but many outsiders2 some of these had years ago attended our school for some little time1 but the majority of them had never been inside our mission4 ,i was informed1 after the meeting1 that five or six of them were very highly educated in ,chinese1 and that they were chief officers of the ,chinese ,branch ,masonic ,society in ,petaluma4 ,i thought they came simply for curiosity and perhaps for argument4 ,just before the meeting commenced1 ,i went into my room1 knelt down and said to ,god3 ,oh ,lord1 ,thou art the ,almighty ,god1 ,thou knowest the motives of those who have come to this meeting2 ,thou knowest ,i am very weak4 ,i can do nothing without ,thy help1 so ,i beseech ,thee to make me a good agent in ,thy hand4 ,give me the right word to speak1 fill me with power4 ,i arose from prayer and felt that ,god was with me4 ,i went into the meeting and announced my subject4 ,it was on ,daniel being cast into the lions' den4 ,i noticed the marked interest they all seemed to feel4 ,at the close1 ,i again asked all present to come the next evening 7,sunday evening7 and bring more friends4 ,the ,sabbath evening meeting came4 ,sunday-school began at six o'clock4 ,not only the scholars and every one of the outsiders who had attended the meeting of the night before came1 but many others besides1 so that we had to bring in extra benches1 and yet we lacked room4 ,my subject this evening was ,daniel1 third chapter1 the three ,hebrew children cast into the fiery furnace1 being a continuation of my ,bible reading of the previous evening4 ,i endeavored to bring home to my countrymen three things3 #ast4--,that this was the true ,god1 and he was the ,supreme ,ruler mentioned by our ,confucius1 ,mencius and other sages4 #b;d4--,he was all-powerful and not like the golden image which ,nebuchadnezzar had set up1 nor like the idols that we ,chinese serve4 #c;d4--,he was able to save all those that put their trust in ,him4 ,he is just as able and as willing to save us to-day as ,he was when ,he saved ,daniel and his three countrymen1 provided we are willing to trust in ,him1 as these men did1 for ,he is the same yesterday1 to-day and forever4 ,the golden image could not protect from the dangers of the fire the king's mighty men that cast ,shadrach1 ,meshach and ,abednego into the furnace4 ,and why8 ,because it was simply an image1 the work of men's hands4 ,and now1 what are our ,chinese idols8 ,are not they the works of men's hands too8 ,we all say that they are true gods and are very powerful2 yet1 you all well know that we have a common saying3 ,though the gods are powerful1 yet they are not able to protect an unfortunate man4 ,so let us seek1 believe and worship the only true ,god1 and ,him alone4 ,i had to come away the next day1 and felt that perhaps ,i might never have another chance to speak to them4 ,the opportunity1 too1 was one of the best that any preacher could desire1 for they all seemed hungering for more of the truth4 ,therefore ,i went on to tell them that the ,son of ,god whom ,nebuchadnezzar saw in the fiery furnace was this same ,jesus that we ,christians believe in and preach to-day4 ,at the conclusion1 ,i urged all to accept ,him as their ,saviour4 ,i said3 ,of course ,i cannot tell you all about ,jesus in one evening1 for nearly every one of the thirty-nine books of the ,old ,testament and every one of the twenty-seven books of the ,new ,testament speak of ,jesus1--his birth1 his life1 his teaching4 ,all these you can find out by reading the ,chinese translation of the ,bible1 and therefore we earnestly invite you all to read it for yourselves4 ,one of our proverbs says3 ',genuine gold never fears the hot furnace fire4' ,so the ,bible never fears examination4 ,the more you try it1 the truer you will find it to be4 ,you are all acquainted with the ways of the ,tanist priests4 ,they deceive the people and you all know their doctrines and tricks will not bear inspection4 ,for example1 the manner in which they pretend to catch demons2 they go to the house with their gongs1 cymbals1 etc41 and pretend to catch the ghost and place him in a jar4 ,after they have caught him1 they will not allow you to open the jar to view him4 ,why8 ,the ,bible you see is as true as the broad daylight1 for it has borne the inspection of centuries4 ,the doctrines of the ,christian boy1 and he wanted us to do just what we thought best4 ,our pastor1 ,dr4 ,hutchins1 attended the funeral with us and made some very touching remarks4 ,we had singing by the ,christian brethren and others who were there4 ,the uncle was attentive1 and more than once tears were in his eyes4 ,at the grave we sang a hymn4 ,chung ,moi prayed in ,chinese2 all joined in the ,lord's prayer the first half of my walk by picking my way1 now and then elongating steps1 or jumping1 generally with satisfactory results4 ,presently a place appeared where the water seemed too wide to venture with safety4 ,there was no possibility of jumping this time1 and ,i was ready to give up in despair1 when ,i discovered at some little distance a log laid across the narrow part of the stream4 ,i commenced the tight rope walk and was just congratulating myself upon my heroic adventure which1 with one step more1 would have landed me safely on the other side1 when the log tilted and off ,i went1 my knees plowing into the mud making a hole as big as grandma's workbasket4 ,i lost no time in getting up4 ,as ,i arose1 ,i saw my best parasol and big palm-leaf fan floating along leisurely in the muddy stream4 ,these were secured later1 but with much trouble1 and my portmanteau was fished from the hidden deep at the peril of crabs and other biters who make such places homes of retreat4 ,i called at the nearest cabin1 and found ,auntie with a kind heart ready to undertake the job of cleaning me up4 ,she took in the situation at once1 ejaculating1 ,lor'1 honey6 specs ,is'e goin ter let yer go ter ,sunday-school wid dem ar close all spilt8 ,sam1 take dem ar shoes and wash em clar fru for ,missus4 ,in a short time she said1 ,you's fine1 and ,i started for the little church close by1 arriving just five minutes before the ,sunday-school closed4 ,i was greeted with ,howdy by the pastor1 who is superintendent1 and was requested to speak to the children1 while the whole ,sunday school1 including twenty-six boys and girls1 and seven fathers and mothers1 rose to their feet1 indicating their delight to see me4 ,i was in time to observe one little boy standing on tiptoe to reach up to the ,bible which the minister held open on the table and was teaching him to read4 ,it was his custom1 as he was the only teacher1 to call each one separately1 and teach him to read1 as well as his ignorance would allow4 ,this is in advance of their old way of conducting ,sunday-school4 ,formerly1 all the instruction received was from ,webster's blue back1 and1 for the closing exercise1 they counted from one to a hundred4 ,the pastor attended school at ,straight ,university during the past year and can read a little1 but not intelligently4 ,he looks as if he had seen sixty years or more1 and ,i believe him to be a good man who tries to do faithful work for the ,master so far as he is able4 ,he has built a little church1 mostly with his own hands and out of his own scanty earnings4 ,it is made of rough boards1 but it has a good foundation and the roof is well shingled4 ,there are no glass windows1 but boards like a barn door hung on hinges serve to let in the light or shut out the cold in winter4 ,the people are ignorant beyond description4 ,most of them live in little huts or cabins on the banks of the canal1 getting a scanty living by working out as they can find places4 ,their homes are filthy and uninviting4 ,how much good a missionary could accomplish by going into their homes and teaching them the true ,christian way of living6 ,the mothers with whom ,i talked seemed willing1 and even anxious1 to know better ways4 ,any instruction in housekeeping would be gratefully received1 and a sewing class1 where cutting and making plain clothing were taught1 would be eagerly accepted4 ,a mothers' meeting once a week would be more helpful to those barren minds than words can express4 ,the work is right there1 all ready and waiting for some loving1 self-denying ,christian woman to take up4 ,who in the far-off ,northland will say1 ,lord1 here am ,i1 send me1 and who will reach deep in their pockets and say1 ,i will give a tenth1 yea1 even more1 for that which is more is the only true giving8 ,may ,god open the hearts of those who have an abundance and to spare1 to give liberally for the uplifting of our colored brothers and sisters4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,our afternoon4 ,i had been reading from the ninth chapter of ,mark1 where it speaks of the child-like spirit our dear ,saviour wants us to possess4 ,she listened very attentively1 and seemed especially interested when we came to the forty-first verse1 ,for whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name1 444 he shall not lose his reward4 ,she left me a few moments1 but presently came back saying3 ,won't you tell me about that verse again8 ,i gladly complied2 then came the question1 ,does it mean me--can ,i do something for ,jesus8 ,that evening1 there came a gentle rap on my door1 and to my ,come in1 ,minnie entered1 bearing a glass of water4 ,coming near1 she placed the water on a little stand by my bedside4 ,noticing that she stood as though she would speak1 ,i said1 ,what is it1 ,minnie8 ,she hesitated a moment1 then replied3 ,i was thinking about what you said about the 'cup of water1' and ,i wanted to give you something 'cause you was sick1 but ,i didn't have anything1 so ,i thought may be you might like a fresh drink of water1 for it's all ,i've got4 ,indeed1 my heart was touched by this poor girl's beautiful application of the lesson learned2 nor was it forgotten--every evening during my illness came the fresh drink from the hands of the little beginner1 who wanted to do something for ,jesus4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,letter ,,from ,,an ,,indian ,,boy4 ,,june bottom4 ,the days have been nice for about two weeks4 ,the sun shines every day1 and the wind has not blown for a long time1 but to-day the wind blows just a little but not much4 ,we always play ball1 and have nice times playing4 ,but some times we get hurt4 ,the ,perkins ,hall boys always play ball with the ,whitney ,hall boys1 but the ,whitney boys always get beaten4 ,everybody on the ,reservation has ploughed his field and planted corn1 potatoes1 onions1 squashes1 beets1 turnips1 wheat1 oats1 flax1 beans and melons1 so everything is just coming out1 and after a while they will grow big and good to eat4 ,mr4 ,lawson went away in ,may1 and the boys had to work up there alone4 ,they worked all right1 and when he came back he found that all papers were ready to be printed4 ,he came back with some galley-holders and some cases4 ,after he had been back about two weeks1 another machine came2 it is the paper cutter4 ,it is a nice machine for the printing office4 ,seven boys work in the morning and six in the afternoon1 so we are getting along first rate4 ,we always go after tipsina on the hills2 some of the people call them wild turnips4 ,they are very good to eat4 ,if you don't know them1 you lose something in your life4 ,you don't know how they taste unless you have eaten some4 ,they have dark-blue flowers on them which stand about four or five inches from the
