government understood4 ,a common interest1 a common sympathy1 a mother country1 binds one at once to this people as it never can to the ,american importation which is found at the ,west4 ,thirdly4 ,i found homes and a home life1 or rather the want of it1 which one would hardly believe possible among a white population in this country4 ,the following illustrations are correct representations of what ,i found to be average mountain cabins4 ,seldom do they contain more than two1 often only one1 room4 ,a single window1 an open fire-place1 and a few home-made articles of furniture1 comprise the whole4 ,the home is begun when its founders are yet children4 ,ignorant and poor1 the boy has took up with the girl1 and it may be they are legally married4 ,a building-bee is announced1 a little cabin erected1 a few pigs bought or given1 a few trees girdled1 some corn planted1 in so crude and shiftless a way that even an ,indian1 in his first attempts at farming1 would be ashamed to own it1 and home life is begun4 ,into this home of poverty and ignorance come the children4 ,the families are large--eight1 ten1 twelve1 and sometimes more4 ,the mother is too ignorant herself to instruct1 and had she the ability1 neither time nor strength to accomplish it are at her command4 ,life to her is a struggle4 ,at twenty she looks thirty-five1 at thirty-five she is old4 ,always she has a tired1 hopeless expression1 which simply to look at almost starts the tears4 ,the children have something of the same expression2 the babies even seem to realize that it is a sober1 sad world they the window2 the ground serves for a floor1 slabs for seats1 and the teacher is strictly in keeping with all4 ,bare-footed1 hair unkempt1 snuff stick in her mouth1 scarcely able to read herself1 she is the example--the ideal toward which her pupils are to strive4 ,religiously1 ,i found that these people1 almost without exception1 were professors1 and had jined not a ,christian church1 but some one of these native mountain pastors4 ,the accompanying illustration gives a good idea of the mountain church2 it is built of logs1 and is without windows2 the pulpit is an unpainted board2 the seats slabs from the nearest saw mill1 turned flat side up1 with pegs driven in for legs4 ,the ministry is in strict keeping with the church1 and intellectually little in advance of the people4 ,they take pride in the fact that ,these yer home-spun jeans have never brushed no dust from off no college walls1 and exultantly declare that ,the ,lord taught me how to preach3 and when the ,lord teaches a man ,american ,missionary ,association1 as representative of our ,northern ,christian sympathy1 was at work4 ,its normal schools1 fitting teachers to go out and displace the bare-footed1 ignorant1 snuff-stick-chewing school mistresses2 its churches1 fitting mothers and fathers to enter upon their duties conscious of their responsibility2 and its missionaries1 bringing in an intelligent great power4 ,rev4 ,dr4 ,gray1 a ,southern ,episcopal clergyman1 preached the missionary sermon4 ,on ,thursday evening1 came ,the ,senior ,preparatory ,exhibition4 ,on ,june seventh1 tenth and eleventh1 the various class examinations were held1 and in the evening of ,friday the seventh1 the anniversary exercises of the ,literary ,societies were given4 ,there are three healthy and vigorous societies at ,fisk1 and it was difficult to tell which of the three gave the best evidence of the superior quality of its drill1 in the exercises presented4 ,the ,normal ,department graduated a class room large enough to accommodate the audience that assembles4 ,the baccalaureate sermon was preached on ,sunday night by ,president ,hitchcock at ,central ,church4 ,on ,monday night1 the ,sumner and ,philomathean ,literary ,societies and the ,band of ,mercy held their anniversary meeting1 and listened to a very interesting lecture on ,life at a ,german ,university1 by ,rev4 ,g4,w4 ,henderson4 ,wednesday night1 came the annual concert and exhibition4 ,this has for two or three years gradually taken more and more the character of an exhibit of the gymnastic exercises1 singing1 etc41 from each grade1 and with so large a school1 gives a long programme2 but since people here have learned that at ,straight ,university1 when the appointed time comes the exercises begin1 every spot where a chair could be put in an aisle1 or a foot stand1 besides all the pews both below and in the spacious galleries of ,central1 one of the largest churches in the city1 was occupied at the moment assigned for opening1 and the attention was grand until the very last4 ,on ,thursday night1 the ,alumni ,association met at the ,university ,chapel for election of officers1 adjourning later to the parlors for a social meeting4 ,these ,alumni meetings grow each year in numbers1 interest and importance4 ,papers were read by several members1 the usual history1 prophecy and poem were given1 remarks were made by others and some good music was rendered4 ,many who could not come sent interesting letters4 ,friday night was the great occasion4 ,the crowd was no less than on ,wednesday night1 and that such an audience should sit1 giving close attention1 from #g3cj to #aa3cj1 to the orations and essays of the graduates1 with no sign of weariness1 was to me a wonderful thing and showed a deep and heart-felt interest1 in the community1 for ,christian education1 which is grandly encouraging4 ,two of the graduates were from ,mexico1 one from ,mississippi1 one from ,plaquemines ,parish1 one from ,baton ,rouge and five from this city1 the proportion from the city being larger than usual4 ,members of the ,trustee ,board and others who have heard these exercises for many years1 without hesitation pronounce them as a whole far better than those of any previous year4 ,it is certain that each year there is shown a marked advancement in general intelligence and culture1 and in the depth and arrangement of thought4 ,the venerable ,judge ,whittaker1 who seldom leaves his home at night1 was on the platform1 and at the close of the valedictory1 which was given by ,leonidas ,burbridge1 of ,greenville1 ,miss41 he jumped from his chair1 seized the young man by the hand and expressed his wonder and gratification at all he had heard and seen1 saying that in all his fifty years of life in ,new ,orleans he had seen nothing that so filled his heart with emotions of astonishment and joy4 ,i neglected to speak of the meeting on ,sunday morning1 ,may #bfth1 of the ,college ,y4,m4,c4,a41 which has had a very prosperous year4 ,the ,association was addressed by ,mr4 ,fred ,s4 ,hitchcock on ,y4,m4,c4,a4 work in the great cities1 and by ,mr4 ,perry on ,college ,y4,m4,c4,a4 work4 ,the year has been a good one1 notwithstanding many adverse circumstances4 ,the establishment of a regular graded course of study1 from the lowest primary grades to the college1 and close adherence to such course are being felt more and more each year4 ,more than half the graduates of this year began their education in the school1 and all interested are proud of them4 ,there is all along a marked difference between those who have come through our own primary schools and others equally capable who have had no systematic early training4 ,for the first time since the course of study was adopted1 every class this year has thoroughly completed the work assigned1 and in most cases reviewed it4 ,the ,state has been in a condition of great excitement during most of the year1 nearly one-half the parishes being under a complete reign of terror1 and it has been a frequent thing to see one of our students from the country1 especially from the southern parishes1 in tears in consequence of the intelligence of some friend1 father or brother perhaps1 having been the victim of some dastardly outrage from the regulators4 ,tales of sorrow and suffering could easily be gathered to fill volumes4 ,iberia1 ,terrebonne and ,lafayette parishes have been especially noted as under this reign of terror1 and from these we have many pupils4 ,three sisters of ,sammy ,wakefield1 who was shot at ,new ,iberia1 are in our school1 and many others closely connected with suffering families4 ,it has been very difficult for the colored people to get a living1 and the sacrifices they make to keep the ,institute1 and its eighteenth anniversary has been celebrated with the graduation of a class of eleven1 and the tenth reunion of an alumni association numbering some seventy five members4 ,recalling sixteen years of experience in connection with this work1 ,i can fix upon scarcely a single event or circumstance that has not been made to conduce to the advancement of our work and influence in the community1 and looking over results in all directions1 they have surpassed the dreams and expectations of the most hopeful4 ,the year past has been a remarkable one in our history4 ,our attendance has varied little from four hundred pupils in all grades of the twelve years' course1 while our enrollment for the year has reached five hundred and twenty different pupils4 ,every interest of the school has been prospered and greatly blessed and strengthened4 ,the utmost harmony and earnestness has marked the work of the year1 both among teachers and pupils4 ,during the past session1 as many as sixty of our pupils have started out in the ,christian life1 giving evidence of change of heart and an earnest purpose to live for ,christ and ,his work in the world4 ,we rejoice over this more than over been surpassed in the history of the school4 ,the exercises throughout the week were of a high order4 ,the ,sub-,normal ,exhibition and the ,prize-,speaking ,contest by the normal classes were unanimously declared to be the best ever given in ,avery4 ,at the commencement on ,wednesday1 every foot of space within sight or hearing of the platform was filled by intelligent and appreciative listeners4 ,eleven graduates--ten ladies and one gentleman--received the diploma of the ,institute and joined the hundreds who have preceded them in the grand work of elevating their race4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,new ,,church ,,and ,,school ,,at ,,alco1 ,,ala4 ,,by ,,rev4 ,r4,c4 ,,bedford4 ,brewton is the county seat of ,escambia ,county1 ,alabama4 ,it is on the ,louisville ,nashville ,railroad1 one hundred and six miles north of ,montgomery1 and seventy-four north of ,mobile4 ,it has a population of about two thousand five hundred1 and is quite thrifty4 ,alco is a mile and a half further south1 on the same road1 and is a nice little village of five or six hundred people1 that has grown up within the last three years1 and almost wholly out of the ,peters ,lumber ,company4 ,the property of the ,company consists of one of the largest and finest mills in the ,south1 with nearly #bjj1jjj acres of yellow pine surrounding it4 ,some three hundred colored men1 most of them with families1 are employed in the various operations of the mills4 ,mr4 ,peters is engaged most of the time in his large lumber and salt interests at ,manistee1 ,mich41 but comes ,south two or three times a year to look after the business at ,alco4 ,from the first1 it was the purpose of the ,company to do something to improve the church and school facilities of the colored people1 and last spring1 while ,mrs4 ,peters was spending a few weeks at ,alco1 she had a building #cex#fj erected1 and nicely arranged for church and school purposes4 ,this she turned over to the ,american ,missionary ,association1 and they at once sent down ,rev4 ,w4,p4 ,hamilton1 of ,talladega1 to open a school and begin preaching4 ,the second ,sunday in ,june1 he was joined by ,prof4 ,g4,w4 ,andrews1 of ,talladega1 ,rev4 ,r4,c4 ,bedford1 of ,montgomery1 and ,rev4 ,f4,g4 ,ragland and ,deacon ,godbold of ,mobile1 to assist him in dedicating the building4 ,though but little was known of ,congregationalism in that part of the country1 the services were entered into most heartily by all classes of the people4 ,most of the ministers at ,brewton1 in charge of colored churches1 closed their places of worship and joined with us1 partaking in the services1 and speaking with great delight of the coming of an educated preacher and teacher among them4 ,mr4 ,hamilton starts off with over fifty pupils in ,sunday and day school1 and hopes soon to have members enough so that he can take steps to call a council and organize a church4 ,the brethren of ,alabama are greatly encouraged by this movement4 ,heretofore we have had no church or school between ,montgomery and ,mobile1 one hundred and eighty miles4 ,now the distance is divided1 ,alco standing about half way between the two places4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,children',s ,,day4 laughing1 cooing babes in the arms of their ,christian parents1 who like faithful ,hannah and good ,mary of old1 had brought their babes to the house of ,god to present them to the ,lord4 ,after the rendering of a beautiful voluntary by the organist1 the whole congregation joined in singing that grand hymn1 ,holy1 holy1 holy1 ,lord ,god ,almighty6 ,the pastor then read a few passages of ,scripture selected for the occasion1 giving a short comment on the same1 and prayed for ,god's blessing on the young4 ,while the congregation joined heartily in singing1 ,heavenly ,father1 send ,thy blessing1 ,on ,thy children gathered here1 ,christian parents who desired to present their offspring to the ,lord1 having been invited1 came forward and stood before the altar with their little ones in their arms4 ,six bright-eyed1 innocent babes were1 on the faith of their believing parents1 consecrated to ,god in the ,christian ordinance of infant baptism4 ,it was a most beautiful1 pleasing and impressive service4 ,after singing1 ,take my life and let it be1 ,consecrated1 ,lord1 to ,thee1 the pastor invited all children1 calling them by name1 who were ten years of age and had been baptized in the church when infants1 to come forward4 ,the church1 then1 through its pastor1 at a cost of twenty-three dollars1 presented to each child1 7nineteen in number7 a beautiful1 well-bound copy of the with you till we meet again1 and the benediction was pronounced4 ,thus1 a very interesting and we trust profitable service of an hour and twenty minutes was ended4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,indians4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,letter ,,from ,,miss ,,collins4 ,no facts in this field can be of more interest to the readers of the ,,missionary than those contained in the following thrilling account of the conversion of three young ,indians in ,miss ,collins' mission field4 ,we give the facts as written by this self-sacrificing missionary4 ,last ,sabbath1 ,mr4 ,riggs came up from ,oahe and we had communion1 and there were five children baptized and seven grown people1 and seven more were examined and advised to wait till the next communion4 ,it was a most interesting season4 ,three of the young men were the leaders in the ,indian dance4 ,they have always been the head ones in all ,indian customs4 ,a year ago1 one of them said in the dance that he should follow the ,indian customs a year longer--give himself up to them wholly and try to be satisfied1 and if he had in his heart the same unsatisfied feeling1 the same longing1 that he then had1 he should throw it all away4 ,on last ,new ,year's day1 the same young man1 ,huntington ,wolcott1 came to me and said--,last night ,i arose in the dance and told them that ,i had given the old customs and the old ,indians a fair trial1 and that they did not satisfy1 now ,i should leave them forever and give myself to ,god1 and if any others were ready to follow to arise and so make it known4 ,the other two leaders arose1 stood silently a moment1 and walked out4 ,from that time they have given themselves up to singing1 praying and studying the ,bible4 ,they had1 for two years1 been halting between two opinions1 attending the school1 church1 etc41 and the ,indian feasts and dances1 too4 ,these three having come out so boldly on ,god's side1 has made a great change in our work here4 ,poor old ,running-,antelope feels very sad4 ,it is his desire to keep the young men from learning ,christianity and civilization as long as he can4 ,he wants them to have everything in common1 and to feel that for an individual to accumulate anything is a disgrace4 ,as long as they feel so1 of course squalor and suffering will be the natural consequences4 ,the young men are working hard to build up homes and to accumulate something for their families during the winter4 ,one young man has cut logs and is building a house4 ,i try to teach them that long prayers and loud singing is not all of ,christianity--that however regularly a man attends to his church duties1 if he fails to provide for his family1 his religion is vain2 and if he gives all his goods to his friends and lets his wife and children cry for bread1 that their cries will reach the ears of ,god1 and his prayers and hymns will be lost in this round of wailing of the hungry4 ,all this is very different from their old ,indian doctrine and hard to occupying separate buildings and a separate locality1 and managed by the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,a recent visit to the school it may be worth while to report4 ,it is for the ,apache ,indians and the youth who are gathered into it are of the ,jiccarrilla band4 ,their reservation is about two hundred miles west1 and is reached by railroad or by pony transportation4 ,the teachers deem it better to have the school some distance from the people so as to make its impression the more positive1 and yet near enough for the parents to visit their children occasionally while at school4 ,this keeps up the interest and prevents the children from being educated away from their elders4 ,two good sized buildings are used4 ,in one there are the school rooms1 the accommodations for the teachers1 and the lodgings for the boys4 ,in the other1 under a matron1 there are lodgings for the girls1 work rooms for the same1 and the boarding department for all4 ,the ,indian girls do the cooking for the establishment4 ,i saw them getting dinner and ,i saw many loaves of beautiful white bread made by them4 ,in their work shop they make their own clothes4 ,the boys1 under the lead of the principal1 ,prof4 ,elmore ,chase1 work at cobbling1 making ditches and cultivating the soil1 and also do something with carpenter's tools4 ,the ,government pays over a hundred dollars a year for each student toward the expense of board1 clothes1 etc4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association appoints the teachers and directs the school4 ,the scholars1 thirty in all1 have made very creditable progress in their studies1 considering the short time the school has been in operation1 from three to four years4 ,prof4 ,whipple1 now of ,wheaton ,college1 who for a time was principal of the ,ramona1 testifies3 ,i never saw on an average such aptness1 docility and faithfulness in school and industrial work4 ,the religious influence of the school has not been interfered with by the thought that several of the youth gave such evidence of an experience of grace as would satisfy us concerning white children4 ,i was permitted to see half a dozen letters written by the scholars to be warmest greetings from teacher and pupils awaited me4 ,the lessons of the evening received our first attention1 for it is a principle with us that each scholar shall have the ,english lesson promised him1 whoever may be present and whatever else we may desire to do4 ,this is the demand of good faith1 and not less of good policy4 ,it is the ,english lesson that holds them where the gospel can reach them1 so that this we must never forego4 ,when all this was accomplished1 those who could read with comparative ease were gathered about a table for a sort of ,bible reading1 which ,i proposed to give them1 in the fifteenth chapter of ,luke4 ,this was the manner of it3 ,one of them read the first verse1 being helped over the hard words1 then ,i explained it in as simple ,english as ,i could command2 then the reader translated both it and my explanation into ,chinese1 each other pupil keeping watch to see whether what was said expressed the ideas which he had received from me4 ,at this time1 we were much aided by the co-operation of ,yong ,jin1 our missionary helper1 whose translations ,i could depend upon quite confidently1 but ,i often give these readings without such help1 feeling quite sure that if six or eight have received the same idea1 they have received the one ,i meant to give4 ,when we had finished the first verse1 a second pupil read the second verse with the same method1 and so on4 ,some felt unequal to the task of translating1 but most were willing to try1 and most who tried succeeded strangely well4 ,i had intended to follow this with a few words of exhortation1 but just as we read the last verse1 ,yong ,ack arrived4 ,this is a brother who was converted about a year ago4 ,his daily work is that of a cook in a way-side inn1 about six 7some said presence and work of the ,spirit were unmistakable4 ,at length1 a little after nine1 ,yong ,ack appeared4 ,he had been over that road three times that day1 and expected1 before morning to go over it again4 ,but he confessed no weariness either by word or by manner4 ,he was bright1 wakeful1 joyous4 ,he confessed ,christ1 was baptized1 and was welcomed with gladness to the church1 after which we gathered round the table of the ,lord4 ,wednesday and ,thursday were spent in and about ,marysville4 ,both ,oroville and ,marysville are hard fields4 ,in both of them good work has been done in days past1 but the fruits from the seed sown have been widely scattered1 so that in each place but few ,christians remain4 ,our ,chinese ,church in ,marysville1 some years ago was reported--truthfully1 ,i and its passive membership4 ,how to increase the latter from without1 and how to transfer recruits from the passive to the active list1 are problems that have taxed the ingenuity of not a few and have not infrequently been abandoned as insoluble4 ,it has so long been said1 ,this missionary work always has to be carried on by a few1 that the expression has come to have something of the force of axiomatic truth which1 of course1 no one dares assail4 ,and so the missionary society lives on1 decade after decade1 with less than a quarter of the women of the church on its list1 and of that quarter not more than one-fourth active members4 ,how to change these conditions1 is the problem which confronts us4 ,i4--,it has not always been clear who should be included in the membership1 but with the broad scope given to our ,home ,missionary ,unions1 its auxiliaries should include3 ,first4--,every woman who thinks that if she were living on some lonely frontier and had for years heard no sermon1 no public prayer1 no songs of praise1 had no communion service1 no ,christian fellowship1 she would welcome the home missionary and all the sweet influences of the ,gospel4 ,second4--,every woman who thinks we owe it to the ,freedwoman to put into her life and home something of the sweetness and purity of our own2 to the ,indian woman a sympathetic effort for her uplifting1 in atonement for a ,century of ,dishonor4 ,third4--,every woman who thinks that if she1 or her sister or daughter1 were heroic enough to share the labors and sacrifices of a home missionary1 she ought to have some better place to live in than an old grocery1 a room over a saloon or the basement of a church4 ,fourth4--,every woman who thinks that if she were an inmate of a ,mormon home she might not have grace to welcome the companionship of the second1 third or tenth woman who might be sealed by celestial marriage to her husband4 ,fifth4--,every woman who thinks there are worthy young men trying to prepare themselves for ministerial or missionary work whose struggle with poverty ought to be relieved4 ,sixth4--,every woman who would welcome for her own children1 if she were living in some ,godless community1 the ,sunday-school missionary and the books1 papers1 lesson helps1 prayers and ,christian songs which make the ,sunday-school a place of blessed influences4 ,if there be in any ,christian church a woman who will respond to none of these calls for service to the extent of a moderate annual membership fee1 say twenty-five cents1 she has missed the true import of the ,gospel and has never entered into its most blessed privileges4 ,let us assume that there is no such1 but that rightly approached1 every woman worthy a place in the church will be willing to enroll herself into at least the passive membership of the local society4 ,,ii4--,the management of this new membership1 presumably uninformed1 indifferent1 possibly prejudiced1 will require familiar acquaintance with our six benevolences1 sympathy with them all1 much practical wisdom1 good courage1 and the spirit of ,i ,corinthians1 #acth chapter4 ,the ,president must do more than preside at the meetings4 ,she must plan every detail2 must know beforehand what hymns1 what ,scripture lesson1 who shall lead in singing and in prayer1 what reports1 what letters1 what original papers1 what selections1 what business4 ,everything must be carefully planned and written down1 yet there must be withal a certain amount of elasticity of management1 so that the timid question may be answered1 the objection removed1 the enthusiasm expressed4 ,the ,president will welcome strangers and greet the diffident and neglected4 ,she will not be surprised at seeing anybody at the meeting4 ,it was reasonably to be expected4 ,the ,secretary will do more than keep the minutes of the meetings4 ,she will not forget the proper public announcement of the meetings and will add special invitations to such as may not feel themselves included in the general4 ,she will send for such printed helps as are needed for use4 ,she will fill out distinctly and promptly such blanks as are needed for ,conference1 ,state or other ,reports1 and her quarterly and annual reports will be helpful from their information and their inspiration4 ,the ,treasurer will do more than passively receive what is brought to her hands4 ,she will see that no one is overlooked when a canvass is made for any object2 that pledges are redeemed2 that the way is made easy for the poor to give without embarrassment and the rich without ostentation4 ,she will see that all moneys are forwarded as designated and that they go through the ,state ,treasury4 ,but the highest qualification any local officer can possess1 is the ability to transfer members from the passive to the active list4 ,some practical hints toward this result maybe gathered from the following suggestions3 ,aim at unity of effect for each meeting4 ,make some one of the six benevolences the subject1 and center everything--,scripture1 hymn1 prayer1 letter1 paper1 leaflet1 about the single topic4 ,suppose it be ,missions on our ,western frontier4 ,ask some lady to prepare a fifteen minutes' paper4 ,give out in addition six back numbers of the ,home ,missionary to as many ladies1 asking each to select a paragraph or short article bearing directly on the subject and which she thinks will1 or ought to1 interest the meeting4 ,let several of these ladies be chosen from the passive list--the diffident or even the indifferent4 ,in making their selections1 they will perhaps have made their first acquaintance with missionary magazines and will have learned something about the heroism of our home missionaries4 ,moreover1 they will have participated in the exercises4 ,this1 repeated with variations1 will give them courage to speak1 and intelligent thoughts to express4 ,they are on the way to active participation4 ,crown the exercises with a collection4 ,the leader must know how to kindle enthusiasm and put it to the tangible proof4 ,the subject for the next meeting may be some branch of the work of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 as ,indian ,missions in ,dakota4 ,assign to some one a paper1 an historical sketch4 ,she will need books from the missionary library4 ,ten years among the ,dakotas1 and ,mary and ,i2 or1 ,life among the ,sioux1 7to which she would never think of going for help unless informed that the ,dakotas and ,sioux are one47 ,she may also send to ,miss ,emerson for further helps4 ,then1 in addition1 give out back numbers of the ,american ,missionary to two or three passive ladies1 asking them to make short selections concerning ,indian missions--or let one read ,prof4 ,g4,f4 ,wright's leaflet--,indian ,missions as seen upon the ground--and another some missionary's letter4 ,call out expressions of interest in the work--proofs of its success--etc41 and ask if we ought not to do something for its support4 ,give to everyone present a small envelope with the request that it be brought to the next meeting with a free will offering for ,indian missions4 ,the next meeting may be devoted to ,christian work among the ,mormons1 using the ,new ,west ,reports1 ,the ,gleaner1 newspaper extracts1 missionary letters and1 if possible1 have the experience of some one who has visited the schools and the homes of sin-cursed ,utah4 ,having awakened deep interest1 the proposition to procure a lecture or a musical entertainment and devote the proceeds to the ,new ,west ,commission will probably find favor and be carried on to success4 ,for the next meeting1 choose another object1 as ,parsonage ,building4 ,distribute copies of the ,church ,building ,quarterly and again the indispensable back numbers of ,the ,home ,missionary1 and have extracts read which show the discomfort1 and even distress1 which come to the family of the home missionary4 ,propose aid in the form of a birthday offering1 in which every member brings in an envelope as many cents as she is years old4 ,the result may be surprising4 ,for other objects other plans1 but in every case the way should be prepared for intelligent giving4 ,it has sometimes resulted favorably to secure1 at the beginning of the year1 pledges for some definite1 well understood object1 as a teacher's or missionary's salary1 or a share in one1 which should apparently but not really exhaust the resources of the society1 and have the payments made as early in the year as practicable4 ,then pursue intelligent study of the other fields until the time is ripe for proposing generous aid to the one which appeals most strongly to the combined judgment and sympathy4 ,and so on through the year1 in which time the six benevolences can all be reached4 ,this somewhat irregular method of procedure has perhaps no better defence than that it has been known to produce good results4 ,a society the intelligence and consecration of whose members could be relied upon would doubtless find the plan of monthly pledges1 to be divided according to some accepted schedule1 much easier4 ,no special labor would have to be expended to make the need apparent1 or to awaken sympathy for the object1 or to choose the best means of attaining it4 ,gifts would be systematic and uniform throughout the year and could be counted upon4 ,the machinery1 well oiled at the start1 would run smoothly and quietly1 and woman's work would not be made unpleasantly prominent4 ,but it seems doubtful whether as many gifts would flow into the treasury and whether the gifts would be accompanied by as much interest1 sympathy and prayer4 ,the hints concerning management thus far presuppose a ,home ,missionary ,society organized on the modern basis of a programme of devotional exercises and various mission studies1 and do not apply to those cases in which such exercises have been engrafted upon a sewing society with a long line of ,dorcases as ,presidents1 and antecedents too respectable to be ruthlessly set aside4 ,how shall a sewing society be so modified as to best subserve the present home missionary needs8 ,do not create friction by attempting a sudden and complete revolution4 ,propose that the brief devotional exercises with which such gatherings sometimes close be placed a little earlier than usual1 that there may be time for some interesting missionary letter or some inspiring leaflet1 or other selection1 or better still1 an original paper on some live topic4 ,when about the usual season for beginning the missionary box arrives1 prepare a symposium on the subject of boxes4 ,select and distribute brief paragraphs from the magazines concerning missionary debts1 from missionary letters concerning unpaid salaries1 and lead gradually up to the question whether if we were missionaries we would rather receive a box or a check for an unpaid salary4 ,which would best enable a minister to look his creditors1 who are also his parishioners1 in the face--the new pulpit suit or cash to pay off accumulated bills8 ,in trying to decide between box and salary1 the society may decide for both1 and a point is gained4 ,when box preparations begin1 assign them a proper place in the meeting4 ,do not permit papers and addresses to be sandwiched between rolling quilt frames and turning down refractory hems1 or punctuated by requests or signals for scissors1 thread1 and bits of gingham2 and do not spoil garments by working with divided attention4 ,give each its hour or its day4 ,best of all1 when a box is in preparation1 sew early1 late1 and often1 till it is despatched4 ,then resume the studies1 being especially careful to have their first resumption provided with an attractive programme4 ,in all cases when studies have been grafted upon sewing1 encourage the graft4 ,it ought to yield better fruit than the original stock4 ,it should be the constant aim of those in charge of local societies to inspire in the membership intelligent interest in the six branches of our work--to cultivate a spirit of liberality toward them all--to create in every member a desire to aid them all4 ,only with such an aim can the local society achieve
