,society1 and to the earlier ,congregational ,association of that ,state1 was fully discussed1 and resulted in the following action3 ,in the full conviction that these churches are in accord with the principles of ,congregationalism1 and with the principles of this ,society1 and with those held by the ,congregational churches which it represents3 ,resolved4 ,that we heartily welcome them to fellowship with us in the ,gospel4 ,we commend them to the fraternal sympathy and prayers of all our people1 and we request the officers of the society to extend to them such financial aid as they may need as promptly as the state of its treasury will allow4 ,resolved4 ,that this ,society rejoices to learn that an effort is making to unite the ,georgia ,congregational ,conference and the ,georgia ,congregational ,association on principles of equal recognition and fellowship of all the churches of each body1 and trust that such a union will be accomplished4 ,we are in full and hearty agreement with the general spirit of these utterances4 ,in the hope that the churches of the ,georgia ,conference are in accord with the principles of ,congregationalism1 which do not discriminate against men because of caste or color1 we are prepared to welcome them heartily4 ,that ,conference has already published its ,articles of ,faith and of ,church ,government1 and these have assured us of its adherence to the general principles of the ,congregational faith and order4 ,the only question still open is as to the readiness of that body to unite with the ,congregational churches already existing in that ,state in the practical recognition of the broad ,christian and ,congregational principles in the fellowship of all churches irrespective of caste distinctions4 ,the second resolution quoted above rejoices in the effort now making to unite the two ,congregational bodies in ,georgia on that basis4 ,we trust that effort may be successful1 for we believe that such a union is essential to recognition by the ,national ,council and to the cordial fellowship of the ,congregational churches4 ,the ,georgia ,association1 ever since its organization in #ahgh1 has been recognized and represented in every subsequent meeting of the ,national ,council1 and we cannot see how the ,council can consistently welcome another organization1 covering the same ,state1 that is kept separate from the older body by the line of race or color2 nor do we believe that the ,congregational churches of this country will fellowship both organizations thus held apart4 ,we are confirmed in the correctness of this impression from the decided and independent utterances of the influential religious papers which so largely represent the sentiments of the ,congregational churches of this country4 ,we present below some extracts from such of these papers published since the ,saratoga meeting as have come to hand before the ,,missionary goes to press1 while in another portion of our pages we give more at length the prior utterances of these journals on the same general subject4 ,we deem the question to be so important that we wish to lay it fully before our readers4 ,from ,the ,independent4 ,we have nothing but satisfaction to express with this action4 ,it would be absurd to imagine that ,congregationalists could forget their spotless record1 and could now1 for the pride of the addition of fifty or a hundred churches1 consent to help a movement that should put colored brothers in a separate fellowship by themselves4 ,this they will never do4 ,they will hold out a warm hand of welcome to all comers1 and warmest to those who come to them from the ,south1 white and black3 but they want them to come together1 not apart4 ,from ,the ,congregationalist4 ,this1 we are confident1 was the proper attitude for the ,society to assume4 ,no one wanted to grieve or irritate the ,southern brethren1 by clauses in the resolutions1 which might seem uncalled for1 or at all distrustful of their explicit utterances4 ,at the same time it should be distinctly understood that the unanimous action taken means that the ,congregational churches stand exactly where the ,presbyterians do1 in not abating one hair of their principles1 and in forever demanding that color shall prove no barrier to ,christian fellowship in its truest1 deepest intent4 ,this journal has taken this position repeatedly1 and it re-asserts it4 ,sooner or later1 but as surely as the sun-rise1 it will prevail1 because it is right1 and our grandchildren1 if not our children1 will wonder that any of our generation ever hesitated about it4 ,from ,the ,advance4 ,then1 the question as to the color-line in the churches1 as known to exist in the ,south1 could not be ignored4 ,our ,congregational churches and their two great ,home ,missionary ,societies1 the ,american ,home ,missionary ,society and the ,american ,missionary ,association1 hold to certain principles respecting the universal brotherhood of believers in ,christ1 and for which they stand before the world as witnesses1 historically1 conspicuously1 always and everywhere4 ,do these newly constituted ,congregational churches in the ,south stand with us on this point8 ,to ask this question implies not the slightest suspicion or distrust4 ,not to have asked it would have been to betray a great responsibility4 ,for one thing1 the ,home ,missionary ,society could not afford to even seem to be indifferent to a matter of this kind4 ,and if there is to be this close fellowship and co-operation and mutual assistance1 there should obviously be1 from the beginning1 the most perfect frankness4 ,the best way to insure permanence of happy mutual relations is to begin right4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,atlanta ,,university4 ,the ,state officials of ,georgia are disposed1 perhaps it might be said they desire1 to renew the gift of eight thousand dollars to the ,atlanta ,university1 insisting1 however1 upon compliance with the color-line requisition4 ,to this1 the ,university cannot yield4 ,the controversy on that subject was not of its seeking4 ,the children of the professors had for years attended the classes1 and the ,state ,examiners had known this all the time and had made no objections4 ,the demand for the exclusion of these pupils from the classes was suddenly made by an outside pressure1 and was not provoked in any way by word or deed of the teachers4 ,to surrender now is simply to yield a principle for money4 ,some of the officials of the ,state express the wish that a compromise may be effected1 but others of their number--the large majority1 we believe--regard this as impossible1 and hence both parties--the ,state and the ,university--must pursue their independent lines of action4 ,under these circumstances1 the ,trustees of the ,university have deemed it wise to resume relations of co-operation with the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,this question was fully discussed at the recent meeting of the ,board of ,trustees1 ,may #bith1 two of the members1 ,drs4 ,beard and ,strieby1 being present and presenting1 in behalf of the ,executive ,committee of the ,association1 some overtures for co-operation4 ,one of these was accepted1 and is now the basis of the relations existing between the ,association and the ,university4 ,it stipulates that the ,trustees of the ,university shall elect six of the sixteen members of the ,board1 on the nomination of the ,executive ,committee of the ,association1 as vacancies may exist1 and that the ,association shall 7after the present fiscal year7 contribute #c1jjj per annum towards defraying the current expenses of the ,university4 ,four vacancies were found to exist in the ,board1 and1 in accordance with the vote1 they were filled by the unanimous choice of ,rev4 ,drs4 ,twichell of ,hartford1 ,llewellyn ,pratt of ,norwich1 ,cooper of ,new ,britain1 and ,brand of ,oberlin4 ,these honored brethren1 friends alike of the ,association and of the ,university1 will1 if they accept1 add to the efficiency of the school and to the confidence of the public in it4 ,we believe there is a bright future before the ,university4 ,it will pursue its work quietly1 having no controversy with the ,state1 and will continue its noble efforts for the education of the colored race1 thus benefiting both the ,state of ,georgia and the ,nation4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,industry ,,and ,,skill ,,of ,,the ,,negro4 ,in replacing the burned portion of our building at ,le ,moyne ,institute1 ,memphis1 ,tenn41 the work was done by colored men4 ,the ,principal of the ,institute says that1 though the job was far from simple1 not a single error or mistake has occurred from beginning to end to mar our satisfaction at its successful completion4 ,the architect who drew the plan expressed considerable anxiety lest a colored mechanic with all colored assistants should not prove equal to so large and important an undertaking4 ,the result shows how unfounded were his forebodings4 ,the job is done1 and well done1 and with so much expedition that in sixty days after the fire they were moving into the reconstructed and improved building4 ,every one who has had any hand in the work has seemed personally interested and anxious to expedite the work1 from the architect and lumber dealer to the commonest laborer4 99 99 99 99 99 ,superintendent ,hall writes3 ,testimony as to the working power and will of the ,negro is to be had on all sides whenever a person speaks honestly4 ,a professional gentleman in ,andersonville operates five large plantations without any white overseer except himself1 and is making money from the land4 ,he states his principle to be3 ,i make a short1 clear contract with the ,negroes and do exactly what ,i promise1 and ,i require the same execution of their side of the bargain4 ,and ,i pay them just what ,i agree to pay them4 ,they work six days every week4 ,i give them a chance to attend a funeral or church service if they keep up the work4 ,a prominent contractor1 builder and brick-maker in ,thomasville1 ,ga41 employs from one hundred to three hundred ,negroes constantly in all branches of his business4 ,he says3 ,they are a patient1 reliable class of workers4 ,if a man will be fair with them and do as he agrees1 he will never have trouble4 ,they are not cranky as some white workmen4 ,they do the finest part of mason's and carpenter's work well4 ,these two men are native ,southerners1 whose parents were large slave owners4 ,fault is portion of the diocesan convention had seceded because the bishop declared that he could not exclude a regularly ordained minister who was black4 ,the canon law now has been amended so as to exclude henceforth all other black men1 and the seceders have returned1 consenting to make the best of the one obnoxious colored man1 but indignant because he has not been ejected4 ,whether the ,general ,convention will endorse or repudiate this compromise remains to be seen4 ,in either case the ,episcopal branch of the church might as well abandon its efforts to make headway among the colored race in that ,state4 ,so far as we can see1 the bishop has made a manly stand1 however1 and deserves commendation and sympathy4 ,but the seceders have shown a sad lack of the true spirit of ,christ4 ,from ,the ,advance4 ,there have been in ,georgia for ten or more years a number of ,congregational churches and a ,state ,congregational ,association4 ,this included1 along with the pastors of colored churches1 the ,president and some of the ,professors in ,atlanta ,university4 ,last year1 when that interesting body of churches hitherto known as ,congregational ,methodists1 saw fit to take measures for becoming in name as well as in fact ,congregationalists1 a ,georgia ,congregational ,conference was formed1 a committee was also appointed to confer with the previously existing ,congregational ,association1 with a view to the right adjustment of relations between the members of the two organizations4 ,we publish on another page the reply recently addressed by the ,association to the ,conference1 with a view to unity on terms that would be in themselves ,christian and agreeable to both the parties interested1 as well as acceptable to ,congregationalists everywhere4 ,all of our churches have an interest in a matter of such significance1 as they would also be sensitive to the reproach of there being two distinct ,congregational ,associations in the same ,state1 separated from each other on the un-,christian caste line of race and color4 ,with the temper and spirit manifest in the communication referred to1 it would seem that the way is now open for a happy consummation of ,congregational fellowship in the ,state of ,georgia1 on terms which not only ,congregationalists but ,christians of every name at the ,north will warmly approve and applaud4 ,from ,the ,independent4 ,the members of the ,presbyterian ,general ,assembly can go home from ,new ,york assured that they have vindicated truth and righteousness4 ,the one vital1 vicious fault in the report of the ,conference ,committee of the ,northern and ,southern ,presbyterian ,churches on ,co-operation was amended out of it and as it now stands adopted it gives not even by implication any support to the unchristian doctrine of separate presbyteries and synods for black and half-white ,presbyterians4 ,when the ,general ,assembly met a year ago the ,church had been somewhat stirred up1 though the leaders and editors generally seemed so anxious for a proud reunion that they were ready to forget the wrong proposed to the colored brothers4 ,indeed1 a volunteer commission of editors and managers had gone all through the ,south visiting the synods of the ,northern ,church where the ,negroes were in the majority1 persuading them that it would be better for them to go by themselves and get their share of the honors4 ,not willing to be an obstacle1 the ,negroes had very generally yielded to the persuasions of their kind visitors4 ,but there were a number of earnest men who were not willing to yield the principle1 and who would make a fight4 ,it was the ,centennial year1 and the two ,assemblies were meeting at the same time and in neighboring cities1 ready to consummate the union if desired4 ,but the previous discussion had stirred up the ,southerners also1 and they had discovered that the temper of the ,north was not all that had been represented4 ,they were not at all sure that the color-line could be peacefully drawn4 ,they had decided1 therefore1 not to unite4 ,the report of the ,committee of ,conference was accordingly withdrawn1 and the matter referred to another committee1 which praised the fidelity of the ,committee1 declared it premature to act on their report1 and approved the general principles enumerated in the replies of the ,committee1 and recommended that the committee of thirteen be enlarged by the addition of five more men1 and continued to devise methods of co-operation with the ,southern ,church4 ,in fear of acrimonious discussion this was railroaded through in two minutes4 ,well1 the ,general ,assembly has met again and the action taken by an overwhelming majority of the ,assembly fills us with gratitude to ,god4 ,the ticklish part of the report on co-operation was that1 of course1 on colored evangelization4 ,here the report first stated what had been the policy of the ,southern ,church for a separate ,negro denomination1 and then gave that of the ,northern ,church3 ,the ,northern ,assembly1 on the other hand1 has pronounced itself as not in favor of setting off its colored members into a separate1 independent organization2 while by conceding the existing situation1 it approves the policy of separate churches1 presbyteries and synods1 subject to the choice of the colored people themselves4 ,only one of the seventeen1 ,elder ,s4,m4 ,breckinridge1 of ,st4 ,louis1 signed a minority report4 ,it was fully expected that this report1 so overwhelmingly recommended1 would go through with a rush4 ,the managers had so planned4 ,the ex-,moderators1 ,smith1 ,crosby and ,thompson1 were in its favor4 ,dr4 ,crosby said he would as soon be in the ,southern ,church as in the ,northern4 ,all the prestige of good fellowship was in favor of the report as it was presented1 and the ,southern ,assembly had adopted it by a large majority the day before4 ,the ,rev4 ,john ,fox1 of ,allegheny1 ,penn41 opened the opposition1 opposing the report generally1 and supporting ,elder ,breckinridge's minority report4 ,it was a useful speech1 and1 though the sentiment of the ,assembly was plainly opposed1 it stemmed the tide awhile and prepared the way for what was to follow4 ,ex-,moderator ,smith1 of ,baltimore1 ,chairman of the ,northern ,assembly's ,committee1 then defended his report and showed how much the ,southern ,assembly had yielded in accepting it4 ,then came the event of the day4 ,the ,rev4 ,m4 ,woolsey ,stryker1 of ,chicago1 a young man of thirty-five1 whom our readers will remember as one of our correspondents1 arose and denounced that portion of the report which in the paragraph given above we have put in italics1 and moved its omission4 ,he denied that the ,church ever had approved the policy of separate churches1 presbyteries and synods1 and he declared such a policy to be utterly unchristian4 ,it instantly appeared that he had the sympathy of the ,assembly1 if not of its leaders4 ,dr4 ,niccolls1 of ,st4 ,louis1 supported him vigorously1 but briefly1 for speakers had been shut down to five minute speeches4 ,dr4 ,mc,culloch1 of ,alton ,presbytery1 ,ill41 defended the report and asked1 ,do you mean to tell me that if the colored people themselves prefer separate churches1 presbyteries and synods1 you would deny them the right to have them8 ,yes1 by all means1 shouted ,mr4 ,stryker1 whose clear head and bold answer was rewarded with loud approval4 ,dr4 ,crosby said he understood that the ,negroes had last year indicated their desire for separation2 but ,mr4 ,sanders1 the colored editor of ,the ,africo-,american ,presbyterian1 of ,north ,carolina1 arose1 and said they had many of them consented to it last year rather than seem to stand in the way of re-union1 but that this year there was no reason for such a sacrifice1 that they did not wish it1 and that while the presbytery of which he was a member had no white ministers in it1 they would be glad to welcome them if they would come4 ,after other addresses1 the motion of ,mr4 ,stryker for the excision of the paragraph favoring separation of the races was put and carried by an overwhelming majority1 not less than three to one1 and the report1 with this amendment1 adopted4 ,it was a glorious victory1 due to the conscience of the rank and file of the ,assembly1 a victory of the ,christian heart of fellowship with the humblest over the pride and ambition of greatness and power4 ,the ,assembly has done its duty by its colored members1 and every colored member's face was radiant with delight4 ,we have never doubted that if the subject once came fairly up for discussion1 the ,conference ,committee would learn something they did not know before about their denomination4 ,encouraged by the indorsement given by the ,presbyterian ,assembly to the position we have maintained against the separation of ,christians in the ,church of ,christ1 we shall not neglect the same conflict going on among the ,congregationalists and ,episcopalians4 ,from the ,christian ,union4 ,the question whether the ,church of ,christ shall recognize the color line is coming up to vex in turn each one of the great ,protestant denominations in the ,north4 ,we say ,protestant denominations advisedly2 for we do not believe that the ,roman ,catholic ,church would for a moment entertain the notion of excluding a man either from its sacraments1 its worshiping assemblies1 or its priesthood1 on the ground of color1 or would recognize in its worshiping assemblies any distinction except the broad one between clergy and laity4 ,to do so would be to violate all its traditions and history4 ,in the ,protestant denominations of the ,north1 the question is complicated by two considerations3 a strong anti-caste prejudice in the ,northern constituency1 on which the missionary organizations are dependent for their support1 and a strong ecclesiastical ambition and spiritual desire1 commingled in various proportions1 to push on the work of church extension in the ,south1 where it cannot1 apparently1 be pushed forward with early success1 if caste is ignored and colored ,christians are admitted to white churches1 and colored clergymen to white ecclesiastical assemblies1 on equal terms with their white brethren4 ,in the ,diocesan ,episcopal ,convention of ,south ,carolina it is1 therefore1 proposed to amend the diocesan constitution so as to provide for two ,conventions1 a white and a colored4 ,in the ,presbyterian ,church the difference of opinion on this subject constitutes one bar to a union between the ,northern and ,southern churches1 or even to co-operation between them4 ,this has been for the time removed by a sort of concordat by which the relations of the colored and the white members in the two churches respectively are allowed to remain in statu quo1 and the settlement of the problem is relegated to the future4 ,in the ,congregational denomination1 the question is likely to come up before the meeting of the ,american ,home ,missionary ,society at ,saratoga early in ,june1 and again before the ,national ,council at ,worcester in ,october4 ,in the ,state of ,georgia1 there has been for some time an ,association of ,congregational churches mainly composed of colored people1 and largely under the fostering care of the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,a ,congregational work has latterly been started among the whites under the fostering care of the ,american ,home ,missionary ,society4 ,and recently a body of independent ,methodists1 really ,congregational in the principles of their government1 and having a considerable number of churches in ,georgia1 and some in other ,southern ,states1 has become also ,congregational in name4 ,both bodies will have representatives1 presumably1 at ,saratoga1 certainly at the meeting of the ,national ,council at ,worcester in ,october1 and the latter body1 if not the former1 will have to determine whether it will recognize two ,congregational ,associations in one ,state1 the sole difference between them being that one ,association is composed wholly of white people1 and the other chiefly of colored people2 unless1 indeed--and of this there is some hope--the ,congregational ,associations of ,georgia solve the problem by coming together and forming one body4 ,there have been some correspondence and conferences to consider the possibility of such a union4 ,we find ourselves on this subject occupying a position midway between the radicals on the one side and the conservatives on the other4 ,in some parts of the ,south1 the whites and ,negroes must for many years to come be educated in separate schools and worship in separate churches4 ,they need1 to some extent1 a different education2 they desire1 to a large extent1 a different kind of religious worship and instruction4 ,the preaching which appeals to the ,anglo-,saxon race appears cold and unmeaning to the warm-blooded ,negro2 the preaching which arouses in him a real religious fervor appears to his cold-blooded neighbor imaginative1 passionate1 unintelligent4 ,to attempt to force the two races into a fellowship distasteful to both1 to attempt to require the two to listen to the same type of sermon and join in the same forms of worship1 is a reform against nature4 ,even if the erection and maintenance of two churches where one would suffice for the worshipers of both classes involves some additional expense1 the expense may not be greater than the resultant spiritual advantage4 ,but to close the doors of any church on any ,christian is in so far to make it an unchristian church4 ,to go into the ,south to establish white churches from which1 whether by a formal law or by an unwritten but self-enforcing edict1 men are excluded because ,god made them black1 is to deny one of the fundamental tenets of ,christ3 ,all ye are brethren4 ,it is to introduce into a church already divided by sectarian strifes a new division4 ,it is to rend afresh the seamless robe4 ,to say to any man asking for ,christian fellowship on the simple ground of faith in ,christ1 ,stand back3 for ,i am whiter than thou1 is simply a new and indefensible form of ,pharisaism4 ,the church exists to proclaim certain truths1 among which the brotherhood of man stands pre-eminent4 ,it is difficult to see with what consistency a ,christian minister can preach on the parable of the ,good ,samaritan if his church refuses to recognize a ,christian brother in one of another race because he belongs to another race4 ,there is no reason for an attempt to corral all men of all races in one inclosure2 but for any church1 especially for a church of the ,puritans1 to enter upon missionary work in the ,south1 and initiate it by refusing to admit to its fellowship a black man because he is black1 is to apostatize from the faith in order to get a chance to preach the faith4 ,to assert equality and brotherhood at the polls1 to reaffirm it in a public school system1 to reassert it by courts of law in the hotel and the railroad train1 and then deny it in the church1 would be indeed a singular incongruity1 and would make the ,nation more ,christian than the church4 ,the principle1 then1 by which the color-line question is to be settled is very simple1 though its application may in some cases present some difficulties4 ,the whites and ,negroes are not to be coerced or bribed into uniting in one and the same church organizations4 ,if they prefer to worship and to work separately1 they must be allowed so to do4 ,this is within their ,christian liberty4 ,but it is not within their ,christian liberty to refuse the fullest and most perfect ,christian fellowship to each other4 ,the doors of every ,christian church must stand wide open to men of every race and color4 ,the only reason of exclusion must be in moral or spiritual character4 ,and in the higher representative bodies these churches must be one4 ,to organize1 for example1 in the ,state of ,georgia two ,congregational bodies1 one white and the other colored1 would be to organize a church to perpetuate divisions which the church should aim to educational centre4 ,already eyes are turning upward from the surrounding valleys to this mountain school4 ,the first words ,i heard on landing at ,spring ,city1 six miles away1 were in its praise3 ,they've got a mighty good school up thar4 ,such is the fact4 ,what is needed now to balance things is a mighty good school building4 ,if the insignificant frame structures which are hidden among the trees1 and only half supply the needs of the institution1 could be exchanged for a good1 roomy1 handsome edifice1 placed on the summit of the mountain1 where it would be visible for miles along the line of the ,cincinnati ,southern ,railroad1 besides being a benefaction to the cause1 it would be the best1 cheapest and most attractive advertisement of our mountain work1 conceivable4 ,it is to be hoped that someone will visit this beautiful spot ere long whose enthusiasm will not all run to words4 ,within easy reach of ,grand ,view are various churches flanked by their educational departments1 which will one day become tributary to the great central institution4 ,at one of these points1 ,deer ,lodge1 a fine church building is just nearing completion4 ,the community is all loyal to the ,american ,missionary ,association1 whose help it has received and appreciated4 ,a good many ,northerners are coming into this section1 induced by climate1 whose co-operation in his work ,mr4 ,pope is very prompt in securing4 ,glen ,mary is a mining settlement hidden in the oak forest about a mile from the above mentioned railroad4 ,here1 ,mr4 ,pope recently found a small ,sunday-school battling against great odds4 ,intemperance and profanity were rife1 and the demand for gospel labor was very urgent4 ,meetings were held with blessed results1 so that shortly ago a church was organized1 now one of the strongest in this region4 ,one consecrated young man is at the bottom of the whole movement4 ,two years ago1 he started a ,sunday-school with no assistance4 ,at first1 he met his pupils in the colored people's meeting house1 but was obliged to change after a time1 because of the prejudices of color which started among the blacks6 ,he then took an axe and cleared a spot in the woods to which he invited his school4 ,here ,mr4 ,pope found him4 ,after the interest began to grow1 a subscription was started among the miners1 resulting in money sufficient 7including help from the mining company7 to erect a comfortable little church edifice4 ,this building has recently been enlarged by one-third1 to accommodate the crowds4 ,the membership of the church is less than forty1 and yet it has raised one collection for the ,american ,missionary ,association amounting to twenty-four dollars6 ,these people have no pastor4 ,they are dependent on the scattering ministrations of two or three of our overworked missionaries from other points1 who have undertaken to supply them by turns4 ,there are one hundred and fifty families in the community1 fifty being colored1 without pastoral training4 ,i am assured that it would not be hard to raise money enough in the community to nearly1 if not quite1 support a minister4 ,the people are hungering and thirsting for teaching in spiritual things4 ,after repeated and urgent invitations your pilgrim was prevailed upon to suspend his trip for a day or two1 that he might tell these people of the good news of ,jesus ,christ4 ,it was evidently of the ,lord1 for last night at the first exhortation1 eight persons1 two men and six women1 gave themselves to the ,master4 ,the entire congregation seemed to hear the word with gladness4 the zeal of an apostle1 he is planting the cross of ,christ so firmly on this plateau1 and in such commanding positions1 that it cannot be dislodged1 but will shed its saving influence far and wide oldest has been to church three times during her life1 the others have never been4 ,they have never been to ,sabbath-school1 and know nothing about ,christ and ,god4 ,they have never in their lives heard the word ,bible4 ,the oldest one has seen a preacher three times--the same man each time4 ,they made their first visit to town1 and beheld the first railroad car yesterday4 ,they do not know who made them6 ,ever since their arrival ,i have been saying over and over1 ,surely we have ,africa at our very door4 ,i cannot realize it4 ,the responsibility is so great that it makes me tremble4 ,many of our pupils have little or no religious training at home4 ,we have a good many pupils whose parents are ,hard ,shell ,baptists1 and do not allow them to go to ,sabbath-school1 and teach them not to pray for forgiveness of sins4 ,a few afternoons ago1 the pupils were all asked what they desired to be4 ,one little boy raised his hand to say that he was going to be a ,hard ,shell minister1 for they the work that is being done by a class of our advanced boys and girls4 ,there are ten of them out in the wooded country1 teaching for three months those who cannot find their way to our school4 ,every two weeks1 these pupils come in to give a report of their work4 ,it is understood by them that it is a part of their duty to tell us just what work they do and how they do it4 ,we supply them with reading matter for their pupils--especially are we careful to let them have ,sunday-school books1 etc4 ,these pupils will be out of school three months1 and will then return to their school work4 ,every one who is out is a ,christian1 and we feel that their influence for good is very great4 ,it is a joy to us to feel that our little school here in this town is spreading its influence out into darker portions of the ,state4 ,each one of these pupils has no less than forty pupils in his school1 so that the work of the school here at ,marshallville reaches over six hundred souls6 ,this is ,,wilmington1 ,n4,c4 ,a densely packed church of white and colored people witnessed the closing exercises of the ,gregory ,institute1 a school of high grade for colored people founded and supported by the ,american ,missionary ,association1 and aided by ,mr4 ,gregory4 ,this school has been in operation some eighteen or twenty years1 and has done a most excellent work among the people it was designed to benefit4 ,the writer of this article has attended public exercises of the ,institute three times1 and has been each time impressed with the dignified and self-respecting deportment of the scholars and visitors4 ,the neat programme called for graduating essays from six girls--there were no boys in the class--and there were six songs rendered by the whole school1 or by the class1 and every one present agreed with ,dr4 ,pritchard when in his address he declared that such was the musical and literary excellence of the occasion that it would have done credit to any institution of learning in ,north ,carolina4 ,the address of ,dr4 ,pritchard was humorous1 practical and highly complimentary to the school1 and was received with much favor by the audience4 ,after the conferring of about dark1 where ,james ,brown1 a ,santee ,indian1 is stationed4 ,two of our ,santee school-girls are here1 and it was encouraging to see their neat dress1 and hear them use their ,english1 though they so seldom see any one with whom they have occasion to use it that it is not easy for them4 ,the next morning1 the girls had classes in reading and writing4 ,some of the children were ragged and dirty1 with faces unwashed1 and hair uncombed1 one little boy with both knees coming through his trousers1 but their faces were1 almost without exception1 bright and intelligent1 with the intelligence of childhood1 which would inevitably change to the stolid indifference of ignorance1 were it not for the influence which this ,christian household among them may exert4 ,to be sure1 the girls are come from here1 and the mode of life at their home has been modified by their influence4 ,we reached ,plum ,creek1 where ,edwin ,phelps is stationed1 about dark1 and after two long days' ride ,i was glad when bed time came4 ,ellen ,kitto and ,elizabeth ,winyan had come up from the ,cheyenne1 and ,i felt sure that ,elizabeth had given up her bed for me4 ,the next morning ,i asked ,ellen if we could go out to some of the houses1 but she said the people were all on the other side of the river1 that there was a dance there4 ,this was a disappointment to me1 as ,i wanted to see the homes of the people1 but after dinner ,edwin offered to take ,elizabeth1 ,ellen and me across the river to ,cherry ,creek1 so that ,i gained rather than lost4 ,,the ,,dance4 ,as we drew near the dance-house ,i could hear the monotonous yet rythmic beat of the drum1 and get glimpses through the door-way of the feathered heads moving in time to the music4 ,outside there was a crowd of women1 girls1 and young men1 the young men wrapped in white sheets under which they carry off1 and make love to1 the dusky maidens4 ,this is the way a ,titon makes love4 ,as a recent writer describes this dance1 bringing the church meeting1 and a ,cheyenne ,river branch church was established which still has connection with the mother church at ,oahe4 ,the school-room being too small for the afternoon communion service1 this was held out of doors4 ,there must have been a hundred and fifty present1 perhaps more4 ,first came a marriage ceremony1 then the admission of four new members1 and the baptism of two children4 ,probably four-fifths of the congregation had been drawn thither merely from curiosity1 and on the faces of many of these were the traces of yesterday's paint4 ,the simple service1 which the new communion set made perfect1 could not fail to impress them that there is something better than they have known4 ,at its close1 ,edwin ,phelps's scholars stood and sang ,whiter than ,snow1 in ,dakota4 ,have not those girls gained a great moral victory1 when in native dress1 with their shawls worn after the native fashion1 they stand up among their own people and proclaim themselves on the ,everything was an inch deep in dirt1 but we were welcomed to the shelter of the four walls1 and what was left of the roof4 ,the dirt did not matter4 ,we were already done in charcoal4 ,mr4 ,collins was here1 caught by the wind1 and before dark the ,agency farmer came4 ,it was impossible to cross the river in such a gale1 and here ,i knew we must stay4 ,the next morning was still and clear and beautiful4 ,it was difficult to realize that the elements had been on such a tear the day before1 so after breakfast we embarked for home1 going the seven miles by water this time1 and ,i reached the mission a gladder and a wiser woman4 ,this glimpse of out-station work is something ,i have long wanted1 and anyone who does not believe in ,indian education should see the results of it as they the emergencies in which we are called to act4 ,we get from others what we tell them we expect4 ,there is something in human nature that likes to be trusted with responsibility2 something in us that to deeds of valor4 ,it awakened a sense of responsibility and called forth their noblest service4 ,so our ,lord seems to be saying to ,american churches and to the constituency of this ,society1 ',ye are the light of the world4' ,on you depends the evangelization of these despised ,chinese4 ,treating them now contemptuously and now even brutally1 ye are called to be salt to them1 thus saving them from moral deterioration1 and inoculating them with the spirit of the ,gospel4 ,ye are to illuminate them with the light you have to shed as followers of ,christ1 and the responsibility is laid upon you to carry to them the principles of that faith which has given to us whatever excellence we have as a ,nation4 ,i expect you to ,christianize these representatives of the ,orient1 to convert them to the worship of the ,god of the ,bible4 ,in this expectation of the ,master1 lies at once our obligation and our privilege4 ,much is laid upon us1 but the trust brings with it honor1 and inspires to grandest service4 ,the progress already made in this work1 the cheering tokens of success that are reported by all laborers in this field1 ought to awaken a far greater sympathy for those in whose these people is but another chapter in our history on which other and larger hearted generations will look with shame and sorrow4 ,in the animosities born of our commercial greed1 we have acted as if of gracious success4 ,we have yet to learn to respect the manhood in these emigrants from the great kingdom beyond the ,pacific4 ,it is said of our ,lord1 when he came across the ,publican ,matthew1 sitting at the receipt of custom1 that he saw a man1 and it was oftentimes the lowly1 the shunned1 the socially despised he called to become his disciples4 ,it is a great art1 this of seeing in a man the ideal1 the possible man4 ,when ,jesus ,christ looks upon a man1 he looks him into a nobler manhood4 ,we need to rise above class distinctions1 to regard no one common or unclean1 to speak of no one as hopeless or worthless4 ,one word as to opportunity4 ,god always matches opportunity with ability1 and when we stand face to face with opportunity1 we must go forward or be recreant to every trust4 ,here is this man--the ,chinaman--on our coast1 for whom we are doing exactly the same work that this ,society has been urging us to do for the black race1 in raising up preachers amongst them to go back to the homes in their own country and there become the proper evangels to their own people4 ,when we realize that this is our work1 and this is the opportunity before us1 we shall talk of the ,chinese question with more seriousness4 ,we are like the two ,american boys4 ,one says to the other3 ,my father is a ,christian2 is your father a ,christian8 ,the other boy replies1 not wishing to be outdone1 ,oh1 yes1 my father is a ,christian1 but he is not working much at it just now4 ,that is about the way with this nation1 nominally a ,christian nation2 we are not working much at it in the way we are treating the ,indian1 ,chinese and colored man4 ,we want the nation to act out the principles it believes in4 ,mr4 ,gladstone said he divided the ,english nation into classes and masses4 ,the masses1 he added1 have as little regard for the doctrines of the ,gospel1 as the upper classes have for its precepts4 ,now we have not only to give the precepts of the ,gospel to the ,chinaman1 but we must inculcate its principles in the heart beyond all danger of eradication4 ,if we do not do this1 we shall act little better than the ,chinese do themselves4 ,a man was once asked ,it costs1 therefore1 a great deal to become a ,christian under such circumstances1 yet there are joyous1 devoted ,chinese ,christians preaching1 with signal power1 the ,gospel to their brethren1 and living so as to be ,christian luminaries among their idolatrous kindred4 ,i consider it no inferior part of this ,association's work that it is expending its efforts among the ,chinese now resident on the coast4 ,we have1 however1 only made a beginning2 much1 very much1 remains to be done4 ,we have to conquer political prejudices1 and invite to our faith with warmest welcomes those for whom ,jesus4 ,another hopeful thing is the zeal with which they attend to the duties of the ,band of ,hope4 ,our young people who are to teach in the country are quite determined to organize bands and to fight for ,god and home and native land1 on the line of temperance4 ,we have given all the instruction and illustrations we could1 and the little ones are becoming leaders of the older members in the families4 ,one little boy urged his old grandmother to stop using snuff1 and she has given it up after using it more than twoscore years4 ,she said he used to say1 ,don't chew1 grandma2 the teachers say it is poison4 ,some mothers who have been in the habit of using ruinous alcohol medicines for their children1 assured me they would stop it1 after seeing the amount of alcohol contained1 as was shown by our little experiments in evaporating and burning4 ,one young man of twenty years old passed an examination in the country1 and obtained a second grade certificate1 and at sixteen years of age he did not know his letters4 ,are there many boys at the ,north who can show a better record in four years8 ,h4,i4 ,,miller4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,macon1 ,,ga4 ,i am sure you want to hear about the closing exercises of our cooking class4 ,the teacher had given the seven girls comprising the class the privilege of getting a dinner and each one inviting a guest4 ,one of the lovely things about the affair was that the guests were the mothers and teachers of the girls4 ,so at three o'clock one day a company of eighteen sat down to a dinner that was all cooked and served by these girls4 ,the white1 puffy biscuits1 well-cooked meat and vegetables1 and the quiet lady-like serving1 all testified to the excellence of the instruction received4 ,prouder mothers ,i never saw than those who then partook of their daughter's cookery4 ,i was told that every ,saturday it had been the custom for the girls at home to repeat in their own kitchens the work of the day previous1 as it had been done under their teacher's instructions4 ,we hope next year with our boarding pupils to do more than we could with only day pupils4 ,our sewing classes are this week finishing their work for the year4 ,there has been sewing in five rooms4 ,the primaries have pieced blocks for outsides for two quilts1 over-hand work4 ,the next grade has put together four outsides 7running74 ,the upper classes have made fifty pillow-cases1 twelve sheets1 forty aprons1 hemstitched three tray cloths1 outlined one tidy and made three night-dresses4 ,darning1 button-hole making and hem-stitching were taught in one class4 ,the girls in another room have tied six comfortables4 ,the boys in the carpenter shop are doing excellent work1 and they like it very much4 ,one class of five or six come every morning at seven o'clock1 and they do this to get more instruction4 ,most of this class are country boys who cannot stay at school all of the year4 ,in one of the primary rooms1 we have the kitchen-garden material4 ,there1 with the twenty-four sets of toy dishes1 the little ones are taught how to set and clear off table1 and a great many useful things in reference to table manners and customs4 ,our general school work goes on like clock-work4 ,the children and young people are growing in their power of concentration and self-control1 and we feel greatly encouraged1 as we look into the future for them1 to hope that at no very distant day a well ordered home1 where three meals a day shall be served in a refined1 orderly manner1 shall not be so rare a thing as it now is4 ,we are more and more convinced that the home life of these people must be changed1 if they are ever to be what we want them to be1 and what1 for the interests of our country and for the coming of ,christ's kingdom on earth1 they must be4 ,and now ,i will close in the usual way by telling you some of our needs4 ,for the new boarding department1 we shall need bedding of all kinds4 ,i especially want that each mattress shall be furnished with a quilted or padded cover--that is1 something as large as the mattress on top4 ,towels1 table linen and such things as are needed in every house are always acceptable4 little people would answer the question themselves4 ,my pupils1 with one exception1 being day scholars1 ,i have had an excellent opportunity to know the colored people4 ,i go to their homes2 some ,i find as cosy and prettily fitted up as the average home at the ,north1 while others are miserable apologies for the name4 ,i often1 ,sunday afternoons1 take a bundle of papers and go through some of the streets where ,i find boys playing ball or marbles1 and flying kites4 ,when ,i ask why they haven't been to ,sunday-school1 or at home reading1 they tell me they have no clothes1 and that they have nothing to read at home2 as ,i distribute the papers1 they lay down bat and ball and eagerly devour the stories and study the pictures4 ,i find some very bright little fellows among them4 ,i
