blessed thing that one can plant his    
benevolences in some special institution

influences are to follow on after the   
giver has gone to a higher world4 ,but

 to keep step with the providences of   
,god in their church contributions4  ,it
 is also true that some fear that the   
day of ,,legacies is to come to an end4 
,indeed1 there are those who take a     
solemn comfort in bewailing and fearing 
that everything is to come to an end4   
,they mix a pound of forebodings with an
 ounce of faith4 ,if1 for some unseen   
reasons in the movements of life and    

death1 legacies do not appear with the  
regularity of insurance tables1 they    
think the day of legacies is dead4      
,nevertheless legacies will continue as 
long as ,christians pass from earth to  
heaven4 ,there will always be faithful  
souls who will remember ,christ and his 
cause in their wills4 ,there will always
 be those who may not be able to divide 
their estates and to dispose of portions
 of them while they live1 who will yet  
provide that they may see their works   
following them1 when they shall look    
down from a world redeemed1 to a world  
for whose redemption ,christ lived and  
died4 ,there will always be legacies1   
and the ,american ,missionary           
,association1 so long as it follows in  
the steps of ,christ in such mission as

legacies will come1 because they ought

remember this work in their wills

celebrating the one hundredth           
anniversary of its ,constitution--a     
,constitution that has been tried and   
found worthy4  ,the greatest strain to  
which this great charter has been       
subjected in the past hundred years has 
been occasioned by slavery4 ,the crisis 
cost untold blood and treasure4 ,the    
great strain of the next hundred years  
will be what slavery has left behind    
it--a vast and growing black population1
 and an imbittered race prejudice4      
,there is but one way to meet this      
strain of the coming century1 and that  
is by the education of the blacks4 ,the 

task is great1 but if the ,american     
people will awake to its urgency and put
 forth the needed effort1 the crisis may
 be averted4 ,we call upon all          
,christian people1 and upon all         
patriots1 to begin this new century with
 the purpose to increase their          
contributions for this great object4 ,we

there are two ,congregational           
,organizations in the ,state of         
,georgia4 ,the ,georgia ,congregational 
,association was organized in #ahgh1 and
 is composed of about a dozen colored   
churches1 some of their pastors being   
white and some colored4 ,the ,united    
,congregational ,conference of ,georgia 
was formed a little more than a year    
ago1 is a much larger body1 and is      

composed of white pastors and churches4 
,with a view to a possible union of     
these two organizations1 committees have
 been appointed by each1 and1 in another
 column1 we lay before our readers the  
propositions to that end1 made by the   
,committee of the ,georgia ,association4
 ,we cannot withhold our expression of  
satisfaction with the ,christian spirit 
exhibited in this document1 and the     
readiness to accept any possible        
alternative to secure the union4 ,the   
,congregational ,churches of the country
 will feel an interest in marking the   
progress of these negotiations1 and will
 hail with delight a consummation that  
will relieve the denomination from the  
embarrassment of sanctioning two        
organizations in the same ,state that   
seem to be separated only by the

,there is no question in my mind but    

that ,nashville is the educational      
leader in the ,south4 ,it is a city of

 are the beginnings of greater and      
better days for this part of our        
country4 ,my duties have taken me to    
,fisk ,university4 ,it is a college     
which has justly won very high praise4  
,jubilee and ,livingstone ,halls are    
significant names4 ,one speaks of an    
historic event1 and the other of an     
historic person1 but the work that goes 
on in both these large buildings does no
 dishonor to one name or the other4

,when ,congressman ,kelley1 of          
,pennsylvania1 was in ,nashville1 he    
visited ,fisk ,university4 ,he          
afterwards told me that he could not    
conceal his surprise at what he saw and 
heard and only with difficulty his      
emotion when he arose to address the    
students4  ,i have now visited ,fisk    
several times4 ,i am each time more     

impressed with the fidelity and quality 
of the work on the part of the students1
 and the patient enthusiasm of the      
professors and of the teachers4 ,if     
there were to be no other or greater    
results than those of the past and the  
present1 all that has been done for     
,fisk ,university would be justified4

,from ,nashville to ,sparta1 ,tenn41 and
 then a rough1 tough ride up the        
mountain side1 rattling the bones over  
the stones until at length we have      
climbed the ,cumberland ,plateau4 ,we   
arrive at no-where in particular1 which 
is named ,pleasant ,hill4 ,here are a   
neat church1 which is both church and   
school1 and a sightly building of two   
stories with a third under the mansard  
roof1 which will accommodate forty boys4
 ,a few houses are visible from the top 
of this building1 but no one could guess
 where forty mountain boys and as many  
girls might be living4 ,nevertheless    
they have been discovered1 and it was   

none too soon4 ,missionary ,dodge did   
not locate in ,pleasant ,hill before the
 time4 ,he realized this4 ,he looked    
about him and looked up and down4 ,he   
saw things which were invisible4 ,he saw
 castles in the air4 ,it must be        
confessed that the office at ,reade     
,street1 fearing lest it might trust the
 churches too much1 had not the faith   
which could take hold of these castles  
in the air and anchor them to the soil  
of ,pleasant ,hill2 but ,brother ,dodge 
got his grapples out and pulled down a  
church building from the heavens4 ,well 
done2 now surely he should rest from his
 labors and give himself and us time to 
breathe4 ,no2 a visible church only     
stimulated his faith1 it did not satisfy
 it4 ,this church was a place in which  
he could read the eleventh chapter of   
,hebrews every ,sunday4 ,the result was 
the ,hall for young men and for the     
teachers4 ,now we are in it and are     
glad4 ,the ,massachusetts ,principal    
gave us welcome1 the ,oberlin           

,vice-,principal endorsed it1 while the 
,matron materialized the spirit of      
welcome in a way calculated to excite   
gratitude1 from the fact that           
missionaries cannot live absolutely on  
faith4  ,next the young men were        
introduced4 ,one of them was seized with
 undisguised curiosity to behold a      
minister whose theological system some  
institution had found it necessary to   
doctor4 ,it is1 perhaps1 the first      
instance on record in modern times where
 these semi-lunar fardels have been     
looked upon with respect and curiosity4 
,when ,brother ,dodge came1             
congratulations were in order over his  
,church1 his ,school and his ,hall1 but 
he would have none of it4 ,he was seeing
 another building floating in the       
clouds1 and could only talk of the      
invisible4 ,it will1 however1 soon be   
among things visible1 for the missionary
 has his grapples out4 ,it is to be a   
,boarding ,hall and ,industrial ,home   
for girls who will come into it and     

learn to live and to be4 ,but1 ,pleasant
 ,hill is not a town1 it is not a       
village1 it is only by courtesy a       
hamlet4 ,where are your pupils8 ,the    
woods are full of them and they will    
come from near and from far1 replies    
their young missionary of more than     
three score and ten years4 ,on ,sunday1 
the church was filled2 on ,monday1 the  
school was full2 and our heart was full 
of thanksgiving that ,god had come to   
these mountain people1 that hope would  
enter their lives and their cabins1 and 
that these boys and girls would now step
 up in ,christian manhood and womanhood4

which a visit to an institution like    
,fisk ,university is sure to excite1 is 
the relation of all this work to the    
future4 ,apropos of this1 the ,rev4     
,j4,o4,a4 ,clark1 ,d4,d41 ,,ll4,d41 of  
,macon1 ,ga41 has just written a little 
tract of fifty pages on ,the ,future of 
the ,races4 ,he does not vote in ,new   

,england1 nor is he a ,yankee2 but he is
 a good and true witness4 ,he says1 that
 the ,races are running races along the 
paths of knowledge and up the hills of  
science4 ,these are his words 7pages #ai
 and #bj73 ,have they the colored people
 availed themselves of the educational  
facilities8 ,have they profited by them8
 ,we answer that they have been         
incalculably benefited4 ,they have shown
 not only that they can receive         
education1 but education of a high      
order4 ,their improvement has been so   
astonishing as to silence doubt and     
caviling4 ,our ,southern eyes have been 
opened to see it4 ,southern candor is   
free to admit it4 ,there are none who do
 not admit it but the hopelessly        
prejudiced4 ,i am persuaded that the    
average examinations in the colored     
schools are better than the average in  
the white schools1 for teachableness is 
the basis of all education1 and this    
universally distinguishes the negro4    
,dr4 ,clark is not saying that the white

 boy may not learn more easily and      
master more rapidly1 but rather is      
telling how the hare came out second in 
the race with his competitor not so     
fleet of foot1 but which had the gift of
 patient continuance in well-doing4     
,still he accentuates the fact that     
their improvement is astonishing4 ,i am 
sure that no one can visit ,fisk        
,university without having all his      
doubts dispersed as to the future of the
 negro race4 ,it is to have a future4   
,this leads me to quote the closing     
words of ,dr4 ,clark's significant      
pamphlet 7page #eb73 ,all ,africa       
stretches out her hands to ,god2 to the 
work of delivering her fatherland from  
heathenism4 ,god is calling the blacks  
of these ,southern ,states4 ,they are to
 be the chief instruments in giving the 
,gospel of ,christ to the benighted land
 of their fathers4 ,wherefore1 let the  
work of ,christian1 and so sanctified1  
education go on4  ,all this is true1 and
 it means that in our ,american         

,missionary ,association the ministerial
 education must now be made more        
prominent4 ,when white missionaries can 
say1 as one whose bones are in the soil 
of the ,dark ,continent did say1 ,let a 
thousand fall before ,africa shall be   
given up1 the children of ,africa must  
respond1 ,africa shall be evangelized by
 ,africans4 ,that is1 we must have more 
and better theological schools for the  
,negro people4 ,the demand for educated 
,negro ministers1 who know what religion
 is1 and what purity is1 will be greater
 and greater4  ,the demand for          
missionaries of the negro race who can  
realize that ,christianity is a         
missionary religion1 will be greater1   
also4 ,we can scarcely expect that those
 who came out of ,egypt will become     
missionaries to ,egypt4 ,the            
apprehension of missionary              
responsibility comes with a developed   
,christianity4 ,the missionary sense    
came to the ,apostles themselves very   
slowly4 ,it came to the ,christian      

,church slowly4 ,the ,african people in 
,america1 ,i trust1 will seize upon it  
more rapidly1 for they have a large     
emotional nature and great faith4 ,what 
they now need is education and          
intellectual character1 and those       
qualities which give shape1 and tone1   
and persistence1 to the forces which    
direct and control events4  ,men who    
have been slaves may not take on this1  
and their children may not in great     
numbers4 ,but their children's children 
are coming on multitudinously1 and from 
them must go those who shall preach the 
,gospel to their own race in ,africa4   
,for psychological as well as           
physiological reasons this must be4 ,not
 only because they can live1 and whites 
cannot1 in ,africa1 but because1 other  
things being equal1 they can do this    
work better with their own race4 ,said  
,christ1 ,go home to thy friends1 and   
tell what great things the ,lord hath   
done for thee4  ,all of which says that 
the ,fisk must now add to its great work

 a thorough theological school1 and must
 urge its students to listen to the     
voice of ,god and to answer when ,god   
calls1 ,speak1 ,lord1 thy servant       
heareth4 ,more and better ministers are 
needed both for ,africa in the ,united  
,states and ,africa across the sea4 ,he 
will give wisely who will give quickly

 ,northern visitor in the ,south1       
writing in a recent number of ,the      
,advance speaks of the rapid improvement
 of the ,negroes in that locality4 ,he  
says that the ,negro is prosperous2 that
 commercially he is honest2 that one    
house has had no less than thirteen     
hundred names of colored people on its  
books1 each having a credit from a few  
dollars to forty or more2 that the      
,negro respects education--even if he is
 unable to read himself1 he wants1 with 
all the determination of his soul1 that 
his children shall be educated2 that the
 merchants say that they are buying     

better and better goods1 are learning   
the value of money1 are exercising wiser
 judgment1 are becoming farmers and     
mechanics1 are becoming better men4     
,these items1 taken from a long article1
 show the bright light glowing in that  
locality4 ,of course the writer gives   
some dark touches to the picture1 and   
thus modified1 it may be repeated of    
thousands of places throughout the      
,south4 ,some of our friends1 we fear1  
look too much upon the dark side4 ,there
 is a dark side1 and it is dense4 ,but  
if we can only continue and enlarge the 
sphere of these bright spots1 and kindle
 others in new localities1 the time will
 come when the light will displace the  
darkness and the dawn of a new era will 
come4 ,friends of the ,negro race1      
patriots and ,christians6 furnish the   
oil for these bright spots and help to  
multiply them4         99       99

,on the #acth of ,march1 some of the    

,secretaries of the missionary          
societies1 and others interested in the 
welfare of the ,indians1      had an    
interview with ,president ,harrison and 
with ,secretary      ,noble1 of the     
,interior ,department4 ,we were kindly  
received1 and      the ,secretary       
solicited information from us as to the 
methods in      which he could aid in   
furtherance of ,indian civilization4 ,a 
number of suggestions were made in      
response1 and the following      outline
 is given as a summary of the points    
presented to the      ,secretary3  #a4  
,that the appointment or retention of   
all officers and employs in the ,indian 
service of the ,government shall be on  
the sole ground of fitness--that        
ability1 integrity and an interest in   
the welfare of the ,indians1 shall      
constitute the only required conditions4
 ,we are not ignorant of the            
difficulties involved in securing such  
persons1 especially with the low        
salaries paid to some of these employs2 

and we shall be abundantly satisfied    
with the purpose of the ,government to  
reach the nearest attainable success in 
this direction4  #b4 ,that the          
,government shall make adequate         
appropriations for the establishment and
 maintenance of suitable schools for the
 education of all ,indian               
pupils--whether these schools be        
sustained and controlled wholly by the  
,government or in co-operation with     
missionary societies4 ,the millions of  
dollars now due to the ,indians by      
treaty stipulations1 for educational    
purposes1 should not be idle in the     
,national ,treasury1 but should1 as     
rapidly as possible1 be devoted to their
 legitimate purposes1 and they should be
 supplemented as far as need be by      
direct grants from the ,government4  #c4
 ,that the co-operation of the          
,government with the missionary         
societies in what are known as ,contract
 schools should be continued and        
enlarged4 ,we believe that no better    

teaching has been afforded to the       
,indians than that given in these       
,contract schools4 ,the educational     
qualifications of the teachers1 together
 with their disinterested and           
self-denying characters and their       
religious influence and instruction1    
render them pre-eminently fit for their 
places and successful in their work4    
,the experience of the past and the     
testimony of all unprejudiced persons   
bear witness to this fact4  #d4 ,that   
compulsory education of ,indian pupils  
be enforced1 with liberty of choice to  
the parents in the selection of the     
schools to which their children shall be
 sent4 ,the ,indians are generally      
averse1 or indifferent1 to the education
 of their children4 ,the withholding of 
rations in case of failure or neglect is
 usually an all-sufficient motive for   
prompt compliance4 ,then1 too1 the      
parent1 if a ,christian and intelligent1
 should be allowed to select the school 
for his child1 and not be compelled to  

send it to a ,government school simply  
because that may happen to be nearest4  
#e4 ,the ,government should adopt a     
liberal policy in regard to the use of

closed against this ,christian woman    
because she was trying to save the poor 
and ignorant6 ,and it is eighteen       
hundred and eighty-nine of the

,but this plucky ,yankee girl did not so

boarding place in the home of one of our

tramps across these two miles twice a

services1 to bring light into the dense

connection with this incident of narrow

appointed a special committee to        
consider and report upon the subject of 
the admission of negro clergymen and    
laymen as members of that body4 ,their  

action was taken with the view of       
bringing the ,charleston churches1 if   
possible1 into harmony with the other   
,episcopal congregations of the ,state4 
,in #ahhg1 the former had seceded in    
consequence of the adoption of a        
resolution which the ,charleston        
brethren regarded as a virtual          
obliteration of the color-line4         
,thursday1 the report of the committee  
was made public4 ,it proposes a separate
 convocation for the colored churches   
under the ministration of the bishop1   
and consents to the admission to the    
,convention of colored clergymen who    
have been associated with the church for
 twelve months prior to ,may1 #ahhi4 ,if
 the report is adopted1 three negro     
ministers will sit as members1 but no   
lay delegates will be eligible4 ,the    
committee were willing to forego their  
prejudice out of deference to the holy  
office4 ,they felt that the color of a  
clergyman's skin1 although it was no    
doubt a very serious ground of objection

 when it happened to be black1 should   
not overcome the respect due to the     
sanctity of his official calling4 ,his  
cloth1 so to speak1 saved him1 and what 
would have been denied to the man it was
 possible to concede to the priest4     
,under these circumstances the gravity  
of the question1 ,do colored folks      
retain their complexion when they go to 
heaven8 is obvious4 ,the concession     
which the committee of the ,diocesan    
,convention make is but a re-affirmation
 of the ,charleston brethren's aversion 
to anything that smacks of an approach  
to association of the two races on terms
 of equality4 ,if there are colored     
saints in ,paradise1 it will be utterly 
impossible for the ,charleston white    
saints of the ,episcopal denomination to
 feel at home there4 ,the only chance of
 reconciling them to a heaven so        
liberally disposed would depend on the  
adoption of some such plan as that      
recommended by the committee as a modus 
vivendi in the church on earth4 ,that is

 to say1 if the colored saints were     
corraled by themselves--if their        
convocations were separate from the     
convocations of the white saints--if    
they were not admitted to the white     
circles of celestial society as equal   
partakers of the privileges of the      
heavenly kingdom--the ,caucasian angels 
from ,charleston might be willing to    
pass their eternity in such a place4

therefore1 to know whether there are in 
fact any colored saints in heaven2 and1 
if there are1 whether the divisions of  
the ,father's house into many mansions  
admits of an arrangement whereby the

contemplate a future life with any

some cases of conversion taking place   
during the week of prayer4  ,i came to  
,montgomery three weeks ago1 and a      
revival there has surpassed any ,i have 
seen for the last thirteen years among  
the colored folks of the ,south4 ,in    
fact1 many of the old-time people say   
they never saw such a deep interest     
manifested in this city4 ,the third     
night the church was filled to          
overflowing1 and hundreds were outside  
the door who could not get in4 ,the     
power of ,god came down upon the people 

in such a way that at the close of the  
preaching the seekers fairly ran to the 
front benches1 taking them by storm4    
,all around the front they sat or knelt4
 ,we placed chairs in rows on the       
platform1 and the crowd was so thick ,i 
could scarcely get a place to stand4

the ,christians1 worked hard among the  
unconverted1 and now at the close of the
 three weeks' services1 more than two   
hundred are rejoicing in a new found    
hope4  ,one case was that of a young    
man1 the son of a ,methodist preacher1  
both deaf and dumb1 who gave reasonable 
evidence of conversion as the love of   
,god filled his heart1 and another was a
 young man who had been a wild young    
fellow1 who had at the time of his      
conversion a five barrel loaded revolver
 in his pocket1 and which ,i now have4  
,one whole family is now rejoicing that 
,god has brought salvation to that      
house2 father1 mother1 son and four     
daughters are among the converts4       

,another father rejoices over four of   
his sons and daughters converted4       
,husbands and wives have started        
together on the road to ,zion4 ,on the  
streets and wherever you go1 the people 
are talking about1 and rejoicing over1  
the conversion of some of their friends

winter's work among the dear colored    
people1 which has been one of the       
happiest and most successful ,i have

their work in a pleasant ,northern      
parish1 and came to ,fisk ,university1  
where they have labored together for    

almost twenty-two years4 ,during these

an efficient helper to her husband and a
 wise and tender mother to her children1
 but has contributed much to the work of
 the school4 ,her strong mind and fine  
intellectual tastes especially fitted   
her for life in an institution of       
learning4 ,during the last few years1   
she gave much time and labor to the     
preparation of a botanical collection   
for the ,scientific ,department of the  
,university4  ,mrs4 ,bennett was also   
the warm personal friend of the young   
people4 ,since her death1 many tender   
expressions from present and former     
students bear witness to appreciation of
 her quiet1 earnest1 ,christian         
character1 as manifested both in her own
 life1 and in her ministry to others4   
,why such a life1 apparently so         
indispensable to her husband and        
children1 and so helpful to a large body
 of young people1 should be thus        
suddenly terminated we cannot

 tuition in this school was one dollar

small wages that a woman who was

services more and more valuable as ,i   
became more enlightened1 for1 during the
 four years1 my wages were increased

wages increased1 ,i had more tuition to 
pay also1 for during my study in the    
night school ,i had several teachers and
 paid some of them as much as two       
dollars per month1 and so anxious was ,i
 to acquire an education that ,i would  
have paid five dollars had it been      
required1 even at a time when it would  
have taken all my wages to do so4 ,while
 ,i was a student in one of these night 
schools1 ,i chanced one day to see a    
newspaper which a colored man who knew  
me had thrown into the yard for me4 ,in 
this paper ,i read an article telling   
about ,emerson ,institute1 a school of  
the ,american ,missionary ,association1 
and the commencement exercises soon to  
occur there4 ,the school had been in    
,mobile for several years1 but ,i had   
heard nothing of it till now4 ,as soon  

as ,i read of these exercises1 ,i       
determined to see them1 for ,i had never
 heard of such exercises before4 ,when  
the time came1 ,i went one night1       
accompanied by a few of my fellow       
night-school students4 ,we were well    
pleased with what we saw1 and ,i said to
 them that ,i meant to enter that school
 when it opened the next fall1 and that 
,i meant to be an educated man if ,i    
could4 ,i soon began to carry out my    
purpose1 for in a few weeks ,i left my  
employment in that family and went back 
into the country1 from whence ,i had    
gone to ,mobile1 and took the           
examination and began teaching public

enough to go back to ,mobile and become 
a pupil of ,emerson ,institute1 not in

 ever feel grateful to the man who threw

to me is the memory of those days during

night-school1 where the key was put into
 my hand and the door of knowledge was

,i was led to ,christ and felt called to

uneducated colored ministers preach and 
they had endeavored to lead me to       
,christ1 but ,i could not accept ,christ
 in the way they had presented ,him to  
me4 ,i remember well how they told us   
that in order to find ,christ we must   
fast and pray for a number of days4 ,i  
remember1 too1 the unsuccessful attempt 
which ,i made to give myself to ,jesus  
in this way4 ,i was a farm boy and was  

plowing hard every day1 and it was hard 
work for a boy of my age to follow the  
mule all day in the tough grass1 and ,i 
always felt like eating when meal time  
came1 but still ,i tried to become a    
,christian by doing as the minister said
 ,i must1 and so for a few days ,i ate  
no breakfast1 no dinner1 and no supper1 
though ,i worked on4 ,they told us1     
also1 that we must not go to bed at     
night1 for if we did the wicked one     
would make us sleep all night and we    
would fail to pray through the night1   
and they said we must pray all night4   
,for several nights ,i did not go to bed
 at all1 but would lie down upon the    
doorstep that ,i might get up often     
through the night and go down the hill  
to pray1 for we were instructed to go   
down in the valley4 ,of course after a  
few days ,i became tired1 sleepy and    
discouraged1 and gave up4 ,i did not    
make another attempt till ,i became a   
student in ,emerson ,institute4 ,one of 
the lady teachers in that school became 

interested in my soul's salvation4 ,she 
read the ,bible to me1 talked to me1 and
 prayed for me1 and made the way of life
 and salvation seem so plain and simple 
that it was not long before ,i accepted 
the ,lord ,jesus as my ,saviour4  ,my   
heart overflows with gratitude to that  
,christian lady whenever ,i think of my 
conversion4 ,there is no favor which one
 person can do for another so great as  
that of leading him to ,christ4  ,soon  
after ,i was converted ,i felt inclined 
to enter the ministry1 and was advised  
to go to ,talladega ,college and there  
take a theological course4 ,i wanted to 
go but did not see any way to get there1
 to say nothing of how ,i was to stay   
there1 but a lady from the ,north had   
been visiting one of our lady teachers  
at ,mobile1 and heard me deliver an     
oration in a prize contest4 ,she said   
she liked it1 and after she went back   
home she sent me #be to help me in my

way might open for me to go to

 money in getting ready and in going to

began to attend the day school at ,fort 

,berthold1 and although he was over     
twenty years old and not very quick to  
learn1 he surpassed the younger pupils  
by his industry4 ,he attended the day   
school1 in the day time or in the       
evening1 quite regularly during the     
winter1 and became a help to the        
missionary in translating parts of      
,scripture into the ,gros-,ventre       
language4  ,he wore his long hair       
braided behind1 and banged and plastered
 with clay in front so that it stood    
upright1 and he dressed in blanket1     
breech clout1 leggings and moccasins1   
and the lower joints of several of his  
fingers were cut off in accordance with 
the ,indian custom of mutilating        
themselves at the burial of a friend4   
,his first appearance to a new teacher  
who came the following spring caused her
 no little trepidation1 but she soon    
learned to prize him as her best pupil1 
and the next year the influence of      
,god's word upon him was seen by his    
saying1 after recounting some of his    

,gros-,ventre religious fables1 in which
 his belief had been shaken2 ,i have    
been coming to school now more than a   
year4 ,since reading these books about  
,god and angels ,i cannot sleep at      
night1 but have had dreams4 ,i think    
some harm will come to me4 ,i am poor   
and cannot help myself1 but ,i pray ,god
 to keep me from harm1 and ,i want to   
trust him4  ,from that time on1 we hoped
 he would take a decided stand for      
,christ4 ,as yet1 none among his people 
had been converted4 ,a few passages of  
the ,bible and a few words of song had  
been given to the ,gros-,ventres in     
their own tongue1 and every ,sabbath    
there were attentive ,indian listeners1 
but would there ever be a ,gros-,ventre 
convert8 ,the ,bear's ,tooth continued  
to come to us1 and learned to understand
 quite fully the requirements of our    
faith4 ,he became a trusted helper in   
charge of the mission cattle and the    
milking1 working regularly as few       
,indians would do at ,berthold1 and he  

soon had stock of his own in which he   
took great pleasure4 ,he read the ,bible
 on ,sabbath afternoons with one who was
 soon called to her reward2 it was      
almost her last prayer that he might be 
saved4 ,he came in spite of dissuasions1
 jeers1 and even persecutions from his  
people1 and yet he took no stand for    
,christ4 ,three years after1 there were 
,indian inquirers1 and he helped to     
explain to them the demands of ,christ1 
but they all felt that the way was too  
hard for them and went away sorrowful4  
,some of the young people who had been  
taken away to school and removed from   
the opposition of their people had      
confessed ,christ1 but there were none  
to face it here and say that they loved 
him4 ,the ,bear's ,tooth took a wife in 
the ,indian way1 unwilling to marry1 and
 removed1 as it seemed1 away from our   
influence1 to a claim forty miles up the
 river from our mission station4  ,but  
,god dealt with him and afflicted him in
 the loss of his babes1 and of his      

stock1 so that he said1 ,it seems as    
though ,i could acquire nothing4        
,explain it to me2 the ,indians say it  
is because ,i follow your teaching4 ,i  
taught him from the book of ,job1 and   
the words of ,christ4 ,his soul was     
hungry1 and when he came once in two    
weeks for his government rations1 he    
sought the bread of life at the mission4
 ,finally1 after nearly eight years1 one
 summer day he came and sat on a bench  
in the shade of the house in a little   
flower garden1 and after we had talked  
awhile1 he said to the missionary3 ,good
 ,voice1 now ,i can2 ,i will be faithful
 to my own wife1 ,i will keep ,sunday1  
,i will pray and avoid the dances and   
other heathen customs2 when you think   
best ,i will come down and be received  
into the church4 ,that was a glad       
moment4 ,to clasp the hand of the first 
,gros-,ventre brother in ,christ1 won   
through a strange tongue and from a     
people who had sat in darkness for      
eighteen hundred years since the great

,bring your wife and friends with you to
 ,christ4 ,he went home but soon        
returned1 saying sorrowfully3 ,my wife  
and my friends are none of them willing4
 ,if ,i join ,i think it must be alone4

old1 and he had no natural              
attractiveness of appearance2 but in a  
simple1 manly1 determined way1 he made  
his confession and was baptized before  
an audience of ,indians in the little

,indian1 but another ,daniel standing   
alone4  ,then1 as the man of ,gergesa1  
he went home to tell his neighbors what 
,god had done for him4 ,he had a ,bible 
in ,dakota1 of which language he        
understood something1 and a few         
,gros-,ventre translations in writing1  
and some attempts at hymns1 and some    
pictures4 ,with these he preached1 in   
neighbors' houses1 and then he would    
report to me of his reception1 and ask  

me questions about the ,christian life4 
,a veritable man ,friday had come to me2
 ,i was no longer alone4 ,then why did  
his health fail1 and he forty miles away
 where ,i could not see him8 ,but so    
,god willed4 ,soon they brought me the  
word3 ,your friend has gone4 ,i gathered
 up his last words1 questioning his wife
 and lame old father4 ,he wanted to see 
his friend and tell him some things4 ,he
 thought he did see him come in and then
 go out before he could speak4 ,he said1
 ,i thought it was difficult1 but ,i    
joined with those who pray1 and ,i find 
now it is only a short way4 ,i am going 
above4 ,with his last breath and his    
,bible open1 he asked to be shown the   
way1 that he might go in it4  ,the      
influence of a genuine life is strongest
 at home1 and so it comes that the wife 
is seeking to follow her husband4 ,there
 are other converts with us now1 but we 
shall never forget this first

 two peculiarly impressive occasions2   
one the anniversary on the #agth of last
 month1 of the ,chinese school1         
established by ,dr4 ,pond2 the other the
 reception1 on the #c;d instant1 of six 
,chinese brethren to church membership4 
,to appreciate the significance of these
 scenes1 one must remember how          
contemptuous is the prejudice which     
prevails on this coast against these    
inoffensive strangers4  ,nine or ten    
young ,chinamen delivered addresses at  
the anniversary4 ,they spoke with       
remarkable simplicity1 perspicuity and  
accuracy of ,english pronunciation4 ,in 

view of their perfect self-possession   
and propriety of manner in the presence 
of the crowded congregation1 one could  
scarcely realize that nearly all of them
 were utterly inexperienced in public   
speaking4 ,the success of these humble  
representatives gave a hint of the      
possibilities of a ,christianized       
,china4 ,one of the speakers gave an    
account of the conversion1 sickness1    
death and ,christian burial of a member 
of the school1 a youth of eighteen4 ,the
 heathen relatives and friends had      
attributed the illness to the boy's     
desertion of the religion of his        
fathers1 and had begged him to allow the
 burning of idolatrous incense4 ,but he 
had calmly resisted their appeals1 and1 
in an alien land1 far from his father   
and mother1 had pillowed his dying head 
on the breast of the ,saviour of        
mankind4  ,low ,quong1 who superintends 
the mission1 and who is true-hearted1   
prudent and influential with his        
countrymen1 showed with clearness1 the  

relation between the conversion of the  
,chinese in ,california and the         
evangelization of ,china4 ,it was news  
to many of his hearers that the         
,christian ,chinese of ,america are     
supporting native missionaries of their 
own in ,china4  ,the recitation by the  
school in concert of some of the        
sweetest and most familiar of the       
,psalms and ,scriptural promises1 melted
 the hearts of the hearers into         
sympathy4 ,the old truths borrowed a new
 tenderness and emphasis from these     
voices accustomed to recite heathen     
prayers4 ,the pupils sang in solo1 in   
duet and in chorus4 ,when ,over the     
,ocean ,wave was rendered1 some of us   
queried in our minds on which side of   
the ocean wave ,god thinks the poor     
heathen live--the side from which these 
gentle friends have come1 or the side   
where their countrymen receive such     
unchristian welcome8  ,nothing could    
more effectually knock in the head mean 
prejudice than the grateful words and   

kind spirit which characterized this    
anniversary4 ,whatever may be the       
prospect of the ,chinese over-running   
us1 they certainly had us that ,sunday  
evening4 ,mrs4 ,sheldon1 who has had    
large experience in the work1 and ,miss 
,watson1 are devoting themselves to the 
mission with a beautiful fidelity and   
consecration4  ,dr4 ,pond1 who conducted
 the anniversary service1 closed with an
 address only too brief1 but most       
felicitous and convincing4 ,to the      
opponents of ,chinese immigration he is 
accustomed to reply3 ,can there be any  
better way of keeping the ,chinese at   
home than to have it known among the    
fathers in ,china that their sons1 if   
they come to this country1 are likely to
 be ,christianized8  ,nothing could be  
sweeter or more cordial than the spirit 
of welcome with which the six ,chinese  
brethren were received into covenant4   
,not an officer or member breathed an   
objection to their reception4 ,had there
 been in any heart any lurking          

,phariseeism concerning them1 it would  
have been rebuked1 if not exorcised1 by 
hearing them sing with us at the ,lord's
 table1 in broken accents1 ,rock of     
,ages1 by observing their devout bearing
 and by witnessing the affecting        
baptismal scene4 ,these brethren came to
 the church approved by ,dr4 ,pond1 by  
the ,chinese missionary1 ,low ,quong1   
and by the vote of the ,christian

features of the festival was the reading
 of little papers1 telling how the      
pennies grew4 ,and we are going to let  
the children see some of these very     
papers4 ,for all this is exactly true1  
and took place in a pleasant village in 
the ,state of ,new ,york4  ,about ten   
dollars grew out of a little more than  
twenty pennies4 ,we have not room to    
publish all the little papers1 telling  
how the pennies grew into dollars1      
though all are of great interest4 ,in   
some cases the original penny was       
invested1 and then turned over and over4
 ,this is an instance3  ,with the       
original cent ,i bought some            
darning-cotton and darned stockings1    
some for a cent a stocking1 but most of 
them for a cent a hole4 ,i then bought  
thread and crocheted some lace which ,i

all the string they could find and made

,meda made a ruche for grandma1         
crocheted lace1 and speculated in

,davie1 ,meda's brother1 found a        
generous customer in grandpa1 who bought
 a pen-holder and then gave it back to  
be sold over again4 ,davie also         
speculated in tallow1 and increased his 
penny to #ej cents4  ,helen invested in 
a penny tablet1 sold it for #c cents1   
and crept up by degrees to the place    
where she could buy material for an     
apron which she sold for #ce cents4 ,she
 made another apron and a tidy1 and     
cleared #ee cents4  ,lulu bought a penny
 rubber and sold it for #b cents1 bought
 darning cotton1 pins1 cloth for apron1 
etc41 and increased her penny to #ej    
cents4  ,the pennies have been growing1 
and that is good4 ,but love has been    
growing too1 in these young hearts1 and
