security is thought to be threatened by ignorance among the electors1 the obvious remedy is education4 ,the ,southern situation has been vigorously discussed in the last few months on the platform1 and in the magazines and newspapers1 and the conclusion to which the minds of thoughtful men is rapidly coming is that announced in the ,president's ,message4 ,but the remedy will not apply itself1 and the means for an adequate supply of educational facilities must be furnished promptly or the time will soon come when the case will be hopeless4 ,,what ,,are ,,the ,,sources ,,of ,,this ,,supply8 #a4 ,the public school funds of the ,states themselves4 ,this must be the main source4 ,we recognize the fact that the ,southern ,states are comparatively poor1 and the further fact1 so greatly to their credit1 that some of them are paying as large a per cent4 on the assessed value of their property as do some of the ,northern ,states4 ,but all the same1 the supply of school houses and teachers is utterly inadequate4 #b4 ,from the ,national ,government4 ,the ,government has done something in this direction2 in giving lands to the ,states for educational purposes and in establishing the ,freedmen's ,bureau4 ,it is urged to do more by the passage of an ,educational ,bill4 ,it has been said that there are objections to every possible way of planting a hill of corn4 ,but a good deal of corn has been planted1 and it grows4 ,there are objections to any possible ,educational ,bill that can be framed4 ,some of the funds will be wasted1 some will be expended in favoritism and some will be neglected and not expended at all4 ,but yet a large share of the money will be spent and well spent1 and the great good will over-balance the minor evils4 ,but even the appropriation1 under any ,educational ,bill that has been proposed1 will be but a drop in the bucket4 #c4 ,another source is from ,northern charitable funds4 ,the ,north owes an immeasurable debt to both races in the ,south4 ,it emancipated the slave1 and in so doing1 assumed its share of the responsibility for the consequences4 ,it cannot shrink from the duty under the plea that it is a ,southern question1 or even because some of the people at the ,south protest against its interference4 ,the duty of the ,north is two-fold--educational and religious4 ,it is bound to aid in primary1 industrial1 normal and higher education4 ,it has the teachers and it has the money4 ,it has a special obligation to impart religious instruction4 ,the public school funds of the ,south and the money of the ,national ,government cannot be applied to distinctively religious education4 ,but there is no such restriction on the ,northern schools in the ,south2 they can give religious instruction in all departments1 and they can train up religious teachers and preachers4 ,the ,north1 too1 has an urgent call to found pure and intelligent churches among the masses in the ,south4 ,the ,north has not been idle in these respects4 ,the public in both sections of the country have1 we believe1 a faint conception of the amount of money already expended in the ,south by ,northern charitable individuals and societies4 ,for example1 the ,american ,missionary ,association1 including some institutions which it founded and for a time sustained1 has expended #g1abd1aea4bf2 and including1 also1 books and clothing and the amount collected and spent in connection with its boarding departments1 the total sum1 as near as can be computed1 would be not far from ten millions of dollars since #ahfb2 and this money has been economically and wisely expended4 ,it is due to the ,association and to those who have supplied it with the funds1 that the grandeur of its work should be recognized4 ,but1 if now1 to all this is added the amount expended in the ,south by other religious bodies and by the ,peabody and ,slater and ,hand funds1 it will be seen that a mighty force is at work1 unobtrusive as it is helpful1 arousing no antagonism in the ,south1 and blessing in its rebound the benevolent contributors at the ,north4 ,,the ,,inadequacy ,,of ,,the ,,supply4 ,but1 as the disciples said in regard to the five barley loaves and the two fishes1 ,what are these among so many8 ,the means in both cases are utterly inadequate1 and the need of multiplying is as imperative here as it was on the shore of ,galilee4 ,we have a ,negro population of eight millions1 which has doubled in the last twenty years1 and increases at the rate of six hundred per day--requiring1 if adequately supplied1 the founding of a new ,fisk ,university or ,talladega ,college every twenty-four hours4 ,there are #a1ejj1jjj illiterate voters in the ,south1 and how can the ,north1 while admitting with ,president ,harrison1 that if the public security is threatened by this ignorance the remedy is education1 withhold its share of the necessary means8 ,how can the churches of the ,north1 who know that the future destiny of these ignorant masses depends upon their religious far more than upon their secular education1 refuse the needed gifts for that purpose8 ,here is where the miracle wrought on the shore of ,galilee needs to be repeated4 ,our ,lord and ,master is not here now in bodily presence1 and he entrusts to his church the duty of multiplying the bread of life for these vast perishing masses4 ,the churches of the ,north must awake to this great duty4 ,if done at all1 it must be done promptly4 ,present means are wholly inadequate4 ,every individual ,christian at the ,north should feel his personal responsibility and should respond by a great increase of his contributions for this purpose4 ,it is not too much to say that the religious influences sent from the ,north in school1 in industrial training1 in the preparation of ,christian ministers and teachers1 and in the planting of ,christian churches1 will well-nigh constitute the pivotal point of the whole movement4 ,a loss now can never be regained1 but the achievements of the present should be a stimulus for the future4 ,the ,north withheld neither treasure nor blood to save the ,union and to free the slave4 ,treasure and toil will now save the ,south and the ,nation4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,some ,,curious ,,and ,,suggestive ,,facts4 ,what proportion of the funds contributed by living donors to missionary societies comes directly from church collections8 ,we presume the answer from a large majority of the contributors would be1 three-fourths or four-fifths4 ,but the curious fact is1 that1 for the three years1 #ahhf1 #ahhg and #ahhh1 the average contributions to the ,american ,missionary ,association from church collections are forty-seven per cent41 from ,sunday-schools seven per cent41 from ,woman's ,missionary ,societies five per cent41 from individual donors forty-one per cent4 ,it thus appears that less than one-half the total sum comes from collections in the churches4 ,another curious fact is1 that these receipts directly from the churches are uniform1 not differing to the extent of three per cent4 in the past three years4 ,so that1 with all the importunity and pressure1 the plate collections in the churches have not increased4 ,another curious fact is1 that one-third of the amount donated by individuals is for special objects1 mainly for the increase of plant1 and thus adds to the cost of running expenses1 and is so far forth a burden and not a relief on regular appropriations for current expenses4 ,what1 therefore1 is the stable reliance of missionary societies on which to make annual appropriations8 ,it cannot be on legacies4 ,it cannot be on the special contributions of individuals4 ,it ought to be based on church collections4 ,these should carry current expenses1 and the additional plant should come from outside sources4 ,if this be so1 and the societies are to increase their work at all from year to year2 if1 indeed1 they are to meet the additional cost of the new plant given by individuals1 then the church collections should be increased proportionately4 ,are we not1 therefore1 making a legitimate appeal1 when we urge upon every church member the duty of increasing his individual gift put into the plate when the collection is taken8 ,a vote of the ,national ,council or of the ,annual ,meeting of a missionary body1 or of a ,state ,conference1 that a society should receive an increase of funds amounts to little1 unless the individual donor in the church will increase his gifts4 ,a little increase here aggregates much4 ,if every member will add of study1 four in the army1 and eight years of pastoral labor in ,wisconsin preceded2 but of all these marked periods1 none have been more truly enjoyable and fruitful than these last ten years of preaching the gospel to the poor4 ,it has been my good fortune to visit at various times most of the prominent points in the work of the ,association in the ,south1 both in the colored and in the mountain white departments4 ,and so1 from this decennial standpoint of experience and observation1 ,i want to put on record a few thoughts which have been simmering in my mind4 #a4--,the vast importance and far-reaching influence of the work that has been done4 ,from all these schools and churches1 scattered through this ,southland1 there have come forth1 year by year1 hundreds of young colored men and women1 whose minds have been disciplined and characters deeply impressed for a good life4 ,thousands have gone out to teach and labor among their own people1 with hearts aflame with true missionary zeal4 ,they have labored among innumerable trials and discouragements1 in leaky1 rickety log-cabins1 without desks1 without blackboards1 maps1 charts1 or other educational necessities4 ,they have been eager and zealous workers for ,sunday-schools1 for temperance and righteous living1 even when oftentimes opposed by the old-time preachers and church-officers of their own race1 and sometimes opposed by the whites4 ,so the leaven has spread far and wide4 ,a great work has been accomplished by these schools and churches4 ,these ten years have seen a most decided uplifting of character and power among the colored race4 ,they are steadily acquiring property1 building homes and improving their surroundings4 ,there are now over eighty newspapers published by colored men in the former slave ,states of the ,south4 ,some of these are very creditable specimens in typography and in ability1 and they have great and increasing influence4 ,the great majority of these editors and teachers have been educated in the ,a4,m4,a4 schools4 ,there are also several colored lawyers1 dentists and physicians1 who have almost without exception been educated in our schools4 ,the direct results in our ,congregational church work are not as plainly apparent1 because most of the students when coming under our influence are already connected with other churches1 or else their parents are1 which amounts almost to the same thing4 ,so the ,baptists and ,methodists have reaped rich harvests through the training of their sons and daughters in our schools4 ,but these same denominations have been through this means greatly uplifted and purified1 so that great good has come to all these strong and numerous churches1 besides the steady growth of ,congregationalism as well4 ,rev4 ,dr4 ,curry1 one of the leaders of ,southern thought1 said in a recent address before the ,georgia ,legislature1 ,the ,congregationalists have done more than all other denominations for the education of the ,negro--they have done grandly1 patriotically4 ,to my eyes1 which have been wide open during these ten years1 there are most marked and gratifying signs of progress apparent in every way4 ,far and near the leaven has spread1 the older denominations are improving1 the principles of industrial and ,christian education are accomplishing untold good4 #b4--,there is also manifest in these ten years a marked improvement in the feeling between the races4 ,when a man has lived for ten years in the ,south1 he will begin to see how deeply rooted and immovably imbedded in the ,southern mind is the sentiment of inborn contempt for the ,negro4 ,this was greatly intensified and brought to the surface by the passions and prejudices of the war1 with the volcanic upheavals and chaotic events of the carpet-bag period which followed4 ,considering all these things1 there has been in my opinion a remarkable loosening of the grasp of prejudice1 a gradual melting of the caste principle1 especially in the minds of the better class among the whites4 ,i say this deliberately1 with personal knowledge of the agitation of the infamous ,glenn ,bill in ,georgia1 and notwithstanding the prejudice in ,alabama which broke up the colored normal school formerly existing in ,marion1 and afterward successfully opposed its re-establishment in ,montgomery1 or rather refused the previous ,state aid4 ,having been for many years on the ,board of ,trustees of ,atlanta ,university1 and being personally acquainted with a number of the members of the ,georgia ,legislature1 yet ,i am prepared to state this astonishing paradox--that even the legislators who voted for the ,glenn ,bill have a much higher regard for the colored race and for the ,a4,m4,a4 schools than they formerly had4 ,i cannot take time to explain this singular phenomenon1 but it is true4 ,one of the prominent members of the ,georgia ,legislature said to me on the streets of ,macon1 when he heard the news of ,president ,ware's sudden death at ,atlanta ,university3 ,mr4 ,ware was a hero of the nineteenth century1 and deserves a monument to his memory from the ,state of ,georgia4 ,so1 notwithstanding ,col4 ,glenn and his followers1 the same ,legislature of ,georgia has recently added two million dollars to the school fund of the ,state4 ,the efforts of such brave and fearless leaders as ,rev4 ,dr4 ,haygood1 ,rev4 ,dr4 ,curry1 ,hon4 ,walter ,b4 ,hill and others have not been in vain1 and the good results of the ,a4,m4,a4 work have commanded respect and even wonder from its bitterest opponents1 whose number and zeal decreases4 ,wisdom and discretion in future will rapidly increase its friends4 #c4--;,i could say much more concerning the colored work1 in which 7at ,macon1 ,georgia7 ,i spent eight and a half of the happiest years of my life4 ,that branch of work needs to be sustained and extended for years to come4 ,having now been for eighteen months in the mountain white department of work1 and having visited nearly all its most important posts1 ,i am prepared to say that this1 also1 is a most needy part of the great missionary work which this ,society has undertaken4 ,here are nearly two millions of people1 scattered here and there over this great ,cumberland ,plateau1 who because of their inaccessibility1 their poverty and indifference1 have been largely passed by until recently4 ,the great tides of missionary effort have swirled and risen to the east1 the south and the west1 but have reached only a little way up into the caves and valleys of this great island plateau1 which towers a thousand feet above the surrounding country4 ,the inevitable effects of isolation1 of intermarriage1 of stagnation and neglect in mental and spiritual matters1 has brought about a condition of things which calls for the aid and sympathy of all good ,samaritans4 ,they have not suffered in the same way as the colored race1 from the former oppression and contagious vices of a superior race2 but left alone in their mountain fastnesses1 left behind in the march of human progress1 they have been a nation of ,robinson ,crusoes1 deteriorating and retrograding from the inevitable nature of mankind when left to itself4 ,having no momentum from outside1 feeling nothing of the swing and swell of progress1 hearing little and knowing little of the outer world1 they need now our help to uplift and enthuse and save them4 ,schools1 churches1 industrial instruction1 mental and spiritual training1 help for the poor and the ignorant and the degraded is sorely needed4 ,this is comparatively a new field of work1 and is still largely unexplored and obscure4 ,there is much to be done1 and it should be done now4 ,the results of a very few years of work are encouraging4 ,pray1 friends1 pray6 ,give1 friends1 ,nashville have extended the course of study in the public schools for the colored population1 so that there is in existence now a fully-fledged ,high ,school for the colored youth1 having precisely the same course of study as that of the white youth2 and the members of the school are subjected to the same written and oral tests as those of the white school4 ,so far as ,i know1 this is the first instance of the kind in the ,south4 ,most boards graduate the colored children from the eighth1 or at most1 the ninth year of school4 ,the colored ,high ,school of ,nashville had public exercises in the ,grand ,opera ,house in ,june1 when a class of seven graduated4 ,the ,superintendent of ,public ,schools1 the ,board of ,education1 and prominent citizens1 white and colored1 occupied the platform and gave their approval of the innovation by their presence4 ,the first class of the white ,high ,school was graduated twenty-eight years ago and numbered seven4 ,this class of colored graduates also numbered seven4 ,a member of that first white class is now the ,president of the ,board of ,education1 and presented the diplomas to the members of this colored class4 ,altogether1 the occasion was auspicious for better things in the public school system in ,tennessee4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,thomasville1 ,,ga4 ,one incident that has brightened our year is the arrival of a pretty school organ1 the generous gift of ,mr4 ,s4,d4 ,smith1 ,president of the ,smith ,organ and ,piano ,company1 ,boston1 ,mass4 ,it chanced that at the same time1 ,mr4 ,hall1 our ,superintendent1 came to visit us1 and one morning early we found him at work with his own hands removing it from its box4 ,on its being taken into the school-room where all the pupils were assembled for the morning exercises1 ,mr4 ,hall in a felicitous manner presented it to the school in ,mr4 ,smith's name1 taking from the children in return a hearty ,thank you for the donor1 and a promise to make use of the organ in the cause of temperance and for the ,lord ,jesus ,christ4 ,then the first notes pealed forth from the sweet-toned organ1 notes of praise1 accompanying the children's voices in the ,gloria ,patri4 ,then holy hymns and temperance songs filled the air with melody4 ,the jubilee ended with grand old ,america1 and as we came to the closing lines1 how truly our hearts echoed the prayer3 ,long may our land be bright ,,riggs4 ,for a long time ,i have wished to see something of the people and of the work at ,white ,river4 ,the station there1 ,park ,street ,church ,station1 so-called because the church of that name in ,boston contributed the money for its establishment1 was almost the only one under ,mr4 ,riggs's care that ,i had not visited4 ,although the supervision of it1 and of the whole ,rosebud ,agency field1 has recently been assumed by ,mr4 ,cross1 ,mr4 ,riggs continues to confer with him in regard to the management of it1 and for this purpose made a journey thither a few weeks ago4 ,a happy combination of circumstances at home made it possible for me to accompany him4 ,after three days of travel in pony-cart1 we came in sight of the ,white ,river1 and before descending into the valley and crossing the river caught a glimpse of the station building and the villages on the hills near it4 ,climbing the hill at the rear of the station1 we drove into the yard1 completely surprising ,mr4 ,cross1 who1 nevertheless gave us a most hearty welcome4 ,as soon as the news of our arrival had spread1 we began to have visitors1 but1 knowing that ,i should not see many of the people1 especially the older women1 unless ,i went to their homes1 ,i arranged with ,mr4 ,cross to take me to the different villages4 ,we spent two days in going about4 ,i should think there are between forty and fifty houses in the three villages near there4 ,in each of two houses1 we found three wives and ten children1 and the others were well populated4 ,all were in ignorance1 and filth1 and degradation1 pitiable to see4 ,some babies nearly a year old had never been thoroughly washed since their birth4 ,some of the older people had never been to the school-house4 ,a few rather pride themselves upon keeping aloof from the native teacher and the various exercises he conducts4 ,we were pleasantly received at all the places4 ,some of the people had heard of ,the ,sacred ,herald's wife1 though they had never seen me4 ,wishing to have all the women come to the school-house1 that ,i might see more of them and have them meet ,virginia ,de ,coteau1 the teacher's wife1 we invited them to a feast4 ,this is something the ,dakotas are very fond of1 though usually it is connected with some of their dances or other heathen customs4 ,some of the old women wished to know if ,i was going to preach to them1 evidently wanting to fight shy of anything of this sort1 but ,i told them no1 it was to be a real feast1 not a prayer meeting4 ,mr4 ,cross entered heartily into the preparations for the festivity4 ,we made about five gallons of coffee and the same quantity of stew1 consisting of meat1 onions1 turnips1 beans1 rice and crackers1 with the gravy well thickened--a very savory mess it was1 too4 ,we had crackers to pass around4 ,not a very elaborate menu1 but one which appealed strongly to the ,dakota taste4 ,by noon the women began to gather1 and soon the school-room was well filled1 a good many sitting on the floor4 ,there were about fifty present1 not counting little babies4 ,there were only two painted faces1 though in our visiting there was scarcely a house in which there were not two or more of the women painted2 the most of them had washed their faces and put on clean dresses4 ,i had told them all to bring their own dishes1 and the variety was amusing4 ,there was everything in size from an ordinary cup to a milk-pan and one much battered long-handled dipper4 ,coffee and crackers were passed first1 then the stew4 ,oh1 it smells of onions6 was the exclamation as ,i dished it out4 ,all seemed very happy1 and laughed and joked as they ate4 ,i told them ,i had been ten years among the ,dakotas and had never before made a feast2 that ,i had planned for a long time to visit them and had not been able1 and perhaps it would be a long time before ,i should see them again1 so ,i thought ,i would make them happy in this way4 ,the old women replied1 ,we have often heard of you1 and now we see you2 we will always remember you and speak of you as 'the woman who made the feast4' ,after they had finished1 ,i talked to them a little of the meat which perisheth not1 and of the ,bread and the ,water of ,life1 closing with prayer4 ,it was a very enjoyable experience4 ,i also met the women one afternoon at a special prayer meeting4 ,it was not very well attended on account of the storm1 which was almost a blizzard on that day4 ,there are only two ,christian women in that community besides ,louis' wife4 ,we spent two ,sundays with the intervening days at this station1 gaining a new insight into the needs of the out-station work1 and new inspiration for carrying it on4 99 99 99 99 99 ,one thing that interested me very much was seeing a little girl who was a member of our ,oahe ,school two years ago4 ,she is the daughter of a prominent man in the village near ,park ,street ,church ,station4 ,she was in native dress when she came to us2 when ,i saw her over there1 although her mother was away at the ,agency and she was staying with relatives1 she looked very neat and clean4 ,she wore a pretty dress made after the style worn in our school and in every respect looked as well as though she had just come out of school4 ,i think she would have returned with us had her parents been at home4 99 99 99 99 99 ,there were two young women also1 whom ,i should be glad to have in the school here4 ,they have just united with the church and been baptized4 ,they seem quite superior in many ways to their surroundings4 ,they can both read in ,dakota and so have the ,bible to learn from4 ,of course they have in a manner isolated themselves from their youthful companions in having given up their heathen customs2 it seems as though souls so young and untried in the ,christian life must meet with many temptations and many trying experiences4 ,i should be glad to have them here in a ,christian community1 where they could learn more of our ,christian work4 ,i am sure they would gain help and strength from the prayer meetings and missionary work1 as well as from the sympathy of all who engage in such work4 ,then1 doubtless1 they would be benefited by the industrial training and the academic work1 though ,i doubt if they would do much with the ,english language1 as they are both over twenty years old and would probably not remain in school more than a year4 99 99 99 99 99 ,my journey has been a help to me4 ,living away from the people and losing sight of the ignorance and filth and heathenism1 we forget what our chief aim should be1 not simply school-work for the children1 but ,christianization and civilization for the masses4 ,this1 in its greatest effectiveness1 can be done at the out-stations and in the vernacular only4 ,it is necessary to have the gospel preached constantly in order to have it penetrate these darkened hearts1 preached in a tongue which can be understood1 and necessary to have a ,christian life lived in its commandments received a new meaning to us as we heard them recited by one who until recently bowed himself down to graven images of ,god and the devil in the ,joss house4 ,they sang ,christian hymns in ,chinese and ,english4 ,charley ,nun gave an address in which he testified to the benefits in being a ,jesus boy4 ,hom ,gee had written and read the story of his conversion to ,jesus4 ,it was interesting to listen as they told how they were led out of darkness into light1 and asked for the prayers of all good ,christians4 ,the audience felt that human hearts are the same the world over1 and that the ,holy ,ghost had been given unto them1 even as unto us4 ,the address of ,low ,quong would convince the most skeptical of the power of the gospel to purify the heart1 illumine the mind and elevate the life and character of the ,chinamen as well as others4 ,he spoke in good ,english1 and by his clear putting of the gospel truth1 touched the hearts of all4 ,the service made many converts4 ,it convinced the hearers that the ,chinaman was made in the image of ,god and is included in the every creature1 to whom the gospel is to be preached4 ,there are about one thousand ,christian ,chinamen connected with the ,congregational ,churches of ,california and ,oregon4 ,they contribute about #b1ejj for home mission work and have organized a foreign missionary society1 and with #a1djj as a starter1 have sent two missionaries1 one a ,chinaman1 back to ,china to do work there4 ,there is considerable opposition to ,chinamen in this ,state4 ,it does not wholly arise from sand lot orators either4 ,these little brown men are industrious1 patient1 cheerful1 obliging4 ,they make the best of servants4 ,but the average working man of ,america cannot compete with him in the labor market1 and ,i would be sorry if he could4 ,i hope the day will never come when the working man of ,america will be reduced to such cramped conditions of home life as ,the heathen ,chinee luxuriates in4 ,paganism can live where ,christianity cannot4 ,a hut will do for a pagan ,zulu4 ,when he becomes a ,christian1 he wants a shirt and a house4 ,chinatown in any ,california city1 and especially in a series of meetings4 ,there were early indications of popular interest1 the crowd was easily gathered and the good work began much sooner than the most sanguine anticipated4 ,the first week passed4 ,sinners had risen for prayers1 strong men bowed their heads1 confessing their sins1 and conversions were daily reported4 ,then came a momentary lull1 such as is often observed in revival seasons4 ,mr4 ,pope's experienced eye was quick to divine the cause4 ,he knew that crowd of eager listeners--that there were many among them1 old and young1 who stood on the verge of the ,kingdom with the fatal cup in their hands4 ,said he to me1 ,the time has come for a temperance talk--that is what they need6 and designated that very evening for me to present the subject4 ,at this ,i confess ,i was not a little embarrassed1 for although accustomed to short1 informal temperance talks in public1 ,i had no idea1 woman that ,i was1 of taking his place at such a critical moment4 ,what added to my embarrassment was the disheartening fact to all of us that ,mr4 ,pope was just then unexpectedly called away to another part of his extensive field and was gone two days4 ,so there was no help for it4 ,i looked over my old notes--nothing would do4 ,then ,i inquired of the ,lord1 and ,he said ,fear not4 ,here let me remark1 that ,i have hitherto encountered in this needy part of the country an obstinate prejudice against this ,woman's ,temperance ,work by the women themselves1 the most interested party in it4 ,but here1 thanks be to ,god1 ,i met a most favorable reception4 ,how the people looked1 how earnestly they listened also1 yes1 and wept1 as ,i told them of the world-wide ,woman's ,christian ,temperance ,union1 and warned them of that fatal sin which was keeping many women out of the ,kingdom of ,heaven1 and they knew it4 ,i talked in my simple way of human love in its various phases1 and then turned to the incomparable love of ,christ1 who would save them if they would only let him4 ,in conclusion ,i asked--,is there any one here1 man1 woman or child1 in this congregation1 who is willing to forswear the intoxicating cup henceforth and forever8 ,if there is1 let him come forward and take me by the hand4 ,with scarcely a pause1 the main body of the audience in the rear 7you know what that means7 rose from their seats and literally precipitated themselves upon the speaker's stand4 ,for the next half hour ,i had nothing to do but to shake hands and pin the white ribbon4 ,i never witnessed a more exciting scene4 ,the tearful joy of suffering wives over their sobered husbands1 and anxious parents over their wandering boys will not be forgotten4 ,the happy result of this first meeting of the kind created a demand for its repetition on two other occasions1 as the revival went on with equal enthusiasm and success4 ,in the course of our visitation from house to house1 a ,northern lady who had come down here to winter with her brother on account of her health1 informed me of the disgusting revels of a certain man and his wife with their half-dozen drunken boarders1 which she was compelled to witness in the other end of the house weekly1 or as often as pay-day came around4 ,i can't bear it1 said she4 ,are you then praying1 said ,i2 ,where is your faith8 ,a few day's later1 at the mother's meeting1 another woman said1 with much feeling1 ,won't you present the temperance cause again tonight8 ,my husband and several others wish to join your organization4 ,i did4 ,and who were the first to present themselves as candidates for the white ribbon but that same woman and her husband8 ,twenty-three others in the congregation followed suit1 and all again stood forth hand in hand--token of unbroken friendship--a spectacle to angels and mortal man4 ,by this time1 to our great joy1 ,brother ,pope had returned1 and he assigned me to my proper place after one of his own rousing appeals4 ,to give you a general idea of the power of this work1 which continued with unflagging interest to the last1 allow me to cite two or three instances of conversion4 ,one1 a man who had shot and killed three notorious burglars1 was tried for legal informality and acquitted on the ground of the public weal4 ,this was two years ago1 and the people who knew and understood him well1 said that he had enjoyed no peace of mind since4 ,notwithstanding all1 he was1 and is1 a man of power and commanding influence1 and has entered heartily into the work and interests of the ,a4,m4,a41 as ,brother ,pope can assure you4 ,another1 a younger man1 likewise implicated in a murder last ,fourth of ,july1 and committed to jail for a time1 the particulars of whose case ,i am unacquainted with1 cried out in open congregation1 ,pray for me1 ,i am the vilest sinner that ever lived1 and dropped upon his knees in sore agony of body and soul to join in prayer with the ,christians present4 ,as the latter arose and began singing1 ,come1 humble sinner1 he stepped right forward exclaiming1 ,by the grace of ,god ,i will1 ,i will1 and at that moment the great change might be read in the heavenly expression of his changed countenance4 ,yet another young man1 a boon companion in sin1 cried out in the same way and came forward kneeling for some time1 and then rising said1 ,i have found ,god2 he is good2 come1 my friends1 and find him1 ,o come1 repeating these words as he passed through the wondering congregation till he came to me1 when grasping my hand1 he exclaimed1 ,praise the ,lord that ever he sent you to this place4 ,he was asked to pray4 ,yes1 yes1 was his instant reply1 that is just what ,i want to do2 and such a prayer as he offered up is seldom heard4 ,a well-known skeptic arose and openly renounced his infidelity4 ,as my husband and ,brother ,pope had both their special appointments elsewhere to fill1 it fell to my lot1 much against my predilections1 to close the whole series of meetings by my third and last temperance lecture4 ,this appeal on the temperance question was also responded to1 at first mostly by young boys and girls1 followed by a venerable gentleman and his two sons1 and then the full complement of men and women4 ,so all temperance1 in connection with which the ,indian policeman1 recently appointed1 made some earnest remarks on the same subject4 ,it was his first effort in church1 and he surprised his friends by his success4 ,an ,indian chief spoke about ,christmas1 and your missionary added remarks on the meaning of the word ,christmas--the feast of ,christ4 ,a report of the ,sabbath-school showed that there had been an average attendance of forty-five4 ,prizes having been offered to all those who should be on the roll of honor four-fifths of the time1 by learning the ,sabbath ,school lesson--three verses in advance and three in review-- perfectly1 it was found that five had gained a prize1 a good book each1 two of them being ,indian children1 and the others white children4 ,the gifts from the tree were then distributed4 ,none of the children were omitted2 some went home so loaded that they could hardly carry all1 and even many of the oldest1 decrepit ,indians who could not be present1 were not
