first colored regiment raised west of the ,alleghenies1 just before the massacre of colored troops at ,fort ,pillow1 and knowing so much of the fidelity and valor and good service of those troops in the war to the ,nation1 to which they then owed so little1 ,i have special interest in the enlightenment and uplifting of the colored race in the ,south4 99 99 99 99 99 ,in the last month's ,missionary1 we published some statements showing that persons declined to contribute to our treasury because we had been so enriched by the ,daniel ,hand ,fund4 ,it gives us pleasure to know that all our patrons do not take this view of the matter1 as will be seen from the following extract from the letter of a practical business man3 ,if ,a4,m4,a4 means ,a ,million ,accepted1 ,i hope you will be able to write it once a year till you can build churches1 school-houses and colleges all through the ,south1 but not enough to take away from the churches of the ,north and ,east the privilege of ,amendment of the ,constitution1 has the question of the equal suffrage of the races in the ,south awakened public attention as it does now4 ,in many quarters1 some of them very influential1 the right of the ,negro to a fair vote and a fair count is strenuously advocated4 ,on the other hand1 the supremacy of the whites as the ruling race in the ,south is set forth by leading ,southern men more distinctly than ever before4 ,,white ,,supremacy4 ,col4 ,grady1 of ,atlanta1 in his famous speech at ,dallas1 ,texas1 urges this in these emphatic terms3 ,standing in the presence of this multitude1 sobered with the responsibility of the message ,i deliver to the young men of the ,south1 ,i declare that the truth above all others to be worn unsullied and sacred in your hearts1 to be surrendered to no force1 sold for no price1 compromised in no necessity1 but cherished and defended as the covenant of your prosperity1 and the pledge of peace to your children1 is that the white race must dominate forever in the ,south1 because it is the white race1 and superior to that race with which its supremacy is threatened4 ,hon4 ,w4,c4,p4 ,breckinridge1 member of ,congress from ,kentucky1 and many other prominent men in the ,south1 express the same sentiment1 so that this may be regarded as the ultimatum of ,southern popular requirement4 ,,how ,,this ,,supremacy ,,is ,,to ,,be ,,attained4 ,the most obvious way is that which is in use at present1 the intimidation of the colored man and the manipulation of the ballot-box4 ,but against this the sober second thought of the ,south itself begins to revolt4 ,thus a paper so thoroughly ,southern as the ,charleston ,news and ,courier utters this salutary and emphatic protest3 ,it appals thinking men to know and see that the present generation and the rising generation of white men in the ,south are taught in practice that republican institutions are a failure1 and that elections are to be carried1 not by the honest vote of a fair majority1 but by campaigning1 which begins with rank intimidation and ends with subterfuge and evasion4 ,the white people suffer more by the trickery and malfeasance by which they score victory than the colored people suffer4 ,the supremacy of what1 for convenience1 is called ,anglo-,saxon civilization1 though there is little of the ,anglo-,saxon manner or of civilization in the mode of securing it1 must and will be maintained1 but it can be maintained without sectional divisions in politics and without the maintenance of radical lines at elections4 ,as these old methods are beginning to find little favor with the ,south itself1 a multitude of other schemes are brought to the front4 ,the ,age-,herald1 of ,birmingham1 ,ala41 claims a patent 7which it says others are infringing7 for the scheme which it thus sets forth3 ,the ,negroes could be induced to emigrate to a ,western ,territory1 if it were set apart for their especial use without any force being used to compel them to go4 ,a writer in the ,richmond ,dispatch proposes that the ,negroes in the ,south be induced to voluntarily emigrate to ,brazil1 ,mexico or other countries where they are wanted1 and even the old plan of fifty years ago1 to return them to ,africa is again brought forward4 ,to this last suggestion1 the ,yonkers ,statesman replies3 ,the notion that the black can be successfully re-shipped to ,africa dies hard2 but there are few things plainer than that he has no desire and no purpose to be thus disposed of1 but regards this land as being as much his as it is the white man's4 ,it would be hard to dispute his title1 grounded as it is in age and effective service4 ,the ,negro believes he belongs here1 and here he means to remain2 and the prospect that his mind can be changed is certainly not very cheering4 ,the ,times-,democrat of ,new ,orleans thinks that the true solution is white immigration1 but the ,daily ,express of ,san ,antonio1 ,texas1 replies3 ,the principal objection to this scheme is that the ,negro will not go till the white immigrants come1 and the white immigrants will not come until the ,negro goes4 ,congressman ,oates1 of ,alabama1 advocates the disfranchisement of the ,negroes1 or rather as a ,democrat he suggests that the ,republicans do it4 ,he says that as the ,republicans gave him the ballot1 the ,south would cheerfully acquiesce if they should take it away from him4 ,but it is not likely that the ,republican administration will lead off in such a movement4 ,indeed1 from present appearances1 the new ,president is looking in exactly the opposite direction4 ,,wiser ,,views4 ,there are men1 however1 in the ,south1 wise1 conscientious and to the manner born1 who take entirely different views of this great problem4 ,the ,hon4 ,j4,l4,m4 ,curry1 once a ,general in the ,confederate ,army1 subsequently the efficient ,secretary of the ,peabody ,fund1 more recently our ,minister in ,spain1 and now again at his post as ,secretary of the ,peabody ,fund1 utters himself in this forcible language3 ,i want to say to you1 in perfect frankness1 that the man who thinks the ,negro problem has been settled is either a fanatic or a fool4 ,i stand aghast at the problem4 ,i don't believe civilization ever encountered one of greater magnitude4 ,it casts a dark shadow over your churches1 your government of the future4 ,it is a great problem which will tax your energies4 ,your ancestors and mine a few years ago were cannibals and pagans4 ,they have become what they are1 not by virtue of white skin1 but by improving government and good laws4 ,you let the ,negro children get an education where yours do not1 let the ,negro be superior to you in culture and property1 and you will have a black man's government4 ,improvement1 cultivation1 education is the secret1 the condition and guarantee of race supremacy4 ,i will astonish you1 perhaps1 by saying that if the ,negro develops and becomes in culture1 property and civilization1 superior to the white man1 the ,negro ought to rule4 ,you see to it that he does not become so4 ,the responsibility rests with you4 ,rev4 ,a4,g4 ,haygood1 ,d4,d41 ,secretary of the ,slater ,fund1 closes a review of ,senator ,eustis's recent paper in these earnest words3 ,whatever political theory men form or oppose2 whatever their speculative opinions about the origin of races2 whatever their notions concerning color or caste2 whatever their relations heretofore to slavery and what went along with it1 this is absolutely certain3 no question involving the rights and wrongs of men1 civilized or savage1 white or black1 was ever yet settled so that it would stay settled by any system of mere repression4 ,and to those who believe in ,jesus ,christ it is equally certain that nothing can be rightly settled that is not settled in harmony with the teachings of the ,sermon on the ,mount4 ,if there be a ,divine ,providence no good man need be afraid to do right to-day2 nay1 he will fear only doing wrong4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,training ,,of ,,colored ,,students ,,for ,,the ,,episcopal ,,ministry4 ,a very interesting discussion occurred in the ,missionary ,council of the ,episcopal ,church1 held in ,washington1 ,d4,c41 ,november #acth and #adth1 in regard to the education of colored students for the ministry in the ,episcopal ,church4 ,the motive for not educating them in the existing ,episcopal ,seminaries appeared to be simply the caste-prejudice1 and some marked utterances and facts were given on that subject1 which we wish to preserve4 ,the ,bishop of ,kentucky1 whose generous feelings toward the colored race we have had occasion to notice heretofore1 quoted from another1 and endorsed for himself1 the declaration3 ,the white man is not fit to study for the ministry who is not ready to have his black brother sit by him in the class room1 and he subsequently added3 ,i believe ,i can speak for my brothers1 and ,i say out of my heart ,i would just as soon sit by the side of a black man if he were in the ,house of ,bishops1 as one of my white brothers4 ,but yet the ,bishop suggested and endorsed the plan for the separate education of colored students1 for two reasons3 7#a7 ,the power of heredity is not to be overthrown in a day nor an hour444 ,this subtle spirit of caste is perhaps the demon hardest to cast out of the human spirit1 the one that requires the most prayer and fasting1 without which it will not go out1 and 7#b7 ,it is certainly true that the colored men themselves do not want to go there4 ,it is just as true that the white men do not want to have them there4 ,as to the first point1 it is to be regretted that the good ,bishop did not give himself to fasting and prayer to cast out this malignant demon1 rather than to yield to it1 and that he did not heed the words which ,jesus uttered when his disciples could not cast out a demon1 ,bring him hither to me4 ,if bishops and churches will only bring this demon of caste to ,jesus1 the work will be done4 ,the ,bishop's second point1 that the colored people desired the separation1 was pointedly answered by ,dr4 ,crummell 7rector of ,st4 ,luke's ,colored ,church1 ,washington17 who was invited to speak on the subject4 ,dr4 ,crummell said3 ,i do not think that any man in this country has seen any statement by any number of black men or black students that they wanted to be by themselves4 ,i do not think such an utterance can be found among the race4 ,i myself never heard such a thing1 and wherever they have had entrance to other schools they have gone to them4 ,the decision reached by the ,council was to erect1 in connection with some of the colored universities in the ,south1 a hall under ,episcopal control for colored ,episcopal students for the ministry1 who should also attend the college classes in the ,university4 ,so far as the principle is concerned1 we regret this decision4 ,how much better if the wealthy and intelligent ,episcopal ,church in this country had lent its vast influence in repudiating the spirit of caste by introducing colored theological students into its own excellent seminaries4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,monthly ,,concert ,,and ,,supplement4 ,,by ,,rev4 ,,edwin ,n4 ,,andrews4 ,do they say the monthly concert is dull8 ,if so1 it is likely owing to one or two causes like the following1 7#a7 ,perhaps only two or three families take any missionary ,magazine1 hence but little information can be expected4 ,people are not interested in what they know nothing of4 ,or1 7#b7 there is a lack of preparation and purpose to make the meeting interesting on the part of those to whom the leader ought to look for help4 ,however1 our last meeting took a rather interesting turn4 ,it had been of the average sort only1 when towards the close one of the ladies spoke of a call among the ,freedmen for dolls and clothing1 7not clothing for dolls74 ,the pastor suggested that we gather together1 from the families1 various contributions1 such as partly-worn garments1 toys1 books1 religious papers1 etc41 and make a ,new ,year's donation to the people to whom such things would be a god-send and good as new4 ,the suggestion was favored1 and the animated countenances and talk that followed betokened an after-meeting of unusual interest1 and certainly the most practical if not the best part of our conference4 ,something to do1 then and there1 had been suggested2 tongues were somehow set loose2 each one seemed to have a new-born interest1 each held common stock in the enterprise4 ,dr4 ,roy was consulted by the pastor as to a proper and responsible party4 ,meanwhile the goods began to come in1 often sent by the boys or girls1 who thus began to do missionary service1 ,the pastor's wife and daughter did the packing4 ,picture cards were pasted in cloth folios for the little ones2 old hats were trimmed2 coats and vests went in1 shawls1 ,bibles1 toys1 etc41 till a barrel1 a large sugar barrel1 take notice1 was crammed4 ,after awhile there came the address of a colored graduate of ,tougaloo ,university1 living at or near ,chattanooga1 whose name was marked on one end of the barrel1 and the freight sent forward4 ,after some delay1 the letter of acknowledgment came1 saying1 ,the barrel came safe4 ,the things are just what so many of the people need1 and they will go to those most in need4 ,accept our thanks4 ,this letter will be read at our next concert1 which should be a thanksgiving occasion for the opportunity of doing something for the destitute1 and for the discovery of a way to ,highlanders2 where they are1 who they are1 and what the ,a4,m4,a4 is doing for them4 ,this interest on their part is characteristic of the intelligent people throughout ,new ,england4 ,the churches are asking for information concerning these most interesting mountaineers1 and are prayerfully considering their duty toward them4 ,in view of this general interest1 ,i give in these notes this month the following review of a book which ,i have been requested by several ,new ,england pastors to present in ,,the ,,american ,,missionary4 ,the ,loyal ,mountaineers of ,tennessee4 ,by ,thomas ,william ,humes1 ,s4,t4,d4 ,ogden ,brothers ,co43 ,knoxville1 ,tenn4 ,another interesting book on the ,mountain people of the ,south4 ,those who are familiar with the mountain missions of the ,a4,m4,a4 will hail this new volume with special delight4 ,those who read it will understand better the magnitude and importance of this great field into which the ,a4,m4,a4 has pushed out its vanguard1 and the necessity of following up these advances with a solid phalanx of intelligent and enthusiastic missionaries4 ,this historical sketch brings prominently before us the heroic manhood of these ,american ,highlanders during the years of bitter and systematic persecution by the rebel government4 ,there is stuff in these ,highland chieftains and their clans6 ,three facts that stand out from the pages of this history must intensify our interest in these ,american ,highlanders4 ,one1 the systematic and brutal outrages inflicted upon them by the rebel authorities and their heroic endurance2 second1 their unimpeachable and unswerving loyalty to the country2 third1 the tremendous debt the loyal ,christian people of the ,north owe them4 ,take the following order issued by ,j4,p4 ,benjamin1 ,secretary of ,war1 ,november #be1 #ahfa1 which appears on the #adjth page of this book2 ,first4 ,all such as can be identified in having been engaged in bridge-burning are to be tried summarily by drum-head court martial1 and1 if found guilty1 executed on the spot by hanging4 ,it would be well to leave their bodies hanging in the vicinity of the burned bridges4 ,the ,state had voted in ,february1 by sixty thousand majority1 to remain loyal to the ,union4 ,these ,highlanders had sought to save their section of the ,state from rebellion1 and to defend their cabin homes from outrage and butchery4 ,in doing so1 they had burned bridges1 and for this the government at ,richmond deliberately instructs its army officers to hold a mock trial1 to hang1 and to brutally expose the bodies of those who had been executed1 so that surviving friends would have to look upon these sickening horrors6 ,it seems almost impossible that any man could deliberately perpetrate such monstrous cruelties4 ,but the order was issued by the rebel government and carried into effect4 ,indeed1 the brutalities went even farther than this4 ,in ,december1 #ahfa1 two men by the name of ,harmon1 father tragically1 ,fare thee well1 baby6 ,fare thee well6 ,a half-grown girl came up the steps with two tiny chickens about as large as pigeons1 their legs tied together1 their voices lifted up in shrill chair1 in which the child was tied and put before the open fireplace1 while the mother went to a neighbor's for milk1 lay in a pool of water1 and beside it1 the burnt whisk-broom that an older baby had put in the fire1 then dropped blazing under the baby's long clothes1 these told the whole sad story4 ,they were all at the grandparent's house next door--a crowd of screaming people4 ,upon the bed lay what was left of the poor child1 moaning in conscious agony4 ,a drop of water containing the precious anodyne which alone could ease it then1 soon brought blessed unconsciousness until death kindly bore the little soul to ,god4 ,but oh6 the heart-rending grief of that poor mother6 ,god grant we may never witness such suffering again4 ,we tried to comfort her with our tearful sympathy and pleasant for the teachers1 but a necessity4 ,the teacher of these classes is the ,principal's daughter1 who has been taken from her own school to aid in this emergency4 ,in the other school-room1 fitted for fifty-eight1 there are eighty-six--not quite as many as in the other room1 but what is wanting in numbers is made up in size4 ,there are several men six feet tall1 and one minister six and about here uses whiskey and tobacco1 as far as ,i can learn1 and of course the members of the churches can see no harm in doing what their minister does4 ,this is a sad picture1 but it only shows the need of intelligent and consecrated leaders1 such as the ,american ,missionary ,association is raising up for a people who have been led by those who are neither intelligent nor consecrated4 99 99 99 the missionary work4 ,there are now many native preachers and evangelists4 ,this society proposes to buy property in ,china1 for a headquarters must be established in some of the middle cities in the south of ,china1 and then to sustain some of those native preachers and evangelists4 ,now ,i must come back to our work in ,california among the ,christian ,chinese4 ,there are about one thousand ,christian ,chinese in ,california4 ,you may hear in our towns and cities ,chinese preachers and ,chinese evangelists preaching the gospel to their countrymen4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association has put three more ,chinese missions in ,southern ,california during the year #ahhh1 one of them in ,tuscon1 one in ,san ,buenaventura and one in ,los ,angeles4 ,each of these is doing good work4 ,as to our mission at ,los ,angeles1 which was only opened ,april #a1 #ahhh1 it has twenty-five ,christian members1 and it has nearly one hundred pupils who attend the evening schools and preaching service at the mission house from night to night4 ,there are union meetings of all the denominations of ,christian ,chinese at ,los ,angeles1 and at ,san ,francisco and ,santa ,barbara4 ,these meetings occur once a month2 ,chinese preachers and speakers are appointed to address the meetings1 a week beforehand4 ,we have found these meetings a great help to us4 ,street meetings were often it if she waited1 as there would be so many people to get the things1 and she needed a lamp very much4 ,doesn't that sound like an ,indian8 ,i was very sorry the poor woman did not get the lamp4 ,yesterday morning1 while ,miss ,collins pinned the names on to the presents1 ,i went up to the school-house1 and by the help of two native teachers planted the tree in a cracker-box and put the little colored candles on4 ,in the afternoon1 we took the presents up and hung them on the tree2 we put up a curtain to hide the tree1 and then in the evening put out several ,japanese lanterns on the
