has just had a gift of more than a million of dollars4 ,when he explained that only the interest can be used1 and this for educational work only1 the reply was3 ,this interest can be used in payment of appropriations already made for schools1 thus releasing just so much for other purposes4 ,now this is exactly what cannot be done4 ,the ,daniel ,hand ,fund is for new work1 and only in the industrial1 primary and normal schools4 ,it is a priceless boon in this department1 for we can now make enlargements here which were greatly needed1 but for which we had not the means2 but no part of this ,fund can be applied to meet appropriations for other portions of the work4 ,if our constituents will not enable us to meet those other demands1 we can only report a debt2 the ,daniel ,hand ,fund ,church of ,rome never surrenders an undertaking2 it may delay and wait for more auspicious times1 but in the end it perseveres4 ,there are some indications of the renewal of the zeal of the ,papacy disregard of the color-line4 ,the rich and the poor1 the white and the black1 bow at the same altar1 and one of the highest dignitaries of the church is not ashamed to stand side by side with the black man on a great public occasion4 ,protestants at the ,north and the ,south must not allow the ,romanists to surpass them in this ,christ-like position4 99 99 99 99 99 ,we ask our friends to read ,south to ,new ,england6 ,take a map and look it over4 ,put down in each ,state the illiteracy1 and make the comparison4 ,in this good ,commonwealth of ,massachusetts only seven-tenths of one per cent4 of the native born white population are illiterate1 while in ,georgia twenty-three per cent4 of the native whites1 and in ,north ,carolina thirty-two per cent4 of the native whites1 are illiterate4 ,the ,south is pre-eminently the great missionary ground for our ,congregational ,churches2 for ,congregationalism means the school-house as truly as the church--and here in ,new ,england church because he is a ,christian4 ,the feeling is intense here and growing more so4 ,congregationalism could have planted its churches all over the ,south before the war1 but it would not strike hands with slavery2 so1 to-day the children of the ,pilgrims demand that the ,a4,m4,a41 in its growing work1 shall stand true to the historic principles of the fathers1 and not compromise ,christian truth for any seeming temporary advantage4 99 99 99 99 99 ,there is great interest in the work among the ,american ,highlanders which the ,a4,m4,a4 is pushing with such vigor4 ,i spoke in a church near ,boston recently1 and1 after the service1 a young man1 his eyes bright1 his face flushed1 hurried down the aisle and exclaimed1 ,i am a ,kentuckian6 ,i had been telling some plain and rather painful truths concerning the people of ,kentucky--the murders committed there2 their lack of school privileges1 etc4 ,i thought this friend might question some of my statements1 but ,i was delighted when he said3 ,i thank ,god that some one is ready to call attention to the terrible needs of my own ,state4 ,i can't get people to believe me when ,i tell them of those needs4 ,i was brought up on the edge of the mountains and know them well1 and ,i do not believe there is any spot on earth more needy than that region of my own ,state4 ,he accentuated his words by a generous gift to the with a severe cold1 but it was soon discovered that congestion of the brain had set in1 and the end rapidly came4 ,prof4 ,hatch was born ,january #af1 #aheb1 was educated at ,oberlin ,college and at ,colored ,catholic ,church in ,washington4 ,every seat was occupied when ,father ,tolton1 of ,quincy1 ,ill41 the only colored ,catholic priest in the ,united ,states1 began the celebration of solemn ,high ,mass4 ,immediately in front of and beneath the pulpit sat his ,eminence1 ,cardinal ,gibbons1 who delivered the sermon4 ,he was clad in scarlet robes4 ,at the conclusion of the sermon1 the ,cardinal welcomed the delegates in his own name1 and in the name of the clergy and of the congregation4 ,he said3 ',this gathering will mark an era in the history of the colored people of the ,united ,states1 for never before have colored ,catholics of the country met in convention4' ,he suggested that the convention discuss the education of the children--the religious education necessary to the life of the ,republic4 ,the universal level of the ,catholic ,church--its equality--was eloquently dilated upon1 and attention was directed to the fact that a colored priest had celebrated mass in comments upon the above report1 it adds3 ,the presence of a ,negro priest of pure lineage1 born a slave1 ordained at ,rome1 ,augustus ,tolton--the property of ,stephen ,elliot1 as the record stands in the ,vatican--the appearance of ,cardinal ,gibbons in his official robes to sanction the meeting1 his eloquent reference to the universality of the ,church of ,rome that 'knows neither ,north1 ,south1 ,east or ,west2 that knows neither ,jew nor ,gentile1 ,greek1 ,barbarian nor ,scythian1' may mislead the unwary as to the real object of the movement4 ,its real purpose is to propagate the ,roman ,catholic faith among the colored people4 ,so far as this meeting will secure from white ,protestants a greater interest in1 and a more ,christian recognition of1 the ,negro as an equal participant in the ,gospel plan1 we regard it as ,providential4 ,we are not ready to concede that the ,roman ,catholic ,church has been the friend of freedom1 of education1 of human rights and of progress4 ,we do not see that anything is gained by claiming for ,roman ,catholicism to-day1 or in the past1 what is clearly not so4 ,but the ,roman ,catholic ,church has placed itself squarely on the doctrine of the ,gospel as taught by ,christ upon the question of universal brotherhood4 ,prejudiced as many may be by long years of training against the tenets of this church1 all must acknowledge that this practice of the ,romanists as manifested in the presence of a black man on terms of perfect equality1 officiating at the altar of ,st4 ,augustine's ,church1 assisted on his right and left by white priests1 in the presence of his ,eminence ,cardinal ,gibbons1 will be put in striking contrast with that of the white ,american ,protestant churches who are willing on every occasion to sacrifice the ,negro to secure the co-operation of the ,south on other than ,gospel terms4 99 99 99 99 99 ,rev4 ,george ,w4 ,moore1 of the ,lincoln ,memorial ,congregational ,church1 at ,washington1 to whom we are indebted for a full account of the sessions of the ,congress1 comments upon it as follows3 ,mr4 ,d4,a4 ,rudd1 of ,cincinnati1 editor of the ,american ,catholic ,tribune1 a colored ,catholic paper1 was chosen permanent ,chairman4 ,upon assuming the office he spoke favorably of the attitude of the ,catholic ,church towards the ,negro1 saying especially3 ',the ,fatherhood of ,god and the brotherhood of man is taught and practised by the ,catholic ,church in no doubtful terms4' ,he advocated the starting of ,catholic schools and the aiding of those already started4 ,the following facts were presented by the ,committee on ,resolutions3 ,there are twenty colored ,roman ,catholic churches in the country1 each of which has a school annexed4 ,there are sixty-five other colored ,roman ,catholic schools2 eight colored ,roman ,catholic orphan asylums2 and three reformatories4 ,five thousand colored children are taught in these schools1 and three hundred children in the asylums4 ,seven colored students are preparing to become priests4 ,the ,pope from ,rome cabled his greetings in response to a cable from the ,congress1 saying3 ',the ,sovereign ,pontiff gladly and proudly blesses you with all his heart4' ,the influence1 patronage and wealth of the ,roman ,catholic ,church are all at the service of this movement1 and if ,protestants build up caste-churches in the ,south1 the ,romanists will not4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,among ,,the ,,tennessee ,,mountains4 ,,by ,,evangelist ,,james ,,wharton4 ,my visit to the people among the mountains was rather a departure from my usual work--that of preaching to the colored people4 ,i have preached here about two weeks1 the attendance being good1 and the interest deepening as the meetings went on1 until now we have more than a score who have professed to find ,jesus precious to their souls4 ,the condition of the natives in this vicinity is very sad4 ,their ignorance and pride coupled make it almost impossible to do anything for them4 ,the rough roads over the rocks and mountains make it a dangerous undertaking for them to attend church in the evenings4 ,several of us started for a meeting among them on a recent ,saturday afternoon1 with rubbers1 umbrellas and waterproofs1 prepared for mud and rain4 ,we crossed a rickety old wooden bridge that had been nearly washed away by the floods1 and commenced to climb the mountain side by a road that was nearly as steep as a steeple and which wended around to nearly every point of the compass1 ever going up1 over ruts and rocks1 roots and trunks of trees1 now jumping across a ravine1 and next climbing a fence4 ,at last among the thickets and brush there were some signs of life1 and we came to an opening among the trees where we saw a miserable-looking old shanty4 ,the first thought was1 can it be possible that human beings live in a shed like this8 ,we drew near and saw two women sitting with their knees up to the open fire on the hearth4 ,they looked much surprised to see us4 ,we told them that we were going to hold a meeting at a house a little farther on2 will they go8 ,no1 they don't care to go1 expectorating the tobacco juice from their mouths into the fire at the same time4 ,we replied1 ,you would better go2 it may be you will never have a chance to hear an ,englishman again2 to which we got a reply1 ,hear a w-h-a-a-t8 ,whether they knew what an ,englishman was1 or not1 or even if they ever heard there was such a country as ,england ,i cannot say2 but ,i understand there are thousands of these people who know nothing of the outside world1 and many who were never five miles away from their own door-step in their life4 ,with a patch of ground for corn1 another for tobacco1 with wood for the fire1 they are as contented as the ,president2 alas1 too contented6 ,we entered the cabin to which we were going by a door-way in which we must needs bend our heads very low to get inside4 ,the first thing that struck us was the gloom and darkness4 ,in each corner of the room was a bed1 with a smaller one pushed underneath1 and two sick people suffering from slow fever4 ,it is no wonder1 for eleven people occupied this one room1 about twelve feet square4 ,need we wonder that misery and squalor are seen all around8 ,an old soap box from the grocery formed a corner cupboard4 ,two old chairs which perhaps belonged to their great-grandmother1 all frame and no seat1 an empty box1 and a bucket of water with a tin scoop1 formed the whole furniture of the mountain cabin4 ,poor souls6 ,i was told that ,i had done wonders when one day1 during an address1 ,i got them to smile6 ,it was quite a treat to see a smile upon their faces4 ,joy seems to be outside their domain altogether1 and the worst feature appears to be that they have no desire for anything different4 ,if they get the idea that you think them low down and want to lift them up1 they at once commence to stretch themselves up to their full height and stand upon their dignity4 ,they will not fail to tell you plainly that you must not think they belong to the know-nothing class4 ,they know what is right and what is wrong1 without you coming here4 ,this is often said1 even by those who live immoral lives4 ,pride of race is often affected towards the colored people4 ,a colored man unfortunately had been drinking and was left at the depot4 ,some one stumbled against him1 saying1 ,i did not know it was a man2 ,i thought it was baggage4 ,his companion spoke up and said1 ,it isn't a man2 it's a nigger4 ,often their children are bright1 cheery-looking children1 well-behaved1 unassuming and quiet4 ,these poor mountain people might do well to take a few lessons from many of their despised1 dusky neighbors4 ,the whole work1 in my little time among these people1 has greatly touched my heart and drawn out my sympathies towards them4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,items ,,from ,,the ,,field4 ,trinity ,school1 ,athens1 ,ala43 ,during ,december there was a special religious interest in view of the meetings held by ,rev4 ,mr4 ,wharton1 your missionary evangelist4 ,the meetings were well attended by our students and by the people4 ,these meetings were greatly blessed to the quickening and upbuilding of ,christians1 and twelve persons professed conversion4 ,all of our pupils except one1 above the primary department1 are professing ,christians4 ,our student prayer meetings are exceedingly precious seasons to teachers and pupils4 ,we have just organized a ,young ,people's ,society of ,christian ,endeavor which promises to be very helpful4 ,on account of these meetings we could not make our usual preparations for a ,christmas concert and presents to the children4 ,accordingly1 we invited them all to our parlors to a reception on ,wednesday the #bfth1 and to our great surprise1 there came a ,christmas box on ,tuesday1 with presents for every one1 greatly to the joy of the little ones1 yes1 and of the large ones also4 ,after the distribution of the gifts1 delightful music bubbled from every throat1 and the universal testimony was1 ',this is the best ,christmas ,i ever spent4' ,straight ,university1 ,new ,orleans1 ,la43 ,we are having a glorious revival4 ,every night during the ,week of ,prayer there have been glad hearts4 ,i think there is scarcely a boarding student who is not thoroughly aroused4 ,most are seeking the ,saviour4 ,eighteen have found peace4 ,many day students1 and others who are not students1 have been much interested4 ,one young man who has been a scoffer at all good things1 came to the meetings1 and soon came under the influence and asked us to pray for him4 ,as ,i write in ,stone ,hall1 ,i hear on all sides the sound of prayer and singing4 ,the new church at ,crossville1 ,tenn41 was dedicated on ,sunday1 ,dec4 #cjth4 ,the new building is very tasteful and convenient1 in a beautiful and central location4 ,six new members were received--all ,northern people4 ,the house was full both morning and evening4 ,much interest was shown4 ,rev4 ,g4,s4 ,pope preached in the morning and ,rev4 ,s4,e4 ,lathrop in the evening4 ,sherwood ,academy opened its new winter term with increasing numbers4 ,the school is gaining favor with all classes and is doing an excellent work4 99 99 99 99 99 ,habits and ,manners1 is the title of a neat little volume by ,mrs4 ,w4,a4 ,armstrong1 of ,hampton1 ,va4 ,it is made up of the lectures delivered by ,mrs4 ,armstrong to the students of the ,institution1 and is a remarkably clear statement of the rules that should govern the habits and manners of ladies and gentlemen4 ,these lectures1 though originally addressed to colored students1 are equally applicable to white people1 for here1 at least1 color makes no difference4 ,the book has many other items of interest1 as for example1 rules for cooking1 recipes1 etc4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,chinese4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,glimpse ,,at ,,shady ,,side4 ,,rev4 ,w4,c4 ,,pond1 ,d4,d4 ,our friends will get a quite one-sided and mistaken view of our work among the ,chinese1 as of any other missionary work1 if they have nothing but the sunny-side reports to read4 ,it is a war that we are waging1 and war is serious business4 ,the varied fortune of the battle involves defeats1 incidental and temporary1 on the way to the final victory4 ,sometimes it is hope deferred4 ,there are ,chinese in whom we have come to be deeply interested1 for whom we have long prayed1 who have for years been among the most constant and most pleasing of our pupils1 and for years have been convinced that an idol is nothing1 but that the ,god of the ,bible is the only true ,god1 and the ,christ of the ,gospel the only true ,saviour1 who stop just there4 ,over and over again we ask about them1 only to find them still just there4 ,not a step forward seems to have been taken1 and meanwhile time--weeks that grow to months1 and months that grow even to years-- time that might be full of service1 runs to waste4 ,the heart gets sick with this hope deferred4 ,then there are cases of disappointment4 ,bright hopes have darkened almost to the blackness of very despair4 ,a brother whose conversion1 7must ,i say apparent conversion87 has seemed to be unusually clear2 whose walk as a ,christian seemed1 while he was with us1 to be well-nigh perfect2 whose spirit was singularly humble1 devout and ,christly2 who was growing rapidly in knowledge of the word1 and could already preach the word with power1 goes back to his home in ,china4 ,sore pressure is brought to bear upon him1 and he pays some sort of homage at an idol's shrine4 ,he feels forthwith condemned4 ,he will not be a hypocrite1 and therefore will no longer profess to be a ,christian4 ,now that he has returned to ,california1 he is ashamed1 he says1 to show himself among the brethren4 ,he stands aloof2 keeps out of sight1 and thus takes the very path along which ,judas hastened to his doom4 ,in vain do we show him the better way of faith2 in vain speak to him of ,peter1 or of the ,father's welcome to the prodigal1 and the delight we once had in him adds soreness to the heartache of our disappointed hope4 ,these are not solitary cases4 ,yet we may thank ,god that they represent not the general rule1 but the exceptions4 ,the general rule is that of constancy and faithfulness1 and these exceptions are such as occurred even in the ,apostolic ministries3 how much more to be expected in ours6 ,yet the pain they bring and the shadow they cast are none the less real and deep4 ,another element in shady side arises in a quite different quarter4 ,coming events cast their shadows before1 and these shadows just now obscure our sunny side4 ,we resolve not to be worried about to-morrow1 and yet we must not enter doors that open except we first count the cost4 ,that coming event is a deficit that seems inevitable1 unless we shut our ears to what sound like the calls of ,god4 ,our plan heretofore has been to listen to these calls and answer them if possible1 believing that he who gives the commission will not fail to supply the means4 ,nor has this faith been put to shame4 ,yet1 when the rules of arithmetic confront one at every summing of his probable resources and subtracting of his fixed expenditures1 and the figures1 like fleshless1 bony fingers1 point him to deficits and unpaid bills impending1 then1 even while faith maintains her hold1 it cannot be denied that shadows cross our path4 ,our friends who have helped us hitherto must expect some urgent appeals before this fiscal year is ended4 ,the utmost economy shall be practised4 ,each dollar shall be made to do full service1 if care and watchfulness on our part can assure this1 but the work must not be hindered4 ,souls are at stake1 priceless and immortal4 ,i have not yet reached the end of my catalogue of shadows1 but ,i soon tire of looking at the shady side4 ,shadow pre-supposes sunshine1 and sunshine there is1 clear1 abundant1 having cheer in it for the present and promise for the
