that the grand solution of the problem is in the ,christian enlightenment and the industrial progress of the ,negro4 ,may ,god grant that the ,christians of this land may not fail to see their special responsibilities and to meet them in the spirit of ,christian liberality and self-sacrifice4 99 99 99 99 99 ,large ,gifts of the ,wealthy4 ,it is refreshing to find in this grasping1 selfish and money-making world that there are wealthy men who amass fortunes and use them for noble purposes4 ,it is said that growing wealth only tightens the grip on the money and hardens the heart against the calls of benevolence4 ,but the examples are accumulating that give shining evidence that there are noble exceptions4 ,mr4 ,hand has added his name to the number4 ,he knows the needs of the colored people1 and he devotes a vast fortune to their benefit4 ,but ,mr4 ,hand has not exhausted the opportunities1 even in the range of the work of this ,association1 for blessing needy races of men1 or of aiding in the varied forms of effort for the colored people4 ,the mountain regions of the ,south present an unique and promising field of effort4 ,the inhabitants are a noble people1 descendants of some of the best races that settled ,america4 ,their mountain isolation separated them from the people around them4 ,the want of schools and churches left them ignorant1 their thin mountain lands kept them poor2 but they never held slaves and they were loyal to the ,union in the war4 ,railroads now penetrate their mountains and valleys1 and the hitherto unused wealth of mines and timber is brought to light4 ,a new future opens out to these people1 and the question is1 ,shall that future be one of prosperity and piety1 or one of intemperance and infidelity8 ,some other man wise and wealthy can do for these people what ,daniel ,hand has done for the primary and industrial education of the ,negroes4 ,but this does not exhaust the opening for large investments in the work of the ,association4 ,the ,indians are fewer in number than the blacks or whites of the ,south1 and their future will sooner be determined by their being incorporated into the national life as citizens1 yet that problem is not settled1 and a large fund could be wisely used for their benefit4 ,then1 too1 our higher schools and colleges need endowment1 and our church work should be indefinitely expanded4 ,if this review does not succeed in drawing large gifts for these several objects1 it may at least serve to show that our wants are not all provided for1 and that smaller contributors have still the duty and the privilege of aiding by gifts and prayer this good work of patriotism and ,christianity4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,southern ,,situation4 ,the position of the ,south is becoming once more clearly defined4 ,before the war1 it was fully formulated thus3 ,the ,negroes are an inferior race1 and slavery is their divinely ordained condition4 ,to this was added3 ,the ,negro question is purely local1 and with it no one outside of the ,south has any right to interfere4 ,to these axioms agreed the press1 the pulpit and the politician4 ,but the war came as an earthquake1 with the utter upheaval of these firm foundations4 ,during the years of reconstruction and political agitation1 uncertainty prevailed1 but now again the ,southern position is becoming settled4 ,it is the old position with a variation4 ,it runs3 ,the ,negroes are an inferior race1 and must be held as a peasant class in subjection to the superior white race4 ,to this the warning is again added3 ,this is purely a domestic affair1 and all outsiders must keep tongues and hands off4 ,this revised version of the old theory is proclaimed by ,senator ,eustis in his now somewhat famous article in the ,forum4 ,more recently it has been re-affirmed in the fervid eloquence of ,mr4 ,grady1 of ,atlanta1 in his address at ,dallas1 ,texas4 ,this is the same orator 7he is an orator7 who a few years since electrified the whole country by his speech at the ,new ,england dinner1 on the ,new ,south4 ,but the logic of ,southern events has driven him down again to the platform of the ,old ,south4 ,more recently still1 the ,governor of ,south ,carolina1 in his message to the ,legislature1 has taken the same position4 ,these three gentlemen1 representing the press and the politician1 are sustained by the pulpit in the ,south4 ,for example1 the ,presbyterian church ,south repels all overtures for re-union with the ,presbyterian church ,north1 because such a re-union would involve a practical recognition of the equal manhood of the inferior race4 ,the ,presbyterian church ,south does not stand alone on this platform4 ,other denominations are arrayed side by side with it1 and we fear that even the ,congregationalists in the ,south1 with two ,conferences in the same ,state1 one white and the other black1 are in danger of being numbered with them4 ,this is the ,southern position4 ,it portends the renewal of the old antagonism4 ,it repels the ,north1 denying its right to interfere1 and thus draws again the sectional line2 and above all1 it sets up sharply the antagonism of races1 consigning the ,negro permanently to an inferior place4 ,this implies1 of course1 that if the ,negro will not quietly accept this place1 he must be compelled to do so by force of arms1 and in this struggle the ,north is notified that it has no right to interfere4 ,we can only express our amazement at this theory6 ,with the memory of the war so fresh1 when the ,north broke over all warnings against interference1 and stepped in to aid the helpless slave1 can the ,south now hope to make these warnings any more efficacious8 ,can it hope that the ,north will acquiesce in a quasi slavery1 that sets aside substantially all that it gained and established by the long war8 ,and if the struggle comes again1 what hope of success can the ,south cherish8 ,if in the last national struggle1 it was overpowered when the slave1 as ,mr4 ,grady acknowledges1 guarded the house while his master fought for his perpetual enslavement1 what can it do when the ,negroes have tasted freedom for a quarter of a century1 and now number nearly as many as the whites in the ,south8 ,it is for the white people of the ,south to say whether that struggle shall come4 ,the ,north does not desire it1 the ,negro does not desire it1 and we sincerely believe that a large share of the people of the ,south do not want it4 ,rev4 ,dr4 ,haygood1 the efficient agent of the ,slater ,fund1 in a recent article in ,the ,independent1 in reply to ,senator ,eustis1 voices1 as we hope1 the sentiments of thoughtful and influential ,southerners4 ,but it remains to be seen whether these wise counselors will be heard4 ,such voices were uttered before the war1 but they were drowned in the noise of sectional hatred and the imperious demands of slavery4 ,god grant that the sad lesson of the past may be heeded4 ,in the meantime1 the ,a4,m4,a4 will continue its efforts at what it believes to be the true solution of the ,southern problem--the ,christian1 educational and industrial advancement of the colored people4 ,with the help of the great benefaction of ,mr4 ,hand1 whose money was made in the ,south1 and is now consecrated to the ,south1 we shall go forward with greater zeal and encouragement4 ,we are not partizans2 we are not sectionalists4 ,we are working for the good of both whites and blacks1 and for the peace and prosperity of our common country4 ,the election of ,benjamin ,harrison as ,president of the ,united ,states1 and the restoration of the ,republican party to power1 awakens special attention to the probable attitude of both towards the great ,southern problem4 ,we have no opinion to express on the subject1 and we have no interest in it as a mere party question1 but only as it may lead to the sober and earnest investigation of that transcendently important problem which requires the unbiased and honest consideration of the patriot1 the statesman and the ,christian4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the combination of the ,christian powers of ,europe for the suppression of the nefarious ,african slave-trade is a measure sanctioned by ,christianity and humanity1 and is in the interest of the world's commerce4 ,the effort can be hopefully undertaken4 ,the abolition of slavery in the ,western ,hemisphere--once the great slave mart--confines the outlet of the traffic to the eastern coast of ,africa1 and the blockade can be made more effective than when both sides of the great week ,i made a call at the home of one of my pupils whose mother was sick4 ,as ,i entered the room ,i could not distinguish the faces of those who sat about the fire1 for the room had no windows4 ,the only light that came in was through a door in an outer room1 and it seemed to let in more cold than light4 ,i wondered how much work or enjoyment could be got out of such dark1 small quarters1 while the sick woman told of her struggle with sickness and poverty4 ,she also gave me some history of her early life1 which showed a great lack of necessary instruction in what are the best things4 ,the children of this home look like sickly plants which have always lived in the dark and which have never felt the invigorating influence of ,god's beautiful sunshine4 ,we are praying that the sunshine of ,god's love may be felt in the hearts of this people1 even if there are no windows in their homes to let it in4 ,from a pastor in ,kentucky3 ,we are busily at work in this mountain country1 and as we think of wider possibilities for the mountain boys1 you cannot imagine our gratitude in view of our hopes that a new industrial department will be opened4 ,it has been the subject of many a prayer in the closet and in teachers' meetings1 and we feel that all that is needed will be supplied according to ,his riches who gave himself for us4 ,he has heard our united petitions for a pastor to gather the straying flock and relieve our overworked missionaries4 ,we held our weekly teachers' meeting on ,friday4 ,last evening as we were sitting together as usual1 one spoke of the coming pastor1 when lo1 he was ushered in4 ,he has really come4 ,we rejoice in our work1 but we see so much just ahead4 ,i long for the time to come when this interesting people shall be a 'peculiar' people in the better sense4 ,from a teacher at ,jonesboro1 ,tenn43 ,each week brings new accessions to the school3 there are now nearly a hundred enrolled4 ,all the seats in the primary room are in use1 so that when ,miss ,smith has a full school she has to seat some of her scholars in chairs4 ,the seats in ,miss ,page's room are also full4 ,we have eight pupils who room here and board themselves4 ,four of them come from ,scott ,co41 ,va41 coming ninety miles4 ,they are young men and women1 but they have had very little opportunity for education4 ,they are anxious to learn and try to carefully obey the rules of the school4 ,we hope they will gain much from church and ,sunday-school and the influences thrown around them here1 as well as the lessons from the school room4 ,yesterday we had applications from four others from the same region for accommodations--a young married man and his little daughter1 seven years old--a young man and a young woman4 ,we said1 ',come and we will do our best for you2' but if others apply we shall have to tell them we are full4 ,these are just the kind of people we want2 eager to learn and willing to do the best they can4 ,from a school in ,north ,carolina3 ,your letter of the #bhth1 informing us that we can have assistance from the ,hand ,fund for a certain number of pupils1 is received1 and we have had a continual thanksgiving ever since4 ,if ,i could tell you how the mothers looked when ,i told them1 and if ,i could put down the tones of their voices as well as their words1 you would be sure that the help is appreciated4 ,the pastor of the church and teacher of the ,theological ,department of ,straight ,university writes us3 ,the religious interest has so deepened that for several weeks ,i have been preaching three times a week4 ,four or five prayer meetings have been started by the students of their own accord in each other's rooms4 ,eleven united with us on profession of faith at our last communion1 and as many more have made a start at different meetings1 and will unite with us at the next communion4 ,a remarkable feature about the work is the fact that numbers of the older students who are most deeply interested are ,roman ,catholics4 ,one young man who united with us is a ,spaniard from ,matamoras1 ,mexico1 and has been educated as a ,roman ,catholic4 ,i believe he may be counted on to do loyal service in his native city4 ,in this way the ,a4,m4,a4 is ever doing 'foreign work1' and work which ,i believe will tell in ,mexico1 ,cuba1 and the ,central ,american ,states4 ,if some benevolent friend in the ,north would send us twenty-five copies of ,stalker's ,life of ,christ1 it would be of great help in this work4 ,information respecting a very interesting revival of religion comes to us from ,sherwood1 ,tenn4 ,increased religious interest is reported from ,fisk ,university1 ,nashville1 ,tenn4 ,the teachers in the ,normal ,school at ,lexington are taking new courage in their work in view of their increasing entering the new ,christian college in ,canton were formerly ,sunday-school scholars in ,america4 ,most of these converted ,chinamen who return to their own country are said to take their part in various forms of ,christian work4 ,what an inspiration to the patient teacher1 who spends an hour or more every ,sunday in trying to ,christianize a single ,chinaman1 to think that1 in this indirect way1 he1 or more frequently she1 may be helping on the conversion of ,china4--,the ,congregationalist4 ,these very just remarks are equally applicable to the work the ,american ,missionary ,association is doing so largely and effectively among the ,chinese on the ,pacific coast4 ,a letter from ,mr4 ,pond gives us this corroborative item3 ,on ,monday evening1 ,november #bf1 we expect to hold a farewell meeting for ,joe ,jet1 once one of our missionary helpers1 who is going back to ,china to superintend missionary operations for our ,chinese ,missionary ,society4 ,he takes over #a1ajj spent a long and useful life in service for others4 ,she comes into that office now and again to see if her gift is increasing4 ,she is not fashionably dressed4 ,no6 ,she never drives to the ,congregational ,house in a carriage4 ,i doubt if she often enjoys the luxury of a street-car ride1 although she is upward of seventy years of age2 and yet she never comes through that office door but she brings with her the bright glory of spiritual sunshine1 and the wealth of her ,lord's own presence4 ,she is pinching herself in almost painful economy that she may have #ajj to give to this great hold in my hand a letter written upon this scrap of paper by a colored boy in the ,south and sent to one of our missionaries who had come ,north3 ,oct4 #ba4 ,my ,dear ,friend1 ,mr4 ,brown--,i wish you would if you please if you please send me three dollars and a half now if you please send it ,i want to buy a good little shot gun please send it4 ,these facts present the double responsibility which the ,a4,m4,a4 sustains to its constituency in this vast and complex missionary work4 ,none of these facts are exceptional in character4 ,the ,association must so present its work to the churches as to constrain them to give2 drag them by the chains of ,christian duty to give2 those who can of their abundance abundantly2 those who must of their penury1 with this tremendous self-sacrifice4 ,an old colored preacher in ,georgia1 in my hearing1 preached on ,pasteboard ,christians4 ,he said3 ,brethren1 did you neber see a pasteboard box8 ,it's mighty nice2 maybe all covered with gilt paper2 looks right stiff and stout1 but you just set it out in the rain and see it when it goes 'pooh1' and am all omnatiously busted4 ,it am jest so with some ,christians4 ,they comes to meetin' with good clothes on2 they looks drefful fine6 ,but you just pass the contribution box 'round1 da goes 'pooh6' and dar ain't nothin' left of 'em4 ,it has not been my experience that there are many pasteboard ,christians in the district of ,new ,england4 ,systematic giving1 giving constantly1 giving because the safety of our country requires it1 and the kingdom of ,christ demands it2 this is the sort of giving which ,i have found to be the rule4 ,but there must be systematic spending as truly as systematic giving4 ,the gifts of the churches must be husbanded1 and the churches must be warned from time to time against wasteful and unwise efforts1 by which others are seeking to do the work1 which is being done systematically through your agent1 the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,my personal experience as ,field ,superintendent1 has pressed upon me the imperative importance of this side of the responsibility which this ,association holds to the churches4 ,one must pass back and forth often1 and become personally familiar with this great field1 before he can understand the importance of the systematic spending of this ,association4 ,wrecks of schools and churches are not few in the ,southland4 ,godly men and women and godless adventurers have experimented in many places4 ,money has been and is being wasted1 that might be used to great and permanent advantage if contributed through the ,a4,m4,a4 and disbursed according to the principles which long experience has proved to be sound4 ,it is the purpose of this paper to emphasize some of the facts concerning this great missionary field1 and to point out the advantages of systematic spending1 which you secure when you commit your funds to this society rather than to the hap-hazard efforts which you have no power to supervise and no control over4 ,an organized society controlled and directed by those who contribute is the surest possible way of securing this systematic spending4 ,this method has both negative and positive advantages3 ,i4 ,it prevents waste4 7a47 ,waste in administration of funds4 ,its accounts are open to and audited by those whose money is being spent4 ,reports of the financial standing1 receipts and expenditures to the half-penny are presented every year4 ,look them over and note how minutely your accounts are kept4 ,officers and missionaries are held by you to strictest responsibility4 ,this is sound business sense applied to missionary work4 ,but one naturally asks why1 when such absolute safeguards are thrown around the administration of the funds committed to the ,a4,m4,a41 some of those who established those safeguards give a considerable portion of their money to individuals over whose expenditure they have absolutely no control1 and where funds may be1 and often are1 wasted8 ,and in this way the percentage of the cost of administering the funds committed to the ,a4,m4,a4 is also increased4 ,this can scarcely be called sound business wisdom4 7b47 ,waste in field work4 ,it requires wide experience and knowledge of the whole field in order to adjust and direct1 without waste of laborers1 the force of missionaries4 ,those who know only one locality cannot do this4 ,it is often remarked that each missionary thinks his particular field the most important1 and the one especially needing help and enlargement4 ,this is a grand tribute to their faithfulness and ,christian enthusiasm4 ,but the systematic investigation of the whole field1 constantly and patiently carried on as it is by the ,a4,m4,a41 determines with larger wisdom whether work should be strengthened and developed in ,tennessee1 or ,georgia1 or ,texas4 ,gen4 ,grant was familiar with the whole field1 and placed his men according to the varying exigencies of the campaign4 ,just so the systematic methods of this ,association place these noble missionaries where there will be least waste of labor4 ,but there are also positive advantages secured by the systematic methods of the ,a4,m4,a4 in expending the money committed to its treasury4 ,,ii4 ,it secures proportion in different parts of the work4 7a47 ,in appeal4--,this ,association1 constituted1 as it is1 the immediate agent of the churches1 ought to be your watchman on the tower4 ,every pastor is crowded with parish duties4 ,few intelligent laymen can give time enough to study thoroughly the whole field covered by the missions of the ,a4,m4,a4 ,it is now an enormous field4 ,representatives of five distinct races1 ,japanese1 ,chinese1 ,indians1 ,mountain ,whites and ,negroes wait for ,christian instruction very largely upon the missionaries you are sending out4 ,now1 no one who is not compelled by official duties to do it can find time1 nor has he the information at hand1 to investigate thoroughly each department of this missionary work4 ,the ,a4,m4,a4 is your agent to discover1 through careful and patient investigation1 the exact facts1 and so to direct its appeals to the churches that the department of work which is especially pressing may be given due prominence4 ,systematic spending involves this4 7b47 ,greatest care is required and exercised in planting new work4 ,let us in fancy plant a new school in the ,south1 as the ,association does it4 ,exhaustive correspondence is of course1 the first step4 ,then the ,field ,superintendent visits the field4 ,he gathers every possible fact bearing upon the question3 ,the population2 schools1 if any2 the opinions of white and colored citizens2 the religious complexion of the community1 etc41 etc41 etc4 ,now this ,field ,superintendent has studied maps and statistics and school reports1 and been back and forth until the whole field is in his mind1 not simply this one locality4 ,these facts in extenso are reported to the officers in ,new ,york4 ,conferences many and patient are held over them until finally it is settled that this place rather than some other shall be selected for the new school4 ,now such care as this would be impossible except as the ,a4,m4,a41 through its officers and teachers1 knew the whole field4 ,by independent or individual effort this could not be done4 ,it is not the absolute1 but the comparative need and hopefulness that determine the wisdom of fixing upon a certain place for a school or church4 ,this comparative need can only be known by an organized society which has frequent and abundant communication with the whole field1 and has officers whose business it is to know that field4 ,the experiments being tried in different places have already been made by the ,a4,m4,a41 and proved to be either absolutely failures or relatively an uneconomic use of funds4 ,the saving to you who furnish the money is very great by this method of systematic spending4 ,let me illustrate by a single example which occurred only a few months ago4 ,two towns1 only a few miles apart1 were clamoring for help in school work4 ,we opened a school tentatively in one of these places1 as we had one missionary there already1 and ,i visited the other place4 ,this is what ,i found3 ,a teacher independent of any society1 and consequently knowing only a small part of the ,south1 had opened a school4 ,she had labored very faithfully1 but very unwisely1 putting money and years of hard work into a field which1 from its very conditions1 could not be largely successful4 ,she had a poor building for teachers' home1 a rough school-house with no desks1 a narrow strip of land1 and an enrollment of about eighty pupils4 ,she was anxious to have the ,a4,m4,a4 take the work4 ,she informed me that in order to secure it1 it would be necessary to pay out from #b1ejj to #c1jjj in paying debts and putting the buildings in shape for advantageous use4 ,this was the case then3 ,a fairly good house1 a rough school-house1 a bit of land1 and a school of less than one hundred pupils1 costing at least #b1ejj4 ,at the other point under discussion1 there were five acres of land1 five buildings1 an enrollment of about #bej pupils1 and the whole property could be secured for #fjj6 #b1ejj vs4 #fjj4 ,these are not very exceptional cases4 ,it is only fair to the generous constituency of this ,association to know that their funds are being thus guarded1 and that those who give through independent agencies may have their funds squandered because they cannot hold those doing this independent work to strict account as they do the ,association1 nor can these independent missionaries know the whole field as the ,a4,m4,a4 knows it4 ,here are nearly #ejj missionaries in constant correspondence with this office1 besides the field officers appointed especially to gather information4 7c47 ,again1 this systematic method of disbursing funds secures a methodical arrangement of field work4 ,take the mountain field as an illustration of this4 ,this field has been divided into two general districts2 one having for its base the ,l4,n4,r4,r41 the other lying along the ,cincinnati ,southern ,railroad4 ,each department has its general missionary1 who goes back and forth in his district to lay out new work1 and to superintend the old4 ,the missionaries1 pastors and teachers are all busy in their own places4 ,here then is systematic development of this whole work4 ,these noble missionaries in this way form a well-organized army1 and are not guerrillas fighting behind trees and stones1 and scattered hap-hazard over the mountains4 ,we shall hold these lines of railroad in the name of the ,lord4 ,churches and missions and ,sunday-schools will supplant the saloons and gambling hells if you as churches generously support this painfully urgent work4 ,but when school-houses shall stand in all their fertile coves and church bells shall call to intelligent ,christian worship on all those mountain sides1 and the people shall be lifted up into spiritual citizenship1 it will simply be the victory under ,god of the systematic planning and execution possible only when funds are disbursed on the sound principles of this ,association4 ,,iii4 ,this systematic spending of benevolent funds also secures permanency4 ,how few deaths there are in the family of ,a4,m4,a4 schools and churches6 ,why8 ,because these missions are born through wisdom and sound judgment4 ,these schools and churches are not only permanent but they will also perpetuate the great fundamental principles of the churches whose prayers and money have gone into their establishment4 ,these missions cannot become ,roman ,catholic or infidel4 ,they cannot drift away from the safe moorings of evangelical truth1 unless the churches to which they are tied up give way4 ,the churches control these missions forever4 ,local management in this work often means mismanagement1 on account of the peculiar surroundings in which these schools are placed4 ,they differ radically from schools and colleges planted among the new settlers in the ,west4 ,here in the ,south there is no considerable intelligent ,christian constituency to direct their work1 manage their affairs and keep them in close connection with ,congregational conferences and councils4 ,,iv4 ,lastly4 ,by means of this systematic spending you keep step with the grand onward movement of ,god's providence in the marvelous openings of this great missionary field4 ,how wonderfully this work develops6 ,the primary schools of the early period have grown into normal and preparatory institutes and colleges and theological seminaries1 although the primary work is still being done and well done6 ,new schools are being planted4 ,enter the mountains with your mission host1 came the command1 and it was done4 ,industrial training became necessary to the best furnishing of these young people for their life-work and their largest intellectual development1 and now thorough training in these departments is furnished by the schools of the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,the grand work has kept step with the developing needs4 ,i asked one of the most experienced teachers and missionaries in the ,south what feature of the ,a4,m4,a4 especially impressed him4 ,he replied at once1 ,the wonderful and consummate statesmanship displayed in its management4 ,the wisdom manifested in planting schools and churches1 and in keeping pace with the new and constantly changing conditions of this great and perplexing field1 absolutely astounds me4 ,this is no tribute to those of us who have recently entered this service4 ,to sum up this argument1 then3 ,by the systematic method of spending through the ,a4,m4,a41 you avoid-- ,i4 ,waste1 7#a47 ,in administration4 7#b47 ,in field work4 ,,ii4 ,you secure the wisest apportionment of the work1 7#a47 ,appeals are systematic4 7#b47 ,the work is developed proportionately4 7#c47 ,and each department is systematically conducted4 ,,iii4 ,you can secure permanency in the work1 7b47 ,and perpetuate the principles you believe to be of fundamental importance in uplifting these races4 ,,iv4 ,you keep step with ,god's providence in the development of these fields4 ,it is told us that during the days that immediately preceded the capture of ,richmond1 ,sheridan was in hot pursuit of ,lee's retreating troops4 ,he telegraphed to ,grant1 ,i think if the thing is pushed ,lee will surrender4 ,there came flashing back this laconic message from that silent soldier1 ,push things4 ,they were pushed1 and within a few weeks ,lee's army was annihilated1 and the sword of the haughty rebel was in the hands of the loyal ,grant4 ,the ,union army had pushed through the broken fortifications around ,richmond and planted the grand old stars and stripes1 battle-stained and bullet-torn1 above the dome of the rebel capitol1 never1 never1 never to be pulled down again by disloyal hands4 ,my brethren1 there comes flashing to us to-day from this army of ,christ-like men and women away out yonder in front of us1 from out the heat of battle against ignorance1 and prejudice1 and misery1 and reached the place of which ,i could never formulate a picture4 ,seven years' acquaintance in this mountain country has not changed my opinion4 ,we are in another world1 and if ,i could describe that world so you could see it as it is1 could feel its needs as we feel them day by day1 it is all ,i could ask4 ,philosophers might describe it as the dead centre of motion2 at least it has remained seemingly unmoved1 while all the world around it has been moving forward4 ,here in these mountains live over two million people1 two-thirds of whom have never written nor received a letter1 could not read one if printed and sent them4 ,they take no newspapers1 and the great events of nations or discoveries of science have been nothing to them4 ,questions of vital importance to our country have never troubled them4 ,they knew there was a war1 for contending armies met on their grounds4 ,with few exceptions their sympathies were with the ,union4 ,too poor to own slaves to any extent1 they had no motive for seceding1 and many of them joined our army and were faithful soldiers4 ,at the close of the war1 they went back to their secluded homes1 and between them and the world the curtain fell again4 ,we very well know that mortals cannot rise above their surroundings only within defined limits4 ,alas6 for the defeated manhood and blasted womanhood in our land1 held down to earth by unfortunate surroundings4 ,they are looking to you for help4 ,you have done nobly in sustaining a work in their midst4 ,besides what you have done at ,pleasant ,hill1 ,grand ,view and other points1 you have enabled us to organize eight churches and build one academy and eight houses of worship4 ,you have sent among us most efficient teachers4 ,besides their school duties they have taken upon themselves to visit the homes1 to pray with the sick1 to distribute clothing among the needy1 to go to the homes of the students1 to share their humble fare and sleep in their crowded rooms4 ,they have spared neither time nor strength to carry the uplifting word to those needy souls4 ,from the better classes we have been fortunate enough to draw a nucleus for each of our churches4 ,we have some ,sunday-school superintendents that for zeal and tact are models in their work and many a ,northern school might rejoice in the possession of such officers4 ,they are not so well versed in ,scripture as we could wish1 but they spare neither time nor expense to prepare themselves for their work4 ,this class of people responds quickly to the new life that comes to them by the school1 the railroad or the business man4 ,if we could find as ready response in the masses as we find in the individuals1 our work in the mountains would be quickly done4 ,but1 alas6 what of these hundreds of thousands who seemingly have no more aspiration than the brute in their field8 ,they are wedded to the customs of their ancestors1 and they rebel at any innovation4 ,give them tobacco1 and whiskey1 and pistols1 a little meal and bacon and coffee1 a crude bed and a roof1 and that1 to them1 is living4 ,oh1 those purposeless lives6 ,they exist simply because they are in the world and cannot help it4 ,with the girls especially1 marriage is the chief aim1 and what should be the holy relation is entered upon almost in childhood4 ,as soon as they begin to lisp they are talking of their lovers4 ,a little wee girl came to a teacher's home1 and after answering in monosyllables the common questions as to schools and ,sunday-schools1 there was a lull in the conversation1 when she spoke up3 ,i hain't got no sweetheart4 ,for all marriage is the chief aim1 it is surprising how little preparation they make for it4 ,no bridal trousseau is ever thought of2 not even a new dress is made for the occasion4 ,i have seen many a bride in calf-skin shoes1 old calico dress1 long apron1 with no cuffs nor collar1 and her hair falling from her comb1 while the groom appeared with uncombed hair1 stogy shoes1 jean pants and in shirt sleeves4 ,we have no rollicking girls or boisterous boys2 we never see a crowing1 cooing baby4 ,the children are born old4 ,the babies have a sad and dejected look1 as if this world were a dreary wilderness of woe1 and they grieve they were ever born4 ,poor little ones in the ,southland6 how many are gathered home ere a twelve months' stay on earth4 ,besides this weary1 aged look of the children1 we frequently find those who look like walking corpses4 ,a little inquiry reveals the fact that they are clay eaters4 ,we have them in our schools4 ,in our ,jellico school1 we have children whose elder sisters had to sprinkle pepper around the hearthstones to keep them from digging out the clay and eating it4 ,the habit once formed1 it seems to last them during life2 where it ever originated ,i don't know1 but have no doubt it was from lack of proper nourishment4 ,our women6 how shall ,i describe them8 ,i wish ,i might picture them before you as they ride into town with their babies in their arms and a child or two on their horses with them1 or as they walk in with heavy1 dragging gait1 loaded with some produce for sale1 or as they stand for hours open-eyed and open-mouthed around the counters of some country store4 ,i wish you could see them in their cabin homes1 as bare of comfort as a wild desert waste1 or at work in the field with the family1 but always and everywhere with a chew of tobacco or a snuff stick in their mouths4 ,they never express a desire for what they have not1 nor a murmur at what they have1 but their very movements are a complaint--a wail4 ,on their face is ever seen that weary1 resigned1 passionless look4 ,they never lighten with joy or surprise4 ,if you could manage to fire a ,vesuvius before their eyes you would never know by any outward expression but that they had seen volcanoes every day of their lives4 ,there is no imagery1 no ideality4 ,the world to them is a humdrum routine1 a common-place affair4 ,they have no heroes1 and they look upon all men1 not as protectors1 but seducers1 not as beings formed in the image of a pure and holy ,god1 but in the image of a ,god of lust and debauchery4 ,when first going among these people1 the ludicrous or comical keeps presenting itself1 but as you stay year by year the terrible reality of their lives presses sore upon you4 ,you are cramped by their narrowness2 you are depressed by their lack of buoyancy2 you grow distrustful because of their perfidy2 you become sharer of their woes1 but they have no joys to share4 ,our work among them was begun none too soon4 ,the eye of the speculator is being turned to our mineral and timber resources1 and with unscrupulous money-makers for a centre and a demoralized people to gather round them1 and no ,christ in their midst1 what strongholds of ,satan would be formed4 ,when we commenced our work seven years ago the field was open to the ,congregationalists4 ,if we could have had means to have secured helpers we could have planted ourselves largely1 for we had continuous calls to come and organize churches4 ,the people of better minds are sick and tired of the church life around them2 they cannot indorse it and so are called infidels4 ,but we have found no infidels there2 still it takes no prophet to see that the reaction from this demoralized church life all through the mountains is going to create a great wave of infidelity unless real ,christians come to the rescue very soon4 ,how these things nerve us to increased efforts to save the children and youth from these ways of death4 ,our hope for the land is in saving them1 and our work is largely for them4 ,we have many ,sunday-schools connected with our churches and many others where we furnish some helps and where our students teach4 ,our ,bands of ,hope are encouraging4 ,our ,christian ,endeavor ,society has a large membership1 and is a power for good4 ,but while we rejoice over these places that have these helps we think of the hundreds of counties along this mountain range that have no such helps4 ,senator ,plumb has stated that the assessment in ,alabama for pistols1 guns and dirks is four times that on farming implements1 and ,kentucky's record of crime is far worse than ,alabama's4 ,who of us can say that he is innocent of this shed blood1 unless he is doing something toward sending the only cure--a ,christian civilization8 ,because the work has many discouragements1 are we excused8 ,because the people are prejudiced against us and our principles1 shall we withdraw1 and let them sink lower and lower8 ,but the question is asked3 ,have you no public schools or churches in this large section of the country8 ,yes1 schools for a few months in the year1 taught in little log school houses1 some with floors and some with none2 some with a tiny window and some without2 some have doors and some haven't4 ,very few have desks2 in most there are but slab benches4 ,but worse than the school house and its surroundings is the illiterate1 immoral teacher who attempts to teach the children4 ,as for church organizations they are numerous1 and a large majority are church members2 but alas for the ,christianity taught and practiced4 ,religion and morality are divorced4 ,with most of them1 religion is the thing of a moment and not of a life4 ,meetings once a month during the summer1 and that is all the ,christian institution the people have1 and we call it instruction4 ,we are inclined to smile at the thought of a preacher prefacing his sermon with the boast that he has no learning2 that his jeens coat has never brushed the chalk off college walls1 and what he has to say is no fixup of his own1 but direct from sac-rid writ or an inspiration of the ,speret4 ,but our smiles end with a sigh when we see that there is not only ignorance1 but the poison of asps is under their lips4 ,their hatred for all other churches than their own is intense4 ,they have no charity for any religion outside of their own church4 ,the excitement and strife for membership is unequalled even in the craze of their political wars4 ,they are bigoted and intolerant1 they have no idea of practical ,christianity4 ,they have no prayer-meeting1 no family prayers1 no ,sunday-schools4 ,one minister living near where we have recently planted some ,sunday-schools gave a whole sermon to talking against them1 and said if any one would show him from the ,bible where ,sunday-schools were taught he'd believe they were right2 but a few weeks later1 pressed by seeing our schools drawing so largely from the community1 he thought something must be done1 so with a few of his leading members they announced the organization of a school near ours4 ,they sent to ,jellico on ,saturday and bought two gallons of whiskey in order to draw the crowd4 ,of course1 such a school lasted but a few days1 but their hatred doesn't die so easily4 ,we could help many churches if it were not for this jealousy among their ministers4 ,the people are our friends1 and our growing churches are a stimulant to them4 ,paul said3 ,what matter if ,christ were preached through envy1 only so he were preached1 and if we can provoke them to good works1 will not the children be blessed8 ,whatever cause prompts them to church building1 to prayer or outward ,christian living1 they must be bettered by it4 ,and so1 slowly1 but steadily1 this great mass is going to be leavened4 ,it may not come in your day or mine1 but come it will1 and happy will we be in that far-off time to know that we had something to do in bringing about such needed results4 ,we are confident of success4 ,right must win since ,god is ,god1 and the day is coming when the great ,i ,am will dwell in all these churches4 ,then the bigot will say1 my brother2 the intolerant will grasp hands in loyal fellowship1 and ,christian hearts will pulsate in one common rhythm4 ,then will our mountains and hills break forth into singing1 and all the trees of the field girls4 ,the time allotted for this paper is far too limited for me to give more than a glimpse of their real condition4 ,in considering the needs of the colored women and girls of the ,south1 you must bear in mind their past condition1 present status and future prospects1 together with the forces that have contributed to each1 before you can know and feel the heart yearnings and struggles of my sisters4 ,no human lips can tell the story of that dark night that has left its impress upon the habits1 customs and life of a whole race of people4 ,the crudest results of that iniquitous system fell heaviest upon the colored woman4 ,from childhood1 no matter how favorably situated1 she was liable to become the doomed victim of the grossest outrages4 ,there was no assurance that she would not be a constant associate in the field with the coarsest and most ignorant men of both races1 or at any moment1 at the caprice of the master1 be sold4 ,swayed1 body1 mind and spirit1 by a master class who found it necessary to close every avenue of intelligence in order to accomplish his fiendish purposes1 this creature1 made in the image of ,god1 was often taught that there was no ,god of justice for her4 ,her body1 instead of being a fit temple for the indwelling of the ,holy ,spirit1 was subject to the foulest demands of sensuality4 ,no wonder they sang1 ,nobody knows the trouble ,i see1 ,lord1 ,nobody knows but ,jesus4 ,these slave songs1 born of agony1 might well be called ,the ,passion ,flowers of the slave cabin4 ,thank ,god that all of my sisters were not thus brutalized1 and even to those who were1 ,god was merciful4 ,deep down underneath the lacerated and bruised heart1 rested the ,shekinah of the ,lord1 preventing the wholesale transmission of vice4 ,two hundred and fifty years of such tuition gave her but little chance to develop her womanhood4 ,intuitively she knew that there was a living ,god1 and she sought ,him in visions1 and listened for ,his voice1 and looked forward and persevered for that home not made with hands1 and from her heart were wrung these words3 ,o ,lord1 ,o my ,lord1 ,o my good ,lord1 ,keep me from sinking down4 ,and then comforted1 she cried out triumphantly-- ,didn't my ,lord deliver ,daniel1 ,then why not every man8 ,many have told me their struggles1 and ,i know of others who even suffered death rather than submit to the outrage of chastity4 ,one poor mother with three beautiful baby girls1 driven to despair by realizing their probable doom if allowed to live1 sent them back to the ,god who gave them and then took her own life4 ,thus the colored women and girls lived before the war4 ,how have they fared since ,freedom8 ,have they had a fair chance in the race of life8 ,no4 ,they have met caste-prejudice1 the ghost of slavery1 at every step of their journey during these years of freedom4 ,they have been made to feel that they are a separate species of the human family4 ,the phrases ,your people and ,your place1 do not so much designate their race identity1 as the fixed status in the sisterhood of races4 ,this idea1 as harmless as it may appear1 or as much as it is used1 with varied phrases of meaning1 according to the attitude of the speaker1 has been one of the greatest barriers to the progress of the ,negro1 especially of the women and girls4 ,it has colored everything they have to do4 ,their place1 like the ebony of their skin1 is a dark place4 ,in the home1 and in social life1 their place is confined to colored society1 colored schools and colored churches4 ,be it understood1 ,i am not reflecting upon colored society1 but am pointing out the limitations that no other race in this country has to contend with1 in its efforts to rise4 ,the higher the plane of culture the colored women and girls reach1 the more sensitive they become1 and the more keenly the effects of ostracism are felt4 ,in wages it does not matter how capable she may be1 she must not aspire4 ,i have asked several persons1 ,what is the greatest need of the colored woman and girl8 and many have replied1 ,to be good servants4 ,assuming that this is her highest need1 can good servants be had without good wages8 ,in education1 her place is the colored school1 if there is one far or near1 and if there is no school for colored youth1 7as is sometimes the case7 the no-school is her place4 ,in religious life1 her place is the colored church4 ,no matter how her soul may long for a more intelligent ,gospel than perchance surrounds her1 she must find it there4 ,her place in the work of reform1 if she has fallen or desires to reform1 is the public street4 ,i could relate many incidents which have come under my personal observation in ,washington1 7and ,washington is far ahead of many places in the ,south7 to illustrate how our fallen sisters have suffered worse than death1 because doors have been shut against them4 ,several cases have been brought to me this year1 one since writing this paper1 but my sisters1 the sad fact is like the advent of our blessed ,lord1 there is no room in the inn for her4 ,what is the true place of our women and girls8 ,it is that place which is not circumscribed by the mere accident of birth and race1 where she can rise just as high as she has the ability to reach and sustain4 ,my five years' experience in ,europe as a ,jubilee ,singer gave me a taste of the sweets of true womanhood1 unfettered by caste-prejudice and by a low estimate of my position4 ,there my complexion was not a target for insult and ostracism4 ,our needs are not only those common to other races1 but are in a vast measure greater1 because of the past and present difficulties4 ,the masses furnish the most difficult problem to solve4 ,how can we rescue them from poverty and illiteracy1 and not pauperize them8 ,how can we prevent crime1 check immorality and decrease mortality8 ,the answer lies in giving to them better home life1 more elevating social surroundings1 better educational advantages in school and industries1 and a higher type of ,christian life and worship4 ,my first introduction into an intelligent idea of practical ,christianity was at ,fisk ,university4 ,there1 and at many similar institutions under the ,a4,m4,a41 may be found the epitome of a ,christian home4 ,such schools furnish potent object lessons2 such are the factors of the problem in answer to the question of how to meet the needs of the colored women and girls1 who are to preside over the homes of eight millions of people1 who had no home twenty-three years ago4 ,washington1 alone1 has a population of eighty thousand colored people1 and more than forty thousand of these are women and girls4 ,it is said that the hand that rocks the cradle1 rules the world4 ,it matters not whether that hand be black or white1 but it does matter whether that hand be intelligent or ignorant4 ,they not only need the education of the schools to develop their minds1 and industrial training to prepare their hands for the practical duties of life1 but ,christian education1 such as is given in the schools of the ,association4 ,more than three thousand women and thousands of men have gone out under the ,a4,m4,a41 in school1 home and church1 for the uplifting1 ,christianizing and elevating of our people4 ,eternity alone will reveal the work that these ,christian heroines and heroes have done in the ,master's name4 ,the eleventh chapter of ,hebrews would need be extended to give to them their rightful place in the role of achievements of faith4 ,we need not wait for eternity1 we now see some of the grand results2 their memory is already engraven upon the hearts1 and their spirit infused into the life of thousands of educated colored young men and women1 who have gone out among their people1 carrying educated minds1 trained hands and warm hearts1 as an outgrowth of that labor which has not been in vain4 ,this magnificent record of ,christian endeavor and conquest has largely been made possible by the foresight1 energy and fidelity of the many who have been and are at the head of the different departments of the ,a4,m4,a4 ,how can the ,association more fully meet these needs8 ,by continuing woman's work for woman1 through their ,woman's ,bureau4 ,through this agency1 ladies of the churches can furnish volunteers for the work and the base of supply4 ,while we at the front are in the heat of the battle1 you at home1 through your missionary societies1 young people's meetings1 and ,sunday-schools1 can aid us with your prayers1 your sympathy1 your gifts and service4 ,those in the larger churches can sustain a missionary in the field1 and may it be said of all1 both large and small1 ,they have done what they could4 ,then we can sing1 ,march on1 and you shall gain the victory1 ,march on1 and you shall gain the day4 ,my sisters1 we must first be touched by the ,spirit of the ,master1 and through him touch them4 ,this work cannot be done perfunctorily or
