,,earths ,,in ,,the ,,universe4 #a4 ,inasmuch as1 by the ,divine mercy of the ,lord1 the interiors which are of my spirit have been opened in me1 and it has thereby been given me to speak with spirits and angels1 not only with those who are near our ,earth1 but also with those who are near other earths2 and since ,i had an ardent desire to know whether there were other earths1 and to know their character and the character of their inhabitants2 it has been granted me by the ,lord to speak and have intercourse with spirits and angels who are from other earths1 with some for a day1 with some for a week1 with some for months2 and to be instructed by them respecting the earths from and near which they were1 and concerning the life1 customs1 and worship of their inhabitants1 besides various other things there that are worthy of note4 ,and since it has been given me to become acquainted with these matters in this way1 it is permitted me to describe them from the things which ,i have heard and seen4 ,it is necessary that it be known that all spirits and angels are from the human racea1 and that they are near their own earthsb1 and are acquainted with what is upon them2 and that a man may be instructed by them1 if his interiors are so far opened as to enable him to speak and be in company with them3 for man in his essence is a spiritc1 and is in company with spirits as to his interiorsd2 wherefore he whose interiors are opened by the ,lord1 is able to speak with them1 as man with mane4 ,it has now been granted me to enjoy this privilege daily for twelve years4 ,footnote3 the human race1 no4 #ahhj4 ,footnote b3 ,the spirits of every earth are near their own earth1 because they are of its inhabitants1 and of a similar genius2 and they are meant to be of service to them1 spirits and angels who are of such a character as he himself is1 nos4 #bcgi1 #cfde1 #djfg1 #djgc1 #djgg4 ,footnote e3 ,man is capable of speaking with spirits and angels1 and the ancients on our ,earth frequently spoke with them1 nos4 #fg1 #fh1 #fi1 #ghd1 #afcd1 #afcf1 #ghjb4 ,but at the present day it is dangerous for man to speak with them1 unless he be in a true faith1 and be led by the ,lord1 nos4 #ghd1 #idch1 #ajgea4 #b4 ,that there are many earths1 and men upon them1 and spirits and angels from them1 is very well known in the other life2 for in that life1 every one who from a love of the truth and consequent use desires it1 is allowed to speak with the spirits of other earths1 so as to be convinced that there is a plurality of worlds1 and informed that the human race is not from one earth only1 but from numberless earths2 and so as to be informed1 besides1 of what genius and life they are1 and of what character their ,divine worship is4 #c4 ,i have sometimes spoken on this subject with the spirits of our ,earth1 and it was said that a man of sound understanding may conclude1 from many things which he knows1 that there are more earths than one1 and that there are human beings upon them4 ,for it is an inference of reason1 that such huge bodies as the planets are1 some of which exceed this ,earth in magnitude1 are not empty bodies1 created only to be carried and to rotate around the sun1 and to shine with their scanty light 7lumen7 for the benefit of one earth only2 but that they must needs have a nobler use than this4 ,he who believes1 as every one ought to believe1 that the ,divine created the universe for no other end than the existence of the human race1 and of a heaven from it 7for the human race is the seminary of heaven71 cannot but believe that wherever there is an earth1 there are human beings4 ,that the planets1 which are visible to our eyes1 being within the boundaries of this solar system1 are earths1 may be clearly seen from the following considerations4 ,they are bodies of earthy matter1 because they reflect the sun's light 7lumen71 and1 when seen through the telescope1 appear1 not as stars shining from their flame1 but as earths 7terrae7 variegated with dark spots4 ,like our ,earth1 they are carried round the sun and advance progressively through the path of the zodiac1 which motion causes years1 and seasons of the year1 which are spring1 summer1 autumn1 and winter4 ,they likewise rotate upon their own axis1 just as our ,earth does1 and this rotation causes days1 and times of the day1 that is1 morning1 mid-day1 evening1 and night4 ,and moreover1 some of them also have moons1 which are called satellites1 which perform their revolutions around their globes in stated times1 as the moon does around ours4 ,the planet ,saturn1 because it is so very far distant from the sun1 has also a great luminous ring1 which supplies that earth with much1 although reflected1 light4 ,how is it possible for any one who is acquainted with these facts1 and thinks from reason1 to assert that such bodies are uninhabited8 #d4 ,i have1 moreover1 spoken with spirits to the effect that men may be led to believe that there are more earths in the universe than one1 by considering the immensity of the starry heaven with its innumerable stars1 each of which1 in its own place1 that is1 in its own system1 is a sun1 and like our sun1 but differs in magnitude4 ,any one who rightly weighs these facts must conclude that so immense a whole cannot but be the means to an end which is the final end of creation1 and that this end is a heavenly kingdom1 in which the ,divine may dwell with angels and men4 ,for the visible universe1 that is1 the heaven resplendent with such an innumerable multitude of stars1 which are so many suns1 is merely a means for the existence of earths1 and of human beings upon them1 from whom a heavenly kingdom may be formed4 ,from these considerations a rational man cannot but think that a means so immense to an end so great was not provided for a human race1 and a heaven from them1 from one earth only4 ,what would this be to the ,divine1 who is infinite1 and to whom thousands1 yea1 myriads1 of earths1 all filled with inhabitants1 would be but a little thing and almost nothing6 #e4 ,besides1 the angelic heaven is so immense that it corresponds to each single part in man1 myriads of angels corresponding to each member1 and organ1 and viscus1 and to each affection of them2 and it has been given me to know that this heaven1 as to all its correspondences1 cannot possibly exist except from the inhabitants of very many earthsf4 ,footnote f3 ,heaven corresponds to the ,lord1 and man1 as to all things in general and particular1 corresponds to heaven2 and hence heaven1 before the ,lord1 is a ,man in a large effigy1 and may be called the ,grand or ,greatest ,man1 nos4 #biif1 #biih1 #cfbd-cfdi1 #cgda-cgdf1 #dfbe4 ,concerning the correspondence of man1 and of all things pertaining to him1 only delight4 ,these spirits are therefore permitted to wander about1 and even to pass beyond this solar system into others1 and procure knowledges4 ,they have stated that there are earths in immense numbers1 inhabited by human beings1 not only in this solar system1 but in the starry heaven beyond it4 ,these spirits are from the planet ,mercury4 #g4 ,with regard1 in general1 to the ,divine worship of the inhabitants of other earths3 all there1 who are not idolaters1 acknowledge the ,lord to be the ,one only ,god2 for they adore the ,divine1 not as an invisible ,divine1 but as visible1 for this reason1 besides others1 that when the ,divine appears to them it is in the ,human ,form1 as ,he formerly did to ,abraham and others on this ,earth g2 and all who adore the ,divine under the ,human ,form are accepted by the ,lord h4 ,they also say that no one can worship ,god rightly1 and still less be conjoined with ,him1 unless he comprehends ,him by some idea1 and that ,god cannot be comprehended except in the ,human ,form2 and that if ,he be not thus comprehended1 the interior sight1 which is that of the thought1 concerning ,god1 is dissipated1 as is the sight of the eye1 when looking into the universe with nothing to limit the view2 and that then the thought cannot but fall into nature1 and worship it instead of ,god4 ,footnote g3 ,the inhabitants of all the earths adore the ,divine ,being under the ,human ,form1 consequently the ,lord1 nos4 #heda-hedg1 #ajaei1 #ajgcf1 #ajgcg1 #ajgch4 ,and they rejoice when they hear that ,god actually became ,man1 no4 #icfa4 ,it is impossible to think of ,god except in the ,human ,form1 nos4 #hgje1 #icei1 #iigb4 ,man is able to worship and love that of which he has some idea1 but not that of which he has no idea1 nos4 #dgcc1 assumed the ,human on our ,earth1 they pondered for awhile1 and then said that it was done for the salvation of the human race4 ,,the ,,earth ,,or ,,planet ,,mercury1 ,,and ,,its ,,spirit ,,and ,,inhabitants #i4 ,that the entire heaven resembles one man1 who is therefore called the ,grand or ,greatest ,man 7,maximus ,homo71 and that all things in general and particular in man1 both his exteriors and interiors1 correspond to that man or to heaven1 is an arcanum as yet unknown in the world2 but that it is so has been shown in many passagesi4 ,but to constitute that ,grand ,man1 those who come from our ,earth into heaven are insufficient1 being comparatively few2 they must come from many other earths3 and it is provided by the ,lord that as soon as there is in any part a deficiency in the quality or quantity of the correspondence1 those who may supply it shall be immediately summoned from another earth1 in order that the proportion may be preserved1 and heaven by this means maintain its consistence4 ,footnote i3 ,see note f4 #aj4 ,it has also been disclosed to me from heaven1 what the spirits from the planet ,mercury have relation to in the ,grand ,man1 namely1 that they have relation to the memory1 but to the memory of things abstracted from earthly and merely material things4 ,as1 however1 it has been given me to speak with them1 and this for many weeks1 and to learn of what character they are1 and to examine how the inhabitants of that earth are circumstanced1 ,i wish to adduce the experiences themselves4 #aa4 ,some spirits came to me1 and it was stated from heaven that they were from the earth nearest to the sun1 which on our ,earth is called the planet ,mercury4 ,immediately on their coming they sifted out of my memory the things that ,i knew4 ,this1 spirits can do most skilfully1 for when they come to a man they see in his memory all the particulars it containsj4 ,while passing in review the various things1 and1 among others1 the cities and places where ,i had been1 ,i observed that they had no wish to know the temples1 palaces1 houses1 and streets1 but only the things ,i knew to have been done in them1 also the things that related to the government there1 and to the genius and manners of the inhabitants1 and other similar things2 for such matters are closely associated with the places in a man's memory1 so that when the places are called to mind1 these matters also suggest themselves4 ,i was surprised to find them of such a character1 and therefore inquired why they disregarded the magnificent objects of the places1 and only inquired into the facts and transactions connected with them4 ,they said that they had no delight in regarding material1 corporeal1 and terrestrial things1 but only things that are real4 ,hence it was proved that the spirits of that earth1 in the ,grand ,man1 have relation to the memory of things abstracted from material and terrestrial things4 ,footnote j3 ,spirits enter into all things of man's memory1 and do not insinuate anything from their own memory into the man's1 nos4 #bdhh1 #ehfc1 #faib1 #faic1 #faih1 #faii1 #fbad4 ,the angels enter into the affections and ends1 from which and for the sake of which a man thinks1 wills1 and acts in such or such a manner in preference to every other1 nos4 #acag1 #afde1 #ehdd4 #ab4 ,i was told that the life of the inhabitants of that earth is such1 namely1 that they do not concern themselves about terrestrial and corporeal things1 but only about the statutes1 laws1 and governments of the nations there2 and also about the things of heaven1 which are innumerable4 ,i was further informed1 that many of the men 7homines7 of that earth converse with spirits1 and that thence they have knowledges respecting spiritual things and the states of life after death1 and that thence also they have a contempt for corporeal and terrestrial things2 for those who know for a certainty1 and believe1 that there is a life after death1 are concerned about heavenly things1 as being eternal and blessed1 but not about worldly things1 except so far as the necessities of life require4 ,such being the character of its inhabitants1 such also is that of the spirits who are from itk4 ,footnote k3 ,the spirits who are with man are in possession of all things of his memory1 nos4 #ehec1 #eheg1 #ehei1 #ehfj4 #ac4 ,how eagerly they search for and imbibe the knowledges of such things as pertain to the memory raised above the sensual things of the body1 was made manifest to me from the circumstance that when they looked into the things which ,i knew respecting heavenly subjects1 they ran over them all1 and kept on stating the nature of each4 ,for when spirits come to a man1 they enter into the whole of his memory1 and call forth from it what suits themselves2 nay1 what ,i have often observed1 they read its contents as from a bookk4 ,these spirits did this more skilfully and quickly1 because they did not linger over such matters as are heavy and sluggish1 and confine and consequently impede the internal sight1 as is the nature of all terrestrial and corporeal things1 when regarded as ends1 that is1 when alone loved2 but they devoted their attention to things themselves2 for those matters to which terrestrial things do not cling1 carry the mind 7animus7 upwards1 and so introduce it into a wide field of view1 whereas merely material things drag the mind 7animus7 downwards1 and thus limit and imprison it4 ,their eagerness to acquire knowledges and enrich the memory was further evident from the following circumstances3 ,once1 when ,i was writing something concerning things to come1 and they were at a distance1 so that they could not look into those things from my memory2 because ,i was unwilling to read them in their presence1 they were very indignant1 and1 contrary to their usual demeanour1 they were disposed to inveigh against me1 saying that ,i was the worst of men1 and other like things2 and1 to show their resentment1 they caused a kind of contraction1 attended with pain1 on the right side of my head as far as the ear2 but such treatment did me no harm4 ,as1 however1 they had done evil1 they removed themselves to a still greater distance1 yet kept stopping1 being desirous of knowing what ,i had written4 ,such is their eager desire for knowledges4 #ad4 ,the spirits of ,mercury1 more than other spirits1 possess the knowledges of things1 both of those which are within this solar system1 and those which are beyond it in the starry heaven2 and whatever things they have once acquired they retain1 and recollect them as often as similar ones occur4 ,from this also it may manifestly appear that spirits have memory1 and that it is much more perfect than that of men2 and further1 that spirits retain what they hear1 see1 and apperceive1 and especially such matters as they are delighted with1 as these spirits are with the knowledges of things2 for things that are matters of delight and love flow in as it were spontaneously1 and remain2 other things do not enter1 but only touch the surface and pass by4 #ae4 ,when the spirits of ,mercury come to other societies1 they try to discover from them what they know1 and when they have ascertained this1 they depart4 ,there is also such a communication among spirits1 and especially among angels1 that when they are in a society1 if they are accepted and loved1 they communicate or share all they know4l ,footnote l3 ,in the heavens there is a communication of all goods1 inasmuch as heavenly love communicates all its possessions to others2 and hence the angels derive wisdom and happiness1 nos4 #edi1 #eej1 #acij1 #acia1 #acii1 #ajacj1 #ajgbc4 #af4 ,the spirits of ,mercury1 on account of their knowledges1 are more conceited than others2 wherefore they were told that1 although they know innumerable things1 there is yet an infinity of things which they do not know2 and that even were the knowledges with them to increase to eternity1 they would still be unable to attain to so much as an acquaintance with the generals of all things4 ,they were told that they were conceited and elated of disposition1 and that this character is unbecoming2 but they replied1 that it is not conceit1 but only a glorying on account of the capacity of their memory4 ,thus they have the art of excusing their faults4 #ag4 ,they are averse to verbal speech1 because it is material2 wherefore1 when ,i conversed with them without intermediate spirits1 ,i could only do so by a kind of active thought4 ,their memory1 because it is a memory of things1 not of purely material images1 brings nearer to the thought its proper objects2 for the thought1 which is above the imagination1 requires for its objects things abstracted from those of matter4 ,but notwithstanding that this is the case1 the spirits of ,mercury excel but little in the faculty of judgment4 ,they take no delight in the things which pertain to judgment and to conclusions from knowledges2 for their delight is in the bare knowledges4 #ah4 ,it was suggested to them1 whether they did not wish to make any use of their knowledges2 for it is not enough to be delighted with knowledges1 because knowledges have respect to uses1 and uses ought to be their ends2 that from knowledges alone no use results to themselves1 but to others with whom they are willing to share or communicate them2 and that it is not at all meet for a man who wants to become wise to stand still in knowledges alone1 inasmuch as these are only instrumental causes1 meant to be serviceable for the investigation of matters which ought to belong to the life4 ,but they replied that they were delighted with knowledges1 and that to them knowledges were uses4 #ai4 ,some of them1 also1 wish to appear1 not as men1 like the spirits of other earths1 but as crystalline globes4 ,their wanting to appear so1 although they do not1 arises from the circumstance that the knowledges of immaterial things are in the other life represented by crystals4 #bj4 ,the spirits of ,mercury differ entirely from those of our ,earth1 for the spirits of our ,earth concern themselves not so much about immaterial things as about worldly1 corporeal1 and terrestrial things1 which are material4 ,for this reason the spirits of ,mercury cannot be together with the spirits of our ,earth1 and therefore wherever they meet them they flee away1 for the spiritual spheres that are exhaled from both are almost contrary4 ,the spirits of ,mercury have a common saying1 that they do not want to look at the sheath1 but at things stripped of their sheath1 thus at interior things4 #ba4 ,there appeared a flame of considerable brightness1 which blazed cheerfully1 and this for about an hour4 ,that flame signified the advent of some spirits of ,mercury who1 for penetration1 thought1 and speech1 were prompter than those who preceded them4 ,when they were come1 they instantly ran over the things that were in my memory1 but1 owing to their promptness1 ,i was unable to apperceive what they observed4 ,immediately afterwards1 ,i heard them say that the matter was thus and thus4 ,with regard to the things which ,i had seen in the heavens and in the world of spirits1 they said that they knew them before4 ,i perceived that a multitude of spirits who were consociated with them1 was behind1 a little to the left1 in the plane of the occiput4 #bb4 ,at another time ,i saw a multitude of such spirits1 but at some little distance from me1 in front a little to the right1 and they spoke with me from thence1 but through intermediate spirits2 for their speech is as quick as thought1 which does not fall into human speech1 except by means of other spirits2 and what surprised me1 they spoke in a body1 and yet as promptly and rapidly as possible4 ,their speech1 being of many together1 was apperceived as undulatory1 and1 what was remarkable1 it glided towards my left eye1 although they were to the right4 ,the reason was1 that the left eye corresponds to the knowledges of things abstracted from material things1 thus to such as belong to intelligence1 while the right eye corresponds to such as belong to wisdomm4 ,with the same promptness with which they spoke1 they perceived the things that they heard1 and formed their judgment upon them1 saying of one thing that it was so1 and of another that it was not so1 their judgment being as it were instantaneous4 ,footnote m3 ,the eye corresponds to the understanding1 because the understanding is the internal sight1 and the sight of things immaterial1 nos4 #bgja1 #ddaj1 #debf1 #ijea1 #ajefi4 ,the sight of the left eye corresponds to truths1 consequently to intelligence2 and the sight of the right eye corresponds to the goods of truth1 consequently to wisdom1 no4 #ddaj4 #bc4 ,there was a spirit from another earth1 who was well qualified to converse with them1 being a prompt and rapid speaker1 but who affected elegance in his discourse4 ,they instantly formed their judgment concerning whatever he spoke1 saying of one thing that it was too elegantly1 of another that it was too learnedly expressed2 so that the only thing they attended to was1 whether they heard from him anything which was not known to them before1 rejecting thereby such things as obscured the subject1 which are chiefly affectations of elegance in expression and of erudition2 for these hide the things themselves and in their place substitute expressions1 which are the material forms of things2 on these the speaker keeps his mind 7animus7 fixed1 and wants to draw attention to his expressions rather than their meaning1 by which the ears of his auditors are more affected than their minds 7mens74 #bd4 ,the spirits of the earth ,mercury do not tarry in one place1 or among assemblies of the spirits of one system1 but wander through the universe4 ,the reason is that they have reference to the memory of things1 which requires to be continually enriched2 therefore it is granted them to wander about1 and everywhere acquire knowledges4 ,if1 while travelling in this manner1 they meet with spirits who love material1 that is1 corporeal and terrestrial things1 they shun them1 and betake themselves to where they do not hear such things4 ,from this it may appear that their mind 7animus7 is elevated above sensual things1 and thus that they are in interior light 7lumen74 ,this it was also given me actually to perceive when they were near me and were speaking with me4 ,i observed then that ,i was withdrawn from sensual things to such a degree1 that the light 7lumen7 of my eyes began to grow dull and dim4 #be4 ,the spirits of that earth go about by companies and phalanxes1 and when assembled together they form as it were a globe4 ,they are joined together in this manner by the ,lord in order that they may act as a one1 and that the knowledges of each may be communicated to all1 and the knowledges of all to each1 as is the case in heavenl4 ,that they wander through the universe in quest of the knowledges of things1 was made manifest to me also from this fact1 that once1 when they appeared very remote from me1 they spoke with me from thence1 and said that they were then gathered together1 and were going beyond the sphere of this system into the starry heaven1 where they knew there were such as had no concern about terrestrial and corporeal things1 but about things elevated above them1 with whom they desired to be4 ,it was stated that they themselves do not know whither they are going1 but that under the ,divine auspices they are conveyed to where they may be instructed concerning such things as they had previously been unacquainted with1 and which are in agreement with the knowledges they already possess4 ,it was also stated that they do not know how they meet with the companions with whom they are conjoined1 and that this also is effected under the ,divine auspices4 #bf4 ,as they journey through the universe in this manner1 and are thus enabled to know more than others about the systems and earths beyond the sphere of our solar system1 ,i have spoken with them on this subject also4 ,they said that in the universe there are very many earths1 with human beings upon them2 and that they wonder at its being supposed by some1 whom they called men of little judgment1 that the heaven of the ,omnipotent ,god consists only of the spirits and angels who come from one earth1 when these are so few that1 relatively to the ,omnipotence of ,god1 they are scarcely anything1 and this would be the case even if there were myriads of systems with myriads of earths4 ,they said1 moreover1 that they knew of the existence of earths in the universe exceeding in number some hundreds of thousands2 and yet what is this to the ,divine1 who is ,infinite6 #bg4 ,the spirits of ,mercury1 when they were with me while ,i was writing and explaining the ,word as to its internal sense1 and who perceived what ,i was writing1 said that the things which ,i wrote were very gross1 and that almost all the expressions appeared as material4 ,but it was given to reply1 that the men of our ,earth nevertheless look upon the things that have been written1 as subtle and elevated1 and that many things they do not understand4 ,i added1 that very many on this ,earth do not know that it is the internal man that acts on the external1 and causes it to live1 and that from the fallacies of the senses they persuade themselves that the body has a life of its own1 and that in consequence the evil and unbelieving are in doubt as to a life after death4 ,also1 that that in man which is to live after death they do not call the spirit but the soul2 and that they dispute about what the soul is and where its abode is1 and believe that the material body1 although dispersed to all the winds1 must be again conjoined to it1 in order that man may live as a man2 besides many other things of the same kind4 ,when the spirits of ,mercury heard these things1 they asked whether such men could become angels4 ,to this it was given to answer that those who have lived in the good of faith and charity become angels1 and that then they are no longer in external and material things1 but in internal and spiritual things2 and that when they come into this state1 they are in a light superior to that in which the spirits from ,mercury are4 ,in order that they might know that this was so1 an angel who had come into heaven from our ,earth1 and who had been such while he lived in the world1 was allowed to speak with them2 which circumstance will be detailed below at no4 #cg4 #bh4 ,afterwards there was sent me by the spirits of ,mercury a long paper of an irregular shape1 consisting of several papers stuck together1 which appeared as if printed with types such as are used on this ,earth4 ,i asked whether they had such among them2 but they said they had not1 but that they knew that there were such printed papers on our ,earth4 ,they were not willing to say more2 but ,i perceived that they thought that the knowledges on our ,earth were on papers1 and not so much within the man himself1 thus derisively insinuating that the papers1 so to speak1 knew more than the man4 ,but they were instructed as to the real state of the case4 ,after some time they returned1 and sent me another paper1 which also appeared printed with types like unto the former one2 not1 however1 like it1 stuck together and untidy1 but symmetrically shaped and neat3 they said they had been further informed that on this ,earth there were such papers1 and books made of them4 #bi4 ,from the facts that have now been stated1 it clearly appears1 that spirits retain in the memory the things that they see and hear in the other life1 and that they are equally capable of being instructed as when they were men in the world1 consequently1 of being instructed in those things that are of faith1 and thereby of being perfected4 ,the more interior spirits and angels are1 the more promptly and fully do they imbibe1 and the more perfectly do they retain what they hear1 and as this capacity remains for ever1 it is evident that wisdom is continually growing with them4 ,with the spirits of ,mercury1 the science of things is continually growing1 yet not therefore wisdom1 because they love knowledges1 which are means1 but not uses1 which are ends4 #cj4 ,furthermore1 the character of the genius of the spirits who are from the planet ,mercury may still further appear from the following facts4 ,it must be known that all spirits and angels without exception were once men1 for the human race is the seminary of heaven2 and that spirits are altogether such as to their affections and inclinations as they had been when they lived as men in the world1 for every one's life follows himn4 ,this being the case1 the genius of the men of every earth may be known from the genius of the spirits who are from it4 ,footnote n3 ,every one's life remains with him and follows him after death1 nos4 #dbbg1 #gddj4 ,the externals of life are kept closed after death1 and the internals of life are opened1 nos4 #dcad1 #eabh1 #fdie4 ,all things in general and particular of thought are then made manifest1 nos4 #dfcc1 #eabh4 #ca4 ,since the spirits of ,mercury in the ,grand ,man have relation to the memory of things abstracted from material things1 therefore when any one speaks to them of terrestrial1 corporeal1 and merely worldly things1 they are absolutely unwilling to hear2 and if they are forced to hear of those things1 they transmute them into others1 and for the most part into contrary things1 so as to avoid them4 #cb4 ,in order that ,i might know for certain that such was their genius1 it was allowed to represent to them meadows1 fallow-lands1 gardens1 woods1 and streams4 ,to represent such things is to exhibit before another in imagination those things which1 in the other life1 appear to the life4 ,but they instantly transmuted them2 they darkened the meadows and fallow-lands1 and by representations filled them with snakes2 the streams they turned black1 so that the water no longer appeared limpid4 ,when ,i asked why they did so1 they said they did not want to think of such things1 but of realities1 which are the knowledges of things abstracted from terrestrial things1 especially of such as exist in the heavens4 #cc4 ,i afterwards represented to them birds both large and small1 such as exist on our ,earth2 for in the other life such things can be represented to the life4 ,on seeing those birds represented1 they at first wanted to change them1 but they afterwards were delighted with them1 and became quiet2 the reason was1 that birds signify the knowledges of things1 and the perception of this fact then flowed ino2 they therefore abstained from transmuting them1 and so from turning away the ideas of their memory4 ,afterwards it was permitted me to represent before them a very pleasant garden full of lamps and lights2 they then paused and their attention was fixed1 because lamps with lights signify truths 7veritates7 which shine from goodp4 ,from this it was evident that they could be detained in the consideration of material things1 provided only that the signification of those things in the spiritual sense were insinuated at the same time2 for the things which belong to the spiritual sense are not abstracted from material things to the same extent1 inasmuch as they are representative of these4 ,footnote o3 ,birds signify rational things1 intellectual things1 thoughts1 were perceived by them as terrestrial things2 the reason was1 that they did not understand what innocence is1 which lambs signify2 this was apperceived from the circumstance that1 on my saying that lambs1 when represented in heaven1 signify innocenceq1 they said that they did not know what innocence was1 but only knew it by name3 the reason is1 that they are affected with knowledges only1 but not with uses1 which are the ends of knowledges1 consequently they are unable to know1 from internal perception1 what innocence is4 ,footnote q3 ,lambs in heaven1 and in the ,word1 signify innocence1 nos4 #ciid1 #ghdj1 #ajacb4 #ce4 ,some of the spirits of the earth ,mercury came to me1 being sent by others1 in order that they might hear what was going on near me4 ,these were told by one of the spirits of our ,earth1 to tell their friends not to speak anything but what was true1 and not1 as they were wont1 to present opposite things to their questioners2 for that if any of the spirits of our ,earth were to do so1 he would be punished4 ,but immediately the company from which those spirits had been sent forth1 and which was at a distance1 made answer1 that if they must be punished on that account1 they must all be punished1 inasmuch as1 from continual practice1 they could not do otherwise4 ,they said that when they speak with the men of their own earth1 they also do likewise1 not1 however1 with any intention to deceive1 but to inspire the desire of knowing2 for when they present opposite things1 and conceal things in a certain manner1 the desire of knowing is excited1 and thus from the zeal of exploring those things1 the memory is perfected4 ,i also1 on another occasion1 spoke with them on the same subject1 and1 as ,i knew that they spoke with the men of their earth1 ,i asked in what manner they instructed their inhabitants4 ,they said that they do not instruct them fully as to how a matter is1 but keep insinuating some apperception of it1 in order that from this the desire of exploring and of acquiring knowledge may be nourished and grow2 for if they were to answer all their questions1 the desire would perish4 ,they added1 that they suggest opposites for this reason also1 that the truth 7veritas7 may afterwards appear the better2 for all truth appears from relation to its opposites4 #cf4 ,it is their custom not to tell another what they know1 but still they want to learn from all others what is known to them4 ,with their own society1 however1 they communicate everything1 insomuch that what one knows all know1 and what all know each one in the society knowsl4 #cg4 ,inasmuch as the spirits of ,mercury abound in knowledges1 they are in a certain kind of conceit2 hence they imagine that they know so much that it is almost impossible to know more4 ,but it was told them by the spirits of our ,earth1 that they do not know much but little1 and that the things which they do not know are comparatively infinite2 and that the things which they do not know1 are1 relatively to those they do know1 as the waters of the largest ocean to those of a very small fountain2 and further1 that the first step towards wisdom consists in knowing1 acknowledging1 and perceiving that what one knows1 is1 compared with what one does not know1 so little as hardly to be anything4 ,in order that they might know that it is so1 it was granted that a certain angelic spirit should speak with them1 and tell them generally what they knew and what they did not know1 and that there were infinite things which they did not know1 and that eternity would not suffice for their acquiring even a general knowledge of things4 ,he spoke by means of angelic ideas much more readily than they did1 and as he disclosed to them what they knew and what they did not know1 they were struck with amazement4 ,afterwards ,i saw another angel speaking with them1 who appeared at some height towards the right2 he was from our ,earth4 ,he recounted very many things which they did not know2 and afterwards he spoke with them by means of changes of state1 which they said they did not understand4 ,he then told them that every change of state1 and also every smallest part of such change1 contains infinite things4 ,when they heard this1 as they had been conceited on account of their knowledges1 they began to humble themselves4 ,their humiliation was represented by the sinking downwards of the compact body 7volumen7 which they formed 7for that company appeared at the time as a compact body1 in front towards the left1 at a distance1 in the plane of the region below the navel72 but the compact body appeared as it were hollowed in the middle1 and raised at the sides2 an alternating motion was also observed therein4 ,they were also told what that signified1 that is1 what they thought in their humiliation1 and that those who appeared elevated at the sides were not as yet in any humiliation2 and ,i saw that the compact body was separated1 and that those who were not in humiliation were sent back towards their earth1 the rest remaining4 #ch4 ,there once came some spirits of ,mercury to a certain spirit from our ,earth1 who1 during his life in the world1 had been most celebrated for his learning1--he was ,christian ,wolf--desiring to receive information from him on various subjects4 ,but when they perceived that what he said was not elevated above the sensual things of the natural man1 because in speaking he thought of honour1 and wanted1 as in the world 7for in the other life every one is like his former self71 to connect various things into series1 and from these again and continually to deduce others1 and so form several chains of such1 which they did not see or acknowledge to be true1 and which therefore they declared to be chains which neither cohered in themselves nor with the conclusions1 and called them the obscurity of authority1 they ceased to question him1 inquiring only what this was called and what that4 ,and because he answered these questions also by material ideas1 and not by any that were spiritual1 they departed from him4 ,for in the other life every one speaks spiritually1 or by spiritual ideas1 so far as in the world he had believed in ,god2 and materially1 so far as he had not believed4 ,as an opportunity here offers1 ,i may relate how the case is1 in the other life1 with the learned who acquire intelligence by their own meditation kindled by the love of knowing truths for the sake of truths1 thus for the sake of uses apart from worldly considerations2 and how the case is with those who acquire intelligence from others without any meditation of their own1 as is the practice of those who desire to know truths merely for the purpose of acquiring a reputation for learning1 and of thereby attaining honour or gain in the world1 and consequently not for the sake of uses apart from worldly considerations4 ,i may here relate a certain experience concerning men of this character4 ,there was apperceived a certain sound penetrating from beneath near the left side as far as the left ear3 ,i observed that there were spirits who were attempting to force their way there1 but ,i could not ascertain of what character they were4 ,when they had forced their way1 however1 they spoke with me1 saying that they were logicians and metaphysicians1 and that they had immersed their thoughts in such sciences without any other end than that of acquiring a reputation for learning1 and thus of attaining to honours and wealth3 they lamented that they now led a miserable life1 because they had studied these sciences for no other end1 and thus had not cultivated their ,rational by means of them4 ,their speech was slow and muffled4 ,in the meantime there were two conversing above my head1 and when ,i asked who they were1 ,i was told that one of them was of the highest distinction in the learned world1 and it was given me to believe that he was ,aristotle4 ,who the other was1 was not stated4 ,he was then let into the state in which he had been when he lived in the world1 for every one can easily be let into the state of life which he had had in the world1 since every state of his life remains with him4 ,i was surprised to find that he applied himself to the right ear1 and he spoke there1 hoarsely1 indeed1 but still sensibly4 ,from the purport of what he said ,i apperceived that he was of quite a different genius from those ,schoolmen who first arose1 namely1 that he hatched what he wrote from his own thought1 and from the same source produced his philosophical system1 so that the terms which he invented1 and applied to subjects of thought1 were forms of expression by which he described interior things2 also that he was excited to such pursuits by a delight of the affection1 and by a desire of knowing the things that belonged to the thought and the understanding2 and that he followed obediently whatever his spirit had dictated4 ,this was the reason he applied himself to the right ear1 differently from his followers1 who are called ,schoolmen1 and who do not proceed from thought to terms1 but from terms to thoughts1 thus by a contrary way2 and many of them do not even proceed to thoughts1 but stick fast entirely in terms1 their application of which1 when they make any1 being to confirm whatever they want to1 and to invest falsities with an appearance of truth1 according to their eagerness to persuade4 ,consequently for them philosophy is rather a means of becoming foolish than a means of becoming wise2 and therefore they have darkness instead of light4 ,afterwards1 ,i conversed with him on analytical science1 saying that a little child1 in half an hour1 speaks more philosophically1 analytically1 and logically1 than he could describe in a volume1 because all things of human thought and consequently of human speech are analytical1 and the laws thereof are from the spiritual world2 and that he who wants to think artificially from terms is not unlike a dancer who wants to learn to dance from a knowledge of the motory fibres and muscles2 if he were to keep his mind 7animus7 fixed on that knowledge whilst dancing1 he would hardly be able to move a foot1 and yet1 without that knowledge1 he sets in action all the motory fibres that are scattered throughout the whole of his body1 and1 in due measure1 the lungs1 diaphragm1 sides1 arms1 neck1 and all the other parts1 to describe all which volumes would not suffice2 and that the case is just like this with those who want to think from terms4 ,he approved of these observations1 and said1 that if one learns to think in that way one proceeds in inverted order3 adding1 that if any one wants to be foolish1 he has only to proceed in that way2 and that one should constantly think of use1 and from what is interior4 ,he next showed me what idea he had had of the ,supreme ,deity4 ,he had represented ,him to himself as having a human face1 and encompassed about the head with a radiant circle2 but he now knew that the ,lord is ,himself that ,man1 and that the radiant circle is the ,divine proceeding from ,him1 which inflows not only into heaven but also into the universe1 disposing and ruling both4 ,he added1 that ,he who disposes and rules heaven1 disposes and rules the universe also1 because the one cannot be separated from the other4 ,he also said1 that he believed in only one ,god1 whose attributes and qualities men distinguished by names as numerous as the gods they worshipped4 ,a woman appeared to me who stretched out her hand1 desiring to stroke his cheek4 ,when ,i expressed my surprise at this1 he said1 that while he was in the world such a woman had often appeared to him1 and as it were stroked his cheek1 and that her hand was beautiful4 ,the angelic spirits said that such women sometimes appeared to the ancients1 and that they called them ,pallases2 and that the one who appeared to him was from spirits who1 when they lived as men in the ancient times1 were delighted with ideas and indulged in thoughts1 but without philosophy2 and as such spirits were with him1 and were delighted with him because he thought from what is interior1 they representatively exhibited such a woman to his view4 ,lastly1 he told me what idea he had had concerning the soul or spirit of man1 which he called ,pneuma1 namely1 that it was an invisible vital principle1 like something of the ether4 ,he said that he knew his spirit would live after death1 since it was his interior essence1 which cannot die1 because it can think2 and moreover that he could not think clearly concerning it1 but only obscurely1 because he had not possessed any knowledge on the subject except from himself1 with a little also from the ,ancients4 ,aristotle1 it may be remarked1 is among sane spirits in the other life1 but many of his followers are among the foolish4 #ci4 ,i once saw that some spirits of our ,earth were with some spirits of ,mercury1 and ,i heard them conversing with one another2 and on this occasion the spirits of our ,earth asked them1 among other things1 in whom they believed4 ,they replied that they believed in ,god4 ,but when they inquired further concerning the ,god in whom they believed1 they would not say1 since it is their custom not to give direct answers to questions4 ,then the spirits from the earth ,mercury1 in their turn1 asked the spirits from our ,earth in whom they believed4 ,they said that they believed in the ,lord ,god4 ,the spirits of ,mercury then said they perceived that they believed in no ,god1 and that they had contracted a habit of professing belief with the mouth when yet they do not believe4 7,the spirits of ,mercury have an exquisite perception1 in consequence of their continually exploring1 by means of perception1 what others know47 ,the spirits of our ,earth were of the number of those who in the world had made profession of faith according to the doctrine of the church1 but still had not lived the life of faith2 and those who do not live the life of faith1 in the other life have no faith1 because it is not in the manr4 ,on hearing this they were silent1 because1 by an apperception then given them1 they acknowledged that the case was so4 ,footnote r3 ,they who make profession of faith from doctrine1 and do not live the life of faith1 have no faith1 nos4 #chfe1 #ggff1 #gggh1 #ggij1 #giej1 #hjid4 ,and their interiors are contrary to the truths of faith1 although in the world they do not know this1 nos4 #ggij1 #giej4 #dj4 ,certain spirits knew from heaven that a promise had once been made to the spirits of the earth ,mercury1 that they should see the ,lord2 they were1 therefore1 asked by the spirits about me whether they recollected that promise4 ,they said that they did recollect it2 but that they did not know whether the promise had been made in such a manner as to preclude all doubt respecting it4 ,while they were thus talking together1 the ,sun of heaven appeared to them4 7,the ,sun of heaven1 which is the ,lord1 is seen only by those who are in the inmost or third heaven2 others see the light which proceeds from it47 ,on seeing the ,sun1 they said that this was not the ,lord ,god1 because they saw no face4 ,meanwhile the spirits were conversing with each other1 but ,i did not hear what they said4 ,suddenly1 however1 the ,sun again appeared1 and in the midst of it the ,lord1 encompassed with a solar circle3 at this sight the spirits of ,mercury humbled themselves profoundly1 and bowed down4 ,at that time also1 the ,lord appeared out of that ,sun to certain spirits of our ,earth1 who1 when they were men1 had seen ,him in the world2 and they1 one after another1 and thus many in succession1 confessed that it was the ,lord ,himself2 and they made this confession before the whole assembly4 ,at the same time also the ,lord appeared out of the ,sun to the spirits of the planet ,jupiter1 who declared with a clear voice1 that it was ,he ,himself whom they had seen on their earth when the ,god of the universe appeared to thems4 ,footnote s3 ,the ,lord is the ,sun of heaven1 from which proceeds all the light there1 nos4 that the sun of the world does not appear at all to any spirit1 nor does anything of the light from it4 ,the light of this sun is1 to spirits and angels1 like thick darkness4 ,this sun remains in the perception with spirits only from their having seen it when they were in the world1 and it is exhibited to them in idea as an exceedingly dark something1 and situated behind at a considerable distance1 at a little height above the plane of the head4 ,the planets which are within the system of this sun appear according to a fixed situation in respect to the sun3 ,mercury appears behind1 a little towards the right2 the planet ,venus to the left1 a little backwards2 the planet ,mars to the left in front2 the planet ,jupiter likewise to the left in front1 but at a greater distance2 the planet ,saturn directly in front1 at a considerable distance2 the ,moon to the left1 at a moderate height3 the satellites also appear to the left relatively to their own planets4 ,such is the situation of these planets in the ideas of spirits and angels4 ,spirits also appear near their own planet1 but apart from it4 ,with regard to the spirits of ,mercury in particular1 they do not appear in any particular quarter1 or at any particular distance1 but they appear sometimes in front1 sometimes to the left1 sometimes a little to the back2 the reason is1 that they are allowed to wander through the universe for the purpose of procuring knowledges4 #dc4 ,some spirits of ,mercury once appeared to the left in a globe1 and afterwards in a compact body 7volumen7 extending itself lengthwise4 ,i wondered whither they were bent1 whether to this or to some other earth1 and ,i soon observed that they turned towards the right1 and1 rolling along1 approached the earth or planet ,venus towards the quarter in front4 ,but when they reached it1 they said that they would not remain there1 because the inhabitants were evil2 wherefore they turned round to the back part of that earth1 and then said they would remain there1 because the inhabitants of that part were good4 ,while this was taking place ,i was sensible of a remarkable change in the brain1 and of a powerful operation from it4 ,from this it was given me to conclude that the spirits of ,venus who are from that part of the planet1 were in concord with the spirits of ,mercury1 and that they had relation to the memory of material things which is in concord with the memory of immaterial things1 to which the spirits of ,mercury have relation2 hence a more powerful operation was felt from them when they were there4 #dd4 ,i was desirous of knowing what kind of face and body the men 7homines7 on the earth ,mercury have1 and whether they are like the men 7homines7 on our ,earth4 ,there was then exhibited before my eyes a woman exactly resembling those who are on that earth4 ,her face was beautiful1 but smaller than that of the women of our ,earth2 she was also more slender in body1 but of equal height3 her head was covered with some linen stuff1 arranged without art but still in a becoming manner4 ,a man 7vir7 also was exhibited4 ,he1 too1 was more slender in body than the men 7viri7 of our ,earth2 he was clothed in a garment of dark blue fitting closely to his body1 without folds or protuberances anywhere4 ,such1 ,i was told1 were the personal form and clothing of the men 7homines7 of that earth4 ,afterwards there were exhibited some kinds of their oxen and cows1 which did not1 indeed1 differ much from those on our ,earth1 except that they were smaller1 and approximated in some measure to the stag and hind species4 #de4 ,they were also questioned about the sun of the system1 how it appears from their earth4 ,they said that it appeared large1 and larger there than from other earths2 they said that they knew this from the ideas of other spirits respecting the sun4 ,they said further that they enjoyed a middle temperature1 neither too hot nor too cold4 ,it was then given me to tell them1 that it has been so provided for them by the ,lord1 in order that they might not be exposed to excessive heat from the circumstance of their earth being in greater proximity to the sun than the other earths1 since heat does not arise from nearness to the sun1 but from the height and density of the aerial atmosphere1 as is evident from the cold on high mountains even in hot climates2 also1 that heat is varied according to the direct or oblique incidence of the sun's rays1 as is evident from the seasons of winter and summer in every region4 ,these are the particulars which it has been given me to know respecting the spirits and inhabitants of the earth ,mercury4 ,,the ,,earth ,,or ,,planet ,,jupiter1 ,,and ,,its ,,spirits ,,and ,,inhabitants4 #df4 ,it has been given me to have longer intercourse with the spirits and angels of the planet ,jupiter than with the spirits and angels from the other planets2 and ,i can therefore relate more particulars respecting their state of life and respecting that of the inhabitants of that planet4 ,that those spirits were from that planet1 was evident from many circumstances1 and was also declared from heaven4 #dg4 ,the earth or planet ,jupiter itself does not indeed appear to spirits and angels3 for in the spiritual world no earth is ever visible to any one1 but only the spirits and angels who are from it4 ,those who are from the planet ,jupiter appear in front to the left1 at some little distance1 and this constantly 7see above1 no4 #db73 there also the planet is4 ,the spirits of every earth are near their own earth1 because they are from its inhabitants 7for every man after death becomes a spirit71 and because they are thus of a similar genius1 and can be with the inhabitants and be of service to them4 #dh4 ,they related that in the region of their earth where they had lived when in the world1 the multitude of human beings was as great as the earth could support2 that it was fertile1 and abounded in all things2 that the inhabitants desired no more than sufficed for the necessities of life1 and that what was not necessary they did not regard as useful2 and that therefore the multitude of human beings was so great4 ,they said that their principal care was the education of their children1 and that they loved them most tenderly4 #di4 ,they further related that on their earth they are distinguished into clans1 families1 and households1 and that all live together with their own1 separate from the others1 and that therefore their habitual intercourse is confined to their kindred3 also that no one ever desires another's goods2 nor does it ever enter the mind 7animus7 of any one to covet any of the goods of another1 much less to obtain them by any artifice1 and still less to attack and plunder them2 this they consider a crime contrary to human nature1 and horrible4 ,when ,i wanted to tell them that on this ,earth there were wars1 depredations1 and murders1 they turned away1 and refused to hear4 ,it has been told me by the angels that the ,most ,ancient inhabitants of our ,earth dwelt in the same manner1 that is to say1 distinguished into clans1 families1 and households1 and that all in those times were content with their own goods2 and that it was an entirely unknown thing for one to enrich himself with the goods of others1 or to assume dominion from the love of self2 and that on this account the ,ancient1 and especially the ,most ,ancient times1 were more acceptable to the ,lord than those which have succeeded them2 and that1 as their state was such1 innocence then reigned1 and1 together with innocence1 wisdom2 that every one then did what was good for the sake of good1 and what was just for the sake of justice2 that they did not know what it was to do what was good and just with a view to their own honour1 or for the sake of gain2 and that in those times they spoke nothing but what was true1 and this not so much from truth as from good1 that is1 not from the ,intellectual separate from the ,voluntary1 but from the ,voluntary conjoined with the ,intellectual4 ,such were the ,ancient times4 ,angels then could therefore have habitual intercourse with men1 and carry their minds1 almost separated from corporeal things1 into heaven1 and could even lead them about there1 and show them the magnificent and goodly things there1 and also communicate to them their own happinesses and delights4 ,these times were also known to ancient writers1 who called them the ,golden1 and likewise the ,saturnian times4 ,the reason why these times were such was1 as has been stated1 that men then lived distinguished into clans1 clans into families1 and families into households1 and every household dwelt by itself2 and that it then never entered into any one's mind 7mens7 to seize upon another's inheritance1 and thus acquire for himself opulence and dominion3 the love of self and the love of the world were then far away2 every one rejoiced in his own1 and not less in another's good4 ,but in the course of time this scene was changed and totally reversed1 when the lust of exercising dominion and of possessing many things invaded the mind 7animus74 ,then the human race1 for the sake of self-defence1 gathered themselves into kingdoms and empires2 and because the laws of charity and conscience1 which had been inscribed upon the heart1 ceased to operate1 it became necessary1 in order to restrain deeds of violence1 to enact external laws1 of which the rewards were honours and gain1 and the punishments were the deprivation thereof4 ,when the state was thus changed1 heaven itself became removed from man1 and this more and more even to the present ages1 when the very existence of heaven and hell is unknown1 yea1 is even denied by some4 ,these statements have been made in order to show clearly by the parallel1 what is the state of those who are on the earth ,jupiter1 and whence they have their goodness of disposition and also their wisdom1 of which more will be said in the following pages4 #ej4 ,by long-continued intercourse with the spirits of the earth ,jupiter1 it became manifest to me that they were better disposed than the spirits of many other earths4 ,their approach when they came to me1 their stay with me1 and their influx at the time1 were so gentle and sweet as to be inexpressible4 ,in the other life the quality of every spirit manifests itself by an influx1 which is the communication of his affection4 ,goodness of disposition manifests itself by gentleness and sweetness2 by gentleness1 because it is afraid to hurt1 and by sweetness1 because it loves to do good4 ,i could distinguish very clearly between the gentleness and sweetness of the influx proceeding from the good spirits of our ,earth1 and the gentleness and sweetness of the influx from the spirits of ,jupiter4 ,they said that when any slight disagreement arises among them1 there appears as it were a thin dazzling white ray of light1 like that of ordinary lightning or like the little swath which encompasses glittering and wandering stars2 but the disagreement among them is soon adjusted4 ,glittering stars1 which are at the same time wandering signify what is false2 but glittering and fixed stars signify what is true2 thus the former signify disagreement4u ,footnote u3 ,stars in the ,word signify the knowledges of good and truth1 consequently truths1 nos4 #bdie1 #bhdi1 #dfig4 ,and in the other life truths are represented by fixed stars1 but falsities by wandering stars1 no4 #aabh4 #ea4 ,i could distinguish the presence of the spirits of ,jupiter1 not only by the gentleness and sweetness of their approach and influx1 but also by this circumstance1 that their influx was for the most part into the face1 which they rendered cheerful and smiling1 and this continually as long as they were present4 ,they said that they in the same way dispose the faces of the inhabitants of their earth1 when they come to them1 being desirous thus to inspire them with tranquillity and delightsomeness of heart4 ,the tranquillity and delightsomeness with which they inspired me1 sensibly filled my breast and heart3 at the same time the longings and anxieties about the future1 which cause disquiet and wretchedness1 and agitate the mind with various passions1 were removed4 ,from this it could be made apparent to me what was the character of the life of the inhabitants of the earth ,jupiter2 for the inborn disposition of the inhabitants is known from the spirits1 since every one carries his own life with him from the world1 and lives it when he becomes a spirit4 ,it was observed that they had a state of still more interior blessedness or happiness4 ,this was observed by its being perceived that their interiors were not closed1 but open to heaven2 for the more open to heaven the interiors are1 the more capable are they of receiving ,divine good1 and with it blessedness and interior happiness4 ,it is quite otherwise with those who do not live in the order of heaven2 with them the interiors are closed1 and the exteriors are open to the world4 #eb4 ,it was also shown me what kind of faces the inhabitants of the earth ,jupiter have2 not that ,i saw the inhabitants themselves but spirits with faces similar to those they had when they dwelt on their earth4 ,but before this was shown me1 one of their angels appeared behind a bright white cloud1 and gave permission4 ,two faces were then shown4 ,they were like the faces of the men of our ,earth1 fair and beautiful2 sincerity and modesty shone forth from them4 ,when the spirits of ,jupiter were with me1 the faces of the men of our ,earth appeared smaller than usual3 this was owing to the circumstance that there inflowed from those spirits the idea they had that their own faces were larger4 ,for when they live as men on their earth they believe that after their decease their faces will be larger1 and round in form2 and this idea1 being impressed upon them1 remains2 and when they become spirits1 they appear to themselves to have larger faces4 ,the reason why they believe that their faces will be larger is that they say the face is not the body1 because they see1 hear1 speak1 and manifest their thoughts by means of it1 and because the mind thus shines through it2 hence they have an idea of the face as the mind in form4 ,and as they know that they will become wiser after their life in the world1 they believe that the form of the mind1 that is1 the face1 will become larger4 ,they also believe that after their decease they shall perceive a fire which will communicate warmth to their faces4 ,this belief arises from a knowledge possessed by the wiser amongst them that fire1 in the spiritual sense1 signifies love1 that love is the fire of life1 and that from that fire the angels have lifex4 ,such of them as have lived in heavenly love also have their wish gratified1 and feel their face grow warm1 and then the interiors of their minds are kindled with love4 ,for this reason the inhabitants of that earth frequently wash and clean their face1 and also carefully protect it from the sun's heat4 ,they have a covering made of the inner or outer bark of a tree1 which is of a bluish colour1 and with this they encircle the head1 and thus protect the face4 ,with respect to the faces of the men of our ,earth1 which they saw through my eyesy1 they said that they were not beautiful1 and that such beauty as they had consisted in the outward skin1 but not in the fibres from within4 ,they were surprised to see that the faces of some were covered with warts and pustules1 or otherwise disfigured1 and said that no such faces are ever to be seen among them4 ,yet there were some faces that pleased them1 such1 namely1 as were cheerful and smiling1 and such as were slightly prominent about the lips4 ,footnote x3 ,fire in the ,word signifies love in both senses1 nos4 #icd1 #dijf1 #ebae4 ,sacred and heavenly fire is ,divine love and every affection which is of that love1 nos4 #icd1 #fcad1 #fhcb4 ,infernal fire is the love of self and of the world1 and every concupiscence belonging to those loves1 nos4 #icd1 #ahfa1 #ejga1 #fcad1 #fhcb1 #gege1 #ajgdg4 ,love is the fire of life1 and life itself is actually derived from that fire1 nos4 #dijf1 #ejga1 #fhcb4 ,footnote y3 ,spirits and angels do not see the things that are in this solar world but they saw through my eyes1 no4 #ahha4 #ec4 ,the reason they were pleased with the faces that were prominent about the lips was1 that their speech is effected mostly by means of the face1 especially by the part about the lips1 and also because they never counterfeit1 that is1 never speak otherwise than they think1 so that they do not constrain their face1 but give it free play4 ,it is otherwise with those who from childhood have learned to counterfeit3 with these the face is1 in consequence1 constrained from within1 lest anything of the thought should shine forth from it2 nor has it free play from without1 but is kept in readiness to relax or constrain itself1 as cunning may dictate4 ,the truth 7veritas7 of this may appear from an examination of the fibres of the lips and surrounding parts1 for the series of the fibres there are manifold1 complicated1 and interwoven1 having been created1 not only for mastication and verbal speech1 but also for expressing the ideas of the mind 7animus74 #ed4 ,it was also shown me how the thoughts are expressed by means of the face4 ,the affections which belong to the love are manifested by means of the countenance and its changes1 and the thoughts therein by variations as to the forms of the interiors there3 it is impossible to describe them further4 ,the inhabitants of the earth ,jupiter have also verbal speech1 but not so loud as with us4 ,the one speech aids the other1 and life is insinuated into the verbal speech by the speech of the face4 ,i have been informed by the angels that the very first speech in every earth was speech by the face1 and from two origins there1 the lips and the eyes4 ,the reason this kind of speech was the first is1 that the face was formed to effigy forth whatever a man thinks and wills2 in consequence of which the face is also called the effigy and index of the mind 7animus74 ,another reason is1 that in the ,most ,ancient or primeval times sincerity prevailed1 and no one cherished or wanted to cherish a thought which he was not willing should shine forth out of his face4 ,in this way1 also1 the affections of the mind 7animus71 and the thoughts from them1 could be exhibited to the life and in fulness2 thus also they even appeared to the eye as very many things together in a form4 ,this speech was therefore as superior to the speech of words as sight is to hearing1 that is1 as the sight of a landscape surpasses hearing about it and forming an idea of it from the verbal description4 ,they added1 that such speech was in agreement with the speech of the angels1 with whom men in those times also had communication2 also1 that when the face speaks1 that is1 the mind through the face1 angelic speech is with the man in its ultimate natural form1 which is not the case when the mouth speaks by words4 ,every one can also comprehend that verbal speech could not have been used by the ,most ,ancient people1 since the words of a language are not imparted immediately1 but have to be invented and applied to objects2 which it requires a course of time to effectz4 ,so long as sincerity and rectitude prevailed among men1 such speech continued2 but as soon as the mind began to think one thing and speak another1 which was the case when man began to love himself and not the neighbour1 verbal speech began to increase1 the face being either silent or deceitful4 ,hence the internal form of the face was changed1 became contracted1 and hardened1 and began to become almost devoid of life2 while the external form1 inflamed by the fire of the love of self1 appeared before the eyes of men as if alive2 for this absence of life1 which is underneath1 does not appear before the eyes of men1 but it appears before the eyes of the angels1 since the angels see interior things4 ,such are the faces of those who think one thing and speak another2 for simulation1 hypocrisy1 cunning1 and deceit1 which constitute modern prudence1 produce such effects4 ,but the case is different in the other life3 there1 no one is allowed to speak one way and think another4 ,there1 also1 the variance is clearly perceived in each single expression1 and when it is perceived1 the spirit in whom there is such variance is expelled from society1 and punished4 ,he is afterwards by various methods brought to speak as he thinks1 and to think as he wills1 until his mind is one1 and not divided4 ,if he is good1 he is brought to will good1 and to think and speak the truth from good2 and if he is evil1 he is brought to will evil1 and to think and speak falsity from evil4 ,until this is effected1 a good spirit is not raised into heaven1 nor an evil one cast into hell3 and the object of this is1 that in hell there may be nothing but evil and the falsity of evil1 and in heaven nothing but good and the truth of good4 ,footnote z3 ,the ,most ,ancient people on this ,earth spoke by the face and lips by means of internal respiration1 nos4 #fjg1 #aaah1 #gcfa4 ,the inhabitants of some other earths have a similar speech1 nos4 #dgii1 #gcei1 #hbdh1 #ajehg4 ,concerning the perfection and excellence of that speech1 nos4 #gcfj1 #ajehg1 #ajgjh4 #ee4 ,the spirits who were from that earth informed me about various other particulars relating to its inhabitants1 as1 about their gait1 their food1 and their dwellings4 ,with respect to their gait1 they do not walk erect like the inhabitants of this and of many other earths1 nor do they creep like animals1 but as they advance they assist themselves with their hands1 and alternately half raise themselves on their feet1 and at every third step they face about sideways and behind them1 and at the same time also bend the body a little1 which is done quickly2 for among them it is considered unbecoming to be looked at by others except in the face4 ,while walking in this manner they always keep the face raised as we do1 so that they may look at the heaven as well as at the earth4 ,they do not hold it down so as to look at the earth2 this they call accursed4 ,the basest among them do so2 but if they do not get accustomed to raise the face1 they are expelled from their society4 ,when1 however1 they sit1 they appear1 like the men of our ,earth1 erect as to the upper part of the body1 but they sit with the feet crossed4 ,they are extremely cautious1 not only when they walk1 but also when they sit1 not to be seen behind1 but in the face4 ,they also gladly desire that their face should be seen1 because their mind appears from it1 for they never show a face at variance with the mind1 nor have they the power to do so4 ,those who are present1 therefore1 see clearly what is their disposition towards them--which indeed they do not conceal--especially whether their apparent friendliness is sincere or forced4 ,these facts were made known to me by their spirits1 and confirmed by their angels4 ,for the above reason also1 their spirits are seen1 not like others1 to walk erect2 but almost like swimmers1 to assist their progress with their hands1 and by turns to look around4 #ef4 ,those who live in their hot climates go naked1 except for a covering about the loins2 nor are they ashamed of their nakedness for their minds are chaste1 and they love their own consorts only1 and abhor adulteries4 ,they were greatly surprised that the spirits of our ,earth1 on hearing of their manner of walking and of their being naked1 should deride and think lasciviously1 without in the least attending to their heavenly life1 but only to such details4 ,they said that this was a sign that they cared more for bodily and earthly things than for heavenly things1 and that indecent thoughts occupied their minds4 ,they were told that nakedness is no occasion either of shame or scandal to those who live in chastity1 and in a state of innocence1 but that it is to those who live in lasciviousness and immodesty4 #eg4 ,when the inhabitants of that earth lie in bed1 they turn their faces forwards or into the chamber1 but not backwards or towards the wall4 ,this was told me by their spirits1 who said that the cause was that they believe that they thus turn their face to the ,lord1 but that if they turn it backwards they turn it away from ,him4 ,the like has sometimes happened to myself when in bed1 but ,i had not previously been aware of its origin4 #eh4 ,they take pleasure in prolonging their repasts1 not so much from delight in feeding as from delight in conversing then4 ,when they sit at table1 they do not sit on chairs or benches1 nor on raised seats of turf1 nor on the grass1 but on the leaves of a particular tree4 ,they were not willing to say of what tree the leaves were2 but when ,i guessed at several1 they at last assented when ,i named the fig tree4 ,they informed me besides1 that they do not prepare their food to please the palate1 but chiefly for the sake of use2 they added that to them the food which is wholesome is savoury4 ,a conversation took place on this subject among the spirits1 and it was urged that it would be well for man to observe this rule1 for thus he would ensure having a sound mind in a sound body4 ,it is otherwise with those with whom the taste rules3 the body hence becomes diseased1 at least it becomes inwardly feeble1 consequently so does the mind2 for the mind comports itself according to the interior state of the recipient parts of the body1 as sight and hearing do according to the state of the eye and ear2 hence the folly of placing all the delight of life in luxury and pleasure2 from this too comes dulness in such things as belong to thought and judgment1 and acuteness in such as belong to the body and the world4 ,by this man acquires the likeness of a brute animal1 with which indeed such persons not inappropriately compare themselves4 #ei4 ,their dwellings were also shown me4 ,they are lowly dwellings constructed of wood2 but within they are lined with bark or cork of a pale blue colour1 and the walls and ceiling are spotted as with stars1 to represent the heaven2 for they are fond of picturing the visible heaven with its constellations in the interiors of their houses1 the reason being that they believe the constellations to be the abodes of the angels4 ,they have tents also1 which are rounded off above and extended in length1 spotted likewise within with stars on a blue ground4 ,they retire into these in the day-time1 to prevent their faces suffering from the heat of the sun4 ,they bestow much care on the fashioning of these tents of theirs1 and on keeping them clean4 ,in them they also take their repasts4 #fj4 ,the horses of our ,earth1 when seen by the spirits of ,jupiter1 appeared to me smaller than usual1 although they were pretty robust and tall2 which appearance arose from the idea those spirits had concerning the horses on that earth4 ,they informed me that among them there are also horses like ours1 though much larger1 but that they are wild or in the woods1 and that when they come in sight they strike terror into them1 although they are quite harmless2 they added that their fear of them is innate or natural4 ,this gave me occasion to think of the cause of that fear4 ,for in the spiritual sense1 a horse signifies the ,intellectual formed from scientificsaa2 and as they are afraid of cultivating the ,intellectual by worldly sciences1 from this comes an influx of fear4 ,that they do not care for scientifics1 which are of human erudition1 will be seen in the following pages4 ,footnote aa3 ,the horse signifies the ,intellectual1 nos4 #bgfj-bgfb1 #cbag1 #ecba1 #fabe1 #fdjj1 #fecd1 #gjbd1 #hadf1 #hadh4 ,and the ,white ,horse in the ,apocalypse denotes the understanding of the ,word1 no4 #bgfj4 #fa4 ,the spirits of that earth are not inclined to associate with the spirits of our ,earth1 because they differ in disposition and manners4 ,they say that the spirits of our ,earth are cunning1 and are quick and clever in the contrivance of evils1 and that they know and think little about what is good4 ,moreover1 the spirits of the earth ,jupiter are much wiser than the spirits of our ,earth2 they also say of ours that they talk much and think little1 and that therefore they cannot interiorly perceive many things1 and that they cannot even perceive what good is4 ,they conclude from this that the men of our ,earth are external men4 ,it was also once permitted the evil spirits of our ,earth to act by their wicked arts1 and to infest the spirits of ,jupiter who were with me4 ,the latter endured them for a very long time1 but at length confessed that they could do so no longer1 and that they believed that there could not be worse spirits1 since they so perverted their imagination1 and also their thought1 that they seemed to themselves as it were bound1 and incapable of being extricated from this bondage1 and set at liberty1 except by ,divine aid4 ,while ,i read from the ,word some passages on the subject of our ,saviour's ,passion1 some ,european spirits uttered dreadful scandals1 with the intention of seducing the spirits of ,jupiter4 ,inquiry being made as to who they were1 and what their profession in the world had been1 it was ascertained that some of them had been preachers1 and many of them were of those who call themselves ,members of the ,society of the ,lord1 or ,jesuits4 ,i remarked that these1 during their life in the world1 by their preachings on the subject of the ,lord's ,passion1 had been able to move the common people to tears4 ,i also added the cause1 that in the world they had thought one way and spoken another1 thus that they had entertained one sentiment in their hearts and professed another with their lips2 but that now they are not allowed to speak thus deceitfully1 for1 on becoming spirits1 they are compelled to speak exactly as they think4 ,the spirits of ,jupiter were exceedingly astonished that there could be such a variance between the interiors and exteriors belonging to a man1 that is to say1 that it should be possible to speak one way and think quite another way1 which would be impossible for them4 ,they were surprised to hear that many who are from our ,earth even become angels1 and that they are of quite a different heart4 ,they had supposed that all on our ,earth were like those evil ones who were then present1 but they were told that many are not of this character1 and that there are also some who think from good1 and not1 like these1 from evil1 and that those who think from good become angels4 ,in order that they might know that this was the case1 there came from the heaven of angels from our ,earth choirs1 one after another1 who glorified the ,lord together with one voice1 and with harmonybb4 ,these choirs affected the spirits of ,jupiter who were with me1 with such intense delight1 that they seemed to themselves as it were caught up into heaven4 ,this glorification by the choirs lasted about one hour4 ,the delights which they experienced from this were communicated to me1 and ,i was enabled to feel them sensibly4 ,they said they would relate this occurrence to those of them who were elsewhere4 ,footnote bb3 ,it is called a choir when many spirits speak at once and unanimously1 concerning which see nos4 #beie1 #beif1 #ccej4 ,in their speech there is harmony1 concerning which see nos4 #afdh1 #afdi4 ,by means of choirs in the other life an inauguration into unanimity is effected1 no4 #eahb4 #fb4 ,the inhabitants of the earth ,jupiter place wisdom in thinking well and justly on all things that occur in life4 ,this wisdom they imbibe from their parents from childhood1 and it is successively transmitted to posterity1 and goes on increasing from the love they have for it as existing with their parents4 ,of the sciences1 such as exist on our ,earth1 they know nothing whatever1 nor have they any desire to know4 ,they call them shades1 and compare them to clouds which come between the earth and the sun4 ,they were led into this idea concerning the sciences by the conduct of some who had come from our ,earth1 who boasted in their presence that they were wise by reason of the sciences4 ,the spirits from our ,earth1 who thus boasted1 were such as placed wisdom in such things as are matters of the memory only1 as in languages1 especially the ,hebrew1 ,greek1 and ,latin1 in the noteworthy publications of the learned world1 in criticism1 in bare experimental facts1 and in terms1 especially philosophical ones1 and other similar things1 not using them as means for becoming wise1 but making wisdom to consist in those very things4 ,such persons1 in consequence of not having cultivated their rational faculty by the sciences as means1 in the other life have little perception1 for they see only in terms and from terms1 and1 for those who see in this way1 those things are as little formless masses1 and as clouds before the intellectual sight 7see above1 no4 #ch72 and those who have been conceited of their learning from this source perceive still less4 ,but those who have used the sciences as means of invalidating and annihilating the things that belong to the church and to faith1 have entirely destroyed their ,intellectual1 and see in the dark like owls1 seeing falsity for truth and evil for good4 ,the spirits of ,jupiter1 from intercourse with such persons1 concluded that the sciences occasion shade and blindness2 it was told them1 however1 that on this ,earth the sciences are means of opening the intellectual sight1 which is in the light of heaven2 but because of the dominion of such things as belong to merely natural and sensual life1 the sciences1 to those who are such1 are means of becoming insane1 that is to say1 of confirming themselves in favour of ,nature against the ,divine1 and in favour of the world against heaven4 ,the sciences1 they were further informed1 are in themselves spiritual riches1 and those who possess them are like those who possess worldly riches1 which likewise are means of performing uses to oneself1 one's neighbour1 and one's country1 and are also means of doing evil to them4 ,they are1 moreover1 like dress1 which serves for use and adornment and also for gratifying pride1 as with those who would be held in honour for that alone4 ,the spirits of the earth ,jupiter understood this perfectly2 but they were surprised that1 being men1 they should stand still in the means1 and prefer to wisdom itself such things as only lead to it2 and that they did not see1 that to immerse the mind in these1 and not raise it above them1 is to becloud and blind it4 #fc4 ,a certain spirit ascending from the lower earth came to me1 and said that he had heard the things that ,i had spoken to the other spirits1 but did not understand anything of what had been said about spiritual life and its light4 ,being asked whether he desired to be instructed on the subject1 he answered that he had not come with that intention1 from which ,i could conclude that such subjects did not come within his comprehension4 ,he was exceedingly stupid4 ,it was stated by the angels that1 when he lived a man in the world1 he had been among the most celebrated for his learning4 ,he was cold1 as was sensibly felt from his breath2 which was a sign that he had no spiritual1 but merely natural light 7lumen72 consequently that by means of the sciences he had not opened but closed up for himself the way to the light 7lux7 of heaven4 #fd4 ,as the inhabitants of the earth ,jupiter acquire intelligence for themselves by a different way from that followed by those of our ,earth1 and as1 besides1 they are of a different natural disposition in consequence of their life1 they cannot be together long1 but either shun them or remove them4 ,there are spheres1 which are to be called spiritual spheres1 which continually emanate1 nay1 pour forth1 from every spirit2 they flow from the activity of the affections and the consequent thoughts1 consequently from the very lifecc4 ,all consociations in the other life take place according to the spheres2 things that are in agreement are conjoined according to the agreement1 and things that disagree are removed according to the disagreement4 ,the spirits and angels who are from the earth ,jupiter have relation1 in the ,grand ,man1 to the ,,imaginative ,,part ,,of ,,thought1 and thus to an active state of the interior parts2 while the spirits of our ,earth have relation to the various functions of the exterior parts of the body1 and when these desire to have the dominion1 the active or imaginative part of thought from the interior cannot flow in4 ,hence the oppositions between the spheres of the life of the two4 ,footnote cc3 ,a spiritual sphere1 which is the sphere of the life1 flows forth and pours forth from every man1 spirit1 and angel1 and encompasses them about1 nos4 #ddfd1 #eagi1 #gded4 ,it flows forth from the life of their affection and consequent thought1 nos4 #bdhi1 #ddfd1 #fbjf4 ,in the other life consociations are effected according to the spheres1 and so also are dissociations1 nos4 #fbjf1 #ifjf1 #ifjg1 #ajcab4 #fe4 ,with respect to their ,divine worship1 its principal feature is that they acknowledge our ,lord as the ,supreme ,being who governs heaven and earth4 ,him they call the ,one only ,lord2 and because they acknowledge and worship ,him during their life in the body1 they seek ,him after death1 and find ,him3 ,he is the same with our ,lord4 ,being questioned whether they knew that the ,one only ,lord is ,man1 they replied that they all know that ,he is ,man1 because in their earth ,he has been seen by many as a ,man2 and that ,he instructs them concerning the truth 7veritas71 preserves them1 and gives eternal life to those who worship ,him from good4 ,they said further1 that it is revealed to them by ,him how they ought to live1 and how they ought to believe2 and that what is revealed is handed on by the parents to the children1 and thus the doctrine spreads to all the families1 and thus to the whole clan that is descended from one father4 ,they added1 that it seems to them as if they had the doctrine written on their minds2 which they conclude from the circumstance1 that they instantly perceive and acknowledge as of themselves1 whether what others say concerning the life of heaven with man is true or not4 ,they do not know that their ,one only ,lord was born a man on our ,earth2 they said that it does not concern them to know this1 but only to know that ,he is ,very ,man1 and governs the universe4 ,when ,i said that on our ,earth ,he is named the ,christ ,jesus1 and that the ,christ signifies the anointed or the king1 and ,jesus1 the ,saviour1 they said that they do not worship ,him as a king1 because kingship savours of what is worldly1 but that they worship ,him as the ,saviour4 ,the spirits of our ,earth having injected a doubt whether their ,one only ,lord was the same with our ,lord1 they removed it by recollecting that they had seen ,him in the sun1 and had acknowledged that it was ,he ,himself whom they had seen on their earth 7see above1 no4 #dj74 ,once also there inflowed with the spirits of ,jupiter who were with me1 a momentary doubt whether their ,one only ,lord was the same as our ,lord2 but this doubt1 which inflowed in a moment1 was also dispelled in a moment2 7it had inflowed from some spirits from our ,earth27 and then1 what surprised me1 they so blushed with shame for having doubted on this point1 though but for a moment1 that they told me not to make it public1 lest on account of it they should be charged with any incredulity1 when yet they now knew it more than others4 ,these spirits were greatly affected and rejoiced when they heard it declared that the ,one only ,lord is the only ,man1 and that all derive from ,him what entitles them to be called men1 and1 indeed1 that they are only so far men as they are images of ,him1 that is1 so far as they love ,him and the neighbour1 consequently so far as they are in good2 for the good of love and of faith is the ,lord's image4 #ff4 ,there were some spirits of the earth ,jupiter with me while ,i was reading the seventeenth chapter of ,john1 relating to the ,lord's love and ,his glorification4 ,on hearing the things that are written there1 a holy influence filled them1 and they acknowledged that all things therein were ,divine4 ,but then some spirits of our ,earth1 who were infidels1 kept insinuating scandals1 saying that the ,lord was born an infant1 lived a man1 appeared like another man1 and was crucified and other like things3 but the spirits of the earth ,jupiter paid no attention to those things4 ,they said that such are their devils1 whom they abhor2 adding1 that in their minds there abides absolutely nothing that is heavenly1 but only what is earthly1 which they called dross4 ,they said that they had also ascertained this to be the case from the fact1 that when they heard that on that earth they go naked1 obscenity instantly occupied their thoughts1 and that they gave no thought at all to their heavenly life1 of which they also heard at the same time4 #fg4 ,in how clear a perception on spiritual subjects the spirits of ,jupiter are1 was made evident to me from their representation of how the ,lord converts depraved affections into good ones4 ,they represented the intellectual mind as a beautiful form1 and imparted to it the activity of a form fit for the life of affection4 ,this they did in a manner which cannot be described in words1 and so skilfully that they were highly commended by the angels4 ,there were present at the time some of the learned from our ,earth1 who had immersed the ,intellectual in terms belonging to scientifics1 and had written and thought much about form1 substance1 the material and the immaterial1 and the like1 without applying them to any use2 these could not even comprehend that representation4 #fh4 ,on their earth the greatest care is taken to prevent any one falling into wrong opinions respecting the ,one only ,lord2 and if they observe that any begin to think wrongly respecting ,him1 they first admonish them1 then deter them by threats1 and at length by punishments4 ,they said they had observed1 that any family1 into which any such thing had crept1 is removed from amongst them1 not by the punishment of death inflicted by their fellow-men1 but by spirits depriving them of respiration and consequently of life1 after first threatening them with death4 ,for in that earth spirits speak with the inhabitants and chastise them if they have done evil1 and also if they have intended to do evil2 of which more will be said in subsequent pages4 ,therefore1 if they think ill concerning the ,one only ,lord1 and do not repent1 they are threatened with death4 ,in this way the worship of the ,lord1 who to them is the ,supreme ,divine1 is preserved on that earth4 #fi4 ,they stated that they have no holy days1 but that every morning at sunrise1 and every evening at sunset1 they perform holy worship to the ,one only ,lord in their tents2 and that they also1 after their manner1 sing sacred songs4 #gj4 ,i was further informed that in that earth there are some who call themselves ,saints1 and who1 under penalty of punishment in case of disobedience1 command their servants1 of whom they have great numbers1 to address them as lords4 ,they also forbid them to adore the ,lord of the universe1 saying that they themselves are mediatory lords1 and that they will convey their supplications to the ,lord of the universe4 ,the ,lord of the universe1 who is our ,lord1 they do not call the ,one only ,lord1 as all the others do1 but the ,supreme ,lord1 for the reason that they call themselves lords4 ,they call the sun of the world the face of the ,supreme ,lord1 and believe that ,he has ,his abode there2 wherefore they also adore the sun4 ,the other inhabitants hold them in aversion1 and are unwilling to have intercourse with them1 both because they adore the sun1 and because they call themselves lords1 and are worshipped by their servants as mediatory gods4 ,their head-dress was shown me by spirits3 it was a high crowned hat of a dark colour4 ,in the other life such appear to the left at some height1 where they sit like idols1 and at first are worshipped by the servants who had formerly been with them2 but these1 too1 afterwards hold them in derision4 ,what surprised me1 their faces there shine as from fire3 this arises from their having believed themselves to be saints2 yet1 notwithstanding this fiery appearance of their faces1 they are cold1 and intensely desire to become warm4 ,from this it is evident that the fire from which they shine is the fire of the love of self1 and an ignis fatuus4 ,in order to acquire warmth they seem to themselves to cut wood1 and while cutting1 under the wood appears something of a man1 whom at the same time they try to strike4 ,this arises from their attributing merit and holiness to themselves3 those who do this in the world1 in the other life seem to themselves to cut wood1 as was likewise the case with some from our ,earth1 who have been spoken of elsewhere4 ,to illustrate this subject1 ,i may here adduce my experience concerning these3,a ,in the lower earth1 under the soles of the feet1 are also those who have placed merit in good acts and works4 ,many of them appear to themselves to cut wood4 ,the place where they are is very cold1 and they seem to themselves to acquire warmth by their labour4 ,with these also ,i have spoken1 and it was given me to ask them whether they had any desire to get out of that place3 to this they replied1 that they had not as yet merited it by their labour4 ,but when this state has been accomplished they are taken out from thence4 ,these spirits are natural1 because wishing to merit salvation is not spiritual1 for it comes from the proprium and not from the ,lord2 and besides1 they prefer themselves to others1 and some of them despise others2 and if they do not receive more joy than others in the other life1 they are indignant against the ,lord2 wherefore when they are cutting wood1 it appears as if something of the ,lord were under the wood4 ,this arises from their indignation4dd ,footnote ,a3 ,arcana1 no4 #didc4 ,see also nos4 #aaaj1 #hgdj4--,,tr4 ,footnote dd3 ,merit and righteousness belong to the ,lord alone1 nos4 #igae1 #iige1 #iigi1 #iiha1 #iihb4 ,those who place merit in works1 or want to merit heaven by the good deeds which they do1 in the other life want to be served1 and are never contented1 no4 #fcic4 ,they despise their neighbour1 and are angry with the ,lord ,himself if they do not receive reward1 no4 #iigf4 ,what their lot in the other life is1 nos4 #idb1 #aggd1 #ahgg1 #bjbg4 ,they are of those who in the lower earth appear to cut wood1 nos4 #aaaj1 #didc4 #ga4 ,it is common on that earth for spirits to speak with the inhabitants1 and to instruct them1 and also to chastise them if they have done evil4 ,as many particulars on this subject have been related to me by their angels1 ,i will recount them in their order4 ,the reason that spirits there speak with men is1 that they think much about heaven and the life after death1 and are comparatively little solicitous about the life of the world2 for they know that they shall live after their decease1 and in a happy state according to the state of their internal man that has been formed in the world4 ,speaking with spirits and angels was common on our ,earth also in ancient times1 and for the same reason1 namely1 that they thought much of heaven and little of the world4 ,but in course of time that living communication with heaven was closed1 in proportion as man1 from being internal1 became external1 or1 what is the same1 as he began to think much about the world and little about heaven1 and especially when he ceased to believe in the existence of heaven and hell1 or in the existence in himself of a spirit-man that lives after death4 ,for at this day it is believed that the body lives from itself and not from its spirit2 wherefore unless man now cherished the belief that he is to rise again with his body1 he would have no belief in the resurrection4 #gb4 ,with reference specially to the presence of spirits with the inhabitants of the earth ,jupiter1 there are spirits who chastise1 spirits who instruct1 and spirits who govern them4 ,the spirits who chastise apply themselves to the left side1 and incline themselves towards the back2 and when there1 they draw out of the man's memory all the things that he has done or thought3 this is easy for spirits to do1 for when they come to a man they enter into all his memoryj4 ,if they find he has done evil1 or has thought evil1 they reprove him1 and also chastise him with pain in the joints of his feet or hands1 or with pain about the region of the belly2 this1 too1 spirits can do skilfully when it is permitted4 ,when such spirits come to a man1 they inspire him with a horror accompanied by fear1 by which the man is made aware of their coming4 ,fear may be excited in any person by evil spirits on their approach1 especially by those who1 during their life in the world1 had been robbers4 ,in order that ,i might know how these spirits act when they come to a man of their own earth1 it was permitted that such a spirit should approach me4 ,when he was near1 horror accompanied by fear manifestly seized hold of me2 yet it was not inwardly that ,i shuddered1 but outwardly1 because ,i knew it was a spirit of such a character4 ,he also came in sight1 and he appeared as a dark cloud1 in which were wandering stars2 wandering stars signify falsities1 but fixed stars signify truths4 ,he applied himself to my left side towards the back2 and he also began to reprove me for deeds and thoughts which he drew out of my memory1 and on which he put a wrong construction2 but he was checked by the angels4 ,when he apperceived that he was with one who was not a man of his own earth1 he began to speak to me1 saying1 that when he comes to a man1 he knows all things in general and particular that the man has done and thought1 and that he severely reproves him1 and also chastises him with various pains4 ,at yet another time such a chastising spirit came to me1 and applied himself to my left side below the middle of the body1 as the former spirit had done2 he also wanted to punish me2 but he1 too1 was restrained by the angels4 ,he showed me1 however1 the kinds of punishments which they are permitted to inflict on the men of their earth1 if they do evil1 or harbour the intention of doing it4 ,these were1 besides the pain of the joints1 a painful contraction about the middle of the belly1 which is felt like compression by a tight belt2 a deprivation of respiration at times even to suffocation2 also a prohibition to eat anything but bread for a time2 and1 lastly1 the threat of death1 if they do not discontinue doing such things1 with the deprivation1 at the same time1 of conjugial1 parental1 and social joy2 grief on this account is then also insinuated4 #gc4 ,the spirits who instruct also apply themselves to their left side1 but more in front4 ,they1 too1 reprove1 but mildly1 and then teach them how they ought to live4 ,they also appear dark1 yet not1 like the former1 as clouds1 but as if clothed with sackcloth4 ,these are called ,instructors1 but the former1 ,chastisers ,when these spirits are present1 angelic spirits are also present1 sitting at the head1 which they fill in a peculiar manner3 their presence there is also perceived as a gentle breathing1 for they fear lest their approach and influx should cause man to perceive the least pain or anxiety4 ,they govern both the chastising and the instructing spirits2 the chastisers1 lest they treat the man more hardly than is permitted by the ,lord1 and the instructors1 that they may teach the truth4 ,while the chastising spirit was with me1 angelic spirits were also present1 and kept my face continually cheerful and smiling1 the region about the lips prominent1 and my mouth slightly open4 ,this the angels easily effect by means of influx1 when the ,lord permits4 ,they said that they induce such a countenance on the inhabitants of their earth1 when they are present with them4 #gd4 ,if a man1 after chastisement and instruction1 again does evil1 or thinks to do evil1 and does not restrain himself in accordance with the precepts of truth1 he is more severely punished when the chastising spirit returns2 but the angelic spirits moderate the punishment according to the intention in the deeds1 and the will in the thoughts4 ,from these facts it may appear1 that their angels who sit at the head have a kind of judicial power over man1 since they permit1 moderate1 restrain1 and influence4 ,it was said1 however1 that it is not they who judge1 but that the ,lord alone is ,judge1 and that all things which they enjoin on the chastising and instructing spirits inflow into them from ,him1 and that it appears as if it were from them4 #ge4 ,spirits there speak with man1 but man in his turn does not speak with the spirits1 except the words1 when instructed1 that he will do so no more4 ,nor is he allowed to tell any one that a spirit has spoken to him2 if he does so1 he is punished afterwards4 ,those spirits of ,jupiter1 when they were with me1 at first supposed that they were with a man of their own earth2 but when ,i in my turn spoke with them1 and also when ,i thought of publishing what passed between us1 and so relating it to others1 then1 because they were not allowed to chastise or instruct me1 they discovered that they were with a stranger4 #gf4 ,there are two signs which appear to those spirits when they are with man 7homo74 ,they see an old man 7vir7 with a white face2 this is a sign to speak only what is true1 and to do only what is just4 ,they also see a face in a window2 this is a sign to them to depart4 ,this old man has also appeared to me2 and a face has also appeared in a window1 on seeing which those spirits immediately departed from me4 #gg4 ,besides the spirits who have already been mentioned1 there are spirits who urge contrary things4 ,they consist of those who1 during their life in the world1 had been banished from the society of others because they were evil4 ,when they approach there appears as it were a flying fire1 which descends near the face4 ,they place themselves beneath at the posterior parts of the man1 and from thence they speak towards the higher parts4 ,they say things that are contrary to what the instructor-spirit teaches from the angels1 namely1 that men should not live according to instruction1 but according to their own inclination1 and in licentiousness1 with other similar things4 ,they generally come after the other spirits have departed2 but the people there know who and what those spirits are1 and therefore pay no attention to them4 ,still1 they learn in this way what evil is1 and thereby what good is2 for by means of evil one learns what good is1 inasmuch as the quality of good is known from its opposite4 ,every perception of a thing is according to reflection relative to its differences from things that are contrary in various ways and degrees4 #gh4 ,the chastising and instructing spirits do not come to those who call themselves saints and mediatory lords1 and who have been treated of above 7at no4 #gj71 as they do to others on that earth1 because they do not suffer themselves to be instructed and are not amended by discipline2 they are inflexible1 because they act from the love of self4 ,spirits say they know such by their coldness1 and that when they apperceive the cold they depart from them4 #gi4 ,among the spirits of ,jupiter there are also some whom they call chimney-sweepers1 because they appear in garments like those of chimney-sweepers1 and with the face smeared with soot2 who and of what character they are ,i am also permitted to describe4 ,one such spirit came to me1 and anxiously entreated me to intercede for him1 that he might come into heaven4 ,he said he did not know that he had done evil1 only that he had rebuked the inhabitants of the earth3 he added that1 after rebuking1 he had instructed them4 ,he applied himself to my left side under the elbow1 and spoke as if with a double voice2 he could also excite pity4 ,but ,i could only say in reply that ,i could not render him any assistance1 and that this was possible for the ,lord alone2 nor could ,i intercede for him1 because ,i did not know whether it would be of any use2 but that if he were worthy he might have hope4 ,he was then sent amongst some well-disposed spirits who were from his own earth2 but they said that he could not be in their company1 because he was not of the same character4 ,but as he still importuned with intense desire to be let into heaven1 he was sent into a society of well-disposed spirits of this ,earth2 but they1 too1 said that he could not be with them4 ,in the light of heaven he was also of a black colour1 but he said that he was not of a black1 but of a murrhine colour4 ,i was told that of such a character at first are the spirits who afterwards are received amongst those who constitute the province of the ,,seminal ,,vesicles in the ,grand ,man or ,heaven2 for in those vesicles the semen is collected1 and is enclosed in a covering of suitable matter fit to preserve the prolific quality of the seed from being dissipated but which may be put off in the neck of the uterus1 so that what is reserved within may be serviceable for conception1 or the impregnation of the ovulum4 ,hence1 also1 that seminal matter has an endeavour1 and as it were a burning desire1 to put itself off1 and leave the semen to perform its use4 ,something similar to this appeared with that spirit4 ,he again came to me in mean raiment1 and again said that he had an ardent desire to enter heaven1 and that he now apperceived that he was such that he could go there4 ,it was then given me to tell him that perhaps this was a sign that he would soon be received4 ,the angels then told him to cast off his raiment1 which1 from the ardency of his desire1 he did with a quickness that could scarcely be surpassed4 ,by this was represented the character of the desires of those who are in the province to which the seminal vesicles correspond4 ,it was said that such spirits1 when prepared for heaven1 are stripped of their own garments1 and clothed with new shining garments1 and become angels4 ,they were likened to caterpillars1 which1 having passed through their vile state1 are changed into chrysalides and then into butterflies1 when they are given other clothing1 and also wings of a blue or yellow1 a silver or golden colour4 ,then1 too1 they are given the freedom to fly in the open air as in their heaven1 to celebrate their marriages1 and lay their eggs1 and so provide for the propagation of their kind2 then also there are given to them sweet and pleasant food which they suck from the juices and odours of the various flowers4 #hj4 ,in what precedes nothing has been said as to the character of the angels who are from that earth2 for those already mentioned 7no4 #gc71 who come to the men of their earth1 and sit at the head1 are not angels in their interior heaven1 but are angelic spirits or angels in their exterior heaven4 ,and as it has been disclosed to me what the character of those interior angels is1 it is permitted me to relate what it has been given me to know concerning them4 ,a certain one of those spirits of ,jupiter1 who inspire fear1 approached my left side beneath the elbow1 and spoke to me from thence4 ,his speech was harsh1 and his expressions were not very distinct and separate from each other1 so that ,i had to consider a long time before ,i could gather the sense2 and while he was speaking he inspired some degree of fear1 admonishing me in this way to receive the angels well when they came4 ,but it was given me to reply that this did not depend on me1 but that with me all were received according to what they themselves were4 ,soon after this the angels of that earth came1 and it was given me to perceive from their speech with me that they differed entirely from the angels of our ,earth2 for their speech was not effected by means of words1 but by means of ideas which diffused themselves through my interiors from all sides3 and for this reason also they had an influx into the face1 so that the face accorded with each particular1 beginning at the lips1 and proceeding towards the circumference in every direction4 ,the ideas1 which were in place of verbal expressions were discrete from each other1 but in a very small degree4 ,afterwards they spoke with me by means of ideas still less discrete1 so that hardly any interval was perceived3 in my perception it was like the meaning of words with those who attend only to the sense abstractedly from the expressions4 ,this speech was more intelligible to me than the former1 and it was also fuller4 ,like the other1 it inflowed into the face1 but the influx was more continuous according to the character of the speech2 it did not1 however1 like the former1 begin at the lips1 but at the eyes4 ,afterwards they spoke in a manner still more continuous and full2 and now the face could not accord by a suitable motion2 but it was felt that the influx was into the brain1 and that this was acted upon in like manner4 ,lastly1 they spoke in such a manner that the speech fell only into the interior understanding2 its fluency was like that of rarefied air4 ,i was sensible of the influx itself1 but not distinctly of the particulars4 ,these several kinds of speech were circumstanced like different fluids--the first kind was like flowing water2 the second like water of less density2 the third like the atmosphere respectively2 and the fourth like rarefied air4 ,the spirit already mentioned1 who was on the left side1 sometimes interposed1 chiefly admonishing me to behave modestly towards his angels2 for there were spirits present from our ,earth who suggested such things as gave displeasure4 ,he said that he did not at first understand what the angels were speaking about1 but that he afterwards did1 when he had moved to my left ear4 ,then also his speech was not harsh as before1 but like that of other spirits4 #ha4 ,i afterwards spoke with the angels respecting some of the remarkable things on our ,earth1 especially the art of printing1 the ,word1 and the various doctrinals of the church from the ,word2 and ,i stated that the ,word and the doctrinals of the church were published1 and were thus learnt4 ,they wondered exceedingly that such things could be made public by writing and printing4 #hb4 ,it was given me to see how the spirits of that earth1 after having been prepared1 are taken up into heaven1 and become angels4 ,on such occasions there appear chariots and shining horses as of fire1 by which they are carried away like ,elijah4 ,the reason why chariots and shining horses as of fire appear1 is that in this way there is represented that they are instructed and prepared to enter heaven2 for chariots signify the doctrinals of the church1 and shining horses1 an enlightened understandingee4 ,footnote ee3 ,chariots signify the doctrinals of the ,church1 nos4 #bgfj1 #ecba1 #hbae4 ,horses signify the ,intellectual1 nos4 #bgfj1 #bgfa1 #bgfb1 #cbag1 #ecba1 #fabe1 #fdjj1 #fecd1 #gjbd1 #hadf1 #hadh1 #hcha4 ,the ,white ,horse in the ,apocalypse signifies the understanding of the ,word1 no4 #bgfj4 ,by ,elijah in the representative sense is meant the ,word1 nos4 #bgfb1 #ebdg4 ,and since all the doctrine of the church and the understanding thereof are from the ,word1 ,elijah is called the chariots of ,israel and the horsemen thereof1 no4 #bgfb4 ,on this account he was taken up by a chariot of fire1 and horses of fire1 nos4 #bgfb1 #hjbi4 #hc4 ,the heaven into which they are carried away appears on the right towards their earth1 consequently separated from the heaven of the angels of our ,earth4 ,the angels who are in that heaven appear clothed in resplendent blue1 spotted with little stars of gold1 and this because they were fond of that colour in the world1 and also believed it to be the most heavenly colour1 especially because they are in that variety of good of love to which this colour correspondsff4 ,footnote ff3 ,blue originating in red or flame corresponds to the good of celestial love2 and blue originating in white or light 7lucidum7 corresponds to the good of spiritual love1 no4 #ihfh4 #hd4 ,there appeared to me a bald head1 but only the topmost part of it1 which was bony4 ,i was told that such a bald head is seen by those who are to die within a year1 and that they then prepare themselves4 ,they do not fear death there1 except on account of leaving their conjugial consorts1 their children1 or their parents1 for they know that they shall live after death1 and that they do not quit life because they go to heaven2 wherefore1 they do not call death dying1 but being heaven-made4 ,those on that earth who have lived in truly conjugial love1 and have taken such care of their children as becomes parents1 do not die of disease1 but tranquilly as in sleep1 and so pass from the world into heaven4 ,the age of man there is generally thirty years1 according to the years of our ,earth4 ,it is of the ,lord's ,providence that they die within such a short space of time1 lest the number of men should increase beyond what that earth can support4 ,and as1 when they have completed those years1 they do not suffer themselves to be led by spirits and angels1 like those who have not yet completed them1 spirits and angels seldom attend those who have passed that age4 ,they also come to maturity sooner than on our ,earth4 ,they also contract marriages in the first flower of early manhood1 and then their delights consist in loving their conjugial partners and taking care of their children4 ,other delights they indeed call delights1 but relatively external ones4 ,,the ,,earth ,,or ,,planet ,,mars1 ,,and ,,its ,,spirits ,,and ,,inhabitants4 #he4 ,of all the spirits who come from the earths of this solar system1 those of ,mars are the best1 being for the most part celestial men1 not unlike those who were of the ,most ,ancient ,church on this ,earthgg4 ,when they are represented as to their quality1 they are represented with the face in heaven and the body in the world of spirits2 and those of them who are angels are represented with the face towards the ,lord and the body in heaven4 ,footnote gg3 ,the first and ,most ,ancient ,church on this earth was a celestial church1 which was the chief of all1 concerning which1 see nos4 #fjg1 #hie1 #ibj1 #aaba1 #aabb1 #aabc1 #aabd1 #bhif1 #ddic1 #hhia1 #iidb1 #ajede4 ,a church is called celestial wherein love to the ,lord is the principal thing1 but spiritual wherein the principal thing is charity towards the neighbour1 and faith1 nos4 #cfia1 #fdce1 #idfh1 #ifhj1 #ifhc1 #ighj4 #hf4 ,in the idea of spirits and angels1 the planet ,mars1 like the planets elsewhere1 appears constantly in its own place1 which is to the left in front1 at some distance1 in the plane of the breast1 and thus outside of the sphere where the spirits of our ,earth are4 ,the spirits of one earth are separated from those of another1 because the spirits of each earth have relation to some particular province in the ,grand ,manf2 and are1 therefore1 in other and different states2 and this diversity of state causes them to appear separate from each other1 either to the right or to the left1 at a greater or lesser distancehh4 ,footnote hh3 ,distances in the other life are real appearances1 which are exhibited to the sight by the ,lord1 according to the states of the interiors of angels and spirits1 nos4 #efjd1 #iajd1 #iddj1 #ajadf4 #hg4 ,spirits from thence came to me1 and applied themselves to my left temple1 where they breathed their speech upon me1 but ,i did not understand it4 ,as to its flow it was very soft3 ,i had never before perceived any softer2 it was like a very gentle breeze4 ,it breathed first upon the left temple1 and upon the upper part of the left ear2 the breathing proceeded thence to the left eye1 and by degrees to the right1 and flowed down afterwards1 especially from the left eye1 to the lips2 and when at the lips it entered through the mouth1 and through a way within the mouth1 and1 indeed1 through the ,eustachian tube1 into the brain4 ,when the breathing arrived there1 ,i understood their speech1 and was enabled to speak with them4 ,when they spoke with me1 ,i observed that my lips were moved1 and my tongue also slightly1 which was owing to the correspondence of interior with exterior speech4 ,exterior speech is that of articulate sound which impinges upon the external membrane of the ear1 and it is conveyed from thence1 by means of the small organs1 membranes1 and fibres1 which are within the ear1 to the brain4 ,from these facts it was given me to know that the speech of the inhabitants of ,mars was different from that of the inhabitants of our ,earth1 in that it is not sonorous1 but almost tacit1 insinuating itself into the interior hearing and sight by a shorter way2 and that1 being such1 it was more perfect1 and fuller of the ideas of thought1 thus approaching nearer to the speech of spirits and angels4 ,among them the very affection of the speech is also represented in the face1 and its thought in the eyes2 for with them thought and speech1 and affection and the face1 act in unity4 ,they account it infamous to think one thing and speak another1 and to will one thing and show another in the face4 ,they know not what hypocrisy is1 nor fraudulent simulation and deceit4 ,the same kind of speech prevailed amongst the ,most ,ancient inhabitants of our ,earth1 as it has been given me to learn by conversation with some of them in the other life2 and to elucidate this subject ,i may relate what ,i have heard respecting it1 as follows3 ,it was shown me by an influx which ,i cannot describe1 what was the character of the speech which prevailed amongst those who were of the ,most ,ancient ,churchgg4 ,it was not articulate1 like the vocal speech of our time1 but tacit1 being effected1 not by external1 but by internal respiration1 consequently it was a cogitative speech4 ,it was given me also to apperceive the character of their internal respiration4 ,it proceeded from the navel towards the heart1 and so through the lips without sound when they spoke4 ,it did not enter the ear of another by an external way1 and strike upon what is called the drum of the ear1 but by a certain internal way1 and indeed by what at this day is called the ,eustachian tube4 ,it was shown me1 that by such speech they could express the feelings of the mind 7animus71 and the ideas of thought1 much more fully than can possibly be done by articulate sounds or audible expressions1 which speech is likewise directed by respiration1 but external2 for there is not a vocal sound1 yea1 there is nothing in a vocal sound1 which is not directed by applications of the respiration4 ,but with them this was done much more perfectly1 because by the internal respiration1 which1 because more interior1 is also more perfect1 and more applicable and conformable to the very ideas of thought2 besides1 it is done also by slight motions of the lips1 and corresponding changes of the face2 for1 as they were celestial men1 whatever they thought shone forth from their face and eyes1 which were conformably varied1 the face as to form according to the life of the affection1 and the eyes as to light4 ,it was quite impossible for them to present a countenance which was not in agreement with their thoughts4 ,as their speech was effected by internal respiration1 which is that of the human spirit itself1 they could have communion with angels1 and speak with them4 ,the respiration of the spirits of ,mars was also communicated to meii1 and it was perceived that it proceeded from the region of the chest towards the navel1 and thence flowed upwards through the breast1 with an imperceptible breathing 7halitus7 towards the mouth4 ,from these facts1 and also from other experiential proofs1 it was made evident to me that they were of a celestial genius1 consequently1 that they were not unlike those who belonged to the ,most ,ancient ,church on this earth4 ,footnote ii3 ,spirits and angels have respiration1 nos4 #chhd1 #chhe1 #chia1 #chic4 #hh4 ,i was informed that the spirits of ,mars in the ,grand ,man have relation to the medium between the ,intellectual and the ,voluntary1 consequently to ,,thought ,,from ,,affection1 and the best of them to ,,the ,,affection ,,of ,,thought2 hence it is that their face acts in unity with their thought1 and that they cannot simulate in the presence of anyone4 ,and as this is their relation in the ,grand ,man1 the middle province1 which is between the cerebrum and the cerebellum1 corresponds to them2 for with those in whom the cerebrum and the cerebellum are conjoined as to spiritual operations1 the face acts in unity with the thought1 so that the very affection of the thought shines forth from the face1 and the general character of the thought from the affection1 and also from certain signs that show themselves in the eyes4 ,wherefore1 while they were with me1 ,i sensibly apperceived a drawing back of the anterior part of the head towards the hinder part1 thus of the cerebrum towards the cerebellumkk4 ,footnote kk3 ,human faces on our ,earth in ancient times received influx from the cerebellum1 and then the face acted in unity with the interior affections of the man2 but afterwards they received influx from the cerebrum when man began to simulate and counterfeit by the face affections not his own4 ,concerning the changes thereby occasioned to the face in course of time1 see nos4 #dcbe-dcbh4 #hi4 ,on one occasion when spirits of ,mars were with me1 and occupied the sphere of my mind1 spirits from our ,earth came and desired to intrude themselves also into that sphere2 but the spirits of our ,earth became as if insane3 this was caused by their being quite out of harmony2 for the spirits of our ,earth in the ,grand ,man have relation to the external sense1 and consequently these spirits were in idea turned towards the world and towards self1 while the spirits of ,mars were in idea turned from self to heaven and the neighbour2 hence the contrariety4 ,but some angelic spirits of ,mars then approached1 and on their coming the communication was taken away1 and so the spirits of our ,earth departed4 #ij4 ,the angelic spirits spoke with me concerning the life of the inhabitants on their earth2 saying that they are not under forms of government1 but are distinguished into greater and lesser societies1 in which they associate themselves with such as agree in disposition1 which they know at once by the face and speech1 and in this they are seldom mistaken2 they are then instantly friends4 ,they also said their consociations are delightful1 and that they converse with each other on what passes in their societies1 and especially in heaven1 for many of them have open communication with the angels of heaven4 ,those in their societies who begin to think wrongly1 and consequently to will what is evil1 are dissociated and left to themselves alone1 in consequence of which they drag on a most wretched life1 out of society1 among rocks or other places1 for the rest no longer trouble about them4 ,some societies try by various methods to compel such persons to repent2 but when this is to no purpose they dissociate themselves from them4 ,thus they take precautions lest the lust of dominion and the lust of gain should creep in1 that is1 lest from the lust of dominion any should subject some society to themselves1 and afterwards many others2 and lest from the lust of gain any should deprive others of their goods4 ,every one there lives content with his own goods1 and every one with his own honour1 that of being reputed just and a lover of the neighbour4 ,this delightful and tranquil state of mind 7animus7 would perish1 unless those who think and will evil were cast out1 and a prudent but severe check given to the first beginnings of the love of self and the love of the world4 ,for these are the loves which first led to the establishment of empires and kingdoms1 within which there are few who do not desire to acquire dominion1 and to possess the goods of others1 for there are few who do what is just and fair from a love of justice and fairness1 still less who do good from charity itself1 but most from fear of the law1 the loss of life1 of gain1 of honour1 and of reputation for the sake of these4 #ia4 ,concerning the ,divine worship of those who dwell on that earth1 they said that they acknowledge and adore our ,lord1 saying that ,he is the only ,god1 and that ,he governs both heaven and the universe2 that all good is from ,him1 and that ,he leads them2 also that ,he very often appears on their earth amongst them4 ,it was then given me to tell them that on our ,earth ,christians also know that the ,lord governs heaven and earth1 according to ,his own words in ,matthew1 ,all power is given unto ,me in heaven and on earth 7xxviii4 #ah71 but that they do not believe it as those who belong to the earth ,mars do4 ,they said also that there they believe that with themselves there is nothing but what is filthy and infernal1 and that all good is of the ,lord2 nay1 they added that of themselves they are devils1 and that the ,lord draws them out of hell1 and continually withholds them from it4 ,on one occasion1 when the ,lord was named1 ,i saw that those spirits humbled themselves more inwardly and profoundly than can be described3 for in their humiliation there was the thought that of themselves they were in hell1 and that thus they were utterly unworthy to look to the ,lord1 who is the ,holy itself4 ,so profoundly were they in this thought from faith1 that they were1 as it were1 outside of themselves1 and in that thought they remained on their knees till the ,lord raised them1 and then drew them as it were out of hell4 ,when they thus emerge from humiliation1 they are filled with good and love1 and consequently with joy of heart4 ,when they humble themselves in this manner1 they do not turn their face to the ,lord1 for this they dare not do then1 but avert it4 ,the spirits who were about me said that never had they seen such humiliation4 #ib4 ,some spirits who were from that earth were surprised that so many spirits from hell were about me1 and that they also spoke to me2 but it was given me to reply that this was permitted them for the purpose of enabling me to know their characters1 and why they are in hell1 and that this is according to their life4 ,it was also given me to state that there were several among them whom ,i had known when they lived in the world1 and that some of them had then occupied stations of great dignity1 and that then they had nothing at heart but the world2 but that no evil spirit1 even the most infernal1 could possibly do me any injury1 because ,i was continually protected by the ,lord4 #ic4 ,an inhabitant of that earth was exhibited before me4 ,he was not indeed an inhabitant1 but was like one4 ,his face resembled the faces of the inhabitants of our ,earth1 but the lower part of the face was black1 not owing to a beard1 which he had not1 but to blackness in its place4 ,this blackness extended to underneath the ears on both sides4 ,the upper part of the face was ruddy1 like the faces of the inhabitants of our ,earth who are not quite fair4 ,they said further that on their earth they subsist on the fruits of trees1 especially on a certain kind of round fruit which grows out of their earth2 and likewise on pulse4 ,they are clothed with garments which they make of the fibres of the inner bark of certain trees1 which fibres have such a consistence that they can be woven1 and also cemented together by a kind of gum they have among them4 ,they related further that they know how to make fluid fires1 from which they have light during evening and night4 #id4 ,i saw a certain flaming object1 exceedingly beautiful2 it was of various colours1 crimson1 and also a glowing ruby hue1 and from the flame the colours also glowed beautifully4 ,i also saw a hand1 to which this flaming object adhered1 at first on the back of it1 afterwards on the palm or hollow1 and from thence it played round about the hand4 ,this continued for some time4 ,afterwards this hand with the flaming object was removed to a distance and where it rested there was a bright light 7lucidum74 ,in that bright light the hand disappeared2 and the flaming object was then changed into a bird1 whose colours were at first similar to those of the flaming object1 and gleamed in the same manner2 but these colours gradually changed1 and with them the vigour of life in the bird4 ,it flew about1 at first about my head1 then forwards into a kind of narrow chamber1 which appeared like a sanctuary1 and as it flew onwards its life departed1 and at length it became stony2 it was then at first of a pearly1 afterwards of a dusky colour2 but although without life1 it kept on flying4 ,while this bird was flying about my head1 and still in the vigour of life1 a spirit was seen rising up from below1 through the region of the loins to that of the breast1 and from there he wished to take that bird2 but because it was so beautiful1 the spirits who were about me prevented his doing so1 for the eyes of all were fixed upon it4 ,but this spirit who had risen up from below used all his power to persuade them that the ,lord was with him1 and consequently that he was acting from the ,lord4 ,although the most of them did not believe this1 they nevertheless no longer hindered him from taking the bird2 but as at that moment heaven inflowed he was unable to retain it1 but immediately1 opening his hand1 set it free4 ,when this had taken place1 the spirits who were around me1 and who had intently watched the bird and its successive changes1 began talking with each other about it1 and they continued talking for a considerable time4 ,they perceived that such a sight could not but signify something heavenly2 they knew that what is flaming signifies celestial love and its affections2 that a hand1 to which the flaming object adhered1 signifies life and its power2 that changes of the colours signify the varieties of life as to wisdom and intelligence2 that a bird has the same signification with this difference1 however1 that what is flaming signifies celestial love and the things that belong to celestial love1 while a bird signifies spiritual love and the things that belong to that love2 7celestial love is love to the ,lord1 and spiritual love is charity towards the neighbour1note gg72 and that the changes of the colours and at the same time of the life in the bird1 till it became stony1 signify the successive changes of spiritual life as to intelligence4 ,they also knew that the spirits who ascend from below1 through the region of the loins to that of the breast1 are in a strong persuasion that they are in the ,lord1 and consequently believe that whatever they do1 even though it be evil1 they do of the ,lord's will4 ,but nevertheless this did not enable them to know who were meant by that sight4 ,at length they were instructed from heaven1 that the inhabitants of ,mars were meant2 that their celestial love1 in which many of them still are1 was signified by the flaming object that adhered to the hand2 and that the bird in the beginning1 while it was in the beauty of its colours and the vigour of its life1 signified their spiritual love3 but that the bird when it had become as it were stony and devoid of life1 and at length of a dusky colour1 signified those inhabitants who have removed themselves from the good of love1 and are in evil1 and still believe1 nevertheless1 that they are in the ,lord4 ,the same thing was signified by the spirit who rose up and wished to take away the bird4 #ie4 ,the bird of stone also represented inhabitants of that earth1 who by a strange method transmute the life of their thoughts and affections into almost no life1 on which subject ,i have learned the following particulars4 ,there was a certain spirit above my head who spoke with me1 and from the tone of his voice he was apperceived to be as it were in a state of sleep4 ,in this state he spoke many things1 and with a sagacity 7prudentia7 that he could not have surpassed when awake4 ,it was given me to perceive that he was a subject through whom angels spoke1 and that in that state he apperceived their speech and produced itll2 for he spoke nothing but what was true2 if anything inflowed from any other source1 he indeed admitted it1 but did not produce it4 ,i questioned him respecting his state4 ,he said that to him that state was a peaceful one1 and was free from all solicitude respecting the future2 and that at the same time he was performing uses by which he had communication with heaven4 ,i was told that such1 in the ,grand ,man1 have relation to the longitudinal sinus1 which lies in the brain between its two hemispheres1 and is there in a tranquil state1 no matter how disturbed the brain may be on either side4 ,while ,i was in conversation with this spirit1 some spirits introduced themselves towards the anterior part of the head where he was1 and pressed upon him2 wherefore he retired to one side1 and gave place to them4 ,the spirit strangers spoke with each other2 but neither the spirits about me1 nor ,i myself1 understood what they said4 ,i was informed by the angels that they were spirits from the earth ,mars1 who have the skill to speak with each other in such a way that the spirits present could not understand or perceive anything4 ,i wondered that there could possibly be speech of this kind1 since for all spirits there is one speech1 which flows from thought1 and consists of ideas which are heard as vocal expressions in the spiritual world4 ,i was told that those spirits have a certain method of forming ideas1 expressed by the lips and face1 unintelligible to others1 and that they at the same instant skilfully withdraw their thoughts1 guarding particularly lest anything of the affection should manifest itself1 because if anything of the affection were perceived1 the thought would appear1 for the thought flows from the affection1 and as it were in it4 ,i was further informed that such speech was contrived by those inhabitants of ,mars1--though not by all1--who make heavenly life to consist in knowledges alone1 and not in the life of love2 and that when they become spirits they retain it4 ,these are they who were specially signified by the bird of stone2 for to produce a speech by alterations of the face and motions of the lips1 with a removal of the affections and a withdrawal of the thoughts from others1 is to deprive speech of life and make it like an image1 and by degrees to produce the same effect on themselves4 ,but although they imagine that what they speak among themselves is not understood by others1 angelic spirits nevertheless perceive each and all of the things they say1 the reason being that no thought can be withdrawn from them4 ,this was also shown them by actual experience4 ,i was thinking of the fact that the evil spirits of our ,earth are not affected with shame when they infest others4 ,this thought inflowed with me from some angelic spirits who perceived their speech4 ,those spirits of ,mars then acknowledged that this was the subject they were speaking of among themselves1 and they were astonished4 ,besides this1 more things1 both of their conversation and thought1 were disclosed by an angelic spirit1 notwithstanding all their endeavours to hide away their thoughts from him4 ,afterwards those spirits inflowed from above into my face4 ,the influx was felt like fine striated rain1 which was a sign that they were not in the affection of truth and of good1 for this is represented by what is striated4 ,they then spoke plainly with me1 saying1 that the inhabitants of their earth speak in the same way among themselves4 ,they were then told that this is evil1 as by so doing they block up the internals1 and recede from them to the externals1 which also they deprive of their life2 and especially because it is not sincere to speak in this manner4 ,for they who are sincere do not wish to speak or even to think anything but what others1 yea1 what all1 even the whole heaven1 might know4 ,but those who are unwilling that others should know what they say1 pass judgment on others1 and think ill of others and well of themselves1 and at length are led by habit so far as to think and speak ill of the church1 and of heaven1 yea1 of the ,lord ,himself4 ,i have been told that those who love knowledges1 and not so much a life according to them1 have relation1 in the ,grand ,man1 to the inner membrane of the skull2 but that those who accustom themselves to speak without affection1 and to draw the thought to themselves and withdraw it from others1 have relation to that membrane1 when it has become ossified1 because1 from having some spiritual life1 they come at length to have none4 ,footnote ll3 ,communications are effected by means of spirits sent forth from societies of spirits and angels to other societies1 and these emissary spirits are called ,subjects1 nos4 #ddjc1 #ehef1 #eihc1 #eihe-eihi4 #if4 ,as the bird of stone represented those also who are in knowledges alone1 and in no life of love1 and as these consequently have no spiritual life1 therefore1 by way of appendix1 ,i may here show that those only have spiritual life who are in heavenly love1 and thence in knowledges2 and that a love contains in itself all the power of knowing 7cognitinum7 which belongs to that love4 ,take for example the animals of the earth1 and also the living creatures of the heaven1 that is1 the birds4 ,these have the knowledge 7scientia7 of all things that belong to their love4 ,their loves are1 to nourish themselves1 to dwell safely1 to propagate their kind1 to take care of their young1 and1 with some1 to provide for the winter4 ,they have1 therefore1 all the requisite knowledge1 for this is inherent in those loves1 and inflows into them as into its own receptacles2 and this knowledge in some animals is such that man cannot but be amazed at it4 ,their knowledge is connate and is called instinct2 but it belongs to the natural love in which they are4 ,if man were in his own love1 which is love to ,god and towards the neighbour1 7this love is man's peculiar love1 by which he is distinguished from beasts1 and it is heavenly love17 he would not only be in all requisite knowledge1 but likewise in all intelligence and wisdom2 for these qualities would inflow into those loves from heaven1 that is1 from the ,divine through heaven4 ,as1 however1 man is not born into those loves1 but into their contraries1 that is to say1 into the loves of self and of the world1 therefore he cannot but be born in complete ignorance and want of knowledge ,but by ,divine means he is brought to something of intelligence and wisdom1 yet not actually into any1 unless the loves of self and of the world are removed1 and a way is thus opened for love to ,god and towards the neighbour4 ,that love to ,god and love towards the neighbour have in them all intelligence and wisdom1 may appear from those who have been in those loves in the world4 ,these1 when1 after death1 they come into heaven1 know and are wise in things of which they previously knew nothing2 yea1 they there think and speak1 like the rest of the angels1 such things as the ear has not heard1 nor the mind known1 which are ineffable4 ,the reason is1 that those loves have the faculty of receiving such things into themselves4 ,,the ,,earth ,,or ,,planet ,,saturn1 ,,and ,,its ,,spirits ,,and ,,inhabitants4 #ig4 ,the spirits from that earth appear in front at a considerable distance1 below1 in the plane of the knees1 where that earth itself is2 and when the eye is opened thither1 a multitude of spirits come into view1 who are all from that earth4 ,they are seen on this side of that earth1 and to the right of it4 ,it has been given me to speak with them also1 and thereby to know of what character they are relatively to others4 ,they are well-disposed1 and they are modest2 and as they esteem themselves little1 therefore also in the other life they appear small4 #ih4 ,they are extremely humble in worship1 for in worship they esteem themselves as nothing4 ,they worship our ,lord1 and acknowledge ,him as the only ,god4 ,the ,lord also appears to them at times under an angelic form1 and thus as a ,man1 and at such times the ,divine shines forth from ,his face1 and affects the mind 7animus74 ,the inhabitants also1 when they come of age1 speak with spirits1 by whom they are instructed concerning the ,lord1 and how ,he ought to be worshipped1 and also how they ought to live4 ,when any desire to lead astray the spirits who are from that earth1 and to draw them away from faith in the ,lord1 or from humiliation towards ,him1 and from uprightness of life1 they say they wish to die4 ,on these occasions there appear in their hands small knives1 with which they seem to desire to strike their breasts4 ,on being questioned why they do so1 they say that they would rather die than be drawn away from the ,lord4 ,the spirits of our ,earth sometimes mock at them on this account1 and assail them with reproaches for acting so2 but their reply is1 that they are well aware that they do not kill themselves1 but that this is only an appearance flowing forth from the will of their mind 7animus7 rather to die than be drawn away from the worship of the ,lord4 #ii4 ,they said that sometimes spirits from our ,earth come to them and ask them what ,god they worship1 their answer to whom is1 that they are insane1 and that there can be no greater insanity than to ask what ,god any one worships1 when yet there is but one ,god for all in the universe2 and that still more insane are they in not saying that the ,lord is that ,one only ,god1 and that ,he governs the whole heaven1 and consequently the whole world1 since ,he who governs heaven must also govern the world1 because the world is governed by means of heaven4 #ajj4 ,they said that on their earth there are some who call the nocturnal light 7lumen71 which is great1 the ,lord1 but that these are separated from the rest1 and are not tolerated by them4 ,that nocturnal light 7lumen7 comes from the great ring which encircles that earth at a distance1 and from the moons which are called the satellites of ,saturn4 #aja4 ,they related that another kind of spirits1 who go in troops1 frequently come to them1 desiring to learn how things are with them1 and that by various methods they elicit from them whatever they know4 ,they said of these spirits1 that they are not insane1 except in this particular1 that they desire to know so much for no other use than that simply of knowing4 ,they were afterwards instructed that these spirits are from the planet ,mercury1 that is1 from the earth nearest the sun1 and that they are delighted with knowledges alone1 and not so much with the uses from them4 #ajb4 ,the inhabitants and spirits of the planet ,saturn have relation1 in the ,grand ,man1 to the ,,middle ,,sense ,,between ,,the ,,spiritual ,,and ,,the ,,natural ,,man1 but to that which recedes from the natural and accedes to the spiritual4 ,hence it is that those spirits appear to be carried away or caught up into heaven1 and soon afterwards let down again2 for whatever belongs to spiritual sense is in heaven1 but whatever belongs to natural sense is beneath heaven4 ,inasmuch as the spirits of our ,earth1 in the ,grand ,man1 have relation to natural and corporeal sense1 it has been given me to know from manifest experience how the spiritual and the natural man1 when the latter is not in faith and charity1 fight and contend with each other4 ,some spirits of the earth ,saturn came into view from afar1 and then a living communication was opened between them and spirits of our ,earth who were of this character4 ,these latter1 on thus perceiving the spirits of ,saturn1 became as if insane1 and began to infest them1 infusing unworthy ideas concerning faith1 and also concerning the ,lord4 ,while uttering invective and abuse1 they also cast themselves into the midst of them1 and1 from the insanity in which they were1 endeavoured to do them injury4 ,the spirits of ,saturn1 however1 were not at all afraid1 because they were secure and in tranquillity2 but those spirits of our ,earth1 when in the midst of them1 began to be tortured1 and to breathe with difficulty1 and so rushed out1 one in this direction1 another in that1 and disappeared4 ,those who were present apperceived from this what is the character of the natural man1 separate from the spiritual1 when he comes into a spiritual sphere1 namely1 that he is insane2 for the natural man separate from the spiritual is wise only from the world1 and not at all from heaven2 and he who is wise only from the world1 believes nothing but what the senses apprehend1 and what he believes he believes from the fallacies of the senses1 which1 unless they are removed by the influx from the spiritual world1 produce falsities4 ,hence it is that spiritual things are nothing to him1 insomuch that he can hardly bear to hear the word spiritual mentioned2 wherefore such become insane when they are kept in a spiritual sphere4 ,it is different while they live in the world2 then they either think naturally about spiritual things1 or avert their ears1 that is1 hear and do not attend4 ,it was also manifest from this experience1 that the natural man cannot introduce himself into the spiritual1 that is1 ascend2 but that1 when man is in faith1 and thus in spiritual life1 the spiritual man inflows into the natural1 and thinks therein2 for there is spiritual influx1 that is1 influx from the spiritual world into the natural1 but not contrariwisemm4 ,footnote mm3 ,there is spiritual influx1 and not physical or natural influx1 consequently influx is from the spiritual world into the natural1 and not from the natural into the spiritual1 nos4 #cbai1 #eaai1 #ebei1 #edbg1 #edbh1 #edgg1 #fcbb4 ,it appears as if influx were from externals into man's internals1 but this is a fallacy1 no4 #cgba4 #ajc4 ,furthermore1 the spirits of that earth gave me information concerning the inhabitants1 the nature of their consociations and other particulars4 ,they said that they live divided into families1 every family apart from the others2 thus1 a man 7vir7 and wife with their children2 and that these1 when they unite in marriage1 are separated from the house of the parents1 and have no further care about it2 wherefore the spirits from that earth appear in pairs4 ,that they are little solicitous about food and raiment2 that they live on the fruits and pulse which their earth produces2 and that they are lightly clothed1 being girt with a coarse skin or coat1 which keeps out the cold4 ,further1 that all on that earth know that they shall live after death2 and that on this account they have no care for their body1 except so far as is necessary for the sake of the life which they say is to endure and to serve the ,lord2 that for this reason also they do not bury the bodies of the dead1 but cast them away1 and cover them with branches of trees from the forest4 #ajd4 ,being questioned concerning that great belt which appears from our ,earth to rise above the horizon of that planet1 and to vary its positions1 they said1 that it does not appear to them as a belt1 but only as a snowy something in the sky in various directions4 ,,the ,,earth ,,or ,,planet ,,venus1 ,,and ,,its ,,spirits ,,and ,,inhabitants4 #aje4 ,the planet ,venus1 in the idea of spirits and angels1 appears to the left a little behind1 at some distance from our ,earth4 ,it is said1 in the idea of spirits1 because to no spirit does the sun of this system1 or any planet1 appear2 but spirits have only an idea that they exist4 ,in consequence of this bare idea1 the sun of this system is exhibited behind as a very dark something1 and the planets not moving as in the system1 but remaining constantly in their places 7see above1 no4 #db74 #ajf4 ,in the planet ,venus there are two kinds of men1 of contrary dispositions2 the first mild and humane1 the second savage and almost brutal4 ,those who are mild and humane appear on the other side of the earth1 those who are savage and almost brutal appear on the side of it looking this way4 ,but it should be known that they appear thus according to the states of their life1 for the state of life determines every appearance of space and of distance there4 #ajg4 ,some of those who appear on the other side of the planet1 and who are mild and humane1 came to me1 and were presented to my sight overhead1 and ,i spoke with them on various subjects4 ,amongst other things1 they said that while they were in the world they acknowledged1 and now still more acknowledge1 our ,lord as their ,one only ,god4 ,they added that on their earth they had seen ,him1 and they also represented how they had seen ,him4 ,these spirits1 in the ,grand ,man1 have relation to the memory of material things1 agreeing with the memory of immaterial things1 to which the spirits of ,mercury have relation3 wherefore the spirits of ,mercury have the fullest agreement with these spirits of ,venus2 therefore1 when they were together1 ,i was sensible from their influx of a remarkable change1 and a powerful operation in my brain 7see above1 no4 #dc74 #ajh4 ,i did not1 however1 speak with those spirits who are on the side that looks this way1 and who are savage and almost brutal2 but the angels informed me of their character1 and the origin of their so brutal nature3 it is this2 they are greatly delighted with robbery1 and more especially with eating the prey4 ,the delight they have in thinking about eating the prey was communicated to me1 and was apperceived to be exceedingly great4 ,that there have also been inhabitants of a like brutal nature1 on our ,earth1 appears from the histories of various nations2 also from the inhabitants of the land of ,canaan 7#a ,sam4 xxx4 #af72 and likewise from the ,jewish and ,israelitish nation even in the time of ,david1 in that they made yearly excursions1 and plundered the nations1 and rejoiced in feasting on the booty4 ,i was informed1 further1 that the greater part of those inhabitants are giants1 and that the men of our ,earth reach only to their navel2 also1 that they are stupid1 not seeking to know anything about heaven or eternal life1 their only care being about their land and their cattle4 #aji4 ,as they are of this character1 even when they come into the other life1 they are greatly infested there by evils and falsities4 ,their hells appear near the earth1 and do not communicate with the hells of the evil of our ,earth1 because they are of an entirely different genius and disposition2 hence also their evils and falsities are of an entirely different kind4 #aaj4 ,but those of them who are such that they can be saved1 are in places of vastation1 and are there reduced to the last degree of despair2 for evils and falsities of this kind cannot otherwise be subdued and removed4 ,when they are in the state of despair1 they cry out that they are beasts1 that they are abominations1 that they are hatreds1 and thus that they are damned4 ,some of them1 when in such a state1 even cry out against heaven2 but for this they are forgiven1 because it proceeds from despair4 ,the ,lord restrains them from indulging in vituperation beyond fixed limits4 ,when they have passed through extreme suffering1 the corporeal principles with them being then as it were dead1 they are finally saved4 ,it was also said of them that1 during their life on their earth1 they had believed in a certain supreme ,creator without a ,mediator2 but when they are saved1 they are also instructed that the ,lord is the only ,god1 ,saviour1 and ,mediator4 ,i have seen some of them1 after they had passed through extreme suffering1 taken up into heaven2 and when they were received there1 ,i have apperceived such a tenderness of joy from them as drew tears from my eyes4 ,,the ,,spirits ,,and ,,inhabitants ,,of ,,the ,,moon4 #aaa4 ,some spirits appeared overhead1 and voices like thunders were heard thence2 for their voices thundered forth just as thunders do from the clouds after lightnings4 ,i supposed that there was an immense multitude of spirits1 who had acquired the art of uttering their voices with such a sound4 ,the more simple spirits who were with me laughed at them1 at which ,i greatly marvelled4 ,the cause of their laughter was soon disclosed1 and it was1 that the spirits who thundered were not many1 but few1 and were also small as children1 and that on former occasions they had terrified them by such sounds1 and yet were quite unable to do them the least harm4 ,in order that ,i might know their character1 some of them let themselves down from on high1 where they were thundering2 and1 strange to say1 one carried another on his back1 and the two thus approached me4 ,their faces appeared not unhandsome1 but longer than those of other spirits4 ,in stature they were like boys of seven years old1 but of more robust frame2 so that they were dwarfs4 ,i was told by the angels that they were from the ,moon4 ,the one who had been carried by the other came to me1 applying himself to my left side under the elbow1 and from thence he spoke1 saying1 that when they utter their voice they thunder in this manner2 and that by so doing they strike with terror the spirits who would do them harm1 and put some to flight1 so that they go safely wherever they please4 ,in order that ,i might know for certain that the sound they make was of this kind1 he retired from me to some others1 but not quite out of sight1 and thundered in like manner4 ,they showed to me1 moreover1 that their voice1 being sent forth from the abdomen after the manner of an eructation1 thus resounded like thunder4 ,it was perceived that this arose from the circumstance1 that the inhabitants of the ,moon do not1 like the inhabitants of other earths1 speak from the lungs1 but from the abdomen1 and thus from some collection of air therein2 the reason of which is1 that the ,moon is not surrounded with an atmosphere of the same kind as that of other earths4 ,i was informed that the spirits of the ,moon1 in the ,grand ,man1 have relation to the ensiform or xiphoid cartilage to which the ribs are attached in front1 and from which descends the linea alba1 which is the point of attachment of the abdominal muscle4 #aab4 ,it is known to spirits and angels1 that there are inhabitants even in the ,moon1 and likewise in the moons or satellites which are about the earth ,jupiter and the earth ,saturn4 ,even those who have not seen spirits who are from them1 and spoken with them1 entertain no doubt that there are human beings upon them1 for they1 too1 are earths1 and where there is an earth1 there is man2 for man is the end for the sake of which an earth exists1 and nothing has been made by the ,supreme ,creator without an end4 ,it may be evident to anyone who thinks from reason in any degree enlightened that the end of creation is the human race1 in order that there may exist a heaven from it4 ,,the ,,reasons ,,why ,,the ,,lord ,,willed ,,to ,,be ,,born ,,on ,,our ,,earth1 ,,and ,,not ,,on ,,any ,,other #aac4 ,there are several reasons1 about which ,i have received information from heaven1 why it pleased the ,lord to be born1 and to assume the ,human1 on our ,earth1 and not on any other4 ,,the ,,principal ,,reason was for the sake of the ,word1 that it might be written on our ,earth2 and when written might afterwards be published throughout the whole ,earth2 and that1 once published1 it might be preserved for all posterity2 and that thus it might be made manifest1 even to all in the other life1 that ,god did become ,man4 #aad4 ,that the principal reason was for the sake of the ,word1 is because the ,word is the ,divine ,truth itself1 which teaches man that there is a ,god1 that there is a heaven and a hell1 that there is a life after death2 and which teaches1 besides1 how man ought to live and believe in order that he may come into heaven1 and thus may be happy to eternity4 ,without revelation1 and thus1 on this ,earth1 without the ,word1 all these things would have been entirely unknown2 and yet man has been so created1 that as to his interiors he cannot dienn4 ,footnote nn3 ,by natural light 7lumen7 alone1 nothing can be known concerning the ,lord1 heaven and hell1 the life of man after death1 and the ,divine truths1 by means of which man has spiritual and eternal life1 nos4 #hidd1 #ajcah-ajcbj4 ,this may appear from the consideration that many1 and amongst them the learned1 do not believe these things1 although they are born where the ,word is1 and where there is instruction by means of the ,word concerning them1 no4 #ajcai4 ,therefore it was necessary that there should be a revelation from heaven1 because man was born for heaven1 no4 #agge4 #aae4 ,that the ,word might be written on our ,earth1 is because the art of writing has existed here from the most ancient time1 first on tablets1 next on parchment1 afterwards on paper1 and lastly publication by printing4 ,this was provided by the ,lord for the sake of the ,word4 #aaf4 ,that the ,word might afterwards be published throughout the whole of this ,earth1 is because here there is an intercourse of all nations1 not only by journeys on land1 but also by navigation to all parts of the entire globe2 hence the ,word1 after it had once been written1 could be conveyed from one nation to another1 and be taught everywhere4 #aag4 ,that the ,word1 after it had once been written1 might be preserved for all posterity1 consequently for thousands and thousands of years1 and that it has also been so preserved1 is known4 #aah4 ,that thus it might he made manifest that ,god has become man2 for this is the first and most essential purpose for which the ,word was given2 since no one can believe in a ,god1 and love a ,god1 whom he cannot comprehend under some form2 wherefore1 they who acknowledge an invisible and thus incomprehensible principle1 sink in thought into nature1 and consequently believe in no ,god4 ,wherefore1 it pleased the ,lord to be born on this ,earth1 and to make this manifest through the ,word1 so that it might not only be made known on this globe1 but might also by this means be made manifest to spirits and angels from other earths1 and likewise to the gentiles from our ownoo4 ,footnote oo3 ,the gentiles in the other life are instructed by angels1 and they who have lived well according to their religionism receive the truths of faith and acknowledge the ,lord1 nos4 #bjdi1 #beie1 #beih1 #bfjj-bfjc1 #bhfa1 #bhfc1 #cbfc4 #aai4 ,it should be known that the ,word on our ,earth1 which was given by the ,lord through heaven1 effects the union of heaven and the world1 for which end there is a correspondence of all things in the letter of the ,word with the ,divine things in heaven2 and that the ,word in its supreme and inmost sense treats of the ,lord1 of ,his kingdom in the heavens and on earth1 and of love and faith from ,him and towards ,him1 consequently of life from ,him and in ,him4 ,such things are exhibited to the angels in heaven when the ,word of our ,earth is read and preachedpp4 ,footnote pp3 ,the ,word is understood by the angels in the heavens in a different manner from what it is understood by men on ,earth1 and the internal or spiritual sense is for the angels1 but the external or natural sense for men1 nos4 #agfi-aggb1 #ahhg1 #badc1 #bccc1 #bcie1 #bedj1 #beda1 #bede1 #beea4 ,the ,word is what unites heaven and earth1 nos4 #bcaj1 #bdie1 #ibab1 #ibaf1 #iceg1 #ajcge4 ,the ,word1 therefore1 was written by strict correspondences1 nos4 #adjd1 #adjh1 #adji1 #aedj1 #afai1 #afei1 #agji1 #aghc1 #hfae1 #ajfhg4 ,in the inmost sense of the ,word the ,lord alone and ,his kingdom are treated of1 nos4 #ahgc1 #bbdi1 #bebc1 #gjad1 #iceg4 #abj4 ,in every other earth1 ,divine ,truth is manifested by word of mouth through spirits and angels1 as was stated in the foregoing pages1 in treating of the inhabitants of the earths in this solar system4 ,but this takes place within families2 for in most earths the human race dwell distinct according to families2 wherefore1 ,divine ,truth thus revealed through spirits and angels is not conveyed far beyond the families1 and unless a new revelation constantly succeeds1 it is either perverted1 or perishes4 ,it is otherwise on our ,earth1 where the ,divine ,truth1 which is the ,word1 remains in its integrity for ever4 #aba4 ,it should be known that the ,lord acknowledges and receives all1 from whatever earth they may be1 who acknowledge and worship ,god under the ,human ,form1 since ,god under the ,human ,form is the ,lord3 and as the ,lord appears to the inhabitants in the earths in an angelic form1 which is the ,human ,form1 therefore1 when the spirits and angels from these earths hear from the spirits and angels of our ,earth that ,god is actually ,man1 they receive that ,word1 acknowledge it1 and rejoice that it is so4 #abb4 ,to the reasons that have been adduced above1 may be added1 that the inhabitants and spirits of our ,earth1 in the ,grand ,man1 have relation to natural and external sense2 and natural and external sense is the ultimate in which the interiors of life close1 and on which they rest1 as on their common basis4 ,the case is the same with the ,divine ,truth in the letter1 which is called the ,word1 and which for this reason also was given on this ,earth1 and not on any otherqq4 ,and as the ,lord is the ,word1 and the ,first and ,last of it1 therefore1 in order that all things might exist according to order4 ,he also willed to be born on this ,earth1 and to become the ,word1 according to these words in ,john1 ,in the beginning was the ,word1 and the ,word was with ,god1 and ,god was the ,word4 ,the same was in the beginning with ,god4 ,all things were made through ,it1 and without ,it was not anything made that was made4444 ,and the ,word was made flesh1 and dwelt among us1 and we saw ,its glory the glory as of the ,only-begotten of the ,father4444 ,no one hath seen ,god at any time2 the ,only-begotten ,son1 ,who is in the bosom of the ,father1 ,himself hath manifested ,him 7i4 #a-c1 #ad1 #ah74 ,the ,word denotes the ,lord as to the ,divine ,truth1 consequently the ,divine ,truth from the ,lordrr4 ,but this is an arcanum which enters into the understanding of only a few4 ,footnote qq3 ,the ,word in the sense of the letter is natural1 no4 #hghc2 by reason that what is natural is the ultimate1 in which spiritual and celestial things close1 and on which they subsist as on their foundation1 and that otherwise the internal or spiritual sense of the ,word without an external or natural sense would be as a house without a foundation1 nos4 #idcj1 #idcc1 #ihbd1 #ajjdd1 #ajdcf4 ,footnote rr3 ,the ,word is the ,lord as to the ,divine ,truth1 consequently the ,divine ,truth from the ,lord1 nos4 #bhei1 #dfib1 #ejge1 #iihg4 ,through the ,divine ,truth all things were created and made1 nos4 #bhjc1 #bhid1 #ebgb1 #ghce4 ,,earths ,,in ,,the ,,starry ,,heaven4 #abc4 ,those who are in heaven are able to speak and converse not only with those angels and spirits who are from the earths in our solar system1 but also with those who are from other earths in the universe beyond this system2 and not only with the spirits and angels there1 but also with the inhabitants themselves1 only1 however1 with those whose interiors have been opened1 so that they are able to hear those who speak from heaven4 ,the same thing is possible for a man to whom it has been given by the ,lord to speak with spirits and angels1 during his life in the world2 for a man as to his interiors is a spirit1 the body which he carries about in the world being serviceable to him only for performing functions in this natural or terrestrial sphere1 which is the ultimate or last sphere4 ,but to no one is it given to speak as a spirit with angels and spirits1 unless he be of such a character that he can be consociated with angels as to faith and love4 ,neither can he be consociated with them1 unless his faith and love are directed to the ,lord2 for man is conjoined to the ,lord by means of faith in ,him and love to ,him1 that is1 by means of truths of doctrine and goods of life from ,him2 and when he has been conjoined with the ,lord1 he is secure from the assaults of evil spirits from hell4 ,with others the interiors cannot be opened to such an extent1 since they are not in the ,lord4 ,this is the reason why there are few at this day to whom it is given to speak and converse with angels2 a manifest proof of which is1 that at the present day it is scarcely believed that spirits and angels exist1 and still less that they are present with every man1 and that through them man has connection with heaven1 and1 through heaven1 with the ,lord2 and that it is still less believed that a man1 when he dies as to the body1 lives a spirit1 and in the human form as before4 #abd4 ,since1 with many in the church at the present day1 there is no faith in a life after death1 and scarcely any faith concerning heaven1 nor concerning the ,lord as being the ,god of heaven and earth1 therefore the interiors that are of my spirit have been opened by the ,lord1 so that1 while ,i am in the body1 ,i might at the same time be with angels in heaven1 and not only speak with them1 but see the stupendous things there1 and describe the same1 lest possibly it might hereafter be said1 ,who has come to us from heaven1 and told us of its existence1 and of the things that are there8 ,but ,i know that those who hitherto have at heart denied heaven and hell1 and the life after death1 will still persist in confirming themselves against them1 and in denying them2 for it is easier to make a raven white than to make those believe who have once at heart rejected faith2 the reason is1 that they always think about such matters from a negative1 and not from an affirmative1 standpoint4 ,nevertheless1 let those facts that have already been stated1 and that yet remain to be stated1 concerning angels and spirits1 be for those few who are in faith4 ,in order that others also may be led to some degree of acknowledgment1 it has been granted me to relate such things as delight and allure the man who is desirous of acquiring knowledge3 of this character are the things that shall now be related concerning the earths in the starry heaven4 #abe4 ,he who is not acquainted with the arcana of heaven1 cannot believe that a man can see earths that are so far distant1 and give any account of them from sensuous experience4 ,but let him know that the spaces and distances1 and therefore the progressions1 which exist in the natural world1 in their origin and first cause are changes of the state of the interiors1 and that with angels and spirits they appear according to these changesss2 and that through changes of state they may be apparently translated from one place to another1 and from one earth to another1 even to earths which are at the end of the universe3 so likewise may man as to his spirit1 his body still remaining in its own place4 ,this has been the case with me1 since1 by the ,lord's ,divine mercy1 it has been given to me to speak with spirits as a spirit1 and at the same time with men as a man4 ,that a man1 as to his spirit1 can be translated in this manner1 is inconceivable to the sensual man1 since he is in space and in time1 and measures his progressions according to them4 ,footnote ss3 ,motions1 progressions1 and changes of place1 in the other life1 are changes of the state of the interiors of life1 and nevertheless it really appears to spirits and angels as if they actually existed1 nos4 #abgc-abgg1 #acgg1 #ccef1 #efjf1 #ajgcd4 #abf4 ,that there are many systems1 may appear to every one from the fact that so many stars appear in the universe2 and it is known in the learned world that every star is like a sun in its own place1 for it remains fixed as the sun of our ,earth does in its place2 and that it is the distance that makes it appear in so small a form as a star2 consequently1 that1 like the sun of our system1 each star has planets around it1 which are earths2 and that the reason why these do not appear before our eyes is on account of their immense distance1 and because only the light from their own star reaches us1 which light cannot be again reflected from the planets so far as to reach us4 ,to what other purpose could so great a heaven with so many constellations be intended8 ,for the end of the creation of the universe is man1 that from man there may be an angelic heaven2 but what would a human race1 and from it an angelic heaven1 from one single earth1 be for an ,infinite ,creator1 for whom a thousand1 yea tens of thousands of earths1 would not suffice8 ,it has been calculated that1 supposing there were in the universe a million earths1 and on every earth three hundred million men1 and two hundred generations within six thousand years1 and that to every man or spirit there were to be allotted a space of three cubic ells1 the sum of that great number of men or spirits would not occupy a space equal to a thousandth part of this ,earth1 consequently hardly the space occupied by one of the satellites of the planet ,jupiter or ,saturn3 which would be a space in the universe so small as to be scarcely discernible2 for a satellite of ,jupiter or ,saturn is scarcely visible to the naked eye4 ,what would this be for the ,creator of the universe1 for whom the whole universe1 even if it were completely filled1 would not be enough1 for ,he is ,infinite4 ,in conversing with the angels on this subject1 they have told me that they have a similar idea of the fewness of the human race relatively to the infinity of the ,creator2 but that1 nevertheless1 they do not think from spaces1 but from states1 and that according to their idea1 earths numbering as many myriads as could ever be conceived in thought would still be as absolutely nothing to the ,lord4 ,the earths in the starry heaven1 however1 shall now be treated of in what follows from real experience2 from which it will likewise be made manifest how the translations to these earths were effected as to my spirit1 whilst my body remained in its own place4 ,,the ,,first ,,earth ,,in ,,the ,,starry ,,heaven1 ,,and ,,its ,,spirits ,,and ,,inhabitants3 ,,from ,,things ,,heard ,,and ,,seen4 #abg4 ,i was led by the ,lord by means of angels to a certain earth in the starry heaven1 where it was given me to gaze upon the earth itself1 yet not to speak with the inhabitants of it1 but with spirits who had come from it4 ,all the inhabitants or men of every earth1 on the termination of their life in the world1 become spirits1 and remain near their own earth4 ,from them1 however1 information is obtained concerning their earth and the state of its inhabitants2 for men1 when they quit the body1 carry with them all their former life and all their memorytt4 ,being led to earths in the universe does not mean being led and translated thither as to the body1 but as to the spirit2 and the spirit is led through variations of the state of the inner life1 which appear to it as progressions through spacesss4 ,approaches1 also1 are effected according to the agreements or likenesses of the states of life2 for agreement or likeness of life conjoins1 and disagreement and unlikeness disjoin4 ,from this it may appear how translation as to the spirit is effected1 and how it is made to approach distant regions1 while the man1 nevertheless1 remains in his own place4 ,but to lead a spirit outside of his own globe through variations of the state of his interiors1 and to cause the variations to proceed successively until a state is reached which agrees or coincides with the state of those to whom he is being led1 is in the power of the ,lord alone2 for there is needed a continual direction and foresight from first to last1 both on the journey thither1 and on the return journey1 especially when this is to be effected with a man who is still as to the body in the world of nature1 and thereby in space4 ,that this has actually been effected1 those who are in corporeal sensual things1 and who think from them1 cannot be induced to believe4 ,the reason is that the corporeal sensual faculties cannot conceive of progressions apart from spaces4 ,but1 nevertheless1 those who think from the ,sensual of their spirit1 that has in some degree been removed or withdrawn from the ,sensual of the body1 thus1 who think interiorly in themselves1 may be induced to believe and comprehend it1 since in the idea of interior thought there is neither space nor time1 but instead of them there are those things from which spaces and times proceed4 ,those things1 therefore1 that follow1 concerning the earths in the starry heaven1 are for the use of the latter1 and not for the former1 unless they are of such a character as to suffer themselves to be instructed4 ,footnote tt3 ,man after death has with him the memory of all his concerns in the world1 nos4 #bdgf-bdhf4 #abh4 ,in a state of wakefulness1 ,i was led as to the spirit by the ,lord through angels to a certain earth in the universe1 accompanied by some spirits from this globe4 ,the progression took place towards the right1 and lasted for two hours4 ,near the boundary of our solar system1 there appeared first a whitish but dense cloud1 and after it a fiery smoke ascending from a great gulf3 this was an immense chasm1 separating our solar system on that side from certain systems of the starry heaven4 ,the fiery smoke appeared over a considerable distance4 ,i was conveyed across the midst of it1 and then there appeared beneath in that gulf or chasm very many men1 who were spirits 7for all spirits appear in the human form1 and are actually men74 ,i also heard them talking with each other2 but whence they were1 or of what character1 it was not given me to know4 ,one of them1 however1 told me that they were guards to prevent spirits passing without permission from this into any other system in the universe4 ,that this was the case1 was also confirmed2 for when some spirits who were in the company1 and who had not received permission to pass1 came to that great interstice1 they began to cry out wildly that they were perishing1 for they were like persons struggling in the agony of death2 wherefore they stopped on this side of the chasm1 and could not be conveyed any further2 for the fiery smoke which exhaled from the chasm attacked them1 and tortured them in this manner4 #abi4 ,after ,i had been translated across that great chasm1 ,i at length reached a place where ,i stopped2 and then some spirits appeared to me above1 and it was given me to speak with them4 ,from their speech1 and from their peculiar manner of apperceiving things and explaining them1 ,i discerned clearly that they were from another earth2 for they differed altogether from the spirits of our solar system4 ,they also apperceived from my speech that ,i had come from a great distance4 #acj4 ,after we had conversed for awhile on various subjects1 ,i asked them what ,god they worshipped4 ,they said they worshipped some angel1 who appears to them as a ,divine man1 for he is resplendent with light2 and that he instructs them and enables them to apperceive what they ought to do4 ,they said further that they knew that the ,most ,high ,god is in the sun of the angelic heaven1 and that ,he appears to their angel and not to themselves2 and that ,he is too great for them to dare to adore ,him4 ,the angel whom they worshipped was an angelic society1 to which it has been given by the ,lord to preside over them1 and to teach them the way of what is just and right2 therefore they have light from a certain flame1 which appears like a little torch1 somewhat fiery and yellow4 ,the reason of this originates in their not adoring the ,lord2 therefore they do not receive light from the sun of the angelic heaven1 but from the angelic society2 for an angelic society1 when permitted by the ,lord1 can exhibit such a light to spirits who are in a lower region4 ,i also saw that angelic society1 which was high above them2 and ,i also saw the flame there whence they had light4 #aca4 ,in other respects they were modest1 rather simple1 but still they thought well enough4 ,the quality of their ,intellectual could be inferred from the light which prevailed among them2 for the intellect is according to the reception of the light which is in the heavens2 since it is the ,divine ,truth proceeding from the ,lord as a sun1 that shines there1 and enables the angels not only to see but also to understanduu4 ,footnote uu3 ,there is much light in the heavens1 nos4 #aaag1 #aeba1 #aebb1 #aecc1 #afai-afcb1 #debg1 #edjj1 #hfdd4 ,all light in the heavens is from the ,lord as the ,sun there1 nos4 #ajec1 #aeba1 #caie1 #ccda1 #cfcf1 #ddae1 #iedh1 #ifhd1 #ajhji4 ,the ,divine ,truth proceeding from the ,lord appears in the heavens as light1 nos4 #caie1 #cbbb1 #edjj1 #hfdd1 #icii1 #iedh1 #ifhd4 ,that light illuminates both the sight and the understanding of angels and spirits1 nos4 #bggf1 #cach4 ,the light of heaven also illuminates the understanding of man1 nos4 #aebd1 #cach1 #cafg1 #ddjh1 #ffjh1 #hgjg1 #iabh1 #icii1 #ajefi4 #acb4 ,i was informed that the inhabitants and spirits of that earth1 in the ,grand ,man1 have relation to something in the ,,spleen3 and in this ,i was confirmed by an influx into the spleen while they were speaking with me4 #acc4 ,when asked about the sun of their system1 which illuminates their earth1 they said that it appeared flaming4 ,when ,i represented the size of the sun of our ,earth1 they said that their sun was smaller2 for before our eyes their sun appears as a star2 and ,i was told by the angels that it was one of the lesser stars4 ,they also said that the starry heaven is also seen from their earth2 and that a star larger than the rest appears to them towards the west2 it was said from heaven that this is our sun4 #acd4 ,my sight was afterwards opened1 so that ,i could in some measure gaze upon that earth itself2 and there appeared many meadows and forests with trees covered with leaves2 likewise fleecy sheep4 ,afterwards ,i saw some of the inhabitants1 who belonged to the lower class1 clothed nearly like the country folk in ,europe4 ,i also saw a man 7vir7 with his wife 7mulier74 ,she appeared of handsome stature and of graceful mien2 so did the man2 but1 what surprised me1 he walked about pompously1 with as it were a haughty gait1 while the woman's gait1 on the contrary1 was humble4 ,the angels told me that such is the custom on that earth1 and that notwithstanding this peculiarity1 the men are loved1 because they are good4 ,i was further told that they are not allowed to have more than one wife1 because it is contrary to the laws4 ,the woman ,i saw had an ample garment before her breast1 behind which she could conceal herself1 and which was so made that she could put her arms in it1 and wrap herself in it1 and in this wise go away3 the lower portion of it could be gathered up1 and1 when gathered up and folded about the body1 it looked like a stomacher1 such as is worn by the women of our ,earth4 ,the same garment1 however1 also served the man for an article of clothing4 ,he was seen to take it from the woman and throw it over his own back1 and loosening the lower part1 which thus flowed down to his feet like a robe1 he walked about clad in this manner4 ,what ,i saw on that earth was not seen with the eyes of my body1 but with the eyes of my spirit1 and a spirit can see the objects that are on an earth1 when it is permitted by the ,lord4 #ace4 ,as ,i know that many will doubt the possibility of a man's being able1 with the eyes of his spirit1 to see anything on an earth so distant1 ,i may state how the matter is4 ,distances in the other life are not as distances on the ,earth4 ,in the other life distances are altogether according to the states of the interiors of each one4 ,they who are in a similar state are together in one society and in one place4 ,all presence there results from likeness of state1 and all distance results from unlikeness of state4 ,hence it was that ,i was near to that earth when ,i was brought by the ,lord into a state similar to that of its spirits and inhabitants1 and that being then present ,i conversed with them4 ,hence it is evident that earths in the spiritual world are not distant as in the natural world1 but only apparently so according to the states of life of their inhabitants and spirits4 ,the state of life is the state of the affections as to love and faith4 ,in regard to a spirit1 or1 what is the same1 a man as to his spirit1 being able to see the things that are on an earth1 ,i may also explain how the case therein is4 ,neither spirits nor angels are able1 by their own sight1 to see anything that is in the world2 for to them the light of the world1 that is1 solar light1 is as thick darkness3 just as man by his bodily sight cannot see anything that is in the other life2 for to him the light of heaven is as thick darkness4 ,but nevertheless spirits and angels1 when it pleases the ,lord1 can see the things in the natural world through the eyes of a man2 but this is not granted by the ,lord with any except those whom ,he permits to speak with spirits and angels1 and to be together with them4 ,it has been permitted them to see through my eyes the things in this world1 and as plainly as ,i myself did2 and even to hear men speaking with me4 ,it has sometimes happened that through me some have seen their friends1 with whom they had been intimate in the life of the body1 altogether present as before1 and they have been amazed thereat4 ,wives also have seen in this manner their husbands and children1 and have wanted me to tell them that they were present and saw them1 and to inform them of their state in the other life4 ,but it was forbidden me to say and reveal to them that they had been seen in this way1 for the further reason that they would have called me insane1 or have thought my information ravings of the mind 7animus71 for ,i was well aware that1 although they affirmed with their mouth1 they yet did not at heart believe in the existence of spirits1 the resurrection of the dead and their living among spirits1 and these being able to see and hear by means of a man4 ,when my interior sight was first opened1 and when those who are in the other life saw through my eyes the world and the things therein1 they were so amazed that they called it the miracle of miracles1 and were affected with new joy that there was thus granted a communication of the ,earth with heaven1 and of heaven with the ,earth4 ,this joy continued for months2 but afterwards it became familiar1 and now the wonder has ceased4 ,i have been informed that the spirits and angels with other men do not in the least see the things in the world1 but only perceive the thoughts and affections of those with whom they are4 ,from all this it may appear1 that man was so created that1 while living amongst men in the world1 he might at the same time live in heaven amongst angels1 and contrariwise1 so that heaven and the world might be together with man1 and act as a one1 and that men might know what passes in heaven1 and angels what passes in the world2 and that when men depart this life1 they might pass thus from the ,lord's kingdom on earth into ,his kingdom in the heavens1 not as into another1 but as into the same kingdom1 in which they had been during their life in the body4 ,but as man has become so corporeal1 he has closed heaven against himself4 #acf4 ,lastly1 ,i conversed with spirits who were from that earth concerning various things on our ,earth1 especially concerning the fact that sciences are cultivated here1 which are not cultivated elsewhere1 such as astronomy1 geometry1 mechanics1 physics1 chemistry1 medicine1 optics1 and natural philosophy2 and likewise arts1 which are unknown elsewhere1 as the arts of ship-building1 of smelting metals1 of writing on paper1 and likewise of publishing by printing1 and thus of communicating with others on the ,earth1 and thus also of preserving what is communicated for the use of posterity for thousands of years2 and that this has been done also with the ,word which is from the ,lord1 and that on this account revelation is for ever permanent on our ,earth4 #acg4 ,at last ,i was shown the hell of those who are from that earth4 ,those who appeared from there inspired great terror4 ,i dare not describe their monstrous faces4 ,sorceresses also appeared there1 who practise nefarious arts4 ,they appeared clad in green1 and struck me with horror4 ,,the ,,second ,,earth ,,in ,,the ,,starry ,,heaven1 ,,and ,,its ,,spirits ,,and ,,inhabitants4 #ach4 ,i was afterwards led by the ,lord to an earth in the universe which was at a much greater distance from our ,earth than the first one that has just been treated of4 ,that it was at a much greater distance1 was plain from this circumstance1 that ,i was two days in being led thither as to my spirit4 ,this earth was to the left1 whereas the former was to the right4 ,as remoteness in the spiritual world does not1 as already observed1 arise from distance of place1 but from difference of state1 the long-continuance of my progression thither1 which lasted two days1 enabled me to conclude that the state of the interiors which prevailed with them1 which is the state of the affections and of the consequent thoughts1 differed proportionately from the state of the interiors which prevails with the spirits from our ,earth4 ,as ,i was conveyed thither as to the spirit by means of changes of the state of the interiors1 ,i was enabled to observe the successive changes themselves before ,i arrived there4 ,this took place while ,i was awake4 #aci4 ,when ,i arrived there1 ,i did not see the earth1 but only the spirits who were from that earth2 for1 as has already been stated1 the spirits of every earth appear about their own earth1 because they are of a similar genius with the inhabitants1 for they are of them1 and are serviceable to them4 ,those spirits appeared at a considerable height over my head1 and from thence they saw me coming4 ,it must be borne in mind that they who stand on high in the other life can behold those who are below them1 and the higher they stand the wider is the extent of their vision2 and that not only can they behold them1 but also speak with them4 ,they observed from there that ,i was not from their earth1 but from some other at a distance2 wherefore1 addressing me from thence1 they questioned me on various subjects1 and to these questions it was also permitted me to reply4 ,among other things1 ,i told them from what earth ,i came1 and what kind of earth it was2 and afterwards ,i told them about the earths in our solar system2 and then also about the spirits of the earth or planet ,mercury1 that they wander about to many earths for the purpose of procuring for themselves knowledges about various things4 ,on hearing this1 they said that they had also seen those spirits among themselves4 #adj4 ,i was told by the angels from our ,earth that the inhabitants and spirits of that earth1 in the ,grand ,man1 have relation to ,,keenness ,,of ,,vision1 and that therefore they appear on high2 and that they have a most penetrating keenness of sight4 ,in consequence of their having this relation1 and of their seeing clearly the things that were below1 in the course of our conversation ,i compared them to eagles1 which fly aloft1 and enjoy a piercing and extensive view of surrounding things4 ,at this they became indignant1 supposing that ,i considered them like eagles as to their rapacity1 and consequently that ,i thought them evil2 but ,i replied1 that ,i did not liken them to eagles as to rapacity1 but as to keenness of vision4 #ada4 ,being questioned concerning the ,god whom they worshipped1 they replied that they worshipped a ,god visible and invisible2 a ,god visible under the ,human ,form1 and an invisible ,god1 under no form at all2 and ,i learned from their discourse1 and likewise from the ideas of their thoughts which were communicated to me1 that the visible ,god was our ,lord ,himself1 and they also called ,him ,lord4 ,to this it was given me to reply1 that on our ,earth also1 an invisible and a visible ,god is worshipped2 and that the invisible ,god is called the ,father1 and the visible1 the ,lord2 but that both are ,one1 as ,he ,himself taught1 saying1 that no one had ever seen the form of the ,father1 that the ,father and ,he are ,one1 that whoso seeth ,him seeth the ,father1 and that the ,father is in ,him and ,he in the ,father2 consequently1 that both ,divine ,essences are in ,one ,person4 ,that these are the words of the ,lord ,himself1 see ,john v4 #cg2 x4 #cj2 xiv4 #g1 #i-aa4 #adb4 ,afterwards ,i saw other spirits from the same earth1 who appeared in a place beneath the former3 with these also ,i conversed2 but they were idolaters1 for they worshipped an idol of stone1 like a man1 but an unhandsome one4 ,it is to be observed1 that all who come into the other life1 in the beginning have a worship which is like their worship in the world1 but that by degrees they are removed from it4 ,the reason why this takes place is1 that all worship remains implanted in man's interior life1 from which it cannot be removed and eradicated except by degrees4 ,on seeing this1 it was given me to tell them that they ought not to worship what is dead1 but what is living2 to which they replied1 that they knew that ,god lives1 and that a stone does not1 but that they thought of the living ,god while looking on a stone resembling a man1 and that otherwise the ideas of their thought could not be fixed upon and determined to the invisible ,god4 ,it was then given me to tell them that the ideas of thought can be fixed upon and determined to the invisible ,god1 when they are fixed upon and determined to the ,lord1 who is ,god visible in thought under the ,human ,form2 and thus that man can be conjoined with the invisible ,god in thought and affection1 consequently in faith and love1 when he is conjoined with the ,lord1 but not otherwise4 #adc4 ,the spirits who were seen on high were questioned whether on their earth they live under the rule of princes or kings4 ,to this they replied1 that they do not know what governments are1 and that they live under themselves1 distinguished into clans1 families1 and households4 ,they were questioned whether they were thus in security4 ,they said they were secure1 since one family never envies another1 nor desires to deprive another of anything4 ,they were indignant at being asked such questions1 as if they had been charged with being at enmity1 or with needing protection against robbers4 ,what1 said they1 does anyone need but food and raiment1 and thus to live content and quiet under one's own management8 #add4 ,being further questioned concerning their earth1 they said that they have meadows1 flower-gardens1 orchards full of fruit-trees1 and also lakes containing fish2 and that they have birds of a blue colour1 with golden feathers2 and large and small animals4 ,amongst the smaller1 they mentioned one sort which had the back raised like the camels on our ,earth2 nevertheless1 they do not feed on their flesh1 but only on the flesh of fishes1 and besides on the fruits of trees1 and on the leguminous plants of the earth4 ,they said1 moreover1 that they do not live in artificial houses1 but in groves1 amongst the leafy boughs of which they make roofs to shelter them from rain and the heat of the sun4 #ade4 ,being questioned respecting their sun1 which appears as a star from our ,earth1 they said that it has a fiery appearance1 and that it is not larger to the sight than a man's head4 ,i was told by the angels that the star which is their sun is one of the smaller stars1 not far distant from the equator4 #adf4 ,there were seen some spirits who were like what they had been during their abode as men on their earth4 ,they had faces not unlike the faces of the men of our ,earth1 except that their eyes and nose were small4 ,as this appeared to me something of a deformity1 they said that with them small eyes and a small nose are considered a beauty4 ,a female was seen1 clothed in a gown ornamented with roses of various colours4 ,i asked whence they procured for themselves materials for clothing on that earth4 ,they answered that they gather from certain plants substances which they spin into thread2 and that they then at once lay the threads in double and triple rows1 moistening them with a glutinous water to give them consistence4 ,afterwards they colour the cloth1 thus prepared1 with the juices of herbaceous plants4 ,it was also shown me how they prepare the thread4 ,the women sit down on a seat1 with their backs bent1 and twist the threads with their toes2 and when twisted they draw the threads towards them1 and work them with their hands4 #adg4 ,they said also1 that on that earth a husband has only one wife1 and no more2 and that they beget from ten to fifteen children4 ,they added1 that there are likewise found harlots on that earth2 but that these1 after the life of the body1 when they become spirits1 are sorceresses1 and are cast into hell4 ,,the ,,third ,,earth ,,in ,,the ,,starry ,,heaven1 ,,and ,,its ,,spirits ,,and ,,inhabitants4 #adh4 ,there appeared some spirits at a distance1 who were unwilling to approach4 ,the reason was1 that they could not be together with the spirits of our ,earth who were then about me4 ,from this ,i apperceived that they were from another earth2 and ,i was told afterwards that they were from a certain earth in the universe2 but where that earth is1 was not made known to me4 ,these spirits1 unlike the spirits from our ,earth1 were absolutely unwilling to think about their body1 or even about anything corporeal and material2 hence it was that they were unwilling to approach2 yet1 after the removal of some of the spirits of our ,earth1 they drew nearer1 and spoke with me4 ,but then there was a sense of anxiety arising from the collision of the spheres2 for spiritual spheres surround all spirits and societies of spiritscc2 and since they emanate from the life of the affections and the consequent thoughts1 therefore where the affections are contrary collision takes place1 and hence arises anxiety4 ,the spirits of our ,earth related1 that they dare not even approach them2 since1 on their approach1 they are not only seized with anxiety1 but also appear to themselves as if they were bound hand and foot with serpents1 from which they cannot be freed till they have departed4 ,this appearance takes its origin from correspondence2 for the spirits of our ,earth1 in the ,grand ,man1 have relation to external sense1 consequently to the corporeal ,sensual1 and this ,sensual is represented in the other life by serpentsxx4 ,footnote xx3 ,the external ,sensual of man in the spiritual world is represented by serpents1 because it is in the lowest parts1 and relatively to the more interior things in man1 lies on the ground1 and as it were creeps2 and on this ground they were called serpents who reasoned from that ,sensual1 nos4 #aie-aig1 #fcih1 #fidi4 #adi4 ,as the spirits of that earth are such1 they appear in the eyes of other spirits1 not in a distinct human form1 as others do1 but as clouds1 in most cases like a dusky cloud1 with the fair human colour interspersed2 but they said1 that within they are fair1 and that when they become angels1 this duskiness is changed into a beautiful blue2 which was also shown me4 ,i asked whether1 during their life as men in the world1 they had entertained such an idea respecting their bodies4 ,they replied that the men of their earth make no account of their bodies1 but only of the spirit in the body1 because they know that the spirit will live for ever1 but that the body must perish4 ,they said also1 that many on their earth believe that the spirit of the body has existed from eternity1 and that it was infused into the body when they were conceived2 but they added1 that now they know that it is not so1 and that they repent of having ever been in so false an opinion4 #aej4 ,when ,i asked them whether they would like to see any objects on our ,earth1 informing them that it was possible to do so through my eyes 7see above1 no4 #ace71 they answered first1 that they could not1 and afterwards1 that they would not1 because the things that they would see would be only earthly and material things1 from which they remove their thoughts as much as possible4 ,but nevertheless1 there were represented before them magnificent palaces1 resembling those on our ,earth possessed by kings and princes2 for such things can be represented before spirits1 and1 when they are represented1 they appear exactly as if they existed4 ,but the spirits from that earth esteemed them as nothing1 calling them marble images2 and then they related that they have more magnificent things belonging to them1 which are their sacred temples1 built not of stone but of wood4 ,when it was objected that these were still earthly objects1 they replied that they were not earthly1 but heavenly1 because when they gaze upon them they have not an earthly but a heavenly idea2 believing that after death they should also see like objects in heaven4 #aea4 ,they then represented their sacred temples before the spirits of our ,earth1 who declared that they had not seen anything more magnificent2 and as they were also seen by me1 ,i can therefore describe them4 ,they are constructed of trees not cut down1 but growing in the place where they first took root4 ,they said that on that earth there are trees of a wonderful size and height2 these they set in rows from the first1 so that they may form porticos and colonnades2 and by cutting and pruning1 they fit and prepare the tender shoots1 so that as they grow they may interlace and join together so as to form the groundwork and floor of the temple to be constructed1 and to rise at the sides to form the walls1 and above to bend into arches to form the roof4 ,in this manner they construct the temple with admirable art1 raised high above the ground4 ,they also prepare an ascent into it by successive branches of the trees1 extended from the trunk and firmly connected together4 ,moreover1 they adorn the temple without and within in various ways1 by disposing the foliage into forms3 thus they build entire groves4 ,but it was not permitted me to see the character of these temples within3 ,i was only told that the light of their sun is let in by apertures amongst the branches1 and is transmitted here and there through crystals1 by which means the light falling upon the walls is varied in colours like those of the rainbow1 especially blue and orange1 of which they are fondest4 ,such are their architectural works1 which they prefer to the most magnificent palaces of our ,earth4 #aeb4 ,they said further1 that the inhabitants do not dwell in high places1 but on the earth in lowly cottages1 for the reason that high places are for the ,lord who is in heaven1 and lowly places for men who are on earth4 ,their cottages were also shown me4 ,they were oblong1 having within along the walls a continuous couch1 on which they lie one behind another4 ,on the side opposite to the door is a rounded alcove1 before which is a table1 and behind the table a fire-place1 by which the whole chamber is lighted4 ,in this fire-place1 there is not a burning fire1 but a luminous wood1 which gives out as much light as the flame of a common fire does4 ,they said that in the evening these logs of wood appeared as if they had in them the fire of live coals4 #aec4 ,they said that they do not live as societies1 but as households by themselves2 and that they are societies when they meet for worship2 that on these occasions those who teach walk within the temple1 and the rest in the porches at the sides2 and that at their meetings they experience interior joys1 arising from the sight of the temple1 and from the worship celebrated therein4 #aed4 ,in respect to ,divine worship1 they said that they acknowledge a ,god under the ,human ,form1 consequently our ,lord2 for all who acknowledge the ,god of the universe under the ,human ,form are accepted and led by our ,lord3 the rest cannot be led1 because they think apart from a form4 ,they added1 that the inhabitants of their earth are instructed about the things of heaven by a certain immediate intercourse with angels and spirits1 into which they may be brought by the ,lord more easily than others1 because they reject corporeal things from their thought and affection4 ,i asked what becomes of those amongst them who are evil4 ,they told me that on their earth no wicked person is allowed to exist2 but if any one thinks and does evil1 he is reprimanded by a certain spirit1 who threatens him with death if he persists in doing so2 and if he persists1 he dies by a swoon2 and that by this means the men of that earth are preserved from the contagion of evils4 ,a certain spirit of this character was also sent to me3 he spoke with me as if with those evil ones3 he moreover inflicted something of pain in the region of my abdomen1 saying that this is what he does to those who think and do evil1 and that he threatens them with death if they persist4 ,i was also told that they who profane holy things are grievously punished2 and that before the punishing spirit comes1 there appears to them in vision the gaping mouth of a lion1 of a livid colour1 which seems as if it would swallow their head1 and tear it asunder from the body1 whence they are seized with horror4 ,they call the punishing spirit the devil4 #aee4 ,as they were desirous to know how the case is on our ,earth in regard to revelation1 ,i told them that it is effected by means of writing and preaching from the ,word1 and not by immediate intercourse with spirits and angels2 and that what is written can be published by printing1 and thus be read and comprehended by whole societies1 and that thus the life can be amended4 ,they were exceedingly surprised that such an art1 utterly unknown elsewhere1 could exist on our ,earth2 but they comprehended that on this ,earth1 where corporeal and terrestrial things are so much loved1 ,divine things could not otherwise inflow from heaven and be received2 and that it would be dangerous for such beings to converse with angels4 #aef4 ,the spirits of that earth appear above1 in the plane of the head1 towards the right4 ,all spirits are distinguished by their situation relatively to the human body2 and this is a consequence of the universal heaven corresponding with all things of manf4 ,these spirits keep themselves in that plane1 and at that distance1 because their correspondence is not with the externals1 but with the interiors1 belonging to man4 ,their action is upon the left knee1 above and a little below1 with a certain vibration very sensibly felt4 ,this is a sign that they correspond with the conjunction of natural things and heavenly things4 ,,the ,,fourth ,,earth ,,in ,,the ,,starry ,,heaven1 ,,and ,,its ,,spirits ,,and ,,inhabitants4 #aeg4 ,i was conducted to yet another earth which is in the universe beyond our solar system1 which was effected by changes of the state of my mind1 consequently as to the spirit2 for1 as has already been repeatedly observed1 a spirit is conducted from place to place no otherwise than by changes of the state of his interiors1 which changes appear to him in all respects as advancements from place to place1 or as journeyings4 ,these changes lasted continuously for about ten hours before ,i came from the state of my life to the state of their life1 thus before ,i arrived there as to my spirit4 ,i was conveyed towards the east1 to the left1 and seemed to be gradually elevated from a horizontal plane4 ,i was also permitted to observe clearly the progression and advance from my former place1 till at length those from whom ,i had departed no longer appeared2 and in the meantime ,i spoke on various subjects with the spirits who were with me4 ,a certain spirit was also with us who1 during his life in the world1 had been a prelate and a preacher1 as well as a very pathetic writer4 ,from my idea concerning him1 my spirit-companions supposed he was more a ,christian at heart than the rest2 for in the world an idea is conceived and a judgment formed from the preaching and writing1 and not from the life1 if this is not manifest2 and if anything inconsistent appears in the life1 it is nevertheless excused2 for the idea or thought and perception concerning any one draws everything to its side4 #aeh4 ,after this ,i observed that ,i was1 as to my spirit1 in the starry heaven1 far beyond our solar system2 for this can be observed from the changes of state and the consequent apparent continued progression1 which had lasted nearly ten hours4 ,at length ,i heard spirits conversing near some earth1 which also ,i afterwards saw4 ,when ,i had come near them1 after some conversation they said that strangers sometimes come to them from other places1 who converse with them concerning ,god1 and confuse the ideas of their thought4 ,they also pointed out the way by which they came1 from which it was perceived that they were of the spirits of our ,earth4 ,on being questioned then as to the confusion caused in their ideas1 they said it arose from those spirits saying that they ought to believe in a ,divine ,being distinguished into three persons1 whom they nevertheless call one ,god2 and on examining the idea of their thoughts1 it is exhibited as a trine1 not continuous hut discrete1 with some as three persons conversing with each other1 and with some as two seated together1 one near the other1 and a third listening to them and going from them2 and although they call each person ,god1 and have a different idea concerning each1 they still say there is but one ,god4 ,they complained exceedingly1 that they had thrown them into a confusion of ideas1 by thinking of three and speaking of one1 when nevertheless one ought to think as one speaks1 and speak as one thinks4 ,the spirit who in the world had been a prelate and a preacher1 and who was also with me1 was then examined as to the character of the idea he entertained respecting one ,god and three persons3 and it was found that he represented to himself three gods1 which1 however1 made one by continuity4 ,he1 however1 exhibited this ,three in ,one as invisible because it was ,divine2 and while he was exhibiting this1 it was perceived that he was then thinking only of the ,father1 and not of the ,lord1 and that his idea concerning the invisible ,god was no other but as of nature in its first principles1 from which idea it resulted that the inmost of nature was his ,divine1 so that he might easily be led from this to acknowledge nature as ,god4 ,it is to be borne in mind1 that the idea which any person entertains on any subject is1 in the other life1 exhibited to the life1 and through it every one is examined as to the character of his thought and perception on matters of faith2 and that the idea of the thought concerning ,god is the chief of all1 for through it1 if genuine1 conjunction is effected with the ,divine1 and consequently with heaven4 ,they were afterwards questioned concerning the nature of their idea respecting ,god4 ,they replied that they did not conceive of an invisible ,god1 but of a ,god visible under the ,human ,form2 and that they knew this not only from an interior perception1 but also from the fact1 that ,he has appeared to them as a ,man4 ,they added that if1 according to the idea of some strangers1 they were to conceive of ,god as invisible1 consequently without form and quality1 they would not be able to think about ,god at all1 inasmuch as such an invisible being does not fall into any idea of thought4 ,on hearing this1 it was given me to tell them that they do well to think of ,god under the ,human ,form1 and that many on our ,earth think in like manner1 especially when they think of the ,lord2 and that the ancients thought in no other way4 ,i then told them about ,abraham1 ,lot1 ,gideon1 ,manoah and his wife1 and what is related of them in our ,word1 namely1 that they saw ,god under the ,human ,form1 and acknowledged ,him1 thus seen1 to be the ,creator of the universe1 and called ,him ,jehovah1 and this also from an interior perception2 but that at the present day that interior perception is lost in the ,christian world1 and only remains with the simple who are in faith4 #aei4 ,previous to this conversation1 they had believed that our company also consisted of those who want to confuse them by the idea of three in relation to ,god2 wherefore1 on hearing what was said1 they were affected with joy1 and said that ,god1 whom they then called the ,lord1 had also sent some to teach them concerning ,him2 and that they are unwilling to admit strangers who disturb them1 especially with the idea of three persons in the ,divinity1 knowing as they do that ,god is ,one1 consequently that the ,divine is ,one1 and does not consist of three in unanimity1 unless they are disposed to think of ,god as of an angel1 in whom there is an ,inmost of life which is invisible1 and from which he thinks and is wise2 an ,external of life1 which is visible under a human form1 from which he sees and acts2 and a ,proceeding of life1 which is the sphere of love and of faith from him2 for from every spirit and angel there proceeds a sphere of life by which he is known at a distancecc2 and as to the ,lord1 that that ,proceeding of life from ,him is the ,divine itself which fills and constitutes the heavens1 because it proceeds from the very ,esse of the life of love and of faith4 ,they said that in this and in no other manner can they perceive a trinity and unity together4 ,on hearing this1 it was given me to say that such an idea of a trinity and unity together agrees with the angelic idea concerning the ,lord1 and that it is from the ,lord's own doctrine concerning ,himself4 ,for ,he teaches that the ,father and ,himself are ,one2 that the ,father is in ,him and ,he in the ,father2 that he who seeth ,him seeth the ,father2 and he who believeth in ,him believeth in the ,father and knoweth the ,father2 also that the ,comforter1 whom ,he calls the ,spirit of ,truth1 and likewise the ,holy ,spirit1 proceeds from ,him1 and does not speak from ,himself but from ,him1 by which ,comforter is meant the ,divine proceeding4 ,i was further permitted to tell them that their idea concerning a trinity and unity together agrees with the ,esse and ,existere of the ,lord's life when ,he was in the world4 ,the ,esse of ,his life was the ,divine ,itself1 for ,he was conceived of ,jehovah1 and the ,esse of every one's life is that of which he is conceived2 the ,existere of life from that ,esse is the ,human in a form4 ,the esse of the life of every man1 which he has from his father1 is called the soul1 and the existere of life thence derived is called the body4 ,soul and body constitute one man4 ,the likeness between them resembles the likeness between that which is in endeavour and that which is in the resulting act1 for an act is endeavour acting1 and thus the two are one4 ,endeavour in man is called the will1 and endeavour acting is called action2 the body is the instrumental1 by means of which the will1 which is the principal1 acts1 and in acting the instrumental and principal are a one4 ,such is the case with soul and body4 ,and such is the idea which the angels in heaven have concerning soul and body3 hence they know that the ,lord made ,his ,human ,divine from the ,divine in ,himself1 which to ,him was the ,soul from the ,father4 ,neither is the faith which is received throughout the ,christian world in opposition to this idea1 for it teaches1 that ,although ,christ is ,god and ,man1 yet ,he is not two1 but one ,christ2444 yea1 ,he is altogether ,one by unity of ,person2 for as body and soul are one man1 so also ,god and man are one ,christyy4 ,as there was such a union or such a oneness in the ,lord1 therefore ,he rose again1 not only as to the ,soul1 but also as to the ,body1 which ,he glorified in the world1 which is not the case with any man2 on which subject ,he also instructed ,his disciples1 saying1 ,feel ,me and see1 for a spirit hath not flesh and bones1 as ye see ,me have 7,luke xxiv4 #ci7zz4 ,this was clearly understood by those spirits1 for such truths fall into the understanding of angelic spirits4 ,they then added1 that the ,lord alone has power in the heavens1 and that the heavens are ,his2 to which it was given me to answer1 that this also is known to the ,church on our ,earth from the mouth of the ,lord ,himself before ,he ascended into heaven2 for ,he then said1 ,all power is given unto ,me in heaven and on earth 7,matt1 xxviii4 #ah74 ,footnote yy3 ,from the ,creed of ,athanasius4 ,footnote zz3 ,immediately after death1 man rises again as to his spirit2 and he is in the human form1 and he is a man as to all things in general and particular1 nos4 #debg1 #ejjf1 #ejgh1 #hici1 #hiia1 #ajeid1 #ajeig1 #ajgeh4 ,man rises again only as to the spirit1 and not as to the body1 nos4 #ajeic1 #ajeid4 ,the ,lord alone rose again as to the body also1 nos4 #agbi1 #bjhc1 #ejgh1 #ajhbe4 #afj4 ,i afterwards conversed with those spirits concerning their earth2 for all spirits can do this when their natural or external memory is opened by the ,lord2 for this they carry with them from the world1 but it is not opened except at the ,lord's good pleasure4 ,respecting their earth1 from which they had come1 the spirits then said that when leave is given them1 they appear to the inhabitants1 and converse with them1 as men2 and that this is effected by their being let into their natural or external memory1 and consequently into such a thought as they had been in when they lived in the world2 and that on such occasions the inhabitants have their interior sight or the sight of their spirit opened1 by which they see the spirits4 ,they added1 that the inhabitants know no otherwise than that they are men of their earth1 and only apperceive they are not when they are suddenly removed from their sight1 ,i told them that the same thing also happened on our ,earth in ancient times1 as1 for instance1 to ,abraham1 ,sarah1 ,lot1 the inhabitants of ,sodom1 ,manoah and his wife1 ,joshua1 ,mary1 ,elizabeth1 and the prophets generally2 and that the ,lord appeared in like manner1 and they who saw ,him knew no otherwise than that ,he was a man of the earth1 till ,he revealed ,himself4 ,but that at the present day this rarely happens2 the reason is1 lest men by such things should be compelled to believe2 for compelled faith1 such as is the faith which enters by means of miracles1 does not inhere1 and would also be hurtful to those with whom faith may be implanted by means of the ,word in a state without compulsion4 #afa4 ,the spirit1 who had been a prelate and a preacher in the world1 entirely disbelieved that any other earths existed besides our own1 because he had thought in the world that the ,lord was born on this ,earth alone1 and that without the ,lord none could be saved2 wherefore he was reduced into a state similar to that into which spirits are reduced when they appear on their own earth as men 7which state has been treated of just above72 and thus he was let into that earth1 so that he not only saw it1 but also conversed with the inhabitants there4 ,this done1 a communication was by this means granted me also1 so that ,i likewise saw the inhabitants1 and also some objects on that earth 7see above1 no4 #ace74 ,there appeared then four kinds of men1 but one after the other in succession2 the first ,i saw were clothed2 the second were naked1 of a human flesh colour2 the next were naked1 but with flame-coloured bodies2 and the last were black4 #afb4 ,while the spirit who had been a prelate and a preacher was with those who were clothed1 a woman with a very pretty face appeared4 ,she was simply attired2 her robe hung gracefully behind her1 and was also drawn over her arms1 and she wore a beautiful head-dress1 in the form of a chaplet of flowers4 ,that spirit was greatly delighted at the sight of this virgin2 he spoke to her1 and also took her by the hand2 but1 apperceiving that he was a spirit1 and not of that earth1 she hurried hastily away from him4 ,afterwards there appeared to him on the right several other women1 who had the care of sheep and lambs1 which they were then leading to a watering-trough1 into which water was led by means of a trench from some lake4 ,they were similarly clothed1 and had shepherds' crooks in their hands1 by which they led the sheep and lambs to drink2 they said the sheep went whichever way they pointed with their crooks3 the sheep which we saw were large1 with woolly tails1 broad and long4 ,the faces of the women1 when seen nearer1 were full and beautiful4 ,some men were also seen2 their faces were of a human flesh colour1 like that of the men of our ,earth1 but with this difference1 that the lower part of the face1 instead of being bearded1 was black1 and the nose more of a snowy-white than of a flesh colour4 ,afterwards the spirit who1 as already mentioned1 had been a preacher in the world1 was led further on1 but reluctantly1 because he was still thinking about that woman with whom he had been delighted1 as was evident from the circumstance that there still appeared something of his shadow in the former place4 ,he then came to those who were naked4 ,they were seen walking together by twos1 husband and wife1 girt with a girdle about the loins1 and some sort of covering around the head4 ,that spirit1 when he was with them1 was led into the state in which he had been in the world when he was disposed to preach1 and then he said he would preach before them the ,lord crucified2 but they said they would not hear such a thing1 because they did not know what it was1 but that they knew that the ,lord lives4 ,he then said he would preach the ,lord living2 but this too they refused1 saying that they apperceived in his speech something not heavenly1 because it had much respect to himself1 and his own fame and honour2 and that they could hear from the tone of voice whether what was said came from the heart or not2 and that1 as he was of such a character1 he was unable to teach them2 wherefore he was silent4 ,during his life in the world he had been extremely pathetic1 so that he could deeply move his hearers to holiness2 but this pathetic manner had been acquired by art1 thus from self and the world1 and not from heaven4 #afc4 ,they said1 moreover1 that they have a perception whether the ,conjugial is with those of their clan who are naked2 and it was shown that they perceive this by virtue of a spiritual idea concerning marriage1 which idea being communicated to me was to the effect1 that a likeness of the interiors was formed by the conjunction of good and truth1 consequently of love and faith1 and that from that conjunction descending by influx into the body conjugial love comes into existence4 ,for all things which belong to the mind 7animus7 are exhibited in some natural form in the body1 consequently in the form of conjugial love1 when the interiors of two mutually love each other1 and from that love also desire to will and to think the one as the other1 and thus to be together and be conjoined as to the interiors which are of the mind 7mens74 ,hence the spiritual affection1 which is of the minds1 becomes natural affection in the body1 and clothes itself with the sense of conjugial love4 ,the spiritual affection which is of the minds is the affection of good and truth1 and of their conjunction2 for all things of the mind1 or of the thought and will1 have relation to truth and good4 ,they also said that it is quite impossible for the ,conjugial to exist between one man and several wives1 since the marriage of good and truth1 which pertains to the minds1 can exist only between two4 #afd4 ,after this1 the spirit already spoken of came to those who were naked1 but whose bodies were flame-coloured2 and lastly1 to those who were black1 some of whom were naked and some clothed2 but the latter and the former dwelt in a different part of the same earth2 for a spirit may be led in an instant to places far asunder on an earth1 since he does not proceed and advance like man through spaces1 but through changes of state 7see above1 nos4 #abe1 #abg7ss4 #afe4 ,i lastly conversed with the spirits of that earth concerning the belief of the inhabitants of our ,earth on the subject of the resurrection1 in that they cannot conceive that men come into the other life immediately after death1 and then appear as men as to the face1 the body1 the arms1 the feet1 and all the external and internal senses2 still less that they are then clothed in garments1 and have mansions and dwelling-places2 and that the sole reason of this is that most persons here think from the sensuals which belong to the body1 and therefore believe in the existence of nothing but what they see and touch2 and that few of them can be withdrawn from external sensual things to interior things1 and thus be elevated into the light of heaven1 in which such things are perceived4 ,hence it is1 that they can have no idea of their soul or spirit as of a man1 but as of wind1 or air1 or a breath without form1 in which there is yet something vital4 ,this is the reason why they do not believe they shall rise again till the end of the world1 which they call the ,last ,judgment1 when the body1 though mouldered into dust1 and scattered by every wind1 will be brought together again and conjoined to its soul or spirit4 ,i added1 that it is permitted them to believe this1 since those who1 as was said1 think from external sensual things1 can conceive no otherwise than that the soul or spirit cannot live as a man in a human form1 unless it receive again that body which it carried about in the world2 wherefore1 unless it were asserted that the body will rise again1 they would reject from their heart as incomprehensible the doctrine of the resurrection and of eternal life4 ,but nevertheless this thought concerning the resurrection has this advantage with it1 that it leads them to believe in a life after death1 a consequence of which belief is1 that when they lie on a sick bed1 and do not1 as theretofore1 think from worldly and corporeal things1 thus not from sensual things1 they then believe that they shall live immediately after their decease2 they then also speak of heaven1 and of the hope of a life there immediately after death1 quite apart from their doctrinal concerning the ,last ,judgment4 ,i related further1 that sometimes it had been matter of surprise to me1 that when those who are in faith speak of a life after death1 and of their friends and relatives who are dying or dead1 and do not at the same time think about the ,last ,judgment1 they believe that they will live or are living as men immediately on their decease4 ,but as soon as thought concerning the ,last ,judgment flows in1 this idea is changed into the material idea concerning their earthly body1 that it is again to be conjoined to their soul2 for they do not know that every man is a spirit as to his interiors1 and that this it is which lives in the body and in each of its parts1 and not the body which lives of itself2 and that it is the spirit of every one from which his body has its human form1 and which1 consequently1 is principally the man1 and in a similar form1 but invisible to the eyes of the body1 yet visible to the eyes of spirits4 ,hence also1 when the sight of a man's spirit is opened1 which is effected by the removal of the bodily sight1 angels appear as men3 in this manner angels appeared to the ancients1 as recorded in the ,word4 ,i have also sometimes spoken with spirits1 with whom ,i had been acquainted when they lived as men in the world1 and ,i have asked them whether they had any inclination to be clothed again with their earthly bodies1 as they used to think would be the case4 ,but they fled far away at the very idea of such a conjunction1 being smitten with amazement that1 while in the world1 they should have thought in this manner under the influence of so blind a belief1 devoid of all understanding4 #aff4 ,moreover1 on that earth ,i saw the dwellings of the inhabitants3 they were lowly houses1 extended in length1 with windows at the sides1 according to the number of the rooms or chambers into which they were divided4 ,the roof was arched1 and there was a door on each side at the end4 ,they told me that they were built of earth1 and covered with turf2 and that the windows were formed of filaments of grass woven together in such a manner that the light shone through4 ,i also saw little children2 and the inhabitants told me that their neighbours come to them1 especially for the sake of the little children1 that they may be in company with other children in the presence and under the direction of their parents4 ,there also appeared fields becoming white with standing crops that were at that time nearly ripe for harvest4 ,the seeds or grains of that corn were shown me1 and they were like grains of ,chinese wheat3 ,i was also shown some bread made from it1 which was in small square loaves4 ,there also appeared plains of grass adorned with flowers2 also trees laden with fruit like pomegranates2 also shrubs1 which were not vines1 but still produced berries from which they prepare wine4 #afg4 ,the sun of that earth1 which is to us a star1 appears there flaming1 in size almost a fourth part of our sun4 ,their year is about two hundred days1 and each day fifteen hours1 relatively to the length of days on our ,earth4 ,the earth itself is one of the least in the starry heaven1 being scarcely five hundred ,german miles in circumference4 ,the angels stated these particulars from a comparison made with things of the like kind on our ,earth1 which they saw in me1 or in my memory4 ,their conclusions were formed by angelic ideas1 whereby are instantly known the measures of spaces and times1 in a just proportion relatively to spaces and times elsewhere4 ,angelic ideas1 which are spiritual1 in such calculations immensely surpass human ideas1 which are natural4 ,,the ,,fifth ,,earth ,,in ,,the ,,starry ,,heaven1 ,,and ,,its ,,spirits ,,and ,,inhabitants4 #afh4 ,i was led to yet another earth in the universe beyond our solar system1 and on this occasion also by changes of state continued for nearly twelve hours4 ,in company with me were several spirits and angels from our ,earth1 with whom ,i conversed during this voyage or progression4 ,i was carried at times obliquely upwards and obliquely downwards1 continually towards the right1 which in the other life is towards the south4 ,in two places only did ,i see spirits1 and in one ,i spoke with them4 ,during this journey or progression ,i was permitted to observe how immense was the ,lord's heaven1 which is designed for angels and spirits2 for from the parts uninhabited ,i was enabled to conclude that it was so immense that1 supposing there were many myriads of earths1 and on each earth as great a multitude of human beings as on our own1 there would still be a place of abode for them to eternity1 and it would never be filled4 ,this ,i was enabled to conclude from a comparison made with the inhabited extent of the heaven which is about our ,earth and designed for it1 which extent was so small relatively1 as not to equal one ten-thousand-thousandth part of the extent uninhabited4 #afi4 ,when the angelic spirits who were from that earth came into view1 they accosted us1 asking who we were1 and what we wanted4 ,we told them that we were travelling1 that we had been transported thither1 and that they had nothing to fear from us4 ,for they were afraid that we were of those who disturb them concerning ,god1 faith1 and kindred subjects1 on account of whom they had betaken themselves to that quarter of their earth1 shunning them as much as possible4 ,we asked them by what they were disturbed4 ,they replied1 by the idea of ,three1 and by the idea of the ,divine without the ,human in ,god1 when they yet know and perceive that ,god is one1 and that ,he is man4 ,it was then perceived that those who disturbed them1 and whom they shunned1 were from our ,earth3 this was manifest also from this consideration1 that there are spirits from our ,earth who thus wander about in the other life1 in consequence of their fondness for and delight in travelling1 which they have contracted in the world2 for on other earths there is no such custom of travelling as on ours4 ,it was afterwards discovered that they were monks1 who had travelled on our globe from a desire to convert the gentiles4 ,we therefore told them that they did well to shun them1 because their intention was1 not to teach1 but to secure gain and dominion2 and that they strive by various means first to captivate men's minds 7animi71 and afterwards to subject them to themselves as slaves3 moreover1 that they did well in not suffering their idea concerning ,god to be disturbed by such spirits4 ,they said further1 that these spirits also confuse them by asserting that they ought to have faith1 and to believe what they say2 but that their reply to them is1 that they do not know what faith or believing means1 since they perceive in themselves whether a thing be so or not4 ,they were of the ,lord's celestial kingdom1 where all know by interior perception the truths which with us are called the truths of faith1 for they are in enlightenment from the ,lord2 but it is otherwise with those who are in the spiritual kingdom4 ,that the angelic spirits of that earth were of the ,lord's celestial kingdom1 ,i could also see from the flame whence their ideas flowed2 for in the celestial kingdom the light is flaming1 and in the spiritual kingdom it is bright white4 ,they who are of the celestial kingdom1 when the discourse is about truths1 say no more than ,yea1 yea1 or ,nay1 nay1 and never reason about them whether they be so or not4 ,these are they of whom the ,lord says1 ,let your discourse be ,yea1 yea1 ,nay1 nay2 what is beyond this is of evil 7,matt4 v4 #cg74 ,hence it was that those spirits said that they did not know what it is to have faith or to believe4 ,they consider this to be like one saying to his companion1 who with his own eyes sees houses or trees1 that he ought to have faith or to believe that they are houses and trees1 when he sees clearly that they are so4 ,such are they who are of the ,lord's celestial kingdom1 and such were these angelic spiritsaaa4 ,we told them that few on our ,earth have interior perception1 because in their youth they learn truths1 and do not practise them4 ,for man has two faculties1 which are called the understanding and the will2 they who admit truths no further than into the memory1 and thence in some degree into the understanding1 but not into the life1 that is1 into the will1 these1 inasmuch as they cannot be in any enlightenment or interior sight from the ,lord1 say that those truths ought to be believed1 or that man ought to have faith in them2 and they also reason about them whether they be truths or not2 nay1 they are not willing that they should be perceived by any interior sight1 or by any enlightenment by the understanding4 ,they say this1 because truths with them are without light from heaven1 and to those who see without light from heaven1 falsities may appear as truths1 and truths as falsities4 ,hence so great blindness has fallen on many on our ,earth1 that although a man does not practise truths or live according to them1 they say nevertheless that he may be saved by faith alone1 as if a man were not man from the life and according to it1 but from the knowledge of such things as belong to faith1 apart from the life4 ,we afterwards conversed with them concerning the ,lord1 concerning love to ,him1 love towards the neighbour1 and regeneration2 saying1 that loving the ,lord consists in loving the precepts which are from ,him1 that is1 in living according to them from lovebbb2 that love towards the neighbour consists in willing good and thence doing good to a fellow-citizen1 to one's country1 to the church1 to the ,lord's kingdom1 not for the selfish end of being seen or acquiring merit1 but from the affection of goodccc4 ,concerning regeneration1 we observed that they who are being regenerated by the ,lord1 and who commit truths immediately to the life1 come into an interior perception concerning them2 but that those who receive truths first in the memory1 and afterwards will them and do them1 are those who are in faith2 for they act from faith1 which is then called conscience4 ,these things1 they said1 they perceived to be so1 and therefore perceived also what faith is4 ,i conversed with them by means of spiritual ideas1 by which such subjects may be exhibited and comprehended in light4 ,footnote aaa3 ,heaven is distinguished into two kingdoms1 one of which is called the celestial kingdom1 ,these also1 wishing to examine who and what ,i was2 immediately said that there was nothing in me but evil1 thinking that thus ,i might be deterred from approaching nearer4 ,i apperceived that this was their manner of accosting all who come to them4 ,but it was given me to reply that ,i well knew it to be so1 and that in them likewise there was nothing but evil1 by reason that every one is born into evil1 and therefore whatever comes from man1 spirit1 or angel1 as from what is his own1 or from his proprium1 is nothing but evil2 inasmuch as all the good that is in every one1 is from the ,lord4 ,hence they apperceived that ,i was in the truth1 and ,i was admitted to converse with them4 ,they then showed me their idea concerning evil in man1 and concerning good from the ,lord1 how they are separated from each other4 ,they placed one near the other1 almost contiguous1 but still distinct1 yet as if bound in an inexpressible manner1 so that the good led the evil1 and restrained it1 insomuch that it was not allowed to act at pleasure2 and that thus the good bent the evil in whatever direction it desired1 without the evil knowing anything of it4 ,in this manner they exhibited the dominion of good over evil1 and at the same time a state of freedom4 ,they then asked how the ,lord appeared amongst the angels from our ,earth4 ,i said that ,he appeared in the sun as a ,man1 encompassed therein with a fiery solar sphere1 from which the angels in the heavens derive all light2 and that the heat which proceeds thence is the ,divine ,good1 and that the light which proceeds thence is the ,divine ,truth1 both from the ,divine ,love1 which is the fiery sphere appearing around the ,lord in that sun2 but that that sun only appears to the angels in heaven1 and not to the spirits who are beneath1 since the latter are more remote from the reception of the good of love and of the truth of faith1 than the angels who are in the heavens 7see above1 no4 #dj74 ,it was given them thus to inquire concerning the ,lord1 and concerning ,his appearance before the angels from our ,earth1 because it pleased the ,lord then to become present among them1 and to reduce into order the things which had been disturbed there by the evil spirits of whom they complained4 ,the reason also why ,i was led thither1 was in order that ,i might be an eye-witness of these things4 #aga4 ,there was then seen a dark cloud towards the east descending from on high1 which in its descent appeared by degrees full of light and in the human form4 ,at length this human form appeared in a flaming radiance1 encompassed with small stars of the same colour4 ,thus the ,lord presented ,himself before the spirits with whom ,i was conversing4 ,at ,his presence all the spirits who were there were instantly gathered together from every side2 and when they were come1 they were separated1 the good from the evil1 the good to the right and the evil to the left1 and this in an instant as of their own accord4 ,those on the right were arranged in order according to the quality of the good1 and those on the left according to the quality of the evil1 with them3 they who were good remained to form among themselves a heavenly society2 but the evil were cast into the hells4 ,afterwards ,i saw that that flaming radiance descended to the lower parts of the earth there to a considerable depth1 and then it appeared at one time in a flaming lustre verging to luminosity1 at another time in a luminosity verging into obscurity1 and at another in obscurity3 and ,i was told by the angels that that appearance is according to the reception of truth from good1 and of falsity from evil1 with those who inhabit the lower parts of that earth1 and that the flaming radiance itself was subject to no such variations4 ,they also said1 that the lower parts of that earth were inhabited both by the good and by the evil2 but that they were thoroughly separated1 to the end that the evil might be ruled by the ,lord through the good4 ,they added1 that the good are by turns elevated thence into heaven by the ,lord1 and that others succeed in their place1 and so on perpetually4 ,in that descent1 the good were separated from the evil in like manner1 and all things were reduced to order2 for the evil1 by various arts and cunning contrivances1 had intruded themselves into the dwellings of the good there1 and had infested them2 and this was the cause of the present visitation4 ,that cloud1 which in descending appeared by degrees full of light and in the human form1 and afterwards as a flaming radiance1 was an angelic society1 in whose midst the ,lord was4 ,from this it was given me to know what is meant by the ,lord's words in the ,gospels1 where1 speaking of the ,last ,judgment1 ,he says1 ,that ,he would come with the angels in the clouds of heaven1 with glory and power 7,matt4 xxiv4 #cj2 ,mark xiii4 #bf2 ,luke xxi4 #bg74 #agb4 ,after this were seen some monkish spirits1 those1 namely1 who have already been spoken of as having been travelling monks or missionaries in the world2 and there was also seen a crowd of spirits who were from that earth1 most of them evil1 whom they had drawn over to their side1 and led astray4 ,these were seen on the eastern quarter of that earth1 from whence they had driven away the good1 who betook themselves to the northern side of the earth1 and of whom we have spoken above4 ,that crowd1 together with their seducers1 were collected together to the number of some thousands1 and were separated2 the evil of that crowd were cast into the hells4 ,it was also given me to speak with one spirit who was a monk1 and to ask him what he did there4 ,he replied that he taught them concerning the ,lord4 ,i asked1 what besides4 ,he said1 concerning heaven and hell4 ,i asked1 what further4 ,he said1 concerning faith in all that he should say4 ,i asked again1 if he taught anything else4 ,he said1 concerning the power of remitting sins1 and of opening and shutting heaven4 ,he was then examined as to what he knew concerning the ,lord1 the truths of faith1 the remission of sins1 man's salvation1 and heaven and hell2 and it was discovered that he knew scarcely anything1 that he was in obscurity and falsity concerning all and each of these subjects1 and that he was possessed solely by the lust of acquiring gain and dominion1 which he had contracted in the world and brought with him from thence4 ,he was therefore told that as he had1 prompted by that lust1 travelled thus far1 and as he was such in regard to doctrine1 he could not but deprive the spirits of that earth of heavenly light1 and inflict on them the darkness of hell1 and thus cause hell1 and not the ,lord1 to have dominion with them4 ,moreover1 he was cunning in seducing1 but stupid as to the things relating to heaven4 ,as he was of such a character1 he was afterwards cast into hell4 ,thus the spirits of that earth were freed of them4 #agc4 ,the spirits of that earth1 amongst other things1 also said that those strangers1 who1 as has been said1 were monkish spirits1 used all their endeavours to persuade them to live together in society1 and not separate and solitary4 ,for spirits and angels dwell and live together just as they had done in the world4 ,those who have dwelt together collectively in the world1 also dwell collectively together in the other life2 and those who have dwelt separated into households and families1 also dwell separated there4 ,these spirits1 whilst they had lived as men on their earth1 had dwelt separated1 every household and family1 and thus every clan1 apart1 and therefore knew not what it was to dwell together in society4 ,wherefore1 when it was told them that those strangers wanted to persuade them to this1 in order that they might reign and rule over them1 and that they could not otherwise subject them to themselves and make them slaves1 they replied that they were totally ignorant what was meant by reigning and ruling4 ,that they flee away at the bare idea of rule and domination1 was manifest to me from this circumstance1 that one of them1 who accompanied us on the return journey1 when ,i showed him the city in which ,i dwelt1 at the first sight of it fled away1 and was seen no more4 #agd4 ,i then conversed with the angels who were with me1 concerning dominion1 that there are two kinds of dominion1 one1 of love towards the neighbour1 and the other1 of the love of self2 and that the dominion of love towards the neighbour exists among those who dwell separated into households1 families1 and clans3 but the dominion of the love of self among those who dwell together in society4 ,among those who live separated into households1 families1 and clans1 he who is the father of the clan bears rule1 and under him the fathers of families1 and under these the fathers of each household4 ,he is called the father of the clan1 from whom the families are derived1 and the households of which the families are composed4 ,but all these exercise dominion from love1 like the love of a father towards his children1 who teaches them how they ought to live1 provides for their good1 and as far as possible gives to them of what is his own4 ,it never enters into his mind to subject them to himself1 as subjects or as servants1 but he loves that they should obey him as sons obey their father4 ,and since this love1 as is known1 increases in descending1 therefore the father of a clan acts from a more inward love than the father himself from whom the children are immediately descended4 ,such also is the dominion in the heavens1 because such is the ,lord's dominion2 for ,his dominion is from ,divine ,love towards the whole human race4 ,but the dominion of the love of self1 which is opposite to the dominion of love towards the neighbour1 began when man alienated himself from the ,lord2 for in proportion as a man does not love and worship the ,lord1 in that proportion he loves and worships himself1 and in that proportion also he loves the world4 ,then it was that1 from the necessity for self-preservation1 clans consisting of families and households gathered themselves into one body1 and established governments under various forms4 ,for in proportion as that love increased1 in the same proportion evils of every kind1 as1 enmity1 envy1 hatred1 revenge1 cruelty and deceit1 increased with it1 being directed against all who opposed that love2 for from the proprium1 in which those are who are in the love of self1 nothing but evil springs1 inasmuch as man's proprium is nothing but evil1 and1 as the proprium is evil1 it is not receptive of good from heaven3 therefore the love of self1 when it is the reigning love1 is the father of all such evilsddd2 and that love is also of such a nature1 that in proportion as it is left without restraint1 it rushes on until at length each one who is of such a character wants to have dominion over all others in the whole globe1 and wishes to possess all the goods of the others2 nay1 it is not even content with this1 but would have dominion over the whole heaven2 as may appear from the case of modern ,babylon4 ,such then is the dominion of the love of self1 from which the dominion of love towards the neighbour differs as much as heaven does from hell4 ,but notwithstanding that the dominion of the love of self is such in societies1 or in kingdoms and empires1 there nevertheless exists even in these a dominion of love towards the neighbour among those who are wise from faith in and love to ,god1 for these love the neighbour4 ,that in the heavens also these dwell distinguished into clans1 families1 and households1 although in societies together1 but according to spiritual affinities which have relation to the good of love and the truth of faith1 will1 by the ,lord's ,divine mercy1 be stated elsewhere4 ,footnote ddd3 ,man's proprium1 which he derives from his parents1 is nothing but dense evil1 nos4 #baj1 #bae1 #gca1 #hgd1 #hgf1 #ihg1 #ajdg1 #bcjg1 #bcjh1 #ceah1 #cgja1 #chab1 #hdhj1 #heej1 #ajbhc1 #ajbhd1 #ajbhf1 #ajgca4 ,man's proprium consists in loving himself more than ,god1 and the world more than heaven1 and in holding his neighbour of no account in respect to himself1 except it be for the sake of himself1 consequently in making much of himself2 thus it consists of the love of self and of the world1 nos4 #fid1 #gca1 #dcag1 #effj4 ,all evils of others1 enmity1 hatred1 revenge1 cruelty1 deceit1 nos4 #fffg1 #gcgb-gcgd1 #icdh1 #ajjch1 #ajgdb4 ,and from these evils all falsity flows1 nos4 #ajdg1 #ajbhc1 #ajbhd1 #ajbhf4 #age4 ,i afterwards questioned those spirits concerning various things in the earth from which they were2 and first1 concerning their ,divine worship1 and concerning revelation4 ,concerning the ,divine worship1 they said that clans1 with their families1 meet together every thirtieth day1 in one place1 and hear preaching2 and that on these occasions the preacher1 from a pulpit raised a little from the ground1 teaches them the ,divine truths which lead to the good of life4 ,concerning revelation1 they said that it is made early in the morning in a state midway between sleeping and wakefulness1 when they are in an interior light not as yet interfered with by the bodily senses and worldly things2 that on such occasions they hear the angels of heaven speaking concerning ,divine truths1 and a life according to them2 and that when they are quite awake1 an angel in a white garment appears to them by the bed1 and then suddenly disappears from their sight2 and that by this they know that what they have heard is from heaven4 ,thus a ,divine vision is distinguished from a vision which is not ,divine2 for in a vision which is not ,divine no angel appears4 ,they added1 that in such a manner revelations are made with their preachers1 and sometimes also with others4 #agf4 ,on questioning them concerning their houses1 they said that they are lowly1 built of wood1 with a flat roof1 having a cornice sloping downwards2 and that in front dwell the husband and wife1 in the next chamber the children1 and the maid-servants and men-servants at the back4 ,with regard to food1 they said that they drink milk with water2 and that they get the milk from cows1 which are woolly like sheep4 ,concerning their mode of life1 they said that they go naked1 and that to them nakedness is not a matter of shame2 also that their habitual association is with those who are within their own families4 #agg4 ,concerning the sun of that earth1 they related that it appears to the inhabitants of a flame-colour2 that the time of their year is two hundred days1 and that a day equals nine hours of our time1 which they could conclude from the length of the days of our ,earth perceived in me2 and further1 that they have a perpetual spring and summer1 and consequently that the fields are ever blooming1 and the trees are ever bearing fruit3 the reason why the case is thus is1 that their year is so short1 being equal to the time of only seventy-five days of our year2 and when the years are so short1 the cold does not continue long in winter nor the heat in summer1 and the ground in consequence is in a continual state of verdancy4 #agh4 ,concerning betrothals and marriages on that earth1 they related that a daughter1 when she approaches a marriageable age1 is kept at home1 nor is she allowed to go out till the day she is to be married2 and that she is then conducted to a certain connubial house1 where several other marriageable young women are also brought2 that they are there placed behind a screen1 which reaches as high as the middle of the body1 so that they appear naked as to the breast and face2 that on such occasions the young men come there to choose for themselves a wife2 and that when a young man sees a young woman suitable for him1 and to whom his mind 7animus7 draws him1 he takes her by the hand4 ,if she then follows him1 he leads her to a house that has been prepared1 and she becomes his wife4 ,for they see from the faces whether they agree in disposition 7animus71 since on that earth every one's face is an index of the disposition 7animus71 and disguises and counterfeits nothing4 ,in order that everything may be done with decency and without lasciviousness1 an old man is seated behind the young virgins1 and an elderly woman at their side1 to watch4 ,there are many such places to which the young women are conducted2 and there are also stated times for the young men to make their choice2 for if they do not find a girl to suit them at one place1 they go to another2 and if not at one time1 they return again at another4 ,they said further1 that a husband has only one wife1 and never more than one1 because this is contrary to ,divine order4 ,,index ,,of ,,subjects4 ,the
